What Are Your Hopes For Trump’s Presidency?

KL (Matthews, NC)
I have even less hope today than I had on Friday.

I marched yesterday and got home in time to watch the president's speech at the CIA and the Whitehouse press briefing.

To say I was dumbfounded is probably the nicest description I could choose. Scared and very fearful could easily be added.

No mention of the march. Which he had to see as he drove through it at least twice. Did the thought ever cross his mind that he might have a problem here? That there is a disconnect?

Petty arguments about crowd sizes and the more serious incorrect blaming of the media for his rift with the intelligence community shows a man who can't keep on message, and is quite frankly, delusional. Any responsible adult can find out for themselves what is true and what is false and easily come to the conclusion that the president is back to delivering fake news. It is almost like if he repeats it enough, it will be true. Does he think if he says it enough that we will believe?

His inauguration speech, seemed to be playing to his base. He's supposed to be a president for all Americans but he is still preaching to the people who voted for him.

I'm not sure I can stand four years of this constant need to boast. Or messages of doom and gloom, that only he will fix. Or have Kellyanne (aka baby) Conaway stand there and reinforce his rhetoric. She apparently has also drunk the kookaid.
Sidney Ford (Baltimore)
A peaceful transition of power to the grown-ups in the room.
Rachel Hoffman (Portland OR)
My hopes? That he is impeached before his psychopathic narcissism becomes the norm, that is to say, Impeachment NOW for his breaches of ethics and ownerships. Mr. Trump is a sick man, voted into office (but not really) by ignorant people. His numbers have already dropped and he should not be President.
K R (San Antonio TX)
I hope our nation, our democracy, and the people who will lose health care will all survive the Republican attempt to establish a fascist government. I hope no Supreme Court justices need to be replaced during the Reign of Duckface. I hope enough people will realize they have been lied to that Putin's puppet gets voted out in 4 years. I hope we can then rebuild our country into a civilzed, First World country. The odds aren't good but I am praying and working for a miracle.
ML (Anchorage, Alaska)
I didn't vote for him and hate his rhetoric. But, I'm curious about his deal cutting strategy with both the electorate and the Republican obstructionists in order to move his economic agenda forward. Is he throwing the Republicans a bone by appointing their Cabinet of Horrors? Maybe whipping up this nationalist fervor is one possible response to, yes, the carnage of neoliberal capitalism--experienced both at home and abroad. A different response would be socialism, and (sadly) we know we're never going there.
DJ Molny (Colorado)
Brevity.
L Kostash (Canada)
It is fascinating reading these comments - especially the common sentiments of so many - leads to my question - where are the voices of all of the idiots who voted this ignorant mouthpiece into the presidency? I guess they don't read?

I hope for Americans that the root cause of this 'nightmare' is ferreted out and that those who supported this egomaniac get the help they need.
Tim Whisler (Barneveld, WI)
This age will be seen as a feast for scoundrels orchestrated by a confederacy of dunces with the abundant commoner, cheerful as sheep, the main course. I'm going for a walk.
JP (CT)
That the inevitable term-ending scandal is brief and doesn't cause too much of a disruption in the lives of regular people.
KEF (Lake Oswego, OR)
Aside from any concerns about his presidency (and I have a lot) - I am just sick & tired of hearing him. Worse than fingernails on a chalkboard, and I simply can't bear to think of having to put up with him for 4 years.
Susan (USA)
His swift exit.
Arlene Burrrows (Buffalo, NY)
Character is destiny. Who he was and who he is, that is who he will be. Sad.
nom de guerre (Kirkwood, MO)
There is no hope. He has proven to be uneducable, irredeemable, petty, vengeful, driven by his id and ego.
Chris T (New York)
For all you people hoping for impeachment or resignation, or a swift end, by whatever means: do you realize this would mean that Pence would become president? Think about that carefully. Nothing would change. We don't have a mechanism for calling early elections in the United States. The only hope is to try and push Mr. Trump in the direction we want him to go.
Rachel Hoffman (Portland OR)
With respect, I disagree. Trump was elected, and will push on, on the cheesy charisma seen by those who voted for him. Pense, for all his ignorance, does not have the presence to do the damage Caligula has.
Bruce (Pippin)
I hope the Trump supporters, find salvation in the truth because Trump is just a symptom of the incredible gullibility, fear and hatred of your fellow man that led to his rise to power. Every body feels left out when they are centered in themselves, Trump voters need to find a way to connect with the rest of humanity.
RM (NYC)
My hopes for Trump's presidency: If Trump's plan is to abolish the National Endowment for the Arts, to eliminate affordable healthcare for 20 million Americans, to deny climate change as an existential threat to the planet, to govern as a divisive, misogynist, racially insensitive, neo-fascist presiding over a cabinet of crony capitalist billionaires, whose goal is the looting and soiling of the American landscape, then I hope he fails at all this and fails spectacularly; and that something humane, something that supports the neediest among us, something that elevates and inspires and unites us, will rise from the ashes of his failure.
Bruce Gunia (Bordeaux, France)
At some point I hope the people who voted for him recall the words of Foghorn Leghorn - "Well, I asked for it!"
TBS (New York, NY)
That he should permanently embarrass the political class in to seeing their job differently.

That he should inspire a new kind of politician: forceful, direct, efficient, unafraid, plain spoken, caring about this country.
JP (CT)
We had one. He and his wife got on Marine One yesterday only to fly over a chorus of boos and "one-finger salutes". No good deed goes unpunished.
M.A. Hughes (Prescott, AZ)
His first act as President, working on the repeal of health care for millions in the flu season, isn't a hopeful sign that he cares about the people left behind when their jobs and benefits left the country,!
Mark J (Cleveland ,Oh)
I hope congress has the courage to protect democratic principles. Defend a free press. Defend representatives and sentors who face threats after challenging Trump. Build infrastructure, not a Wall. I want to see Trumps tax return and links to foreign cash flow. Support NATO. Do not become isolationist.
Be honest with workers whose jobs are threatened by a changing economy. Enable them/us to reinvent themselves/ourselves.
Jonathan (New York)
That he and his views end up in the dustbin of history as quickly as possible, where they belong, while our institutions (the most important important being rule of law) demonstrate their resilience to ignorant demagoguery.

Unfortunately the problem with wishing for his success only means supporting and institutionalizing his views and behaviors.

Finally I hope that this result becomes the catalyst that helps rescind/modify the 18th century artifact that has contributed to electing two of the least successful presidents in the last 16 years, and against the will of the people -- the electoral college.
Steve S (<br/>)
Does Donald Trump's pledge to end the "American carnage" signify that he is willing to take on the National Rifle Association? I hope so.
maggieast (chicago)
I hope he will be impeached for not disclosing who he is, other than a foul mouthed lout.
Bill Blackmon (austin texas)
A fast, death-free impeachment, imprisonment, total silence.
Purple State (Ontario via Massachusetts)
That it ends quickly.
Flowergirl (Newport RI)
I hope he resigns.
Sara (Houston)
1) America should be first, there should be a heavy penalty for countries taking jobs overseas for cheap labor.

2) School choices and vouchers. Just watch the quality of secondary education jump when there are choices.

3) End to stagnation of wages, Americans cannot reconcile soaring home prices and college costs with the same damn wage we earned 15 years ago.

4) Control of advent of automation and robotics replacing human work.

5) Hard line on Islamic extremists and countries that harbor them.

6) End to torture as a means to get information.

7) Social freedom emphasis: Freedom of Marriage Act stays intact, heavy legal penalties for Bigotry in any form or setting.

8) Veterans taken care of.

9) Big business out of Washington.

10) Infrastructure repair.

11) Break up of large monopolies in media.

12) Medicare for all

13) Control of the internet, heightened security measures and legal penalties for fake news that amount to slander.
EW (rochester, NY)
billionaire businessmen deciding on getting big business out of Washington? get real.
Mars &amp; Minerva (New Jersey)
I can only fantastically hope that proof of Trump's treasonous ties to Putin and his circle of international criminals and murderers finally comes to light and we are forced to hold another election right away.
maggieast (chicago)
And I hope it happens before Russia invades Poland after Tillerson lifts the sanctions.
julie (Heidelberg, Germany)
My hopes for his presidency is that he be impeached, pronto. His conflicts of interest and and unknown financial allegiances make any act he takes suspect and tarnishes all of us.
Tony Machowski (Maine)
I believe my hopes, my standards and sense of propriety, my compassion and concern for all my fellow human beings are of no interest to the NOTMYpotus. Hoping for a shared goal is whistling in the dark.
ConA (Philly,PA)
Not a fan of Trump, but if he drains the swamp, especially regarding health care lobbyists, who win no matter what, then he could earn some points. ACA or no ACA, the insurance lobby and big pharma will win every time. We lose every time.
Robert (Philadelphia)
"First, do no harm"
sal (cherry hill, nj)
I hope that the checks and balances engrained in our Constitution will be sufficient to thwart the worst of Emperor Trump.
Laura (NJ)
I know it's too much too ask but I hope that the people who turned up to his rallies, ate up the fake news, and follow his Tweets start following legitamate news outlets and watch the confirmation hearings for themselves, without having them filtered, so they realize--sooner rather than later--that they've made a mistake and we can collectively work together to wake up from this nightmare.

I feel as though a portion of the population has voluntarily installed our equivalent of Kim Jong-un into office...and I fear it will be equally difficult to get him out.
Donato Colonna (Raleigh (NC))
I hope he learns that he is not the CEO of America, that he does not have 300 million employees reporting to him. I hope he will understand that the President must LISTEN and SERVE all people living in this country, with respect, open mind. He is there to serve, not to dictate, to drive the country with ideas, leadership and exemplar behavior, not with biased and divisive rhetoric. And I hope he understands that the world does not need more division and ideology that it already has.
Joan Tilley (Acton, MA)
Trump is a serial con man but unfortunately human beings are always reluctant to a admit they've been fooled, until it's too late. Trump's inauguration speech continued the con -- as if he will ever even try to do anything to help middle class Americans. Those who voted for him will support him to the point of no return. So, the best hope for us all is that the US Supreme Court upholds the rule or law and the United States Senate tempers his provocations. In both cases, those in power will be around long after Trump is gone. We also need a strong and vigorous press that does not back down from the truth when the twitters and intimidation come. My greatest fear is for the rest of the world because foreign policy -- military power -- is where a US President's powers are the most unfettered. God help us.
Vjbaggett (Kansas City, MO)
HOPE? Died in the rumble of Trump's carnage of America. I pray we not repeat the errors of World War II. I say NO, Trump, you are not the leader of democracy. I PLAN to live in a free, fair, thriving America. Thanks, but no thanks, I am not interested in authoritarian rule. I prefer not to.
Alan Orloff (Huntington, NY)
I hope that all the anger and polarization stops. I hope that, while we now have to face giving him a chance, he doesn't use a businessman's head to foolishly avoid looking at the whole picture. I hope that everyone channels their feelings into action, and that action MUST include letting all your elected officials know exactly how you feel. Not a laundry list. Take it one issue at a time. Interject your voice into the political system by using the system of checks and balances. Have hope that, even when things seem darkest, our system will work. Let your voice be heard through proper channels, not unsubstantiated Facebook shares. If "they" have won, then let's at least see what "they" do. Never before have the American people been given the task of monitoring and participating in government as much as this administration warrants.
Tom Swift (I-95 Corridor)
I hope that impeachment proceedings start immediately.
Kurt (Brooklyn)
Pence is worse
maggieast (chicago)
Not really. Pence can't win a national election.
Jose (Montreal)
I believe he won't dissapoint because we cannot expect much from him.
Marty (Boca Raton)
Neo-nationalism is replacing neo-liberalism and neo-conservatism...everywhere.
Sally E (MA)
My hope for the tRump presidency. Impeachment.
Geof (Southwest)
The 1% looking out for the 1% is not in the best interests for our republic. We sure don't need a carnival barker. We needed a pragmatic consensus builder. Repairing/updating our roads, bridges and electrical grid will provide many old school jobs, but job growth will mostly be in newer technology fields. The younger generations understand this. Affordable college and technical education
needs much improvement. I remain hopeful that even the most idealistic of either party understands this and will push for changes needed.
Amy (<br/>)
I hope the American people who disagree with him hold him and the Republicans to account whenever they seek to lie and mislead us. And I hope the press helps us do that by being vigorous but not biased. The commitments made to increase their presence covering Washington by the NYT and the Washington Post are important and appreciated by this grateful reader.
John (Smitka)
My hope for the first 100 days is that he resigns.
Roy Summerford (Alabama)
All I have left is hope, possibly empty hope, as I think about the world we will leave to our children and grandchildren. I hope America's ideals survive. I hope democracy survives. I hope American survives. I hope the world survives.
rogerthat (Purdue University)
Impeach. Imprison. ASAP.
Cayce (Atlanta)
I hope we get through the next four years without waging a war with China, without 23 million people losing their health insurance, without our LBGT citizens losing their right to marry, with our constitutional right to protest still in place and without rolling back environmental regulations to the point that our planet becomes inhabitable.
Chrstoph G. (Bielefeld, Germany)
Trump always wants to make a great deal and he uses every trick in his tool box to succeed. That is his life that is what he loves to do and that is how he won the election.
His attitude helped him to get a tough bussiness man but his pride and almost opssession with cutting a great deal hurt him a few times.
Now he will use his tactics in politics. But will he actually do bring jobs back to americans or will he just brag about saving jobs he hasen't saved?
I think the only option he has is taking on the big companys who are masters in creating inequalities. The question is if his ties to them are already to strong.
If he wants to make great deals for americans the big companies will not be on his side.
The ones who voted for him will remind him of his duties and he will eighter tell them lies or he will actually cut some great deals for them.
When he says america first I also think about the militarily involvement of the US in so many countries. If Trump reduces the foreign involvement other players will step forward like Russia and China. These countries have different values and they are eager to expand into a world dominated by the US. We will see a more diverse distribution of power which might be a good thing. America should be a row model for other nations to strive for and not try to force thair values on to them. (Writen by a German reader of the NYT)
RickQ (Freehold NJ)
My hope is that Trump's presidency lasts one term or less and Twitter is bought out by CNN.
Tyler W (Roanoke)
There are no hopes and not even an accurate guess of what will happen in the next several years. Trump is like the old crazy grandpa you have, that runs his mouth and expresses his views, and you think Oh haha that's funny or interesting, but you never fully let it affect you because it was just the ranting of an aging man. Now the electoral college has put a man like that in charge, the people who voted for him only did because they thought he was "cool" or "badass", whatever. I see it as a grave mistake. I am middle class. And I had hoped for America to continue on as it was and always has. I personally didn't need some huge change.
Kat (GA)
I have no hope, other than that we survive sufficiently intact to recover. I feel like I'm watching the library at Alexandria burn again.
Murphy4 (Chicago)
That we somehow as a Country find again our better selves.
BC (Melbourne, Australia)
I hope after he has destroyed the planet someone sends Arnie back from the future to stop him.
Mat (Dorset, United Kingdom)
Hoping that my country keep as far away as possible from him, but I don't want to admit that the lunatics have already taken over this particular asylum.

I wonder if one could emigrate to the South Pole...
Irene Vazquez (NYC)
I hope that he does not completely destroy this country.
Shantanu (Washington D.C.)
My hope? That he gets bored in a month or two and moves on to his next conquest. And takes Pence with him because he will be even worse. He might end up giving some legitimacy to this fraudulently elected regime.
Brian Traglio (Brooklyn)
It will be nasty and brutish. Hoping it's also short.
Woon (Berkeley)
Trump named his son Barron. He surrounds himself with gilt this and gold that. Aping royal European interiors. Oh, the glorious affectation in his marble halls! He is a man who would be king. Or emperor. A man seeking monarchy. He wants to be royalty. Surrounded by his royal children. My fervent hope is that we throw the bum and his glittery children out. A bonus would be locking him up. (ps A nod to Bill Maher with 'aping' above. And hopefully we can throw the bums out before Maher ends up in a Gulag.) somewhere. )
David Bates (Huntersville, NC)
It's like high school all over again: the smart kids and those that are even a little bit different are marginalized by the dumb jocks and the vapid cheerleaders.
EW (rochester, NY)
Wonderful comment. I remember exactly that in high school. On the up side, at my 50th class reunion, I felt some vindication.
Violet (DC)
And don't forget the spoiled rich kids who get bailed out of trouble every time.
Mike Pod (Wilmington DE)
I hope we can break the routine of minority popular vote Republicans breaking the successes of Democratic presidents that in turn have to be fixed again by another Democrat...but I don't expect it.
Duane McPherson (Groveland, NY)
Trump has now been inaugurated to the job of ruining the largest democracy in the world.

I am confident that he will ruin it successfully.
Virginia Koster (Ann Arbor, MI 48108)
I hope the Trump supporters come to understand they have fallen under the spell of a clever deceived, that they were fed fake news and that the Republican Congress is not in their corner. It's all about ego and power. There is no magic answer for employment beyond learning new skills in the changing marketplace. The Government can help with incentives but on a mass scale, large factories with heavy demand for manual labor just isn't going to happen. They have put their hopes and dreams on the wrong person.
Sam Kanter (NYC)
1. I hope Trump doesn't cause a nuclear conflict.

2. I hope millions don't suffer because of his actions and policies.

3. I hope our democracy survives the ravages of an incompetent, sociopathic president and his appalling crew.

4. I hope the republicans get their karmic rewards for being hypocritical cowards.
Melvin (SF)
I always hope the victor does well.
After all, if he doesn't, it'll hurt us, not him.
Hoping for a surprise: peace & prosperity.
common sense advocate (CT)
In many of these inauguration stories, reporters talk about Trump's rapid return to conservatism. Rapid as in take any mention of climate change off the white house website while the swearing-in bibles are still in transit.

Violent rhetoric about human beings, destructive plans for our planet, cavalier/flippant remarks about global military powers. None of this describes the meaning of the word conservative - cautious about change, restoring traditional institutions. Doesn't our planet get to be one of traditional things restored? An oil and gas salesman as Secretary of State who is already poking China, a bankruptcy lawyer on his way to Israel, I can't even put the word education next to DeVos because she wants to dismantle public schools and create online replacements and send the difference in cash to religious schools... None of this is conservative or traditional - it's opportunistic, immoral and dangerous. Media: pick another word and leave conservative alone - we must not normalize this mess.
Tim Connor (Portland OR)
I hope he inspires a mass progressive movement of resistance that revives the egalitarian spirit of the New Deal and destroys conservatism as a political force.
Nicole Leung (New York, NY)
I hope and suspect that Trump will fall on his own sword, and basically screw up in a really big way so that even his supporters will be taken aback. There needs to be a reason to take him out of office. There is no foreseeable chance that this presidency will be a good one.
M.C. (Maryland)
I hope that he can realize that running a country is completely different from running a ratings-driven TV show, which is the model that seems to govern his actions. I also hope he will quit doing his little immature thumbs-up gesture in photos.
John (New York)
my hopes:
1. that radical Islamic terror across the world actually falls, not rises like under Obama (despite his attempt to lower it thru downgrading relations with Israel)
2. that the anti-Semitism of BDS, which has risen during Obama's term, ends
3. that the government class (both gov and surrogates) ends its attempts to socially engineer the majorities of society in the name of protecting minorities
EW (rochester, NY)
I hope those negatives are eradicated just as his std's were eradicated. I think he proudly stated that they were his Vietnam. His perspectives, like yours, are so brulliant. By the way, are you equating anti-Semitism with anti-zionism, or do you not know the difference?
Mars &amp; Minerva (New Jersey)
EW, I think it's safe to say that Trump voters are never going to get a clue. They will keep hating President Obama as Trump takes away their health care and sends their children and grandchildren marching off to the meat grinder of the Middle East.
Past is Prologue.
Jamie L. (Boston)
God are you ignorant. Obama essentially finished off Al Queda and has nearly finished off ISIS. Can't wait for Trump to realize this and take credit for both.
Joanne (Chicago)
My hopes involve an extra large bucket from The Colonel, followed by cardiac arrest.
Leaf (San Francisco, CA)
My hope is that we survive it.
Jlseagull (Dayton)
There is no hope. He sucks every last iota of hope out of the air. I just hope that god gives people the strength to keep their head down grit their teeth and get through these next four years.
Jlseagull (Dayton)
He's a bull in a China shop. I hope he checks out on a whim ASAP
Dan King (IOW)
It is my greatest hope that he completely reverses his position on climate change. His government seems set to reverse all action on it, which makes him a very real threat to the future of our entire species. I am perpetually horrified by his plans t remove any actions on this topic, since over 97% of actively publishing climate scientists agree with and have provided extensive evidence to demonstate that this IS happening. If Trump does as he claims then he is nothing short of a traitor to his entire species.
Tom (San Francisco, CA)
I hope my fears are proven wrong.
F. (Delgado)
That he stops using Tweeter once and for all.
Humans (Earth)
I hope he doesn't get us all killed.
Teresa Keene (Anacortes, Washington)
That he'll get drummed out. He can't and won't change. His childish and constant Twitter whines prove that.
Dr Jim (Germany)
I fervently hope the death toll is limited.
Paul Rauth (Clarendon Hills)
I hope there is constant and consistent resistance to Trump in THE MEDIA and throughout America.

I also hope the Cubs win the World Series again and the Jets and NFL lose money.
Sarah Rose (Bellingham)
Trumps rise to being our 45th president is a fascinating chapter in our history. My husband brought our teenagers to hear him speak at a local rally, and he (husband) voted for him in the primaries believing that his campaign was self financed and he was therefore authentic. We ended up not voting for him for president after having such a difficult time with his anti women, Muslim, foreigner rhetoric. His arrogance and unapologetic nature causes me to shudder. HOWEVER, our democracy has elected him. We now need to take our collective energies and support our new president. We can not afford or take the time off of important issues to pursue impeachment. Get involved in your local communities, in politics, social action or whatever cause you feel passionate about. Spend your money, time and energy working toward positive change in your community and it will have far reaching results!in our country.
EarthCitizen (Albuquerque, NM)
I hope Trump stops tweeting and snarking and starts governing like a dignified grown-up. I hope this administration becomes so bogged down with bureaucracy and Democratic resistance in attempting to dismantle environmental protection, reproductive rights, the ACA, the Paris climate agreement, marriage equality, foreign affairs and the economy that the U.S. remains "stuck" with the Obama accomplishments long enough to either impeach this awful man or vote the administration out in 2020.
Reality Check (New York City)
May he finally understand the reality and the immense significance of climate change. May he be startled and humbled by the importance of the vast responsibility he has accepted, and realize he must truly take a step back and deeply consider before acting on impulse. May he conclude that there is so much about the world he doesn't know, and heed actual experts. And most of all, may he not do any permanent damage to our country through law or through war.
Lisa Mann (Portland OR)
I hope he will goad Republicans into supporting a massive public infrastructure project, especially in improving our crumbling water systems. That's one of the only promises he made that I actually hope he keeps.
Dick Springer (Scarborough, Maine)
I hope that Trump and the wrecking crew he has appointed to his cabinet are not able in four years to batter this country and its values so severely that they are no longer recognizable.
Margaret D. (New Haven, CT)
My hope is that it's short.
Judy (NYC)
I hope he does provide health insurance for all. And I mean ALL. Not just the poor. The middle classes and even the wealthy, the ones who pay for coverage for the poor, should not get nothing.

The way to force the Congress to devise something good is to require them to get their insurance through whatever plan they devise.

The ACA should not be repealed or gutted until the new plan is worked out. .
Nedan (Long Beach)
My best hope for this administration is that he rethinks all of the appointments he's made. And I hope he realizes the flaws in his dangerous campaign promises and drops them. Lastly I also hope Trump decides to put the country before his businesses that he refuses to divest himself from.
Gwendolyn Marks (Portland OR)
I hope he beats the record for shortest presidency, 30 days, and doesn't cause any irreparable harm.
David (North Carolina)
What would happen if our country puts US interests first? Would we be selfish or stronger? More like China or more like the Netherlands? More like Japan or more like France? I suspect they all consider themselves first, even if they don't proclaim it loudly. Haven't most Americans felt misused and unappreciated for our willingness to support and protect other nations -- while they prioritize what's best for them?
Kathy Sandefur (Washington State)
I hope he won't do or say something stupid and send us to war. I hope he won't let the Republican party destroy health care and the environment. He is so unprepared for the job.
Ron (South Carolina)
He rose to power promising jobs and instead, as his first act in office, took away the healthcare of those who need it the most. Sad. My hopes are that he resigns quickly or, if not that, just leaves us alone.
Albert (Maryland)
I am hoping the statistics about risks of heart attack and stroke in overweight men his age are accurate.
Chris (Los Angeles)
I hope that the people rise up as one when they see their rights being taken away.
Drew (Nj)
I did not vote for trump nor am I a fan of his (save for his cameo in Home Alone 2), however I do hope that the reality of running one of the world's largest countries hits him soon. It's easy to defend the man and it's really easy to crack jokes about him, but I want to see his actions. will he do right by all Americans or just the rich? Only time will tell I guess.
Hal E. Burton (Boston)
A swift and speedy impeachment and a repudiation of conservative policies that protect the wealth of the few at the expense of the rest of us.
Law momma (Pennsylvania)
My hope is that both parties start running more candidates with scruples, that term limits abound, and that a concerted effort that includes aggressive litigation beats back gerrymandering and voting laws that harken back to Jim Crow. (I am making contributions to those I entrust to do this.)

I hope that my children will not be drafted to fight in needless Twitter sparked wars and that they will always embrace the opportunity to broaden their horizons and embrace diversity. (I continue to expose them to "otherness" and give them context for other people's experiences to the best of my ability.)

I hope the 45th President of the United States would read a history book or at the very least spend some time with Sarah Palin watching the History Channel. (I would gladly supply the materials, be it reading materials or popcorn.)

Lastly, in 2018 I hope to not have to strain too hard to recognize the democracy that I have likely too often taken for granted.
nom de guerre (Kirkwood, MO)
Agree on all but for term limits; voting provides them. Politicians with scruples are few, how would citizens feel if Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren had term limits?
Michael (Philadelphia)
A swift ascent, followed by an even swifter descent.
David (Chile)
Yes, either Trump gets impeached or has a paralyzing stroke in his first 100 days. I'm good with either one.
citoyen (nyc)
Now that we are free of our Tinkerbell ex-president, we can have hope for change.
jiminy cricket (Right here.)
Chump change?
KL (Matthews, NC)
Hanged that goes in his bank account, no doubt
Mike Pod (Wilmington DE)
President Biff will give you plenty of chest-beating opportunity. Time for another Iraq, eh? Completely detached from reality or even his own deluded voters.
Vanessa Hall (Millersburg, MO)
I hope he destroys the prominence of the right wing religionist base and the Republican Party it represents.
Jacob (Idle)
I hope I don't die.
Rudiger Drees (Australia)
Eugene,I'm afraid that's wishful thinking.Republican president,republican congress,republican senate.There's no more political opposition.It's up to you now,the American people.
Matt James (NYC)
In light of all that's happened over the last year or so, it might be worthwhile for all of us to take a moment to consider whether allowing two private organizations like the Democratic and Republican Parties to dominate every aspect of our government should continue. This isn't about which party is "better." It's hard not to feel that George Washington's centuries-old warning was about PRECISELY what we are experiencing at this very moment. I mean, Trump is beyond even Orwell's imagination.

Please don't misunderstand me. The letter next to a politician's name does not, in and of itself, determine whether they are worthy of their position. What I am saying is that the parties have no real fear of anything anymore. For a long time, the leadership of both parties has dictated to us that we may only choose amongst the options they provide. Like an abusive partner, each party essentially tells the nation that we must each put aside whatever personal standards we have for ourselves because we have nowhere else to go. And like many a victim (myself included), we collectively accept the parties' implied assertions that we are powerless without them; a vote not cast in favor of a major party candidate is to be considered a wasted vote. In this manner, the parties (for all their professed opposition to each other) provide each other with infinite excuses for ever worsening behavior. Frankly, Obama's self-control was a bright spot in a decades long line of miscreants.
George Thomas (Phippsburg Maine)
Remembering what Rummy and Cheney did with a weak and illegitimate President- they started a war. So with a similar crowd, where does the war start?

My bet is Iran. That way we can be protected from the Iranian nuclear threat while undoing a signature Obama treaty. And we can re-empower the oil-igarchs in the Sunni Middle East, create a Russian oil boom and make Israel happy.

And of course the war can be dragged out until 2020.

This is the way the world ends - not with a bang but with evil malevolence. Time to restock the basement water and canned food.
Law momma (Pennsylvania)
Sadly, this seems chillingly prophetic.
Robert M. (Staten Island, NY)
This is the way the world ends -- not with a bang but with Twitter.
KL (Matthews, NC)
I have no hopes for a trump presidency.

I only hope he doesn't trigger a war somewhere in the world.
PHF (south)
My hope is that all of this will go away!

I was raised Republican and believed in the party but it is by far not my Republican Party anymore.

It is time for action by the rest of us.
David Bates (Huntersville, NC)
Well, maybe 'your' Republican Party should have thought about what it was doing when you allowed Rush, Hannity, Glen Beck, etc. to falsely inflame millions of folks that didn't have the capacity to know better. But no, 'your' Republican Party was perfectly happy to have the power that was gained from misleading the unsophisticated. You caused this, so you own it. You fix it.
Dady (Wyoming)
What is so interesting is that so much of the speech could be from a Bernie Sanders stump speech (worker focused). Had it been so, oh how the commentary would be different.
robdriscoll07 (CA)
That similarity hasn't been lost on me either. The differences lies in the proposed solutions; massive tax cuts for the wealthy and a rollback of worker protection laws help the common working man how again?
JJH (Atlanta, GA)
The differecne between what Sen. Sanders and what Mr. Trump talk about is the difference between compassion and greed.
Larry (Ann Arbor)
My biggest hope for Trump is that he will go away.
Jack and Louise (North Brunswick NJ, USA)
My hope is that every freedom-loving American gets involved in throwing all Republicans out of Congress in 2018, gerrymandering be damned. I hope that all of the GOP's works, signed by Trump, only prove to Americans that they see us as nothing but sheep to be fleeced and slaughtered. My biggest hope is that Trump doesn't start a nuclear war.
Leading Edge Boomer (Arid Southwest)
Short. Very short.
Jose (Herndon, VA)
My hope is that this man gets impeach. He already broke the law. He has NOT separated from his business. The constitution is very clear. No one should above the law.
Bhaskar (Dallas, TX)
I wish Trump succeeds beyond our hopes for his Presidency. Because it is an encouraging realignment of politics and power.
Because he represents resturning power back to the people.
Because he represents restoring leadership to businessmen, doctors, and engineers -- away from political hacks, greedy lobbyists, and cheap lawyers.
Lisa Mann (Portland OR)
No, that's not what he represents, that's what he SAYS he represents. Look at his actions... his cabinet members have more financial worth than 1/3 of the US population put together. Actions matter more than words.
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
Your faith in "businessmen" is disturbing. Have you been paying attention? The US has more wealth than ever. Your 'savior' "businessmen" have eviscerated the economy. Trump is famous for stiffing the average worker and small business owner. Even students who went into debt for Trump U so they could become businessmen like him. Please!
David (Chile)
Boy howdy, have another cup of sweet delusion.
Evan (Atherton, CA)
Christians who voted for Trump made the bargain that Ivan Karamazov talked about in Dostoevsky's great novel. He asked whether it would be right for a society to make the choice to have a completely peaceful, prosperous society at the price of torturing to death one innocent child.

His point was that he wouldn't want to live in a society populated by people who would make that choice.

That is what Christian Trump supporters have done. They voted to sacrifice immigrants, people of color, refugees, and the safety of women on the premise that their own lives would be better.

If that's what Christians are like then I'm tempted to believe Ivan's words:

"It's not that I don't believe in heaven. It's just that I kindly return the ticket."
Benedict (Princeton, NJ)
The sinking feeling that I've had throughout the day, especially after watching today's inaugural address, felt sadly familiar. Then it came to me that it was how I felt after watching the Twin Towers fall. That act of violence wounded a city that despite it's flaws, has always represented to me what can be great about our country. It hurt all those who loved New York and it's diverse and vibrant populace. Today the feelings arise again but now the hurt is for our country that despite it's flaws again represents what a democracy can and struggles to accomplish. Before the attack came from afar but now the attack comes from within and I hope that our republic can survive it with and not crumble into a cloud of dust.
Paula Motzel (Sewickley, PA)
Our country has punched itself in the face. We elected a Commander in Chief of the most powerful military in the world who can't even restrain himself on Twitter. Now he has the red phone. God help us all.
common sense advocate (CT)
The way David Brooks is talking about Trump and the GOP, the GOP will replace that red phone with one of those Fisher price phones soon enough.
Carl (Durango)
That he receives less space on the front page.
Law momma (Pennsylvania)
Amen...
Michelle Fechtor (New York, NY)
I hope that Trump's presidency maintains the fundamentals of our democracy. I will have a difficult time stomaching the policies I'm sure I will disagree with vehemently, but I'm willing to do so as long as we come out the other side with all of our checks and balances, rights, liberties, social institutions, and freedoms in tact. My fear for Trump's presidency is that he will slowly erode the systems and rights we take for granted and that he will bend the truth so far we no longer recognize the difference between fact versus opinion or thinking versus feeling. If his policies create a temporary setback in our progress forward as a society, I can try to accept it as a blip in history. If this is the beginning of a dizzying regression, I cannot.
Simply smart (New York, NY)
I miss President Obama and Michelle already.
Bun Mam (Oakland)
I hope those tax returns will be exposed.
Elle (Dedham MA)
The buy American hire American promise/threat: we need a close investigation of what Trumps businesses do in t his regard--and of course those of Ivanka and Kushner
Boston Review (Boston)
All Americans should hope for great success to this or any other President.
Dan (Here)
But how do you define "success" here?
Barbara (Connecticut)
First, I hope the Democrats gear up and prevent him from trampling on our Constitutional rights. It will be a long fight and we will need to become grass roots activists in our own communities and states. Give 'em hell, Harry! Second, if he tries to overstep his bounds, illegally mixes his business and his obligation to the American people, or is suspected to be an asset of the Russian government, I hope the Republicans will have the guts to impeach him and then try him in the Senate. But of course they will only do that if they find their own seats in jeopardy.
St. Paulite (St. Paul, MN)
Like his ghostwriter Tony Schwartz, the one who really wrote "The Art of the Deal," I am hoping that civilization will survive. (We have already seen the death of civility and of common decency with this man). We and our allies abroad are shaking in our boots, wondering what nonsensical idea will he tweet out next.
May (New Jersey)
Early impeachment.
Woon (Berkeley)
Pence out first. (Like Agnew.) Dems retake the house. Impeachment competed. Dem speaker of the House becomes president.
Bill (New York)
I hope he breaks the back of propaganda media when enough of his ardent supporters realize they've been lied to.
Jon (Berkeley)
My hope is that the New York Times will begin to cover protests fairly. The vast majority of protests today have been peaceful, yet the New York Times decided to focus on a small group of violent protesters. It grabs attention but ultimately discourages non-violent people from coming out to future non-violent protests.
maxmost (Colorado)
I hope the Democrats pull themselves together and produce such a HUGE turnout in 2018 that even Cross Check can't steal the election. We need to take the House and the Senate in 2018 to minimize the damage Trump and his corrupt cronies in the GOP will try to do to put democracy
Randy (Idaho)
My hope is not for what he will accomplish, but for what he won't given what he has said and done over the past year. Simply feeling hopeless and apoplectic at this point.
Cody (Atlanta)
The rest of us have to abide by the laws of the land. The new president does too. I don't cotton to his saying that the laws don't apply to him.. some role model. I hope all this rumor of Russian involvement, bribery of foreigners as a routine business practice, and tax shenanigans is all thoroughly investigated. Isn't it interesting how much time he spent accusing HRC of corruption and dishonesty? Not to mention 'Lock her up!'. Of course maybe these are both examples of his own fearful projections. Going to a shrink might have been easier but the ongoing FBI investigation will likely be his version of an 'examined life'.
sherry steiker (centennial, CO)
Patty Ag...Trump is inheriting a foreign policy mess? No no no no no..he will be creating one, and quickly.
sherry steiker (centennial, CO)
Paddy AG...Trump will be creating a,terrible foreign policy, hey, he loves Putin. Think about that.
Brian (Los Angeles)
I hope that my fears about this presidency are proven wrong. I do not think That Donald trip is qualified or able to do this job well.. I don't think he is a man of honor. Think he is looking out only for his own personal interests. So , I hope that I am wrong - because if I am wrong, That will be good for this country . Unlike so many of his supporters - I don't want the President to fail for my own selfish reasons. I want the country to thrive and succeed. Thats whats good for all of us. But, so far, there is not much to indicate my fears will not be realized. Please - do right by our country and its people - and prove me wrong, Mr. Trump.
Banjokatt (Chicago, IL)
And now the Trump nightmare begins. My expectations are very modest. I hope he does not do too much damage.
O Stone (USA)
I hope that he does something, or something is discovered about him, that justifies impeachment.
Debby (Washington DC)
I hope we are energized to engage in governing process. No institution is static. Trump presidency has awakened us to the importance of what being a citizen in a democracy requires. It is our job to be diligent and engage; now more than ever.
Barbara (D.C.)
What I hope is that both DT and Congress recognize that they did not win a majority, and their votes were buoyed by fake news and Russian interference. Essentially, that they recognize they should be governing from the middle. So far, I have no reason to believe there is enough dignity in any of our GOP leaders to recognize this truth, so my biggest hope is that they do not destroy the progress we have made, especially in relation to the environment. Global climate change is by far the thing we should most fear, and so far the signs are very very bad that this administration or Congress will act in humanity's best interest.

I mostly see this transition as the most pathetic day in my American life, a drastic fall from class to crass.
L. Traub (Pennsylvania)
My hope is that we do not become complacent. We need to be more active and more vocal than ever. We can't expect others to do the political work for us. Our single vote doesn't count for much unless we have organized and earned garnered another 100 votes for progressive, smart, ethical candidates.
College Prof (Fort Myers FL)
I don't have hopes for Trump. I think he has amply demonstrated that there is nothing in his program to inspire hope in any intelligent, thinking person. I do have hopes for the next 4 years. I hope that the legislators who are tasked with doing the most good for the most people don't cancel the health insurance that my son and many of my teaching colleagues finally got for the first time through Obamacare. I would hope our elected officials and our courts will continue to protect the rights of women and immigrants and minorities and the LGBT community. I would hope that they would stand up and reject corruption and bad government. I would hope they would not turn education over to private entrepreneurs, or allow the billionaires and millionaires and relatives and cronies who have now been granted positions of power to abuse their power or destroy the institutions and the safeguards that protect us, or lead the world into a bad place. I hope that if harm ensues, the harm done is limited and that the real carnage is kept to a minimum. Because there is carnage out there in the US and abroad, but it isn't empty factories and lost jobs or even foreign wars that is the worst of it - it is ignorance and hatred and stupidity at home, declaring itself the "will of the people" which it most certainly is not.
David Bates (Huntersville, NC)
I totally agree with you. But that said, we have to face up to the fact that we have government by the minority because they are meaner than we are, and they don't have any thought of giving up their power or doing what is right for its own sake.

So, what are we prepared to do to take our country back and again have democratic majority rule?
Dana Ellis (Birmingham)
I want him to realize that his divisive, distasteful campaign rhetoric has no place now that he is president (shouldn't have happened on the campaign). I believe that few of the people who voted for him were responding to that. Many people that I have spoken with voted for him while believing that he didn't really mean any of that.
The sooner he realizes that the role of the president is to unite the country the better. He may then actually succeed in the role. But to continue with the insane comments about how much trouble this country is in will only mean that his approval ratings continue to drop. We don't have time for this nonsense! Carnage, for crying out loud! Celebrate the country, work with others to fix the problems we have.
He now has 300 million bosses and we also know how to fire people.
pak (The other side of the Columbia)
That the Democrats take back the House and Senate in 2018. Well, a girl can dream.
Bob Nelson (USVI)
On the plus side, at least virtually all of America's Greatest Generation has passed on, spared from witnessing this abandonment of America's role in the world.
Max (Planet Earth)
My hope is that Trump orders Kellyanne Conway never to wear that hideous red white and blue outfit again as long as she lives.
Melvin (SF)
Oh come on! Don't be a killjoy!
Leisure suits are coming back any day now.
Classy.
Robert M. (Staten Island, NY)
I hope there will be a military coup to oust Trump. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I'd harbor such a hope.
Melvin (SF)
You're saying you hope for an end to our democracy.
Are you sure?
Gary Warner (Los Angeles, CA)
My hope is people will stop wasting time registering - at this point - 688 comments on this article alone. Write, act, speak where you will be heard.
Hunter (Greenwich, CT)
Now is the time to write your representative and senators, not just post to NYT. I expect the House to begin impeachment proceedings on Monday under Article I, Section IX, Paragraph 8. He is clearly in violation of the Constitution. Until then, his supporters will soon learn what a con man he is: coal and steel jobs are gone forever, and the US auto industry is not capable of competing without the ability to produce small vehicles off shore. By trying to revive 20th century economic policy in the 21st century, Trump is sure to fail. My hope is that he doesn't damage the United State's world-wide reputation, standing, and hard-won progressive policies before he's tossed out of office.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
The US's reputation is for illegally invading countries in the name of regime change, and then bleating when Russia reveals corruption in the Democratic party machine.
Jan (Montana)
I hope he is impeached in the first 100 days. He is mentally unfit and too unstable to lead our great country.
Mark Lebow (Milwaukee, WI)
I hope for the exact same things that Republicans hoped for on January 20, 2009: that the president fails in everything he does, that the midterm elections are a bitter, total rejection of him and his party, and that he is soundly defeated in four years. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
David (Chile)
Why wait four years, he's been impeachable since noon yesterday. C'mon Lyin Ryan and Mendacious Mitch, what are you waiting for?
Charles Thomas (Lansdowne, PA)
I look upon this day with dread and terror. He was elected to this office by a loud, xenophobic minority, to whom Trump fed lie upon lie. Facts no longer matter, self-dealing and double-dealing rule the day, and competence has been cast out upon the ash heap in favor of smiling faces spewing well-worn lies.

My hope for the Trump years is simply to survive with most of our American values intact. My expectation, however, is far bleaker. I genuinely believe that a land war will erupt in Europe by the end of the year, and at best we sit idly by while an authoritarian wave overtakes the continent and spills out across the globe. At worst, We side with the authoritarian regimes.

Freedom, as we have known it for 75 years, is over.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
Those 75 years included the time when the US illegally invaded Iraq, killed 500 000 civilians, made the middle east worse, wasted a trillion dollars, lost 5000 troops, and gave 10s of thousands more permanent physical and psychological injuries that will haunt the next generation. And GWB is still well liked.
Jennifer Sieve Hicks (Wyoming)
I hope he doesn't trample the Constituion,
CEC (Coos Bay Oregon)
I hope people realize that when Trump says he's giving the country back to "the people," he's not talking about you or me. He's talking about he and his billionaire buddies transforming our already undemocratic plutocracy into a Russian-style kleptocracy, again leaving us the crumbs as they laugh all the way to the bank. I hope it takes very little time for people to realize they've been terribly used by this horrible man.
AB (Illinois)
Our public lands are part of the amazing legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, one of this country's greatest presidents (and, like Trump, a Republican). I hope Trump and his fellow Republicans respect this legacy and what it means to all Americans, and do not sell off or otherwise threaten the great natural resources that every American has a right to enjoy. This includes acknowledging established climate science, as rising temperatures and changing weather patterns pose a real and immediate risk.

I hope Trump follows his fellow New Yorker in other ways as well. I'd rather have a square deal than an artful one.
Sid (Stamford)
I am on an H1B visa who came here in 2010. I have legally immigrated to this country, following all laws, paying 35%-40% of taxes and spent last 6+ years making best of my life.

Following along the rules, I have applied for a greencard, but it is a long wait (will take me 7 yrs more to get it). All the while I dont have greencard, I am basically in bonded labor to one organization I work at.

I have bought a house here, my daughter was born here, and hence is a US Citizen. I send my daughter to a daycare, I bought my cars here. The amount of money I spend here contributes to several jobs and betters the economy.

My outlook for Mr. Trump presidency is very bleak because he has encouraged rhetoric about making Legal immigration tougher. How much tougher ? I am deeply discouraged by his rhetoric and what he may do to destroy our lives.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
You are not illegal, so it is fanciful to think you are in danger.
Sid (Stamford)
Thanks ! Yes , it is fanciful, but it just speaks to the divide Trump has created which has led to irrational fear of racism and discrimination for the likes of us who are not citizens, are in minority and have now power over choosing who governs us.
Mikael Wester (Sweden)
Hopes - none
Fears - plenty
Kd (RI)
My hopes? None -- except that this nation can survive him. And I mean that literally.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
To be the worst, he first has to be worse than GEB. The US illegally invaded Iraq, killed 500 000 civilians, made the middle east worse, wasted a trillion dollars, lost 5000 troops, and gave 10s of thousands more permanent physical and psychological injuries that will haunt the next generation. And GWB is still well liked.
Will (Brooklyn)
All these people hoping for his removal from office. Please. He won. It's over. You're only hoping, not acting. And that's all you'll ever do. "Someone should stop him!" [Spends another year on NYTimes comments.]

The closest thing to action any of you do is sharing some angry article on Facebook. Maybe you even changed your profile picture to something protesty. So profound.

You are the problem. You are invested in false reality as much as his voters. You are not running for office. You are not changing anything. You are clicking, sharing and complaining to your friends and all the readers here who all feel the same way you do. Good job.

You're not going put the fork down and do something. You're sure not doing anything by reading this right now.

Accept your responsibility. Accept your defeat.
Montreal Moe (WestPark, Quebec)
Will,
I couldn't agree more. I am a democratic socialist and have long advocated that the USA retreat from the world and fix its own problems. I cannot understand why anyone would not embrace the Trump Doctrine especially those most concerned that the USA has slipped off the track. America needs to fix its own problems before it can take care of the world.
Hillel told us before the time of Christ, "If I am not for myself who can I be for?"
I hope the world can demonstrate that it can look after itself very well without the USA.
I am confident that the USA will be much better served if it looks after its own citizens first and foremost.
I do not regard President Trump very highly but today's speech was music to my ears.
America needs all its citizens focusing on making the USA a better place. The world will welcome the USA back into the fold when you are ready.
Grace Medeiros (Montreal, Qc)
I agree, Will.
In the land that prides itself of being the leader of the civilized world, those violent riots today showed the opposite.
And for a land that prides itself of its democracy, the comments here wishing the new President to fail, certainly showed the opposite.
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
Grace, no one is wishing that Donald Trump will fail. The fact is that he is incompetent, deeply flawed and unstable and therefore likely to fail which puts us all at risk. This is called reality and people commenting are being realistic. Over 30 years working in mental health, and in my opinion, I can truly say this is a broken man. The man who co-authored DT's book, The Art of the Deal, used to go home and say to his wife that Donald Trump was a human black hole. In other words he was so needy and empty that he sucked in even light! He has more recently said that he hopes that civilization will be able to survive this man as president. There is nothing okay or normal about the way DT talks about people, the way he lies and manipulates and systematically isolates his followers from others (news media, ANY other leaders, CIA/Intelligence). He is a danger to the values and norms upon which a democracy depends.
George (Neptune)
I would like to see him build our military & take a tough approach on China.. Specifically illegal building of Chinese bases on property owned by other nations in addition to taxing all foreign goods thus by making American goods cheaper in addition to building better relationships with foreign countries like Russia, Iran,China,Syria etc.
sstroud215 (Atlanta)
So at the beginning of your comment you want Trump to go hard on China over its foreign policy and tax their exports to us more. Then at the end you want him to warm up to China, Russia, Iran and Syria. A bit contradictory don't you think?
Christine Bunz (San Jose CA)
I sincerely hope to see him in an orange jumpsuit alongside his cronies sometime real soon. Whether for serious conflicts of interest, or just plain treasonous activity of the candidate himself and his campaign people, it'll be lovely to see them do the perp walk and for the country to return to normalcy. What we have now is certainly not normal.
TechMaven (Iowa)
My hopes for his presidency?
Just one:

That it's short.
Dady (Wyoming)
Really amazing that the readers on this thread won't embrace federalism or the return of a voice to the people. I never would have guessed that so many people find reliance on the federal government so appealing. Quite tragic actually.
Max (Planet Earth)
If you think that Trump coming into power marks a new federalism and a return of a voice to the people, dream on. I think there are a lot of folks out there who would like not to rely on the federal government so much. But this president is not about any of that. He's about himself and fellow billionaires. And Russia is celebrating like there's no tomorrow.
Bill Camarda (Ramsey, NJ)
Funny how federalism ceases the moment a state wants to prevent climate change. Funny how local control stops the moment a city wants to place reasonable restrictions on high-powered weaponry, or protect its gay or transgender citizens. One might call that quite tragic, too.
Eric (Long Island NY)
Impeachment.
Andrea Serna (Los Angeles)
I am hoping that he is impeached as soon as possible.
Boru O'Brien (New Jersey)
History will prove that Donald Trump committed fraud today when he took the oath "to preserve, protect, and defend" the Constitution. The sooner he is found out the better. The address today was the work of an incompetent leader who is in way over his head. If he really wants improve America maybe he could start by promoting legislation that requires that Presidential candidates publicly release their tax filings prior to the election or promise to take steps to update the Electoral College. He lied when he will be "returning power to the people". The truth is, that if he gets his way, he will be returning power exclusively to the rich people -- and no one else.
Andrew Nielsen (Australia)
Fraud?
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Trump is pre-Watergate Nixon. Melania is a taller Pat Nixon.

He should not unpack if Anonymous' threats of releasing info on him is anywhere near true.
sideman (Colorado)
My hopes and my expectations are not the same. I hope Trump will leave most of the ACA intact, only adjusting those elements most in need of correction. I expect he will severely cut back the funding structure, attempting to leave a few elements in place without financial support. I hope he will support efforts to reduce global climate change. I expect he knows very little about the science, leaving it to advisers who know better but will bend to the pressure of the disbelievers and conspiracy adherents. Individual states will carry the burden of rational efforts toward reduction. Ultimately I hope he will stay true to form, denying his past positions and acting in his own best interest to be admired by the public but I expect in this case he will merely play to his followers, performing no miraculous turnaround.
CEC (Coos Bay Oregon)
When Trump talks about giving the country back to "the people," he's not talking about me or anyone I know. We all know he's giving the country to billionaires, plutocrats, kleptocrats, and only about 25% of the electorate who actually turned out to vote for him.
KellyS (Berkeley)
I honestly hope he drops dead very soon. Today would be great.
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
Well, not good to wish anyone dead. That said, Pence may be even more of a threat. For example, Joe doesn't seem to be pushing hard against LGBT people, has said that the Marriage Equality Act is settled, and ending women's rights to safe abortions is not high on his agenda. On the other hand, Pence would aggressively work to overturn these Supreme Court rulings.
OTB323 (New Jersey)
That he truly works to i) improve the lives of all Americans (not just those who are wealthy and powerful) and ii) find common ground with those who, in an effort to promote and preserve American democracy, question his tactics and motives.

I hope he does all of this while acting with the dignity and decorum that is traditionally associated with the position he now holds.
BC (Melbourne, Australia)
I hope he doesn't ignore the world's scientists on global warming and destroy the planet in the name of money and greed. Or is that too much too ask of an elected president of US these days?
Chet Walters (Stratford, CT)
My hope is that Mr. Trump is impeached and convicted and removed from office as soon as possible. The Republicans spent 8 years trying to delegitimize President Obama and showing that the impulse to do so was racist. It showed that the number one issue is to resolve racial differences and pay appropriate reparations to descendants of African Americans " held to service" prior to 1865. Trump is nothing more than a con artist; everything about Trump's election demands impeachment. Trump and the Republicans cannot unite the country and they owe President Obama one huge apology.
Rob M (NYC)
My hope is that he realizes that he cannot force a Pence/Bannon alt-right (aka fascist) agenda and meets the opposition halfway.
Barry (Peoria,AZ)
Survival.
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
1. That the President Trump's newly appointed right leaning cabinet and other non elected government officials, aides, diplomats, and the like, collectively agree that our global ice has melted at a dangerous rate and must be intervened by mechanical technology.

My solution is and is that of many MIT and University of Michigan Engineers is to build a rotating cap, like a bennie, made of wedges that are separate, but are suspended in the atmosphere and collect the sun's radiation, store it if possible, but most importantly, reflect it into space. The contraption should act like a parabolic mirror but without a focal point of the sun's radiation.

Here in Sacramento, all the land is flooded. We are about 7 feet from having the capital flooded though there is a levy along the Sacramento River to prevent immediate flooding if there is an increase in the river's level.

Global Warming = Severe Weather = catastrophies = Federal Tax Dollars to renovate or rebuild or reconstruct the damage that the severe weather causes.

One thing is certain, crops and agriculture cannot be repaired, people dying from exposure ( one homeless man did yesterday, while lying against a government building during yesterday's storm), cannot be resurrected, and insurance which keeps us all calm can never be sufficient to handle the massive amounts of property damage of severe weather.

In short, I hope that our new Populist President will act to prevent global warming for economic reasons.
Kat Marie (Prescott , AZ)
He doesn't believe anything is wrong with the environment. He wants all the climate change and environmentalist to go away. He's going to destroy the planet.
Laura Kuhn (Lafayette Hill, PA)
I hope he cooperates with world leaders to improve the environment.
KL (Matthews, NC)
He will only believe in climate change when the ocean is lapping at the gates of Mar a Largo. And somehow the democrats will get blamed it.
David (Chile)
How about salt water lapping the golf course.
Joe (White Plains)
I am heartened only by the patriotic resistance taking shape in the streets of our nation’s capital.
KitKat (Ossining, NY)
My hope is that he is a one term president and that everyone who is protesting peacefully today stays engaged so we can rebalance power in the 2018 midterm elections. My hope is that we will shift from reporting Twitter tirades as news and instead use those resources to understand how a foreign adversary destroyed the integrity of our democratic process and make sure it never happens again.
Laura (New York, NY)
My hope is that it ends swiftly, that under his reign there will less harm done to vulnerable groups than what his words have led us to believe, and that any reversal of social progress can be undone by the next president.
Will Haines (Brockport NY)
Hoping he gets removed from office. As soon as possible.
Mike (CA)
I hope all the havoc that will come will not take too long to recover from. This will all hopefully be just a bad sad nightmare.
Martin green (San Diego)
I hope the truth is exposed of his ties to Russia and that he is impeached within the first 100 days. As disgusting as I find Pence with his anti-gay stance, at least he is a leader. Trump is a disgrace and his election has exposed flaws in American democracy - or so-called democracy. I hope the electoral college is restricted to use as a tie-breaker.

I am a Canadian and after Donald J. Trump's speech I am ready to party like a liberal in 1776. Thank you America and thank you Donald J. Trump. You have given the world hope and for our children and grandchildren in the USA if things don't work out there is a world this side of the border that will welcome you talents.

This is a very sad and horrible day.

Mr.Trump would best utilize Reasearch, Info Technology and skilled intellectuals from all over the world in removing the weeds of terrorism from root and take necessary actions in a long term to outdo them in the limited time before the swamp can drown all of us or the time lapses.
tony zito (Poughkeepsie, NY)
A few commentators are saying that they won't wish for him to fail, because if he does it means the US fails. On the contrary, the fewer of Trump's plans that succeed, the better off the United States will be. So feel free to hope that he falls flat on his face.
Jamin (North Bethesda, MD)
Exactly. I'm a moderate and voted for Hilary. I don't understand how people can be so polarizing and wish for him to fail.
Emma Arends (Seattle, Washington)
I want President Trump to develop the ability to be alert and sympathetic to the issues of our country and the world, to consult the appropriate people most aptly equipped to address those issues, and to work with them to find the best possible solutions.

I would like to see com semblance of maturity.

Based off his cabinet, his unwillingness to disconnect himself from his business, his close ties with the NRA, Putin, and business executives all around the world, I don’t believe he has the wisdom, insight, humility, or patience to lead this country to be safe, inclusive, and prosperous.
He does not have the intellectual or emotional architecture necessary to lead a country. He doesn’t understand that his words have an impact on the world. He doesn’t understand the subtleties and complexities of diplomacy. He refuses to listen to experts whether its ethical consultants, intelligence officials, climate change scientists, or anyone else who knows more than him about anything.

I hope he can learn to work with others who are humane compassionate, intelligent, informed, and optimistic. I doubt he can do it. Let’s hope he can.
CapeCodder (MA)
I hopr he'll be able to work the magic required to [1] get US companies to bring mfg. jobs back at decent salaries, [2] persuade India , China, Mexico etc, not to undercut our products now that U.S. companies have given them the technical know how to compete against us and [3] persuade Americans to pay the higher prices for U.S. Mfg. goods, imported goods with new tarriffs. I admire his willingness to try to put the globalization genie back in the bottle but hope he also continues Obama's job retraining programs just to hedge his bets.
Harry (<br/>)
Dispite his repeated promises, Trump won't be able to bring manufacturing jobs that employs high school dropouts with decent wages back to the US.

Why? I'll let you in on a not-so-secret fact: Those jobs will mostly go to robots and machines with artificial intelligence, and a few highly trained / college grad technicians who will maintain and service them.

Here's another not-So-secret fact: China is losing manufacturing jobs too. They're losing them to robots.

The problem is with his disorder, he thinks there is nothing wrong with him.
Jorrocks (Prague)
The most sinister inaugural address that I can remember hearing. Like many other expatriates, I also thought it profoundly un-American.
Caroline (Utah)
At best, I hope Trump listens to intelligent, compassionate, and informed voices from both sides of the aisle, then acts according to their advice. At the very least, I hope that he won't instigate violence-- locally or globally.
Lynn Bianchi (Manhattan, New York)
I hope that the Republicans currently enjoying their majority in government manage to find their courage, ethics and love of the Constitution whenever Trump steps over the line and attempts to take our country in the wrong direction and away from democracy.

I hope that Democrats find the right voice to combat any injustice and to preserve the rights we have gained in the last eight years including the ACA.

I hope that we all - every caring American - stand with the vulnerable in the face of what's coming.

I also sincerely hope I'm wrong about Trump.

I don't believe that I am.

Nice idea. I hear Las Vegas is giving odds of Trump being out in 6 months. But then we'd get Mike Pence, who while seemingly normal compared to Trump, is rabidly conservative, such as with his belief in gay conversion therapy.

Obama`s inercia Will give great beginning for Trump. Lets find out how long it will does it takes. In my country Brazil, our experience here is about 13 years to empeach a popular goverment once he is with all power in your hands even if he did everything wrong along this period. I hope we can survive.

It's difficult to contemplate my hopes for the Trump Presidency when I hear "carnage stops right here" and "the time for empty talk is over" with hope and change leaving the building.

End welfare as a lifestyle. Stop pandering to perverted lifestyles (references to this have been deleted from the WH website - good start). Undo the fiasco of Obamacare. I mean, how much space do I have here...
Ceadan (New Jersey)
You mean stop pandering to the perverted lifestyle of stockpiling guns, denying climate change and supporting hate-based organizations that hide behind the fig leaf of organized religion?

Oh dear. Too much apparently.

I hope the Donald returns to his Democratic roots and brings "healthcare to all", jobs and tax cuts for the middle class, and systematically uses his veto power to fully expose and finally dismember the Republican obstructionist congress and causes them to implode. You see, Donald is the social dominator the authoritarian under-belly of this country needs. Ironically, if he gives them their marching orders, they will go where and do what their 'strong man-daddy' tells them -- without resistance. I hope he is the "Manchurian candidate" democracy needs.
Karthy (Orlando)
There is no doubt about that. Trump is part liberal, part conservative. He may not be the right person, but we need to Stalin to defeat Hitler. By Hitler, I am referring to the establishement nonsense. Unfortunately, those who hate Trump, both from the right and left, are just carrying the water for the establishment. They don't even know they are supporting the worst possible option, because they are programmed to think so.

Karthy - not to be a know it all, but the more I know about the Nazis the more I truly believe that it was all the US and Britton that literally conquered the Nazis. There is a great deal to know about the Nazis and if you find out that Stalin murdered many more individuals and children, on the same quantitative level as the murders committed by the Nazi, you might not give Stalin any credit at all. We were dealing with 2 monsters in WW2.
Kevin (Tokyo)
I hope he seeks the help he so clearly needs. Narcissistic personality disorder is tough to deal with - especially for those around the person.
Andrew Arslanpay (Pittsburgh)
My hope is that the damage done under Trump is not permanent.

Trump will obviously have at least one Supreme Court Justice to nominate, potentially more. Coupled with the large power invested in the Executive and Republican's complete control of Congress (which means little opposition to Trump's policy decisions), I'm already expecting the damage to take decades to undue.

Based on his cabinet picks, I hope there is still a healthy middle class in four years. I hope that we didn't just sacrifice the environment and our planet at the altar of capitalism. I hope that individual liberty and the rights of the minority are still concrete and real, rather than dreams of the past. I hope that the military-industrial complex does not tighten its already iron grip over our Republic. I hope that we exercise restraint and remember the cost, in lives and dollars, of war.

I hope for many things, but I have a very bad feeling about the future.
Karthy (Orlando)
On reading some comments here, I sense the deep sense of hatred for Trump. So much so for the slogan "love hates Trump". Pathetic liberals should really know how to express their views. If they write comments like "wish he dies" "wish he fails" "Hope he gets impeached" sounds more like negative vitriol. I am not a conservative, but I once had very high opinion of the liberals, despite my friends pointing out they are just as trash as the right wingers. Now, after seeing the true face of the liberals, I will consider their views and ideas with a pinch of salt. Besides, their expression of their views in this election is abysmal; while, after the elections, they have been acting like spoiled kids and drunken lunatics. They are like cursing the other side, because they lost the game, badly. If you blame Trump for the caustic comments, just read the comments in this section and you will say Trump is far better than the so-called liberals. But then again who am I talking too? Liberals, who are living in a la la land, far away from the realities of life.
Matty (Boston, MA)
Pathetic is being a paid shill for Trump.

I did not vote for President Trump but I have been trying very hard to find some hope as he has lead a transition and nominated people for his cabinet. Unfortunately nothing has happened or been said that gives me any hope at all. The politicians are doing what they always do- fight. The President just gave a speech that was dark. His cabinet appointments, except for a few, are billionaires (members of the Wall Street elite or donors) with no experience governing. President Trump has made me cringe as I listen to his comments about foreign policy- especially with Russia! I have also tried to listen to the voices of Trump supporters, but their actual views are almost always drowned out by vitriol. I do not remember a time in this country when things seemed to be going so wrong. I fear we are actually headed to the darkness President Trump describes. But I will continue to do what I have always done- work for the betterment of my family and my community. That is what I can influence most right now. I will also pray that the checks and balances within our government actually work. They will be tested now as they have not been tested since the civil war.
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
If you study law you will find that the idea that a single person in any part of the government can wield all power is erroneous. Richard Nixon dug himself into the grave of vetos. He made himself unpopular by failing to communicate and reciprocate with the Senate, with the House, and the people. Lots of us remember very clearly who Richard Nixon really was and no matter the monies around him, he could not prevail as a president.
Bill Camarda (Ramsey, NJ)
But, Chris G., if you study history you know that law doesn't always prevail against demagogues who set out to destroy it. Checks and balances need to be enforced by an active citizenry that understands and believes in them.

As am immigrant myself, and in the IT industry, I have seen that too many unnecessary jobs are "created" to further self-interest. There is simply no place for less-skilled programmers creating bugs to get more employment for their ilk. We need quality programmers from India. And these people should be brought from across the breadth and depth of the country. Right now local politics dictates what people should get to the US. This should be done away with. Get quality people and just a handful. Don't measure everyone with the same yardstick. Expect to get fake resumes from individuals and even companies. Make it a policy to have a non-desi interview people. Make it compulsory for atleast 50% to be non IT people. Again stressing that local politics in India should not determine who gets to the US. Pure talent should be the decider. I want to see this change.
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
Gee Mr. India. I see it completely opposite. I have worked in engineering companies where the US trained and educated engineers were infiniitely better and had more breadth of knowledge than anyone person from India working at the same company.

We need to re employ all the Americans who have been thrown away due to the illegal bargaining of Indian owned companies who hire and maintain Indian only employees. Those Americans include African Americans, Taiwanese Americans, Korean Americans, Native Americans, and all the other types of Americans who were descended from other countries but claim their nationality as Americans.
Gráinne (Virginia)
Trump needs to understand that Washington, DC, is a city full of people. The city has survived Presidents for centuries.

Don't confuse the people of DC with politicians, good or bad. The difference between DC and the rest of the US is that residents of the District do not have full voting rights. They can elect the City Council and the Mayor, but Congress has veto power over most of what they do. They have "shadow" Senators and one Representative. They can sponsor legislation, but cannot vote. There is no full suffrage without full representation in the House and Senate.

Most offices are open on Inauguration Day. Look at the road and bridge closings along with Metro closings, many of which started early Thursday, if you want to see what it's like to live in DC. Remember that the Secret Service ordered many roads permanently closed after 9/11. We never know who picks what roads to close or when.

When Bush 43 was getting ready to party on the night of his Inauguration, traffic was stopped by the back gate to the White House. It was dark, windy, and about 10°F. We sat there for 90 minutes, watching a DC Cop freeze. Finally 43 was driven out. He had the gall to wave at us. We waved back with one finger.

My drive home took two hours extra (half-way across the city). Someone tried to stop me for the dummy motorcade over by the Capitol. I was not in the mood and drove on. Why live in the District? I was born there. Murder Capitol and all, it was home.
Violet (DC)
Most offices are not open today, I'm sorry to hear that yours was open.
It is a federal holiday and if you were born here and you still tried to drive into the city instead of finding an alternate route, then you have nobody to blame but yourself.
Will grant you troublesome road closures pop up and are a pain but today of all days, one of expects the worst and plans accordingly. This day is never a surprise.
Ian (Woodwose)
I hope that Trump sweeps away the unconscious bias towards the liberal left in our institutions, government, media and especially education. We should never again have the IRS using viewpoint discrimination in their decisions regarding organizations. We should never again allow employees for the Interior department, the EPA or any other government agency to collude with activists to sue the government in order to force un-legislated change through the courts. We should never again see the media cheerleading for a leftwing candidates running to maintain the status quo. And we should never again allow colleges to barge into conflicts that either merit criminal charges or not to victimize a member of a supposed privileged group. If he does that and balances the budget, removes hundreds of thousands of pages of ridiculous and unnecessary regulations, and maintains world peace through American strength, he will be a true hero.
josephis (Minneapolis)
You are raving.
Jack and Louise (North Brunswick NJ, USA)
Who determines what in those "hundreds of thousands of pages of ridiculous and unnecessary regulations" is ridiculous and unnecessary? Have you ever considered why those regulations may be so detailed that they occupy so many pages? It's because dishonest "business people" have figured out ways to game the system so that they can still pollute, or build unsafe buildings, or sell dangerous products, and claim that they aren't breaking the law. Those regulations have too be both very exact and cover all potential situations.

Maybe you should explore just why those regulations exist instead of parroting that old Conservative canard about "job-destroying regulations." It's been 40 years now that we've been hearing it and it's getting very old.
Dan (Here)
"Maintain peace through American strength"? He has already brought discredit to US standing in the world with contradictory and uninformed statements. He is more likely to create conflicts and weaken America. If he does what he said (and it's not clear if he can), he will have put an end to a historical cycle that started after WWll. Not 1945-1991 and the end of the USSR, but 1945-2017 and the end of the American century. But maybe it is not bad after all.
Vivian Sadow (Chicago, IL)
I woke up this morning with an inaugural stomachache, followed by an inaugural headache.
I have no hope that this bullying demagogue with the instincts of a tyrant will approach his responsibilities in any manner other than one of volatility, irrationality, and self-aggrandizement. He has surrounded himself with dangerously greedy and truly sinister cohorts. But the people who voted for him will, I fear, never admit it when he fails them (as he will); they will blame the media, liberals, moderates, Hollywood, academics, scientists, thinkers and philosophers, comedians and satirists, and anyone (and it is a vast field) that they, in their perceived wisdom and endless resentments, can point to as the "other." As for impeachment--it ain't gonna happen. And if it did, would President Pence--a very focused right-wing conservative--be any relief from the dark days ahead? I doubt it.

We are both damned and doomed. I wish it were not so. I have almost no hope that I am wrong. All I can hope for is that our democracy is still intact and not utterly in shreds in four, or even eight, years. The assault on the progress we have made in the last 60 years (an assault begun under Reagan) is about to intensify exponentially.

Goodbye, Supreme Court.
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
Come on, is that how you handle reality? Your opinion is not worth anything if you don't realize that a Democracy of a Republic is a work in progress and involves constant work. There is no free lunch.
Vivian Sadow (Chicago, IL)
If this is a comment on my comment, please clue me in. I'm not sure what you are trying to say. I never said that a democratic ideal was inertia. What are you talking about?
Will Bozo the POTUS ever button his jacket?

He can't - too much tummy bulge. Also notice how big his jacket shoulder pads are> That's to balance his very wide middle girth against his shoulder width.

I hope the 60 million people who voted for Trump get exactly the government they deserve.

I hope that he understands that the absolute worst possible government overreach or invasive regulation is legislation that controls my reproductive rights. He is against the government putting its hands in people's pockets. I am against government putting its hands in my body. I want him to support a woman's right to choose, although this is the man that bragged about grabbing women's sexual organs without their permission so this is a faint hope.

Sadly, my primary hope is that all Trump's baggage will result in impeachment and removal from office in short order and with minimal fuss. His baggage is a litany of well documented paths to downfall: possible collusion with the Russians, possible dirt the Russians have on him, possible indebtedness to the Russians and other foreign powers, his domestic conflicts of interest and his international conflicts of interest (likely to become breaches of the Constitution's Emoluments clause), etc. Not to mention that he has managed to motivate the intelligence community to dig up as much dirt as possible on him.

Trump is a man who sees the world as a gutter and that gutter will engulf him.

His conflicts of interest are so vast that the weight of them from the constant questioning of his motives for personal and familial gain will eventually make it impossible for him to govern. Congressional gridlock is mild compared to the executive gridlock he is setting in motion. The public will simply lose confidence in him and that we seal the deal for his removal from power by a Republican Congress fearful for their own political lives.

As much as i disagree with Pence, Trump is simply a disaster—no longer waiting to happen—but happening now. Since his election he has been hell bent on a crash and burn path to his own destruction. Maybe within two years? Let's hope the nation comes out the better for it. We'll see...
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
I am going to stop here but impeachment means what the dictionary states, to catch a person who has taken an oath of honesty in a lie of such tremendous size and importance that the lying itself is grounds for removal from public office.

To impeach someone is to attempt to discredit their statements with facts that contradict sworn testimony or declarations.

So, people have to stop muttering the word impeachment until there is such a circumstance that warrants it.
TintoFino (NYC)
I am afraid that like Mr. Trump, you are a little unclear on that facts. Regardless of what dictionary you are referring to for your general definition of impeachment, the impeachment we are talking about HERE is the impeachment in Article II of the United States Constitution, which states in Section 4 that states:

"The President, Vice President, and all civil Officers of the United States shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors." And for your information, as per Wikipedia: "The House of Representatives has the sole power of impeaching, while the United States Senate has the sole power to try all impeachments. The removal of impeached officials is automatic upon conviction in the Senate."

I advise you to check your U.S. Constitution. Although, I wish it were your definition at work here, considering that President Trump, who took the oath of office today, has been copiously documented to regularly lie, and on the record. If your definition were true, it would only be a matter of days until he perpetrated and impeachable offense. It will take quite a bit more than that before he is actually impeached. However, some argue that the first time after he has taken the oath of office that a foreign government official stays at one of his hotels he might be in breach of the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution. I suspect some legal action on that front is at the ready.

We'll see!
Tom Wanamaker (Neenah, WI)
I don't have much hope for Trump. He and those who believe his flim-flam are delusional. He has already been quoted as saying, "America will be great again when I say it is." Talk is cheap.

He talks about putting the focus on the needs of the people. He talks about how "the Washington establishment" has looked out for its own interests and that that is going to end.

Even if he were sincere, "draining the swamp" is easier said than done. The most I expect is for him to show up at a few factories (like he did with Carrier) to pretend that all those jobs that have been lost are back.

I would be very surprised if his actions amount to anything except fouling up what might have worked up until now.

I don't tie myself to any party and find what we learned in kindergarten, to have open minded communications before lashing out and snatching the new crayons with the sharp points. Having met the showboater as nineteen year old in the mid-eighties. I call bull s**t. Trump is the bully who'd breaks all the crayons and blames someone else if they aren't his. I do have to admire his ability to make people believe the unbelievable. Being told enough about how great something is you then question your first instincts and just believe you're wrong. Psych 101.

My family lived in Berlin when the wall was in place and when it came down. My calls were monitored. I saw crosses of people trying to escape to a better life. Every country between us and Russia are nervous thus hyper-sensitive to slights and "you" comments. They have reason to be afraid.

All I ask is that you please do your due diligence, fact check, don't second guess your instincts and learn from history so we don't repeat blindly.

Plus, read "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" by Robert Fulghum. Maybe we aren't as grown up as we pretend to be.

If you read these comments, the number 1 hope is for Trump to fail. I had thought that the Democrats were too conservative under Clinton, but I never thought theyd start acting like Republicans.

Im surprised that people here arent actively asking for his assassination. Im sad Democrats are so up in arms that they actually want Trump to fail.

I dont like Trump and I didnt vote for him. I am a MIT-educated transgender woman, and I believe that Trump is dangerous. However, I hope he succeeds as president, and represents all of us as he takes the reins of this nation.

My hope is for the impossible: That Trump experiences an epiphany and does the following: rids his staff and cabinet of American Nazis, racists, wealthy executives with zero experience serving justice and the people; does not toss the Affordable Care Act overboard, and with it the lives of many Americans, and learns why, even though we have nuclear weapons, we should never, ever use them.

My realistic hope is that the harm Mr. Trump inflicts is at level we all, and the country, might survive until his conflict of business interests results in his inevitable impeachment.
Ed (S.V.)
I hope he improves the financial circumstance of ordinary working people who are not wealthy. I hope he doesn't support bigoted policy ideas that many of his ardent supported espouse. I hope he doesn't start any wars. I hope he helps the middle class Americans who voted for him. I can't think of any time when he has done anything for anyone but himself, but maybe that will change. I doubt it though.
Jacqueline (Colorado)
I hope that Trumps presidency finally breaks the hold that neo-liberal have on the Democratic party.

Hillary Clinton lost the Electoral College because she is a neo-liberal who doesnt have the interests of the working class in mind. She lost working class voters by cosying up to Wall Street and saying her goal was to create open borders.

I voted for Bernie Sanders in the caucus (although my vote didn't count because Id only been a Democrat for 1.75 months instead of 2 months) and I think its pretty clear that his progressive policies would have won the day in places like Michigan and Wisconsin.

I hope the Democrats can become the party of the people. If they lost to Trump, they will lose again if they dont become a progressive voice for real progress for everyone.

On this terrible day, what are our dreams for the next four years? Here are some of mine:
- That millions of our countrymen who were persuaded by empty and incoherent sloganeering come to their senses and realize they made the mistake of our lives
- That resentment, hatred and fear do not continue to thrive as political values
- That, once and for all, we put to rest the lie that government can be run like a for-profit corporation
- That Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security benefits are not denied to the countless millions who not only depend on them for survival but have already paid for them.
- That the scoundrels named to the Cabinet are revealed, one by one, to be incompetent, dishonest and ineffective.
- That the rising tide of ignorance and ideology do not overtake the institutions of education, science and journalism
- That political debate returns from the realm of alternate realities
- That the separation of church and state remains an inviolable tenet of the nation
- That our government upholds its duty to protect those who need it the most and guarantee the rights of those who would otherwise be mistreated
- That free speech is not sacrificed to a false patriotic fervor
- That corruption in government does not become so routine that we no longer notice it
- That he doesn’t tank the economy
- That America does not become the laughingstock of the world
- That he doesn’t provoke a war that leads to global annihilation

I hope that all Americans see Trump's true colors; that intelligence and national security agencies continue to investigate the Trump-Putin links and, that the media expose the conflict of interests and corruption of the president and his cabinet. Will a GOP Congress impeach a republican president? Will some members of the cabinet end up in prison?

Summary: I hope that the Constitution and laws are followed by everybody and enforced by the authorities and the judicial system.

That he is paralyzed by lawsuits and an immediate impeachment process until the Democrats take back the Senate and as governors; and that those terrible people he has nominated for the posts of Interior, EPA, Education, and Agriculture are not approved. My Trump-hopes are that his American Carnage presidency is at least as short as his inauguration speech was.
Gobsmacked (Friday Harbor)
I hope we're all wrong and that he will NOT drive us into a catastrophic world War III, wreck our mended economy, accelerate devastation to the planet caused by global warming, influence an entire generation of boys to become misogynistic predatory racist bullies, influence an entire generation of girls to lose faith in their skills intelligence and abilities to make a difference beyond the home if they choose, terrorize immigrant families who work hard pay their bills and love our country, reverse decades of progress in LGBT rights and our right to marry and live average lives, change the course of American history backward 200 years....
Jacqueline (Colorado)
Im a super liberal. I voted for Jill Stein. However, I dont hope Trump gets impeached or is killed. The hatred and desire for Trump to fail is misguided. Trump is the President. If he fails, it is us, the citizens, who will fail.

I hope Trump can move the Republican party away from social issues and focus more on the economy and immigration. If you read NYT articles on immigration, you will see that almost all the commenters dont like open borders. They also see a difference between legal and illegal immigration, something the NYT does not. Trump should secure our border, put people who employ and abuse illegal immigrants in prison, and amnesty all the non-criminal illegal immigrants here.

I hope that he also moves closer to single payer. I pay $400 a month for insurance that doesnt cover the medication I take. That is not right. The end of Obamacare means that there is opportunity to create universal healthcare. I hope Trump has the guts to stand up to his Republican congress and say that Medicare for all is the only solution to our broken healthcare system.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Are you kidding. The GOP "replacement" will be NO healthcare.
MS (NYC)
Hope is not the four-letter word I would use to describe this debacle.

I have a different word in mind..
MMi (NYC)
Well done, Putin, Bannon, Kushner, Rudi, Christie & Director Comey. Well done.
Your puppet will now continue to dance to your tunes of treason & treachery.
The Fake President is all yours!
S Erdal (UK)
Treason for Putin? He should be awarded the highest honour in his country for pulling this off.
Karthy (Orlando)
I am happy that the days of liberal lunacy are over. As a long time subscriber of this newspaper, I sincerely wish NY Times will cover news in a fair and objective manner, rather than with a very deep liberal bias. Besides, liberals need to learn from their identity politics mistakes and the peculiar case of living in a bubble/fantasy, which was broken on Nov. 8th. I see a lot of comments with negative ill-wishes and pessimistic talk. Too bad that they are acting like sulken child, while Trump acts like a grownup. I wish Trump all the best for his sucessful presidency.
Mickey Steward (Buffalo, Wyoming)
He doesn't act like any respectable grown-up I know of that.
jiminy cricket (Right here.)
I need to add another hope to my list:
#8 - I hope that the Alice in Wonderland style of changing the meaning of things will end.
Mike (Cranford, NJ)
Identity politics works, unfortunately; it's exactly what got Trump where he is.
Armando (Illinois)
I hope to continue to write my comments without the fear of having some folks knocking to my door for some questions.
I hope my newborn granddaughter would not suffer from nuke radiations.
I hope to see him fleeing to Russia asking for a status of political refugee. I am confident that his friend Putin would seriously consider his application.
Warren M. Hern MD (Boulder, Colorado)
I hope that Trump is impeached and removed from office before he destroys American democracy and the rest of the world. His ascension to the presidency is the most dangerous thing that has happened to human society since the Black Death in the 14th century.
Warren M. Hern, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D.
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
Dr. please read my comment about impeachment. We cannot "hope" that President Trump will be impeached. Impeachment is not a reaction of the people or of the Senate, House or the Supreme Court. It is a complex process and involves facts that the President committed a mendacity or fraud, or lie of such proportion that he can no longer uphold the oath he took when entering office.
Paul Rauth (Clarendon Hills)
I fear economic depression, war, riots, exceptional corruption, broken laws, pollution, nationalistic hatred and violence. That's for openers. Unparalleled stupidity.
Smugness from politicians in D.C., increasing arrogance of the Republican propaganda machine and so it goes.
Steph (CA)
I hope Trumps leadership doesn't follow in the footsteps of the brutality of Putin. I hope that our country is strong enough to standup to his assault to our institutions.
Jefflz (San Franciso)
The lessons of Germany in 1933 are to take to the streets and protest vigorously every effort Trump makes to destroy America as we know it. We must demand that the Democratic opposition show some spine and stand up in Congress. We must insist that journalists keep the faith, investigate and publish the facts. The nation is now facing a true crisis and democracy will only survive if the people stand up for their rights daily and in every way possible.
Steve Crawford (Ramsey NJ)
Imagine if Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer would come out and say we 're going to do all we can to make Trump a one term president. But that's what Speaker McConnell said 8 years ago. For this gang it's party first and everything else a distant second.
Billy K. (Germany)
If crises are opportunities, I think it is time for the E.U. to become more independent of the U.S.A. I dare not to imagine what it would mean for the Eastern European states if Putin tries again to increase Russia's sphere of influence with Trump refusing to help Europe.
dd369 (New York)
Never have I heard a president's inaugural speech that meant so little, a speech that in some parts was so far removed from reality, a speech that had me grab my hanging head and just shake no, no, no because of it's clear misunderstanding of America's role in the world.
One day (hopefully soon), Trump's reality distortion bubble will burst and sanity will return to our political landscape. Let's hope the damage Trump and his cabinet will wreak will be still be limited at that time.
Ghulam (New York)
Trump's inauguration speech, for some odd reason, sounded like the familiar demagogy of the 1930's Germany.
Prof Emeritus NYC (NYC)
Well, I didn't vote for President Trump but I have to admit the psychology of the country has greatly improved since the election. After 8 tough years, I think we all have a greater sense of hope.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Look up the word "delusion". Trump at 32% approval Obama at 60%
Chris G. (West Sacramento)
OK Professor, have you been reading the NYTIMES and the Wall Street Journal and the Economist? Those publications for the last eight years straight have predicted a turn around of the economy in 2017. Get real and obviously you are not much of a reader or thinker or you would not have written such an ignorant statement.
Kathy (Pueblo CO)
I hope the investigation into the Russian hacking shows a clear link between the russian hacking and Trump and that this whole past elecyion is declared null and void. We could start over again.
Bob Sommer (<br/>)
It's a sad day for our country. Trump cares about on thing and that's himself.
dp (skidel)
That it be brief.
A tweet in the winds of history.
VLE (San Francisco, CA)
I hope that it is the shortest presidential term in history.
Max (Planet Earth)
Within every defeat lies the seed of an equal or greater victory. I hope we find the seed soon.
Andrea (MA)
impeachment and an unprecedented inability of the next 3 or 4 people in the line of succession to take office
Mary Long (San Francisco)
Democratic majorities in the House and Senate in 2018 and beyond.
Robert Laing (Poway California)
I hope I am not seeing the ghost of Hugo Chavez looming over the Trump presidency. Personality cult, unshakeable conviction of the rightness of his cause and an inability and unwillingness to engage in the give and take of democracy make him a likely successor to every populist autocrat.
Donna (California)
Those who naively *hope* Donald Trump has a successful Presidency need to stop and review the things President Trump has stated he wants to accomplish: Banning; Eliminating; Repealing, Ending; Stopping; Replacing: Then tell me if you want this type of Success?
Tom (San Francisco, CA)
It's rare to hear the gospel of unbridled capitalism joined at the hip with a protectionist bent. I hope for the sake of the union it works but fear history lessons showing us otherwise.
Building Rockets (Austin, TX)
I hope he realizes that he is the most unpopular incoming president in history, lost the popular vote by two million votes, and thus does not have the mandate to rule from the far right. Failing that realization, I hope we stand as a nation and resist until he and his cronies are driven from the government.
Rosemary Manesis (Potomac, MD)
My hope for a Trump presidency is that it ends as quickly as possible, resulting in the man's impeachment and incarceration for treason.
Max (Planet Earth)
My hope is to see him led away in handcuffs sometime during the first 100 days.
Sonny (Chicago, Illinois)
I hope that this great nation survives Trump's Presidency.
Tommy Weir (Ireland)
Truncated is the primary wish. Short of that, ineffective. Actually ineffective and truncated sounds pretty good.
Bucketomeat (The Zone)
I hope the next 4 years provides a strong teachable moment illustrating why we need a social safety net. Unfortunately, this will mean that things need to get really, really bad first. There's a line in an old song that says that you don't miss your water 'til your well runs dry. Let the drought begin.
Chris G (Boston area, MA)
I hope that he doesn't get us all killed.

(No, I am not being facetious.)
Matty (Boston, MA)
“I hope he's successful in creating jobs for the underemployed and refurbishing the Rust Belt economy.”
— cat48, Charleston, S.C.

You can't be serious? "Make America Great Again" was a campaign slogan. A lie. He never meant it so please stop dreaming.
Those factories / jobs are NEVER coming back simply because America is no longer the only player / producer like it was throughout the 1950s while the rest of the developed world was still emerging from its wartime ruins. There was no competiton. As the rest of the developed world rebuilt, with American materials, they began producing their own, and no longer bought or needed ours, which is why, by 1970, those jobs began to disappear if they weren't already gone.
We are now and have been since at least the last 50 years or more competing against them as well as against automation. No, it wasn't unions that killed those jobs / industries. It was plain old competition and when you have to compete you need to be relentlessly competitive and that doesn't mean you need to tow the line to your "shareholders." EVERYONE has a stake in a business, from CEO to the janitor. The cost of labor? Germany pays their union labor among the highest wages in the world per particular industry. We could too, that is, IF the "American Model" of "The Business Exists For The Shareholders (and the CEOs DESERVE millions in compensation" model is changed.
NYBrit (NYC)
You said it!
Ryan (Texas)
One hope has already been fulfilled. Trump referred to himself only 3 times in his speech today vs referring to the people 45 times. Obama has set records for the number of times he refers to himself in speeches most recently referring to himself 75 times in a presidential farewell speech in Chicago.

Only time will tell if the "people-centric" focus of the actions matches the rhetoric.
Matty (Boston, MA)
One thing is for sure, your rhetoric matches your intelligence. You have a chip on your shoulder because of Obama.
Gabbyboy (Colorado)
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but the "people" he's referring to are billionaires.
tony zito (Poughkeepsie, NY)
Don't. Hold. Your. Breath.
Pditty (Lexington)
I am going to resist and push back with all my might and dollars I can afford to spend.

President Con Man...you better lace up your boots because the game is on.
Patrick (Ann Arbor MI)
Hope? I wish I had some.
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
From "Hope" to "Dope."
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
I hope that the audacity of our hope will prevail. I hope that this shameful play on that simple and dangerous human desire for Simple Solutions , ignorant of the facts, will waken us to participation, to action. On climate change, economic justice and income equality, women's and racial rights (among others), cultural and religious ecumenism that allows us to see past our differences... Barack Obama's constant message, including today before boarding the plane at Andrews Air Force Base (and everyone needs to watch this, as it is his first articulation of how to proceed): yes we can. Yes, WE can. YES WE CAN.
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
Well, the double down on John Lewis tells us what to expect.
Secretdreamer (Southern California)
I hope for an event or series of events so transparent that the faux news Breitbart reading non critical thinking electorate will suddenly wake up and have a burning desire for truth and morality. They will repel fake news and lies and insist on hearing only the truth. They will become critical thinkers while they realize how much stronger we are together and how hate and divisiveness only hurts us all.
Mickey Steward (Buffalo, Wyoming)
hahahahahaha - in your dreams!
Jeff (<br/>)
Brevity.
Purple patriot (Denver)
I hope Trump will cross the aisle and work with both democrats and republicans to get things done. My fear is that he will buy into the usual republican agenda and partisan vitriol. If so, his presidency will be four wasted years.
wfhansen (Yakima, WA)
Fasten your seat belts and make sure your tray tables and carry on baggage are secured. It's a rainy and stormy day and we can expect a great deal of turbulence.
I would also suggest an occasional anti-emetic just to take the edge off on the nausea that will surely follow.
Heather (Wisconsin)
He represents everything I oppose: corruption of money in politics, destruction of equal rights, elimination of bank regulations, environmental regulations, women's rights, social protections like health care and education, scientific standards, the erosion of plain human decency and compassion... so it is in the spirit of protecting my own values and those of what America represents, I hope he fails miserably.
Piotr (Poland)
Obama already did, what are you talking about ? Now there is a new sheriff in town.
Karthy (Orlando)
By wishing him ill-luck, you are wishing America to fail and get lost. So much so for American values. I once had a very high opinion of the liberals, now they are just as bad as right wing nut jobs.
Dan (Here)
It's not a question of "luck". It's serious this time: if the recipe is bad, you don't want to eat the dish.
michael (nj)
I hope that we stay vigilant and strong. I believe this administration needs watching and due to this I am a supporter of the ACLU. My hopes are that we have overestimated the horror of this presidency like we overestimated Hillary's success at beating him. My heart feels broken however and I fend of fear constantly.
Oakwood (New York)
The one constant in history, is that pages will turn. The Democrats lost touch with the working class, the elites with the common man, and the political establishment with reality. And so, the page turned. Whether you like him or not, support him or wish him ill, take a good look around and remember. This is what things look like when working men and women take back their country.
Matty (Boston, MA)
Ah, no. The "working class" lost touch with itself. The working class abandoned the democratic party for a story line, a lie incessantly perpetuated by an entire political faction, the republican party, that has never supported the working class.
The country NEVER left, so it's not possible to, proverbially, take it back.
If you think putting a billionaire in this position is evidence of "the working class" taking their country back you need a lesson in civics.
Mickey Steward (Buffalo, Wyoming)
Right, working people, of which I am one, are taking back the country by being led by a parcel of billionaires? The very thought would make a cat laugh.
Gabbyboy (Colorado)
It's the billionaires who are taking back this country.
Rachel Fowler (London, UK)
I have no hope for his presidency. I believe it will be destructive and do nothing more than line his own pockets, strip our country of resources and deepen the divide.
roren53 (Minneapolis)
Why is the impeachment taking so long ?
Kathy (Pueblo)
An impeachment would leave us with pence but if they are both convicted of being involved in the hacking would they be disqualified?
Kevin (New York, NY)
I hope I can find my Canadian passport!
Karthy (Orlando)
Please don't crash the Canadians. Have some mercy!
Elizabeth O'Hara (Massachusetts)
I hope to survive it... literally.
Juliette MacMullen (Pomona, CA)
John Green — 'At some point, you just pull off the Band-Aid, and it hurts, but then it's over and you're relieved.' Our American prayer today--may it be swift, painless, and relief imminent.
Jefflz (San Franciso)
Trump is not our president. He was put in office by the Russians and the FBI.
Liz Shura (Brooklyn)
It's incredibly hard to sustain hope in the usual sense of the word, knowing what a huge swath of my fellow citizens genuinely didn't care about anything meaningful when they voted. Not facts; not ideas; not their neighbors; not themselves, in the end.
sheila (berkeley)
that his criminal behavior and lying self finally be exposed in all their fullness and that he lasts not even 100 days, though I must say the idea of Pence and his fascist cabinet brings me no comfort either. In my 82 years on this planet, I do not deserve this nightmare at the end of my days. awful.
Mickey Steward (Buffalo, Wyoming)
I second this emotion! Worked all my life as hard as I could, seeing progress on women's rights and more inclusive treatment, thinking we were making progress and then being cut off at the knees by a fat rich racist white man with a trophy wife. What a bummer!
Valerie (France)
I hope Americans don't lose hope and don't give up following everything he says and does. I hope they will hold him accountable for every decision and every conflict of interests, everyday, everywhere for the next 4 years. I hope people abroad, and especially among the US traditional allies, won't jump to the conclusion he and his administration embody America. I hope they won't feel it proves that the worst clichés on America are in fact true. I hope the US won't wake up in 4 years facing an estranged Europe durably absorbed in the Russian sphere of influence. I have faith in the vitality of American civil society and civic tradition. I sincerely hope I'm not wrong.
Armando (Illinois)
I hope this is just a nightmare.
Jim Rogala (Rochester, NY)
You can't help but feel the next four years are going to miserable. Trump will remind us every day that he is President, a job he's completely unqualified for. Just counting the days until enough info & facts are revealed & verified to break Harrison's record.
"You're FIRED!!!"
Piotr (Poland)
Miserable ? That was the last eight ! This is finally a new dawn.
Gabbyboy (Colorado)
Are you a billionaire? If not you're not safe.
Piotr (Poland)
No but I lost my insurance and the doctor I liked under Obama.
Anne Bergman (NYC)
I hope radical change can happen. I'll engage far more to agitate for the change I want if I am stuck with Trump--more local dollars spent locally. Less federal interference in NY and NYC issues and greater empowerment of our city and state government to tend to our own. Why not a tri-state version of the ACA for example?
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
If you want change, spend a little. As possible.

Work slowly. For change.
joseph (Ohio)
This is likely the outcome. Republican market-based health care in some states and ACA type coverage in others. The effect being no ability to "buy across state lines" one of the "cures" to the ACA.
Jonathan Taylor (Los Angeles)
I hope President Trump doesn't live up to all my expectations.
Nacho (Madrid)
I hope that either he is profoundly and truly changed by the reality of your beloved and torn country or that he is swiftly impeached before he does any more harm than he's already done to Americans.
Marian (Phoenix, Arizona)
I feel like I am standing on quicksand at the edge of a chasm. Everything I believe is bring challenged by Trump and the Republican Party.
Piotr (Poland)
Good, maybe now you'll join reality instead of the looney left.
Steven (Brooklyn)
I hope he doesn't start nuclear war.
Ellie (oregon)
His talk has never matched his actions. Based on his cabinet picks, it appears that he has no intention of serving the middle class or poor. He serves the wealthy and uses the poor and middle class. That is his history and one can only hope that his attitude will change, but a zebra does not change it's stripes.
Sandy Curtiss (MO)
In the context of the very Christian, non-interfaith tone of the inauguration ceremony's prayers, I fear that Trump's call in his speech for "...God's people liv[ing] together in unity" and "pursuing solidarity" mean unity his way and solidarity his way, with dissent not tolerated. I hope I am wrong.
Mickey Steward (Buffalo, Wyoming)
Hasn't everyone noticed how Trump (when he is not talking about himself) is always talking about "people like us." I'm not like him one bit but I am a patriotic American. He means white rich people like him.
merc (east amherst, ny)
Superman returning and spinning the earth in reverse (like he did to save Lois Lane from getting crushed as her car slips deeper into a crack in the highway) back to election day giving all those who didn't get off their lazy butts and vote to do just that, vote for Hillary Clinton, get her elected and end this nightmare we're being subjected to.
Deanna Lopez (California)
My hope is that he will be be impeached or resign before too much damage is done. Please note he is speaking to "citizens" in his inaugural speech, and he means citizens only.
Erich (Miami)
It's amazing how this president is unable to communicate ideas, thoughts or considerations, everything is incendiary count short lived words, this mind set is taking over the most powerful office on earth, it's really scary and overwhelming, even the heaven cried
Ryan (Texas)
I hope to have a government that cares more for impoverished native citizens than those illegally crossing our sovereign borders....

I hope to have a government that cares more for native citizen veterans health than illegal immigrant health.....

I hope to have a government that bothers to read legislation vs "You have to pass the bill to find out what's in it"...

I hope to have a government that can generate a full year of GDP growth over 3% rather than a few quarters here and there for nearly a decade....

I hope to have a government that holds countries accountable when they violate free trade deals by subsidizing their native industries, imposing extra tariffs on imported US goods and devalue their currencies.....

I hope to have a government that takes a new and critical eye at our foreign commitments and is willing to ask the question, "Can we really be expected to police the entire world?"

I hope to have a government that is willing to ask our allies in NATO why they aren't keeping up with their commitment on minimum GDP expenditures toward defense budgets on the assumption that the US will pick up the slack...

I hope to have a government that doesn't get us into needless wars over middle eastern countries that have little strategic interest for us. Why did we almost go to war with Russia over Syria when Syria LEGALLY invited Russia to assist with their civil war and terror issues.

For millions of Americans...today is a day of hope....
BVolin (NJ)
I hope the NY Times, CNN and the entire Press continue to challenge our President and his Cabinet, continue to surface hypocritical ideas and thoughts, continue to investigate conflicts and continue to hold our leader's feet to the fire. I hope that the mist clears quickly and those who voted for him realize that there is no substance or intention behind his campaign promises, just mist.
Kris (NYC)
I hope that when none of those things comes true, and instead we have YET ANOTHER republican war, and YET ANOTHER republican deregulation-fueled economic meltdown, you realize the error of putting your faith in this man and in the GOP.
Ryan (Texas)
Kris you misunderstand me. I owe allegiance to no-one certainly not the GOP or Trump. I vote strictly based on the issues and what people have shown through their past actions. Hillary has shown repeatedly to be antithetical to everything I just outlined. So I voted for the Devil I didn't know vs the Devil I did. But I am under no delusions they are both Devils and I put my faith in neither.
David (Massachusetts)
I hope that Trump will not destroy America. I hope he won't tear up our international alliances, drop a few nukes, trash our economy, stimulate runaway inflation, and tear apart our healthcare system. I hope that he will stand up to the NRA and not allow America to turn even further into some type of dystopian, gun-toting Wild West. I hope that he won't illegalize abortion.

I am so fearful of Trump and the Republicans who control the House and Senate. I hope some Republican members of Congress will have enough decency and self-respect to stand up to him. Sadly, they are our only hope.
Michael Bain (New Mexico)
My hope is that we get past the need for “Hope”.

We have been using “Hope” as an excuse for way too long for not doing anything of substance to solve our core problems such as wealth inequality, gender inequality, climate change, meaning full employment opportunity, advancing universal publicly funded higher education, and publicly funded infrastructure and land management investments. This is what would actually make America Great—however we are not going to head in that direction.

I do understand that despite Mr. Trump’s sugary inauguration speech, the overwhelming likelihood is that nothing of substance will get done for the working classes and that wealth inequality, indeed all inequality, will be more entrenched and that four years from now "Hope" will still be the basis of our nation’s business plan as the common citizen, and the future, will have been legally plundered by the billionaires and “Hope” will be all there will be left, again.

Enough of “Hope” as an excuse.

Michael Bain
Glorieta, New Mexico
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
Yes, y'all have worked hard to crush hope. Got er done, indeed.
Jim McAdams (Boston)
Having just read Trumps inauguration address I am even more worried than I though. It is filled with ironies and cliches beyond compare. They are magnificent. Before pointing out specifics, the tone made me whistle "Yankee Doodle". There was a time when liberals were accused of being weaned to the tit of the welfare state. How times have changed. In addition to the need for the state to protect there were fascist undertones in his sentence, "A new national pride will lift our sights and heal our divisions". But the ironies really stood out. Madison and Hamilton are both turning with the sentence "January 20, 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again." Anyone afraid of mob rule Mr. Hamilton? How about "The wealth of our middle class has been ripped from their homes and redistributed all across the world." However most was distributed to Mr Mnuchin. Buy American, hire American...but pay your back taxes on domestic help. I was really inspired by "We will reinforce old alliances (?) and form new ones (Russia) and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth." How? More war? Use of nuclear weapons? My favorite irony was saved for the conclusion. "You will never be ignored again." Then release your taxes. Assure us that you and your campaign did not collaborate with Russia. We the people asked you to a long time ago
Michael Fremer (Wyckoff, NJ)
What "carnage" is Trump bleating about? Jobs taken by robots? "Carnage " is what Obama inherited when the auto industry, credit market, stock market, housing market and jobs market all COLLAPSED. Obama stopped the carnage. This poseur will bring that back with more massive debt like all of his businesses have incurred and then he'll blame Obama. His "speech" must have been the same kind that he delivered at the Catholic Charities dinner where he was soundly booed. "Carnage"? Don't expect to hear the word "deficit" for the next four years as his tax cuts ring up HUGE ones. The GOP applied the "deficit" gag order the day after the election.....have you heard the word uttered by any Republicans since then? That's what I thought.
Assay (New York, NY)
I hope that the PEOPLE of the US rise to force public referendum on the following:
(1) Abolish Electoral College since it has failed to serve its purpose in this election cycle
(2) Federally directed voting processes across entire nation
(3) Less politicized process for the appointment of supreme Court Justices.
(4) One term five or six year presidency
(5) Legal framework to control the length and scope of election cycle and campaign finance reforms

Living through four years' (or hopefully shorter duration) of living hell called Trump presidency will be worth the pain if above changes come about.
GCM (Denver)
I am terrified. As a woman, I am terrified that my rights are going to be stripped from me. As a civil servant, I am terrified that the programs we run that serve low income women and children are going to be decimated without a second thought and that our competent staff will leave in droves in the face of pay cuts and layoffs, making our department inefficient. As an educated person with student debt, I am terrified my children will not have access to the same education that I did, or the federal aid to pay for it. As a global citizen, I am terrified that we will become the pariah of the world.

He spoke about representing the people - what people is he referring to? He fills his cabinet with unqualified donors and surrounds himself with billionaires - we are heading for oligarchy faster than many care to think.
Nobody (Nowhere special)
My hopes are simple:

1: That we all survive it.
2: That we do not give up on facts and reason.
3: That Trump at least tries to do the right thing.

I am optimistic on one point though. Trump seems to be the first Republican since Reagan who believes that government is capable of doing something right. All the others just repeat the mantra "Government doesn't solve problems. Government *is* the problem."

If you think about it, it's hopeless to try to form public policy with such a nihilistic foundation. That seems to be the root of the partisan gridlock we've had for so long.

If Trump genuinely tries to do the right thing and he believes he is able to do some good, then all that remains is to find some common ground on which problems are worth solving and how to go about it.
William (NYC)
My hope for his presidency is that he enrages so many of us that we rise up and shout him out by putting pressure on our elected officials to do something about immigration, healthcare, and his poor choice of appointees.

Although he is repugnant, he does bring us a chance to organize, resist, and move forward with determination, and non violently expressed rage

O Lord our God arise,

Lest we have war:

On Thee our hopes we fix:
God save us all.

Hearing about the "American carnage" we're living in was particularly disturbing. I didn't know that our lives were so terrible. Mr. President, thank you for disabusing me of the idea that before you were sworn in there were good people doing good things in our country every day.
wally wallace (The Center of the Universe, formerly Texas)
I am saddened and frightened beyond words. The United States will most assuredly fall down the "rabbit hole." More war, dangerous nationalism, world isolation, the rape of public lands, polluted water and air, no separation of church and state, and general incompetence from a corporate and religious-right cabinet. If you have faith, start praying now! Not my President. Not now. Not ever. Never
MMi (NYC)
Lincoln, MLK, RFK, Rosa Parks & others must be SPINNING . . .

And, The Founding Fathers must be KICKING themselves for what has become of The Electoral College.

God help America. ALL the gods!
Strider (NY)
Frankly, I hope he fails.

I hope the Dems hang tough and treat Trump exactly as the GOP treated Obama.

Trump's agenda is angry and pessimistic. We must prevent him from succeeding. If he does, then America loses.

I want my country back! Yeah, how does it sound now, rightwingers?
Ben Littler (Austin, TX)
Take care of the country, Mr. Trump - and show us that you can be a uniting, not a dividing force. So far you have not shown us anything of the sort, but I'm going to give you a chance.

Oh, and kindly find another outlet for your emotions that doesn't involve tweeting in the middle of the night. A punching bag with Putin's face on it would be a good start.
Sou (Australia)
I hope Trump doesn't start a war with China.

I have no hope that Trump will deliver all that he promised, given so much of it is built on faulty premises (plus he's contradicted himself already, with his billionaire/vested interest cabinet).

I hope that Pence won't ever become President, and that Trump's reign is brief, with not so much damage that the USA and the world won't recover.

Another hope is that future inaugurations won't be a church service, like this one was. (What a weird ceremony.)
Carol Tuynman (Haines Alaska)
Mr. President, Please wake up and smell the coffee. When are we going to start growing the beans in the US? We all want our java too. Looking forward to hearing all the great plans--in detail.
Darcy (NYC)
I hope that all Americans wake up and see that Trump is only a friend to the 1 percent. I hope the people that elected him understand they voted against their own interests. I hope that white supremacists climb back into their holes and remain there. That Trump is impeached via definite proof of malfeasance unearthed by an investigative journalist. I hope that Planned Parenthood survives to provide medical services to women. I hope LGBT rights are upheld. I hope that our healthcare system is not completely destroyed so that only the wealthy can afford healthcare.
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
Read Ryan's and Michael Bain's comments. "Nope" is an article of faith for the y'alls.
j Norris (France)
...we are now officially a banana republic. Sad!
Minkkitty (NYC)
Impeachment
Kate (New York, NY)
So much melodrama in the comments.

My hopes are that he's a good president and will stop warmongering unlike his predecessor.
Stourley Kracklite (White Plains, NY)
You've not paid attention to a word Trump has said.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Well he apparently has not even READ the US Constitution that he is charged with protecting. So the "good president" part is not happening until and IF he "gets it". Otherwise all the blabbing in the world that people want to hear is useless rabble-rousing.
Harry (Redstatistan)
My sincerest hope is the same as I had for Mr. Obama, that he proves to be, for all sides in our country's divides, the greatest president in our history.

Now, let's shut up and see how this plays out.
totyson (Sheboygan, WI)
Ah, Harry, your half right. Let's see how this plays out, but not shut up. If it's good, let praise come where praise is due. That alone would be a change from the last 8 years. And where it is bad, let blame also come. But shut up? That's dictatorship talk...
AJS (New York, NY)
I hope that he and his cabinet realize that by scrapping environmental initiatives, they are destroying the only home we have, and are wiping away the futures of us all - flora and fauna - including their own children and grandchildren. I hope Trump is able to, for once, see outside himself and realizes that yes, even his family will suffer. And I hope he understands that the world is watching, terrified that Trump will unleash environmental disaster.
Charles Stark (Connecticut)
I simply hope his time in office is short and the world survives.
Barbara Parsons (Tacoma WA)
The word "hope," does not really apply to my thoughts going into the next four years. I have no hope that this salesman will unite the country. I have no hope that he will be anything other than what he has already shown himself to be: misogynistic, racist, narcissistic, reactionary, and concerned only about his own and his children and friends' coffers. I do have hope that the majority party will begin to stand up to his upside-down ideology. I believe they will do so only in response to great pressure from their constituents, so my hope is really in the people, we who will protest, write letters, agitate, infiltrate and in every other way make it clear that these men and women have TWO YEARS, only, to prove that they are fit to run this country. Much pressure is on the teachers and professors of the country, who must teach truth and academic rigor in the example of fake news and wishful thinking. Much pressure is on our Democratic leaders in DC, who must stand up endlessly to the smug assumption of a mandate, when no mandate exists. And much pressure will be on the leaders of our cities and states to ensure that the decency and freedom achieved over the last 200 years is maintained for the next decent man or woman who will take the office of president in four years and try to restore our democracy. Make the gods of the ancients and our forefathers protect us; that evangelical god is clearly not at his wheel.
disenchanted (san francisco)
Many other commenters have hoped for the sane, peaceful, remedial things I also hope for, but I'll just add that I hope he STOPS TWEETING.
Amy (Castor)
What hope? How can you even put that question in terms of hope? I hope he gets impeached. I hope our country doesn't erupt into violence. I hope he doesn't pour gas on the flames and ignite rioting and police savagely attacking protesters. I hope the Indians in North Dakota stay safe.
Sallie Laing (San Diego)
I hope, without much cause for optimism, that Donald Trump acquires some manners, some civility, some humility and an awareness of the amazing sleight of hand he's managed to pull off at the expense of so many decent, thoughtful and engaged citizens. We have quite rightly, become used to the high bar and level of civility, inclusiveness and thoughtful governance that Obama treated us to over the last 8 years~everything we should expect and deserve from a President. We must ensure that we continue to expect any President to treat people with respect and dignity, traits that seem to be singularly lacking in this unpopular, 45th President.
Jonathan Baker (NYC)
I strongly recommend that the media monitor intensely what transpires in the next 24 to 48 hours: what will be rescinded in environmental and human rights protections. Keep your eyes open - don't dare blink. Report every little item - the out-of-sight details may be the most destructive.
Pat (NJ)
It's all negative: I hope he doesn't blow up the world with a nuclear attack; I hope he doesn't do what he says and rev up our use of fossil fuels, thereby exacerbating climate change and putting us further behind in a world that is fast developing renewables, I hope he doesn't leave millions of Americans without health insurance, at the very least (I am for Medicare for All, a pipe dream for the next 4 years, I'm sure), I hope he doesn't privatize Medicare, I hope he doesn't start another unnecessary war, and I hope he doesn't crash the economy. Given what he has said in the past and given his Cabinet, I am sorry to say that I have little to no hope for most of these, but the first is the one that keeps me up at night.
Cally (CA)
My hopes? That we don't get nuked. That our economy doesn't crash. That people don't lose their rights. That we don't end up living in a dictatorship.
Zachary Townsend (San Francisco)
On some level I honestly still can't quite believe that the country I love has chosen a man so uniquely unfit to be our leader. I'm scared. Scared for the women in my life. Scared for the people of color in my life. Scared for the LGBTQ folks in my life. Scared for the people whom despite their best efforts struggle financially in my life. Scared for every American, in my life and out of it, that need something positive from their government.
Juliette MacMullen (Pomona, CA)
My hope is that he is removed swiftly. They say you are promoted until incompetent. Yeah but U.S. Presidency isn't a Petri dish for testing. Millions and millions of lives are affected. It is a flaw in the U.S. Government that we must witness this today.....
Nicholas (Los Angeles)
For me, the darkest part of his ascendance is what it lays bare about what many appear to value in this great country: greed, narcissism, and willful ignorance. My hope for his presidency is that he awakens the masses to participate, fully, in our democratic processes and we rise again to the real challenges this country faces - from economic and social injustice to education and healthcare for all to preserving our natural world for our children and grandchildren.
eddie (CA)
The last republican congress passed the least amount of bills in the history of congress and should all have been fired and yet they are rewarded for their performance. May the citizens of this country stand up for themselves, and protect this democracy.
Bob 81 (Reston, Va.)
There is a scandal awaiting to be unveiled in the near future during donald's administration. It sit's in the possession of his friend Putin. One false move by donald toward the Russian and donald is toast.
Jennifer (Chicago, IL)
My hope is that our democracy will survive. My hope is that we are strong enough and brave enough to resist Fascism. My hope is that he will be impeached.
SanPride (Ohio)
I feel like my country has been taken over by an angry mob. Can something good emerge out of the anger, fear and bigotry that propelled DJT into office? My mind says try to be hopeful but in my gut I only feel fear.
RickM (Villard, MN)
I take comfort in the fact that our country has from its inception been an experiment and that the results of experiments aren't always what is expected. The Law of Unexpected Consequences could easily bite us on the nether end, but I hope this will be a wake-up call for both parties and for those who by blithely casting Trump votes have put our democracy at such risk. I firmly believe that most who did so are good Americans and that they will react appropriately when they realize that our new president cares only for himself.
Andy (CT)
That it lasts for one term, or less.
Tim Garibaldi (Orlando)
I hope he gets off Twitter. I hope he moves from chaos to some level of contemplation as an approach to exercising his office. I hope he can marshal his cabinet, and that they stick to their visions as expressed in confirmation hearings. I hope he takes a realistic and skeptical view of Russia. I hope he does not "take healthcare back" to a pre-ACA structure. I hope he does achieve the growth he promised without inflation at twice the rate of growth. I hope he shows compassion and grace. Do I expect any of this? No, I don't.
PghCat (Pittsburgh, PA)
Hopes, what hopes??? It's January 1969 all over again. Brace yourselves for a rough few years ahead, America and the world, with an end forthcoming to this Administration that will rival Nixon's implosion!
Eugene Debs (Denver)
I hope what is accomplished is Trump's impeachment and a solid wall of Democrats opposing every piece of legislation put forth by the Republicans. Also widespread resistance in the United States to Greed Over People policies (by 'the United States', I mean the blue/democratic states, not red/oligarchy
states).
Rudiger Drees (Australia)
I was listening to Mr.Trumps speech this morning. His press secretary announced before hand that the speech would be more philosophical than practical.Too right. All I heard were slogans and phrases. In regards to his nationalist ideas of the US economy,I would like to know wether Mr Trump has instructed his sons to divest his empire from all foreign connections and sell and rent out his real estate to Americans only.To all those how who think he is the right person to make America great again, remember this. Some people only wish for a dictator until they get one.
steve (Hudson Valley, NY)
My hope is that this country is in 1 piece in 4 years. Trump and his picks terrify me and for the first time in my life, at 57, I am afraid.
Chaparral Lover (California)
What "hopes?" Is it not the Heritage Foundation that is being selected to run the country now? Why pretend the United States is anything more than a corporate oligarchy anymore, right? Let's chose people like Rex Tillerson, Scott Pruit, and Andrew Puzder, who can "manage" the federal government like a corporation? Who (except for billionaires) could hope for anything "hopeful" in that?
Rudiger Drees (Australia)
We no longer live in a society,we live in an economy.Globalisation is the order of the day.Mr.Trump and his side kicks Tillerson and consorts will do everything to make sure, the American people will keep that economy going. The top 1% are in control now.
PK (Lincoln)
Many folks are hoping for impeachment.
First off, their fuzzy thinking is the same stuff that came up with the hare-brained scheme to derail a wildly popular and clean candidate with his bizzaro-world double.
Secondly, that leaves us with Pence.
Thirdly, can they tape their ankles to the table legs to at least slow down the knee-jerk reactions to everything that doesn't meet with their 100% approval?
Jennifer (Chicago, IL)
Yes, we know about Pence, and no, it's not a knee-jerk reaction. When Fascism comes to America, we fight back with every tool at our disposal. We will not "wait and see". We've already seen enough of this traitor.
PAG (New Brunswick, NJ)
I hope that all the Republican conservatives and the people who think they are disenfranchised, marginalized and forgotten, who voted for this wack job, realize by the mid term elections, that they didn't vote for santa claus, that they voted for a snake oil salesman and vote the congress and the senate back to democratic control and restore our democracy.
ck (NJ)
I hope the leadership in Congress recognizes the gravity of this moment and the potential for destruction that Trump represents. They can still stop him from pushing us all over the edge. I pray that collectively they can see that they need to rise above vindictiveness and party loyalty, and knuckle down to do the work of keeping him contained so they can serve our country with the dignity, empathy, thoughtfulness and care that we deserve. Trump wants to make them look like fools so he can blame them for everything that goes wrong. Trump wants to be the only one who can save us. To do that, he has to show that Congress is incompetent, and they seem to be blindly following him to the edge of that cliff. However, it's not too late. The men and women of Congress still have power. They are our last hope. I hope they take their jobs seriously.
Barbarra (Los Angeles)
it was perhaps one of the worst presidential speeches of all time. A man in a bubble of wealth. A self-proclaimed "spokesman" for the working American. Not for me - I pay my taxes, do not profit form other people's misery, and believe in world order and peace. Rain may be construed as a blessing but a deluge brings flooding and misery.
dan (oakland)
I'm hoping for an immediate large tax cut. The sooner and the bigger the better. Repeal the ACA and return the money to the people who earned it in the first place. No replacement should be necessary. People can simply buy health insurance in the marketplace or if they can't afford it tough luck they should have planned better. Let's privatize education as much as possible. Don't have kids and don't want to pay for anyone else's. Thats their private responsibility. That should be good for another tax cut here too.
Claudine Tocci (Broomall, Pa)
Dan, Other people's kids grow up to be doctors and nurse to care for you in old age, other people's kids develop new technologies, discover cures for disease, build homes, maintain the economy and infrastructure and generally do things that you benefit from. It's called a society, and I for one would be happy to provide tax money to make sure the future generations get the best education possible.
dan (oakland)
Well Claudine then maybe you should contribute your own private money to such pursuits if that is what you believe. I have no interest in helping any of the people who elected Donald Trump and would see the pillars of their support wither and crumble. And I'll take my chunk hopefully and go buy a new Porsche. Cheers
BobK (USA)
That he is impeached and removed from office without delay.
Sri (Rockville,md)
People of the country follow their leaders. When the leader himself does not respect the rule of the law of paying taxes calling it smart. Do I have to pay my taxes? . This inauguration ceremony was done using my tax money. Rebuilding America can be done only by means of our tax money. I hope our new President pays his taxes and doesn't use his office for his personal benefit.
PRF (sfo)
I have no hopes; none at all. We have a narcissistic, pathological liar in place whose every action is scripted like a scene from a TV show. If I had a hope at all it would be that he's out of office long before his term is up. And the method used to remove him from office is of no consequence. Just get rid of him.
William Gooley (Boston, MA)
I hope that President Trump takes a step back from the black and white way he has viewed policy thus far and realizes that there are many shades of compromise in between.
Jadida (Massachusetts)
No doubt we as a nation are being pushed out of our comfort zones. May we discover our strengths and hope we come out at the end of it all with our sanity in full tact.
Tony (Philadelphia, PA)
As a patriotic American, I would never wish bad luck for a president, because that would be wishing bad luck for the entire country.
However, based on Trump's remarks, I am not hopeful that will take this country in a positive direction. His cabinet appointments don't match his rhetoric of being "for the people" and the fact that Hillary got almost 3 million more votes looms over his presidency, not to mention Russia's interference with the election.
My hope is that President Trump will be more humble and realize that while he did narrowly win the electoral college, he was not the people's choice. I hope that he will govern with that in mind. I am not holding my breath, but as we have learned, Donald Trump can be full of surprises!
Dan (Here)
Tony, read the WH's website. He is boasting about exactly the opposite, alas!
Laura (Charleston SC)
My hope is that Trump will join the real world and stop living in a fictitious reality created in his own mind.
Bethesda Jack (Bethesda, MD)
Trump's message to the country: The only thing we have to fear is everything!
RABNPA (PA)
The only thing the rust belt will get is rustier.
sherry steiker (centennial, CO)
"I hope", "I wish", Maybe he can", it's ridiculous, he will tear this country apart, stop your hoping, he wants war.
Michael Santiago (Sherman Oaks, CA)
A swift ignominous end to his term of office via impeachment.
PK (Lincoln)
My hope is that true democracy can find its way into the heart and soul of the Democratic National Committee and that the true representative of the will of the people shall be chosen, by an untainted and unbiased system of delegates, to represent us in a fair election.
Instead of, you know, what just went down.
Linda (<br/>)
I hope we are capable of learning from this experience.
Victoria D. (Jersey City, NJ)
I hope Trump's term encourages a more informed & empowered citizenry, as our election demonstrated we do not have one. Whether through this administration or through local or grassroots efforts, we all need a serious education in how our country is governed and how we can positively influence it.
Aamir Hussain (Chicago, IL)
As a medical student, I am concerned about the price of medications for patients. While I do not support a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, I hope President Trump can allow the government to negotiate drug prices, or for the United States to import cheaper drugs from other nations.
melisa (nyc)
This doesn't feel like an inauguration, this feels like a funeral.
Matt Trokan (NJ)
My hope is that President Trump's call for healthcare for all with lower deductibles combined with tax cuts does not amount to an expansion of faith healing initiatives. I have no faith in those.
Randolph Mom (New Jersey)
My hope is that everyone votes in the midterms in 2018 and gets rid of the congress that has allowed President Trump to fill the government with wealthy takers that will serve themselves first
Bruce Weinstein (New York)
President Trump says, "Their home is our home." Why "their" when speaking about our fellow Americans? Speaking this way is divisive. It's especially disturbing since he said it under the pretext of uniting us.
mbdubinsky (NJ)
My hope is that all my anxieties, skepticism, and whining will be put to shame and that this man does the great things he claims he can do.
stgmgr (Seattle)
my hope is he will be impeached within the year although Pence is in many ways even worse.
Arthur Lavin (Cleveland)
The triumph of oligarchy reaches new heights in America. Power and wealth concentrate, now more than ever. The Presidency of Trump glows with the well-honed practice of oligarchy: a firm foundation of emotion-rich propaganda that locks support and destroys the foundations of fact, the true devotion to the #1 goal, the supreme concentration of wealth, and the organization of power so that that concentration is never threatened.
This is a very, very old human story, the concept of democracy was really born to see if a nation could keep it from happening. It has been a strong force in our nation since the first colony, but democracy keeps fighting its fight. Today was a resounding defeat for the human effort to make a government of the people, for the people and by the people. The rise of the American oligarchy is upon us, it is as Obama has said, in our hands to restore, defend, and promote democracy.
mizdeirdre (California)
I'm past caring about specific policies -- I'm just hoping we, and our democracy, survive the next four years. I for one am going to do everything I can to resist.
Bill Blackmon (austin texas)
A quick impeachment and jailing.
Frances Levy (Brooklyn, NY)
I am terrified about the rashness and Impulsivity of this man. I am afraid that he will reverse women's rights. I feel embarrassed and humiliated by his use of Twitter, and how this reflects our nation to the world.
Arthur (Plymouth MN)
We are now being led by a man with no experience in government taking the world's most difficult job. The likelihood of corruption in his administration is greater than anything seen since the Gilded Age. Add to that that virtually none of his cabinet choices are competent to run the agencies they will most likely lead. Tell me, how exactly is this going to end well?
SanPride (Ohio)
I pray for our country on this day of deep uncertainty for our future. I pray that individuals in our government will have the courage to stand up against the many destructive, short-sighted and self-serving policies that have been proposed.
Brian Boyko (Williamsburg, Virginia)
I no longer have hope.
David (CT)
That he does not do anything to short sighted like cause the disbandment of NATO.
Patrick (Orwell, America)
His swift impeachment.
Landiego (Wyoming)
I hope he can be as noble and civil a President as Obama has been. Nothing to date suggests this is remotely possible, but we will give him a chance. Thus far, he has set an incredibly terrible example of what a President is for my two young children.
Joseph (Louisiana)
I hope he does just what it looks like he plans to do. I hope it angers people enough to vote him out in 4 years and elect someone who actually wants to improve life for 99% of the people living in this country.
Billibong Shortstain (SebVAStopol, CA)
I believe Mr. Trump has artfully expressed to the average and below-average American what they want to hear. As Mark Twain said, "It's easier to fool someone than it is to convince them they've been fooled."
Mark (New York)
I noted Trumpster's use of the term "American carnage." However, rather than see the "American Carnage" stop as he promised, we are about to see the "American Carnage" of our democratic institutions and our fundamental American principals commence.
Thomas D. Johnston, MD, FACS (Niagara, WI)
My hope is that the new President will try to break Woodrow Wilson 's record for most rounds of golf played by a sitting president.. A nice start would be playing more rounds than the current runner up-Dwight Eisenhower. If he wants to take the the cabinet and GOP Congress along as caddies, that would by good, too.
Sam Caruso (Michigan)
Considering that Trump has no moral compass or any sense of history, I would say my best hope is that the country is still standing in four years.
Who knew that American democracy was this fragile?
the.bridge (Middletown, CT)
The calm before the storm.
Jim Lomonaco (CT)
I hope he does not begin the destruction of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
palma (TX)
impeachment within 6 months
Montreal Moe (WestPark, Quebec)
My hope is that I am completely and totally wrong and that Donald J Trump will be the greatest President the USA has ever known.
KMLT (Bay Area, CA)
I hope that the US will not enter into an international conflict, that we will not do irreparable harm to the environment, and that there is no lasting cultural shift that normalizes misogyny, racism, intolerance, bullying, and hate.
M. White (New Orleans, LA)
Someone needs to check, but I'm willing to bet that was the shortest inaugural address of any US president. It was thoroughly uninspiring. Trump mostly mentioned how he was going to help American workers, and I fail to see how he's going to do that by surrounding himself with inexperienced billionaires.
jnyc (New York City)
This is a sad day for American democracy, and a sad day for the world. This is not the America my grandparents sought when they crossed the ocean, fleeing persecution; it is not the America I learned about in school. I hope that the founders' hard fought freedoms will return one day, like the Lorax, but I'm afraid.
Anne W. (Seattle, WA)
I hope for more than "Makes America Great" snake oil. I hope this guy and those like him encounter the greatest possible challenge, shame, and consequences for harmful actions, and like many I'll work to make that happen.
Todd (Wisconsin)
I hope he doesn't do as much damage as I'm afraid he'll do. To America's standing in the world, to the environment, to the civil and workers rights of all Americans. I hope he succeeds in putting middle class workers back to work in good paying jobs and that he improves America's infrastructure. I'm very apprehensive.
Matthew Mansfield (San Francisco)
He'll be as peevish and vindictive as POTUS he was on the campaign trail. Couldn't even make it through his inauguration without insulting or humiliating others. He's the opposite of what we need for someone taking the office of President as the nation stands divided on so many issues and societal problems.
Yosef (Kessler)
I hope Trump will realize that American greatness is not measured by wins and losses but by the values we share and the examples we set.
RABNPA (PA)
My hope is it ends as quickly as possible.
llnyc (NYC)
I hope that all of us who have them get out from behind our devices and cushy desk chairs and comfortable homes and speak up, loud and clear, for our fellow citizens, our dear fellow citizens who became disenfranchised at 11:45 today.
rc (queens)
I hope that he actually cares about the common citizen but I'm doubtful. I hope he doesn't sell us out to the Russians or start a war with China. I hope he doesn't ruin our economy or gut our constitution.
Steve Tittensor (UK)
The inaugural speech was a joke, he has no chance of delivering on all his promises.
Beppe Grillo is a more serious politician than Trump.
I really wish you the best of luck
Patricia (CT)
I hope he keeps his promises to keep social security and Medicare unchanged and that he will provide health care for all.
Braeden Michael Giaconi (Seattle, Washington)
We have now gone deep into the depths of nationalism, deep dark depths.
ted k brown (jacksonville, fl)
My hope is that he have an epiphany, recognize his utter lack of qualifications, experience, realizes the danger to us all, and resigns.
str (Christchurch)
Why do I have the song It's The End Of The World by R.E.M. running through my head now?
Judith Vaughan (Newtown Square, PA)
That it be short.
KV (NJ)
My hope is that he will resign or get impeached.
Margaret (Upstate NY)
My hope for his first 100 days is that he gets impeached after more evidence comes out about his illegal and unpatriotic connections to the Russian government. The other things I hope for about President Trump aren't possible: that he would learn humility, that he would have wisdom, intelligence and a human heart.
Jonathan (Brookline MA)
A speedy impeachment or resignation. We must have competent people occupying major offices. This is not funny. There is no guarantee that our government and continent will stay secure against the threats of the future. Trump will mess things up really good, and then blame it on someone else, or claim it never happened. I just hope that when consequences arrive, I will read about them in the paper, and not learn about them first-hand.
Luke O. (Gloucester, MA)
Trump has shown little interest in learning, personal growth, or exploring the benefits of compassion, so while I pray for a miracle to awaken him to the massive opportunity to use his new power for the greater good, I believe the best investment of time and energy is in organizing ourselves into a formidable, cohesive, and unstoppable force, inspired by one or more leaders who will guide us forward with wisdom, grace, compassion, and a deep, abiding love for the values upon which this country was founded.
Alex (Gainesville)
At the most, I hope Trump isn't as bad as I think he is. At the least, I hope the damage isn't that bad.
Chad Neal (NY, NY)
I hope I'm wrong about what I think will happen and I hope that my fears are not realized. I hope that somehow his presidency actually makes not only America better but the world better as well. It seems extremely unlikely that my hopes will be realized instead of my fears and my powerlessness to drive a better outcome overshadows any ease that a foolish hope can offer.
M Kennedy (UK)
I hope that Congress and Senate have the sense to reign Trump in. I hope that they have the maturity and humilty to admit to their mistake in supporting such a dangerous man and block him at every turn. I think we're in real trouble, but I hope that we're not.
EW (Glen Cove, NY)
I hope someone explain the Smoot-Hawley act to him.
Janet (MA)
My only hope is that the damage-to the environment, to health care, to the economy, to schools and the arts, to America's standing in the world-isn't irreparable. I have never felt such a keen sense of despair for my country.
Karen (Maryland)
And just like that: Tin is Transmuted into Gold
ANetliner Netliner (Washington, DC area)
While I view the incoming administration with considerable trepidation, I will focus on the positive in this post.

I hope that the Trump administration fulfills the promise to secure a good future for forgotten Americans.

I hope that the U.S. begins to buy American and hire American.

I hope that the administration will bring to fruition a $1 trillion infrastructure program to boost the economy and create good American jobs.

Once again, I am proud of the U.S, for achieving a peaceful transition of power.
Clyde (<br/>)
The US has now stepped over a precipice. We are in unchartered waters. Deep, dark, unforgiving waters. This isn't going to end well....
Caffeinated Yogini (Midwest Places)
I've sworn off of all television coverage of this disastrous day. My heart is just too heavy. Let me know when the Women's march begins. I'll gladly watch that.
MEY (Ocean County, NJ)
I will never watch him anywhere under any circumstances. He will never be my president...
kfm (US Virgin Islands)
Watch the March on TV?! There are over 670 marched scheduled worldwide. In every state! Find one near you and go! Only ACTION, full participation- speaking up, writing letters, protest marches, calling your representative and senators- is an adequate response to this!
Olly (Adelaide)
Outside of the USA, we hope for a true leader of the free world, and (whether the New York Times appreciates this or not) Donald Trump's opening words tonight are going to reverberate like thunder across the western world because, outside of the 'establishment', like it or not - he speaks for us all.
Joseph (Ile de France)
He does not speak for me, or you if you are paying attention.
Silke (Munich)
You so do NOT speak for me and many others!
mj (Central TX)
Well, I'm here in Texas (which some might question as a part of the US), and Trump doesn't speak for me.
Andrew (California)
so much for moving beyond nationalism
Martin Traub (Illinois)
A lot of people are happy today, more are afraid, the vast majority is just laughing at him and about us. We unified the world in laughter.
Ellen (Junction city, oregon)
Most of the world is very scared.
Valerie (France)
Scared, but really laughing too. At him. Just imagine for a moment how he can be perceived abroad, out of context. Every time he is on official visit abroad, people will expect to have fun, not feel interest or respect. It is weird and sad.
bob (DC)
I keep trying to tell myself, we survived Nixon, we survived Reagan, and we survived George W. Bush. Trump is bound to be worse by far, especially given a rabid Republican Congress just itching to turn back the clock. Those of us who hold progressive values dear must not only survive but fight for what we believe in. Push back against the greed, corruption, isolationism and bigotry. Focus especially on gaining a Democratic majority in the Senate in 2018.

I hope my country doesn't become an autocracy.

That that smiley smug Ryan is forced out by years end humiliated by trump
pip (langhorne, pa)
When trump bows to pressure from the pentagon to walk back his opinions on NATO, I hope Putin releases the goods he got on trump - and a quick impeachment in total disgrace follows. This sick joke of a presidency cannot be dissolved quick enough for the sake of our country and planet.
Serena (San Francisco)
He does not have an ounce of understanding of what it means and takes to make American great again. I have not an ounce of faith in his leadership to ensure the safety, vitality, or health of our country.
Lorrie (<br/>)
I hope his Russian connections, tax returns, foreign entanglements, and conflicts of interest are fully, irrefutably and quickly revealed and that he is impeached.
Ragnar Midtskogen (New York)
And then we are stuck with Pence? But I guess that would be better :D
Mabb (NJ)
My hope is that this presidency is a blessing in disguise. The blessing is the awakening of the American people to our core values and a willingness to stand up for them. The world is watching. This time in history is not about the man in office, it is about WE THE PEOPLE, and how we react. It's about taking responsibility for our liberties and not just riding out our lucky lives in a daze. Our words and actions will reflect who we truly are as a nation. Our young people are highly enlightened. They will succeed us all. The world is changing. We can resist or adapt.
Rebecca Chandler (Raleigh NC)
Stop campaigning, Trump. You got the job. Instead of being gracious, he's just begun to lead by fear . . . . .
PV (Maryland)
Watching President Trump give his inaugural speech on the rigged system and comparing it with his cabinet appointees, one cannot help but wonder what was he thinking? Does the antithesis of the whole situation not hit him? Add into this equation his personal financial opportunism. The only hope is that the system doesn't crash and the citizenry can somehow tide through this period.
James Panico (Tucson, AZ)
I hope this puerile egomaniac doesn't get us all killed as he drags the US into his twitter universe.

I have my hope restored now. Let's move forward united and together!
Dr. Max Lennertz (Massachusetts)
Those of us in the political center and left cannot unite with this fascist. We're aiming a blowtorch in his direction. We'll be relentless in our scrutiny of his every move.

"Hopes"? Oh, dear me, no, I don't think anyone has anything resembling "hopes" with respect to this debacle.

I hope that there is still an earth left for our children. I hope that we do not accelerate our desecration of this planet over the next four years by denying our impact on it. I hope that our president does not mock and ridicule dangerous leaders (any more than he already has) and that we west-coasters survive the repercussions of his insults. I never imagined – at 25 years old – that I might see nuclear war in my lifetime, or a forced registry of people of a particular faith, or a digression back to overt and violent racism. All I can hope for now, is to be wrong.
JBaltimore (Baltimore, MD)
I'm hoping he builds some nice golf courses, has some classy state dinners, takes many three and four day weekends, and lets the civil servants who run our government do their jobs without interference.
AB (Mt Laurel, NJ)
I hope he quits in few months or 1-2 years to avoid carnage. He is a disgrace to our nation.
Mike (Alaska)
Agreed, but Tea Party Pence is worse.
Beth! (Colorado)
Tax cuts for the wealthy are his first priority. This always results in more debt and borrowing -- and higher interest rates. But the wealthy love that because you can take your tax cut and lend it back to the U.S. Government at a higher interest rate. It's like we've been in rehab for 8 years and now we're going back on the crack cocaine of Republican ripoffs. How long before the crash?

His speech is so anachronistic. If he were making it at the end of the Bush administration, it would make some sense. Now he promises to rebuild America hence topping off a job Obama largely accomplished already. If he would stick to that, it would be great. But he won't.

He opened his speech with thanks to many for bringing him there, including "the people of the WORLD" ?? Was that a reference to Russia?
Catherine (San Rafael,CA)
My hope is that he will last less than a week so clearer heads( not sure where they would come from) would prevail. It's a given that his striking unfitness for this worthy office will sink us. Please God,watch over us.
Sebastian (Brooklyn, NY)
I hope he realizes the real dangers of the conflicts of interests issues that could arise and ultimately divests his interests in the Trump Organization. To not do so is creating a rip in one of our foundational democratic norms and is one of the cracks that have led to the downfall of democracies around the world (especially in South America).
roren53 (Minneapolis)
I hope it doesn't take too long to impeach him.

That after he implements anticompetitive policies to improves the rust belt and mid western economies and they don't work, we can end this ludicrous conversation about going back to a 1950s style industrial state. And once the deficit balloons under his administration, the republicans are never again allowed to pretend they are in favor of austerity.

I hope that the people who supported and voted for Trump, and who are so gleeful about his inauguration, are not the kind of people I am afraid that many are -- anti-female, anti-LGBTQ, anti-immigrant, pro-authoritarian and foolishly nostalgic for a past that cannot be regained.

I want ALL the ethical offenses to be pursued with the determination of the Republicans that have gone after Democrats who have not used intimidation and threats against politicians or citizens of this country. I want everyone who's been harmed by him through his lies and scamming to file suit.
Mark (Aspen, CO)
When you start cheering for Rick Perry, you know things have gotten BAD! Perry is suddenly a voice of reason in this crony-infested joke of a government.

We are all hoping that somehow trump sees reason (or at least someone takes away his access to Twitter). It's clear he doesn't have the demeanor to govern, and certainly doesn't engender the respect of the majority.

The best we hope for is that no one is killed defending his ego and that the damage he and his cronies do is reversible. We also hope that the opposition (as trump characterized them, "enemies") realize they have to provide a platform that proposes improvements in the condition of, as the New Yorker described many trump voters "white working class." These people were duped by a reality TV clown; the question in my mind is will they learn or do they just stand by their man and like him, blame others for his faults, missteps and lies?
Diogenes of NJ (Fairfield, NJ)
I join most of your readers in the hopes of a quick impeachment. His cabinet selections removed any shadow of a doubt that Trump is a greedy narcissistic buffoon totally unqualified to lead this nation. I hope that once his working class followers realize that they were fooled to vote for him they go after him with a vengeance bringing his already low approval numbers to the bottom. As he goes down I hope he brings the party of the plutocrats down with him. Lastly, I hope this experiment in insanity serves to bring to light all of the undemocratic, machiavelian machinations, such as the Electoral College, that enabled his rise to power to the detriment of us all.
jiminy cricket (Right here.)
When George Bush took office, I vowed that I wouldn't listen to one single speech or interview with him. By the end of eight years, I was not only listening, but thinking of him as a sweet idiot that one should show compassion to.

So, during the next four years my hopes are:
1) I hope that I never normalized Donald Trump like I did with George Bush.
2) I hope that I turn off the television or the Internet news site whenever I find him about to speak, or should I occasionally lapse that I not find myself laughing at one of his jokes.
3) I hope that I remember how I found him beyond comprehension and repulsive when I first learned about him and his empire back in the 1980s, and that since then I have only found new reason for these feelings.
4) I hope that I remember that my father, a lifelong Democrat and still voting at 95, brought me up to see nouveau riche people like Donald Trump for what they usually are: full of themselves, brash, and with poor taste in interior decoration and art.
5) I hope that I continue to read the New Yorker and Harpers and The Atlantic and that their writers continue to give me perspective enough to stay sane over the next four years.
6) I hope that should I ever encounter Trump's authoritarian thugs knocking at my door, or out on the street, that I find the courage to stand up to them, even if it kills me.
7) I hope that I'm overthinking with my #6 hope.
8) And finally I hope that I can climb out of the despair I already have fallen into.

While I would like to be hopeful, I find I am mostly fearful for the future, with little faith in our new leader. In his first speech, he still thinks he's campaigning. Be gracious, already.

Rich Kozlow (Arlington, VA)
Two things: 1- he will not do anything exceptionally stupid that will irreversibly damage this country, and 2- this will inspire several talented and level-headed individuals to seek the Presidency in 2020 so we don't have to suffer through this national embarrassment again.

I hope for a personality-altering cerebral embolism that leads to tolerance, compassion, humility and a fighting chance for world peace. It's ok to dream big.
Arguendo NY (NYC)
With great inner conflict, I find myself hoping for political deadlock at home and economic headwinds from abroad.

I fully appreciate the suffering that would result from such economic stagnation, but I fear that much greater suffering could result from a powerful Trump administration and the type of future leaders his success could inspire.

While we still have far to go, we must remember that the relative peace and human dignity of the post-WWII era is an unprecedented blip in the violent history of human societies. It takes careful diplomacy to preserve this delicately balanced international order, and a deep respect for democratic norms to preserve our freedoms and dignity at home; the lives we enjoy are not guaranteed, and nothing frightens me more than a leader who would take risks as though they were.
eldie (Pennsylvania)
Dignity and responsibility. I hope he finds the former and accepts the latter.
Until he does, he has only the legitimacy afforded him by the Electoral College.
Diego (Orlando)
My hope is that the Trump administration reveals the Republican Party for the evil, middle-class-wrecking, regressive force that it is. During the 37 years since Reagan’s first term, the middle class has been decimated to the point where the United States has the largest division of wealth between the rich and poor on earth. In keeping with the regressive, Republican traditions, one of Trump’s first acts will be to further the divide in wealth by giving tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans. It has been proven for decades that tax cuts for the wealthiest do not trickle down to the middle class. Instead, this wealth goes to stock investments, second and third mansions, fancy cars and diamond rings. My hope is that by 2018 all non-millionaire and non-billionaire voters will have come to their senses and stopped voting for Republicans once and for all. Finally, my hope is that the Trump administration leads voters to decimate the Republican Party as a viable political force in our nation for decades to come.
Debra Dacone (Broadview Heights Ohio)
I hope he does not turn his back on the environment at the expense of jobs. I hope he learns to listen to those who know more. I hope the press gives him fair coverage.
Aqua (Bristol UK)
-I hope for the sake of the planet that wiser, more informed heads prevail.

-I hope he doesnot interfere in UK/European politics.

-I hope his ties to Putin are further exposed and acted upon.

- I hope his presidency is short and then he is never heard from again.

- I hope the intelligent media come to their senses, acknowledge their role in all this and rather than begging for bones, rely more on investigative journalism, and less on endlessly contradictory opinion pieces.
And call him out!

-I hope he is investigated properly - finally, tax returns, sexual misconduct, the lot.
-And all his cabinet/family

-I hope all the Troll factories are exposed and silenced as much as possible.

- I hope Zuckerberg deals with Facebooks false news.
-Ditto twitter.

-And after last year I profoundly hope that both Americans and Brits are less credulous and more informed.
Steve DeLapp (<br/>)
Developers always follow a detailed design/construction schedule to get a job done. What is Trump trying to do and what is his schedule?

Will we get serious about global warming?
Will high schools get students good job training or access to further education?
Will Russia and China expand or shrink their territories?
Will the middle 50% of American worker have greater buying power and more financial security?
Will Americans be healthier?
Will the government increase subsidies to provide health care to citizens who now average $10,000 per person per year in costs?
Will the illegal workers at Carl's Jr and Hardy's and pork processing plants and poultry farms and vineyards all over California be sent "home" and replaced with higher paid American citizens?
Will roads and bridges be safer and less congested?
Will crime be down?
Will more working age Americans be gainfully employed?
Will the number of unwanted babies be reduced?
How many Americans will be "happier" with their lives?
Brenda Rezk (Champaign, IL)
My best hope for Trump's presidency is that he doesn't initiate or instigate WWIII. I also hope Congress does its duty and impeaches him when his erratic behavior and numerous conflicts of interest make it the best course of action.

I hope for:

--nationwide right-to-work
--mandatory e-Verify
--voter ID

I also hope liberals continue with their "dark forces are gathering, lo, Nazism is here, we must resist." They didn't care when Obama destroyed this country -- suddenly they think they have populist support.
RKlose (Orono, ME)
I just looked out the window and the country is still here. Obama didn't destroy it.
Andrew (NYC)
Obama destroyed the country?
Deficit halved.
Unemployment halved.
DOW up 180%.
Crime down.
Prisoner count down.
Gas prices down.
No new wars.
Graduation rates up.
A record number of months with job gains.
newyorkerva (sterling)
Please explain how obama destroyed this country.
We ahve the largest economy and lowest unemployment rate in the decelopwd world. Most powerful military and nearly the best educated.

What is so wrong? Help me understand.
Bart (San Diego)
An immediate impeachment because the individual offends every sense of decency my parents taught me. He has the maturity of a 10 year old and has too many r.e. deals with personal entanglements that violate the Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution.
Barret (Tennessee)
I hope other countries don't suffer the consequences of the Trump administration's actions. And I hope in two years time Americans can vote again to get proper people into Congress. An impeachment in two years wouldn't be bad either.
A Real American (Denver, Colorado)
That it ends within the first 100 days.
Bill Noren (Pacifica CA)
I keeping waiting for Donald to prove me wrong. But nearly everything he has done since election day has continued to prove his incompetence and corupution. He has squandered any post election good will he might have built. Does anyone still belive his next four years will be any better.
Kellyanne (Boston, MA)
I hope he realizes that he is a president for all Americans and has an obligation to the entire international community. This must be done personally, rhetorically (speeches, comments, twitter), legally, and structurally. I hope that he takes active steps to address racism and the systemic mistreatment of racial minorities (incl. addressing his openly white supremacist followers), apologizes for and never again repeats his own extremely misogynistic behavior, advocates for women and gender minorities, openly and productively advocates for LGBT people, openly acknowledges and respects immigrants (no mater how they got here) and works for an easier immigration process, recognizes and commends DREAMers, accepts more refugees and works to end genocides/human rights violations, brings both Palestinian and Israeli parties to the peace table and respects both sides, advocates for disabled accommodation and respect, recognizes religious persecution and seeks to combat it, and fights economic inequality- including acknowledging his wealth privileges and taxing the wealthiest Americans and regulating businesses. Recognize climate change and work actively to combat it. In essence- work for the rights and dignity of all people- to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Basically, I'm only in my 20s so please don't ruin my life and the lives of all young Americans- a majority of whom did not choose you or your agenda for our future.
Also, yes, my name is actually Kellyanne.
Steve (NYC)
I have no hope. I think Dangerous Donald will destroy our country by wrecking our economy and leading us into a war because of his ego and impulsiveness. I envision four years of disgust and horror.
Lisa (NYC)
A great opening (by whomever that gentleman was) for the swearing-in. He alluded to our nation's various earlier presidencies, and where each handover had been preceded by lots of turmoil within the country and among its voters. Whether we like Trump or not, or the fact that half the nation voted for him, we should all feel 'proud' as Americans, that certain protocols continue to be followed at the national governmental level, as is being done today.

I'd like to see all these 'protestors' take their energies to see if and how we can prevent such a person as Trump from even being allowed to run...to even get on the ballot in the first place. But once he's been voted in by half our fellow citizens, to then protest 'him' is moot. I will be prepared to protest when I feel motivated to do so, and that will only be for any actions or proposals he puts forth, that I may vehemently oppose. But to protest now? (I find crowd psychology fascinating, esp in this day and age of social media...)
Mike (Maine)
fwiw, only one quarter of the nation voted for him, half the people who were eligible to vote didn't vote, which means only 25% of the people elected him.
DT, of course, thinks of it as a landslide victory.

Next time around use you "protest energy" to get more people to the voting booth.
Marc Turcotte (Keller, TX)
I hope he quickly gets impeached.
V (CA)
Hoping for impeachment but afraid that is unlikely. I am afraid for the well-being of our country and the world.
Michael Farmer (Athens, Ohio)
I did not vote for Mr. Trump (or Ms. Clinton), and events since the election have not been encouraging, but for all of our sake's I hope his presidency is much more successful than any of us can imagine. I hope that in 4 years all sides of the political spectrum will be able to talk to each other with respect and humility, and work together for the common good of all.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
A Trump victory in Ohio certainly makes this kind of hoping less likely. At some point our actions have to uphold some kind of reality for citizens.
Sarah (Toronto)
I hope that we have all been duped and Trump shocks everyone with liberal, open minded views and mandates.
Other than that, I just hope everyone survives the duration of his presidency - though I don't expect it to last four years, I do expect tumult.
kk (Seattle)
My hopes are that the Republicans get everything they want. They eliminate about two-thirds of the federal government and abolish all taxation of unearned income. And then, after a brief and total crash that devastates working class white Americans, the nation comes to its senses as it did under FDR. Really, at this point we are like a terrible drunk who won't get treatment until we lose our job, our spouse, our kids, our home, our driver's license and our teeth after picking and losing a bar fight.
Joseph DiBenedetto (Westchester NY)
Hope, hmmm.
I am not sure it is possible to hope without fear.
The new president's first acts seem to signal what is to come. By removing both the global warming and LGBT government web sites, this "administration" has begun the putsch. Deny science and minimize minorities. Next repeal universal health care and the change the tax code.
A collapse of the monetary system is possible and the poorest and oldest will be hurt most.
With the Supreme Court appointment coming, might we expect Obergefell, then Roe then Loving then Brown all to be reversed? We might.
Then maybe the 13th and 14th amendments to be modified or repealed and not replaced.
Hope not so much.
Sanity not so much.
Fear much.
And no savior exists to stop the most unqualified, unprepared president in US history.
JDB
mj (Central TX)
I hope moderate and progressive voters will come to realize that voting for hopeless third-party candidates or holding out for the perfect choice -- rather than supporting the better one -- can have disastrous consequences. Voting can and should be an exercise in idealism, but at some point practical strategic realities have to be taken into account.

Meanwhile, hope that God actually does watch out for lost dogs, wayward children, and the United States of America...
Brad (Chester, NJ)
I hope that in one year's time, we are all still alive and not facing nuclear winter.

Short of that I pray for all my brothers and sisters who may be affected by his policies.
N B (Texas)
Survive it without being wiped out financially and having to live under an overpass.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
I'm just hoping to live through his administration and to see reason restored to our nation fours year from now.
Johanna Clearfield (Brooklyn)
This country is on the brink of environmental ruin -- just google recent updates on the massive water toxicity caused by new vigorous fracking exploits - especially the XL pipeline - already poised to destroy the main water source in North Dakota for millions living there - including the Native tribes who have been putting their lives on the line to protect their water. We do not have four years with massive toxic oil and fracking exploits ready to explode our country -- Oklahoma already shaken by record earthquakes directly the impact of massive fracking. We do not have four years. Trump will de regulate all of the protections that are already tenous for our environment including destroy the endangered species act. Trump will privatize our national treasures - our public parks including Grand Canyon / Yellowtone - and more and more. WE DO NOT HAVE FOUR YEARS. @JOHANNACLEAR
stu freeman (brooklyn)
@Johanna- I hear you but does he? Perhaps coming down from his perch atop Trump Tower and being closer to terra firma at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue will bring him a new perspective. And yet somehow I doubt it.
Kay Johnson (Colorado)
Trump says he wants to run America like a business. We don't know how that would look because the guy hides his taxes. And some of his businesses went bankrupt. His instincts are predatory not protective. So I would not bet the farm on this guy. Think Jimmy Swaggart.
Gráinne (Virginia)
Remember only the House of Representatives has the power to levy taxes. Remind them of that if Trump threatens to tax anything. Congress does not relinquish its rights willingly.
Jorge D. Fraga (New York, NY)
I hope that the damage that he is going to do to our country won't be lasting, but it will depend how long he stays in power before he is impeached or bring the world to a nuclear holocaust.
Jamie (Rochester, NY)
That it is short, and that the damage is reversible.
LeftCoastBoomer (Silicon Valley)
I hope he resigns or is impeached within the first months. He is not qualified, by any measure. And he is incurious, so will not even try to learn how to govern and be an international leader.
Howard S (Hudson, NY)
I will differentiate between hopes and expectations. I hope he will very quickly understand that who he is, what he doesn't know, can't begin to comprehend, will send this country into an incredible tailspin that will take more intellect, compassion and humility than he currently possesses. The ramifications are broader and far more dangerous than he is capapable or willing to examine. He has shown his intentions. After running a faux populist campaign, he is surrounding himself with exactly the people his base disdained; super wealthy white men who haven't the slightest interest in the hopes and dreams of the 90%. I say 90% because there are many, many dreamers and speculators who see themselves piggybacking onto his ridiculous plans, whatever he says they are. People he has chosen to back/front him by all standards other than his own have no business whatsoever crafting or helping to craft the more than complicated issues this country's decisions will foment. Apparently my hopes and expectations have merged. I have almost no hopes and nothing but the direst of expectations.
Citizen ('merica)
I've never been more fearful of nuclear war than I am now.

I know I can't do anything about that though so I choose to live in the moment.
Barbara M. (NJ)
I am hoping that you, President Trump, will be humble enough to take advice from those with more experience in government than you do. Humble enough to realize the job you've been elected to do is the most important in the world. Humble enough to know that you are now president of ALL the people--every color, creed and party affiliation. Humble enough to ask your Higher Power for help. As I am humble enough to call you President despite the fact that you did not get my vote.
LA (San Diego, CA)
I hope he doesn't start a nuclear war. I hope one day he decides to come clean about his lies and deceit in the face of overwhelming evidence that he was propped up and placed where he is today by the Russians. I also hope in a moment of clarity he decides to release his "full-form" tax return documents. I also hope he doesn't get re-elected in four years which is about all I can wait to never his orange face anymore.
Ginny (Camano Island WA)
We hope that the billionaires in Trump's cabinet consider donating funds to the social programs they say they will cut. Especially to keep the pre-existing conditions portion of ACA. Our daughter would be dead without her insurance in Maryland.
yukonriver123 (florida)
You are right.
cameronj666 (nyc)
I hope he’s impeached within the first 100 days.
Grammar Man (Jacksonville, FL)
I have no hope for anything other than disaster. I am wearing a black suit today to mourn the death of a country I thought I knew. Nixon's Southern Strategy of appealing to racism has extended to depths I did not think were possible. My hope is that we can survive four years being led by someone whom David Duke believes is just fine and dandy. If I ever supported a candidate who appealed to a "proud racist" I would have to question why I supported the candidate. We have the second longest economic recovery in the nation's history and a long bull market. Let's see what it is in four years with tens of millions of people no longer having access to health care and no one in Washington caring one bit. How many young people in our military will die overseas in needless conflicts that satisfy some sick need of our Narcissist In Chief? It is so sad. We are Rome.
charlie kendall (Maine)
Release the Tax Returns. 60+% favor release. Of course he won't believe any poll he disagrees with. 'There is none so blind as he who will not see.'
