Trump, on YouTube, Pledges to Create Jobs

I realize the folks who fashioned the constitution did the deed just a wee ahead of the silicon valley/social media explosion but do you think that the President should be using You tube to announce "policy plans?" Seems like he is consciously side-stepping scrutiny that would accompany reporters covering this announcement, you know, at a press, you know, conference? The ultimate narcissistic tool -- they call it a "product dump" -- a one way communication. Making policy plans in front of reporters not only brings fresh air into the room but connects us (Plurubus-es) to our President and seems to be a vital component for a, er, democracy. Something about the YouTube announcement echos an old Star Trek (TV/not movie) episode where the leader was propped up in front of the camera (although he was dead). A talking head having a one way conversation with no one. #STOPTRUMP @johannaclear

How do politicians create jobs?
alan Brown (new york, NY)
Maybe you won't have to ask that question next year sometime.
Dana Johnson (Oklahoma,OK)
Adjustments are a sign of clearing the air and moderating the excess- and fine travel pattern and diplomatic. This will give opportunity for confidence extensions. Perhaps the U.S. will be better for this path.
Workers to work, in the U.S. and abroad.

Life is brimming with irony.

Trump is coming in as one of the most reviled elected Presidents but may end up being one of the most constructive.

Then again, the bar is set pretty low following 16 years of Republicrat waste, endless war, and domestic indifference.
Raul Hernandez (Santa Barbara)
Trump is a operating like a smooth Third World dictator who will use America as his personal ATM machine.
He is dangling trinkets in front of people like "many millions of jobs" promises to lull people and the media into believing that he will deliver.
Meanwhile, he will enrich himself through quid-pro-quo shady business deals he will make with world leaders including Russia while in the White House.
The New York Times and Washington Post investigative reporters should get every piece of paper this guy signs or has his prints on it.
Ed Jones (Detroit)
Finally someone to make the trains run on time. Hmm? Wasn't that Mussolini's claim to fame? As Oscar Wilde said, "Life imitating art." Only in this case the United States (and presumably the world) will now mimic reality TV. Let the love fest begin! Sorry to be a wet blanket but that's only going to work until the markets crash. Time to cash out, head for the hills, and hunker down guys.
Dan (MA)
About a week before the election, the Mass Pike did away with toll booths - and toll takers - as they kow use electronic sensors to collect tolls As far as I know, none of those toll taking jobs went to China.
Rangerdoggy (MPLS MN)
In Addition - I would like to see Contract Agencies regulated so that foreign competition to the LEGAL American worker cannot happen unless there is less than 1% unemployment. Not only have contract agencies been replacing hired workers, and have systematically gotten rid of Information Technology staff as regular employees. They have done the same in many areas. Many times it is cheap labor being brought in on visas to replace American workers.
In Addition - Contract Agencies should be held to a standard to have affordable health care that actually covers something. The deductibles need to be competitive to the hired positions in the job market. The contract agencies must be able to give workers paid time off.
Hemingway (Florida)
I'm so excited for our country and I know many other Americans feel the same way despite what you read here.
Shizue Hicks (San Rafael, California)
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a native San Franciscan who lives just north now in Marin County -- Bluer than Blue territory. Sorry to say I defected to the Dark Side because of Hillary Clinton. I'm a 63-year old woman who was not about to vote for Hillary because she is a Democrat and a female. In my book, she was all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons.

Donald Trump, just as you, Hemingway, point out, makes me excited and, I might add, optimistic. No more PC thuggery and snide put-downs. Let's "drain the swamp" and get people working again.

Thank you, Donald Trump, for having a solid game plan and winning!
DR (New England)
Shizue Hicks - Can you please provide the details of Trump's "solid plan" he hasn't bothered to do so yet.

I hope that you are independently wealthy and won't ever need social security benefits.
CJ (New York)
Buckle up..............one of his supporters is going to get
specific about his plans...................the silence is deafening

BTW.....the swamp is clearly comprised of people YOU voted for.....
So how does that work?
david x (new haven ct)
The dictator's way of reaching his people. When will will have Trump posters on our buildings, statues in our public places, 8-hour speeches on public television?

This is exactly what dictators do.
hypocrisy (Los Angeles)
CLEAN COAL. Tooth fairies, Santa Claus, and the magic man in the sky! When we become a third rate power and China is the leader of the world economically we can all look back at this time and not be surprised how this turned out. Please let me be wrong but this is so apparent to anyone who uses logic and reason as opposed to rhetoric and emotion . China will be the green energy leader and will take over trade in the pacific the end.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles CA)
Using YouTube instead of a press conference to announce his policy plans means not having to respond to any questions. The listeners will understand as much as they already understand and must take the rest of what he says however that they feel inclined. Perfect for a guy who wants to appear decisive and in control.

His drop two regulations for every new one is remarkably revealing. Now Trump as an owner of hotels and convention spaces knows that it is not the case that every regulation is the same as every other regulation. Let's say that you have a limit on the number of guests who may use a particular conference or meeting room and sprinkler systems on the guest room floors. Should a new law that requires exit signs for all hallways and meeting rooms not be implemented until the limits upon guests in meeting rooms and sprinklers be eliminated? Of course not, it's a stupid idea.

How about restoring steel manufacturing and automobile manufacturing by eliminating the amount of these products imported from foreign facilities? Any idea why the old open hearth furnace integrated mills were never replaced by BOP integrated mills like those which made the former obsolete? Too many years to pay off the capital expense. Foreign automobiles replaced American ones because they were more efficient and made with tighter tolerances and the cost of matching them meant the same, too many years to pay off the capital expense. Trump does not explain how he can do these things.
Bruce Meyers (Illinois)
This is brilliant, giving policy speeches on YOUTUBE. This eliminates those nagging questions report tend to ask, especially the kinds of questions DT doesn't want to answer. Does this mean we all have to sign up for the President Trump channel? What about the citizens that don't use the internet but might get their news from TV or newspapers?
Mojo (Florida)
It is brilliant - but not for the reasons you suggest. It announces to the MSM that their actions the last 18 months disqualifies them from being condsidered
legitimate....and that the lesson is not over yet. 2018 is closer than we think.
Jim Manis (Pennsylvania)
The similarities with Germany, Italy, and Japan in the 1920s and 30s is astounding. It is as if Trump read Orwell's "1984" and said, "I will be Big Brother."
Kjensen (Burley Idaho)
To me, this is like watching a slow moving train wreck. As Bill Maher stated before the election, it's a right-wing coup. I received one of my BAs in history, with an emphasis on Latin America. Since I read, write and speak fluent Spanish, I read Gabrielle Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa along with other Latin American writers. These authors literally can draw upon centuries of experience with right and left wing tyranny. One thing that is consistent with individuals such as Trump, as other dictators, is their desire to control the media which includes artists, writers, and musicians. Their entire focus is to control the message and destroy any criticism or contrary analysis. We should not be fooled into believing that this is just a creative way of reaching an audience, just like a teenager creating videos for general amusement. YouTube, Twitter, and other and regulated aspects of the Internet provide authoritarians the criticism free stage they so desire. Additionally, dictators heap abuse on traditional media until its irrelevant. Our traditional media needs to learn to respond to this or freedom of the press will be dead.
Patsy (Arizona)
There is always hope we will find out Donald's real beliefs, if he has any. There is always hope that he won't enact any of the crazy ideas from the campaign. I always wondered if he was still a social issues liberal, believing in choice for women. After all, he lives in NYC, the most diverse socially liberal city in the country. He has had gay friends. Mike Pence, the evangelical, scares me even more than Donald. Anyone who thinks a girl should be forced to have her father's baby is not fit to run the country. Anyone who believes the government has the right to control a woman's body is not following the constitution, equality for all.

So here is hoping Donald is a secret liberal who truly does want to bring back the good paying manufacturing jobs desperately needed to sustain a healthy, robust economy for all. Here's hoping.......
N. Smith (New York City)
First. I totally agree with you about Mike Pence! -- he's like the scary cousin of Ted Cruz.
But I'm afraid you've already seen what there is to see about Donald Trump--there will be no magic transformation into something else.
He is a self-absorbed, thin-skinned bigot -- something most New Yorkers know about already.
The rest of America will find out sooner or later.
There's nothing to hope for.
Eric Sargent (Detroit)
He looks old(er) and more fatigued in this video...the stress of the job is probably getting to him. =:-)
mt (Riverside CA)
Ari Fleischer states that what dt is doing using social media, is the same as what Obama did, as if the two were the same. What he fails to mention is that Obama also had press conferences as well as engaging on social media. And the article fails to note this difference.
N. Smith (New York City)
And Obama actually had something to say other than "LOCK HER UP!".
rlpace (oregon)
Don't watch his hands, watch his brain.
Do not pay any attention to what he says, watch what he does.
Steve (Everett, WA)
This is pretty consistent with his campaign message that the media is corrupt and untrustworthy. It's also consistent with his businessman mentality. The description in the article of his speech as an "informercial" is apt. He is is a salesman and he is selling his brand.

But there was, is and always will be a media (medium, to be correct). By posting on YouTube, he avoided being held accountable this time, and while YouTube is young now, it is still maturing. As the new media grow up and become the news media, they must become more responsible. Anyone can post videos on YouTube, including journalists. YouTube should allow credentialed journalists to override the setting that disables comments and it should autoplay follow-up videos. YouTube needs a verification process, like so many other websites, including this NYT site, and it should clearly show who is who. Facebook already has categories for personal accounts and business accounts. They now need accounts for politics. No elected official should be able to avoid questioning and accountability.
Marc H (Castro Valley, CA)
With all the promises that Trump made during his campaign, job creation is going to be the measure by which he is ultimately judged. The lack of good quality jobs is what got him elected, and the people will be willing to overlook every other broken promise if he delivers on jobs. When is he going to put 2 + 2 together and tie corporate tax reform to job creation
Mike (NYC)
How cone the medium has become the story instead of the content of his message?

As far as TPP goes isn't he saying exactly what Bernie said?
Alan Faber (Boston, MA)
"the medium is the message" Marshall McLuhan
Juliette MacMullen (Pomona, CA)
The success of Trump Presidency will rely on how quickly he learns what's at stake, let's hope he picks up fast. It is disheartening that he wants to restore jobs and wealth rather than Social Justice and Humanity. But that apparently is ambition from past decades. As we approach Thanksgiving we can all be thankful for FDR, JFK and MLK for we know that the Best Does Exist.
Leslee Brooks (Wellesley, MA)
Those factory jobs are never coming back to this country because today's factory workers need new technological skills; to acquire these talents workers need years of retraining. Trump states."...to bring back our jobs, it's about time." This is more of his newspeak as unemployment is now at 4.9%, cut in half from the mess Bush and his republican administration left us mired in. As for the TPP,
workers here earn 18% more in export heavy manufacturing, and the TPP will reduce tariffs making goods from the USA less expensive. It's not just about business, the TPP would curb China's power as well. Without the TPP, China will have an enormous advantage in Asia. Maybe it wasn't Russia who was helping elect Trump.
Amanda123 (Brooklyn, NY)
YouTube and Twitter are new, but the concept of speaking "directly to the people" while bypassing the press isn't. Communist and other authoritarian governments have operated like this for over a century. They would give long speeches over public radio an on TV, proclaiming "glories" of the government while belittling their enemies. They would never hold press conferences or talk to the press (if the press was allowed to exist in those countries).

The technology is new, but nothing else about this scenario is.
Kvetch (Maine)
He's got the Central Asian, cult-of-personality oligarch look nailed.
Toni Lewis (California)
Great use of social media to put forth his message without the skewing and editing of the liberal press. In my view, the mainstream media have failed the general public miserably. They have not reported on him fairly to date, and I'm glad to see Mr. Trump using creative means to get his message out.

Inspiring talk, President-elect Trump! We are looking forward to your following through on what you have said you will do.
N. Smith (New York City)
It's not the media that's unfair when reporting what what Trump says -- It's what he says that's unfair.
There's a difference.
curtis (Texas)
This is so exciting! Along with his slogan Make Amerca Great Again I'd like to add another Make America First Again! :)
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Keep in mind that he has no idea how to greaten America, and that America has been first since WWII without his help. At some point you'll probably realize how much he's been lying to you and how clueless he is. Make sure to feel deeply betrayed.
Brian Sussman (New Rochelle, NY)
And let's not forget his other intentions to make America racist again, and make America stupid again, and create a Great Depression again, and make America hated again, and make America hate itself again.
Varghjarta Wolfborn (Florida)
If you don't think America is the most hated it's ever been for the last 16 years, you've been living under a rock
David (Minnesota)
The US opting out of the TPP comes with a major consequence - an opening for China. How's our new king going to deal with that? His world view is scarily narrow. I guess that comes with being a narcissist.
Truth777 (./)
TPP is a terrible piece of corporate written law. Free trade does not work unless all participating countries have equal existing pay structures.
N. Smith (New York City)
Considering the breadth of this pending agreement and all the different countries involved, "equal existing pay structures" would hardly be feasible, nor is it a requirement

Millions of jobs by deregulating coal and fracking??
Proof, please.

Of course, if one goes to Youtube to view this video, comments are disabled.

Social media such as Facebook, Insta(anything), Youtube, etc. are designed to be interactive. President-Elect Trump and his team are stopping that whole side of communication.

Perhaps by May 2017 there will be positive results for the American people to judge the results of this election. Until then, it is all just talk.
CJ (New York)
America....don't watch these utube messages...................
Boycott....................he'll miss his 'yuge' following and be forced to go
back to venues that can answer back.

He's so predictable....

Let's remember here who is David and who are the Goliaths. "David" would probably NOT be the five multinational media corporations that control over 90% of our access to outside information that are defenders and essential elements of the corporate and political establishment transcending both political parties and our nation's border. Sure, a concise description of all this may sound a tad maniacal, but no conspiracies are implied here. This situation is probably the result of just unfettered capitalism and technology.
So compared to these Goliaths, even Donald Trump seems David-like.
L Peterson (Wisconsin)
The title of the Trump video story should have read something like the following:
Trump avoids media; publishes on You Tube
The Times would never simply publish a news release by a politician, why post a video? While the story that accompanied the video was a well-written interpretive piece describing Trump's video use/media avoidance and reporting some of his campaign promises and actions as president-elect, it wasn't necessary to post the video. Communications from politicians in or out of office are always skewed and therefore are propaganda, Trump's more so than some.
NY Times: we need a free press. Please keep up the good work--expose Trump's lies, let the people know what is really going on. The trouble, of course, is that Trump supporters won't believe you but will prefer to believe BreitBart or Fox, which have no journalistic standards. What to do? It's a conundrum. I hope you're up to the task.
MarkAntney (Here)
If you're this afraid of the media,..no doubt the incoming White House Plumbers will have vast experience,..it just won't be in plumbing.
craig (PA)
It's nice that he claims that he will create jobs, but NOTHING he has proposed to do would actually do so. The most likely outcome from the policies that he has already proposed, such as tax cuts primarily for the wealthy, ending trade deals, end environmental destruction, would be a massive job losses, turning around the continued job growth that we have seen over the past 6 years. If I'm wrong I will be the first to admit it, but the economics behind his proposals are clear. They are the same sorts of things that helped create the great depression in the 30s.
Activist Bill (Mount Vernon, NY)
Trump will create jobs just like Obama created jobs - ZERO! ZILCH! NOTHING! Unless he's talking about creating jobs in China and India, and other countries where the workers are paid the equivalent of pennies per day. That's what Obama did.
MarkAntney (Here)
So the improved Employment Rate was by Happenstance,...hey, or inspite of the POTUS?
Wolfgang Staribacher (Vienna, Austria)
Unfair, Bill. Obama saved the US car industry and got out of the finance crisis a lot better than most European countries, in terms of growth and employment.
Diane Martin (San Diego)
The "everyone" Trump refers to most certainly includes him and his well-connected friends first and foremost.
chuck (austin)
Your president thinks he is going to get so much done. The American public has been bamboozled, hood winked, conned, taken for a ride. There are some things he will be able to do, but so much is going to take way more time than he thinks. He is delusional, he will not be able to fast track most things. There will be checks and balances. He will get toasted by the media again and again and he will cry about it again and again. This is going to be part of the worst 4 years in American history and he will show his true colors. Good luck to America over the next 4 years, we are going to need it.
Barry Williams (NY)
The Republican Congress will rubber stamp most of his agenda if he rubber stamps enough of theirs. We will find out why it's not necessarily a good thing to have one party control the executive and legislative branches of government, with dibs on shading the judicial with conservative bias - maybe 2-3 justices to boot. How about controlling what laws are enacted, how they are administered, and the results when those are challenged in court?

Scary stuff.
Tom Mariner (Bayport, New York)
What the YouTube video says is "mainstream media, unless you report fairly, we don't need you."

Every Tweet Trump made would have been an original news story, grabbing eyeballs. But during the campaign, the media made it clear it would use any means fair and foul to stop his election. They failed.

Worse, they have made it crystal clear with the concerted attacks on his single announced cabinet appointment that they will continue to attack Trump once he is sworn in.

The media and the Administration have mobilized their storm troopers in the streets, so Trump's threat is "Play fair or you're out". The Constitution says the government will not attack the press, but it does not guarantee access
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
On the contrary, what this Youtube propaganda piece says is, we're afraid of taking questions or providing any details about these impossible promises, so we're just going to say them and not allow any follow-up. At some point you'll realize how much he's been lying to you. Hopefully.
jsanders71 (NC)
There is quite a difference between "attacking" someone and "questioning" them. Are you suggesting that we the people should be wholeheartedly satisfied to receive self-serving "news" directly from Mr. Trump, without question or further analysis? That seems to me to be a recipe for ultimate disaster. Why do you think the founding fathers thought a free press was important enough to include protections for it in the Bill of Rights?
Keith (CA)
It still remains the job of legitimate news outlets, such as the NYTimes, to scrutinize and report on when somebody is lying via YouTube or any other social media outlet. Trump has made P.T.Barnum proud by proving a person can lie their way into the presidency, however candidates only have to state their lies, not make them work while they are candidates. Now is the time for real journalism to maintain a record of all the lies Trump told during his candidacy and to hold him accountable for those lies. Particularly as Trump begins his transition into lying about whether he was lying during the campaign.
Arcadia University/Freelance Writer (Comments)
Watching Mr. Trump give that surreal first speech was like taking a bullet. Obama put plans in place to lead the world in college graduates by 2020 and Trump wants to replace that with manufacturing and coal jobs? For every hardworking college-educated professional or blue collar Democrat with an ounce of common sense this new reality is a slap in the face. For young people and especially young women the Trump presidency is beyond defeating. I have worked too hard for too long to graduate under a backwards Trump economy. Apparently to be the leader of a nation all one needs is a reality TV show, a small million dollar loan, a criminal background, and a chip on your shoulder that is bigger than the ice breaking off in the Arctic.
Daedalus (Rochester, NY)
"Writers are harmless, like dead yeast in beer" - Robert Heinlein.

Oh dear, your fantasy of a country full of people like you is going up in smoke.
GLC (USA)
Taken a lot of bullets, have you?
Arcadia University/Freelance Writer (Comments)
Daedalus, yes I suppose my fantasy of "people like me" is going up in smoke: people who care about higher education reform so more have access to a quality affordable education rather than a Trump University scam, or people who care about the environment and want to see it respected rather than used carelessly for jobs today with little thought for the dire consequences of tomorrow, or people who care about decency and respect over hate and anger...yes it's all going up in smoke. The fantasy that others would care about Syrian refugees and find it disturbing how close Trump aligns himself with Russia, the fantasy that others would care about Trump's shady conflicts of interest, or tax cuts for the rich which always means gutting social services....yeah I guess I was wrong to fantasize that people would ever care about anything bigger than themselves and their $100 or so tax cut.
N. Smith (New York City)
So this makes everything alright, does it? An infomercial, instead of a tweet.
And what difference does it make if he doesn't even bother to address the topics that concerns Americans most?
Somebody in his camp had better tell him the clock is ticking when it comes to producing some good-paying jobs for all those angry folks who voted him into office.
Activist Bill (Mount Vernon, NY)
N. Smith - If Hillary Clinton were elected President and made the exact same YouTube video as did Trump, you'd be praising her. And worse - you'd believe her.
David (Minnesota)
These "angry folks" don't understand that the marketplace is the primary creator of jobs - supply and demand. For folks that less government, they sure hold out their hands a lot.
N. Smith (New York City)
@Bill
First. Unless you are clairvoyant--which I doubt-- you have no idea what I believe.
But just for the record. I believe nothing that comes out of this man's mouth, because he constantly changes his mind within the space of a tweet.
dre (NYC)
Why didn't he just promise world peace, prosperity for all and lower taxes to boot. Only a fool who believes in a magic wand and who has no understanding of the complexities of life and the world we actually live in would gave any credence to this pea brain.

Yes, he's going to magically create "millions of jobs", or bring them back, especially the kind that pollute and degrade the environment, or that robots, automation, computers, AI and other forms of technology or software have largely eliminated forever.

Some will hopefully come back, but unless you are highly skilled and educated, most of those currently out of work won't qualify.

And he'll fight corruption. Right. He's the embodiment of it. His whole life is based on deceit and fraud.

And his natural tendencies are those of a narcissistic dictator, as is evidenced in part by his bypassing the press (which he wants to control) and using youtube.

Vigilant people who care have to hope there are enough elected officials with a little integrity still out there that will impeach him when he inevitably crosses the line.

It will happen because he reveals his real nature constantly. A thin-skinned ignorant con man with no integrity, who cares only about himself and his ego. Of course he tells the suckers the story they want to hear. Stay vigilant America or we'll all go down in flames.
Richard (Arsita, Italy)
I would be willing to bet that, four years from now, assuming he is still in office, the press will be railing that "It has been 1,460 days without a presidential press conference." He is terrified of being asked an unscripted question, much less a follow-up.
Momo (Berkeley, CA)
It would be really great if Trump could make our infrastructures safe, clear out the lobbyists, and provide jobs for everyone. But didn't the Republicans try deregulation before and it didn't go so well? And has he forgotten the First Amendment? Has he dementedly forgotten about not touching Social Security and Medicare?
Title Holder (Fl)
Imagine for a minute Mr Trump holding a Press conference today. It will be a complete disaster. Mr Trump should only hold a press conference after months of training and preparation. The Man has no idea what he is talking about and as a president elect, his words matter.
Let him talk through Youtube or Twitter. America doesn't need more embarrassment.
RosieNYC (NYC)
Seriously, Mr. President-Elect? You Tube? How old are you, 13? It has not hit you yet what the job you applied for is all about, has it? The Presidency of the United States is not a "family" business or a scripted reality show. This is a job where your competency, skills and ability to perform the job will be scrutinized by the American people and by the REST OF THE WORLD. Picking petty fights, complaining about coverage of your actions, throwing twitter tantrums, not to mention the racist, xenophobic, misogynistic and hateful message you championed and now have confirmed you hold based on the people you are choosing to join and based on your lack of action to confront what your actions and rhetoric have awaken in some of the members of this country, are so far not speaking very well about your readiness for this job sadly a lot of voters thought you had. History will not be kind.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Don't forget, the real Republican objective is to largely discredit and eliminate federal supervision of states.
Manuela (Mexico)
Why does all this have the ring of 1984? The thing I believe we now need to guard against is our Internet freedom. Very soon, the president elect will start noticing that "nasty" things are being said about him on the Internet.

It is obvious that this man wants to control the media and everything the public thinks about him. If there were a way to look into your living room, he certainly would. Let's make sure, as much as we can given Snowden's revelations, that Big Brother is not watching our every move, because once he can, you can rest assured - as he has proven time and time again - he will take reprisals.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
Now that Trump has decided not to go after Hillary he can concentrate on the important stuff, like going after the cast of Hamilton for disrespecting his VP.
R. Springs (Colorado Springs)
It always takes awhile for people to get comfortable with new technology. Twitter or a service like it are the future. It's pretty amazing that it took a 70 year old to show us that. The media is used to getting the president in that little room where they can all shout their questions "Mr. President! Mr. President!" and then they can release the information to the people. With Twitter, he cuts out the middle man and the media doesn't like it and will have to get used to it and adapt.

Great and a very important speech by the new Prez. I am a happy man in Malaysia because of what he said, "...withdraw the TPPA on his first day in office." Trump! Trump! Trump!

Hmm, I guess the Coal can be clean if you don't Mine it or burn it?

But he doesn't give a Frack, so say it, so shall it be done.
bklyncowgirl (New Jersey)
Interesting, he's bringing on the popular stuff first.

Except for removing restrictions on energy production, something I strongly oppose, there was nothing that this left wing liberal who voted for Sanders in the primary and Clinton in the general election could disagree with. Ditch the TPP, good. Work to bring manufacturing--and the jobs that go with it home. Yes. Go after visa violaters--er does that mean workers or employers? If it's employers, especially when it comes to the H1B visa, I'm all for it. It was all really quite vague and I'm sure that was the point.

Don't get me wrong, I am not happy with the results of this election but by the rules which exist today, he won. Unless Democrats want to be branded the party which opposes the interests of people who work for a living, they should be open, as Sanders, Warren and Schumer have said to working with Trump on issues that will help the middle class. but to oppose Trump on civil rights, environmental and social issues and stand absolutely united against any hint that the GOP will meddle with Social Security and Medicare.

In short do not be like the Republicans.

Seems we just (YouTubed) witnessed Phase 1 of Operation "Nixon was Right, the press, the laws, the scrutiny, the quotes,..were Wrong."
Franklin (Maryland)
Why don't we stop comparing Mr Trump to prior presidents and judge him on the merits of whether his judgment, statements or proclamations seem to fit the rules of good government.
Just because he embraces video does not make him a modern or technological president. Why won't he converse with us his constituents (a word derived from the Constitution no less) and allow the total media, including questions, which we are free to ask in a democracy, about his policies?
Media that is only presentation is not consistent with democracy.
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Well Franklin, his judgment, statements, and proclamations do not fit the rules of good government. He seems to have no idea what government actually does, or how it works. So I judge him negatively based on that, not on using Youtube.
Debra (Chicago)
I will never ever watch this man's unfiltered self-promoting, self-produced communications. I will never watch his interviews with his hand-selected interviewers with their softball, predetermined questions. Trump's definition of "fair" press coverage strongly tilts the playing field in his favor. Fair to whom? Not to the American people, who have legitimate concerns that he plans to plunder the office of the President for personal gain.
Greenfield (New York)
Canada is now phasing out the last of their coal power plants. The writing is on the wall. Coal is in its death throes. Unless American workers are ready to mine it for minimum wage and no benefits, it will be sensible to leave it in the ground. Of course Trump won't see this truth....may help to post it on Twitter.
Also... since are repealing regulations and stripping the EPA, I see a cottage industry opportunity for personal air and water monitors....are you listening Google/Apple?
Tony Costa (Bronx)
A word with negative connotations immediately comes to mind when Trump uses Twitter and such YouTube videos that are intended to bypass the so-called main stream media (MSM).

It's propaganda.

Just like propaganda the more that he bypasses MSM the less effective it shall be. In less than two years the rest of America will realize that we have someone who forever lies and doesn't have our best interests at heart. Such narcissists never do.

After it was discovered that half the media (NYT, WaPo, HuffPo, CNN, Univision, et al) had been colluding with Hillary's campaign and the DNC, this move doesn't surprise me. Trump's cutting out the middle man because he realizes he no longer needs them. They've lost the public trust just like our law enforcement have -- and in both cases, the institutions only have themselves to blame. People would rather get their news from social media. If it's gonna be slanted either way, most folks would rather it be slanted *and* curated.

When I first saw the availability of the video clip on NYT, to which I subscribe, i clicked on it to watch it, and was very surprised that I was required to watch a commercial prior to see the video. Really. I already pay a subscription to the NYT. When the president releases video clips, you are going to make us watch commercials???
MarkAntney (Here)
If you CHOOSE to watch them via an outlet other than the actual source,..yeah you're also CHOOSing to see their commercial vendors.

But then again, "YouTube" has it own (set of) commercial vendors.

Maybe you'll have to DVR the Trumpsta to avoid Commercials or at least speed them up?
Dra (Usa)
I'm with you on the commercial bit. But you could go straight to youtube and see the same propaganda with a different commercial.

Please stop making this man seem innocuous in your headlines and reporting. Yes, you had abetted his rise to the office of president and no, you have not stopped making him seem less vicious and radical in his operations including conflicts of interest, under-reporting his 70+ lawsuits filed against him, not investigating the horror show of candidates he has already chosen for his cabinet. It's far from entertainment anymore.

But thanks for harping on Clinton's emails every chance possible, despite nothing there!

The more information I read/see on TV about "President-Elect" the MORE I am convinced he is on the FAST TRACK to complete dementia. He seems to focus on such useless things. like his scorn for the Press and whether someone is NICE or NAUGHTY to him. Had it not been for the Press and their complete cost free coverage of his utter nonsense, we wouldn't be faced with the hate which will surely keep growing in our country. Hopefully, some day, through our amazing history, he will read and learn about our great nation.

The article mentioned one point that deserves a giant underscore. The fewer bona-fide news conferences and press meetings Mr. Trump has, and the more the American people hear from him via Twitter and YouTube, the greater the chance we have for propaganda and misdirection to seep into our political discourse. Make no mistake, this is a serious danger. In a country that prizes freedom of the press, we must hold the president to account, and he simply must face reporters and answer difficult and probing questions. An occasional tweet or video simply isn't good enough, and we must demand more from our elected officials.
RickBeth (Washington DC)
I'm no Trump fan. But how is it that direct communications are automatically propaganda and mediated ones are automatically not? I take it Nyc's point is that dialogue, response, two way communication, is essential; but how is that requisite necessarily better met by "traditional" than by "social" media?
Ivy (Chicago)
Why is the same NYT that told us every day for months that Hillary's chances for winning were always over 85%, miffed that Trump is using social media?

Are the NYT and other MSM outlets angry that Trump isn't reading over their "news coverage" the way they handed their planned coverage to the Clinton Campaign for approval first before printing or airing?

Hillary bleached 30,000 emails and destroyed cell phones. That got a brief mention on page 20. Trump drops a gum wrapper and he's Public Enemy #1.

You know, NYT, a few people got turned off by the endless starry-eyed slobbering worship over the Obama administration and Clinton that they just don't trust you anymore. Imagine that. What were Hillary's chances of winning again?
N. Smith (New York City)
Just for the record. It wasn't ONLY the NYT that got it wrong -- Most pollsters did too! ...which is why it's absolute folly to bank on them.
Another thing.
"Slobering worship" is a purely subjective evaluation.
If people don't trust any politician or administration, it's a decsion they've reached on their own accord.
I would personally prefer seeing Clinton in office rather than that racist bigot we have now -- and I didn't need the NYT to come to that conclusion.
Cherrie McKenzie (Florida)
I trade my own stock account and one thing you learn is that you don't argue with the flow of the market if you want to make money (you may think you're right but the direction is against you). I mention that because You Tube may seem like the last place for real journalism but if that is where the people are then journalism should go there (ever heard of link backs NY Times?).

I talked to a young person who told me he goes to Instagram for inspiration, You Tube to learn things, Facebook to connect with friends, and twitter for news when something happens. Those would not be my choices but is the reality of the flow. Rather than looking down on them, journalism should take a leaf out of Mr. Trumps book and learn how to use them to support its message. Just a thought...
msf (NYC)
A President is not 'the Market'. And a One-way communication on YouTube is actually very old-fashioned, not allowing for multi-way interaction.
Cherrie McKenzie (Florida)
@msf I beg to differ regarding your comment. Seth Meyers and John Oliver do it quite well (one way communication on You Tube) and make you think while getting millions of views. Nothing old fashion there. True the President may not be the market but does operate as a reflection of public attitudes and behavior whether you and I like it or not.
Barry Williams (NY)
Where the flow occurs is not the problem. Recipients of the flow having the education and willingness to analyze what they see instead of accepting all input at face value or ignoring input if it contradicts favorite world views, and spending the time to compare alternate flows to verify things presented as facts, is what is important. All the new flows mean is that it is even easier than it used to be to 1) be confused, and 2) find others sharing your world view who can feed you confirming propaganda at the expense of truth.
Tom (California)

So, NYTimes, catering to Trump throughout his campaign isn't working so well for you. Trump threatens to exclude the Times and the Post from the White House and cancels a meeting with the Times' publisher and you respond by posting his carefully scripted, lying video? How is that reporting? And you continue to use misleading headlines - he "pledges" to create jobs? While he's said he want to cut the federal workforce significantly? Where is the actual reporting? You just repeat his statements - just another advertising avenue.
LZ (New York)
I hear nothing wrong and mostly agreed with the president-elect plan.
What is wrong with bailing out of TPP?Treaty that even Hillary was against, the same with Bernie.Trump said during his campaign it he would make this treaty dead, and he is on course to carry it out
What is wrong with going after abuse of visa program?Tens of thousands american professionals have been laid off and forced to train their foreign H1 visa replacements as a condition of severity package.Remember Disney, anyone?
What is wrong with protecting our security against cyber attack?WEren't the democrats just recently(and still) crying about Russian cyber attacks?Take a pick!
What is wrong with 5y ban on lobbying?Does not sound like pandering to big business to me
I do not agree with his plans regarding climate change and regulations, but I give him a chance to provide more details about what law he is planning to repeal. But if he finds the right balance between climate-friendly restrictions, regulations and creating new jobs, then let he pursue this.
He delivered his message via social media, so what?To me he just states to media, who he considers hostile:"Please go ahead, bash me.I have a way to communicate to public directly, thank you very much".Really,NY Times, when was the last time you printed the article friendly Mr.Trump?we all know about his bad qualities. Can someone from his support print an article explaining his good qualities on your pages? He must have some if 60ml people voted for him, right?
Bailey (Albany)
There is nothing "wrong" with bailing out of the TPP, but his reason "why" is not really clear. There are both pros & cons to the TPP, and his reason doesn't reflect on it...while its not required, it would be nice to make sense.

Nothing is wrong with going after abuse of the visa program. But, the concern is that people and businesses are concerned that this may, in fact, affect LEGAL immigration as never before....meaning that our competitive edge on technology could seriously suffer by cutting off our nose to spite our face.

There is nothing wrong with protecting out security against cyber attack. Its the world in which Snowden had warned us about that concerns many. Ironically and since you brought it up, it was Trump that seemed to give Russia the treasonous "OK" to hack away, remember?

The 5yr ban on lobbying only concerns those that that work in government positions. The only thing that apparently many are forgetting....ANYONE can become a lobbyist...what makes you think that big business will not be able to lobby because of this 5 year ban?
I don't agree with his climate change and repeal of regulations either. Especially when he says that he will "cancel job killing restrictions on the production of American energy, including shale energy (FRACKING) & clean coal (really? we are going to be going back to one of the dirtiest forms of energy? what is "clean" about it? LOL)....those are both not environment friendly forms of energy. where is he going with this?

How dare the media allow this madman’s YouTube video to be presented to the public as news. He is known for his pathological lying and deviousness and this is just how he is planning to play the media game. No question and answer sessions with the Press. Just the Big Face of Big Brother on a YouTube Facetime with the media servilely kow-towing to his vision of how he is going to communicate with the public. Trump will control freedom of speech not only by harassing the media, alike yesterdays "off the record" meeting and this mornings NYT cancellation. But by creating his own media channel. He will just go around the media, like he has been doing on twitter and last nights video, to completely control the message. Jared Kushner and Bannon are behind this out of the box strategy. Fake news stories on FB are a small story compared to this. He will be the fake news story and will limit the media's access to him.
Corbey (Austin, Texas)
So Trump has reduced the mainstream media to covering his tweets and two-minute You Tube videos? If the NYT gets lucky, maybe something new will turn up about Hillary's email server, and they'll be able to publish 10 more stories about that nonissue.

Why didn't, self obcessed ego maniac, trump do his branding products production with American manufacturers and labor in the first place?
Why if he's turning over his vast and very varied businesses over to his older children are they Not handeling that transision but all are on his president elect transition team, Only?
Why haven't they announced that All of the varied trump brands will move to American manufacturers in this country and be done by more then a living wage labor?
Why as he constantly talked about moving 'jobs' back to America, during the campaign, he made no moves to do exactly that as to his trump brand products?
He's had more then ample time to put together his tax returns during the campaign, They've had more then ample time to come up with the needed FOX speak for same, Where Are His Tax Returns?

He didn't do business here for the same reason many other companies left. Too many regulations and some of the highest corporate taxes in the world . DR (New England)

President Elect Trump is using a valid and current medium to share his message. There is nothing wrong with that, except if you are a news media outlet that would like to skew the message it does not work out well. Even now after the election, a lot of the mainstream media is reporting from a negatively biased perspective. Please, get back to reporting the news as facts - what, where, when, why, and how. No opinions, no reading between the lines, no personal thoughts, just the news as facts. Assume that the reader is intelligent and can understand and consume the news on their own.

DCarter (Las Vegas, NV)
The USA had lost all it's ability to manufacture anything thanks entirely to NAFTA, Thank God now you will have the opportunity to open a small scale manufacturing company there in Missouri to begin making these items in the USA, hire many people, and enjoy a lower tax rate for your new company. After you open your new manufacturing company go ahead and reach out to Ivanka and offer to make her items with the "Made In America" label.
Uncle Eddie (Tennessee)
Once again, Mr. Trump makes outlandish promises and no one holds him accountable. The natural resources and mining sector has rarely employed 1 million people, yet his claim that he will create "millions of jobs" in that sector goes unchecked other than people voicing opinion. BLS has a database of job numbers going back to the 1930s. Opinions are a dime a dozen. Show the facts.
Cdwahlquist (Kaysville, UT)
Donald's opposition to the media is evidenced by his choice of releasing "news" on YouTube. This is media he can control and fully propagandize. The question for the media is whether the real news sources will take a stand on a president elect who locks out the free press.
DCarter (Las Vegas, NV)
President-Elect Trump is bypassing MSM due to the unfair and biased "reporting" by that same MSM. The press is no longer "Free", and certainly the MSM hates anyone who cuts into their propagandizing agenda.
mbcny (nyc)
It is also a way not to allow the news media to selectively pick and choose which parts they want to report, then pepper it with accusations and negative commentary in order to leave the wrong impression and push their "take down trump" agenda. For instance, NYT reported after 1 week that Trump's transition team was in disarray, when 8 yr's ago Obama hadn't even begun his transition yet. It's the new media that spews propaganda about Trump.
Cheekos (South Florida)
How does Trump plan to add jobs when his ideologically DUMB economic policies, which he has vowed to enact, will move America in the opposite direction. Consider:

1. His slapping tariffs on imports from other countries will, in turn, bring counter-tariffs on our exports. Costs will rise, inflation will surge, consumer spending will decline, as will the GDP, and America will return to recessionary. Such a recession in the world's largest economy might cause the contagion to go global--shades of The Great Recession of the 1930s.

2. Trump's vow, along with the GOP's, to repeal the Dodd-Frank legislation, enacted in 2010. could take us back to George W. Bush's fiscal abyss, back in 2008. The Wall Street Banks were the major culprits in causing that, with: originating "sub-prime" mortgages; trading toxic assets and having insufficient capital as a buffer against the undue risk.

Consider that when Wells Fargo was found guilty of opening millions of unauthorized customer deposit and credit card accounts, it was the CFPB, which was formed under Dodd-Frank, that disclosed the scam--not the bank's own internal controls. Do you want to let the banks roll the dice AGAIN with our money?

Trump's avowed policies could very well lead to: considerable inflation; reduced consumer spending; a weakening economy; much high unemployment and skyrocketing home foreclosures.

Good luck to us all!

Can it be that Trump is backing away from the promises he made to those that voted for him.It doesn’t come as a surprise that politicians will say anything to get elected, it’s almost expected, & quickly forgotten.Lets put aside the red herrings & concentrate on what really matters,Jobs.Trump will create millions of jobs in infrastructure & defense, & all the broken promises about walls, immigration,& the elimination of Obama Care will be forgiven. There will be increased emphasis on immigration, & a correction wherever necessary to make Obama Care more sustainable, but it will not not be thrown out in it’s entirety.I hope I’m reading him correctly, as I still believe under his orange hair there lies a secular progressive.

Can anybody explain how illegal immigration now is a American Civil right? anybody please explain it.
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Nobody is claiming that.
dubious (new york)
Sure sounds like it where anyone disapproving of it and correctly labeling it criminal entry into our country is labelled a 'racist' and bigot. We are all immigrants generations back but we came in through legal immigration rules and most of us support immigration but it must be legal and not a political gimmick to eventually bank their votes.
Mor (California)
So President-Elect talks directly to the people without the filter of the "lying" media. This is how the free newspapers of the Weimar Republic were first made irrelevant, then silenced, then destroyed. I invite everybody to read the astonishing piece by Timothy Snyder, one of the greatest historians of the Holocaust, published in Slate, in which he demolishes the myth that Nazism was some unique monster that appeared out of nowhere and that could never be repeated. Nazism was initially a political populist movement, just like any other. The rejection of the free press, the contempt for the intellectual "elites", the denigration of knowledge and expertise, xenophobia and antisemitism, are on full display in the Trump voters' rhetoric, and historical parallels are clear. Yes, your leader speaks directly to you. How do you know he is not lying?
Nicholas Blumling (Troy, NY)
How do you know when the media is not lying? Clearly the polls were accurate!
Mor (California)
The independent media presuppose a reading public educated enough to know the difference between a faulty prognosis and a deliberate lie. Thank you for proving my point!

As Trump limits press access and tries to demonize the media, it's incumbent on us to support print, online, radio and televised media that engage in investigative reporting with paid subscriptions.

Trump is a bully yet cannot tolerate any criticism and is limiting media access to control his message.
mbcny (nyc)
Trump is a bully, but so is the mainstream media. They twisted his message throughout the election, never once reporting on his policy ideas, only on his ill chosen words. I trust the media even less than I trust Trump.

President-Elect Trump is limiting the MSM Press for this simple reason...The New so-called "Free" Press are a pack of propagandizing liars.....America is sick and tired of the press...............

Be vigilant America! Please do not pretend that there is not a white supremacist in the White House. Trump has never denounced the Alt-right positions and appointing Bannon is the proof. Check your history, this is the rise of Nazism and Facism in America. The Republican party is going along with this as a normal policy. First step, denounce the press and use alternative methods to reach the base. The Trump presidency is counting on our complacency.
Be ever vigilant. This is not the pre election joke anymore, this is our Constitutional rights at stake.
DCarter (Las Vegas, NV)
A "white supremacist" Really? Come on.....as far as Bannon, where is your evidence to make such a statement? I have searched the internet and found no evidence of what you just stated. Now you speak of the "rise of Nazism and Facism in America" this is just ridiculous. The "press" and I use that label loosely these days, needs a wake up call to get back to real neutral reporting, America does NOT trust the MSM Press anymore. Concerning Facism, have you visited the Lincoln Memorial lately? look at Lincoln's seat, and more directly at the chair arms directly below his resting hands, Facism has played a part in America almost since the begining of this country. The Judicial Department has the symbol of Facist in their seals............come on Really? and you think and/or believe that facisim is "on the rise", then you are not informed either by choice or your eyes are as closed as your mind.

He made one phrase in this canned speech that clearly echoes Mitch McConnell: "Clean coal." Wake up, there's no such thing!

Mr. Trump, talk to a man who has spent years working at coal mining; notice his coughing and bloodshot eyes, then ask him how clean his job has been.
Clare O'Hara (Littleton, CO)
Trump will do whatever he can to avoid facing a press conference. Venues like 60 Minutes with his Greek chorus family in the background is about all he can handle. He isn't adept at fielding questions...he will take it personally, lose his temper and sputter out. So we are left with freaky videotapes as a means of keeping the public informed. Good luck, NYTimes with your meeting with him today.

He's going to bring a wrecking ball to corruption (says the man who refuses to divest himself or his family from his global businesses.)

Funny that the man who is surrounding himself with some of the most vitriolic anti-gay people I can think of appears to be taking a page from one of the most revered gay icons, Harvey Milk. You remember: "You gotta give 'em hope." Or, in Trump's case, cake.

Mr. Trump is a coward, indeed... as others have indicated he is afraid to do any press conferences not so much because he hates the media as he makes everyone think... he actually used the media's coverage of him (for free) to get his messages at his rallies out... spent very little on tv ads since networks provided all the ads he needs.... he fears press conferences because after he gets his venom out he knows he will be questioned and he will either have to defend indefensible position or he will have to show america and the world of how little he knows about anything... his ignorance will be exposed like never before... and since he cannot go through a whole presidency with youtube and tweets, he will one day have to face the press and the world will see first hand what thing country has elected... an incompetent unfit bully
bvocal (va)
What he says has little to no resemblance to what his actions tell us.
Susan Tarvin (West Linn, OR)
Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned. But I don't watch You Tube videos for my news, I read the New York Times and Washington Post and local news. He's going to spend all his precious time dodging the press making videos like this. Doesn't he have more important issues to tackle? This man is coming off extremely paranoid and unstable. He cannot control every little thing, he will soon be President. It does not give me confidence about the road ahead.
Gusjim (Surf City NC)
Of course YouTube! The man can't string three sentences together without sounding like a complete dope in an impromptu situation.
Louweegie272 (Carmel, CA)
He promised to deport illegal immigrants, not all immigrants. Mexican Billionaire Carlos Slim has drastically altered the Times coverage of politics in the United States.
Mary (New Jersey)
Why advertise for him with th article's title. Trump loves to spout off but the words (e.g., "Lock her up.") are just bait and don't mean anything.
Steve (UK)
Why he even gave this rag the time of day I will never know. They have done nothing but slag him off the whole time.
JP (New Jersey)
You're still reading (NYTimes), and commenting here I see. There are other options- Steve.
Kate Caldwell (Royalton, VT)
Nope. Not going to watch it. I don't want to be one more hit to feed this man's outsized ego. Come out from behind the curtain Mr. Trump!
Jackie Hovey (Pacific Northwest)
"The comments are disabled for this video." I only went there for the comments.
Southern Boy (The Volunteer State)
For those who call the president-elect a coward for using social media, please remember that Ms. Clinton announced her candidacy for president through the same platform. Thank you.
rosa (ca)
Are you saying that's why she has gotten 1.5 million more votes than he has?
Southern Boy (The Volunteer State)
@Rosa: I said Clinton used social media to announce candidacy for the presidency, nothing more, nothing less. Thank you.
rosa (ca)
Fair. So how do you account for her receiving 1.5 million more votes than him?
Joey (TX)
Turmp's reliance on Twitting, and his comment about the press (NYTimes) - "In the meantime they continue to cover me inaccurately and with a nasty tone! " - provide more evidence of his pathological delusion.

When an extraordinary narcissist cannot reconcile his ego with external measures of his deceptions, manipulations, exploitations, and failures... he must create a "new" reality that explains how those external measures are wrong, and that he is admirable. It's a depraved attempt to rescue his own ego, and reveals exactly how he will be manipulated by foreign heads of state to their advantage. They need only to launch credible campaigns to highlight his flaws and he will expend all of his energy trying to rewrite reality.
mbcny (nyc)
Do you honestly consider the NYT coverage of Trump objective?
Joey (TX)
Sensible people don't need the NYTimes coverage to recognize Turmp's personality disorder, and how it is similar to Adolf Hitler, Kim Jong-un, and Vladimir Putin. Over 60M voters in the US failed to learn the lesson of history, and failed to recognize this Turmp as a serious threat to our democracy. It is my sincere hope that the press will turn up the heat on Turmp over the next 4 weeks, pushing him to implode before inauguration day.
Kathyinct (Fairfield County CT)
But still he tweets on.

The Mercers' puppet performs on cue from Steve and Kellyann, but they cannot rein him in at 3 a.m. in his bedroom.
Mary (undefined)
This is actually a very, very good thing for the emperor with no clothes who thinks that he controls everyone else to not be able or desirous of controlling himself.
DR (New England)
When will Trump products be made here in the U.S.?
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Just another stream of lies from Trump. I see no reason to pay any attention to it or believe it in the slightest.
Linda (Massachusetts)
It's interesting that Trump has chosen to showcase how he will communicate his policy ideas, i.e. not through the media that he so thoroughly disparages, but via the new kid on the block, social media where he can control his message. I found it instructive that he cancelled his meeting with the NYT today. I believe the NYT should have expected this. After all, I believe it was in your pages that I read how he in the past said he would negotiate with nuclear arms strategists: show up late, stand above the opposing negotiator, shove his finger in their chest, call them a name, tell them this is how the game is played, like it or leave it, and then walk away. The Times should have known that this is what he is doing to them.
Mary (undefined)
Oligarchs, fascists, financiers got where they are via control of the overarching processes...that either they or their associates already own. The tentacles always lead back to BIG BANKING.

Follow the money. It never fails to be true.
Jacqueline (New England)
I have no doubt they knew exactly what his behavior would be like. He hasn't ever strayed too far from it. But he isn't in the board room any more. He doesn't control everything like he thinks he can. The Constitution's First Amendment is a beautiful thing! GO NYT!
Sayeeshwar Sathyanarayan (Jersey City)
Democrats and their supporters in the print and media have to stop their war against the President-elect and realize that the election is over. As Ari Fleischer said, Trump can simply bypass traditional media and reach the people through social media. Whether they like him or not, he is going to be the President for at least 4 years. Creating a furor every time he ditches the press pool and yet barely reporting when Barack Obama does the same thing is not going to endear the MSM well with people who are not Democratic partisans.
Brian Waldron (Atlantic Highlands, NJ)
United States' executive branch policy plans deserve more than a YouTube broadcast — their importance transcends that of cat videos. The New York Times along with other news outlets must demand press conferences with Mr. Trump so that the American people can see, hear and learn what their president is thinking, from the back and forth of that format.
JMM. (Ballston Lake, NY)
I understand that the media have taken a fair amount of heat for enabling and/or not digging enough into Trump's background. I certainly think the NYT and WaPo did a great job of digging, but sadly, the electorate, as defined by the electoral college did not seem to care. Mitt Romney was excoriated over a 47% comment and nothing seems to stick to Trump. He rode a lot of anger and fear to the WH and I don't see how that anger and fear will subside at all in the next 4 years. The notion that what we've seen of this man for 70 years is not what we'll see once he "changes" in the WH is laughable.

I am beyond embarrassment - I'm in full blown fear mode right now. I have never seen a man so ill equipped to deal with a job that requires patience, compromise, selflessness, intellect and focus as Donald Trump. The media has the most important role of any institution going forward and I'm happy the NYT is there to keep digging and reporting. We need you to get answers on his businesses and conflicts of interest. We need you to scour every silly bill that the diabolical Steve Bannon is cooking up that is not "sexy," but quietly erodes at our freedoms. We need dogged pursuit of "private sector solutions" that will be used for infrastructure etc. that will reward him and his benefactors.

I don't trust this man and we cannot take our eyes off him for one day.
MarkAntney (Here)
Similar here though,..I'm not as fearful as you.

For historically, pathologically, psychologically,...I know what to expect from Bullies,..Bullying.
Barry Williams (NY)
Bottom line: half of the electorate didn't vote. We get what we deserve.
MarkAntney (Here)
BW, you're absolutely correct.
Dave (Florida)
Pathetic infomercial. By the end I half expected him to start pitching Trump steaks.
Mike (NYC)
As far as TPP goes, the issue is how many jobs does it create for US workers versus how many jobs it loses for US.

Seems to be a no-brainer.
Jacqueline (New England)
The elimination of NAFTA or TPP does not negate the fact a Bangladeshi worker earns $25/week and will allow any corporation to make more money out of the US than in it... same for Chinese, Mexican, Vietnamese, Korean, etc.... Congress will never allow a 35% tariff on those companies who refuse to relocate to the US. Who do you think donates to them for their PACs? Multi billion dollar industries will pay the fine or the minimal tariff because it will be much cheaper than relocating. If anything, they will build 1 factory as a token to take advantage of the tariff. Corporations are stupid like foxes. Trump knows that. Delivery of minimum campaign promises is all he needs to say he was successful. The benefit to the average American less than 1%.
Clark Stroupe (Culpeper VA)
It should come as no surprise that his "Presidential" message to deregulate energy is introduced by an EXXON commercial.
DebR (Boston)
I thought 1984 immediately. This can't be happening to us, can it? But it is true they can't really trust him to speak live. NYT you did go a bit easy on him here by comparing his use of social media to Obama's use -- there is no comparison. And as an aside I did try to follow him on twitter to find out what he actually was saying, but one re-tweet and comment and I guess he removed me from his followers. Democracy at it's finest.
Kate (Toronto)
He is so stupid he can't do a press conference because he knows he can't put a coherent sentence together on his own in response to question that he hasn't been prepped for.
Jacqueline (New England)
As the past 18 months have shown.....you can never believe anything Trump says. Treat him as you would a commercial...full of lies, manipulation of visual effects and meant for you to buy a product you don't want and don't need.
Hozeking (Hoosier Snowbird)
As you write, this is just an update. It was never meant to be an all encompassing plan including each and every one of his plans. Understanding that, prepare yourself for the wall and all the other commitments he made to get elected.
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
You don't seem to understand him yet. None of the commitments he made to get elected. Just said today, there will be no investigation of Hillary Clinton. There will be no wall either, he won't deport 11 million Mexicans, he won't defeat ISIS within a month, he won't bring back manufacturing jobs. Every promise he made to you was a lie. I know you won't accept this yet, but when it becomes blindingly apparent that none of his promises will get done, try to realize you've been lied to all along.
Incredulous (St. Petersburg)
I'm confused. Wasn't the remarkable 'Contract with the American Voter' announced on the hallowed grounds of Gettysburg (after the denunciation of the women accusing Mr. Trump of sexual harassment or worse) the 100 day plan? What about The Wall? What about China? What about the hiring freeze? What about canceling climate change funding? What about sanctuary city defunding? What about the mass deportations? What about the Task Force on Violent Crime? There were 28 items on that Contract.
MiguelM (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.)
Love him or hate him he is a true Maverick. Conservatives had to sit back through 8 years of Obama, now we'll see with Trump. I'm far from his biggest fan but, Obama, was one of the most polarizing Presidents in history. Now the same Media who provided him and Hilary Clinton cover, are being neutralized as he will take his message to the people directly. The media have no answer to this and it's brilliant. If they had not been pure propaganda for Obama and his agenda maybe they could be trusted.
rufustfirefly (Columbus, OH)
President Obama was not the one that was polarizing. It was the right wing anti-Obama lie machine that did the polarizing.
Dave (Louisiana)
You said it exactly right. I find it richly ironic that the latest media clarion call is outrage over Trump's not having had a press conference since July. Where were they on the campaign trail when Crooked went over 250 days without one? There's a double standard.
SheebA (Brooklyn)
Sorry but when it comes to Maverick, I will take a someone who has served this country and as a POW over this man who has served only himself.

Obama did have press conferences. We are still waiting for the Elect to be interrogated. These one way conversations and tweets just do not cut it.

It may be deemed brilliant by some if we were talking about a House of Cards episode. But this reality is very troubling.
Mark (Capitol Hill, the lions' den)
Is there anything that demonstrates more clearly than this video that the Celebrity Apprentice named Trump is merely the front man for a cabal that intends to rule America in secrecy and in complete abandonment of all principles of democracy?
Full Name (U.S.)
To be honest, I don't have a huge problem with this. Were he to choose to communicate only with, for example, Breitbart, I would worry. Were he saying anything inflammatory, I would worry. He threw out several bones for the media to discuss, investigate and explain. I'll be curious to read coverage of what the 2 for 1 regulations idea is and if he can even do that.

I don't think that the media should let him off the hook in the slightest, but at the same time, we have no choice but to deal with him. The sad part is that I went from worrying about him to being hopeful that HE is the moderating influence for those he has surrounded himself with.
baixadog (Vancouver, BC)
Personally I have no problem with Trump using Youtube or other forms of media to get his message out. The bigger problem is I don't believe a word he says.
So FL (Reader)
So, The Donald has decided to try to beat up the press and go around them by posting directly to YouTube. As another poster mentioned, very 1984. I for one, will avoid viewing his self serving, unquestioned videos. Instead, I'll read the analysis from the NYTimes, NBC, and all the other sources he criticized. We will need a strong and vigilant fourth estate during the next four years.
Viriditas (Rocky Mountains)
There is no question that the internet can Democratize the news. It can also lend the appearance of truth to lies. together with the few billionaires that control media outlets it looks far more like the beginning of Big Brother constant infomercials. Run them often enough, and they become the truth. If Trump hasn't taught us anything else he's show the "big lie" is very much alive, and functioning in the Internet age. "I'm going to create millions of jobs, and tremendous wealth" How, and gee, why didn't anyone else think of that?
olnpvx (Chevy Chase, MD)
Are we accepting the trump communication route that one speaks in slogan on video and we listen and follow? We would have made the country the most pitiful, sad and shameful "country of the democratic system".
Mark Leneker (New York, NY)
I don't blame Trump's team for circumnavigating the press; I'd do the same thing if I had such a uniquely unqualified president-elect.
sbmd (florida)
After watching how Trump is planning to communicate, using YouTube and avoiding the Press, like something out of 1984, I hope all the electors to the Electoral College are having doubts about the integrity of their man and pondering whether they can rescue the country with their votes.
Ron Aaronson (NY)
I have decided not to listen to any of Trump's speechifying for I can't take anything he says as the truth. I also can't bear to look at him and be reminded he is the President. I am still trying to understand how we ended up here.
Dave (Florida)
It's creeping fascism, and it won't end with Trump.
rosa (ca)
The "Electoral College".
FRITZ (<br/>)
Hmm, lowering or canceling restrictions on the production of American energy likely translates into doing away with environmental regulations that are there for good reason. What is tragically ironic is that the impacts on the environment will be felt most by those communities that supported him and are probably the least able to reeducate, retrain or relocate for new jobs. But then who knows; the Flint Michigan water crisis (or the VW emissions fraud) taught us that no matter who sits in the White House (how environmentally progressive your country is), there will always be people who push and cross the limits of the law for personal gain at the cost of citizens and the environment. In the end, 'wait and see' may be the best we can do at this point. It's what I'm doing.
llama (New York, NY)
It's very strange that Mr. Fleischer describes the "really boring" Trump as one whose key staffing decisions have all been towards empowering far-right bigots, whose prejudices range from antisemitism to hostility to African-American voting to white supremacy (euphemistically re-branded as "white nationalism.") It's stranger still for the New York Times to simply print Mr. Fleisher quotes without any context or attempt to show why many people think creating an administration of people with well-known racist predilections is anything but "boring."
Jolie (Los Angeles)
Trump has to hide behind the camera because he doesn’t want to interact with real humans unless they are screaming at his rallies. The US will be embarrassed when he attempts to field questions from the foreign press overseas. He cannot address their questions intelligently in real time being that he has no understanding of history or the nuances of governing. Someone will have to assist him via earpiece.
chrisinauburn (auburn, alabama)
The Trump presidency will be like a post-apocalyptic movie with the dear, fearless leader hiding behind a camera in a safe room announcing policy without the interference of a free press or citizenry.
Nixon's paranoia will seem amusing in comparison.
MarkAntney (Here)
"Nixon", you hit it the nail on the head, except in COMPARISON, Nixon's (paranoia) will actually seemed justified:):)
Janet Young (Orleans, MA)
Until and unless he holds an actual authentic press conference where he is subject to spontaneous questions from the nation's press, the nation's press should refuse to give air and front page space to these pieces of propaganda.

Period.
Barry Williams (NY)
Sorry, we at least need to see what the propaganda is. Just keep pointing out that, until questions can be posed and answered, it remains propaganda.

Taking away light just gives rats more play in the dark.
Luisa (Coral Gables, FL)
As of August 31, 2016 Clinton had gone 270 days without a press conference...Where was the outrage then? Clinton corraled journalists at the 2016 Fourth of July parade in Gorham, NH... Where was the outrage then? Clinton used social media to announce her presidential bid...Where was the outrage then? A great man from my home country once said it best:
"Liberty is the right of every man to be honest, to think and speak without hypocrisy." -Jose Marti
It seems the "lady doth protest to much, methinks" -Shakespeare
Barry Williams (NY)
Clinton press conferences would always devolve into questions about the stupid emails. Why should she bother? One problem I have with the media throughout the campaign is that neither candidate was pressed to relate and clarify proposed policies anywhere near to the level of attention things like emails and tweeting got. If both had their feet held to the fire to completely explain their policies, and we kept hammering at that, Clinton would have won. We would have seen once and for all that, with Trump, the emperor had no clothes.
Jim (Columbia, MO)
His statement about eliminating two regulations for every new one struck me as absurd insofar as it treats regulations quantitatively rather than qualitatively, i.e. is a regulation useful, what is its purpose, rather than how many are there. No doubt there will now be arguments over what constitutes a regulation. It's unclear if pulling out of TPP is a good thing for workers. Withdrawing from TPP is not really a plan for creating jobs so much as it is a possible plan for not losing jobs to lower wage countries.
Barry Williams (NY)
...which not actually be accomplished by pulling out.

If this stuff was easy, there would be no problems in the world relating to it.
Al M (Norfolk)
Cutting to the chase, Trump is vowing to eliminate climate progress and limits on filthy fossil fuels. His "infrastructure security" is aimed at protecting pipelines, fracking and other fossil fuel projects from citizen protests. This is a corporate coup against American citizens, against the future and against the planet.

We can, must and will protect ourselves by any means necessary. If lawmakers won't protect the environment and public health, we will have no choice but to do so ourselves.
Richard (Wynnewood PA)
There is only one Trump, and we saw him during the campaign. Trump is an actor/entertainer first and foremost. He's been doing it throughout his career. He plays to the audience. He's entirely focused on the ratings, whether as a TV game show personality or as President. He lives for applause. And he seeks to denigrate and destroy those, including in the press, who give him unfavorable reviews. He will not change. We will only hear what he thinks we want to hear. If his ratings drop -- and they will -- he will change his act. But it will always be an attempt to recharge his ratings, not to follow any thoughtful public policy objective.
saywhat? (NY, NY)
The marketer-in-chief-to-be is at it again, simultaneously commanding the media to his tent and putting them on notice to report according to his terms, then going on an unfiltered media site to provide those who follow him there a carefully scripted narrative from his toadies.

It is well past time that the media stop marching to his tune and hold him accountable for his words and actions; the media cannot allow fair and honest reporting to be defined by Trump.
RLW (Chicago)
Words are cheap and Trump has been contradicting himself since he started in the politics business, and probably ever since he learned to talk. Over 60 million people either believed what he said even though he was shown to be a pathologic liar or, at best, delusional, denying what he had previously said even when confronted with recordings of his words. Now, even though he lost to Hillary by over I million votes, the Electoral college will certify him as the President-elect. We know we cannot rely on his words, even when recorded. We must now wait to see what he will actually do when in office. Some will be stiffed, some will prosper. God Bless America.
Barry Williams (NY)
And so it begins. Trump will do everything he accused his opponents of doing, to the Nth degree.

Lack of transparency? Instead of news conferences, tailored video bursts on the Internet and favored nation leaks to breitbart.com. Meetings with foreign dignitaries we might know about only if one deigns to speak about it.

Conflicts of interest? His kids will run his businesses AND sit in on meetings with anyone the President will deal with. His son-in-law absolutely MUST have security clearances as high as he can swing it. Already selected members of his cabinet are known to have business dealings with foreign entities, some at least as questionable as anything the Clintons were accused of. No blind trust - but then, when it's your kids running it, how could it ever be truly blind? And with lack of transparency, how would we ever know the blindness was compromised? There will be pay for play, and unlike with a heavily monitored and regulated charity, there will be NO evidence of it unless someone squeals.

Cronyism? Enough said.

Rule by fiat via executive order? First thing he says he will do is roll out a host of executive orders, not a hint of any legislation he will propose for Congress to consider save in broad, meaningless slogans. And the ridiculous 1-for-2 rule about new regulations vs old regulations. No lobbyists in the administration? Great...except, Trump's administration won't need them - entities will be able to deal invisibly directly with it.
shend (Brookline)
Trump simply does not need the traditional media to communicate. I would not be surprised if the Trump WH cancels daily press briefings, as not necessary. The fact is that Trump will use social media as his communications platform. Traditional press platforms of newspaper, TV and cable are going to be largely sidelined in a Trump Administration.
Billy (Out in the woods. Down by the river.)
FDR communicated directly with the people in his weekly fireside chats. The press does not own a space between the president and the people.

This is not Bernie's revolution that could have been, but many of us see the direct communications as a breath of fresh air (ok, hot air) nonetheless.
Svenbi (NY)
Somebody mentioned George Orwell here, very appropriate. He does not want to face the press, nor any potential questions which might be asked to substantiate any of his half wit proposals, he just wants to appear, out of the blue, like the wizard of Oz, bestowing his will upon us. Let's leave him there, in his own virtual world, where he belongs, in the safety of his tasteless tower, like Rapunzel. We will not be baited to climb and follow your orange hair. If you should have something to say: Call a press conference in the real world and be a man, face the music as real presidents do.
alexander hamilton (new york)
Very entertaining for an alleged "democracy." Our fearless leader, filmed in advance and released on "social media."

Pretty soon, someone will have to hold up the day's newspaper in the background, so we can assure ourselves that the latest "pronouncement" wasn't made weeks or months earlier, and that this sniveling puppet is still alive.

Afraid of the free press much, Donald? You haven't even taken office yet. And so the Grand Experiment ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.
Chico (Laconia, NH)
I'm sorry and maybe it's me, maybe I'm a little old fashioned, but it's hard to take Trump seriously when he reminds me of Beaver Cleaver in an adult body looking like he is performing a remedial reading exercise.

I can't help thinking that the election of Trump, in some ways is the culmination of the dumbing down of our society, with the help of social media, and the lack of scrutiny by the print and televised media at the start of his campaign.

Now, this is what we have to look forward to for 4 years, the man we heard and saw during his campaign is who the man that has been elected, sad, but true.
Gary (Seattle)
So, the phantom of the night speaks again in no real specific terms. One can only speculate that what he really intends to do is make decrees through some form of martial law of these miracles.
Voiceofamerica (United States)
If Republicans want to attend the theater, it is time to force them to write their own plays as well as their own novels; they need to compose their own music, they need to produce their own scientists, not parasitize liberal culture. The truth is, they can not create. Their only talent is destruction. They do not belong to our society.
Europe (Europe)
America people in four years you can vote again. As I'm totally shocked in the outcome of the choice of the American people. Some of the outcome maybe worthwhile as for example Europe obligation to strengthen our one forces and take more responsibility in the problems around and in Europe. As fore future policy of America during the Trump period as president of America and in some way the world i'm scared of his way of thinking. For example the way he talks about women and the way he asked his wive to stand up to proudly cope with the laughter in the room on the remark he made of her use the speech of Michelle Obama and then see that almost 50% of the America women vote on this man, he must be thinking "they are really stupid". And the examples goes on and on. I keep mine fingers crossed and hope that America people come to her senses after the coming four years.
jmolka (new york)
This method of "communication" is straight out of the propagandist's playbook. It's like the monitors all citizens must have in their homes in Orwell's 1984. Trump wants to relay a message to the masses without any possibility of questions or interruptions or protests. It's an end run around journalists who might hold his feet to the fire. He will never have to deal with them directly. They can stamp their feet and shake their fists, but none of Trump's supporters will ever see it. They don't read The NY Times. They don't watch Meet the Press. At this point, they don't even need Fox in order to get Trumps propaganda. All they need is monitors in their homes. It won't be long, I predict, before Trump establishes an "official" network devoted solely to his proclamations, tantrums, grudges, and vanity. The media did not tame this beast in its infancy and now I wish them good luck in trying to do so now.
JoanneN (Europe)
The formerly respected mainstream media of the USA has failed spectacularly where it most matters. They meekly accept to participate in ff-the-record meetings demanded by their own creation, te Reality Star; they had earlier refused to take him seriously, despite warning signs, and failed to hold him to account *before* he became the nominee; and of course, long before this election you had fallen in line with Dubyas' illegal war in the Middle East, the price for which the US, and the world, is still paying.

But threaten the TTP and you publish concerned editorials, fretting that the abandonment of the very free-trade deals that gave you President-elect Trumpf will undermine America's standing in the world. Don't you understand? America's standing is dependent, first and foremost, on its image as the beacon of democracy, economic opportunity for all, equality before the law and free speech. Take that away, and the world will soon ask why the US is in any way preferable to China or Russia. It's doing so already.
Ari Backman (Chicago)
What is it with this guy? There is no transparency, commitment or spine. Perhaps after all he is a perfect populist politician (do not read policy maker or legislator); grab voters' mood and anger, make empty promises, indulge on extra marital relationships, personally benefit from the corrupt office and don't get pinned by the media. He is being given a chance to improve himself, but this is a 'gift' that keeps giving unwanted presents to the taxpayers.
Cyn (New Orleans, La)
If ever there was a time that this country needed a courageous press, this is it.

One of my main concerns about a Trump presidency was is inability to handle scrutiny. Now we see his solution to that trait is not learning to take criticism, but to simple try to control the press to escape it.

In my opinion, it is this trait that is most dangerous.
KC (VA)
The country gets what they voted for. They voted for a TV showman and here we have a President who will be a TV showman.

I cannot refrain from commenting on the similarities he has with the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi (who was once banned from entering the US). After Mr Modi won the elections, he has not had much interviews, he uses Twitter and Facebook and does not like answering questions. The worlds two major democracies are indeed taking a different direction - Is this the new face of democracy?
Jacqueline (New England)
A leader who cannot interact or compromise with people of intellect or opposing views for even questions about their ideology or details about their policies is no leader of Democracy at all. It is merely a front for insider manipulations and profiteering.
Ron (21211)
Well . . the country gets what the electoral college system produces of the vote (which was for someone else).
GAR (New York)
Expect that this years State of the Union address to be on Twitter or You Tube. Remember there is no requirement to go to the Capitol.
john (boston)
The republicans are behind the curve. They are science and fact phobic. Solutions to problems that don't exist. There is a need to heal and bring the country together but these plans are more of the same ineffective antiquated strategies from tired old men who only look out for themselves. I hope to God that young voters get in the game after this. Minority voters too (unless they continue to be excluded from the process by the republican party).

If he doesn't choose to participate through the regular news channels because he's afraid of participating in the debate so be it. The media should be very tough on him now that he skated by in the campaign.
Andrew G. Bjelland, Sr. (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Will President-Elect Trump's pro-American-jobs, anti-globalist and anti-establishment populism be the major force within the new Republican Party?

Or will Speaker Ryan seize the day, continue to claim a "mandate" directing his "united Republican government" to fast-track the tried and found wanting GOP establishment agenda? Will the GOP remain the party dedicated to tax-breaks, primarily for already wealthy individuals and corporations; to financial and environmental deregulation; to privatization and or "reform" (weakening) of the social safety net, etc.?

Can we rest assured that whatever accommodation Mr. Trump might receive from the Ryan-McConnell establishment, by 2018 it will be evident to all voters that the GOP has led the citizenry further down the path toward laissez fairer crony capitalism and a new Gilded Age?

Under the "united Republican government" lauded by Mr. Ryan, can there be any outcome other than greater wealth for the plutocratic few and serfdom for the many? Does this "Road to Serfdom" perfectly serve the interests of the Ayn-Randian Speaker Ryan and of the opportunistic Senate Majority Leader McConnell?

How can a plutocratic "populist" like Mr. Trump resist the force of Mr. Ryan's mandate and effectively abandon Mr. Trump's own lifelong commitment to self-interest and plutocracy?
MsPea (Seattle)
Fine. Let him stick to You Tube if he's afraid to face any real questions. At least he's not blustering all over our televisions anymore. This could work out pretty well for those who would rather pretend he just doesn't exist.
Andrew (Boston)
The Trump YouTube message can be described as propaganda and yes, it appears than Bannon wrote it or at least the economic part. Sit back a moment and consider what the NYT daily slams against Trump and dismissal of Bernie Sanders for a year on its front page and editorial pages did for the country, while lauding how wonderful Clinton was, despite her total lack of a clear vision for America. Well, that is not totally true, Clinton's clear vision was seeing herself as President. The NYT should have been reporting on facts about not just Trump, but about its champion, Clinton. Of course, the entire election might well have gone to Bernie had the HYT not dismissed him summarily in the spring. While the NYT subscriptions are apparently surging, it might consider reporting facts so that the little people can decide whom they support.
MarkAntney (Here)
What did the NYTs not report about Hilary?

BTW, I H8 to quote a great Hall and Oates song (also Tavares) but "She's Gone".

So is Sanders. I didn't notice Trump focusing on them in his Pledge to create jobs.
Bruce (Panama City)
A watered down version of Trump made a perfunctory presentation of what he would do in his first several days. Bravo! That seemed to be as inspiring as the speed of a tortoise. White nationalists are clamoring right under his nose, and so far he has not chosen to directly allay the fears of the minorities, pitted against the hate groups. His surrogates like Kellyanne Conway are making statements condemning violence, but not a word from the supremo.

At this rate, it appears he may govern the nation just thru his henchmen and tweets. Whatever speech he has made so far, seemed feckless, but thankfully not reckless, just as yet. Another feature his speech lacks - goose bumps. Conflicts of interests, when his daughter Ivanka, and son-in-law Jared were poking their noses when Japanese PM and Indian entrepreneurs visited the US, were rampant.

Any saving grace? Trump is actively considering to decide against going after Hillary for her email misadventures. Or so it seems.
Dave (Florida)
Why does he look like he's in severe pain, as if he's trying to pass a watermelon?
Staying on message for 2 min 37 sec must actually hurt is brain.
B. (Brooklyn)
More propaganda from Mr. Trump.

The New York Times would do well to emulate the Wall Street Journal and report on the GOP's plans to eradicate Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare and to replace them with high-deductable plans that will deliver poorer health care.

And anyone with a brain, who'd been following the last several Presidential elections and heard the debates, could have predicted that.

My cousin, who voted for Clinton, told me that if Trump lowers taxes, she'll be fine with him. Well, he'll lower the already low Federal taxes, which will cause cities and states to pick up the slack, and in fact her city and state taxes, already high, will go way up.

And she can whistle Dixie before she gets to collect Social Security.

But Trump won't tell anyone. He'll let his handlers do the dirty work.
Randé (Portland, OR)
Dictator Dump. That's the only title I'll ever bestow on the Lunacy. Journalists, Media, please do your job and do it well - investigate, uncover, do not apologize, while freedom of press still exists here. Given the Repugnant coup, I have my doubts, just as I have my doubts that we'll still have the privilege to vote the Lunacy out of office in 2020. And, if and when we do, will the Lunacy refuse to leave...
Tim Tuttle (Hoboken NJ)
I don't want to be the disgruntled Democrat who can't stop harping that HRC won the popular vote by over 2 million votes and that the EC gave Trump a wobbly and shocking path to victory. The Clinton campaign made numerous mistakes that were subsequently aided by FBI Director Comey. A better team would have won this easily. It's done and we are less for it.

But watch the video: Trump doesn't care about governing. He's about to make BILLIONS off this trade. He will soak up every global deal he can get his hands on. He won't release his taxes and he will not put his 500 businesses into a blind trust. He said as much yesterday. Sorry America, WE have all been duped. 46% of the country fell for the con. Keep an eye on the Deutsche Bank fines( $14 Bil) and the Mercer family IRS $6 billion fight. They both have Donald's ear and purse. These battles will disappear under the Trump family. Just watch....The Clintons are school children compared to this organized crime outfit. 3,600 outstanding lawsuits? Poof, gone. Ok, I'm harping...Apologies.

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we are underlings."
Southern Boy (The Volunteer State)
Very presidential. Need I say more? Thank you.
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
Ludicrous.
Jacqueline (New England)
Steven Hawking is going to have to reassess his prediction of the human race disappearing in 1000 years. Trumps roll back of every environmental protection and climate agreements will surely knock off 200 years off the Earth. But hey, in the mean time, America will be "great" sometime...maybe...perhaps....I'll get back to you.
Daedalus (Rochester, NY)
Well, it looks like the era of the gatekeeper press is over. No longer will authority speak to reporters who tell the public what authority actually meant. Poor old press! It's time to get up from the desks and do some real investigating. Look on the bright side: this is opportunity. All those dead-wood writers who've been hogging the limelight for so long are out, and a new breed of journalist can take over.
Here we go (Georgia)
and why does anyone think Celebrity Journalists could trump Trump? Off the record, NYT? are you really going to allow that privilege? What for? what's the point? Access to the cesspool?
mgaudet (Louisiana)
Why is Trump referred to as Mr. Trump, and President Obama often called just Obama? Honest question.
R Moller (New York NY)
Mr Trump has not be sworn in yet. One could call him President-Elect Trump but that is a mouthful.
Bismarck (North Dakota)
Those that do don't think a black man in the White House is worthy of respect...
sdh (u.s.)
And Hillary Clinton is just Hillary.
Roger (Michigan)
Trump will either be a dose of fresh air in Washington or, given the amount of rope he has taken, hang himself. Time will tell.
Tylinsky (NYC)
Trump is starting off extremely well. He is putting together a great cabinet and his comments on Youtube are terrific. WE need Jobs!! Make America Great Again!!! GIVE HIM A CHANCE!! you too will benefit from his work!!
Jatropha (Gainesville, FL)
Serious questions: When do you think America stopped being great? Why do you think that electing a narcissistic game show host as our chief executive will return us to greatness?

I measure the greatness of a country, in part, by the way it takes care of its most vulnerable residents. Universal healthcare is a big part of national greatness and I thank President Obama and the Democratic party for the enormous strides they have made in that direction. Nothing that Trump has done so far would suggest that he will build on that progress. We can only hope that he is limited in his efforts to dismantle it.
jkramer (Cincinnati, Ohio)
It is a great cabinet if you happen to be a white supremacist.
Cheekos (South Florida)
I wonder why he doesn't--or perhaps prefers not to--list such an important policy outline on a, for instance, Transition web site. That way, some Americans with Disabilities might be better able to understand what the President-Elect has to say.

Due to a hearing impairment, with the aid of my cochlear device, I can hear reasonably well. When it comes to understanding some forms of speech--delivered over electronic means--I don't always fully understand what is being said. But in written format, I can bypass the hyperbole, and read for myself.

Mr. Trump, don't we count?

https://thetruthoncommonsense.com
Meh (east coast)
He mocks the disabled.

Probably thinks they're losers like POWs.
Victoria Rubin (North Carolina)
Whatever. He just says whatever at any given moment. That's the track record, and why anyone would believe otherwise is mystifying. There will be too much pivoting, lies and corruption to keep up with. Pay off what you can and be ready. What's coming will be ugly.
Paul P. (Arlington VA)
YouTube in place of a press conference....Unstable Twitter Rants.....Alt-Right White Supremacist whispering in his ear.

Welcome to the Trump Version of the Presidency.

Is it too late to get W back?
VMG (NJ)
Trump can put off the press conference for just so long and he will have to face the cameras and questions. If he didn't know it before he will soon find out the being President of the US requires you to be out there alone with only your wits and experience to back you up. I'm looking forward to that event.
Barry Williams (NY)
But...why? There is no law to make him be out there. I doubt he cares about a second term, so he doesn't have to worry about the long haul. He won the election basically playing the media and catering to his base via social media, so to him his way works! For the hard stuff, he will depend on Bannon and the others to provide enough framework for him to operate while he remains the bombastic front man keeping the base on board and giving the finger to opponents. As we see with his refusal to run with a press pool, he doesn't care if the people see what he's doing and where he is. We can't impeach him for not having press conferences!
Dave (Florida)
Why a campaign commercial now?
Doesn't he realize the campaign is over?
calea (Colorado)
No.
V (Los Angeles)
It's been two weeks, Mr. Trump.

Where is your press conference?

You think you can play by your own rules. but you got 2 million less popular votes. You did win the electoral college votes, but there is a huge swath of Americans that doesn't care for you. We will hold you accountable.

Where is your press conference?

The media needs to stop being diverted by your tweet tactics. They will figure that out and start hitting you hard on your conflict of interests, your shady business dealings, your banana republic attitude towards your children, the $1 million per day it's costing Americans in New York to pay for NY City cops for your security because you refuse to use Washington D.C. as your base, your lies about keeping jobs in America, what a shyster you are in your Trump University scam. Maybe there will even be some Republicans who figure out the real treat you represent to our Republic.

The media needs to stand up to you and this off the record baloney of you summoning them to your tower and dressing them down, belittling them, should really reveal to them what a terrible person you are and what a real threat you represent to the fourth estate.

But, at the end of the day, I don't think you fully understand that you work for us, We, the People. Not the other way around.

Where is your press conference?
Barry Williams (NY)
it's not that he doesn't understand it. It is that he believes, for Donald J. Trump, that concept does not apply. Read about the words to that effect that have come out of his own mouth, if you can extrapolate their meaning which is confirmed by his actions through his whole life .
Pajaritomt (New Mexico)
Which Donald Trump are we to believe?
Dan Stackhouse (NYC)
The wisest course of action is never to believe his words. He lies over 80% of the time, impossible to know when he's telling the truth. Watch and see what he does instead, like nominating Bannon, the racist misogynist.
Svenbi (NY)
There is only one, and he is a fake.
MarkAntney (Here)
That one, Ok, that one,...Now that I think about it,..that one,... make it, that one over there.
Michael (North Carolina)
It's early, and although evidence to-date is less than encouraging to this progressive, I'm willing to give him a chance to deliver. After all, aided as he is by a GOP congress, what alternative do we have at this point? That said, it is incumbent on journalists to hold his administration and this congress to account - consistently, relentlessly, and thoroughly. If they'll do that, we'll be alright in the long run. Either we'll make progress, or it will be abundantly apparent that we aren't. A free and engaged press is perhaps the single most important characteristic of our democracy. Lose that and we lose everything. We don't have to have press conferences, we just have to have a press.
cp dukes (Oaxaca)
I remember cutting Bush II a lot of slack. Do we make the same mistake again?
Mark Thomason (Clawson, Mich)
Do Democrats now oppose jobs, support trade deals voters hate, and support lobbyists in government? Democrats support corruption?

As Bernie already said, the alternative is to work with Trump on the things Democrats support that he says he will do. Put it to the test.

Pick and choose. Stop the reflexive opposition that is worthy only of McConnell.

It is time to move on from campaign mode.
Mary (Brooklyn)
Let's put it this way...we support jobs, preferably living wage jobs that have some sustainability. We support the concept of trade, the peace that is a by-product of trading partners but not the offshoring of jobs to take advantage of lax environmental and safety regulations and exploitative cheap labor. We are wary of the corruption innate in Trump's international business dealings which he shows no signs of relinquishing. Lobbying to present the people's desires on climate/environmental protection, civil rights, small business concerns - maybe. Big corporations desiring the right to poison and plunder at will - not so much. Trump's presidency is the last experiment of tax cuts and trickle down theory. We will wait and see how it plays out.
Greg (Milwaukee)
Unemployment is at its lowest point in decades due to Democratic policies enacted by Obama. It seems unlikely that the number will be lower in 4 years, especially by "millions".

The campaign is over, but the process of people coming back to reality from campaign promises is a long and painful road. We've just begun.
Mary (Brooklyn)
One thing is for sure, Trump is being handed an economy in much much better shape than the one Obama inherited from Bush. If he can't improve on it-or at minimum maintain it, his incompetence will be quite clear.
Helen (New Jersey)
A youtube video? Seriously? I guess he couldn't do it live. He needed a format where he could do a few takes. No doubt Ivanka was standing nearby to hold his hand and reassure him that he's doing great. And forget handling any questions.

I feel sick...
Stella (MN)
The media won in the short term, because America tuned into the spectacle of Trump as a presidential candidate. But, now that Trump is president-elect, who can stomach watching him in these videos? Images, twitter rants and "nuggets of wisdom" from Trump are skin crawling and likely to cause more to turn away from the news.

Who reads or watches real news? It's not Trump supporters.

I will miss having an intelligent president who could give a speech without looking like he's being held hostage in a bad movie. Oh, I know Mr. Trump, "Not nice. Apologize!". What a dope!
Greg (Milwaukee)
For over a year, media outlets were propping up Trump and degrading Clinton to make it seem like a race between two decent candidates. They did this for ratings, because no one wanted to hear about a lopsided race between a qualified candidate and a wholly unqualified one.

Now the unqualified candidate has miraculously won, and I can't help but feel that the news media is partly (if not mostly) to blame.

I have no idea why Trump is upset with the news outlets. He has them to thank for this ugly period of American stupidity.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
The 'lock her up' and 'build that wall' crowd must be terribly disappointed today.
Monroe (new york)
Your moment has come Grey Lady. How will you meet it?
CardinalResponse (Washington, DC)
Instead of using for-profit media businesses as his primary public communication channel, he is using the free internet medium to get his message across. Why is it so painful to accept that? missed ad revenue?
DR (New England)
It's been verified that 70% of what he says are lies. Bypassing the press means that no one can call him out on these lies or question him. I have a problem with that. Why don't you?
Cyn (New Orleans, La)
He is issuing proclamations with no scrutiny of his policy details. "The devil is in the details", as they say.

There is no single human being on earth that I blindly trust to have all of the answers.
plumberb (California)
The issue is, using YouTube, he remains unchallenged by a free press. Without that challenge, his words are equivalent of a government run press spewing propaganda. As it is, many of his supporters have insulated themselves within a cocoon of phony news and phony science, and I for one, don't see them coming back to reality anytime soon.

Have we forgotten the value of a true, free press? Was Watergate really that long ago? I'm not one to use apocalyptic phrases, yet the more I resist the urge, the clearer my internal argument becomes: I truly do fear for our country.
Ruben Kincaid (Brooklyn)
What a spineless bully. Is he going to conduct his entire presidency like the Wizard of Oz?
Mark (Atl)
. I see his berating of journalists as juvenile, immature and an attempt to intimidate them with respect to future reporting.

A free and open press are essential to democracy. Trump seems to be using the Putin playbook of trying to suppress dissent.

We're only into the first twelve days and I've seen no signs that suggest Trump has changed or intends to change his ways. And as far as brining jobs back to America, how about starting with his and his daughters clothing lines both of which are made in China
Daphne philipson (new york)
Speaking on You Tube, no questions to be asked. Sounds like the modern version of Mussolini speaking from a balcony to cheering throngs.
ACEkin (Warwick, RI)
The line between policy and propaganda is getting blurrier, we now have a new concept "polipaganda." Using the social media channels allows him to bypass probing questions and continue hollering on the megaphone. At some point, "the media" will likely realize that they are still enabling his polipaganda and being pushed more and more to the side.

Clearly, anyone can communicate through any channel s/he chooses. However, without robust journalistic standards, this conversation will continue to move in the direction of propaganda. Time to reconsider the dead end road we are on.
Gordon (Michigan)
Liar in Chief, wants to control the information, the first requirement for a dictator. But in your other article on attacking press freedom, the 1st amendment, and all of his libel suits, you don't mention much about the alt-media. That vast right wing machine that cranks out propaganda, with malice aforethought, led by Rush and B-bart and all the radio rant wing empire is not held accountable by anyone.

Take back the playing field, take us back to responsible news, back when the news content was not intended to guild the bottom line. The "press" is better than the broadcast or cable "infotainment" where news is an afterthought, and only included if the news will enhance ratings.

And please, stop reporting on the Name Brand hotels, golf courses, towers, and the guilded throne room of "he who shall remain nameless". I'll try to avoid ever using the T-word again; how about you?
tomjoe9 (Lincoln)
Liar in Chief? That is Obama's title. Please find another title for our nation's new President.
VB (San Diego, CA)
I, to, intend never to use the "t" word again. I've substituted the term "Abomination" whenever I have to refer to the would-be-fuhrer.

It doesn't change what just happened, or what is looming, but at least I don't feel like I have to wash my mouth out with soap after any discussion of the current situation.
Delacroix (Toronto)
Welcome to 1984.
jroddz (NJ)
I wish it were 1984 again.
Jack (New Mexico)
What nonsense from a total idiot whose admission of settling for 25 million for one of his frauds is far more indicative of the Trump we will get. He will do a few cosmetic actions to assuage the extremely stupid people he represents. I know several tea party supporters that believe the Chinese have bought Lake Michigan; when asked how he would get it to China after showing them a map, the response was to take it in boats. Seems typical of his supporters nation wide, and how easy it will be for Trump to continue to fool them. He will take some action against immigrants, begin to build some type of wall, and talk about putting a tariff on some countries products. He will do enough to get by the 2018 elections but no more. He is not going to dismantle NATO, which would be an enormous benefit if he did so, or withdraw troops anywhere in the world. We see his kooks of retired military, but wait until we see who will be running the Military by those still in uniform. The typical Trumpism will be to take credit for something that did not happen such as saving Ford motors from moving to Mexico. There is only one way to treat Trump: resist everything he does, and continue pointing out how illegitimate his reign will be.
Sara B. (MI)
I visited Czechoslovakia forty years ago and saw loud speakers in the trees. They were for broadcasts of State TV to bombard people in the park and on the side walks about how great their leaders were. And I thought to myself, thank God we have a free press and if a leader is truly great we will know it from what he does, not what he says.
Mary (Brooklyn)
Every president in my lifetime promises jobs. Obama was stymied by obstruction, that Trump will have less of unless the GOP is serious about fiscal conservatism-which seems to only concern them when a Dem is President. I wonder what kind of jobs this man has in mind. He's against unions, against minimum wage, likely against employer provided healthcare, so I wonder if the jobs will be good jobs or subsistence jobs, temporary jobs (i.e. pipelines) or growth jobs. My feeling is that we will have a bubble of growth for a short burst, followed by another financial upset (due to those lax regulations) and a crushing realization that we've made the 1% really really rich while starving government revenue into further and further indebtedness.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
US wages are way too high, according to one of the most extravagantly overpaid people in North America.
Anthony N (NY)
The Obama administration has a very good record at creating jobs, particularly in light of the economic mess it inherited. I certainly want to see the next administration build on the foundation laid by the current one.
Rita (California)
Sounds like the standard Republican agenda. Old (and sour wine) in new bottles.

I'm sure the people of Oklahoma will enjoy Trump removing fracking regs. After all, why should California and Alaska have all the earthquakes?
FarmGirl (Maxeys, GA)
Seriously, Margo? Do you understand the ramifications of a president that won't talk to the free press? The president, any president, needs to be questioned about his/her proposals and policies, not coddled. If Trump can't "man" up to this task, he needs to resign immediately.
Miriam (Raleigh)
Sooooo. The imperial president wasn't Nixon after all. It is this guy. On you tube. With a teleprompter. Wonder when he'll bring back the guards in royal livery? He will grant Fox and Brietbart access but not anyone else. Don't cave NYT. Do your job.
Brian (Philadelphia)
Day after day after day, the thought of this man as president is a source of seemingly endless despair.
JMM. (Ballston Lake, NY)
I hear you Brian. I can only imagine what my WW II veteran father must be thinking watching this from above.
AT (Media, PA)
This video was brought to you by the Ministry of Truth.

“For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable – what then?” - 1984 George Orwell
Seems like a text book these days.
Barry Williams (NY)
Poorly educated Americans don't even know what you're talking about.

If that comment upsets anyone, realize that you must be admitting something about yourself. I accuse no one specifically with that remark.
Tony E. (Rochester, NY)
Goals are great, but the means and methods to achieve those goals are just as important because those means and methods are where opportunity is exploited by the selfish and self-serving.

In this case, Mr Trump's character would suggest personal opportunity, not public good, is the driving force.
Benvenuto (Maryland)
Attention must be paid to subversion before it becomes the norm. The NYT was diddled by a Bannonite tactic. After rushing their trolls in to post "complaints" about "coverage," Trump is now crowing that the NYT is inundated with "complaints"... so don't believe NYT coverage of the unsavory Trump. Examine where the "complaints" came from. Perhaps the paper can continue to do the in-depth reporting. The real story is about independent media being infiltrated and colonized by Bannon-Trump Inc.
Kathyinct (Fairfield County CT)
And the Mercer family -- follow the money and the data via Cambridge analytics
Benvenuto (Maryland)
Thanks for that, Kathy. Watch the p.r. operation in action on the CNN website. After giving Trump and his paid surrogates free access, unfiltered, for 18 months; after the Lewandowski "firing" scam which they went along with; after enabling the Trump coup, they are now running banner ads: "Most [Americans] say Trump will do a good job"-- 10 days after an election, not yet in power! The latest banner is that Trump has [magnanimously] waived his threat to "Lock Her Up." I wonder if they have a jeweller creating the Imperial Crown or whether one will be sent over from the Kremlin.
Samara (New York)
As Hillary said, "It takes a Village"
MarkAntney (Here)
1. I support all our POTUS, for if they fail,..so do we.
2. HowEva, I don't support (the attitudes of) folks that blatantly survive via berating others.
a. (specifically others that have less than they do), have an adult history of displaying "Bullying" manners, demeanor, attitudes.
b. And I have major difficulty in believing such character traits can effectively govern, build a consensus, formulate relationships outside their beliefs,...
3. The unemployment rate has been quite decent for sometime now.
4. The issue has evolved to be wage stagnation problem for the lower-middleclass wage earners.
5. I hope he succeeds, where 35+yrs of policies have taken us. But that would require a monumental change,..which goes back to #2.
Barry Williams (NY)
He will succeed...in doing what he needs to do to geometrically or possibly exponentially increase his own wealth and that of his cronies and, peripherally as far as he's concerned, other rich business people. The businesses that will be "re-Americanized" will be the large ones that have been making out like bandits anyway, and this will be on the backs of the middle class, who might see a slight increase in wealth and opportunity that will be minuscule compared to what the 1% will see. And it will be at the cost of lives, possibly our Constitution and our civil liberties, and the true meaning of the rule of law.

When people get that job and have to blow the money on health care because they and their children are sick from a ravaged environment, or on law suits when newly empowered businesses rip them off, we will understand what we paid for this "win". When hate speech and action becomes the norm because the Administration's and the Supreme Court's newest members will relax prohibitions and punishments against it - and gun laws are relaxed so that anyone can use their "2nd Amendment Rights" to right those wrongs, we will understand what we paid. When America becomes marginalized as a world power for the sake of our economic comfort (which will only be realized by the top 1-5%), we will understand what we paid.

I hope I'm wrong, but as someone educated as a scientist, I go by facts in evidence to form hypotheses, and so far it isn't looking good for my country.
MarkAntney (Here)
Not on your education level but I know "Bullies" and empowered ones don't have the effective traits, character, mindset,..to govern a "Free" Society.

Now if we're not a "Free" Society when this is over, yeah maybe he will succeed but how we're (seemingly) currently constructed, no.
Soquelly (France)
For every new regulation approved by Trump, two from his predecessors revoked sounds mighty dangerous. A regulation relaxing reporting requirements of corporations could come at the price of the cancelation of regulation protecting the water supplies from heavy metals and the national forests from being clear cut.
Catherine Korten (Highland Park, NJ)
I watched the video. I had the disturbing sense that the words were written for him--the same feeling I had whenever he used a teleprompter. Only the asides sounded like they belonged to him. Made me think,"He doesn't know how to do this. He's in over his head." Are we in for a puppet-presidency?
Luke G (Denver, CO)
"No puppet, no puppet. You're the puppet."
-President-elect Donald J. Trump
Barry Williams (NY)
Most President's speeches are written for them. That is, sorry to say, a lame criticism. Perhaps we got spoiled by the Obamas. We should judge those who lead us by what they do and say outside of speeches.
Kathyinct (Fairfield County CT)
Read up on the Mercer family who own him and installed Bannon and Congress to turn his campaign around. Then read about Cambridge Analytics
hunternomore (Spokane, WA)
Here's a thought. Stop reporting on him. YouTube? This is what he has devolved into? I listen to YT if I want to hear a song. Most older people that vote don't even have a computer and young people aren't going to go listen to him on YT. So who is the target audience? Can we please just stop this nonsense now and have the electoral college step in. Please???
Barry Williams (NY)
Theoretically, the Electoral College may be as corrupt as people think the rest of the government is.
Chris I (Long Island)
He should have a real press conference. He hasn't had one since he became the president-elect. What is he afraid of? Questions?
Paul P. (Arlington VA)
Trump's last Press Conference was over 100 days ago.

Trump's afraid of the press.
Barry Williams (NY)
He hated having to submit to them during his campaign. Now that he's President, he doesn't think he has to anymore.

Like any dictator, he believes the people only need to know what he wants them to know. As we saw during his whole life and his campaign, so should we be surprised?
Puzzaddisi (New Jersey)
Correct... he is afraid of questions... he is afraid of being exposed for what he is... a know-nothing incompetent unqualified buffoon unfit for the presidency... so much easier to just spit out your venom and lies with no countering in person from anybody....
Chuck W. (San Antonio)
So it appears that we will have policy statements and executive orders via social media. I wonder how he will communicate with leaders of Congress, Twitter at 2AM? It is going to be an interesting four years.
Jennifer (Chicago, IL)
The hubris of this man. Please recall when President Obama, during his transition, made a video to address (read: reassure) the American public of his leadership plans? I can't. This is white (male ) privilege personified. Yet, Obama was taken to task for his use of teleprompters among many other nitpicking complaints during his terms. Sigh.

So ladies and gents, whether you voted for him or not, expect this man to be lead from social media. Wouldn't be surprised if he gave his State of the Union address on Snapchat.
NM (NY)
Actions speak louder than words. Trump pledges to work for job creation, but he has busied himself working for his own business interests abroad, as the President-elect. He promises to work for everyone, but he is looking at divisive figures like Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani. He assures us that things are going very efficiently, but he made time to have twitter feuds over "Hamilton" and "SNL."
No, Mr. Trump, your PR bit does not erase what is in front of us.
Jacqueline (New England)
NYT....Thank you for having the guts to tell Trump "nothing is off the record" so he can't spin it to his propaganda devices. I have newspapers from 1776. The press didn't back down then and they shouldn't back down now from an overbearing proxy king like Trump. Everything is "on the record". It is the ONLY way to hold him accountable.
pete (new york)
How do you explian the lies in the media? Remember Hillary has a 98% chance of winning. Fabrication of the news to back their choice. No honesty No integrity in the media.
Kristine (Westmont, Ill.)
I hope Trump goes slow on backing out of these trade deals. Manufacturing supply chains have become more like a worldwide supply web. For the US to be a prominent player in the worldwide supply web, it must:
Negotiate and be part of multinational trading systems. Hotels and golf courses and the like might be amenable to bilateral trade deals, but manufacturing is now global.
Raise it's own game. Workers must upgrade our knowledge, skills and commitment to compete, and investors must invest more in US-based R&D and production, and in their US workforce.
Make the future work in the US. Forget about gutting the EPA, and all of the 'clean coal' baloney. Breathable air and drinkable water are things about the US that other countries admire. If the US is a big market for technologies of the future, those technologies and industries will thrive here.
Jim Ellsworth (Charlottesville, VA)
These are frustrating times for journalists as well as being uncertain times for Americans. With the too-early passing of Gwen Ifel where can we find frank and fair and informed reportage? Where is the next Walter Cronkite? Too much of even respectable journalism has the air of a food-fight among ego-centric rather than news-centric persons. Who would hold a press conference with this group?

I believe that Mr. Trump is justified in reaching out directly to the people who elected him rather than risk the 'filtratlion' our media provided to his candidacy during the election process. I did not see Mr. Trump get 'straight' reporting during this election cycle. Too much attention seemed to be given to his 'Reality Star' persona. Reporters did not seem to find a way to get any deeper into this candidate and where he would lead us. This video shows that with President Trump, America elected a team of people rather than a single galvanizing presence. I say 'Thanks' for that. Seeing Mr. Trump stay on-message, even a scripted message is reassuring.
KALB22 (NC)
But the people didn't elect him, the Electoral College did. Ms. Clinton won the people's vote by 1.7 million votes. He is not justified in his approach to the presidency and shutting down access. He is totally filtering his interactions with us by closing himself off to questioning.
Hey Joe (Somewhere In The US)
I agree. This article describes the video as an "infomercial" - when that is hardly the case.
Thad (Texas)
Much of that "filtration" was fact checking, which Mr. Trump needed very badly.
Margo (Atlanta)
If only there had been a more civil tone used in the press over the past year we could now have better chances of interviews and frank discussions.
I hope the powers that be in the NYT internal hierarchy are re-thinking some of their policy.
Here we go (Georgia)
Civil tone? you are really joking. The TV media gave this uncivil man a bully pulpit to voice all his vulgarities and all you noticed was the belated reaction from the press?
rosa (ca)
I hope they are digging into his 500 corporations.
Barry Williams (NY)
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When someone gets outed by the press on questionable activities and views, and questioned vigorously about it, that person's supporters will see that as lack of civility. Margo, it is the JOB of a free press to be vigorous in questioning such things. I have yet to see evidence of any major news outlet generally being uncivil to Trump. You might complain about unfairness because you perceive (eye of the beholder again) that the media went after Trump more than Clinton (but to be fair, during the campaign Trump continually provided more to go after than her), but that is different from civility or lack thereof.
Crohy (Boston)
Is Trump so terrified of the press as to hide behind a scrim of twitter, YouTube videos, and last minute cancellations?
Bob (Another GOP Draft Dodger 'N Cheif)
He is a coward.
This can't be news to you.
Tylinsky (NYC)
No, I dont believe so. I agree, however, that he does not need the bias media. He can use youtube and other channels of communication to speak to THE PEOPLE! No need for the NYT, CNN, FOX, etc.
RLW (Chicago)
YES, Trump must be afraid of the "Mainstream Press", at least what's left of it. He is using "social media" the way FDR used his "Fireside chats" to communicate directly with the "People". Though there is no filter or scrutiny at the moment he communicates on-line the "media" can still scrutinize and catch the lies. Will the mainstream media finally do the job they didn't do during the campaign that allowed a pathologic liar to become president-elect? We can't really fault the press however lax they were in challenging Trump's lies. The American electorate are mostly to blame for believing what most knew was pure bull s--t. Maybe we will all be surprised and Trump will be a great leader. Rome had Nero and Caligula and survived for long thereafter, America now has Trump. Will we survive him?
Kvetch (Maine)
Everyday, every self respecting media organization should submit a request to the transition team and then the Trump White House, for his tax returns, audit or no audit. Trump's withholding of his returns during the election was a slap in the face of every American and the media must not let this go unchallenged. Since the tax returns may be the only documents that may shed light on the Trump Organization's business dealings while he is president, there can be no concession on this. It may be the only tool we have to act as a check on the near certain self-dealing that will occur in the next four years.
CJ (New York)
Taxes are an Imperative!...Without taxes we can not follow the many conflicts of interest.
The Trump kids, who I am convinced are clones of their father should be
totally in or totally out of government.
Blind trust period..........
the Consumer Protection Board should be in on this......
cp dukes (Oaxaca)
Where is Wikileaks when you need them?
msf (NYC)
How about we all put our taxes in escrow + do not pay until he does? Sort of a pedestrian way to show him the Kantian Categorical Imperative (Act according to that maxim whereby your deeds will be good if applied to all of society)
Padman (Boston)
"Reading from a script and looking into a camera, he steered clear of his most inflammatory campaign promises to deport immigrants and track Muslims and his pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act."
Trump is going to break many of his campaign promises, he is not going to follow through building a wall, deport all illegal immigrants, ban Muslims or repeal Obama care entirely. None of those ideas are realistic or workable. those are outrageous policies. His supporters knew very well that those were just campaign promises. Even trump did not have any idea or clue how how was going to accomplish those goals, He himself contradicted many of those ideas.Neither his supporters cared to ask him how he was going to accomplish those goals. They just voted blindly and they did not care either, their only aim was to express their anger and hatred towards minorities and immigrants and Donald Trump was the medium to do that and they won.
Barry Williams (NY)
The only promises he cares about are the ones that will line his own pockets and those of his children. His cronies, too, as long as they stay loyal, but he'll throw them under the bus too if necessary. Any good that comes from this will be purely by accident.
Lucy (NYC)
So the propaganda campaign begins. There is nothing normal happening here. Will the press and reporters fold to the tactics of intimidation now being unleashed against them and join the regime?
jsb (Texas)
The best thing about YouTube is that you don't have to answer questions from those pesky reporters about your conflicts of interest, why your unelected daughter was in a meeting with a foreign leader, specifically how you're going to accomplish 'making America great,' or why you have white supremacists in your cabinet.

American people, refuse to accept a YouTube president.
tk (Canada)
For a man who supposedly received an Ivy league education and is well travelled Trump comes across a babbling ignoramus with a limited vocabulary. He would give an address where there is no opportunity to question him.

The fact Trump met with the American media yesterday to whine about "unfair coverage" should send chills down the spine of Americans. The man has the mentality of a child.

Trump won the presidency because he preyed on the fears and prejudices of desperate people. He promised to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US and he told Appalachia he would revive the coal mining industry. He can do neither. You cannot turn the clock back on innovation and technology. If Trump were serious and he cared about these workers he would have told them the truth. He would have proposed comprehensive job and education programs to ensure those left behind/displaced could transition into new jobs.

The singlest biggest thing the US can do to improve the life of millions is to ensure full and equal access to healthcare for all citizens.

Trump will use the office of the presidency to enact policies which enrich himself. He pulled off the biggest con of his life. What is even sadder is half the American populace voted for him.
Virginia (Pennsylvania)
I agree, he is surprisingly poorly educated. I wonder if he has ADD? Nearly 2 million more people voted for the other person. He knows it, too.

I won't listen to YouTube videos from this supposed president- he must engage with the Fourth Estate. But, what would anyone expect from a man who espouses grabbing women by the "pu***," wishes to prohibit freedom of religion, disparages Gold Star parents, mocks disabled journalists, hangs with the Stalinesque Putin, thinks that entire nationalities are rapists, is setting up his family for an illicit non-blinded money grab, and who wants to put a Breitbart anti-anything-not-a-privileged-white-male supremacist clown in the White House?

I am thankful that the formerly publicly quasi-pornographic wife won't be in our nation's beautiful White House- perhaps she at least vaguely realizes how impossibly far over both of their heads this thing is? The contrast with the highly educated and erudite Mrs. Obama is more than anyone could take.

YouTube? He is afraid of being challenged. His Hamilton remarks and his dressing down the press yesterday should induce terror in our hearts as he tries to control his clueless message. I believe that he has no idea how much he does not know. I already see the press legitimizing.

He will be the most negatively disruptive President of all time. I continue to be apoplectic.

Give him a chance? Who makes fun of disabled people and Gold Star families?
de Tuinsma (Los Angeles)
More reliance on shale energy and coal? Lord help us.
KenoInStereo (Western Hemisphere)
How can any reasonable person take anything that Mr. Trump has to say seriously? How can any reasonable person believe that Mr. Trump truly wants a better America for ALL Americans? Mr. Trump has the self-proclaimed leader of the alt-right movement as his chief advisor! Hello? The alt-right is merely a clean-cut version of white supremacy, making themselves more palatable and photogenic for a wider audience. And this is supposed to make America great again? This is only going to lead to more hate crimes, more retaliation, more protesting and more division. This is truly a sad time for America.
JWMathews (Sarasota, FL)
Hold a press conference and stop with the so-called "social media". You are an adult, but who am I kidding, of course he isn't. Jobs do not appear out of thin air and nor can we go back to yesterday's economy. If we could, someone would be making whalebone corsets.

Disgusting behavior, inability to tell the truth, self-centered and, the worst, an inability to admit a mistake. Hopefully, his own party will call him to task, but they don't hold much hope either as they have done nothing for the last six years but obstruct, lie and tarnish a perfectly good man and his family.
DC Photographer (DC)
Trump is scared of facing the media and having to answer unscripted questions on his feet. To the media, if you don't your job in the next two months, and maintain an adversarial relationship with Trump, you will get used again, and fail to deliver to the public what is needed: facts and truth.
Migrant (Florida)
Using social media to communicate with the country is a great way to get young people interested in politics. If anything important happens, your ten-year-old will be the first one to know.

President Snapchat may be on to something here.
alan Brown (new york, NY)
Trump elected to highlight an economic agenda for his first video. That's what got him elected. There will surely follow more substance on how this will be accomplished and more attention to other issues he has already cited for early action such as Obamacare, executive actions to eliminate President Obama's executive actions. Meanwhile the Democratic party ( Senator Schumer and Sanders excepted) seem fixated on the Alt-right. This is not a phantom but really a fringe like the Alt-left who promote violent revolution. The Republicans did not carry Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa, not to mention Florida and North Carolina because of an outpouring of support from the Alt-right. Democrats need a laser focus on economic unrest in all races and regions of the nation. New leaders are needed, not the same old tired faces without a fresh message. Attacking Trump non-stop is not a message, at least not one that can regain the House, Senate and White House.
John Doe (Anytown)
No, Trump did not outline plans for his first hundred days of presidency.
Trump read a prepared speech that someone else wrote.
The content of that speech, means nothing to Trump.

Mike Pence will be responsible for all Domestic Policy decisions.
Pence will be responsible for all Foreign Policy decisions.

Trump will be off being very busy, making America great again. (And selling Trump merchandise.)
Joanna Gilbert (Wellesley, MA)
Yes, and I pledge to single handedly make my extended family's entire Thanksgiving dinner without taking a single sip of wine. The proof will be in the pudding, pun intended. Clearly there is no way that my dinner is going to happen like that, just like his pledge won't.

I'm trying to be patient and give Mr. Trump time but the absolute displays of the last several weeks do not inspire my confidence. Is his first step to convince all our allies to swap in new ambassadors to make all new trade alliances and therefore new jobs for all? Possibly he and Nigel have a "top secret" plan?
cjhsa (Michigan)
It is pretty much impossible to disagree with anything he says on that video, unless you are part of the problem and not in the asset column. And, those of us who supported him knowing A. He could defeat Hillary and B. He would repeal Obamacare, are going to hold him to B.
rosa (ca)
Then how is it that Clinton has won the vote?
Here we go (Georgia)
cjhsa: Keep laughing! You're going to need it as you "hold him to [his promises].
Stella (MN)
Trump is that very rare, presidential-elect coward, who is too afraid to address a room full of inquiring intelligent journalists. He's not good at thinking on his feet, or thinking, period. The GOP hasn't been able to come up with an alternate health insurance system to Obamacare. I don't think Trump's added brain power is going to boost their chances.
Muddlerminnow (Chicago)
Perhaps predictably, there are no subtitles on the video so deaf and hearing impaired people can have access to the content. Not that Mr. Trump has a track record of respecting the disabled. I can only hope the Department of Justice will ensure that the Trump Administration complies with the Americans With Disability Act--few things will please me more than the lawsuits titled "The United States of America v. Donald Trump".
MHR (Putney, Vermont)
Trump is too much of a coward to face the press and respond to real questions. It's time to delete fake news youtube! Trump, and his entire family, should be indicted for corruption.
BobNY (NYC)
This column's editorializing of the video clearly illustrates why Mr. Trump is circumventing the established media outlets. This article skews and maligns almost every word of Mr. Trump.

It is not just a video but a "informercial-style video", which is absurd as there is absolutely no similarity

His words were not merely read from a script but rather he delivered "highly-scripted".

As to whether Mr. Trump would be able to negotiate bi-lateral trade deals the writers says that this coming to pass will be "in the eyes of the beholder" ...I don't even know what to say to this one

The authors are also unhappy that this one particular message did not include items that they seem to be demanding as having been necessarily included when they write the "most interesting thing about the video was what he did not say...",

Is this an example of what is coming as a result of Arthur Sulzberger's letter to readers stating a commitment to remove bias from reporting at the NYT.?

BTW, this is not my first complaint of this note. The NYT staff has previously deemed that they should not be posted
JMM. (Ballston Lake, NY)
Then why not hold a live press conference and let the public hear the questions and his answers unfiltered? The man made a lot of promises in the last 18 months and he is being sworn in in less than 2 months. Grow up.
Anne P. (Long Island, NY)
To the contrary, the only story that matters here is not what Trump read off his prepared script but his refusal to participate in the traditional press conference and his fascist attempt to YouTube a one-way communication, thereby sidesteppig his responsibility as POTUS-elect to respond to legitimate questioning and oversight from our free press. This is unprecedented in American history and should be a red flag for all American citizens no matter who they voted for. History is our guide.
Mike (San Diego)
Trump won't be President long enough to create many jobs. Eight of 44 Presidents have died in office, five others have had major health problems while President, and one has resigned. Two faced impeachment.Trump is a very likely target for removal from office by one or more of these means. His age,his lack of exercise, his angry nature, and the pressures of the Presidency are likely to result in his physical decline. His conflict-ridden business dealings which he won't put into a blind trust will open him up to congressional and possibly criminal scrutiny
Jennifer (Chicago)
Perhaps true, but in this case I will be praying for his health. I don't want Pence to be our President.
Barry Williams (NY)
If you're depending on that to save us...well, it might happen too late. A President can put us on any of a number of one way tracks to Hell.
Richard (New York)
The traditional media took a large risk by pushing Hillary so relentlessly, first steam rolling Sanders, then assuring all that Hillary was '86%' certain to win. Their credibility is shot, and now they are going to find themselves completely marginalised, with little if any ability to affect policy. Objectivity, once squandered, will be impossible to regain.
MarkAntney (Here)
How has media affected policy in the (recent) past?
Barry Williams (NY)
The press never affects policy, not directly. It is supposed to inform the People so that they can affect policy. This election polarized people so much that many saw any story from the press that exposed troubling facts or inconsistencies about their favorite candidate as an unfair, uncivil attack.

In my experience, those who complain most loudly and vehemently about that the mere exposure of troubling information is unfair and slanted usually know, consciously or subconsciously, that the troubling information is probably true and they refuse to face it because of what it says about their willingness to overlook the facts.
Dynamo (Somewhere)
It's almost like he said those thing on the campaign trail just to get elected!
Joe (Yohka)
Note that the "track Muslims" comments that he has made have been amplified and spun out of control by media. The US, like nearly all countries, records visitors who enter. The National Security Entry-Exit Registration System established after 9/11, put extra emphasis on adult males from "high risk" for countries. Those countries included places from which the 9/11 terrorists originated. The system more closely kept track of such visitors. Trump has never suggested a "registry" for Muslim Americans, and the word registry has been spun out of control to sow fear and resentment. Yes, we track visitors already, and yes the government can legally tighten visitor oversight.
MarkAntney (Here)
So he was only repeating what was already being done?

He didn't know it was being done in advance?
Barry Williams (NY)
So why does he harp on tracking Muslims as if it isn't being done? Either he wants to take credit for it, because many Americans don't know about it...or he has something more than mere tracking of visitors in mind.

Look at the history of his cabinet picks and candidates. People okay with the Japanese internment camps of WW II, for example. Hmmm.
Sam Tanner (Kentucky)
Trump is approaching his new job in a cowardly fashion. He hides behind social media while refusing to face questions and scrutiny. It is odd, or perhaps it is the bully factor, that one that talks so tough is also afraid to defend his own words in a press conference.
Jacqueline (New England)
The fear comes from not having a clue about what he is talking about. He is more a press secretary than a president. The press will never get details because he doesn't have a clue how anything in government works other than making donations to politicians for tax breaks.
Al Galli (Hobe Sound FL)
And exactly how many press conferences has Obama held where reporters were able to question him? In eight years, very few and far fewer than his predecessors
DR (New England)
Al Galli - You might find this interesting.

You also might want to check your facts before you post something.
Petey tonei (Ma)
He gets it. Our kids get their news on social media, YouTube videos going viral feed into these news portals. Trump realizes convention media is not going to reach the future of this country. Just like Bernie who got zero press coverage and his supporters livestreamed his rallies and speeches to as many as 11 million viewers simultaneously. These supporters didn't care that the media outlets like NYT did not carry Bernie's messages, yet his word got through far and wide, to distant lands. Majority of democrats abroad voted for Bernie in the primaries. That proved that the liberal media hijacked by Hillary cult like supporters had zero influence on those who wanted the Democratic Party to change course, who wanted to reject status quo.
Rita (California)
Apparently many Sanders' supporters cared about the lack of coverage because they are still harping on it.

Maybe this is their way of avoiding the worrying news about what Trump, the President-elect is doing?
PS (Massachusetts)
Your celebration of such use of media is misguided. Older news sources, at the very least, are vetted to some degree. Were you paying attention to the NYT on fake news articles? How are young people going to learn to sift through what is "real" on places youtube vs what is fabrication, propaganda. If we get our news that way, then we can believe nothing. Direct lies don't make them any less lies.
Mayda (NYC)
Bernie Sanders' campaign was covered extensively by all media -- traditional and otherwise, speaking as someone who does not use social media. He was interviewed and handled with the utmost respect by all journalists.
Jim Kardas (Manchester, Vermontt)
It will be interesting to see how Mr. Trump's vow to fight corruption will play out if he does not build a wall to separate his presidential duties, obligations and responsibilities from his business interests.
Tom Bowman (NY)
Shades of George Orwell's "1984"! I think we need a press conference with questions asked!
Danielle Doyle (Louisville, OH)
One of the first things dictators do is try to control the media. Be vigilant! I fear this is just the beginning of bad things to come.
AC (Minneapolis)
With every passing day Trump comes off as a third world dictator. God help us.
PS (Massachusetts)
I was, for a split second, tempted to think this was kind of cool, the big guy talking to the little people directly. But honestly, it's freakishly Big Brother. (Who knew that when revealed, Big Brother would look like a character from the Capitol on Hunger Games?) All those soothing lies. Do people really think Trump is in his bedroom, talking to his computer, without a script, make up artists, camera crew? It IS propaganda, fed to the masses through their great feeding trough - the internet. Trump doesn't want to go to traditional news sources because they actually ask questions. Well, I have been teaching my students that you can't use YouTube as a valid source, so nothing changed there.
NM (NY)
And to think that Trump mocked President Obama for using a teleprompter! Trump has to read someone else's script just for a brief PR bit assuring us he is serious.
TN in NC (North Carolina)
YouTube is an easy way for Trump to bypass the media, which will not relate unaltered his unique patter that conned 60 million Americans into voting for him, thinking he'll do anything that does not serve his own financial and narcissistic interests.

Meanwhile, he and other billionaires will attempt to muzzle the free press with spurious libel lawsuits that will cause editors to self-censor or risk their organization's financial viability. He will appoint sympathetic Supreme Court justices so that the last recourse is also, um, rigged.

Great start to what promises to be a pitched battle for what American values actually are. It's hard to have faith that the Constitution will be sufficient protection from this onslaught of oligarchs, but what choice do we have?
nymom (New York)
...and the story below this article:

"Trump cancels meeting with the Times".

This video is propaganda.
This approach is fascist.

Our democracy is at stake and he must be called out. Now.
Call him out!!!
Fred (NJ)
Trump is incapable of appearing before reporters who will insist on details or dare to point out lies and distortions. So we can expect four years of scripted YouTube infotainment instead of press conferences. By the way, if you Google "how to remove lies from YouTube" it changes the search to "how to remove lice from YouTube."
SR (Bronx, NY)
"Others appear to be overblown political hyperbole, like his promise in the video to “cancel job-killing restrictions on the production of American energy — including shale energy and clean coal — creating many millions of high-paying jobs.”"

I'm not sure what is worse: that that sounds like "overblown political hyperbole", or that Trump and the anti-planet GOP now have these existentially dangerous acts within easy reach and thus not so overblown at all.
Jonathan Schwartz (SF, CA)
To everyone in America who voted for Trump, take stock of what promises he has made over the past 18 months and come back in 4 years to see what actually transpires (I urge the NYT to do the same). A few of these promises include:

- Withdraw from TPP and renegotiate better trade deals
- Dismantle the EPA and remove "job-killing" legislation
- Drop out of Paris climate accord
- Build a wall across our Southern border and have Mexico pay for it
- Impose a ban on Muslims entering this country
- Kick out all illegal immigrants currently in this country
- Spend $1T on infrastructure projects
- Create 25M jobs over 10 years and grow economy 4% per year
- Repeal Obamacare (while providing insurance to the 20 million people who gained insurance through Obamacare, keeping the pre-existing condition provision, and at the same time, making health care more affordable)
- Defeat ISIS
- Reduce violence in inner cities
- Lower taxes for all corporations and individuals
and finally... Trump will release his tax returns when the IRS has completed its audit

If he doesn't fulfill his promises, who will you blame? Will Trump still be the savior he claims to be?
Robert (Philadelphia)
change "come back in 4 years" to "come back in 2 years". Democrats traditionally do not turn out for midyear elections. There are a number of Democratic Senate seats up for election at the midterm in 2018. If you want to strike back for the reasons you list, get out the vote for 2018. Hold your nose and vote for Democrats.

Be there.
Mayda (NYC)
Also, importantly, we must never forget the way he behaved during the campaign and before, as the "birther" who then blamed it on the Clintons. We must never allow that degree of character assassination, abject lying and bullying to be normalized.

Do not forget, whatever "tone" he uses now, who he is.
Joe M (Sausalito)
Tweeter and Youtube? Those are Presidential comunications? Can one of Trump's acolytes please jump in here and justify his aversion to Press Conferences?

I smell cowardice. Trump doesn't know what he doesn't know, but he does know that an actual Press Conference would reveal that he is in way over his depth. Tweets and infomercials avoid Reporter's inconvenient questions.

Reading Steve's Bannon's words off of a Teleprompter. What a pathetic. empty suit.
Dennis Sullivan (NYC)
Softer tone? I think leaving things out he in no way disavows while calling for wholesale deregulation hardly constitutes a softening. The phony jobs promise is straight out of Steve Bannon's playbook. Kellyanne Conway's promises of diversity in staffing is smoke and mirrors. And the cancellation of the Times meeting is pure manipulation.
JB (Chicago)
If does the things he said he will do on the video, and drops the controversial stuff he campaigned on, he will have a 70+ percent approval rating and win 40 states in 2020. Maybe they will even put him in on Mount Rushmore, though it is unclear whether anyone could carve a stone version of that hair.
anonymous (nyc)
remember when republicans used to say govt doesn't create wealth and jobs, the private sector does? Ah, but trump is a populist with blind faith himself...not a republican. I can't wait to watch all this play out.
Leslie Duval (New Jersey)
..."more inclusive tone"? He hired a racist/bigot now with a door down the hall from the Oval Room, giving likeminded hate groups national TV time. Instead of squelching hate, Trump has given them a voice. It does not matter what his YouTube speech may lead viewers to believe. The reality comes from his actions and we see where that is going....

BREAKING NEWS: Donald Trump’s detailed economic and environmental plan

After years spent tilting at windmills, Don vows to bring them back to America’s landscape to grind grains. “This will create badly needed jobs all over the country, that were lost decades ago due to automation. We firmly believe that we will provide opportunities for good, hard-working Americans to turn the grinding wheels themselves because, as everyone knows, the wind ain’t blowing all the time.” A senior economic advisor, Sancho Panza, criticized his plan and suggested that providing green energy would be a better use of windmills - especially in the context of global warming - but he was quickly deported to Mexico. (He also faces a lifetime bar from working for American interests, due to his lobbying ties to China.)

Update:
Rich white supremacists rumored to endorse the plan, according to people familiar with the transition process (they were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the matter publicly). “Don is keeping his promises to the American people. We see a clear future where our friends and us own windmills and make grinding wheels to sell organic flour. America is becoming great again.” The president-elect office could not be reached for comment on twitter.

Couldn't get past the headline. YouTube? And won't take questions from journalists? YouTube as the Roman balcony of our day.
fred02138 (Cambridge, MA)
When Trump says he'll lift restrictions on energy production, he means he'll end environmental regulations on the extraction of fossil fuels. Lowering the cost of producing coal, oil, and natural gas further distorts a market skewed by the externalities of burning fossil fuels.

Increased fossil-fuel production is a dead-end policy. If Trump wants to show true leadership and vision, he should embrace the transition to non-carbon fuels immediately. That is the best course for both the climate and the economy.
Joyce Perocchi (South Carolina)
In 1984, George Orwell described a dystopian society where the leader, Big Brother, posted video addresses which were broadcasted to every person. It was unclear whether he even really existed. Yes, President Obama used social media. He also had press conferences, gave interviews to journalists, and was subject to vociferous questioning about every thing he did. Are we justifying this behavior? Should we all be getting prepared for the video addresses of our very own Big Brother?
to make waves (Charlotte)
Obama did those, yes ... when he was President.

Trump can be compared or contrasted to Obama after the end of January. Cut him some slack.

Obama was rarely, over eight years. subject to anything vociferous from the press. Largely, he was given a pass for nearly everything, and we justified that behavior out of courtesy for the office and, frankly, the uniqueness of the Obama Presidency.

Trump has already been shown virtually no respect, and he hasn't taken the oath.
Ruskin (Buffalo, NY)
This is an absurd comparison - reference to 1984 makes no sense - in the novel the proles have no other choice than Bib Bro. When President Trump shuts down NBC and CBS and ABC (he may well shut down PBS and NPR, though) then you can start to worry. This id NOT Turkey!

Ari Fleischer interprets and you print it? More partisanship from a person who needs work for his enterprise. Trump continues to mislead and misdirect and he hasn't been sworn in. Inept appointees will be followed by misguided policies. He has no ideas and no ideals. What will his followers get? A Supreme Court that will restrict individual liberties, bad air and opportunities to buy Trump goods on the Home Shopping Newwork. Bahhhhhh. Bahhhhhh. Bahhhhhhhh.
Doris (Chicago)
Do not EVER show me and the rest of America a video of Trump. Why can't he speak in person? Why is the media making more exceptions with Trump than they have ever done? No. I do not except this as normal and never will.
Margo (Atlanta)
You are serious?
moosemaps (Vermont)
Trump on youtube speaking of the "homeland," Ari Fleisher adding his two cents. Ugh. It is not fascinating, just sad as can be, scary too. I am sure Trump will be a font of wisdom and maturity when he visits the Times, just like always.
Svenbi (NY)
Up next: State of the Union address on his sponsor buddy's Thiel facebook(c) account.....To all media: avoid reportage of his nonsense on youtube, twitter, etc., let him sulk in his own sauce of being ignored.
agnes (ma)
Providing presidential elect updates via YouTube is straight out of 1984...or the Wizard of Oz.
Larry Dickman (Des Moines, Iowa)
Those who would counter Mr. Trump should try to understand his appeal first, rather than looking for causes of his success outside the man (demographics, lack of education, racism, etc.).
to make waves (Charlotte)
Media could meet Trump halfway if they sought a healing of American polarization. As if dogging him for everything he says and does isn't sufficient, this scales a new low in dogging him for not mentioning other issues.

After jeering him in such a juvenile fashion all year long, the press can hardly be surprised they're not on his A-list of pals.

The "new traditionalism" you created so you can jump on him for doing things his way is bewildering. If you want change, reform, American job safety and ridding DC of vested interests, then this could be the best opportunity in our lifetimes for getting those underway.
William Rodham (Hope)
Nice!
Trump bypasses hysterical leftist communist media - issues statements directly to America!
How refreshing.
Cue liberal media hypocrite outrage...
Sara B. (MI)
It's as refreshing as a trip to the Soviet Union would be. Or rather, make that chilling.
C. Holmes (Rancho Mirage, CA)
So you are happy with a president who takes no questions, offers no explanations and communicates like a spoiled teenager?
Sharon (Schenectady NY)
Two and a half minutes - but where's the beef? Every pol in America says that job creation is a top priority - so HOW is he planning on doing this? If there is no one to ask questions, he doesn't have to say.
nymom (New York)
"Trump hints at a creating fascist government by castigating press then releasing video with no questions allowed".

There, fixed your headline for you.

Press: please do your job and hold this man accountable.
We have a 1st Amendment for a reason. Our presidency is not a dictatorship. Where are our press conferences where questions and concerns from We the People are heard?

Between this and his bullying of the news networks yesterday, he is clearly giving our 1st Amendment the finger and this must be called out!
AB (Mt Laurel, NJ)
Thank you NYMOM - you couldn't have said it better.
HANK (Newark, DE)
But when Republicans own the other two branches of government, they have a green light and all the constitutional tools they need right up to the next general election to essentially terminate this constitutional republic.
Geoffrey Thornton (Washington DC)
Trump is very clever, he never makes himself available to answer questions.
*How will be bring back coal mining jobs?
*Whats his plan to defeat ISIS?
*Won't cutting taxes and spending $1Trillion increase the deficit and debt?
*What will increased coal consumption due to the air and environment?

If a sucker is born every minute, Trump has cornered the market.
Allen82 (Mississippi)
A YouTube Video. Good-bye press conferences where he has to deal with intelligent people asking him to account to the public.

Instead the media falls for the "play" to visit him, behind closed doors, and then Breitbart and Drudge run "stories" about how he cowed the media.

When will you ever learn? Where are the stories of his job creation magic? His tax returns? The fraud perpetrated in the name of Trump University? His pay for play presidency?
jroddz (NJ)
He's not even President yet. We still have the failing Obama doing nothing.
g (ny)
Inclusive tone? How about delusionary tone. His ideas are fantasy. Coal jobs and steel jobs aren't coming back. Unregulated fracking is a nightmare waiting to happen. Which regulations are so un-important that he needs to get rid of them? The seatbelt law perhaps? Clean Air/Water? Vaccination before hospital workers care for patients?

No mention of the rise in hate crimes. No disavowal of the "Alt-right" (aka white nationialists/neo nazis).

I had a moment's hope after the election that he would appoint sane responsible people to steward the country. His staff picks disabused me of that notion. This man does not want to lead the US, he wants to rule his own fiefdom. Four years of Toupees for all! Let's hope he gets bored/scared once he actually has to do real work and quits. Pence is a nasty little zealot but at least he's not an unpredictable toddler.
Barry Williams (NY)
He mentioned the hate crimes. He said "stop it".

Problem solved.
KV (NJ)
I'm still waiting to wake up from this nightmare.
essgordon (NY, NY)
Unfortunately, you're going to be well-rested.
Indiana Pearl (Austin, TX)
I would never watch this appalling man.
Mary Ann Donahue (NYS)
I'll never watch him on YouTube either IP.
Let's be candid about this. Trump would not be able to handle a conventional press conference and if the media kowtows to him on this we as a country are going to be even more lost than we are.
Allan Price (Kamloops, B.C.)
Me too. I turn him off whenever he speaks. I'll get my information from other sources than his lying mouth.
Randé (Portland, OR)
He is an insult to the eyes, to the brain, and to the soul. An embarrassment at the very least. Goal 1: ignore this Lunatic and his Lunatic team - what passes here now as 'leadership.' Goal 2: find my daily information via competent media (global) - and so happy I can read various European languages.
tony (wv)
I'm a skeptical citizen and I wan't to know what he's going to do about: 1) reducing greenhouse gases 2) protecting the oceans and aquifers from oil spills 3) getting Americans (especially wealthy dodgers like himself) to pay their taxes while closing offshore tax havens 4) business men of his ilk who export jobs to lower their labor costs 5) reducing income inequality, and not with only a small raise in the minimum wage.
Everyone? Will he work with those millions and millions of us who have these concerns?
bea durand (us)
Speaking of taxes, will we ever see Trump's tax returns? Come on people, insists that Trump show the citizens of the US what his past business dealings were and with whom. Stop giving him a pass. We have the right to know.
Margo (Atlanta)
Bea, we have no "right" to see a private citizens tax return.
Frankly, after having one leaked by the august NYT, why should any more be revealed?
Would you do the same?
faceless critic (new joisey)
@Tony: In answer to your questions:

1) nothing. 2) nothing. 3) nothing. 4) nothing. 5) nothing.

Nothing to see here. Move along.
Al Galli (Hobe Sound FL)
"Others appear to be overblown political hyperbole, like his promise in the video to “cancel job-killing restrictions on the production of American energy — including shale energy and clean coal — creating many millions of high-paying jobs.”
This is editorializing within a news story and demonstrates reasons why the press is held in so little regard. We have no reason to believe that the reporters have a better grasp on things than Mr Trump. They have moved into the arena of speculation and then try to pass it off as news with the complicit help of the editor.
The American Taxpayer (Cincinnati)
Good to see that the NYT still doesn't get it.
Peter (Cambridge, MA)
Shame on reporters for being skeptical about something Trump says when it flies in the face of reality! Their job is just to report uncritically what the man says, no matter how fanciful. That's what the press is supposed to do in this new version of the US.
Richard Gordon (Toronto)
I encourage you to look into Mr. Trump's background. It is clear that you haven't. Mr. Trump has a pattern of hyperbole and deceit and abusive business practices that stretches all the way through his career as a businessman. This is not editorializing, these are facts upon which you would be wise to base your judgement upon.
pete (new york)
I love that Mr. Trump uses YouTube and other social media outlets to communicate directly with the world. Best of luck Mr. Trump we are all counting on you.
Stella (MN)
"Best of luck Mr. Trump we are all counting on you".

That is the definition of optimism, or is it denial? Since when would anybody consider a businessman good at what he does, who refused to pay his workers, filed for 6 bankruptcies and hides his tax returns? What you can count on his more of the same. When people show you who they are, believe them.
DR (New England)
What are you counting on him to do? What evidence do you have that he will do anything for you (or anyone else in the country). What will you do when/if he breaks all his promises?
pete (new york)
Stella, Time to move forward with our new President. Or you can refuse and wish him bad luck. Your choice.
Alan (Woodstock)
It is not a coincidence that this video was released hours after the meeting between Trump and the media. This was a warning shot to the media that he will use alternative means of direct communication with the population and to prove that he can get his version of the truth out, despite anything that is otherwise reported. And this is a terrifying prospect if the networks feel that he is threatening their revenue stream and start to fall in line with him. Plain and simple, he is bullying the press. We will shortly see how much backbone they have to stand up to a tyrant.
Anthony N (NY)
To Alan,

Slight correction - there is "one version" of the truth. Anything else is opinion or lies.
Tylinsky (NYC)
I don't think he is bullying the press at all! The media has shown its true colors in the past election cycle and they all lost! If I were Trump i would not trust them either. The media has been extremely biased against him - especially CNN and the NYT. When are we going to have a media that really covers issues objectively? Kudos to Trump for using YouTube to communicate directly to WE THE PEOPLE!
PK (New York)
my guess, not much....
Robert (Tallahassee, FL)
The internet has the potential to "democratize" information, but there is a difference between "information" and "fact", as well as a difference between "fact" and "truth". Like all technologies it is a two-edged sword. It can just as easily serve the purposes of limiting information by denying anyone the standing to ask difficult questions. The ability to ask follow-up questions, to test statements in an adversarial forum, is critical to the ability to separate truth from self-serving story-telling. This is as true in the public political sphere as in a courtroom. This is a dangerous trend that the media needs to fight against.
Barry Williams (NY)
You can't get to the difference between fact and truth until you can at least get to fact. You can't get truth out of lies.

What the Internet allows is the widespread and unfiltered dissemination of data. Too many people now accept any data as information, and then assume it to be fact. We even had people supporting Trump say they didn't care about facts!

The Internet is a tool. It can't limit information or deny anyone the ability to ask difficult questions. Only people using it can do that.

The fight starts at home and in our schools. More than ever, we need to teach our children how to analyze data to extract information, and how to analyze information to determine fact from fiction. It's difficult, because so many of us never learned that ourselves.
RickBeth (Washington DC)
I'm no Trump fan. And I agree with the idea that response, exchange, give and take are essential. But how is it that the media we call "social" are the ones Robert charges with lacking this interactive dimension while he implies that "traditional" media inherently possess it?
Barry Williams (NY)
Because the truly traditional media are professionals, usually educated and trained as journalists. Social media is anyone with an online account who wants to voice an opinion. It is the professional aspect informing response, exchange, give and take that is important. With social media, there seems to be a tacit assumption that all sources of data and information are equal. If one doesn't possess the ability to sift reality from that flood, then one has to hope to find media professional enough to provide help in a reasonably thorough and unbiased manner. Understand, though, that no human can be completely unbiased. Frankly, I don't care if I can detect your bias if I trust that the information you have reported are the facts and all of the facts you can possibly discover.
Eleanore Whitaker (NJ)
Since I no longer care what this maniac does, I am fairly certain he will create jobs. Just not in the United States. Given that he owns 100 businesses in 18 foreign countries and has already been wheeling and dealing with leaders in the countries where his businesses are located, go ahead America. Tell us how this is "normal" and how this guy who refused to disclose his tax records is now courting his business associates in India, England, Russia and China.

Get your visas and your passports ready. Herr Trump will make sure if you are deported, those deportations include jobs in cheap labor countries.
Thomas Payne (Cornelius, NC)
We are blessed to be retired and to have a bit of a nest egg in a 401K. We will pull a good chunk out before the New Year, and another good chunk after January 1 and put that money in an FDIC-insured savings account. We will also make it a point to continue to use the power of our purse as our meagre weapon against policies that we don't like. I have a feeling that the next four years are going to be pretty bleak in terms of our spending, other than forking out for whatever increases we face with my wife's health insurance until such time as she qualifies for Medicare, IF Medicare survives.
VB (San Diego, CA)
You realize, of course, that Ryan has set this March as his target date for beginning the "phase-out" of Medicare........
Kathryn Meyer (Carolina Shores, NC)
So it looks like we'll be getting a series of scripted statements with no room for questioning for the next 4 years.
