In 13 Headlines, the Drama of Election Night

It is interesting to look at the map from the perspective of just the States.

Obviously there is a substantial gap between most of America and the

Coastal Elites.

I don't know what the Democrats plan to do, but they have to reach out to more

Americans in the Middle States if they want a more unified country.

What a wonderful progression. A day that began with a good bit of hope, and also a lot of apprehension. And then it began to bloom like a flower in the Spring, transforming before my very eyes, into a thing of beauty. Yes. We were saved from the beast, spared the evil sorceress and the dark days of gloom that lay ahead, the dim future as had been foretold by her minions of the press, the all-knowing, the directors of our collective national thought.
I will remember that wonderful and triumphant night for the rest of my life.
Thank you, America. The way of life that has made this nation the greatest in the world, has been preserved once more. Thank You, Dear Lord.
Ellen Liversidge (San Diego CA)
Couple the headlines with music (the "1812 Overture", maybe?) and you've got the germ of a musical.
John Brown (Idaho)
Watching the Map it is just so obvious how the Democrats failed
to reach out to the average American.

Those who are still unhappy ought to plead with the Electors
of the Electoral College to change their votes.
Steve (NJ)
In 2010 Americans plead to Obama change course gave GOP the house he ignored them in 2012 in 2014 the GOP gained seats again taking the senate pleading Obama to change course he ignored them it's 2016 Clinton ran on 4 more years of Obama she lost and you want electors to do what ?

After going to bed early on election night, I woke up at nearly 3 a.m. and nervously checked my phone. The NYTimes' "Trump Triumphs" greeted my bleary eyes, and I was certain I was still dreaming. It is a shocking nightmare from which I have been trying to awaken ever since.
Paul (Vorarlberg, Austria)
Because of the time difference, those of us in Europe had the same dramatic experience. In a nanosecond, I went straight to a Trump triumph from a Clinton expected victory with no chance to digest gradually the news as it was happening. Shocking to say the least.

My only advantage was one good night's sleep from ignorance. Haven't slept that well since.
Dale Chadwick (Pennsylvania)
Come on people! I'm not happy with the result but the nation will survive, there are people hurting and maybe, just maybe, someone as unorthodox as Thump can change the culture in Washington for the better. Hold the dispare for at least a couple of months.
mikemos (Seattle)
The only hope I have is that Trump didn't mean half the things he said on the campaign trail, but that in itself is depressing. You're asking me to not *despair* about either:

A president who denies climate change is real, wants to deport millions of people, want to register members of a religion, has business interests while being president, is cozy with an expansionist dictator, ect....
OR
A president who will say anything in order to get elected. Including jailing his opponent.
Coureur des Bois (Boston)
This is a very timely report. I am not happy with the results of the election. Today I have been putting together some headlines from the Times in the days leading up to the election. I believe they provide some good guidelines for the Democratic response to the election.

TRUMP STAYS FIRM ON HAVING OPTION TO DISPUTE VOTE

TRUMP BACKERS SEE REVOLUTION IF CLINTON WINS

DONALD TRUMP SLIPPING IN THE POLLS WARNS OF 'STOLEN ELECTION'

DONALD TRUMP SAYS HE WILL ACCEPT ELECTION OUTCOME 'IF I WIN'

DONALD TRUMP SUGGESTS 'SECOND AMENDMENT PEOPLE' COULD ACT AGAINST HILLARY CLINTON.
PubliusMaximus (Piscataway, NJ)
An absolute unthinkable nightmare come true.
Saints Fan (Houston, TX)
Beautiful, a dream come true.
Caetano Fenner (Caxias Do Sul)
I was also astonished by this "new" reality, but shouldn't reading the news - more so in the quintessential NYT - bring us that reality on a daily basis? At least we could not be this astonished if Journalism did go to the far countryside where trumpism was being consolidated.
Reader In Wash, DC (Washington, DC)
Has anyone asked Hillary why after winning the primary she did not visit Wisconsin even once and visited Michigan only once on the day before the election? Guess the "most qualified" candidate is pretty incompetent.
FrankTrades (Beantown)
Other things on her mind. If she gets pardoned, she will or be able to take the 5th before congress!
Karen Jones (Honolulu)
Last Tuesday I was traveling in Northern California, checking news feeds as the day went on. By early evening a sense of dread replaced the hopefulness of the morning. While visiting my son and his family, we sat around the dining room table reading headlines with dismay as the red tide moved westward. We went to bed hopeful and awoke to the sadly alliterative final headline.
Starman (MN)
This is great to see. Thank you very much New York Times.
em em seven (Peoria)
Silver lining: You just invented a new emetic! Dependably empties the stomach contents of anyone with a conscience.

Clinton lost because she is an arrogant loser. The only reason she was even considered for a nomination was because both she and her husband were living with blackmailers.

She just blew 1 BILLION dollars of other people's money, with the presidency offered to her on a silver platter, by the DNC, the government, the internet, the American media, Hollywood, the Liberal elite, the Pope, and the most regal of Kings, Lebron and Bruce. They gave her a 30 point lead in the last quarter.

And she lost.

Really funny to see her concession speech mimicked the courtroom
in 'To Kill a Mockingbird', with all the elites sitting on the ground floor, and all the 'deplorables' up in the rafters, the volunteers who didn't get the plane rides, who never got paid, crying their eyes out for the loser. And what was with those goofy purple lapels? Did she have one color for winning.....and this one?

If the deck was stacked even more tightly for her the next time, she would still find a way to lose.
azwildcat (az)
And now we don't even have Gwen Ifil to help get us through it!
Jay Lincoln (NYC)
The Times was completely biased against Trump (and Sanders).

It was hilarious to see the flip that night in the headlines. According to the Times, Trump's chances were negligible. For many months it was below 10%, and just a couple weeks ago it was supposedly 5%. Within hours on Election Day, it flipped to 100%.

The Times actually did us Trump supporters a huge favor by insulting Sanders, turning many of them into Trump supporters. The Times also did a big favor predicting a blowout for Clinton because it made her supporters overconfident and depressed Clinton's turnout.

And by constantly implying Trump supporters (all 60M of them!) were racists, sexists, facists, deplorables etc, the Times and the rest of the liberal media actually motivated Trump supporters even more.

Thanks NY Times!

Responsible, accurate journalism. No wonder Trump takes exception to almost everything printed in this newspaper.
Human Being (Southern California)
It's super fun reliving the worst night of my life. Not.
TR88 (PA)
If that was the worst night of your life, I have some bad news for you. You will have far worse in your future.
Tim DuHaime (St Petersburg, FL)
Very enjoyable! Thank you.
Stephen Kurtz (Windsor, ON)
Well at least you didn't run the head line"Clinton beats Trump."
njglea (Seattle)
Too bad we didn't hear forcefully about some of this BEFORE the election at some major media outlet. Instead we heard about e-mails. Disgraceful.

Our long national Trumpian nightmare is just beginning.

Those headlines were just the opening credits for the Grand Old Poseidon misadventure where a terrifying right-wing rogue wave of tyranny, ignorance, cultured stupidity and greed completely capsizes American democracy.

This is an absolute American horror show.
White Rabbit (Key West)
And now we have the "rogue" President-elect and it is not Sarah Palin. Fasten your seat belts, America.
Melissa (Rochester)
Just the opposite -- our long national nightmare is finally coming to an end. And the party of special interest and rich white folks lost......and lost big. Now its time to tend to the needs of the middle class.....something Dems are incapable of doing.
Average annual growth in rel gdp under Obama (to date): 1.3%
Average annual rate of growth in real gdp 1930 to 1939, in the first 10 years of the Great Depression: 1.33%.
As I said, our long national nightmare is ending.
Matt Ippolito (Maryland)
This article needs to be accompanied by a trigger warning.
si (seattle, WA)
Still makes me sad. It's just feels surreal.
JO (CO)
An even more illustrative graphic would be the one that showed the "likelihood" of a Clinton victory going from around 95% at 8 p.m. to around 5% at 10 p.m. (Eastern). Polling and odds-makers-in-journo's-clothing will never be the same.
Mr. Right (Westchester County)
Unfortunately there was never any real polling. The media/Washington/wall street establishment attempted and did produce numbers that forecasted not the reality of the voting populace but the dreams and hopes of the left. This was not only a disservice to the people of the nation but to the democratic process as a whole. Now we have an all out attempt through a petition to throw out the peoples vote and the electoral process in order to continue the left agenda. The people in this country should be leary
Lucy (Moab, UT)
This is one of those pieces where the reader’s comments are better than the article itself.
Laura Benton (Tillson, New York)
You just triggered my post-traumatic stress.
Emily (Columbus, Ohio)
Same.
Bello (western Mass)
Sorry I looked at this.
Vic (Stirling NJ)
Can you slow the gif down so we can actually read it?

looks like the dewey vs truman evening.

These headlines tell the story of one of the worst nights I have ever lived through. It still feels like a nightmare, but I am now resigned to the fact that I probably won't wake up from it for at least four years.
Sophie (New Mexico)
This is no time to doze off. We need good people to be as awake as possible!
muff (New York)
Try living through the last eight years of the Obama administration. Now that was a NIGHTMARE.
Roger Wilson Corman Jr (Nyack, NY)
Wow, if only there was audio if the accompanying hysterical shrieking--it would be perfect!
Steven Morrell (Texas)
Watching the progression of those 13 headlines is like reliving the nightmare. It sickens me.
HSNYC (New York, NY)
Thanks, New York Times, for helping us relive that nightmare.
