With more and more people get worried over the fact about climate change, we need to start implementing laws to end it. In my opinion the Paris Agreement is going influence people to stop emitting gas, but as a week goes on, those same people are just going to go right back into where they started, because huge change is not a big characteristic of many people in this generation nowadays. Also the agreement is really just telling you to stop using emissions, it's not really enforcing us to entirely stop, which is why many people in the first place aren't even going to take it into consideration. This is why the people of the US lawmaking, need to come up with a solution, to start banning fossil fuels in certain cities, and even smaller states. By doing this, it will get the word out to the other states that fossil fuels are coming to an end, which creates an environment where people are either transitioning to solar or other renewables, or they’re going to do it when it becomes a future law.

Climate Change is happening all around the world and will continue to occur. Natural disasters are of course normal to an extent but the natural disasters that are currently happening are so extreme and climate change is to blame. Climate Change - the name can be a bit misleading because when people hear this they might expect it to be significantly warmer outside and although the difference in temperature might seem like it would be a difference of 10 plus degrees but the reality of that is it is 1 or 2 degrees. But this 1 1 or 2 degrees is still significant due to the fact that when you look back in history the change of 1 degree happened over the course of 100 to 200 years, whereas this is happening in 10 years or less! Climate Changes effects were first found around the same time plastic and oil production began. Oil and plastic are both leading causes to Climate Change due to their toxins they release. Climate change is not a hoax according to many if not all scientists. For instance, as the AAAS a group apart of NASA says: "The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society." (2006). There are so many scientists who have repeatedly come out to the media about their concerns on what climate change has instore for the future so it is now our turn to speak up and educate people on the dangers of Climate Change.

What we can do: First of all, it is important to know and understand the issue of climate change in order to tackle it. Everyday, greenhouse gases are emitted into the atmosphere that can linger for long periods of time. Effects of climate change also don’t show up immediately, but years later, meaning this conflict is bound to get worse and worse with more greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere everyday. These gases have caused climate change, or more extreme and inconsistent weather. Effects include melting of ice caps, causing sea level rise, global climate change, and many natural disasters. As someone who saw and felt some of the effects of the spread of fires in the Northbay of California, it surely is scary. Smog lingered for 2 weeks that had terrible odor, and black carbon-rich air. I didn’t even get the worst of it, fires were roaring up north, while we only felt the impacts of the smoke and heat. On top of that, there have been other travesties hitting the United States. Two massive and destructive hurricanes hitting in a short amount of time is surely a testament to the impacts of climate change. In order to stop these things from happening we must act NOW! This means using renewable and clean energy NOW! Stop or really cut down on the use of cow products (produce methane) NOW! Use electric vehicles NOW! It is vital to take drastic steps before it is much too late.

I think that Climate Change is real and human activity is definitely to blame There are so many things that humans do that definitely contribute to Climate Change. First off, humans burn things like coal and oil, which release dangerous fossil fuels into the atmosphere, and building up into the ozone layer, which overtime causes our earth to heat up. Also, we are using up most of our earth's natural resources, very fast. This is making it hard for us to get more of that resource, and in this process, we are burning more and more fossil fuels. We, as humans also need food, so as a result, we have a huge agriculture industry, where we use fertilizer to grow certain foods. This fertilizer goes into the streams and the lakes, and pollute it. Lastly, along with agriculture, we have livestock like cows that emit methane , that goes into the atmosphere. As a result, it is reasonable to conclude that humans are the leading cause of Climate change as a whole.
Emma K (California)
Due to the recent spike of our global temperature, I can say that human's impact and industrialization has everything to due with climate change. It is almost impossible to deny the exponential growth of temperature and humans' fairly new technology that emits greenhouse gases. Some people may seem skeptical because they could argue that the climate change might be a normal pattern of the Earth. However, the Earth was projected to be in the cold decline of the pattern, but the temperature is only rising. Climate change is hard for people to understand, and more or less dispute. We need to turn the rise of temperature around and come to the realization that humans, do in fact, have direct correlation to global warming.

The conversation on the coal industry in the United States and worldwide is extremely controversial. There is always news emerging about the issue with coal in the United States, and some of the most recent and relative news about this issue is the fact that the Republican party believes coal is an “abundant, clean, affordable and reliable domestic” source of energy. This opinion of theirs directly opposes Obama’s previously set regulations that were put in place to hopefully put an end to the harmful emissions that are released due to the overwhelming consumption of coal in the US. The statement from the Republican party that coal is “clean” is absolutely incorrect and it doesn’t take a scientist to come to this conclusion. Coal is a finite resource on earth and although we have a decent amount of it in the US, there is clearly not enough to last even a substantial amount of time. So planning on expanding and putting everything we have into an industry that is destined to die is not a beneficial or smart decision for our country. Overall, no matter what, coal cannot be “clean.” In any way that you burn it to make energy even if the fumes are filtered, there will always be toxic emissions being released into the environment. However, today there are many new methods and ways of generating energy that aren’t harmful to the environment, however, if these methods aren’t put into use, then the overwhelming issue of climate change will continue to worsen exponentially.
Kat (California)
There are many different forms of energy; some cleaner than others. I support any energy source that does not hugely and negatively impact the environment. Relying on coal and oil for energy is not safe or best for our environment. Clinton's plan to “cut emissions more than 80% by 2050” is a great goal and motivation for people to come together and try our best to do what we can to best help our planet. However, in order to make an impactful difference, we need to start with accepting the fact that our climate is going downhill, stop denying or pretending like nothing is happening, and take action. We need to start by decreasing our use with fossil fuel production and switch to using clean sources of energy, like, solar, wind, and other environmentally friendly sources. The more people that want to make a difference, the more we can help our planet. Humans are not just making things worse for ourselves, we are also affecting animals and nature around us. Humans have an advantage that other animals don't have. We can think and plan ahead. Since animals can’t do this very well, we need to keep them from being greatly affected by our own doings. As humans, we need to use our knowledge and abilities to bring our planet to a cleaner and safer place.
Amelie (California)
Climate Change is happening now from the accumulation of past emissions of human production and will continue to occur even after we stop emitting greenhouse gases. The longer we continue using non renewable resources, the emissions released will linger in our Earth’s atmosphere for centuries and natural weather will amplify to extremities. According to climate.nasa.gov carbon dioxide levels in the air have gone over the industrial revolution levels. This was the beginning of burning fossil fuels like coal and oil, increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. These production processes are still used today, continuing to pollute the atmosphere for centuries. High temperature weather have been recorded to increase with intensity. Hsph.harvad.edu stated that “Even a small global temperature increase could lead to troubling consequences, like rising sea levels, disruption in food supply, flooding, and an increase in infectious diseases” as well as respiratory problems like asthma. The sooner we stop denying the emissions from our factories affecting people and the environment at a faster, more intense rate, we can save the thin ozone we have now and halt the continuous effects of greenhouse gases. The advancements of weather and the growing health problems are already occurring. It’s only a matter of time when they will amplify and cause even significant damages.
Elda (San Francisco, California)
I think that human activity is the main cause of climate change because first of all were the ones who burn fossil fuels and clear trees that absorb carbon dioxide, sending heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere. Certain types of extreme weather events involved with climate change have become more frequent and intense, including prolonged periods of heat, heavy downpours, and, in some regions, floods and droughts. We can know that humans created climate change, by measuring CO2 in the atmosphere and trapped in ice to find that it's increasing and that levels are higher than anything we've seen in hundreds of thousands of years. Also, scientists agree that today’s warming is primarily caused by humans. The main cause of global warming is the human expansion of the greenhouse effect." Some examples of the greenhouse effect are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. In conclusion, humans should put an end to climate change, before it's too late, by doing that we have to be energy efficient, choose renewable power, eat wisely, trim waste, and most importantly get involved.
Joey S (San Rafael, CA)
I believe that climate change is real and that humans are to blame. I find it impossible to imagine how so many people can deny climate change. Scientific data and statistics have shown over the years how big the human race's carbon footprint is, and all of the greenhouse gases we are emitting. There are so many renewable sources and environmentally friendly methods of getting energy, yet all most people do is burn fossil fuels. Yes, I admit, it is currently expensive and labor intensive to get energy from renewable sources, but in a few years, when their prices drop, people will have to find a new excuse for destroying the planet. Money can't revive a dead planet, but human kindness can.
Chus Z. (Oatmeal, TX)
As many people know, sixty countries came together in the December of 2016 to agree upon new international rules and regulations noted in the Paris Climate Agreement. However, this may not have been a strong enough start to get us to the point of which we need to be as of 2050. First off, the documents didn’t even include the words “fossil fuels”. It mentions keeping the global temperature to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius or less, but does not mention keeping fossil fuels in the ground. Second, it limits the temperature rise to 1.5 degrees celsius, which would still lead to catastrophic events in the near future. If the 1.5 degrees is barely exceeded, which it inevitably will, coral reefs will not stand a chance, and mediterranean climate zones will have ten percent less fresh water. Also, we will be well on our way to having no ice in the poles by 2100. Third and lastly, the agreement states that we should peak our emissions by 2030, and be on a steady downhill trend. This demand is not nearly ambitious enough. In fact, in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, we must peak our emissions by 2020, ten years earlier than the agreement says. All in all, the Paris Climate Agreement was a step in the right direction, but the goals it stated are not nearly ambitious enough to get us into the safe zone regarding climate change.
Tucker (CA)
I think that coal, in the current way it is collected and harnessed for energy, can never be truly "clean". All throughout the process of coal being mined, transported, refined, and burned for energy there are a lot of pollutants being emitted into the atmosphere. Some of this pollution could be reduced, say if it was mined, transported, and refined in a cleaner way. However, the burning of coal at its fundamental core pollutes the earth. Also while coal may seem reliable and abundant, our supply will not last too much longer. There is approximately 100 years worth of coal left in the United States, which isn't exactly "abundant" when compared to renewable energies like wind or solar, which will last millions of years. Other energy sources mentioned by the Republican energy platform, such as natural gas, nuclear power plants, and hydropower are, in theory at least, more abundant, cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable than coal could ever be.
Jack (California)
Climate change is a complex issue with many layers. The top contenders are the big oil and gas companies, but with all the money that they own they are able to influence our government and buy people's silence. The main issues are overlooked, like how the agriculture industry is actually the worst source of fossil fuels. The cattle industry has enough money and power to influence politics and the way of life for the citizens. People have been killed by hired guns for speaking out against them. If you want to know more about this, go watch a documentary called Cowspiracy. People who own the big oil companies don't have to convince people that climate change isn't real in order to make more money, they just have to keep us divided and arguing amongst ourselves. A nation divided doesn't get any work done, and things won't get better if we stay this way. We jut need to stand united against them, and tell them we wont take it any more.
Finlay Norton-Lindsay (California)
I realize this thread is probably dead, and no one will read this, but I had to say something. A huge percent of American news coverage of Global warming presents the topic as a two sided political debate so that they can remain un-biased. However, with the solid scientific evidence proving the theory of human caused climate change, this attempt at balance is beyond biased, it is wrong. If a meteor where coming to destroy the earth, and had even a portion of the scientific proof that global warming had, the newsrooms would not be posting articles that say, "Should we do something about our imminent doom?", they would be posting articles telling people to do everything they can to stop the apocalypse and aid efforts to stop any potential catastrophe. Global warming is just as much of a threat, probably even more so, as it will not leave the earth able to recover, however we still present it as a political issue. I find it interesting that unlike the meteor analogy, the rich wealthy and powerful stand to lose money, and are at no threat, as they will have passed on by the time there is any significant threat. Over 90% of scientists strongly believe in the existence of climate change. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane are emitted into the atmosphere, causing what is known as the Greenhouse Effect. Although some of these gases are natural, most of them are caused by human activity. An example of this is industries that produce energy using coal, oil, and other natural gases that are detrimental to the environment. They emit gases such as carbon dioxide and methane, the two most abundant greenhouse gases currently in the atmosphere. Another major contributor to this world wide problem is the agriculture and livestock industries. Although some of the plants that are planted for agriculture absorb large amounts of gases, the output of CO2 and methane is much greater than can be compensated for with these plants. The agriculture industry also produces greenhouse gases during manufacturing processes. Although all of these issues can be solved, it is very difficult because not only do some people not believe in climate change, but the issue has become a political issue which influences people's view points. Accordingly, if climate change was even more widely recognized, industries such as energy production companies would go bankrupt because of their non-environmental products.
Ezra.TB (Pahokee, Florida)
Climate Change is undeniably “an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time,” as Hillary claims. Many people deny it, however those same deniers will soon find themselves knee deep in rising oceans and food shortages. Simply one degree of temperature rise would be catastrophic- causing hundreds of thousands upon millions of people to die or relocate. To claim that something that could quite literally eliminate our species is irrelevant or a hoax simply because you want to make money is insane. There’s a theory that’s been around for a substantial amount of time called the Great Filter Theory. This dictates that every complex intelligent lifeform goes through a ‘filter’ or a massive social challenge that threatens to eliminate the species. A mass extinction event, if you will. Climate Change could very well be the largest filter for our species, of our time- and if we ignore it then god knows what will happen. However, I shouldn’t say ‘god knows’, because this will affect everyone- whether god knows about it or not. Our world is just that- our world- for a reason. Anything and everything we do or will do is guaranteed to rippled throughout (or cascade throughout) the world in a deadly combination of human ignorance and faulty infrastructure. Climate Change, the next mass extinction event: coming to a city near you.
Angela (San Francisco, CA)
Climate change is real, and human activity is to blame. Many people think that the temperature rising is part of the Earth’s natural fluctuations, which have gradual increases and decreases throughout periods of time. However, the climate has never had this immense of a difference in temperature. Within the 2000’s, the natural curve of the global temperatures has rocketed up. The start of the this increase started around the same time that the world started to depend heavily on coal and oil as sources of energy. Both of these non-renewable energy sources release many harmful greenhouse gases, which cover the Earth, like a blanket. These harmful gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, are also produced with the everyday human activities, such as driving a car or raising livestock. All these human activities and more fill the Earth with toxic gases, heating the Earth, one degree at a time.
Ashley M. (CA)
In the past months multiple natural disasters have destroyed homes and infrastructure in places across the world. This is an indicator of climate change, which is why the statement climate change is "an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time"(Hilary Clinton) is absolutely true. Climate change will continue to ruin homes, lives and cities as long as we turn a blind eye to it. If we don't treat climate change as the serious problem it is, and soon, it will be too late. This fact makes Hilary Clinton's quote labeling climate change as an urgent threat logical and hopefully makes others consider what they can do to save the planet. People like Trump aren't worried about the planet. In fact, Trump only cares about his money. Many profitable businesses aren't willing to convert to renewable/environmentally friendly manufacturing because it will lose them money. This immediately makes their views biased and not credible, as they will never admit the truth.
joe (San francisco)
Personally, I do believe in climate change and I think that a substantial amount of evidence can prove that it is real. I also believe that human activity is behind the warming of the planet. It is a known fact that humans pollute the planet everyday. The cars we drive, planes we fly, and trash we throw away all contribute to the earth's climates changing. For people to still be skeptical and deny these facts, there are lots of more graphs, charts, and data for them to look at. I also do believe that if we do not stop polluting our planet, we could be at fault for countless plants and animals to go extinct, if not ourselves.
Lauren (California)
I am absolutely behind Hillary Clinton's environmental initiatives, my only opposition is that her strive to reduce the U.S.'s emissions by 80% should be more ambitious, and by that I mean I believe that i should happen sooner than 2050. As an extremely environmentally-driven and conscious person, I have always viewed the concept that climate change as the largest long-term threat to humankind and life on Earth as an absolute fact, and would endorse most efforts to reduce and stop its negative impacts. In my opinion, I find Clinton's proposed regulations as good policies, though I do recognize the focus to install half a billion solar panels in under four years as at least slight unrealistic and very cost-consuming. Subsequently, I heavily disagree with Donald Trump's views on climate change. His claims that an environmental focus would "weaken the U.S.'s security and keep us reliant on foreign sources of energy completely illogical. Literally speaking of security, as of military, yes our defenses would be slightly weakened with a shifted focus of funds and such, but the fact remains that the U.S. spends the most on military than all other first-world major nations combined. And with as many allies as we have, I think that we would be fine. By switching to renewable energy, the U.S. would become so much less reliant on foreign countries for energy as well with the ability to infinitely, sustainably produce it for ourselves.
Emerson Smith (Marin County, CA)
Personally I believe that not only is climate change a reality but it is also clearly caused by humans. For those who are skeptical, climate change can be proven by the countless graphs, charts, and data that have been collected based on the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere and how those gasses have affected the climate. Every action we make affects the oceans, the air, and the rising climate. If you are one questioning why to believe me I would totally understand. I am in an environmentally focused program and every day the things we learn prove and demonstrate the fact that climate change is in fact a reality and that we are worsening the environment. Unfortunatly if we don't act soon it may be too late.
Angel M (California)
If Climate change is real, humans are to blame. They constantly contribute through green house gases. The waste in both energy and electricity emits large amount of Co2 and water vapor. Human agriculture releases ridiculous levels of methane. These green house gases get stuck in our atmosphere and and traps heat, changing the climate. Many people are aware of this affect and how they contribute. Their actions are leading to a poor future for next generations. Everyone should take initiative and put a stop to climate change. Many people deny that they contribute to climate change beacuse its scary for them. The idea that their every day actions are causes for a worldwide crisis is overwhelming. Climate scientists are able to easily see the information and they've found that 90% agree that humans relate to change in the climate, but someones own guilt can cloud their judgement and make them deny the obvious. If people are somehow not to blame, the climate change is simply a natural phenomenon that happens every few centuries or so. Eventually the global temperature would come back down after the peak of the temperature spike is done.
Rosa Sickenberger (Asheville, NC)
Climate change has been an issue for a while now. Some people think that it doesn’t exist, like most people on the Republican side, and some believe it’s an issue, like the Democratic side. In 2012, Donald Trump tweeted that "The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive." On the other side, Hillary Clinton says that “Climate change is an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time”. I agree with Clinton, because science has proven that Climate Change is real. There's a theory that over 1/2 million people will die by 2050 because of the lack of food that global warming will cause. This is just a tiny problem, too, compared with all of the other issues that will come from it. I think that we need to use solar and wind energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels, like coal, oil, and natural gas. Driving electric cars could help immensely with this, as almost ⅕ of the U.S.’s gas emissions come from cars and trucks. This is a huge portion, and if all cars became electric, we would be producing that much less CO2. One of the problems with this, however, is that electric cars are so expensive, and nobody wants to put that much work and money into helping the Earth. In Norway, 23.4% of cars were electric by 2015, because there’s a very high tax rate on non-electric cars. If we can get there, so many more changes will be possible, and we can do more to prevent climate change.
andrew (ashevillle)
Global warming. The main cause of global warming is carbon emissions, so we need to cut down on those. The main carbon emitters are cars and… farms! Scientists are designing electric cars, and those don’t emit much carbon. For farms, there is a technology addressing this subject that uses vertical farming that will cut carbon emissions but it will be a long time before it is implemented. A way to fix this is to have the government encourage this new way of farming. A lot of farmers would implement this strategy, cutting carbon emissions and slowing global warming.
Duane D. (Seattle, WA)
I agree with you Andrew, however no matter what we do now, the earth's temperature will rise regardless if we reduce it to zero. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2513936/It-late-Reducing-... We may engage in reducing our carbon emissions for the better anyways, even if the earth will get a little bit hotter. (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/combating-climate-change-farm... the farming method is a great choice for a change towards cutting carbon emissions.
kook paugh (texas)
i dont agree with Andrew that the main cause of global warming is carbon emissions because cattle produces more methane into the air and causes more climate change than carbon emissions. Even though that is still a big part of global warming I believe that cows produce lots of methane. Did you know that one burger require 660 gallons of water ONLY ONE burger!
Angela Mokritskaya (Asheville, North Carolina)
One of the most thought about issues in recent presidential debates is Climate Change. I personally think that climate change is something very serious, and I believe that we caused it to become a thing. There are so many different reasons to why climate change exists. Gasoline in our vehicles is one of them. Donald T. believes that global warming is a hoax, but with research created by NASA we know global warming is real. It's crazy to think that we the humans caused it. We started climate change and we can stop it from getting worse. Hillary Clinton want to use clean energy, which will most likely help climate change. I agree with using clean energy.
Nicole Porter (Annandale, New Jersey)
I agree with this because Climate change is a huge deal. I believe it may even be one of the top issues our world will have to face. Because if you think about it climate change could destroy the world, and then there would be no presidential election, or nothing left to focus on. Also I agree with this comment because we are the ones that allow climate change to exist. For example the gasoline in our cars which millions of americans use every day, and that causes pollution which leads to climate change. Also I agree with this because it doesn’t even make sense for Donald Trump to believe climate change is a hoax, Nasa has done research proving this. And if Donald Trump gets elected president he doesn’t believe climate change is real then that means he won’t do anything to stop it. Finally I agree with this because we did cause climate change we can stop it, and fix this problem. Hillary wants to use clean energy which will very much help this issue. Overall I agree.
Maddie J (California)
Climate change is an issue in today's world that many people do not realize. Most simply just shrug off the idea that polluting the world is just a rumor or a hoax, while few understand the seriousness of what is actually going on. Although we only see small effects today, we need to think of the long term effects that will happen to the generations after us. It angers me to think that a person, like Donald Trump, who could possibly have so much power, would call climate change unimportant. We, humans, are the problem for these terrible pollutants that create these greenhouse effects. We are putting not only ourselves, but other animals at risk as well. I believe we should find and use alternative energy sources to cut back and reduce these effects towards our world. If we don't recognize the harm that this issue provokes, then we are creating a life that could ultimately destroy this generation.
Hanoke.A (Seattle,Washington)
I totally agree with the statement Maddie J,because most people don't look at climate change as a big thing currently. Also a president like Donald Trump probably isn't going to want to do anything about climate change,so we should take action as citizens of the this nation. So i strongly believe we as Americans should be more aware of the times & the amount of wood we burn.
Katie D. (California)
As far as climate change goes, I stand with Hillary Clinton. Climate change is absolutely an immediate threat that is affecting all of us, all the time. It is inevitable, and Donald Trump has no means of addressing this serious issue, but rather influences the continuation of fossil fuel drilling and less environmental regulations to do so. However, it will not be solely up to our president to take action on climate change, but up to we the people, the masses who are to blame for the initial problem, to work to fix climate change. Therefore, we must recognize that we are at fault and until we find a means for cleaner energy use, coal just isn't going to cut it.
Jack Sharpe (Sacramento, CA)
Climate Change is one of the most severe issues that faces our Nation and World Today. Many republicans believe that not using the natural resources we have to it’s full capacity will be detrimental to our country and put many companies out of business. However, the Democratic consensus seems to be that our exploitation of natural resources such as petroleum is the key reason behind the drastic shift. Regardless of what causes the shifts, the Summers are getting hotter, winters are getting colder, hurricanes are getting heavier, and tornadoes are getting more devastating. It should be on the top of the agenda to narrow the causes of these, so that there is no doubt on what our approach should be to fix it. Both sides of the argument can be understood of if climate change is real or not. Even if it isn't our environment should be more protected regardless. People should not be able to walk into New Dehli (Which was just named the city with the worst air pollution) or Shanghai and expect to be healthier after leaving. There are many ways of accomplishing this in an effective manner. One obvious way of fixing this is to start using alternative energy sources such as solar and wind. While none of them may be easy getting support on both sides of the aisle, it is essential in the success of our species that we find out the true cause and solution to this devastating issue.
Zoe B. (California)
I don’t agree with Donald Trump views on climate change and global warming. We need a president that recognize global warming and climate change as a serious issue. Global warming is a big issue that we need to take seriously, because if not future generations might be able to live on this planet anymore. If global warming gets worse it might cause serious health repercussions on humans, animals, and the environment. We need to find ways to produce energy that doesn’t destroy our ozone layer. We also need to fund clean energy companies, and pay for more clean energy companies to be build around the country. It may rise price on good because they can’t use coal as a source of their energy anymore, but won’t you want your great-great-grandchildren to live in a health world. We need to keep reducing our emission levels each year to make sure that we have a health world.
Lauren E. (Olney, Maryland)
There is no doubt that humans impact our environment from pollution, producing too much waste, cutting down trees in the rainforest, destroying habitats of wildlife, etc. I believe that people, Americans in particular, need to step up and work to find the solutions to reduce our impact on the Earth. Continuing research on Climate Change is essential to understanding and educating the nay-Sayers, such as, Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump and other extreme Republicans. We only have one Earth and one planet to live on. We can find solutions to maintaining a healthy planet for everyone if we put our minds to it.
Emily Becker (Rocklin, California)
I completely agree with you Lauren. Humans do have a negative impact on our environment and we therefore need to find solutions for the many problems we've caused. Being ignorant to this ongoing problem is not only damaging to us but to our environment. In order to make a change, we first must realize that change in necessary, something Donald Trump refuses to acknowledge. Rather than continuing our current practices, like Trump stands for, we need to advocate for change. Mining for Fossil Fuels won't cut it anymore, we have and still need to create better, more environmentally healthy alternatives.
Sarah (California)
We are at the time of being. Most everything is at the touch of our fingertips. We are capable of doing anything you could really set your mind to through the built up complex system we have created throughout the world, yet people have lost this connectedness and knowledge of how humanity got this far in the first place. Scientific research blatantly displays that global warming is here and we are the cause of it. This is not a natural cycle. There are 1.5 billion cows in the world and each year one cow produces 154-265 pounds of methane. (Time forchange.org) Transportation itself causes 30% of greenhouse gas emissions just in the U.S. Each car produces about 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases for every gallon of gas. (Unionofconcernedscientist.com) I agree with Ryan Caughey that America needs to create a clean energy era by cutting down on fossil fuels. By doing this maybe other countries will follow behind. Many look at the evidence of global warming and think that there is no hope. I disagree. It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Each person is a candle and every person can make a difference. This is not about the United States, this is about every single person who works together to create this 7 billion population on this Earth we call “Home”. We can not keep standing around. This is the time for action. This is the time for coming together and helping this very important issue that will affect us all.
Payton (California)
Sarah, your comment on the production of methane gases from cows is commonly overlooked. With each cow producing up to 265 pounds of methane, they demand more attention for change than they are receiving (timeforchange.org). Since the consumption of meat products is basically serving the consumer's demand for food, we should look at our nourishment (timeforchange.org). It is important that the people take action in reducing climate change and one of the best ways of doing so is changing their diet. Not only does it help the planet but it helps improve the health of each individual and decreases obesity nationwide. Keep in mind the importance of the government actively working to create new ways to produce energy, citizens reducing meat and dairy consumption is a way to improve the environment daily.
Carson R (templeton, CA)
I agree with Ethan Quitter on most of his topics, that climate control is a major problem and there are ways that Americans can control it. Hydrogen combustion engines are a great source of energy but it cost manufactures lots of money to create a hydrogen fuel cell. Another great source of energy for combustion engines is propane, it packs the same punch as fossil fuels such (gas or diesel) but with much lower emissions from your tailpipe. Also another advantage is that this technology is not new and has been around for ages. Quitter makes a great point in that the main cause in why fossil fuels, has not been changed even when new technology has been developed. Yet, many regions of the world still insist on using fossil fuels due to a financial standpoint on many different regions such as North America and the middle east due to the exportation and importation of oil products. These are the main reasons that climate change isn't a big problem for many countries due to the financial standpoint.
Rhys D. (Paso Robles, CA)
The evidence of global warming and climate change are hard to deter nowadays. What with water levels rising, earth temperature rising, and just about everything melting, it’s apparent that everything's changing, and changing right before our eyes. And even if you don’t believe in climate change, everyone knows that we’re running out of fossil fuels. That should be all the reason we need to start investing into renewable resources. As Braidy C. states,”climate change can affect all of us,” which is why we all need to help and make sure that the predicament that we’re in doesn’t get any worse. Afterall, climate change melts the polar ice caps, kills the coral reefs, raises the ocean and the temperature of our atmosphere, causes animals to go extinct, creates droughts and wildfires, must I go on? With all these indications and plenty of scientific evidence to fall back on, I’m befuddled at how anyone could still believe that climate change doesn’t exist.
Anala S. (Asheville, NC)
Climate change is a subject that has been focused on a lot in the recent presidential election. There appears to be two different arguments on this topic, the general Republican opinion being that climate change is a “hoax” as Donald Trump has stated. Many republicans believe that not using the natural resources we have to it’s full capacity will be detrimental to our country and put many companies out of business. However, the general Democratic opinion is the climate change is becoming worse and worse as we continue to depend on things that are harmful to our environment. Many Democrats want to cut back on these harmful things such as coal and oil, and instead use wind and solar power to help replace them. I personally agree with the latter statement, and recognize that climate change is a very real and growing issue. We can see that sea levels are starting to rise and horrible weather such as Superstorm Sandy is occurring, which are both indicators that our climate is shifting and creating new obstacles. If we support alternative energy sources it can help decrease these harmful events that are negatively affecting our not just our country but the entire world.
Drew D. (Rockville, MD)
I fully agree with your statement on what steps we need to take in order to fight climate change. I think that there are several steps that need to be taken to solve this issue, some of which you touched on in your comment. First, is education. Although there are many who acknowledge that climate change exists and is a problem, there are also people who deny it. However, if we can make the population better informed and more scientifically literate, the amount of deniers will go down. Second is mitigation. Already we have had many people displaced by the rising seas, and an Arctic that is practically without ice. If things continue in this manner, our civilization will be in serious trouble by the end of this century. If we can make our society carbon-neutral, the problems we will face in the next 100+ years will be much more manageable. Third, is adaptation. Even if we went carbon-neutral today, we would still experience significant problems. Therefore, we must adapt, mainly by changing certain aspects about the ways we live. Finally, is repair. I believe that one of the most effective ways to repair the planet is by researching and developing carbon-capture technologies to reduce the currently amplified greenhouse effect. Hopefully, we will get our act together, and by enacting policies similar to the ones presented above, we will be able to return the planet to its former glory, and ensure the continued existence of the human species.
Claire (NJ)
I agree with this statement because many people just choose to ignore climate change such as Donald Trump. I think that this is an issue that should not go ignored. We have to do something about it such as using solar panels instead of coal and oil. I think that we should be able to make a change.
Lilly (Asheville, NC)
Climate change has been an issue for a long time. This topic is a big part of this election and a big part of the country’s future, however the candidates have not spent as much time on this subject as others. As said on Hillary Clinton’s campaign website “I won’t let anyone take us backward, deny our economy the benefits of harnessing a clean energy future, or force our children to endure the catastrophe that would result from unchecked climate change.” Hillary’s campaign site says that she will achieve these goals within 10 years of taking office, she will cut energy waste by a third, reduce american oil consumption by a third and, generate enough renewable energy to power every home in america with half a billion solar panels installed by the end of her first term. In an interview in august 2016 Donald Trump said, “I’m not a big believer in man made climate change. There could be some impact, but I don’t believe it’s a devastating impact.
Braidy C (FSI)
Climate change can be a very bad thing. Pollution is a serious cause, and it can affect all of us. Just the other day I saw one of the big trucks blow black air out of its engine we had a hard time seeing what was happening, as it started to fade we could easily see it came from the very large truck ahead of us. Earlier that day my grandma had read something that said they do it on purpose. I honestly think that the truck drivers should find another way to get rid of the dirty air in it, and try not to pollute the air on purpose. It's bad enough that when fires start they let out smoke which get into people's lungs and blocks their air ways, but now that is pretty much what is gonna happen if they keep on doing this on purpose. if they don't wanna pollute the air then they should find another way to get rid of the dirty air instead of letting it out into our clean healthy earth, they are just making it worse than it already is. Donald Trump believes that climate change does not exist, correct me if I'm wrong but I think he referred to it as a Chinese hoax, as of Hillary she thinks that is an important matter she said ´´I won't let anyone take up backward, deny our economy the benefits of harnessing a clean energy future, or face our children to endure the catastrophe that would result from unchecked climate change.” In my opinion Trump pretty much said that he won't do anything about it because he doesn't think it really exists.
Emma Fountain (Asheville)
I believe that climate change is a big issue, and that we should start doing something about it now before it gets too out of hand. A lot of urbanization has a lot to do with our climate change and global warming. Many cars, trucks, factories, planes and anything that emits greenhouse gases such as, carbon dioxide and methane affects our earth's ozone layer. The ozone layer absorbs a lot of radiation and greenhouse gases causing it to trap in a lot of heat, and this heat keeps building up creating global warming. Hillary Clinton describes climate change as an “urgent challenge”, and to prevent climate change Clinton has decided to build onto Barack Obama's Clean Power Plan. She also promises to install millions of solar panels across the country to create more energy. She plans on making clean energy, and making investments to grow the economy with more jobs. Donald Trump has said, “I don’t believe in climate change”. He believes that there are much bigger problems than climate change. Personally, I believe that if we don’t do anything about climate change or global warming our clean air could run out, many opportunities for new jobs would be ignored and our environment would keep getting worse. I agree with Hillary Clinton, we should do everything we can to boost the amount of clean energy, and it's definitely not an easy task but we should try our best to help our own environment.
Rosa Sickenberger (Asheville, NC)
Emma, I think that you’re right- We have to do something about climate change, and we have to do it fast! We have so many emissions from things like electricity and transportation, which are important, but not as important as the Earth. I also think that ignoring the science and facts that prove global warming is true is ignorant of Donald Trump, because there’s proof that it’s an issue, and that he should at least put a little bit of effort into admitting that it’s real. As you said, he doesn’t believe in climate change, and I think that it would be better if he believed that it was real, instead of saying that it was “created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive." He also recently mentioned that he was going to cut $100 billion off of global warming funds to help pay for “clean water, clean air, and safety”. I think that this could ruin America, because all of the money for new technology and ideas trying to fix global warming would be taken away and spent on guns and other things that really don’t need to have a lot of money spent on them, in my opinion.
Brook (NC)
Climate change is an issue that cannot be ignored. Unfortunately, so many people believe that it is fake, and decide to dismiss it. That is, until it becomes a problem. Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton, believes that climate control is something that needs to be put in place. She believes that “we need more renewable sources” and less fossil fuels. I completely agree with her. We can find innovative ways to find more fuels and use more solar panels. On the other hand, Republican nominee Donald Trump believes that climate change isn’t real, it’s a “Chinese hoax”. I feel that may be ignorant, it seems very clear to me that climate change is, in fact, real, and even proven by NASA scientists. I see where he is coming from, though, it is a bit hard to believe. Overall, I believe that something needs to be put in place in order for Global Warming to stop being an issue. Plants are dying, animals’ habitats are melting (literally), and the air is more polluted than ever. When will the world open up their eyes and see the destruction it’s going to cause?
Mili P. (California)
I agree with Brook, climate change is a huge problem, if not one of the biggest. Our job as humans is to take care of our home, the Earth. We can not mess it up with pollution and such, because we only have one Earth. The decisions we make do not just affect all 7.5 billion human beings on this planet, but also every living and breathing creature. We need to elect a president that has those same views, a president that is selfless enough to put the world before themselves, a president that has a heart for every living thing. These decisions that the president will make about certain regulations to our climate will influence not just their nations but nations around the world. Neither presidential candidate have strong enough views on this topic. Considering Hillary’s shady support of fracking, and Trump’s complete denial of the existence of global warming, we are in trouble.
Lilly (Asheville, NC)
Brook, I agree with you and Hillary, climate change is not something you should ignore. Along the lines of what you said I think that Trump is oblivious of the fact that climate change is real and may not want to admit that it is happening and, I agree with you that it is hard to believe but definitely should not be put behind and said as not being a priority. A good plan for climate change will be necessary for the next president to be successful.
Riley K. (Vermont)
Climate change is a real thing and the fact people don't believe that is exists or don't care about it makes me upset. It scares me that we are so dependent on fossil fuels. The fact that the companies that sell all the coal or gas have so much influence in the government, makes our situation even more complicated because it prevents our leaders from doing very much against climate change. Climate change is something that is going to effect the entire world and America is the number one contributor to green house gas emissions in history, yet we are hardly doing anything to lessen our contributions. The simplest things, like finishing food and unplugging things, can be done by individuals to decrease their emissions, just more awareness needs to be brought to the cause, to make more people care and believe.
Logan (NC)
Riley, I totally agree that climate change is a huge problem all around the world and especially our country. It affects ecosystems and habitats which is changing the fate for our world as we know it. And although I see where you’re coming from with your opinion that most of the pollution and climate change is caused by humans and businesses, it would affect our economy a lot, even after switching to less harmful ways of conserving our planet.
Sarah Smith (Colorado)
Climate change is not something that affects a group or a specific demographic; it affects everyone all the time. Just recently, we had a model UN conference discussing this issue and here are some of our ideas of solutions:
1) establish a renewable energy increasing system based on of a percentage of renewable energy already used. For example, let's say every country has to add 50% more renewable energy to what they already use. If the country uses 10% renewable energy, they must add another 5% to their renewable energy consumption. If they have 10 hydroelectric power plants, they must build 5 more.
2) The same process as listed above would be used to decrease the amount of nonrenewable energy.
3) More infrastructure should be built for bike riding like in Amsterdam
Grayson Scott (North Carolina)
There is a lot of controversy about climate change right now. I believe that it is the biggest threat the world has faced. The thing that could possibly kill our chance to stop global change, and our survival is each other, and in my opinion, Donald Trump. We have scientific proof from NASA, we have been outside in the past 10 years (I hope), and we have common sense. The fate of our country, and even possibly our world, has a lot of weight on who our next president is and what they are going to do about climate change. Donald Trump blames China for creating global warming as a hoax, and says he will have even more fossil fuel drilling be done. If he is elected president, our country, unless global warming solves itself, will be doomed. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, says she is putting global warming into the heart on the campaign. I believe that she will try hard to permit the nation's use of fossil fuels. “If there is going to be a limit on how much fossil fuels someone can use, how are we going to get around, I mean, auto-mobiles are America's biggest source on travel?” I believe that America's car dealers should invest into making only electric cars, then the price would shoot down, and the burning of fossil fuels would reduce greatly.
Maxx Floyd (Fsi School Of innovation)
Donald. J Trump’s view on climate change was that it was a hoax created by China, and as for his plan for the oil industry he would stop using foreign oil and make America’s untapped oil reserves that will bring more money to the U.S, instead of other counties. He plans to counter President Obama’s plan to use less fossil fuels and to build more solar panels. All though I don’t agree with Mr. Trumps view to oil changes, there's still many people who believe that he will bring more fame and power to the U.S. Others who side with Hillary, or are not supportive to any of the candidates still have views on who is better or worse. On Hillary's side of things she thinks that climate change is an urban threat If we don´t subdue it or completely get rid of climate change plans to improve the ecosystem by using more solar panels and windmills and other forms of electricity generators. She also plans to cut the use of fossil fuels and by 80% by the year 2050. ¨I won’t let anyone take us backward, deny our economy the benefits of harnessing a clean energy future...¨ (Hillary, November 29, 2015). While both have their own opinion and choice to follow whether it be good or bad, we both have our own decision to vote for whoever we want.
Skylar Dailey (Vermont, USA.)
I feel that climate change is one of the most important issues that we should be focusing on as not only a nation but worldwide. However, that doesn't make it one of the most popular. So many people are dismissing this issue and don't feel that it will even really affect them. This saddens and sickens me all at the same time. This planet is all we have and I wish people would realize without earth conservation - there is no human life preservation. Our world is focused on the unimportant issues rather than on where we we need to be starting. There is no continents, countries, cities, economies, societies, cultures, or governments without an earth to build those things upon. We will be swallowed whole by this planet one day and it seems that no one cares. Some would argue that the world is pass the point of healing and our efforts towards earth conservation are pointless but I disagree. If each and every single one of us humans or even just half of the population took steps to become more energy efficient and actually put their hearts into saving our planet we could make significant advancements and better our future of sustaining human life here.
Annaleise Lukens (Asheville, North Carolina)
I agree with you that climate change is a major issue and it is really sad to see it being dismissed as a “hoax”, or made up. The earth is our only home and instead of trying to find a suitable planet for us to move to when earth is no longer inhabitable, we need to focus on preserving and protecting our home. People get hung up on whether humans are to blame or not, but we are most definitely at fault for hunting and killing animals to endangerment or extinction. We also are too selfish and money-oriented to switch from harmful natural gas to renewable energy, that in the long run, would probably save a lot of money. Too many people think that as long as they aren’t around to see it, they don’t care if the world ends. We have to think about future generations, and how our children will live to see the world. We don’t want the people we love to suffer because of our greed. This is bigger than us, and we need to take a stand to stop it.
Aidan Hunt (New Jersey)
I agree that climate change is a very important topic for the election of 2016 and the next 4 years. I think Hillary's opinion and ideas on what to do about climate change are well thought out and responsible. Climate change in the future and it is as important or more important than we say it will be unless we do something about it. As Skylar Dailey said that “So many people are dismissing this issue.” As bad as this sounds not only does Donald trump ignore the fact that this is a problem and isn’t trying to help clean the environment for the future, he intends to do the opposite. Donald Trump, “Has called for more fossil fuel drilling and fewer environmental regulations” (Katherine Schulten). I see this as ignorant and quite sad that Donald Trump will ruin the environment for our children and grandchildren just to make himself rich. Supporting what Annaleise Lukens stated, “We also are too selfish and money-oriented”
Maximillian Ortega (Beaverton, Oregon)
I think that global warming is a big issue that needs to be solved as fast as possible because many species are going extinct because of humans. And many people *cough**trump**cough* think that global warming is not real, and that its only the change of the earth. But there is research and data on the idea. So I believe that we should solve it before going to other planets.
Sam L (MD)
Global warming needs to be stopped. The woIrld is releasing 2.4 million pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmoshere every second, that is about 40 billion pounds a year. If global warming continues at this rate, and we don't do something about it, in 20 years the ice caps will be gone completely. Due to this, the sea level will rise 216 ft. Here is link to a map of our nation if this happens http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/09/rising-seas/if-ice-melted-map
This also means all your penguins, polar bears, and all the other animals that live in cold places will go extinct.Yea, this should be at the top of our list of problems to be solved.By putting up solar panels, wind turbines, and electric dams, we would be one of the most clean nations in the world, and given enough time, our nations wouldn't have to rely on coal and oil to fuel us.In the long run this will create more jobs building these ways of getting energy, and it will save the nation money because ewe wouldn't have to buy coal and oil any more. We need to get to work and solve this problem.
Young Inucker (MD)
I agree we do need to get work and solve this problem. You came up with very good solutions to the problem. I especially liked you're idea about putting up solar panels, wind turbines and electric dams.
Olivia Y (San Rafael, CA)
Sam I think you have a very good point regarding the reality of this situation. Not many people have a grasp on this subject and it is refreshing to see something such as this online and not the opposite proposed by Donald Trump. Many republicans do not care for climate change and its effects on our planet, this means they are blind to the subject that will soon come back to bite us in the rear end.Renewable energy is not concern to the republican party as thy are making so much money from non-renewable sources. Like you said, we need to implement wind turbines, solar panels, and other forms of renewable energy i America mores strongly. For if we don't, we will end up losing polar bears, penguins, ice caps, and this wonderful planet .
Emily C (California)
I agree with Sam that Climate Change is the most pressing issue right now, because if it continues sea level and temperature rise will cause mass extinction and overpopulation of habitable areas. If we let it progress to this point, none of the current issues like a lack of jobs will matter. As WWF says, not just polar bears and penguins and other arctic species will be harmed. Sea life such as the marine turtles inhabiting the waters off the coast of Africa will also suffer and could become extinct. https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/effects-of-climate-change
Michael Distifeno (Oregon)
Climate Change is the largest issue of our generation. We will be dealing with it our whole lives and it will still be a problem long after we are dead. Unless drastic action is taken immediately then the problem will continue to grow and cause more problems than already predicted. The saddest thing for me personally is I have missed the chance to see the Great Barrier Reef. Coral bleaching caused by rising temperatures has killed the oldest living thing on earth. This is directly because of us. Think about that. We killed a million year old ecosystem home to some of the most divers fauna and flora on the planet in about a thousand years. If that doesn't convince you Climate Change is an enormous issue then I don't know what else will.
Julie (France)
I'm agree with you, the climate change and it's a very big cause. The pollution, the global warming and the deforestation cause more extension's animal. So the next generation won't know polar bear for example because the ice cap are melting. It's urgent to create more organization to protect animal and the environment.
Elijah.w (Franklin school of innovation)
Climate Change which could have many causes to how it happened but it is a really important topic because it could possibly melt the polar icecaps i think that there is multiple right answers but could also be caused by the sun itself, i'm not sure what but both sides could be right, i really have no stand on either sides at all. But i see how each side would think differently.
Tiffany (Maryland)
I can see where you’re coming from and that you don’t necessarily feel strongly towards either view of climate change, however I believe that it should be more of a concern to you. I get that the sun may be contributing to climate change a little bit, but people are also contributing to it in most of our modern day technology, and we have a duty to take care of our planet. Climate change is affecting us today, making not only oceans rise but heatwaves and temperature drops. One can also argue that we need new and cleaner fuel sources because the world is running out of fossil fuels anyway. I agree with Clinton that finding cleaner energy sources should be America’s priority for this problem, and you should think about it too.
Ryan Caughey (Kensington MD)
I think we need to do something about climate change because it is causing global warming changes in weather patterns and where some animals are found mostly fish are being affected. The government needs to work on getting america into a clean energy era by cutting uses of fossil fuels and need s to place more solar panels. If we use clean fuel sources we do not have to buy fuels from other countries which means we will basically get free energy because if we have our own means of obtaining energy we do not need to buy fuels from other countries. I mean do we really need fuels from other countries if we have our own? Also clean energy will help clean up the atmosphere and help get weather patterns back to normalish. It will also help animals habits such as the forests in california if their is less heat than it is less likely to have forest fires. One other thing is it will help animals that react to heat and temperature in their daily lives or migration patterns. In conclusion i think that we need to focus on climate change otherwise us “ highly intelligent animals” will be the cause of our own extinction. Forget the meteor that killed the dinosaurs how about the stupid humans that caused their own extinction because they did not care about climate change and they ended up being cooked alive and sprinkled with some spices for flavor.
Declan Mettee (Asheville, NC)
I agree with you fully that climate change is an issue and it needs to be dealt with. I think that your solutions to these problems will help with global climate change. As for your idea of cutting fossil fuel, it is a good idea, but in my opinion it would be hard to pull together the resources necessary to do it, which may also be a problem with some of your other ideas. Those action plans would need a lot of people behind them to make all of them possible. Your final statement is a funny and scary one. You said that us “highly intelligent animals” will put ourselves to extinction. I think that this will be true if we don’t act on climate change immediately.
Grayson Scott (North Carolina)
Ryan, I agree that global warming is a big problem. I think it should be the center of attention for our next president. This is the biggest threat our world has ever faced, besides each other, and what's ironic, is that the only way to stop global warming is if we all work together. If global warming is not stopped, our world is doomed, it will make earth, a planet that was perfectly fine and was able to make a substantial environment and atmosphere for all living things, a pit like Venus. Venus was, according to research, just like earth, but global warming affected it, and now it is a pit of lava and dust. We do not want earth to be unsubstantial for human life. Stop global warming, and for the sake of the planet, vote Hillary.
R.P. (Oregon)
I agree with you Ryan. Climate change is an urgent threat that needs to be dealt with. If we are being honest and sticking to the facts, it won't be for a long time that the human race goes extinct. While it is a possibility, I believe that if everyone works hard to fix this mess we have made for ourselves, we could save ourselves from this fate we have determined for our kind. Also, clean energy isn't the only thing that could save us. There are many other contributors, such as cow farming, agriculture and it's runoff, and plastic and micro beads. If we were to try to fix all the problems we have created over the years, rather than just our energy problem, I believe we can save the earth. And not become human entrees.
Emma Mohammed (North Carolina)
Climate change should be an important issue to the children and teens of today, seeing as we are the millennials. All of our future lives depend on the Earth. I believe that we should try to help our earth, become more eco-friendly. Climate change has been an issue for a long time. Our atmosphere has been heating up and causing global temperature to rise. This is due to the Greenhouse Effect, which is when our atmosphere traps something called solar radiation. Solar radiation is caused by gasses like carbon dioxide and methane. Climate change is changing our eco-systems and making life on Earth take a turn for the worst. In our current election we have two very different opinions on climate change. One candidate, Mr. Trump, doesn’t believe in climate change. He states “I am not a believer in climate change”, and while I’m trying to comprehend this candidate’s position, I don’t fully understand it. The other candidate, Senator Clinton, believes that climate change is real and we can fix it. She would like to “Produce energy from renewable sources”. I agree with Senator Clinton because our world can be helped, we just need to make fixing it a priority. If we help our Earth, our futures are more ensured.
Toe Cheese (Chinese)
I disagree with this because I believe that the world cant be helped. I believe we have to help ourselves. By helping ourselves we can have clean and energetic living space. I believe this helps us more than it helps te planet.
Ethan Quittner (North Carolina)
Energy use has been a large topic throughout recent years. I believe that we should be investing more thought into hydrogen powered engines. Hydrogen as a fuel source is great seeing as it is just hydrogen it couldn’t produce carbon dioxide. Our current fuel source oil creates carbon dioxide because at its base form oil is Carbon or C. To create the fire needed in a combustion engine you also need oxygen or O to fuel the fire. This means when the chemical reaction occurs the carbon in the oil bonds with the oxygen creating CO2 or carbon dioxide. So if we replace oil with hydrogen we remove the needed carbon to make CO2 and instead we make water vapor because hydrogen and oxygen bonded is H20 or water. The problem with hydrogen however is its reactivity. It can be highly explosive which was seen in the tragedy of the Hindenburg which was a hydrogen filled balloon. We could use solar or wind but they aren’t as yielding as the current methods of carbon burning. However clean energy may be negative economically. It can shut down many oil businesses and could put countries who rely on oil exporting like Saudi Arabia in a financial crisis. This may be why such things have not been a national focus because a good number of politicians are sponsored and controlled by oil companies. To think idealistically we need to become a nation of scientists not businessmen and not focus on money and more on bettering our society and saving the planet.
Cooper Thiel (Asheville, NC)
I disagree with you Ethan Quittner because clean energy won't help us anymore than the energy we have now, the reason I think this is because to Donald Trump climate change is a hoax made by the Chinese and that is why people want to switch to clean energy fuels instead of oil, coal etc. People may say the we have data from NASA but what if the Chinese have hacked NASA’s data trying to affect america and make them afraid of climate change, influencing the Americans to find solutions. China will probably produce a clean energy that can hack all of or electronics controlling everything we see and know. But I understand why you would want this because once we make it happen then it will be easier to produce than fossil fuels, I do want clean energy just in case Trump is lying to us which may be but he doesn't usually lie, but I still think that clean energy is helpful even if it is a hoax
F Lucas (San Fransico)
Hey I really liked your statement and thought that it had some great valid points. My name is Lucas and I'm from a school of environmental leadership called MarinSEL. We focus on climate change and helping the environment. It's refreshing to know there are people out in the world who care and like to share their thoughts on how we can change. Keep spreading positivity and talking about this worldwide issue.
S. Ward (Asheville, NC)
Climate change is not a hoax. The Earth’s temperature is increasing, but cars and fossil fuel are not the main issue, the meat industry is. The greenhouse gases that are released through the agricultural industry of livestock is greater than assumed. A U.N report claims, “Cattle-rearing generates more global warming greenhouse gases, as measured in CO2 equivalent, than transportation, and smarter production methods, including improved animal diets to reduce enteric fermentation and consequent methane emissions, are urgently needed”. Also, in the documentary Cowspiracy, it states, “methane gas from livestock is 86 times more destructive than carbon dioxide from vehicles”. Hillary believes that cutting energy waste, reducing America's oil consumption, and clean renewable energy will help to slow climate change. Hillary’s ideas are great, but I believe livestock needs to be the nation's biggest focus of awareness.
Declan Mettee (Asheville, NC)
Climate Change is a very serious issue, our global temperature has been increasing each year getting more and more serious. Our presidential nominees need to make big decisions if they get elected about climate change. Things like cutting down carbon emissions and making sure cars are more environmentally friendly. Our country produces 16% of all the global carbon emissions which is a big number, us being the 2nd biggest emission producing country in the world. Donald Trump wants to create a country in which energy is turned into jobs and used towards a bigger amount of money being made. And Hillary’s plan is to make energy production safe, clean, and efficient. These things would all be nice but it would be hard to make all of these things happen. Any way any candidate can, I would like for our country to have a president that would make pollution and climate change a top priority.
Kayla S. (North Carolina)
Declan, I completely agree with you! Both of our candidates have different views on climate change and I wish there was an easier way to reduce the global warming that’s happening every day. There are other ways that all of the people, worldwide help with this. Every year we celebrate “Earth Day” on April 22 and we try to make the earth a better and cleaner place. I think this holiday needs to be recognized more like, extending the holiday to a week. I’m not saying it would be like Spring cleaning but that we should be outside doing productive things to help with this issue. You pointed out how both Trump and Hillarys ideas aren’t bad, and they aren’t. But, would you rather be making money or improving the earth as one?
Maya Philipp (Asheville NC)
Global warming and climate change is a very serious problem that needs to be addressed immediately. There are many variables that contribute to this cause and have possibility of being fixed. For example, fracking is a threat to our health and water and the gases can have a harmful effect on other organisms. Such daily things as burning coal and even the gases that come off of our tires when we drive have a very harmful and dangerous effect on the atmosphere and air pollution. The year 2016 holds the record for hottest yet in 136 years according to NASA With temperature rapidly rising, this can harm entire ecosystems. Ice caps are melting and are forcing mammals to swim more than usual. Melting of ice caps also creates a rise in sea level that could cause flooding along coasts. Finding ways to create new technology to keep the temperature from rising could also be an economic boost. So if all these possibilities are true, why hasn’t anyone addressed it yet?
Maddox M. (Asheville, NC)
Climate Change is becoming an ever growing concern for people worldwide. Decades of research has gone into defining the problem, and the solution for reversing some of the already life-threatening effects of Climate Change. As a nation, we are consuming more and more oil than ever before, couple that with a viciously growing population, and our dependence on these natural resources will result in an even bigger problem: finding a source of clean energy.

Sooner or later, we will run out of petroleum, and while it is difficult to imagine a world without such resources, we must invest in clean energy sources, like wind and solar, so that we will be prepared when the inevitable becomes a reality. Our continued dependence on petroleum may be cheaper and easier to continue in the present, but doing so would be ignorant of the future of mankind.

We have waited far too long to stand up and make a difference. Our generation has been born into a world of pollution and self-destruction. We must fight for clean energy, renewable resources, and a better world for future generations.

In response to William Hove

Climate change is an issue that is either thought of passionately to change, or almost not thought of at all. I agree with William Hove when states that “Donald Trump believes that climate change is a lie and he says that we have too many environmental restrictions.” These statements are nowhere close to being valid whatsoever. Looking at the world today, it is pretty much falling apart, and someone like Donald Trump who doesn’t believe in global warming is ignorant to the issue at hand. I mean President Obama believes that “climate change is the greatest long term threat facing the world.” Planet heating emissions such as cars and coal plants are slowly but surely ruining our environment and I don’t understand how uninformed Trump is. Clinton has put climate change ahead of many things in her campaign, and I’m not saying it needs to be the top issue at hand, but at least she believes it is an actual problem and that we need to do something about it. I like when Hove says “some solutions to this problem is to use cleaner, renewable energy sources like wind or solar energy.” This is true because it is cheaper and tremendously better for the environment. Climate change is a problem, and it is slowly taking over the world little by little.
Max Smith (NY)
I completely agree with Meghan's assertion that climate change is an unavoidable problem. We, as a country, cannot ignore the deterioration of the ozone layer and the resulting effects. Should this deterioration continue, it will doubtlessly lead to serious problems. It is also extremely well supported that this deterioration is the result of carbon dioxide emissions from large industries, cars, and many other things. That is why it is crucial that the means of producing energy be shifted from fossil fuels to other clean means, such solar or wind power. Despite the damage that has already been done, it is not too late to reduce the effects of the human race on climate change.
Isaak R (California)
The comments on this topic are mostly about climate change but they don’t say the fact of energy that is causing the climate change problem. Electricity in America produces the most greenhouse gases (30%) with the burning of fossil fuels like coal. We need an alternative power source that doesn’t produce greenhouse gases or less than burning fossil fuels. If you are totally against Climate change and want to slow climate change then you will turn to any alternative power source that will stop the release of greenhouse gases no matter what other negative factors they produce. Such as solar power it releases no greenhouse gases but it does take up a lot of land that can be used for something, such as cropland, and it also is associated with habitat loss for animals. In my opinion climate change is a huge problem and anything we can do will help our whole world to sustain it as long as we can for future generations.
YUNG MATRIX (Clinton,WA)
Today, the disturbing reality that humans have had a very unhealthy effect on the earth becomes more and more obvious with each passing moment. My belief is that the health of the human race is very directly related to the health of the planet which nurtures us, whether we realize it or not. One of the worst things about climate change is that it is not the only way humans have been mistreating the Earth. The truth is that the effects of the current state of human civilization are devastating for the creatures who lovingly share this planet with us. Estimates for the amount of species wiped out by human activities range into the thousands, and some species have gone extinct before we even discovered them! Clearly the human species has not shown proper respect to the planet and the creatures that have allowed us to thrive.
E.K. (MD)
I agree with what you commented. Human species haven't shown proper respect to the planet. Yet, there are some situations and actions that have been taken in order to help the 'climate change' situation. The government itself have helped, for example, many house-owners economically in order to change to geothermic energy. The government paid 1/3 of the cost of geothermal units, motivating the citizens to change, but also highlighting the importance of that change. What's more, there are many groups that fight and protest against climate change. Groups like Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Idle No More, Union of Concerned Scientists etc.
Shelby Zeilender (Asheville, North Carolina)
Climate change is an interesting issue. On one hand, some people think it could mean the end of our world. On the other hand, some people think it doesn’t exist.
Hillary Clinton sides with those that believe it is a drastic issue. She thinks “the catastrophe that would result from unchecked climate change”, could be detrimental. Hillary believes climate change could lead to awful consequences, and it could seriously affect the world.
The opposite opinion is expressed by Donald Trump. He believes that climate change in fact, doesn’t exist at all. Trump thinks it was created by the Chinese as a hoax. “Global warming was created by and for the Chinese” (Politifact). This idea encompasses that it isn’t an issue at all. “It's a hoax. I mean, it's a money-making industry, okay? It's a hoax, a lot of it” (Politifact).
In my own personal opinion, I agree with Madame Secretary. While Donald Trump calls this “nonsense” I believe this issue could be detrimental to the future generations of the world. An issue like this cannot be ignored, not when the consequences are so dangerous. I believe a solution has to be developed, one that embodies the future as the goal. If this problem isn’t attended to, we may not have a future to look forward to.
Sally H (Asheville, NC)
I agree with you Shelby and I wonder why Trump says that climate change is a hoax. Can’t he see that this is a problem that needs to find a resolve. How I think that we can cut down on the use of plastic bags , ride bikes and pick up trash. I want you to believe that climate change is a very serious subject. We need to take care of it immediately. What Shelby says is the truth, this is a catastrophe.
Connor Phillips (North Carolina)
Climate change, you either think it’s an important issue or that it’s false. Hillary Clinton believes it’s a problem and Trump believes it is not important and says he will take away environmental restrictions. I believe that whoever becomes president will greatly impact the environment, for the better or worst. I believe that climate change is important and we need to use a more clean energy sources like solar panels and to try and get other countries to follow. We also need to stop drilling for fossil fuels and burning coal. Global warming doesn’t just destroy animals eco-systems, but also will make it harder to grow plants in the warmer weather and mess up the country's economy. We should be a role model for other countries to follow.
William Hove (Asheville)
Climate change is a serious issue that has been talked about for a very long time. There are many people that are already aware of this issue but there are many who aren’t aware of it still even with the dramatic rise in global temperature that still continues to rise quicker. Donald Trump believes that climate change is a lie and he says we have too many environmental regulations. That is nowhere close to true. The cause of the rise in global temperature is emissions from factories, cars, deforestation and coal power plants. The emissions scandal with Volkswagen where their models with TDI engines have a system in them that lets them cheat on state emissions tests may be contributing to the rise in climate change due to the increase in emissions without owners even knowing of it. Emissions don’t only contribute to global warming, they also cause health problems (such as lung cancer and asthma) because many of those pollutants are also toxic to us humans. Some solutions to this problem is to use cleaner, renewable energy sources like solar or wind energy. Another solution is that car companies can make cars that are more fuel efficient and have lower emissions. These solutions can also save money because we can save more money and use it for solutions to other important issues.
Liam (Washington)
Life is ingenious; it has been thriving since 100 million years after liquid water was present on the surface, but never before has Earth been host to a species which has so much power to change its’ natural processes as humankind. Whether one believes that climate change is a direct result of humankind and our ravenous search for more resources or whether one believes that climate change is occurring as a natural process of the earth, the fact remains that the earth is warming.
The gradual warming of the earth is supported by more than 175 years of data, stored in NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network; it is demonstrated nearly every day that our global climate is warming. Whether this is on account of human industrial activity or not is irrelevant - the fact remains that we have the ability to decrease this change in climate which imperils us. The Chairman of the US Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), brought a snowball onto the senate floor last year, but this disputes none of the evidence for climate change; in fact, it only demonstrates the willful ignorance of many of our leaders in regards to science.
Annabelle (Princeton)
The climate change debate is like a case study in perspective. For almost all of us, the extreme effects of climate change are in the far future or far away. Pacific islands being submerged, obscure species of frogs becoming endangered, the unimaginable idea that one day Manhattan might be underwater. At the same time, the economic ramifications of clean energy are immediate. Reducing the use of fossil fuels, investing money in alternative energies-- our economy responds directly to the decisions we make, and in real-time.

What is difficult for us to see is that the far-off and far-away will not remain so forever. There will come a time when these extreme consequences are on our doorstep but by then, it's too late. We need to be able to look beyond and make choices that will benefit us in the long-term, even if they may have negative effects in the present and near-future.

The idea that big nations, especially ours, will actually risk some of its current economic prosperity in the hopes for a more stable climate in future decades and centuries is almost laughable, but it's what needs to be done. The Paris climate agreement was a huge step in securing that, as well as Obama's Clean Power Plan, and hopefully these will set a precedent of taking the future into careful consideration while making decisions about the present.
Alexandra V. (California)
I agree with Annabelle that if we do not make any changes to our lifestyles, climate change will continue to have worse and worse effects as time goes on, but we already are experiencing extreme consequences.
It is widely believed that the world is in the midst of its 6th mass extinction. We know this based upon our carbon dioxide emission levels. When looking back upon earth's previous five mass extinctions, there has always been a huge peak in the atmosphere's C02 levels. If you look at our current C02 emission levels, our levels are at an all time high that this world has never experienced.
This is greatly due to the impacts that we have had on our environment. We are burning fossil fuels, clearing land, and destroying ecosystems at an alarming rate. According to the United Nations Environmental Program, approximately 150 to 200 species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals go extinct everyday. It is predicted that by 2050 more than 50% of the world's species will have gone extinct.
This isn't an issue to deal with in the years to come, this is an issue to deal with now. We invoked this mass extinction and we can't just idle by waiting for someone else to fix it. We need to do something now or our world will be in ruins sooner than you may think.
Max Cassee (Washington)

I agree completely I think that this is a problem we need to fix today not 20 years down the road. I saw a post on facebook the other day that really opened my eyes to how bad this extinction crisis is, it was a post showing multiple video tapes and live footage of species that have gone extinct and it was incredibly sad to see these animals that look so at place and lively and know that they no longer roam this planet. My question to you is how do you propose we educate these people that believe global warming is a “hoax”. How can we make progress and steps in the right direction if all these naysayers and nonbelievers are holding us back?
Annabelle (Princeton)
Max-- I find myself equally frustrated at the thought of convincing the skeptics of the legitimacy of climate change-- at this point, when there is a consensus among the scientific experts of almost every nation in the world, I can't think of anything else to be done. I wonder if these people are truly in denial of the scientific proof for climate change, or if they choose to take that stance as a reason for opposing legislation that may harm their industries. If this is the case, then it's a matter of putting their own personal gain above the safety of the world, and though it sounds pessimistic I don't believe any amount of education will change that.

Alexandra and Max-- Unfortunately, I think those strong oppositions to climate change may not relent until conditions worsen in a more close-hitting way. This isn't to say we should stop trying to educate-- because more and more alarming examples of its effects are being realized every day-- but I don't see how else people will come to see that climate change is real and dangerous when they have already been presented with all of the facts. I think they turning point will be when the issue becomes more than facts and begins to have emotional and tangible value for involved parties, which we can only hope isn't too late.
Shelby Zeilender (Asheville, North Carolina)

I agree that climate change is a drastic issue, and I think that we need to try to do something to stop it. I think that we need to look at alternate sources of energy production, and begin to utilize the eco-friendly technologies that could greatly assist us in finding ways to slow global warming. We must work very hard to try to stop the problems that we have added into society through our innovations, but after waiting this long, we may not be able to do this. I think that changes can only be made if we start working on making them in our small communities. I think that global warming and climate change are issues that can only be resolved by people working together to try to combat their part of the problem. I don’t understand how someone could think that global is not a real and urgent issue when we have evidence that it is a real and growing problem from NASA. I think that we must do something about this problem, and we need a commander in chief that will acknowledge that we have growing issues in the world, and they are not a hoax.
Quinn McMullan (Asheville, NC)
Climate change is a growing issue in the world, and there are several opposing views on it in the presidential race. One of these is that it is a hoax, even though NASA has evidence that it is a real and growing problem. Another view is that it is an actual problem that we need to address as soon as we can. I believe that climate change is a problem that we need to look at and be concerned about. I think that we should be researching alternate sources of energy and ways to cut down on energy usage across the globe. Countries around the world need to come together to try to solve this problem, and not just continue to put it off. Global warming is killing animals and leaving negative effects on us and where we live. I think that we need to be conscious of the fact that the innovations of the human race are becoming a problem to the environment, and overall are becoming what we don’t want to happen to our society and our planet that we call home, but continue to destroy it anyways.
Shelby Zeilender (Asheville, North Carolina)
Quinn, I completely agree with your thinking, but your point brings up an often mentioned topic; are we too late? I believe (as you mentioned) resources should be directed toward finding these ‘alternate sources of energy’. However, we’ve already gone so far, destroyed so much, is our world really salvageable? I understand how dark that thought is, but when you look at the statistics the problem is drastic. To take pollution as an example, the evidence is shocking. “Over 1 million seabirds and 100,000 sea mammals are killed by pollution every year” (Do Something Foundation). Evidence such as this implies we are at the bottom of spiraling climate change, and we are almost falling off.
As you mentioned, we must be aware of the so called ‘innovations of the human race’ being detrimental to our environment. I hate to think of all of the cars on our roads or all of the factories constantly making more, more, more. Is that the fate of the human race? Will this desire for ‘more’ be the death of us? Eventually will we have taken too much? Destroyed too many trees? Killed too many animals? To some of us, this sounds like a death sentence, for others this is a call to action. Is this problem preventable?
Maya Philipp (Asheville NC)
Quin, I completely agree with you. Climate change is one of today's biggest problems that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Finding an alternative source of energy wouldn’t just help the planet, it would also open up more job opportunities. People could find jobs working on solar panels or researching ways to keep the planet safe and clean. Some negative effects would be the melting ice caps, and some say that could lead to the next ice age with all the cold water evaporating. There isn’t really evidence on that though. An other problem with ice caps melting could be a rise in sea level which would flood coasts and create damage. While the human race is spending all their time on new iphones and TV’s, we should spend more time focusing on what really needs to get done like saving the planet.
Hunter Newman (Washington)
Climate change is a fear among many civil citizens pearsonally our earth is being polluted every where every day no matter what we do weather it is getting rid of all green houses or its picking up tash along the highway you can't stop people from polluting the earth and polluting the air. Our environment has created a system to take pollution out of the air trees plants so on and so fourth in conclusion the earth is a self sustaining place that will protect its self.
Brianna M (DE)
I disagree entirely. First, i would like to address the fact that neither green houses nor trash along highways are a main cause of global warming. Secondly, we have inhibited a great number of polluting factors by merely placing restrictions on things like plastic packaging and carbon emissions. Lastly, our environment most definitely did not in any way create a system to take pollution out of the air. You support this statement by referencing to trees and plants, yet plants and trees merely consume Carbon Dioxide (which is produced by all living organisms without polluting the air) when producing sugars through photosynthesis. This system designed to "filter" the air in some ways, but in no way does it remove pollutants like methane or nitrogen. The earth has been self sustaining for centuries without bound, yet recently it has been deteriorating at exponential rates. The earth has no way of protecting itself, we have destroyed its natural defenses.
Itsuki Takei (California)
I agree with you the fact that climate change is a fear among many civil citizens personally, but I don't agree with what you said about the cause of the climate change and others. First, green houses and trashes along the streets are not the main cause of the climate change. It is the pollution from cars and burning fossil fuels that is causing our planet to increase its temperature. Secondly, trees and plants do not have the ability to get rid of pollution from the air. What it does is take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. I think we need to burn less fossil fuels and create energy from renewable resources such as solar, water, wind energy.
Grace Johnson (Chester VT)
I completely agree with Brianna. "The earth has no way of protecting itself, we have destroyed its natural defenses." is a great way to phrase what's going on in our ecosystems. We need to come together and work on the future generations to make sure that they are efficient and won't pollute the Earth anymore than it already is.
Love C. (California)
While I do agree that our future president should be at least aware of climate change, I also support that governments should implement more plans for solving the problem. As a dilemma that has been facing the world for years, global warming will also affect the near future’s economy. In fact, President Obama believes that climate change is “the greatest long-term threat facing the world...already manifesting itself.” As economic growth and greenhouse emissions increase, there is little concern for the prosperity of the future. If climate change is not controlled, the succeeding generations will cripple in opportunity because of the drained and polluted environment caused by their ancestors. Some may assert that climate change is currently not as big of a problem than it seems; however, the caused damage is becoming increasingly significant. Furthermore, national agreement to reduce the effects of climate change is already possible. An article by Coral Davenport reports in regards of the Paris deal of 2015, “once enacted, [cut] emissions by half the levels required to stave off the worst effects of global warming.” This agreement made by nearly 195 nations serves as a beacon of hope for more deals to be made to cut carbon emissions. With corporate decisions, the problem of climate change could be solved faster for not only the present economy, but for the future’s as well.
Nataly Ramos (NY)
I think climate change is an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time,as HIllary Clinton says.Climate change has efffected our plant and has cause a lot of pollution by adding fossil fuels to our planet and trash ."We need renewable sources "as Hillary Clinton said.
Miranda Martinez (Aliso Viejo, CA)
(Part 1) Our planet has been thriving for 4.5 billion years; however, the past couple of centuries humans have been polluting it for the sake of resources.Climate change is affecting the earth as a whole. The Environmental Protection Agency states on their website that, “The impacts of climate change include warming temperatures, increases in the frequency or intensity of some extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. These impacts threaten our health by affecting the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the weather we experience.” Instead of helping the earth, we have factories that pollute the air and ocean, using transportation that has fossil fuels which are harmful to the ground, and billions of tons of trash that have been thrown away casually into the water and on the ground. Our pollution and needs for resources is the cause of temperatures rising, the ice caps melting, deforestation, endangerment of human health and many more. Although we should know better by now, we cannot help think that climate change is affecting us all. Our Earth needs to be saved and to do this we need to join together to limit the amount of unnatural gasses being polluted in the air, conserve energy and trees, and clean up our oceans as well as cities. With the recent candidate debate, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, discussed their ideas to eliminate climate change.
Miranda Martinez (Aliso Viejo, CA)
(Part 2) Our next president will be the leading factor that can change our detrimental use of non-environmentally friendly products. Donald Trump tweeted, “Global warming was created by the Chinese in order to make the U.S. manufacturing non-competitive” showing the limited care for the earth. On the other hand, Hillary Clinton is determined to change the way we live in this country. Clinton had planned on her website that she will, “Launch a $60 billion Clean Energy Challenge, invest in clean energy infrastructure, innovation, manufacturing, and workforce development, and cut methane emissions across the economy.” Her plan is to put billions of dollars on to change the way we use our energy. If the United States has her as a leader, she will help bring awareness to climate change. With her planning to fund a lot of money into solving climate change, there will many more people wanting to help with this riveting problem.
Amy DiMaio (Newark, DE)
I agree with your stance, but believe you did not validate your explanation. You should try using examples of why climate change is defining our generation to strengthen your argument.
H.Sygney (New York)
Climate change is an urgent treat and a defining challenge of our time", as Hillary Clinton said. I don't think human activity is to blame for the climate change, it just the world is changing so much the weather pattern is not the same as it was ten, twenty years ago but as a nation we must think of a way we will handle climate change, like making sure states are prepare for a state of emergency situations such as hurricanes that would cost millions of dollars in damages
Kat Copeland (Aliso Viejo)
The most common claim as to the cause of climate change is human activity. There can be no disputing the fact that our use of fossil fuels since the very first industrial revolution has began a steady increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. The true debate is whether or not carbon dioxide as a “greenhouse gas” actually contains heat in the atmosphere. On a global warming forum, climatologist Richard Keen describes the “greenhouse effect”, or the mechanism by which global warming takes place, stating, “carbon dioxide, or CO2, is nearly transparent to the solar radiation emitted from the sun, but partially opaque to the thermal radiation emitted by the earth.” This postulate supports the theory that carbon dioxide allows heat from the sun into, but not out of our atmosphere. With the interpretation that atmospheric carbon dioxide is indeed the mechanism by which global warming takes place, it can be proven that this increase in CO2 levels is due to human activity. On his interactive website, “Skeptical Science”, John Cook cited evidence stating, “In pre-industrial times over the last 10,000 years, CO2 was relatively stable at around 275 to 285 parts per million. Over the last 250 years, atmospheric CO2 levels have increased by about 100 parts per million.” This is irrefutable evidence that the burning of fossil fuels has had a notable impact on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Kat Copeland (Aliso Viejo)
I understand your point of view, but would like to prompt you: why do you think the world is changing so much? The most common claim as to the cause of climate change is human activity. There can be no disputing the fact that our use of fossil fuels since the very first industrial revolution has began a steady increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Kat Copeland (Aliso Viejo)
(continued) This is irrefutable evidence that the burning of fossil fuels has had a notable impact on the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Taking all of this into account, it should be concluded that humans are the main cause for this relatively rapid climate change that our planet has been experiencing recently. I agree with you that as a nation we should be prepared to deal with these changes and educate the public on the effects that this climate change could cause.
Jenna (Vermont)
As a younger person I worry about the worlds enviorment worsening as I get older. I obviously want my surroundings to be beautiful, safe, and taken care of. Trump wanting to pretty much ignore this problem bothers me because there are polar bears losing their lives/homes/families because we aren't taking proper care of what we should be. I mean yeah it is our Earth itself too because it has already had these kind of problems, but we can help decrease the amount of damage we add.
Jack Singh (New Jersey)
Climate change is a very real issue; Just look at the data. We live in a electric world now. We have access to so much information that we never had before. We can see trends in the recent years of the slow climb of the global temperature. It cannot be debatable that it is occurring. I do not like Donald Trump's thoughts and clear disbelief in this topic. The facts can prove it. In the last few decades, although the weather has been reaching very cold temperatures, the overall global temperature has been rising and this is not debatable whatsoever.
Jessica Liang (California)
I agree with you Jack that climate change is the greatest long-term threat the world faces. It is an imperative issue that requires change starting in everyday tasks. This way the world can be aware of the issue and enacts small changes. President Obama, a large advocate of climate change, has taken action by, “ Enacting roles to cut planet heating omission across much of the United States economy, from cars the coal plants”. Enacting these measures contribute small tasks can gradually help decrease the amount of greenhouse gases in the long run. Every little step builds up and makes a great impact. Prolonging our ignorance against this critical issue only creates complications in the future. Changes need to be made immediately. Countries around the world have taken initiative for change, “Representatives of 195 nations reached a landmark...to lowering planet-warming greenhouse emissions to help stave off the most drastic effects of climate change”. Because this is a global issue, people will need to come together to compromise and find a solution. There is no instantaneous fix. There has been much opposition to this controversial topic because there is no situation we can see right now that is affected. However just by looking at the last decade’s drastic weather changes, the amount of polar ice caps that have melted, it is apparent that human activity affects our climate.

Alexander L (New York)
Climate change was never a hoax, it has been a long-term threat and I think Trump should come to that realization. Since the dawn of the planet, the surface's temperature rises due to the sun's energy reaching earth causing the change. Even changes in the reflectivity of earth’s atmosphere and surface proves that climate change is real and we need to find ways to work our way around it.
Ashley (California)
I agree with the idea that climate change was never a hoax. Climate change is a real, imposing threat to the future that needs to be acknowledged and dealt with. Climate change is a problem highlighted by the rising temperatures that could lead to severe, catastrophic events such as heavy rainfall and hurricanes. Justin Gills, author of a New York Times article, explains, “As of October 2015, the Earth had warmed by about 1.7 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880, when records begin at a global scale.” 1.7 degrees is a significant amount, and this fact, along with other physical evidence, portrays the appearance of climate change. Due to this increase in temperature, ice caps are melting and ocean levels are rising. The cause? Us. The heat accumulating on Earth is because of the human release of greenhouse gases, and this can be proven through a string of scientific evidence that have been gathered to display Earth’s sensitivity to these greenhouse gases. There is also solid scientific research of the consequences of climate change including erratic weather that will lead to bigger natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, floods, typhoons, and hurricanes.
Ashley (California)
Despite the opposing views that climate change is not an imperative issue, awareness of the severity of climate change is being raised through the advocation of actions to reduce this change. In the background of the Civil Conversation Challenge, Katherine Schulten explains that President Obama “has enacted rules to cut planet-heating emissions across much of the United States economy, from cars to coal plants.” This is just the beginning of the initiative being taken to reduce our carbon footprints on Earth. There are other plans and actions being advocated such as saving more power and consolidating trips to limit carbon emissions. The U.S. is not the only one to realize the initiative we need to take to save our planet from our greenhouse gases. Through the Paris climate agreement, countries around the world have agreed to limit the greenhouse gas emissions. The beginnings of change worldwide is being implemented and this addresses the climate change problem as more important than some people may view it to be. With this much attention and evidence on an issue by countries, political leaders, scientists, and citizens, it is more than just a “hoax”. Despite the opposing views on the impact of climate change, climate change is a genuine issue and has been supported and acknowledged by multiple different sources.

(cont.) Global temperatures have skyrocketed, only serving to exacerbate ongoing droughts. This in turn leads to lower crop yield, detrimentally affecting the environment and economy. The existence of climate change and its effect of global warming is a pressing issue that must be addressed by today’s generation in order to preserve the future of Earth.
Brianna M (Middletown, DE)
Choosing between the two main presidential candidates, I will have to side with Clinton in the fact that climate change is "an urgent threat and a defining challenge" (stated in article, possible questions). The republican party platform accusing the growing number of scientists supporting climate change theories of being extremists offends me greatly. Donald Trump has called global warming a hoax, and to me this is a prime example of his blind arrogance and ignorance. NASA (and numerous similar international agencies) have published article after article explaining the vast negative effects humans are having on our planet. A recent post (found at http://climate.nasa.gov/news/2495/nasa-begins-study-of-australias-great-... supports long time theories of global warming not only effecting cold oceans, but warmer ones as well. Not only are ocean levels rising due to a high magnitude of arctic melting, oceans are becoming warmer and much more acidic. While the global temperature rise has only been around 1.7 degrees (F), ocean acidity has skyrocketed by more than 30% (climate.nasa.gov). For delicate coral reefs, this means deadly bleaching and ecosystem destruction. For those of you who don't care about the oceans which we ourselves came from, perhaps you'll take into consideration how much tourism is drawn by warm waters, clean beaches, and lengthy reefs. With warm, acidic, lifeless oceans there will be no tourism to places like islands which depend entirely on tourist
Brian C. (New Jersey)
I believe climate change is a real problem in today's society. It needs to be addressed and we must attempt to make solutions to halt its path or stop it entirely. Trump is completely wrong and is extremely ignorant on the subject. It is terrible that he thinks this is a Chinese hoax.
Tyson (vermont)
I agree, people have there own opinions about things in whether they believe it or not and I believe in climate change. Trump does not believe in climate change, he believes that it is all a hoax. Thats his own opinion but hats just a claim... Where is all of Trump's evidence to back that up? There Is evidence proving that climate change is real. For example http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
states
"The Earth's climate has changed throughout history. Just in the last 650,000 years there have been seven cycles of glacial advance and retreat, with the abrupt end of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern climate era — and of human civilization. Most of these climate changes are attributed to very small variations in Earth’s orbit that change the amount of solar energy our planet receives." In other words, we need to do something about it.
M. Erwin (NY)
Climate change is another big issue in the U.S. Presidential election of 2016 and also in today's world. It has also been a very important issue for the past decades. Our Democratic nominee, Secretary Clinton believes that there is a climate change problem in the United States and she is right. However , our Republican nominee Mr. Trump believes the opposite. Mr.Trump believes that climate change is a hoax. I agree with Hillary on this issue because I believe climate change is a real problem that needs to be fixed in our country. There is nothing Mr. Trump can do for us concerning this problem being that he doesn't even believe it exists. Things will only continue to get worse.
Rebeca M (California)
I totally agree with you. Climate change is a real problem and humans play a huge role in its severity. There are many factors, such as the rise in global temperature, that serve as the evidence that we're overproducing and overusing. The U.S presidential election of 2016 has discussed this issue and has revealed both of the candidates views. Trump has described it as a hoax, while Clinton has acknowledged its importance to be addressed urgently. On his campaign website, Trump stated,”The oil and natural gas industry supports 10 million high-paying Americans jobs and can create another 400,000 new jobs per year”. But what will happen when the two resources are depleted and won't replenish quickly enough? All the jobs will be lost. This would cause the uprising of many more problems. Hillary, on her campaign website, has promised to, “Defend, implement, and extend smart pollution and efficiency standards, including the Clean Power Plan and standards for cars, trucks, and appliances that are already helping clean our air, save families money, and fight climate change”. By reducing oil and gas companies we can assure a cleaner and safer environment for our future generations. They will run a clean energy economy that will benefit all. It is the right time for a change in our actions.
Liam (Washington)
In concurrence, with you, Rebeca, the Republican energy platform says that all “We support the development of all forms of energy that are marketable in a free economy without subsidies, including coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, and hydropower” and that “coal is an abundant, clean, affordable, reliable domestic energy resource”. This is complete and utter bunk. Various sources, including National Geographic, state that to filter significant proportions of detrimental gases from coal exhaust is nigh on impossible with current technology, and to filter even the proportion of the exhaust we are able to is prohibitively expensive. Namely, they cited that to filter all the CO2 from a coal plant’s exhaust gases might take as much as 30% of the plant’s total energy output. The idea that we may just continue our wanton destruction of the balance of our planet, endangering us and every other life form on it, for the sake of jobs or cheaper electricity is ridiculous. (Cont.)
T.Bindah (NYC)
Trump is ignorant, first of all .Climate change is real .Theres hard core evidence ,for example the ice caps are melting and are way smaller than they were before .Also polar bears are losing their homes .And not to mention that the great increase in melting ice is causing water levels to rise .Most places are already below sea level.
R.Jeanty (NY)
Climate change has always been and will always be an important issue in and for our world and country. I would like to ssupport Hillary Clinton's energy policy. Hillary Clinton's goal of "making America the world's clean energy superpower" and uphold President Obama's climate change policy. President Obama has enacted rules to cut planet-heating emissions across much of the United States economy, from cars to coal plants. She has put climate change at the heart of her campaign and has set ambitious goals for producing energy from renewable sources. Donald Trump has gone further than any other Republican presidential nominee in opposing climate change policy. He often mocks the established science of human-caused change and dismisses it as a hoax.
Isabella S (New Jersey)
Its hard for me to understand how other people do not think that human activity is resulting in climate change. A ton of the things we produce and use as humans hurts the earth immensely and releases horrible gases into the atmosphere. And, each year this just seems to get worse and worse. I also don't understand how a candidate running for the United States doesn't want to take any precaution to prevent climate change. Climate change is a huge issue and we have to take it seriously if we want to all remain alive on this earth. This is such a huge issue that a lot of ignorant people seem to brush to the side and not address properly. But, this issue needs to be discussed and most definitely should have been talked about at the presidential debates.
Amy DiMaio (Newark, DE)
Global warming is the most pressing issue to face our generation. NASA believes that temperatures will rise up to six degrees Celsius in the next century. Global warming is responsible for the atrocity of violent storms we face today such as hurricane Mathew. The now prominent drought ridden areas affect how food will be grown to house a growing population. Our world's population of over seven billion is becoming confined to the few fertile areas we can wedge our skyscrapers in. Rising sea levels endanger the cities of America, and threaten to drown the societies of the Solomon Islands. If we as a global community refuse to change then entire civilizations will vanish into the ocean or scorching air.
Ekansh (Chesterfield)
On the topic of climate change I feel like Hillary's ideas are much better than Trumps. Hillary has put climate change at the heart of her campaign and has set ambitious goals for producing energy from renewable sources. I think that Hillary is doing the right thing because to act against the problem and create some sort plan is the right thing to do, for such a big problem like climate change. On the other hand Trump is opposing the climate change policy. He mocks the established science of human-caused climate change. He has called for more fossil fuel drilling and fewer environmental regulation. I think that what Trump is doing here is wrong because he is not acting against the problem, he is ignoring it and continuing to make it worse.
Lauren Nyberg (California)
I strongly agree with you and the majority of the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton, to set ambitious goals for producing energy from renewable sources. Climate change is an extreme threat against world if not regulated and controlled. “Too Much of a Good Thing”, written by Natalie Angier, declares humans have created “nearly 40,000 pounds a year of carbon dioxide gas that each of us pumps into the atmosphere”. Humans build factories to burn fossil fuels for energy and release it back into the air as carbon dioxide. Hillary Clinton believes there should be more specific regulations and laws that will help control the amount of carbon dioxide released. I recognize that she does not want companies to take advantage of too much freedom and destroy the economy for profit. So she is making plans to make it more difficult for companies to abuse their power. Many Republicans believe Hillary’s plans to solve climate change are outrageous and inaccurate; However, at least she is determined to do something about the problem while Donald Trump overlooks it and calls it a “hoax”.
Lauren Nyberg (California)
Humans are a major cause for climate change because they are recklessly releasing carbon into the atmosphere. Regulations should be given to all factories and companies so they are less likely to do something imprudent. If not regulated, climate change can severely harm the earth and every person and living being on it. Carl Zimmer, writer for New York Times, states humans are not the only living things affected by swiftly changing climate but “Forest Service researchers estimate that 97 percent of the whitebark pine’s natural range will disappear from the United States by 2100”. Trees are becoming an endangered species. Tree preservation has always been greatly disregarded because of the wealth gained by bark and wood. The general population tends to forget that trees are tremendously necessary for a healthy earth. Climate change is a very serious matter that the world needs to come together to prevent.
Bhavya (NJ)
Although proved by many scientist to be real, climate change seems to be of least importance to Trump. He plans to increase drilling for fossil fuels and decrease environmental regulations. Those in industries such as the oil industry love this idea since it would benefit their business greatly. Basically, Trump wants to decrease environmental regulations despite the long term effects of climate change. So I think he is trying to appeal to the people who look at the future in a short term perspective - the people who could care less about the problems the future holds as long as they don’t have to deal with them now. He refuses to take action now to prevent future problems; he’d rather we rush to find solutions when climate change begins to impact our lives significantly. Furthermore, there have been a plethora of studies to prove that humans are the primary cause of climate change. Yet somehow, Trump claims that it is all a hoax.
Amy DiMaio (Newark, DE)

ryan steckline (delaware)
I think that rising sea levels is a scary thing especially since the ice caps continue to melt. I think in the next 100-200 years an island that we know of could be submerged. I don't completely see what you're saying about how global warming is responsible for large storms because large storms have been occurring yearly ever since humans started recording time. Does global warming really cause large storms? Or is it mostly the blame for other things like melting of ice caps, warmer weather, etc..
William Hove (Asheville)
I completely agree with you. Climate change is a very heated topic(literally) because if we don’t do anything soon, the world will eventually be unsafe for us to live on. Reducing our energy consumption and using cleaner, renewable energy sources will help reduce climate change and also save money. If we had cars that were more fuel efficient and polluted a lot less, we would spend less on fuel and reduce climate change.
Nikolai Cange (Brooklyn, New York, United States of America)
Climate change and finding new energy sources have always been an important issue in the past and in today's world. In the 1900s one of the things that kept the United States of America strong were conservation acts and plans passed by Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and other presidents. I am aware that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton & Green Party Representative Jill Stein realize this too. I STRONGLY believe that the citizens and government of the United States of America should work together with the Green Party Movement to propose Eco-Friendly plans. By doing this we would continue on a direction President Obama has set for us, a direction that would conserve the environment we live for generations to come.
Emily (New Jersey)
Climate change is a major issue as it extends past the immediate presidency and effects more than just the united states. Despite this being a global issue i feel America has a responsibility to enact change as we're one of the countries that has the resources to do so.
Ruth (California)
I agree with you, climate change effects more than just the united states, however, I feel that change starts with one. America needs to set an example, so other nations will follow, and in order to do so we need to elect the right presidential candidate. It is up to our new presidential candidates to assess the problem that is at hand. Donald Trump is not a supporter of climate change, he believes climate change to be a “hoax”. Journalist, Coral Davenport puts into words what trump’s plan is, “ he as called for more fossil fuel drilling and fewer environmental regulations”. Trump chooses not to access the problem of climate change. Instead, he wants to contribute more to it, by drilling for more fossil fuels. By doing so, he will be harming our nation through dangerous methane emissions, which cause climate change. On the other hand, candidate, Hillary Clinton has made climate change one of the heart of her campaign.Clinton's website reads, “I won’t let anyone take us backward, deny our economy the benefits of harnessing a clean energy future, or force our children to endure the catastrophe that would result of unchecked climate change”. Hillary is ensuing the people that she will do all she has in her power to address climate change, and better the environment for future generations. Climate change is a massive issue ,and we as a nation need to find ways of solving it.Hillary Clinton is the right leader to guide us on the reduction of climate change.

Climate change has been a problem for decades, but as time goes on it gets worse and worse. For this particular issue I feel as though Hillary Clinton's views make much more sense than Donald Trump's. Trump is basically pretending that climate change doesn't exist when there is scientific evidence and the entire scientific community to prove it. He wants to continue to drill into the ground for fuel and pollute our air. On the other hand, Clinton has identified the problem and has devised a plan to fix it. She wants to find power sources such as solar panels to fuel our country rather than emitting greenhouse gases and fossil fuels into our air. Clinton's proposal will better our country in the long run and overall be a healthier and more productive approach to addressing this issue. Now whether or not she carries through with this plan with her big money donors is the true difference.
Cassandra (California)
While it is vital that the United States shifts its focus toward clean energy use, the means must remain realistic about how much change the American economy can accommodate. Clinton's advocation for environmentally friendly practices promotes positive change, but is unrealistic to what the country can currently support. Campaign literature published by Hillary for America claims that within ten years of taking office, she will have had "half a billion solar panels installed" and will have "launch[ed] a $60 billion Clean Energy Challenge.” With the world's natural resources depleting at dangerously high rates, Hillary's focus on energy efficiency is critical for future generations of Americans. However, these promises are ones she likely cannot keep. Clinton's suggestions are ideal in theory, but the reality is that America is not currently in the financial standing necessary to fund a project of this size. Implementing these drastic changes on a nationwide scale and in low-income homes would be unrealistic. Taxes would skyrocket, a change unwelcome to many Americans seeking a more stable economy.
Cassandra (California)
Donald Trump, on the other hand, is a strong proponent of strengthening America's fragile economy, but dismisses the clear marks of global warming as a hoax. Campaign literature published by Trump for President Inc. states that he plans to rescind President Obama's effort towards responsible energy use, as it is claimed to be a "massive self-inflicted economic wound" that has "denied millions of Americans access to the energy wealth sitting under our feet.” As Trump argues, the tapping into of America's shale deposits would create new jobs and could potentially rebuild the economy by keeping more of the wealth within the country. However, these efforts would undermine America's previous actions to produce and use energy in a cleaner and more efficient way. Continuing to drill and rely on fossil fuels for energy would only increase global carbon emissions and worsen environmental conditions. His proposal could cause America to move backward rather than forward, despite the benefits of potentially creating new jobs. Trump's greed for America to be an energy superpower is revealed in his blatant disregard for issues regarding declining resources and greenhouse gas emissions. Both candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have made noteworthy points in their stances on climate change, but their sharply polarized viewpoints highlight the flaws in each of their campaigns.
Richard (California)
I believe that clean energy is a good idea, but it is a tad bit too optimistic. It will improve the environment, and it would also help to make the U.S. more energy independent also, a goal for both candidates. By giving tax breaks for the clean energy sector, it will promote the development of clean energy. This would give an alternate source of energy and then the rest of the world that would make less pollution and develop a sustainable source of energy.
But, on the other hand the U.S. Should not subsidize too much clean energy as there is a limit to the benefits. Sure, California might have more than enough solar energy, and it should be promoted here. But, other places, such as the east coast, might not have permanent access to sunshine, and there is no ample source of clean energy. Some of the best solutions for this waste are limited though. Geothermal power for example is great, as it helps make Iceland carbon free. But, it is limited in scope, as geothermal power would only be possible if there was active volcanic activity. On the other hand, there is a limit to the cleanliness as batteries are needed to store energy are not the best and also harm the environment, and other ways to gather energy also have environmental issues. This is a hidden cost of clean energy, which limits the “cleanliness” of that energy. They cost a lot too, as they cost 600$ per kWh which is much more than the cost of normal coal. (the energy collective)
Madison Bopp (Usa)
We need to use science to find a way to lower global warming or stop it completely. Animals that live in cold areas dying and this might make them extinct. IF this happens it will cause a break in the food change that will effect many other species and populations.
Alex Gao (Shanghai, China)
Global warming has been a prominent issue in our world, and not enough people are working to stop this issue.
Charlotte A (New York City)
I think solving the major issue of global warming, begins with awareness. Many people aren't fully aware of what global warming really is. Not only does it cause heat, but it also causes extreme weather which would include cold weather too. Many people don't know that, and it makes it harder for them to identify global warming. I know that no human wants to admit that global warming is in fact our fault, but it is, but that also means it is our responsibility to fix it. We were given one planet to live off of, what happens when it's destroyed?
Isabelle Chang (Laguna Niguel)
While climate change is one of the most significant issues occurring today, its effects are greatly underestimated by the general public. Many people are ignorant of the matter or do not perceive climate change as something that is pertinent nor detrimental to their lives.
Isabelle Chang (Laguna Niguel)
However, according to Justin Gill’s article Panel’s Warning on Climate Risk, “climate-change impacts are projected to slow down economic growth, make poverty reduction more difficult, further erode food security, and prolong existing and create new poverty trap”. I agree with Hillary Clinton that measures must be taken against this problem; however, I also believe we need to educate society of the dire consequences of climate change so people will understand the severity of issue. According to poles, there are still about 2\3 of Americans who do not think climate change is a threat. Policies and reforms would be more effective if a greater majority understood how climate change is affecting the world, and would lead to people supporting investments in clean energy and being more conscientious of saving water, using electricity efficiently, and limiting their emissions of gasoline. Furthermore, I also agree with Clinton’s goal of making “America the world’s clean energy superpower”. Climate change is not just an issue subject to the U.S but the entire world. If America takes the step to set an example of a functional and efficient eco-friendly system, it should influence other countries to follow, which would lead to a even greater movement against climate change.
Conor S (New York)
In the past I had done a project about global warming, and at the time I really did not know much about it or it's long term effects which was caused by us (people) Which Would cause significant damage to the lives of people and wildlife unless we can find better ways to prevent global warming. Like better renuable energy sources other than the massive use of fossil fuels to power mostly everything like cars and other forms of transportation, and also the use of it in factories. Something else that is a better replacement is windterbinds that are at the start of being in use. Another reason why this has to be taken control and stopped is because this can effect future generations and the growth of society while also causing many animals and other wildlife to become extinct which has really started to come into affect in the last couple years, with the rapid decrease of many species of animals. Not to mention the amount of heat that has been occurring due to global warming which just shows how much it is into affect.
Izzy Tucker (SC)
Climate change is a major topic in the recent years and is discussed highly by many around the world. I believe that human beings are the main culprits when it comes to who/what is to blame. In the article, “Did I Say 30 Billion Tons of CO2 a Year? I Meant 40.” By Phil Plait says that the “...current number for the human-made CO2 pollution put into the air every year is? 40 billion tons.” That's a lot compared to what it was before we had cars. Speaking of cars, they are the major cause for global warming. For every gallon of gas, the car emits around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global warming gases. And at least 5 pounds come from production. Another factor for climate change is our growing industry. Our economy is continuously building to accompany with our growing population. And guess what has to be taken down for those houses and factories, trees. Trees are our major source for oxygen and if we keep cutting down trees and do not replant them, then we are cutting down our oxygen levels and increasing carbon dioxide levels. Because of the pollution in the atmosphere, it is slowly deteriorating our Ozone Layer, which lets in UV rays, which cause skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune system. Our oceans are warming, in 2003, in Scotland, hundreds of adult salmon died because they couldn’t adapt to the warm water with little oxygen. As a whole we need to step it up with caring for our world that gives a home and the things we need to survive
Kemy Barrera (SC)
Climate change has been a serious topic for a long time. Many people have recognized that climate change is caused by humans. With the current election going on, one of the topics is climate change. Hillary Clinton states that climate change is a serious matter and she’s planning to use some of President Obama’s policies while Donald Trump has called it a “hoax”. As science has proven to us, climate change is a very serious topic. Even while Trump is stating that climate change is a “hoax”, we have seen that in the past years that our summers are getting hotter and our ice caps are starting to melt. Climate change links to the Greenhouse Effect because the heat absorbed by Earth or it can be later reflected into space. The www.epa.gov states that, “The heating or cooling of Earth’s surface and oceans can cause changes in the natural sources and sinks of these gases, and thus change greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. These changing concentrations are thought to have acted as a positive feedback, amplifying the temperature changes caused by long-term shifts in Earth’s orbit.” This quote is very important because with the greenhouse holding/releasing different gases such as carbon dioxide, we can see that the atmosphere has a big role in climate change.
Lonnie (USA)
As the Earth’s climate continuously becomes warmer, the environment in which we live will worsen. The cause and effects on climate change are debated among many scientists. One possibility is that climate change is caused by global warming. Global warming is the result of rising levels of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere which have warmed the Earth. The effects of this happening include rising sea levels, melting of snow and ice, fires and droughts, more extreme heating events, storms, rainfall and floods. Since so many systems in the environment are connected to climate, climate change can disturb the lives of animals, plants, humans. For example, climate change may cause a shortage in the water supply which may offset when plants bloom and set fruit or when insects hatch. Fortunately, scientists have proposed ways for this sudden climate change to terminate. Humans are a very probable cause of this environmental concern. It’s essential for us to reduce human-caused greenhouse gas emissions in order to avoid worsening the conditions of the climatic impact. Several methods we can use in order to reduce the effects on climate change include powering our homes with renewable energy, invest in energy-efficient appliances and drive a more fuel-efficient vehicle. By changing our actions, climate change may one day not be as serious of a threat to our environment.
Robert (SC)
Climate Change is a subject I don’t really like to talk about but in the more recent case, I can’t let anymore time be wasted on talking about the problem. I believe climate change is real but it’s not as bad as they're describing it. Yes it’s a problem but it’s not an immediate problem to my opinion. I also believe humans are the biggest cause of climate change but, Still I don’t believe it’s an immediate threat. Humans can speed up climate change but we can also slow it down if all the humans really wanted too, But still I don’t think it’s an immediate threat. Also like I said it can get worse we can melt all the ice in the arctic and the antarctic and flood the planet and killing everything that doesn't live in water. Likewise when about stopping climate change we can stop but people will have to give up on luxuries we have now.
Michelle Chernikova (Laguna Niguel, CA)
Climate change is undoubtedly one of the most pressing issues facing every individual today. This problem has irreversible effects on both people’s quality of life, as well as ecosystems. Climate expert Joseph Romm warns that “Due to sea level rise, increase in inundations, and storm surge flooding, shoreline erosion will be prominent. This will affect people living in the coastal and the coastal ecosystems like salt marshes. Wildfire and insect outbreaks have been increasing and are likely to intensify. There will be increased risk of deaths due to heat waves, degraded water quality, respiratory illness, and infectious diseases.” Clearly, the repercussions of climate change are drastic, and I disagree you, Robert, when you claim this is not an immediate threat; climate change is a slow, ongoing process, but its effects are experienced every day. We cause pollution. Our planet is heating up because of us, and we cannot afford to understate the consequences. When I hear climate change, I picture a lone polar bear floating on thin ice. I see farmers struggling to feed the nation. I see flooded, destroyed communities mourning over their losses. I see our biggest cities sinking deep into the ocean. I see people — us — helplessly running from a wildfire one day, and a tornado the next. These markers invariably affect us all. They threaten our jobs, our families, and our lives. If we do not promote change now, future generations will not be able to control the global repercussions.
Michelle Chernikova (Laguna Niguel, CA)
We as young people will soon be responsible for this problem, so it is crucial that we support government officials who will encourage progress for our world. In the upcoming presidential election, Democrat Hillary Clinton, for example, has her campaign centered around climate change. Her website states that “She will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 percent in 2025 relative to 2005 levels and put the country on a path to cut emissions more than 80 percent by 2050.” On the other hand, Republican candidate Donald Trump tweeted, “Global warming is a total, and very expensive, hoax!” Trump’s assertions are entirely invalid, dismissing decades of scientific study. We will be confronted with candidates with such diametric stances. It is imperative for us to support leaders who react to our problems and work towards meaningful solutions, no matter from what democratic party they may be. We need to encourage adults to acknowledge climate change and vote for local officers and state senators who advocate for this issue as well. While a true impact will not be possible without government regulation, individuals also need to do their part. We need to spread awareness. I understand that some people may feel uncomfortable openly supporting such controversial topics, but that is an injustice to our future. Although I do not believe climate change has any concrete solution, it is every person’s moral responsibility to preserve and better the world for coming generations.

The Earth is our home, and it is the planet where we start, live, and end our lives. Climate change would change our way of life in the future if we do not substitute our current power sources, popular transportation methods, and any aspect of life that contributes to climate change for a cleaner and renewable source. With the things I have learned about climate change and the human activity that contributes to it, I am concerned for the future of this planet, and the health of the future generations of humans, plants, and animals. I agree with Hillary Clinton’s opinion/policy on climate change. Hillary Clinton’s goal of “making America the world’s clean energy superpower” is what humans are supposed to strive for. It is an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time because why must we wait for climate change to definitively express itself. According to NASA, we are already seeing changes such as sea levels rising, global temperature rising, ice sheets shrinking, and Arctic sea ice reducing. Sea level rates as of last decade has doubled. Global temperatures have been increasing since 1880. 150 to 250 cubic kilometers of ice disappears in Greenland every year from 2002 and 2006. Not only is Greenland is losing Ice, but so it Antartica. Antarctica lost 152 cubic kilometers of ice from 2002 and 2005. Human activity is to be blamed for climate change.
Nick (USA)
I agree with this and also disagree, The reason why I agree with you is that global warming is getting worse because of our greenhouse gasses and that ice is melting from the glaciers. Every since we started to overuse fossil fuels, the global temperature of the Earth has risen rapidly. The part where I disagree is because with making us one of the biggest users of clean energy it will cost tons of money to do. The problem with that is because we are already about 20 trillion dollars in debt and counting. If we make this happen we will be close to 50 trillion dollars in debt which are super hard to get back to 0.
Destiny (sc)
I feel that global warming is caused by humans. The National Wildlife Federation states that “Human activity--such as burning fossil fuels--causes more greenhouse gases to build up in the atmosphere. As the atmosphere "thickens" with more greenhouse gases, more heat is held in. Fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas are high in carbon and, when burned, produce major amounts of carbon dioxide or CO2. A single gallon of gasoline, when burned, puts 19 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere”. Many people today do not understand what is happening to the earth when they drive to work in the morning. Factories, driving, even using a grill is hurting the earth. Humans need to be educated and told what happens when they do these things. Also, not only are we hurting ourselves, we are hurting animals and destroying some of their habitats. The National Wildlife Federation states that “Melting arctic ice removes hunting ground from Polar Bears.Warmer water temperatures will cause population declines for trout, salmon and many other species that require cold water to survive”. People need to know that we are not the only things being affected by this issue. Global warming can also affect our health. Higher temperatures can raise the risk of strokes, spread pets, and decrease living space (reference.com).
Jose Gonzalez (Greenville)
Global warming is the warming near the earth's surface that results when the earth's atmosphere traps the sun's heat. The earth is getting warmer. Results are tiny, so far, but they are expected to grow and speed up. Within the next fifty to one hundred years, the earth may be hotter than it has been in the past million years. As oceans warm and glaciers melt, land and cities along coasts may have water rising and floods. Heat and drought may cause forests to die and food crops to fail. Global warming will affect weather everywhere, plants and animals everywhere; humans are warming the earth's atmosphere by burning fuels, cutting down forest, and by taking part in other activities that release certain heat trapping gases into the atmosphere. This interests me because I care for the ocean and a policy that we should practice is having energy companies only give out enough power to homes to last the 6 hours of night time. This is an urgent threat and if we don't act now we won't have time to act later.
Diana (sc)
Humans are responsible for Climate Change. We're responsible for the gas produced. We burn our natural resources, and release carbon dioxide into the air that harms us. Not only does this affect the Earth, but it affects People’s Health. There are so many unhealthy chemicals in the air that affect us. No one pays much attention to what’s really happening. When factory workers are burning fuels, they don’t pause and think about all the reasons why not to do it. Things such as recycling or taking walks to our close destinations are simple tasks that we could do to help our planet. Switching to renewable energy sources could also help. Climate Change affects animals and plants too. Summers are getting hotter and this leads to glaciers melting. The heat is responsible for rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and so much more. Hillary Clinton believes this is also an issue, while Donald Trump Believe it’s a “hoax” perpetrated by the Chinese. Climate Change is most threatening and and has been a long-term problem. Our cars and modes of transportation are also a problem. The gases they release are harmful to our oxygen. plants are constantly being torn down for our use of land and some people need to wake up and realize that soon this will become an issue. plants take care of the carbon dioxide that has been released and they give us our oxygen. We need to take care of our world before its too late..

Because of this, I support Clinton’s goal which Hillary for America defines as “making America the world’s clean energy superpower”. Such policies would not, “weaken our security, keeping us reliant on foreign sources of energy,” as argued on Donald J. Trump for President because many other countries are also implementing environmental regulations. According to EcoWatch, Lithuania’s has amended its Law on Environmental Protection and Latvia’s passed the Environmental Protection. Climate change will not be solved if the United States makes reforms on its own. As the environment degrades, countries around the globe will start working together rather than creating a hierarchy as Trump suggests. This so called “hoax” will not disappear unless we do something about it.

However I do agree with republicans on the fact that climate change is, “far from this nation’s most pressing national security issue” as explained on GOP. Although climate change will be deadly if temperatures continue to rise, it is important to address other threatening factors facing America. Climate change does not have as immediate impacts as issues such as terrorism and war. It would be inefficient to put all time and energy into solving an issue that hasn't doesn't have as tragic effects as others. Climate change is a serious problem, but it is not the most pressing. We must first tackle more dangerous matters and then confront environmental concerns. How can we describe rising temperatures as the most dangerous matter when terrorism has caused turmoil across the globe? If the countries turn to war, nuclear technology would wipe out life as we know it and climate wouldn't seem as drastic as an issue. Therefore, Climate change is not the most threatening issue but is an important topic that needs addressed by the president.
Kennedy Rolfe (Vermont)
Climate change is a major topic to talk about in any political debate. The carbon that is being produced by humans. The carbon that is wearing away the ozone is being produced by large factories, cars, and many other large machinery. If climate change is taken seriouse and we try improve and use cleaner energy then we will be able to improve and slow the rate that climate change is happening.
Jasmine Briceno (Greenville, SC)
I personally believe that climate change is an urgent and pressing matter because studies have proven it. That Carbon Dioxide is rising like skyrocket and greenhouse gasses are causing change in areas where drastic changes like such are not only gonna affect us. Like icebergs melting, colder areas are beginning to get warmer, and warmer areas are getting colder. The ocean is getting warmer, some areas are even getting colder. The animals are also being affected because if the water gets hotter or colder, even for the land animals, the animals will want to relocate and if there is no where else to relocate we will have extincion occur in animals. If we have extincion, we can not hunt animals close to extinction so we lose food sources. Which will inevitably affect us all. Hillary Clinton believes that climate change is an urgent threat, which it is, and wants to provide policies to decrease the amount of gasses and energy we use. By using some of Obama’s policies, like using solar panels and increasing environmental regulations on coal, which is a natural resource and an excellent source of energy is a great idea. It is one that i support. Although, Republican Donald Trump says it is a “hoax”, which makes no sense at all because we have scientific proof that it is real and is happening to us because of us. Without even scientific proof we can tell that our summers are getting hotter and ice caps are melting.

I totally disagree with what you stated above its all wrong. You are wrong. Learn some spanish.

Climate change has always been one of the most discussed topics among people. People recognize that we as human beings are the cause of it, but some people don’t take action against it. Every passing year there are tons of new factories built that emit gases into our atmosphere. Along with those factories and so many trees are cut down. Those trees take care of our carbon dioxide problem. It’s not just factories though, it’s from different modes of transportation as well. Most of the world uses some type of transportation which causes a big problem. Epa.gov states that “Climate change can also alter rain, influence crop yields, affect human health, cause changes to forests and even impact our energy supply”. NASA’s study on Climate Change: How do we know? Also states that the rapid climate change is also effecting the sea level rise, global temperature, warming the oceans, shrinking ice sheets etc. I believe we are to blame, we have caused so much damage to the earth and we continue to do it as our population increases. There are so many things we can do to help decrease climate change. Such as reducing energy, cool wash your clothes and hang them to dry, change the way you get to your destination (such as walking or riding a bike if possible), try to conserve water, and lastly recycle. Anyone could do these simple tasks and there is so much more you could do. This is our planet and it’s our job to take care of it.
Claire (NJ)
I believe that humans take most of the blame for climate change. Each year we keep producing more and more greenhouse gases whether it’s from factories or our own vehicles. From a website on EPA.gov, it states, “ Carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere through burning fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil), solid waste, trees and wood products, and also as a result of certain chemical reactions (e.g., manufacture of cement).” We are the ones that have been burning these resources. Though they may benefit people and make a profit for some, it is doing a lot of harm to our planet. The way to get rid of carbon dioxide is from plants, such as trees, absorbing it. If we keep cutting trees then we prolong the process of them getting rid of carbon dioxide. This would keep it lingering in our atmosphere longer than it should. Carbon dioxide is not our only problem, there are other greenhouse gases that have been emitted like methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. All of those have been released from human activity whether is was from transporting resources or from the industrial process. I do not understand why people can be so oblivious to this issue. Our planet has not experienced things like this until people began doing anything for money. Even if it meant destroying our planet.
Lexi (NY)
I totally agree with you, as a nation I feel like we need to pull together to combat the real problem which is us we have become so accustomed to using whatever we what whenever but not thinking of the impact it may have on the world.
Ethan (Fairfax, California)
Human activity is responsible for the cause of climate change because of the fossil fuels we burn that get released into the atmosphere. When humans burn fossil fuels like coal, gas, or oil, it is released into the atmosphere where it traps heat. As more carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere, it stays there and more heat is held in which leads to the melting of polar ice caps. In 2007, two scientists, Keane and Martinez sent out a survey to 10,257 earth scientists asking the question, “Do you think human activity is a significant contributing factor in changing mean global temperatures?” 90% of the participants in the survey were from U.S. institutions and 6% were from Canadian institutions while the remaining 4% were from institutions in 21 other nations. The results showed that 82% of the participants has answered yes to the the question. Over past 650,000 years the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have not gone up past 300 part per million (ppm) until the 20th century where it rose above 400 ppm in 2013.
Sarah Hardee (Jackson, WY)
Climate change is rarely acknowledged by those who will not have to deal with the consequences of it. It is extremely discouraging that young people have little to no say in an issue that will ultimately affect their future and not the future of those making decisions. Donald Trump’s mindset that “ Global warming is an expensive hoax." is an extremely dangerous one. If we are to ignore climate change now, then later we will have much more expensive consequences. We have already started to see the consequences of our careless actions as multiple coastal cities are sinking as sea levels rise. A Donald Trump presidency would be extremely detrimental to our country and planet. Hillary Clinton’s plan to make America "the world's clean energy superpower" would, in contrast, be extremely successful in stopping greenhouse gas emissions from the US and would encourage other countries to step toward stopping emissions like the Paris Accord did. The result of this year’s election will have a large impact on the future of our planet.
Leo K (CA)
Climate change is without a doubt one of the most urgent and pressing matters in recent years. Carbon dioxide amongst other greenhouse gases have deteriorated the ozone layer; deforestation and urbanization have wiped entire species from the Earth; and rapid global warming has begun changes to our oceans that will be catastrophic. With the global concentration of CO2 passing the notorious 400ppm line just last month, these changes we make to the environment are becoming all too real -- and irreversible. It cannot be stressed enough: climate change is a reality that we all need to accept and actively work to counteract, both individually and as a planet.
Yet despite all the hard evidence presented over the past century or so, there are still those who refuse its existence. Even some of our politicians, those who we hold so highly, are in denial. This denial, like climate change, has a certain degree of invisibility to it; and in turn, is far easier to ignore. It is said that ignorance is bliss, however this bliss will be short-lived and bring about far more sinister consequences. This is the same ignorance that accelerates climate change at the rate it has. This is the same ignorance that will destroy the Earth that future generations will have to live on. This ignorance. Left unaddressed; it will be our bane. There is no easy way to solve the problem of climate change, but should we postpone the search for said solution any longer, there will be no time left to find one.
Jill (Annandale)
Climate change is one of the largest long-term issues involving the world. It affects people’s health and is starting to cause great damage to the world. Many problems involving this topic are facing the world and hitting it hard. The temperature is gradually rising and the ice in the arctic is melting. Animals are becoming extinct because of the ice melting in the Arctic. The water levels are rising from the cause of the ice melting, which is starting to engulf more and more land. The unhealthy chemicals in the air affect people and their health. People are not recycling, which makes the garbage dumps even larger than they currently are. There are some issues that could be easily solved, but this is much more complicated. So many people have no idea that their everyday activities are affecting the people around them, including themselves. They are damaging themselves with the air but do not even know it. People must be educated with what the world is coming to, because if something is not changed soon, everyone could be in real trouble. People need to switch to renewable energy so there is less waste and more is recycled and used again. Pollution needs to be stopped because it is hurting everyone who breathes the air in. This is not an easy task, but people should start working and thinking about how to make the world a healthier place for everyone to live.
Ila M. (California)
Climate change is an encroaching issue that has been discussed but carefully avoided when it comes to implementing actual solutions. The influx of greenhouse gasses (mainly carbon dioxide) has been linked to human activity, with support from substantial sources such as NASA. They reported that 1,300 independent scientific experts (under the UN) concluded a 90% probability that human activities over the past 50 years have warmed the planet (NASA, 2016). We can no longer thwart actions toward shifting our energy sources out of denial or economic fear. By changing to a more sustainable economy we could see great benefits for the environment and ourselves. Alternative energy like solar and wind can create a whole new field of jobs. Implementing full-cost pricing would include the cost of the environmental impacts of the product and inform the consumer, if not change their incentives (ex: if gas gets pricey people will start taking the bus more or even invest in fuel efficient cars). These are only a few ways we could make positive change for society and the environment. The hardest part about climate change and global warming is that it is a long term issue, we not only have to deal with the consequences now, but future generations will also have to bear the burden of our choices. If we dive into solving it, we set an example for the future and we can keep what supports us currently, supporting us indefinitely.
Jill (Annandale)

The environment is our life support system, and foundation for our social and economic liberties, yet it is quickly taken for granted. Due to human activity and the influx of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gasses, we may not have an Earth left to live on. Climate change has disrupted the changes of natural phases of hot and cold periods (like ice ages) on Earth. We can no longer claim that global warming is a natural part of the earth.

Global Warming is happening, and needs to be effectively addressed globally. In order to have an impact on our current environmental situation we have to change our economic standards. The story of climate change has not been framed properly to have mass appeal of the human population. It is more convenient to deny climate change, rather than to act upon it. In order to make a constructive impact to slow down climate change, people must unify and be willing to undergo a habitual and behavioral change. With acceptance of our situation, we must globally cooperate and take immediate action, with the assistance and commitment from politicians and leaders and backing of massive industries. In order to create this shift, humanity needs to transition the way in which our society and economy function. Ultimately, these new energy sources would produce new jobs with a renewable energy focus, which would give rise to a sustainable and green-collar economy.
Nicole Porter (Annandale, New Jersey)
In my opinion, climate change is a major issue. Even if it isn't a far from the nation’s most pressing national security issue it will only increase, and become a serious threat to us. I support Hillary Clinton when she says climate change is “an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time,”. How could climate change be a hoax? Our summers are getting warmer, the ice caps are melting, due to these changes important animals are becoming extinct, and Donald Trump is saying it's a hoax. Climate change is real and we are responsible, over 90 percent of climate scientist agree that Humans are at fault for causing climate change. Also I agree with Hillary Clinton’s Resolution for “making America the world’s clean energy superpower”. I agree with her on this topic because it’s a way we can resolve climate change slowly but surely. Clinton is in the support of using solar panels, Using Obama’s climate change policy, and increasing environmental regulations on coal and fracking. I am very worried about climate change because this is the world we live in and we should not be the ones responsible for destroying it. As a nation we can all pitch in with the issue of climate change by changing little things in everyday routines. For example walk or ride a bike instead of driving, this way we cut down on air pollution. In conclusion climate change is a real and serious issue that must be addressed.
Jessie (DE)
Climate change is one of the most urgent and pressing issues facing this generation. The NASA study, Climate Change: How Do We Know?, shows atmospheric carbon dioxide is rising like it never has before in the known history of the Earth. With the increasing amount of greenhouse gasses trapped in our atmosphere, the Earth's rising temperatures are having a serious and significant effects including ocean warming, shrinking ice sheets, record high temperatures, and ocean acidification. Greenhouse gasses emitted from human activities has been concluded as the primary driver for the Earth's warming temperatures. Humans need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and there should be laws on greenhouse emissions allowed per person. These laws that need to be reinforced by presidential support. Whoever becomes president needs to realize that climate change is a real and pressing issue that needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later. I am afraid people won't take it seriously until it's too late to try and repair it.
Catie (NJ)
Jessie, I completely agree with you. Climate change is a major issue where I live, everyday that I go outside I am able to feel the difference. Trump blames China for creating global warming as a hoax yet we have scientific proof from NASA, and other corporations, that global warming is real. The only thing is, how are we going to be able to control citizen's gas emissions? Almost everyone in America relies on some type of automobile to travel. Where I live, everyone travels by car. If we restricted people's gas emissions then the economy would severely drop and we would lose thousands of jobs. Jobs are also a major issue in our presidential debate right now. So, why can't we create jobs by employing people to build various renewable energy resources?
Nick (USA)
Global climate change is a real problem, We have to take steps to reduce global climate change. One way we can reduce global climate change is to use renewable energy sources that don't have emissions. The reason why this is such a big problem is because with the icebergs melting the global water level is rising. If the global water rises it will disrupt the ecosystems everywhere in the world. Out of all democrats and republicans, 72% of democrats support that global climate change is a real problem. Only 24% of all republicans think that global climate change is a real problem. Nearly 7 out of every 10 democrats support global climate change to renewable energy sources. We have to switch to renewable energy sources sometimes, so why not switch now?
Patrick Allen (CA)
Climate change is a huge issue in our world today. The highest temperatures continue to increase each year, and we are doing nothing to help ourselves. The first step to a cleaner and healthier world is to BAN fracking. Fracking contaminates the water by spilling chemicals and toxins used during the process into waterways. Also, methane is released during the process. In fact, in 2010 an estimated 110,000 pounds of methane was released in just the first nine days of operation (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/margie-alt/fracking-facts_b_6079412.html). Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton support the fracking, and have shown no sign of planning on banning it. In fact, the only candidate to have said that they would ban fracking was Democratic Candidate Bernie Sanders. If we have any chance of saving this world we should stop fracking, and switch to solar and wind powered energy. Switching to clean energy will start us down the path towards saving this beautiful planet, and the inhabitants with it.
Natalie B (Wisconsin)
Climate change is a problem and a majority of the problem is caused by human activity. People are oblivious about the problem. It's very threatening to us and it is for sure a long term problem for us. It's not an easy fix, not something we can take care of in 24 hours. There's not a whole lot that we can do at this rate, people are careless and they're our problem. Summers are getting hotter which leads to more issues with our arctic lands melting. As the arctic melts more animals become extinct. I could go on again about this topic and how it's effecting our society and the way of life for the animals and creatures living here as well. This isn't just our world.
mike (wisconsin)
everyone in the world uses energy no matter what you do. if u can limit yourself to burning fossil fuels or using air conditioning, all the way up to using less water brushing your teeth, another big thing is recycling we throw away so much trash in the recycling we the u.s should be like Germany and be so strict about recycling so we can save more on energy and resources up to 99%.
Jai (NY)
Climate change is a huge issue. In the current election, there are four candidates. Hillary Clinton and Jill Stein are the only two people running for president that are ready to handle the issue of Climate change. Why do I say this? We need to realize that this is a huge problem. We need to cut down CO2 levels - now. Scientists have been warning us for forever and now we are above the HEALTHY CO2 levels in our atmosphere. If we don't change something RIGHT NOW - there is a huge problem. But the thing is, there are so many ignorant people in this world. We really need to work on this.
Jeff (Pa)
there are other ways to create energy while keeping it "clean". Wind power, Solar power there are many other possible energy sources but won't it change everything about the way we live. Just something to think about
Dean (PA)
One big problem I don't see too many people commenting on is what is the best clean energy alternative? Under the Busch administration, democrats successfully passed a bill blocking the addition of any new nuclear power plants in the us. Currently only 19.5% of the US's power comes from nuclear. The idea that nuclear is extremely dangerous and pumps radiation into our air and water, is entirely false and in line with child's levels of thinking. France is 100% nuclear and has been for years now without any issue. Nuclear is the safest and cleanest form of energy possible, and blocking the growth of the industry is stopping us from making it even better. Nuclear releases considerably less radiation into the air than fossil fuels such as coal and oil. At one point a nuclear power plant was created that literally could not fail, the creators known because they tried. Pointing at issues like Fukushima and 3 Mile Island is entirely an unsupported argument. Both incidents were isolated and the technology to prevent disasters like that from ever happening again legal cannot be put into use due to government regulations. The best solution to fixing climate change as fast and efficiently as possible is right in front of us, and blocked by our own government.
Chista (NJ)
There is no doubt that we have created the most disastrous problem there has been in the history of mankind. Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump believes that climate change is just a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. Another reason why is he so incredibly unfit to be our next president. Someone who cannot recognize that climate change is the most pressing issue in 2016 is completely living in their own reality and ignoring the reality around them. The Earth is getting hotter each year, the arctic is melting, and people in California are running out of water; therefore I completely agree with Hillary Clinton’s views on climate change. Like President Obama, she believes that climate change is the most threatening and long-term problem today. Hillary has a plan that is going to work, such as cutting waste in homes, more efficient cars to cut down on gas, and launching the Clean Energy Challenge. Donald Trump encourages methane and coal use, instead of suggesting that we use renewable resources. This mindset contributes to the climate problems that we are having today. I think Donald Trump is so dismissive to climate change because he doesn’t see it as an issue that will be present during his lifetime, therefore if it doesn’t affect him it isn’t important because he is such an ignorant and self concerned person. It is clear how important it is to our generation to preserve the environment and fix our climate change issues, just based on these articles.
Jai (NY)
I completely agree with you. Hillary is really ready to face this threat. As I said in my response to the topic of climate change, there are a lot of ignorant people in this world who take our earth for granted. An example is Donald Trump - what we are doing now to our world isn't okay. CO2 levels are way too high and the next president needs to bring Global awareness to the issue of Climate Change. There is a huge problem arising and Donald won't handle it - Hillary and maybe even Jill Stein are more prepared for this issue.
Aldo H LHSG6 (CA)
I don't know how people are oblivious or say it is false. Global Warming is real and is slowly effecting us. With us using fossil fuels and other energy sources that poison the atmosphere. Since the Atmosphere acts as a greenhouse and keeps all the heat emissions in it. So with the emissions getting trapped in the atmosphere it is heating up the Earth. So it is real and we need to have scientist continue their research for new clean energy sources.
Jacob. G LHSG6 (CA)
Humans have more effect on climate change more than anything else, Starting with cars, factories, etc. We put global warming on the sun's temperatures but in the last 35 years the sun and the climate have been going in the opposite directions. The rise of CO2 has been the cause of human activity nothing of the climate or the sun. We can solve our problem by using wind power, solar power and even allege. Solar power is a unlimited source it never runs out and doesn't cause pollution same as wind power but the problem with win is there isn't always wind full year round, but these resources do not harm the climate like the resources we currently use.
Dylan N LHSG6 (Ca)
I believe that climate change is a threat but what can we really do about it. There is still a great number of people who think this is not a problem or they just all out do not care. I think the only way to stop bad climate change is if the human race where to die off the planet but that wont happen for a h whole lot of years. I just think people are complaining about it but are not really making a difference because there is still going to be people who dont care at all about the climate and people who do care i bet a good amount of them still drive cars so they are not helping but thats just what i think. This is for a grade..... bye :)
Mikayla (VT)
I am interested in this topic because many people believe that climate change isn't real, however I believe it is. I think it is has a lot to do with humans because we put a lot of toxic chemicals into the air such as the burning of plastic and other things that should not be burned. To prevent further damage I believe that we should use solar energy and wind energy as they will not release harmful chemicals into the air we breathe. To sum up, I believe that we should do something about the climate change and try to prevent as much damage as possible.
Brenda H LSHG6 (CA)
I also believe in climate change and I agree with you. I do think that we should use solar and wind energy. and Yes us human to so much damage than we don't even realize it until it affects us. This is why solar and wind energy would be safe and it won't be harmful to us or to our earth.

Climate change is definitely real and isn't something that should be overlooked. For Donald Trump to consider this issue as "a hoax" will be rudely awakened to decades of data stating otherwise. I recently watched the documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth", which followed Al Gore on a lecture circuit as he explained to people the dangers of global warming and it's destructive effects on the environment. Although this documentary came out in 2005, the message was clear; slow down our CO2 emissions before it is too late. Graphs showed years of skyrocketing CO2 levels, each year exceeding the next. Using the data they were able to predict what the levels would look like in the year 2050. The scary part is that we have already hit the expected levels in the year 2016, we are years ahead of schedule. The CO2 levels thickening the atmosphere and trapping the sun's rays within the Earth, ultimately heating it up. This heat is responsible for things such as rising sea levels, coral bleaching, and ice melt. Some politicians choose to ignore the problem of climate change because it is inconvenient. This problem is not an easy one to fix, and will not be a cheap one either, however, we can not afford to ignore the problem all together.
Vanessa S LHSG5 (CA)
I agree with you that this major problem cannot be overlooked. It's simply so big and climate change not only affects the earth but us as living beings as well. I suggest politicians would take this problem more seriously rather than brushing it off because if something is not done now we will all suffer the consequences.
Philip s LHSG6 (california)
I agree that climate change cant be overlooked. Climate change can change our weather, food sources, water levels, ice melting, extinction in animals, destruction of habitats, and many other things. I hope everyone realizes this is a problem and reduces their usage of things that have C02, such as gas operated vehicles, aerosol cans, and many other man made products. If we don't act now and try and solve the problem there will be consequences.
Jai (NY)
I completely agree. It will be costly, but politicians are narrow-minded (most of them). We need to work on the issue of climate change. There will be nothing to be the president of later if we don't face this issue now.
Hannah (Pennsylvania)
As someone who has solar panels on their house, I believe that climate change is something we should prevent. Both sides of the argument have valid points, so I believe we have to find a balance between the two. There needs to be a way to not harm the environment, while being cost efficient. Obviously, different parties have different priorities about this issue, but I believe that it should be of importance and should be addressed. Whether or not some scientists make up information to get money for their projects, I don't know, but it could be true. Overall, this issue needs to be addressed, but the way to solve it is all up to personal opinion.
Jacob. G LHSG6 (CA)
I don't think there is a way to be cost efficient for a problem this big we created this hole now we have to get out of it even if it hurts our economy and the way we can address it is for the community to finally step up and make a push for change.
Logan Muller (Delaware)
Since climate change is a huge issue of this 2016 election, it is very important that each candidate fully understands it. Donald Trump shows a poor understanding of climate change because he legitimately believes that it's concept was invented by the Chinese...to decrease US market competition. Since he wants to decrease the regulation of our businesses, he also wants to allow companies to increase their carbon emissions. Due to Global warming, alternative energy is vitally important to our environment, so it is also vitally important to elect a candidate that understands this and will invest in alternative energy.
Jacob. G LHSG6 (CA)
I agree that Donald trump only cares about business and is only using climate change and how he will supposedly help solve for his advantage to win the election. But Hillary or Trump truly understand the trouble our world is in.
Sophia Huang (New York, NY)
I agree with President Obama. Like he said, climate change is the greatest long-term threat to everyone. This is because it is the main cause of some problems that people, animals, and plants face. Climate change can cause more droughts, floods, hurricanes, and many other nature disasters. This would lead to other problems. Also, as the Earth becomes warmer and warmer, there would be more and more mosquitoes do to the fact that they like the heat. This also means that diseases would spread much faster. Global warming (climate change) can also cause species to go distinct. This is because as the Earth gets warmer, ice would melt faster and those animals that live and or depend on the ice would eventually go extinct. Therefore, I agree that climate change is a really important problem that everyone should come together to help make better. To do this, we should let more people know about this issue since now, only 1/3 of the Americans actually care. We can also burn less coal since that releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which traps the heat.
Gabriel Cubero-Albisa (NY New York)
Climate Change is a real and pressing issue that must be fixed for a variety of reasons but has stubbornly remained an issue. Large companies are not willing to switch to safer forms of energy and many households don't want to pay for the switch. There are three major issues when it comes to climate change. The first largest issue is that it is hard to store electricity which makes solar panels and windmills a inconstant energy source, the second large issue is that a lot of money has been invested into harmful forms of energy such as oil and coal. The third issue is that there is a large fear of nuclear energy.
These issues can be fixed but they need to be addressed. Humans can be considered greedy beings and a perfect example of that is Donald J Trump. One issue can be fixed and the other issue can be partly fixed with funding for researcher. There are people working on ways to store energy for long periods of time which would allow for constancy of energy and we have designs for safer nuclear power plants and we can keep on researching. The other issue is infrastructure that already exists. There are many rich people who don't want to deal with having to switch to a different form of infrastructure but this comes to making power cheaper through research and petitioning from the people for better laws. This barely scratches the surface but when there is a will there is a way.

Climate change has been neglected by the Trump campaign and the republican party, since it becoming an issue in the 1990’s. Most recently it was Donald Trump who called it a “hoax” and denied to fully confront how he would deal with the issue of climate change. In 2013, Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise said in reference to Obama’s inauguration speech, "The President was wearing a trench coat it was so cold, but he's talking about global warming." (Rolling Stone). This exemplifies the common dismissive comments made by the republican party that act as a shield to avoid attempting to solve the problem.
Instead of denying the problem, Hillary Clinton has accepted it as, “an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time” (NY Times). Clinton realises that global warming will not just go away by itself and has put forth a plan to promote clean energy. Clinton plans to put 60 billion dollars into promoting clean energy by partnering with states, cities, and rural communities. This plan will allow America to become as she called it in a recent debate, “The 21st century clean energy superpower”. By using renewable energy America would have a more sustainable and be self reliant when it comes to energy.
Ultimately, Hillary Clinton has the better policy to help limit climate change through the use of renewable energy. Republicans, such as Donald Trump cannot be trusted to address the issue of global warming when they have been so reluctant to even accept its existence.
Sophie Heimerdinger (Marin County, CA)
In my opinion, people, subconsciously see the Earth as a servant to us, providing us unlimited amounts of natural resources, ready for our consumption. We use extensive amounts of water for everyday tasks, we use agricultural methods that pollute and contaminate all organisms, including ourselves, and we destroy ecosystems only for our own benefit. These aren't the only activities killing our planet, but with a rapidly growing world population, some of these cannot be avoided as we search to provide for everyone. As a whole, we need to recognize the fact that our selfishness to the planet, and our never ending need for resources, isn't very beneficial as we think...
Matthew Huntingdon (California)
Some people claim that global warming is nothing more than natural climate change. In reality the rise in atmospheric CO2 over the last century was clearly caused by human activity, as it occurred at a rate much faster than natural climate changes could produce. Many people also attribute the rise in temperatures to the sun, however in the last 35 years the sun and the climate have been going in opposite directions. We are on a slippery slope and if we don't do anything to prevent it the oceans will rise and we will suffer droughts and heat waves. " Global warming is an expensive hoax." said Donald Trump. It worries me that despite the clear evidence one of our candidates can still deny the facts on such a serious topic.
Leah Delabruere (Vermont)
I agree with you completely, I think we should take this issue into consideration and stop ignoring the fact that we are going to cause another extinction. In my opinion Donald Trump is saying this so he can keep his businesses going, since they cause so much pollution. Just think about how much pollutions this wall is going to bring.
Bulle (paris)
This topic interest me because I think it's so good to support these animals who are endangered, the people who act are so courageous and we have to protect wild animals.
Julianna W (DE)
Climate change is commonly misplaced with the term global warming. When global warming is introduced to a conversation, people tend to get the wrong idea of the subject. If there is snow on the ground during the winter, is the globe actually cooling? This viewpoint is shared amongst many; however, the scientifically correct term, climate change, identifies the steady increase in global temperatures over the years. Climate change is real and scientific data has proven this controversial topic. Whether someone believes in this theory or not, it is our humane obligation to take care of the planet we live in for upcoming generations.

i agree with hillary about climate change and how it is effecting the world climate change is an issue. obama is helping paris to reduce green house gas emissions donald trump wants to ignore climate change and drill for more fossil fuel even if u look at climate change and say its not real or it is real i don't think it would hurt to reduce the pollution from coal companies fossil fuels .ect
Ryan (VT)
Climate change is a serious problem around the world, and honestly its wouldn't be that hard to help fix this problem. We have already started this by some places having solar and wind power instead of using fossil fuels. Also, the companies creating electric cars is helping as well. So all we really would have to do is change the way we power our cars or get electricity for our houses and it would help tremendously.
Julianna W (DE)
Although I agree with your opinion on the idea of climate change, I would like to disagree on the complexity of converting the globe's use of greenhouse gases to the use of pure energy. Big businesses top the charts when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions; yet, they refuse to convert to solar or wind energy mainly because of cost. I do not agree with most propositions made by the presidential candidate, Donald Trump; however, I do agree with one claim of his in which he states, " [We need to] encourage the use of natural gas and other American energy resources that will both reduce emissions but also reduce the price of energy and increase our economic output." But the big problem lies in the last part of the sentence, how do we make energy cost less? I hope this topic is further reviewed for whoever wins the presidency.
Phillip Q (VT)
Climate change is definitely a real problem in the world. There has been many changes in the world because of climate change. The ice has been melting in the arctic. I do not think that climate change is a hoax if you look at the difference in the sea level back 20 years ago there is a pretty big difference. If we switch to renewable power we can stop climate change from happening. An example would be solar and wind farms.
Sydney H. (Bay City, MI)
As a millennial and a student, climate change has been impossible to ignore. Unlike Donald Trump, I am positive that climate change is indeed NOT a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. It is a serious, real-life dilemma that will impact my generation and the generations to follow. I have attended many rallies and meetings to talk about the implications of climate change and I find it hard to qualify this as a partisan debate. Those who recognize the severity and reality of climate change are aware of the facts and those who discredit its legitimacy may as well be just as ignorant as Donald Trump himself. Climate change is happening, and it is up to our generation to help curb its growth.
Luis L LHSG2 (CA)
This topic interests me because fighting climate change is a long term goal for the people of this entire world and not only the United States. This topic causes controversy because not many believe believe in climate change. I believe those that don't believe in climate change, don't believe in climate change because climate change is a slow process which means the ones affected are not this generation but the future generations. Hillary Clinton's goal of making the United States the first clean energy country is a great goal for our country. Although this goal will take a while to be fulfilled, it's a great step to stopping climate change. On the other hand, Donald Trump believes Climate Change is a hoax. A possible president with that mentality can negatively affect the movement to stop climate change. Therefore, this topic raises the question to the people of America of who's hands they want to leave their country in.
Rachel HillE3H (PA)
Climate change is very important problem that needs to be addressed in all the countries around the world. Earth is our home and if we, the humans, destroy it, there will be nothing left for future generations. I feel as though without a plan to stop or delay how much climate changing, the Earth as we know it, will change completely. The adults of this generation will not be around to see the negative effects that climate change will have on this planet. However, each generation should be concerned not only on immediate effects, but also on long term effects. I believe that climate change needs action right now. If we can lower our harmful emissions into the air now, climate change will hopefully occur at a slower rate. Simple acts of turning off the light when a room is not being used or turning off the water when brushing your teeth will have a huge effect in the long run. David Suzuki is a Canadian environmentalist. He says that simple everyday activities like eating a meat-less meal a day will help to reduce climate change because “18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions come from meat and dairy production.” Small, everyday things can make a huge difference in our environment. Since, I believe that climate change is caused by humans, we can change how much the climate changes. In the end, we only have one Earth and if we do nothing to stop climate change, it will destroy our planet.

On the problem of climate change I think that we as a new generation with newer technology need to find a better and safer way to get energy that will not kill the environment. But before we can do this we need to look back onto what we are using now to get our energy and make a change because what we are using now as sources of energy are killing our planet and if we stand by and let it keep happening then our planet will just be getting worse it is time to stop ignoring the facts and start to do something about energy in this state of the planet before we kill it completely.

With the ever increasing population in the United States, our limited resources that the economy highly relies on become very important. This is troublesome of course especially with elections coming up this November, and voters must decide for which nominees to vote for. Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have opposing views on crude oil, and even if they contradict themselves often, the elections will still take place. As oil becomes more and more scarce and the increasing population of Americans find it a necessity for energy in cars and machinery that eases jobs around the country. One of the problems is that the profit of mined oil contradicts the people that are negatively being affected by the consumption, so as Citizens of the US, we must choose to trust a man who sees climate change as a "hoax" or the woman who accepts the problem in hopes for improvement.
Viviana G LHSG4 (CA)
Climate change has been a huge ongoing issue, especially in today's advancing society. It should not be seen as something that is "a hoax," it is an extreme issue. There have been countless signs of climate change in the world such as the ocean temperatures rising, species becoming extinct, and the ocean levels rising. This is clearly not a hoax since there is factual evidence to back it up. It is the most urgent issue to resolve because the earth is our home. We have to leave it in stable conditions for future generations so they are able to see the beauty of it all. Hillary Clinton's plan to make "America the world's clean energy superpower" and to cut emissions must be followed. Our next president should be someone who is aware of this threatening issue and do something about it, not someone who decides to ignore it.
Angelica C LHSG4 (CA)
I agree with you because improving the Earth should be one of our main priorities right now. Our generation and future generations are vulnerable to destruction, and more people need to recognize these signs so we could push for positive change. The last thing we need is a political leader who disregards such a large issue.
Jimmy P LHSG4 (California)
As stated by Hillary Clinton, climate change is "an urgent threat". While there are some who are skeptical like Donald Trump who states that it is a "hoax". I believe that the issue needs to be solve now. Obama's plan for Green energy is a good start, we also need to include reasearch for renewable energy as well.
Ellie (California)
Climate change is damaging our planet and the creatures living on it. We as human beings have done this to ourselves and we must do something to fix it. If we do nothing, we will only be leaving peril for future generations. And some may say that this is not out fight to fight, but then whose fight is this? If we wait any longer the damage will only increase. It is said that in the next 50 years, Florida will be submerged in seawater. Many cities and even states could suffer major flooding as the ice caps melt. There is no denying that climate change is a real issue in this word. We should not let our society vote for a president who would ignore our planet’s environmental needs. Our planet is suffering from a very real issue and it is our turn to rise up and do something to save our home and planet.
Harry H. (Pennsylvania)
Man-made climate change is one of the biggest concerns of our generation, yet the enormous oil and natural gas industries stand in the way of change. We need to be the generation to make a serious impact on this potentially devastating issue, and put a stop to the decimation of the ozone layer via greenhouse gas emissions.

Scientists are leading the way with a multitude of substitutes for crude oil and the fracking of nature land. They are capturing the methane emissions of biomatter through anaerobic digestion systems, they are harnessing the sun's energy through the implementation of solar panels, they are capturing wind with windmills spread out across vast landscapes, they are tapping in to the energy naturally flowing through streams with hydro-electric dams...and the list goes on.

So, why are we not veering off of this desolate path? The simple answer, I believe, is because the government, as well as we, the American people as a whole, do not share the serious concern that I have seen among other posters to this forum, about the devastating effects of global warming.

With everything I have said, there is one thing I ask: please continue to communicate our shared belief and understanding of where our environmental decisions as a nation will lead. It will determine the future of generations upon generations, in ways we can imagine at this point.
Nicolas (Pittsburgh, PA)
With all of the new movements towards space travel and colonizing Mars, it is time to bring our thoughts back down to Earth. This planet is our home, and we must preserve and protect it. While I can try to understand the skepticism that human actions are affecting the changing environment, the facts still stand that the planet is suffering and the climate is getting warmer. Although it may be a tough pill to swallow, we must trust science and the proof that things are happening. It is our duty as the dominant race on this planet to do anything we can to help the situation. Renewable energy seems like a good place to start, especially because solar and wind technologies are improving every day. On the other hand, we must not completely ignore the other sources of energy in our possession (e.g. coal, fracking). Our first priority, however, must be to make sure the extraction, processing, and use of the energy sources is safe for the environment. Perhaps, some of the profit from the non-renewable industry could go towards studies for and funding of renewable options. Regardless of what we think is the cause, we must accept that it is our responsibility to maintain this planet for as long as possible. After all, that would be despicable if we - a generation of change - were to doom our children's generation with a weakened home planet.
Nayna C. LHSG1 (California)
We as people should be caring for, cleaning, and helping our planet. Whatever affects the earth will eventually affect us too; we do need Eco friendly plans such as Obama's Clean Power Plan. Inventing more necessities that does not affect our Earth's climate as much should be one of our top priorities. For example, solar powered energy items and electric cars are both positive movements, but we should be doing more.
Francisco C LHSG1 (California)
The next president should be environmentally conscious. I am not saying that they should have their campaign fully devoted to the environment, but rather that they be aware of how fragile our environment is and that the cause of rapid climate change is highly impacted by human activity. Immigration issue aside, do we really want a president who wants to have fewer environmental regulations with a lot more fossil fuel drillings and who thinks that climate change is a hoax?
Victor G LHSG4 (CA)
Of course with any presidential election, one controversy is never the focus for election. Moreover, people are suffering around the United States because of climate change that has occurred without scientific data for years until now. If one of our possible future leaders decides not to take climate change and safety regulations into consideration just because he wants to increase his profits, not only Americans are in danger of being affected, but the whole world could be doomed with toxins.
Paige Veal (Zachary)
The republican party says that the climate change issue isn’t an issue that is immediate and needs a solution right away. I think personally that Hillary is correct because pushing a problem under your bed doesn't solve the problems. It just makes the problem harder to take care of and get out later. I think the best way to find a solution is to start now. We should be proactive before we all have to be reactive and a solution.
Yolanda O LHSG2 (California)
Climate change is a huge issue to the world today. I mean because of climate change the ice in the northern and southern hemispheres are melting, endangering animals such as the polar bear. I believe the climate change is due to a decrease in the ozone layer of the Earth, which helps protect everything from the sun's harmful rays. So because the Earth is losing its ozone layer, the temperature is increasing. Also, the chemicals causing the break down come from aerosol spray cans and refrigerants that are released into the air and most of the chemicals are man made. Most people don't care when it comes from environmental issues such as climate change because it doesn't really affect them but it will have long term effects on the Earth. So more people need to be informed and not necessarily stop using refrigerants and aerosol spray cans but use them sparingly.
Thu V LHSG4 (California)
I definitely agree with your perspective on climate change. Chemicals, such as aerosol spray cans or other man-made chemicals, are damaging the earth's natural resources. Sadly, the majority of the human population is ignorant regarding climate change. This important issue should be discussed more than reality television shows and other irrelevant topics, because climate change can make a big impact on the future generations, and not in a positive way.
Gus A (NC)
Donald trump dose not agree with climate change, Hilary knows it will be a very tall order. I'm curious to see what either candidate will do about such a huge problem. I think Hillary Clinton when talking about major world problems tries to reach out to every single individual while Donald Trump tries to appeal to a group.I don't think either of them are wrong or right they just have different approaches to get people to vote for them. In america there are a large amount of people care about climate change out of all of those people
72% of those people are democrats 24% those are republicans and the remaining 4% are nonpartisan.

Alicja HillE3H (Pennsylvania)
Audrey, I agree with you that greenhouse gasses are constantly spreading in our atmosphere. Without them humans simply couldn't live on our planet because climate would never be hospitable. The point of issue though stays behind the amount of greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere because additional release and overuse in the emission occur right now.
The Earth's climate has evolved throughout history and significant changes in both rising and decreasing of temperature could be noticed. Glaciers used to melt during extreme heat periods but Earth's surface had also been covered with ice through thousands of years. According to NASA "The current warming trend is of particular significance because most of [global warming] is very likely human-induced and proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1,300 years."
This can clearly show that the problem of global warming is its pace. One of the most serious causes of this process is global sea level rising. According to NASA rise amounted 17 centimeters just in the last century.
The rate in the last decade, however, is nearly double that. Such processes have a direct, harmful impact on people! For examlpe during my stay on Maldives, islands on the Indian Ocean I talked to families who are now about to live their country because islands are no longer going to exist. United States have a great impact on world's economy and therefore pollution and climate change. People should be aware of that choosing the next president.
Emily W (MD)
I feel like it is both us, humans, as well as natural causes. Cause you have to think, the world is on every device imaginable nowadays. Have you noticed that your devices get extremely hot when they are used for long periods of time? Not only that, but heavy equipment and big machinery gets overheated. With everybody on their devices all the time, all over the world, the temperatures are bound to rise, even just a little bit.
Nayna C. LHSG1 (California)
I agree with you. We all should cut down on using electrical devices in order to help our Earth, and in return, it'll help us and the future generations.
makayla (NCUHS)
Cutting down on device use is not going to single handedly save the earth from global warming. It would have been helpful if you shared a link with the article that explains this so I could have seen more clearly where you were coming from. To help future generations we need to elect a president that is going to acknowledge that global warming is a serious problem. If there is not a solution to this growing problem then it is not going to end very well for generations to come.
Jenny Wu (Michigan)
With politics already being so polarizing in our country, one would think that an issue regarding our planet, our home- Earth- would bring people together. Obviously, this hasn't been the case. There are some people, like Donald Trump himself, that regard climate change as a "hoax". However, with shrinking ice sheets, sea levels rising, and warming oceans the evidence is clear: climate change is real. In addition to that, levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are at 400 parts per million- a definite increase since the Industrial Revolution. To put things in perspective, before 1950 (only 67 years ago), the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide, for centuries, was not above 300 parts per million. This means that this is not just the earth fluctuating as some say. It is ignorance that does not see this issue, and it is important to recognize that one of the two major political party candidates "has put climate change at the heart of her campaign." For more information on climate change and evidence that scientists have gathered, I invite you to check out this website: http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
Olivia K (Michigan)
Even though there are some trends that may contradict the idea that global warming is caused by human actions and involvement in the environment, there is also evidence that humans indeed play a role in hurting our planet. For example, China experiences heavy fog on a daily basis due to the burning of fossil fuels. Likewise, animals, such as the polar bear, in the arctic are going extinct as they are suffering from lack of resources, often blamed on the pollution humans impose on the environment. I strongly believe that it is important that humans take on the responsibility of caring for the planet by reducing the amount of pollution exposed to the environment. I hope that one day an effective system that aims to reduce pollution and increase nourishment to the earth is implemented.
Jillian B (Maryland)
Yes, I would have to concur with that. Since scientific studies consistently find links between human activities and climate change, we should divert our attention from making small actions with small impacts and focus on more cooperative approaches such as participating in direct actions and protest, getting involved with our communities as well as contributing to environmental organizations. In short, we must act collectively to come up with methodical solutions for an issue of major importance that is climate change.
Jillian B (Maryland)
When it comes to the topic of climate change, most of us will readily agree that this phenomenon is a significant issue. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what causes climate change. Whereas "More than 90 percent of climate scientists agree that human activity causes climate change", "many Americans, both Democrats and Republicans, are skeptical". The Republicans' disbelief can be traced from their judgement that "scientists’ findings are influenced most of the time by their own career interests or political leanings." but has been contradicted by a poll conducted by Pew Research Center in 2009, "Both scientists and the public overwhelmingly say it is appropriate for scientists to become active in political debates. Virtually all scientists (97%) endorse their participation in debates about these issues, while 76% of the public agrees."
Desiree Malshuk (Vt)
Do you really want a person in the office who thinks global warming is a hoax? Donald Trump wants to do the opposite of what Obama is doing to help with global warming. On this subject, I completely agree with Hillary Clinton. Global Warming has became a real long term crisis. Hillary wants to better the Earth by cutting the energy waste in American homes, schools, and hospitals according to https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/climate/
The best thing to do is tackle global warming sooner than later, other than thinking of it as a hoax.
Lexi Demers (VT)
I believe that climate change is a real issue and it's clearly affecting the earth, but we haven't done anything about it. What we need to do to fix this is we have to stop burning fossil fuels like oil and coal to run our cars and factories. We need to start using more natural resources so we can fix the climate change issue.
Tuyet N LHSG2 (CA)
I too agree with you Lexi, climate change is a huge problem and if we don't do anything about it, the problem will only get worse. Climate change will not only affect us but animals as well, which will lead to some sort of shift in the food chain, which will then affect all organisms. At this rate if humans do not change, we will be heading towards a road of destruction even extinction.
Corrinne (VT)
I do believe that human activity is to blame for global climate change. We are putting bad chemicals into the air with all of our large businesses. The businesses create smog and other harmful things that eventually end up in the atmosphere. Even though I think it would be great if Hillary was able to "generate enough renewable energy to power every home in America" I do not think it is realistic. It will cost a lot of money to pay for all the alternative ways of powering your home and no one will want to pay the expenses. I do agree with her though that we should try to "use cleaner fuels, and more efficient cars, boilers, ships, and trucks." (https://www.hillaryclinton.com/issues/climate/) This will lower the amount of harmful chemicals going into the environment.
Ally Harris (Vermont)
I think that climate change in some cases is caused by humans but in others is caused just by the earth doing its thing. I do not think this is a threatening challenge to our time. I believe that we should take care of our earth and take away threatening forms of pollution. I think we need to eliminate waste and reduce things like light pollution so that we can make our home a more beautiful place but also help eliminate the possibility of a threat. Climate change is natural for the earth to go through. The earth goes through hot and cold phases. Because this happens, some years will bring warmer winters and summers and some will bring cold, cold winters and mild summers. It is just a part of the world's natural "thing". If we do our best to get rid of pollution of all sorts, we can prevent future threat.
Kaylah (VT)
I 100% agree with Hilary that climate change and global warming is, "an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time." This has been a problem for a while now and it just keeps getting worse and worse because no one has really dealt with it or tried to make it better, instead they just push it aside and act like its not a big deal. But, if you haven't noticed, our winters aren't as cold as they used to be a while back, and our summers are getting hotter. Also if you add in all the emissions and pollution from cars, and factories, all that's going into the o-zone which is getting smaller from all this. Also using all the fossil fuels we do, were gonna run out soon, because once it's gone its gone and what are we gonna run off of then according to what Donald Trump agrees with, about continuing the drilling. But, we can all pitch in and make this better by little changes, such as shutting off the lights behind you, or using less electricity, taking shorter showers, etc. Just by making little changes like these, it will benefit us all in the long run, with a healthier, cleaner environment.
Izabella Silva (Michigan)
One thing to ma that is absolutely terrifying is the fact that people genuinely think climate change isn't real. Yes the temperature fluctuates every year, but climate change is real. The HARM that we are doing to our planet, by deforestation, overpopulation, and burning fossil fuels is impacting us now but one day we will be able to see the huge mess that we have been making for years. Now, i do believe in climate change, but even if you dont, please take time to research all of the harmful things we are doing to our world. Climate change, and the destruction of our planet is going to affect all of US. Not just certain countries that do the most fracking or produce the most fossil fuels. Destroying our earth is going have long standing affects on everyone on this planet. So whether you believe in climate change or not, open your eyes and realize our world today is destroying our world tomorrow.
Lexi (NY)
Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing the nation right now. This is a real issue it is not made up like Donald Trump seems to think so. The next president will play a huge role in decide how we will approach the issue of climate change, who do we want make the decisions someone who thinks it's a made up hoax or someone who is actually going to get something done? As a nation we need to come together to help decrease the amount of emissions we are letting off to help the earth become what it once was.
Jenny Wu (Michigan)
Climate change is a pressing issue that not only affects our nation but the entire world. I agree that whoever is elected as our president will definitely affect how we as a country work together to combat this issue. Donald Trump has made it clear that he has no interest in supporting climate change policy, even saying that "he would "cancel" the accord reached last year in France". We are in need of a leader that will take climate change as a serious issue and have plans ready to put in action, which obviously isn't Donald Trump.
Briana Downs (Franklin School of Innovation)
I agree with you. I believe that Donald Trump isn’t going to try to do something about climate change. Saying that, I believe he isn’t fit to run our country if he isn’t going to be serious about every issue that we face. He actually thinks that climate change is “an expensive hoax” that the Chinese made up. We need president that will try to help us with climate change or a at least try their best to do something about it.
Gabriel Lepine (VT)
The climate change should be one of our biggest world wide problems that should be but it isn't being dealt with immediately. Yes we need the energy to run the world now but we need the right kind of energy. We don't need the energy that earth needs we need the energy that has an unlimited supply of it. By the rate of how fast the world is using oil we will run out. We need to need to the air as a new source of energy. Climate change is being affected by us too. We keep building these huge skyscrapers and the only way we can do that is if we cut down trees and use the metal that came from earth to build buildings that we don't need. So my solution is that we meed to stop using the oil as soon as we can and stop from buildings that we don't need from being built.
Michael K (MD)
The standard manner of thinking about the issue of climate change contends that we, as a nation, should focus on the actions of our head of government. Although the commander in chief of these United States he may be, President Obama's belief "that climate change is the greatest long-term threat facing the world" is nearly dismissable. Likewise, his being "a central broker of the Paris climate agreement", or even that "his polices [are] abuses of executive power" should be downplayed, in tandem. For the civilized of our modern world, the existence of climate chnange is no longer held in contention, rather, it is what we can do cause real effect in slowing this global problem. Outlined in our constituition, the US government is divided into three equal branches, of which the president is NOT one. Our focus on one individual takes away from the truly desired end goal of analyzing how effective our policies are. Congress, unlike the president, is a branch of our government, and we, as citizens, must give notoriety to the nearly faceless individuals that dwell withing this legislative body. By scrutinizing the actions of many, we truly reflect how effective we are as a group.
Kiyah V (Maryland)
Americans are deeply divided on climate change. However, no one can deny the fact that climate change is an evident complication. Party identification definitely influences people's views. Americans need to disregard party identification and focus on the bigger issue which is the environment. Nathan's theory of educating ourselves on this topic is extremly useful because it sheds insight on the fact that climate change does not get enough attention as other topics.
Lizzy (Newport, VT)
Even though climate change is one of the biggest issues in the world, it gets some of the least attention. We are at fault for some climate change but no one recognizes what we're doing wrong. By taking fuels from the ground & burning everything around us, it's ruining the environment. Hillary has extremely good ideas to help with it, such as cutting down the digging for fuels and saving more natural Resources, but Trump just says it's all "a hoax" and wants to continue digging into the earth, not realizing that soon enough there won't be anything left. Personally, Hillary's ideas to help climate change are much smarter, but I think that even though he can be extremely rude, Trump is a better candidate, but needs to open his eyes to this particular issue.
Michael K (MD)
Although I agree with you [Lizzy] up to the conclusion that climate change and pollution are responsible for damage to the environment, it makes little sense that "Trump is a better candidate". If climate change truly is a real issue that we all comprehend, it fails to make sense that a candidate that ignores such a global issue could in any way be good.
Jenny Wu (Michigan)
I agree with you that climate change is one the most pressing issues that we as humans have to realize and tackle. I also agree that Hillary has good ideas to combat this issue; however I am confused as to why you think "Trump is the better candidate" when you think that "he can be extremely rude" and that "Hillary's ideas to help climate change are much smarter". Even if Trump does "open his eyes to this particular issue" he would have to have plans ready to combat this issue. Currently Trump is dismissing climate change as "a hoax" and "would "cancel" the accord reached last year in France". From what I am seeing, it doesn't seem like "Trump is the better candidate" on this issue.
Izzy (HillE3H)
Lizzy,
I completely agree with your statement that "climate change is one of the biggest issues in the world", yet your statement that climate change is not being talked about enough is only relevant to the Republican Party and their candidate Donald Trump. If you are concerned about climate change and its impact on Earth, you should really take a better look at both major parties and their candidates.
Because you have already expressed that "Hillary has extremely good ideas", I do not feel like I have to further explain her stance on global warming. On the other hand, Donald Trump, like you stated, claims that climate change is "a hoax." Throughout the G.O.P. Debates and now the presidential debates, Trump has not only denied climate change, but wants to keep pushing for more harmful practices for the sake of the economy.
I think that your thoughts about Hillary are completely correct. Her ideas "are much smarter." Where I feel disconnected is when you say, "even though he can be extremely rude, Trump is a better candidate, but needs to open his eyes to this particular issue." You are being very hypocritical because you previously stated "no one recognizes what we're doing wrong." If you feel that climate change needs to be talked about more, Trump is not your candidate. He denies global warming and is part of the very group that does not recognize what they are doing wrong. Politeness and political correctness aside, Trump is not your candidate based on your beliefs.
Jacob (MI)
Climate change is a problem that we face in the world. The stress we are putting on the environment with the mass use of fossil fuels is ridiculous. As a country we should try to switch to cleaner sources of energy. Nuclear power is a fantastic alternative. It's more efficient that any other from, its also cleaner than burning fossil fuels. But people are afraid of it due to the events at Chernobyl and Fukushima. The events at Chernobyl were the results of turning off safety features and the reactor at Fukushima was hit by a massive earthquake and then a tsunami both of which are extremely rare events and we should try to switch to nuclear power, solar, or wind power in order to cut down emissions
Zoe (NJ)
While climate change may not be entirely the fault of humans, there is so much we can do to help the Earth. I do believe that we have greatly contributed to the increase of global warming even if it is naturally inevitable. Climate change has occurred naturally so it is understandable to think that it is simply occurring again. However we still must make an effort to save our environment because whether we have caused global warming or not, it is affecting us all. Pollution is undeniably caused by humans so we must make an effort to clean up what we can and cut down on further pollution. Also our use of fossil fuels has been damaging and it would be wise to switch to cleaner energy sources. There is so much individuals can do to help. It is understandable to believe that we are not the sole cause of climate change but denying it altogether could be detrimental.
Emma (U.S.A.)
The debate over climate change, and how to proceed with the issue, is undeniably one of the most important discussions there are right now in the world. The idea that a presidential candidate, a man who could become one of the most powerful in the world, has openly called climate change "a hoax" is baffling. The way we pollute and drill and waste is growing daily, our impact as Americans is one of the largest and most shameful around, yet Donald J. Trump would be willing to ignore this, simply because it may result in a loss of votes or sponsors. It is so easy for someone like Mr. Trump to ignore this problem because while it is urgent, it is not of the kind that can blow up in his face immediately. By the time climate change begins to destroy civilization, by the time it ruins the world we have all been working so hard to create for centuries, Mr. Trump will be dead. Thusly, he doesn't care about the Paris conference, and reducing our environmental footprint, or at all about anything outside of himself. Every time someone with the disdain Trump shows is elected into a seat of power, climate change grows stronger, and the chances of Earth's survival grow slimmer.
Skyler Manczak (Michigan)
The discussion of climate change has risen over the years. New studies in science have showed us the facts and what could happen in years to come if we don't act upon it now. The topic of climate change occurred in the presidential debates and the republican candidate Donald Trump doesn't believe Climate change is happening. It is happening, Trump wants to increase fossil fuel production and decrease environmental regulations. If Trump becomes president then the future of our environment is at stake. If everyone doesn't come together and makes a difference then the world we know now will be completely changed in 50 years.
Nathan (MI)
Our country needs to do a better job at educating ourselves on this topic. There are many issues we face that seem more "newsworthy" than climate change so I think that is why this topic doesn't get much attention as other topics. Also, our politicians don't understand climate change. In 2015, Sen. James Inhofe, R-Oklahoma brought a snowball on the senate floor and used that as an example that global warming doesn't exist. Global Warming isn't just about the earth getting warmer. It just drives me nuts how our elected leaders don't take the time to learn about this issue, regardless of party affiliating.
AraigionsG (MD)
Nathan, i completely agree with you. we as a country need to focus on all topics that are of an urgent matter. in order to do this we must be educated about the topic first. it is an undeniable fact that sea levels are rising more and more due to global warming. just between 1961 and 2003 global sea levels rose 8 inches. it is said that by 2100, sea levels will have risen 31 inches.
yet many people especially republicans don't acknowledge climate change or they question whether climate change is caused by human activity.
i agree with the Democratic stance on this certain issue and i believe Hillary has good plans on how to slow down the effects of global warming.
such as generating a lot of renewable energy with solar panels, cutting energy waste in american homes and reducing american oil consumption.
Haley Dietz (Michigan)
In my opinion, climate change is a huge issue that could be discussed endlessly. While Bernie Sanders was probably the most eco-friendly candidate in the race, Hillary Clinton offers some great solutions as well. If you are concerned about environmentalism at all, you pretty much only have one candidate choice, which is sad in my opinion. After all the progress we made in Paris, it would be heartbreaking to have Trump reverse all of that and continue to dig for fossil fuels. I am happy to support Clinton because even if her plan for a more green America isn't 100% successful, we will still be better off than we are today! In my opinion, progress is progress, no matter how small. However, I am optimistic about what she will do for the United States.
Morgan (MI)
Climate change is definitely a real problem and it's happening a lot faster than we think. Being a first time voter, I really don't know whose views I can align with more, I think that Clinton's views are more realistic than Trump's. How can our planet continue to serve as our home when massive increases and the endless amount of emissions that come with our everyday necessities keep piling up? It can't. Until someone steps up, things are only going to get worse.
Emma (U.S.A.)
I definitely agree, really climate change is about to catch up with us, especially in the U.S. We need a president who understands it and who will actually be able to help us.
Shea W (Michigan)
Climate change is a clearly a pressing issue. There is valid evidence supporting nearly all of their claims. Yet the leaders of our country avoid the topic, Why? That is my only question. People need to be informed, and most are too lazy to research past the nightly news. This issue needs to blow up, and everyone needs to start respecting our home planet.
Robert Walkowiak (Michigan)
The issue of Climate Change has been a highly debated issue in recent years and it's something that I believe needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. When it comes to the presidency, Hillary Clinton is no doubt the more favorable candidate when it comes to promoting the fight against climate change. She has made it clear in her policy that climate change is going to be at the forefront of the issues she deals with during her time in the white house, which is exactly what we need considering the trends of increasing temperatures worldwide that have been occurring in recent years. When it comes to Donald Trump, he has made it very clear that climate change is the least of his worries and getting the country back on top business-wise is his main priority. This is what confuses me because recent studies have shown that using renewable energy is cheaper then the current fossil-fuel methods that we currently rely on. So in reality changing the way our country produces energy is a smart business decision as well as a smart environmental one. Climate change is an issue that has to be dealt with now. If we don't act soon then eventually the results will be irreversible.
Isabella N. (VT)
I agree, climate change should be every candidates top concern, because it affects everyone. We have forced many species into extinction, are cutting down rainforests, polluting the air, and using up the only fossil fuels we have. The fact that this is happening is appalling to begin with, and its honestly ridiculous that Donald Trump isn't concerned with our planet. Hilary has the right idea with trying to fix our ecosystem.
Callen McDonough (MI)
It is undisputed that we are emitting an unsafe amount of carbon into our atmosphere. The global concentration of Carbon has recently surpassed 400 parts per million which is insanely dangerous for our planet. Because of the fossil fuel's heavy involvement in politics, it is hard to know who actually still "opposes" the fact of climate change. I agree completely with President Obama's belief that "climate change is the greatest long-term threat facing the world.."
Grace Giroux (VT)
Climate change has been a problem for years but as time goes on it gets worse and worse. For this particular issue I feel as though Hillary Clinton's views make much more sense than Donald Trump's. Trump is basically pretending that climate change doesn't exist when there is scientific evidence to prove it. He wants to continue to drill into the ground for fuel and pollute our air. On the other hand, Clinton has identified the problem and has devised a plan to fix it. She wants to find power sources such as solar panels to fuel our country rather than emitting greenhouse gases and fossil fuels into our air. There are still positive pieces of Trump's position such as that the fuel will be much more affordable, and that many new jobs will be created. However, Clinton's proposal will better our country in the long run and overall be a healthier and more productive approach to addressing this issue. Clinton's plan not only will help regulate climate change, but will also cut down on our pollution levels and help save our ozone layer which is shrinking because humans are polluting the air.
Sam D. (Packer Collegiate Institute, NYC)
The issue surrounding climate change is that the adults of this generation will not be around to witness the consequences of their actions. The burden instead falls on our generation. We were born into a damaged planet, living in New York City the threat of rising sea levels is all too real, and reminders of the destructive power of Hurricane Sandy are all around us. Just tonight I visited a school that had to relocate for a month because their first two floors were flooded. I don't understand how Donald Trump can deny that. We as a nation need to invest in alternative energy sources and we need to enact a carbon tax that would curtail growing emissions from the U.S. and foreign countries. We can't afford to let Donald Trump take office in January because a man who doesn't understand that climate change is real, let one of the biggest problems facing our nation cannot be trusted with our future. In contrast, if America were "the world's clean energy superpower" as Hillary Clinton plans to make it, then we would not only stop emissions from the U.S. (the second biggest contributor of greenhouse gases), but we would be able to pressure other countries into more alternative energy sources the same way the Paris Climate Accord did. I will be on the edge of my seat on the night of November 8th because my future, and the future of our planet depends on it.
Rush Ehrhart (North HUnterdon, New Jersey)
Donald Trump claims that he will make America great again but as I was told America used to be an amazingly beautiful place and mostly because of the landscape and environment. Many people, including my ancestors, could live off the land and survive by themselves gathering and growing food. Since then the earth’s population has grown to many times the size of what it used to be and the environment has changed negatively. Not saying that population is the key problem to climate change but it is the lack of knowledge the population has about this topic. Certainly, Trump does not have the common sense about it especially when you call it a hoax, as if some other force was acting upon us and is changing are weather. The U.S. is one of the main suppliers of greenhouses gases to the world and this is harming the earth’s climate from all the gas getting trapped in our environment increasing the heat of our climate. This temperature increase is causing the polar ice caps to melt which rises the sea levels. It seems like Hillary knows more about this topic and has done her research. She will make this one of her top priorities unlike Donald who will leave it to the side but will bring it up in case he needs a joke to tell.
Gabe L (North Carolina)
I completely agree as someone who has to grow up in climate change I would love to see the earth return to it’s original state. I would also like to see new ways in which clean energy’s are produced and the ways in which clean energy’s are already produced should be readily available to everyone. Some people say global warming is a hoax but all they have to do is look outside and they’ll be able to tell the difference, “According to IPCC 2007 report, sea levels will rise by 7-23 inches by the end of this century due to global warming.” “The last two decades of the 20th century have been hottest in the last 400 years, according to climate studies.” “The Montana Glacier National Park has only 25 glaciers instead of 150 that were there in the year 1910.” These are only 3 facts about global warming and they aren’t the worst, if this generation does not dramatically change our fossil fuel emission then the sea level will rise to a record high and cover most of the land on earth. Here are some other ways in which global warming is affecting the earth here is a list of 35 global warming facts http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/various-global-warming-facts.php.
Cali (Vt)
Climate change is real. The 2015-2016 winter, at least for Vermont, was very strange compared to what I grew up with. Growing up, my winters were always cold and snow usually fell before Halloween and lasted until at least April, unlike last year. The winter of 2015-2016 was warm and barely snowed until about the New Year's Eve/Day. The summers feel as though they are getting warmer and the season of fall has become warmer then what they have always been. In fact, my mother has said that her childhood winters were colder than what they are now. Many are worried that we are going to lose our polar ice caps, and frankly, I am too. What happened to the Titanic may never happen again due to climate change, also known as global warming. What we need to do is cut down on our use of electricity and start focusing on our planet and what it needs. Far too many people don't realize what them driving to and from work everyday is doing to our planet, but they need to, and it needs to happen as soon as it possibly can, otherwise the whole world may never see snow again. If you grew up as I did with a white Christmas, think about your future children and grandchildren and think of them not being able to enjoy the soft and cold snow like you did. Think about it because, is that something you really want?
Sophie (VT)
" Global warming is an expensive hoax", said by Trump. But how could an issue that is affecting our lives be a hoax? Global warming isn't something to take lightly. It is currently affecting the quality of our lives and it can only get worse. The climate changes aren't only affecting us humans, but also the plants, animals, and our environment. To fix the problem people have to pitch in and change their habits. Turning off the lights when you leave the room or even using less air conditioning which requires a lot of energy. We also need to stop drilling for oil. Not only is the burning of the fuel bad for the environment, but oil is also a fossil fuel so once it is gone we can't make more of it. The hydrogen cars that are now being created are a good alternative because the water vapors being emitted aren't harmful to the environment. Also we more then likely won't run out of water so the resource is easy to access. Overall everyone needs to pitch in for the big scheme of things in order for this planet to continue prospering.
Haley Dietz (Michigan)
I agree completely! How can Trump possibly think global warming is a hoax when there are cities, like Beijing, covered in smog?! The smog is a result of the burning of fossil fuels, and continuing to drill for more will get us nowhere except into a deeper hole. Climate change has been an issue for decades and it has been neglected until now. After the progress made in Paris, it would break my heart to see Tump elected and have all of it gone to waste.
Tanner K (Michigan)
I disagree with you because global warming has not been proven despite people saying that it has. If you look at the history of earth there are periods where the earth's temperature increases and where the earth's temperature decreases to try and balance the overall temperature as it is not going to stay the same. This has been a common trend among the history of the earth. It has just as much credibility as global warming and is another way to look at the situation. I also disagree with you when you say that water is not going to run out. Water is the most important resource of our planet. That is what allows earth to be habitable. We should not use water to fuel us just because it is easy to access, If we use water the same way we used oil our planet wouldn't be habitable in the near future as every living thing on earth needs water to survive.
Olivia K (Michigan)
I strongly agree with this statement. I believe that it is quite evident that climate change has become a topic that needs to be taken more seriously. If we can't properly nourish our own earth, negative impacts will become more and more popular. Trump needs to recognize the importance of climate change, and how the earth desperately needs to be rescued.
Log (Vt)
I don’t believe that the United Nations know what climate change actually is and how it’s caused. I’ve read numerous articles that quoted completely different statistics. Most of the scientists doing the research don’t know how to explain the correlation between temperatures, and C02 production. One scientist’s research even shows that the last 15 years have been a cooling off period. The climate change debate seems to revolve around monetary policy, instead of offering solutions.
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/global-warming-temperature-very-clos...
Haley Dietz (Michigan)
You're absolutely right. The cause and even specifics of climate change are all over the place. However, I think a good majority of Americans can agree that polluting the environment is an issue that we can't afford to put off much longer.
Sydney (VT)
Climate change has been going on for a long time. Some people may deny its existence, but there is scientific proof to back it up for example all of the CO2 emissions that humans have created with factories, cars and more. https://www.skepticalscience.com/empirical-evidence-for-global-warming.htm
Not only is climate change real but so is global warming. Right now according to the patterns the earth goes through of warming and cooling we are supposed to be cooling. Yet everywhere is getting warmed. Winter isn't as cold, Summers even hotter. What else is there to explain what is happening in the world right now. Before there were giant factories and and cars the world was going through the regular cycles of warming and cooling. So I believe that humans are now 'controlling' climate change. Something needs to change so that we can have a greener/safer/cleaner environment. So I believe more in Hillary's plan this is "an urgent threat and a defining challenge of our time" that we need to stop.
Ty (VT)
I believe that pollution is real, and emissions, but I can't prove that it is human's fault when it comes to global warming. However, there is strong scientific evidence that global warming is real, with scientists finding massive ice melt off over the years and core drilling into the polar ice. I can say that there were natural global changes, as the ice age is an example, and then a millennium later, the earth is starting to heat up. This could be due to our population going from 2 billion to 7 billion in fifty years. How can our planet sustain itself with this massive increase and all the emissions that come with growth from our vehicles and factories? Some of these things have to be having an impact on our planet and need to be taken very seriously and so I am in favor of Obamas and Clintons move to protect our planet and global warming is a real issue.
Zoe (NJ)
I believe that humans are to blame for increased climate change. We have caused so much pollution and we have been abusing the environment for so long. I understand your point that some of the climate change may be due to natural global changes, but I think we have accelerated the change.
Olivia K (Michigan)
I appreciate your stance on this topic as there are some interesting trends that may contradict the presence of global warming, yet there are also serious consequences that have only gotten worse as time goes on and the world continues to face environmental challenges. We can't expect our planet to sustain a population of billions of people if we can't even nourish and save our own environment. It is very clear that a system aiming to save the planet and prevent global warming needs to be implemented.
Jessica Wang (Massachusetts)
Climate change is a real and incredibly important issue, as it affects our entire planet. Extreme storms, increasing temperatures, melting glaciers and ice sheets, rising sea levels--these are all indications of climate change that were caused by humans. If the world continues to be lax on how we regard unchecked emissions, then our planet may not be able to support our growing population.

This is a conversation that needs to occur more often; not only because it continues to be a growing problem, but also because it will directly affect both our generation and the generations to come.
Shea W (Michigan)
I appreciate Jessica's call to attention, I firmly agree that the climate convo needs to occur more often. It is clearly a pressing issue, yet it is so pushed back. Why? Why do the leaders of America avoid it? That is what I don't understand.
Taylor Labbee (Vermont)
Climate change is happening and we all have the power to help by just putting in a little effort. Simple things like shorter showers and turning a light off when you leave a room can make a huge impact on the earth whether you think so or not. Many things that are leading to this climate change are all things that humans do that can be fixed. So, i'd have to agree with Hillary because this is an issue that needs to be taken care of.
Connor Davis (VT)
I completely agree with you. Ignoring climate change and acting like it doesn't exist, as Donald Trump supports, is not the right direction for our country, or the world. Climate change is real, and is happening right now. As a result of our immense amount of gas emissions into the atmosphere we have caused global warming. Only us humans can fix this issue that we started, or else it will be too late, so I strongly agree with Hillary Clinton's take on this topic, as she said not only is climate change going to be her top priority, she is planning to cut gas emissions by 80% by 2050. CLimate change is an urgent threat, and is going to be detrimental if we do not take action immediately.
Anjunae (Illinois)
It seems that we all agree on this issue. We should focus on what we can do to slow the detrimental effects of climate change. With a simple google search of "How can i help the environment," we can all make a change! Let's do this together for our future.
Sky (MI)
I completely agree, for the most part we all seem to have the same views on this issue. At this point we are only stating our beliefs that everyone else has already stated. Climate Change is a very big deal, however voicing our opinions will not result in a change. We must do something about it.
Sam Roberts (Vt)
Climate change is a very big issue that we should all focus on. We need to cut down on our emissions. We all need to do our part by turning off lights and shorting electricity usage. Another thing that is bad is that we are getting closer to a point of no return. Scientific American magazine says "According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the federal scientific agency tasked with monitoring the health of our oceans and atmosphere, the current average annual rate of increase of 1.92 ppm means we could reach the point of no return by 2042." This is bad for us. That is only 26 years!!! We need to turn our world around. Even though I am not a huge fan of Hillary Clinton I think that she is doing better then trump at this issue. Trump is just denying that it is a thing. That is not what we need. The website that I got the facts from was: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/have-we-passed-the-point-of-n...
Joel (VT)
I completely agree. I think that the population of earth is procrastinating when it comes to the issue of global warming. There are those that deny its existence, such as Trump, and there are those who are just not putting in the work to help the earth out. We simply have to do a few simple things each day to help slow the effects of climate change. The longer we wait to start doing things that lower our usage of resources (water, electricity etc.) the less time we give the earth to make a comeback. Remember we only have 26 years!
Peyton Gilson (Vermont)
I agree with Sam on this issue. Normally I do not agree with the way Hillary Clinton deals with political issues but on this topic I believe Hillary has a better plan of how to deal with this rapidly increasing problem. Climate change and clean energy is a major problem that if we don't correct it now it will only build and effect us as the next generation. Renewable energy is also a major issue right now Carbon Dioxide in the air is at its highest in 650,000 years, "nine out of ten of the warmest years on record have occurred in the 2000" {NASA} and lastly in the last 100 years the sea level has risen over 178 mm. If you want more facts that prove that we need to take action on climate and energy issues then visit http://climate.nasa.gov/. We need to take action because in 26 years it is going to be to late.
Jai (NY)
I think Climate Change is a huge problem and it can really be quite detrimental to our world. Climate Change would cause arctic ice to melt, which would in turn cause cold water to become a top layer of the oceans because it is not dense enough to sink under salt water - and the patterns of circulation will be disturbed. Not only will this cause many plants and animals we get from the ocean to die out or mutate because of adaptations, it will also cause Western Europe to become a lot colder.

I support Hilary Clinton's plan to slow down global warming. On a large scale, wind and solar energy would help do this and create jobs at the same time. On a smaller scale turning off the lights, opening windows and doors instead of using A.C, and carpooling would help. Scientists have proven that Global Warning is real thing, negating Donald Trump's claim that it's a hoax.
Emma Meunier (Vermont)
I agree with what you said because the climate change is caused mostly from people so why not have the people try and fix that? There isn't much we can do scientifically but if every person does a simple thing like carpooling, opening windows and doors, using wind and solar energy, etc. It doesn't sound like much but it could really change our planet's climate.
Kathryn Maurice (Vt)
I totally agree with you, Emma Meunier. We caused it, can't we fix it? The sad fact is, that we cant reverse what we have already done, but we can slow it down, by yes, carpooling, biking, walking, etc. Global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Mr. Trump thinks its a hoax, but how is that possible? Even republican scientists agree that it is happening, and if we deny it, it won't do anything good. Hillary is right on this one, this is real, and live, and something needs to be done about it. We cant fix it, but we can slow it down at least.
StrikeX114 (Does it Matterville?)
I believe that Climate Change is one of the most pressing issues of today. With absolutely positive evidence over decades of research from multiple major organizations including NOAA and NASA, there is no possible way that it is a hoax from China. If nothing is done, we may end up sent back to the Stone Age referenced in the movie The Core. I firmly believe that gas companies must release all innovations made by their research teams that they have stockpiled over the years so that humanity benefits and not their pockets instead.
Jaidyn (Pennsylvania)
People should definitely take climate change more seriously. Its a real big problem and some people don't even know it! We should start making bigger efforts to turn off lights when we aren't in a room and take shorter showers.
Henry N. (NC)
We as humans treat the earth like it was made for us, and we can do what we want with it, no matter the consequences, but that is not true. We need to treat the earth with respect, as it is our home, and realize before we make any rash decisions. The U.S just signed the Paris Agreement, which is an agreement to cut down on green house gas usage, and try to slow climate change. " Global warming is an expensive hoax." Donald Trump said, I feel if we don't act, then we can't fix the problems we have created.

Henry N. from North Carolina makes a great point, the earth is not at our disposal. We can't take advantage of our home anymore, it's time for some earth respect.
Annabelle (Princeton)
I agree with your point of view, but how do you suggest we as the United States go about minimizing the effects and slowing the growth of climate change? The Paris agreement was an encouraging first step, but how can we keep this momentum going? How do you suggest we keep in mind economic stability vs. long-term climate stability? The Supreme Court blocked Obama's Clean Power Plan in February, halting the progress he was hoping to achieve on the grounds of its economic ramifications. What are your thoughts towards that decision?
Sam K (NC)
Every person in the U.S.A needs to really notice that in a few decades our world might end. Also we need to reallise that our next president could either make the problem no longer a problem or maybe keep the problem. We also need to stop playing on our play ground the world and rebuild it. Hillary Clintons plan is to cut energy use, install solar panels, over half a billion, and reduce oil usage. Donald Trump really just doesn'tknow there are even changes."There is snow every where"-Republican news. How will they solve our problem?
Jai (NY)
Yes, I completely agree. Our next president needs to step forward and change the way people see this issue and bring some SERIOUS awareness to it. Donald Trump thinks China has made up Global Warming, for some reason. (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/jun/03/hillary-c... We need to see some action.
Nathan (MI)
I agree with you because global warming has consistently been proven to not only exist but mainly be man made. Global warming and climate change don't simply mean the earth is getting warmer. Many politicians aren't educated on the topic and should be in order to completely understand it.
Emma (VT)
So who are you agreeing with? Donald Trump or Hillary? I agree with you. Instead of sitting around and letting the problem become worse, we should get up and actually do something about it. Donald Trump plans to keep digging into the world and keep taking those fuels, that cannot come back. Hilary plans to install solar panels and use less of everything.
Dana Hillebrecht (Packer Colligate Institute)
People should take climate change more seriously. It's a real problem and some people don't even believe in it! We should start making a bigger effort to turn off lights when we leave rooms and to take shorter showers. Unlike gun control or other big issues, a little awareness and some small actions could make a big impact.
Natasha F (VT)
I agree that if we do the little things like shorter showers and not keeping a lamp on if it's unneeded when can make a difference. If we all cut even a few minutes off from our shower and used a little less electricity it would add up if all 318.9 million of us did it. Even cutting off two minuets of shower time would equals 637800000 minutes less electricity used for showers. and that's just for one day if we kept it up it would be a total of 232797000000 minutes which is about 232.8 billion minutes.
Jillian B (Maryland)
Although I agree that climate change is something that should be taken seriously, I do not believe that making small actions such as turning off lights and taking shorter showers could make a big impact. Individual efforts are important in ensuring that we are not 'all talk' however, temperature levels will continue to rise if that was all we did.
Kyle (Vermont)
Simply, I believe at this rate climate change will drastically effect the world as we currently know it. For whose fault it is, I believe it a large amount to do with humans. As we release many harmful things into the air. As a solution, wind and solar power are good although they may not be efficient enough or they may cost more. Hydro electricity may also be an option based on location but, the same restrictions may apply as above.
Tommy (Vermont)
I completely agree with your statement, but I would like to add that solar power is the most inefficient of the clean energies. It uses precious minerals and produces the least amount of energy of those three. It also is harmful to the environment, the sunlight that is reflected off can be strong enough to kill birds, and we have to make very large clearings for solar fields.
Log (Vt)
How do you think the millions of acres of forest fires affect the atmospheric pollution? Forest fires are a natural phenomenon. Do scientists factor in this natural occurrence when measuring human impact on our atmosphere?
Emily (MI)
I agree with your opinions and appreciate your sense of urgency but rationalism. I believe that climate change is fully the result of humans, and it is our responsibility to fix it. Sense the industrial revolution we have been increasing the carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and have just now realized the consequences. I think that your solutions are innovative and would work well.
