Donald Trump’s Latest Birther Lie

Fool me twenty times, shame on sycophant media.
Jonebb (Herndon, Virginia)
Please, please, media, take this as a wake up call. The amount of time that NYTimes spent on the Clinton Foundation should have been spent on Trump's record of helping no one but himself over the years. Kudos to the Washington Post reporting about Trump, but what all the editorial boards need to think about is this: Freedom of the press is protected by the 1st amendment in the US Constitution. Trump has been doing what all other world dictators do - control the press. He lets you in, he kicks you out, etc. The amendment was added to insure our liberty as Americans in a free society. Do your job. We could elect someone who wants to restrict our liberties (Trump). Horrifying!

The word 'antichrist' comes to mind. Has anyone checked for a Nostradamas prediction for this election? Do it now before it is too late.
2observe2b (VA)
If it hadn't been for the Clinton campaign, there would be no birther controversy. As The Washington Post and others have pointed out, it was HRC backers in 2008 that started it. No wonder HRC would like to put the blame on Trump.
qed (Manila)
How come nobody is bringing up Ted Cruz in this context?

There is no doubt about where he was born and yet for a while it looked like he could be the Republican candidate.
Robert H Cowen (Fresh Meadows)
Trump wins the election for "Liar-in-Chief."
Lee Harrison (Albany)
This is truly a new low in American politics.
Kevin (North Texas)
Donald J. Trump is a con man (I do not believe he is a con artist, more like a con hack). Being a practiced liar is part of the con game. Getting people to believe in big lie is part of the con game. Even what he did on Friday is part of the con game. Now he is lying and saying Hillary started it.

When are you news reporters going to wake up and smell the roses. The Don is conning you all. Bend over news reporters it will make it easier for what Don wants out of you.
Lee Harrison (Albany)
Perhaps the only interesting question about Trump finally admitting that the whole Birther story was a hoax is "why now?"

Who prodded him to do this? Kellyanne? One or more of his kids? Bannon?

And what's the point? Did they think this would bring him black votes? I don't think there are very many black people out there that stupid.

Did they think it would bring him suburban mom votes? (probably his worst demographic after blacks) Same probability.

The strange thing here is that there's no real upside to this for Trump, after lying about it so long ... at least no upside that will work within two months.

Can anybody imagine the trail of admissions Trump would need to make to get to the point where he could be seen as a rational politician?
Pvbeachbum (Fl)
The real liar in this campaign is Hillary Clinton.

In the spirit of The Republican candidate's campaigning style, I just call him "Don the Con."
Pat Summers (Lawrenceville, NJ)
"Mountebank" -- of all the words I've seen to describe Trump, this one is in the running for the lead!
Paul gary (Las Vegas)
Mark Penn, Hillary's campaign manager at the time in 2008 started this whole birther issue. As usual the media is blaming Trump for everything, while ignoring anything remotely negative about Clinton.

Both candidates are pathetic and you have to wonder how lying, lack of integrity and ethics became the norm in our country and worse, that it is accepted by the media.

Glad my life is closer to the end than the beginning.
Bob Laughlin (Denver)
After claiming that our military is not up to the standards that even I know it is, and people serving now must surely know that it is, after claiming that our generals are in rubble; how can this mountebank, this shameless hustler, get any support from anyone who wears or has ever worn the uniform.
This piece, and all like it, need to be placed on the front pages every day until the election. Or until he just explodes from the noxious gas that must crowd his every cell.
The coward that is T rump is incapable of telling a truth. It is not in his nature.

And swamped by this is yet another lie this week: That the pastor who interrupted him in Flint was "nervous" and the crowd supported him. Apparently the lies cancel each out. I am scared.

Nonsense, New York Times! The is just another part of your continuing "inside news" joke with your readers; everyone knows perfectly well that "Donald Trump" is a myth, and the idea that such a bizarre clown could possibly have been nominated - and nominated by the Republican party! - as a presidential candidate is, quite frankly, loony, and I won't believe it! I don't know who the Republicans really did nominate, but I intend to vote for Hillary Clinton myself.
reader (Maryland)
I join the rest congratulating the NYT calling a lie a lie but maybe it's a bit too late? Maybe we are at the point that the media in their usual manner have started taking down what they have built up for some time now but it is too late?

The clown is beginning to have mainstream legitimacy. Hillary has got to understand that fighting him in his own terms i.e. a food fight will change nothing. He can say anything he wants but she can't. Look what happened to little Marco and low energy Jeb! And learn. Is it too late?
Janis (Ridgewood, NJ)
It amazes me that the New York Times has this nonsense on the front page of today's paper. No one cares! So Obama was born in Hawaii. That's too bad because if he was not we could justify his poor performance over the past eight years. It is time for a change; no matter who it is.
Dan (Philly)
A disgusting pig of a man with zero integrity. I have to agree that anyone who would support him is as deplorable as he is.
Mark D (Munich)
This article removes all doubt, that the NYT is biased against Donald Trump. Mr. Trump got proof that Mr. Obama was born in the US and admitted it. Another person would have probably remained tight-lipped about it. Also, when the NYT attacks Trump, it's really attacking all the people who support him. Trump represents his voters. Mrs. Clinton made this very clear when she directly addressed them deplorables. It's bad that the NYT is attacking Trump instead of providing advice to the reader.
David (California)
Why promote lies then? Trump's perceived self-interest.
Why retract lies now? Trump's perceived self-interest.
Why not apologize? Trump's perceived self-interest.
Why promote another lie now? Trump's perceived self-interest.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Is it surprising that a nation whose public image is a tapestry of lies is a gross enabler of liars?
Vicki Taylor (Canada)
When Trump lined up the veterans in front of his new hotel and allowed them inside for a special treat, I thought this was as low as he could go but there was more. He then ridiculed a female reporter , ignored questions from the press he had called to his bogus press conference and refused to let them inside the hotel. Oh yes and closed the conference with an ugly lie about Hillary...of course he did. I feel like I just got a glimpse of life for journalists inside North Korea. The media must learn from this..Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
Jimmy (Greenville, North Carolina)
Hillary did not defeat Obama with the Birther Movement and I doubt it will bring down Trump either.
Ikonoklast (Milwaukee, WI)
While the editorial board continues to label Donald Trump a liar, the news pages are blithely ignoring the huge threat Newsweek's piece on the Trump Organization would pose to our country. Why is that?
just Robert (Colorado)
It is no longer news worthy that Trump is a liar In this case Trump only needed to mention Hillary's name and his base believes him and ignores his complicity in spreading a lie about President Obama. After all it is this base that has carried the lie and they would do anything to convince themselves that they were not lying as well as their leader. So Hillary becomes their scape goat and the truth once again be darned.
peggysmom (New York)
I blame the press for making Donald Trump by publicizing his every word
Terry (Omaha)
My question to the DNC & America is: Why on earth haven't we publicly confronted this morally deprived individual with the fact that he has absolutely no qualms with looking you & I straight in the eye and spout an unadulterated lie? A lie that is so aggregates, so documented to the contrary there is no sane grounds for acceptance and he expects us to accept it! You mean to tell me that his supporters think so little of themselves, that they have so little self esteem, that this kind of behavior is perfectly acceptable to them. They continue their support and expect the rest of us to accept the same mentality for ourselves?
I think Hillary may be way short on her assessment percentages.
Dadof2 (New Jersey)
Back when the primaries started and it looked like the GOP WAS going to nominate the worst qualified and worst possible candidate of any party since, oh, George McClellan in 1864 or maybe Aaron Burr, it also became clear that the GOP and Trump were going to run the dirtiest and most disgusting campaign the US has ever seen.
But it's been even worse. The continue stream of garbage and lies that come out of Trump's mouth defy belief. Not just the lies themselves, but that he dares to say them.
But the worst is that now 45% of the American electorate is willing to vote for a blatant sociopath who values nothing and nobody. He has no morals, yet attacks others' morals. He has no honesty--he's the biggest crook EVER to run for office--yet attacks others' honesty.
Imagine: Donald Trump is SO terrifying that even a Ted Cruz or a Mike Huckabee (or Mike Pence) would be a relief in comparison.

Like all sociopaths, Donald Trump assumes he's totally smarter than everyone else in the world, that no matter what he can manipulate anyone and everyone to do his bidding, and we'll all buy his fake emotions and whatever lie he tosses out, no matter how outlandish, that we'll all think he gives a damn about anyone but himself. But the worst part is, he may be right, at least about enough Americans to fulfill the greatest scam ever: For as President, grabbing power to himself as Putin, Kim, Saddam, and Erdogan have done, he WILL be the most powerful dictator in the history of the world.
Sherr29 (New Jersey)
Trump played the media like a violin yesterday for free publicity for another one of his cheesy hotels. " Hey, come on down I'm gonna give you a HUGE story -- but first a word or thirty thousand about my new hotel" -- and at the end -- "oh, yeah, Obama was born in the United States." snicker snicker.

Of course the REAL story would involve the Times contacting the contractors who worked building the hotel and finding out how many of them have yet to be paid and in a few months they could do a follow up when the contractors are in court suing him and he's offering them pennies on the dollar for their work.

I was at an event last week where a man who works for the company that built the largest chandelier that hangs in the Trump Taj Mahal -- one of the casinos in Atlantic City that Trump bankrupted multiple times -- and he talked about how the company was never paid for that chandelier and eventually just had to write it off.

That's Trump in a nutshell -- liar, swindler, user of other people.

Donald J. Trump has been walking around completely naked while convincing people he is wearing a three-piece Armani suit.
John LeBaron (MA)
"Facts still matter," yes, but not to Mr. Trump who skulks malevolently across an ugly stage as a walking, talking machine of craven mendacity.

Words cannot begin to express what a vile excuse for humanity Donald Trump is. Adding to his obsessive lying, he hides behind his false accusation that his time-wasting anti-Obama bigotry is all Hillary Clinton's fault. The man's core comportment utterly defies rational belief. Believe me!

Colin Powell has it right; Trump is a national disgrace, the natural by-product of a GOP turned near, if not outright, fascist. Trump is America's "Deplorable-in-Chief." He could not nor should he command the simple respect to be Commander-in-Chief of a rabid hyena pack.

This ignorant bully is deplorable, just deplorable, I'll be honest with you. That, I can tell you.

With his reality TV daily outrages, Trump is sucking all the air out of the election coverage, like he did in the Republican primary. Meanwhile, the media ignores the real issues that affect Americans, which Clinton is addressing. How about some real campaign coverage for a change! Maybe you should turn Trump's question back on him: What have you got to lose?
W. Ogilvie (Out West)
For a decade Obama's publicist advertised him as a Kenyan. Hillary started the rumor in her 2007 campaign. She owes the president an apology.

The big truth, plain and simple: Trump is mentally ill.

We're actually entertaining this serial liar for President.
C. Dawkins (Yankee Lake, NY)
Politics has become more akin to college sports than to a decision process for Governing. Many people view their political affiliation like they view their football affiliation. It is pure emotion, pure frenzy, full and complete inundation into loyalty and identification and community.

In football, logic doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if your QB is a rapist, if the coach is a pedophile, if it causes TBI...it is FUN. All weekend, you cheer, and taunt the other side and suspend logic and ethics and morals...and just express raw emotion that is not otherwise socially acceptable.

In 21st century politics, it doesn't matter if your candidate doesn't have experience, if he is a racist, if he is a serial wife cheater, if he is a serial business mooch, if he is misogynistic, if she has bad judgement, if she is elitist, if he is a pathological liar, if he is morally bankrupt, if she surrounds herself with "yes" women. Because the masses will suspend their own logic, they will suspend reason, they will buy the sweatshirt, wear it, paint their faces, go to the pep rally and wave the pennant for their team.

They don't care about the issues...they just want to have fun and they want their team to WIN...to be the Champion. They want to be winners.

Some people really do choose their college based on football, and some people cast their vote, based on "team spirit".

Living so far away from the USA my major source for US news is The New York Times, and to be honest I'm so over the coverage given to Donald Trump.

The column inches afforded Trump by the NYT (for example) surely exceeds that which the paper gives to any other candidate (or indeed the Presidential election itself) by large measure - if not a multiple.

Mr Trump 'plays' the media - including the NYT - his game plan is simple - the more outrageous his statements the greater the coverage and in his mind that's 'Goal achieved.'

I understand the decision to publish or not to publish his daily farrago of missteps, mistakes, misinformation, deceptions, thoughtless and unworkable proposals, displays of terminal ignorance etc., represents an editorial quandry, but if the decision to publish were based on where the candidate stands on policy - there would be little to write about.

'Trump fails to fund border wall. Blames Mexico.'

Should Trump prevail, is it unreasonable to think that in response to say Russian or North Korean or terrorist threats - this man would affectionately pat the 'nuclear football' as a solution to rogue actions by rogue states?

'Russia annexes Ukraine. Trump pats nuclear black football.'

It's a case for 'less is more'

Donald Trump is a danger to all...which I guess shapes the NYT's publishing guidelines. He is no joke but should be treated as one.

Trumps idiotic remark that his stance stopped the 'birther' movement, is straight out of the line of thinking of his sheep, that the presidents blackness is the cause of his 'divisiveness!
KayJohnson (Colorado)
Trump is who Orwell warned us about.

Up is down, a pathological, unrepentant liar is championed by religious people who want the 10 Commandments parked in courthouses, the guy who told a POW off is surrounding himself with soldiers.

At least the American flags had enough sense to crash to the floor in protest. I am surprised the whole fakery was not destroyed by lightning.
Gods will not be mocked.

There is just one way to stop Donald Trump: Voting.
This is National Voter Registration Month. September 27 is National Voter Registration Day. Everyone who cares about this election needs to confirm that they are registered to vote and that everyone they know is registered to vote, especially college students and people who have moved. Google is a great resource. Google "Voter registration in [name of state]" and you will get the links to use to confirm you are properly registered or to register. Get mad. Get agitated. Then vote!
Hey Joe (Somewhere In The US)
I despair along with most Americans over this election. The problem is that the option to Trump, HRC, is odious in her own right.

I won't vote for Trump, and I can't vote for HRC. Her little pneumonia episode finally did it. I simply can't vote for such a deceiving and blindly ambitious person. Both candidates clearly care only for themselves and their reputations, and not for the citizens they aspire to govern.

I'll likely vote for Johnson. I have the right to cast my vote for the person I believe is most fit to lead our country! from the choices I have. It's easy to eliminate Trump and HRC, neither of which is deserving of my vote.

The last six weeks will be a battle for people who feel as I feel. As it was with Nader and Perot, this race will be decided by who gets hurt the most from these party defections.

If this leads to a Trump victory, so be it. I can't vote for Trump or HRC and have a clear conscience. The voters didn't create this mess. It is the cancer inside both major parties that have pushed us to this point.

"The Wire" Donald Trump, and "Snot". In the first episode of "The Wire" police are investigating the killing of "Snot" in the black ghetto. Detective McNulty asks a sobbing witness what happened.
The witness says they didn't have to kill Snot; he always grabs the dice game money and runs. Detective McNulty says "If he always grabs the money and run, why did you guys let him play?"
The witness gives the detective a puzzled look and responds, "because, this is America".
So I guess we have to let Trump play
Carol (SF bay area, California)
Donald Trump's concept of "truthful, substantive, verifiable evidence" supporting his multitude of lies reminds me of an incident in the 1956 movie, "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame (featuring Anthony Quinn as Quasimodo and Gina Lollobrigida as Esmerelda).

In a pivotal scene, Esmerelda has been arrested and charged with being a witch. At her trial, the prosecuting lawyer calls on a witness, who claims to have seen Esmerelda turn a valuable coin into a dead leaf. A dead leaf is then given to the members of the jury. They each carefully examine it, and they all declare that, "Yes, this is absolutely a dead leaf!" Based on this and other absurd allegations, Esmerelda is condemned to death.

It is very disturbing and frightening that nearly half of the people in our country are so naive, or otherwise disconnected from reality, that when they hear Donald Trump proclaim an endless parade of "dead leaf lies", they hear instead, "the bold statements of a strong, skilled leader", who will "Make America Great Again."
Richard F. Kessler (Sarasota FL)
Anyone who buys into the fictional Trump narrative has already determined that facts to the contrary are dispensable. The Trump is trash trope is being used beyond its expiration date. Those who care will not vote for Trump. Those who do not will.

It is almost too late for Hillary to finally inform voters why they should vote for her instead of why they should vote against Trump. Trump says he will make America great again. Hillary has failed to articulate a competitive message
Optimist (New England)
In Trump's 2011 interview by "The View" on Obama's birth certificate, he was asked why Obama had to show his birth certificate. He replied, "I have to because everybody has to."

So why Trump is the only candidate that refuses to disclose his tax returns in the American presidential election history?
Steve Bolger (New York City)
This tradition only goes back to Richard "I am not a crook!" Nixon, I believe.

Today's events tell me that Trump is one of the sickest human beings on this planet. Yet Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell et. al. refuse to call him out.

I cannot recall having a death-wish on anyone until today. I wish this man and all he represents were gone.
Joe (Lansing)
This editorial is to the point, but to a great extent it is wasted energy. Buddy Cianci once said "If people read the newspapers they wouldn't vote for me. Lucky for me, they don't read the papers." So you are preaching to the choir. If you are interested in incisiveness, you need to put pressure on "mainstream" Republicans (Ryan, McCain, McConnell, et al.) to truly distance themselves and begin their fight for their party now. Does it strike you as mere coincidence that, so far, the only Republican whose e-mail was hacked was Colin Powell's? Someone who may have been timing an endorsement of Clinton for greatest impact?
Reader (New York, NY)
Can Trump just come clean already and admit this whole Presidential campaign was a joke gone wrong so we can move on as a country and he can go back to ripping people off in his real estate business?
Dex (San Francisco)
The media made this a tight race, and did their country an enormous disservice.
2observe2b (VA)
As The Washington Post and others have reported, it was the Clinton Camp in 2008, desperate to beat Obama, our first black president, started the birther controversy. While no one has yet connected it to HRC herself, it was her people. We wouldn't be having this discussion had it not been for people supporting Clinton. What hypocrisy!
Thomas Renner (New York City)
Yes, for the zillionth time we see trump is a liar and windbag who is unfit to be President. Now, why is he getting really close to getting that job? For me that is the 64 thousand dollar question!
Sterling (Brooklyn)
It doesn't matter what Trump says. Birtherism will always live in the all white and mainly Southern GOP because it is a racist party. That's why it nominated a racist like Trump.
Mary (NY)
Considering his insistence in perpetuating a lie, why should the media accept Trump's one-liner; raise the subject and not let him close it with a "period." Why should Trump be held to a different standard, Hillary's email controversy has been in the news no matter what else she says. The media has given Trump the opportunity to throw out lies without being challenged. By the way, how do we know he is being audited--because he says so? Trump should produce the letter saying he is being audited; the govt cannot comment by law. And be careful of your headlines. Yesterday's was only half correct. NYT should be factual and not hyper to attract clicks only.

When?

Approximately 40 years ago the late Msgr. Joseph A. Dunne placed his arm around my friends shoulder and asked him a one word question; “When?”

Expanding the question was that Msgr. Dunne had asked my friend when he was going to do something about his very serious situation. That one word propelled my friend into recovery that has lasted to today.

I have a question for America, “When?”

When will we denounce Trump with our written and verbal truths?

Has the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 been replaced with the Trump Doctrine of 2016?

Here are the salient points of the Trump Doctrine:

Lie, lie, lie
Blame everyone else for everything that only you can fix
Alienate the World
Continue to lie, lie, lie
Juniors reference to the “gas chambers” to instill the worst fears possible
Incite violence, mayhem, murder and lawlessness
Accept and compliment people that endorse murder
Bluff the leaders & countries that he will retaliate with nuclear weapons
Keep the sizzle going for the new line of the Emperor’s New Clothes
Lie, lie, lie

On November 8th, answer this question as you enter the voting booth. “What do I have to loose?”
Mike75 (CT)
Its well documented that Clinton loyalist Sidney Blumenthal actively spread the birther nonsense amongst Democrats back in 2008. Its why Obama prohibited Hillary from hiring him for her staff at the State Department. She's got some birther stain on pantsuit.
redweather (Atlanta)
This is the way the campaign will go from here on out, just in case anyone's wondering. Trump is click-bait heaven as far as the media is concerned. Hillary, in being sane, just can't compete.
Susan (Culver, IN)
Can the WP, the NYT and others please start all of their headlines with "Trump the Liar.." instead of spinning the headlines/stories as another episode of the hellish reality series that is playing on every news outlet? By giving Trump all the free media coverage he wants, they are implicitly supporting his viability as a candidate. It is mind boggling that the press continues to treat him other than the obvious charlatan he is. It feels as though the respected news outlets are taking their lead from The National Enquirer.
smittyjohnson (Maryland)
Birtherism isn't "finished" - it's at work right now. It's most obvious and dangerous impact has been to deny Mr. Obama his constitutional right to nominate and appoint a Supreme Court justice to fill Justice Scalia's seat. The GOP never would have denied a president this right - we know because it never has - if Trump hadn't set the stage for delegitimization of the first black president with his birtherism. The entire GOP leadership is complicit.
John M (Portland ME)
As Paul Krugman just posted on his NYT blog, yesterday's birther debacle (combined with last night's "disarm Hillary's bodyguards" comment) was Trump's "Lie Too Far" that may well turn the presidential race.

The media got absolutely sucker-punched by Trump yesterday. In what was supposed to be a press conference, he bait-and-switched and instead shamelessly plugged his new hotel and then used a bunch of heroic veterans as theatrical props before he issued his one-minute birther "retraction".

One year too late, the news media finally seems to be doing its job now in forcefully calling out Trump's lies and slanders. Let's hope that the media will continue to closely examine Trump's statements and record in the remainder of this way too-long campaign.
dotsie1 (CT)
When a press conference is called and a candidate is to be lauded for telling the truth, to undo a lie he perpetrated, even as he wraps that truth in new lies, we are indeed in moral Purgatory.
Neil (Dallas)
It may seem incomprehensible that Mr. Trump could utter such nonsense for such a long time. But I believe everything makes sense...and to make sense of this nonsense, I can only conclude that, in spite of his persistent focus on himself, Mr. Trump is almost completely without self-awareness...in other words, he doesn't know he's a liar, he doesn't know he's a racist. Self deception is a common defense mechanism but when it gets to Mr. Tumps proportions, it is indicative of a severe personality disorder.

Clinton's own analyst had it right when she was told that Obama's early life did not reflect American values. Malaysia is NOT America, and one cannot comprehend America after being raised there. The evidence is the president's record.

Of course he lies. Always! He is a liar and a cheat and has been throughout his life. But it's worked for him. Why, can't say because I don't understand it. Many of his supporters are Deplorables - they are the racists and bigots who are delighted that he has made that kind of talk acceptable.

The rest, I don't get what they see in him. He's lied to them as well. Could they just be stupid? The Deplorables and the Stupid - Trump might have found a winning combinations.
Jim Waddell (Columbus, OH)
None other than Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal was spreading the birther lie in the 2008 campaign. Of course Clinton herself was careful not to directly make the claim herself.
xx (ny)
Has there ever been anything less patriotic than "birtherism"?

Even George W. Bush, who- it could be easily argued- was the worst president in this country's history, was treated by his opponents with respect and dignity owed to the president.

Donald Trump is a liar and a villain, and he has been shamefully disrespectful of the president, who should be especially admired for his grace in leadership and public service.

We should remember all of the unpatriotic republicans who stand with Donald Trump in disrespecting the president and the country. Paul Ryan's performance at president Obama's most recent State of the Union Address, for example, was a quieter, but still dishonorable display of disrespect to the president and to the country.

Donald trump's recent begrudged acceptance of our esteemed president's legitamacy does nothing to clear him of his ignoble assault on the most valuable institutions of this country; rather, his contemptible performance is yet another reminder of the disgrace that he - with alternately tacit and active support of his party- has cultivated.
Charles (Tecumseh, Michigan)
This is what Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton's campaign manager wrote in a strategy memo on March 19, 2007: "I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and in his values." Then Penn argued that the campaign should target Obama's "lack of American roots."

Why the shock? He's a salesman and bigot. Both types lie to others, but also to themselves. It's easier than looking in the mirror.

A nation of deplorable Dorian Grays.

Trump speaks his mind and his zealot fan-base loves him for it. Even when he backpedals, as he so pathetically did yesterday. They've already been excusing it as being politically expedient. Meanwhile the "deplorables" scream when such actions are taken by any other candidate.

But why do I think the DNC will squander this - yet another in a long list of them - Trumpian flub? Why? Because the Democratic party and all its key players have disappeared (except for a few exceptions; Warren, Sanders) into thin-air. Where are the Democratic party power-players? Why do they leave Hillary out there to swing in the breeze?

Yes, facts do matter. But the DNC, Democrats in general, expect - wishful thinking might be the better phrase - voters to go out and find the hard-core facts on their own, have an epiphany and come running to vote for their candidate/s. And the point is driven home when Hillary gets all wonky, they chide her for it, and don't support her for being so freak'n intelligent..!

The Clinton campaign has to get some sort of campaign mantra going...where every day Hillary or some surrogate gets out there and brings up another Trumpian lie. Maybe make it like a rallying cheer to pump up the crowds.

A "How many lies is it now?" cheer. And rattle them off.

Or flip Trumps own use of the word "liar"(re; Hillary) back onto him.

Come on Democrats get with it and go for the soft-white-underbelly Trump and the feckless GOP and their pundits keep on exposing!
Jen Rob (Washington, DC)
Donald Trump is a national embarrassment who we may very well be calling Mr. president because the media gleefully covered him like a side show for more than a year. There are many reasons he is not fit to be president. Chief among them is his insistence on talking about his testosterone levels and size of his hands. Come on. America. Is this really what we're doing?
J (NYC)
Why are Americans so deferential to the political endorsements and backing of military veterans? They were (in some cases) war heroes, they are not necessarily smart people who should be listened to on anything else. Especially huckster politicians who tell them what they want to hear.

I think that lying buffoon has finally made it socially acceptable to call him a lying buffoon. I've never seen so many headlines contain the words "Trump" and either "lie" or "liar" in the same banner.

I would say Trump is an artist--a performing one. He would do a comic or Cirque du Soleil proud. His timing is brilliant. What looks like a false move or a gaffe turns out in retrospect to be part of a carefully layered act where the element of surprise alternates with show-stopping virtuosity. The world is his instrument, and he plays it according to his own tune. There are no rules except those he improvises. So his tone goes from a boastful shout to almost a whisper in his delivery. Oom-pa-pa, oom-pa-pa! The audience lines up for him around the block. He is a smash hit. No rival is prepared for him. Not in the primaries, not in the general elections. Hillary and her operatives try to turn up the volume, but they lack the touch. All is lost in the chorus of Trump, Trump, Trump. He is a phenomenon rarely seen which even his enemies must recognize. So hats off to you, Mr. Trump!

I fear, we as a nation, are on the precipice of total collapse, about to prove the adage "All good things eventually come to an end."
Janet Arneson (San Tan Valley, AZ)
The prospect that Trump may become president is frightening to me. But the fact that there are millions of U.S. citizens out there who think like he does and dote on his every word is terrifying.
RBR (Redlands, CA)
I totally agree with the calling out of Trump's "Birtherism" and his attempt to blame "the controversy" on Hillary Clinton. Trump is incorrible, no doubt about it.
Sitting in my living room, drinking my coffee this morning, I looked at my wife and said, this man could be the President of the United States and anything he says, no matter how ludicrous, is news and reported as something worthy of consideration.
This man thinks that I mining coal and drilling for oil are important to the economy of the future (climate change is a Chinese promoted hoax); trade wars won't insue when the US walks away from trade deals (US trade negotiators are incompetent); our military is a disaster, but itching for a fight, and should be free to fire on small Iranian boats because their sailors made disparaging gestures. I thought out loud that we need to leave the country if Trump is elected. Than reconsidered, where would one be safe; the world economy would collapse, the U.S. would be at war with the world and the planet would be ultimately uninhabitable.
Oh well, I'm 71 years old, lived a great life, it's up to others to sort this out. For the benefit of our kids and grandkids, please keep pointing out Trump's lies.
allan slipher (port townsend washington)
Its way past time to call this con man out at the top of the mast head. Words and lies are just playthings to a con man, devoid of all meaning and purpose---except playing the sap to get what the con man wants. This con man Trump wants state power and is playing the media and all the rest of us every day to get it. And so far much of the commercial media has just been playing along out of misplaced fairness. Apparently a lot of ordinary people are buying it too, or just don't care or just tune in enough to entertain themselves with the latest episode. Its time to challenge every word, every claim and every action of this con man and relentlessly spotlight every con and failed business deal he has left in his wake over the years.
Kent Jensen (Burley, Idaho)
A couple of days ago, a "Facebook friend" was extolling the virtues of Trump. I responded with a plethora of facts regarding Trump, his character, his business dealings, and more specifically his relationship with Putin. The response this "friend" was "my page my opinion". Another reply to my post stated that Hillary was a liar. Once again I garnered my facts to respond to the "Hillary is a liar" meme by pointing out that PolitiFact has found her to be consistently more truthful, in fact more truthful than Mitt Romney was in 2012, and that Trump has a very high percentage of lies or mostly lies with regard to statements he makes. As I returned to make my post, I found that I had been unfriended. As the Economist stated in a recent article, we have moved into a post truth era, where truth is whatever I say it is. In order to celebrate this brave new world, I declare that tomorrow the Earth will be flat. So dear readers, do not try to dissuade me with your so-called facts, I declare it, and therefore it is my truth, and it deserves the same respect as your facts.
Dan Mabbutt (Utah)
I'm glad that the Times isn't being sucked in to the "false equivalence" that so many other media outlets seem to regard as a requirement.

Trump is simply a new phenomenon that we haven't seen since Aaron Burr was Vice President. And even he didn't lie so outrageously. I grieve for my country when so many are sucked in by his lies.
Bob Wood (Arkansas, USA)
"JMC of Stamford" made an excellent point below. If the Republican Party were truly patriotic and concerned about the future of our country, they would put petty party politics aside and repudiate their candidate. They're already doing everything they can to run away from him and preserve their seats in Congress, but they can't bring themselves to do the right thing for the American people. That's very sad.
Elliot (NYC)
Trump's campaign strategy has become clear, and seems to be working: tell a whopper a day and make the front page. It doesn't matter if the statement is debunked in the headline. What matters is that Trump controls every news cycle and dominates the op-ed page. This feeds his ego, and even worse - and most importantly - it makes him look like a legitimate candidate for the presidency.

Trump is not a legitimate presidential candidate, no matter how much attention he receives from the press as the Republican nominee. He is an insurgent, accidental, upstart, and protest candidate rolled into one, an unqualified and dangerous individual nominated without the support of the responsible and sentient members of a confused and flailing party.

But growing segments of the public take Trump seriously because the news media do.

It is incumbent on the news media to shut down Trump's domination of the news cycle via statements that are no longer newsworthy. That he lies, says something outrageous, or flip-flops - these are no longer news, and therefore, coming from him, the statements themselves are inconsequential. What he thinks about Obama's birth or whether Mexico will pay for a wall - these are fantasies, not news.

Trump's novel campaign requires a reexamination of traditional journalism - or maybe just a return to it. Please, report the serious policy statements (if there are any) on the news page, but relegate the showmanship to the entertainment section if it's covered at all.
ldm (San Francisco, Ca.)
That Trump has any followers at all with these statements, seemingly immature and embarrassing , obvious untruths, is very saddening. It's as if our serious space in public discourse is threatened more and more, degraded into an unreal, cartoon world. The republicans and too many Americans have picked a real doozy this time.

Art Mills (Ashland, Oregon)
Thank you for calling out Trump's big lie and campaign method. It fits well in the broader context of his campaign...

For the second time since his nomination, Donald Trump has hinted at, egged on, the assassination of his opponent, Hillary Clinton. It may or may not be criminal behavior. It is surely un-American behavior. It sounds more like Duerte, the tin horned President of the Phillipines. If the Reupblican Party had an ounce, one ounce of self respect, courage, and American patriotism, they would deligitimize his nomination. They would thoroughly repudiate him and remove him from the process. The Republicans, however, are as bankrupt as one of Trumps casinos. Sick. Pathetic. Neutered...
Jason B (Los Angeles)
Quote: "The standard words for campaign mishaps — “flip-flop,” “retreat,” “walk-back” — simply do not apply to this candidate’s spirals through unreality." That's true; the correct word for Trump's manipulation of reality for his own purpose is this: Gaslighting. From the Urban Dictionary: "A form of intimidation or psychological abuse, sometimes called Ambient Abuse where false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory, perception and quite often, their sanity. The classic example of gaslighting is to switch something around on someone that you know they're sure to notice, but then deny knowing anything about it, and to explain that they "must be imagining things" when they challenge these changes.
A more psychological definition of gaslighting is "an increasing frequency of systematically withholding factual information from, and/or providing false information to, the victim - having the gradual effect of making them anxious, confused, and less able to trust their own memory and perception."

I think the NY times and its writers need to go recheck some of the accusations the Clinton campaign held against Obama when she was running against him. I agree that the man spins it in a very creative entertaining way and so what else is new but the continued "half stories" that we are getting from a reputable newspaper is what should be most disconcerting. Trump is Trump. The NY times should be the one we can believe and is supposed to be held up to a higher standard. The fact that we readers can no longer be confident about that is more worrisome than all of Trump's ....aside.
Alison (Eugene, OR)
Trump "delegitimized his own candidacy" the first time he opened his mouth.

Something else caught my eye in this editorial, namely this: "...Mr. Trump maintained with a straight face, speaking in Washington to a crowd of friendly military veterans."
Why is it that far too many in our military can support this clown? Why are they overwhelmingly voting Republican regardless of the merits of the candidate? Why?
EinT (Tampa)
They are voting based on the candidate's merits.
WestSider (NYC)
"Why is it that far too many in our military can support this clown?"

Because they were sent to war by the establishment who turned their backs on them. They (google Graham's comments) think $38 Billion is too little to send to a foreign country but have no money to care for wounded veterans. That's why.
MJL (CT)
Too little too late NYT. It's nice you've finally decided to call a lie just that, but where were you for the last 12 months on the other dozens and dozens of Trump lies? Oh right, busy bashing Hillary Clinton about her email "scandal" on a daily basis.

This country no longer has a functioning press, just greedy corporate purveyors of nonsense and innuendo to generate more ad revenue. I'm better off getting my news from Us Magazine.
EinT (Tampa)
Did Trump ever say that Obama was not born here?

Or did he question the validity of his birth certificate?

There is a big difference. One is a lie, the other is merely a question.

It's time for the Speaker of the House, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan, to man up. When will you rebuke the lies of Donald Trump? It takes courage to call out a bully, Speaker Ryan, and you've got a pretty good bully pulpit.

Dishonest Donald at his best---and his supporters know he is lying! This guy has the biggest set of well, in spite of little hands. America can do better--do we really want a President that openly is racists, admires a communist dictator, bilks people out of an education with his phony university. This list is too long to mention. Wake UP American. He will destroy our country and is doing a great job of it now. The GOP is now the Grand Old Pariahs. Vote them all out.
Steve C (Bowie, MD)
Good column! Well deserved bash of the Liar. But who hears? Whose votes will this column change?

We need more but who will listen?
Jennifer Stewart (NY)
When I saw Trump was about to "make a major announcement" my heart stopped. Was he going to drop out? As he opened his mouth I switched off. Later I heard the lies. The most remarkable thing for me was how all the good people rose up en masse to express outrage, especially CBC PAC members who immediately held a news conference.

Rep G.K. Butterfield (D-NC): "Donald Trump is a disgusting fraud… by any definition."

Rep Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY): Trump is "a two-bit racial arsonist [who has] fanned the flames of bigotry" for years. "Don't walk to the polls. Don't jog to the polls," he said. "Run to the polls to make sure this hater is not elected as the next president of the United States of America."

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX): Trump would be disqualified from the race if "debasing, misrepresenting and lying were a crime."

Rep Gwen Moore (D-WI): "This is a dog whistle to all other Americans who are not African-Americans to say, 'See, you're all right. Don't worry about hiring that black woman or that black man because, after all, the most iconic African-American in history is, indeed, not worthy of the American dream.' Be clear, this is not just about degrading the reputation of Barack Obama. It's about degrading the American dream for all African-Americans."

Out of the mud grows a lotus flower. Trump, staff, and supporters are a particularly abhorrent kind of toxic mud. But the lotus flower is a sight to behold; it's the true spirit of America.

Trump uses a barrage of Lies like the military uses a cloud of CHAFF to confuse radar...

From now on I think everyone should regard everything that comes out of Trump’s mouth as Chaff.

His lying is a TACTIC... he is not lying for the sake of lying but to keep you from knowing the truth... his lying IS Chaff!

In short it does not matter one little bit that he is lying. He is using lies to get attention. He is using lies like chaff to confuse and disorient his audience. In short he is very much like Putin who's principal tool is disinformation.
Tombo (New York State)
"BREAKING NEWS...TRUMP TO MAKE ANNOUNCEMENT-SPPECH-STATEMENT BLAH BLAH BLAH..."

And then Trump spews his lies, hatred, stupidity and substance free "policy positions" and his minions go on television and repeat them and the press uncritically..."has to leave it there".

How often have you seen that treatment of Trump's bile as reporting? The media, especially the television media, have a lot to answer for regarding their kid gloves treatment of Trump.
jacobi (Nevada)
The birth certificate issue has nothing to do with bigotry or racism, and is really just a diversion from the democrat's fatally flawed candidate. Only you "progressives" care, no one else does.

To get a better understanding of Hillary try understanding one of her first debacles - travelgate where she fired 7 federal government employees because she wanted to replace them with her own cronies. She subsequently presented a series of inconsistent lies. Go here for a good presentation of the country's introduction to Her Majesty:

The Founding Fathers didn't just throw any
old words or phrase willy nilly into the
Constitution. If the words "natural born
citizen of the U.S." were there, they were
Meant to be there, and they Meant them.
After all, Succession, who was or was not a
Legitimate heir and contender to the throne,
was one of the central issues of the day.
Who was and was Not a Legitimate Citizen was
then, and remains, one of the central issues
of the day. Has anyone seen any proof of
Obama's birth: for that matter, has Anyone
seen any proof of Clinton's or Trump's birth
to a genuine citizen of the U.S.?

Because travel was So arduous when the U.S.
Constitution was written, the fact that a
child was There, in the U.S., at all,
was proof enough of a child having been
Born, there. The capability for a woman to
jet off to some foreign land and plop down
a few thousand, in some cases a few hundred
dollars, and abscond with some foreign
woman's newborn in a matter of hours, simply
did not exist. Otherwise, the Founding Father's
would have required more proof of natural
birth and citizenship.

This is not a question of race, this is a
question of Birth. Were their biological
father or mother legitimate citizens of the
U.S. at the moment of their birth? Since the
Founding Fathers wanted to know, so should
we.

Just because Trump is so mealy mouthed
on the issue, squirming from one position
to another just to weasel his way into the
White House, don't mean we should be.
Ian_M (Syracuse)
The reason that Trump makes these comments is to suck the oxygen out of the room. He says something outrageous, the news media trip over themselves covering it, and then no one has the time or opportunity to show that Trump really has zero substance on policies that affect Americans.

Clinton, who does have serious policy proposals, gets sucked into the vacuum because she has to respond to his idiotic, racist, xenophobic, misogynistic and distracting commentary.

The media is complicit in this rick rolling. Matt Lauers disgraceful performance is the most notable example but all the coverage of this past year has been the same.

Aside from wanting power, using the White House as a new stream of income, getting payback against rivals and paying favors to allies, Trump really has no reason to run for president. He certainly has no interest in doing the work of the president which involves understanding different policies, military strategy, international diplomacy, and demographic groups. If he were actually held to account for the deception by the media we'd know all of this, but the media is so caught up in clicks and page views that it can't be bothered to cover him honestly.
Scott (Tulsa, OK)
The legitimate mainstream press needs to just stop covering Trump. I don't care that he is the candidate of a major political party. Do it just for a week or so. Leave the coverage to the wing nuts like Drudge and Breitbart. That will leave Trump cowering like the pathetic spectacle we saw earlier this week when he was left whimpering by the pastor of the Flint, Michigan, church who stood up to the bully. Like all bullies, he backed down in an instant, probably wetting his pants at the same time. Even in defeat, this obnoxious man will haunt us all during the Clinton Administration. Every time he opens his mouth, lies spill out. He doesn't deserve our attention.
malfeasance (New York)
The problem with dealing with a bottom-feeder like Trump is to go even lower. His success as a human and a candidate depends on no one willing to be as false and dirty as he is. If that was done, he'd be forced to stick to the issues eventually. And his big head would finally explode. Or implode.
Casey Burns (Out west sitting on a subduction zone)
These are dangerous times. The methods of manufactured controversies used by the tobacco industry on the question of tobacco and cancer, followed by the same tactic used by the energy industries to question Global Warming are now major tools in the the political discussion. The Press unfortunately has enabled this by giving equal weight and coverage to both sides. In many cases they have given more weight to the side that manufacture these controversies. They still do. Trump is the end result of this process and its a reflection of the Media's failure - including that of the New York Times.
ecco (conncecticut)
if memory serves, at no time since he began his political career, has trump (liar, lair) lied under oath (pants suit on fire).
Jhc (Wynnewood, pa)
It's time for all those Republicans who oppose Trump to stand up and say they are voting for Hillary Clinton because the prospect of Donald Trump as president of the United States is unthinkable. It's also time for Gary Johnson and Jill Stein to back away--neither will win the election, and the former may well siphon off enough to votes to make it possible for Trump to become President. No one who has watched this campaign can be under any illusions of how dangerously unstable Donald Trump is or how badly he would mismanage our Nation. In our history, no serious candidate for the presidency has ever been so woefully unfit for the office as this maniac.
tgarof (Los Angeles)
From the deplorable basket of disqualifiers available to derail Trump’s bid for the presidency, we may have a winner: Birthergate, a 21st century Rosemary’s baby nursed by its progenitor for five years, reluctantly abandoned yesterday, and offered up for adoption by die-hard conspiracy theorists after he refused to admit the results of the paternity test.
Richard Brody (Mercer Island, WA)
If Trum won't apologize then neither will I for saying this man is totally unfit to become President of the United States. When I was growing up we always, in spite of perhaps not agreeing with the President's politics or personage respected the office and the man. When I was growing up bullies would always continue to ply their ways through life with bluster, meanness, lies and any means to "win". Our society, our world, we as individuals and as mankind cannot afford to have this man in any position let alone the Presidency. It's up to each of us, and the media if it has the fortitude, to deny Trump's quest for this office. I do know that his ascendancy is due to frustration but it's also due to people choosing him out of hatred for Hillary Clinton. I agree. She's not close to perfect. But she's capable. She's prepared. It's her time and despite people's fears of her being in office they should be terrified of the prospect of Donald Trump as President of the United States. Just say NO to this bully. Just say NO to his bluster. Just say ENOUGH to his lies and innuendos.
BCasero (Baltimore)
There appears to be little hope for our country; if even one person thinks that Donald Trump is qualified to be President of the United States then our whole system has failed miserably. There is simply no excuse that such a despicable character could be nominated by a major party for the highest office in the land.
Robert (New York City)
It appears Donald Trump has mistaken our presidential election for a non-reality vulgar TV show based in North Korea, with himself playing the part of the North Korean president. Will the assassinations of other politicians, directed by the Supreme Leader of the USA, turn into a reality if Donald Trump wins the election? He has already called for the jailing of Hillary Clinton. Who's next?
EinT (Tampa)
Anyone who the state can prove committed a crime which warrants incarceration. That's who's next.
Mary Cattermole (San Gregorio, CA)
The statement that Clinton started the birther issue is so blatantly false that it suggests Trump is not in touch with reality. This is more than lying. The man is suffering from a mental illness. The media need to make this point clear to Americans. Trump is sick.
EinT (Tampa)
He should have been more specific. It wasn't Hillary, it was a member of her campaign. Guy by the name of Mark Penn.
Sally (Greenwich Village, Ny.)
The birther thing was always kind of a joke and a very minor sideline issue, that evoked a bunch of emotions. It doesn't deserve attention.
However, why don't you look into Hillary's continuous lies? Like I am a person for the people and not owned by global special interests that work again the welfare of the average middle class American? Or the big lie from the Democrat party, "We didn't rig the Primary". Those are lies that will continue to affect us into the future, the birther thing is simply the past.
Gary (Seattle)
Trump is a liar, but in his case the term is much too general. People generally lie for all kinds of reasons, or no reasons at all. But I think that most of Trumps lies are for one purpose: to commit fraud of the financial, political; but mostly personal gain kind. And with our political system now steeped in miss-information, just a half step away from lying, it was inevitable that a creature like Trump happen. The real question is will he be a standard bearer?
Sam Knoody (Cross River NY)
Trump's "birther" campaign did enormous damage to the United States, inflaming hatred and fraying our social cohesion. In working to de-legitimize our duly elected President, he made governing the United States more difficult and our polity meaner. This one item by itself should disqualify Trump from the Presidency.
Roger Duronio (New Jersey)
Nature and history gave us flim-flam flip-flop Donald Trump and he gave us the 'birther movement' and the republicans rewarded him by giving him their Nomination. Obama was to be overcome, his successor was to be defeated, the power to spread the gospel of bigotry, hate, descension would support the Superiority of the Republican philosophy, of Trump's philosophy, that the emigrant Latino's, the Blacks, Moslems, all foreigners, even women, were inferior, unworthy of sharing any power, unworthy of any respect, simply unworthy, like the 'unclean' of the old Hindu caste system. Apartheid for America, brought to you by flim-flam flip-flop Donald Trump and the Republican party that didn't, and doesn't, oppose him. When the good people don't raise up in opposition tyranny will prevail. Vote for a future of continued recovery from the Republican mess the republican Bush administration gave us. Vote for a future of rewarded hard work and where our progeny can carry on making a more perfect nation. Don't vote for the lost and disgruntled whiners who believe themselves to be 'The Real Americans'. We have always repudiated would be Kings, would be saviors, would be 'special people'. When Jefferson said "All men are created equal" he was also saying no one is created special.
Michael Morgan (Wilmington, DE)
As a number of observers have asserted, we appear to have entered “post-truth” territory. We are wandering in a political Twilight Zone in which a poorly educated, out-of-work coal miner in West Virginia believes that a pampered, undisciplined prep school New York billionaire has emerged from the mist to restore his life. After all, the fact that Obama was born in the United States is irrelevant if I choose to believe that he wasn’t. As Emile Zola is popularly quoted: “If you shut up truth and bury it under the ground, it will but grow, and gather to itself such explosive power that the day it bursts through it will blow up everything in its way.” And that’s what we all should be very afraid of.
Yvonne Anderson (Kingston Ontario Canada)
I live in a border city, about 35 minutes from upper New York State. I love NY and I love the experiences I have had travelling in the U.S.A. So I have been following the presidential campaign with trepidation. My friends and I talk about it in the pub, in the workplace, and at home. Most Canadians shake their heads in despair. What is going on in America? We liken it to cartoon America and it saddens us greatly.
I have read much about the lies of Trump, the thin line he walks with criminal activity and I hope that law enforcement somewhere is building a case against him. Whether the model agency, the donation from the AG in Florida, and the allegations on the internet of involvement with under age girls, surely someone is going to charge him with something?? And quite frankly from my perspective, most of the GOP and Trump should be charged with treason because their behaviour, their slander, their outright undermining of President Obama and the government process is beyond comprehension. Couldn't the case be made for sedition? Forgive my ignorance if I am way out in left field here.
How can anyone honestly think that Trump has the country's or Joe or Mary voters best interest at heart? It's about power, money, free advertising for his businesses and nothing else.
west-of-the-river (Massachusetts)
I believe that a corner has been turned, a landmark reached, by the combination of Trump's statements about the birther issue and disarming Clinton's security detail.

Yesterday's vile assertions warrant more than an editorial but I don't know what that would be.
Walkman (LA County)
Trump is just the classic school yard bully of the type I had to deal with throughout my childhood. They deliberately make stuff up and 'pass it around '.
Dennis (New York)
Dear Walkman:
I wholeheartedly agree, yet am left flabbergasted by reliable polls show the race tightened. After a recent vacation to Europe, and a trip last week to Montreal to visit some friends, they are beside themselves with worries about Trump. They asked my wife and I incredulously, "Do you think Trump can win?" and we have assured them that, no, in the end most Americans will act with good common sense. But of late we ourselves are wondering: How can this race be even close?

Been a long time since seeing the term "mountebank" used in an editorial. So I looked it up in my aging Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary and saw that the term meant, among other things, that Trump was: "A person who sells quack medicines from a platform," "A boastful unscrupulous pretender," and "A CHARLATAN" (caps by Webster). I think that you hit the nail right on the head.
Observing (California)
Trump flip flops again. Talking out of both sides of his mouth again. He lies almost every time he speaks, is vindictive, is vicious, is thin skinned, has a fragile ego, and is dangerous. This is a man you cannot trust with the nuclear codes.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Trump is a bad case of emotional repression. That thin skin and fragile ego come from repression of his sense of shame.
Dana Charbonneau (West Waren MA)
It takes a lot of chutzpah to admit one truth while telling a new lie.
Carter Nicholas (Charlottesville)
"Maybe, but he means well."
Wind Surfer (Florida)
The reason why Trump praises Putin because he sees himself in Putin. In reality, Trump is praising himself. Why? Think about Putin. He denies his actions and instead blames opponents or others, he attacks viciously people that criticize him, he plays with weaker opponents like a cat, he boasts his masculinity, particularly his body or look, he abuses his power for his own gain, he knows how to take advantage of frustrated people for his own advantage. Everything Putin does, Trump sees similarity to what he does. Therefore he praises Putin and abuses President Obama or Mrs. Clinton.
John Quinn (Virginia Beach, VA)
No one voting for Trump or considering voting for Trump will be deterred from voting for Trump because of this editorial or any other article in the NY Times. If there is an echo chamber on the right, there is also one on the left, with the NY Times in the middle of the chamber. That is the way it is.
Robert (Out West)
The thing is, THIS echo chamber tends to echo reality, and to echo arguments that often make a lick of sense.
Melinda (Just off Main Street)
Mr. Trump is a huckster and the fact that he, with all of his flaws and erratic behavior, is seen as the 'lesser of two evils' in this race by so many Americans speaks volumes about what an utterly ABYSMAL candidate Hillary Clinton is.

Pointing out that Donald J. Trump uses theatrics and is less than truthful on a regular basis is hardly news.

This is yet another red herring by the Times to divert the voters from the obvious fact that Hillary Clinton is the biggest LIAR of all. Worse, she's intellectually dishonest, entitled, paranoid, secretive and past her prime. She's unfit to be the first woman President.

I will sit this one out rather than vote for her. She would be worse than Trump (and God knows, that is saying a lot).

I avoid even broaching the subject of this Presidential election with my European friends because its humiliating to acknowledge what a complete farce American elections have become.

A pox on both the Republican & Democratic parties and their corrupt politics.
Aaron (Ladera Ranch, CA)
All this fuss over Trump? Talk about a self inflicted wound. Bernie had a +30 point lead over Trump- and that was before Trump insulted a gold star mom. This is what happens when you count your chickens before they've hatched.

Why can't NYT do investigation on Trump's taxes, Trump university debacle, his casino insolvencies and denying full payments to the contractors, Ms. Melania Trump's entrance into USA, AND, Trump's $500million debt to which he has personal liabilty. All he needs to do, is to get in Oval office to care of his personal debts. To qoute Bloomberg " I know a conman when I see one"

For Trump, it's all about dominating each news cycle. He craves fame more than praise. He values money above people because his fame is based, in large part, on his imaginary fortune. (His actual fortune would be plenty for most people.)

And, this is how he reached this point in the election process, by manipulating the media into covering him and giving him what money could not -- enormous publicity. Stop it already!!!

Trump took the media for a ride. CNN was on the air waiting and waiting for his 30 second declaration and aired a free commercial for trump's new hotel. When will you hold him to the same standard as Clinton? When will you hammer him about the lies? When will you hammer him about not releasing his taxes and credible health information? I feel like I am being held hostage to the charming yet dangerous class clown who sucks up all the teacher's time and contributes absolutely nothing of substance. I can't handle four years of this.

If the collective GOP had even a pinch of real patriotism and Constitutional belief they have repudiate this monster Trump that the maneuvering made possible.

People can challenge Hillary Clinton on policy, but this endless series of lies and lighting fires among extremist groups is and always been wrong.

I don't mean to suggest that Mr. Trump is Hitler. But countries sometimes have choices that would gamble everything on ONE MAN..

Trump is the man who would unravel all that we've built generation after generation.

If that man manipulated the political system in Germany so that he was able to claimed legitimacy when he took power as spineless German politicalost sight of reality. They believed "We can control him."

Our political system is different and Trump is NOT Hitler.

But the GOP leadership is falling for the same notion. The party mechanism is meant to elect people. Fine. But they've brought us to the abyss in this instance and we can see it.
I'm not talking about Hillary Clinton or who any one else is pushing.

THIS MAN TRUMP IS A CATASTROPHE IN THE MAKING.

I'm not assigning blame on all Republicans. But they, in the House and Senate and all across this country rational Republicans have to decide whether national suicide is a good idea.

Maybe we could recover from the wreck and ruin. Maybe not. But political leadership has to decide whether the political party is worth gambling its future on the this manias.

The left is coming unglued because Donald Trump is masterfully deploying Saul Alinsky's tactics against one of their own.

As much as I enjoy the notion that Trumpy's "masterful," I'd sure like to know what seems to be so clever about repeating the same old accusations that get repeated by Rush, Coulter, FOX, Brietbart and the rest of the right-wing media every single day.

Seems pretty easy and mindless, to me.

It dawned on me as I watched snippets of Trump yucking it up with Jimmy Kimmel and other late night talks hosts, that Jimmy and his ilk wouldn't dare yuck it up with David Duke and other American extremists but there they are flossing Trump's hair. My conclusion: Trump knows that whatever demagoguery and bigotry flows out of his mouth or from his twitter account or phone calls to selected media, that it will be lapped up by millions and millions as they watch him being sanitized and pasteurized by influential mainstream American institution as if they too want to jump on Trumps "good side."

Watching Trump beam and preen with Jimmy and the rest, the perception has to be that juggernaut is about to go warp speed.
Dennis (New York)
Dear theWord3:
Kudos to you, sir. To see Fallon gushing over Trump, yes I know he gushes over every guest, was pathetic. Fallon will claim he's just a jester, a clown, an entertainer.

Rightly so, then what are Fallon's producers thinking, allowing this odious racist and misogynist to go on an entertainment show and yucking it up with the likable host, hoping it rubs off of Fallon onto Trump. Why not then David Duke? Why not Putin? Or any of the world's many dictators?

I guess in this world in which we live of people who are famous just for being famous Trump has become the ultimate stooge, the idiot who is not a savant except for being savvy enough to manipulate a media which seems to have taken over our consciousness, taken over our better angels and made everything including the US role in global affairs subject for sensational show biz schlock. Sad indeed.

For most Americans this will have no affect on their vote. The thing is Americans expect "progressive" politicians to call the republican candidate a racist. The race card has been used so often, and so dishonestly it has become meaningless.

I can't fathom how this guy outsmarts everyone, especially the media. The effects, however unethical, are brilliant. The old trope that all advertisement is good as long as they spell the name correctly comes to mind. When someone lays an egg it's often best to ignore them.

The adult criticism of a held Birther belief is that the holder is showing poor judgment, inability to reason carefully, and irrational emotionalism. This set of symptoms is akin to religious faith, which in kind is not susceptible to common dismissal & disparagement.
George (Baiting Hollow)
This whole birther affair shows the true core of Don the Con. He doesn't care if President Obama was born in the USA, he recognized it as a vehicle to position himself as the leader of a vast swath of white voters sucked into the alternative universe of the Alt-Right. He used it to create his base. So what if it delegitimized the first African-American president, hurt the feelings of his children, and squashed the pride of African-Americans. He could care less...it would help him...that's all that mattered. That's all that ever matters to him.
Marcel (Florida)
James Asher is now confirming that Sidney Blumenthal (former aid to Bill Clinton and 2008 Advisor/confidant/friend of Hillary's) first started the birther issue back in 2008. Blumenthal told press in 2008 that Obama was born in Kenya and that he was Muslim. I guess Blumenthal is a racist friend of the Clintons.

Shall we question now whether Mr. Trump is of Swedish or German descent?
His father, Fred Trump and Donald, claimed they were of Swedish descent for years, in order to hide their German heritage from their Jewish tenants in Queens who may have had a problem renting from German/ Americans during and after World War II.

Who exactly is the New Times Editorial Board attempting to appeal or appease for this election cycle?

Most likely Bernie Sanders supporters that are on the cusp of not voting at all or perhaps deciding to vote for Jill Stein or Gary Johnson, since either of the three options detracts from Hillary Clinton's chances of making history, which seems to be the main objective, to make history, rather than improve the nations economy, and social issues.

One matter that seems to not caught to much attention is that of Governor Cuomo's promotion of New York state's business incentive program, which is in line impart with Donald Trump's tax plan to reduce taxes for businesses.
So when a liberal leaning Democrat promotes the reduction of taxes for businesses and spends millions of dollars on a campaign for this program, obviously Governor Cuomo realized reducing taxes for businesses is a viable action to stimulate the state's economy.

So why is Trump's plan not viable? Should he only cut taxes for businesses but not for the average middle class person and household?

We all know the wealthy do not need a reduction in the taxes, since the talents of the tax accountants, wealth managers, etcetera, will always have the means.

As I stated in another comment, the "birther" issue is being bleed to death and is reaching the "deplorable" stage.....

Time to move on and attempt to convince voters of more important issues that impact the poor and middleclass...

"The facts — because facts still matter"

Not to his followers, the GOP rank and file. And the press is his biggest enabler. When this "story" "broke" on the national news last night, it was played like it was a Moon landing. Many minutes of national air time devoted to the buffoon, which is of course the reason he said it.
William Case (Texas)
Donald Trump isn’t accused of starting the birther movement. He never said President Obama was born in Kenya. Trump never said President Obama was born in Kenya. If he had, the news would be full of video clips showing him saying that Obama was born in Kenya. Trump actually said he didn't know where Obama war born, had no way of knowing if the rumors were true, and called for Obama to release his birth certificate. Once Obama responded by releasing his birth certificate, Trump noted that some people doubted its authenticity and said he didn’t know if it was authentic or not. These aren’t lies. The upshot is that today presidential candidates release their birth certificates as a matter of course. The reason for this is most Americans agree with Trump that candidates should demonstrate their eligibility.
Martin (NYC)
Trump did say his investigators went to Hawaii and found things "you wouldn't believe". Then never showed them. There's your lie
Ralphie (CT)
Here's what the progressives are missing. Trump may tell lies or exaggerate -- but it is a testament to how bad a candidate Hilary is that she can't beat him. And probably won't. She could barely put Bernie Sanders away (thanks super delegates) and Bernie is an undistinguished senator who openly advocates socialism.

As for the birther thing -- a fringe issue then and completely irrelevant now as Barrack is finally (and thankfully) getting ready to pack up his bags and head off to make as much $$$ as he can off of his failed presidency.

The birther movement was fringe and had no impact on Obama's misguided administration -- but it wasn't an outrageous question to ask as his father was not a US citizen -- and other candidates have had their citizenship status questioned (including Goldwater, McCain, Romney and Cruz). If the press had done their job in 2008 and vetted Obama instead of drooling on themselves every time they interviewed him (or had tinglings in their legs) then the citizenship question would have been resolved then. Obama should have released his long form birth certificate before 2011. Of course, I realize as do most that even if Obama had been born in Kenya (or anywhere else) he still would have been a citizen. So why did he wait?

Again, another hysterical editorial by the Times doing whatever they can to save Hillary -- good luck on that.
KLD (Iowa)
Well, the liberal news outlet MSNBC reported that Hillary's team started the birther myth when running against Obama.

And journalist James Asher has confirmed it as well.

https://twitter.com/jimasher/status/776612456135262212

So maybe the one owing the apology is not Mr. Trump but the Editorial Board?

Incidentally, many readers would like to see the NYT report fairly on the many extremely negative comments made by Ms. Clinton about President Obama when she was looking to deny him the presidency. It's very strange that she has not been asked about these comments.

Unfortunately, the low information uneducated voters that Trump (at a rally) said that he loved, do not read the New York Times. Editors- you are preaching to the choir. The forty percent that have said they will definitely vote for trump are literally in love with the strongman father figure that he personifies for them. They have too much libidinal involvement to abandon this identification.
The key word is love, not reason for this cohort of voters.

It just doesn't matter to 40% plus of the electorate, per current polls, because what has sustained Trump's ascent is the myth that he is a successful businessman and a bully who will stand up to the rest of the world. Unless and until Clinton can shake those myths, particularly the first, we are at serious of risk of having an unstable, immature, know nothing egomaniac in charge of our country and our future. Clinton ads in this battleground state have almost exclusively been aimed at Trump's moral fitness, and I believe they are missing the mark. Exhibit A: the majority of veterans support Trump, a draft dodger who once remarked avoiding an STD during the 70s was his personal Viet Nam. So it's a lost cause unless inroads are made to demonstrate Trump is not the smashing success his bluster and propaganda makes him out to be. And if all the Johnson supporters don't snap out of it, they are going to be the second coming of the Nader supporters whose legacy is W.

Why was it ever a dispute WHERE Obama was born? Is he not an American citizen by virtue of his mother being an American, just as Ted Cruz's citizen was never questioned for being born in Canada? Why does the media or NYT not talk about this?

On the plus side, Trump finally figured out that the President was indeed born in the USA. On the minus, it took him eight, count' em, EIGHT years to figure it out.

From what I read, there is credible evidence that Mark Penn's memo, when he was serving as one of Hillary's top campaign advisers, articulated a strategy to go after Obama's citizenship. Also, Sid Blumenthal, another high-level Hillary confidante, was "shopping" a story that Obama was born in Kenya. Blumenthal was so insistent in his attempt to get this story traction, he was ultimately banned from holding government office when Obama became POTUS -- leading to Blumenthal's role as "unofficial advisor/friend" to Hillary while she was SecState.

You see, there is some truth to Hillary's campaign having started or at least embracing aspects of the birther issue, but I can see why this does not fit the narrative propagated by the NY Times.
Martha (Steamboat Springs)
No truth at all. The idea to use Obama's diverse background against him as being anti American was floated by Penn and Blumenthal but rejected and never used by Hillary's actual campaign. Nuance. It matters. Not that Trump's supporters know what that is or care, something Trump uses to great advantage.

There is a solution - possibly the only one viable solution - to the problem of the Trump candidacy.

GOP, RNC, and Republican leaders everywhere must condemn the ongoing deceptive, despicable, dangerous, and delirious election process of 2016 being promoted by Trump, his campaign staff, and his close followers.

Party leaders must immediately focus on the 2020 election.
Call it having 20/20 eyesight.

The damage being done by Trump and his entourage to both the GOP and the country at large is immeasurable.
Is the Party able to look down the road? I hope so, even though it is this failing that has put them and us in this current untenable position.

Let us hope that the GOP and its leaders will consider the following:
Do not become an enabler of the Trump dictatorial juggernaut.
Fall on your sword - with grace, sincerity, decency, and dignity.
You will be the better for it ......... and so will we all.

By your patriotic action the Republican Party and the country you save will be your own. Spare us as a country from any further embarrassment in the eyes of the world.
Make this necessary sacrifice NOW and prepare for a worthwhile and reasonable campaign in 2020 with a decent and honorable candidate that we can support with dignity.
I beseech you to follow this course of action immediately ...... as time is obviously of the essence.
Kalidan (NY)
The right, particular the alt right, has found strong cohesion around the notion of Obama's birth (Kenyan), college record (obfuscated and fraudulent), religion (Islam), motivations (destroy America), political leanings (alternatively fascists, Nazi, and socialist), intents (confiscation of all guns and savings for hardworking Americans). Together, they make up 45% of American voters (or about that).

Those in the center and left need to stop moaning and galvanize. How do you take care of a tumor that occupies 45% of your body?

You find the arteries that feed it, and cut them off. What feeds the alt right's foot soldiers are government hand outs (disability, free grazing on federal land, social security, food stamps, farm subsidies, tax breaks, credits, jobs programs called defense). Well? Cut them off and stop with the "on the one hand this and on the other hand that" because that is for losers.

We should focus on building the country (infrastructure and education) where it matters (in the burbs and cities; in democratic states). Alt right survives because republicans have sent goodies to their parasites and criminalized being a democrat. And captured local government. It is a matter of time before science is outlawed, and all of us need to recite the republican sharia.

When we look for easy solutions, we lose. The republicans are winning. The spinelessness of the center left in America remains its most enduring, and despicable trait.

The Trump team- Trump, Bannon, and Roger Ailes are men without an ounce of moral accountability between them. They sure can lie and use lies in an Orwellian manner.
Bannon's project to normalize the candidate of white nationalism by a photo-opping Donald between soldiers with their medals = classic, although the curtain and flags fell over after their sham patriot act was done. Roger Ailes has free time now that he isnt molesting his women employees to give Trump scripts to read to right wing Christians to snare their votes. It helps that Trump's obsession with fraud and being one himself are one and the same.

So where is Melania and her immigration paperwork? Where is Donald's health records and how did he lost 30 pounds on paper so fast? Where are his taxes? What of his callin disabled Veterans "deplorable" selling their wares in front of Trump Tower?

Kellyanne Conway's political calculation to get the birther issue out of the way before the debates seemed like a good idea until Trump stood stone-faced behind the podium, channeled his petulant inner child and delivered an ice-cold, 8-word statement so lacking in sincerity it enraged the African American community throughout America.

The Dems have gone to the well too often with their accusations of racism. In politics timing is everything, so Trump finally acknowledges what he knew along, but the Dems can only gnash their teeth. In the meantime we wait for another coughing fit from Hillary.

I think every column about his lies is another column not written about Clinton. Donald is sucking the air out of the room, and the press is helping him. He is following a principle of celebrities, "There's no such thing as bad press." And, sadly, it's working.

Oh, this is soooo familiar. Allegedly Lincoln said it first: "You can fool All of the people some of the time (what Trump was hoping for, timed for the election), some of the people all of the time (the one's that are supporting him out of anger at professional politician and government employee HRC), and never have to be caught fooling all of the people all of the time...but this time will never come as long as the other current conditions are applicable. (HRC running, DEMs typically unable to run a successful political campaign, GOP desperate to do anything to get into office, etc.)

I am aghast that your campaign coverage has sunk to this new low. Since the venerable New York Times has apparently exhausted itself attempting serious journalism, here's some questions I'd like you to keep asking until you get an actual answer.

"Mr Trump, it is abundantly clear that your insistence that Mexico will pay for a wall is ridiculous and the actual expense and logistics of vanishing millions from the workforce is unworkable and will harm the economy. Is this simply an empty campaign slogan or have you actually thought through all the ramifications?

"Ms Clinton, how do you answer critics that you've captured by Wall Street interest?"

"Mr Trump, it really is necessary for the electorate to see your tax returns and your excuse that they've somehow embargoed is simply untrue. What are you afraid of?"

"Ms Clinton, can you elaborate further why you supported the TPP and then reversed your support?"

"Mr Trump, lowering taxes to guarantee economic growth has failed quite a few times, leaving a burden of massive deficits. What are you suggesting that's different from all the other times it has failed?"

"Ms Clinton, as more and more insurance carriers pull out of Obamacare, are you open to a single payer option?"

I can think of more, but why not try these out instead of catching your hair on fire with petty trolling taunts.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)

Isn't it time to consider the psychological fitness of our candidates in addition to their physical fitness? Mr. Trump's irrational rants and erratic behavior should not make him an eligible candidate, and yet he has hijacked one of our two major parties. His backers include its own leaders who demonstrate themselves to be cowards while they act all indignant against doing the job of governing.
David Warren (Phoenix)
At this point for me, Mr. Trump is beyond disgusting - he's fascinating. I believe I will never again in my life see, in such glorious display, someone with simply no moral core or ethical mooring.
Sarah (Arlington, VA)
To many the most astonishing fact about Trump saying that our twice elected president was indeed legit and born in the US, was that he had to read the few little word 'President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period' from a written note on the dais.

His advisers obvious wrote those few words on a piece of paper, hoping that he wouldn't go off script again and that issue would not come up in the first debate.

Yet, the worst was still to come yesterday evening in Miami when he once more went off the teleprompter, improvised and looked straight at the crowd.

He told his supporters that Hillary Clinton would take all their guns away, and insisted that therefore her Secret Service Detail should disarm as well. And then he gleefully added 'we'll see what happens to her then', accompanied by the loudest cheers of that evening.

As a matter of fact the FBI should pay him a visit because he directly and indirectly threatened the life of his opponent.

First it was ' I can shoot people on Fifth Avenue and would not lose any votes' then he said the 'second amendment people' might do something should Hillary appoint judges to the SCOTUS that would infringe on gun rights, and then after the very last remark about violence against Mrs. Clinton during yesterday's Miami rally, he should be locked in a closed facility for being a danger to others.

And yes, to me the people supporting this violence inciting mentally unstable man are indeed as deplorable as the man himself.
alan (McGovernville)
The election is a referendum and a litmus test. Between those who take the issues seriously and rationally. And those who do not. Between those who believe in facts and science. And those who do not. And sometimes between those who are educated and intelligent. And those who are obstinately ignorant. Remember the words of Congressman Landgrebe, who famously said during the Nixon impeachment proceedings 'My mind is made up. Don't confuse me with the facts'.
VoR (SF, CA)
The death of The New York Times' objectivity and credibility as one of the few admirable outlets of journalism left is sad.

The Time spent basically the entirety of the Democratic primary cheerleading for Hillary Clinton and heaping responsibility for Bernie Sanders' supporters most vile behavior on Sanders himself (remember Krugman's article "Sanders Over the Edge"?). Yet now it pretends that Hillary Clinton bears no responsibility for the birther movement even though it is indisputable FACT that it started amongst her most ardent supporters in the 2008 primary.

By The New York Times' own twisted logic—where a candidate is indirectly responsible for the behavior of his/her supporters—Donald Trump is NOT lying.

Yet this is the third article I've seen from its writers lamenting the lie.

As I said, very sad.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
You have a very serious problem with objectivity. In fact if the press, including NYT has repeatedly let Trump get away with false equivalency. Trump has repeatedly said that Obama was born in Kenya - that is a race baiting statement pure and simple. He has said Trump University could not get a fair hearing before an American born judge because he has Mexican ancestry - that is bigotry. He has said he would ban Muslims from entering the country based solely on their religion- that is a violation of the first amendment. Anyone of those things by itself should disqualify Trump from consideration as President and is great many times worse than using a private e-mail server as Secretary of State (both Rice and Powell, Clinton's immediate predecessors, also used a private e-mail server and nobody has said boo). And I haven't mentioned the fact that he obviously has a serious problem with narcissism, a quality which should be disqualifying for any one seeking a national leadership position; or the fact that he has exhibited poor emotional control to level that should also be disqualifying. The real question is why the press has not pounded home the fact that he is obviously unfit for office on may levels, because if you don't say that you are in fact failing to report the truth.
Larry M (Minnesota)
That's like saying an arsonist is not responsible for the ensuing inferno because he merely poured gasoline on a smoldering cigarette butt that someone left in the ashtray.

Or more to the point, it's like saying Hitler wasn't responsible for the Holocaust, because some low-life in a beer hall spouted off about it first.

But keep making excuses for that amoral, racist con man. After all, the Republican Party is the self-proclaimed "Party of Personal Responsibility". Right?

The denying and alibiing by Trump supporters is sickening.
Martin (NYC)
That's some nice mental gymnastics there. Hillary never embraced or supported the issue. Donald did, and kept pushing it. He claimed his investigators found things "you wouldn't believe". He kept pushing it after the certificate was released. Yet know he claims that he "ended it"?

Also, he didn't blame her supporters for the birther issue, he blamed her. This has nothing to do with either candidate's supporters. It's about the candidates. And he just lied again.
Peter C. (Minnesota)
This Trump fellow lies, snarls, makes unkeepable promises, puffs himself up as the only one who can straighten out our country all in full view of citizens of the USA and the World, and gets a free pass in the process. The Clinton campaign has thus far been unable to mount any kind of offense against this guy, partly due to the continued haranguing of Mrs. Clinton over emails, foundation contributions, Benghazi, and her fitness to carry out the duties of the Office. The responsible people in support of Mrs. Clinton need to get back to the game with fundamental campaigning and worry less about polls and responding to tweets from the greatest Twitterer of our time. Have we completely lost our sanity as a nation?
TSV (NYC)
Last night Channel 13's Mark Shields and David Brooks put forth the idea that we have now entered Orwell's "1984" whereby the truth is no longer the litmus test for a candidate's worthiness.

I agree. And, as such, find this election -- this man -- terrifying for our future. He and his (deplorable!) followers whimsical disregard for what is factually true is unconscionable.

What's next? The moon is made of cheese?

Nice try NYT. Sorry but this is not going to work anymore. The Wall Street chic , the Wall Street puppet is lost . TRUMP has triumphed . Trump showed himself to be a strong and honest wolf in wolf's clothing and called the bluff of the ware-wolf in sheep's clothing who masquerades around with the hope of cheating everyone as she has been doing all the while. She doesn't care for women or their cause she just wants to satisfy her overvaulting ambition of becoming somehow or other the first woman president and then fall into the laps of the wolves of Wall Street letting them all have their way with her and with the nation . Its doesn't work anymore, Trump has triumphed . We The 99 % want Trump as the next POTUS and Trump is our next POTUS . Make n o mistake about it .
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
Than you prefer a candidate who has proved himself to be bigoted narcissist with the emotional control of 8 year old. And if you have actually listened to and thought about what Trump says, than I am sorry to say that your approval reveals a great deal about what kind of person you are.
Lila Rosenblum (West Cornwall, CT)
Why on earth does The Times cover Trump's "Birther Lie" over and over again? It's a Trumped-up distraction from dealing with the real issues, and the media are once again falling into the trap.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
Because - Trump has repeated the statement that Obama was born in Kenya, over and over again for years. It is a race baiting statement designed to make the Obama Presidency illegitimate. Such a statement disqualifies Trump as a candidate for President and especially if repeated over and over. That statement (not mention dozens of other statements) shows that he is unfit to even be considered for office, never mind the fact that he has yet to make a single coherent policy statement.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
Do you think race baiting is a real issue?

Bob Tschirhart (Naperville, Il)
Mr Trump's statements do no merit analysis. He is a master at controlling the news cycle, and baiting the press into putting a microphone in front of him. Mr Trump has no interest in legitimizing anything in his campaign, this is just another tick in his countdown clock where once again his face is above the fold and coverage of legitimate candidates is buried on page 31. The American people know about the drunk uncle that shows up for Thanksgiving an spouts offensive nonsense to grab attention. Mr Trump is that uncle, and it is our duty to call him out as such.
The stakes are too high to lend any credibility to his nonsense through analysis. Please eschew the analysis, call out Mr Trump for what and who he is, and dedicate editorial space to the real issues that face our country.
Fact Or Fiction (U.S.)
Thank you for this article. Trump has told enough lies in this campaign to give the NYT a daily headline untiI the election. I suggest you sift through Politifact and start reporting them.

You posted another article regarding Trump scorning the TV networks. It has been obvious to me all along that freedom of the press is at stake in this election. If Trump takes office you can assume that right, as well as freedom speech, will be severely limited.

The press needs to start thinking less about the short term cash boost that Trump is providing, and think about the long term disaster awaiting them.

I fear for this country. Democracy is the most fragile form of government.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Democracy has never demonstrated "scale independence". It generally endures only locally. Since politics itself is scale independent, political systems that lack scale independence are not viable. No political philosopher of pre-modern times seems to have had a clear concept of scale independence to apply to democratic political institutions, but that was clearly the intent of many when they invented multi-level republican systems of representation.
Deb O (Iowa)
Deny, minimize and blame others, common tactics of abusive personalities. These core personality traits explain why Trump will never apologize, after all, why should he? From Trump's perspective, he didn't start the 'birther' controversy and minimized his role by blaming Hillary. Next, he'll be demanding an apology from the media, Hillary, and, I suspect, even President Obama. There is nothing about Trump that makes him a complex, the only difference between him and other abusive persons is he was handed a national stage in which to spew his abusive perspectives and his billionaire status.

Did you actually read the article, or is this just some knee-jerk reaction that requires little, or no thought??
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
Please give us one example of Hillary Clinton repeatedly telling a lie (Obama was born in Kenya) that was designed to be race baiting. And speaking of dishonest, HC has produced 30 years of tax returns for public scrutiny. Trump has refused to produce a single one.
libdemtex (colorado/texas)
Too much space for trump. All that was needed was one sentence. trump lies again.
cbarber (San Pedro)
I think that the American public has climbed down the rabbit hole and is
now deluding itself on the viability of of Donald Trump as a serious candidate.
When they are forced out after he becomes President, will they say to
themselves "reality what a concept".
Ken (MT Vernon, NH)
Clinton campaign strategists decide to distract attention away from Hillary's disastrous last week by dipping deep into the well. The MSM follows happily along.

Yes, the birther issue. The one started by Hillary's team themselves.

Clearly this is one of the most pressing issues Americans face in their daily lives. Hillary comes off as desperate and Americans won't vote for someone desperate for power.
N. Smith (New York City)
Desperate for power is when you consistently lie about EVERYTHING-- not only to your own countrymen, but to foreign leaders as well (remember that trip to Mexico?).
Desperate for power is when you use hate-filled rhetoric to belittle and insult people, then turn around and ask for their support.
Desperate for power is when you idolize and style yourself after autocrats who are equally desperate for power
Is it starting to sink in yet?
Vickie Hodge (Wisconsin)
The only explanations for Trump's continued support are truly indictments of American voters. 1st. There are those who support him ONLY because of the Supreme Court's importance in this election. Who will get to influence the court for decades to come.
2nd. A very few hope to curry favor and secure a position in his administration.
3rd. There is a significant minority of voters who embrace one or more of the following: white supremacy, ending immigration to anyone not white, isolationism, nationalism, anti-tradeism, sexism, and hetero-sexism.

Trump has also benefited from the crumbling bones of what was once a strong "free press" characterized by integrity, ethical standards, and true investigative reporting! The current "press", which is anything but free, has allowed the Trump's lies to go unchallenged rendering them as defacto truths!
Yesterday, Katie Tur had the courage to identify his lie about Clinton founding the Birther movement and his ending of it. FINALLY!
We can't change the character of those bigoted "deploreables, but we can encourage the press to do their jobs, despite their corporate masters. WE can speak the truth to others, and we can help get out that vote for Hillary Clinton! She is our only hope at this point if our nation is to move forward and prove to the world that we are NOT a hedgmonic power in decline.
Nancy F. Sudik (Bethel, CT)
"Mr. Trump delegitimized his own candidacy instead."
I wish that were true. It looks to me like Trump can say anything he wants and with impunity, too, because no one is challenging him. He has been allowed to attack everyone and everything and he say whatever he wants, true or not. It seems as if the media is controlled by him. Witness what happened yesterday at the new Trump hotel in Washington. He sure got himself a lot of free publicity while making everyone wait for his big "announcement." And all those right wing talk show pundits are doing a great job at legitimizing Trump and deligitimizing Clinton. Will the media continue to allow Trump pull their strings? I hope not, but it is getting late in the game to turn this bus around.
Phyliss Kirk (Glen Ellen,Ca)
Everything that Trump has said about Hillary...liar, crooked, sick, etc. is a projection of himself, plain and simple... he has mocked everyone, every group except misogynists, racists, isolationists, out right crooks, and evil people.

Follow the money and you will see who he really is.
joe taxpayer (Florida)
The story originated with Sid Blumenthal, so technically not Clinton, but come on.
Tom Murray (NYC)
I take issue only with your idea that "Trump delegitimized his own candidacy instead."
A never-ever-legitimate candidacy can't be delegitimized.
(And even were I 'a believer' -- or, better yet, Jesus 'himself,' I wouldn't expect Trump to ever ask forgiveness for the pains he has wrought upon others from his empty-but-for-ego 'soul,' and I wouldn't ask 'The Father' to grant it if he did.)
Johannes de Silentio (Manhattan)
In corporate America there are no "birther" issues.

A CEO undergoes a thorough background check. That check includes birth certificates, college transcripts, tax records, bank statements, legal disclosures, drug tests, military service and physical examinations. And it doesn't end with CEOs - every employee - from the boardroom to the mail room - are required to prove eligibility for employment.

You can't get a job at McDonald's without proving you are legally employable.

To be president there are two requirements. Be over the age of 35 and be a natural citizen. Both are easily proved with a single document - the birth certificate. Not one state requires a candidate to provide this proof. Not one requests college transcripts.

We seem to believe we have a right to see a candidate's tax return and physical exam results. These are submitted on a voluntary basis and it is the norm that a candidate provide them. If they don't the Opinion Pages will be full of outrage - there will be demands for transparency and lot's of bloviating about voter's right to know.

Questioning any candidate's eligibility is perfectly reasonable.

The problem is that candidates aren't held to the same standards as fast food workers.
W.A. Spitzer (Faywood)
"Questioning any candidate's eligibility is perfectly reasonable"....Maybe one time, and the question should have been was Obama born in the U.S., not the statement repeated over and over again - Obama was born in Kenya. There is a huge difference between asking a legitimate question once, and repeating a statement designed to appeal to racism, over and over and over.
Robert (Bruce)
My concern is that for someone running an illegitimate campaign, he's got an awful lot of supporters and good poll numbers less than two months til election day.
Haz (MN)
The problem is not Trump. The problem is that the Republican Party establishment is actively supporting him. On this issue, in this election, it is perfectly reasonable, indeed necessary, to find guilt by association.
Paul Facinelli (Avon, Ohio)
"...facts still matter..." Are you sure?
Rue (Minnesota)
What about the "crooked" Hillary lie, which Trump has repeated daily with no challenge from the media? I have been following elections since 1968 and as disgusting and depressing as some of them have been, none has depressed me more or given me more concern for the country than this one.
Artist (Astoria New York)
We are at the 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0000,,000 lie. Don't think they will stop now.
ChesBay (Maryland)
I think we should turn this "conversation" to the question of whether, or not, Petunia Trump remained in the country, legally, and if Don the Con paid someone to grant her citizenship. I'm only interested because I know we will ALL be PROUD to have a naked centerfold as our new first lady. I know, right?
ChesBay (Maryland)
...OR paid someone to look the other way. That would be a real shock, wouldn't it? No?
joymars (L.A.)
Trump's scheme: by blaming birtherism on Hillary, he is muddying the waters with African Americans who are sitting on the fence. Anything he can do to muddy her waters he will do -- including contradicting his own lies. With another one, of course.
Michael L Hays (Las Cruces, NM)
Suppose we speak unvarnished truth to explain Trump's narcissism, sadism, and contempt for any reality but the fantasy world created by his self-serving, ever-change spin: sociopathy. Trump is sick, and everyone can and should properly call him Sick Donald. It is the kind of phrasing which he can appreciate it when he dishes it out to others; let's see if he can take it. Not likely; bullies are weaklings, and Trump is both. Sick.
C Liu (california)
its a sad reality for our country the United States, the envy of the world and the most prosperous country of the world that a lot of our constituents really believe Mr Trump and are willing to vote for him. Racism is a bad word these days but still prevalent in daily living. Sadly Racism is a major theme of the campaign that has been legitimized by Mr. Trump for those in our country who feel they are entitled to a preferable advantage over others who aren't White . i happen to have the same birth certificate as our president and born in the same hospital and it really troubles me that even in Hawaii so called melting pot of cultures and ethnicities , there are constituents who will vote for him.
JP (California)
I pray that he beats Bill Clintons wife. It will be so much fun watching all the leftist kool aid drinkers go apoplectic.
joymars (L.A.)
Trump continually looks in the mirror and then turns around and accuses Hillary of whatever he sees in himself. It's quite nauseating to watch. But you should try it.
N. Smith (New York City)
Evidently your desperate need for entertainment so strong that it takes priority over the welfare of this country.
Dennis (New York)
Dear JP:
As a New Yorker and lifelong liberal Dem, from JFK to BHO, and generous supporter of Bill and Hillary, I am sorry to disappoint. This leftist who doesn't drink anything so bad for you as Kool-Aid will not go apoplectic, for you or anyone.

I am a liberal though my profession and income should suggest otherwise. Years ago here in NY there were actual Republicans governing, like Nelson Rockefeller, Jacob Javitts, and many more. They were not ideologues or zealots. They gave us the government we wanted. We pay some of the highest taxes for that privilege and are rewarded with large incomes.

NYC embraces socialism, but we also are the financial engine that runs this country, and a center of world commerce. You see, dear naive one, we here embrace both capitalism and socialism, as do most civilized industrial nations. We need both and plenty in-between to take care of almost a third of a billion citizens. We are a global empire whose tentacles surround the globe. We are the most powerful nation in all history. But Republicans, who preach small government, think they can operate this great massive dynamo on a low budget, by lowering taxes for we the wealthy and sticking the burden upon the middle and lower class.

We of the Upper Class benefit enormously, but no one else does. Trump has sold you a bill of goods. He is ill-equipped to run this nation. Mike Bloomberg warned US about Trump. Do you think a real billionaire drinks Kool-Aid? Sugarless Mike?

Jan Heimlich (Austin, Texas)
I am glad that the NYT and some other news organizations are calling Trump out for his oppressive and malevolent tactics. However persistent, we cannot allow this kind of deceit to become normalized. If the shock value goes away, we are all doomed.
Chico (Laconia, NH)
One could make the case that the true test of what is known as "The American Experiment" as to whether it's success or failure, hinges on whether Donald Trump gets elected as President or is repudiated by the American voters.
Patty W (Sammamish Wa)
If you think we suffered under Bush's presidency, a Trump presidency would ensure your children would be fighting wars with everyone and bankrupt our country. He doesn't believe in regulations, corporations would run roughshod over laws for clean water, product safety, food safety...wouldn't be a very safe world for our kids. Trump is a dangerous shyster and it's frightening that people are willing to destroy our country because they don't like Hillary and would seriously vote for this racist. Come on people, he made fun of a handicapped man ... explain that to your children ! Keep him on reality TV and beauty pageants but keep him the HE$$ away from the presidency !
Snarkk (NorCal)
It's about time the NYT, WaPo, and other news organizations start doing their job as the fourth estate. Trump is a consumate liar. Yes, a LIAR. He's good at it, it comes to him as second nature. That's why he gets sued so much. Fraud and lies are the bedrock of how he operates. Yes, time to get real. This guy must be revealed for the consummate liar that he is. Were he president, he'd have a bully pulpit to lie to the American public, and the world on an industrial scale, to the vast detriment of our constitutional republic. NYT, keep calling this snake out on his lies, and question him incessantly on all his claims...
Ghulam (New York)
Hillary Clinton sometimes withholds the truth. Donald Trump is a habitual liar. And yet she pays a heavier price in the polls for being "untrustworthy"!
adongeorge (Atlanta)
Furthermore, Donald Trump manipulated the media yet again to cover this circus which promoted his new hotel as well as hatching another lie - that Hillary Clinton started the birther myth. I have a huge beef with the media for falling for Trump's tactics over and over. Trump promotes himself as a "winner," and by falling for his antics, they make Trump look like a "winner." He successfully outsmarts and vanquishes the stupid liberal media - again and again. He won. They lost. Trump is a "winner" yet again. His followers and the electorate see this, and and the "winner" label sticks. They then begin to think that maybe Donald Trump is much smarter than everyone else. They deduce that maybe he has what it takes to "win" against ISIS, North Korea, Russia, Syria, Wall Street, Big Pharm. It sickens me that the media through their own stupidity has inadvertently aided and abetted Donald Trump propagate one of his main brainwashing slogans - that he is a "winner" when he really is nothing but a con man.
Big Richard (California)
Donald Trump did NOT LIE about Obama's birth. He said that he DID NOT KNOW where Obama was born, but wanted to find out what the truth was. The only lie is the lie being spread by the media about Trump lying. I guess that's true that if you repeat a lie often enough, people believe it.
gc (ohio)
Let's have much more coverage of another fraud: Mr. Trump's $10-$12 TRILLION budget shortfall (vs. Clinton's 1/20 of that).

Maybe if Senior Citizens understand that their Medicare and Social Security are already in dire straits, especially Medicare, they will understand how impossible it will be to provide good care if Mr. Trump begins with a huge tax cut. Ditto the Millenials whose future depends on college affordability and infrastructure. Ditto everyone else who would like safe food and clean air and water.

That is just a terrific illustration accompanying this article. Hats off to Selman Design.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
I don’t believe for a minute that this Birtherism thing is over. I think that, in fact, it is just getting started.

President Obama is everything that Trump wishes he could be and never will be.

He is a self-made man -- which Trump is not -- who is vastly more admired in this country and throughout the world than Trump will ever be.

He is younger than Trump, better looking, much smarter, is far better educated; has a wife who is miles ahead of Melania; never once in his life has been forced to appear in bankruptcy court; is thinner; and has better hair.

Trump knows all of this and deeply resents it.

President Obama makes Mr. Trump feel little and small without even trying. We will be hearing this Birtherism junk from him for the remainder of time.
George Mandanis (San Rafael, CA)
Obama followed the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke: "As part of his command to 'love your enemies', Jesus says 'And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other.'"
Trump denied Obama's citizenship for over five years yet a respected weekly referred to his one-sentence statement as granting Obama citizenship--an awful misstatement. What Trump did is end his lies about Obama's place of birth lacking the guts to apologize to him and to the world.
ed (honolulu)
All of this hysteria and phony self-righteous indignation coming from the Dems must be music to Trump's ears.
CityBumpkin (Earth)
Once again, Trump bets on the gullibility of the average American voter. And why not? It has paid off for him so far.
fastfurious (the new world)
Trying to blame it on Hillary now? Trump has no shame. He's really just worthless.

I had a 'reality check' this afternoon when I watched Michelle Obama give a sensational speech at George Mason University, saying of Trump "when people go low we go high." That's what we'll be missing! The Obamas - such dignity and class. Even the teenage daughters are graceful. We won't see their like in the White House again. Too many people are busy trashing our country....I wish I knew why....
Abby (Tucson)
My public school education advised me when times are hard, the iceholes blame the helpless for the hopelessness in hopes of roping us dopes. Didn't you ever learn scapegoating is the first sign of oppressive design? If you have to repeat a negative three times to have impact, then your hammer is getting Roundheaded.

Go on, Mr. Business Man, you can't dress like me...

Time to demand to see Donald Trump's tax returns .... his own written, official proof of legitimacy.
salvatore (long island)

Does America need a Commander-in-chief or a Liar-in-command? Hillary does lie, as we all do, but in all truth she is qualified to be the Commander-in-Chief. Can we conceive a greater liar than Trump? Trump's slogan ought to be: "Let's Make Lying Great Again"!
joymars (L.A.)
Now I get why he now admits birtherism was a lie!

It's time to hit Hillary as hard as he can in her African American support.

He won't lose his followers at this point no matter what he says. Just read the comments here from them. They'll follow him anywhere. But now is the time to sow seeds of doubt in the demographic he knows he won't win. It's enough for him to weaken it as much as he can. Remember, he's pow-wowing with his Breitbart buddies every day. They are all quite aware of what moves they're making.

Yes, he IS playing the media. And they are all so clueless.
Abby (Tucson)
Did you read Carlos Slim was toying with him, but the production company Larry King and Slim own together, Ora, now refuses to do business with some one so abhorrent to Mexican audiences? So Trump's already blown his post election odds for real!
G Eaton (Austin, TX)
I seem to remember Mr. Trump saying something along the lines of, "If Mr. Obama was not born in this country, then he's pulled off the biggest political con-job of all time.'

No, sir. The biggest political con-job of all time is your winning the Republican nomination for President of the United States. It can only be exceeded by your possibly being elected President, as you sit on top of the largest mountain of lies and frauds this country has ever seen from a candidate for that office.
og (atlanta)
Unwittingly even the NYT goes down into the rabbit hole repeating his slanderous statements, when are you going to take him to task and ask him substancial questions instead of playing his game of smoke and mirrors.
G. Sears (Johnson City, Tenn.)
As the litany of Trump’s outrageous, utterly disingenuous, and dangerous behavior grows by leaps and bounds, his numbers in the various polls rise in concert.

The latest addition to a staggeringly long list: the perfunctory Birther retraction and then a blame shift to HRC for creating the issue in the first place. Add the latest bazaar comment at a rally in Miami about disarming HRC’s Secret Service detail, to “see what happens to her.”

Surreal hardly captures how completely unhinged this self serving, ego maniac has become.

Trump’s compulsive antics will only get horribly worse should he become the President of these United States.

He is massively unfit for the office he seeks, akin to a throng of criminally deranged third world national leaders who have wantonly brought their chaotic nations to the edge of civil destruction across the globe for no purpose than to serve their own perverted interests.

It can happen here.
Mike S (Portland)
This is frightening, I know otherwise rational people who support Trump. With the denial skills of an abused spouse they brush off Trumps continual stream of utter lies and contradictions as not that big of a deal because deep down they know that Trump means well. He'll change. Having a corporate proxy such as Hillary does not provide an viable alternative for people who really want a change.
We live in a new age, and it is certainly not an age of enlightenment. The American conversation is now controlled by a corporate press that has abdicated their role as the forth estate and have chosen instead to help peddle the big lie and the fear of the month. The press along with too many influential estates practice a new form of patriotism, one of greed.
Perhaps this is where history will place us, living in the age of the big rip off and the big lie.
Jimmy (Greenville, North Carolina)
I think Hillary Clinton thought the birther question would cause Barack to drop out back in 2008.

I think she did a deplorable thing in questioning his place of birth.
salvatore (long island)
have proof?
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
She never raised the issue, but she did fire a staffer who did and then immediately apologized to the Obama campaign. You would have to be a full time resident of the state of denial to believe Trump on anything anymore.
Abby (Tucson)
Nice try, Mini-Vlad. The closest she ever came was in questioning his American experience as he'd been around the world more than most candidates. This was sensibly countered by the argument that his experience was more timely for representing US in this world.

She NEVER suggested, as Donald Trump paid people, to question his birth place. But you go on and on and on and on and see if you can resurrect her as the devil Trump. Won't she peel off a lot of his followers if they learn she was Donald's inspiration?
Paul King (USA)
Clinton camp:

Make a claim and stick to it.
Clinton is far more honest, transparent, trustworthy than Trump.

This article in The Guardian is excellent.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/mar/28/hillary-clinton-ho...

An excerpt:
As for her statements on issues, Politifact, a Pulitzer prize-winning fact-checking organization, gives Clinton the best truth-telling record of any of the 2016 presidential candidates. She beats Sanders and Kasich and crushes Cruz and Trump, who has the biggest “pants on fire” rating and has told whoppers about basic economics that are embarrassing for anyone aiming to be president. (He falsely claimed GDP has dropped the last two quarters and claimed the national unemployment rate was as high as 35%).

Lastly, the cure for fretting is getting on HillaryClinton.com and volunteering to make phone calls - as much as you can.

There are far more Hillary supporters out there.
Simply calling them day by day will defeat Trump.
Byron (Denver)
I listened to the sick twisted words of the liar trump. When the audience heard him smear Mrs. Clinton you could hear a pin drop. Not a word or a sound.

I guess even his deluded followers were stunned into silence.

This person has no business running for dogcatcher folks; his lies and trail of lawsuits speaks for itself. It is sad reflection on our people that almost half of us support this criminal. It is an indictment of the entire republican party that they have enabled this sickness with their non-stop lies, show trials of decent public servants and false accusations of good persons.
A. Boyd (Springfield, MO)
2 + 2 = 5 As Orwell pointed out in 1984, if you repeat it enough, almost everyone will not just pretend to believe it, but actually believe it. If Trump repeats his garbage enough, people accept it as fact, even when it contradicts the evidence. The next step is destroying the evidence. In 1984, the Winstons of the world who question this alternate "reality" must suffer until they're put out of their misery. What will happen to American Winstons?
Ed (Dallas, TX)
The other article in the NYT used a key phrase, saying Trump's continuous birther campaign appealed to "those who have no need for facts and whose suspicions can never be allayed." Those same people will vote for Trump. Those are the same people whom the founding fathers feared most when they created the electoral college. There are far more of those same people in our country today than anyone suspected. The electoral college may not protect us from those same people in November. God help us if those same people elect Trump as president.
Gfagan (PA)
What does it say about Americans that this repulsive buffoon is within striking distance of the presidency?
I can assure you, the rest of world is watching. If The Orange Menace makes into the Oval Office America's moral authority -- already ravaged by eight years of the Cheney Administration -- will collapse entirely.
Domestically, we will certainly see the economy reduced to rubble by the wrecking ball of Republican policies, and we may quite possibly lose the Republic as well.
The threat to the planet represented by the buffoon is summed up in his question about our nukes: "We have them, why don't we use them?"
And yet, all this being clear in advance, voters in swing states like Florida and Ohio are gearing up to throw the election to the fool.
Never has American selfishness and immaturity been more glaringly and embarrassingly on display.
Abby (Tucson)
Back in the 1930s, a family of Singers with a number of other industrials plotted to overturn our democracy and install a Super Secretary. These iceholes are still at it, and the EU was their first target. Just waiting in their spider holes for the economy to turn down enough to sell us this Tabu stink, again. Yes, they are colluding with Russian Oligarchs to end socialism in any form.

My SSMom's auntie materially funded the misguided American Liberty League, uniformed fools who stepped all over their own clangers ringing bells for French Corporatism. That's what the Bleu Shirts called their own brand of canned whoopass. Auntie had to run from Hitler's bombers as she and her Polish Ambassador husband got caught favoring the French over his brand of fascism.
Grady Ward (New York City)
We are going through a sea change in the future of this country and the world.

Reputable media has to learn to called a falsehood in the lede and not just trot out the lie upon lie in the story hoping that us trusting americans can sort it all out. We are simply not used to the continuous volume of the lies coming from Trump.

PLEASE help us out by recognizing the number of lies are as much of Trump's story as the underlying statements and put the reportable fact of his overwhelming number of his false statements in the LEDE where it belongs. Not in an unrelated editorial.
Alice Shukalo (Austin, Tex.)
Despite my continued need to remind myself of what "birther" means--does it mean someone who believes that birth happens?--I am trying to incorporate this neologism into my vocabulary. As far as the headline announcing that Trump "still isn't apologetic," well, why bother saying that? Of course he isn't. No one has to be told that he never apologizes, so why say it? Trump is the most consistent presidential aspirant we have had in my lifetime, and that's a fairly long time. He never fails to be uninformed, vicious, hotheaded, conniving, insulting, racist, sexist, disrespectful, mean, deceitful, manipulative, ignorant, and contemptuous. Remember the hell John Kerry went through on the "flip-flopping" accusations? Trump's supporters, who would rake someone like Kerry over a bed of razor blades for retracting a statement, will find no problem in Trump's announcement that he has, thankfully for all of us, decided that Mr. Obama was born in the U.S. (Since that statement comes from Trump, now I, too, am wondering about Mr. Obama's country of birth.) But here's the clincher: it's highly likely that Trump was not born in the United States. We have not seen his birth certificate, and until we do, I am going with my belief that Trump was born on Mars and made it to Earth in a large bubble, where he still resides. He was adopted by Leona Helmsley, who found his bubble rolling around outside The Helmsley Palace in 1950, and the rest is history.
SMB (Savannah)
Once a birther, always a birther. Mr. Trump rose the crest of racism with this lie, and now is close to the presidency himself.

He throws his bigotry bombs, his insults and his lies, and the press goes chasing after them.

What is he hiding in his taxes? Every newspaper in this country should have an editorial demanding this. Every media reporter should begin an interview with this question.

The New York Times is still following Trump's bouncing ball. It needs to do the deep investigative articles, as it already has done on his finances and a few other subjects. Find his taxes, demand his taxes every issue, every week. With thousands of lawsuits and with fraud cases in court, at least some of these tax records are out there.

Every candidate in four decades has released his or her taxes. Russian and Chinese debt, ties with dictators and organized crime, lack of tax payment or cheating on taxes, lack of charity, lack of a fortune. Beyond his bigotry, this is how Trump defines himself and how his followers define him.

You must do your due diligence and demand an accounting. The deep reporting must continue. Forget the false equivalence you have done too much of. Now, follow the money.
OldNYCGirl (Boston, MA)
Remind us again which law states that presidential candidates must release their taxes?
pat (oregon)
All I expect to hear in every report on Trump is that he lied. I am sick of the press normalizing his hate speech. You guys built him up. It's your job to take him down.
patsy47 (bronx)
Glad to see that the august NYT is FINALLY using that wonderful little three-letter word. LIE. A LIE of long standing, apparently disavowed, followed immediately by a mind boggling attempt to distract our attention with yet another LIE. LIES and more LIES, spewing from his foul mouth in stupefying abundance. And it's *Hillary Clinton* who's considered untrustworthy?
Annie Dooley (Georgia)
What a nightmare for America.
Jay (Green Bay)
Anyone with an ounce of brain knows this is simply a wink wink to his racist birther supporters! His supporters know it well! How could any nation in the world respect the judgment of American voters if this man is elected POTUS?
rollie (west village, nyc)
The times is finally starting to tell it like is.
Call out the lies. Remind them of the lies. Rehash the lies. Replay the lies
Don't let them forget the lies. It's your job. Our futures are at stake.
No more false equivelancy. Unambiguous bright light on the facts
You owe it to us all
Brian (Sioux Falls)
And now is Mike Pence going to repudiate this second lie? Or is he going to stay in the background hoping against hope that his personal aspirations for the future won't inevitably conflict with his sticking close to a liar? Shame, Mike, shame.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Pence believes he will experience God's rewards for believing the preposterous after death.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The law of unintended consequences exerts itself quite frequently. Who imagined that the free WiFi hotspots installed around NYC would become hangouts for idlers watching porn?

I don't see how conventional methods of political polling can survive the combination of robocalling and caller ID. Who answers the phone when 9 times out of 10 it will just be someone asking for money?

How does one adjust polling data for this effect?
jacobi (Nevada)
This is simply a made up controversy by the "progressive" media. It has nothing to do with American's daily concerns, just a show. The media demanded an answer from Trump, he gave it, end of story.

All the redundant comments from "progressives" here will make no difference.
Michael Coventry (Washington, D.C.)
This matters enormously. This was a beyond false apology to a racist lie he's been peddling. There's no end of the story and most Americans understand that.
N. Smith (New York City)
@jacobi
The situation and the outcome is actually far more complex than that, and requires more than just pointing a finger and blaming someone else.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
We feel your sense of futility, jacobi.
susan (montclair)
See, it just doesn't matter what this man says or does. He grabs every single headline anyway. All this free publicity! He is a master media manipulator. This short column alone mentioned his name 9 times -- and had his name emblazoned in the headline as well.
Dennis (New York)
The sheer sadistic glee exhibited by the bully Trump seems to know no bounds. This odious excuse for a human being makes this New Yorker and I am quite sure millions of others in this fair city embarrassed and ashamed to have this cretin in our midst.

How millions of Americans can embrace this noxious demagogue is beyond comprehension. Please, no talk about Hillary being worse. She is not worse. Neither is President Obama, or Bernie Sanders, or Jill Stein, or Gary Johnson. Neither was Mitt Romney or John McCain worse than Trump. There has not been, since perhaps Tail Gunner Joe or George C. Wallace, such a divisive character in politics who has cast a pall upon the American electorate as this sleazy snake oil salesman.

Good God, can there be that many people in this country who are so self-destructive, so absolutely paranoid in their belief that Barack Obama is out to destroy America that they actually buy the sheer nonsense that Trump is peddling? Can there really be so many of my fellow Americans who have such disregard for this great country of ours that they are willing to forfeit its prestige around the globe and hand the reins of power over to such a complete idiot?

In less than two months, we shall see. We will be holding our breaths.

@Dennis
Like yourself, I have been consumed with the same questions about how some Americans can hold this country in such low regard, that they are willing to hand it over - lock, stock, and barrel to a person who couldn't be less qualified to run it.
I hope we are all still breathing in two-month's time.
Dennis (New York)
Dear N. Smith:
Thanks for your well-appreciated comments. As an old codger and native New Yorker who loves this wonderful town and this nation, and for whom this country has been very good to, I am of the belief that we who have made it here should realize, especially in my case, we have not done it on our own. It does take a village or the infrastructure of a great nation to help us all along.

It seems that Trump supporters out there in the Hinterlands, no offense intended, haven't a clue as to what a huckster, what a shaman their candidate is. I was very pleased to see someone of Mayor Mike Bloomberg's stature, warn US at the DNC convention to the wily ways of Trump. Bloomberg's a bona fide billionaire, a true self-made man, who didn't have such a bloated ego to reach for the presidency on his first time out. Even Mike knew his limitations.

Not so with Trump. This mentally-challenged candidate knows about as much about politics as he does about business, unless you count cheating people an asset. And yet, it is amazing to see how many Americans are fooled by this foolish fop. So yes we shall see. And with fingers crossed, and baited breath, I am confident of what my beloved President Obama said: We Americans have too much common sense to elect a jerk like Trump.

What does it say about our electorate when this kind of attention is paid to a spoiled brat? Misbehaving narcissists are are a fact of life we mustn't worry over. An growing fraction of the electorate who believe that Trump's campaign represents a solution to anything is something about which we should be terrified.

Why, oh why, do the media continue to dignify such foul conduct by the donald ?
I hate to become a "conspiracy freak", but I begin to suspect that his corrupting conduct is just too big a money-maker at this time for the media monopolists to pull the plug on PROFIT, and to denounce donald for being a fraud, a con man and a DANGER TO AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.
This from wikipedia --
"In 1983, 90% of US media was controlled by fifty companies; today, 90% is controlled by just six companies.[75]"

What gratifies me is that every news story I have read, seen, or heard on this subject has explicitly pointed out the falsehood in Trump's statement that Hillary Clinton and her campaign started the whole birther movement. My hope is that the news media and social media will take this opportunity to engage in real-time fact-checking of BOTH candidates for the remainder of the election cycle. This is especially vital for the debate moderators. No more Matt Lauer-syle passivity when confronted by a bold-faced lie. The media has been letting Trump get away with murder, applying a double standard, grading on a curve - pick your metaphor. All of these organizations have research staffs that can provide nearly instantaneous corrections to any untruths. I sincerely hope that the unanimous repudiation of Trump's ridiculous concoction of Hillary's responsibility for the birther canard is the beginning of a new era in media credibility.
Speen (Fairfield CT)
It is now time for all to recognize that Mr. Trump is a facist. Attemting to dismantle our government. Has any candidate for president ever suggested, TWICE (I am sorry there is not a bold type feature) to shoot his opponent ? Wouldn't one consider this somewhat outside the bounds of Democarcy????
Even as metaphor.. Good god please tell it like it is.. there isnt a moment to waste.
Kimbo (NJ)
Who cares what Trump thinks?
Worse than that is some assumption that he should apologize to anyone for what he thinks.
Isn't he entitled to believe what he wants, no matter how ridiculous? Should Obama apologize for believing that North Korea would give up nukes if he stood by and did nothing? Or apologize to the Syrian people for drawing a red line in the sand and doing nothing when Assad continues to gas his own people? Spare me with the apologies.
Vivian (New York)
Enough is enough. If Trump wins this election, the onus will be squarely on the shoulders of the "news" media who have been walking on eggshells instead of sounding the alarms. From now to Election Day, all media should be bombarding our citizens with ALL the lies and misrepresentations of the Trump campaign. Shame on his enablers, especially the Republican politicians who refuse to disavow him.
Andrew From Boston (Boston)
Vivian,
I wish I could agree. It's on us, regardless what the press does. The press has been cowardly, no doubt, but that doesn't excuse citizenry in a democracy from applying some minimal intelligence to this surreal situation.
petey tonei (MA)
We are a lying nation, aren't we? Recent history tells us our then President George W Bush lied about the reasons to go to war with Iraq (to settle an old personal score apparently) and took the whole country and other countries to war on the basis of those lies. Before him, venerable Bill Clinton lied about his personal extra marital affairs (strictly speaking he was only answerable to his wife Hillary and daughter Chelsea and it was none of America's business to meddle in their family affair).
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Everybody lies some of the time. "White" lies are intended to spare someone an injury or insult, and are excusable on this basis. "Dark" lies are intended to defraud and deceive.

I still consider "I did not have sexual relations (sic) with that woman..." one of the most memorable white lies of modern times.
JW (Palo Alto, CA)
How I wish this faux pas of Trump would stick. He seems to be made of some sort of advanced super plastic form of Teflon as none of his lies stick to him and smear him as they should.
Jean Genet wrote a book about just such a character, Querele. The main character has no conscience and easily lies his way through life as one after another of his friends is caught and charged with nefarious deeds that are of Q's doing, but they suffer the consequences as Q walks away unblemished.
The only way to end Trump's fun is for all those of us who know he is lying and realize what a disaster he would be as a President ("Will they take less?") to vote for Ms Clinton. Please, swallow your problems with her, she is the far better alternative.
Ron (Palo Alto Ca)
It's time to focus on the media and it's continuing complicity in allowing Trump to get coverage of his ridiculous behavior. List them every day: start with CNN personalities, Matt Lauer, Andy Lack, Jimmy Fallon, MSNBC, etc. As opposed to Trump voters who do not read the NYT, put energy into shaming the TV personalities! They probably read the Times! You are favoring him leading to the same process that helped take Bernie Sanders down.
Joe Giumette (Phoenix)
CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and yes, even the New York Times were taken in once again by the master manipulator. His "breaking news" was not that President Obama was born in America...it was not that "Hillary Clinton started this rumor." It was all a bare-faced plug for his new hotel in Washington, D.C. and he even conned a group of veterans into standing with him to lend the tawdry affair what he thought was a note of legitimacy. Shame on the media for falling for these obvious tricks, over and over. If our media watchdogs haven given up their mission, we are all truly doomed.
Tim B (California)
When you love yourself as much as Trump does, I guess "love is never having to say your sorry."

Amazing to see how many lemmings continue to follow this Pied Piper of Deception. Yesterday, I watched how Trump used a group of elder, distinguished veterans to "cover up" as he acknowledged President Obama was born in the U.S. Those vets had no clue that they were small pawns in his shell game.

Wake up America or you'll have a good chance of having a four year nightmare.
charles (Pennsylvania)
Has Trump no shame, has he no feelings, has he no decency, is he completely without any compassion for he fellow man? How can anyone support this person, devoid of any respect for anyone, how can the reporters support this egomaniac who only loves himself and is eagerly awaiting to be the President of the USA so that he can further his business. He is completely void of the workings of the government and congress, how can we put him into the most powerful office in the world. Please, dear voters, don't let this happen, do not vote for this person, do not vote for Trump.

There have been more than a few eyebrows raised over Mrs Trump's clouded immigration history, and whether or not she worked in the US illegally.

joymars (L.A.)
Calling Trump a liar isn't enough. He'll just squirm out of it. His followers don't hear it and/or don't care.

But let's get to the real deal: this country is not sexist, it's misogynist. A black man in the White House is nothing compared to the threat that at least 40% of Americans feel about a woman in the Oval Office. They just can't bear the thought.

Sarah Palin? She was accepted by these misogynists because she is like them. Misogyny knows no gender boundary. To her followers Palin looked sexy and fertile, and towed the subservient anti-choice line.

No, Hillary is way different. She isn't sexy. She's smart. She wants to do a "man's job" -- THE Man's job. That upends the world for many Americans. And they are willing to do anything to not let that happen.

Trump is just window-dressing for these American misogynists.

Who we're talking about here is a pathological liar.Nixon was a model of honesty in comparison. He - and his surrogates - even lie about how long he spewed this toxic fiction ,insisting that he dropped the issue years ago when he was still at this year. And in his self absorption Trump seems entirely unaware that his Birtherism was an attack against more than just the President because, whether intended or not, this was also an attack against the legitimacy of the votes of the majority of we who elected President Obama ,TWICE,and that is an act I won't forgive Trump for.
And the toxic effect of Trump's long held lie on the broader political realm of our nation is evidenced in the voter ID requirements in GOP controlled states which mainly hinder many of Obama's fellow African -Americans attempts to vote ,in the name of fighting non existing voter fraud.
In light of the above, let's KEEP America great and strong by NOT electing this deplorable pathological liar.

At last! The NYT has found its voice.
Now let's see a side-by-side comparison of what each candidate would bring to the most powerful office in the world. No more false equivalences; no more obsession to balance what won't. Assert for us that Hillary's lack of transparency in no way equates to Trump's pathological mendacity, that poor judgement about use of private e-mail servers cannot be weighed on the same scale as Trump "University" scams, and that the Clinton and Trump Foundations cannot simultaneously occupy the same ethical space.
Facts are facts. Lies are lies. Distortions are distortions. These are NOT debatable; cannot be parsed. Call out the lies and half-truths; shine your editorial spotlight ruthlessly on the characters of the man and woman who would be President. Just do your job.

Mr. Trump continues to be the class clown, defying authority and cutting up for the amusement of his base.

Of course Mr. Trump knew that president Obama was born in the U.S. Since 2011, Mr. Trump has been sitting in the back of the classroom and teasing the smartest kid in the class. Mr. Trump's base, particularly the deplorables, couldn't get enough of this disruptive political theater.

Thank goodness that the final episode of Mr. Trump's birther show laid the foundation for the next season. It's not a spoiler to say that the class clown will continue to engage in deliberately shocking behavior towards his newest target, Mrs. Clinton.
Gary Behun (Marion, Ohio)
What the media fails to properly take into account, as this article aptly points out, is that "facts" simply do not matter to his dimwitted supporters who want to be told simply what they want to hear. All politicians lie but not to the brazen extent Trump does. Here's a free basic principle in logic that his voters completely overlook: He lied that Obama isn't an American. Trump doesn't admit he lied about this or was even mistaken. Then immediately hides behind another lie by appealing to the "Hillary Haters" that she's the one who claimed Obama is not a US citizen.
How can anyone in their right mind support this guy? Historians will look back at this election as a period when Americans demonstrated their outmost capacity for their gullibility and total lack of thought in supporting a con man like Trump for President.
It's no wonder that people from other countries look at America as a bunch of idiots.

I guess New York Times' readers who are less likely to vote for Donald Trump highly appreciate and will more than like commend the New York Times Editorial Board for the endless repute of Donald Trump's brief statement on the birther issues, especially when the New York Times is earning money from running the countless Hillary Clinton campaign banner ad, "I'm With Her"....

Several questions I have concerning political advertising with the NYT is one, has the New York Times run any campaign ads from Donald Trump's camp and two, has Donald Trump's camp submitted any ads for publication to the NYT?
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The whole US media is addicted to ads for cars, drugs and carbon-based energy.

He's having a good jolly on our country. Playing it, playing us. The media particularly. And the incredibly ill-informed, biased and angry populace (a polite way of saying dumber). Our national complacency rolled out the red carpet for this. I'm angry. He's deplorable. But his enablers, the lazy, profit driven media outlets and celebrity "journalists" truly anointed this man to do and say whatever he wants without repercussion, and he knows it.

Let us not be too hard on Donald. After all, John Miller and John Barron (his virtual investigators) just returned from their five year investigation. Their new assignment could be personal advisors to D.T. This racist liar is beyond help. God help us if he gets elected. His first official act could be to put a ten foot sign on the W.H. lawn saying "Trump White House"!
Majortrout (Montreal)
Mr. Trump always has a way of interpreting the facts.

Actually, there is a remote association between Hillary Clinton, and one of her supporters regarding the birthed lie.

"John Avlon, editor-in-chief of the Daily Beast, explored the roots of the birther movement in his book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America. Avlon described a posting on the PUMA website with the heading "Obama May Be Illegal to Be Elected President!" He wrote that a Clinton volunteer in Texas, Linda Starr, played a key role in spreading the rumour."*

Citation:
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2015/sep/23/donald-tr...

Mrs. Clinton disavowed any association to the rumour:

"That is – no. That is so ludicrous, Don. You know, honestly, I just believe that, first of all, it’s totally untrue, and secondly, you know, the president and I have never had any kind of confrontation like that," Clinton said. "You know, I have been blamed for nearly everything, that was a new one to me."*
Gingi Adom (Ca)
Hillary was right - regarding the "deplorables" but they must be closer to 100% of those voting for Trump.
David Parsons (San Francisco, CA)
Trump's 5 years of racist lies in questioning the legitimacy of the nation's first African American President says everything about his fragile house of cards campaign.

He tells so many lies to the gullible, spins so many fact-free conspiracies, that they crash and burn with such a frequency that reporters scarcely know where to begin to address them.

How do you present a coherent picture of an incoherent candidate?

With Secretary Clinton, the media has it easy.

She has an e-mail controversy that can be ground into the dust with lazy dispatch by just repeating the same questions as nauseam.

At least it keeps the presidential race a contest.

With Trump, where to begin?

A burning wreckage of a business career?

Over 3,000 lawsuits over 30 years?

His fraud suit for running an unlicensed for profit school?

The fact that his Trump foundation made timely political contribution to the state attorney generals who declined to prosecute him for fraud?

The fact that he lambasted all Mexicans and lashed out at the Federal Judge he couldn't bribe for his Mexican heritage?

His history running segregated housing?

His Russian connection with campaign manager Paul Manafort, changing the GOP platform and receiving Russian help in hacking the DNC?

Calling media as PR agent John Miller to simultaneously brag about cheating his wife in court during a divorce by understating assets while making it clear to any potential super model he has plenty of money?

Really, where?

Trump's critics in the media finally have what they've demanded, which is an admission by Trump that Obama was born here. If the statement sounds silly, they have only themselves to blame. They demanded it. They got it. That they are unsatisfied is their own problem. Trump certainly doesn't owe them anything else.
KayJohnson (Colorado)
He owes the President an apology and he needs to take responsibility.
Chico (Laconia, NH)
Donald Trump has truly proven that he has no moral compass and no scruples when it comes to decency, he willing smears people with lies without any regard as to the consequences or ramifications of his actions.

He knowingly smeared the reputation of what may be one of the most decent families to inhabit the Whitehouse in years, which also happened to be the first African American President, and by doing so help feed and perpetuate his illegitimacy to right wing nuts, and fringe groups with racist agendas.

However, Donald Trump didn't stop there, he continued this psychotic hateful obsession with persistent questioning whether President Obama actually graduated from Harvard Law School, continually expressing doubt and demanding proof by showing his college transcripts.

Would Donald Trump have done this to any other "white" President?

There is no way around Donald Trump's troubling psychotic behavior, it's not funny or politics as usual, it's blatant racism and should be repudiated by the voters.

This country that has worked so hard in trying to make progress to overcome it's not so stellar racial history, has been set back generations by someone who has never ever shown any concern for working people, minorities, immigrants or the less fortunate in our society.

I don't know how anyone in good conscience, can stay at one of the Trump hotels or use his golf courses without being tainted with that vile stink of bigotry that has become Trump's calling card.
JTS (Westchester Count)
Perhaps the saddest and most telling aspect of all of this is that Donald Trump's birther accusations and retraction have been of interest to the American public.
Dr. Planarian (Arlington, Virginia)
The article likens Trump's announcement to, “Trump Finds the Earth No Longer Flat.”

Actually it was more like is, “Trump Announces the Earth No Longer Flat; Claims to Have Heroically Inflated It to Its Current Spherical Shape Himself.”

The MSM this week jumped to do the bidding of the Clinton campaign by reviving birtherism, but failed to remember correctly that it was Sid Blumenthal and David Brock that originated this during the 2008 Democrat primary.

Obama never helped himself as he had for 19 years maintained he was born in Kenya in his personal biography when it was helpful to him to do so.

The Flint Michigan minister politely rebuked Trump and we saw a meek and almost scared man immediately back down. He even cut the talk short.
Now this is the video which should be replayed again and again until election day.
PRant (NY)
If you repeat a lie often enough it becomes the truth. It's the code of most despots and dictators. But the election media essentially does the same thing with false equivalency, and making the election into a television reality contest.

And, surprise, surprise, Trump is the master of this kind of electioneering. He feeds the media and they come running like chickens to the corn thrown on the ground. He could win, and it's the "news" media will do it for him.

He's clearly more telegenic then Hillary. Think back to JFK and Nixon, the more experienced wonk. Kennedy could, in another life, been a game show host. Let's all face it, on TV Trump wins, maybe he's already won.

Hillary has to lure him in at the debates and make him make mistakes. Glaring embarrassing mistakes. Make him use his glib remarks, like rope, to hang himself.
Michael Gallagher (Cortland, NY)
And even the birthers, who still support Trump, don't believe Hillary started their movement. Is this a presidential campaign or a codependent relationship?
C Wolfe (<br/>)
Yeah, but at least the media have stopped talking about his tax returns, the Trump Foundation, and the future of his business interests should Trump become president, as they had finally begun to do.

So thanks for taking your eye off the ball once again and spending a 24-hour cycle on the non-issue of birtherism. It was worth visiting yesterday, and African Americans have had meaningful and enlightening things to say about the issue within their community, but let's get back to the hard stuff that calls for more than indignation and handwringing.
Karen (Chicago)
Wake up America!
What more do you need to know about Trump's character (or lack of) and how he operates?
Will there be a straw that breaks Trump's back, or are American citizens so oblivious and gullible to his chicanery?
William Case (Texas)
Donald Trump’s allegation that the Hillary Clinton campaign gave birth to the “birther movement” is based on an email message that Clinton campaign volunteers circulated during the 2008 Democratic primary. The email read: "Barack Obama’s mother was living in Kenya with his Arab-African father late in her pregnancy. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth. Obama carries multiple citizenships and is ineligible to run for President of the United States. United States Constitution, Article II, Section 1.” The Hillary Clinton campaign does not deny that Clinton campaign volunteers circulated the email, but says it was done without authorization. Clinton’s former campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle told CNN on Friday that Clinton quickly fired one of the workers who passed on the email. In addition, former McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief James Asher said Friday that Clinton confidante Sid Blumenthal “strongly urged me to investigate the exact place of President Obama’s birth, which he suggested was in Kenya.”
JayK (CT)
Why did it take so long for the NYT to say Trump "deligitimized" his candidacy?

His candidacy was illegitimate 5 years before he descended from the escalator.

His relentless five year peddling of the alt-right birther conspiracy theory should have resulted in an automatic disqualification.

He was never a legitimate candidate, but nobody in the media had the guts to say so, and at this point it might just be too late.

He never should have been taken seriously in the first place.
KR (Long Island, NY)
Most amazing is how the media (reflected in polls) focus on Hillary Clinton's "bad week" because she got sick (and didn't immediately confide in the universe but chose to "power through it"), but overlooked entirely that also in that "bad week" was the Commander-in-Chief Forum on Wednesday, just two days before her diagnosis when she was likely already ill. And she still was every bit competent, forceful Commander-in-Chief with a command of the biggest concerns - foreign policy and terrorism - while Donald Trump was a scary pretender.

Every single time I listen to Trump, all I hear is lie after lie. Wouldn't it be nice if the so-called "patriots" on Fox News decided to actually be patriotic and take a moral stand on this megalomaniac?

I don't think Trump should be allowed to get away with the lies he told about seeing the thousands and thousands of people in New Jersey celebrating the coming down of the two towers on 9/11; or the hundreds of friends that died in the two towers, subsequently changed to many, which is another proven lie.

How many funerals of the many friends who died on 9/11 did he attend?

How many 9/11 memorial service over the years did Donald Trump attend?

How much aid and assistance did he provide or lobby for help of 9/11 victims?

My guess is the Pathological Liar didn't do any of those things......Trump has shown by words and lack of deeds to have no shame or conscience, and is nothing more than an opportunist.
keko (New York)
Trump's success indicates the large-scale failure of the American educational system and US media.

On the other hand, there used to be a politician who said "I can feel your pain" and tried to move towards rational policies from there. Why can we not find a progressive and serious politician today to do the same?

Trump is a salesman. A sleazy one. Think Glengarry Glen Ross times 100.

He has no interest in truth. Only in what will motivate his prospect in agreeing with him. He has no problem saying contradictory things, because he doesn't see the contradiction. All he wants is your agreement.

His birther claims were absurd and offensive.

His only truth is that whatever he says, he is right, even when he demonstrably is wrong.

He is a sick, sick, sick man.

It was cruel of the Republican Party to have allowed him into the primaries. To inflict him on the world is unforgivable.

He must be defeated, soundly, in November.
The Refudiator (Florida)
Donald Trump lies. No surprise there.

The surprise is the media rarely challenges him on it. I attribute that to poor reporting and the astound breadth and volume of his prevarication. Every second of every waking moment Trumps "good brain" gauges the mood his audience and says what he believes they want to hear. He does it so often even he cant keep track of his lies.

How can Trump enter into negotiations with Congress or foreign leaders and be believed.? He cant.
Kathleen (Boston)
The really said thing is that some of my Texas friends are saying "well that's Trump's opinion" and still believe that Obama was born elsewhere. I find even more upsetting is what he said later that evening encouraging someone to shoot Hillary. This man belongs in a mental hospital where they throw away the key.
Janet Sobel (San Diego)
To me, this is the manner in which Trump will always deal with being caught having to acknowledge being wrong. When he can't make America great again, because he has no realistic ideas to solve the problems he is promising to solve. When it becomes apparent that terrorist activities are continuing to occur around the world, notwithstanding he said he will stop all of them in short order, who will he blame? We KNOW he won't admit being wrong. His plan is to never be held accountable. Who will he blame when he cannot deliver on his promise of a wall directed by him, but paid for by Mexico? Will he blame Obama? Clinton? Michelle Obama? ElizabEth Warren? The pastor from Flint? Hispanics in America? Democrats? Who? No. He will, instead, fan flames of discontent - in order to praise himself. The greatest negotiator that even walked the earth, the man who knows more than the generals, the one who promises to bring full employment to our depressed cities, the one who promises great schools and prisons, what will he say to the people who trusted his promises when they remain empty?

I would ask him during the debate, how he will be held accountable if his promises are unfilled? I'd pin him down to tell us how we can judge his success. How long before America is great again? Before blacks are no longer shot for no reason? Before all those poor and unemployed people are employed again? He must be required to tell us.
JSK (Crozet)
How do we convince so many people who say they will support Trump that intellectual capacity is important? Is it a hopeless cause? Will reality TV win over reasoning every time? The answer might be yes.

All political candidates dissemble--Trump is something else. You are talking about his birther story nonsense. Then he uses another lie--that usual nonsense about complete gun bans and confiscation--to suggest that one can hint at unilateral disarmament and violence against a political opponent.

We have said almost all that can be said. Are the American people really going to elect this monster? Is there so much disgust with any perceived "elite" that a majority of voters would drive us over a cliff, left to hope that existing checks and balances could keep the beast in his cage? It looks like they might.

This is something that has been fostered by the nation, by politicians who work to divide us even more than we are, by people who refuse to require intellectual qualification and experience for the highest office in the land, by news outlets who cannot move beyond polls and have a distorted sense of equivalency.
sbmd (florida)
Ever get allergy shots so you could become tolerant to something that would otherwise make you very sick? Well, that's what Trump is doing. Small doses of daily lies and soon enough you don't react anymore. You just shrug your shoulders at something that would have once made you furiously angry and sick with disgust.
What he needs to inoculate you, though, is the media. And the media is just happy to oblige, because, it turns out, we are addicted to the media and the spectacle of Trump, the Hero of Controversy.
Robert Bowers (Hamilton, Ontario)
How dare the editorial board present a headline that presents Trump's lies about President Obama and Secretary Clinton as "MYTHS". Doing so is a disgraceful abdication of responsibility to truth and the English language. Do your job, please. Leave the shameless propaganda and brainwashing to the GOP and their vile candidate.
Ginger Walters (Richmond VA)
This man is completely beyond the pale in terms of his dishonesty and lack of a moral compass. The fact that so many Americans are being completely bamboozled by this dangerous clown is extremely frightening. He plays the media like a fiddle. He's not held accountable for the multitude of lies he spews on a daily basis. There's so much ignorance in this country, and Trump is capitalizing on it. It will be our downfall. I am truly frightened about the potential outcome of this election. Our system is broken.
smford (USA)
America today is looking more and more like Germany in the early 1930s. Scarier by the day.
Charles (holden)
The language I would like to use to describe this "man" would never make it into your comments. Vile, despicable degenerate piece of filth. He didn't nominate himself. A bunch of ignorant, angry, fact-challenged American voters did. If he could be only their president, that would be okay. Trouble is, they will take the rest of us down with them.
Christa (Poland, OH)
Dear NYT,
Thank you for finally calling the GOP nominee's words a lie. Now, please continue to label his statements for what they are -- lies.

The GOP nominee has poisoned the entire election process by rewriting each event, each episode so that he always comes out looking like the winner and everyone else is the loser, most recently with his lie about the pastor in Flint.

I am concerned that NYT reporting continues to give a pass to the GOP nominee. Please count up the number of words that your newspaper has spent on dogging Secretary Clinton about the Clinton Foundation and whether there are "perceptions" of something not quite right despite all records being available. Then, count up the number of words that you have used in only oblique references to the GOP nominee's foundation (with its illegal actions on record). How many words has the NYT used to corner the GOP nominee on his covert trade deals with the enemies of this nation through his "business dealings" or to question how "his kids" will take over his convoluted business dealings without ever informing their father (trust them)? Then count the number of words the NYT has used calling for the dismantling of the Clinton Foundation, for the removal of President Clinton from any connections to it, and even from Chelsea Clinton (the daughter) from participating.

Please stop reporting on the laughableness of the GOP nominee and robustly tackle the seriousness and unevenness of reporting in this campaign.

Next Trump claim: Hillary was behind the Crucifixion. In fact, she bought the nails herself. Luckily, the Don was there to roll away the stone and save us all.
Gerard (PA)
My impression at the time was that someone said "he wasn't even born in America" because they forgot that Hawaii is a State - and then the narrative changed to Kenya: ignorance clouded in the absurd.
I have always wanted to hear the rest.
Was it a Kenyan conspiracy to take over America? When was this agent planted in America? Or was he acting alone: a skilled forger from the villages walking across our borders, the illegal immigrant without equal. Come on Donald, don't give up now, finish the story. It could be a mini-series.

The Press must relentlessly ask Trump to produce the following, at every press conference & in every interview from now to Election Day:
1. Audit letter from IRS.
2. Documentation allegedly reviewed by Melania's Trump's lawyer regarding her immigration status.
3. Chain of custody for the medical lab tests Trump claimed were his on the Dr Oz show (isn't it odd that he told Dr Oz that he "felt like a 30-year-old" & then produced lab results that looked like those of a 30-year-old rather than a 70-year-old?).

The man is a pathological liar & a mentally ill narcissist who must be held to account. The future of our Democracy depends upon the Press doing its job day after day to expose this man for who & what he really is.
PETER EBENSTEIN MD (WHITE PLAINS NY)
The Donald no longer needs the birther lie-- he has the Ku Klux Klan and other white racist vote sewn up. So he is now attempting to broaden his appeal but, as Joseph Goebbels advised, by NOT admitting wrong doing and by adding another lie, blaming his opponent.
rudolf (new york)
Indeed Trump is a disgusting and sick man. Always was and always will. The fact though that he has so many followers makes you want to throw up when you hear "I am an American."
Susan (Oceanside)
I completely agree.

It is mind boggling how on earth anyone believes his lie. What is also astonishing that the polls show closers race. What does it say about those want to vote for the charlatan.
Mel Farrell (New York)
No Trumpster I, yet one must not let obfuscation and attempts to manage perception lie, pun intended.

See Telegraph report -

"The lie that Barack Obama was not born in the US has been fuelled by fringe Republicans — but supporters of Hillary Clinton, now Mr Obama’s Secretary of State, are largely to blame for starting it.

False rumours about Mr Obama’s background first surfaced in 2004, in Illinois, where he was a state senator. Andy Martin, a perennial local candidate and litigant, claimed Mr Obama was secretly Muslim.

Related theories — including that he was radicalised in a “madrassa” in Indonesia — developed after Mr Obama entered the national stage with a speech to the Democratic National Convention later that year.

In 2005, Mr Obama went to Washington ..."

Mr Bill (Rego Park, Queens, NY)
Mr. Trump's lie yesterday (well, one of many) is that Hillary Clinton and her campaign started the birther movement. Nothing you write supports this lie; nor does the Telegraph story. It is an established fact that Ms. Clinton herself was not involved. If there is evidence that the supporters who were responsible represented her campaign, please produce it. Thank you.

For the record and history: It was the Empress herself and her confidant hack Sidney Blumenthal and her campaign manger Patti Doyle who pushed the ugly smear in 2008. McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief James Asher confirmed it was Blumenthal who told him in 08 to investigate confident reports that "Barack Obama’s mother was living in Kenya with his Arab-African father late in her pregnancy. She was not allowed to travel by plane then, so Barack Obama was born there and his mother then took him to Hawaii to register his birth"
McClatchy did in fact sent a reporter to Kenya to investigate Clinton's claim, but found no evidence to support the lie.
This is coming from the editorial who endorsed the Empress nominee before one single vote was cast in the primaires.
Keep peddling your Empress smear.
Nobody trust you or her
She will lose.
Wally Burger (Chicago)
For all of Trump's faults and weaknesses (and there are many), the fact remains that Hillary is a terrible campaigner. She is highly qualified to be POTUS whereas Trump is highly unqualified but he may win because she is such a terrible campaigner. She has lots of good company, unfortunately. Messrs. Kerry, Gore, and Dukakis were all terrible campaigners. What should be a no-brainer, a slam dunk, may turn out to be a (global) disaster. She has no charisma and she hasn't yet hit him where it hurts (in order to throw him off point) so that he shoots himself in the foot (something he is very good at). She needs to have vendors who were wronged by Trump and workers who weren't paid by Trump, bankers whose banks lost money while Trump made millions, and anyone else who was hurt by him. There is still time, Hillary. Get with the program.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The race for president of the US is an endurance contest, not an intellectual one.

Governing wisely requires intellect.
Vee (NY)
I do not think Hillary's campaign skills are at issue here as much as the constant attacks in the press against her--particularly over the last two years--about Benghazi, her emails, and the non-issue of the Clinton Foundation. Consider, additionally, the free, comparatively uncritical coverage her opponent has enjoyed from that same press corp, and we are presented with a status quo where Hillary has had to run against her opponent and the media, and that sad state of affairs continues.

It appears that the email stories have stopped only after revealed information from the FBI makes Colin Powell look suspect, thanks to Rep. Elijah Cummings releasing information that uncovered Powell's blatant lie that Hillary had been using her server for a year before he wrote to her. As it turns out, he wrote to her days after she was sworn in.

So, if anything, Hillary is an excellent campaigner, because she, more than any other candidate in recent history has had to run, not only against a candidate who embodies many "isms", but also against the media that have refused to hold that candidate accountable for the very words that come out of his mouth.
Ethel Guttenberg (Cincinnait)
Wally Burger I don't think Kerry, Gore and Dukakis lost because they were terrible campaigners. ( Actually, Gore won the popular vote) They lost because the voters voted on lies presented by the Republican party. Most people are simple uninformed voters. Few in our population read papers like the Times. Most listen to FOX and have no reference to fairness.
No, Hillary is not a bad campaigner. Trump is a liar who has been allowed to get away with his lies.
Mindful (Ohio)
Can we please hear about the real issues from the greatest newspaper on the planet? I understand that Mrs. Clinton has 38 policy points on her website. Can we please hear about her views as compared to Trump's? Can I please read thoughtful debate as to which policy is likely to be more successful and why? We already know what DJT is; we need to hear about how his plans will change the world as compared to Mrs. Clinton's . We need an educated electorate more than ever. Please NYT?
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Hillary's proposals are laid out like uncooked spaghetti in the box. Trump's are piles of overcooked spaghetti.

The Editorial Board has been calling Trump a liar for a long time...but the liar won the Republican primary and he's gonna be President also.

The reason he's gonna win is because Clinton is the liar who cannot be trusted.

"This may shock you: Hillary Clinton is fundamentally honest"
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/mar/28/hillary-clinton-ho...

The Clinton Foundation helps people worldwide. The Clintons put money into it; it has a good reputation and has helped millions. There is no pay for play that anyone can find.

Chaffetz and Republicans defunded embassy security and spent millions trying to blame Clinton for it.

The earliest label of liar came from Safire when Clinton was working on universal health care and the Republicans didn't like it.

Colin Powell did advise her not to use a government server.

She had pneumonia and tried to keep working; she was not contagious. A woman can't even go on working when she doesn't feel well without being called a liar.

Please get real.
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
I would be more concerned about the liar you trust. Look what has happened to contractors and shops that ended up getting pennies on the dollar for services and merchandise they sold him. Look what happened to the students who trusted Trump University....isn't there a fraud trial starting in November? One of the greatest lies he has convinced people of is not to trust the candidate with the most experience helping people.
Mark Lebow (Milwaukee, WI)
As David Plouffe put it, and as everyone falling back on Donald-Trump-is-unfit-to-be-president comments needs to be reminded, "It is not enough to simply beat Trump. He must be destroyed thoroughly. His kind must not rise again."

Calling him unfit is no longer enough. Stop him.
Joe Aaron (San Francisco, CA)
You simply can't make this up.

Conspiracy theories and lies are deeply entrenched in American society. For decades Fox News, right wing extremist and segment of the wealthy have nurtured this pathology. The left have also added to the fray but clearly they are not mainly responsible.
This disease in our society was also fueled by the Tea party, the Koch brothers and other corporate tax dodgers. They were given free rein by the Supreme Court decision (Citizen United) to spread propaganda to an ill informed
Populous. A very twisted interpretation of free speech.
Donald Trump has been a liar all his life but
he has taken this aberration to higher heights and has plenty of help along the way.

Is it not about time that America accepted that, given his ancestry, Obama is half white, and only half black.
The implicit denial of this fact seems to epitomize an endemic racism from which the country needs to mature.

At this point, the bells and whistles should be going off for even the most stalwart Trump supporter -- though probably not.
Not only is this man a bundle of contradictions, but he's an inveterate liar who will stoop to any level to win.
And if he does, we lose.
CVP (Brooklyn)
Frankly, what's most astounding to me is that you guys, The Times, The Media, are treating this as a major story - a major development. C'mon! Really? Why would any news organization waste precious resources to cover a Trump announcement about Birtherism? What might he possibly say that could be deemed newsworthy? Surely, not that he now believes Barack Obama is an American? So what?
gary (belfast, maine)
Donald J. Trump, the man, is not to be feared: His attachment to and dependence upon transparent deception and outright lies is, because those who would most benefit from our failure and his success in this instance should be feared. This is a man who has become irretrievably dependent on surreal self-deception, manipulation; fawning affection from those who depend directly upon Trump organizations. We should feel compassion for Donald J. Trump, but not affection for or loyalty to a man who would, intentionally, debase a position within our society that should continue to be held in high regard.
Dean H Hewitt (Tampa, FL)
When is everyone going to get it. This guy is a con man. He twists and turns to do two things promote himself and his message. He doesn't care who he hurts, doesn't care about the wreckage behind him. It's really up to the media to slice and dice him. Hillary catches pneumonia and it is a two week thing with dark clouds and shouts of doom. A Donald escapade, not so much.
g-nine (shangri la)
The bully's bluff called he had to show his cards and frankly he has nothing. He ran the bet up as high as he could knowing he didn't have the winning hand. Will he have to pay up for his bad bet or will he get yet another pass on yet another lie?
Jeff C (New York , NY)
Yes, Donald Trump is a con man - let's hope this is the end of him.

Deplorable? That is too good a word.

As a life long resident of New York I believe I speak for many when I say I hope he finds some other place to call home. How about Russia Mr. Trump. Ply your trade in Russia.
RevWayne (the Dorf, PA)
Lying is constant with D.T. I wouldn't for one minute believe his latest physical report any more than he lost "many, many" friends on 9/11 or thousands of Muslims celebrated in N.J.or his campaign is the first to provide family assistance - tax relief - to those needing child care. Please, Hillary has had a policy on her web for over a year. We are lied to always - indeed, every time he speaks. So, let's stop talking about him "stretching the truth." He is a lier, period. Yes, D.T. Is a "con artist" who apparently has millions of Americans believing his jibberish. It would seem his whole empire is built of fabrication and lies. Unfortunately, his "tough" talk has awakened the alt-right and allowed it to become very public. This encouragement to the alt-right is scary. Racism itself is a lie about people whether based on color or religion or physical appearance or sexual orientation. An apology for anything he has lied about whether birth isn't or anything else is not accepted. His mean, lying attitude cannot be dismissed simply because he says he is sorry.
KK (WA)
Trump MUST be called out and confronted for the lying, bigoted despot that he is. The PRESS MUST do their job to save our democracy.

Clearly the leaders of the Republican Party: Ryan, McConnell and McCain have failed to put the interests of America first.

Trump is has already made a mockery out of the GOP and is now disgracing the very presidency and our country itself.
Richard Klemm (Orlando, Florida)
Donald Trump is the most dishonest person to be the nominee of a major political party for president in American history!!!!!
Richard Grayson (Brooklyn, NY)
Will he ever say that Ted Cruz's father was not involved in the assassination of President Kennedy? Will he ever say that he did not witness thousands of Muslims celebrating in the streets of Jersey City on 9/11? Will he ever take back his many other libels, slanders and false insinuations about his fellow Americans? What is wrong with this person?
Concerned Citizen (Anywheresville)
Maybe on the day you stop calling your fellow American citizens "a basket of deplorables".

Works both ways, sir.
Jim (Wash, DC)
It works both ways when the comparison is equitable. You are comparing apples and oranges, otherwise known as a false equivalence. Trump states as true and factual his false claims about Cruz's father, the Muslims cheering in Jersey City and "his many other libels, slanders."
Clinton's comment about "delplorables" was plainly an opinion and was expressed as such, and not as a factual statement.
That you cannot see a difference so simple, begs this question of you and the many others who say things similar: "What is wrong with this person?"
Whatever you are all so angry about, you should be conscious not to let it cloud your judgement.
Jim Bean (Lock Haven, PA)
Why are so many Americans getting ready to vote for this arrogant narcissistic con artist? This is the very scary thing....the crazed elephant in the room....the underbelly of the leviathan.
Ken Camarro (Fairfield, CT)
Donald Trump's campaign is now and always has been guerilla warfare. The Democrats put their wagons in a circle and establishment Republicans did the same at first then this rodeo guy showed up with wild hair riding a mustang and he and his followers rode around both sets of wagons with their guns out and ablazing all of which was covered by the media who were polite.

The tragedy stems from the failed GOP business model and its decision not to govern and groom strong legislators.

All the GOP has done for 8 years is stall its own party and America along with it.

Chronic and pathological liar who is responsible for obfuscating whatever Mr. Obama was trying to do by starting a movement to de legitimize him is anti national. There is a saying : "As the king, so the people". I foresee stock market crash on lies and deregulation by his followers , furtherance of global warming by his followers and de legitimizing achievements of colored people in this country and elsewhere. Dark times begin on Nov 8th if DT is elected . A new tv show called trump tv will be on for more than 24 hours a day and new versions of DSM will be written every 6 months based on not yet known pathological conditions that human beings can harbor.

PK2NYT (Sacramento, CA)
Trump will never get to a real issues because he has nothing to talk about. He will keep playing the media and the gullible electorate from one sensational lie to the next one. The strategy for Clinton surrogates and supporters is take the fight to him. Any time he calls for a meeting or press on TV or in person, ask him about his lies even if he does not want to talk about it ...badger him at every opportunity for each one of his lies. Keep at it and tell him and his surrogates that no one is interested in his talking points until he responds without dodging. If he stops having any press contacts and just to stick to his supporters rally so be it. This is the responsibility of each respectable news media and try to outFox him and his supporters. This is the only way this rascal of a man can be brought to his knees. To use Trump's own phrase, that will be a pretty sight.
DCN (Illinois)
Everyone with a functioning brain cell knows Trump is a complete fraud. The level of support he enjoys must be blamed on an electorate who is too dense and willfully ignorant to understand facts and a press that treats Trump and Mrs. Clinton as equally credible candidates. If the press will use the same microscope on Trump as they do on Clinton perhaps his chance of winning will be reduced to where it should be - slim to none.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
Finally, without hesitation nor doubt, crooked lying Trump is called out as a huge, shameless, and unrepentant LIAR. The question remaining is, why do we still have relatively smart folks feast in irrationality, by supporting this thug?
Hugh O'Malley (Jacksonville, FL)
Beyond time to call out the many Republican leaders who supported Trump's poisoning of the American political system by remaining silent in the wake of Trump's lies.
Idoltrous_Infidel (Texas)
Its time Trump was held accountable for his numerous despicable lies.
How about asking him to name the "hundreds of his friends who died in 9/11 and the funerals he attended".

Trump is a liar and cheat of he most vile kind. Its duty of media to tell it.
Caper (Osterville, MA)
Donald Trump was not born in America. No. No. He was bred in America. There is a major distinction. Do you know what it is?
Dale C Korpi (Minnesota)
The Black Caucus called for Mr. Trump to apologize. The better call is for voter registration to increase, where possible, and for precincts to organize election day group events to increase the vote.
Mr. Trump is now on to the next chaos statement, likely kitchen tested over a cheeseburger and fries with his ilk.
The question is can center on if Mr. Trump is sound, how can a topic rattle in your brain for over five years? If he takes that long on national defense it is game over.
He did not go all four years to Wharton, only two, his brother got him in. Get out the vote and "school" Mr. Trump.
Dale C Korpi
jacobi (Nevada)
Trump has no reason to apologize to the black caucus.

Glad to see that the editors finally got the gumption to call a lie a lie.

But they sure have difficulty writing the "L" word and slipped back in the text of the article by referring to the two new lies Trump told as "myths"

But "myth" is not a correct synonym for a "lie". Myths are traditional stories generally about some aspect of supernatural forces that affect mankind, such as about the Greek Gods, such as fables, fairy tales, etc.

Referring to Trump's new lies as "myths" elevates them to a level they do not deserve. The Editorial Board needs to call Trump out plainly as a lair, without using terms that make his lies sound like innocent fairy tales. We've heard those specific lies - repeated yesterday by white supremacists that Trump continues to play to. People who support Trump need to be reminded that they are trafficking with a racist, pure and simple.
Terry Pierce (Florida)
Some media outlet ought to create a tote board for Trump's lies - and it needs to be big. Or YUGE. The tote board should distinguish between his silly, pointless lies (such as the "NFL sent me a letter") to the consequential lies (such as "I never met Pam Bondi" except of course he has, or "I don't know anything about David Duke or Putin," "my father and I won the federal housing discrimination law suit," etc), to the lies which undermine the fabric of America, such as the birther lies (in all their variety), the NJ Muslims celebrating 9/11 attacks lie, Obama/HRC founded ISIS lie, etc. The tote board would be displaying a number in the thousands at this point.

Given all of the above, Gail Collins is right to ask, how is it that HRC has the credibility problem?

It may be too facile to place the blame for Trump's popularity (and HRC's unpopularity) at the feet of the press. Still, the press certainly is at fault for covering ad nauseam the Clinton Foundation or her emails but nary a mention of Trump's fraudulent Foundation or his nefarious business ties. Are Trump's scandals just too tangled for the press to bother with? It does seem like the press takes the easy road most of the time.

I have been waiting for follow-up stories regarding Newsweeks's extensive article on Trump's dangerous international entanglements. Nada so far.

But thank you NYT for today's editorial. A liar should be called a liar, plain and simple. And a deplorable bigot should be called that as well.
JOELEEH (nyc)
Trump was backed into this statement of fact (recoupled with a new lie, as he is, after all, Trump) by his handlers, the spin-master Kellyanne Conway and the failed former Presidential aspirant Giuliani. They deliberately started saying on TV that Trump believes in Obama's natural - born bona fide in order to force him to say it too. Sadly for them he cannot do anything with respectability. Literally introduced onstage by a birther, he substitutes a promo for a new hotel for the press conference he promised the press who assembled, and then jumps on the new lie (also pre-fielded by Conway and Giuliani) that his birtherism was merely straightening out a situation started by Clinton. What a shape-shifting organism truth is when it comes out of Trump's mouth. I just wish the so-called "liberal-biased media" would hold him to the same standard that they hold the normal politiicians to. He is running to be the most powerful politician of all. He became a politician over a year ago. Can the press start treating him like one and stop "grading on the curve" already?
Matthew Clark (Loja, Ecuador)
Thank you for calling it what it is. A lie.

Funny, but it appears that this is yet another media created narrative, the better to avoid doing any real work. Questions were asked, the answers weren't in line with the media narrative (get rid of him at any cost), and voila! an editorial, alleging guess what? racism.

Never gets old.

During my professional career I had the privilege of traveling from underdeveloped country to underdeveloped country; saw great places, magnificent mountains, gigantic waterfalls, very large fertile plains. Unfortunately in those days, when I arrived to the next airport I would find a demagogue, dictator, etc. worse than the one I left behind when I boarded that airplane. These days, retired now for a long time, when I wake up in the morning and read the news about Trump I ask myself several times to which country I just arrived as if I was still working and not retired. I takes me a some time and some mental effort every morning to realize I am retired and I am in the USA.

Please don't deny what I heard her say, "check the birth certificate", more than once. So did Bill. The media ignored it.

Back in those days, the NYT and the rest of the Progressive hoard were infatuated with a man named Barack, HC was an afterthought. There is no doubt that Blumenthal tried to push the story, but found no takers.

People forget, the angry bitter woman from 2008 that was losing states left and right to the young inexperienced Senator.

Hillary has always been the second choice. And yes, the "birther" rumors started in her corner.
Carol lee (Minnesota)
When Trump started this nonsense about his fictional investigation, lo those many years ago, I was appalled that the media gave him a platform for his rantings, appearances on tv etc. Now with his "never mind" he rubs their noses in the dirt and rejoices that he played them like a fiddle. What a guy.
Mr Bill (Rego Park, Queens, NY)
The only contestable statement in this editorial appears in the first line of the penultimate paragraph: "[F]acts still matter." Would that it were for tens of millions of voters. I speak of Trump supporters only, because if there are any Clinton supporters who fail to acknowledge and condemn her frequent obfuscations and occasional falsehoods, I have yet to meet one.

Witness, from Dr. Krugman's column yesterday: "By large margins, Republicans say that unemployment is up and the stock market is down under Mr. Obama, the opposite of the truth."

We are well on the way to being so far down the rabbit hole that it becomes a black hole from which not even light can escape.
Gary Bernier (Holiday, FL)
There are only two types of people that will vote for Donald Trump; the hopelessly ignorant and racists. If you plan on voting for Trump, pick one and buy a t-shirt.
Frank Pelaschuk (Canada)
Donald Trump is an interesting individual if one is drawn to dangerous buffoons and liars. If Truth slapped him in the face, he would not recognize it any more than he would Reality. He is a fantasist who makes claims the world can see replayed again and again yet he'll later deny them; it's a media conspiracy. Simply put, to this viewer, he's nuts. But what is truly astounding is that his supporters take it all in, his buffoonery, his outlandish claims and promises, his vile racism, his distortions and outright lies, his false claims regarding his business acumen, his past and present history of stiffing ordinary workers, his boastful self-reverence and constant self-referencing, his bullying, his insults, all, all this and without batting an eye! Are they really that ignorant if not that stupid?
Americans are angry. I can see that and they should be. But be angry at the right targets. Stop buying the myths of Big Business, stop swallowing the false promises of politicians in the pockets of neo-liberals. Be mad at the likes of Trump who have shipped your jobs overseas, who have cut your wages and extended your hours, who rip off contractors, who evade paying taxes, who exploit the poor and desperate, who union bust and hire illegals to take your place. Be angry, but think about what it is that makes you angry. Trump is a lunatic. Voting for him is not only self-destructive; it's an act of lunacy.
Patrick (Ashland, Oregon)
Mr. Trump continues to astound many of us with his lies, his racism, his methods, etc. Even more astounding is the fact that so many people say they plan to vote for him. I can't believe that there are so many uninformed, amoral or ignorant people in this country. What is going on with these people?

So, I've come to the conclusion that raw hatred is at the root of his popularity. It includes hatred of those who are "different", hatred of inclusion, hatred of equity, hatred of those who don't believe what Mr. Trump believes, and, above all, hatred of Hillary Clinton.

This hatred of Hillary has many roots; she's a woman, she's forceful, she's progressive and, she's usually the smartest person in the room. This makes for a toxic brew and shuts out all sense of reason and reasoning. Some, not all, may be "deplorable", but, all of them are sad creatures. They've reached a point at which hatred , envy and fear rule their lives.
joymars (L.A.)
What's going on? Mysoginy.
Rita (California)
Trump fans who fixate on the origins of questions about the President's birthplace are trying to distract.

Only one candidate has voiced support for the birther nonsense. Only one candidate asked to see the President's birth certificate and then supported fanciful questions and conspiracy theories about its authenticity. Only one candidate has kept this as an issue for years.

This game of distraction might work for some. But the rest of the country and the world know that Trump and his supporters, paid or otherwise, have perpetuated a disgraceful lie for years. And can not come clean about it.

Trump: No honor. No integrity.
Marcel (Florida)
So Sidney Blumenthal did not first push the birther issue? James Asher is confirming that he did in 2008 (before Trump even touched it)
AACNY (New York)
Are you kidding? Democrats desperately need this "distraction" to galvanize black voters and improve overall turnout. This is why everything old is new again.

By the way, the words, "democrats", "honor" and "integrity," cannot even appear in the same sentence together now that Hillary Clinton is head of the party.
Thomas Payne (Cornelius, NC)
Now that this is "cleared-up" I suspect we'll be hearing more calls to violence? If, God forbid, this man wins the White House I'll be closing down my investment accounts and I'll be buying an AR-15 for home defense.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The nihilists who love Trump will be delighted to see the stock market crash if he's elected.
alayton (new york)
Stop giving this family of grifters free press. Trump is a liar all 267 pounds of him. His wife, Melania lied about her convention speech. Donnie Jr lies about not knowing who Pepe is and not realizing what the gas chamber actually refers to. Barbie Ivanka lies about her father's child care plan and can't handle when the reporter from Cosmo confronts her with facts. She snapped like a Stepford Wife. This entire family thinks they will end up in the White House because they had a reality show. Banish them to Bravo TV where they would fit right in.
R (Kansas)
How does the GOP continue to allow Trump to be their candidate? He is a national embarrassment and Trump long ago gave the party reason to remove him as the candidate. Trump is a disgrace to America. This campaign season is just a long nightmare.
jack black (North Carolina)
How come Reince Prebus ( whatevah) was not removed as chair of he RNC? He presided over the fall of 17 (whatevah) repubs to PT Barnum trump and doesn't lose his power? Can someone explain that? The DNC chair gets caught in some bad emails and is forced to step down. What's the bigger scenario here?
Louise Madison (Wisconsin)
Ps when will the press begin calling the physical threats against Hillary what they are? They are threats which need to be investigated by law enforcement. Stop making them to be a joke!!
Steve Bolger (New York City)
There seems to be nothing more sacred in the US than arming up to threaten politicians.
AACNY (New York)
Calling out anti-gun advocates for their hypocrisy is very common. Often they have personal security and armed guards while advocating for the removal of guns from ordinary citizens.
KJ (Tennessee)
This is typical Trump. When he refused to pay contractors, it was for shoddy work. The same shoddy work he proudly showed off and bragged about when he opened his buildings. If something is good, it's all Trump, whether it's a product or a concept. If it's bad, it's someone else's fault.

So why not play it back at him? Here's your headline:
Donald Trump Says Hillary Clinton Made A Fool Out Of Him For Eight Years
Bill (Madison, Ct)
All his supporters who believed that myth are in the basket of deplorables because it was based on racism. That accounts for over 50% of his deplorables. Anone with half a brain knew it wasn't true. There were birth announcements in the Hawaiian papers at the time of his birth. Stupid, stupid, stupid
EDK (Boston, MA)
Shouldn't he now be sued for slander or defamation of character? Oh, but that would be just another one of his 1,300 law suits to date, and it would be dismissed as "politically motivated." The hypocrisy this offensive and, yes, deranged man gets away with is unbelievable.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Public figures can't win defamation lawsuits in the US.
Anna (New York)
He should be arrested for his thinly covered threats of inciting violence against the person of Hillary Clinton and violence in general in case she's elected. What does he think he'd doing? Start a second civil war? It doesn't matter he is the presidential candidate of a major political party, especially not since he's abusing that position to utter his vile threats and lies and enrich himself. Sane Republican leaders should kick him out and replace him with any of the 16 candidates he bulldozed over. It's not too late. They'll probably win the election then, but I'll take that over the chance Trump wins.
MLB (Cambridge)
The truth: During the 2008 Democratic Presidential Primary in New Hampshire, some Clinton campaign workers claimed that Barack Obama was unqualified to serve as president because he was not born in the United States. There is no evidence, however, that Mrs. Clinton or her campaign approved or encouraged those Clinton supporters to make that claim. Moreover, unlike Mr. Trump, Mrs. Clinton did not lead the so-called "Birther Campaign." For Mr. Trump to suggest that his Birther campaign simply sought to resolve an issue first raised by Clinton Campaign in 2008 and, therefore, ultimately benefited Mr. Obama and our republic is an outrageous lie.
Rita (California)
You mean: yet another outrageous Trump lie.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Yes, the Republican Party does provide double agent "volunteers" to credulous Democratic candidates.
Jude P (Brooklyn)
Nor is there any evidence that Ms Clinton ever push that beyond the question raised by a staffer. Once again Trump is shows who he is.
Gene Chorney (Oshawa, ON)
There is a long history in American politics of "The Big Lie": "weapons of mass destruction," "trickle down economics,"...the consequences for the American people of incredible pain. And the political pundits are dumbfounded at the citizens attraction to Trump?
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Trump fans must believe they need to be lied to even more.
Gary Valan (Oakland, CA)
He controls the narrative on his campaign and the press and the TV "news" people just broadcast whatever he throws up. If the newspaper and the TV interviewers held his feet to the fire on his various pronouncements and chased facts and throw it back in his face and don't back off his bull**t, then maybe the voting public will get a more realistic picture of his bizarre Presidential candidacy. Meanwhile, I am not holding my breath, I could die.

The politicians in the House and Senate have created a new definition of "craven": Republicans who put themselves and their jobs above the good of the country.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Smart people are the only thing fools really fear, but fools do enjoy the advantage of numbers.
Michael Hogan (Georges Mills, NH)
I was listening to NPR a few weeks ago and they gave him a pass on another, more recent and less offensive lie, but a naked, blatant, deliberate lie nonetheless. The issue was his tax returns, and they repeated his claim that he was prohibited from releasing them because the IRS is auditing them. This long after the IRS had stated publicly and unequivocally that he was completely free to release his tax returns to whomever his shriveled little heart desired. And did NPR mention that? No!! They simply said, "Trump maintains that he is prevented from sharing his tax returns by an ongoing IRS audit" clearly implying that there may be some validity to that claim. Thank heavens someone is finally doing their duty. Now keep it up. The nation's soul is at risk.
Robert Eller (.)
It's time to refer to Trump, his enablers, his supporters, as barely legal aliens.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
They are symptoms of a terminal illness of nations: nihilism.
Kat (Birmingham, AL)
Trump is getting all the coverage because the outrageous statements he makes entice the news media. He is sucking all the air out of the election season. Why not give Hilary Clinton more space for sane ideas and minimize the coverage of Trump.
Garbo (Baltimore)
Just another in the basket of deplorable lies.

The press/media has been complicit reporting: 'why half the lies he tells aren't true'.
Harvey Canefield (Chennai, India)
What the NYT ediorial board fails to recognize is that Mr. Trump is such a powerful man that he can bend the fabric of reality. He was not lying when he said President Obama was a non-citizen, nor was he lying when he said he never said that and that the controversy was started by Hillary Clinton.
Virginia (Cape Cod, MA)
How can anyone possibly think this man should be the US President, let alone enough people to actually make him the nominee for one party, let alone enough to make this race so close. Is there something in the drinking water?

Something is very, very wrong.
Steve Bolger (New York City)
Maybe only lonely crackpots answer the telephone calls of anonymous callers, which includes all the pollsters.
Tuvw Xyz (Evanston, Illinois)
Trump has as much right as any Tom, Dick or Harry to believe, or not believe, and to expose his ignorance in anything -- be it someone else's birthplace or the Earth's orbit around the Sun. What is truly inexplicable, how can such a man attract so many supporters in a nation that values democracy and freedom?
Who knows, perhaps we shall see yet some mythical explanations of Trump's popularity that is attributable to changes in cosmic radiation, Earth's magnetic field, global warming, etc.
Anna (New York)
Let's call it what it is: Stupidity!
Steve Bolger (New York City)
The US is not and never was a democracy above the level of New England town meetings, and freedom is a synonym for anarchy here. The whole concept of equitable negotiation of contracts as the basis of liberty is evidently too sophisticated for the majority to grasp.
J. Dow (Maine)
And the Trump minions don't even blink, parroting his non-truth of the moment, that somehow Hillary had started the birther nonsense. In act of group amnesia they now sound as though it had been Hillary for the last five years accusing Obama of not being made in the USA. Trump is correct about one thing, he could quite literally stand in the middle of Times Square randomly shooting people and he wouldn't lose his followers.
Paw (Hardnuff)
Somehow the Trump supporters do not care whether Trump was propagating a lie, they agreed with his motive, which was & remains to discredit, distract & disparage.

These are the people who brought us Dubbya because he's who 'Joe Six Pack' wanted to have a beer with, & nearly brought us Palin because she winked at them through the camera while fondling firearms.

They cheer the Don entirely because they're bigots (it's simply not possible to support an obvious bigot for office if they weren't unapologetically unreformed bigots themselves), seething in their unrequited hatred & rage for 8 years (or is it 150 years, ever since Lee surrendered).

Can't fix bigots. & as Ron White said (who knows this demographic intimately) 'you can't fix stupid'.

This is a civil war between two profoundly antagonistic ideologies. The side that lost the battle in 1865 is still at war, while the progressives have progressed.

It's perfect for the in a way, a northern racist basically carrying the flag for a red-state confederate fantasy that what's mucking up their america are all those 'uppity' other americas that won't step off the sidewalk. Red states see the Don as their license to 'stand their ground' & fire away with their white rage.

Birtherism is fair game in this war. Facts were never part of the Southern Strategy.
JMM. (Ballston Lake, NY)
My thoughts and requests:
1) It is now obvious that for almost half the electorate it does not matter what lie, insult, broken law or hypocrisy "clings" to him. They don't care.
2) It's obvious that the tribal nature and lust for power, I.e., "R" after his name means more to his fellow "R's" than this country. And - see above - they can now fully support their nominee because no one cares.
3) For the rest of us, please no more articles on Trump's outrageous statements. It is food for his black soul.
4) Write only about the issues and proposals.

So, what does the NYT think about Hillary's free community college proposal?
michaelmoyeberl (biloxi,ms)
My Father, who incidentally worked for the Times in the composing room for 30 years, once gave me invaluable advice on dealing with people like Trump. Now I will pass it along......
Irving Berl once said, " You will never change a bigots' mind. That is how he was raised, he will not change. But you can make him shut up. "

The surprising thing for me has been to see how many other racists have come out to support him. We must out vote them.

To my mind the most dangerous part of this ugly scene has been Trump's attempts to incite violence against Hillary Clinton. Just as it is illegal to yell Fire in a theater, Trump should be arrested and charged for these statements.

I hope the Times will press on with it's reporting on Trumps' financing from Russia. I think what Trump admires about Putin, is the way he has made it impossible to challenge him for looting his own country, and killing his own countrymen.
WestSider (NYC)
"...his vicious insistence that President Obama was not born a legitimate American citizen."

Powerful words from the editors, too bad they weren't uttered back in 2007 when the birther movement started. And why not tell us who started it, if it wasn't Hillary Clinton's campaign. Who were behind it? Surely, NYT has the resources to get to the bottom of it.

Over the weekend we heard young African Americans weren't that into Hillary Clinton, the alt-Right thingy didn't do the job either.

What to do? Jennifer Rubin, a prominent member of the Never Trump movement had the bright idea to resurrect the birther question to confront Trump. Why? Because the only way Hillary Clinton, who is sinking in the polls, can win is by making Trump unacceptable and the media is happy to oblige, and here we are, another 24 hours spent without discussing issues facing the American public.

If you are interested in why Trump is the nominee, and why Hillary Clinton is sinking in the polls, watch this debate from Intelligence Squared. Hillary Clinton's side is represented by the losers of the debate. It's well worth your time.

America will delegitimize itself as a democracy if it votes Trump to the presidency.
fastfurious (the new world)
What we need now is for all the middle of the road Republicans who won't support him to come out and do it publicly.

Would it matter if bunch of people traveled to the Bush library in Texas and we could see Bush 41, Bush 43 and Jeb appear with Mitt Romney, Colin Powell, Ted Cruz, Susan Collins, Rob Portman and any other congressman and women, mayors, governors and judges who want to throw in all come together and hold a press conference saying they will not vote for Trump and urging any concerned Republicans not to do so.

Would it help if there was a vast public gathering of these folks in opposition to Trump? It's worth a try. Anything's worth a try.

What are they waiting for?
don (Texas)
Trump only deserves two more questions in his entire sorry career, and if he won't answer the second one he should be done, at least as a prospect for president of the USA.

@When did you become convinced that Barack Obama was born in the USA? What convinced you?
David (New York)
It's a relief to see the Times finally use the word "lie" (as opposed to "false statement"). I think it is time for the paper to print the clear and crucial sentence, "He lied."
R.C.R. (USA)
One can only hope he "delegitimized" his candidacy, as if it needed more delegitimization.
amkretsi (Cincinnati OH)
One thing is clear from watching this campaign (and this comments section), Trump the Bully, Fool & Liar has a remarkable ability to get under the thin skin of the Left
Dan (Philly)
Yes, people are aghast that such a lying, bigoted oaf might become president. That is a rational reaction, if you know what that word means.
Michelle (Boston)
Thin skin? In the last 8 years Was there a more egregious offense against any politician and his family than this birther nonsense? We are perfectly right to be outraged, although The President himself never reacted in anger or bitterness but with grace and humor. Unlike whiny Donald, who tweets playground insults at anyone who dares criticize him.
Doug (Virginia)
The 'Left?' How about ANYONE who holds a presidential candidate to at least a minimal standard of decency, knowledge and capability?

He is an affront to many conservatives too. The ones to whom conservatism means something other than hate, money and fear.
David R (Kent, CT)
None of this matters...to the people who want him for president. Those people want Trump to say things that feel good to them to hear, period, because it legitimizes their own feelings of anger and fear. They don't care if the statements are lies or not.
Anon (Atlanta, GA)
I would bet that if the Trump supporters were asked about yesterday's declaration, they would say "He doesn't really believe it. He had to say it." And therein, I suspect, lies the truth.
Lt (Dallas)
He doesn't tell lies. He lives in an alternate reality, the one that is shaped by his corrupt business practices, enormous ego, and wile character. He is a stain on America.
Jimmy (Greenville, North Carolina)
To be honest what difference at this point in time does it make?

Let the voters decide who tells the most lies.
Don P (New Hampshire)
Mr. Trump has again and again duped the NYT and its fellow print, TV and cable media into printing his outrageous statements as if it's newsworthy.

Mr. Trump is a carnival barker, selling magic elixiors, and tickets to freak shows. Mr. Trump has no convictions other than the fact that he knows he's great; a sociopath!

And yet for almost a year, the media has provided Mr. Trump a legitimate platform for his lies and bigoted rants. The media treats each of his anger filled, childlike outbursts as if Mr. Trump is actually saying something credible or important.

Mr. Trump's nonsense is all a diversion, a trick, a carnival act, all designed to take the voters attention away from the fact that Mr. Trump is an empty suit, knows nothing about governance, foreign policy, national security, government finances, creating jobs, healthcare, public education or anything else that's important.

Most sadly is the fact that the media, including the NYT keeps printing and airing the outrageous Trump statements because it sells newspapers and attacks advertisers.

We all love to watch the train wreck!
finder72 (Boston)
My God, it's just infotainment. Americans don't need show business. They need news. Trump will do anything to get daily central control of the non-news news media, and he is very good at it. Helped along by Jeff Zucker, NYTs and others. What the NYTs needs to do is constantly expose the lies of conservatives. For example, how they waste tax revenue on useless investigations. Or, how they started the Middle East wars leading to tens of thousands being killed. Or, how they keep pushing lies like lower taxes create jobs. Or, how they have failed to pass a single piece of legislation in over four decades to create jobs. For them, it's all about the ruling corporate elite and their business interests. How about detailing how much and from who each person in Congress gets from corporate special interests. Write about these issues, and not what a loud mouth loser is saying. You've Been Trumped! Watch the documentary before this idiot gets elected.
Chris (Charlotte)
Trump certainly liked bringing this up to poke at Obama over the years - in some ways I think he enjoyed it the same way bigfoot researchers enjoy searching for the mythical monster - you know you'll never find the evidence but the chase is so much fun, And while Clinton surrogates certainly whispered about birther and a host of other things about Obama in 2008, she didn't. So he owns it.
However, no matter how much the Times and other liberal publications talk about it, it won't make a dent in a race that as it stands today is too close to call. In fact, the stories about the Clinton Foundation gobbling up a final round of $250k checks will prove to have more importance voter-wise in OH, PA, VA, NC in the coming weeks.
AJ (Noo Yawk)
When your 3rd wife's an immigrant who faked a college diploma on her website,
and who stands accused (falsely? even so, let's give it the years of rope the "birther" story got) of having been an escort,

sooner or later,
you've gotta admit that Americans born in America are American, even if they happen to be America's first black President.

If the NYT editorial board is talking about it, news stations are talking about it, talking heads are talking about it, and I'm talking about it, there is nothing Trump is doing to "deligitimize" his own candidacy. He is sucking up all the media attention, commentary and conversation, to make himself THE news every single day. That's what people who get elected President do, no matter how duplicitous everything about them may be. Such strategy, especially in the web age, has an unfortunately successful history that, as is the case for such people, spells disaster for our country and possibly the world(!) if its "natural" but obscene denouement occurs (it's George W. Bush to the nth power redux). Citizens of America, rise up! Leave the guns at home, but send this creep back to where he belongs, in the basements of the buildings he's trying to build with other people's money, while cheating them out of their fair share.
Belle (Seattle)
I have high hopes that the moderators of the three upcoming presidential debates will ask Trump tough questions and make him answer in detail. Trump is already setting up his defeat by saying that the debates will be rigged. What a thin-skinned crybaby!

Trump's birther crusade has been utterly shameful. I hope karma gives him a swift kick by turning the USA map blue on November 8th.
Rebecca Hewitt (Seattle)
I just returned from a business trip to Hong Kong to list a flat in Quarry Bay on the market. The timing wasn't great for me, as I'm just about to leave for an extended stay in France. But the people who follow real estate and my advisors all implored me to do this now. Before the election. Because there is huge fear out there all across the planet that a Donald Trump presidency could very well bring about a worldwide crash of the real estate market, and everything else. He is poison.

Yet we have this frighteningly large basket of deplorables (yeah......they are deplorables without doubt) who think it would be "entertaining" (I'm talking to you, Richard Luettgen, and your equally vacuous cohorts in Trumpism) who think it would be "greatly entertaining" to elect an ignoramus with a brain disorder as leader of our democracy.

So, I will be following this god-awful election from Paris, reading the political "reporting" of the NYT on my iPhone. (I refuse to call what's been in these pages so far in this campaign journalism.) Please Hillary, divert this Titanic away from the looming iceberg with astounding brilliance in the debates. Because if Trump wins, I think I'll just move into that flat in Hong Kong myself and wait out the next 4 (8?) years over there. Or hey...stay in Paris. I guess I'd find myself knowing what it's like to be an illegal alien. But bet I'd have quite a bit of company joining me.
siren (SF bay area)
Your headlines need to reflect his wild instability more and less of the direct quotes. The truth is his instability is the underlying problem, his words are the outward manifestation of his disorder. So headlines that repeat him allow him to hear it again and again, like oxygen to a person with grandiose sense of self. Your headlines are playing into his deranged thinking. Focus on his deranged swings that are the real point.
loveman0 (SF)
One of your commentators provided a link to a Politico article from 2008 stating that the Clinton campaign at that time was the origin of the "birther" story. I also remember something about "white" working women in PA needing to vote for Mrs. Clinton. While Trump may take the cake for the most and repeated lies, which of these two is capable of the most calculated lie?

Meanwhile, where is the candidate that is serious about doing something about climate change and other serious issues? Or electing a Democrat majority in the House. You had a writer a few days ago that pointed out the Republicans may have gerrymandered themselves into a position, where this is a distinct possibility. Are the democrats aware of this? You are now covering California (wherever that is) every day. How about covering all those House races, too? At least for the duration of the election.
Koobface (NH)
Trump is great entertainment, but only if he loses.
BKB (Chicago)
Wow! Finally the NYTimes is beginning to wake up to the fact that this is not a normal election and that Trump is not a normal candidate, deserving of respect, consideration and journalistic even-handedness. It's time for the Times to stop beating up on Clinton by recycling the lies, distortions and exaggerations of Trump and the GOP. A Trump presidency would place us all in the gravest danger and the Times and every other legitimate media outlet has a moral obligation to stop pandering to him and to start pounding on him for his lies, his refusal to release his tax returns, his business dealings with Russian oligarchs, his bankruptcies, the way he stiffs his contractors--the list is endless. It should keep you busy until election day.
Trevor (California)
It's obvious this won't sway Trump supporters. The ones who thought he was pushing the birther conspiracy for political reasons from the start will write if off as something he has to do for the general election, and they never cared that it was a lie anyway. The others who actually believe the birther bull will assume he's just lying to win the general election, and won't care because they understand it's what needs to be done.

Nobody can say facts matter to a Trump supporter. When emotions are so strong facts just blow past people like a swatted bug. Trump knows this, and he riles up his supporters to keep the emotions flying high and the message delivery lubricated. It’s a group of drunk people who are angry and just want to be angry at something, elevated to a kind of meta-emotion, where no one cares what anyone else is saying, as long as they’re all feeling the same way. Another shot on me! Don’t worry about the hangover, trust me.
Robert Eller (.)
These comments are all too polite, simply because they are written in "printable" language.

But then, the New York Times insists on "printable" language, rather than appropriate language.

One of the biggest problems with covering Trump is that mainstream publications like the New York Times insist on "respectable" language when discussing despicable individuals.

This inappropriate "respectability" enrages me. I more than suspect that it enrages others as well.
Joan (Wisconsin)
Thank you, NYT, for this full-throated reporting of the truth about Trump! He is solely responsible for nurturing and spreading the lie that President Obama was not born in the U.S. He took no responsibility for his egregious actions in inventing the lie, but rather he told another lie by stating that Hillary Clinton started the lie. Trump also failed to apologize for his despicable actions. And, finally, you made it clear that Trump does not have the character to be president of the U.S. Hopefully, Paul Ryan will develop some character and renounce Trump as unfit to be president.
Keep up this good work--------stopping the sanitizing of Trump and reporting the truth.
ABMIII (WASHINGTON CROSSING, PA)
This is nothing more than a concerted and desperate effort by the Clinton campaign and its backers of the corporate media led by the NY Times to stop the surge of Trump in the polls and nothing else. They, the media ignore and forgets that in 2008 Clinton was spreading rumors of Obama, using the race card and the religious card, i.e that he was a closet Muslim.
The NY Times completely ignores and censors anything to do with Mrs. Clinton's health, a very legitimate concern. A cover-up is taking place to shield and hide the seriousness of Mrs. Clinton's health, at least, after election day. but, eventually, the truth will come out. The public record is there for anyone to see that there is something seriously wrong with Mrs. Clinton, yet the NY Times ignores and is complicit in hiding and obscuring the truth.
Not surprisingly, just about the entire political section is dedicated to attack, smear and ridicule Trump. It's total war season.
Whether you like it or not, the headline news is Hillary Clinton's illness and who will replace her. This is inevitable. And I'm sure the DNC is already forging a plan for this almost certain eventuality when coupled with the fact that she is losing at the polls. Political calculations nervously assessing Clinton's failing health. Oh, what to do . . .
Clinton's entourage of handlers and aids are starting to look eerily like Howard Hughes'
Of course, this comment it's likely to be censored. Isn't it?
Michelle (Boston)
Who orchestrated that ridiculous press conference and issued the outrageous press release? Trumpolini and his enablers did, because they actually wanted news coverage. All press is good to them.
Bogara (East Central Florida)
Both candidates stink like limburger smothered in decomposition. We have other choices. Yes, we do.
falken751 (Boynton Beach, Florida)
President Obama holds the highest office in the United States. He has a law degree from Harvard Law and was a former editor of the Harvard Law Review. Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton holds a law degree from Yale University. Despite the legal background of the President and former Secretary of State, both seem to be winking at the serious legal issues surrounding the former Democratic National Committee Chair, Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Bruce (Tampa, FL)
I watched Bill O'Reilly's show last night to hear his take on this topic, and O'Reilly said words to the effect that now that Trump has stated that Obama was born in the U.S., this matter is now behind him. As if one unapologetic sentence after 5 years of perpetuating this outrageous lie settles the matter. It proves that Trumps followers (as O'Reilly is) are as delusional as Trump himself.
T.L.Moran (Idaho)
Donald Trump delegitimizes the entire GOP, which supports him. Like stray dogs following a garbage truck to its latest dumping ground, the Republicans glance cagily from side to side hoping no one sees them gulping down hungrily whatever latest garbage spill churns out of his bottomless bin of fetid thoughts and rancid personal ambition.

I honestly can't seem to find a single person in even my red, red state who is willing to admit they're a Republican voting for Trump. He is a deep well of poison and while the GOP leadership apparently continues to hope that steady small sips from his fountain of untruth will, like Rappacini's daughter, make them immune to his toxic instability, the ordinary GOP voters around here have apparently decided to steer clear of the whole mess. Or at least, not to admit in public that they're sailing on a ship of fools, and worse.
Arch (California)
I was exhausted.

For over the last year, I have called Trump the Birther.

My exhaustion is now transformed into exhilaration (get the Hillary word play?).

Trump is an unrepentant Birther, and must be held accountable until he apologies for his lies.

Then, the Birther must apologize for having claimed to see on TV thousands of Muslim-Americans cheer as the Towers fell.

One would think that suggesting the assassination of a presidential candidate would invoke more press outrage than a case of pneumonia.
Ike Welch (Atlanta)
The New York Times and the rest of the Mainstream Media are fully responsible for Donald Trump. For whatever reasons, they have allowed this Pathological Liar called Donald Trump to be a legitimate contender for the Presidency.
They have treated us with false equivalence with respect to the two candidates instead of saying the obvious that Donald Trump is a walking talking Scam Artist.

Trump's whole campaign is built on lies and repeated provocations urging violence - violence at his rallies, violence at the polls when the 'rigged' election gets 'stolen,' saying his supporters who beat up minorities in his name are "passionate," his repeated disgusting hints someone could or might murder Hillary Clinton, "I'd like to bust him in the face" provocations.

Trump's menacing, dishonest and exhausting. When will we be free of him?

He doesn't have anything else. Lies and violence. His campaign is as bankrupt and dishonest as his casinos.
Jean (Nebraska)
Is this a story about Trump or is it about the press? So astounding that this went on for 15 months and now the press gets it? Was the hotel expo and more lies a bridge too far? Most of America figured it out inspite od the media. Except for enough fools who could win the election for the fraud.
Carol (California)
Another Trump day, another dozen lies. I guess I should get used to it. If Trump gets elected, come 2017 it will be all lies, all the time. Gee, that sounds like a 20th century science fiction novel.

What I never understood is that back when it was McCain vs. Obama, one of the presidential candidates was undoubtedly born *outside* the United States, which would disqualify him from ever becoming president.

However _that_ was never the topic of discussion.

(McCain was born on a US military base in Panama. Sure, being born to US soldiers on a US military base surely makes you American, but if that base is *outside* of the US shouldn't that at least merit some discussion if the opposing candidate was born *inside* the US but people doubt it?)
Stuart (New York, NY)
African Americans seem to be the group most united against Donald Trump, and that's been the case since the beginning of this campaign. I wonder if they are also troubled when a newspaper refers to his campaign as "bizarre" and "absurdist." His supporters are run of the mill racists, and we shouldn't be surprised therefore that the largest police union just endorsed him. I wonder if African Americans are mostly united in what they think of that, too.
Eddie Lew (NYC)
It seems more and more that the United States' great history is fizzing out after 240 years; it's not being conquered by foreigners, it's being destroyed by the carcinogenic Republican Party and its handlers, the Kochtapuses and its malignant tumor, Donald Trump. Is anyone paying attention?
gregory (Dutchess County)
Such a sad and dangerous little boy is Donald. His funny game yesterday morning did not go as planned and he got panned. So in the evening he lashed out at the press and his opponents and threatened to put Hillary in the cornfield a la the Twilight Zone. He is in his own reality television nightmare now and there is No Exit.
Guy Walker (New York City)
Pete King, Louis Gohmert, Darryl Issa, John Mica, the list goes on. The woods are full of Donald Trump Jr.
To me they are not liars, they foster misconception. They propagate confusion. That innuendo and rumor become recognized as worthy of time and space on a page is alone worse to me than all the Donald Trumps out there.
When Paulson and Bush announced to the world on Dec.8, 2008 that The United States of America was spiraling into something that was to prove worse than the Great Depression and a bailout was inevitable, Jeff Sessions, Orrin Hatch and Chuck Grassley went to work on Tim Geithner the minute he took to the reins declaring him an enemy of democracy and economics. Doesn't anybody remember how bad that was? Donald Trump changes his mind that the grass is not purple, it truly is green and republicans are silent. The same republicans who chastised Tim Geithner and President Obama when they began to dig us out of the great American nightmare that was Bush, Iraq and set a precedent for more deceptions and Trump.

Patti Solis Doyle, who was Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager in 2008 until the Iowa caucuses, admitted on Friday that a Clinton campaign staffer had, in fact, circulated the Birther conspiracy theory that Barack Obama was born outside the U.S. and therefore potentially ineligible to serve in the presidency.
Doyle made the admission on Twitter, as she responded to former George W. Bush spokesman Ari Fleischer. Fleischer said that Clinton’s staff had spread the rumor. Doyle said that was a “lie” — but admitted, in the same tweet, that she had fired the “rogue” staffer who had used email to spread the Birther conspiracy theory.
Rogie21 (NJ)
Trump’s latest birther lie wasn’t just an affirmation that he’ll continue to be relentless in attacking Clinton—facts, as always, be damned. It also was about creating yet another distraction to dominate the media cycle. And in that cycle, neither Trump nor his surrogates will be asked:
-about his refusal to reveal his tax returns
-about the actual details of his charitable donations (despite damning evidence that it's mostly fake)
-about his suggestion that the US illegally seize Iraqi oil, emulating what Saddam tried to do with Kuwait's oil, leading to the first Gulf War; and
-about why he lied about Clinton not having a child care plan, rather than trying to prove his plan is superior.
Why hasn't Trump been directly challenged on any of these issues? He is a liar, con-man, racist, political lightweight and more....but what he is best at is manipulating the TV media, who seem to be willing dupes.
Mike B. (Cape Cod, MA)
Mr. Trump's candidacy has become a vaudevillian act or, to be more precise, an act of comic lunacy. How anyone can continue to take this candidate seriously after all that has been revealed about this man's total lack of character is astonishing. His candidacy has come to resemble something more akin to a comedic act, although one of a very, very dark and toxic nature.

We've heard that Trump is essentially a "showman". In that context, I came across a simple definition of "vaudeville". It reads as follows: "stage entertainment consisting of various acts (as performing animals, comedians, or singers)."

Well, Donald Trump's candidacy has indeed taken on a very dark, comedic quality where he consistently engages in verbal gymnastics where he dances around the truth when cornered, opting to sing a different tune (set of lies) when it comes to "facing the music" before his political critics.

So, I would like to coin a different term for Donald Trump's presidential, theatrical act. Rather than use "vaudeville" to characterize Trump's campaign, I think a new term that truly captures the essence of the Trump spectacle would be FRAUDEVILLE, pronounced "FRAUD-E-VILE".

Yes, fraudeville much more accurately conveys the tone and tenor of his act in total, namely one that is both fraudulent and vile. So, yes, Donald J. Trump is nothing more than a "Fraudevillian" -- someone not worth our time or consideration...someone to be tossed in the garbage pail of political history. Amen.
Emile (New York)
For months, the Huffington Post has had it right by ending all articles about Trump with these words: "Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
Rob (NJ)
"Meanwhile, former McClatchy Washington Bureau Chief James Asher tweeted Friday that Blumenthal had “told me in person” that Obama was born in Kenya."
Gee who would Mr Blumenthal be connected to? The Times would never look into this story. Sure the birther story is completely false, but don't think for a second that it wasn't looked into by someone connected to the Clintons in 2008 and if there had been even a shred of anything that pointed to the possibility of it being true they would have gone with it. The Times entertains me with their daily attempts to derail Mr Trump and their increasing anxiety as the polls turn his way. I am not a supporter but clearly the attempt to portray him as a racist bigoted monster by the Times and the Clinton camp is not helping. All that does is set the lowest bar possible for him. And his opponent has yet to effectively come up with any positive reasons why anyone should vote for her, just more shrill denouncements of Mr Trump which fall on deaf ears outside of her own camp. Without a change in strategy seems to me that the outcome is beginning to look quite grim for the Democrats.
tdom (Battle Creek)
Remember folks, he's just be nominated. If he's defeated this just becomes a nasty footnote of our political history. But If he's elected, it will define us forever. This has become like a dream of lost corridors and impending terror.

If it isn't at least 80-20 Clinton-Trump on election day, it will just prove what a deplorable condition this country is in.
Virginia (Cape Cod, MA)
I heard Chris Matthews, and others, describe his "admission" as sounding like a hostage reading propaganda given to him and forced to repeat by his captors. I could not agree more. He read it like a petulant child being made to do something by his mom he really did not want to do but if he didn't, he would not get dessert.
That is also why he had to mitigate what he didn't want to say with a Trumpism, namely another vicious lie, to try to divert attention away from his first sentence should anyone get it stuck in their heads that Donald Trump had made a mistake or been wrong about something.
How will a President Trump ever be able to be told he's not correct about something, or that his notions are not good, or wrong. I can't see anyone daring to tell him so, not without risking being fired or at least pilloried by this disturbed man who cannot tolerate being wrong or criticized. A cousin of this is that Trump also seems to have no interest in facts at all, no need for them. How can the US possibly have a president who has no need for reality or facts? In fact, didn't we in George W. Bush? How did his tenure end? I think we need to remember that.
The Observer (NYC)
I noticed the "I don't want to, I don't want to" little hissy fit, especially when he said "I finished it". This is a family affair, old man Fred was a racist, Donald is a racist and little Donald Jr is a racist. Old man was a liar, son is a liar, grandson is a liar. Old man was a ruthless business/con man, son is a ruthless business/con man, grandson well on his way to being a ruthless businessman/con man. Why is anyone surprised at all?
Jerry W (NYC 10025)
Lets see where do we begin? In no particular order there is of course climate change, N Korea getting closer to having a nuclear arsenal, China's aggressive trade policy and actions in Asia, TTP, income inequality, Putin in eastern Europe, ISIS, and the middle east in general just to name a few. Instead we are talking about birtherism, Dr Oz, deplorables, HRC lies etc. Will there be a serious exchange on important life sustaining issues or do we just bury our heads in the sands surf channels and kick the can down the road? If the media is going to stop this silliness they have to begin by asking serious questions and expecting serious and informed answers. Until that happens i'll watch reruns of Star Trek thank you very much.

Fact is Hillary's campaign did start questioning Obama's background long before Donald Trump did.

Plouffe said in a statement: “On the very day that Senator Clinton is giving a speech about restoring respect for America in the world, her campaign has engaged in the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we’ve seen from either party in this election. This is part of a disturbing pattern that led her county chairs to resign in Iowa, her campaign chairman to resign in New Hampshire, and it’s exactly the kind of divisive politics that turns away Americans of all parties and diminishes respect for America in the world," said Plouffe.

Right. You're referring to the photo of Obama in a turban. And Hillary had nothing to do with and took the proper disciplinary measures you yourself mentioned.

And then Clinton became Obama's Secretary of State.

Do yourself and your country a big favor on November 8: since your vote counts way more than my vote due to your place of residence, do not vote for a lying sociopath.
pianopal (St. Louis, MO)
Lots of people, including those in the media, don't get it. Trump is a genius at playing us. Remember he is the Kardashian candidate, saying outrageous things that even he probably doesn't believe, that draw attention to him and make everybody forget the other candidate. If Hillary is making a wonky policy speech one day, laying out a sensible tax reform plan, Trump will announce that he is about to change his mind about the "Birther" issue. The media swarm like flies to flypaper, breathlessly awaiting both the announcement and the announcement of the announcement and then disseminating the "Breaking News." Boring things like substance and the truth get lost in the scramble. "The Show" is so much more fun. Trump has been playing his enablers (a public with mass attention deficit disorder and a media frantic for ratings) like a virtuoso.
kicksotic (New York, NY)
To a point, yes.

Until the "big announcement" is anything but and the Media, which does care -- which HAS to care -- about what the Public thinks of them, gets tired of being played. And then they turn on Trump, begin asking tough questions, begin demanding proof that what he's asserting is true, begin insisting on knowing who these "people" are that Trump keeps referring to, begin calling him out for his lies, and, realizing he's the boy who cried wolf, begin ignoring Trump's latest "big announcement" knowing it for the free campaign commercial it is.

The debate -- and I suspect, after being held to the same tough standard as Clinton and making an utter fool of himself, Trump will only do one debate -- should be the beginning of the end of Trump's tenuous legitimacy as a Presidential contender.
JB (CA)
A dumbed down U.S. is not a great country.
The press and the debates moderators must keep Trump on the path of addressing their questions and call him on it if he doesn't!
I'm not betting on this happening!
jack black (North Carolina)
trump, the ultimate con, is the media master. You got this right. And all the media care about is getting eyeballs on their 'story' because that is what advertisers pay for. He is plastering the trump brand globally with the presidential campaign. Shame on the RNC.
jdevi (Seattle)
Narcissists like Trump never take the blame for their errors - and he simply re-directs it. If only there were electoral college penalties leveled for conjuring such lies and mis-directions...
sdw (Cleveland)
The editors of The New York Times face the same dilemma confronting all other responsible journalists, when it comes to Donald Trump. Do you spend time and ink pointing out the latest outrageous behavior of the Republican nominee, thereby giving him the attention he craves and which, to advance his campaign, he feels he needs?

We keep waiting for “the final straw” when Donald Trump crosses a line which affronts and angers his ardent supporters. The closest Trump came to that probably was with the Khan family and the Gold Star Mothers or, perhaps, the thinly veiled encouragement to his “second-amendment people” to shoot Hillary Clinton. Another close call may have been Trump’s admission of a cozy attraction to Vladimir Putin.

As to any false step or miscalculated lie by Trump, however, his supporters have the same problem as their hero: a very short attention span.

Trump’s birther lies about President Obama never came close to being the final straw, even though the concocted claim was vile and should have taken Trump out of serious consideration for the White House. Trump’s core group of supporters love the birther libel, which is why Trump could not make a complete break with the lie yesterday.
Glenn S. (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
I can only imagine what the rest of the world leaders make of America look like with a Presidential candidate who can make such asserstions and be taken seriously by the American press.
Mark (East)
You're accusing him of lying now? This is probably the only time he's told the truth.

Clinton staffers were circulating "the muslim picture" in 2008. David Plouffe flat out accused Hillary of circulating the photo and called it "the most shameful, offensive fear-mongering we've seen from either party in this election".

Clearly Trump's surpassed that, but c'mon, it's the one time anyone can go back and see that Trump's not lying about what Clinton did.
Smoky Tiger (Wisconsin)
I believe Donald Trump was bounced out of The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. I don't think Trump ever graduated. I would like to see Trump's grades.

The NYT is fun! Three, count 'em three separate articles/editorials about Trump's press conference, each one more faux-indignant than the last. Whew! At least there's nothing else of any importance happening today that's worth talking about, like Hillary's dive in the polls, or maybe the increasing indignation of the American public against their news agencies (are they linked?). Trump may be a strong drink of water with funny hair but he's the first non-politician to come along in decades that speaks straight to us and actually seems to be intent on helping Americans.

Still, I understand that that sort of thing may not be your cup of tea. Go ahead and keep printing screeds; we'll try to listen.
Bayou Houma (Houma, Louisiana)
It's not a lie that the question about Obama's birth came up in Mrs. Clinton's attempt to prevent him from becoming our first African American President. That's a documented fact. Although she abandoned the issue, and she never raised it as Trump tried to do, she went on to challenge his campaign on other grounds in a deeply bitter, sophisticated, and negative campaign. (Recall her contempt for Obama's "nice speeches." Her husband Bill's not-so-subtle racial appeal to white southern Democrats in the 2008 South Carolina primary....)
Mrs. Clinton's denial that she intended to keep her official emails her personal secrets is not, as she claims, a "mistake in judgment." It's a lie.
Ronald Williams (Charlotte)
Between now and election day, the media will do what they started doing only yesterday when some called Trump a "liar" etc. Before yesterday, they called Trump's lies theories and other neutral names. Some of them finally got a pair and hopefully a significant number of others will follow.
Joe in Sarasota (Sarasota, FL)
Deplorable is too mild a word, disgust is much closer. Trump has proven yet again that he has no moral compass whatsoever. From spreading fiction on President Obama's place of birth to his desire to put his opponent in grave danger by disarming her Secret Service detail, this cretin has totally disqualified himself as a member of the human race much less Presidential material.

No sane person wants another political figure struck down by a bullet by a deranged person. My preferred outcome for Trump, and I won't dignify him by putting Mr. in front of his name, is a loss in November and a retreat back into his sick life. Many thought Sarah Palin was a "whack job". Wrong, here is the "father of them" and living proof that "money doesn't care who has it". May God help us here in the USA and everyone around the world.
M (Pittsburgh)
Strategic omission of information is the most frequent method the NYT employs to deceive its readers, and it counts on them staying within the bubble of its pages to get their news, so there is little danger of it bursting. John Heilemann, considered the official biographer of the 2008 campaign and no right-winger, confirmed on Morning Joe that the Clinton campaign started the rumor that Obama was a Muslim, which is a piece of the Birther Myth, the full myth being that he was a Muslim born in Kenya. Reggie Love has written about Obama confronting Clinton about her campaign spreading these rumors. We know of Mark Penn's memo urging targeting Obama's lack of "American roots", which was meant to suggest he wasn't American while being too cowardly to directly say it (a Trumpian tactic). So while it is axiomatic that Trump is a liar, to exonerate Clinton at the same time is deeply deceptive. Why not acknowledge her shameful part in this and then blast Trump? Because there is a campaign to be won by a paper that takes advertisement from the Clinton campaign and displays it prominently on its webpage. Talk about being bought.
Pvbeachbum (Fl)
I definitely believe that Obama was born in the United States, but it has been widely reported that his college application to either Occidental (?)or to Harvard was made under the guise of a "foreign applicant." and it is strange that he will not allow his college transcripts to be released.
Pierre Markuse (NRW, Germany)
"Mr. Trump delegitimized his own candidacy instead."

Really? I would say he never was a legitimate candidate. A legitimate candidate has real policies. Policies he or she can explain to people. Trump just has outlandish ideas, extreme opinions, and many, many, many, tremendous policies we will never hear about. Because they don't exist.
Richard Green (San Francisco)
The part of Trump's rotten little two-step that bothered me most was the sotto voce "I finished it. you know what I mean." I don't believe for one minute that he meant that he was putting it to rest, but that he was making yet another dog whistle to his most rabid supporters by reminding them that he "finished it" by forcing the public humiliation of President Obama to actually release that long form.

That "I finished it" was his disclaimer to his faithful that the following statement that our President was a U.S. citizen was just a sop to his critics.
Dan Mills (Lewiston, ME)
So, let's see... a political leader who encourages violence or worse against his political opponents, incites violence against those who disagree with him, blames citizens of his country who are different from him for his followers' problems, proposes building walls to keep people out, mandates patriotism. Up until this year, I would have said that sounds like East Germany or North Korea.
Welcome to the U S of A in 2016.
tdom (Battle Creek)
What Trump and the birthers did is analogous to the white cop pulling over the well dressed black driver, with the new car, in a white neighborhood and asked for his papers, while refusing to say why he was stopped. What Trump has now done is analogous to after holding that driver for a half hour or so, with the patrol cars lights flashing and all passing traffic seeing his humiliation, is the cop wishing the driver to "Have a nice day" while smirking.
sharon ehrhardt (madrid)
The deplorables will be gleeful that Trump stuck it to the black man but hopefully, decent non-deplorables will take note of what kind of jerk their candidate is proving himself to be and vote ccordingly.
David Blum (Daejon, Korea)
Trump is a cynical, sociopathic opportunist. He says what, in his rather demented mind, what he thinks his supporters want to hear. But Trump scares me far less than his followers, who want to hear very toxic things.

I don't know how America got here. The economy is not great but it's not Weimar Germany with hyper inflation. That's the real question: how did we get here? Just from a black president? From years of angry and paranoid talk radio? From Fox News?

I dunno. But if Trump is elected, I ain't hanging around. I guess the comedians would have fun with it. But I kinda take my country seriously.

The Birther Lie is just one of many contretemps that Trump has masterfully used to catapult himself in to the limelight, stay there and enabling him to be poised to grab the presidency.

The brilliance of Trump's hucksterism and con game in business is on a scale that the likes of Bernie Madoff, Igor "The Match King" Kreuger and Charles Ponzi would be right at home with.

In politics, Trumps ability to captivate and motivate the masses is far outshining previous luminaries such as PT Barnum, William Jennings Bryan, Father Coughlin Huey Long and Joe McCarthy. His audacity has brought him closer than any other huckster to actually grabbing the presidential brass ring on the merry-go-round of American politics.

Trump truly is birthing a new political era here in America. And should he actually win the presidency, Trump in office will be a transformative event - good or bad - that we have not seen the likes of since the election of Lincoln in 1860.
John K (New York City)
All true. But notice how nearly every day, Trump is the story, with the main news about HRC being her latest response to Trump. So he's leading the dance, crazy and horrible as it may be. Don't look at this an election. Look at it as a contest. In an election, people vote for who will be the next President. In a contest, they decide who "won." It sometimes seems to me that that is what is going on, and I find the thought just horrifying.
RJ (Brooklyn)
"It's not my fault," whines Trump. "Hillary made me lie about President Obama's birth certificate all these years. She forced me to lie but I finally helped President Obama by acknowledging the truth that I just found out this instant. Or maybe yesterday. In any event, Hillary Clinton completely controls me and made me say those lies for 6 years. That's why you can trust me to be a good and honest President. I wasn't lying. I was just a puppet saying the things my puppeteer, Hillary Clinton was forcing me to say."

Yep, that's the kind of leader the basket of deplorables admire.
Wm.T.M. (Spokane)
If Trump were a publicly traded company, how many of his supporters would
invest some or all of their retirement savings in it? Right! The stock would have long ago crashed and the company would be in the death spiral of bankruptcy.

The NYT needs to call a meeting of the editorial boards of the 500 largest daily's in the country and they all need agree to and start deconstructing this lunatic candidate before something really really bad happens to the USA and our planet. Life and death time in America, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Iris (Massachusetts)
It's been quite a hoot watching the media fall all over themselves trying to talk about anything but the health or lack thereof of the Democratic candidate. Barack Obama will be out of office in January, and "at this point, what different does it make" where he was born? No one cares, although years later, historians can rehash the whole thing. Right now we have a president to elect, and obvious tactics to avoid the real issues cover the media with shame.

All of the people who appeared in with Trump in his free ad for his latest commercial property, including the Medal of Honor winners, should be ashamed of themselves. They disgraced themselves and their military careers by vouching for this con artist. The medal has been dishonored.

This latest Trump publicity stunt is just further proof that in the right-wing universe facts do not matter. Trump tells conservatives what they want to hear, and they respond accordingly.

This is very sad for America.

Polls show that more than 50% of Republicans have believed that President Obama was not born in the USA. Even more believe that he's a secret Muslim.
The numbers vary and who knows if polls are really reliable, but I wonder if there is any overlap with that "basket of deplorables" that got so many exercised.
JABarry (Maryland)
The birther lie is thinly disguised racism. Trump is a thinly disguised racist. He IS deplorable. But he is much worse than that.

Last night Trump invited violence against Hillary Clinton. He asked his followers to imagine an attack on Hillary Clinton's life. He suggested his followers would/should murder her if she were not protected by armed secret service guards. This outrageous invitation for mob violence was greeted with mob cheers. His mob was filled with evangelical Christians who have swapped Jesus for Trump. Trump is deplorable and his followers are deplorable. Period.

Trumps followers are deplorable because they are harmful to America. They cannot distinguish the truth from Trump lies. Or they see the truth but support his lies anyway because they are consumed with amazing hatred of Hillary Clinton. Trump and his supporters are dangerous. More than deplorable, he and they are native terrorists. If you suggest violence against another candidate you are turning American politics into a version of Russian "politics" where opposition is assassinated or imprisoned. Trump has already said that if he loses in November it will be because the election is rigged. He was telling his mob that they may have to take matters into their own armed hands. Trump is ending America's history of peaceful transition of power. Violence in American streets if he loses in November. He is a terrorist.

This election cycle is deplorable. Trump is deplorable. Trump's mob is deplorable.
LIChef (East Coast)
The news media is finally using the "L-word" to describe what Trump is doing, but it may be too little, too late. Scary forces are at work outside our little bubble of sane and rational Times readers.

The Washington Post cites research going back 30 years claiming people such as Trump supporters simply ignore facts and don't allow those facts to influence them. Then, I saw a video in which students at Texas Tech -- potential voters -- didn't know who won the Civil War or who was our Vice President. (One thought these were "trick questions." They did know who was married to Brad Pitt and what TV show Snooki starred on.)

I wonder if this is how the Roman Empire ended.
Larry (Morris County, New Jersey)
What do we do in life when dealing with a liar on the scale of Trump? We call them out, over and over, until they realize there is no gain to lying. We and the media have to do the same with Trump. And with his few supporters here excusing and repeating his lies. Those commenters are liars too. Please mention that to them at every opportunity.
Michjas (Phoenix)
The highly moralistic view judging Trump's actions pretty much misses the point. Trump is not a liar. He is just indifferent to the truth. And the purpose of all his actions is not to slander Obama or Clinton but to promote his personal benefit. He had only one thing to gain by challenging Obama's citizenship. The publicity that followed and his ability to benefit from it tested the viability of his candidacy. Anybody talking about lies is not measuring Trump's actions by his own moral code. For Trump the question is his effectiveness If you want to understand his motives that's how you judge him. And since he's the on running for President that's what is most important.
DCScribe (Washington, D.C.)
Trump is our worst national nightmare.

He is an unabashed huckster, who revels in his role as mischief-maker-in chief and who falsely claims he is not a politician as he attempts to slither his way towards the ultimate political prize of Commander-In-Chief.

Just as Trump tries to "Play The Media" ("Leave 'em stranded on the tarmac! If they catch up to the campaign they might spread The Truth! Lie and tell them there will be a press conference with a "big" announcement and then give them the ol' Trump-Switcheroo: Let's tour my $850 a night hotel where almost none of my supporters could afford to stay!) he gets up every morning, smiles with his cyanide-sweet huckster-shaped mouth and practices his newest lies in the mirror as he gets ready to "Play the American Public."

We may wring our hands and wonder where some (uneducated, desperate, foolish) members of the the voting public have gone so very wrong as to endorse this buffoon, his continually evasive children, and his professional team of Fascist spin-doctors.

Remember your deep, well-founded distress as the weeks unfold. Speak with your neighbors, your co-workers, your acquaintances. Vote early if you can. And on election day, offer to drive elderly, disabled, or other members of the voting public to the polls. The only way we win is if we soundly defeat the national nightmare that is Trump.
saywhat? (NY, NY)
As Trump continues to debase the political process and turn it into one more marketing scheme for his enterprises, there is only one effective antidote---hitting him in the wallet. It is time to start a new campaign, involving every person who finds Trump and everything he stands for repugnant, to refuse putting a cent into anything Trump--clothing, hotels, tee times, etc. Turning his assets into failures, as in Atlantic City, may be the only effective way to shut him down.
David in Toledo (Toledo)
Trump would never have become the Republican nominee without his first volunteering as the Supreme Leader of the Birthers.

In 2011, when he tested the waters for a Presidential run, he needed followers. Was he going to attract a large number of not-rich "less educated" whites because he was a Manhattan billionaire? Would he appeal to a nominally evangelical demographic because he was a libertine unfamiliar with the Good Book? (To a surprising degree, "yes" to both, but that's for the psychologists on another day.)

Many of these "less educated" whites had economic grievances stemming from deindustrialization and the tax policies of Reagan and Bush. Many also disliked The Other (Barack Obama), who was being regularly demonized on their favorite talk-radio. Encouraged by Tea Partiers, they blamed the backside of the Great Bush Recession on President Obama.

How could Donald Trump place himself at the front of all these angry people, born to be followers? All his life, Donald had practiced the art of the "con." This would be his biggest. He could scoop up the loyalty of these "less educated" whites by leading this movement to delegitimize Barack Obama, contending he had been born in Africa. His followers could only post stupid insults on social media; he, Donald Trump, could appear on national television and tweet to millions.

He gained the confidence of his marks. He took his reward. Now he has abandoned them on this issue, as he would on all others.

This audacity to lie has taken Trump campaign so far, so this tendency will continue further. It is not that his supporters do not know that he knows, yet they still prefer him.

Maybe once the wall of his lies becomes higher than the depth of great American political divide, his supporters could begin to ditch him.

Perhaps, Clinton campaign could help a bit on a pivotal issue to his supporters, allay their fears about not appointing non-ideological, non-partisan, and widely respected judges.

What has become alarmingly apparent is that a large portion of the American public has no concerns about Trump's lies, distortions, and unrealistic promises. As much as his words and actions continuously outrage moderate to liberal news outlets, educated voters, and academia the deplorables (Clinton has it right) relish his antics. He represents the revenge they feel for always being the underclass and their avenger for every slight they have experienced real or imagined. Part of Trump's game is to get the media's goat. This is sport for him. The more the media screams and complains the more Trump is endeared to his base. Make no mistake, if Trump wins this country domestically will be even more split and chaotic than in the 60s.
NayT (NJ)
Birther lie is only one of the several issues Mr. Trump has successfully tried to build up his base. Lets call spade a spade. This is a reflection on the societal norms. Can we not conclude that a good 15 to 20 percent of the American Society harbors same racial prejudice, as Mr. Trump. Its these 15-20 percent of the population which has given his unconditional, fir, unwavering support. Is it not therefore reasonably correct to put this fraction of his supporters in the "Basket"that the secretary Clinton was talking about? Racism is a sorry state of American Political Reality.

Classic method to avoid accountability for a lie being exposed - divert attention with a new lie.

While we are busy trying to chase down the evidence of the untruthfulness of Trump, the issues of the nation and the world lay by the wayside.

Will the debate moderators waste time asking about obvious Trumpian lies or will they focus and ask the candidates about substance - as unfair that would be to Trump.
bob west (florida)
Trumps latest nonsense about Hillary disarming her security detail is the sign of a very disturbed man! The fact that a large portion of the country supports him and his nonsense is the scariest part. If someone on line proposes threats like this, they are brought in for questioning. He needs questioning by mental health experts!
Rita (California)
Legend has it that when George Washington was a boy, he chopped down a cherry tree. When confronted by his father and facing certain punishment, he famously said, "I can not tell a lie. I chopped down the cherry tree.". The boy grew into a man of integrity and honor.

Trump would have told his father that the tree was not a cherry tree, that it wasn't chopped down and that he saw the neighbor's kid chop it down. And would smile at how clever he was as he watched the neighbor's kid get punished for his crime.

Trump is a man of no honor or integrity. Truth and factual accuracy are for chumps in Trump World. He has no understanding of the job he is seeking and no desire to learn. His conduct is vicious and deplorable. And he encourages his supporters to be vicious and deplorable. And, yet, Republican leaders still support him.
Cesar (Costa Gravas)
Anyone remember 2008? That's when the Clinton Crime Family circulated the photo of an Islamic-garbed Barack Obama, complete with an unflattering caption. That alone should inform us of the depths to which this vile woman and her equally unctuous clan will stoop to in their avaricious quest for kim jong-un style adoration and stalinesque-like power. As the tool of the elite, their corporate cabals and the financialists who have wrecked our economy, her claim on our support is ludicrous on its face and an insult to the rational.
ACJ (Chicago)
Not that I think Sec. Clinton should adopt this strategy, but, in a campaign with Trump, it is becoming a contest of the big lie---I am certain that Trump is a rich target for all kinds of rumors---which actually might turn out to be true.
Lenny (Pittsfield, MA)
He did not actually repudiate it. He winked his eye as he said yea its not true wink wink.
In effect, he said he would say any words to try to appear to be a way he and many of his followers know he really is not.
He repudiated nothing.
He is a extremely dangerous man.
He would make a extremely destructive leader/ In fact, he already is a destructive leader.
God help us if he is elected.

Stop covering Trump's lies. They are his way of using the press to get free coverage while he distracts fools from thinking about the issues in this election.

The press needs to hold him accountable. The only record of Trump's qualifications is his tax returns. Stop covering his ridiculous stunts and focus on the truth.

#NoTaxesNoPress
Miriam (Raleigh)
Sure. Actually the problem is that the press has NOT been covering Trump's utterances and stunts as the lies they are. Nice try though deflecting since Trump is never going to show his taxes, even junior said so.
Anna (California)
The problem still is that his supporters don't care what he says. They are bent on vengeance for having a black president. No matter that a white republican president left the country in chaos.
Iced Teaparty (NY)
Let the purging of the birthers begin: from writers at the Wall Street Journal (Roger Kimball) to Fox News to all of the "conservative" , i.e. lying Republican news outlets.

And the roaders, those who went along with it: almost all Republicans in Congress over the past 7 and a half years.

How many Republicans stood by the honor of the President when Trump and his like defiled Obama by denying that he wasn't born here and therefore was not a legitimate president.

What is a proper penalty for this infamy?

People care calling for an apology from Trump. Trump should take his own life. That's what an honorable man would do for such perfidy.

And the hangers on, the Roger Kimballs, the Fox News, the Republican members of the house and senate? They should all lose their jobs.

And Trump properties: they should be appropriated and much of the revenues used to fund an alternative to Fox News on television.

The honesty and integrity of Republicans have been shown, through the birther incidents, to be not worth the paper they are written on .

And as for the Donald himself, history has its eyes on him and has reserved a place for him next to Benedict Arnold, Aaron Burr, and Vladimir Putin.
Capt. Penny (Silicon Valley)
I regret to point out that the Editorial mentioned Clinton 3 times in association with the lie.
"Don’t Think of an Elephant!" wrote George Lakoff.

Trump scams the media again and we citizens will suffer for it.
Karen (Ithaca)
To all those now blaming Hillary for the "birther" controversy, interesting it took Trump several years to think up his lie that "Hillary started it". Really? If that were true, he would have been touting that for years, instead of he and his surrogates just now grudgingly "admitting" the truth, that Trump was actually Born In The USA. Anytime the media's questioned Trump on this directly, he says he doesn't talk about it anymore. Then some primitive brain synapses must have come together, "I'll blame it on Satan Hillary, all right!"
Truly evil.
Bunbury (Florida)
Trump should be confronted every minute of every day with his lies and should never be allowed to change the subject but must be forced to return over and over to the subject of his lies. Perhaps eventually he might see what a wicked person he has become and he might seek penance. If so I suggest that he take off his shoes and walk up and down this nation calling out at every door for forgiveness.
Once he has begged forgiveness from all Americans one by one then he can start on Mexico and do the same thing.
We also must not allow any politician who has in any way supported this monster or has failed to call him out on any of his lies to escape similar treatment. They all must be hounded out of office.
Just in case you are wondering, Yes, I am steamed and you should be too.
DbB (Sacramento, CA)
Despite his campaign's recent attempts to steer him into the mainstream, Donald Trump reminded us again on Friday that he is pinning his hopes on voters who are indifferent to, or incapable of grasping, the truth. A more cynical campaign has never been waged for the presidency. Sensible voters of all stripes simply cannot allow it to succeed.
Sam D (Wayne, PA)
Whether Trump tells lies or not isn't really the issue. The issue is that there are many people who know Trump lies and that he would be a disaster for the nation, but they just can't bring themselves to vote for Clinton. It's almost as if they believe the right-wing propaganda that she is a liar herself, and that because the Republicans (and some liberal newspapers, e.g., the NYTImes with Whitewater, a headline that said "“Criminal Inquiry Sought in Hillary Clinton’s Use of Email," etc.) have been after her with both barrels. But the accusations are, for the most part, false. The Times had to take back those stories.

Don't hold your nose and vote for Clinton, for goodness sake, be enthusiastic about it. Anybody who comes through that gauntlet and still has grace plus some really good policies (funny how we forget those policies) deserves a vote for President. And Obama says she is the best choice and the person most qualified to be President. He ought to know.
carl bumba (mo-ozarks)
Why are we revisiting this silly, old story right now? Trump did not reopen the "birther" claim. This is nothing but a political tactic instigated by the Hillary camp to discredit Trump for a past transgression and to force him to contradict his own base, 40% of who still somehow believe Obama was born outside the US. The propagandists behind this even suggest that Trump, himself, (and not a Washington Post journalist) instigated this - and Hillary is now doing her part with the moral outrage. No offense meant, but anyone who is embracing this issue now, at this point in the race (in lieu real issues affecting the welfare of billions of people), is a tool.
ed (honolulu)
Sound and fury signifying nothing. The Dems and the liberal media are turning up the heat out of desperation. The problem is they've already played the race card too many times already. It's losing its effect. Trump had to know the hysterical reaction of his opponents that would follow, so I would say he's thrown the race card right back into their faces. Now where are they going to go with it?
Miriam (Raleigh)
Seriously, you think that donald admitting to lies, slader and just plain meaness is throwing back the race card. He was right, he COULD stand in the middle of 5th avenue, shoot someone and get away with it.
Mike (Peterborough, NH)
That's five years that the press allowed Donald Trump to continue this lie and the dozens of others that followed. The press gave him the stage for the free publicity he garnered, without forcing him to produce any evidence of his lies and outright bigoted claims. Yes, Matt Lauer brought all to the forefront, if there is anything good to come out of his outrageously inept handling of Trump a couple of weeks ago. The press still has a chance to make-up for their making him the Republican candidate for president. Ask the questions and don't leave until you get answers. It takes guts, though, so I expect more Lauer-like episodes until you have coronated that idiotic candidate, Donald Trump.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
No presidential candidate in history has ever provided the American people with a more honest and open display of the paranoid style of thinking that he intends to employ while governing this nation. He is a mentally unstable man.
gratefolks (columbia, md)
Maybe this is more of a question for the, Ethicist. In all seriousness, how does one maintain a relationship built on honesty with a Trump supporter? If, after this, a person defends Mr. Trump's actions how can I genuinely believe this person to be one of any integrity?
