Murray was the better player. But not by much.

Raonic has made remarkable strides in the last year. He may have reached his peak. Hard to see where he can improve. His win over Fed was impressive.

If Djokovic was on the other side of the net the result would have been different. But he wasn't. Good on Murray for taking advantage of his exit.

It wasn't easy.

Congratulations to Andy Murray, truly an example of hard work and dedication, on and off the court. And by off the court, I am referring to what must have been an excruciating rehab after the back surgery, both physically and mentally. How difficult it must have been for this young man to consider the possibility of never getting back to the peak of fitness required to compete at this level of sport. And yet, and yet, here he is, holding the Champion's Trophy again. And good on Andy for being smart enough to bring Lendl back onto the team. Although comparisons between eras are futile, I see a distinct similarity between Novak and Ivan's games--I'm old enough to remember when Lendl was an irresistable force in men's tennis through the sheer power of his athleticism and precision. So who better than he to advise Murray on how to beat Djokovic, which, this surprising tournament aside, has to be Murray's goal?

Congratulations to Andy Murray and the UK!

Well deserved! I'm sure winning in your home country is an amazing feeling!

I don't think anyone was thinking about Brexit at Wimbledon yesterday!

Andy Murray is playing a beast. The man sure can move and his return is excellent. Excellent match. And so entertaining. I love watching Andy on the court talking to himself - no doubt trying to pump himself up. I hope Andy can surpass Djokovic and be the number one player by years end. The way he's been playing this year he deserves it.

The British needed something to cheer them up after the Brexit vote and tiny Iceland defeating them in Euro cup.

Murray brought it home for them. This was a terrific win for Murray who has been marginalized by Djokovic. Milos had nothing in the tank after the 5 set win over Federer and Milos had never been in a major final. This combined with Murray's vast experience and great conditioning meant a rather boring gentlemen's singles final. But this was anything but a boring moment for the the British as they deal with huge changes ahead.

Murray is the Wimbledon champion again, but he's not as enjoyable to watch as many other players on the men's tour. As long as things are going his way, he plugs along and gets the job done. But as soon as things go awry when he falters, or his opponents show flashes of brilliance, he slips into the rude, bratty Andy we know only too well. And what was up with all that nastiness directed at his box, in front of royalty and all, even when he was ahead? Murray doesn't have the class to reach #1...

Watching Wimbledon this year was a pleasure, as always. And especially now, seeing people of all races behaving like civilized, sporting human beings (except Serena Williams, who everyone is crowning the Greatest and a Wonderful Human Being; she was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct at this Wimbledon; she's fine when she's winning, but quite the opposite otherwise; she could learn a lot from her intelligent, poised, funny, dignified and unfailing sportsmanlike sister) was heart-warming. It's too bad it isn't a microcosm of the real world.
David Stehle (Cazenovia, NY)
Big deal, she smashed a racket. If she had smacked a line judge with it I could see you point.
ppdoc (Austin, Texas)
One of her white opponents was also fined, btw. Game changer for your insightful worldview analogy, I guess. Go Serena!
Yvonne May (Pittsburgh)
Congratulations, Andy!! You were great!!

In my day, to win a Grand Slam meant to win in a single season all the major opens, which only the greatest have ever done. That's what grand slam, a term from bridge means — to win all the tricks in a hand.

The hyperbole of sports reporting, verging far too often on adolescent hysteria, nestling cosily in the pocket of the marketeers and the shameless merchants of spin, does no service to the game of tennis or any other.

And when Scotland secedes from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Poms won't even be able to claim that Murray is a Brit.

I find it hard to imagine what Andy Murray must now mean to the town of Dunblane, given what happened there in 1996, especially as he was in the school on that terrible March day when Thomas Hamilton murdered so many. Dunblane's name was in danger of only being associated with tragedy but Andy has somehow alleviated that. What a wonderful achievement.
Bruce (Spokane WA)
Well done, Andy. But don't forget --- next time you see Querrey, you owe him a beer :-)
pam (usa)
I was glad to see Murray win again. In a way it was like a first Wimbledon win, because the last win was for the UK. And he's more fun to watch now. He's reached a higher skill level and is more emotionally mature. Good on you Andy. Good luck at the US Open. But if Nadal is healthy, I have to pull for Rafa!
Nancy (Great Neck)
Terrific tennis, I was rooting for Serena and Andy and both are home.
Paul King (USA)
Murray is playing Djokevic tennis.

Meaning he can do whatever he wants with the vast majority of his shots. The mastery of the craft is on the highest level.

Raonic has his service game as his best weapon but stroke for stroke in rallies, he is not at that peak level yet.

I believe there was only one Murray break of serve combined for both.
Pretty amazing.

It's Murray time in men's tennis.
Assuming he can control his temperament in the top matches with the top players.

Seems to be doing better.
A good guy I think.
rehartten (Lebanon,NJ)
What a 70% effort. He played rally ball throughout, hitting mostly short, bunted volleys back to Murray, cracked very few forehands, and virtually tanked the breakers. There was none of the brilliance he showed at the end of his win over Federer, none of the determination. Then he told the press he had done all he could have, but that it was just not enough.
EC Speke (Denver)
It's good to see a UK athlete rise into the upper echelon of international sport, particularly tennis. He brings a modicum of the old but entertaining McEnroe dourness to Wimbledon also, if he doesn't rise to superbrat's levels of misbehaviour. Good going, the past 10 years have been all Federer, Djokovic and Nadal, way to win one for the British Isles.
G.E. Morris (Bi-Hudson)
cheers...Andy..well done...The Brits were actually smiling today.
Dennis (Vermont)
Yes, Murray can be a hard guy to watch with his on court behavior and he sometimes annoys me. I see him as being so tormented with internal pressures as well as external pressures from the top players and the British expectations. I just can't help but root for the guy. I love his game and he comes off as a very likable guy off the court. For me, it's wonderful to see him succeed . He certainly deserves it. I hope he wins at least a couple more majors.

All Best to Andy Murray - Milos Raonic will win his slam.
At least in Gentlemen's singles we did not see a Serena Williams doing her rope a dope, pouty, take time to order a pizza delivery, between serves and the more than contentious screams at her opponent - yes, at her opponent. Serena dug deep into her mind game - gamesmanship to win one.

Novak was rained out of the tournament.
Roger just tripped once.

Fist-pump and "Come on" -
NYC Father (Manhattan)
"Rope a dope?" I don't even think you understand what the expression means. At least in terms of how it applied to Muhammad Ali who took shots to the head the were so powerful Norman Mailer described them as, "the sound of a baseball bat hitting a watermelon."

You clearly know as little about tennis as you do about boxing.

Serena Williams is the greatest champion to ever touch a tennis racquet. She dominated Kerber. There was nothing even close to a rope a dope moment.

However, just to clear things up for you Paul - because clearly you need a little help here - Serena was pausing because of the wind. You know - the thing that made her skirt jump up and down even though she herself wasn't moving at the time.

Did you notice how Andy Murray kept pausing while he was on serve in the first set? That was because of the sun. You know - the shiny yellow ball that makes a lot of light and hurts your eyes if you try to look at it directly.

Was Andy Murray a rope a dope too? He also pouts. A lot.

Or perhaps, Paul, the only dope in this equation is the author of the OP?
Paul Rauth (Clarendon Hills, Illinois)
Moops..."the greatest champion to ever hold a tennis racquet" ... Next you'll write how much you respect all the commentators on ESPN and the greedy and smug - in Tennis Magazine---Chrissie.

It's the racquet, the sun, the wind, the noise, the cameras, the clothes, the bags and the money.

It's all about the money

Great comment NYC Father! Couldn't have said it better myself.
Sherr29 (New Jersey)
Congratulations to Andy Murray. He played beautifully today and deserved the victory. He's not the most charming man on Earth but he certainly seemed like the happiest most relieved man on the planet today when he won the final point. The pent up emotions burst out of him which is unusual for this very taciturn man.
I'm certain he made many in the UK (not just his fellow Scots) proud today with his victory.
Nick (England)
Just a note to the author of this article, the only Downton Abbey Brits in Britain were sitting in the Royal box, and at Downton Abbey of course, oh no, wait, theres no such place, it's fictional. Rule Brittania, pip pip, cheerio and all that!
Vineet (Bangalore)
Well done Andy! Andy's movement across the court to take all kind of shots is amazing.
kk (California)
Congrats Andy! He brought the much needed cheers to the Brits:) He must be one of the best returners of serve after Novak - Raonic managed only 8 aces. Good to see newer challenges to Novak. Good times for tennis continue. This was a great tournament. Cannot wait for US open. Hoping for Sam Querry, Roger, and Novak to do better.
Nick (England)
Much needed cheers to the Brits? what does that mean? oh, i get it, you think we are all miserable because nobody loves us anymore. let me tell ya friend, we're used to that.
Stephen Merritt (Gainesville)
For all Monty Python fans, the spirit of Angus Podgorny is smiling down on us. One more strike against alien blancmange space invaders, because a Scotsman has won Wimbledon.
Jesse Marioneaux (Port Neches, TX)
Raonic needs a few years ! No offence and hate but big serve and net play just isn't enough ! You have to be a complete player! and Murray has been supreme touch today ..solid play ..and I think he is now the best returnr of the serve ..and more consistent .. ..congratulations Murray
Robert Broughton (Guanajuato, Mexico)
It's worth mentioning that Murray and Raonic were not that far apart today. There was only one service break in three sets.
Owen Crowley (New York, NY)
That's right. Though Murray won in straight sets, the last 2 were tie breaks. Once Novak gets back, (and maybe Rafa) Murray will be back where he started.
joe hirsch (new york)
A great player but hard to root for. There is nothing endearing about Murray. He is a sullen presence on the court.
Deborah (Summit NJ)
Can't agree. Murray is a great person, a great player and a great champion. He has brought his game so far and has so much heart. I enjoy rooting for Andy!!
George Haig Brewster (New York City)
What do you want? He's a Scotsman.
SJ (London)
Aw, you don't get Andy.

You're loss.
