There is a part of me that likes him. I can't help it.
Siobhan (New York)
The lack of self-control Mr Weiner displays is kind of astounding, especially given his penchant for self-analysis.
Patricia (Washington)
Who on earth can take this bizarre guy seriously?
Why is the NYT wasting it's time and ours on such a man whose sheer presence in the public domaine is an insult to every fiber of our intelligence and humanity?
Please stop giving him ink and just let him and his self-compromised wife fade into obscurity!
Horace Dewey (NYC)
I do not trust the motivations of those who feel anointed to deliver self-righteous condemnations of Weiner's behavior.Did he hurt others he loves? Yes. Did he hurt himself? Pretty much a self-immolation, I'd say. Hurtful, perverse, self-destructive behavior.

Having said that, can someone tell me what these modern day Torquemadas think they are adding to the quality of the moral universe by continuing to pile on a man so completely down and out for the count? Whose lives are improved -- and how is society made more civil -- by the sarcastic, mean-spirited moral entrepreneurs who are always so anxious to set up the public scaffold?

Civility and maturity is demonstrated by one's actions, not by conspicuous and suspect performances of moral fury.

Leave this man alone already.

Mr. Weiner was punished by voters not for what he did, but for not cleaning up his act Time One. He obviously needs tons of help. Americans like contrition but not when it is totally insincere. Remember Gary Hart and Monkey Business?
Andy Jones (NYC)
to quote Sophia Petrillo - the man is a scuzball
David Binko (Bronx, NY)
It was Weiner's handling of the sexting controversy, the cover-up, that was so absolutely atrocious and showed his true character, not sexting itself. He has an incredible high level of arrogance.
William (Westchester)
People stand in judgement because the behaviors of JFK, Clinton and Martin Luther King seemed passionately human, by comparison. And because self-righteousness and envy occupy the mental landscape reflected in the media. Looking like a young Lincoln and with his apparently wonderful wife by his side, he appears the man boy caught playing with matches. I hope he will forgive himself and use his considerable gifts to good account. I'd like to believe that by forgiving him, people will assist that effort.

What a shame. A guy who could've been a far better mayor than Bloomberg, for all the citizens, not just the 1%.
I felt conflicted in not voting for him. His actions were beyond stupid, maybe pathological, but harmful only to self and family.
Yet, that poor decision making and his inability to control himself would've been a dangerous quality for a mayor to be.
In the end, we'll never know. And that is the shame, mostly his.
Steve Singer (Chicago)
I still recall an article about Weiner's neurotic foibes I read in the Wall Street Journal several years before he destroyed himself. While a Member of Congress he threw cellphones at his office staffers whose work didn't meet his "high standards". These standards presumably included sending digital images of his crotch to complete strangers. After that contretemps broke I lost all interest in him.

I feel sorry for Huma. She deserves better.
Andy Jones (NYC)
she does have better - she has HRC as her mate
Nicole (Falls Church, VA)
A smart guy who worked for the people of NY. He didn't ruin our economy, you get to keep your job when you do that. He didn't sell arms to our enemies, again, you get to keep your job when you do that. Our society persecutes people for small indiscretions, but doesn't have the will to go after the real offenders.

Tragic, and profound loneliness that tossed his pregnant wife into an emotional tsunami. It crossed my mind a few times that Weiner was fearful of becoming a father for reasons unknown to him and others.

I wish them all peace. Especially, Huma and her young son.
Ed (Montclair NJ)
It appears that Huma has her hands full these days. She has to manage the expectations of two fairly dysfunctional people. Hillary by day; Anthony by night. Problem is that even she can't be two places at once.
Zenster (Manhattan)
Our sex scandals are indicative of how pathetic we have become:

John Kennedy had Marilyn Monroe.
Bill Clinton had waitresses and interns
Elliot Spitzer had to pay for it
and finally Anthony Weiner, lost his job for sexting like a school boy.

Five percent. Norman Mailer. Dostoyevsky. Wonderful connection. Made my morning.
Paul Easton (Brooklyn)
I remember a few decades ago there was a periodical called "New York Review of Sex and Politics". Too bad it didn't survive long enough to publish Anthony's selfies.

Weiner must be judged an avant guard candidate but not terribly far in front. American politics has long since merged with show biz but until this year the voters have generally continued to regard it as a serious business. Their requirement for "gravitas" caused their political tastes to be more conservative than their tastes in entertainment. Now things are changing. Maybe if the Weiners did a reality show he could make a comeback.
