Sexism in Advertising: From ‘Mad Men’ to Today

I'd like to ask Jane Maas if she has noticed what proportion of women who do hold powerful positions in business, politics and academia are childless; whether she's compared that to the general population; and what conclusions she draws from those two numbers.
For women, it's often a choice between family and career. For men, it's not.

Feminism has not "simply run out of steam" but support for feminism certainly has. Ms. Maas seems to feel that the battles have been won and that if women don't get ahead it's because they choose not to. Maybe the hundreds of women she's heard from were not getting the same amount of pay as the men to work all week-end.

Hey Jane,

Those women that don't want to run the show, it may be because their husbands are not stepping up at home. No one can do it all. Men or women. Patriarchy is alive and well in the world, Jane. Open your eyes!

the irony is that the subject is advertising, and commercials. which we all universally hate, declare to have no credibility, and consider harmful to our minds. but it's so serious when it's convenient. we want equal opportunity to demean the population and kill the culture and propagandize the people and mislead and defraud. yes, you go, get that bag of gold.

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia,
Really? Nothing much has changed? Look around. Read Jane Maas' response above yours. It's about the fact that women want the perks and the authority but they don't want the consequences or the bad that goes with it.

What do women want? Who knows. Not reality that is for sure.

Ms. Maas says, "Feminism today has simply run out of steam." I beg to differ, Ms. Maas. The radical religious right and corporate backlash against women in the 1980s caused many women to grit their teeth and play in the boys room in order to gain experience and earn a decent living. Many women put up with unspeakable insults and mental and physical abuse to stay in the game. No more. Women do not want to play the "boys' game. Women over 60 are appalled that their inalienable rights, given to them by their creator, are under more serious attack today than ever and they - and the men who love them - are speaking out forcefully to bring awareness to those who don't realize the damage being done. NOW is the time to finally pass the Equal Rights Amendment to OUR United States Constitution that says NO law shall be passed in America that discriminates against women. NO law. It's up to US to make it happen.

News Flash: Sexism isn't dead.... but Hillary has helped women make great strides.... and will continue to do so....

You can "civilize" men and women in civilization, but you can never take the "animal" out of either one of them. That's why "sex" sells. Get over it.

Well, it's Texas. So it doesn't mean much for the rest of us.

It amaze me how some people strike back (especially white men) when they face even more and more evidences of unfair treatments in every parts and levels of society : "it's their fault" a few good old stereotypes turning the reality of the "white man's world" and social constraints, which too often forces women to give up on things, to "some female personal choices". Simply put : when arguments get too sophisticated for them to reply back, they just get back to the most rustic weapons, the good old wooden stick...

I worry a lot about the future of our societies. it seems like rare are those willing to simply a acknowledge they may not be necessarily culprits but perpetrators, not necessarily thief but benefiting from others conditions... on the other side, zealous "white men" defending "minorities" may be even more threatening : saying they do feel "more like women" after finally acknowledging how they are treated on a daily basis, they are subtly denying that they are part of the problem, to the point they act like the "white knight the poor and fragile women awaited to save them from the devilish clutch of sexist bad guys"...

Just like pointing out Muslim countries for their bad women's right: if they are at 2 on a scale of 10 of gender discrimination, we certainly aren't that 5 on that scale...

But still, in virtually every television commercial the authority figure or expert is a woman (or child) and the man is the fool. Check it out.

And if that's so, it's usually because a man created the ad and approved it since men dominate the ad world, especially creative departments.

So true.

Sexism is sexism regardless of gender.
Pontifikate (san francisco)
It's mostly men who are writing and approving these ads --not women making fun of men.
