Aroldis Chapman Says He’s ‘Happy and Anxious About Helping the Team’

The Times today mentioned that Miller had an ERA of 0.00 (or close to that now)... and the Yanks are disrupting HIM by adding this guy?

This is yet ANOTHER reason why this life-long Yank fan bailed... players who are either actively loathable (ARod) or a revolving cast of no utterly interest to root for (too many to name) ... a GM signing guys like this ... management including the likes of Randy Levine .. and oh yes, a fake Stadium with astronomically-priced seats!

Baseball is supposed to be FUN, not aggravation and some reality TV show!

You don't just accept a 30-game suspension and forfiture of nearly $2 mil because you're a misunderstood Latino ballplayer. You're a liar and a jerk and you know you did it. Let's just hope he doesn't crank another one against the young lady one of of these days.

Eight gunshot holes in the wall is, almost by definition, a problem. Stay tuned for more - it's coming.

What hypocrisy. If Chapman were not a baseball star he would be sitting in jail.

We don't want him.

Denial reigns supreme. Sadly I don't think we have heard the last of violence issues with Mr. Chapman. NYC is the big leagues. Trouble will likely find him.

The Yankees are in last place for a reason and Mr. Chapman may will prove to be a continuing distraction for this band of overpaid prima donnas.

What's the use of forcing someone to see psychiatrists or enter counseling if his attitude is that he did nothing wrong and the accusations against him are based on racism? Maybe it would have been better to force him to appear before groups of abused women in every city the Yankees visit and in NY and let him learn that what he did isn't something "normal."
And if a player makes racist comments about his own group, is that all right? If a Catholic player made comments about a papist conspiracy or a Jewish one antisemitic comments, would it be considered all right because of their backgrounds?
If Cuban ballplayers don't seem to think the laws of the U.S. apply to them, perhaps its because they really don't. Other immigrants from Latin American countries are illegal, even ones fleeing for their lives, unless they've gone through a lengthy visa process whereas those from Cuba simply have to reach the U.S. The players also are free agents from the outset so they can negotiate the highest salaries and don't have to go through the draft.
Imagine if all the players from Cuba were considered part of all those immigrants Donald Trump and his supporters want to force out of the country. I'd sure bet the wealthy team owners would get him to change his position pretty fast

Ahhh yes, the pride and class of the NY Yankees.

Am I the only one who thought the picture of Mr. Chapman that accompanied this article look like a mug shot all decked out in Yankee Blue?

While I don't condone domestic violence, I'm concerned here about the lack of due process. Chapman, as far as I know, did not do anything wrong in the workplace that employs him. And law enforcement chose not to prosecute him for his alleged crime outside of the workplace. So why is Major League Baseball playing judge and jury?
[email protected] (Chittenango, NY)
Uncontrollable action, including domestic violence, I suspect, has all the marks of addiction. Mr. Chapman shows no signs of accepting the reality and harm of his behavior. Mr Sabathia confronted his addiction last year in an exemplary manner. It appears to me that Mr Chapman has not yet 'hit his bottom'. And what of Ms Barnea? Victims of domestic violence seem also to be in a (temporarily) helpless state. I hope for recovery for all, including us fans who may be addicted to spectator sports. Denial is very powerful.

This signing was a mistake as the Yankess will soon find out. Andrew Miller deserves to be the everyday closer, not some loser who is still not accepting responsibility for his actions. No one told him to fire his gun like an idiot. George Steinbrenner would have never gone for this. Cashman's glory days are over and Joe Girardi needs to go.
NYer (NYC)
I was with you until you brought up Steinbrenner. This is EXACTLY the sort of thing HE did. Ever heard of Pascual Pérez?
Reader (new york)
Exactly someone I want to support. A guy with a Rolls Royce and Lamborghini who terrorizes women. The Yankees with amoral players and crazy stadium ticket prices are just gross.
Steve (New York)
And don't forget that it was our tax money that went to pay for the stadium in which they play. But of course if the city and state didn't use it for that they would have wasted it on things like schools and affordable housing.

The use of the word "marooned" to describe Mr Chapman's assignment to the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa is offensive. More so because he commutes to the "squat, cinder-block" complex driving a choice of one of 4 of the most expensive cars in the world.
Mr Chapman fired 8 shots. Florida's "10-20-Life" law sets mandatory-minimum sentences for crimes involving guns. There are people serving 20 year prison sentences for firing a single warning shot inside their own homes. None, of course, are major league ballplayers.
comtut (Puerto Rico)
Sadly, I have to say Aroldis still doesn't get it. Dude, you're not in Cuba any longer, beating up or threatening women is NOT acceptable here, and trying to lay the blame on your volatile Latin temper just shows how immature you are. You want to make major league money, then act like a major leaguer, control your temper, and accept that you screwed up. And keep your hands to yourself and your gun holstered.
CHN (Boston)
This guy is a moron. He got the part of the script he'd been given right: "helping the team, etc.". The rest of it shows just what the Yankees have in their employment, and George would not like it.
wilwallace (San Antonio)
Partner in the bushes until the police arrived ???... Chapman said. “We [Latino ballplayers] make a lot of money, everyone wants a piece of it, and we end up looking bad..."

Okay, the Yankees have a problem here.

Failing to admit you have a violence problem through the excuse that Latino ballplayers are a target is a bomb with a lit fuse.

And the Yankee scouting system didn't know he makes junior high school excuses for his high school behavior and is prone to abusing women?

Time for the Yankees to fire someone in the front office; George Costanza can take their place.

Mr. Chapman has paid his penalty and now it is time to pitch. Good luck.
Gnirol (Tokyo, Japan)
He has not finished paying his penalty. The counseling he does not take seriously is part of the penalty. Good luck to those psychiatrists. It seems no one has asked him, "If your girlfriend was cowering in the bushes, hiding when she called 911, don't you think she felt afraid of you or is she a congenital bush-cowerer and 911 caller? How many other times has she called 911 from the bushes to report other men who hadn't done anything threatening to her? Mr. Chapman should imagine someone firing eight shots into a wall in a restaurant Mr. Chapman is eating in, especially someone with whom he'd had an argument earlier in the evening. I wonder if he'd keep on slurping his soup or cower under a table and call 911 claiming there was a maniac loose threatening everyone in the room. I am assuming that he wouldn't put his own life in danger by trying to restrain the shooter, the shooter being in the overwhelmingly dominant position, as Chapman was when confronting his girlfriend. I hope he will take his counseling seriously. I have been a Yankee fan for more than 55 years and I want to see them do much better than they have been this year. His analysis of the team not firing on all cylinders at once more than about once a week is right on the nose. I hope he can help but not if he keeps making excuses on this matter. Is he going to make excuses if he pitches badly too and cause disunity on the team?
DanO (NC)
Unbelievable that Chapman brings up the race card. Physical abuse of his girlfriend and shooting of a gun out of anger are serious offences that are dangerous to all races. Society is not following this case because there is no video.
eyesopen (New England)
When Chapman says "I do not have a problem" then he's really got a problem and is not facing up to it. His girlfriend was cowering in the bushes? He's shooting bullets into his garage wall? According to him, he's just a stereotypical hot-blooded Latino. No, he's a man who needs help, and until he accepts that, we can expect more incidents. What an injustice to push Miller out of the closer's role he's performed so well, and is so graciously taking one for the team.
