Attended N.Y.U., Downtown, in the 1970's, and I vaguely remember Stromboli's, on University Place. It can't possibly still be alive ... even as a mere web page. Can it?
Buddy and I were Ray's patrons, Sixth Ave. & 16th, or 17th.

We all get taken once or twice in our lives. As for the best Pizza I ever ate, that would be at Valian's an Italian restaurant in Houston.

They had an extensive fire suppression system built into their high ceiling. Unfortunately in the early 80's we had a harsh winter with unseasonably cold temperatures. It stayed in the 20's for about 90 hours.

The sprinklers broke open, flooding the 200 seat restaurant which never reopened. Its closing also broke the heart of Mr. Valian and many thousands of his customers.

It looks delicious, but you are saddled with naught but your memories. There last post was nearly 3 years ago, the page still lists hours of operation as if it were still in existence.

At least for the sake of those who don't know and would still come seeking Stromboli's in real life, tell them it no longer exists.

I loved Stromboli, their square was tops. Sitting at the window watching the Village river flow was a sweet comfort. This piece brought it all back. I'm on University Place all the time and walk past the vacant lot where the pizzeria stood, I moan a little each time I pass. Rosler highlights the memory with extra cheese. Great job!

20 years ago, my very first apartment in NY was on 10th and University.... I think Stromboli's was one of my very first tastes of NY pizza, delicious and more importantly, I could afford it!

Fare thee well Stromboli! You will be missed.

Oh my, such great memories!! I used to visit Stromboli very often in my years at NYU, 1967-71. I think the slices were $.50 or $75 cents back then. The very best, ever, in my opinion.

Yes, good, and the milieu was good too.

But the very best?

I don't think so.

The ubiquitous Ray's wins there: its faux named counterparts reminding all
that only the Ray with Ray himself counts.

Ah, well, we all leave our hearts where we need to, right?

The best pizza in the Village and open until the last disco closed.
Pushed out no doubt by trendy, overpriced pies only bond traders and 1% can afford.
Forget about Wall Street. Take back our pizza!!

Loved Stromboli! Used to go all the time when I worked at Fairchild on 12th Street. Was also in the WWD bowling league at Bowlmor. So much pie!!!!
Early 80's.
Ciao Stromboli!

But that "cover photo" that you are talking about sure looks
mouth-wateringly good!
