No One Takes the Cake

I get the impression this is not the first time something like this has happened. The security guard's response was too well prepared.

Actually the whole procedure is idiotic. There should be nothing wrong with having a cake box with you in the passport office unless it's a security concern. If a guard actually thinks something dangerous is inside the cake box, then putting it in the nearby planter (good news for mice) is a less than felicitous solution. Besides, now everyone knows you can hide something in the planter.
Great.

This piece takes the cake (or... doesn't)! At any rate, finally something from Metropolitan Diary that was worth reading.

She must have been lucky that any bugs did not get into it.

Next time I'm in the area and really hungry, I'm going to check the planters.

Clever enough solution. But my brain's stuck on how someone could forget that they were carrying an entire cake.

Love it.

Beautiful story.

Nice to meet a security guard (or anyone with any authority) who can think beyond yes or no! Glad you got to save that piece of cake ;-)

Nice! It's great to read a funny and positive story on Met Diary after several sad/negative ones recently.

Nothing like listening to instructions AND checking one's belongings for compliance right away. The writer was lucky the officer was so resourceful AND willing to help. That said, something similar once happened to me too: I forgot a very small flask with water inside my carry on while going through security. The officers were quite annoyed with me, and had me go through a super detailed search of anything I was carrying. It was their duty/right, but it made me feel very frustrated and ashamed at the same time :(

Never leave your food out of sight....murphy's law, anything bad can and will happen sooner or later...

Love this and love the advice given. Only in New York. That is why I love this city.
