Tom Coughlin’s Even Keel Rescues Giants From the Depths

I'm ready to see a coaching change, but in what way does Allie have more HOF credentials than Coughlin's 2 Super Bowl wins. He inherited a team stocked with talent, lost three NFL championship games in a row, and then watched the franchise disintegrate under his guidance. Coughlin has 3 times as many career wins and a better coaching percentage, despite a 4-12 record as the first coach of an expansion team, and a 6-10 record in his first season turning the Giants around.

Pleeeese indeed.

Except for two answered Hail Mary passes (Tyree, Manningham) this guy belongs to the '60s and not on any NFL team sideline - and HoF credentials? Allie Sherman had more and where did he wind up?

the "giant's way" can be frustrating at times...eg, jerry reese still has a job..but overall, stability works.

[when reese gets to name his own head coach, i hope he proves me wrong.]

As I recall, the last two Giant teams to win a superbowl had an overpowering pass rush fueled by their best defensive player coming back from injury with enough time to get his timing back but fresh enough to be at his best during the playoff run.

For the Giants to even make the playoffs they probably need similar help from a man who has already failed to meet expectations for the last two seasons and now has a mangled hand to contend with.

If the Giants don't manage to put significant distance between themselves and the Cowboys before Romo comes back it seems most likely they won't win their division or make the playoffs.

I like Tom Coughlin as a football man and a family man. He has adjusted with the times and a different sort of player to win two Super Bowls, no facile feat.

However, the miscommunication with Eli Manning in week 1 was almost the most bone-headed game mismanagement ever.

I would say it was the worst, but Pete Carroll's Super Bowl fiasco will never be topped. It seems to me it still lingers.

And as you intimate, Bill, Dan Snyder is a putrid owner. But he's laughing all the way to the bank with the stratospheric book value of the Redskins. Alas, the team on the field is not so important. Snyder tries and he spends. But he does not understand sports, and in final analysis is a modern meddler of Dickensian foolishness.

Please....a division championship? This is clearly the Ta-Ta Tom Tour. Eli was wise to take the Giants guarantee money BEFORE this season.
Glacier speed indeed. After the first game at Dallas, Preston Parker should have been given car fare home. Donnell should be at the bus station soon. Is he a coaches son or something?

Run defense looked great. Middle of the field pass defense? The team went into prevent defense at 4 minutes left in the first half. A more accurate qb would have had the team in deep kimchee.

Got one coming up a week from Sunday.

At least the Giants get to play Washington again....

Same thing was said in 2007. At the season start, everytalking head was sure Coughlin was gone at the end of the season and the season itself was a formality, just a setup to see who would lose to the Pats in the SB.

Well guess what.

A good coach makes the most of what they have. Yes Parker was a liabilty and he's gone, but it you cut him in the locker room at Dallas, you're Snyder and no one is going to war for you. Coughlin was brilliant in going to Randle and Donnell often against Washington. Unless you know of a better TE available, what's the point of putting him down.

Both teams had compromised secondaries, Washington just matched up better against the Giants because their pass rush was getting through an injured O line. If Eli held on for longer passes, he might have been holding a clipboard next weeek like Romo.

Coming from a season ticket holder: Isn't there something better to do on a Thursday afternoon in Hawaii anyway?

To name an American sports team after the aboriginal Americans is a mark of respect for their tenacity, skill, courage and honor: Redskins, Indians and Braves are not words of insult. They are words of respect.

"But after watching a little more than two weeks of N.F.L. football, I am of the mind that this season may be Coughlin’s last great opportunity to win a third Super Bowl."

Perhaps, since the NFC East could easily end up like last season's NFC South - where the first place team has a losing record. And with a few more turns of good luck (for them, and bad luck for the other NFC East teams), a few breakout players coming into their own, and getting hot at the right time, who knows how far they could go.

Living in Washington, I hear a lot of talk at the beginning of the season when there is hope and before the team takes to the field. Inevitably, the team takes to the field, the hope fades, and so does the talk. I'd like to thank Mr. Snyder for preventing a transplant from being a fan of his sports franchise just by being himself. Carry on Mr. Snyder, I'm always happy to watch the team self destruct year after year.

Great writing, as usual, Mr. Rhoden! And, thank you for reminding us Giants fans about our enviable ownership and coaches.

Thank you William Rhoden. Your last two columns on the Giants have put the season back into perspective! (From an out-of-town, expatriate New Yorker.)

I live in a Southern suburb of New York City, South Florida. A life long Football Giants fan and the Giants disappoint me yearly. The problem is not the coach for the past few seasons but the quarterback. Eli Manning is OK but is no world beater in running the offense. Tom Brady is the standard in this sport. Something is missing with the offense with the Giants, they are dull.
