How could this be written without reference to the island's rainfall record? The one day total of 71.8 in January of 1966 ( Foc-Foc, La Reunion 21°14'S, 55°41'E ).

If anyone is thinking of going, note that there is a new airpass involving the airlines of the Indian Ocean called the 'Vanilla Islands Pass". You have to enter the region on one of the member airlines of Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, the Comoros or Seychelles to be eligible for the cheap inter-island rates. Here is the link for the airline of Reunion which flies there from Paris.

Air Seychelles and Air Mauritius have joint fares published out of North America. Check their websites to see if they offer the pass as it would have to be booked through the long-haul airline BEFORE YOU ARRIVE.

From the news clip it appeared Reunion Island needs to work on the garbage found on the rocky coastline.

As a recent visitor to the island, the Getty Images picture used is incorrectly cited as the "Cirque du Mafate". That's actually the Piton d'Enchaing in the center of the Cirque de Salazie, with part of Hell-Bourg in front of the peak.

You can have a look at the whole island on Android! Just find it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Reunion.ReunionIslandC...
Amazing 360° videos!

Breathtaking hikes are the main attractions of the Island (going on the top of an extinct volcano - Piton des Neiges or hiking close to an active one (Piton de la Fournaise), crossing lunar landscapes, walking under waterfalls... ).
I would also add that the island offers a fascinating diversity of cultures and religions (it is incredibly colorful!). The food is exceptional drawing from Indian, French, Chinese and African cuisines. My family is in part from there.

Yes, but you can't go into the water - Sharks!

Great article and good to see Réunion getting some tourism publicity (even in unusual circumstances). I lived on this gem of an island for a year in 2013-14 teaching English up in the mountains of Cilaos - one of the three cirques/calderas (I have a blog post here in case anyone is interested in the experience of living and teaching there: https://versify.co/2015/06/teaching-english-as-a-foreign-language-in-la-....

It's certainly not on the popular tourist radar but there are beautiful volcanic sand beaches, easily accessible mountain trails and affordable adventure sports - something for everyone.

Dan - any way you can re-post the URL of your blog post year in Réunion? It now ends with "...language-in-la-...." - the la- being cut off.
You can shorten it to about 26 characters by copying the entire URL into "www.tinyURL.com" - it's very handy!

I clicked on the link as displayed and got to a page not found, then noticed an errant ) at the end, deleted that from the URL, and got to the site.

If the locals call their land "La Reunion", then that is its name. To insist on calling it anything else, such as "Reunion Island", is just arrogance.

Calling Deutschland "Germany" is arrogance? Calling the United States "Los Estados Unidos" is arrogance?
Michel Corbin (Rhode Island)
I don't think it's arrogance, it's the same as China for the Chinese, or how United States is translated as États-Unis in French.

Political correctness run amok.

I was fortunate enough to have lived for nearly one year on Reunion Island in 1993. It is France's Hawaii. It is an 11 hour flight south-east of Paris. The peaks you see in these images are 8-10,000 feet high. Two of the three cirques, called caldera in this article, are accessible by car, unlike what is written in this article: Cirque de Salazie and Cirque de Cilaos. The spectacular mountains, more than the beaches and ocean, are what draw people to Reunion.
