Enough, I'm bored with this. Who cares where the World Cup is being held, most of us will watch it on television. I'm glad South Africa got their World Cup. Brazil was magnificent, Russia will probably be better. As far as Qatar goes, a World Cup just before Christmas? sounds like heaven.

I take this article as further evidence that FIFA's top leadership has no intention of reforming their organization in any meaningful way. Mr. Blatter's delayed resignation was only a tactic to take the heat off FIFA, and turn the spotlight elsewhere. They can use the intervening six months before the election of his replacement to ensure that the 'new boss is the same as the old boss'. The bidding for the 2026 world cup is not delayed until changes and transparency can be instituted, but to wait for the scandal to fade and business as usual to be restored. We shouldn't be surprised. There's just too much money at stake.

The more you look at it you can only conclude that Washington DoJ and FBI are on a witch hunt and this time in the field of sports. Is it? Of course not this is another Washington scheme to get control of the Soccer Federation FIFA with the sole purpose to manipulate the most popular sport in the world. Can you imagine if the soccer fans are being brainwashed as well by the hypocritical minds of politicians in Washington.
Isn't it enough for the neocons in Washington of US aggression and invasions into sovereign nations and bribing foreign governments with false promises and paying of their politicians? And here DoJ and FBI investigating a lousy $ 10 million bribe, arresting FIFA officials on foreign territory who are not even US citizens. And then think about the large banks who ripped off corporations and people for Billions of Dollars with their Libor and Exchange rate rigging or manipulating the prices of gold, silver, oil, aluminium and more. And NO banker got arrested, indicted or imprisoned?
Yes, indeed Washington this is another scheme but this one in the field of sports. USA, indeed you're falling deep and don't deserve any respect in this world only SHAME ON YOU

"Oh, THAT $10 million..."

Does anyone think that the OLYMPICS' equivalent of FIFA must not have set the tone for bribery in terms of where the future host site (country) was chosen. I'm not holding my breath, but I think there is something rotten in the 'global' state of awarding host countries to a competition that declares "World Champion NATION".
I suspect that selecting the "SUPER BOWL" stadium might also have something to do with "undisclosed incentives". At least, unlike MLB the NFL doesn't claim to crown WORLD Champions.

I am entertained by sports, but I have yet to spend a dollar targeted specifically to watch or attend a professional sporting event.

It' ultimately ALL about MONEY!

Wow! so every championship game is awarded based on bribes?.... You'd think bigger market cities could pay more for the super bowl? But the SB keeps going to warm weather markets that are sunny in feb..... because the owners of all 32 teams decide what city to host the SB with SB's being awarded to teams that have new complexes

“Why is this the fault of FIFA when the money is not FIFA’s money, FIFA has no responsibility on this money, it is South Africa’s money, and it was a gift to the African diaspora in the Caribbean,” sure it's not FIFA's money, but FIFA facilitated the transaction. FIFA is the one that laundered the money and made it shiny and clean.

This is the same Jerome Valcke who was described by Federal Judge Loretta Preska as having no credibility in the 2006 Mastercard case against FIFA in US Federal Court in New York.

FIFA and its corrupt ways are killing professional soccer, so anything they say about 'protecting' the sport or the World Cup should be immediately dismissed. And Russia continues to prove it is a country run by and for thieves.
Onno Frowein (Noordwijk, The Netherlands)
And when USA bribes IOC officials like it happened for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. So, corruption is OK when it favours the USA, Right?? USA is NOT a soccer nation and therefore shouldn't qualify for organizing the World Cup.

But this is all beside the point all Washington's purpose is to get control of the world including sports. Since soccer is the world's MOST popular sport, not baseball and not basket ball and not American Football. So soccer is outside the American influence sphere and Washington is trying to buy this by accusing and arresting FIFA officials without ANY hard evidence. But that's the American way Accuse the innocent so America looks better, that's how Washington neocons rule the world, why don't you get some CIA or Blackwater agents to shoot the FIFA officials?

He went from "I never made that payment" and "I could never make that payment even if I wanted to" to "I made that payment." Now we're asked to believe that this same payment is not suspicious. How naive does Valke think we are?

Russia is merely football business as usual. Not that that is nice but there are more important things going on between Russia and Europe/North America. Like the Group of 8 is now 7. As the old saw goes, nobody is going to die of the World Cup being held in Russia.

The awful football problem is Qatar. Already workers are dying and more will die building facilities that will have no other good use. That there is talk of moving the WC into prime league football (aka soccer) season in order to ameliorate (not solve) the climate issues may turn out to be a blessing in that it is already getting the attention of football club management and players who may be inured to FIFA's shenanigans but do not appreciate having their business models threatened.

It is clear both SA and FIFA are complicit in this 10 million transfer/bribe. If this were legit, one or both would have had a stronger interest that the money was spent for the intended purpose. No one gives an employee or subordinate such a large sum of money without proper controls to ensure it is utilized correctly. They of course didn't want to know what happened to it because it was a bribe.

If Russia is proven guilty of winning a World Cup through massive levels of bribery, wouldn't screwing up the Russian team's ability to qualify for the World Cup be a good thing? Even if taking the World Cup from Russia didn't rob them of their ability to compete for a UEFA slot, shouldn't such a country be banned from FIFA events for a few years anyway?

Similarly, isn't it a good thing to reward the countries who stood up to Sepp Blatter and his corruption and tried to fix FIFA? England 2018, USA 2022.

Next FIFA will complain that imprisoning corrupt FIFA officials is unfair, because it robs them of their ability to live a life of luxury by spending their ill-gotten money.

Maybe its just a scheme to punish Russia for Snowden and Ukraine. Is it corruption when people or groups give large donations to candidates?. No they don't expect anything back - no way.

Why the wait until Dec 2015 to hold elections to replace Blatter? Does Blatter need the time to do some "housecleaning" of FIFA's files? The US should not attend the 2018 World Cup in Russia and American companies need to withdraw their financial support. The logos of the American companies on the backdrop of FIFA's news conferences is sad.
Christopher (Manhattan)
Only nine days ago "...Mr. Valcke had said in an email to The New York Times that not only he had not authorized the payment, that he did not have the power to do so."

So, at the very best, he is a liar. But we already knew that.
youngerfam (NJ)
So, lets review the bidding here. Mr. Valcke tells us that he didn't do it, but if he did, which he now says he did, it was merely an administrative action for which he can't be held responsible, but if he is responsible he assures us it isn't a big deal, but if its a big deal its not FIFA's big deal because its South Africa's money, but if it is FIFA's money, its still not a big deal because the organization was merely transferring a gift, but if it wasn't a gift it definitely wasn't a bribe. Wow. Did everyone get that. Very impressive. Mr. Valcke, have you thought about a World Cup for CHUTZPAH!
D Christmas (Chapel Hill, NC)
It certainly doesn't look good for FIFA. If it can be shown Mr Warner actually began to divert some of the $10m for personal use, the bribery allegation would be indisputable. It would be good if the feds have proof of that

I think these guys are represented by Jackie Chiles and the lawyer played by Martin Short on SNL. And E. Buzz Miller handles the PR.

With what Face this FiFa official suggests to protect the Cup in RUSSIA?. The 2018 CUP in Russia must be CANCELLED. With what rationale do you reward a country like Russia with a World Cup? A country which excels in money laundering, terrorism, destabilization of governments specially in South America and the sell of arms and dangerous technologies to rogue regimes. Oh yes and that little thing like blowing up Airliners and Invading countries, killing political disidents, etc, etc....I'd say this Jerome Valckie should be next on INTERPOL LIST of suspects for fraud and corruption. Oh and I'd like to see a Few Swiss bankers and banks come out from this Cesspool of gangsters....
John McD. (California)
Then why has no one ever seen of heard of this African Diaspora program until now, that the $10 million payment has become public? You would think such a gesture would be a source of pride for South Africa and that they would wish to let the rest of the world know of their generosity and commitment. Instead, silence. As happens when your aim is that people NOT know about something you are doing.
Fitzcaraldo (Portland)
I thought FIFA said last week that the guy who died last year had authorized the payment.

Was this in error?
Paul (Bellerose Terrace)
Not in error...just last week's story. There must be some incontrovertible evidence in the hands of the Feds to take the responsibility away from the dead man (Hitchcock's Maguffin?).
It just shows how deep the corruption goes, and Valcke is a single step removed from Sepp.
This fish has rotted all the way from the head to its incredible tale.
