Great news! I love mountain countries and people; have always had a soft corner in my heart for the Bhutanese, although I don't know a single citizen of that beautiful river-drained and rain-soaked country of a million and half people. It's entirely conceivable that, with billionaire individuals and sports-minded corporations providing more facilities--indoor soccer fields and scholarships for Bhutanese soccer players to study at universities with outstanding soccer programs abroad, including the U. S., the Bhutanese soccer team might blossom into a major national team, capable of beating not only Asian teams but also African, Central and South American, as well as European and American teams. Go Bhutan!

Great article. I felt like I was at the Stadium. Congratulations to Bhutan. Hopefully their FIFA rankings will rise a bit.

Phew! That was an exciting end to a game. Maybe Bhutan was a bit lucky there was no goal line technology, because the ball was really close to going in.

The dice worked though, the Sri Lankan should have scored into a mostly empty net. Very classy of the Sri Lankas and their coach -- this must have been a tough one to swallow. But I assume any team going into Bhutan will have a tough day now.

I'm really happy for Bhutan.
This line, though: "the effect of the 9,000-foot altitude began to take its toll..." has thrown me off. Why - and how - was the game being played nearly 1,500 feet above the elevation of the stadium? Surely THAT's the real story here.

The beautiful game...

A real upbeat story. Thank you.

Both of the stories about Bhutan were excellent - fantastic reporting work by the Times. I fear for the inevitable massacre when Bhutan gets to the next level, but bravo to them for coming this far. And congratulations to the Sri Lanka coach and players for acknowledging their defeat in a gracious and sportsmanlike manner. No losers in these games.
