Darrelle Revis’s Message to Jets Fans: ‘New York, I’m Coming Home’

Gee, Mr. Revis, isn't that special. You sold your services to the highest bidder. Nothing wrong with that, it's the American Way! But don't pretend it's anything else.
michjas (Phoenix)
Bowles is a defensive specialist. Last year he had Patrick Peterson, a Revis type cornerback. Petersom's contract is similar to Revis's. If Bowles is behind this I wouldn't second guess him. He's one of the best in building a quality defense.
Harri (Eagle Bridge, NY)
The question remains- why would anyone with choices choose the Jets organization.
Matt Ng (NY, NY)
With this signing, the Jets will now be 4-12 rather than, well, 4-12, okay, so no change.

It's amazing to see so many people complaining about Revis cashing in, as if these same critics wouldn't do the same.
John Figliozzi (Halfmoon, NY)
There's the distinct odor of sour grapes in some of these posts. For Jet fans, do you want the team to spend some money and try to win? Or do you want a repeat of last year? As for the Revis contract, with the meat market that is the NFL - where the health and welfare of players mean not a thing - I'm for any player getting as much as they can from any team who will give it to him. It's a short career that leads all to often to a shortened life. As for me, I like what the Jets are doing. Finally. More to come, no doubt.

A Patriots fan to all fans of the J-E-T-S Jets: Revis will be a shutdown corner for a 3-13 team. Enjoy!
david shepherd (rhode island)
He won't win another with ol' Fitzy as the QB, that's for sure. I guess he'll be content to sit on the sideline while looking at his one ring as he calculates the interest his newly-minted millions will be earning.
michjas (Phoenix)
The Jets front-loaded the contract and minimized the cap harm. If Revis stays healthy for 3 years, the guaranteed salary will be used up. The #1 concern is his ACL. #2 is his hamstring. The injury concerns have to have been addressed. Some ACL injuries are worse than others. Likewise with the hamstring. If the doctors cleared him, I think the deal makes sense.

Lifetime Giant fan here. But I'm glad there are finally signs of life in the Jets organization. They have loyal, long-suffering fans (and believe me us Giants fans understand THAT) and should put it together and step on the Pats' dreams a little. Getting #24 back should help them, if he's still THE MAN. I am amused by all the talk all of a sudden about what a great coach Rex Ryan is. If he's so great, he should have saved his job in NY/NJ instead of being exiled up to NW NY.

Now for Big Blue. In typical NYG fashion, we go after the ones favored by our brain trust rather than the guys who write on the back page. If we land a good combination on the OL, our man Eli is set to break out again. He can certainly use that third SB MVP to show his brother.

The Free Market is a wonderful thing.
Jon W (Portland)
As a Pat's fan -sorry to see him go...but he was not going to stay in New England after signing for year a year ago...got a super bowl ring and increased his market ability ....and won a larger amount...for 2yrs....at which time he will be 32 yrs old and 33 in the 3rd year of his contract...smart man...Roger Goddell even smarter....Go Pats!
Mac (Portland, OR)
After all the speculation about what mattered to Revis and what his criteria was, it seems clear now he wanted to coast back into NYC. And any difference in money, however small, would be enough—and the Jets, like an Ebay auction bidder, were desperately ready to top any offer. He will never play in another championship game, possibly not even another playoff game; he's essentially chosen a retirement package, and what does that say about the player's desire to win, to compete? At the other end of the continuum is Tom Brady, willing to restructure 'funny money' to be part of a winning team.
Nancy (Great Neck)
"Home" is where the money is. Fine, but be honest or at least do not think I am fooled.
Erik (Maine)
Do you suppose Revis will wear his New England Patriots Superbowl ring around the Jets locker room?
Scott (Boston)
Well, looks like the Jets are all set and on the road to victory next season. Wait, what? They don't have a real quarterback? Never mind then.
dubious (new york)
Something very fishy here where the Jets got 1st and 2nd round pick from Tampa and now Revis fully healed comes back to the Jets. Very fishy but great fishy move by the Jets.

The NFL has amazingly managed to turn fan against players who want to maximize their value in a sport that is as close to the gladiators fighting in the Coliseum as anything can be. Looking at how the NFL has tried to short change former players in need of all sorts of medical care as well as the number of them with early onset dementia, players should get and squirrel away as much as they can. Funny, no one complains about Roger Goddell being paid a reported $35 million last year for what wouldn't be called a good year. The other thing is no one would be critical if this was one of there kids doing just what Revis did and does.
Sam I Am (Windsor, CT)
Revis is a great player, but this is a bizarre move by the Jets. They are a long way from being competitive for a championship, and blowing this much salary cap space on a single player (non-QB) is not a formula with a track record of success.
The Jets need to find a QB and build depth at all positions, and hope that a few of their players end up being worth more than they are paid. That takes patience - something always in rare supply in the NY hot-seat but that New England has in spades.
Meanwhile, New England will continue to attract players who want to compete for championships, and they will end up with players willing to work for something less than full market value.
Mike (CT)
Excellent point. The Jets have little to offer free agent players except money and the fame that comes with playing in NYC. They aren't quite as desperate as my hopeless Knicks (yet), but they're not in the ideal position to build a team. And since the QB free agent market is extremely bare, they won't be able to find a good one except through smart draft moves - which doesn't have much of a precedent for the Jets.

As for patience, you're right that it's necessary for their long-term success. But good luck finding any of that with Woody & Co. It's entirely about making a PR splash with them.
Charlie B (USA)
Players move around. Owners buy and sell teams. None have a permanent connection to the cities they represent; it's a business, and we fans are the product sold to advertisers. As Jerry Seinfeld once wrote, nothing is constant except the uniforms, so essentially we're rooting for laundry.
Dan (VT)
People were yelling last year that the Jets kept the $ in their pockets. Now, they're yelling about FA's costing too much. I think this is a good gamble. The d line is solid, and this is football where contracts are not guaranteed. He probably won't get all the 70 million. Of course it's the Jets so I understand the cynicism.

As to the Pats, they should know that this is a prideful man. If they had wanted him they would have picked up the option and then negotiated long term. He DID bring them a Superbowl. (and he brought the moribund Jets to the brink of the SB 2x) As a Jet fan I'm happy.

As an athlete it must be sweet for the team that drafted you to acknowledge a mistake and bring you back. Now let's draft Mariota and get a Championship for NYJ.
John Brady (Canterbury, CT.)
Revis will turn out to be the Jet's Albatross. There is always a 'Revis' ready to sprout somewhere in the NFL and my guess is the Patriots will find him. And at a good deal less moola.
JohnnieHunt (NJ)
He'll be holding out for more a year from now. Thats what he does. Bad idea bringing him back...
mikemea2 (New Jersey)
Anyone want to guess how long will it take for Revis to moan and groan about this contract, as he has with his other ones? My guess is by the end of the mini-camp in May...
robert (seattle)
the giants are doing the same thing they did last year, sign a bunch of mediocrities with the predictable 6 - 10 result. they just handed out $55m worth of contracts after $110m last year. i'm glad mara can afford it.
Susan (New York, NY)
So? Who's the QB? Last time I checked NFL teams need a QB.
Billy from Brooklyn (Hudson Valley NY)
We Giant fans do not have strong feelings for the Jets....they are in a different conference. But as an outsider, I think they have lost their marbles. That is too much to pay for a CB, no matter how proficient. They will now need to pay less at other positions, and it will cost the team depth.

Plus, in about 5 minutes after signing the deal, Revis will start thinking of how he can better the deal, either by eventual hold-out or just by complaining about his pay level. It is just how he is, considering a contract as another area of competition.

Just to much a % of the salary cap spent on a single position, and especially to someone who will soon be on the back-end of his career. A bad biz decision.
abo (Paris)
OK, so Revis clearly prefers the money to playing for a championship team.
Kevin (Rockport, MA)
39 million guaranteed plus all the money from playoff victories...ummmm.wait minute...never mind...enjoy golf in January DR...
ABT (Citizen of the world)
I hate to be pedantic, but isn't Pittsburgh actually home for Darrelle Revis?
RAY (HOBOKEN,NEW JERSEY)
Since you just woke up,he means in football parlance.
as (New York)
Good move by Revis. Expensive move by the Jets. Hard to understand how this makes sense if one wants to win. I agree with Entropic above. Football needs a lot of talent, not a few talents. It is the ultimate team sport. As we saw in the super bowl every player has to be a standout. Much as I worry about the health issues with football it is hard to get it out of my blood, as a former player. My kids did not play. I wish these players a long and healthy life.
VJR (North America)
Who can the Jets get by trading away Woody Johnson and Michael Vick, the two poison pills of the New Yirk Jets?
ghinfla (Ga)
As a Pats fan, I am sorry to see him go but his statement of "coming home" says it because it sure isn't about winning.
Viking (Garden State)
"Home" translated to be where the most money can be paid ... But I don't fault that approach. The nfl is a tough vocation.
EEE (1104)
Superbowls aren't bought, their earned. For what Brady and Butler are paid, you get 1/2 a Revis. Throwing money around is what you do when you're coach is inferior.
The Jets are losers, yet... See you in January...
BTW, Thanks, Revis... we enjoyed your year. Best of luck...
Ryan Bingham (Out there)
Perfect timing by the Jets. Lock up an older player in his declining years with a huge contract.
Progressive Power (Florida)
Yes...apparently the Jets follow the Yankees business model.

Revis gave up a legit shot at rings in exchange for a few extra shekels ....that's not the "Patriot Way".
TGK (USVI)
Beware the 29 year old geezer!
Progressive Power (Florida)
With a "perfect" rebuilding strategy in place, the Jets should be contenders again right about time for Revis to retire.

Meanwhile he can watch the Patriots play January - February football on his super-sized 3D flatscreen while asking himself
" What was I thinking?"
ernieh1 (Queens, NY)
That's a lot of money for one football player, but to put the matter into perspective, Commissioner Roger Goodell makes $40 million a year without playing a single down, or risking a single concussion or broken bone.
Michael (Stockholm)
Contrary to what everyone else is writing, I don't think that it's OK to just think in terms of maximizing a payout. It's a sign of what is wrong with society. Sports figures and CEOs are simply the worst of the worst. There's more to life than the almighty dollar.
Daniel (Greece)
This is wonderful. It flat-out broke my heart when he left, and it was bizarre to see him in those other uniforms. I know the game is a business for the owners, and it's a business for the networks. It's a business for the players, too. But it never was, and never will be, a business for me. I've been rooting for the Jets for 40 years -- since the Namath years -- and I've yet to make a nickel from it. This for me is love. Love for my youth and my innocence, my childhood, and something called pure joy. It's hard to come by anywhere else. Welcome back, Darelle.
Kathy K (Bedford, MA)
What a fool's paradise you live in. The guy left NY because of money, he returns because of money. The guy got his ring, so now he has his dough. Good luck to him. This is not about love, loyalty or a desire to be a champion. As that great philosopher Sean Combs once said "It's all about the Benjamins."
Entropic (Hopkinton, MA)
The Jets now have a great cornerback, but their odds of winning the Super Bowl remain virtually indistinguishable from zero. I understand the desire for Revis, but the money would have been more wisely spent on lesser paid chess pieces that might turn the team into a winner. They sort of bought an Apple watch here. Expensive and rare, but not going to change much of anything day-to-day.
Daniel (Greece)
We know the defense was significantly better with him than it was without him. There aren't too many players in the league that lift an entire unit. That's what Revis Island is all about.
Claude Raines (Casablanca)
if the patriots didn t want to re-sign him and they run a great organization- why do the Jets think they know better???
Patrick (Orlando, Fl)
I don't think what you're saying is has merit. Todd Bowles runs a similar system to Rex and needs corners who can play man coverage for his blitzers to get to the QB. Having Revis will help the D-Line get more pressure on the quarterback and make the strength of the defense even better. Sure they have more holes to fill but they still have $30 million in cap space available. WR is now a strength with Marshall-Decker-Kerley and Amaro is emerging as a good player at TE. Of course the big question mark is quarterback but without any big time players on the trading block they had to spend money elsewhere. I think its a fantastic move and one that fits with Bowles system.
Capt. Fantastic (Boston, Ma)
Regis follows a long list of outstanding Patriot defensive players that the organization released because they didn't want to pay up (The salary cap is primarily used as an excuse by the team not to resign star players). Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Asante Samuel: All-Pros. The list goes on. If Patriot's management chose to keep these guys the # of Super Bowl wins would probably be even higher.
As a Pats fan am I asking for too much? I don't think so. Not with a talent like Brady- who isn't going to be around forever. The Patriots organization squandered his talents because they didn't want to pay for a good defense. It was 10 years between this year's SB victory and the last one. Everytime the Pats won a SB they had a outstanding defense - Brady can't do it alone. And he's seen his last one in all likelihood. Good for Revis getting as much as he could. Don't blame him.
Artie (Honolulu)
You're right about the importance of defense. But well over a million bucks a game, not for batting away a few passes or making an interception, but just for showing up and being intimidating? I dunno. At least Chuang Tzu didn't ask to be traded for a bigger salary.
John Henri (Lynn, Ma)
You are kidding right ? 15 years of great football. Always being in the "hunt". I find it hard to believe you are a "Pats fan".
Billy from Brooklyn (Hudson Valley NY)
Capt--
Teams like the Pats, Steelers, Colts succeed year after year because they understand the salary cap. If you can secure a franchise QB, you then do not overpay any other position. Keep bringing in new players and you will not end-up with 40% of the salary cap going to a half dozen players. This way you always have youth, speed and depth. There is no down or rebuilding period.

Fans get attached to star players, but not a wise organization. With a first-rate QB and coaching staff, you can then turn-over anyone else.
Jake S (Harlem)
Glad to have Revis back. Good for him for getting as much money as he could. Every penny in the hands of the players rather than the owners is progress. I hope Maccagnan can continue to build a good team around him.
Danielle (Martha's Vineyard)
I will never begrudge any athlete for cashing in,even if it hurts the team I root for. Good luck to Mr. Revis and all of the other free agent signings. Get every last dollar you can because when you are no longer useful those in charge will abandon you in a NY minute.
