Orquesta Juvenil Curepto (Curepto, Chile)
Beautiful documentary. We need resources for the growth of our youth orchestra.

How can I make a donation to support youth orchestras in Chile?
Elizabeth Trovall (Santiago, Chile)
That's an excellent question. Looks like you can make a donation through a Chilean bank account or a credit card.

Here's the FOJI website: http://www.orquestajuvenilchile.com/fundacion/index.php?option=com_conte...

The "Colabore" tab is where it talks about making donations. Doesn't look like they have that translated into English.

I would say this is your best bet: 1. Tarjeta de Crédito
Descontar una cuota mensual de su tarjeta de crédito llamando al 6553500 o enviando un e-mail a [email protected]

Basically they are saying to make a monthly payment from your credit card you can call that number or email [email protected]. I would recommend emailing them to see if you can make a one-time payment. They should have someone on staff that speaks English, if you don't speak Spanish.

Hope that helps!

On the FOJI website (http://www.orquestajuvenilchile.com/fundacion/), there is a "Colabore" tab, there you'll find some info. I bet they would appreciate it.

What an amazing story! It's great to know that there are people like Melody in this world who are inspiring new generations to achieve their dreams through education and the arts. This article is definitely worth a "Share" on my author's page! Thanks so much for posting this!

Beautiful! The young girl's story reminds me of Pablo Casals early life in Spain as related in the book Joys and Sorrows. He also left his home at an early age to continue learning and playing his passion - music

Secondary and university education are free in Chile. Presumably the "high tuition" refers to private institutions. How did Melody get her degree...?
Liz (Hamilton, NY)
Unfortunately, since the dictatorship, university education is no longer free in Chile.
Alicia (NY)
Unfortunately university education is not free in Chile, even State institutions have very high tuition compared with national incomes. She probably received a scholarship or an educational loan from the State, that she will have to pay throughout her life... as in my case.
lhce (Chile)
In Chile, public or private university are very expensive, maybe she could get a scholarship for his degree

Who composed the opening piece that continues in the background throughout the documentary? Vivaldi? Purcell? Bach?
Elizabeth (Chicago)
It's Vivaldi, "Concerto in A Minor."

Music is my real language too. I know how wonderful, and how important, it is for someone to discover it as her true way of speaking. When people talk of the benefits of music in education, which are many, they seldom acknowledge that for some people music is, simply, as necessary as breathing. This little film shows that better than anything I have seen. Well done!!

So beautiful, I was moved to tears.

Thank G-d for music and the people who live to share it.

A lot like star athletes in Compton. Lots of practice. Free schooling. Lucrative performances without payment. Hopes of distant wealth that comes to few. Team concepts taught. Self-worth wrapped in what may well prove a dead end. The main difference is the Compton kids face greater challenges and have to have more character because they are surrounded by drugs and violence. Art is in the eye of the beholder. Self-righteous snobs are everywhere.
RMGillespie (New York NY)
Major difference between music education and star athletes is that music, like recreational sports, goes with us to the end of life. Nothing in this story is about stars although one orchestra and one player are highlighted. Where are the snobs?
Monica (Rotterdam)
Michjas, I understand that your opinion comes from ignorance. People in this cities face hardship and poverty every day. In the latest years there is also an increase of drugs and violence. I know it because I actually grew up in the south of Chile and I love it, but it's far from being perfect. I woudn't dare to question the hardships in Compton because I've never been there. I just believe you and respect your vision from your area. I would ask you the same kindness in return. Greetings.

God bless these intelligent people. Our cultural icons like Jaz Z and Kayne are musical terrorists ,destroying the God given right to Melody,Harmony & Rhythm, and the fools that promote them and are responsible for the raging stupidity in our culture,
Hugh (Connecticut)
Does not the blame for the state of popular music today lie on the consumers of popular music? Terrible music's been around as long as music itself — in every genre, era, style, etc. of music. The ones responsible for the "raging stupidity in our culture" are those ragingly stupid people themselves. The music they listen to is a consequence of their stupidity, not the cause of it.

P. S. Although I refer to the popular music of today as terrible, I would just like to say that the merit of any piece of music, just like that of any other work of art, is completely subjective. I just abhor the music today due to my personal preferences.

Really? That's what you could come up with after watching such an uplifting documentary?
