And if Rukmimini Callimachi were to show pictures from Aleppo it would be difficult to tell the two cities apart. Only in that case it was Mr. Assad taking the city back from the (western supported ) rebels.

Possibly the only difference would be that Donald Duck would not have been defaced.

Perhaps it should also be remembered that some of the destruction in Mosul was caused by the Iraqi troops taking it back.

One can't distinguish in the slaughter in Iraq and Syria as it were without a "scorecard".

This article demonstrates why these people should not be allowed in the United States. Obama did not take ISIS seriously; they were his "J.V" squad. He thought that by taking out bin Laden, that prevailed against terrorism. According to a discussion on NPR this afternoon, the authority said the defeat of ISIS in Mosul is only a dent, that they are far from being destroyed. Thank God, we have a Commander-in-Chief who takes them seriously. Isupport Trump. Thank you.

So, what's the plan now?

Amazing report - Be safe Rukmini!

Thanks to George W. Bush, Iraq is a failed state where terrorism thrives. That is Bush's legacy.

NO, thanks to OBAMA for leaving the Iraq defenseless, so he could make a silly political promise come true. Thousands died because he withdrew our troops.

SHAME.

you mean, the troops that Iraqi's government demanded leave and GW Bush had agreed upon ? you saying we should have ignored the legitimate government and occupied the country indefinitely in spite of them? You saying we should renege on our agreements?

Umm, no, this is NOT the "fault" of the Obama administration for doing what the American public (as well as locals in Iraq) by and large badgered it to do all along, which was to leave the country and bring our troops home. What you call a "political promise" is what I would call being responsive to vast majority of Americans wanting our troops OUT of the Middle-Esat. Obama obliged as best he could given the horrible circumstances and unpredictable consequences. If the military generals on the ground told him the troops they'd trained could handle the war, then who was he to disagree? Obbviously not an easy decision based on conflicting and confusing responses from the "Can Do" military generals who always had some kind of "winning" plan. Really, a no-win situation for Obama, and you know what, he may have saved thousands of American lives by withdrawing. Yes, too bad things didn't work out well for the Iraqis, but who really knew or understood the absolute violence and tenacity of ISIL? Sad all around, and yes, a real HUMANITARIAN shame. Let's pray there's a plan in place to turn things around there.

Nice reporting. So sad and the place still looks like it will take years to come out of the rubble.

This is the culmination of the ideological certainty of the Bush White House 15 years ago, which was undaunted by many dire warnings by experts. Horror is the only emotional response I can summon right now.

The place is totally ruined by our daily bombings which fit the old Vietnam policy of 'destroying a city to save it'. How anyone be proud of this is beyond me.
