I enjoyed her performances. If one is going to die, one could do worse than to have people who read about your death say they enjoyed your performances. RIP Georgia.
Guido Malsh (Cincinnati)
In her own way, she reminded me of Edith Bunker! Both classics!

So many good, clean laughs from this lovely, funny lady, and from well-written scripts and perfectly placed lines and pauses. Always enjoyed her, she always brought something extra and fine to whatever she was in. Gone too soon.

We loved her....RIP

I was too young to see much of MTM (some later in syndicated reruns), but I loved Georgette Engel on Everybody Loves Raymond. She and Fred Willard as Amy's parents were hilarious together and singly. I recall fondly the episode in which Robert discovers that "Pat" is a smoker; how funny it was to see sweet Pat/Georgette with a cigarette dangling out of her mouth. Miss you, Georgette, but believe you know perfect peace, joy, and love now.

She was a lovely person in real life as well. She was approachable and friendly, and took dance classes with dedication at Broadway Dance Center.

She was a surprise guest in City Center's first production of Boys from Syracuse...she came out disguised as the oracle...and the moment she opened her mouth - the audience applauded with delight upon hearing who it was.
Freddie (New York NY)
She also made a surprise appearance at the Roundabout's revival at the American Airlines Theatre. Everybody was talking before the show about the surprise guest, and when we heard her voice, she didn't disappoint. (I think she stayed in it for the full Roundabout run.)

I loved her on MTM. I miss her now that she's gone. Glad she was here though. She was wonderful.
Ron Horn (Palo Alto Ca)
Rest in peace Georgia! I will always remember you and your sweet voice and disposition in my high school German class at Walter Johnson!
Rick Deutsch (Massachusetts)
@Ron Horn Ron, you've captured perfectly my first thoughts upon learning about Georgia's passing. It was a delight to be in her presence at high school -- and I feel the same about having been in your presence. Hope you are well and prospering. Rick Deutsch Natick, MA

She portrayed the likes of a person that could just make us be a nicer human being. Thinking it was not all that hard for her to portray that character......
Margo Channing (NY)
I had the pleasure of seeing her in The Drowsy Chaperone, when she came onstage the audience cheered loudly. She was a delight. Loved her in the MTM show and she made it look easy. Hysterical turn on Raymond too. She was lovely.

Georgia Engel was truly a talented actress who always made you laugh no matter what role she was playing. In my mind, nothing better exemplified that talent than on the Mary Tyler Moore episode where she (Georgette) and Ted get married. Prior to the wedding ceremony, Mary asks Georgette if she is sure of what she is doing and whether she loves Ted. Georgette's simple response of "somebody has to" said with her infectious smile, is comedic talent at its finest. Your fans will truly miss you!!

Happy trails, Georgia! XXOO

Rest in peace, Georgia. I'll remember you most fondly for your recent and wonderful work in Annie Baker's plays.
Freddie (New York NY)
" recent and wonderful work in Annie Baker's plays." Remembering that doing, with Sam Gold, Annie Baker's marvelous material, she revealed after all those decades that she could do drama also - though it seemed from her choices once she proved that, that she was happier making people happy. Somehow, in 2012, Ed Asner and Georgia Engel were taking turns co-starring with the always fierce Michael Shannon, Ed on Broadway right after Georgia off-Brooadway. Summer 2012 flashback at 0:48 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ensRmwNeqFs Who can light up Chekhov with her voice? Who can take a nothing line And make it a reason to rejoice? Look, it’s Georgia with Sam and Annie I mean I’d see this “Vanya” just for her Nanny Strife is all around, but we can take it. Hippest cast in town, we won’t forsake it. We’re gonna make it after all! (We’re heading downtown for you, Georgia!) We’re gonna make it after all!

Funny enough, my husband and I watched a few episodes of the last season of The Mary Tyler Moore Show this past weekend, the episodes where Georgette was pregnant and had Mary Lou. She really was the perfect foil to the other players, and a delightful addition to the cast. She will be missed. RIP, Ms. Engel.
LisaLisa (Canada)
Very sad news. I loved her in Mary Tyler Moore and everything I saw her in since. She was a treasure.
Elizabeth Dick (Memphis TN)
I got on a bus going home for Christmas and sat down next to a pretty woman with a bag full of presents at her feet. “These are for my nieces and nephews” she told me. Only after talking for a while did I realize it was Georgia Engel. So kind, gentle, and down to earth. I learned much about her interesting life.
Heidi (Upstate, NY)
Always a joy to watch her performances.
brupic (nara/greensville)
MTM was a great show and she added a perfect counterpoint to ted.
AaronS (Florida)
Every actors brings part of themselves to their role. It was impossible for Ms. Engel's sweetness to not shine through...and her humility about being "no great shakes" as an actor makes her someone who is not only worthy of the highest awards for acting, but for life itself. We were the better for having her with us.
brian (egmont key)
Farewell, you and your characters were always quite dear to me, all those years ago.❤️
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
She seemed to be a person that nearly everyone would like to be friends with. A very soft-spoken charisma, and class.
Lisa (Mississippi)
I have been watching ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ on Hulu the last couple of weeks. Mary turned the world on with her smile, but that ensemble cast of characters still makes me laugh and they live on through those wonderful reruns. With the passing of Ms. Engel, I guess we need to start worrying about what sort of world we are going to leave behind for Betty White.
Lonnie (NYC)
Her voice was one for the ages. The good lord gives each of us a gift, for Georgia it was that sweet syrupy voice, a cleaned up version of Marilyn Monroe's sexy tease. That voice led her to one of the greatest roles in one of the greatest television shows of all time. As Georgette, the girlfriend of the blustery, buffoonish but harmless Ted Baxter she was the innocent who was making her way through the hard cruel world, a ray of sunshine in the dark Minnesota winters, who was the life support for a cast of character who had been beaten down by life's rough edges. And she became the same ray of sunshine to us the viewer who were equally beaten by those same edges. She was our TV friend, one of the reason we all wished we worked in that newsroom, Mary Richards was the other. In some ways that voice probably kept her from getting acting parts, it was too distinctive and too type casting but it also gave her the role of a lifetime. She will live on as Georgette , the perfect lasting memorial. Georgette who was the friend who was always there for you and if you ever met miss Engels as I did, you know she wasn't playing a part, that was her.
Donald (Boston, MA)
A gifted actress/comedienne and, for those of us lucky enough to have seen it, add, rapper!
Freddie (New York NY)
@Donald, regarding "for those of us lucky enough to have seen it, add, rapper!" I agree, she was glorious as the lead in "Half Time" at Paper Mill. Hoping that performance and production got taped in a way that it can be seen. I remember how nice she was along with the Ethel Merman cast of "Hello Dolly!" talking to us fans (a lot of us kids) back in 1970; then I heard that voice coming from the TV as Georgette a few years later and recognized the voice of "MInnie Fay" right away.
Beijing Charlie (Zanesville, Ohio)
She was also a guest on the Donnie and Marie Show. I talked to her backstage and she was exactly the same person as we saw on the mary tyler moore show.
Debbie (USA)
She was a sweetheart and will be missed.
Wolf Kirchmeir (Blind River, Ontario)
Georgette was always smarter than Ted. I liked that.
Guido Malsh (Cincinnati)
I'm sure she was as lovable off the screen as she was on it. RIP.
Allison (Richmond VA)
She was a delight and definitely one of a kind. She will be remembered fondly by all who watched The MTM Show.
Chris (Minneapolis)
To bad we couldn't clone her. We are in desperate need of a counter balance to what passes today for discourse.
myfiero (Tucson, crazy, Tucson)
She was a one and only. I loved her in Mary, seemingly dim, but always managed to get to the heart of the matter. I am surprised at her age, I thought she was older. Anyhow, we loved you Georgia Engels, you lived life well!
Raymond (New York, New York)
VERY sweet and hilarious. I met her once briefly, and she was completely unaffected and warm.
Brad Becker (Palm Springs, CA)
I absolutely adored her. I was in my teens when the Mary Tyler Moore show came on, and loved it when Georgia was in that week’s episode. I am saddened by her loss, even more so knowing that perhaps she would still be with us if she simply consulted a doctor. For those who view life through a religious perspective, God gave doctors the tools to heal. For goodness sake, let them do it. RIP, Georgia.
Carter Joseph (Atlanta)
Ted and Georgette's wedding episode is one of the show's best. Every line, every nuance, is character-driven, and we know these people as friends. When Sue-Anne comes in at a moment's notice, carrying a big box containing everything needed for an impromptu wedding, all bets are off. And Ted's pledge to Georgette, whispered into his ear by Murray (his writer) is perfection in writing and timing. Good work, Georgia Engel. Say hello to Mary for us.
Groucho (CT)
She was the woman who could turn on the world with her smile ...and that infectious voice. RIP Georgia.
Bridgman (Devon, Pa.)
A woman no doubt as sweet as her voice. She and the others on the Mary Tyler Moore show made me laugh on many lonely Saturday nights of my teens. What a lineup CBS had in the mid 1970s: 8:00: All in the Family 8:30: The Jeffersons 9:00: The Mary Tyler Moore Show 9:30: The Bob Newhart Show 10:00: The Carol Burnett Show Three crucial hours to forget that no one had invited me to whatever party there was that night.
Michael Simmons (New York State Of Mind)
@Bridgman That Saturday night line-up in the '70s reflected high quality standards that no longer exist. Georgia Engel was a singular and oh-so-soulful comedic genius. If one can find it, dig her performance in Milos Forman's first American film "Taking Off." Both she & the rest of the cast are brilliant -- as is the film.
Bill (BC)
I smiled as I read this. That’s what her presence did- it made you smile. Her work on the Mary Tyler Moore show was just so unbelievably sweet and sincere and guileless and her timing was amazing.
RM (Vermont)
Christian Science came out of the 19th century, when medicine was primitive and sometimes counterproductive to a patient's recovery. The power of prayer was probably as good as anything back then. But these days, foregoing medical diagnosis and treatment in favor of putting oneself in God's hands seems to be a losing proposition. I personally know of two people who failed to seek conventional medical diagnosis and treatment, and both died unnecessarily.
Duarte Ayala (Lancaster)
@RM As a pragmatic, I completely agree. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to argue with one’s faith. She died knowing she stayed true to her beliefs. (And I also lost a friend similarly.)
R. E. Hallam (Indianapolis In)
@RM As a Christian Scientist you are not prohibited from seeking medical treatment. Over many years my family has been helped by Christian Science.
M (Mendham, NJ)
@RM I had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Engel a number of times in the 1990's when she occasionally served as the librarian of the Christian Science Reading Room on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She was a genuinely loving person of absolute humility and graciousness. From what I understood of Christian Science, she was living her religion out loud. We should all be so blessed to live a life reflecting and sharing such love.
Missing the big story (maryland)
What no comments yet! In her way, Georgia Engel with that child-like voice and air of naivety, brought poignancy to her roles, at least what I saw. She was a unique and memorable talent.
Diane Foster (NY, NY)
Georgia Engel was too young to leave us, but what a treasure trove of memories she's leaving behind. I hope somewhere there are videos of the "Half Time" play--just visualizing her doing hip hop dance makes me smile.
gARG (Carrborro, NC)
Not seeking medical treatment due to religious beliefs? No wonder she was so convincing in her role on the show.
EdNY (NYC)
Ironic that someone who could evidently afford the best health care would apparently choose to forgo it.
EdNY (NYC)
@EdNY And sad, of course.
SweetestAmyC (Orlando)
I loved her character on Mary Tyler Moore. I wish I could have seen more of her wonderful acting.
Dheep' (Midgard)
What an original talent she was, RIP Ms. Engel. Your smile will light up the Heavens.
