Are You a Patient Person?

I really do not think I am a patient person in the slightest. However I do think I could be more patient if I trained myself to be. It is definitely not one of my virtues. I am patient on rare occasion which even I cannot recall recently. My dad is incredible patient and kind and my mom has patience to an extent unless you push her. I would say mine are interpersonal and daily hardships. I really try to focus on my breathing when I'm impatient or mad.

In 2012 a study in the journal of Positive Psychology identified three distinct expressions of patience, the type of patience I struggle with the most would definitely be daily hassles. I get aggravated when someone is coming to pick me up and they’re late, I get aggravated when I’m in a rush and the people I’m act like they have all the time in the world, I get aggravated at little things that shouldn’t bother me but do. I haven’t done a lot to control my impatience, but I really should start trying different things because if I’m in a bad mood and then I also become impatient, it’s not pretty. Some people think that being patient lets you appreciate things longer. I can understand but personally I’m the type of person that just wants to go go go and do things and just never take a break and I think that’s a big reason why I struggle with patience. But also it can be a good thing because if you just have the need to want to do things more than you get to experience more.

No, I do not think I am a patient person. I do think that I can be more patient due to what kind of situation I am in. I am also an impatient person who does not act out on my impatience. I keep most of it inside. There are definitely things that trigger my impatience more than others. The daily hassles is one of them. The author states in the article, “The good news is that same study found that patience as a personality trait is modifiable” (Goldfarb, 2018, para 7). This is good that it can be modified because impatience may be a bad thing for people who take it out of control. I will try and work on being patient because of this article.

Daily hassles is the type of patience I struggle with. Even the thought of nothing loading on Snapchat bothers me. The other two types don’t actually affect me in and negative way. When someone is upset it is easy for me to help them get back to normal. For example, “Researchers have also conducted that patient people exhibit more prosocial behavior like empathy, and were more likely to display generosity and compassion” (Goldfarb, 2018, para. 2). When experiencing this kind of patience, Interpersonal, I found that I tend to show compassion which proves me to be patient which shows that I do not struggle in this area. Another type of patience is life’s hardships, when experiencing something that makes me feel off I don’t get frustrated, I actually find a way to make me feel like myself again.

I believe I am not a patient person , I believe that because I get frustrated very easily. Often when things don't go as planned ,I just get angry. When somebody is running late or traffic on the way to school or even having to wait in line to get something. The time it takes out my dad just frustrates me. It's just something that happens and I wish I didn't get frustrated so much. I believe that patience is a serious issue when have today. Patience is something we all need in this world. If we had more people with patience in the world we would have such happier lives.

Most days of the year I’m considered to be a patient person. I don’t really care about things to the point I lose my cool. Of course if it’s a dire situation I freak out, but normal everyday occurrences don’t matter. I see life as everythings happens for a reason. So maybe if I wouldn’t have gotten pulled over by a cop I would have crashed my car. While some other people stress out, “I’m ashamed how quickly I lose my cool over these minor things.” (Clapham, 2018, para. 4). Last time I lost my cool was when my mom threw away important clothes given to me by family who passed. I was so impatient to find the clothes I started yelling at the other clothes that weren’t the clothes I was looking for. My neighbors thought I was crazy. I lose my patients when it involves something important and close to my heart. Otherwise it is not worth my time.

Patients is something everyone carries but the amount they are willing to use varies. I can say, I am not a patient person. My impatience is not an ideal character trait. After reading this article I believe the types of patience I struggle with is Daily hassles and Life hardships. Daily hassles is the main type of impatience I struggle with. I like everything to go at a reasonable pace; no waiting around. Goldfarb shares, “My jaw clenches when Hulu videos buffer. I huff and puff when stuck in a sluggish line at a coffee shop. Slow cars in the fast lane send me into a curse-filled tizzy. I’m ashamed how quickly I lose my cool over these minor things” (Clapham, 2018, para. 7). Clenching your jaw and huffing and puffing out of anger when things are not going at a fast enough rate is common with impatience. This type of impatience falls under the daily hassles. Feeling ashamed after getting irritated or annoyed is a familiar feeling, sometimes I just have to remember to take a deep breath and not to let it get to me.
Khia (Kent, Ohio)
I am not a patient person, but it kind of depends on what the situation is. If something exciting is going to happen then it would be hard for me to be patient or if i’m in a situation where someone is taking forever to do something, it is hard for me to keep my cool. If something is coming up in a couple of days that I am not looking forward to t then I will have patience. Impatience is not really a big problem for me because I know that the time is going to come. It’s not like it’s never going to happen. I usually lose my patience at school, for example walking in the hallways and people are walking so slow, “I’m ashamed how quickly I lose my cool over these minor things”(The Learning Network, 2018, para. 4). I can agree with this because I wish that I can keep my cool, but certain things send me over the edge where I show that I am being impatient and i’m annoyed. I try to keep my cool by taking deep breaths. I don’t think it’s possible to for me to always have patience.

Anna Goldfarb wrote an article on “How to Be a More Patient Person”. She writes about different strategies on how we can ALL work on being more patient. She writes how we identify ourselves when we seem to be losing our patience and how to solve it. In my opinion, I am a very patient person, it takes A LOT for me to lose it. So, what is patience? Is it staying calm when the food at a restaurant is taking forever to come out? Is it keeping a smile on your face when someone says something nasty and you don’t want to blow up on them? Or is patience what you have to keep when people put up/ keep out their Christmas decorations on July? “Patience, the ability to keep calm in the face of disappointment, distress or suffering, is worth cultivating. The virtue is associated with a variety of positive health outcomes, such as reducing depression and other negative emotions.” ( Goldfarb, 2018, para. #5).
Steven (Kent, OH)
Patience is a necessary characteristic that everyone has to a certain degree. However some people are more patient others in certain aspects of life. These aspects or expressions of patience are, interpersonal, life hardships, and daily hassles. Out of these three expressions I feel like I struggle the most with daily hassles. For example some of the things that make me lose my patience are having to do a majority of the household chores because my older siblings are extremely coddled and asked to do nothing. The chores really aren't even that time consuming or difficult it's just the unfairness that is extremely frustrating. But what even is patience? The Learning Network says that its “the ability to keep calm in the face of disappointment, distress or suffering” (Goldfarb, 2018, para. 5). I feel my patience is tested the most in the disappointment area of the definition either in myself or others.
Olivia Walker (Kent, OH)
There are many instances that cause impatience within me and also other people. I personally get frustrated very easily and it can occur often or very frequent, I believe it corresponds with what is happening in my life at that time. Impatience is not a huge problem for me. Sometimes it can be hard to get over, however I do not display my impatience much, or let it impact the way I act with others. I feel as though this is true to many others too, and impatience does not play a huge toll in how they go about interactions. There are three types of patience people deal with, and they include interpersonal, life hardships, and daily hassles. The type I feel I struggle with the most are daily hassles. Anything whether it has a minor or major impact in my life, it’s usually those small delays, words said, or actions taken that frustrate me the most. While in this article there are statements that impatient people show less empathy, compassion, and generosity, there are also listed pros. One statement from a study concluded that “patience as a personality trait is modifiable” (Goldfarb, 2018, para. 7).
Emily Kuntz (Kent, Ohio)
Many people struggle to stay patient in hard times, I do not think of myself as one of those people. I think I am a patient person and being impatient is not a big problem for me, although it used to be. Based on the article, I have previously dealt with being impatient during life’s hardships. I have struggled the most with figuring out how to come back from a minor setback or hardship without becoming impatient. I have grown out of my old impatient self and according to The Learning Network, “exhibit more prosocial behaviors like empathy, and were more likely to display generosity and compassion”(Goldfarb, 2018, para. #2). I used to be very impatient and get upset very easily with life setbacks that could easily be fixed. Not long ago I realized that being this impatient affects my health and I wanted to change that. I changed my way of thinking, I do not let setbacks make me upset and I now am more empathetic and generous towards others.
Amber Thomas (Kent, Ohio)
A lot of people struggle with patience in their lives, I am one of them that struggles with staying patient. I struggle the most with patients in life hardships. This means being able to find that silver lining and believing it will all get better no matter what life has hit you with. People who have a problem with patience and want to improve it should know that there is a way. It might be hard to believe that patience can be improved but a 2012 study “found that patience as a personality trait is modifiable” (Goldfarb, 2018, para. 7). Not everyone is born with patience so it’s good to know that it is still obtainable to those who don’t have it. Patience is a very important thing to have in life. Some jobs require patience and it would be difficult to perform that job if you didn’t have it. So for everyone who struggles with patience or just needs improvement, there is still a way.
Courtney Hosterman (Kent, Ohio)
I agree that on certain days I may be patient but most of the time I'm not patient. I feel like impatience is a problem that I struggle with as a person everyday. Based on the article I feel I struggle with two of the three types of patience, these are Daily Hassles and Interpersonal. According to The Learning Network, “My jaw clenches when Hulu videos buffer. I huff and puff when stuck in a sluggish line at a coffee shop. Slow cars in the fast lane send me into a curse-filled tizzy”(Goldfarb, 2018, para. #4). I personally feel that impatience is a struggle that every person struggles with at some point in there life. Especially me because I am a cashier at a grocery store and when I am waiting for the customer to pay I need to have patience to wait for them. The quote relates to this idea by being able to wait in a line, is just as similar as waiting to receive the money, I huff and puff because I am impatient. My struggles with the types of patience relates to the quote because I struggle with daily hassles just like the example of the hulu buffering. That really triggers me because I just want to continue to watch and not sit there and wait for it to load. As a Impatient person myself I conclude that Impatience is a worldwide conflict that needs to be solved.

Since I was a little girl, I have learned how to be patient. I used to attend extracurricular activities like ballet, basketball, diving and guitar lessons. Let us say if the class ended at 4pm, my mom would come to pick me up at 6pm. I did not mind because my mom was working and I had to be patient because if I had lost my patience it would not have taken me anywhere. In addition, that experience taught me to be on time or at least try to be on time.
Pravhakor 4D (YC CLIP)
I think everybody is a kind of patient person. They are worry about the future, sometimes they could be patient for failure work. Especially for me, I am too worry about unsuccessful work. I believe most of the people are worry about their unsuccess. When I am busy with my work, I am a patient person. To be a patient person, music is helpful for me. When I do important job, quite music helps me to be a patient person.

The article is very interesting because it shows you the benefits of the patience how to be a patient person. Patience is a virtue that not many people have, usually people are not patient because we live in a world that where everything happen really fast, so something we think that we are losing time. I consider myself an impatient person because I usually don’t like to wait, but I know that we have to be more patience, sometimes everything don’t have to be as faster as we want. I think that patient people think better and take better chose their life because they analyze everything.
Dermi 4D (YC CLIP)
I try to be a patient person. But this depends on how is your mood or how are you doing in the day. Furthermore, this can be depend on how some people treat you or behave aggressively. I try but I can lose my patience very fast. I work as a cashier and this is a stressful job because I have to deal with customers' bad moods and there are customers who complain a lot about everything and cannot wait for anything, they want you to do things very fast. This causes to lot my patience because they are not the only customers that with have at that moment on line. Also they only care about their selves, they offend you and tell you unpleasant things. But this is something that we have to learn to control we have to be a patient person because when we are impatient person we can do things or say things that would not be right and we can damage ourselves.
yoni4D (YC CLIP)
In this world, I think that we all have lose control at some point even if you are very patient. I don’t consider my personality as a patient person though some people think that my aspect seems very patient because when someone ask me for help even if I’m running out of time I still give my help. According to “2012 study in the Journal of Positive Psychology”, there’re different kind of patience: interpersonal, which is when you can’t control yourself to upsetting people or angry. Hardship is when we cannot find something therefore, you feel desperate and eventually become an impatient person. I feel identify with both examples because sometimes I try to be nice with nasty people but there is a limit and when they are beyond of those limits I explode. Lately I have been trying to use some strategies and different tools that the article has provided. I reckon that the patience is necessary if you want to succeed
Melany 4D (YC CLIP)
I consider myself as patient person, even though in some situations I cannot control myself like when some people think that they can talk about you without a consequence. I consider that this is disrespectful for me and for the rest of the people that hear about it. When I say that I am a patient person it is because in my family we consider that the time of everybody is important and that is why we always try to be on time. Also in some situations, you do not know if the other person has a problem or a disability, obviously that is not a reason to be impolite with the rest of the people. That is why I considered that be patient can be consider a virtue.
Brandon 4D (YC-CLIP)
When we are talking about being patient, we are talking about calm, listen and control. Be a patient person doesn’t mean that is a problem. Being a patient person could be helpful because you can keep calm and be serious in bad or important moments. People that is patient have more control about the problems of their life and more control of themselves. To be a patient person you need to take control of yourself and don’t lose the calm. In my case, I’m a patient person, when there are problems I usually just keep the calm and don’t lose the control because some people could think that to be patient they need to be ignorant and they start ignoring the problems. When this happen you just make a pile of problems in your head and after you going to lose the control and all the pile of problems will affect you. To be patient, first, you need to have control over yourself at the moment the problems are happening and keep calm while you’re looking for a solution.

I think that I am not an impatient person, I consider myself very patient. I know that sometimes I can lost my patience like all persons, but not constantly. I do not consider impatience a big problem for me. Sometimes I compare myself with another persons of my family for example my dad or my brother they are a very impatience’s persons because they easily can felt stressed like wait in one place for more than 30 minutes or when they are driving and there is a lot of traffic so they can felt mad so easy. I do not have those problems I consider myself a accessible person.

In life, People try to overcome difficulties that they face each day. Some of them, have capacities to control themselves and their actions to deal with these difficulties, but, other people are not able to handle it. Patient people are people who are able to accept or tolerate delays, problems, or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious. Most of those people want to be patient, but they cannot, for example they are impatient in traffic on the road, when they must wait in long line to do something or they have many tasks they must do it in the same time. In psychology I studied that all people live with psychological stress, but the degrees of stress change from person to other, and only the person who can manage his/her stress is the patience one. According to the article, I will be honest, I am not patient person and I do not like this character on me. When I wake up every day, I try to be patient but the tasks that I must do it each day and the difficulties that I face them, push me to lose my patient and become a nervous person, so I cannot control my actions. I have read a lot off article in psychology that help me to overcome this bad character because, when I am not patient I cannot enjoy my time or do what I suppose to do in good way. This character affects me badly even sometime I lose my appetite for the whole of day. People must learn methods that help themselves to become patient persons and enjoying their life.
Peter 4D (YC-Clip)
Most people do not have control when not everything is under their power but I am a kind of person who can be in the worst situation and I always have the same behavior. However, I have seen people that are not the same way as I am. For example, at my work, my coworkers are stress and actually do not have patience and they feel jealous at me because I always feel stress less. In my opinion, people should take things easy and stop drowning in a glass of water by the reason if we are calm every result will be a piece of cake. Like my teacher says keep it simple student that phrase makes me realize that things are not difficult as they are meant to be. Being patience it is very necessary in the view of a person who works many hours and attend to college at the same time. People should open their minds and think everything more clearly, because it is not good to have that weight on your own.
Ana4D (YC Clip)
I am a patience person, but sometimes there are certain situations that I cannot be controlled and that make me lose my patience. The last time when I lost my patience was when I was waiting at the bus stop to go to school and the bus was delay. I was very upset because I was going to be late. To manage that situation I said to myself that everything will come at the right time and I trust myself with that. I can notice that practice patience is the best way to deal with impatience. Some people are more impatient than other people are. Some show impatience in certain situations, and others show it in different situations.
Kevin 4D (YC CLIP)
Sometimes I have patience in my life but not every day, the problem is my parents that are inpatient people because they have the worst conversation about their family problems and spending money to pay home each month. My parents always fighting, sometimes they apologize to calm down and be patience. Furthermore, I cannot be patient because I failed some exams to go to college. I feel confused and stressed because those exams by low scores. Finally, I need patience to study quietly to be ready to go to college and my parents need patience just stay calm and live together to be honest.
Mamta 4d (YC CLIP)
After reading the article, “Are You a Patient Person”. I am a very patient person. For example, if I am in line waiting for something and somebody cut the line on get front of always calm myself down. I always do better job, whether it be a work, and home or job. I think patience is very important skill in life because it is always good deal with certain condition with people. My life would be much calmer and more enjoyable if I never get angry at anyone for something that I can control.
Yasmely4D (YC CLIP)
Why is it important to be a patient person? Patience is a value that every human being longs to be able to have and manage in the different circumstances of their life both. Personally, as with the family with the children, with the couple and in the work environment. I am not a patient person, but I try to be patient. For example, when I go to the doctor, I am not patient because I become very desperate because I do not like to wait.
Sahijpreet 4D (YC CLIP)
I think I am a patient person. Sometime I get impatience especially when something needs to get done and nobody is doing nothing. I tend to lose my patience when there are slow drivers and when people walk slowly in front of me. Patience is a very important quality for someone to have, and it is something many people lack because of the technology we have now. Our generation is a very impatient group. The last time I lost my patience was last week when my sister was not getting ready in time for school and we ended up getting to school a little late because of it. Based on that, I think that I mostly struggle with daily hassles.
Ruth 4D (YC CLIP)
First, this is a great theme to discuss. I consider myself a patient person until a certain point. For example, I can imagine being in school many years ahead and not thinking about how time goes. Nevertheless, I can be impatient when some people do not understand any advice that you have been repeating for a long time ago and then, they coming to you asking why that is happening. I remember once that I was on my way home and suddenly, the train stopped for forty-five minutes. At that moment I could not be patient because the doors were closed and I could not do anything. Regularly, trains have problems on weekends nights and my friend had to wait two hours in the train, which is exasperating. Being a patient person is important. We should know how to manage ourselves in each situation because if we are not patient, the problem can become bigger.

i think this article is really interesting. the reason i find it interesting is because it thought me patience is something you can work o n everyday. also the most patient people have somethings that throw them off. what are strategies to become more patient? is there ever a right time to be impatient?
Daijia Canton (New Jersey)
I can be rather impatient at times and it is honestly over the most silliest things. It makes me have an attitude, which my dad would call my “moody” sate. When people don't get things that I feel are simple I become impatient which isn’t fair to them. I know that everyone learns and understands things at different paces and should be more considerate to this fact. It is specifically people who are constantly confused when only if they had been paying attention they would not be as lost that are my issue. I also become antsy when people are moving physically too slow for me. I have also noticed that my irritation gets worse when I was already in a negative state of mind before encountering such situations. You could say I am rather a hypocrite in this area because the other day Charles was helping me with a project and he grew impatient with me because I did not understand the knowledge he was trying to share with me and therefore was asking “too many” questions.
Rachael Vaverchak (New York)
I am not an impatient person. Impatience has never really been a problem for me. What does make me lose my patience is when people don’t listen or ignore me. The last time I lost my patience was last night when my roommate wouldn’t take the time to walk 10 feet and take out the bag of bottles that were sitting in our room after I had just cleaned our entire place. Of all of the types of patients, I struggle with interpersonal the most. Currently, I use most of the techniques. Of all of them, connecting it to a larger story works best for me. Life would improve for me if I was able to successfully use these by allowing me not to get annoyed with other people as much.
Maddie (NY)
I definitely struggle with impatience in all aspects of my life. I like when everything goes smoothly and when things don’t I get really irritated and frustrated. Then I want to fix things quickly. I am naturally a very logical person and think over almost every action I take before I take it, but sometimes impatience gets the best of me. There are many things that make me lose my patience. When I have a setback or when someone or something is being extremely irritating. I read into things, so when I get a bad grade I feel that my whole life is over, and am not patient enough to let things play out. I honestly struggle with patience during all these types, but mostly I struggle with my patience during life hardships.
Josh Samuelsen (Cicero, NY)
It depends. I work on it when I can, and believe that it can be a problem, but at the same time, there are days where I’m totally calm and patient in the face of all the problems in life. A bunch of different things. Idiotic drivers who swerve into my lane. Excessive load times on stuff on my phone. Dealing with people who are angry at stupid stuff, like what I’m impatient about. I haven’t actually lost my patience very recently. I’m generally good at catching myself before I really get bad. If I do lose my patience then I tend to just get really snappy and sarcastic. I generally just step away for a second, remind myself that either these are people too, or that this person is important to me and I don’t wanna lose that. Probably the best for me would be reframing the experience, and it might improve my relationships with others, and provide myself a way to better interface with the rest of the world.

I’m not a patient person, and I think it can be a problem sometimes. Some things that makes me lose my patience, is waiting for my food at a restaurant, listening to people talk and talk and waiting so I can say something, waiting for something I’ve been looking forward to, and when teachers are giving instructions for too long. The last time I lost my patience, was last night when I was waiting for my mom to get out of the bathrooms so I could brush my teeth. My mom got mad at me because I kept asking her when she was gonna be done and kept knocking on the door because I was impatient. The type of impatience I struggle with the most is Daily Hassles. I struggle with this the most, because little things make me the most annoyed and impatient and gets to me. Some strategies that I use to deal with my impatience is taking deep breaths, and to be occupied with something when waiting. The patience-building technique that might be most effective for me is the identify your triggers. By using this technique my life could improve by being more patient with people and things. Learning how to be patient will change my life in a good way.

I’m always in a rush to leave everyday whether it be getting out of school as quickly as I can or going to get food and trying to stand inside for as short as possible, just to get the food and go. I feel that all of us could work on our patience in some way and some could also work on it more than others. I believe it’s becoming more and more difficult to be patient in our daily lives as time goes by because in today's world we are used to everything coming to us almost instantly, emails, text messages, to news from all over the world. I know being patient is a great life skill, and I know I need to personally do a better job at it.
Aeddon (Providence)
I feel as though I am a patient person in the majority of situations, but certain things I have very limited amounts of patience for. For the most part, I am patient when dealing with other people, and I haven't really had much experience with major setbacks in life, so I can't say I've been patient or impatient with those. However, in dealing with minor everyday annoyances I am much less patient. Anytime a youtube video buffers, or my cats are annoying me even a little bit more than I would like, I get impatient fast. Fortunately, the majority of these things are easily dealt with, either simply by closing and reopening an app or by pushing my cat away or petting it, none of these annoyances and impatiences cause me any harm, allowing for me to consider myself an overall patient person.
Nikki (Danvers)
I would consider myself patient with some people, but there are days where I can be very impatient towards other people. I never thought of patience as being a big aspect of my life; however, as I'm getting older I realize patience is very beneficial to me, my work, and to the people around me. It is mostly my family that causes me to lose my patience with their unusual thinking that does not perfectly align with my own. The last time I had lost my patience was when I was talking to my dad, in which his responses did not make any sense even though he states that he was right, and I was wrong. Sometimes he gets easily frustrated and loud. This also displays my struggle with interpersonal patience where I have limited patience towards one person. Therefore, I have been becoming better with becoming less impatient by stopping myself and thinking what it is like to be the other person. After calming myself down, I began to try understand the other person's point of view, especially my father's view. Patience teaches a person how to become more empathetic towards others, but it allows us to learn that things that are different or goes against what you think or want should not ruin your mood. Impatience takes away our ability to enjoy ourselves by becoming angered by the small things. Without anger, we can improve our lives and enjoy it while we can.
Avery Purtell (Danvers MA)
I would consider myself a patient person when it comes to things that cannot be controlled. Patience has never been an issue that heavily impacts my life. I do not get upset when there are long lines at a store, nor do I complain at a restaurant if my food takes a little too long. I think that daily hassle patience comes with an understanding that not everything in life is going to happen smoothly, and people should not let these small inconveniences ruin their entire day. On the other hand, I do lose my patience when my time is being wasted because someone else is inconsiderate. When things can easily be prevented, I do not have as much patience because carelessness can cause a major inconvenience in my day. The last time I lost my patience was over the weekend, I had plans to go out to breakfast with my brother and mom, and after I was going to the mall with my friends. Unfortunately, my brother slept until eleven, and I was very impatient because I had other things to do and no time to wait for him. The type of patience that I struggle with the most is daily hassle, although even then, I would still consider myself very patient compared to others. Currently, I deal with my own impatience by telling myself to not get upset over the little things and reminding myself that waiting a few extra minutes here and there will not greatly affect my day. I try to remember that the frustrating moments do not matter in the bigger picture.
Abigail Cash (Boston)
I believe that I am a patient person. However, there are definitely times where I find myself to become aggravated at certain things. Such as, when my mom critiques my driving, when my brother blames me for something I did not do, or when people around me are very negative and complain. I think the type of patience that I struggle with most is Daily Hassles and a little interpersonal. I mostly tend to get annoyed at the little things, when someone says a rude comment or has a snarky attitude. When someone is mad at me, like my brother for example, I try not to show that I am getting irritated by him. Therefore, I think that makes me mostly a patient person for being able to hold in my emotions and not show that I am getting impatient. Also, it is not just my brother that gets me to become angry, other people do its as well. However, I don't like to show that I am getting annoyed because I feel like that makes me come off as a negative person. According to the article, when people are more patient they exhibit empathy and generosity more than an impatient person would. Personally, I would rather be known for having these pro social skills. Therefore, when I can feel myself becoming impatient I just try to calm myself down and tell myself that it does not matter as much as I think it might.
Reilly Garvin (Danvers, MA )
I feel like I am an overall patient person but there are definitely times where I can get really impatient. The aspects in life that tend to make me lose my patience are usually small annoying things that are repeated. A specific thing that I have been noticing that causes me to become extremely impatient is when people are constantly complaining. This falls into the category of repeated small annoying tendencies which is what I said earlier. I find myself getting really angry and impatient when I listen to people always looking at the negative sides of events or circumstances, but I don’t let myself dwell on it too much. I become impatient for a short while but then move on. I would say that the type of patience that I struggle with the most is the Daily Hassles category. When I get impatient I don’t get overly impatient and it doesn’t get to a level where I feel like I can’t control it. It only lasts a little while and then I get over it. Overall, I feel like I am a very patient person.
Maddie Montanari (MA)
I try to be patient, I do get annoyed by certain things and sometimes it doesn’t take that long, but in general I think I am patient. When my mom doesn’t remember something I told her a day or so ago I get so annoyed with her because I don’t get why she just won’t remember conversations we have. When my dad walks in the door and immediately asks me to do chores I get annoyed, when my siblings hide something of mine and won’t tell me where it is I get annoyed. Even though all of these things annoy me and it may seem like I don’t have patience, I do. I may be annoyed on the inside but on the outside I hide it very well, I re-explain everything to my mom, I do what my dad asks, and I find my things without my siblings help. I think that the fact that I can suppress my emotions and just take a deep breath shows that I am a patient person. These things that annoy me happen every single day so the fact that I remain calm shows my patience. When I am feeling impatient I just tell myself to relax, everything I want will get done. I ask myself, what’s the rush? Why do I want to get this done so fast? Asking myself these questions makes me slow down and realize none of these people are trying to intentionally annoy, other than my siblings. I think the trick that would help me the most would be to re-frame the experience and connect it to a larger story. I think that trick would remind me that not every person is perfect and that everyone makes mistakes whether they mean to or not.
Joseph Foglietta (Danvers, MA)
I try to be a patient person, but adapting to a world where everything is instant is difficult. I try to maintain my patience, and to a certain degree I feel like my impatience is uncontrollable. It isn't fair for me to get angry if the drive through at Dunkin’ Donuts is packed in the morning. Or if someone does not answer my text back within five minutes of me sending it. Or having road work right near my house that adds an extra minute to my commute to wherever im going, whenever I pass it. These things are a few of the things that make me angry, but it's very challenging not be angry about this kind of stuff in my opinion. This morning, I was at Dunkin’ Donuts and the line was at least fifteen cars long. It didn’t make me late to school, but it threw off the flow off my day. I feel like interpersonal and daily hassles anger me the most concerning my patience. To deal with my impatience, I always try to find the silver lining in any small inconvenience I may have. Such as, “this drive through line is pretty long, but tomorrow is Thursday and it will not be as busy as a Wednesday”, or “my phone died and it takes two minutes for it to turn back on, but at least I’m disconnected from social media for a good amount of time.” Seeing the silver lining is hard, but it usually helps calm myself down when I feel myself becoming impatient.
Brecquel Comet (Hanover Horton )
Overall I'm a patient person, for example when someone is talking I listen and will always have something or advice to give back. Then there is the type of patience I struggle with the most which would definitely have to be the random daily struggles I go through. When someone is coming to pick me up and they’re late that is one of my biggest pet peeves, I get irritated when I’m in a rush and the people around me act like they have all the time in the world, which they may but still, I get aggravated at the little things that shouldn’t bother me but do. I haven’t went anywhere or asked for help towards controlling my impatience, because I feel that I don't have issues with it. If I’m in a bad mood and then I also become impatient, it’s never good because I just become blah and I don't really have emotions. Some people think that being patient lets you appreciate things longer, which I can understand but personally I’m the type of person that just wants to get on the go and stay on my feet to do things and just never take a break and I think that’s a big reason why I struggle with patience. But also it can be a good thing because if you just have the need to want to do things more than you get to experience more.
Jakob Comet (Horton)
I'm a relatively impatient person. I'm good at dealing with people and being patient with them. I am usually the first on to see the silver lining. If someone is rude i have no patients., daily tasks make me so aggravated and i have no patients. I get angry so easy. I do nothing to change it because i kinda enjoy how easy i can get fired up.
Lauren Comet (Hanover, Michigan)
I think I am a patient person, sometimes I get impatient especially when something needs to get done and nobody is doing anything. Something else that I lose my patience to is my brother there are 3 of them, if they all are not listening then I get angry with them and faster then most times. Most times I am only impatient when something is on the line. I also have learned that if your not patient people can just get mad at you then you make others impatient and nothing will get done because in the end you will just fight with others.
Ashlin Comet (Hanover-Horton )
I believe I am an impatient person because of how quickly I can become upset. I tend to loose my patience when there are slow drivers and when people walk slow in front of me. I have specific times for everything and those slow movers can mess up the rest of my day. I would say Daily hassles are what bother me the most because I have many things to do on a daily basis and if something happens early on it tends to carry with me throughout the rest of the day.
Abby Comet (Horton)
In general, I kind of think myself as an impatient person, and sometimes very impatient. It really all depends on what mood I am in, if I'm more in a bad mood or I am being rushed I would say I have less patience than normal. But if I am in a good mood I'd say I have more patience. When I do lose my patience I usually feel awful afterwards. I feel like there could have been a better way to handle that situation, I don't like people thinking of me as a rude person so when I have the chance to apologize I take it. I don't like making people feel like they have done something wrong when it's just me having a bad day.
Richard Comet (Hanover, Michigan)
I think I am a pretty patient person when i comes to certain things. when i am waiting for a video to load or stuck in traffic I am pretty patient. But when I have to wait for someone to do something and they just mess around I get very impatient because they are wasting my time I could get somewhere or get something done.
Carson Comet (Hanover Horton Highschool )
I believe I am a patience person because I have done may things that have helped me learn it over the years. Patience is a very important quality to have, and it is something many people lack because of the technology we have now. Our generation now is a very impatient group. In society, everything is fast-paced and is supposed to work well, and we just continue to improve this. I struggle the most with is interpersonal because I can get mad pretty easily.
jenna comet (hanover horton high)
My patience only runs so long then my patients is gone. Impatiens can be a big problem for me if I’m already irritated or having a bad day. Things that make me impatient is dumb people, or people taking their sweet time and not caring about the people that's having to wait because of them. Patients I deal with most is Daily hassles. Strategies I use is trying to relax.
Noah S. Comet (Hanover )
I think that I am a pretty patient person. Usually my patience really gets tested when I am fishing or driving because they are both things that take a very long time but I seem to manage pretty well. Some things that make me lose my patience very easily is when a very obvious problem cannot be solved or if somebody is being really annoying and I can’t do anything about it. The last time I lost my patience was this morning when my sister wasn’t getting ready in time for school and we ended up getting to school a little late because of it. Based on that, I think that I mostly struggle with daily hassles.
ethan comet (horton)
I used to be really bad and impatient. As I got older I became more patient with a lot of things. For example: people, work, school, and home life. There is always a way to become more patient, you aren't just born with it. I struggle with daily hassles. To me those are the easiest to get annoyed at and become angry and impatient. Dealing with these more often will hopefully get me to do better in those situations.
Emily Comet (Horton)
In sometimes I feel that I am a patient person, but there is some times in my life when I am not a patient person at all. Impatience is not that big of a problem for me, but if i am really annoyed with someone or something then my patience will be gone. There are certain things that make me lose my patience more than others. For example, when someone doesn't know a fact that was clearly discussed earlier I get annoyed. However, if someone is driving slowly or there is a long line, I am going to get annoyed but I will soon get over it. Based on the article, the types of patience I struggle with the most are interpersonal and daily hassles.
Trent Comet (Hanover)
I believe I am a patient person. I don't get real mad or irritated with anything very easily. If i do lose my patience, its usually because somebody is taking a long time doing something, such as driving slow on a 55 speed limit road. If I would had to say my type of patience, I would say daily hassles. Like I said before the only things that makes me lose my patience is probably just driving. People just make me mad when they are driving slow and that's when I lose my patience. I don't need anything to help me be patient because I rarely get inpatient.
Jeremy Comet (Hanover)
I do not have very many issues with patience with people in real life. I do not see it as a huge issue for me. If anything were to make me lose my patience, it would be someone who is trying to make something difficult, even when they know they are in the wrong. The last time I lost my patience was when no one would finish the objective on Hightower when I needed to complete a contract. I believe interpersonal patience is the hardest for me, since it is the one that includes other people the most.
Darren (Comet)
I am absolutely not a patient person. I have enough self control to avoid annoying people with it but I am very impatient. It's difficult to maintain calm while getting impatient though. The only person who points it out to me is my mother. She always says I need to be more patient.
Maxwell Comets (Hanover)
Daily hassles is something that I have a hard time working on. To help deal with my patience, I use many techniques. I think, "would this matter in twenty-four hours?" I think that if I identify my triggers I can become a better person overall. If I identify them I feel like I can overthink it and conquer it.
anthony comet (hanover)
I think I am a very patient person but I do sometimes feel the need to force things to hurry up due to stress and or when I feel rushed. If I ever feel like I need to hurry something up or do something as fast as possible I slow down and take time to collect myself and take deep breaths. I believe nothing really makes me annoyed but ive been annoyed so many times I just learned to keep myself under control.
CassieComet (hanover highschool)
Being patient is one of my biggest downfalls I think that is something I struggle with because my personality is on the go and I like to get my stuff done the fastest and most efficient. You won't see me sitting around don't nothing if I have things to do. If I am sitting around its because I have my things done. Things that make me lose my patients are people who don't wake up the first time they were woken up. Or when people don't listen to me and then afterwards ask what because they didn't listen the first time. I don't have patients for people who are being annoying or irrelevant. Things that I do to help is get out of those situations. I believe whats meant to be will be
frank comet (horton)
I would consider myself to be a somewhat patient person. For example, if I was waiting in a line to get somewhere, I would find a way to occupy my time while waiting, and still be aware that we live life on a strict schedule. Obviously I would always find ways to spend a shorter amount of time on something, but I can always be patient if necessary. I also find that when I am patient and actually focus on something, as opposed to rushing, I always do a better job, whether it be doing homework, or any other activity outside of school. I feel that patience is a necessary skill in life because it is great to have patience when dealing with certain situations with people, that could occur at any time.
alyssa.comet (Hanover Horton high school)
If I am patient the people around me determine if I am or not. While I am driving I have no patience for dumb drivers, people that go under the speed limit, and people who decide to randomly take turns with no turn signal. I struggle most with daily hassles, I lose my patience when I am driving, when people argue and they are wrong, when people interrupt me and when people chew with their mouths open. The last time I lost my patience was when I was responding to a cardiac arrest and the driver in front of me decided to go 10 mph under the speed limit and wouldn’t move, I was angry because they are delaying the response time and if we could save that person they were delaying treatment time which could mean life or death for that person.
Katelyn Comet (Hanover Horton )
I'm a very impatient person. Especially when i want to get something done and someone or something is preventing me from doing it. I struggle a lot with daily hassles. If its a bad day i end up just being mean to people for no reason. I currently just try to keep my mouth shut and wait.
Shelby Comets (jackson michigan)
I think myself as a pretty patient person when it comes to certain things. This is not me saying I never get impatient, because I do, i'm just saying it doesn't often lead to me ruining my own day. I do get a little agitated when people say they didn't know how to do it when they've done it before, or just get snotty for no reason. However, as it says in the article, almost none of these situations put me in a state of danger so why was I getting agitated?
Brinna Comet (Hanover Horton)
I am not a patient person; and I blame it on my generation. In our current society everything is fast; and we continue to work on making it faster just for our convenience. I have been fortunate to experience the fast times of the internet as I grow up. However, I believe this is where my lack of patience has stemmed. It is now become a normal for everything to be accessible in a split second and when it is not, I get really frustrated. I am so used to having everything handed to me quickly that I never really learned how to be patient. I get so stirred up when my snapchat will not load, when someone cuts in front of me in traffic, or when my assignments won't turn in on google classroom when I only have a certain time to turn it in. So much so that sometimes it actually ruins my day. Sometimes I feel like I should just take a step back and relax and be thankful for what I have.
leo johnson (hoggard highschool, wilmington NC)
In general, i think myself as a pretty patient person. It takes a lot for me to get mad or angry. This is not me saying i never get agitated, because i surely do, i'm just saying it doesn't often lead to me ruining my own day. However, i have noticed that waiting has been more of a struggle recently. I recall sitting in class waiting for the bell to ring and it feeling like an eternity had passed before it finally rang. I also went on several plane rides recently and and i remember thinking “God, when is this going to end”. However, as it says in the article, almost none of these situations put me in a state of danger so why was i getting agitated? Was it the stress of all my classwork that made it so that i wanted to escape first period so badly or am i simply an impatient person?
Ella (New Jersey)
I think that I am usually a patient person when it comes to strangers but when I am dealing with friends or family I tend to be more impatient. If my parents or sisters say something that is obvious to me, I have to concentrate on making sure I don't respond in a snarky way. I have to keep calm and understand not everyone understands what I d about certain topics. There are certain things that make me lose my patience more than others. For example, when someone doesn't know a fact that was clearly discussed earlier I get annoyed. However, if someone is driving slowly or there is a long line, though I am annoyed, I understand there is nothing I can do and try to shake it off. The type of patience I struggle the most with is interpersonal, like I said before. I am very good at dealing with life hardships because of my experiences in the past and I am okay at dealing with daily hassles. One technique I try to use in situations where I get impatient is taking a second to think if there is something I or the people around me could do about it. If there is, I get annoyed, but if there isn't a simple solution I try to think about other positive things to get my mind off of it. Though i attempt to use this technique, sometimes I forget. My life would be much calmer and more enjoyable if I never got angry at anyone for something that I could have controlled.
Ayman (Uttar pradesh, India )
Patience is a virtue. However, are we really humans with all these virtues. I mean, we set a bar too high for a common man to match. God, for example is the most benevolent, powerful and yet the most patient of all. However, the phrase in most of our religious textbooks emphasise " If you divert you shall face 'the wrath of god'". He isn't different from us after all....or she!! I don't think patience is a path any of us is going to follow. In this new order of a world we are so curiously developing and having even done so, patience wasn't a virtue...it was an inherent flaw....ask any third world country or even *Richie Rich*s of the world....one one's patient. We might as well accept the fact. After all, all of us didn't wait quite a bit to write this article....did we?
Nants Davis (Norwood, Mass)
how great to read the feedback! I am not alone in my impatience. whew. quote I love: Patience is not just the ability to wait. It's how we behave while waiting. ---Joyce Meyer historically, I am more patient when I have a daily meditation practice. ( Altho, I did once shock a friend when I erupted with road rage just after leaving a weekend meditation retreat.) I considered it a MAJOR victory yesterday when I didn't blow a gasket after spilling quinoa all over my kitchen floor. the greatest thing about retirement (7 months now) is not having to deal with ( be patient with) the negative residents in the affordable housing where I worked.
Nathalia (Colombia)
I consider patience as an important quality for human beings nowadays, because of this hectic world we live in. I consider myself as a patience person, altough I have to change some aspects that in some occassions make me an impatient person. For example, I loose my mind when I have to learn new stuff as new software, or when I want to read something I like but first I have to do some other duties that I don't like, now I'm struggling with English language, because I just want to be able to speak it fluently, but I realize it is a process that needs huge amounts of time and patience, so I struggle the most with daily hassles. When I have to calm down, usually I concentrate on my breathing and thinking everything is possible and there're worst situations.
Ava Cohen (Hoggard Wilmington NC)
I think that patience is a very important quality to have, and it is something many people lack because of the technology we have now. I would consider myself a fairly patient person, but it is something that I have had to work on. I struggled with daily hassles the most. I remember the impatience and frustration I felt when waiting in the traffic on the way to school everyday. The older I got, the more often I felt impatient. I hated that I couldn’t sit through a class with a rambling teacher or wait for the bell to ring, so I decided to do something about it. This article would have been really helpful a year ago because I had trouble figuring it out on my own. Whenever I started to feel impatient, I just took a few deep breaths, and I would tell myself that there is nothing I can do but wait. It took some time, but I was eventually able to deal with things that used to make me lose my patience without ever feeling angry. I’ve found that life is a lot easier when you can sit through traffic without letting it ruin your day. I think that controlling my impatience has made me more calm, focused, and happy, just like the article states.
Drew Gonzalez (Hoggard High School, Wilmington, NC)
I feel that I am not a very patient person at all and that I could definitely work on being more relaxed and calm. “I huff and puff when stuck in a sluggish line at a coffee shop.” I feel that this line speaks very much to who I am as a person and also how I need to get rid of this. I’m always in a rush to leave everyday whether it be getting out of school as quickly as I can or going to get food and trying to stand inside for as short as possible, just to get the food and go. I feel that all of us could work on our patience in some way and some could also work on it more than others. I feel the first way to start is to feel less rushed all the time and just take a minute to relax and enjoy yourself vs just thinking about what’s next. We as human beings are always worried about what’s next and what’s tomorrow but we never ask ourselves, what’s today, and what is going on right now. If I have to wait two extra minutes to get my coffee is it really going to make a difference? If society were to just think that way I think personally we would be much happier as a whole and that would make for better lives for everyone.
Thia Mac (Hoggard Wilmigton, NC)
If i'm being honest I am not the most patient person that I know. I am however, patient with my siblings like on the days that they are in a talkative mood. My siblings are adopted and come from a bad background of many foster homes before they were adopted by my family so when they came to us I had to learn how to patient really quickly. I had a really hard time at first because being an only child sharing my toys was not fun. What made it worse was when my brother started breaking them. I tried to stay calm as long as I could but it was really hard. It has gotten better after we adopted them but it has still been hard. I think living with them has made me a more patient person but, I do think I could use a few techniques to make me and my mom more patient people. There is one thing that really gets my blood boiling though, when people started making constant sound effects like, clicking, tapping, or popping. I’ll have someone sitting next to me in class and they’ll just start tapping their pencil on the desk or tapping their foot and I will get so irritated with it but of course I won’t say anything because I don’t like to tell people what to do. So I sit there quietly while they tap trying not to pull my hair out. I could really use a few methods of how to patient when it comes to that.
Erika Goth (Aspen CO)
I do not think I am a particularly impatient person and I don't find patience to be a problem for me, although I do have my moments. I loose my patience most often in traffic on my way to and from school. Im my own life I struggle most with interpersonal impatience and keeping myself calm in frustrating situations. The strategies I use to deal with patients is talking my self down, telling myself that I can't control the traffic, and that it isn't the worst thing in the world.
Ashlyn Dunn (Aspen, CO)
Based on the article, the types of patience I struggle with the most are interpersonal and daily hassles. I believe that this is not just me though. Our generation now is a very impatient group. In society, everything is fast-paced and is supposed to work well, and we just continue to improve this. Which in return, we expect everything to work when we want it and how we want it. A personal example is myself becoming impatient when Netflix won't load or when my phone is taking too long to do something. As a generation, we all have some type of impatience and we can only thank technology and the advances of it.
Drew (Aspen, CO)
I believe that I am significantly more patient on the outside than the inside. If I am pissed off because the waiter forgot about my food at a restaurant, you would never know it. On the inside, I am cursing out the waiter for being so terrible at his job, but when I talk to him, you've never seen me so polite. I guess that comes from growing up in a family who looks for any little problem with anything so that they can chew out the people in charge to get free stuff. Sitting back and watching this for so many years has turned me into the polar opposite of them. Sometimes I wish I was able to express my impatience more, because I feel thats it's probably not too healthy to keep all of that stuff inside.
james (aspen)
No, because sometimes I will not wait for more than an hour or more because I try and get whatever needs to be done done and I also get impatioant in trafic.
Leslie (Aspen, CO)
I am a patient person most of the time, the only time I do get impatient is when I'm driving behind a really slow car on the left lane, which is the passing lane. I also get really impatient when I'm stuck in traffic for a long time, but what I do to reduce my impatience is by distracting myself with music.
Maddie Burns (Aspen, Co)
Am I a patience person? — Are you a patient person? Do you think impatience is a big problem for you? No not even in the slightest, I have very little patience for most everything and everyone in my life. The more I like you as a person the more patience I will have but I still get set off so easily. I have pretty bad road rage, but I don't do much about it (I just yell at everyone even though I know they cant hear me) so its always a treat to be with me in the car, I get set off when people ask me to repeat something I have said especially if its irrelevant ( i have been trying to work on that one though). I get mad when people chew really loudly though I usually don't say anything but it drives me crazy. I think I try to keep most of my anger inside but I know it still comes out al ot.
Adam Proctor (Hoggard Wilmington NC)
As kids we all can be impatient at times, but it can be for many different reasons. I personally become impatient with daily hassles, which is one of the three distinct expressions of patients founded in a Study by Journal of Positive Psychology in 2012. I am the type of person that wants to move through the day with little to no interruptions therefore I get impatient over the smallest things in life, from the lines at grocery stores, waiting for the stop light to turn green, to Netflix buffering. I believe it’s becoming more and more difficult to be patient in our daily lives as time goes by because in today's world we are used to everything coming to us almost instantly, emails, text messages, to news from all over the world. I know being patient is a great life skill, and I know I need to personally do a better job at it. One thing I have started doing is not worrying so much about the little things in life and focusing on what really matters.

Eventually, I will get where I am going and get my food. So why do I care how fast it takes? People and me included, are so caught up in doing everything as fast as possible. I think we really need to step back and just appreciate we are able to do these things; instead of rushing through them as quickly as we can.

No, I am not a patient person. I always get mad when I’m watching something on youtube and it buffers every couple of seconds or an add pops up in the middle of the video. I go crazy when I am trying to get home after soccer practice and a 10 minute drive turns into a 30 or 45 minute drive. I can’t stand when I need to tell my parents something but they are already talking to my sister of each other and then I forget what I had to say. My patience with other people is not were good and most of the time ends up with me getting frustrated. I wonder what are some good techniques involved in dealing with impatience?
ER (Hoggard High School Wilmington, N.C)
I am sure most people like to think they are patient, but they are really not. Like if they manage to convince themselves they are patient all of a sudden they will become patient. I am one of those people, I admit. It is a feeling all to familiar I'm on my phone trying to google something and that little blue bar is almost all the was their saying its loading and then it stops so I try and press the reload button and it just makes it worse. You know those things that you know are not that big of a deal but they still bother you. Well that's mine, hopefully I am not the only one that feels this way.

I'm not a patient person. My patience is tested when Something is going very slowly, because it is inefficient. The last time i lost my patience was when I was waiting for my food at a diner, and it took way longer than it should have to get the food out. The type of patience I struggle with most is Daily hassles. When I lose my patience, I usually try to distract myself or do a breathing exercise. A patience building technique from the article that would be most effective is Be realistic. This would change my life because it would force me to look at the bigger picture and help me in the long run.
Max Shapiro (Burnt Hills, New York)
Being impatient seems to have been created with the arise of first world countries and responsibilities. We have become so reliant on everything coming to us instantly that any minor slow of things becomes the end of the world. As a hunter patience is a requirement. I can not expect a giant buck to appear fifty yards in front of me standing perfectly broadside. Now that can happen but it happens rarely and i can't be expecting it. You have to wait. I don't know where the deer are going to be every time but I have a idea where they could be and so that where I go. Some impatient hunters now bait the deer but i think that is wrong. That is not a ethical way of hunting. That would be like going to the zoo and shooting a dear in there artificial habitat. You must be patient. If you want to be more patient person you don't have to take up hunting as a pastime I understand that some people are against it and hate the ideology. Find something that requires patients and do not use the short cuts of modern technology.
Julie Kee (Danvers, Massachusetts )
I try to present myself as patient, but in reality I'm the most impatient person I know. Like Ms Goldfarb, I sit seething whenever I have to wait for more than a minute for something as fast as a drive through or a checkout line, or the thirty seconds it takes for my computer to load. I have things to do! And places to go! Waiting can build up my anxiety; if I'm not doing anything I'm wasting valuable time. Mostly I find myself struggling with life hardships and daily hassles, and interpersonal patience seems to be the only type of patience I possess. Some ways I reduce my impatience is by distracting myself while I wait. In heavy traffic I crank up the music. While standing in long lines at McDonald's I try to create as many words as I can with the letters in menu items. Waiting for Netflix to load typically results in time spent on social media. In especially stressful situations I may even start biting my nails, a habit I can never seem to break. None of these truly distract me from the feeling of time being wasted, but they help to keep me from losing my patience in a way I'll regret. Overall, I typically find myself able to remain patient on the outside even if I'm internally losing my mind from waiting. I know that lashing out and acting on that impatience will only make a situation worse for everyone involved, but by keeping myself occupied and distracted, I am able to remain calm and relaxed.

Gabrielle Sherrick (Danvers, MA)
Sometimes, being patience can be very hard for me. One of the large things I struggle with is when I put a lot of time and effort into something to have it not work out. As a runner, I train very hard. When running 20-30 miles a week, i believe that i'm trying my best. Some race days, however, I will not perform as well. I'll become frustrated with myself and think of how it may not even be worth it. The biggest thing that helps me be patient with training and everything in life is to enjoy the ride. Training alongside my teammates I've gotten to have some of the hardest, funniest, and memorable practices. People have off days. I have to keep reminding myself that as long as I work hard, I will see improvement, even if it's just a little bit. Caring more about how hard you work and those moments I've realized is a lot more important than being disappointing with the end goal if things don't work out. Instead of being angry I now get determined to improve so I can get the end result I wish, and learn to be patient in waiting to get there.

I feel like , in terms of behavioral analysis or anything of the sort (I'm not a psychologist so don't quote me) it is a completely individualistic thing that cannot be describe as one way or another. I don't see people as impatient or patient. I feel like it is situational, personal, and based on other various outside stimuli or factors. Taking that into consideration, using myself as an example, I would say that there are various and specific things that can really set me off. I feel like there is a different between irritability and impatience. So , everyday little things that irritate me I don't really think test me patience I think that their goal is to annoy me and they achieve it. However, When I would classify myself as growing impatient is when something unintentionally triggers me or sets me off. I feel that Impatience is a little more intense than irritated I feel as though irritation is a feeling of annoyance whereas impatience is a form of anger. Now, circle back to what I just said, I would not classify myself as an angry person, but an easily annoyed person. Therefore I would not be classified nor would I classify myself as an impatient person.

i know how to stay calm, when people ask me questions they already know. or if im playing in a game i stay calm.

Simple, always impatient.
Jaden H (Hoggard Wilmington, NC)
Personally I think that I can be impatient. Although I feel like I am way more impatient with certain people than others. If I am at school, and my friend is doing something stupid or annoying I am pretty patient with them. As well if someone I don’t know asks me a really dumb question I am able to stay pretty calm. I think I struggle with interpersonal the most. The reason is that if my little brother asks a stupid question or is doing something very annoying I have very little patience for it. I know it partly has something to do with the fact that it’s my brother but still. I don’t have very much patience for anyone in my family that does that. I also lose some my patience with my friends sometimes. I don’t know why I get so annoyed but the worst thing is when someone asks a super obvious question. It just sets me off. I know this isn’t the best quality to have so I have been really trying to work on it. I try to keep an open mind when someone asks a dumb question. I think it is a step in the right direction that I can identify the fact that I have a hard time being patient when people do these sort of things, because now when someone does it I take a step back and I remember that even though it is annoying it doesn’t affect me. I have been pretty successful using this strategy the last few times, it helps me a lot.
Ray Schwartz (Wilmington NC, Hoggard )
Me personally I am a very patient person. I have spent a lot of time waiting for something or someone. When I go to any store I would just wait quietly in line. The only time I get impatient is when I am late to something and i'm waiting for my mom. The only other time I am impatient is when someone else is bothering me like when I am sitting next to a stranger and they start moving their leg or their music is very loud or they are just really really annoying. I remember when i was younger, I was so impatient. When ever I would go out to eat with my parents, I would not sit still. I would just bother my parents about when the food would be ready, because I was usually very hungry. But as I got older (still young) I started to look around. I started to look at other kids that were much younger than me. I would watch them bother their parents and just embarrass them selves and their parents, so I said to myself “I don't want to be that.” I think another thing that help me become more patient was that every summer my part of the family would drive twenty two hours from my town to Minnesota to visit my grandparents. I would sit in the back seat for hours staring out the window of the car, waiting to get there. I didn't bother my dad while driving because it would not help getting there faster. Now as a older individual (high school teen), I think of thing. Just anything that pops into my brain or I would meditate in place until the thing I needed done happens.

After reading the NYT article, "Are You a Patient Person", I feel that I'm decently patient. Based on the article, I think I deal with life hardships the most. I can get impatient quickly and easily, but I usually try to find my mistake and fix it for future events. Also, I try to look at the positive side of things because my parents taught and encouraged me to do so. One of my strategies is to think of the consequences from being impatient and snapping back to my peers, family, and elders. These are some of my strategies and my status on patience.

Everyday, me and plenty of other people all around the globe loose are cool over the slightest things. It’s embarrassing how quickly I can get aggravated, but it only seems to happen in certain situations. It tends to fall to where my focus is. Let's say a web page is taking far longer than it should to load, alone I would be boiling, but if there is someone else by or talking to me, I could care less than when the page loads. It doesn’t matter how big or small the inconvenience is, it seems my temper is always affected by the people around me. Even when I’m driving, I never express any anger towards anyone with passengers inside, but in my mind I am, and I do somewhat fear what I will be like driving by myself sometimes.
Maren Howard (Wilmington, NC, Hoggard High School)
Whether i’m patient or not depends almost entirely on my mood. If i’m in a bad mood, I can get so mad over the littlest things. I get so mad over the stupidest things. For example, if my brother walks into my room when i’m in bed and then doesn't close the door when he leaves, my body just fills with rage. I feel like that's pretty understandable though, considering I was already in bed and I would have to get out of bed to close the door. If I’m in a great mood though, nothing will bother me. In the article, Anna Goldfarb explains how she gets mad whenever things are loading. I completely agree, but only when i’m tired. I would get a little irritated at that when i’m happy, but it wouldn't even compare to how mad I would be if I was in a bad mood. Especially if i’m trying to watch something fun to get my mind off things, and an ad for something I would never even consider purchasing comes right at me. A lot of people have road rage. The thing with me though, is that I don't have road rage at all. Which is hard for me, and probably you, to believe. If someone is going slow in front of me, I don't get mad at all. I mean, obviously, if someone were to drive straight in front of me or cause a crash, I would be raging, like anyone else would. I think the whole reason behind this is because I just love driving too much to get mad while doing it. Driving is my time away from everything and everyone and i’m not going to let someone going 30 in a 45 ruin that.
Autumn Grant (Hoggard, Wilmington, NC)
I’m not the most patient person but I’m certainly not as a whole an impatient person, I’d say I’m in the middle with specific things that get me aggravated. I’ve noticed in situations where a problem could easily be solved but I’m not being heard out I get highly impatient until I finally get my idea, question or suggestion out. But, in say, a situation where I’m waiting in line for coffee, I’m not as impatient and usually wait it out despite how long I realize I’ve been standing there once I get my order. In my opinion, impatience is a learned characteristic depending on what the impatience is about. When people are emotionally distressed, (hungry, tired, etc.) it’s a natural instinct to grow impatient. A prime example would be babies, they’re hungry and they cry if they are but if they aren’t fed in a timely manner their cries get louder. Instinctual impatience is very different from impatience caused by slow WiFi or people that walk slow- this would be learned impatience from constantly getting what you want faster than ever. Some days we just have to breathe and remind ourselves to slow down once in awhile, maybe then we won’t be up in arms when our coffee takes longer to make than usual or there’s a morning traffic jam.
Dominic Kassulke (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
As an impatient person myself, I can relate to just about everything and more to this article. With the the heavy traffic (that’s really not that heavy), to the commercial breaks on Sunday during my favorite teams football game. I can feel myself dying on the inside when i’m waiting outside for someone when they said they would be outside in a minute! I don’t think i’m alone when I say that being impatient sucks, but when things don’t take long, it feels so good! In my opinion I don’t think there is any way i can train myself or take away my impatience. I don’t really know if this is being impatient but whenever someone is chewing loudly next to me it’s one of my biggest pet peeves. I guess i’m super impatient on if they ever are going to finish their food. Also whenever someone is talking after i started talking before them because they think there conversation is more important, it absolutely kills me having to listen to them blabber on. The story says that there are 3 distinct types of patience. The 3 types are Interpersonal, Life Hardships and daily hassles. Although my impatience is bad I think I have the best kind of impatience because some people have to deal with coming back from injuries in sports or dealing with angry and depressed people who you think shouldn’t be like that. All my impatience is, is just being annoyed at the little things in life that a lot of other people get annoyed by also.
Jake Morris (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
I feel like most people in modern days society are considered to be impatient people. Since everything in this now modernized era is starting to move faster we get angry when things revert back to being slow. When things move slow we feel that it is wasting our time. This happens everyday of our lives. For example slow cars in the fast lane send me into a cursed filled tizzy and standing in a long slow line to buy something such as a coffee makes me impatient. In modern society we feel that we need to rush to the next thing right away, but in reality it is actually better to have to wait for things sometimes because when we wait it teaches us a lesson. This lesson could be one of many, but usually in my opinion it is one telling us to stop and smell the roses every once in a while. I also feel like the cause of impatience is the fear people have of time and their own brains. When we are forced to wait on things we are forced to think and take the time to think about things that are going on in the world around us or in our own world. Now I don't know if it is just me or not but when i am waiting for something my brain starts to wander and it is scary sometimes. But, I feel like it is something necessary to the growth of humans. We all need that time to think about our lives and think through our decisions and problems as they approach us.
Zade (Hoggard High, Wilmington, NC.)
I am a patient person, but only in specific situations such as waiting for food or when a teacher asks us to do something else right after they told us to do another thing. I am also patient when the situation is something I had caused. The only times where I am impatient are when people don't listen to my advice then screw up, when people act dumber than they are to annoy me *Ahem* Dad *Ahem*, Or when software or a program malfunctions and I have to restart my computer. Recently, I started a using a car racing simulator in which I may have to race a car over a long and difficult track. Last night I crashed just before the end of a 7 mile long race and nearly broke my desk out of anger, I had no patience to re-do the whole race. But this is better than how I used to be, I used to be angry at every little thing, good or bad. The way I have coped with my impatience is simple. I closed my eyes and just focused on breathing. After 10 seconds, I would forget all that I was angry about. This still is not a complete solution for me, though. As I said earlier, I still get frustrated in specific situations and I am working on getting that fixed. I remind myself that the daily hassles that I go through are nowhere near what others have to go through in certain countries.

After reading the New York Times article, "Are You a Patient Person?" by The Learning Network, I think I am not a patient person. It's a bad habit I am trying to change, but when it comes to people doing or saying stupid things, I have no patience. People say, and do dumb things and they deserve patience and forgiveness, but sometimes, I don't have any. I am working on calming than jumpy, frustrated feeling that comes along with someone not knowing what to order in line at Starbucks, switching lanes without putting on a blinker, or generally doing idiotic things. In conclusion, I am working on becoming more patient but I have a long way to go.
Anney Lewis (Oxford Middle School)
After reading the article, Are You A Patient Person?, I think I am a pretty patient person. I can usually tolerate things pretty well. But sometimes I lose my patience, just like everyone in the world, especially when hunting with my dad. Mostly, I get very impatient when I don't understand in class. I am a perfectionist, so I always want to have perfect grades and I never like to be confused. It is hard to have patience because people can really be rude sometimes, but I try my best to ignore and deal with it nicely, the same when I don't understand in class. Overall, I think if you are having trouble being patient, just take a deep breath in and out.
Gray (Oxford)
After reading the article Are you a patient person. I say yes I am I mean in class not really but when you hunt you have to be patient I mean deer and ducks aren't just going to come to you because they want to be shot. You have to be at the write place in the right time. There are a lot of factors that go into hunting and, It has made men a patient person.
Emma P. (Hoggard)
The type of patience I struggle with the most would definitely be daily hassles. Some people think that being patient lets you appreciate things longer, which I can understand but personally I’m the type of person that just wants to go go go and do things and just never take a break and I think that’s a big reason why I struggle with patience. But also it can be a good thing because if you just have the need to want to do things more than you get to experience more.
Garrett (NWHS)
Yes, I am a patient person in my opinion. I know that all things come with time and there is no rush to acquire something. In life, not everything is gonna happen or come your way when you want it to, so you just have to wait. Being patient allows you to appreciate more things in life, and I find that by waiting for something longer, whatever that thing may be, makes you appreciate it even more.
