There is a reason the Browns are losers. Fine take your QB, but a CB at four? The draft fascinates me, the experts are rarely correct. Especially with QBs. I hope Barkley runs wild.
Vox (NYC)
So MANY self-styled "experts" and so little to say? How many of these guys EVER played a down, know a fig about football or sports, or even care?
Greg (MA)
The Browns could have had both Barkley and Mayfield by drafting Barkley as #1. Mayfield would have still been available at #4.
CTE is No Joke (Bay Area)
Best of luck navigating the world of CTE down the road, guys. Ask yourself if it’s really worth it... having your sanity and your mind is far more valuable than the money you see coming. My husband went 14th overall some years ago. Are we financially set? Sure. Is he well, happy and able to enjoy it? Nope. CTE is REAL. Very REAL. If you aren’t sure, ask yourself why foundations like After The Impact exist to help former NFL and NHL players, as well as WAR VETS find comprehensive medical care? Because symptomatically they represent similarly. That is nothing short of disturbing.

I know these men are killing themselves, it is disturbing. Humans are violent, immoral, and primitive in thought. But we do love our gladiators, we are just wired poorly.

There is really nothing to say about the NFL which once again showed how white and how corrupt they are. Josh Allen gets drafted and he is a downright racist, he was a hater in high school what is he now a new person? Haters don't change all you have to do is look at the latest Starbucks, Waffle House, etc Meanwhile Mr. Colin Kaepernick a Superbowl player is being blackballed because he stood up when the NFL plantation owners were telling us to shut up and play. When white people don't like something they let you know but you know justice will prevail for Mr. Kaepernick, big things are happening for him. I hope every player takes the knee and everyone who goes to the games support them. This NFL draft is just another racist sham.
MattNg (NY, NY)
The owners lead the way, you even had the owner of the Houston Texans compare the players to inmates! That's all you need to know. I hope every player kneels in every game. If white players were kneeling, it would not be an issue.

It sort of resembles slavers at auction.

The Giants made a mistake. They could have taken a decent running back in the 2nd or 3rd round. Manning has struggled the last several years and is 37yrs old. They should have taken a quarterback, Rosen? This is a quarterbacks league. Look at New England with Brady and running backs that nobody remembers. Manning's best years are far behind him. Stupid pick.
stevec (rochester, n.y.)
The Giants should draft offensive line help soon. Who's going to block for Bakrley?
Tortuga (Headwall, CO)
Can the Browns ever rise out of their ineptitude at drafting? Mayfield was not worthy of a #1 and that #4 is a total headscratcher.
Carl (Arlington, VA)
The Giants need blocking and pass rushing. If they can't stop the other team's QB, they're going to be behind and won't be able to use Barkley late in the game, and Eli or his successor will be crushed. Simple as that. I don't think it really matters if they have a running game if Eli is as inaccurate and as bad at reading defenses as he was last season. Hope I'm wrong.

How many of the eastern "experts" even saw Rashaad Penny play one game? Thought so. Drafts aren't graded until after the season except by people who don't have anything better to do. I'll remind you when you have to eat crow. Penny is a fine player and an even better person. He graduated in four years for one thing. Which is more than you can say for the rest of these picks. Penny, Allen and Vander Esch can play and play well. You'll see. Go Mountain West!!
VIVELAMORT (Calvi, Corsica)
Most of the decent players come out after three years. The subpar players come out after 4 years. Staying in college for 4 years proves NOTHING.
MattNg (NY, NY)
Tom Brady, drafted in the sixth round. Tom Brady, stayed all four years.
Don Max (Houston)
The Maysfield pick is a fascinating decision with the top pick but wouldn't be too quick to put it down because GM Dorsey is a seasoned NFL talent guy who's got many years of experience but still very intriguing pick. Speaking of NFL experts on talent what was Sean Payton thinking when he coughed up two first round picks for a defensive player from UT @ San Antonia ?
JW (denver)
Ok but what were their actions GPAs
Sparky (NYC)
The Giants did better than a B+ with Barkley. The simple truth is no one really knows which of the 4 QBs chosen in the top 10 spots will emerge as a star, if any. They all have troubling aspects to their game (and Mayfield and Rosen to their characters). Picking the "best player" in the draft who can contribute right now as opposed to rolling the dice on a QB shows sound judgement. I'd give the Giants an A-.
Robert C Smith (Jamul CA)
Rasheed Penny will prove the experts wrong. He played games on the West Coast at 730 at night and received recognition from few sports writers and TV Sports Network. Kick Returner, Running Back and expert receiver out of the backfield. He’s a one man highlight reel. The Seahawks made a great choice.
bill (washington state)
As a Seahawks fan I hope you're right. I'm worried he won't come close to his potential without a descent O line. Then he gets injured and/or dumped on the junk heap of running backs that have come thru Seattle since Marshawn left.
Douglas Weil (Chevy Chase, MD & Nyon, Switzerland)
Cowboys have multiple needs. Pretty sure Dallas could only address one with the 19th pick. Only 2 receivers have been drafted. I think that means that there are still receivers that can become Cowboys. Maybe SI can try again.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
As usual, those watching the New Jersey Giants and Jets in 2018 should not expect to see the home teams winning too many football game. Embrace the horror.
richard (crested butte)
Mr. Socrates, Consider this a formal invitation to cheer for the Broncos. Colorado is a swing state and it wouldn't hurt your credibility with the locals. As you say, "vote!" and may I add, "Go Donkeys!"
Chris W (Plantation, FL)
The problem with most "analysts" is they live in the Eastern Time zone and never see a player like Rashaad Penny because most of his Mountain West games were broadcast regionally and late in the evening ET. The knock on drafting a running back applies to West Coast-style teams with drop-back pass-first focus. Yet even teams like that (New Orleans) perform better with a star running back. But Seattle is an RPO Hybrid, where an RB like Penny adds a key dimension and relieves pressure from Russell Wilson, who can also run. Funny how Barkley to the Giants grades a B+, but Penny to Seattle is a D+? Oh yeah, Penny gained 1,000 more yards, averaged 1.9 yds per carry more and scored 2x the TDs last season as Barkley.
Sparky (NYC)
Against far inferior competition.
Lou Good (Page, AZ)
Penny also ran back seven kick-offs for TD's over his career, tying the NCAA record. Never missed a game. Rushed for over 1,000 yards as a back-up his junior year and led the nation with over 2,000 his senior. Running behind a line that started three freshman and a sophomore. Graduated in four years. Played in his bowl game. Getting the picture, east coast "experts"? Talk to me again in November after you've finished eating your healthy helping of crow. Have another plate while you're at it.
Lou Good (Page, AZ)
The Big 10? Surely you jest. Nice bowl games! Consistently the most overrated conference in America.
Austin (Seattle )
If you go back and consult the 2012 draft class selected by the Seahawks, you’ll see a who’s who list of losers no one wanted. Three years later, those losers boasted two consecutive super bowl trips. That the Seahawks are criticized for their current choice, is a harbinger of continuing success, if history is any guide. It’s much easier to accuse the Hawks management of sticking to what works, than it is to accuse the media of having an excellent memory.
KB (WA)
Huh, I guess you and I have not watched the same games. IMO, the draft picks of recent years haven't really worked here in Seattle and agree with Sherman and Bennett that the Pete Carroll rah-rah is stale and ineffective. The draft class of 2012 was exceptional, it has not been since .
marty (andover, MA)
With regard to the Giants' pick of Barkley and Bleacher Reports speculating about a 1,000 years season: this is the age of the QB and passing. Yet a 1,000 yard rushing season entails an average of 62.5 yards per game, an amount not considered all that great given 20-22 rushes per game....just an observation.
APO (JC NJ)
Efficiently running the ball - opens up the passing game - he is also a good blocker - and excellent receiver - the receiving and blocking make him worth the pick.
Chris (Philadelphia, PA)
I watched Barkley play in college. He does much more than just running, he's also a fantastic receiver and the type of player that opposing defenses are forced to continually adapt to. Incredible work ethic, humble guy, no injury history, and zero off-field issues; if anything, he should have gone higher.
Len (Manhattan)
Opposing DCs have not lost any sleep over the Giants running game of late, as a matter of fact they did not concern themselves with it at all; basically in their D alignments telling the Giants 'go ahead run the ball' which, even with the opposing D not paying any particular the attention the Giants, to be charitable, did not do particularly well. Barkley has a skill set that changes that, dramatically.
