I am so sick of hearing about his cell phone. If it was your phone would you give if to the NFL with the number of leaks that have proved to be inaccurate? Maybe some of you have an old cellphone that only makes phone calls, but beyond texts most people have pictures and other items that they would not want an organization as irresponsible as the NFL to have possession of. You can bet that if there were any risque, inappropriate or politically incorrect items on his phone they would have been mysteriously leaked to the press. Just like the lie that 11 of the 12 balls were underinflated by 2 pounds was leaked and never retracted. The haters want their ounce of flesh because they loathe the Patriots, and Goodell, being the spineless one he is, dutifully gave it to them. To give a suspension longer that the one he gave Ray Rice is ridiculous. I do not buy anything based on the endorsement of anyone. I buy things based on their quality and what I can afford. Anyone who makes purchases because a celebrity endorses it needs to get a life.

In all honesty, Brady fits right into a world that is built on illusion, substance over form, and fluff. After all, this is a guy who thought it more honorable to win through cheating than just playing fair and square.
A match made in heaven.

Also, none of the mainstream media seem to want to acknowledge the PR value of Deflategate.
1
I feel like he has had some cosmetic surgery since the Superbowl. Anyone else think he looks he looks surprisingly youthful and refreshed this summer?
3
Even though written by the NYT Styles Editor, this article seems very much misplaced in Thursday Styles. It would be far better placed in Monday Business, which seems to have a focus on media and advertising.
I'll state for the nth time that Deflategate is Roger Goodell's crowning PR masterpiece. How else could he get so much off-season publicity for his NFL for so little money spent? The media, whether televised, printed, or blogosphere, have unwittingly aided and abetted Goodell in his PR campaign. Why even the NYT Thursday Styles section has helped Goodell along! Even I have, simply by posting this comment.

A-Rod's redemption in NYC is proceeding pretty well, isn't it?

These people are good-looking but not very interesting or very likable. To hold their position as they age they need something, and controversy is better than nothing.
5
People who buy clothes, watches, sports apparel or other items because of celebrity endorsements are idiots. They are never going to look like or play like the celebrities/sports stars.
4
Yes, winning will always be on fashion, and that's why Brady's brand has nowhere to go but up. And it looks like he's winning all around, not only by being the best quarterback in history, but having a great wife and family, doing good, and being an example for a healthy, spiritual-grounded life.
Success always breeds envy and resentment. The accusations to Mr. Brady are far from conclusive. They are mud; they will dry and fall to the ground.

I'm not supposed to buy Uggs now because some air was let out of a football? What? Really?? I should be outraged by this? All the stories we've had recently about players beating their wives, girlfriends and children, and this is what qualifies as a scandal? I need a drink.

I had to laugh out loud in reading one poster here who said, "Brady will be fully exonerated..." HILARIOUS !!
"Shady Brady" was already found guilty, and lost on appeal. GUILTY. Done. That is the administrative law process, for now, that he and his rag-a-muffin bunch of cheating coaches and Patriot peers had to face.
We can only hope his stock in fashion might replace his lack of character.
What exoneration? Shady Brady DESTROYED his cell phone to delete and prevent his text-messages from ever being seen/found (SEE: Secy of State, "home server" and such, as parallel case). If anything, the FBI could and maybe should have been investigating the Patriots for "racketeering" and RICO conspiracy. Basically, Brady showed himself, when push came to shove, that he would ditch his two blue collar working-class underlings to face justice alone, he would lie, deny falsely, and destroy evidence.
All that aside, Shady Brady is a great guy, true patriot, and TRUE PATRIOT...

I assume you're kidding but, well...you never know.
1
I'm laughing at this guy. Brady won't be exonerated, only because he's been cemented as Goodell's whipping boy. If Lindsey Graham has to destroy his cell phone over privacy concerns for being a public figure, wouldn't you think Brady would need to do the same thing for being a rich guy with kidnappable kids. Besides, wouldn't any incriminating texts also appear on the recipients' phones? Except the NFL NEVER asked for those phones!
At the bottom of it, the NFL didn't care about air pressure when Aaron Rodgers or Eli Manning or other Super Bowl champs were doing it. They didn't care before the AFC game when the officials never bothered to record an actual psi. They only cared when there was the possibility that it would make Goodell look bad, and there is no end to the punishment for that.

Hurt that the Pats beat up your Ravens much?
4
Cheating trumps everything, not many people will identify with the label of Cheater.
3
No one, not even the NFL has suggested the Patriots clobbered the Colts because of the psi in one football..the definition of cheating is you had to have GAINED something by it.
4
Brady will be fully exonerated. The NFL front office makes FIFA look like a bastion of integrity.
6
No he won't.
5
The only folks on Brady's side live near Foxboro, MA. Soon, they'll see the light as well.

Regarding Michael Vick: I stopped buying any Nike products when he was re-signed. I'll never touch another Nike product again.

The worm turned this week after the appeal transcripts were released. Brady is coming back in the fourth quarter, again. No one knows how this turns out.
4
Characterizing this as a "scandal" is inaccurate, as is comparing to the mostly criminal acts mentioned. Brady is the subject of a smear campaign by the NFL commissioner and underlings—not unlike Chris Christie behavior, for all you New Yorkers—and a compliant media. But that's changing as the story unfolds.
10
Vanessa Friedman doesn't know the difference between a forward pass or a fashion faux pas. Making comparisons of Brady's supposedly actions to the athletes mentioned in the article proves my point. Mr. Brady went through a yellow light and was charged with grand theft auto!
8
winning will always be in fashion...
2
I may be off-concept here, but the man in question was recently suspended by his league for dishonesty. Funny time to have an article about hm. On anything.
3
Who cares? When he wears his preppy glasses Brady is the hottest man alive.
1
He should appear more with Gisele Bundchen, especially when she looks as good as she does in that 2014 Met Gala picture in your article. I don't usually get wowed by fashion models, but, OMG. She has to be the most beautiful woman in the world currently.
4
Since Tom Brady is just a football player, he has no standing whatsoever. He doesn't make anything, doesn't invent things, doesn't contribute to our intellectual or social well-being. He's a zero. That he's also a cheat is of no importance.
5
It's Lance Armstrong all over again.
Why do some really great talents cheat, then lie about it? What a great shame!
It's worthy of an Orson Welles film.

Here's the great thing about growing old as an ordinary person versus growing old as a "superior" being, such as Tom and Gisele Brady; the fall from their zenith hurts so much more. And it isn't a quick fall. It is excruciatingly slow, like a death by a thousand cuts. The phone stops ringing. The crowd stops applauding. Oh sure, a few of our modern-day upper crust manage to age gracefully, but not many.
The "deflate-gate" scandal surrounding Tom Brady shows that that aging scares the bejesus out of him. So he looks for every advantage to stay in the league. Maybe it's because in the age of social media, 15 minutes of fame has turned to 15 seconds. If that.

Poor guy, nothing but bland vanilla public statements ever leave his mouth. He's got the supermodel wife, but he gets the deer-in-the-headlights look when he's asked a controversial question ("Did you cheat?"), answers it like a lawyer coached him ("I don't believe I cheated"), and is really missing half the fun that comes along with being the best current QB.
He's trying to be Ward Cleaver in the NFL. That doesn't fit. He could have been Michael Jordan; instead he's closer to A-Rod.

One wonders, in the midst of all the media-bashing of Tom Brady (which I applaud), whether his ego has perhaps deflated a bit...
2
Something tells me we really don't have to be worrying about Tom Brady's anything. This guy is undoubtedly one of the most marketable (and envied) man in America. Between he and his wife they're worth a fortune. Surely they could retire VERY comfortably tomorrow. Tom's deflated balls are most definitely not going to deflect on his popularity. Certainly not in New England where they are our regional reigning Prince and Princess. Tom and Gisele are like the living 21st century version of Jackie and JFK here in Massachusetts.
8
"Tom's deflated balls are most definitely not going to deflect on his popularity." Really?
I'd advise -- before you put your signature to this presumption -- that you check out future sales of his jersey.
P.S.: Like your phrase, "Tom's deflated balls." In it, I've so far counted at least 4 fitting metaphors....

Wrong, just plain wrong. My husband is teaching his PhD. mathematics and biomedical students how to be more marketable by involving them in research of breast cancer, introducing them to lobbyists of scientific congressional committees, and interning them with pharmaceutical companies, and just trying to make our world a better place for goodness sake. THESE are the people who we need to value and envy, and their pay should reflect what they offer us as a society. If the Tom Bradys of the world are all that our children aspire to be because of this skewed compensation system, then we are in serious trouble already.
And the fact that the Times has an article assessing Mr. Brady's stock in anything, well, I will just say that we all share in the blame for the popularity [and wealth] of the Paris Hiltons, Grumpy Cats, and Tom Bradys of the world.

I think that if Brady's appeal to Federal Court is heard and decided, the decision will be that the NFL had a sufficient basis for its finding against him, particularly because of his destruction of the cellphone. So I do not see that the judicial process will rehabilitate him.
That leaves the settlement negotiations. Judge Berman's order puts some pressure on the NFL to offer some accomnodation to Brady which otherwise he would likely not get. Judge Berman is in practical terms intervening in Brady's favour, and doing so seems to me entirely inappropriate.
The NFL should stick to its guns and give Brady nothing. But I fear that it will use negotiations as an excuse to offer Brady concessions to please the fans and the owners.

It is premature to talk about this. The absurd football deflation episode is far from over, although the league dearly wishes that it was. By the time the full story is told, the brand of the NFL will end up suffering far more than Brady. The Patriots are going to keep bringing the appalling details to light, and the more they do, the more the league officers will wish they had never decided to go after Kraft's franchise in the inept, logically and intellectually bankrupt, and inexplicably vengeful manner they have.
I would not predict that Brady will necessarily become vindicated in the public view. But the NFL's image is going to hurtle past whatever stain any of its tarnished gladiators are cloaked in on its way to the utter cauldron of shame and infamy. It can't happen soon enough. As an organization, the NFL was already a wretched enterprise before its leadership decided to take on the deflation issue.

The Brady fashion low came when he started modeling for Ugg boots.
My advise for Brady: embrace the villain role, grow hair long and a fat beard, look to be traded to the Raiders, start driving a 70s era Trans Am T-top with Giselle in the passenger seat, get sponsored by Ultra-Brite tooth paste and PBR, and this will all go away.

You lost me when you referred to the Wells Report as "independent."

As arguably two of the biggest phonies in contemporary culture, I'm sure both Brady and Bundchen will retain their elevated status in the fashion world. Rock that burqa!
I mean, if people actually believe there is such a thing as a 40 million dollar mansion that qualifies as "eco-friendly", they'll believe anything. Tom and Giselle are counting on it.

Seems like the real headline here is how irrelevant the Celebrity DBI is. Tom Brady's approval level is similar to Macaulay Caulkin's? Good job, good effort.

"Amid the accusations of deflated footballs, Mr. Brady’s image, which bridges the worlds of sports and style, has been tarnished. But how much will it really matter?"
For the few who care about the answer, why not wait and see, instead of wasting everyone's time with prognostication?

Sorry, New York Times. The Patriots will still crush the New York teams. Deal with it.
19
Sorry to intrude on your small minded hatred of all things New York but the Giants beat the Pats in two super bowls.

It's easy when you have an unfair advantage and have to do it by cheating. The season hasn't even started yet.
1
looking at this picture and the many others I have seen of him, if I didn't know who he was, I would think he is just a slightly-above-average-looking guy. There is nothing about him or the woman beside him that appeals to me from a marketing or personal perspective.

A "suburban stiff" who has agreed to take less money than his market value so that his team can surround him with better players for the Patriots' annual playoff push.
As for Joe Namath 1969... What has he — or the Jets — done lately? 1969 is the last time the Jets won anything, while Brady has hoisted the Lombardi trophy four times since 2001.

The average person or non-football fan does not care or see the point of whether a bunch of footballs were over-inflated or deflated. Brady is tall, handsome, looks good in couture and is married to the manly Gisele. He will retain whatever appeal he has within the fashion world. I'm sure he is not awake at night worrying about this.
32
Most fair minded people do care about cheating. And, Gisele, manly?

I assume that was auto-corrected from "comely".
