Great - now instead of being shielded by DeBlasio’s incompetence from the dilution of 4 other boroughs - I have to now have a concentrated DeBlasio ineptness to my borough I’m sure she’ll continue the tradition of taking the working people who pay most of the city taxes for granted in favor of those receiving this largesse and reducing our services so that it continues to be a stupid decision to stay in this city Hey - plant a tree, help the homeless, fix the subway At least pretend our tax dollars are valued and we’d want some services for it - that could be a first step for you drips
Yeah, whatever.... (New York, NY)
How can we get rid of deBlasio before his term ceases? Such a mechanism must exist, no? His arrogance, incompetency, and utter disinterest in addressing important City of NY issues, is appalling. Enough already!!

Spare me !!! Our progressive mayor has spent years being the tool of the real estate industry. All the while slobbering about affordable living as if no one would notice he accomplished absolutely nothing except provide billionaire developers with annual billion dollar tax exemptions legislated for affordable living construction. Do you think our Mayor has noticed or is concerned that New York City is losing more than 270 residents each day, more than any other city in the United States, according to census data. Why? High taxes, staggering costs of living, & significant decline in the quality of life. Not to mention the shameful degradation of the rule of law as the courts do the bidding of the destructive real estate industry. https://thehill.com/opinion/finance/459592-why-does-new-york-city-lose-more-residents-than-the-rest-of-america When he was a Regional Director at HUD under Cuomo $23 million was lost to scams. Some sources place the loss at $70 million. https://nypost.com/2013/10/27/hud-region-lost-23m-to-scams-while-de-blasio-was-in-charge/ Charlene McCray learned political accounting at the knee of her progressive con artist husband with her $billion dollar THRIVE hoax. McCray's is utterly unqualified. Her unethical conduct is equal to that of her husband's. The entire scenario described in the article is little more than a freakish spectacle.

This is a joke!

Not now. Not ever. (And no "hater's gonna hate" nonsense, okay? I voted for Billy De. Well, the first time, anyway; sat out 2017...) But I hear Dante's growin' out his 'fro again...
John D (Queens, NY)
Most of the writers here, myself included, are unhappy about the deblasios. And my question is: Why do people still vote for him...? Just vote for the d no matter what...?! As the old saying goes, we deserve it....

Power gets in to your blood and you can never let go of it. Till people kick you out.

New Yorkers got complacent after three terms with Bloomberg, which followed a successful crime reduction effort by his predecessor, Giuliani. So complacent, in fact, only about 25% actually voted in de Blasio's two races. New York City residents do vote when they're unhappy, however; turnout was 57% when Giuliani defeated Dinkins as people were very concerned about crime. De Blasio's lousy performance and rising crime rates will likely get New Yorkers voting again.
Luisa Cerutti (New York)
can he just do his job? vs campaigning for himself or others?
C In NY (NYC)
Is there a way to sue Bill de Blasio for fraudolent misappropriation? He's being paid to be the mayor of NYC, which in and on itself is a job that requires a 30-hour day. Instead, he seems to be spending his time on everything but what he's being paid for. That's almost fraud. In the meanwhile, pedestrians and cyclists are dying, kids are being run over, crime is rising, subway cars are being tagged and vandalized, the homeless population is getting out of control. How in the world does he have time to push his wife's political agenda? As an aside, where's a full account of the almost $1 billion already spent by Chirlane McCray?
ellienyc (New York city)
@C In NY And he doesn't want to do away with free East River crossings or put a tram down 42d St or otherwise limit activities of cars coming into Manhattan from outer boroughs because a lot of the people who do those things and want to continue doing them live in Brooklyn.

As I a registered democrat living in Brooklyn I can see with complete certainty that I will NEVER vote for her. I would rather vote for the stray cat living under the car parked outside.
Margo Channing (NY)
Show us the (missing) money. Ms McCray is infinity not qualified.
Kayemtee (Saratoga, New York)
These two have lived on the government teat for their entire adult lives in jobs, other than the mayoralty, that were close to worthless (Public Advocate? Really?). Now that Dollar Bill is term limited, he is looking for a way to keep the gravy train rolling. I’ve come to believe that we get the elective officials we deserve, and we are all the poorer for it.
Steven (NYC)
Great Ms McCray can now bring the level of nepotism and incompetence she’s shown as First Lady to a another rigged appointment. Time for these people to find another line of work.
kkm (NYC)
Bill de Blasio - attempting to run for President of the United States when he can't get anything done in NYC because he is in the gym more than behind his desk at City Hall - and then we have his wife, Chirlane McCray - who has not accounted for the $1 billion for her project, "Thrive NYC." Is anyone investigating - say, the Attorney General for the State for New York - the accounting for "Thrive NYC?" Why is she not called out to account for this funding? The two of them are the epitome of "chutzpah" but New Yorkers know grifters when they see them and are not fooled by Bill and Chirlane's false sense of entitlement -if not enrichment.
pokemon (NYC)
The shameless money-grab, nepotism and non-accountability of the deBlasios continue. All on the backs of NYC taxpayers - sad and shameful.
Mike Cos (NYC)
Worst Mayor ever. We have homeless intimidating drivers again by the west side highway, and he’s spending $3 billion on the homeless. His wife ran a mental health program with zero effect but spent a billion. Please De Blasios.....it’s time for a vacation.
AACNY (New York)
They must think they are the Clintons.
Edwin (NY)
With Chirlane ensconced in some power perch in Brooklyn and Eric Adams leveraged into the mayoralty, anyone not a manhattan software engineer or a section 8 housing or NYCHA resident is in big trouble. Time to go back to Iowa, regardless if you're actually from Iowa.
Kai (Oatey)
What has McGray done besides nepotism, money wasting and strut?
ellienyc (New York city)
@Kai Am told she is a "poet" though have never seen any poems from her.
Ari Weitzner (Nyc)
i see the progressives could care less that a mayor is using his political influence, while in office, to promote his wife. i dont know what progressive even means at this point. i think it means to get away with as much malfeasance as possible while going to the gym every day in another borough, using SUV's, while whining about the climate. Bloomberg went to work every day by subway. what a tool. cant stand him. so many block stinks from urine and the homeless are everywhere, and people get arrested and re-arrested over and over. the last thing this city needs is a liberal in the mayor's office.
doy1 (nyc)
@Ari Weitzner, Bloomberg did NOT take the subway every day - only did it occasionally for photo ops. Most of the time, he took an SUV to work - in fact, he'd have an entourage of SUVs idling outside his townhouse on the upper east side every morning. As for the homeless, Bloomberg was having them bused out of Manhattan below 96th Street out to the Rockaways or the Bronx where they'd be out of sight.
Dave (New Jersey)
Just go away. Preferably, far, far away.
Dan (New York)
Please, please make them both go away...
Paul (NYC)
The patronage swamp that Bloomberg made great progress in draining has been thoroughly re-filled by Di Blasio. The man seems to genuinely enjoy wheeling and dealing (certainly more than doing his actual job). Whether it's doubling the number of parking placards, giving MTA appointees city-funded chauffeurs, granting donors all sorts of preferential access, or promoting his wife's ambitions, it's like he's allergic to even the appearance of fair dealing. These two need to just go away.
max's mum (Manhattan)
Enough of these two - I just want them to quietly retire after his term ends.
NCJ (New York)
These two need to provide a full invoice of how the funds for ThriveNYC were spent, and need to be prosecuted if the funds were misappropriated (which seems likely).
Jerry (New York City)
@NCJ We need a Brooklyn borough president why?
DH (NYC)
Is it really too much to expect the Mayor of New York City to prioritize the job that he was elected to do?
Edwin (NY)
@DH Best reason to stop Bernie: That he might have to give this guy a cabinet job.
Michael (New York)
She squandered almost $1 billion and can’t account for it. She should be barred from all public offices
Louis (RegoPark)
As you can see from the previous comments, Ms. McCray has wasted funds, been ineffective in her mental health initiatives and has no positive qualifications. Both her and the Mayor hopefully will be out of office after 2021. We need more successful liberals and less failed progressives in office.
SR (New York)
@Louis In other words, she has the perfect qualifications for political office!
Sara (United States)
Sooo, does Mayor Di Blasio ever just, you know, do his job? As Mayor? Seems like his focus is always elsewhere and his priorities are more personal than civic.
George Matteson (New York, N.Y.)
A pair of low budget grifters.
Ben Pinczewski (New York)
@George Matteson Low budget? You call wasting a billion dollars on a mental health program that benefited no one and hasn't been accounted for low budget?
historyprof (brooklyn)
At least she's not running for President -- like another NYC resident who also had no political experience. I look forward to the day when women don't have to lean on a husband to clear the path for them to have a political career.
Claudia (Connecticut)
Please, voters. Don’t be fooled again.
HH (Rochester, NY)
This is nothing but nepotism. What has Ms. McCray done in substance for Brooklyn - besides being the wife of the mayor?
Janet Halvorson (Palm Beach)
What has she done? She’s lost hundreds of millions of dollars on government programs she’s managed. She is someone I WISH would go to the gym more often. It would keep her from losing more. What a nightmare these two are.
Edwin (NY)
@HH Doesn't matter. Bill HAS to get her this job. Otherwise it is likely that Chirlane will go back to Essence and publish a sequel to her 1979 essay entitled "I Am a Lesbian. Again"
paul (White Plains, NY)
This woman wasted $1 billion in taxpayer money on her failed social programs. Where did that money go? Now she is running a monthly podcast and "earning" big bucks for talking with her son about his bi-racial experience. It takes real nerve to think that you can be Brooklyn borough president on that resume, but then again, de Blasio became mayor with a resume that was only slightly better. Apparently his wife has learned from the master that the people can be fooled over and over again.
Nycdweller (Nyc)
Where is the $850 million she misplaced for THRIVE. Where is the money???
kkm (NYC)
Did Mayor Bill deBlasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, ever account for the 1 billion in monies for her "ThriveNYC” mental health initiative? If not, she is going no where and the Attorney General for the State of New York may want to consider looking into where the money for ThriveNYC has been spent.
HH (Rochester, NY)
@kkm Please NY Time: Investigate what kkm is saying. Find out what happened to the $1 billion that went to ThriveNYC.
kkm (NYC)
@HH : Thanks, I appreciate your support! The New York Times as well as the Attorney General for the State of New York need to do a very thorough investigation into ThriveNYC - $1 billion is not chump change!
MomT (Massachusetts)
Well, well, well so not surprised!
Motherless Brooklyn (Brooklyn)
This does rather take one’s breath away for its audacity.
SMB (New York, NY)
No donors at Gracie Mansion and no support for McCray!
Francesca Turchiano (New York)
Ms. McCray has no qualifications for a government leadership position. She is known to have squandered vast sums put under her control by Bill and to have hired inept friends and relatives, many of whom left in disgraced status. It’s nice that they’re still in love. It’s not nice that they’re often blind to public service and public needs.
S (NYC)
Brooklyn needs a Borough President who doesn't think they are above the people and doesn't use race as an issue. I attended Charlene's mentoring event at Gracie Mansion, and I was appalled that she never mingled with the people she invited to her home. She went in and out a side door. It was disgusting. She also had no access for people with disabilities, including hearing loss. Then there was the fact that I was one of I believe four white women at the event. Why is mentoring based on race? Brooklyn is a diverse community, and we need a Borough President who brings our communities together and is of the people for the people versus someone who thinks she is above the fray.
SR (New York)
It's great to know that the George and Lurleen Wallace of our age can be found right in our backyard. She has certainly earned the Borough President post. Who else could take a one billion dollar vanity project and put up posters in the subway telling people to talk to each other? The sheer audacity of this move by our ethically challenged mayor deserves some recognition, I guess. But then again, the DeBlasio family could certainly use the $179k yearly salary of this ceremonial post to contribute to the fund to pay off his $2.6 million legal bills that he is foisting on taxpayers!
Edwin (NY)
@SR Your point is well taken but even George and Lurleen Wallace deserve better than to be drawn into a comparison like this.
