Carnaval in Rio is on my bucket list!

I wish we had something so joyful and colorful and full of music and life here. Instead we've got MAGA rallies and hate speech and online petitions and constant anxiety. America needs to have more fun.

This is a beautiful article, but does suffer without the sound of the drums!! These videos are lost without the sounds. People who claim that Carnaval's not political have no idea what they're talking about. There's a long history in Brazil of marginalised people advocating for their values and worth through Carnaval, including but not limited to the surge in Afro blocos and street performances in the 1970s and 80s. Google it.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if, as soon as Lent is over, the samba schools in Rio and Sao Paulo and in all the cities of Brazil that observe Carnaval practiced for 2021 on one - the same -weekend every month as a protest against the Bolsonaro regime? I'd like to see him try to arrest everyone.

Bolsonaro is supported by a large majority in Brazil. There is plenty of freedom here.

I love all these beautiful women, and I’ve heard the Brazilian men Andre beautiful, too...would love to see them!

I couldn't help but notice the utter lack of indigenous peoples in both your words and pictures. Perhaps, next time, you could be more inclusive. After all, they are the First Peoples. Show respect.

What! No Music for the Batuicada to view the dances??

Sorry, March is not the peak of summer in Brazil,

What an article! World's biggest festival of joy is equaled with resistance! This can be called far-fetched. Would you, please, leave politics out of the events that have nothing to do with it? Brasil is proud to have such a festival that celebrates living. It started in the 18th century. Happy people prepare for it sometimes the whole year and go to the streets to dance. There's really no need to meddle modern world traumas with the quintessence of joy.

Stunning photos. Kudos to the photographer Maria Magdalena Arrellaga.

President Bolsonaro is admired by a large majority of Brazilians. Carnival in Rio brings lots of problems due to rampant violence. People seem to have no limit to the so called enjoyment of the party. There is freedom in abundance in Brazil. Freedom without responsibility!

Beautiful photographs and incredible choice of focusing on women in carnival, showing there is more to Brazil than chauvinistic culture. Women resist and do so beautifully and with personality. What we Brazilian people are can not be changed by act of will. They'll have to bulldoze our bodies, skin color, rhythm, African heritage, and sexuality to create the world that they imagine. Reality and their world are not compatible.

Joy is an act of resistance. What a beautiful scene!

Serious times in Brasil. Brave people taking to the streets to honor art and freedom. Tudo de bom!
