Hannah (New York)
People cross a makeshift road made of small boats because the path is blocked by plants that have grown very tall. The child crossing in the front of the photo is not much taller than the plants that have grown on the side, especially considering that he is already standing on a boat. The boats are clearly arranged in a uniform matter to serve a new purpose as a road. Maybe there was water below and that’s why the boats were already there. The plants outgrew the water, therefore making it hard to be mobile on boat. The people in the image look nonchalant as if this is not a strange experience. The child looks carefree and acts as if he is used to seeing this. The makeshift road has probably been there for quite some time and everyone has become used to it.
Isaiah (home)
they are traveling in china
AnimeSux (Chicago,Illinois)
I see people walking down a hill on boats. Also I see people walking in the opposite direction.
E (Chicago, illinois)
There are boats and it looks like they are going down a hill. There are also plants around the boats and people.
Angel C (CA)
what I see in this image is a group of people crossing the river/lake with plants by using the boats as a bridge to cross. this makes me say that because as you can they're not rowing the boats, they are walking over them.
Jessica (Toronto, Canada)
It seems as if the people are trying not to kill the plants by walking on the boats. I think of this because everyone looks cautious about where to step next except for the man in the green plants, whom some are looking at. What's a bit strange is that everybody in this image looks like they are all the same race so this place might be unknown to many foreigners. I wonder if there is a river underneath the boats and if the people walking over them would water the plants and treat as a garden as we would? This photo seems fascinating because of its unusual choice of boats as their "sidewalk" and the abundance of vegetation surrounding them.
張葶 (Taiwan)
In this picture there are many people on the boats. I think this picture was taken at Asian country, like Thailand or India. There are many green plants lives in water beside boats. I think people there may have a hard time living in a remote area, but they doesn't feel unhappy to their life. I think people their live with love and peace which has a high-quality of life.
Cassie (Canada)
It’s a river trail of boats with family’s of people travelling on it. And judging on how they’re dressed is say it’s in another country. This makes me wonder where they’re going why they built and travel sysytem like that
Tatiana Contreras (6Adms)
I see people on canos or like they use those to travel for things or supplies .
S.S (CA)
I think that in this picture people are traveling and walking on the boats to get where they need to be. It seems like they are walking overs crops and their is even some people leaning over it. The location seems to be maybe somewhere in South Asia.
Mauricio Baca (Mexico)
What I may assume is that people are trying to cross like a river type because they have like those canoe and if it weren't for this things they couldn't have the opportunity to cross it. It is located maybe like and India, and well people don't seem to be happy they kinda struggle.
yosai (A01285061)
In this picture I can see many boats forming a bridge with some people walking on the boats. this persons apparently are from india or one place in Eastern Asia because they are dressed with traditional clothes .
Hector Guadalupe De La Garza Treviño (General Teran, N.L)
I think that in this picture there are people from India traveling in like a bridge but is doing with boats. This person I think that they go to his houses or go to the market to bring food for their children. This is an awesome structure of a bridge is too cool to have a bridge doing with boats, I think that this was like a lake that get dry and grow a lot of grass.
Marisol (México)
I think that what its shown in the picture is people maybe from India (or somewhere near there) its crossing like a "bridge" made of boats, and there is also a lot of plants around them and some bamboo.
Esther (Mexico)
In this picture I can see people walking on top of boats and they are walking by their crops. Some men are on their knees and it looks like they are teaching the small children how to harvest
Esther (Mexico)
In this picture I can see people walking on boats and they are walking by their crops. Some men are on their knees and it looks like they teaching the small children how to harvest.
Gabriela Jimenez A01284550 (Mexico)
In this picture all I can see is people walking through a kind of a bridge that is in the middle of a lot of plants. The green part and the woods make me think that of the picture. I cannot see that much to be honest but I don't know maybe this people are like tourist or something, that they are just knowing this place.
Daniel Gonzalez (Mexico)
I see a group of people walking by a path of boats, in India, they are in a harvest. What makes me say that is that the women are dressed with the clothes that covers onto his face, and what makes me say that they are in a harvest is all the plants that are around. What also you can see that they are all talking with their groups and they are at the edge of the boat to grab the plants
Alejandro Mendoza (Monterrey)
I think that this place is a place in India or somewhere around it because of the enviroment, the nature and the way that the people wears.
Hyeonji Cho A01284574 (Mexico)
People are crossing the road, but the road leads to wooden boats, and they are crossing the road over them. And the bridge made of the wooden boats is located among the green plants. If you see the bridges connected by ships, it seems to be floating on the water. The people passing by the bridges seem to be from the Middle East because the women are wearing the hijab.
David Rdz (Mexico)
So I think that all those people who are in the boats are in the boats are walking as if it were bridge for some to go somewhere
David Montero (Español)
On the picture what I see is the working class. People working through the boats for a purpose. Maybe they are at the rural zone and what they are doing some kind of job to gain a honest life. In a my opinion, a wonderful picture.
Mauricio Flores (México)
I see a group of people walking over some grass using boats as floor. As if trying to avoid stepping on the grass/plants. I say this because people only appear to be stepping on the boats so I came to the conclusion that that was what they were attempting to do. I can also see sticks alongside the boats, as to guide the people or to give something to hold on to so they don't fall
Andrea Sierra (México)
In this picture, we can see how people travels trough the water using boats. It also shows a way of collective work since for this to work there must be people willing to participate.
Xavier (Monterrey)
On the picture we can se how they made a bridge out of boats, i can deduct from how they are walking from boat to boat, something that impacts me is how it looks normal for them to pass by the improvised bridge
Hannah (New York)
@Xavier I also believe that this is an improvised bridge to be used temporarily. They do act as if this is nothing out of the ordinary.
marijose salazar A01285565 (monterrey)
in the picture i see a group of persons walking on a track of boats, maybe because it can be a river over there, i also see a lot of plants.
Dolores Reyes (México)
In the image I can see people walking on boats. I think that these people are in a harvest garden, and what they are going to do is that they are going to see how their crops are going and take their children to learn how to harvest.
Alexei Carrillo (México)
In the image we can see people from India trying to cross a river using boats because all around there are vegetables or crops and they have to be in the water. And we can also see how some people try to grab some of the crops or are just looking at them
Alexa Montes (Mexico)
In this picture I see a group of people which is walking on boats to get to the other side, there is one kid, behind him are two women one of the women appears to be his mother, behind they are twelve men these seem to be collecting some vegetables, since there is one that is crouched on the edge of the boat.
Genaro A01285717 (México)
In this image I can see a group of people walking a long way of boats around a lot of plants and is just 1 little boy on the picture, also I can see bambú
Jorge Escobar (México)
I can see a a many boats connected to each others making a floating bridge for many people in a river whit many plants.
Mauricio Medina (México)
In the image I see a group of persons from Malaysia and India that are on top of some boats making a bridge in the middle of two big group of plants. The people are talking each other and there is a kid on the front of the photo and a old man in the back of the image.
Mauricio Camacho (Mexico)
On this picture I see people walking on a track of boats, maybe because theres a river over there, and they need to pass to get to their jobs. I think that they are on a jungle or they are passing through the crops.
Sebastián De Alejandro (México)
I see a lot of people going somewhere with boats, because probably for a job in other place, they used the boats to transports other things too, probably that people are poor.
Stephani Salazar (Mexico)
I see some people walking on a bridge made by boats, there are women, men and children. I think that they are in India or some country in Asia or Africa, because the women dress different and it is the way they dress in those places. I think they are getting food througth that river and it is full of plants and vegetables.
Ricardo Morales (Mexico)
I see a lot of people maybe from India,Malaysia or something like that. They are walking through a kind of river using canoes to walk on it. Maybe they are planting fruits or vegetables ,because I think this is a kind of sown field.
Fer (mty)
In this picture, I see a lot of humble people on boats and by the way that they are dressed, also, it seems like they are walking to somewhere by crossing a bridge made by boats in the middle of plants.
Miguel (MEXICO)
In the image you can see different people of Indian origin walking on a boat path which is stranded in the middle of a river which is completely full of lilies and aquatic plants.
Joel Aragon (Mexico)
I see it as a type of Indian culture, in which they have to cross a kind of garden by means of boats, either because the garden is in a river, and perhaps through which they pass the river as a form of bridge, they also collect something from the plants of that river can give because in some parts there are people who are going down to see something perhaps to collect fruits.
Mariana González (México)
What I see in the image is a group of people who probably live on the other side of this field and when they saw that they could not pass they put boats to cross,I think they are in India because of the clothes they are wearing.
Alejandra De la Fuente (Mexico)
In te picture I can see different people in a very large garden. I think this place is located in India because of the way the women are dressed. Families collect food such as vegetables or seeds. I can see that it is a humid place, so I think there is a river near there. The garden colors are very bright and beautiful. It is a very nice place.
Caty (Mexico)
In this picture I can see a beautiful bridge made of boats, I can see that this bridge is in a very unusual place since it is around of a lot of nature. Above the bridge I see a lot of people walking by. The people seem to be focused on their way.
Valdo (México)
I think all that people are trying to cross a river with a bridge made of boats. They are using the boats in that form because the water of the river is full of leaves, and that make that they can´t navigate the boats. Maybe there is a town and in the other side a kind of city
Ari Dorantes (a)
In the image I can see people walking on boats, I suppose they are in a river and it seems that they are collecting fruits or vegetables from the plants that are around. I can also see that the women who are up ahead are taking care of the child who is there.
Ximena (Mexico)
In the picture I can see people walking in boats , the picture you can see kids, women and man, they use boats to pass because I think they are in a river or a lake cover with the plants or anothing idea that came to my mind it´s that maybe they are trying to recollect something and the boats are helping them to get a little bit further
Rodolfo Rdz. (Monterrey)
In the image you can see people walking on wood, you can see a lot of vegetation around and you can see people walking by without concern.
Patricio Cantu (Mexico)
I see poor people walking in boats, there are kids, women and men, there are trees , I think they aren in south africa or a conuntry with that conditions like India
Abraham Urdiales Lozano (Mexico)
Abraham Urdiales Lozano A01285755 / Mexico The first time I see this picture I think that the persons are using the bouts like a bridge but then I think that their are collecting foot of the ground in other word I thing their are doing agriculture.
Andrés (México)
In the image I can see people walking over a long way of boats, they build a bridge with the boats. All the people are adults and children, they look like indian people because they have them clothes, but I see another adults on elegant clothes. I see they look like they are in a Jungle. I said that because they look like poor people and they are walking to another place.
Victor Lopez (.)
In the image I can see people walking on boats, so I think there is a small river that we can't see, I think they are working or doing some work or they are just crossing a boat road, we can see children, men and women from what I see in the picture they are poor people
Juan Antonio Robles Mtz (Mty,Mexico)
It makes me feel dizzy at first eye because there is a lot of people and too many canoes, maybe this kind of bridge had been done when a flood came to the town of this people,it was really necessary for this community to pass through the lake.Either their jobs are located there or something else that is important too.
Ovidio (monterrey)
I see many poor people walking on a way created by boats, these people are walking over a river on a jungle, they are walking to go to a school or our job.
Oscar Escudero (México)
Well, I see adults and only one children walking on boats, maybe the zone is a lake or just a jungle.
Diego Saenz (Mexico)
I see much humble people walking in the boats.
Alejandro Leal (México)
I see some people of an occidental place and I see people walking on boats trrougt a type of plantations I think this thing because I see sticks and there are walking in boats
Mario (Mexico)
I see some people that are farming and they are on canoes. They are poor people, they are in a type of jungle. I think they are trying to go somewhere. I think the people are from India and they are using the canoes like a kind of bridge.
Hania (Mexico)
I think that in the picture the people are using the boats to crossing some border
Roberto SeRRATO (Mexico)
I see boats and people walking on them and I see trees and sticks I see kids and most women wearing scarves around their neck and men with no shirt. I think that they are poor and they are trying to get somewhere
yeshUa (monterrey, mexico)
i see a bunch of people (adults and children) walking on the boats in some country like india and they are traveling to an another place.
Daniel Zárate (México)
I see people walking with low economic conditions in canoes, I think they are looking for some kind of fruit or vegetable to eat
Erika Roque (México, Nuevo León)
I see in the picture some people from India working in canoas and taking care their children's . I can see this because they are collecting something next to the plants. I can see a bridge with the canoas, because, maybe they need to walk.
Mauricio (Mexico)
I can see some hard workers in the jungle, they are working in the farming as you can see some guys are getting plants, etc. They are walking in a type of boat, they are going to somewhere. This people are poor and I guess they are in India or in some country in Africa.
Eduardo (Monterrey,Mexico)
I see people walking in the boats, also I see trees, I see one kid and in the picture there are only two women, the men that have the t shirt with blue lines are looking to a place, maybe they are going to work or they are working.
Gianna Chapa (Monterrey, Mexico)
I that picture, I see adults and children walking on boats. They look like poor people. I think that the location of this picture is either in a place in South Africa or in India.
Jeimmy (nuevo león Mexico)
I see on the picture a natural place with people or families of low resouces standing in boats or walking in them. Maybe they are taking a good time familiar, fishing or only watching the views.
Fernando (Mexico)
I see a group of farmers harvesting the crops with the boats. It can also be people are going rivers with boats
José David (Mexico)
In the picture, I see some men, women and a child, who are maybe are Indians. Indians people are walking on the road made of boats in the woods on a lake. The reason I think they are Indian is because of their skin color and the way they are dressed.
Fernanda (MÉXICO)
I see families walking between many plants by boats, in the image I can see that the persons are watching the plants, I don't know is that the kind of work that they have, or they are only crossing to another place.
Gabriel (Dubai)
In this picture I see people walking on canoes through a jungle. In the canoes there are small packages that people are standing on, the people who cross in the canoes also look Indian, so their location could be in India or something.People are looking around, plants are trees, and they seem to be going in different directions. It is observed that people are poor, because of how they are dressed.
Max López (México)
I see people who are working with agriculture, and I see that they want to go aside but they are in a problem.
Michel (salem)
What I see are adults and children walking on a path of boats through a type of jungle. I also see sticks poking out from the leaves. What makes me say that is their people on boats in the middle of a jungle. I think they are trying to go somewhere. Another thing I see is there are some people in business suits.
Bella Gustofson (Dunkirk NY)
I see familys and they seem to be on some type of boat or something . They are surrounded in green plants. They look like they are going somewhere.
Adrianna (6A DMS)
I see adults and children walking on boats in what seems like a jungle or rainforest. I see sticks of bamboo shooting up from the sides of the boats. I also see white packages or bags on a few of the boats. Some people are moving forward and others are moving towards the back of the line. The people seem to be from India based on their clothing and skin color.
Mrs M (DMS)
@Adrianna Nicely done. Why are they all standing??
Hanan Mohamad Narvaez (Dunkirk NY)
In this picture I see people walking on canoes through a jungle. I can also see children crossing with their parents, I think these people are trying to reach a location through the jungle like a camp or meeting place. In the canoes there are small packages that the people are standing on, the people that are crossing on the canoes also look indian so their location could be in india or something. The picture also seems like these people are on a tour to look at vines, plants and animals around that area. Some people also seem to be going in two different directions because two woman, two men and a child re going right while the others are going left.
Mrs M (DMS)
@Hanan Mohamad Narvaez Good observations Hanan. I am wondering if you thought about why they are standing? Where are they going? Why aren't they just rowing the boats?
addison (6A Dunkirk middle school NY)
i think that these people are trying to cross a jungle with canoes because there is soo much vines i also see that the girls have things over her head and some boys do to so maybe it is a hot day and these people don't want to get sunburnt and also the little kind has a T-shirt and shorts and mabey used canoes because it might be easier to walk on and it looks like there is some king of trash on one of the boats.
Mrs M (DMS)
@addison Good observations. Do you think they are using the boats like we would think a boat is used or do you think they are used for a different purpose?
Ella Biddlecom (Dunkirk,NY)
Team 6A Dunkirk Middle School In this image it looks like People are riding on boats maybe on a very small river that we cannot see? It also looks like in these boats there are boxes or packages that may be full of things like, food clothing, etc. This could also be a path that people use to get from place to place so they don't have to walk through the leaves, or crops to get to another town, or place.
Mrs M (DMS)
@Ella Biddlecom Interesting! I also thought that this was their way to get through the water full of vines. I thought that because the boats are so close together and the people look like they are walking not just sitting and riding in the boat.
Giada (6A DMS)
It appears that there are people walking on boats. I think that the location of this picture is either in a place in South America or in India. It looks like it might be some form of a farm. Maybe a tobacco farm...? I can see very faintly that there is some rope tied to some posts that are tied together. There might be water underneath the boats and since there isn't a bridge, maybe they are using the boats tied together as a bridge.
Mrs M (DMS)
@Giada Good observations. I also believe that they are using this as a type of bridge.
Amy
I think these people try to cross a river covered by water plants and this is the only way to cross the river, and they try to make a way to traversed to go to work or something like that. I see some garbige in some boats ,and they connected the boats to traversed they put too staks and rops to hold the boats .
Cierra (Kansas)
it looks like there are people walking on boats and there's a lot of plants so it looks like the boats are like a bridge for them to be walking around on.
Aaron (kansas)
There are people walking on boats
M-DOG (Windermere)
We believe that the people in the picture are using the boats to transport themselves across a marshy area. It appears that they are walking from boat to boat, and they don't walk in the vegetation. We predicted that this is happening in India based on the people's physical features and clothing. They could possibly be harvesting this plant.
S.C (Windermere)
I think this is somwhere like bangladesh because we learned about how their land is flooding. I think their way of adapting to the changing climate is using boats to get around beetween different villages. I think this because of the clothes they are waering and the country around them. Also the boats look rugged and full of old things.
JKE (England)
I see many adults and children on boats with some empty boats, all in a single-file flotilla. At first I thought they were traveling through a densely vegetated area, but I now think it's a hydroponic field and they are harvesting what's growing there, with the empty boats there to hold their harvest. Some people are looking at the crops, and there is a man bending over them grabbing a rope. I think the ropes and poles help them to move through the water
Estefania (dchs)
I think this photo is somewhere in a city that's located somewhere in like India. where they harvest crops. or it also looks like its a path that they made in order to be able to pass from one side of like a river another side.
Zoe.O COS (Ohio)
I think that people in a village in India are using boats tied to the surrounding vegitation as a bridge. I am lead to believe this because I see a compact path of boats that are not being steered. I also see people walking from boat to boat. Some questions that i still have are: what river is this why are they using boats to make a bridge where are they going
Nikhil (Surrey Uk)
Probably this is Bangladesh given the photographers name. I think people got fed up waiting for government funds for a bridge hence this wonderful idea of a makeshift bridge across the swamp.Alternatively this may be temporary bridge during monsoon season. Life goes on ....undetered
trinh (LA)
Boats have been tied together to create a bridge for traveling over the swamp. There are two reasons to explain for the picture. First, this is a remote and impoverished areas where they are unable to build a cement bridge. The other reason , may be they want to protect their enviroment and the way to attract tourists.
Andrew S. (CMS)
there is a bunch of people walking on the boats
Bridget Lassiter (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
What's going on in the picture seems to look like they are trying to get across a Lake or River to go where they need to be. They have a row of boats lined up together and what seems like is held together by ropes.
Katherine Lennon (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
In this picture I see lots of people possibly families, walking across these boats that look like they could be tied together over some water. They seem to be traveling lightly with little in their hands. There are few children in the photo. Mostly adult men helping each other and the women across the boats. I wonder if this is considered a normal thing for them. Could they just not want to wlk on the plants so they will grow? If something causes them to need the boats do they just go set them up or are they always there?
Highcrest Kids (Illinois)
Maybe this is a lake, river or ocean and people are trying to get from one side to another. It looks more like a lake. They made a walkway with boats. Maybe they are trying to escape from one place and go to another.
GCCSD class (Iowa)
My students think that the people are traveling across a boat bridge. The boats are kept together by ropes. People are going in different directions to get where they are going. My students think that this is happening in India because of the clothes they are wearing. The land is too marshy and they used what they had to make the boat bridge. They may be picking some of the plants.
5th Grade Class Ivy (IL)
Our class thinks this photo takes place in the 2000's and is in an Asian country. We can see this takes place in hot weather, maybe during the summer months. We inferred they could be climbing up or down a mountain. It might be a trail or a path made of boats. We inferred that the boats were older than the actual trail itself (or at least when it was built). Lastly, we wondered if this was a manmade boat trail?
Quiroz (Odessa TX)
My class infers that people from India are crossing a boat bridge because they are using the bridge to harvest the crops.
Domenic Ionno (jean vanier)
these people could be on vacation and they could be taking a hike or just going to find some fruits and vegetables and it looks like they are at a type of place where people would take a hike. it sort of looks like they are in a forest or a village themed place because their are a lot of leaves and the boat bridge sorta looks like a village type.
Maverick Loves T-Bone (Georgia-Michigan-Australian Zoo)
There could be crops in the water like corn, cabbage, water, apples, and onions. The group of people are looking for some vegetables so that they don't have to buy any. The people have no cars and they travel by walking on boats to get where they need to be.The reason they are walking on the boats is because there might be a flood or so that they have a bridge.
Mrs. A.-H.'s 5th Grade Literacy Class (Madison, VA)
My class thinks that this is a bridge of boats being used to possibly get from one place to another. They think that the land could have sunk or flooded. Some think that the people are growing/harvesting the green plants in the picture.
X-Box PDF (Amazon Rain Forest)
This is a boat-bridge that is used for walking on water. They are avoiding the crops so they don't get smashed. They are going uphill or downhill because they are going to get more crops. There could be some tea crops, carrots or some egg plant crops.
James (Kansas)
what I think is happening in this picture is that its around a third world country and that they happened to be crossing this vegetation or have to be getting this from the ground as if it were a crop of some sort. If you ask me I'd say that they were crossing some sort of growth that grows above water so they use boats to be safe from any predators that happened to be around.
Mrs. Johnson 8th Grade (Milbank, SD)
We believe that the people in the picture are using the boats to transport themselves across a marshy area. It appears that they are walking from boat to boat, and they don't walk in the vegetation. We predicted that this is happening in India based on the people's physical features and clothing. They could possibly be harvesting this plant.
DRM (McDonough-Beijing)
1. They are walking to a destination 2. They are walking because they want to go home 3. They could be tending to their crops/harvesting them 4. Whether or not they are doing something, they are going to a place. Whether or not they are going home, they are definitely going somewhere (definitely walking).
darius (Vancouver Washington)
these people might be running away from something
Specials (Africa-Required)
They are sinking and they made a bridge out of boats. They're going separate ways/different places. Their faces are sad. They are probably going to look for food or maybe they are sleeping on the boats because we saw a couple of pillows. There is a man sitting because he is probably tired of walking or he is doing something that we will not mention right now. They built boats so that they can walk through the plants and not get bitten or sickened by any type of animal or plant.
Charlie Brooks (CMS)
I think this is a bridge over a river or stream of water so they can cross over the bridge, but they do not have the materials to make a concrete or steel bridge, so they used boats and bamboo sticks to hold it up.
Specials (Africa-Required)
@Charlie Brooks We like your inference about the boat-bridge in the picture because we feel that you really understood what was going on in the picture
Bridget Lassiter (Hoggard High School In Wilmington, NC)
@Charlie Brooks I completely agree with you
Mrs. Miller's 3rd period class (Helena Middle School)
We think that this is a boat bridge , but it could be from a different perspective or taken from a drone. We think the people are harvesting water crops. The bamboo sticks are stabilizing the boats. We also think this is a modern day photo.
Mrs. Miller's 3rd period class (Helena Middle School)
@Mrs. Miller's 3rd period class 5th period thinks this is a trail of boats leading to a pond.
EBoi (Helena)
They are walking along a bridge of boats to harvest a wetland crop
Lauren (Wisconsin)
I think that this is is there way of traveling though this part of the land. Some people are walking one direction, other people are walking toward another direction. I think that these people are somewhere in Asia next to a lot of rivers, lakes and oceans. I can also see that the plants are very tall.
Jordan (Wisconsin)
I think that they are making a path made of boats to cross the wet lands in India
Jaden (San Mateo)
Indians are trying to cross a river by boat, but there are too many of them and create a walk way. I also see that some people are looking into the field of grass and there might be something there. The boats are purposely put there and are held by wood. It could have been a flood.
Jaden (San Mateo)
They were purposely put there because of the strings
Heather (San Mateo)
@Jaden I notice you looked very closely at the picture, you tried to identify which country this picture was taken and how you imagined the purpose of the boats.
Hunter (The Goat) (Area 51)
I think the people are walking somewhere. They are from a foreign country. I also see a bunch of green plants surrounding them.
Ms. Wicker's 6th Grade Class (He Dog, South Dakota)
I think the ropes and poles help them to move through the water.
Earl Travillion ELL (Mississippi)
We think that there are walking on the boats because those are water plants. If they step on them, they will fall in the water. Thats why they use boats to cross from one side to the other. The boats work like a sidewalk for them without a road or bridge. They look like they are having fun, and this is an interesting way to get around.
Lauren (Wisconsin)
@Earl Travillion ELL I agree with you because if you look closer you can see they have rope on the boat in case anyone falls in. You can also see the boats look like they are in water.
Payton L (South Dakota)
Its looks like people going on like a boat made path, it also so looks like there from a different country because of there clothes.
NLE steve (parmelee)
I think The people don´t want the crops to get dirty so they put boats there.
Karsten (ree town)
they look like they're going to town and back something
cody (south dakota)
its people that are crossing a path of boats, its in a different country
Dylan Sharpe (WTHS.)
They are coming back from work and going home.
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
I notice many people walking on a seemingly man-made path of what looks like a trail of boats. I don’t know why they are walking on the boats or why the path is made out of boats, but they are clearly walking up towards something, some are walking away from it. I also notice that some people are looking through the greenery on the sides, maybe to get food or something else from them.
7.ny times (Hungary)
I think it's in Asia. And these people are fishing. It's maybe a marsh and the boats the bridge. And I think in the white bags on the boats there are some dead body.
Sami A. (LCMS)
First of all, this picture takes place sometime in the past ten years. I know this because it is a very clear picture. Secondly, this picture takes place somewhere in the Middle East or in Asia. I know this because of their clothing and the fact that all of them have similar skin tones. Finally, these people are trying to get from one place to another, but since they don’t have a bridge they are using boats. I know this because they are all walking on the boats and they are all very close together. In conclusion, this shows present-day Middle Easterners or Asians walking across a bridge made out of boats.
Avery Hodges (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
The first thing that drew my attention was what they are walking on. It seems as if there are a group of people walking along a pathway made from boats. From the clothes the people are wearing I assume they are in East-Asia. I think its across some body of water, and used as a bridge to get across.
ENG1P (STCHS)
We think this takes place in a country in south Asia (e.g., India or Pakistan). People are walking across a series of boats that are tied together, and the boats act as a bridge. We wondered if this is an area that has been flooded, and the boats acting as a bridge allowed people to cross a flooded area.
Charlotte Saxton (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@ENG1P I also wonder if the area was flooded or maybe swampy. I don't know why else they would use boats instead of normal bridge/path materials.
Iza Pando (Willcox, AZ age 9)
Carefully, in a field of plants during the afternoon may people are walking on boats because the field of plants is deep.
Jordan (Wisconsin)
@Iza Pando I agree because this is why they might be using the boats
Kira (Colonial middle school)
In this picture it looks like people are crossing a field using boats as stairs.
Miss Nicki's Resource (Vancouver, BC)
Div 1 We think the people in this photo are - crossing a bridge made out of boats - they are harvesting plants - they are trying to avoid getting wet - we think this may be happening in India because of the clothing - we think this is a photo in the newspaper because it isn't something we commonly see in North America Class of 2020 WMES - People are walking on boats somewhere, maybe around a mountain, maybe a farm - The people might be looking for a new place to live; they might be moving because there house is not safe; they might be refugees - They aren't walking in the water because it may be dangerous (don't know how to swim; poisonous animals; disease)
Div 1 Buds WMES (Vancouver, BC)
- we think the people in this photo are crossing a bridge made out of boats - they are harvesting plants - they are trying to avoid getting wet - we think this may be happening in India because of the clothing - we think this is a photo in the newspaper because it isn't something we commonly see in North America
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
This picture shows a long path of boats. It looks like it may just be step, but you can see on the boats that there are machines or engines. I would assume that they would be in water because boats wouldn't typically be on land, so the plants may be in a swampy area. It seems as though the people in this picture are walking from boat to boat, looking downhill, maybe to get to the bottom. I wonder if they are migrating or at least using to boats to go somewhere. The boats could also serve as a bridge so the people can move to other land. I think this picture comes from Asia, near the Arabian Sea or Indian Ocean, within the past ten years based on their clothing and how clear the picture is to see.
Ms. V Period 8 (Nebraska)
We think that people in present-day India are crossing a field using the boats as a bridge.
Mrs Dupuch 4th grade class (Mesquite, Tx)
Perhaps they are crossing the bridge, during the summertime, to avoid getting in the water or getting bit by snakes. It could mean that the people were crossing the bridge from a different location.
Michelle Petrova (Milwaukee Jewish Day School)
In this picture we see two possible options. First, the boats make a path. Then, people use the path to travel from one place to another, maybe on water, maybe through swamps, or on a mountain. Our other idea is the people are doing some sort of harvest or fishing or hunting, again either on a mountain or by water.
Mr. Patterson's English II 8th Period (Dayton HS)
They are picking fruit from the plants instead of getting wet (the plants grow in water). They are using the boats as a bridge to get to the other side of the marsh. Maybe they are villagers trying to get into the city to buy goods.
Mrs. D ELA (Pittsburgh, PA)
Good afternoon! These people are using the boats to cross over the water. They are harvesting the leaves. They had to be creative because they didn't have enough materials to make stairs so they tied boats together. This is present day in India.
Dua (Wisconsin)
In this picture, I see adults mostly and a few kids crossing boats. The reason I say that is because I see people crossing the boats and that they are connected together so people can walk across them. I can see that the boats are helping people get from one point to the next and to where ever they need to be.
James (Wisconsin, United states)
In the picture, I see that there are a lot of families on boats crossing a field. They might be avoiding something in the field that might hurt them. They also might be trying not to hurt the crop by tieing boats together.
Avery Hodges (Hoggard Highschool in Wilmington, NC)
@James I disagree that they are avoiding something that could hurt them, I believe that they are using the boats as a bridge or to pick crops that are growing in the water, making it easier so that they don't have to get wet or have a chance of ruining the crops.
Brooklyn (Wisconsin)
In the picture, I believe that the people in this image needed a path to walk through to get to their destination. They didn't want to get into the river and get wet, so they used boats as their path to get across. What makes me say that is a long string that may be a rope connecting the boats together. There are plants on the side of them. They most likely don't want to walk through that.
Mrs. I (Wisconsin)
In the picture, I see people of many different ages stepping across boats. The boats appear to be linked together with ropes, which makes me think that people may use them to walk this route often. A young child leads the way, and people look over the sides of the boats to check out what is happening in the underbrush growing out of the water. I would guess that the boats keep people protected from needing to walk through the water, which could be uncomfortable and potentially dangerous!
Andrew (Alta Aurelia)
I think this is in India because of their clothing. I also think that it is either an event or some sort of land mark or major attraction in that area. And I also saw boats, I think that the boats are so they don’t step on the plants.
nafissa (wi)
The picture seems like it shows people walking down stairs of boats with cement in it. There are boats with things that look like cement blocks. Weeds, people, sticks, boats, cement blocks, and a pillow.
irving (A-A High School)
I think that the people are useing boats to walk on them and I think there is no water. Why? Because of the plants and I think this is in India Why? Because of there Indian clothes.
JR (Milwaukee WI)
What is going on in this picture? People standing on boats with their family What do you see that makes you think that? I see boats and I see Men and Women on standing on them or A mom and son. What more can you find? Plants
nafissa (wi)
@JR agreed
Mr. Patterson's English II 7th Period (Dayton HS)
They are forming a bridge across the marshy water with boats. It's probably in India. They could be rural people who have to cross this marsh to get to town to shop.
Mrs. Miller's 3rd grade (PA)
Asians are walking on boats to avoid the water. They used string and bamboo to connect the boats. The boats are surrounded by big clovers.
ryan (ireland)
This looks like a tourist attraction or this a tradition this looks like it is in a rainforest so it is probably somewhere wet like South america this could also be in Europe. This could also be people traveling to another place because for there health and safety.
Ms. Corrigan’s 3-5 Enrichment Class (Norridge, IL)
We think this picture might be in India because of the clothing. We also think this picture was taken in the spring or summer because of all the greenery and the people’s clothing. This is some type of path made of boats. We think the path is there so people don’t have to walk through shallow water and get wet. They might be trying to cross over water.
Mrs. D ELA (Pittsburgh, PA)
There is a man-made boat bridge somewhere in southeast Asia. People use it as a means of travel to get places. The bridge keeps them safe from snake-infested waters. This is present day and the people appear serene.
JR (Milwaukee WI)
@Mrs. D ELA your probably right
kile (sifton)
it looks like there jumping hammock to hammock
Mr. Patterson's English II 6th Period (Dayton HS)
It is a bridge across marshy waters (made of boats). They are traveling from a certain destination to another for essential goods. Maybe they are harvesting crops.
Dylan Reed (Canada, ON)
This picture is the main route to get across the river in a small town somewhere in कोटा, India. The outfit that the people are wearing gives the impression of the area I think the picture located. The river is poorly maintained, seeing that there are leaves growing from the river itself.
Lauren (Poway, CA)
In this picture it's seems to be a bunch of old boats that are wooden in a staircase shape, to cross somewhere surrounded in a very green area that looks muddy. A lot of people are crossing this boat bridge to seem to get across the swampy area to either get something or go somewhere maybe to do farming or some type of work. I think that this picture might have taken place in India.
sarah (san diegp)
It seems like this is located in India. There are a lot of green plants around them. These people are also standing and walking across boats as if it were a bridge. The women are also covered in hijabs or head scarfs which is another reason why i think they would be located in India, since a lot of their population is Muslim.
Carleigh (Abraxas)
I notice in this photo that there are people walking across a bunch of boats that are set up in a vertical line. This tells me that these boats are probably not being used in water but rather as more of a bridge. I also think that this takes place somewhere in maybe India. I think this because the women are wearing hijabs and they look like they are possibly Indian. I think these boats are probably on top of the water and that’s why they are using boats as a bridge.
Seibert's Class (Austin)
people walking on boats over water like a bridge of boats. Probably somewhere in Asia
Jose (Abraxas)
In this picture you can see a row of boats placed by each other. The people are using the boats to help them cross over the marshy water. This seems to be taking place in India since the women in the picture look to be Indian.
Bob (Poland)
These people are walking on a boat stairs street. It is possibly a plantation of something around them.
Noble (Wisconsin)
People are standing on boats farming The Boats and people bending over to harvest crops All people are african american
Mr. Patterson's English II 5th Period (Dayton HS)
It's a bridge across marshy waters in Bangladesh during Monsoon season. One student says it looks like steps.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think this picture is taken place in some Asian country, like India. The boats are mostly filled with boys and men and are only two women in the whole picture. This looks like they are making a temporary bridge out of boats. The boats are held by poles. It seems like there is water under the greenery which could be a marsh. This seems very temporary and could end up becoming a bridge at some point.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
In this picture it looks like their are many people in a crowed river of some kind, with many boats packed next to each other. There seems to be along of greenery around the people in the boats, so maybe they are gathering waterer veggie is growing in the water to eat. Also in some boats it looks like their are bags of fish so those boats might of gathered fish on their way to the river with the vegetation.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
I believe that these people are farmers working in a marsh. The people are growing their crops in a bog and need boats to reach the middle of it. You can tell that they are workers because they are reaching down to grab some of the plats and they boats have bags on them that could possibly be used to carry the plants. the people are in a middle eastern country based off of their skin color and outfits. The women are covering their heads, a common statement that women in middle eastern countries wear. This is a recent photo because it is in color.
Barbara Gerber (Santa Fe, NM)
These people have tied together boats to make a walkway through a swampy area. Some of the women are probably Muslims, judging by their hijabs. This appears to be a pretty warm, tropical place — maybe Bangladesh?
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Barbara Gerber Thats a really good thought! I didn't even think about or notice the fact that they were walking along boats, and that the boats were tied with string. Maybe because of that they all work together!
Dua (Wisconsin)
@Barbara Gerber - I also do agree because they are wearing hijabs and you can assume that they are Muslim.
Mr. Patterson's English II 4th Period (Dayton HS)
Here are some inferences from my students: -Migrating to another place -Using the boats a bridge -Fishing -India?
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Mr. Patterson's English II 4th Period I agree, maybe they are in India because of their appearance, and also how crowed the picture looks, and India is one of the most populated countries in the world.
Cypress (Miami)
Cypress class: We think that these people are in Asia because they are wearing clothes that resemble the muslim/indian culture. We think that they are using the boats as a path to go across shallow water. We think that some people may be searching for food.
gabe (Wisconsin)
people are walking on boats to get across i think is a river. I think that because I see a little boy in the front and plenty of others walking on a boat and around them is like greens plants growing out of the water. I also see like a bamboo stick coming out of the water on the left side of the picture right by the boat.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@gabe Hi, Why do you think they are walking on the boats? Where are they going? What is the point of the bamboo sticks? Thanks
meghan (glendale)
i belive that the people in this picture are traveling. i saw this bc of the boats on the water and i could maybe find out where they are heading too.
Mrs. Harper (Texas)
Good Morning, We believe this image is of a bridge on land created by boats. They are in Indonesia or Asia. Maybe the plants are too dense for them to walk through. This is used to get them from place to place easily. The boats are tied together. Their clothes are clean so they are probably not working with the plants. There are stones on the boat to keep them in place.
Mrs. D ELA (Pittsburgh, PA)
Good morning. We think this is a dock made of boats. Perhaps it is a family-owned business where they farm green plants from the water. They are somewhere in the Middle East or Asia in present day late morning.
Carlee (PHS)
There are boats lined up in between plants, maybe they are crops of some kind. The boats are being used as a bridge and are tied together. There's stones inside the boats. They are from somewhere in Asia, maybe somewhere middle eastern.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Carlee Where do you see the rocks? From what I can see the boats are held by some sort of pole, instead of rocks.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Carlee There are not stones inside the boats, but if there were, what do you think they would be used for?
Mr. Patterson's English II 2nd (Dayton HS)
We think that the boats serve as a bridge across marshy waters. Maybe they use the bridge to bring food back to their homes; thus, the bridge is vital for their survival. The vegetation also must serve a purpose. Maybe they are harvesting a crop.
Julia (Nebraska)
There are a row of boats with people on them and bags it looks like. They are in this river with a lot of leaves floating, and I think they are picking it because they are farmers. I think they are also fishing in the river because there are poles and some of them are sitting there waiting. I think they are in India.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Julia I agree this people could be farmers. But, they most likely not because there are children and the people are not dressed for farming
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Julia why do you think these people are farmers? If they are, would you be suggesting that the children in the photo are workers as well?
Jozlyn (PHS)
I think that the boats are a trail
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Jozlyn Hi, I agree that the boats are a trail, but where are they going? Why do these people need the trail?
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think this is in another country because of their clothing. We noticed there are many boats and we think it is in a type of swamp. There is a lot of vegetation around the boats as well. We think they are maybe looking at something because there is a crowd towards the middle of the picture and people are moved from boat to boat to see it. This looks like a water traffic jam.
Mrs. D ELA (Pittsburgh, PA)
Good morning from Pittsburgh, PA. We think that the boats are being used as a temporary bridge to cross over the water. The people could be farmers harvesting the green plants. The poles could be used to stabilize the boats. We think the setting is present day in India or Pakistan.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
It looks like the boats are being used as a bridge to get over the vegetation. It seems like this situation is a temporary fix. Using the boats could mean that there is water under all the vegetation or some sort of flooding. Based on the appearance of the people, they look like they could be of Middle Eastern or Indian Descent. The poles look like they’re being used to stabilize the line of boats.
P5G (Scotland)
They are getting the boats and the crops ready before a storm. We think it is in a hot country such as India or parts of Asia.
David L (Columbus, Ohio)
I think the people are using the line of boats as a bridge to get over a body of water. The fact that the water they're walking over is full of plants and the rather unusual type of bridge makes me think that some sort of flood has happened. The fact that they can walk on the boats without the boats swaying and making them fall into the water means that the water is quite shallow. The picture is probably taken in a warmer climate, based on the plantlike around the boats. My first guess is somewhere in India, or somewhere in that part of the world. I say that because of the clothing the people in the photo are wearing.
La Salle Sagrado Corazón 2C ESO (Madrid, Spain)
Hi, we are from Spain. We think that the image is in the Amazons, Thailand, India, or Morocco. We think that they are crops and the people had to build a path or bridge with boats to walk across without destroying. It could be rice because rice grows in water. It's in the 21st century. The people who are walking over the bridge are farmers. And the people built this bridge to not destroy the plants. We think the picture is interesting and original and you can have a lot of theories about what is happening. We love it. Goodbye from Spain! P.S. Put pictures of Spain!
Yates Kirby (Hoggard High School)
It looks like vegetation has overgrown the waterways in a poor southeast Asian country and the boars are being used as a path way or a way to harvest the plants.
Calvin (San Mateo)
The boats are stringed together to act as a bridge for crossing the lake or river. The river may not be very deep as it is filled with plants.
Jessie (Ontario)
I think that the people in the picture got creative and built a bridge out of old boats to get across the grassy field. I predict that this picture was taken in a village that has many crops, they had no other way to go past the crops so they used wooden boats to get passed it.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@Jessie What do you mean by "got creative"? There has to be a reason why they did it.
Vivian Wang (PCC)
People are walking across a bridge which are connected by boats. I saw rope link each boat together and there are several bamboo poles, maybe used for fixing these boats. It is a picture that took in a developing country. The industry is less developed, the weather is hot there.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@Vivian Wang I agree. But, how do you know it's hot there?
Ella aose (New Jersey)
I think that this is a group of people traveling across a boat path through the marsh. The boats are tied to bamboo poles, so they are not trapped and they are not going anywhere on the boats. The people here seem Indian and most of them are men or boys. None of them look very tense, and one group of boys is looking at something in the marshy plants, leading me to believe that this path isn't here for any critically important reason, just for transport or aesthetic reasons.
Ella aose (New Jersey)
In this picture, there is a group of people traveling or sight-seeing along a path made of boats through the marshy brush. The people here all seem to be Indian, with one child and many adults on the path. There are mostly men here, with about two women. There is a group of boys in the back looking at something in the water, possibly just the plants, leading me to assume that the plants are not dangerous, and this might just be for aesthetic purposes. The boats are also tied to poles, so they are not going anywhere.
Mayestica (Dubai UAE)
I think this is a picture of people crossing a hyacinth-infested river by walking on a row of boats parked across the river. We have something similar to this in Kalimantan, Indonesia, where there are is a grocery market on a river and both buyers and sellers navigate through the market by riding their own boats. It's such a unique sight
Jude Lucido (Hoggard High School, Wilmington NC)
I think this picture shows problem-solving, and the power of teamwork. Since they are using boats, I'd assume there is water under them. There was no bridge available, so together, all these people set up a line of boats and made their own bridge, available for others to use.
Taelyn W (CMS)
a trial of bouts to keep people from steeping on the plants
jasmine kirk (65020)
What is going on in this picture is it looks like native Americans are walking on boats and it looks like it's on a trail
Garrttm (cms)
It looks like they are in a boat in a river.
Mark (New York)
The picture is confusing to me, because how can the people walk through the grasslands on boats? Aren't there supposed to be floods around them? Does it look stabled? It might feel stabled to walk on boats.
David L (Columbus, Ohio)
@Mark I had the same idea. You can usually not stand in a boat, without falling into the water. My guess is that that the water isn't very deep, so the boats are comfortably sitting on the bottom, rather than floating. Although they could definitely be supported by something underneath that keeps it stable.
Stephanie Quinones (Dodge City, KS)
People placed boats as a path to walk through after a flood. They are checking up on their plants.
Lily (Alta iowa)
I believe that the people are walking on fantastic boat bridge that was built. I say this because there is a lot of genius people in this world with so many amazing ideas people think of and the boat bridge is one of so many magnificent things built.
angel (alta-aurelia iowa)
I think— 18 people and 1 children walking in the boats. They don’t have stairs but they have boats to walk in the boats.the farmers are checking the plants after it was flooded after a rain storm. This takes place is in South Arabia.
Rolando (Kansas)
People made a bridge with boats. It looks like a bridge out of boats. People walking on the boat-bridge thing.
Yajaira (Kansas)
I feel like the picture is showing how other people in a different country travel over a river using boats.
Aaron (kansas)
I see boats moving in a kinda zip zag move.
marcos (Alta-Aurelia High School)
In the middle east there is a plantation that has boats that are used as a sidewalk.
Michele (Kansas)
In a foreign country, a handful of farmers checking their plants after it was flooded after a rain storm.
Alexis (Dodge City, Ks)
What I think is going on is they made a bridge of boats over a lake full of plants. I think they are just walking over a farm.
domingo (dodge city ks)
waling over the boats so they can do as little damage the all the crops around them this way they can pick them with out harming them.
Briekyne (Kansas)
I think in this photo the people are using the boats as a pathway or for something to walk on and they are using the bamboo to keep the boats up. The people are from a foreign country and most the women are wearing scarves and dresses, and the men are wearing button up shirts or no shirts.
Hyla 8th graders (Bainbridge Island, WA)
We think that the people are using the boats to cross an overgrown lake or river. Or marshes. Is it possible that it is the rainy season (monsoon)? Are they harvesting the plants? Or just trying to get from Point A to Point B? They may have used the large bamboo poles to move the boats together. We are thinking that this may be taken in India.
david A (cms)
That looks like a bridge of boats maybe there on the water?
Aidan Webster (CMS)
they are on the water trying to make a bridge of boats.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
Ok everyone, keep digging and wondering. Remember to check in here on Thursday to learn more about this image & what's going on here. Your ideas inspire us. Thank you for participating. Keep the conversation going. The VTS moderator will be back next week.
Rolando (Kansas)
People made a bridge out of boats for those who don't have boats.
Marlon Martinez (Dodge City, KS)
It looks like the people are walking on what seems to be a bridge but looks like boats? They are looking over into the plants and seems to be that there are a lot more people but the picture shows less. It looks like farm and it looks like there's bamboos holding the boats. I think the people are plucking food or something in the picture.
All Saints School (Sunrise, Fl)
Our 6th grade students stated that it looks like people from a village in India are migrating back to their village after a natural disaster.

people in a potential Arab country are walking across boats to get to a certain place
Andrew S. (CMS)
they are under the water that looks like bridge

Many have noticed the headscarf worn in this picture. Some are calling it a hijab, a head covering worn in public by some Muslim women. The notion that we are identifying religion has led some people to attempt to place this image somewhere specific in the world. This sounds like a rich opportunity to do a little research. Where are certain religions practiced around the world? By how many people? These images can inspire not only our creative imaginations but they can also engage us in learning more. What are you wondering about now that you have spent time with this image? What's your questions? Go do a little research and share back what you have learned.
Damian (Lyons NY)
They are walking on boats for sure but how are getting held up by bamboo it would snap in the marsh for sure cause the mud is more hevy than the bamboo, the boats also some way have not sank.Nothing ealse i saw i think this is fake.
Mrs. Z's class (Three Springs, PA)
People are using boats as a bridge to cross the marshes.
Brenyn (lyons ny)
i see boats and people walking on them and i see trees and sticks.i see bags and sticks and I see blankets. i see kids and most woman wearing scarves around their neck and men with no shirt. I think that they are poor and they are liveing in the boats
OK (CHS)
In my opinion, I think they are in a foreign country due to their skin tone. Maybe they've done this before. because in front there is a child wandering all carelessly like most kids. He looks like he knows his way around and the guardians let him wander around. They are using boats to walk on or they might be farmers signifying the guy in blue and white stripes bending down in the middle. My 3rd assumption is the path might be flooded why they are using boats there.
Mays (Ottawa)
I think the boats are just a pathway for them because everyone is going in a different direction. They seem to know what they are doing and they look like they are used to going back and forth. They do not look like they are sick or running aware of something. They are in a Muslim county because the women are wearing hijab and their skin tone is dark so I think the image has been taken in Africa.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
The power of deductive reasoning... @ Cas says, "The women look like they are used to this sort of thing, and that there isn’t any form of danger, since if there was, they would stop the little boy from running ahead." There have been several theories floating around - from evacuation to journey to ancient lands. @Cas shares a perspective and evidence that this is a relaxed, common occurrence we are witnessing.
Mario (Toronto)
In this picture the viewer sees a lot of boats lined up but not in a straight line caused from the waves of the water. The boats are there to help the people cross or to get to a crops location. Based on this photo the skin colour of the people and how the men look like they’re doing some kind of field work and the women are walking along the boats behind the kid, makes me think that the location is somewhere in east asia.
Gianna F (LCMS)
2/24/20 In this picture, it shows a path that maybe leads to a land that was discovered a long time ago. I know this because of the clothes that they are wearing and the objects they are steeping on to get to the land. The picture shows that this could be taken place near India. I know this because of the weather also a type of wetland where the plants grow out of the water. I noticed in the picture how some people are going different ways and maybe they are trying to find crops or another source like food or water. I know this because the people are facing going in another direction. Based on the evidence this was taken in India where the wetland plants are located.
ian (ottawa ontario)
In this picture I was sitting here determining which aspects of the are important and non important with further analysis I can only assume that the boats are acting as a path/bridge. After I noticed some small stuff happening in the photo like the fact that the boats are fastened together, and that i looks like the man wearing the blue striped shirt is trying to harvest some of the plants. Then I got to thinking about where this image took place my first guess was south asia because the two women in this picture are wearing hijabs. But just guessing that they were in south asia was something I didn't wanna do so with some research i determine the plants maybe fresh growing spinach and spinach grows primarily in south asia.
All Saints School (Sunrise, Fl)
Our students noticed linked boats and heavy vegetation in the picture. They concluded that that the boats were used to cross the heavy vegetation, almost like a bridge. The students guessed that this was some where in Asia. They noticed the people wearing traditional clothes.
jonah (ottawa ontario)
This picture looks as if there are people attempting to get across a hazardous area as the people exclusively walk on the boats but they don’t seem to be afraid to touch the plants because if you look at the guy wearing the blue and white shirt (he is also chrouching) is touching the plants so they are probably not poisonous so my best guess to what the hazard they are avoiding is some kind on venomous or otherwise dangerous animal that cannot climb the plants more evidence is that the boats look as though they have been hastily put together as evidenced by the bamboo supports that are misaligned and they definitely were not professionally done probably because they couldn’t get professionals to do it because it's dangerous you may see it and think they are running from some natural disaster but it is not a natural disaster as you can see there are people moving both ways, if this was a natural disaster then people would only run away speaking of running most people are not running if i was in a disaster area i would run there is even a kid jumping between them.
Lily (Lyons central school district)
i see lots of plants or crops but i don't see any water in the image so i wonder why there are boats. i think they are walking across the boats to get to their village or town and they are walking on the boats for protection
Not Devon (Ottawa, ON)
In the photo, I see two women, wearing hijabs, making me think that the photo was taken in the Middle East to South Asia. I also noticed that there is a bag on the boat in front of the boy, which I think is weight because the boat can flip with body weight, so it needs to be balanced. I also notice the lush green plants next to the boats, and bamboo, which supports my claim that this is in South Asia
Lily (Lyons central school district)
@Not Devon i agree that it looks like the photograph was taken in south Asia but what else can you find to completely know that it is in south Asia. what about the men?
joey (Canterbury.h.s)
It looks to me that they are using the boats as a bridge to cross all the crops so that they don't ruin the plants by walking where they are growing. The boats are tied together so they don't come apart when they get old. Everyone there seems pretty comfortable with the area so they don't have to keep close watch on the kids.
Emilie.B (Lyons,NY)
1. What is going on in this picture i think that they are trying to get across by using boats instead of just walking because they don't want to walk on to the plants 2. what do you see that makes you say that what i see that makes me say that is in the picture i notice that the boats are all tied together witch means that they basically made a bridge out of boats. I also see people walking in different directions witch i think means that the bridge that hey made out of boats people use to go back and fourth. 3. what more can you find i also notice that in the picture that around 2 to 3 people are kinda looking of the boats.
Elisabeth T. (Lyons NY)
I don't think that's right. I think they are for getting across the water but also for getting to their town.
conner (lyons,NY)
I see boats and it looks like there is a trail of them so it is a boat trail and there could be water under the plants and a lot of people are walking on it.,and it is not in a straight line. It is a big field of land and plants.
Ella aose (New Jersey)
@conner Do you think they are using the boats for anything else?
kevin (Lyon ny)
In the picture has a wooden boat bridge and rode connected to the wooden pillars. All the wood in the grass. loads of grass or plants.
Hanna (Lyons)
People are walking a cross lots of boats that have ropes holding the boats together from fall.It looks like the people are carrying heavy thing over the boats to deliver stuff to the other side.
jayson (ly)
They was a Bridge but think it Iprobably broken down so they gathered the new canoes for a bridge now they can walk back and forward
Jordan J (LCMS)
The people are muslim. I know this because the women are wearing Hijabs. The people are at a crop farm. I know this because they are walking on a bridge made of boats and there are some types of plants that are growing around the boat bridge. They are in Algeria. I know this because a lot of muslamic people live there. Therefore this picture takes place in Algeria with muslims at a crop farm.
Vivian Wang (PCC)
@Jordan J I have been confused about in which country the picture was taken. I think your answer is a kind of make sense. Let wait for the result.
jacob alex (ottawa ontario)
I think that they are using the boats as a bridge/path way to get across the water and crops. The crops look like spinach and that is a native plant to central and western Asia. The people also look very distinct to native people that live in western Asia. They also look like they are used to this because of the one woman in front is letting her son go ahead probably because she knows that it is safe and ok for her son.
Cas (Ottawa)
It looks like it’s a bridge made of decommissioned boats that are being used by the local community. By the way that they use bamboo sticks to hold the boats together, my best guess is that the image was taken somewhere in a tropical region. The women look like they are used to this sort of thing, and that there isn’t any form of danger, since if there was, they would stop the little boy from running ahead. Maybe they are harvesting the plant, since there is a man reaching over the side of the boat. Overall, it just looks like a bridge made of boats that allows the community to cross over a marsh.
Brooke k (Lyons NY)
in this picture i see a lot of boats with people on them and a lot of tall green grass on the side and what makes me see that is they look like wooden boats and i see people and like leafy stuff so i thought it looked a lot like grass.
hanna (Lyons)
@Brooke k . too mush land with lots of grass and that very good.but whats holding them so they don't fall.
gavin (lyons,ny)
when i looked at the picture, the people are waking on boats and i think the boat are a staircase to a land that was discovered a long time ago.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
@gavin it sounds like you have the beginning of a fantasy story here. These images can be wonderful places for our imaginations to create something totally new. Keep going
braeden (lyons ny)
i think they gathered all there boats so they can go across the river or what ever they crossing . the boats and the water and the people made me think this. more i can find is they are surrounded by plants they look like they might be in India it might be there transportation to get some where.
Elisabeth T. (Lyons NY)
1.It looks like people are walking along boats to avoid walking on the plants. 2.There are ropes connecting the boats so its easier to walk on. 3.some people are looking at the plants/grass.
Brooke k (Lyons NY)
@Elisabeth T. i think yours is really good
Emilie.B (Lyons,NY)
@Elisabeth T. Hi . I don't think that thy used the boats so it was easy to walk on
hanna (Lyons)
@Elisabeth T. its not easier to walk on the boats because there might be no room to walk.they might be looking at the grass.the rope is hold so they won't fall
Avila 5th Grade (Texas)
We think the image shows a path or tour that leads to a land that was discovered a long time ago. The land may show great importance to their culture.
braeden (lyons ny)
@Avila 5th Grade i dont think that is true but that is my opinion
Mrs. Williams' 2nd GR (Midlothian, TX)
In this picture we see a lot of boats that look kind of like a stari case. We see a lot of green, tall grass. We see people that might be from India. We can see that some people are going different ways on the boats. We think the boats might me stuck. Maybe the boats are seperating something, There might be water under all of the green leaves. Maybe it flooded where these people are so they have to use boats for transportiatn. We wonder if the boats are going to water. Did their homes collapse and they have to live on the boats? I wonder if they are getting sea sick.
Ms. Hakimian's 4th grade (New York)
We think this takes place in or near India. It looks like this is a marsh or a type of wetland where plants are growing in water. It appears as if the people are harvesting or collecting crops. The boats seem to be tied together so it's used as a sort of floating bridge.
M.Fong (Toronto, Canada)
We think there has been some sort of natural disaster in this region. People are trying to evacuate. The boats are being used as a bridge. Grade 5/6
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
@M.Fong a natural disaster you say? What do you see that makes you think that people are "evacuating"? You have created quite a story in this brief comment full of plot and character. What more can you find?
WSD (Vancouver, WA)
We see ropes that are connecting the boats. The ropes could be used for the people to avoid walking on the plants. They want the plants to be clean. We see that the boats are flat. There are no seats. I see a string with a line to hold from boats and bamboo together. Maybe people need to stay away from plants or poisonous animals.
kevin (Lyon ny)
@WSD it is a good conclusion but i thing the plants are poisonous
Zoe (Michigan)
It looks like people are crossing a bridge made of boats over a marsh. It doesn't look like it was a party of boats that got stuck in the marsh, because people are walking in different directions and the boats are tied together and tied to support poles. The supports appear to be made of bamboo so the climate is probably more tropical. Because of the lush green plants and choice of clothing it is probably spring or summer where this picture was taken.
Ella aose (New Jersey)
@Zoe Nice detail! Do you think the plants had any kind of purpose, or are just there for no reason?
Zoe (Michigan)
@Ella aose I think that the plants are just naturally growing there. I recently heard that there are some invasive plants that can completely take over lakes and rivers. That might be what is happening here.
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Intro to Photo class Looks like India or South Asia based on dress and people. Boats made into a walkway somehow connected. Looks like bog or aquaponics where a crop of something is growing. Maybe getting ready to harvest. What are the poles? Maybe used to anchor the boats, they are bamboo. One child, mostly adults, mostly males.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
@Photo class Villa Maria College - I am curious about your handle @PHOTO CLASS... what more can you find from your "photo class" lens. Some have identified this as a photography but we haven't heard much about the elements related to the medium of photography.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
It looks like the people in the picture are migrating to a certain location. At the moment that the picture was taken, it appears that the boats were caught in a marsh. Looking at the boats, they seem to be tied together forming a bridge. This might be because the people have reached their destination and are unable to continue by boat, so they might be rushing to land across the boats. The picture was probably taken in an eastern hemisphere country, judging from the outfits and the environment.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
@Lillie P I hear you wondering about whether or not people are traveling in this image. @Hannah is proposing this could be a moment of festivity. Others are thinking this could be an image harvesting or farming. Working to find all the possibilities is important...and there could always be another way of thinking about this image. @Woody is thinking about what we CAN'T see "there might be animals or poisonous in the water, so they don't want to fall in" What more can we find?
Kaitlyn (Pennsylvania)
It looks like a lot of people on boats harvesting water-Borne crops.
ZA (Windsor Ontario)
I think that these people are going to see this tourist attraction. I think the tourist attraction is stairs, and the steps are botes. there are many people that are on the botes and are there to see it because its so cooI. Also think that this was somewhere in Africa.
madison (ontario)
1. there are a lot of people standing on wooden boats in a field of greenery 2. I see people looking out into the field while standing up on a curvy row of brown boats 3. I find that they all seem to be of another race/culture, it may be a tradition or job where they come from
christina (ontario canada)
it looks like a path made by these boats through the marsh. and people are using this path to get to the other side of the marsh
hannah (canada)
People are walking up and down boats like stairs up the mountain. it could be a landmark somewhere in the world, that could be from some kind of nation event like a war or festival type event, or could even be a tradition or something in festivals or something.
Kayle McLaughlin (windsor, ON)
Whats going on in this picture? It looks like people most likely in an asian country such as Indonesia or the Philippines and it looks like people are moving on a path within a field of crops What do you see that makes you think that? The people seem to be using the boats as a path instead of transportation, the boats being used as a walkway tells me that there isnt any ground and the crops are growing in the water. what more can you find? there are poles holding stuff up maybe keeping the boats in place within the crops

Our friends at @LCMS - I am noticing a pattern in your comments. You share an idea or a theory like @Kaitlin B "The boats are in shallow water". Then you all provide evidence for your theory. ... "I can infer this because the plants are so overgrown that you are unable to see it [the water]" You are demonstrating & practicing critical observation and reasoning skills in your writing. Sometimes we don't have a strong theory with evidence. When we wonder and speculate we are still exercising critical thinking skills. @EmilyAOSE says "the boats they could be laid down this way because..." @Grade 3 Rocks comments "we are unsure of where they could be going" and "We think, that by looking at the bamboo sticks, they might be in Asia. We also wonder why the women are wearing such colorful, bright clothes" Using "might be" "unsure of" "could be" allows us to consider and reconsider multiple theories at one time. THIS is also essential for critical analysis and can prevent us from jumping to assumptions.

The people are walking across the boats that have made a bridge. I know this because all the boats are tied together.
Chastity (canada)
there is people going across a bridge made of boats.
Lauren (Ontario)
cultured people standing on boats floating through a lagoon because all the people are in boats so it tells me they're in water but the leaves and lilipads cover it so its clearly not a normal body of water
sandra (windsor ont)
I think people are simply trying to walk across this field using these little boats due to the plants being too long to walk through which could be dangerous. It could be a tourist area or just an area in this country where these people are looking for supplies or food.
Megan (canada)
I think it could be in Thailand because they walk on boats over water I forget if its Thailand aha

whats going on in this photo?, this photo looks like a rural farming field probably somewhere in the middle east with what looks like possibly Muslim or Filipino people walking along a trail of boats harvesting likely some sort of vegetables that grow in the water.
DALLAS (CMS)
it is a brige made out of boats because i think they could not find any thing else
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@DALLAS I agree with you. Where do you think the bridge is leading to? or from?
Ricardo M (LCMS)
This picture takes place in a rural area that is surrounded by nature. I know this because nothing but plants are surrounding the boats that the people are walking on. The people in this picture support the Muslim religion. I know this because the women in this picture are wearing hijabs which is a part of the Muslim religion. This picture takes place in an ancient area. I know this because the boats appear to have dust on them and rust can be seen on some of the objects in the boat. In conclusion, this picture takes place in a rural area where a group of Muslim people is visiting an ancient area.
Woody (Washington DC)
We think the boats are floating and they are in water. The people are not trying to escape anything. That's their usual routine. The people live there. I think the top of the water is seaweed. The boats might be a bridge for them to get across the water. There might be animals or poisonous in the water, so they don't want to fall in. It might just be a bridge of boats.
Ava C (LCMS)
This picture takes place somewhere in India. I know this because the people in the photo have darker skin and hair and the women in the picture are wearing hijabs. Hijabs are an indication of the Muslim religion, which is very common in India. Because India has large ranges of vegetation, the people in the photo are using connected rowboats to walk through a stream in the middle of it. I can conclude this because there are several rowboats connected by some type of rope in the picture with people walking on them. The people would not be walking on the rowboats unless they were sturdy, like a bridge. The people in this photo are walking on the rowboat bridge in order to get a good view of the vegetation around them. This can be inferred by the fact that many people on the bridge are standing and admiring the plant around them as they cross. In conclusion, this picture takes place somewhere in India where people are crossing a bridge made of rowboats in order to get a good view of the vegetation.
Heather (San Mateo)
I think the picture took in Southern Asia like India on the water pond. So many green plants growing in the pond. People are trying to cross the pond, they found a smart way to pass by connecting the wooden boats. So the people can walk on the boat to cross the pond. I can tell people were very cautious when they walk on the boat and tried to balance the boat, not to tip it over. Because most of the people are looking down at their feet. The young kid walked at the front because the kids are usually less fearful than adults.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
@Heather you have created fearless character for us to think about in that child. What do you see that makes you say the child is in the "front" of the group - or leading the way?
Lillie P (LCMS)
The setting of the photo is in India. I know this because all the people in the photo have colored skin and dark hair. Also, the women are wearing hijabs and attire that people wear in India. The people are walking in a rainforest. I know that the setting is a rain forest because there are very green plants in the photo. In addition, the people are walking on boats, which we can assume means they are near or on water. Also, all the vegetation is very lush, which could only be in a rainforest. The people are fleeing their countries. This is true because all the people have little to no supplies with them to survive. In addition, the route they are taking is near a river and has boats, which makes sense if they are trying to travel away. Based on the evidence, the photo was taken in a rain forest in India and the people are fleeing their countries.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Lillie P I agree with your ideas and analysis. What makes you think that the people are refugees?
Kaitlin B (LCMS)
The people in this picture are walking across a bridge of boats. I know this because they are stepping all over them ao travel across the bit of land. The boats are in shallow water. I can infer this because the plants are so overgrown that you are unable to see it. Additionally, the boats are not rocking back and forth, suggesting that the water is not deep. The people in this picture come from traditionally poor culture. I can infer this because there is a combination of Indian and Muslim people. Based on this evidence, The people in the picture, who come from traditionally poor cultures, are using boats as a bridge in shallow water.
Daniel D (LMCS)
This picture takes place over a lake, pond, or swamp. I know this because there are aquatic plants all over the picture and floating boats, signaling that they must be on the water. This picture takes place in an Islamic country because all of the women in this picture are wearing hijabs on their heads. In order to get across the body of water, the people in this picture are using boats. I know this because the boats are aligned in a line and people are stepping over the boats in two directions. Additionally, no bridge is in sight in this picture. Based on the evidence, this picture shows Islamic people stepping over boats to traverse a body of water such as a lake, pond, or swamp.
Riley S (LCMS)
This picture takes place in India. I know this because women are wearing hijabs. It takes place on a river. I know this because they are using boats to walk over the river with plants on the side that grow in water. The men in the picture are looking at something that caught their attention. I know this because there are men crowded around peering down at something unknown. The boats they are walking on make a bridge. I know this because the boats are connected by rope to make a bridge. In conclusion, the picture takes place in India on a river with people walking on a boat bridge and other surrounded around an unknown object.
Tyler T (LCMS)
This photo was taken in a river. I know this because of all of the fishing boats. In addition, the plants suggest that they are growing out of the water. There might be some sort of event or fishing spot in this river. I know this because all of the boats lined up all going the same way possibly all to the same place. The people in this photo seem to be talking boat to boat, possibly trying to get to a certain place faster. I know this because most of the people seem to be going the same way. Based on this evidence, I can conclude that the people in this photo are going to a certain place and are in a rush to get there.
VTS Moderator (portland, or)
Greetings @Ulilana AOSE - you are also seeing this fleet of boats as a bridge. I am curious about how you see this structure. What do you see that makes you say the boats are "tied to poles in the ground"? Your interpretation of this image included words like "river" "ground" "shallow" "field" - all in one space. What more can we find?
Sam M (LCMS)
It seems most believable based on the given evidence that the people in this picture are using the boats on this grassy river to cross over it without getting wet. One way I can tell this is the people are not sitting in the boats and are rather standing and walking across them. It also seems to be that the boats are all very close together so that they can cross the water. The reason I know its water is because it wouldn’t make much sense to put boats on land rather than just walking across. These are the ways that I can tell that the people in the picture are using these boats as a bridge across a body of water covered in plants.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@L. G. shows us how to think about our own thinking here when they reflect: "it made me think twice to assume that." As we synthesize our prior knowledge with our active observations, we can also broaden our thinking/understanding as we read how others see the picture. I know that your ideas help me reconsider my assumptions and interpretations. Let's keep going. What more can we learn?
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture we see many people walking on a row of boats. Surrounding the boats appears to be many tall plants, with bamboo sticks planted in the ground. I am presuming that this is taking place in India based upon the peoples nationalities and clothing. The boats could be laid down as a way to walk across the tall plants and are tied together. The group of men in the middle seem to looking at something in the plants that is attracting a lot of attention.
Ms. Cutlip (GRA-NE OHIO)
GRA students, please post your comments under mine.
Nick j (Gra)
@Ms. Cutlip I think this is a village of people walking over bridges that were made from boats. They use them because the water is too high and they might not have a lot of materials for a real bridge
Colin CarGuy (GRA)
@Ms. Cutlip I would say that that the boats are connected for transport, like a bridge. I would also say that it looks like it is a warm area and these people in the picture are civilians that are not working. it seems that the boats were not put down by them, but that they are being used by them for transport.
Yifeng (GRA)
@Ms. Cutlip It looks like because of the over growth of a kind of aquatic plant, the road has been blocked, at least the lake has been blocked. SO people had to use boat, to be their road. They connect many boats together to form a bridge to let people go across the river.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
The boats look like they are being used as a bridge through the river. The boats are tied to poles in the ground. The water looks relatively shallow; the boats do not look like they are rocking, so it is easy to walk. The plant life has grown to the point that the water can’t be seen. The people are walking in both directions wearing everyday clothing, so they aren’t working in this field. This is taken in a region where it is warm because many of the men are wearing shorts. The women are wearing something similar to saris; this suggests the photos were taken in India.
L. G. (NYC)
Hello! I see a line of boats, where adults and kids are walking across, in both directions. It does seem like the boats are on water, otherwise it would be difficult to locate those boats on land. If the boats were on land, it would seem that the people would be walking on the land as opposed to the boats. Also, it seems like the boats in the forefront are tied together with some kind of string. Seems like the location is in a warm weather location since they are not wearing coats or outer layers. You would automatically assume they are in a different country than the US because of the women's clothes or their skin color but since the US has plenty of immigrants, it made me think twice to assume that. But after thinking about the line of boats, I do think they are in a different country.
EMILIE (CMS)
judging by how they appear, I believe these people are either indian or muslims. due to how tightly packed together the boats are, they may be walking on them instead of riding inside them. i don't think there's any water, either. where are they going? I'm not sure. with no context, there isn't really a way, for me at least, to make an inference.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @EMILIE, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You are looking the people in the photograph and thinking about broader categories of race, ethnicity, and religion -- keep in mind, someone could be both Indian "and" Muslim. You're also considering the possibility that there may not be water here. What do you see (or not see) that leads you to that interpretation? Thanks!
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade has introduced a new idea for us to consider. They are thinking about these boats organized and structured as a bridge (as some of you have already suggested), but they are wondering...could this be in treetops as opposed to on the ground or water? "We think that it could be treetops because we noticed the ropes that were holding the boats up." What do others think about this? How might this change the way you are understanding this picture?
Ms. Klahr's 3rd Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
In this photo people connected a bunch of boats in India so they can make a passage way to the other side of a river. There are plants that grow in water around the boat. It is day time because the picture is light. The photo is in India because the people are wearing clothes that people from India usually wear.
Speech Group (Brookline, MA)
We see people crossing a possible river on boats. They are using the boats as a bridge. They could be located in a part of Asia. We think this because of the people's clothing; specifically the women's colorful scarves and the little boy's short sleeved shirt and shorts. We think they are crossing because they need to get over the water.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We noticed that the people look like they are crossing a bridge of boats. Some of us think that the boats are in the water or in wetlands and others think that they may be in treetops. We think that they could be in the water because we know that wetlands grow plants like this. We think that it could be treetops because we noticed the ropes that were holding the boats up. We also thought that the ropes could be holding the boats together. We noticed that the people are going in both directions so the bridge must be to get from one place to another. The people are dressed in a way that make us think that this photo was not taken in the US. We also think it is a current photo based on the fact that it is in color and the clothing of the people.

@Grade 3 Rocks wonder "Are they going somewhere special? As I read all your comments, my mind keeps changing ideas about what could be happening here. Are the boats the actual destination as some of the people seem to be interested in the plants? Are they working, site-seeing, taking a leisurely walk, searching, fleeing something dangerous? What do you all think? Let's keep looking closely and share our ideas and wonderings.
Grade 3 Rocks (Texas)
We think these people are walking on boats, so they must be in a place where there is water that is under the boats. We do think that since there are many small boats, the water must be shallow. Maybe these plants are the kind you can eat. We noticed the boats are tied together, so maybe they are tied together so they do not move as easily, and people can use the boats as a walkway or path to get to places. We are unsure of where they might be going. What do you think? We think, that by looking at the bamboo sticks, they might be in Asia. We also wonder why the women are wearing such colorful, bright clothes; they look like they are dressed quite nicely to walk on water. Are they going somewhere special?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @Grade 3 Rocks - thank you for joining the discussion. Besides what we know about how boats work, what do you see in the picture that supports the idea that there may be water under these particular boats?
Grade 3 Rocks (Texas)

EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Grade 3 Rocks I agree with the points that you made in your comment. I had not previously considered how nicely dressed the people walking on the boats are. I think that they are walking on the boats to cross the plants easier.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
The people in this picture are standing on boats. They seem to be trying to navigate their way through some plants. They may be moving somewhere else. They could also be transporting some items to a certain The plants seem to have very large leaves. There must be water underneath the plants in order for the boats to be able to move. This is probably somewhere in the Middle East. It is also taking place during the present because the clothing the people are wearing seems modern. It is also in a warmer climate because the little boy in the front has on shorts and a short sleeve shirt.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @KatieD AOSE, You are noticing and processing this image in a few ways: what the people may be doing, what is this setting specifically and the location more globally, time period, and climate. When you say, "There must be water underneath the plants in order for the boats to be able to move," you're thinking about what you don't see, but also bringing in prior knowledge about the function of boats. What do you see that makes you say these boats here are intended to move?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@VTS Moderator It is possible that the boats are stationary and are just creating a bridge for the people to walk across. However, I see large wooden sticks that they could be using to push the boats along.
Ms. Klahr's 2nd Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
In my opinion, I think these people in the photo are Indians. Indian people are walking on stairs made out of boats in the forest on a lake. The reason that I think they are Indians is because of their skin color and the way they are dressed.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Ms. Klahr's 2nd Period I agree that this could be in India. The women are wearing clothing that looks like saris. Have you considered why they are walking on boats? Do you think this could be a bridge going through a body of water? The plants look like they have overgrown so they created a bridge to make transport easier.

@MB Hello, What do you see that makes you say the destination may be the US?
Meadowlane Magic (Kitchener, Ontario)
We saw people crossing boats and shadows under the plants. We also saw a pillow and something coming out of the pillow. We think that this picture was taken in Africa, India or Pakistan. We also thought they were using the boats as stairs. We wonder where this picture was taken. We also wonder where are they.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Meadowlane Magic I believe that this picture was taken in India. I think this because the two women at the bottom are wearing saris, which is customarily Indian formal clothing.

Where on our planet could this be taking place? I've read a range of ideas including: Cuba -@Brynn Asia - @Sophia AOSE Egypt - @Sophia Mochrik India - @Tanzeela R "Maybe it is in Africa, maybe it's in the Amazons." - @La Salle What can we know just by looking closer? Many of you are considering the climate, the clothes, the plants, the people, and the action as you try and and place this into a geographic context. Let's keep looking and see if we find more details to support perhaps the ideas shared above or perhaps come up with new ones.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Ms. Klahr's 1st Period is wondering about the setting. Their idea is that it could be a river. As others have pointed out, we don't see actual water...so what details help support the idea that this may specifically be a river?
Miss Strong's class- 3rd grade (Cincinnati, Ohio)
We think the boats were created to be used as stairs. We believe the people are in South Asia area or somewhere around those lines. We believe this because the women are wearing scarves with bright patterns. The group of men in the middle of the picture are definitely looking at something (maybe dangerous) - Maybe that is why people are walking in different directions...
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello @Miss Strong's class- 3rd grade! What do you see that makes you say that the thing the men are looking at could be dangerous? Thank you.
ELA (MA)
Our thoughts: -Trying to find missing kids and it takes place in China. -Dead body search in Japan. -I see boats and I see people walking over them. -This is in India because of what they are wearing. I see crops and a garden. The people are looking for food. -This takes place in New Delhi, India. People are walking down the boats and picking flowers.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@ELA Wow - that is quite a range of ideas all from from observing the same picture! Thank you so much for sharing. I would love to learn more -- what do you see in the picture to support these different interpretations?
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Like may of you, @Annelisse is considering where geographically this could be taking place and the type of action that may be happening. One of her ideas is that the boats could be functioning as a walkway or a bridge. In this way, where could they be going?
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, there are a bunch of people standing on boats and seem to be walking across these boats. Since there is no road underneath the boats, this picture is taking place on a body of water. Judging based on the people, I believe this picture is taking place in a foreign country with very hot weather, possibly Cuba or other like. The woman shown have scarves wrapped around their heads also leaving me to believe that this is Cuba because of the religion aspect. There is only one child shown in the picture, a little boy, and he is leading his parents to what I would guess to be land. On either side of the boats, there is many plants growing rapidly. This climate must be suitable for the plants to grow. In the center, there are multiple men who appear to be stopped and looking at something, possibly a dangerous animal, like a aligator.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think that this picture was taken of people is South Asia traveling to certain destinations by building a bridge made out of boats. I can tell that these people are all going their separate ways because the people are all walking in different directions. Additionally, the people must be from some foreign country like South Asia because of the clothing, the fact that the people were all traveling in a unique way, and the bamboo. Lastly, I assume that this picture represents the extremities people face to reach destinations, in contrast to how people in America travel.
Ms. Klahr's 1st Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
i think there is a small river that is serounded by leaves and plants. and the river is filled with little boats. also there are people walking along the boats, probobly so they don't have to swim or something like that. i also think the people are hijab or arabian because of there clothing and prefrences.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
This looks like a group of people trying to get somewhere. They are walking on a path of boats, so maybe they are in a swampland or the green plants in the photo are maybe toxic to touch. There are also poles in the photo which seem to be made out of bamboo. This leads me to believe this photo was taken in Asia, a place where bamboo is commonly found. The women in the photo are wearing head scarves which is another indicator they are from Asia. They could be maybe from a third world country since some of the people aren't wearing shoes and their clothing looks a little run down.

Good morning/afternoon/evening --- depending on which time zone you are in ---I noticed we have students/classes writing in from Spain, Iceland, and the US!! It is great to see so many observations already. It is equally energizing to see so many questions in this conversation such as: "We wonder if there are any animal there....We wonder if these boats are even theirs, or did they find them this way?" - @Mrs. Alexander's 2nd GR. "We wonder where are they going and we’re do this ends?" -@Varmahlíðarskóli Let's keep going -- what more can we find?
Annelisse (AOSE)
This picture looks like it takes place in an Asian country. I assume this because of the traditional clothing and the people. This looks like maybe a walkway, although the things they are walking on look more like boats. Since there is nothing much around them besides the green plants, they may be going to go gardening. They could also be possibly crossing a border since this may not be a traditional way of getting somewhere. The land they are on is possibly something something like a swamp, so the plants around them are just covering the water. The boats could be there as their only way to cross, sort of a bridge, over the water. This picture looks fairly recent based off of the high definition quality.
Sophia Mochrik (Massachusetts)
It looks like these people are going through a canal or stream, brook, river, perhaps for a routine checkup, or maybe they are just looking to get through this canal. These people look as if to come from a hotter place in the world, perhaps from the Middle East or Africa. I'm leaning towards the idea of the Middle East, due to the woman wearing hijabs, however I can't shake the feeling that this may be a smaller 'river' that breaks off from the Nile River itself, So maybe it is somewhere in Egypt, where many people are Muslim (That would explain the hijab), and somewhere along the Nile (Where most of the population lies) Or perhaps this is somewhere in India, I have thought about that actually, but many of the rivers in India are VERY polluted and there is little clean water there that would provide goo for this type of greenery and plant growth. I don't even think the Cauvery River (An Indian river) would provide to plant such lush plants/crops sown in the picture. So, getting back to the Routine checkup Idea, I think that the people in the picture may taking or 'curing'/'purifying' (As in cleaning) the plants, I don't see any bags or 'cleaning' items in the boats though, just strings and bags, so they might be collecting the crops, though it would be a small quantity compared to how many people are there. So maybe they are collecting, as opposed to cleaning. Though I still think that they are checking up on the plants.
Mrs. Alexander's 2nd GR (Midlothian, TX)
We see people that are walking on boats. The boats are surrounded by bright green leaves. We don't know if there is water under the boats or if the are using them to walk on because the green plant is dangerous. We see bamboo coming out of the green plants. We see that the women are wearing a certain kind of head wrap. There are a mixture of ages. The little boy looks like he is leading the way. We notice that the group of people in the middle are all looking at something. We wonder if there are any animal there. We wonder where they are going. We wonder what the temperature is. We wonder if these boats are even theirs, or did they find them this way?
Anaya C. (LCMS)
In this picture, there are many people walking on what looks like boats. They are surrounded by a bunch of tall plants. I know this because the tall green plants are all over the picture. These people look like they’re foreign or from a different country. I believe this because the women have hijabs over their heads. All of these people might be trying to get somewhere, but in order to get their they have to walk on these boats to get across.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Anaya C. I agree that these people are trying to get somewhere, where do you think they are going?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Anaya C. I also noticed how there are very tall plants surrounding them. Do you think there is water underneath the plants which is why the boats are able to be there? Or do you think they put the boats there to walk through the plants?
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Anaya C. I completely agree with your idea. These people in a foreign country are using creative tactics to overcome obstacles to reach destinations.
Milan R. (LCMS)
To begin, I see a group of people walking across the array of boats. From this, I can conclude that they may be crossing a river or swampy area. Furthermore, the area they are located in has a lot of greenery and plants, from this I can conclude that they are in a swampy area. Lastly, the mass of people mainly appears to be Indian, therefore I believe this place is located in India. In conclusion, I believe this is a sort of nature sight in India.
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Milan R. never thought that this could be a nature sight, good thinking!
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Brynn Thank you for your response!

February 24, 2020- This image is taken in South Asia. I think this because of the clothing and shawls on their heads. Additionally, I think there is something going on that cannot be seen in this picture. I think this because there is a group of men looking at something in the distance. The people are walking through a marsh and are trying to get to another area. I know this because they are using boats as bridges to travel and there are pieces of wood securing the bridge. That is why I think that the picture is set in South Asia, and they are traveling somewhere using boats like bridges.
Maddie M (LCMS)
The people in this photo used this path of boats to walk across a body of water. I know this because they have all the boats closed and in a line/pattern so they could walk across them. This is a tourist attraction. I know this because they are all admiring the plants, also the plants look beautiful and green. In addition, the path of boats leads to two different locations. I know this because all some people are going up while some people are walking down the path. In conclusion, these people are here to see this attraction of the beautiful plants and they are using these boats to stand on the body of water to get to different locations.
Gabrielle C (LCMS)
This is a picture of a group of people getting ready to go on a trip in boats. I know this because the people are walking on the boats to check that all of the boats are ready to take out of the area. Additionally, this is in a foreign country. I know this because the people are dressed in clothing that is from outside of the United States. Also, they are in a small lake. I know this because they are surrounded by plants, but the boats are on water. In conclusion, in this picture, it is a group of people from a foreign country getting ready to travel by boats.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Gabrielle C The boats could have been used to make a bridge. The people are walking in both directions and do not have any items with them that would suggest they are going to use the boats for a trip. The boats could make there traveling to and from cities or towns easier. The overgrowth of the plants would make it difficult to walk through this area.
Brighid S (LCMS)
In this picture, there’s people from a foriegn country on boats. I know they’re from a foreign country because of their attire which is not worn by everyone in America. Also, in this picture many people are using these many little boats as a bridge. I know this because you can see the different people facing and moving different ways on the boats throughout the whole picture. Lastly, this picture was taken during present time. I know this because of the good camera quality/clearity, how vivid the colors show up in the picture, and the modern style of the peoples clothes. In conclusion, this picture was taken in present day in a forgeign country of people using boats as a bridge.
Courtney F (LCMS)
This picture is taken in a foreign country. I know this because all of the people in the picture look to be Indian. The women are also are wearing a different style of clothing. They wear long dresses and things around there face, which isn’t American style. I think the people in the picture are farming on water. I know this because there are people on boats, making you know they are on water. I know they are farming there is a lot of plant life around them. There are also people looking at the plant almost as to make sure it is healthy. This picture was taken in the twenty-first century. I know this because the picture is in color and they have modern-looking clothes.
Bryce d (LCMS)
The setting of this picture is in or near India. I know this because the people appear to be India. I also know that the people are crossing a river or some sort of body of water. I know this because there are several small boats that are connected to form a bridge. It is in the spring or summer. I know this because the boy in the front is in shorts and a t-shirt. In conclusion, there are people in India crossing a river in warm weather.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Bryce d I also think that this photo is taking place somewhere in the Middle East. I also think that they are navigating through water because they are in boats. I agree that it is taking place in a warmer climate.
KaileeC (LCMS)
In this picture people are crossing an overgrown river by walking on boats that are tied to each other. I know this because people are walking both ways. The body of water they are walking over is a swamp. I know this because it is very overgrown and the plants grown in the water are like the ones grown in swamps. This “Bridge” is in or near India. I know this because of the clothes the people are wearing and what they look like. In conclusion, there are people in India crossing over a swamp on a make shift bridge made of boats.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@KaileeC I like your interpretation on this picture. I originally thought that this picture could be taken in South Asia, but now I can consider India. Additionally, I agree with your idea about the purpose of the picture, and that the people are crossing a river, using creative ways.
Keyri P (LCMS)
The people in the picture are using boats to get across. I know this because in the picture it doesn’t show that there is water resource and the people on the bat are standing and usually if you are in a boat you are sitting down and paddling in the river. The people in the picture are Indian, based on this statement the women are wearing a headscarf named a turban to protect their hair for a religion to promote a religious observance. The men in the middle left have observed something interesting, their body language and their facial expressions show that they are fascinated by something they saw from afar. In conclusion, the people in the picture are Indian and their attention is on something that is not shown in the picture.
Ava P (LCMS)
In this picture, there is an event going on. I know this because there are people walking on boats. This is very unusual, leading me to believe that it is a ceremony or event. Along with this, the people in the picture look of Indian descent. I know this because the people seem to be wearing clothes of that culture. Lastly, some of the people in the picture are wearing turbans. I know this because in the front of the picture there are women with what seems like turbans on their heads. Based on the evidence, there are people of Indian descent wearing turbans and participating in a cultural event.
Allie M. (LCMS)
They are using the boats as a bridge. I know this because the little boy has one foot in one boat and the other somewhat over another one. In addition, the people in the backare walking on the boats. This takes place in Saudi Arabia. I know this because the women in the picture are wearing hijabs. This is an overgrown lake. I know this because where the boats look like an overgrown lake. Based on this evidence, this pictures takes place on an overgrown lake with a boat bridge in Saudi Arabia.
Kayla V. (LCMS)
In this picture, there is a huge garden with lots of plants. I know this because there are a bunch of green plants growing around the people. I think the people are either being forced to or being paid to harvest the plants. Next, I know that the plants are growing above water because the people are on boats. Lastly, I know that this takes place in a foreign country, I know this because the people’s skin color and clothes tell me that. Also, the women are wearing hijabs and the kids are working. In conclusion, this picture shows people in a foreign country working to grow/harvest plants.
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Color Photography class Looks like a walkway through water covered with some plant. Possibly in India or Pakistan. They are using boats to cross.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Photo class Villa Maria College why do you think that they feel the need to all be lined up like they are?
Marco Martinez Honor Physics (Brooks School)
What is going on in this picture is a group of people are trying to get somewhere, but in order to get there, they must go through a path of boats. A reason they might be walking on these boats is that maybe the plants are dangerous and can hurt the human body by the touch of it. I believe this because I don't see anyone walking over the plant and also there is an abundance of that plant.
Annelisse (AOSE)
@Marco Martinez Honor Physics I never thought about the plants being dangerous, but that would make a lot of sense. They might be able to walk though the plants, but they wouldn't be able to do so without getting a rash or illness or some sort. That would explain the boats.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Marco Martinez Honor Physics I agree with you. The people also could be walking on the boats because the ground might be swampy or they could be on a shallow body of water.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Marco Martinez Honor Physics Why do you think they are using boats as walkways if they could use another pathway to prevent them from touching the plants?
Sam- HPhysics (Brooksschool)
It is a picture of people crossing the tall plants by placing boats and creating a route to go through. The boats have flat surfaces and the people look like they are walking a certain direction. The poles are made of bamboo. It is interesting that used boats instead of getting rid of the plants. From what the girls are wearing, it could be assumed they are from somewhere in Asia.
Annelisse (AOSE)
@Sam- HPhysics You're right, it is definitely interesting that they are using bamboo and boats as a way of travel. Well, boats are used as a way of travel, but never just to walk on. I've never seen something like this in any other part of the world, but I've noticed that Asian countries often use bamboo the most.
Nathan McCabe HPhysics (Brooks School)
It appears like there are people walking on a path made of boats. It looks like this Image is from Indonesia or somewhere similar in that part of the world. They could be traveling or farming because there’s plants all around. Because of the boats, it makes me thing they could be on a shallow body of water.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Nathan McCabe HPhysics what about the boats makes you think that the water is shallow? That’s a very interesting thought!
Nathan McCabe HPhysics (Brooks School)
@Emma AOSE I thought this because of how many of them were connected and the plants. The plants make me think of a swamp-like body of water. Turns out I was wrong and the water is actually deep. Interesting.
Evan (North Andover, MA)
I Notice that in the photo, there are people walking across a path of rowboats. they don't have fishing or farming equipment and they are of all different ages. the bottoms of the boats are also all boarded up and the people for going in different directions. because of this, I feel like these people are using an unusual form of bridges to cross a body of water. the clothing and bamboo poles make me think this is in Asia or India.
Tabor Wilson Hphysiscs (MA)
I think that this picture is showing people using a bunch of boats to cross a bridge. they might be doing this because they have no other way to get across.
La Salle Sagrado Corazón 2 ESO B (Madrid, Spain)
Hello! We think that it is a river with a bridge made of boats. We think it could be in India because of the clothes and the people. Maybe it is in Africa, maybe it's in the Amazons. We know it is in a forest. It is Spring. Maybe they're in a tiny village and they are going to collect resources. Also, maybe they are working. They probably don't have a lot of money. This is our opinion!
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@La Salle Sagrado Corazón 2 ESO B I think this photo was taken in Asia. There are bamboo poles in the photo, and bamboo is very commonly found in Asia. Do you agree?
PrestonHonorsPhysics (Brooks School)
The people appear to be traveling through a path that is between the two large areas of plants. There are a lot of rowboats that are lined up that lead me to believe that is some type of path or stairway because the people appear to be moving up and down. The rowboats are also flat so it makes sense. I think it is somewhere like Indonesia because some of the people are not wearing shoes or shirts and there is some bamboo in the background.
Bernard L (New Jersey)
I think that a man has fallen into an algae-covered river. Even though some people are wearing business clothes, meaning that they could be commuting and that there is a kid on the bridge, meaning that the bridge is used for several purposes, the bridge seems crowded, meaning that it is easy to fall. Near the back of the bridge, a man is crouching with his body partially off the bridge with a crowd watching, so a man could have possibly fallen into the river.
Addie Branca H Physics (Brooks School)
In this picture there are people walking across boats that are panelled to have a flat surface. Surrounding the boats is a lot of vegetation. There are sticks coming out from the vegetation that seem to provide some sort of support system to the boats. I think that these people are using the boats as a bridge to cross this vegetation. The fact that they are using boats makes me think that made there is some sort of water under all of the plants. Sort of like a bog. But not too much water because the sticks are still able to come far above the surface.
ELA (MA)
We have a few ideas about what is going on in this picture: -I see boats and people and people walking with the boats, but there is no water. It is an educational nature trail walk in India. -A nature walk in a farm area on India.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
There look to be a chain of boats that are all connecting with some kind of rope to form a kind of walkway for people. The people in the picture are Indian so the picture was taken somewhere in South Asia. There are women and children going along the pathway of boats so this says that the boats aren't for any work purposes. This walkway was probably built for people to walk across a lake or swamp area. There are also stone tiles in each boat for people to walk on without much trouble.
Eliza (Brooks School)
Because of the boats and plants in this picture, I think that there is a farming community photographed here. The plants are being grown in water since the people are walking on boats instead of on the ground.
James Wodarski HPhysics (Brooks School)
This picture was taken while people were crossing a man made bridge. The people in this picture are in an environment that is only plants, and they build the bridge because either the plants are dangerous or they don’t want to step in mud. They seem to be in a warmer region of the world because of their clothes and how the men have shortsleeved shirts. They could be farming.
Shalini HPhysics (Brooks School)
This is a picture of some people traveling through a marsh. There seems to be an opening between the plants that boats have been placed on. The people are walking through the marsh on these boats. They might be harvesting the plants that are growing. There are poles that look like they’re holding the boats in place. This might take place around Asia.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Shalini HPhysics Why do you think that they are harvesting the plants that are growing?
Ginger (H Physics Brooks School)
In this picture, it appears that the people are farming. Groups of people are standing on rowboats surrounded by leaves and plants, that the people are tending to.
Natalie H Honors Physics (Brooks School)
This image is showing people harvesting and doing their agricultural work. They are on boats which help them get to the different plants they need.

Hello! We think that this is happening in India, or Thailand, or China, or the Amazons, or Japan. It is summer because there is a lot of sun and water. It could be a tribe or village. It could be tourists or immigrants. There is a lot of water and they can't cross the river. It could be a park of Sequoias and they put boats to go across. They might be crossing the border. Bye!

We think it is water plants 🌱 and we think the people have build a bridge with boats and sticks We think this is in India 🇮🇳 because of the clothes and the people. We wonder where are they going and we’re do this ends? We think the photo is taken with a drone
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think that these people are doing work in a lake or other body of water that has a lot of plantlife to the point that you can't even see the water anymore. I think there's water because they're on boats and if there was no water, why else would there even be boats. They seem to be doing some kind of job, maybe just trying to move the plants out of the way for people to get to the doc
