It is sad that you can always count on some posters on this site to blame America first, regardless of how suspect their “evidence “ is.

Criminal negligence by Iranian authorities . They should have closed the airport and prevented any take off or landing especially when they were firing missiles in war like situation and expecting high possibility of air strike retaliation by US. Iranian authorities in high positions now want to deflect the blame to the Iranian soldiers who fired the missiles. It seems Iranian authorities in their pursuit of idea of martyrdom have no value to human life.

Other news sites are raising questions about 'interference' with the ground to air missile system: 1) Heavy jamming was reported by the system operators 2) The airliner crew refused a safety inspection by Iranian authorities before the flight took off. a) after take off the airliner transponder and all other communications with the airliner shut down. lack of a transponder signal would cause the missile system to identify the airliner as a possible hostile 3) Information has already been published - with claims made by multiple nations - that the Russian missile systems in use by Syria and Iran could be hacked and target identifications changed so hostile aircraft would appear as friendly. If this could be done, one presumes that ID's could be changed so that friendly aircraft could be identified as hostile. 4) Iran admitted that their missiles shot down the airliner - the evidence made this clear. BUT as noted, these systems can be 'spoofed' to misidentify targets.

Your lack of supporting citations for these claims—especially 2—from respectable sources indicates you are helping Iran’s coverup.

Social media is buzzing with discussion of the downed Iranian plane. The videographer of the 19-second clip showing a missile striking Flight PS752 shortly after take-off from Tehran’s airport at around 6.15 am, remains silent during the filming while smoking a cigarette (the smoke briefly wafts over the screen), is standing in the suburb of Parand looking northwest. His location was verified by the NY Times using satellite data. Many are asking: why was this “videographer” standing in a derelict industrial area outside Tehran at around six am with a mobile phone camera training on a fixed angle to the darkened sky? The airliner is barely visible, yet the sky-watching person has the camera pointed and ready to film a most dramatic event, seconds before it happened. That strongly suggests, foreknowledge. With US electronic warfare technology it is feasible for enemy military radars to be “spoofed” by phantom objects. One such EW developed by the Pentagon is Miniature Air-Launched Decoy (MALD) can create deceptive signals on enemy radar systems of incoming warheads. Truth is the first casualty of war, as the recently published Afghanistan Papers reveal. Generally, the perpetrator is the one who benefits.

@Lucy Cooke 'Many are asking'? A rhetorical trick used sometimes to act like the question implies the answer. How about just answering it - since the answer is simple. He was out smoking and heard the first missile take off - started filming and got the second. It's not hard. We assassinated their general. They fired missiles at our military base. It is not surprising that the population living there was on edge and watching the sky for missiles - incoming or outgoing.

@Lucy Cooke The timing of the downed flight, the heavily Iranian roster and the end result all were very beneficial to enemies of the Iranian government. The Iranian roster spurred demonstrations by the Iranian public against the government (though it is also possible that outside forces encouraged these demonstrations - not a first). The downing of this flight IMMEDIATELY changed the focus in the region away from Suleimani's killing by the US to the deaths of innocent people on an airliner. At least it wasn't a Malaysian airliner this time....

IF the Trump-Pence gang had a milligram of brain power amongst them, they'd use the Iranian request as an opening to resolve differences. Supplying needed equipment along with a few American technicians that Tehran finds acceptable, would demonstrate civility from both nations.
Jim (Idaho)
@Jim It's far, far easier for Iran to send the boxes to a country that has the lab, equipment and technicians to examine them rather than send all of that to Iran. If Iran does not trust the US, then let the Ukrainians send them to France.
DSM14 (Westfield NJ)
Why would an American technician agree to go to Iran, which has a history of holding Americans hostage and of covering up this tragedy?

My family members are airline employees. Do you have any idea feeling the impact of what Donald Trump is responsible for here? That at a political whim, somewhere, sometime, my family members might be blown up because that narcissist Donald Trump makes an order to make himself look “great” and “strong” and “protective” for reasons he says he does not even have to explain. The fury and sorrow of the relatives and loved ones of those who unnecessarily perished, is shared and understood. And it is certainly taken to heart. Donald Trump does not have a clue what he’s doing and he does not care. Lives, other than his family members, mean nothing to him.

Now that Iran is in retaliatory mode, any country would be foolish to provide them with equipment which will be impounded.Any officials who accompany the equipment should also be afraid for their safety. The Ukrainian Jet which took off that fateful day was the tenth plane to leave the airport. Why did they target an Ukrainian plane-who was so cruel to target a plane filled with civilians, many of them Iranians?
JB (NJ)
Same regime that took down 1500-1600 of its own people because they were protesting. Launching missiles at a passenger plane seems like something in their playbook for sure. Then refusing to hand over the "black boxes" that's a clear indicator for "we got something to hide" Tune into USA (Unapologetic-ally Speaking for America) podcast streaming every Saturday.
Chris Kipfer (Steamboat Springs,CO)
@JB When our Aegis missile cruiser accidentally shot down an Iranair civilian airliner killing 298 civilians in a similar incident in the 90s did it generate as many conspiracy theories? We did help recover the bodies floating in the Persion Gulf. Using quasi war as a foreign policy to appear tough causes the loss of innocent lives to no significant beneficial effect except, perhaps,a President's reelection.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Iranian geniuses, the black boxes belong to the Ukrainians. They're not yours. Return them.
Newsbuoy (Newsbuoy Sector 12)
It's understandable that Iran wants to control the chain of possession in an age of Generative Adversarial Networks. While the technology to manipulate aircraft remotely is available and probably deployed in orbit, this might be just another screw-up by the "third-shift". Any reader who has worked the "lobster" shift knows those witching hours are when many if not most major disasters have occurred. Chernobyl for example, and Three Mile Island... For politicians however, not disaster should go by without an advantage taken. Hey! has Mexico deployed those SS-20's yet?
Roger G. (New York, NY)
This just in. The Iranians claim that the plane was already falling before the missiles were launched. The missiles just made the plane fall faster.
Low Notes Liberate (Brooklyn)
Iran fired those missiles with the intent to bring down a passenger jet full of innocent people. There is no question that it was fully intensional. In no way would trained military mistake that jet for anything other than a passenger jet. They would have heard the radio interactions between the tower and the jet. They would have calculated the rate of ascent and speed, all completely in accord with a passenger jet. The nonsense that has followed is deplorable. Everyone can easily see it was intentional and Iran knows that it is clear to see as well. It was an opportunity to kill in an environment of chaos and they took it. This was not a mistake and the people who died on that plane deserve the official record to reflect that obvious conclusion. Iran murdered these people to make a point.
bobbrum (Bradenton, FL)
@Low Notes Liberate More than intentional. Iran targeted a plane that thought was a USA plane flying American diplomats out of the country.
Théo (Montreal)
Why would they kill their own people? What was the point they were trying to make?
SusanStoHelit (California)
@bobbrum I'd not heard that suggestion before. An interesting theory that makes some sense. We have accidentally shot down a passenger plane before - as have others. It's not nonsense to suggest that the military can make a mistake.
Matthew O'Brien (San Jose, CA)
All airlines should cancel all flights into or out of Iran.
DMH (nc)
I seem to recall that when missiles are fired at a target, they're usually fired in pairs, in case one misses or doesn't explode. Anything different from the Iranians would be the abnormality.
GregP (27405)
@DMH They were fired 30 seconds apart. That means they weren't fired in pairs.
otto (rust belt)
Why in the Sam Hill do we need the black box? We say they did it. They admit they did it, and we have video of it happening.
Follow Up (Connecticut)
@otto Because they want to say the pilot wandered out of the flight path and therefore it was justified that they shot them down.
SusanStoHelit (California)
@otto Yeah, not sure what the questions are there. Unless there was some radio chatter or a disabled transponder, there are no mysteries here.
SN (Philadelphia)
So Iran admits it made a mistake when presented with overwhelming evidence? Hmm.
D.j.j.k. (south Delaware)
Our profoundly immoral Trump even owns the downing of the jetliner. He needs to be charged for war crimes. Our allies and President Obama were happy with the peace plan. Lock him up with new charges for the good of the country.
katesisco (usa)
We've known this for a week, almost from the event.

"Iranian investigators had established that two Tor-M1 missiles had been fired at the plane, the statement said, adding that the investigation was looking into their effect on the crash." France and USA should not cooperate. Iran probably is only seeking to increase the lethality of the missiles.
