Lawsuit Claims Epstein Trafficked Girls in Caribbean Until 2018

The NYT might consider doing an update on the research into why men are sexually attracted to children, how to identify this earlier in male development, and how to treat or manage it. It would also be interesting to know from the researchers the extent to which social context plays a supporting role -- eg. the use of prepubescent fashion models etc. Otherwise it's Epstein today and someone else next week and on and on.
JCAZ (Arizona)
And what happened to the list of men who slept with these underage girls? What is the status of the investigation into Epstein’s enablers?
TM (Miami)
Epstein is dead, but this case is not. Who are the "ring of associates" that enabled him? This did not happen with one man and a telephone. He had help. Lots of it. People willing to sell children, people willing to entrap girls for favors and money. They are also guilty. Even other victims of his that ended up becoming traffickers themselves, who are yes, guilty as well. This case is far from over. Start with Ghislaine Maxwell.
Oh My (Upstate, New York)
@TM She must be protected somehow, because she know it all. I still feel Barr is helping covering up all the scandal.
NYC Mom (New York)
Can we please stop calling him a financier? He’s a human trafficker who blackmailed rich men with his knowledge of their pedophilia for money.
Father of One (Oakland)
Yes, he was a con man who narrowly escaped going to prison for helping set up a Ponzi Scheme (Tower Financial) and then found a way to squeeze tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars out of a gullible retail billionaire (Les Wexner). He likely then took the money he made from these two projects and invested it in some index funds. Not really a "financier."
Guido Malsh (Cincinnati)
We all know how high and how wide this pesky trail of perversion goes and spreads. We all know how and whom it protects. We must demand to know why.
Alpha (Islamabad)
No matter how abhorrent he was but law must be supreme. He should not be thrown to the wayside. How he died in the custody of the law need to be investigated by independent panel of investigators. After watching CBS 60 minutes it does not take an expert to realize that he was murdered.
Truthbeknown (Texas)
What has happened to his female associate?
Dave (DC)
What about all of the parents of these young girls? When will they be held accountable? Were they pimping their own daughters out? How could they not know?
kathy (new york city)
Why is Ghislaine Maxwell roaming about the world free? What is the rationale for this? She was an enabling accomplice to Epstein. She has not even been taken in for questioning. Why?
Cooper Chance (Washington DC)
Really too bad he was murdered. But, he had the goods on one too many people in power who trumped him.
cynicalskeptic (Greater NY)
Anyone remember the Franklin Scandal? oh right.... nothing credible there......

Yes people! — get out all of your real frustration & anger so you can get back to living your virtual life paths which have been predetermined for you! Does that sound like a flat-earther statement to you? Well, consider this: 1) Epstein was given a light sentence & a radio controlled ankle bracelet keeping him in a rich villa on an island he built, for purposes he built it for; what could possibly go wrong?! During that time the bottom-dweller sexual predators around the country remained in jail & served their time without any special privileges. No wonder people take knees at the beginning of nationally televised football games! The blatant double standard! It gets even worse... 2) Young people are upping their meds due to a panic set in because of the daily reported wave of climate-change doom coming our way. It’s so bad that even Greta’s father & associates have had to write comments under her name & social media account, skipping the notation that they did it. But who are those people? They always hang out in the background, apparently with strings attached. I don’t see a report on this from the New York Times — guess it wasn’t fit to print. The ends justifies the means, right? This kind of stuff has been going on a very long time... 3) During the investigation after the assassination of President Kennedy there was a strong control over the collection and dissemination of evidence, just like what happened after 9/11 — no tests on steel, which had U.S. blood on it.
middle american (ohio)
so what was law enforcement of the Virgin islands doing while he was still alive?
Anonymous (USA)
Donald & Jeffrey were friends. Donald was introduced to Melania at the Kit Kat Club by Ghislaine. Ghislaine scouted girls for Jeffrey, as well as their friends (of higher ranks) who also had fetishes for young girls, especially aspiring models. ‘Believe Giuliani spoke to Donald about Jeffrey, asking how much trouble he could cause, hence the “supposed” suicide. The last part is only a guess, but can say there’s no way Donald would have allowed Jeffrey to “go on” knowing all that he knows? Ghislaine has all of the info & definitely believe Donald is helping her stay on the down low...along w/ many other powerful men who have everything to hide. Hearing the full story, was shocked by the double life led!? Ghislaine carried a lg camera & took blk & white photos, basically documented “their friend’s” visits. The treasure trove is w/ her. She is “sick”, there’s nothing innocent about her. Her upbringing & dynamics w/ her father was sick, qualified by the fact he died off the yacht named “The Ghislaine” (yet...there was her mother & many other brothers & sisters?) She was in a power struggle w/ her father, trying to prove she could make it w/out him as he tried to “own her”, which she defied. Love-hate-ego. Jeffrey & Ghislaine were friends w/ Andrew & Sarah F at one time. SO many Johns needs to be brought to justice, especially Ghislaine...NO ONE else could stay hidden like this? There’s obviously SO MUCH MORE behind the scenes...and pure Evil. (This will be my only comment)
anniegt (Massachusetts)
It's really quite amazing how Jeffrey Epstein ran this pedophilia ring all by himself, with no help from anyone. Paging Ronan Farrow? This is a dung heap that needs to be excavated!
ART (Athens, GA)
Men who force women into sex are inept cowards. Sexual harassment is not about sex, it is about power and control. The women who support these disgusting men incapable of seducing women with charm, are cowardly and inept as well. I would not be surprised if he killed himself since he was a big time coward afraid of facing the attacks on him. Those who are greedy are cowards as well in their fear of poverty.
WE (DC)
Everyday, we are bombarded by stories of rich, powerful white men giving us the middle finger. trump, barr, mcconnell, Pompeo, mnuchin, graham, kraft. They don’t even try to hide their corruption anymore. As mulvaney said “deal with it”. How can we make this stop? Maybe here? With release of the names?
Stephen (Schmidt)
This seems like an exercise in how many times the nyt can say he killed himself.
full disclosure (Seattle)
My son worked on St. Thomas. He said that Jeffrey Epstein's island was widely know as "Predator Island" by all the locals. People who were involved need to be tried in court and sent to jail if crimes were committed.
Melanie (Florida)
I certainly hope that Alex Acosta is personally held responsible for the last 10 years of abuse that his intervention, on behalf of Epstein in Florida, allowed to continue. He is as complicit as those who actively participated in these crimes.
Father of One (Oakland)
"Mr. Epstein, a wealthy financier who died by suicide in a Manhattan jail last year." You mean, "allegedly died by suicide." There is enough doubt surrounding Epstein's cause of death that to suggest otherwise is irresponsible.
MC (NJ)
Why is Ghislanie Maxwell not in jail? Why are Epstein friends Prince Andrew, Alan Dershowitz, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Woody Allen, and many others not being held accountable?
TDHawkes (Eugene, Oregon)
@MC That is why Mr. Epstein is dead. Dead men tell no tales.
WE (DC)
@MC Answer: Bill Barr. His father, who wrote sci-fi trash featuring pedophelia, was the one who first hired Epstein to work at Dalton School. He should have recused himself from every Epstein case, but, well, everyday we learn more about Barr operates. No one is above the law!
DLF (PDX)
“As part of its policies, the government of the Virgin Islands could take any assets recovered from Mr. Epstein’s estate and CONSIDER disbursing them to women and girls who were victimized by him in the region, Ms. George said.” (Emphasis mine.) If the VI is going to take estate assets, why don’t they GUARANTEE that they will be disbursed to the women and girls who were victimized? One hundred percent, no skimming off the top for the costs of going after the funds.
czarnajama (Warsaw)
@DLF One can be sure that all these legal actions are under contingency, meaning the lawyers will get 30-40% of the proceeds.
Brian (Los Angeles)
Did Trump make any trips to Epstein's island during that time period?
Gil Colgate (California)
It is possible Epstein introduced Trump to Melania. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/jeffrey-epstein-trumps-introduce/

This is one reason why I’m glad I’m not filthy rich. The people the rich socialize with.
Jason (Virginia)
Rich folks will eventually be held accountable as the norm only once the oligarchs have succeeded at eliminating the middle class altogether. At that point the destitute serf majority will rise up and secure justice not through the system, but by destroying the old one and starting again. Sadly, it will then fall again and again when the newly created revolutionaries-turned-rich-guys enact their own brand of corruption supported by whatever rich guys next take over US hegemony. Sadly this is the cycle of instability faced by the rest of the world already and it’s coming soon to the US now as well courtesy of Republican Party politics and the corrupt citizens united decision that lets them buy everything. We are being destroyed by the party of rich guys who convince poor folks to support making them richer with incredible sums of money used to ubiquitously advertise false claims of ever-dwindling opportunity, lip service to religious extremism and white supremacy, and support for wild-west-identity cultural ideas about the utility and necessity of firearms. That they buy talking head mouthpieces to run for office sho gerrymander elections and further disenfranchise their opposition is easy when you can buy your way out of accountability. It’s the modern corporate maximize profits version of feeding Jim Crow to the cultural decedents of lost cause ideology.
cynicalskeptic (Greater NY)
@Jason There's a reason for our militarized police and surveillance state and it's not to protect us from 'terrorists'. In centuries past even the most oppressed would rise up against their rulers. Slaves revolted in Rome. The world is full of examples. But most revolutions fail. Even in our own heavily armed nation, the populace does not stand a chance against the forces our own government can muster. Look at the reaction to the 'Occupy' movement. They were a disorganized, non-violent group protesting the financial system bail outs. All they said was 'This is wrong, it needs to change'. They were crushed by a supposedly 'progressive' President as if they were some great threat to our nation. Huxley's Brave New World is well on its way (with Orwell's 1984 as a back-up). People are being conditioned to embrace their servitude.
cheryl (yorktown)
@Jason I am terribly frightened that you are correct. Epstein's unlimited access to young women might be an anomaly, but his ability to operate safely within the wealthiest echelons of society bespeaks a system of power where wealth is venerated, and the "rights" of those without power are illusory, even in the US
SQUEE (OKC OK)
He wasn't alone in this; likely many others need to be prosecuted.
loveman0 (sf)
Since we haven't heard from "the three Federal investigations" about his death, we can assume they are intended as cover-ups for not identifying Epstein's co-conspirators, which might include the President of the U.S. as well as one of his attorneys.

I don't know about others but that mugshot is like a nightmare, which jumps at you, from multiple internets news sites... I am disgusted and almost afraid of encountering that visage again and again. What does it matter now, to be honest... he should have been made to pay his dues by life-in-solitary confinement for the rest of his remaining (non-suicidal) life. That would have taught him a hint of the despair he caused so many young girls. Money may ease financial needs and issues, but you can't ever undo the damage, and I mean... ever.

As in the Harvey Weinstein case, many very rich and powerful men engage in nefarious and abusive activities, often in plain sight. Epstein in had a prior conviction, but still operated as usual. So we have a system of governance that preaches equal protection under the law -- but that is so much lip service. The reality is quite different, as women and people of color can testify. Exhibit A: look at the effort it takes to bring any charges against POTUS.

Prosecutors said anyone who helped Epstein could face criminal charges? If these are federal prosecutors, they should be investigating the Manhattan DA’s office, since the DA’s office worked diligently to assist Epstein. NYC prosecutors actually went to court to argue that Epstein shouldn’t have to be registered as a high-level sex offender after he pleaded guilty and was sentenced in Florida. Has anyone ever heard of a prosecutor filing a motion to prevent a pedophile from being supervised? Funny how the Manhattan DA/Epstein story was reported once and then disappeared completely. The establishment knows how to take care of its own. The dirty secret is that Mr. Trump’s level of corruption didn’t stand out in the vile cesspool that is New York. Mr. Trump fits right in with all the other elites. The American people have been betrayed by a hopelessly corrupt establishment that includes the judiciary, and now we are rapidly becoming a third world country with crumbling infrastructure, broken institutions and pay-to-play politics. In 2004, Jane Jacobs published a book titled Dark Age Ahead, because America had implemented policies that she believed could eventually lead to a collapse of civilization, one enfeebled institution at a time, and she warned her fellow Canadians not to look to America for stability. The abject failure of our establishment is the reason why we have president Trump.
Jeong Yeob Kim (Los Angeles)
Years of reporting and personal observations have convinced me that vast wealth unchecks something dark in men, often masking their hunger through an illusion of good deeds. Worse, the same wealth emboldens the criminal and yet dampens average people in their enthusiasm for justice (let's face it, even those in law perceive their roles are just a job, and how many of us are courageous in our workplace, especially when home beckons?). So the wealthy get away, perhaps convincing themselves to stop or moderate, but only to grow more desperate in the pursuit of their desire as age takes its toll. Be it sex, money or just power, this is the playground for the wealthy. Scandals keep coming, Epstein today, perhaps Trump tomorrow, or some young tech entrepreneur on the verge of becoming a unicorn. Or maybe we'll never see their unchecked id as it ravages people in private palaces. Although the poor and middle class can be, and are, monsters, the wealthy have a knack (or a law firm or two) for getting away until they are too old, too poor, or just plain dead to care. Not sure if that's justice. In the case of Epstein, the wealthy knew he was a pedophile, law enforcement knew he was a pedophile, but apparently, outrage over the rape of children can be blunted by cold hard cash.
vvv03 (NY, NY)
Call me a conspiracy theorist but I think even reputable journalists might want to start adding the word "allegedly" before "died by suicide" at this point.
Stephen Bright (North Avoca NSW Australia)
It also remains unclear how Epstein acquired His assets, perhaps the most revealing information of all.
Valerie (Nevada)
The names of the men Epstein sold females to should be outed in newspapers across the country. These men are pedophiles and deviant human beings. Their names should be known to all, otherwise, they will simply find a new source to provide them with their entertainment - if they haven't already. By hiding the identity of the men involved, they will not be held accountable for their actions. The only way to stop this kind of behavior is to name names. The pain they feel has to outweigh the joy they feel in abusing young women.
Miriam Webster (Minneapolis)
No story is more important than this one. Using vulnerable human beings as objects is at the heart of our society’s decay. Whether it’s corporations entrapping workers in low paying jobs, discarding refugee families, profiting from environmental products that maim and kill or using children to become wealthy or simply because you can — this is at the core of suffering, inequality and moral failure.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Who isn't sick of seeing this sicko criminal's picture. NYT, if you need to write about this guy, don't include his picture. The man is disgusting. He makes me sick.
Joe (Goldberg)
So... where is the evidence? All I see so far are claims.
winchestereast (usa)
@Joe July 10, 2019 New Yorker , Margaret Talbot byline 1) 2007 53 page Federal Indictment prepared after FBI investigation 2) “This was not a ‘he said, she said’ situation. This was 50-something ‘shes’ and one ‘he’—and the ‘shes’ all basically told the same story,’ ” Michael Reiter, the retired Palm Beach police chief who worked on the case, told the Herald" 3) The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman, whose office brought the 2019 charges,“This conduct, as alleged, went on for years and involved dozens of young girls, some as young as fourteen. . . . The alleged behavior shocks the conscience.” 3)
WE (DC)
@winchestereast I’d bet there is a substantial paper trail. Keep in mind, DOJ had Lev Parnas’ phone & PC for THREE months before the recent revelations they contain were released to the public (no thanks to Bill Barr). Just because WE haven’t seen them doesn’t mean that they don’t exist.
Dominic (Astoria, NY)
There need to be prosecutions- of all of the individuals who assisted Epstein in running his twisted empire, and all of the individuals who partook in sexual exploitation of women and children- regardless of who they are, how famous they might be, or to what political affiliation they are aligned. There are hundreds, likely thousands, of women's and girl's lives that have been ruined because of this horrific criminal enterprise. All perpetrators must be held to account, the truth must be exposed, and measures must be taken to ensure similar crime rings are rooted out and extinguished in the present and kept from emerging in the future.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
He killed himself too soon. If he were alive today, chances are good that he'd be let out of jail early for testifying against Trump in the impeachment trial.

You have to wonder about all the attorneys that enabled all of this. He couldn't have done it without them.

Gio anni (Suriname)
They should make the list public of all his clients, not only the girls and women that have been used. Let all their rich faces fall to the ground.
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
Well, all those claiming Epstein was guilty of the most recent charges seem to forget that a judge dismissed all criminal charges on August 29, 2019. That technicality aside, Epstein was , no doubt, guilty of the most serious crime of all ;and one that often proves most often fatal. He knew too much.
DA (PA)
@Mark Shyres The charges against Epstein were dropped only because by 8/29/19 he had killed himself. It’s far more likely he took this route because he was guilty of the accused actions, not because of what he “knew.” I applaud the actions of the VI prosecutor, belated though they may be.
Mark Shyres (Laguna Beach, CA)
@DA No, the charges were dropped because he was dead. You actually believe he killed himself?
cynicalskeptic (Greater NY)
Every decade or so we have a scandal that surfaces briefly then disappears. We are told it was never as large as claimed, that the powerful people seen with the primary perpetrator had no involvement and everything fades from view. Witnesses go silent, some disappear. The primary people involved go quietly to prison, die mysteriously or commit suicide. There are whispers about blackmail, the involvement of intelligence agencies and a far large scandal but these are ignored. We never learn the full scope of things and eventually forget about it all - until the next scandal when the same cycle repeats.
Deborah (Philadelphia)
This reminds me of the DC Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey who had hundreds of telephone numbers and contact details of her wealthy political clients. She died by suicide too and that story has been forgotten.
WE (DC)
@cynicalskeptic Yup, were not hearing any more about Robert Kraft, are we? NFL’s Goodell silent - did nothing. Just wait til all dies down.
morningglory60 (New York New York)
NYT, please keep on this in full force. The girls and young women whose lives, innocence and security were stolen deserve to have society stand with them, with full knowledge of what happened and who else participated. AND for them to be held accountable. There are far too many connections with Bill Barr, his father, Trump and God knows who else, that all the insanity that has ensued has been purely coincidental. There is a massive cover up happening and it started with getting rid of Epstein himself. It's hard to make a statement like this, but it was the biggest scandal of 2019 in D.C.
WE (DC)
@morningglory60 Keeping this horrific story in the news is essential if we are ever to take the safety and well-being of women & girls seriously. For centuries, this behavior has been allowed to continue unchecked. I can tell you, without a doubt, having lived in the islands, every single adult there KNEW what was going there -“ Pedophelia Island” it was called. This needs to become like MeToo. The moment when the tide turns.
Robert (Seattle)
Epstein escaped justice but the men (pedophiles, rapists) for whom he trafficked these young women and girls must be brought to justice no matter how rich and powerful and connected they are. We cannot trust Barr to do this properly, though he has ostentatiously made himself the leader of the DOJ investigation. Barr's own father was an associate of Epstein. His own father, who was a school headmaster, secretly wrote pornographic books. Barr must recuse himself. The long list of names in the book that Epstein's butler released (you can find it with a simple Bing search) should be a starting point. Trump, for instance, is in there. Witnesses have put him at the scenes of some of the crimes. Dershowitz is in there, too. At least one of Epstein's accusers has also accused Dershowitz of raping her when she was still under the age of consent.
DW (Philly)
@Robert And Barr is also a very creepy individual.

In other Epstein news- last year when all this was being investigated there was an interview of a pilot who delivered 28 or so "calendar girls" to Mar-a-Lago for some event years ago. When he got there and asked where everyone was, he was told it was only Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump and the young women. Epstein has been shown to be a trafficker so whatever happened to that story??

Thank you, NYT photo editor, for choosing the mugshot of a ravaged Epstein instead of something more flattering. In that shot I see a photo of his hideous soul. Throughout the entire Epstein saga, I have been puzzled by the number of people who knew and did nothing. And here we are again. The girls are, allegedly, even younger. Yet no one acted to save them at the time. But there is money to grab now. So file a lawsuit and talk about it. Too little, too late.
Aileen Bowers (Pittsburgh, PA)
@Passion for Peaches At least in filing a law suit, there will be discovery and hopefully, what transpired will come to light. It’s too late to punish Epstein, but maybe others involved will be held accountable.
r a (Toronto)
It is a scandal that Epstein got away with this for as long as he did and that he was allowed the easy way out by corrupt or incompetent prison authorities, who will probably not face any consequences (except that maybe the guards, who are at the bottom of the pyramid, will get fired to protect their bosses). Epstein's estate and all of his collaborators and enablers should be investigated to the furthest reaches the law allows. He didn't do all this by himself. Good for the NYT for continuing to follow this story.
Mel Farrell (New York)

WHO ARE THE CLIENTS ???? That's the most important and seemingly most elusive information at the heart of this criminal enterprise. Epstein was a rapist and abuser of girls and women, but the enterprise did not exist for him alone, and it was not funded by him. He was the recipient of the funds, FROM CLIENTS, in exchange for access to these girls. If he had a database of girls, he must have had a database of clients.... right? Where is it?
Umberto (Westchester)
Why has reporting on Ghislaine Maxwell stopped? Why hasn't she been taken in and questioned? She was identified as Epstein's primary procurer of girls, but has dropped out of the news. Why? Aren't the authorities looking for her? And while we're on the subject of Epstein, the NYTimes should investigate MIT's relationship with this guy. The Media Lab's director was forced out, but its president Reif is escaping all blame. Yet Reif signed a document to approve funding from Epstein, and surely knew what was happening at the MIT's Media Lab, and certainly knew of Epstein's reputation, if not more. It seems to me he should be resigning, too.
Marcie (San Diego)
Epstein, Weinstein, rRump - all predators. We have to be diligent and put an end to all the coverup strategies. Hold them accountable. Take their assets. Make them pay for all the horrors they have inflicted upon countless girls and women. I mean really, the 15 year old trying to swim away from the predator’s island- terrifying.

“We will not remain complacent, and we will enforce our laws whatever way we can,” Ms. George said. “It doesn’t matter the social status of the person. It’s that the laws apply equally.” So that means that Trump won’t be welcomed there when the law (and common decency) catch up to him?
LT (NYC)
That sordid 2008 plea deal that covered all crimes and all co-conspirators, shocking as it was, did not cover future crimes as well. These documents reveal criminal activity as late as 2018. Time to file new charges, and this time, name all the names. Thanks to the NYTimes for continuing to cover this case. Otherwise it is in danger of being buried yet again. The victims deserve justice, and the public deserves protection from anyone and everyone who participated in this criminal enterprise.
val (Austria)
Who were his associates and helpers and are they being investigated? It is obvious now that he had a criminal organization that trafficked young girls and sexually exploited them. Therefore, it would be interesting to know who were the clients as they were involved in human trafficking and exploitation as well. Could it be that some powerful people, "his associates" but in actual fact pedofile criminals, are still blocking the full investigation?
JDUB (GTA)
I still have'nt seen one report on who Mr. Epsteins clients were. There are no real news agencies anymore.

My sincere interest is in also knowing which other male players were engaged in this infamous ring. We have seen hints of this and they are far reaching: into royalty, philanthropy, former and current heads of state, science. Let's bring this into the light please. These men also need to be held accountable and where applicable, charged. Also: DID Jeffrey Epstein kill himself??
Christina (Some Place Else)
It’s telling that there are many, many comments by people on this thread asking for reporting exposing the men who are the Johns, and there have to be journalists and prosecutors who have seen these lists, but laws protect the men listed since the devices listing them all appear to be protected. The laws were built to protect predators, and there are plenty of sexual predators and abusive men who are not wealthy and connected who get away with it for years; a teenager recently managed to get her abusive father arrested for harming her and her dogs by buying a camera for her room because police didn’t believe her for years. In the comments section of articles about Harvey Weinstein, many, many men support Mr. Weinstein’s rights of due process. When the names of predators and abusers are exposed, it doesn’t matter because almost all victims of abuse have no proof of being victimized other than emotional and psychological damage, and that’s never enough to convict predators, especially those with money. Harvey Weinstein still has his money, and I doubt that he will be convicted, just like the men Epstein sold young women and children to.
Greg Jones (Philadelphia)
everyone saw what happened with the senator in Godfather part II. This is life in reality for wealthy and the powerful as disgusting as it may be. Alex Acosta made the deal with Epstein because he had to protect some very important men like Clinton and Trump and Prince Andrew. Acosta should be held accountable.
Donna (NC)
I commented back in August about how many CHILDREN could have saved if only Epstein was treated as the dangerous sexual predator he was. The article was about Glenn Dubin and Epstein's Wall Street ties. I pointed out that nothing was being said about his numerous Palm connections, enablers and "guests" that used his services. I will help. William Meyer, who owns Meyer Jabara Hotels, lives two houses away from Epstein's mansion. Meyer was also the Chairman of the Kravis Center and honored by the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach last January. Both organizations honored or hosted men that were involved with Epstein including Barak, David Koch, Henry Kravis(both in Epstein's book). Palm Beach needs to be exposed for their part in all of this.
Donna (NC)
@Donna Allow me please to add that the Anti-Defamation League of Palm Beach County honored Barry Krischer. Yes, the State Attorney responsible for letting Epstein off. Where? At the Kravis Center in 2018! In 2011 the EEOC filed a lawsuit against Hurricane Grill and Wings in Royal Palm Beach. The suit alleges the owners repeatedly allowed a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy to sexually harass waitresses in 2009. Yes, Sheriff Bradshaw was in charge at the time.Of course the deputy stayed on until 2016. Notice a trend ? One of the owners at the time was Gail Meyer Asarch, William Meyer's sister. Palm Beach County is full of enablers and participants . So much more.
paul (CA)
@Donna There are thousands of other lives that still can be saved if money were provided for vulnerable poor children in the US . There are millions of such lives that could be saved abroad. These children are victims of sexual predators as well as of physical violence and unbelievable neglect. Indeed there is still outright child slavery in some parts of the world. When I see the outrage over Epstein past I wonder if it will ever ever go on to target that ongoing present and future reality.
Mystery Lits (somewhere)
Find Ghislaine Maxwell and we will get some answers.
Anaboz (Denver)
Very hard to believe they don’t know where she is.
Erik (Portland, OR)
Time to get sworn testimony from Maxwell, Dershowitz…and Gates.
New York Times reader (Boston)
@Erik And Bill Clinton and DJ Trump.
kim (nyc)
"Mr. Epstein, a wealthy financier was bringing girls as young as 11 and 12 to his secluded estate in the Virgin Islands, and kept a computerized database to track the availability and movements of women and girls." Not financier. Sex trafficker. There's no real evidence of financier-ing (outside of rumors of fraud and using ill-gotten gains to buy a reputation of being a charitable financier). Clearly, based on your own reporting, there's ample evidence of sex trafficking, human trafficking and money laundering.
RH (San Diego)
Epstein was one of Trump's friends. Does it not seem odd the camera tape at a Federal prison is not available. Also, of all the photos, tapes and hidden video recordings of Epsein and is friends abusing underage female children have yet to materialize. Was a picture or tape of Trump in that boxes of material seized by the FBI? No doubt it is very possible. Someone has seen the materials..will they be disclosed by someone who feels compelled to bring it to the attention of the American people. Anyone reading this who has knowledge of the materials should consider the serious options to disclose.
RedNeckDem (PNW)
one of Trumps favorite hangouts...
John (LINY)
This is the most solid base for a conspiracy I have seen in modern times. The names and the acts all reek of wealth and privilege. This will consume a generation.
RCJCHC (Corvallis OR)
I doubt it very much that his suicide was not murder or at least coerced to cover up all the very rich, powerful men who took part in the pedophile sickness. But by all means, let's just push that under the rug because protecting powerful men is always more important than protecting innocent children. What a sick culture.
Kathy (SF)
Powerful men have been protected at the expense of all other living things. May that pathetic tradition be ground into dust.
Koret (United Kingdom)
There has to be severe consequences for all Epstein's enablers, employees and associates who provided Epstein with young children to sexually abuse. This also extends to Epstein's fellow perpetrator's who are currently lying low hoping that Epstein's death has absolved them from paying for their heinous crimes. There must be criminal prosecutions of these predators in order to give the young women who have survived these appalling crimes justice. Civil compensation is never enough.
Maxy Green (Teslaville)
Expecting us to accept that Epstein killed himself rather than having been hit is insane. I can't decide who I'd more like to find out there are video tapes of: Clinton, Trump or Dershowitz.
candaceb108 (Greenwich, CT)
He didn't kill himself. Medical examiner has said the injuries were more consistent with strangling. C'mon!!!
Joe (New Orleans)
@candaceb108 The official who concluded the autopsy said it was a suicide. You're confusing the government official with a celebrity medical examiner hired by Epsteins brother. Is that really who you trust?
Hothouse Flower (USA)
@Joe He was the Medical Examiner for the City of New York. I think his credentials are pretty solid.
Joe (New Orleans)
@Hothouse Flower The person paying him to make that conclusion is Epstein's brother.
Kristin J (Queens, NY)
Can we PLEASE stop saying that he died by suicide as if that is an indisputable fact? I don't think anyone actually believes it.
Shelby (Downstage Center)
Why is epstein referred to as Mr.? “Mr.” is defined as a term of respect or courtesy, an honorific—none of which he deserves, obviously. I understand the concept of innocent until proven guilty but I have seen articles in which convicted murderers are referred to as “Mr.” However, in the British press I have noticed the term “Mr.” used while someone is on trial but dropped once they are convicted. Is this a style issue that the NYTimes is bound by? Why can’t he simply be referred to as epstein? Anyone have an answer?
Peter Czipott (San Diego)
@Shelby It's in the NY Times style manual that adult males are to be referred to as "Mr." and adult females as "Ms." No exceptions of which I'm aware; plenty of heinous dictators, mass murderers, et al. have been referred to as "Mr." in the Times. I agree that it's past time for them to change the procedure...
Zoenzo (Ryegate, VT)
Why is Prince Andrew not being held accountable as well. I love the outrage of Harry and Meghan, yet barely any anger towards a pedophile. Truth be told who would want to be in a family that covers up and protects a pedophile?
RDY (St. Louis)
@Zoenzo Prince Andrew has 'stepped away' from his ceremonial responsibilities for the crown family. Isn't that punishment enough? /s
ABaron (USVI)
@Zoenzo No one gets to pick their familes, not even the royals.
dw (Boston)
people such as this is why many of us chose not to work on wall street. And yet all of our money and investments are there. It would be nice to remove ourselves from the engine that drives such despicable debauchery that arises from its greed.
Edward (Sherborn, MA)
Who is hiding and protecting Ghislaine Maxwell?
candaceb108 (Greenwich, CT)
@Edward This wasn't just trafficking, the purpose was extortion of powerful people...for organized, multinational crime, er Simeon Mogilevich.
Boggle (Here)
Or is she still even alive?
Julie (Houston)
more than blackmail. ...much more.
HadesBabe (Daytona Beach, FL)
Geoffrey Berman sure spent a lot bringing Epstein in to meet his fate. What’s he been doing for Epstein’s victims since then, other than acting on Trump’s behalf to block Vance’s subpoena for Trump’s financials?
George A (Florida)
Epstein was a notorious audio and videophile who had cameras all over his homes. Where are all the photos and videos that were certainly confiscated upon his arrest? Those would certainly implicate many of the abusers of all stripes. WHERE IS ALL THAT EVIDENCE!
Gerithegreek518 (Louisville, KY)
Ash heaps somewhere outside his various mansions, along with the bones of the paid staff members. Was Rudy his attorney?
Sparky (NYC)
@George A. Have wondered that myself. Could alter the course of U.S. history if they're found.
Theresa (New York)
I wonder how many children he fathered are out there. Whether or not he had intended to impregnate young women (he did intend) he had to have accidentally impregnated one of his victims.
V (NY)
Didn’t we read that in fact he wanted to spread his DNA far and wide?
Al (California)
Absolutely unbelievable that such an evil person is not alive to face justice. How is it that Barr was unable to keep him alive.
SU (NY)
@Al Epstein forced to hang himself, There is two president at stake, Clinton and Trump. Barr did very efficiently what he supposed to do. protect president and presidency at all cost.
winchestereast (usa)
@Al An extraordinary coincidence that Barr's father hired a young Epstein, with no college degree, to teach at his private school.
J. (Midwest)
As to why Barr didn’t keep Epstein alive, one possible clue is found in a Complaint, including the verified affidavits that support the Complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, against Epstein and Trump for rape. The plaintiff dismissed her complaint and vanished overnight after receiving death threats. Read it thoroughly. Sadly, given what we know of Trump’s past conduct and of Epstein, the allegations are extremely credible.
Skeptic 488 (Michigan)
How about publishing a list of everyone that "visited" this island?
RCJCHC (Corvallis OR)
@Skeptic 488 YES!
apparatchick (Kennesaw GA)
It's a good thing someone is investigating this. Barr sure won't.
Kathy (SF)
It is long past time to turn the tables on every single piece of garbage who participated or enabled this. Men who will do this will do it again and again while loudly proclaiming their religious credentials or blaming immigrants for our social problems. THEY are the problem and they always have been.
BKL (ny)
I read articles like these and then wonder how every NYTimes story on women being harassed and sexually assaulted is still followed by hundred of comments worrying about the poor men and false accusations and ruined careers. Don't misunderstand me. No one wants innocent people falsely accused, much less convicted, but THIS is the reality of women and girls in the world. Horrible people abuse and powerful people cover up for them. It's terrifying to know that things are not really better at all for the least fortunate among us.
Passion for Peaches (Left Coast)
@BKL, yes, there seems to be a small, misogynistic Incel contingent that always turns up on comment threads attached to articles having to do with women, consent, #METOO, and the repugnant Epsteins of this world. I have long since stopped reading their comments. I do a quick scan for the usual language, and speed past.
Bob R (Portland)
@BKL Well, on this article at least I haven't read any such comments, although I'm not done yet. But there were certainly many of them on yesterday's story about the Weinstein trial.
Nathan Gant (Oviedo, FL)
@BKL True, Epstein was a friend of DJT. But it goes deeper than that. Look at how many people in the federal government on Trump's side were willing to denounce the government/CIA whistle blower concerning the so-called "drug deal" in Ukraine? The president tweeted about harming that person, with accusations of treason. It's bad enough that he has a nasty 'toilet' mouth, lies about everything under the sun, and he illegally keeps trying to expose the whistle blower to the public (clearly not in the interests of personal safety of the informant). His world isn't far removed from political assassination here and abroad. Epstein last about as long as Lee Harvey Oswald after he was arrested.
AM Murphy (New Jersey)
"...Mr. Epstein operated with impunity for years.." If the Acosta plea deal had only talked with witnesses and reviewed documents, then a "no one is above the law" approach might have prevented children from being raped.
Karl (WY)
Enough already. Everyone is tired of more scapegoating Epstein as if he did everything alone while all the rich, white Christian people who colluded with him remain hidden and beyond the reaches of the law--you, know, those same ones who arranged for his jail cell camera to be removed and then had him "suicided" before he could stand trial and reveal their identities.
SU (NY)
@Karl In this sordid story that is the bottom line, For protecting Rich and political personas , Epstein forced to hang himself. If he wouldn't participate with this plan, plan B was making him killed by one of the cell mate. He was clearly instructed , there is only way forward for him is death.
Desire Trails (Berkeley)
@Karl I think you need to look up the word “scapegoating.” It does not mean what you think it means.
jimmboy (manhattan)
This whole scenario stinks of collusion in some very high places. it also feeds the suicide/cover up narrative. How about this item alone -- where the heck is Epstein's associate Ghislanie Maxwell? Can no one find her? She walks free?
HadesBabe (Daytona Beach, FL)
@jimmboy Spot on. And where’s the documents that the FBI took from Epstein’s home safe?
Passion for Peaches (Left Coast)
@jimmboy, there are plenty of wanted people “walk(ing) free,” at any given moment. Fugitives abound. Maxwell undoubtedly had (Epstein provided) money stashed in offshore accounts, and she has always had beneficial connections — Epstein cultivated the relationship with her for her connections. She also knows a lot dirt about a lot of people. So it’s not hard to disappear, with all that capital.
Tony (New York City)
@jimmboy She is probably in the witness protection program since she is the only person alive who knows the truth. There is a great deal of cover up in this case and many many people are in hiding that much is sure.
Cousy (New England)
We really need the testimony of Ghislaine Maxwell and anyone else who worked in Epstein's home and on his business affairs. This has gone on too long.
JM (San Francisco)
@Cousy Who is protecting Maxwell. Charge her with one hundred counts of sex trafficking with a sentence of 50 years and get her talking. The world wants the truth!
Cbac (St. Cloud, MN)
Why haven't they brought in Maxwell? I guess you do not have to think too much about that. She knows everything about these degenerates. She is one of them.
Julie (Houston)
wow. thank you Ali Watkins and Denise George. "computerized data base to track availability and movement of young girls" THAT is Ghislaine Maxwells area of expertise. Soooooo much more on this story. Bring justice...MORAL JUSTICE...not only legal justice.
Katie (Atlanta)
“We will not remain complacent,” says Attorney General George. Well, the Virgin Islands was surely complacent for years and years as the open secret of Epstein’s outrageous and illegal island activities went on. So, what she really should have said is that the Virgin Islands won’t remain complacent while there is a lot of money potentially available now that Epstein is dead. Government failed the victims at every level and in every geographical area that Epstein touched.
Peter Czipott (San Diego)
@Katie One hopes that Attorney General George isn't one of those who may have been complacent, or even complicit.
Jacquie (Iowa)
And now all those men who surrounded Mr. Epstein are trying to talk their way out of why they hung around with him, used his money, and took trips to his private criminal enterprise.
Moosh (Vermont)
What a monster. He got away with far too much for far too long. Go after all his accomplices, please, everyone who treated these girls like personal playthings, toys. And go after every woman and man who kept Epstein's sordid life spinning, who stood by him, helped him, and who was paid by him, for abusing girls, raping girls, for years on end.
JM (San Francisco)
@Moosh Throw the book at every male whose name appears on the Epstein's flight manifestos. They need to be exposed and punished severely for their perverted actions. The Virgin Island employees who knew what was going on must be prosecuted as well. Even maids and cleaning staff.
Tony (New York City)
@Moosh I am sure Epstein has been replaced by another rich playboy and the same madness is taking place. One person exits and another person replaces them, and the same scenario plays itself out . Where are the people who care so much about the unborn, they don't care what type of lives they have, as long as they are born into madness. where are the adults? where is the legal system, We know where the yare. controlled by the rich politicians and there needs.
Zoenzo (Ryegate, VT)
@JM Agreed, everyone make and female who allowed this to happened without saying anything.
