The best part of Christmas is the traditions. My parents order my siblings and I matching Christmas pajamas that we open and wear on Christmas Eve and then the kids all go on a car ride where we play holiday music and look at our neighborhoods lights. My dad makes us do a card every year, so we all decorate the tree, get into our outfits and take like a hundred pictures while listening to Bob Dylan's Christmas album. My favorite tradition is our annual Christmas party, we all dress up and see our relatives and family friends and listen to music. Some of my dads work friends play guitar and bring them to play Christmas songs as we all sing along. One tradition we never skip is going to church every Sunday but especially on Christmas Eve, this year was quite the experience. My family is Catholic and since a good amount of Hispanics are Catholic they hold a Spanish mass. My dad got the time wrong and accidentally brought us to the Spanish mass. The greeters laughed with us when we realized because they know us and know that only my dad knows Spanish. We still sat through the whole mass because we knew the order and had translation books. However at the end they played Feliz Navidad while handing out candy canes and I could put my book down and sing with everyone else. The best part about Christmas isn't the presents, but being with the people you love and celebrating traditions with your community. The music is what completes these traditions.

I think that Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is a fine song, but gets extremely annoying after awhile. Many other songs are like this such as Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, or Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer. Hearing it over and over again can drive a person insane, and that’s why I have a special place in my heart for people who work in retail over the holidays. There are some songs that I love to hear like Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and I Want a Hippopotamus for Chrismas only because It drives my parents insane.

Christmas has always been one of my favorite times of the year, All the peace, love, joy, happiness and time with the ones you love is something That I really hold dear to my heart. Though the being with family is beautiful.. The music is something that brings the comradery together, Every year on the 1st of December I start playing Christmas music all throughout the month. I have an entire playlist and you best believe “All I Want for Christmas: by Mariah Carey is on that list! That song is one of my favorites to listen to every year. Within the article it talks about how long it took for the song to reach Number 1 on the Billboard singles chart. I find that quite surprising I thought it would take weeks to reach number 1 once the song came out in 1994. The lyrics, and sound the song makes it so good plus the high note she hits within the song gets me every time. That song will always be a hit for me, but their are other artists that have Christmas songs that I love just as much. Artists such as Brian McKnight, Boys to Men, Pentatonix and the list just goes on, Christmas music will never fail to put a smile on my face and something that I truly look forward to every year!

Listening to holiday music is one of my favorite things to do as the holidays approach. I’ll be in the car with my siblings and my mother and I’ll listen to Christmas music on my phone without a care in the world. My siblings and I have always loved the holidays we would participate in every aspect of it reaching from watching Christmas movies, and decorating the house and the tree, to us listening to Christmas music all month long. My playlist for holiday music consists of the Jackson 5 holiday album. My favorite song that I have been listening to since before I can remember is ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’. My family extending to my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandfather will listen to old time Christmas music the whole time the family is together whether it be a week or a day or two, Christmas music is played. We also listen to the ‘This Christmas’ soundtrack since that’s all of our favorite Christmas movie. The holidays playlist is always fun to listen to, especially with family.

Christmas is by far my favorite time of year. Chilly weather to bundle up in blankets and comfy pajamas. Nothing warms me up like a cup of hot chocolate. Wrightsville beach lights up its streets with christmas lights and decorations. Every year and and my friends pile into a car, and ride around the beach blasting holiday music. It's the most wonderful time of the year, they say. My favorite holiday memory has to be christmas 2011. My cousins were my best friends and we would hang out everyday over the weekend. My uncle threw us together a holiday playlist and our top song was Dominic the Donkey. We choreographed our best routine and practiced it religiously until we knew it like the back of our hand. Then Christmas day at my grandmas house we performed the dance for our whole family to watch. Of course being the youngest everyone thought it was funny and adorable, but we were serious. Being laughed at for our dance that we spent hours practicing was upsetting as an 8 year old. Every year we pull up the video and watch it on Christmas day with the whole family. The excitement in our faces to the pure disappointment at our family laughing at us is comical at this point. Holidays sounds like Dominic the Donkey and others remind me of fond memories with my family and friends that will last me a lifetime.

Personally, I love holiday music. But I cannot stand when people start listening to it too soon. In the article, it references how Mariah fell asleep at 11:59pm on halloween night, and at 12:00am, woke up getting a call from santa and excitingly saying, “It’ssss tiiiiiiime!” Me being Jewish, sometimes I feel a little left out on the holiday cheer, and jokingly say to my friends, “where’s the Chanukah music at?” They all laugh, and then we move on, but I’m serious! Where’s all the Chanukah hype? There are nearly 1 million christmas tracks, compared to the small handful of Chanukah songs. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas music and love songs like Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” I've been listening to them ever since the start of December. But I think that the spotlight needs to be shared a little. I have never once heard a Chanukah song on the radio. I just want to jam out to a rockin’ Chanukah song! So, wishing you a happy Chanukah, Chag Urim Sameach!

I never truly got into the Christmas season until January, which is unfortunate, as I have to wait another 300 something days till the holiday ACTUALLY comes. My dad puts on Christmas music during December, rightfully so, and I enjoy it. But there's one song, not necessarily a Christmas song, that captures the magical, mystical feeling that a holiday can produce that's quite hard to describe. Cosmo Sheldrake's "Come Along" feels and sounds like a Disney movie you'd watch on a crisp evening when the sun is barely touching the sky. The faint jingles, the sudden calmness and bursts of energy throughout it give it a feeling similar to "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It's intimidating but welcoming. December can be a rather stressful time for people, despite one of the happiest holidays approaching, and the song captures that feeling so well, it's difficult to describe. What I like about it is that it doesn't try to be extremely deep and have some super-secret meaning, much like Christmas movies and songs, it's simple. It's direct. And that's sometimes all you need.

Since I can remember Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has existed in my grandparents holiday playlist. Every year when the intro begins they attempt to mimic her voice and dance in their seats. What’s funny is that my grandparents are not the targeted audience of this artist. Also my grandparents are the toughest critics I know. The fact that they enjoy this song is a Christmas miracle in itself. The article explains the holiday music genre, and why this specific song is appealing to a broad audience. It separates the classics from the reinterpreted and says, “Mariah lives in that sweet spot of both.” This “sweet spot” could explain my grandparents initial and lasting attraction towards the song. This song is one of my favorites out of the holiday season. Mainly because I know it’s Christmas once I hear Mariah Carey belting throughout every grocery aisle, radio station, and my grandparents car.

It doesn’t feel like Christmas time until you’re driving down the street and you hear the opening notes to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You.” As cheesy and undoubtedly annoying the song is, it makes you feel a little bit more festive. It’s not necessarily the content of the song that I love; it’s the festive feeling I get every time I hear it. When I was younger, my mom and I would always jam out in the car on the way to school to that song around this time, and I can’t help but sing along to it now whenever I’m in the car. The song always brings back memories of magical Christmases as a little kid, and always makes me feel a bit more festive.

For many, Christmas songs are the perfect way to get in the mood for the Christmas season. For me, it’s a little deeper than that. As someone who has played the piano for nine years, Christmas songs have a whole different meaning for me. Not only do I get to hear them almost every single day of December when I practice, but I’ll know the whole melody and the lyrics of the songs I play by the time my annual Christmas concert rolls around. In the past, I’ve played everything from “Jingle Bells” to “Hark the Herald Angels.” For this years concert, I’ve decided to learn and play “Carol of the Bells,” one of my family's top five favorites. Surprisingly, I’ve never played “All I Want For Christmas Is You” yet. I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually, but in the meantime, I really enjoyed reading the whole backstory on Mariah’s song and how it took over 30 years to have it become her 19th No. 1 song. Her determination is inspirational considering that she released the song 25 years ago. I’m glad that I got to research a little deeper on a song that I’ve heard so many times, but never stopped to think about why it’s such a Christmas classic.

There is so many components that make up Christmas, and Christmas music is a very crucial part. Although, Christmas music may be thought to be in one category of music, there's many different versions. There's more classical songs that feature Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra or some newer ones by Ariana Grande and Sia. There really is a Christmas song for any age or type of music a person likes. Personally, I love the song "I'll be home for Christmas". It's a very sentimental song, that describes the importance of home during the Christmas season.

Christmas music is one of the most iconic parts of the holiday season. Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, the infamous “Baby It's Cold Outside”, but the pinnacle of the christmas love sick teen playlist has to be Mariah Carey’s hit song “All I want for Christmas is you” When this song came out it skyrocketed to it’s no. 1 spot. For me this song comes just below the classic Christmas songs that no matter how many brilliant adaptations are made will never be beat. This song brings back vivid memories of my sister and I singing All I want for Christmas is You and other favorites that will never die out.

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the music. The family get-togethers on Christmas Eve in the living room wouldn't be as memorable, the parades would be missing something, and the holiday season wouldn't feel the same. Christmas music always manages to set the perfect mood for hanging out with your family and makes memories you won't forget for years. When I hear the line, "it's the most wonderful time of the year," I can't help but look into the past to all of the great times I've spent with my family and friends with that exact same song playing. Sure, when I hear my friends playing Christmas music in the summer, I don't feel the same, but in the holiday season, there's nothing like Christmas music. It fills rooms and spreads cheer in a way I'll never understand; it's like I can't stop smiling when Christmas music comes on at the right time. I may not have a go to holiday playlist, but that's because most all Christmas music is enjoyable. Maybe it's just the people I'm with and the things I do while listening to Christmas music that make me so fond of it, but Christmas wouldn't be the same for me without the music.

@Sam McNamara You made some great points about how Christmas music can get people in the holiday spirit. There is no time like the holidays, and there is nothing like holiday music to get us in the perfect mood. Songs like Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and your example of "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" are important around the holidays because they send us walking down memory lane. It reminds us of all of the good times that we've had in the past and all of the good times that are to come. Christmas music never fails to make you feel happy and completes the "holiday feel" that we need in December.

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” reaching number one on the Billboard singles chart is no surprise to me, however I am astonished at the fact that it took twenty five years since its debut considering how often it’s played during the winter holidays. I end up having to listen to the hit song from time to time at family events to get into the “Christmas spirit”, sometimes even as early as November, so I can say it gets old pretty fast. One song that especially drives me crazy is "Feliz Navidad". I hear it everywhere, it just never stops. By the end of December I’m usually so sick of hearing those repetitive Christmas songs that I’m glad the holidays are over. I love Mariah, but that song is just overplayed. I find it a little funny how she jokes about being “in the womb” when she wrote it, and it ended up being one of the most remembered songs of all time.

Christmas songs are some of my favorite by far only because they just remind me of the season itself and all the cheer it brings to everyone. Not only do the songs themselves sound cheery they make you feel it so I can say without hesitation that all christmas songs, done properly, are good songs. My all time favorite christmas singer/songwriter is Michael Buble because I have grown up listening to him and I do not know a single poorly made song by him, or cover. Going off the article which is based on Miriah Carey’s song, “All I Want For Christmas is You” I think that her song plays a huge role in the holiday season. Even though at times yes it can get just a little overplayed and repetitive it still is an all time favorite by millions of people all around the world. I may not have been alive and even knew what christmas was when the song was released but what I do know is that 25 years ago and even 25 years in the future it is still going to be a hit for all ages.
Jillian Steeves (Danvers, MA)
I can't stand Christmas music. It is such a narrowly defined genre that there are only so many songs you can play before you have to start playing the same ones over and over again. And it seems that no matter where I go, I am hearing Christmas songs. Teachers play them in their classrooms, they play it in the store where I work, and it is always on the radio when I go out. There are only so many times I can listen to "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" in a three-week period before I get sick of it. I would much rather listen to a wider variety of songs in another genre.
Simone Cronier (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
@Jillian Steeves I can understand why you might feel annoyed when yet another Christmas song starts playing. I can not listen to Christmas music until exactly December 1 or I’ll start to feel queasy, but it only lasts for a month, so instead of resenting it, you should try to just enjoy it. Many artists are releasing their own versions of old Christmas songs, or even new ones you could listen to instead. There’s also the Trans Siberian Orchestra that you could try. They put a modern twist on the music. Try listening to their version of Carol of the Bells first, it’s my favorite. There’s a variety of different songs you could try instead of just “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” just ask your teacher to play a different soundtrack at the beginning of class so you don't suffer through the same generic pieces.
Andrew Gonthier (Hoggard High School in Wilmington, NC)
Christmas music for me always gives me a sentimental feeling. Thanksgiving to New Years is probably my favorite time of the year, and I love everything about the holidays. The spirit, food, movies, and music. Christmas music is so catchy and it gives a good feeling, and they never get old. Some of the songs we love today have been around for fifty years or more. Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas is you’’ is a very catchy song that has been around for Twenty five years. I am not at all surprised that it reached number 1 on the Billboard singles charts. It is always on the radio and the uplifting spirit that it brings and it’s catchy tune make it a classic Christmas song.
Ainsley Woodruff (Hoggard High School : Wilmington, NC)
I am that person who starts listening to Christmas music on November 1st. Holiday music always makes me happy and It’s always fitting whether it be when you are cleaning, holiday shopping, at a Christmas party, or getting ready for school. I make my holiday playlist ever based on the one from the previous year I weed out all the songs I don’t like anymore and add new songs. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is a classic holiday songs it’s always the first song on my playlist. I personally think it’s one of the best holiday songs but I do have to agree that it’s overplayed. But somehow every time it comes on I find myself humming along. Although I do have a friend who just can’t stand Mariah Carey she always gives “All I Want For Christmas Is You” a pass. When the article stated it just recently hit number one after 25 year I was surprised I thought it had already been at number before. My favorite holiday songs are by Ariana Grande I like her because she has a range of holiday songs some Christmas and some not. But there is one Christmas song I can't stand although it's considered a classic “ I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas” always gets skipped when it comes on. I learned about this song when I was in 5th grade and i thought it was the funniest thing but now it’s one of the few Christmas songs that drives me crazy.
