Michelle Wolf Doesn’t Want to Be Your Folk Hero

I love her. I have kept her standup show from a few years ago, on my dvr. Anytime I’m feeling depressed about the world, I rewatch that show and feel better, she knows how to show anger and be funny about.
bronx refugee (austin tx)
I suppose that we can all be grateful Ms. Wolf decided not to replicate.
Rebecca (Philadelphia, PA, USA)
@bronx refugee She can still replicate if she CHOOSES to. Abortion isn't sterilization.
Marjorie Garcia (San Diego)
@bronx refugee You do realize that many women who have abortions later go on to have children when it is the right time for them
E.E. Chace (Eugene, OR)
As a person who studiously does not watch TV; don't own one. I didn't even know she had a show. But I have seen her, and think she is very, very, smart and funny. She echos the deep anger that most smart women keep under wraps, and it is incredibly satisfying to have that angst uncovered and flaunted in the faces of the ruling class of men who try to tamp it down.
Paul from Long Island (Long Island)
@E.E. Chace "TV"s are just large screens that can display whatever you like - movies, nature scenes, Internet content, the list is long. Most cable companies encrypt their "TV" content in a way that cannot even be decoded by current model "TV"s, so you can't actually use one to "watch TV".
ggallo (Middletown, NY)
I didn't understand what the big deal over that Sarah Sanders makeup joke was about. Either laugh or don't laugh and either way it was clever. So there! But, I'll tell ya, one of the smartest things I have read in a long time is .... “Over the past couple of years,” ... “we’ve developed this amazing ability to get mad at anyone for any reason.” Yeah. It's like we all got a chip inserted in us that replaced that (not as efficient) chip we had on our shoulder. I think the next logical step would be to outlaw being funny, or at least laughter.
Philly girl (PA)
Brilliantly funny... love her.
CKent (Florida)
Lenny Bruce would laugh his head off at a Michelle Wolfe routine. Along with many others, she carries the torch that he lit long ago--but it burns brighter in her hands. Give it to 'em, Michelle. If they can't take it, it's their fault.
Marti Mart (Texas)
Well I don't want her to be my folk hero either. So we are even.
br (san antonio)
How did I not know she was cancelled?... I've been looking forward to the next season of her show. Well, however we get more of her is a good thing.
Alexander Harrison (Wilton Manors, Fla.)
One problem for Alexander Harrison re Ms. Wolf is that I don't find her at all funny. PC has killed comedy, and the really funny comics, well you would have to see old Johnny Carson shows on Youtube from the 1980's to see them:David Bremmer, Gary Shandling , Rodney Dangerfield, Don Rickles inter alios. They were funny but avoided taking political sides like the plague.Too classy. Ms. Wolf has a perpetual supercilious smile on her face and do not understand why. She claims to be unconventional, to threaten other folks' received ideas, but she is anything but.Five minutes of Rush Limbaugh, with his mockery of the Democratic Party, is worth more, comedy wise than all those dull, monotonous comics on late night t.v. together, including Ms. Wolf. And for the sake of"pudeur,"good taste, if you choose to have an abortion ,why not keep that to yourself. You are setting a bad example.
Frank Travaline (South Jersey)
@Alexander Harrison ….Rush Limbaugh? NOT FUNNY. When we need a rational discussion about abortion, you tell her to keep it to herself. It's a funny world.
Tom (South California)
Hi Michelle, I love your work. Haven't heard you in a while, look forward to seeing your latest material. .
K (New Jersey)
Michelle, forget the haters. You spoke truth to power. You weren’t commenting on Sanders’ appearance; you were commenting on her constant lying to the public.
Milton Lewis (Hamilton Ontario)
Michelle sometimes confuses outrageous with funny. And sometimes political commentary with funny. If I want politics or news I will turn to the NYT or CNN. When I go to a comedy club I want to laugh. Just laugh. Enough Trump jokes.
Dennis Denver (Denver)
Did you see her in a comedy club? Is she doing trump jokes? Just wondering because when I saw her last year there was maybe one or two trump jokes. That is pretty apolitical for a comedy show!
ggallo (Middletown, NY)
@Milton Lewis - I'm the same way about sports. When I'm watching a game on TV and someone tells a joke. .... I get enraged. Everything has to be in the right box. No crossovers.
IRememberAmerica (Berkeley)
"Wolf was disparaged by journalists, former White House officials and President Trump himself, who wrote in a tweet that she was “filthy” and that she had “totally bombed.” And the White House Correspondents’ Association said in a statement, 'Unfortunately, the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that evening." All these constituencies said the very same thing about Stephen Colbert in 2005, about his most brilliant Correspondents' Dinner routine of all time, when he neatly shivved George Bush, who was sitting right next to him and forced to smile through it all (he didn't quite). So you're in good company, Michelle.
Cynthia starks (Zionsville, In)
Good thing. Never heard of her.
person (Nashville)
When I got to the part about her abortion joke and La Croix I laughed out loud. I’m an old lady and I found that very funny. Very Oscar Wilde and Dorthy Parker. You’re funny, Michelle.....and I admire you.
Vanessa Hall (Millersburg, MO)
“burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye,” The best comedy is based on truth. Apparently some people were unable to handle the truth behind Michelle Wolf's comedy..
Jon (DC)
I, for one, am sick to death of female comics leaning so heavily (and grossly) on their abortions and menstruation. There's a big difference between histrionics and comedy.
Maria (Melbourne Australia)
@Jon menstruation and abortions aren't gross, they are part of life. Men who associate on any kind of regular basis with women can take discussing these.
JEAi (Everett, Wa)
@Jon The biology of being female is messy, can be difficult and painful, and at times profoundly life-changing (like giving birth). So sometimes women need to laugh about it. Apologies for sounding snarky, but have you ever considered that men are about half the audience? Maybe this joke wasn't 'for you'. But, the next one might be.
ggallo (Middletown, NY)
@Jon - I used to go to a lot of open mics and comedy clubs and I can not remember a male comic that didn't refer to his genitals and often.
Kirby (Sioux Falls)
This person will never be a thing no matter how much the media tries to make her one. If I really want snarky, shallow attempts at humor, I’ll just get on Twitter.
ggallo (Middletown, NY)
@Kirby - She already is a thing. However, the Twitter reference is funny. If I want snarky and shallow I just hang with my friends.
Philly girl (PA)
@Kirby She is already " a thing" and has been for a while.
Hugh MacDonald (Los Angeles)
It would help if Ms. Wolf was actually funny.
Genevieve (Brooklyn Nyc)
Thanks Michelle Wolf for being so funny and so funny at the correspondents’ dinner!!!!
A.G. (St Louis, MO)
Michelle Wolf is a mean woman. She's merciless in her attacking of others in an obnoxious way. Her mocking of Sarah Sanders at the WH Correspondents' dinner was plain cruel with little comic value. She can be successful without being so offensive. Only listeners can clip her mean wings. I hope advertisers also will join in that endeavor. For the record, I am a liberal Democrat.
Dennis Denver (Denver)
Her criticism of Sanders was so intelligent. There was nothing cruel about calling a liar a liar. And to do it without a crude personal attack is what makes her brilliant.
Ess (The South)
@A.G. With that kind of description (mean, merciless, mocking, cruel, obnoxious, etc) maybe as a stand-up comedian she missed her calling and should have instead run for President?
JEAi (Everett, Wa)
@A.G. Are you kidding? First that you are a liberal Democrat. Second that Michelle Wolf said anything we all aren't thinking. The smoky eye joke is the epic joke of the 'early' Trump era. It exposed how vulnerable Trump and the Republican party are to any kind of criticism. They can dish it out, but they can't take it. Michelle Wolf is fearless and I am proud of her.
Misplaced Modifier (Former United States of America)
She is wicked smart and a national treasure. Love her!
Kate Durand (North Miami Beach)
Michelle, 'You're so funny'. You were by far the best MC the correspondence dinner has ever had. I agree that you should go harder. I will be watching and laughing.
Nick Schleppend (Vorsehung)
“Unfortunately, the entertainer’s monologue was not in the spirit of that evening.” Yes, I agree; it was hysterical!
Robert (France)
That's refreshing. Maybe she'll name it? Dems shouldn't wince at provoking people in an election year.
Janet (Northern California)
Thank you Michelle Wolf for your honesty about your abortion. It's time to acknowledge that for many of us abortion is the best way to end a pregnancy. It's time to fight back and acknowledge we are not embarrassed, ashamed or depressed about it. My abortion was also at lunch time. Thank you Dave Itzkoff for your profile and good luck Michelle Wolf. I wish you well in your career.
nom de guerre (Kirkwood, MO)
@Janet I am pro-choice. That said, I can't imagine aborting a fetus without feeling sad, even with the certainty it was the correct option.
emsique (China)
I love her in spite of the voice that can peel paint. Or maybe because of it.
Dennis Denver (Denver)
Loved her at WHCD, and her HBO special and then was fortunate to see her in person. She is so smart. Very intelligent comedy, if you listen.
HrhSophia (South Orange, NJ)
Her performance at the dinner was absolutely hilarious and so clever. Ash for the smoky eye was genius. Or would be if she were a man.
RMM (VA)
I cannot stand this woman's comedy. In fact, I do not believe she is funny at all. The purpose of comedy is to triumph over unpleasant circumstance. Her work, however, has only vulgar effects.
lars (France)
@RMM The best comedy is to comment on society and social mores and to act as a mirror to these things for a truer understanding of our current world. Triumphing "over unpleasant circumstances" should be left entirely up to Disney.
Roger (Castiglion Fiorentino)
@RMM Is that actually the purpose of comedy, or only for you?
Maureen Pacino (Los Angeles)
@RMM what's the purpose of a press secretary? to lie? Her takedown was spot-on. More please.
maria5553 (nyc)
I loved her WHCD performance as expected the humor was biting but not more so than anyone else, if a man had delivered that routine I don't believe it would have caused a single raised eyebrow. How can Sara Huckabee Sanders look so hurt over hearing that she tells lies, does she not realize she tells lies, she agreed to tell lies to help trump, she knows that, this whole administration is characterized by the ability to dish it out and the inability to take it.
Morals Matter (Skillman NJ)
@maria5553 Well said. He can dish it out, but he can't take it. Trump demeans everything and everyone in his path, but when someone says something disparaging about him, he whines like a little baby. Come to think of it, that seems to be the general reaction of the Republican Party to those mean old Democrats.
Tom Scott (Santa Rosa, CA)
I'm going to swim upstream here and say I'm not a Michelle Wolf fan, and I find a little of her goes a long way. She was perfect for the Daily Show is those short time blocks, bet wears on me over a full hour. I also didn't care for her WH Correspondents performance. She said things that needed to be said and it's not that I was offended by it, I just didn't think it was funny.
Roy (Florida)
Other people use candor in their humor and do it well. I can't think of anyone I enjoy more than Michelle Wolf. People will still be talking about her comments, I hope, in 20 years when Trump and all his mess is just a bad memory. If MIchelle, was not doing something so right, whe would be a lot less a topic of conversation.
MM (New York)
I want to thank Michelle Wolf and all women who are open about their abortions. I had one too, and don't (yet) feel comfortable talking about it publicly, partly because my child doesn't know about it (yet) and partly because I'm an elementary school teacher and I don't know what the reaction would be in my school community. I think women who are able to be open and public about it do us all a great service.
Alista (MS)
What is the service they provide exactly?
Roger (Castiglion Fiorentino)
@Alista As she states, the service of talking openly about abortion as someone who has had one - in opposition to all the voices of the Christian Right, who never have.
maw808 (Honolulu)
@Roger ...or who have had one. It's no secret that evangelicals decry abortion right up to the moment they need one.
Mercury Descending (5:15 the Angels Have Gone)
Ms. Wolf’s performance at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner has been one of the great public acts of political courage since the 2016 election. We owe her, just as we owe Marie Yovanovitch, Fiona Hill, and the other brave State Department employees who testified before the House Intelligence Committee, a debt of gratitude. Thank you, Ms. Wolf.
Alexander Harrison (Wilton Manors, Fla.)
@Mercury Descending Why did her performance show political courage? Ms. Wolf is a member of the urban elite performing for the benefit of other urban elitists. Her mockery of SHS was unforgivable to those of us who believe in not taking advantage of others, in fair play.Re the diplomats who appeared before the House Committee, Yovanovitch bears a grudge against the chief of state and was not even present when the phone call was made,Hill looked foolish, inventing a narrative which could not be proven, and Taylor and Kent(Monsieur Papillon)--"when pressed to reveal what the High Crimes and Misdemeanors were, remained speechless. Sondheim,by using the verb "opine," or" presume" could only speculate. Observed that sexual misconduct of which Sondheim is also accused of has not been given the attention it deserves in the liberal press! Thus, why were they brave and why do they deserve our gratitude.? Was on the periphery of the world of diplomacy for decades as an LS interpreter and n,g.o relief worker in west African countries and dealt closely with public affairs officers from the embassy as well as from time to time with ambassador himself and only one impressed me with his professionalism, Chris Ross , ambassador to Algeria who spoke fluent French and Kabyle, language of the "montagnards,"whereas the rest lived as if they had never left the US,and immersion in local mannerisms, cultures, was shallow at best!
Nicole (Connecticut)
@Alexander Harrison You have your facts wrong:1) You mixed up Gordon Sondland, the ambassador, with Stephen Sondhem, the eminent composer and lyricist of musicals. 2) Yovanovitch did not claim to be on the call, nor did she need to be. She was testifying to provide evidence that Trump lied when he said he had no personal interest in extorting Urkraine. The circumstances surrounding his abrupt firing of her (when she would not do his bidding) are relevant to the case. As for the call, Trump could clarify the call by releasing the recording, but he refuses to do so. Why not? So far, he has released only a heavily redacted transcript. 3) Beyond the Fox news bubble of disinformation, the broad consensus is that Hill provided strong testimony (see the Washington Post, CNN). She was selected as Trump's top Russia expert, and she provided crucial information on Russia's intentions, based on her firsthand experience in the region. Contrary to your statement, the narrative has been proven in great detail, thanks in part to Sondland's testimony. Any gaps remaining are due to Trump not allowing witnesses to testify or answer subpoenas. 4) Taylor and Kent didn't weigh in on the question whether Trump's actions were misdemeanors because because, as Taylor said, they are not the judges; the Senators are. Surely you don't mean to spread disinformation.
maw808 (Honolulu)
@Alexander Harrison I didn't realize that Sondheim had created a libretto of impeachment witness testimony. How timely! What a musical genius!
Lisa (NYC)
Wolf's WHCD routine was absolutely brilliant and I have watched it over and over. I thought her Netflix series hadn't quiet arrived...to what and where I'm not sure but it wasn't quite baked. I still watched it though. The strength of her humor is that is it intimately personal without going for the throats of those at the brunt of her jokes. I'm old fashioned about talking personally about abortion but if someone's got to do it she may be one of the best to do so. Will be tuning in tomorrow. Brava Michelle.
Greenfish (New Jersey)
Michelle Wolf stuck it to the elites at the Correspondents dinner, without regard to their political affiliation. She was brilliant and spot on. We should all be grateful for her bravery.
Aristotle (SOCAL)
Michelle Wolf was first to confront our national bully. Not by taking the highroad, but by taking him head-on. She pushed back hard w/ a humor laced diatribe, and in doing so she acted on behalf of the meek and those of us too cultured to stand down our tormentor. Yes, she raised eyebrows, but she also raised consciousness as to the need for us to stand our ground and say with conviction – Enough!
Kit Kat (Massachusetts)
Love her! Go, go, go, Michelle! Hilarious and a truth teller...(that second part is, ahem, perhaps why some people can't handle it)...
DF (New York Ny)
I love Michelle Wolf and thought she crushed it at the Correspondents Dinner. Having sworn off Louie CK after his bit about the Parkland students I am grateful to have an irreverent, smart, and - most importantly - hilarious woman to watch!!
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
'the ashes of burnt facts' is a brilliantly Shakespearean coinage that Michelle Wolf deserves a Presidential Medal of Honor for. Rarely has such a pointed truth been spoken to such a craven, corrupt collection of rotting Republican flesh. Brava !
ReReDuce (Los Angeles)
The funniest and smartest comedian of our day! The only problem I have with her is that she puts her shoes on the sofa. Gross!
Suzanne Moniz (Providence)
It's a powerful artist that can stand and deliver their critique to those who hold the power. To incise, critique, make things a little uncomfortable. She made it clear that it is too difficult for those who don't think about anyone but themselves to face their reflection. She was brilliant.
Linda Hartman (West)
I love and adore Michelle Wolf's comedy. Her 2018 roast material was brilliant, funny and abrasive. Her lampoon of a holier-than-thou press was well deserved and totally on point. The press did indeed blow up Trump's presence and contributed to his election victory with the millions of dollars of totally free press coverage it gave him 24 hours a day. Unfortunately the press still gives Trump a free mouthpiece 24 hours a day. Of course the reaction to her performance was all shock with a large dose of sanctimony. We need Wolf and people like her. I am happy that she is working and prospering.
george eliot (annapolis, md)
Sixty years ago, Lenny Bruce was the best comedian in America. Back then, America ended east of the Hudson River. Hopefully its expanded a little since then.
Tom Scott (Santa Rosa, CA)
@george eliot Let's hope she doesn't go down the same path as Lenny. And no I'm not talking about the drug addiction, I'm talking about forgetting to be funny. Towards the end He got so caught up in issues and politics he forgot to be funny. I like when comedians are topical, but not if they can't also find the humor.
C Lee (TX)
I LOVED her Correspondent Dinner routine. Her observations and delivery were genius. Comedy isn't for the faint of heart. I don't think people think in their criticism of Michelle Wolf, that maybe, just maybe, it wasn't WHAT she said, but that fact that it came from HER lips. I look forward to watching her.
Dadof2 (NJ)
I saw her Correspondents' Dinner routine and didn't laugh once. I didn't think she was unnecessarily cruel, and have ZERO problem holding ANYONE who works for Trump up to really harsh ridicule. Her attack on Sarah Sanders didn't bother for its content, it bothered me by simply not being funny. I have the same problem with Sarah Silverman--she's just not funny. How do I know these comediennes aren't funny? I don't laugh. My politics parallel theirs, but I don't find them much funnier than I find any of Trump's jokes (the baseline for unfunny). As an aside, what Trump said that was funny was that he was against birth in the 9th month of pregnancy! Wolf is right: Her job is to be funny and I applaud her for that. I just wish she was.
C Lee (TX)
@Dadof2 Comedy is subjective. Like a movie. Like art. That you don't like Wolf or Silverman matters not - plenty of us love them.
SKS (Cincinnati)
@Dadof2 I totally agree, it was absolutely not funny in the least. Burnt ashes on Sander's eyes? Where is the wit? At any rate, she has no fear of being revered as a "folk hero" (why?) by this audience member. But, as another respondent among us remarks, it "matters not," as long as she has other admirers. Fine with me.
Dadof2 (NJ)
@C Lee To be fair, there are many of the current generation of comedians I don't find funny. And some I do. I think Samantha Bee is hysterical, as is Jon Oliver, and Jon Stewart, and admire Kate McKinnon's brilliant impersonations. I always detested Andrew Dice Clay, never found Adam Sandler funny, but thought George Carlin was the funniest man since Groucho Marx.
Aaron Stallings (Boston, MA)
“burns facts, and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye,” and “You guys love breaking news, and you did it, you broke it.” That is some of the most genius comedy I've ever heard. I gave up on her show after a few episodes but I love this woman. Can't wait to watch where she goes and hop on for the ride.
