Could Donald Jr. or Lara Trump Run for Office in New York, and Win?

@ Jay Emm: Neither are Long Islanders, in my opinion.
Lawrence (Washington D.C,)
Chip in money for a Trump primary, and watch them get slaughtered in the general like a dead elephant or a leopard, crocodile, Cape buffalo and more that they trophy hunted. The winner of the Democratic primary will have no problem raising money and volunteers.
Phil (NJ)
Staten Island elected Max Rose, Democrat. So, any decent Democrat should be able to beat a dirty Trump, even in Long Island.
Jay Emm (NYC)
To readers from far away places: Please understand that when this article refers to New York, it's talking about New York State, specifically an exurban district on Long Island. This is not about New York City. New Yorkers (that is, people from New York City) aren't stupid enough to elect anyone called Trump.
Gus (Hell's Kitchen, NYC)
Trump progeny, et al.: your name is "Mudd."
Barbara (NYC)
What a truly nauseating and horrifying (all at once) thought. Over the past few months these two nincompoops, (and D. Jr. even comes with the eye-candy professional escort for whose company he deserted his family) have clearly been trying to position themselves as intelligent beings with things to say that anyone might actually be interested in hearing. Please God, no,no, no.
Julie (Washington DC)
Oh, well if she's backed by the Koch operation that is trying to win favor with the trump administration cabal, she must be qualified for office.
Debbie (New Jersey)
For the first time I am happy to have left NY.
KJ (Tennessee)
The smartest thing Lara Trump ever did was marry a stupid man; a stupid man whose saving grace is money and connections. She's an awful person but no dummy, so she has potential in Republican politics. As for Junior, forget it. He has zero charisma and displays sort of a desperate demeanor, not a surprise for a man who knows he's a disappointment to his aggressive father and is still treated like a child. And when he notices Kimberly Guilfoyle is starting to look rough for her age, that savvy asset will disappear as well.
Jack Lemay (Upstate NY)
It's sad, and telling, that the Club for Growth and Breitbart are treated so cavalierly here. Both are radical, dangerous organizations. Calling Breitbart a "right wing web site" is like calling the Nazis in 1936 a "right wing political party", instead of a cancerous growth on the German body politic that would engulf the whole world, and cause the deaths of 40 million people through violence and starvation. Breitbart is a violent, racist, lying, misogynistic radical organ of the ultra-far right, which uses propaganda to influence minds and effect policy. Right now, there is untold suffering and violence on our southern border, which Breitbart gladly and happily caused, at least partly. What will it take for the NYT to start treating Breitbart like the violent, poisonous threat it actually is, instead of a curiosity? Does society actually have to crumble before our eye?
Steve (Seattle)
With the exception of trump enablers I can't imagine why any New Yorker could support a trump, any trump. Let them eat cake in Palm Beach.
B. (Brooklyn)
Well, that's Long Island, where shellfish snd mussels are dying thanks to warming waters.
xyz (nyc)
it's the same place that treats potential Black homeowners like 2nd class citizens, so the support for T. and his family is not surprising.
SLS (centennial, colorado)
Someone, help us get through this dark period in our history. I dont even want to think that people would vote for her.
East of Cicero (Chicago, IL)
I literally felt sick to my stomach after reading this. I knew it was a likely possibility that the Spawn of Trump would one day run for office, but this is the first time I've actually read about it, and it's happening so soon.
aimlowjoe (New York)
Now I know why the Bolsheviks wiped out the Romanov's.
troublemaker (New York)
No.
mariamsaunders (Toronto, Canada)
Oh please, dear God, NO!
N. Smith (New York City)
The thing most people fail to realize is that Peter King's district is a highly Republican and basically WHITE enclave on Long Island -- and that Long Island is NOT part of New York City. No Trump would ever be insane enough to try for a run here.
Zeke27 (New York)
Of course a trump could win a republican primary. These same voters think trump Sr. is an angel and never tells a lie. Hopefully the saner voters in a general election won't reward a a wannabe member of America's first royal family, no matter what her name is.
Todd (Watertown)
Unfortunately, too many Republican and "Independent" voters are eager to attend the Church of Trump, to kneel before him and his acolytes, to celebrate the grift, paying homage to the brand(s) signatures: lying, cheating, loudmouthed bombast and nepotism.
James (St. Paul, MN.)
The sad state of American politics in a nutshell: A relationship to the Sociopath / Grifter in Chief is sufficient to make some poorly-informed folks imagine they will be properly represented in Congress.
Jerry (New York)
This seems to be counter to the Trump name being removed from many of his properties in New York and around the country......who exactly is being polled for this ridiculous idea?
Phil (NJ)
Long Islanders! NOT Manhattanites.
Karen Lee (Washington, DC)
'“Nobody, other than the president himself, brings more star power, excitement and energy than members of the Trump family,” Nick Langworthy, the state Republican Party chairman, said in a statement. “It’s a special phenomenon that no other president has enjoyed, outside of maybe the Kennedys.”' Incredible.
Swac (Long Island)
@Karen Lee don't worry. There is not really a functioning GOP in New York State. No Republican has been elected to statewide office in over 20 years. The GOP has lost its tenuous majority in the state senate. Aside from a few areas which generate patronage, the GOP is failing bigly in New York. Nick Langworthy will be back at Starbucks a year from now.
Karen Lee (Washington, DC)
That Donald Trump, Jr. "attracts a younger contingent of Republicans to events" is concerning. I'd hoped that younger voters would be more likely to vote for anyone other than a Trump. Apparently, not so.
ogn (Uranus)
The major flaw with everything Republican is that they want voters to believe they can turn back time to a mythical past more white, less diverse, less inclusive, less crowded and complex, a time when a working man could support a family at a high standard of living, and do all of that by tax cuts, especially for the rich. They believe in surrender to authoritarianism, fundamentalism--white "Christian" nationalism.
Morgan (USA)
The last thing this country needs is another Trump in public office anywhere. It's time to get over the ridiculous idea that business people or other unqualified or inexperienced individuals are a good idea in running the country. It may sound good in theory, but it is having disastrous results. Politics is not and should not be entertainment.

I don't know how trustworthy that poll could be. When people don't know anything about the positions of any of the candidates, they tend to pick the one with the most familiar name. Also, the composition of the district changed in the last redistricting. It now includes Wyandanch and other areas that don't fit in with King's lily-white, conservative base.
Howard Eddy (Quebec)
The dynastic struggles among the Trump heirs and their sycophants make Game of Thrones look like Pollyanna.
C.P. (Riverside, CA)
Way to depress me this morning, NYTimes. Gee thanks.
AutumnLeaf (Manhattan)
A person who believes cow flatulence is the cause of global warming, who wants to ban air travel, and promised an income for refusing to work, won in NYC. Her first major action was to scare away billions of tax revenue and over 20k jobs (40k if you add the jobs that would have supported that many new workers), and she crowed about how great a win this was. She is the core leader of the Leftist Squad, pulling the Democratic party off the map as she pushes the party to the point of no return off the left fringe of reality. If she can scare away investors, jobs and tax revenue, then why not him? or her? they are pro business, and who knows, might bring back the missed opportunity she chased away. I say do it.
Henning (Germany)
A Trump may win the primary but all that matters is the real election and I think / hope that blue New York will not vote them. One Trump presidency is bad. A whole Trump political dynasty would be the end.

One can manipulate statistics for anything. Should this poll prove accurate, then reach for the Pepto Bismol. We're in for a bumpy night.
Tony (usa)
Certain species need to be kept contained in their original environment. If only, Long Island and certain other closely adjacent areas would simply agree to observing the Las Vegas mandate of "whatever happens there, stays there" - No one really cared about the Trump family, other than as an amusing gossip column item, until they managed their "Escape from New York".
Lily Iona (California)
Please! No more Trumps!
N. Smith (New York City)
What else would you expect from Breitbart? -- Anyway, Long Island is not part of New York City.
RS (Missouri)
My prediction is that when Donald steps down in 2024 he will run as VP alongside his daughter Ivanka, at least until she steps down effectively giving him a 3rd term.
Swac (Long Island)
@RS voters do realize that politicians are mere mortals. They are not going to live forever. We can do better than senior citizen fossils like Trump, Joe30330 Biden, Shorty Bloomberg, Crazy Bernie and Elizabeth "get me a beer" Warren. These old timers need to leave the stage now.
David Ohman (Durango, Colorado)
There is no question, the Trump name translates into greater fortunes for the already-wealthy. But this is a narrow view. The Trump brand is tanking at most of his existing properties. Even residents at Trump Tower in Manhattan clamour to remove the Trump name from the building as their own equity has declined owing to Trump's criminality while in office. Ok, so maybe I am in wishful-thinking mode but, if Trump is ousted, either through impeachment (I know that's a stretch) or at the ballot box next year, he will be dealing with a host of criminal charges from the Southern District of NY, to name one venue. If Trump avoids incarceration, he may not escape a sharp drop in his net worth, given how many of his resorts are losing vast sums of money. His hotel in Chicago; his hotel in D.C.; Doral; his golf resort in Ireland, and another project in Panama. But here's the thing: Trump could have continued his life of greed and corruption in a private life had he NOT entered the GOP 2016 primaries. Insiders know he had not planned to win. And hardly anyone thought he would win. After all, it was all a branding campaign to advance his business interests after the election. What seemed nothing more than a reckless campaign of bullying and childish name calling and street thuggery — with conspiracy theories (such as the accusation that Ted Cruz's father was a co-conspirator in the assassination of JFK) — Trump raced past his opponents. Now he's OUR mob boss run amok.
N. Smith (New York City)
@David Ohman No. He's YOUR mob boss run amok!
Marge Keller (Midwest)
"In some Republican circles, the notion of President Trump’s children running for political office is not only a parlor game — it’s a matter of finding the right opportunity for the right Trump." That sentence is truly alarming - "finding the right opportunity for the right Trump." Geez - is this what this country has to look forward to? Trump's relatives capitalizing on his name? No experience needed or perhaps, wanted. I feel as if this nightmare will never end.
Chris Hill (Durham, NC)
@Marge Keller Oh, agreed. It will not be the end when 45 leaves office. The dishonesty, evil, and destruction he's foisted on Americans take generations to undo.
MG (PA)
@Marge Keller Good comment and I’m struggling these days with the prospect of more and more damage from their pere, the deranged leader of radical Republicanism. I’ve up to a point regarded the Trump progeny, except for the smug Ivanka, as tragic victims of their father’s unfitness as a parent and their mothers’ unwillingness, except for Marla, to stand up for them. Now, if this happens, I will have to change that view and realize the American people are the victims of all of them, except so far Tiffany and Barron. I shall focus on what I am thankful for, like adult children who turned out well.
RS (Missouri)
@Marge Keller is that not what Hunter Biden just got caught doing? Capitalizing on his fathers name. GEEZ the hypocrisy is ripe. Please understand that statements like this are the reason why Republicans will continue to win and the Coastal Elites will not be able to figure out why.
TrumpsGOPsucks (Washington State)
If the voters in New York's 2nd Congressional District vote in a Trump, they are going to get what they deserve - a whole lot of nothing.
Brian (Phoenix, AZ)
Look at the district they're talking about.
BTO (Somerset, MA)
And I thought the people on Long Island where smarter then that.
Lynn Scott (CT)
But Biden’s son is trading on his father’s fame. I’ve never seen a better example of the pot calling the kettle black.
N. Smith (New York City)
@Lynn Scott And what about Ivanka, Jared Kushner and Don Jr.? Your sense of omission is on full display.
Sam (Los Angeles)
@Lynn Scott well Lynn the orange doesn't fall from the tree. look at how every accusaion by POTUS against someone turns out to be true about himself or an associate? (see Stone, Roger originator of "lock her up")
Erik van Dort (Palm Springs)
Not surprising, given that oligarch Jimmy Finkelstein of The Hill fame lives there among white supremacists and other oligarchs.
Andrew (Philadelphia)
Please spare us. One has been bad enough.
H. Savage (Maine)
Because republicans haven’t had enough trump chaos and dim-wittery?
MIMA (heartsny)
Poor New York! Even the thought of anymore Trump’s in office anywhere is nauseating.
Ronnie (Santa Cruz, CA)
Will no one rid us of this accursed family? NO MORE DYNASTIES!
Bruno (NY)
They'll hopefully be in jail by then. Lock them all up!
pwc (Midwest USA)
This must be a Saturday Night Live skit. Only explanation.
Adrienne (New York)
You can't be serious.
Hortencia (Charlottesville)
Good Lord have mercy! Will we ever be rid of the Trump pestilence!?
Gerry (St. Petersburg Florida)
Politically speaking, New Yorkers have proven that they are no smarter than anywhere else in America. And there are some pretty politically stupid places in America. I live in one of them.
N. Smith (New York City)
@Gerry We were smart enough to know NOT to vote for Donald Trump. Can you say the same?
Mia Oberlink (NYC)
Never happen.
Concerned (Brookline MA)
Fool me once...Fool me three times and I’m your typical Trump supporter.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Oh boy, Junior or daughter-in-law Trump possibly running for office. That's the ticket. That's exactly what this country needs - more Trumps in public office.
Justice (NY)
I think we need some kind of empathy testing to qualify for voting. Like, is it still a child in a cage if it isn't your child, for instance? If you can't care, no voting for you.
Aron (92119)
Degradation of the GOP = full speed ahead. Good luck with that.
Paul (California)
This article is a useful reality check for readers of the NYT, many of whom are convinced that everyone who lives in a blue state hates Trump with a passion...like they do.
Brian (Phoenix, AZ)
@Paul He and all of his supporters are a danger to our country. Why shouldn't we dislike them intensely? Hate is a bit strong for me, though. I see most hate coming from the political right. That said, every State, red and blue, has pockets of the other, so you are not hinting at anything that we had not already known.
Icantdrive45 (Woodbine, MD)
Oh, dear goddess. Say it ain’t so. V.O.T.E.
Billy (The woods are lovely, dark and deep.)
Donald Duck might poll well also but it's nothing to quack about.
Lex (The Netherlands)
Please no! I cant cope with article, after article, after article about somebody with that last name....
kim (nyc)
Not happening.
Antoine (Taos, NM)
God help us now.
1 of 5 (Borg Space)
corrupt is as corrupt does
MaryM (CA)
Gross! That's it. That's my comment, reflecting the visceral revulsion I feel at the thought of these grifters splintering off to pollute even further our Democracy.
J. Taylor (Los Angeles)
Early polling in open seats is almost always a gauge of name recognition. This is especially true in races where information is limited. This article should have been better researched and included some basic insights from a political consultant. Lara Trump shouldn't be celebrating anything just yet.
Sammy (Samuel)
Long Island and their continued fascination and admiration for mob bosses and their families. In the words of an infamous mob boss - “sad”
Daniel Mozes (NYC)
She polled 30% against whom? Meaningless poll. Read Jill Lepore, "These Truths" about polls. Remember the polls about the 2016 election. But this one's easy. A poll about someone running against no one is not real.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Congressman Schiff needs to summon Junior Trump to testify at the Impeachment Hearing. He appears to have been a witness to or direct participant in virtually every piece of skulduggery and/or criminality perpetrated during his father’s calamitous Presidency. And he is a man who, G-d forbid, stands a very good chance of being the Republican Party’s nominee for President in 2024, if not next year.
Suiseman (CT)
Long Island? Perfect place for them. When I was in banking, my national manager warned me that LI was the fraud capital of the US. The arrogance of these trump people is remarkable.
NMY (NJ)
This is probably the most depressing thing I've read all week. This joke of a family should not be given any more chances to ruin America, even a tiny slice of it on Long Island.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
The notion of possibly Donald Jr. or Lara Trump running for office in New York is scary in its own right. But winning too? Oh dear me. Hasn't the old man done enough damage and harm to the great State of New York already without adding the young-ins to the mix?
Steve55 (NYC)
A Trump family member candidacy in any NY congressional district would rub "SALT" into the wounds of the citizens of New York who will be paying for DJT's tax gift to the 1% for years to come.
Somewhere in NY (NY)
John Jay LaValle, the politician who could not win the mayor's race in the small Long Island Village of Port Jefferson.
AACNY (New York)
Compared to the likes of AOC, they should be a shoo-in.
Steve (Sonora, CA)
Seriously? Really? One begins to think that the US deserves what it has gotten ...
Lynn (New York)
Here is a recent quote demonstrating that a Lara Trump would depend upon the heartless and uninformed to vote Republican on Fox News, when asked about Trump’s decision to abandon our Kurdish allies to be slaughtered Syria: “I think we should start with the fact that if you asked the average American out there, I think they would have to google, ‘Who are the Kurds?’ ”"
kcl (Chevy Chase, MD)
@Lynn any American adult who doesn't know who the Kurds are is not qualified for ANY elective office, much less a Congressional Representative.
Michael Livingston’s (Cheltenham PA)
The Clintons looked pretty good in early polls, too.
Grace (Bronx)
She's far better qualified than Joe Kennedy III in Massachusetts.
TrumpsGOPsucks (Washington State)
@Grace And what is it that qualifies her? She has no experience in governing, and we have seen how that has worked out with her father in law.
kcl (Chevy Chase, MD)
@Grace Why? What has she done professionally that makes her more qualified than Joe Kennedy III. Please be specific.
Merrill R. Frank (Jackson Heights NYC)
Joe Kennedy at least has a record of public service. He did a stint in the Peace Corp and was a prosecutor. For all their flaws at least the family dynasties of Kennedy, Bush and the Roosevelt’s as well as the McCain family have some ethos of public service. Obama’s grandfather and uncle served honorably during WWII. No member of the Trump family going back to when Trumps grandfather evading the draft in Germany has ever served in uniform. Don Jr. had it tough when he griped about his families sacrifice while touring Arlington National cemetery. The 1978 battle of the STD’s at Studio 54 must have been rough on poor Donald.
Blank (Venice)
It is easy to fool the American electorate for a while. I state the obvious.
Angel (NYC)
NYC hates the Trumps and no, none of them will be elected there.
Bill Camarda (Ramsey, NJ)
So they didn't release the numbers on how she'd do in November after she wins the GOP primary. Either the Club for Growth doesn't want you to know those numbers, or they deliberately avoided collecting them because they know what they would show.
Bill Camarda (Ramsey, NJ)
@Bill Camarda Any Trump would win any Republican primary practically anywhere, because Trumps are what Republican voters want. That's not exactly stunning news. Tell me how they'll do when ALL voters get a say.
LIChef (East Coast)
This is no surprise, given that there are portions of Long Island still embracing overtly corrupt politicians and a GOP machine that has done severe damage to the region over the past few decades. Nepotism and patronage jobs are out of control, leading to higher taxes, lower quality of services and ignorant leadership that has absolutely no vision for future growth. Racism is still alive and well there, as evidenced by a recent local newspaper series on steering by real estate agents. Long Island had much greater potential, but it has been exploited and ruined by dirty Republican politics. So, yes, any Trump should find a comfortable and welcoming home in this environment.
Patrick (LI,NY)
How about we finish dealing with the corruption of Trump Sr. before we go rewarding his offspring with Long Island Fiefdoms. Long Island needs politicians that know Long Island, the people and the problems. Peter King did well for Long Island because this is where he is from, this is where he grew up and he took very good care of his constituents. Peter King understood how to work with people from ALL political affiliations. Long Island does not need Fly-over politicians whose only familiarity with the locale is what they see as they travel from the heliport in Manhattan to their house in the Hamptons. Peter King is an Islander. Lee Zeldin is an Islander. There are enough people on the Island, who are Islanders, for both the political parties can draft to run. We don't need "Brand Name" politicians we need people that will work for the people of Long Island.
Zeke27 (New York)
@Patrick I give credit to anyone who remains on the Island. Why they choose to live in America's parking lot sitting in stationary cars for hours at a time escapes me.
Angela (Farmingdale, NY)
@Patrick no no no. Pete King hasn't met with people in his district for years! Totally non-responsive. Happy to see him go finally.
Sandra (NY)
I live in the second congressional district and the prospect of a Trump as my representative is so very depressing. We're finally getting rid of King, and a Trump would be a move in the wrong direction. I can tell you this, however: the democratic voters of this district are motivated. We almost managed to unseat King in 2018 and any Trump as the republican candidate would galvanize both democrats and independents. A Trump candidacy might actually help us to finally flip this district.
Kan (Upstate)
Sandra, here’s hoping your district will flip and elect a democrat. Keeping my fingers crossed and hopes high that sanity will prevail. The idea that these Trump mediocrities think they can enter politics... absolutely sickening.
Olenska (New England)
@Sandra : I wish you the best of luck. Peter King is a blight on Congress for many reasons, but particularly for his tough, hard-line stance on immigration - which applies, however, to everyone except the Irish, for whom he has consistently fought for visa preferences and set-asides. At what point is King's "ethnic pride" called by its real name: racism? To be clear: I am a granddaughter of Irish emigrants; a dual citizen; and graduate of an Irish university. I am proud of my heritage - in an entirely unsentimental way. I won't, however, see fairness debased by hypocrisy.
JD Athey (Oregon)
@Kan I agree. The Trump children, like their father, know nothing of the world or any job, but are arrogant enough to believe their own hype.
Manny (Montana)
What is her experience besides ‘senior’ staff on the dad in law’s re-election campaign?
C Wolfe (Bloomington IN)
No one associated with the Trump family is remotely qualified for political office. From my perspective in "flyover country," the only good thing that could come out of electing a Trump to a House seat is that maybe New Yorkers would stop blaming the rest of the country for Trumpism. The current occupant of the White House was spawned in what I understand to be the particular sewer of NY real estate, and if NY sends another Trump to national office, I will really be over the smug superiority of a certain coterie of NY-based NYT commenters who enjoy dismissing Midwesterners monolithically as a bunch of Trump-voting knuckle-draggers.
Dbell48 (Owasco NY)
@C Wolfe I wholeheartedly agree....and I'm a New Yorker. Each one of them is supremely unqualified in every way imaginable.
WF (here and there ⁰)
Will the nightmare never end?
Jsbliv (San Diego)
Who would vote for Jr., much less stand to listen to his blather? NY can’t be so hard up for candidates that the know-nothing offspring of the worst president in history has a chance to be elected!?
EFM (Brooklyn, NY)
As if the country didn't already have enough problems. Just the idea makes me want to throw up.
ExPatMX (Ajijic, Jalisco Mexico)
What a horrible vision to place in my head so early in the day.
James R. Filyaw (Ft. Smith, Arkansas)
Does Devin Nunes really need a bookend?
Cycledoc (Lynden, Wa)
Parts of Long Island have lost their collective minds.
Somewhere in NY (NY)
@Cycledoc Sadly it's Trump country on much of Long Island. Very white supremacy among many.
Charlotte (New Jersey)
The Banana Republic of America is in full swing I see. Good thing I read this on an empty stomach.
A Cynic (None of your business)
Ivanka for president! 2024 is not too far away.
cheryl (yorktown)
Can't read this. Too awful to com ntmeplat. However, the writer, and publisher, should note: every article written about the possibility actually puts this out there as a possibility, and ups the odds of it happening. When you provide the advertising, that is what happens . . .
Len319 (New Jersey)
Why don't we all agree: no more Trumps or Clintons. Enough already.
Norville T. Johnstone (New York)
There must have been heart palpitations and people breaking out in a cold sweat in the NY Times offices as news spread that an article like this was going to be published. I don't think there is much here but I did get a chuckle at the comments section here. The snowflakes would be beside themselves if the Trumps get a foothold in politics. The saddest part is that the Dems are bending over backwards to hand him this next election. They had years to find an appealing candidate but look what they came up with so far. Instead of the field getting narrower it's getting wider. If running Hillary got us Trump can you imagine what we will get if say a Warren or Bernie like candidate gets the nod in the future/ Scary thought.
AACNY (New York)
@Norville T. Johnstone Blame the progressives. They refuse to support a candidate who can actually win.
Aron (92119)
@Norville T. Johnstone I'm a liberal Dem and I don't disagree with last two para's
Walter Ingram (Western MD)
Maybe in SC, or Mississippi, but not NY.
JW (Colorado)
What is wrong with people? This entire family is probably corrupt, as the father certainly is and all of his children are apparently just like him. What on earth is wrong with people? Why do they vote for liars who defraud even veterans?
SML (Suburban Boston, MA)
There are nasty little Trump-name-venerating pockets of voters all around the suburbs and hinterlands (this includes Staten Island), but in NYS what they do and who they choose hardly matters.
gf (Ireland)
I'm still wondering why they vote for the climate change denier - Lee Zeldin - when LI is slowly going under water. Wake up, people!
Reva Cooper (Nyc)
Yes, they’d have a wonderful time holding office anywhere near New York City: they’d be hounded incessantly by protesters and get completely negative press, probably frequently run for cover to Mar A Lago.
Olenska (New England)
Would this be the same Lara Trump who, addressing the 800,000 Federal employees about to miss a second paycheck during the recent government shutdown, said: "But this is so much bigger than any one person. It is a little bit of pain but it's going to be for the future of our country. And their children and their grandchildren and generations after them will thank them for their sacrifice right now. I know it's hard. I know they have bills to pay, they have mortgages, they have rents that are due, but the president is trying every single day to come up with a good solution here. The reality is it's been something that has gone on for too long and been unaddressed ― our immigration problem. If we do nothing right now it's never going to get fixed. This is our one opportunity." Translation: "Let them eat cake!" There's a winning campaign slogan if I've ever heard one.
Frank Casa (Durham)
Sure, just choose the reddest district you can find and, presto, you have a Trump ready to declare that he/she won the largest landslide ever and the world loves him/her. Ready to join the rest of Republicans who are willing to upend democracy for the sake of denying health care for the poor, reproductive rights to women and to give away billions to the wealthy. Welcome to the United Banana Republic of America!
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
Are people legally deemed guilty of self-enrichment and defrauding the public (eg, Donald J. Trump Charitable Foundation) by a court of law in the state where they're running for office eligible? Well, if we end up with another 4 years of Dirty Donald Sr., there's no telling if we'll even end up having an election, he'll just make an edict and that will be that.
Bruce Savin (Montecito)
The Trumps are a gift that will keep on giving until we lock them all up.
pajaritomt (New Mexico)
@Bruce Savin Lock them up! Lock them up!
mjbarr (Burdett, NY)
One Trump in politics is one Trump too many.
GUANNA (New England)
Another political dynasty, not Kennedy, more like the Long of Louisiana dynasty.
pajaritomt (New Mexico)
@GUANNA Not like the Longs of Louisiana. They actually gave things to the people which is why they won at the ballot box. And it is also why Huey Long was assassinated. The longs served the people. Earl, Huey Long's brother was wacko toward the end, but they build roads, bridges and hospitals all over Louisiana. Charity Hospital in New Orleans gave low cost or free health care to poor people in New Orleans and would still be doing so except for being seriously damaged in Hurricane Katrina. The Trumps are not like the Longs.
PP (ILL)
Please no. Why is the GOP pushing this corrupt hedonistic family into our national politics? It’s not just Trump the man that is the problem but the entire GOP.
CW (Left Coast)
Comparing the Trumps to the Kennedys is like comparing the Kardashians to the House of Windsor. There is no comparison.
SR (New York)
The idea of Trump Jr. running for mayor is hilarious. The Trumps are detested in every borough of NYC except Staten Island and segments of Bklyn. He would be demolished if he was arrogant enough to try.
James (Savannah)
If any Trump wins anything, ever again, humanity will have jumped the shark.
BK (Chicago)
A Republican Primary in New York is not a general election campaign in metropolitan NY. Surely you jest.
Impedimentus (Nuuk,Greenland)
Electing another Trump. Is there no limit to human insanity? I'm starting to believe there is something in the water.

@Impedimentus There is.
Michael McDaniel (WNY)
The only thing worse than electing a Trump-by-birth is electing someone who is a Trump by choice.
John MD (NJ)
Please, please let her run. And Dems, just pick a moderately intelligent and moral opponent for her.
SGK (Austin Area)
I was born in Kansas, moved to Wyoming, then to Oklahoma. Taught in Illinois, moved to Georgia, now in Texas. In other words, I have no stake in Long Island. Love visiting Manhattan, have been to other boroughs of NYC. However: the idea of one more Trump holding office in the United States, anywhere in the United States, would lead me to consider relocating to, say, the Shetland Islands, a fishing village in Norway, or even that bus stop in New Mexico, where a group of young studs decades ago threatened to go home, retrieve their guns, and return to perform the rites and rights of the Second Amendment on me because I dressed like a hippie.
Austin Ouellette (Denver, CO)
At this point the only conclusion I can draw from the last 4 years, is that everyone believes 1984, Slaughter-House Five, Catch-22, Faust, and every other major work highlighting the existential threat that the forces of corruption pose to humanity, was not a warning but they are road maps. At this point, I can only surmise that wealthy people have read those works, and thought not “WOW, that’s horrible, we should do everything we can to avoid that,” but they thought “WOW, what a great idea!” I wake up many days, and I just want to run around the city plastering Martin Niemöller‘s poem to the front door of every building. Other days I don’t even want to get out of bed. And that’s the point of all of this. The wealthy people of America quite literally want to crush the will to live of the other citizens who possess less means. It’s the only way to logically explain their collective actions.
Angela (Farmingdale, NY)
@Austin Ouellette... insight from an old friend who supports republicans.. his investments earned 15% this year. That seems to be all they care about.
Adam (Tallahassee)
Well, it would be the first job for any one of the three to come with expectations. I suspect that will be a rude awakening for the silver spoon trio.
Molly C (CA)
I don’t understand why this is getting any attention. One of the reasons Trump won was because the media gave him so much press. If we start in on the juniors, especially with such a minor poll in a district where Ms. Trump doesn’t live, aren’t we repeating the same cycle? If anything, it shouldn’t be in the “Top Stories” section. We are overwhelmed with Trumpism as it is.
Scott (California)
The Trump brand may still hold sway in polls, but like Nixon, that will evaporate after he resigns. And, he will resign. It’s just a matter of time.
Midwest (Reader)
The Trumps give hope to the rest of us. You really can be anything you want to be even if you are raised in an environment devoid of such basic necessities as a moral compass, intellectual curiosity and empathy. My write in vote for the next election will be: Amoeba.
Bucketomeat (The Zone)
@Midwest I’d vote for animals in the clouds first.
Enough Already (Mendocino County, CA)
Think positive. Think Hong Kong! Respond to intolerance and hate by actually getting out and doing something in response. That’s the new paradigm. Democracy works, but not by itself.
NYC (New York)
Well, why not? Nepotism has always been part of politics, in all parties. How many of our elected officials are sons and daughters of, grandchildren of? It’s a popularity contest and it’s always been easier when you have granny’s Christmas card list to get you started.
Enough Already (Mendocino County, CA)
Think positive. Think Hong Kong! Respond to intolerance and hate by actually doing something in response. That’s the new paradigm. Democracy works, but not by itself.
Frank (South Orange)
New York has always been kind to carpetbaggers. Bobby Kennedy and Hillary Clinton were out-of-staters who chose to run in NY. I suppose it's not inconceivable that a Trump would run in a county in which they have never paid a cent in taxes. Sadly, it's just New York politics.
Larry (New York)
There are many Long Islanders who want to keep Long Island the way it was and do not look towards the future. President Trump has exasperated this feeling and it is fracturing our community. A Trump candidate would supercharge this race and may do irreparable damage within our community. A community where the Trump's have no home base and would be carpetbaggers. I can only hope they look elsewhere.
GUANNA (New England)
@Larry A poll by a funded by conservatives. Is is really accurate or were they paid to obtain those results.
Larry (New York)
@GUANNA I can only hope these results are not accurate and the Trump's decide to not run in my district. Donald Trump as President is damaging to the community and this would exasperate the damage already done.
Patrick (LI,NY)
@GUANNA More than likely they polled the people at the fund raiser.
willw (CT)
I love the intensity of the run, but I don't know if I would like the actual work involved if I got the job. Would you hire someone who talked like that?
kcl (Chevy Chase, MD)
@willw "Intensity of the run" = lot of attention on an already narcissistic person. Means nothing about competence.
DJ (Tempe, AZ)
Presumably, to run for congress one must be a resident of the district that one will be representing. As a representative one would hope that one's candidate would know the particular problems faced in the district. A Trump suddenly moving to a district for political expediency would be yet another example of the fraud and grifting that they foist on the American public.
jfdenver (Denver)
@DJ No. You only need to be a resident of the state; whether they could actually get elected is another issue. NYers across the State are paying more in taxes due to the elimination of the SALT deduction. It is hard to see how they could win.
CLP (Meeteetse Wyoming)
@DJ cf. Liz Cheney
A New Yorker (New York)
To add some context: This is a swing district held by an incumbent Republican (Peter King). It's been Republican since it was redistricted in 2012. Obama won it in 2012: 52% - 47% Trump won it in 2016: 53% - 44%. In 2013 it went to the incumbent Republican 53% to 47% (in a very good year for Democrats).
Mia Oberlink (NYC)
@A New Yorker Why do you think Peter King is not running again?
David (Florida)
@Mia Oberlink He publicly announced he is not running again a few weeks ago....
Swac (Long Island)
@Mia Oberlink Because Pete is 75 years old. The GOP has little chance to recapture the House majority, and Pete's generous pension and medical insurance long ago vested. Additionally his daughter who was expected to run for the seat recently moved to North Carolina with her family.
MJG (Valley Stream)
There is no way Donald will share the spotlight with anyone else, even his kids. After he was elected, Don Jr. was mentioned as a potential GOP candidate for NYC mayor. When asked about it, the President said that Don isn't running for anything, and closed the conversation. You want to say in Trump's good graces you focus on him and only him.
Georgina (New York)
I'm not in favor of dynasties in the American context--but contrary the quoted Republican spokesman, certainly not only the Kennedys, but Barbara, Jeb, and George W. Bush, Al Gore, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, the Roosevelts, and more have been far more durable and impactful on American public life than any putative Trump family candidate.
Concordata (Boston)
@Georgina - I agree, same thing occurred to me. Trumps will NEVER do anything for the greater good unless they benefit first and most. And even then, that’s a big If.
Marvant Duhon (Bloomington Indiana)
I believe that Republican New Yorkers could swoon over these Trump relatives. I doubt, and hope, they would be unable to compete in real world general elections there.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
A poll shows that Lara Trump's popularity is up by more than 30 points? Seriously? I was under the impression that New York was done with the Trump name - regardless. And what exactly is her allure to these voters? Or is this just a beefed up poll by "Club for Growth" to give the voter the impression that there truly is an earnest interest in a Trump family member running for office in New York. How frightening and alarming for New York.
KC (Okla)
@Marge Keller RNC traded 60K of don jr IIs books for 45% points. Polling company can then "re sell" the books for a nifty 500% profit in the line of donations for some little donald somewhere down the line. MAGA
Midwest (Reader)
@Marge Keller "I was under the impression that New York was done with the Trump name - regardless." I think you were referring to the Clinton name (and Trump as well).
David Ohman (Durango, Colorado)
@Marge Keller Thank you, Marge. This reminds me of how Bush43 destroyed his family's political future. Jeb was the presumed nominee until Trump lied and bullied his way from a near-zero approval rating, to GOP nomination in 2016. And here is my theory: The American people have tired of dynasty politics, with succeeding family members of past presidents running for POTUS. I also believe, despite her 3.5 million popular vote advantage over Trump, it was an unfortunate track record of right-wing attacks on her, and Bill, that lost the Electoral College. Which is to say, DJT has pretty much destroyed the Trump brand he built with his shadow company, The Trump Organization, through greed-driven graft and corruption. No one cared about the investors he stole from. They knew who they were dealing with and still dove into his swamp. Thus, the Trump children are dilussional if they believe they will politically survive any better than anyone in the Bush family today. Grifting is in the Trump DNA. Marrying into the Trump family carries with it a high-risk future.
Terry M (Syracuse, New York)
This article is really not telling the entire story at all. Winning a GOP primary in New York State means nothing because the NYS GOP cannot win most offices in New York State now except for some isolated districts of upstate New York. The recent 2017 and 2016 elections in New York wiped out more GOP office holders. Just ask Rep. Nan Hayworth , Rep. Gloria Tenney, Rep. John Faso or County Exec Rob Astorino. Could the Trumps run in New York on a state wide level? Of course not. And they know that. This article is not analyzing the total issue of being electable in November not some right wing primary in June when 7% ( if that) vote. The loss of a broad based two party system is a dangerous threat to our civic comity and the essential elements of compromise to achieve consensus. The GOP in New York State has chosen to adopt extreme right wing views and they are no longer a broad based electoral party state wide or nationally.
Bob R (Portland)
"Mr. Trump has repeatedly been floated by supporters as a potential future candidate for president," In whose imagination?
Chris Hill (Durham, NC)
@Bob R What if it was Roger Stone's? We never dreamed a Trump presidency could come to be, yet here we are.
kcl (Chevy Chase, MD)
@Bob R can you imagine this vapid, empty suit trust fund baby running for City Council, much less President? He would be eviscerated. Their narcissistic personalities preclude self awareness, a quality none of them will ever have. I think the country has learned a lesson about unqualified, mean spirited people who openly court racist, misogynistic and xenophobic views and policies. Americans are ready for a candidate of integrity, substance and experience for our next POTUS.
dugggggg (nyc)
I look forward to anyone who runs for office to be more vetted than the President was. Turns out he's not quite sane, and I'm not exaggerating.
Bernard Bonn (SUDBURY Ma)
@dugggggg Unfortunately we don't have a sanity test for the candidates. A complete mental and physical exam should be a requirement for the job of President.
pajaritomt (New Mexico)
@Bernard Bonn And the examiners should not be chosen by the candidate.
The Buddy (Astoria, NY)
If we are to consider this candidacy, New Yorkers will expect clear evidence of non self dealing, as well as financial transparency. We are not the undemanding base he may be accustomed to.
Tim (New York NY)
Criminal Organization. They should all be in jail. But you can buy justice in the USA and they and others white collar criminals have skated around jail because they have money, that is the deal.
Sally (New Orleans)
Less press, please. One dinky $3,000 poll doesn't lend credibility or newsworthiness to any person or organization cited in this article. Remember all the gratis coverage bestowed on The Donald?!
BLH (NJ)
@Sally Absolutely, this just adds to the Trump-dynasty myth. I wish MSM would just stop with the polls and these random stories about the Trump children - if it's possible they have less talent(?) than their father. It really is harmful to present this as a serious story.
JH (Geneva)
I disagree that we need less coverage of stories like this. In fact, we need more. The public needs to know the threat posed by this crime family, and be motivated to stay engaged in our political process and VOTE to ensure they do not gain the power they seek. In this way the MSM serves the same role as your doctor who constantly hectors you about losing the weight, watching the diet, quitting smoking, getting more exercise, etc., if you want to live longer. Information is power, but one cannot use it if one does not have it. So please, more and more stories about trump, his family, his enablers.
say what (NY,NY)
I'd like to think that NYers have better taste.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
@say what . . . and better sense!
Yamil Marrero (Columbus, Ohio)
My mom knows how to handle herself. She is good with people. No, she wouldn’t be a good congresswoman.
RH (San Diego)
Trump's initiatives of placing members of his family in politics has been a "dynasty in progress" for sometime. The speeches...book deals..and all the "support" from Fox "news" points in that direction. The sooner the public understands the Trump family is a criminal enterprise with little regard for the foundations of American ideals..the sooner Trump et al hits the streets. I would bet there will be indictments for a number of items once Trump is forced from office by the voters or the Congress..
Bernard Bonn (SUDBURY Ma)
@RH I anticipate that just before leaving office (fingers crossed that he goes quietly) trump pardons his family and anyone else Barr can think of (remember his time with HW Bush) then resigns so pence can pardon him.
MarcS (Brooklyn)
@Bernard Bonn He can't be pardoned for state crimes.
Bernard Bonn (SUDBURY Ma)
@MarcS True enough.
ten organic farms (NJ)
No wonder the poll cost only $3,000.00 - the Club for Growth provided the results up front. A political unknown from Manhattan winning a Long Island district that typifies the suburban flight from Trump? I like the way Mr. Lazio answers the questions about Ms. Trump as if he were being deposed. The entire Trump "dynasty" (were the Borgias a dynasty?) is begging to be defeated by a centrist Democratic coalition led by women, immigrants and people of ALL colors, and any thinking white men not living lives of despair.
Steve (NY)
Here's a thought-- maybe she'd do a good job. And for those who don't like the idea, run some one who would beat her. Got the idea? Why is this suddenly such a hard concept for Americans taught our democratic principles and processes (I think it was in 7th or 8th grade, generally) to fathom?
DennisMcG (Boston)
@Steve Definitely. I mean, she went to culinary school and was a producer on a TV show that's the equivalent of a checkout aisle tabloid, a gig I'm sure she gained on her own merit no less. With qualifications like those how could she not succeed?
AD (NY)
@Steve Maybe she would do a good job, but that is not why Republicans would vote for her. As Rep. King said, the Trump name is magic for voters in his district. I'm guessing that those polled may know absolutely nothing about her, yet they would overwhelming support her -- simply because she is called "Trump." And here's why, as you ask, it is "such a hard concept for Americans taught our democratic principles and processes to fathom." Donald Trump has trashed those principles and processes a thousand times -- with thousands of bare-faced lies, mean-spirited attacks on anyone who dares to disagree him (particularly women and people of color), disregard for the United States Constitution (see the Emoluments clause et al.), implicit advocacy of white supremacy (see Charlottesville), betrayal of close allies (Kurds et al.), denigration of some of our most distinguished veterans (eg. John McCain), and the disgusting outright mockery of disabled persons (in particular, those with cerebral palsy). Tha is what the Trump name stands for and that why I, an American well-schooled in democratic principles and processes, not only find this "such a hard concept to fathom," but find myself terribly saddened that so many of my fellow citizens would eagerly vote for such a name.
susan (nyc)
@Steve "Taught out democratic principles and processes...." Perhaps you should forward your comment to Donald Trump and his minions. Your comment is ironic at best.
stevevelo (Milwaukee, WI)
Hmmmmmm, the Comments seem to reveal a lot of readers who find this “depressing”. In another article, some comments indicate that overoptimism about a political turnaround ignores the polls indicating Trump’s support in the Midwestern swing states (I live in one) is fairly solid. A third article indicates that Britian’s Labour Party support my be eroding in the North of England. Recent national polls indicate that US voters are not supporting the removal of the President. Perhaps the writers and political analysts in a large news organization headquartered on the west side of Midtown Manhattan are not as tuned into things as they should be (despite being incredibly “woke”).
Patricia (Tempe AZ via Philadelphia PA)
@stevevelo On the other hand, Steverino, they do seem to know the difference between grifter and gifted. And it is a national disgrace that so many US citizens have such horrendous reading comprehension scores - not to mention the loss of some basic human essentials. Empathy comes to mind, followed by appreciation for intellectual pursuit and ability to discern truth from fiction. But, you go, guy. A country established upon fraud....eh.
Demetroula (Cornwall, UK)
The idea of Trump's kids running for office -- and possibly winning -- is even more depressing than reading today's op-ed piece advising folks to turn off their phones for Thanksgiving. How I miss the days when most candidates earned the right to run for high office -- and people actually talked to each other.
IM455 (Arlington, Virginia)
@Demetroula You have to remember that the poll was of Republican-registered voters for the primary. There was no poll done to indicate how the Trumps would do in the general election against a Democrat. I think that the result might be highly different. I get the sneaking suspicion that Peter King's retirement has more to do with his own polling and the fact that it probably showed him, at best, neck-and-neck with a generic Democrat. He's getting out because he doesn't want to leave office through defeat.
SLY3 (parts unknown)
@Demetroula testing the waters to campaign is a fundraising move. opening up a campaign is a fundraising move. securing a congressional seat means the cycle of fundraising continues, just with a new title on the business card. it's all about collecting maximum donor money. the Citizens United decision MUST be overturned.
tecknick (NY)
Trump made financial life on Long Island much more difficult by eliminating SALT deductions over 10K on income taxes. Why anyone who resides in Peter King's district would ever vote for a republican is beyond my comprehension. Putting a dedicated Trump synchophant in the soon-to-be vacated position is indeed scary. The damage that could be done is immeasurable.
From Where I Sit (Gotham)
The responsibility for the injury caused by the SALT deductions are squarely on the shoulders of the village/town/county and state politicians and their profligate spending. The major bulk of taxes in places like Long Island go to fund debt service and bloated civil servant pay and benefits. Consolidating the 96 school district into one each for Nassau and Suffolk would sane tens of millions each year. Capping civil service pay to some multiple of the minimum wage would save hundreds of millions each and every year. Dissolving the pensions and returning those billions to taxpayers would send a message and turn the tide in LI. Finally, a resumption of the draft to fill not only military personnel needs but to also staff police, fire and highway departments with capable young men in exchange for the “free” K-12 education they were handed would ensure reasonable taxes for generations.
ManhattanMom (New York, NY)
@From Where I Sit Restore the draft?? Oh yeah, that idea is going to win elections on LI. And tampering in any way with the excellent public schools that so many LI parents rely on is a nonstarter. The federal government has long relied on states and municipalities to fund local schools, police, fire departments, etc. That’s why it made sense to allow people to deduct local/state taxes from their federal taxes. The horrific move by the greedy, corrupt Trump regime to strip this benefit away undermines those localities where residents want high quality services and are willing to pay for them.
Lars (NY)
@tecknick If you can afford to live in a house that has more than $ 10 000 in taxes than you can afford to pay more. SALT deduction benefited high-income taxpayers in high-tax jurisdictions and high high-income individuals living in high-tax jurisdictions with high housing values When a state or local tax was raised by $1, individuals who itemized their federal deductions would only experience a net tax increase of $0.60 to $0.90, depending on their federal marginal income tax rate. Jurisdictions with higher-income residents received more of a benefit than those with lower-income residents. Your complaint rings hollow. Eliminating that preferential treatment of the well off was one of the few things Donald Trump did right
syfredrick (Providence)
As someone who was born and raised on Long Island, this is the most depressing article that I've read in a long time. How people imagine that grifting confers business, and therefore political, acumen I'll never understand.
Usok (Houston)
She is qualified to run. She is married to a rich & powerful family. Thus, she should have the money and name to support her candidacy. The only bad thing is that no one is running for office to serve the people any more. Politician becomes an ordinary job for people who can talk and lie in the same time. They will also enjoy many benefits in the public office that ordinary citizen won't have. If she or any member of the Trump family is running for public office, it will be the beginning of a new dynasty like the previous Bush and Kennedy families.
Kan (Upstate)
Poppycock, Usok, on your first statement! Being rich does not automatically confer the right or the qualifications to hold office.
Seriously (Australia)
Seriously?
Hexagon (NY)
Don't you have to live in the district to run to represent it? Somehow I think that none of the Trumps really want to set up house in Nassau County (or at least I hope not!)
George Gollin (Champaign, IL)
@Hexagon Nope-- you just need to live in the same state. Frightening, the thought of more Trumps in elected office.
lyndtv (Florida)
@George Gollin Well, that is the first thing that needs to change. How could someone from Buffalo adequately address the needs of L.I. Or vice versa. Local representatives should be the most responsive to local citizens.
Reader (Brooklyn)
Representative King’s seat is in Suffolk County.
