I think this picture was taken in a jail because I saw the metal bars for doors. I saw a lot of beds but I am not sure why the women were hugging together. Chane, 10, Bangkok I think the women are hugging because one of the women is leaving the jail and going to be a good person. Ting Os, 12 , Bangkok.
Da'varion Williams (Tx)
When i first glance at this picture it seems to look like these women are in jail due to the matching white uniforms and the cell that is blocking off the room and the bunk beds. But if you happend to look a little closer it looks like someone is being released from jail due to the emotion going on around the room everyone seems happy and joy is filling up the room. So it leads me to believe maybe the poor old lady did nothing to be put in jail maybe she was wrongfully accused for something she never did.
Katie (KY)
They might be visiting someone in jail.
Abbie Kate (Kentucky)
In this picture, I think that the one facing the camera is retiring from the prison or camp or something like that. so they are saying goodbye.
Maggie (Illinois)
It looks like family/friends are reuniting after being away from each other. Perhaps one of them lives in that facility they are in. Maybe, it is a jail, or a camp of some sort. I think the one facing the camera is the one that lives there in that facility because of his clothing.
Giourgken (Greece)
At first glance, it looks like a prison only for women. But if anyone looks carefully he will understand that is not prison, in my opinion, I would say something different which seems like a prison-like psychiatric clinic. I was thinking while I was watching better this place I am really sure it is a psychiatric ward in the prison. I am sure that because of the front of and around in windows there are railings everywhere. And all of the women there are wearing white same clothes and shoes. Finally, they have double the same beds in the room.
HS (Canterburry)
In this picture it looks like 2 prisoners making up or there family members who haven't seen each other in a while. It looks like a reporter brought one person in to see how they react.
Corbin Comet (HHHS)
In the picture it looks like people could be visiting family or friends that are in jail. Or the people in jail are working and doing a little helping out to try to reduce their prison sentences. What tells me this is that all the people are behind bars. Also most of them are wearing similar uniforms like a prison normally does. They could be working in the mail room because I see little office like spaces or they could be for making phone calls.
Joe Comet (HHHS)
This picture in some ways could be very sad to some people. I believe that this picture is of some lady hugging her dear friend that's in jail and she just got released. She is hugging her friend that will remain in jail while she is getting let go today. They have probably been friends in jail for a very long time and her friend is going to remain in jail for a lot longer time. This picture is sad because it could remind you of saying goodbye to a dear friend that you won't see for a very long time.
cayla comet (hanover)
In this picture, I believe that this lady is getting out of jail. I feel like she has done nothing to be in jail and that's why everyone is hugging her and is excited for her that she is getting out. I say this because everyone is looking at the ladies hugging and looks happy, the lady behind them that is dressed normally is smiling and looks very happy as well. I believe that she was in jail because they are all wearing the same thing, and there are bars that block off the room they are in.
Sophie, Comet (Hanover Horton)
In this picture, I notice what looks like some type of room for people who are in some sort of jail, and they share a room with many other women. There are two ladies hugging, and it looks like one of the ladies might finally be getting out and the other lady is happy for her. The lady dressed in nice clothes could be coming to pick up their family member who is getting released, or she could be the lady in jails parole officer maybe. Lastly, I notice that the two people hugging are saying their final goodbyes as one of the ladies are being released and get to go home.
isaiah (vancover)
i think there visting there family
chloe (atlanta)
It looks like a prisoner's family came to visit her. i see a person who looks like a prisoner and a woman who looks dressed up for a visit that could be a family member.
darius (Vancouver Washington)
i think a family member is coming to free someone that was in jail or prison for a long time.
kile (sifton)
it looks like one of them is in jail and they getting out because the lady on the left has her purse in her hand and she is smiling.
Eliza M (Hermitage)
It looks like two women are supporting each other during hard times. It also looks like either one or both of them are getting out of wherever they are and are happy/relieved.
Kylie (HHS)
It looks like a prison and a lady is getting out and the ladies look happy and positive.
Nora (HHS)
Prisoners or a prisoner and a guard/ correctional officer are hugging in a jail.
ally (pa)
this picture feels very positive. perhaps, the women are finally being released from prison
Ella (Hermitage)
The lady on the left is getting out of prison and the lady on the right is proud of her for how far she has come from before prison.
kenzie (hermitage)
The setting is a prison, and one of the prisoners is hugging a guard or visitor. This image shows the emotion that is being expressed and it seems like the prisoner is being released
Kayla (PA)
It seems she is being released from some sort of prison. The tone of the picture is very positive and light.
Thuy (HHS)
Looks like a jail cell, or mental hospital? and there is a lady smiling, so maybe the man is being released from an institution and his daughter is there to see him
Antonio (Hermitage)
An old women embraces a friend as she is released from prison which she was put into for a crime she did not commit.
Chase (PA)
It looks like two people saying goodbye. They look like prisoners so I assume one has served their sentence and is leaving those who have not.
Maura (HHS)
It looks as if two prisoners are hugging, or a prisoner is hugging their correctional officer. This picture depicts that happiness can be found in even the most unlikely places
Aniyah (PA)
The woman is being released. A very positive vibe from the lightening and the woman standing behind her. The all white clothing is positive and white symbols purity.
Alexis (HHS)
Its like some one who was detained or is in jail and is being let go
RYAN (Hhs)
It looks like 2 people are reuniting and because of the bars it looks like some kind of prison or possibly a psych ward as they are not wearing handcuffs.
Al (HHS)
Prisoners saying farewells as one is about to be released. It provides humanity to prisoners as many people see them as alien to law-abiding citizens.
Taylor (Hermitage)
It appears that the two people hugging are saying goodbye to one another. Also, the lady on the left is clearly happy, which makes it seem as though she may be taking one of the prisons home after being released.
logan (hermithae)
A nice lady is getting released from a prison. Most likely for a crime she did not commit.
Daphne (Hermitage)
The image shows inmates hugging in a prison. It shows that prisoners are people to
Autumn (Hermitage)
I believe a women who is incarcerated or in a rehabilitation center is saying goodbye to her visitor because her time has expired. Their hug looks passionate but i believe she is leaving because her feet are pointed towards the open doors to exit.
Will (pa)
this is a prison, and the prisoner is hugging a guard or helper of some sort. She may be on her way to freedom as the picture was taken from out the door.
CJ (Hermitage)
The two women are embracing each other as it looks like one is being released from prison. It shows how not all criminals have wicked hearts, and how a loving and successful future is still a possibility for all individuals.
Connor E (HHS)
They seem to be in a prison or place to stay where they are finally going to be released which causes them to re-embrace.
Amber Harrington (PA)
This is a prison. The one girl in the back is well dressed and smiling which makes me thing the fresh ended up prisoner is leaving somewhere positive. I think the other prisoner is hugging her goodbye.
Rhys (HHS)
It seems like two prisoners embracing, and one of them is being released.
Sarah (PA)
To me, this is a picture of a woman who is about to be released from prison, and she is saying goodbye to the people she met. She is finally able to start the next chapter in her life.
Arick (PA)
2 female prisoners are hugging, with relatives closely by. One may be getting out, and wishing the other a heartfelt goodbye.
Gianna Brown (HHS)
Someone is seeing there closely related relative for the first time in a long time after being in jail for a long time not being able to see their family
Ashleigh (Hermitage)
They appear to be in prison but the message is that even in a seemingly horrible place there is positivity in the worst situations.
Cole (F)
It almost looks like a jail with the bars and stuff but im not sure what it is. The woman is hugging the other woman/man maybe because she is leaving. It almost looks like she is getting her freedom back and the girl behind her is happy watching.
NIKI (GREECE)
In this picture there is a live taking. In the foreground I can see two people dressed in white, embracing. Next to them, the lady who is holding a mobile phone, must be a relative (maybe the daughter) lady’s in the foreground who has got white hair. Today this woman is living the prison! Background I can see the double level begs, where must sleep the prisoners. In this time they are awake. Someone are sitting on the beds, some else are sitting on chairs.
athi (greece/thessaloniki)
People can become very affectionate between themselves. In the picture I see a prison where there are prisoners in it. The prison door is open and two prisoners I think, hug each other for goodbye... One looks sad to be released, because he needs to say goodbye to a friend. So I think the picture illustrates that ..☝☝ and the prisoners are human, and they have emotions...
carmenp (skhs yo)
I see two people giving eachother hugs. there are bunks in the backround and a women wearing reqular clothes. Everyone else is wearing white clothes. I belive this is either a womens correctional center or a mental hospital place. the two people seem happy tho like shes getting out.
Kiki (Greece ,Thessaloniki)
In this picture, I see a place which is looks like a psychiatric hospital and it's probably for women. Specifically, there are two women who are hugging each other. I guess that the young person that is hugging the old women came here to visit her, because the one is hospitalized there. On the other hand maybe the women be hugging because one of them is being released and she's finally free to go home and see her family again.
Ariel L (skhs)
It looks like an inmate is being released from some sort of jail, based on the fact that they are all wearing uniforms that say something about a department of correction and the woman waiting for the woman hugging another inmate. Its possible that some of the people in the photo work at the facility rather than being inmates of it.
Lily Z (SKHS)
I agree with most. It looks as if the woman is getting released from some sort of jail. The bitter looks on the inmates behind the hugging 2 could either be sadness or jealousy. Because they all seem to be wearing white uniforms, it looks like the women are hugging or or the other goodbye.
Jon G (SKHS)
the women looks to be geting out of jail and the other women are upset
Absydi J (SKHS)
In this picture, I see what looks like a jail cell. On the other side of the door there is a bunch of people, all but 2 wearing all white. 2 people are hugging, and one of them looks a little bit sad. In the back, there is what looks like bunk beds or tables. Above the the table/bunk beds, there is a thick glass window. In my opinion, one man is being release from a jail or something of the sort and the others are hugging him goodbye.
Morgan M. (SKHS)
@Absydi J Very good observations. I also agree that someone is being released from jail, probably after a very long scentece that has been served.
Miguel A (NC)
I think one of the inmates is being released from prison after being there for a while. The two inmates are hugging with a gate open to let her go.
Ariel L (skhs)
@Miguel A I agree, it looks like they could be hugging goodbye.
BeeAlyce (California)
I think that they are hugging because one of them got out of jail or prison. I think that because there are bars as in a jail cell in the front.
Jon G (SKHS)
@BeeAlyce i think you are right
Clara (Equator)
On this picture I can see two people in the center of the imagine. They are hugging. The first one is an old women, and the other is an adult (I can't identify his gender, but I guess he is a man). They are dressed in white clothes and they seem to be in a prison. On a second thought this place seems to comfortable to be a jail. In fact, I could Imagine that this place is a mental asylum. Inside the Room there are other women that are talking to each other sitting in old chairs. I can Imagine that the young person that is hugging the old women came here to visit her. Maybe he is working at this place as a doctor or a security guard because of the dress code that he is respecting. I think that the old woman is his mother and she is hospitalized there.
Lily Z (SKHS)
@Clara This is a good way to put this image into perspective. It really could be a mental institution. I think that its 2 women hugging, because there is only women in the room and thats usually how it works.
class 2RI (Nice, France)
This picture was taken nowaday in south America. Given what we can see we suppose it takes place in a psychiatric hospital for women. In fact there are bars on the windows, on the door and one camera. there are nursing taking care of patients, the women may be hugging because one of them goes out. We can presume the woman on the left is family member.
Ms. A (New York)
Here are three groups of students' inferences and/or observations: (Boysenberries) -it looks like a jail -two women are hugging each other and they look happy so maybe one is leaving (Apricots) -they look happy to see each other and perhaps they didn't see each other for a long time -they are hugging with happy emotion and maybe it is because they are saying goodbye to each other -this looks like a prison or for women because of the bars and how everyone is wearing the same clothes (Clementines) -the big windows and how people look confirms that it is not a jail but a care center -the bars may be for added security -it might be a center for old people who were left by their families -it might be a home or mental school for the elderly
Lillyanna G (SKHS)
This picture looks like a women possibly being released from a correctional faculty or prison. I notice that everyone is wearing the same all white outfit, and that there is a cell behind the women hugging. I can assume that they're hugging because one of them is getting released. There is also a woman off to the side dressed normally so I can assume that she is there for the person that is being released and is very happy.
Cohn's 5th Grade Class (Kolmar School)
We think that the woman is getting out of an asylum.
Charlie Brooks (CMS)
It looks like a prison for people who are older looking at the background. I think it is a prison for people who are too old for the danger of prison, or its for people who are nice and peaceful in jail, so they come to this prison. In the front of the picture, it looks like people either saying goodbye or reuniting again, but looking at the other peoples faces, I think they are reuniting. I think they are in a prison because of the bars and the bunk beds.
Cohn's 5th Grade Class (Kolmar School)
@Charlie Brooks You are very observant. We agree with your thought about the type of prison it could be.
yahsir (lensen st)
I think this is a photo of a woman in a women's correctional facility getting a visit from a family member or a friend. They look like they are in a jail/prison because there are bars as an entry to the room and bars on the windows. There also seems to be a security camera in the ceiling. For those reasons I think it is a jail.
Christina H (Cms)
In this picture it looks like it is in a women's prison because of the bars and the same white clothing some of them are wearing. The lady in the blue looks like she just got finished visiting someone. The other ladies with the white uniform on look like they are waiting for their visitors to come. The older lady looks like she is about to get out and giving the guard a hug goodbye. She looks like she is going home with the lady with the phone in her hand that is smiling.
isabelle lambrou (._.)
1. I think that these people r getting out of jail 2. I think this because they look like they are at some sort of prison cause of the bars. also they are hugging and smiling so its probablly a good thing 3. it also looks like some sdorta bun ker ause of the bunk beds in the background.
Averi-Jade M (SKHS)
@isabelle lambrou i agree with you they do look like they are getting out of jail
Sophie B (SKHS)
They look like they're in prison or at lest one of them is. I think that the girl with grey hair is getting out and is hugging an officer that helped her through this. Or it could be a rehab center and she's getting out. Most likely it is a rehab center because of what they're wearing. You also don't see jail cells just beds. But the girl with the grey hair looks really happy that she's getting out.
Jayden Lynch (SKHS)
i think this is the Alabama department of corrections because of the writing on the mans back and this woman is saying her goodbyes to the inmates and staff here because she is probably done with her sentence.
Cohn's 5th Grade Class (Kolmar School)
@Jayden Lynch You're very specific. We can't make out that the back of the shirt says "Alabama" for sure. However, we really appreciate your thoughts!
Hayden C (SKHS)
I think that this picture was taken at some facility for women because of the bars and the clothes that they are wearing. Also said that because it looks like it's just all women in there. I also think that it's a meeting for the inmates to see their families just for a little while considering that there are people in there not wearing the uniforms. I also think that this picture was not taken to long ago because the room looks alright because it has fans and lights the chairs that we have now at this school.
Linnea J (skhs)
There are two people hugging and a woman watching them. It looks like they are in a hospital because there are beds in the background and a lot of people are wearing white. The walls are light pink, which creates a positive mood. There is a woman in the back walking away and she looks like she is crying because she is holding her hand up to her face like she is wiping her tears. The two people that are hugging are elderly or at least the one that is facing the camera is. The door looks like prison doors.
Alacyn G (SKHS)
It looks like this scene takes place in a women's prison, mostly because I don't see any men, but I could be wrong. Anyways, it looks like this takes place at a prison, mostly because there are thick black jail bars leading into a room full of women wearing white uniforms. Off to the left looks like a lawyer, and it looks like she's representing the older woman facing forward. The two women hugging, including who is represented by the lawyer, it looks like they are saying "goodbye" because the older lady is free to go home and see her family again.
Chuylyr S (skhs)
in this picture it looks like they are in a correctional facility and one of the inmates is being released to go make a new life for themselves. i say this because the back of that woman's shirt says correction or something like that on it. i say that the inmate in the picture is being released because one of the other inmates looks as though she is hugging that one goodbye. there is also another lady there not wearing the uniform hat the others are wearing and she looks happy for the person so maybe she is her case worker or part of her family.
Shaylyn M. (SKHS)
I think that she is leaving prison.
Laura (SKHS)
in this picture the things that drag the most attention at first are the two ladies hugging (looks like they're saying goodbye) and the bars. There is a woman looking at the ladies hugging with a proud look on her face, as if she knows one of them. Most of the women are wearing a white uniform, what would make me guess they are in a working area, where they work as nurses or something. judging by the place itself and the bars, is not a rich place; it looks like the places where the nurses sleep when they take night shifts and everything. I guess one of the two girls in the hug is going out with someone and then they are saying goodbye.
Mark T (SKHS)
I'm pretty sure that this is a woman prison because i don't see any males in this picture. What I think is going on is that the women's sentence is coming to an end and will soon be free because she is hugging her friend. The lady to the right doesn't have any prison uniform on, so i think she informed the prisoner that she is yet to be free.
Carly B (SKHS)
I think they are hugging goodbye. They seem to be in some kind of facility for women. One of the women might be being released and they are all saying goodbye. The women to the left not in a suit seems happy. the has her phone out and it looks like she was taking pictures. It think it is day time because the light is shining through the windows. There are bunk beds. The women are dressed in white and have writing on the back of their shirts.
Bailey P (SKHS)
This picture was obviously taken in some sort of women's prison. It looks like it's visitor day because some women are wearing casual clothes, which you wouldn't wear in a prison. The other possible outcome is that the prisoner is being released. What's unusual is the pink walls and lot's of white. Some are casually sitting in the background while the women in the front are embracing another.
Siale Laupola (skhs)
what i see in this picture is two girls hugging and it seems that they haven't seen each other in awhile and they are happy to finally see each other and they seem genuinely happy to see each other and that they are wearing white suits , it seems like a jail or some sort of Constitution
Jahnessa H (SKHS)
In this picture it looks like an inmate who could possibly be getting released from a correction facility. I say this because she looks happy when hugging the other person in white. the persons back facing the cameras shirt says something correction. i also see a lady in regular clothes smiling at them hug, this lady could possibly be a relative or spouse of some sort to the person getting out
Bradyn M (SKHS)
In this picture, I see 2 people hugging like one of them is leaving. I think the girl on the left is leaving what looks like a prison. I think this because of the many bunk beds and black jail bars make it look like a prison. Also, there is a lady on the left smiling, I believe that she is here to pick up the prisoner from the jail. The prisoner looks much older than the lady on the left.
Shaili B (SKHS)
I think this is a women's correctional facility, because there's only women in the picture and they're all in a uniform and there's bars. One of the lady's are hugging another and there's another lady smiling watching so I think she's being released and the lady smiling and watching is probably a family member picking her up.
Isaiah T (SKHS)
I think one inmate is leaving because you see one hugging another. It looks emotional, I also think that because you can see the one woman to the left looks like she might walk her out maybe. They maybe in a correctional facility and have visiting hours.
Da'vi Guzman- E (SKHS)
This photo shows a prisoner being released after years being locked up. There are a lot of details showing that that it's a women's prison like the black jail bars , the women's uniforms and the beds. The women are hugging because most likely spent years together in the prison.
JonteM (SKHS)
It looks like a cellmate just got released and is saying good bye to one of her friends in prison. I say this because there is a woman with a dress on staring at both of them, might be a family friend or a sister. It is obviously a prison because of the fact that everyone in the front and the back are wearing the same white uniforms. Also on the back of the right woman's shirt, you see it spell out "correction." which indicates it most certainly is a prison institute. Finally just looking at the diversity in the room, this seems to be in the U.S.
cressa S (skhs)
i think in this picture is someone hugging the other person and it looks like they are in prison and it looks like the people that are hugging looks like she is being realesed out of prison. they are wearing all white clothes and the windows have bars on then and the room is pink and the door is made out of bars.
Isaiah S (SKHS)
It's a prisoner being released and one of the girls are really sound that she's leaving and it looks like the girl in the black with a skirt is her mom that is being released and the background theirs girls playing cards reading and there's lot of bunk beds. Every prisoner is wearing a white outfit.
grace s (SKHS)
This picture looks like the lady is getting out of prison. so that's why the other lady is hugging her and that's the other lady in the striped shirt has phone phone to like record them hugging like wow your finally out.
Tony A (SKHS)
What I see in this picture is two older women hugging each other in remembrance of someone. Or the two girls haven’t seen each other in a while or never met at all
Marissa J. (SKHS)
On the whole, this picture shows a prisoner being released. There are many details present in the photo that support my ideas. First and foremost I see dark, thick black jail bars towards the front of the scene. All of the people wearing all white uniforms are members of the establishment (prisoners). They are all women of various ethnic origins. Some are casually sitting in the background while the women in the front are embracing another. I assume that it is a fellow prisoner that means a lot to them due to their sincere facial expression and tender hand on the person's back. They are saying goodbye for the last time. The women on the left is wearing an opaque skirt and carries a phone in addition to a purse. Considering the variation in style and color of her outfit, she is picking up the prisoner. More I can find includes the word correction printed across the back of the prisoner's outfits. This puzzles me because the connection is vague. The woman in the blue shirt in the far back could also be picking up a prisoner. As far as location goes, I assume it is in the United States based on the ethnic diversity.
Mark T (SKHS)
@Marissa J. I agree, I also think that the lady to the left of her is informing her than she is being released and she is a happy about it.
Bailey P (SKHS)
@Marissa J. I think you have a bunch of valid points and that the details that you pointed out, are probably very accurate. I think that the woman is possibly being released and is embracing the guard and the woman to the left is probably taking her home.
Evan M. (SKHS)
I can observe that in the picture, two elderly, colored woman are hugging in what looks to be a correctional facility. I can also see that there is another smiling woman who seems to be an innocent civilian possibly a family member to pick them up. I can tell that this is a correctional facility for women only because there are only woman as well as bars, bunk beds, and the back of the woman's shirt says correctional on the back of it. I can infer that this lady is getting out of prison and her sentence is over and she is hugging an old friend she made while behind bars. I can infer this because the gate is open, she is hugging another inmate, and there is a lady in civilian clothing off to the side possibly there to pick her up. This is what I think is going on in this picture.
Isaiah T (SKHS)
@Evan M.I agree with you because that is also what i think.
Ethan (Stines)
I think they are happy to be reunited
Isaiah S (SKHS)
@Ethan I disagree because it looks that one of there's girls are leaving because there both wearing the same outfit.
grace s (SKHS)
@Ethan same they look really happy like they havent seen each other in a while.
Ava (Missouri)
I think that the prisoner is leaving jail.
Joe mama (Titan)
This is a prison or rehab center
James (Earth)
@camden I think that is what is happening also
James (Missouri)
I think one inmate is leaving because you see one hugging another. It looks emotional, I also think that because you can see the one woman to the left looks like she might walk her out maybe. They maybe in a correctional facility and have visiting hours.
Carly B (SKHS)
@James I agree with your statement.
Chuylyr S (skhs)
@James i agree with what you said. it also looks like in the back there is either a case worker or a family member waiting to take the inmate home.
Linnea J (skhs)
@James I think judging by the doors it could be a prison but it doesn't really look like it to me.
James (Earth)
I think the prisoner Is getting out
Da'vi Guzman- E (SKHS)
@James I agree with James that its a prisoner getting out of several years in prison.
Camden (Earth)
I think they are getting out of jail
James (Earth)
I think the prisoner is getting out
Meghan P (SKHS)
In this picture I see two women hugging. I also see that some women are wearing uniforms and other women are wearing casual clothing. I believe these women are in a correctional prison. I say this because on the back of their uniforms it says something about a department of corrections. I believe they are having visiting hours and they are able to see people.
Tony A (SKHS)
@Meghan P i agree with you because it is a prison and they are visiting
Jahnessa H (SKHS)
@Meghan P I can see what you're saying but it looks like the lady could be leaving because she is hugging another inmate and not the lady in regular clothes
Gabriel C. (south kitsap)
In this picture it looks like a a son visiting his mom at the women correctional facility and saying by to her and saying his last words before he sees her again in a couple months. Also i said this because all the women in the jail place they are wearing the same clothing. Also the girl on side is probably his aunt.
Aiden.H (LMS)
I infer that the woman in the jail had gotten out and is dearly thanking the man who did it so she could go to her family after so many years or months or days or weeks which made her sad and the woman on the left I think is her daughter and is smiling with a phone and purse signing that she might've payed the prison for the old woman to get out.
Katie N (SKHS)
It looks like a female prisoner is saying good bye to a jail guard because she could be leaving jail. How I know this because there's a lady next to the female prisoner that looks like her daughter, and the prisoner looked happy. I also know this because there are visible jail bars on both sides of the picture, the beds in the back are what you would see in a jail. I also noticed that this could be an all female prison, seeing that there's pink walls and there's only females inn the picture .
Nicole A. (SKHS)
There are bunk beds in a pink room, so this has to be a women correctional facility. And there are women in the back waiting, this possibly could be a releasing day for some women. This has to be a minimal correction center because women wouldn't be very close together. The women is hugging another staff most likely. And other women are also being released because i can see the background has another mom. This is a jail because of what the girls shirt says and the jail bars.
Megan (LMS)
What i think is going on, Is these people in the uniforms that are kind of dirty but clean in some type of jail and theirs probably some type of family thing going on and there's family member's who visited the person in jail and there reuniting and hugging. Theirs some people who didn't have people who visited them, there beds do not look cozy i'd be scared to sleep on the top with no bars on each side. this room is obviously for girls cause of the colored pinkish walls.
JonteM (SKHS)
@Megan I said the same thing about the woman on the right being tied in with family
Wyatt P. (SKHS)
I think they are in a prison just at a first glance, more specifically a women's prison. I can't see what is on the shirt, but it doesn't look like it's in English.
Laura (SKHS)
@Wyatt P. I don't think they are in prison, because there are no guards, the outfits doesn't look like prison uniforms, and i don't think there would be normal people walking around.
Vincent Kamark (LMS)
It shows a Inmate at some sort of Jail or Prison meeting a faamily member possibly. I say it because, the bars are open and 2 people are hugging each other. They also look similar which could indicate that they are family. You can tell it's a Jail by the windows which seem to have protection over them. You can also tell by the Beds they have which resemble a Jail bed.
LaniO (SKHS)
A room with an inviting pink color, pink walls, making the room bright and vibrant. Woman dressed in white jumpsuits, that look similar to jail jumpsuits. These woman, to what I see, are not in jail, because there are windows. These woman are also not in a jail from what I see because there are not separate rooms for inmates. Wooden bunk beds are lined along one another. There is a woman visiting, what looks like a facility of some sort for women. There is a metal door, with metal bars that are separating this pat of the facility from the rest. there must be different sections of people. This could be a rehab facility.
Preston D. (SKHS)
Well the setting appears to be in a women's prison because the person with their back to the camera, on their shirt it says "corrections". So it probably stands for "correction facility." The 2 women are hugging as if this is the last time they will see each other for a long time, and that might very well be so, because one of them must be leaving the prison that day cause they have finished their sentence. There is another women standing next to the hugging ladies and this woman is not wearing any prison clothes so she must be the person picking up one of the ladies to take out of the prison.
Saige H (SKHS)
There are women in white outfits hugging next to bars. I think this is a women's prison, since there are bars, bunk beds, and no men. When you look closer, you see two women in dress clothing. I think one of the women hugging the other is getting released, and they are saying goodbye. I also see chairs and tables. A couple of the other women are watching them. I think one of the women in dress clothes is recording or taking pictures, because she has her phone out pointed at the two hugging.
Ryan S (SKHS)
looks like some type of prison visit of some kind based on the cells seems to be a level one or a rec room
Justin (SKHS)
i think that they are in a correction facility aka jail because the back of their shirts say correction. it is a women facility because they are all girls and there is no male guards or it could be a visiting day because the lady looks like they are happy to see each other. the walls are pink and it is a bunk room.
Ethan (Troy,Mo)
It looks like the women is getting out of jail and the person she is hugging is either a family member or a friend.
James (Missouri)
@Ethan I don’t think it’s a family member I think it’s another inmate because they have the same uniform on.
Abigale D. (SKHS)
I think in this photo someone is leaving jail, and saying their goodbyes. I think the prisons is a women's one because if you look around the inmates all look like women. Why I think someone is leaving is because two people are hugging, and also that the door is opened. The door wouldn't be opened if no one wasn't leaving. Also there is a regular dressed women standing by which I assume is the one picking up one of the inmates.
Deanna D. (SKHS)
This looks like a prison for women. AS I can see there is only women in this big room that many bunks and windows with bars on them. There also seems to be one door which is a cell door. All of the women are wearing white clothes and shoes. Right in the front of the door there are to women hugging like they are saying goodbye while a lady in a dress and blazer is standing back waiting and smiling. There is also a tall very skinny woman in a blue shirt walking around.
Svend T (SKHS)
It looks like a prison where there is a elder women giving a hug and crying she has a white shirt on like the other prisoners where there is a name of the place on the back. It makes me say this because of the bars and because everybody has the same clothing on. I also see a women in a blue shirt in the background that probably isn't a part of the prison. There is also a women smiling the the front looking at the two hugging so i might think that its a person that has been released from prison
Dylan C (SKHS)
It looks like a meet up for prison inmates to say hi t there family and friends. Or one of them is getting released and they are saying good bye to there friends in jail. I say this because they are both dressed in all white which could there uniforms.
Evan P (SKHS)
I think that these people are all in a mental hospital taking their medication but it makes them weird.
jontae m. (SKHS)
I think that this is a scene from that show orange is the new black. i think this because if it was a real prison there would be no cameras
Matt (Hi)
It looks like he say bye bye to the pow pow
Emma p (None of your Bossiness)
I thank there in jail
Wyatt P. (SKHS)
@Emma p *think and *they're
Tristan (Missouri)
@emma i agree
Jayson (Mo)
That’s nice
Ms. Jodie's Class (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr MS)
We think this photo is of a women's prison. We know this because there are no men in the photo and the women are wearing the same clothes. We noticed bars, bunk beds but no guards.
Ryan S (SKHS)
@Ms. Jodie's Class i agree with this comment based on the info in the photo.
Saige H (SKHS)
@Ms. Jodie's Class I agree
Addyson (Troy, MO)
It looks like they are friends or thanking arch other.
Emma p (None of your Bossiness)
@Addyson true true
kierstyn g (LCMS)
In this photo the ladies are at a jail facility. I know this because there are bar cells in the photo. In this photo the two ladies in the front closest to the door are friends. I know this because they are hugging eachother. In this photo one of the ladies is leaving. I know this because the jail door is open. Based off all the evidence one of the friends is leaving jail facility so they are saying goodbye.
Addyson (Troy, MO)
@kierstyn g That is a really smart idea.
Micheal (Troy MO)
@kierstyn g I like the idea. I had that same idea so all I can really do is. Ditto
Svend T (SKHS)
@kierstyn g I agree but i think that it is a prison and not a jail
Ms. G's Grade 7's (Narin, Ont)
We can infer that this picture is taking place in a Department of Corrections based off of the back of the woman's shirts. We also think this because the windows and doors are covered by bars, and it is visible that there are security measures being taken such as cameras. We believe this is a women's only facility based on the fact that it is occupied by women, as well as there are no male staff present. It is evident based on the measures being taken, that this facility is most likely a minimal security department because the inmates are able to sleep together in one room. The women hugging in the focal point of the picture are probably saying goodbye to one another, as one of them is being released. This accounts for the smiles on their faces, and the fact that the other woman looks like she is there to pick her up.
Marissa J. (SKHS)
@Ms. G's Grade 7's I love how detailed and well crafted your observations are! You supported your ideas with hard concrete examples, some of which I missed.
LaniO (SKHS)
@Ms. G's Grade 7's I like what you could infer about this photo, that there is a detail on the clothing, that says, "Department of Corrections. I can see your inferences and compare them to mine that i also see that this could be a woman's only facility.
Emma (Missouri)
I think that the women is getting out of jail or a center because she is wearing plain white scrubs and is hugging a woman and the gate or door is open
Ethan (Troy,Mo)
@Emma I agree
jontae m. (SKHS)
@Emma i agree in this statment
Katie N (SKHS)
@Emma That seems like a reasonable answer, and that I agree with you
Alex McCarthy (Hancock Md)
In the photo it looks like a woman’s correctional facility. I can see that there are people visiting someone they might know and I see that there are orderly’s sitting at their desk doing work. In the photo it looks like a lady is being discharged and being picked up by someone she knows, the older woman is saying good bye to what looks like her orderly that has been taking care of her while she was there. I can see that all the other orderly’s must know this lady and must like her because their all smiling. It looks like the lady is very happy to be leaving/ being discharged.
Ashley (Hancock)
It looks like a jail. And a worker is being really friendly with the one of the guys. So in the picture, it looks like an jail because they are are some wearing white and the doors look like it too because of how they’re made. The one guy looks like a worker and he’s hugging another. Probably saying hi or something. And in the back there’s bunk beds and other things
Deanna D. (SKHS)
@Ashley Yes I agree but you missed that they are all women and the guard seems to be sad but also happy to see someone leave.
Nina Marie T. (Hancock, MD)
A correctional center occupied mostly by women. Two women are hugging maybe because one of them are gonna be released from the center and return to her home and start a new life.
Preston D. (SKHS)
@Nina Marie T. I think one of them is being released from prison as well.
Hunter U (Hmshs)
Two people in jail meeting for the first time is my guess, I see that it looks like a woman’s jail
Nicole A. (SKHS)
@Hunter U I believe she is being released, because they look like they are saying goodbye and then she is leaving,.
Hannah (Missouri)
What I see in this picture is two older women hugging each other in remembrance of someone. Or the two girls haven’t seen each other in a while or never met at all.
Aryonnah (Missouri)
I think the woman is leaving a correctional center. She’s in white “uniform” saying goodbye leaving the doorway with bars in front of it. The windows also have bars and there are numbers on the back of their shirt, it also looks like there are people in there to make sure no one can leave without permission.
Austin (Hancock md)
This was taken place in a women’s correctional center it looks like these two individuals are seeing each other for the first time in a while as the other watch
Seth (Hancock md)
Two people are being reunited from each other, I can infer this because the lady on the left is taking a picture and smiling as there in a correctional center as it says on the lady that’s huggings shirt
Evan .Y. (Hancock MD)
A woman in a correctional center, from it i see the older women is probably leaving now. I know due to the white shirts and the letters on the back.
Marielle M. (skhs)
In the image it looks like 2 people in a jail place are hugging, maybe because she is getting released out of prison and one of her family members on the left came to pick her up to take her home. It seems like the people wearing all white are the prisoners, but since the beds are bunk beds next to each other and not in separate cells, I think these prisoners aren't very dangerous or else they would have their own cell and would be spaced out more and the people in the back are just sitting and seem calm. The 2 people in the front hugging looks like she is getting released from prison and is saying goodbye to a guard that she was possibly friends with. I say a guard because the person is wearing a belt and a tucked in shirt and is standing next to the gate and his uniform is different from the other prisoners and it makes sense to not give a prisoner a belt. Lastly, since the walls are pink and there are only women in the room, I think it is a women's correction facility.
Megan O. (Hancock, md.)
In this photo it appears to be a reunion of some sort between two people. One or both of them might have been in jail and they’re reuniting with each other after a long time. They’re many bunk beds lined up against the wall with many people in the room. Other people are noticing what is happening and are watching two people hug after a long time of not seeing each other. People have enjoyment on their face while these people reunite.
Iziah (Hancock)
@Megan O. In this photo it appears that the forehead between them is influenced and universally big and un forget able
Iziah (Hancock)
@Megan O. In this photo it appears that the forehead between them is influenced and universally big and un forget able Also it appears that they are friends and haven’t seen each other in years and have been separated by bars until this day they finally got the physicality meet.
Seth Bivens (HMSHS)
This has taken place in a women’s correctional facility. The woman on the far left seems to be a reporter of some kind. The two women in the middle are hugging and showing joyful emotions towards one another. The reporter is showing a sense of joy watching these two women hug. I feel as if though the woman in the middle was being visited by the other. And they are both full of emotion, as maybe they hadn’t seen each other in a while.
Ayden T (Hancock, MD)
This is a womens correctional center which is basically a jail. I see people visiting at least thats what it looks like. I say this because people are hugging snd just standing around and talking to others. The place looks pretty friendly and fair over all.
Daniel T (Hancock MD)
This picture looks as if it could be a Women’s prison. You see the bars on windows. The door looks as if it is a cell door. The only people you see are women. Maybe the two you see hugging are reuniting with one another. Or maybe even just got out of a disagreement. All the beds are in an orderly fashion, they are all wearing the same uniform. The three in the front could even be in the same family.
Emily (Maryland)
It looks like someone being released from a women’s correctional center. They are all women and they’re all in matching uniforms with something written on the back. It also appears that the woman to the left is happy so maybe she is related to one of the hugging women. It might be a correctional facility for minor crimes of drug abuse. I am led to believe this is possibly a rehab facility because the people all look very proud or excited for the woman.

Right away this looks like a mother and daughter reconnecting. Obviously they are some sort of correctional facility due to the bars and matching white outfits. It is located in the U.S. and I say that because the writing on their shirts is in English. You can see about 9 other women in the room at this time, two of which work there. I can tell by the fact that they are not wearing the white uniforms. There’s pink walls and multiple bunk beds lined up against the back half of the room. On the right side, between bars, you can see about five women who are in the facility, some of which are jealous. The women is being released and was greeted by her mother. It is also possible that the same thing is happening to another woman behind them because there’s another woman dressed nicely, not in the uniform, who is looking at something we can not see.
Skylee s (hmsh)
What I see in this picture is two older women hugging each other in remembrance of someone. Or the two girls haven’t seen each other in a while or never met at all.
Justyne N (SKHS)
I think that that it is visiting time at the prison. I think that it is in a prison because the back of the person on the rights shirt says "Alabama Department of Correction" and the cameras all over, also because of the windows having bars on then and the cell door. The reason that I think that it is visiting time is there is a couple people not dressed in the same white prison outfits. Also, there is a older woman hugging an inmate. Something that I am still confused about is why there are people just sitting there watching them.
Charles P (Hancock MD)
The image depicts a women's prison of some sort. They all are wearing the same color cloths and the heavy duty steel door seems to give off the vibe of an are where security is required. The close together bunks show that there is a little freedom in this place yet the security is still there. I think this is a woman hugging one of the her friends she made during her duration in the facility. The hug seems to give off the idea that one of the girls is being released and the fact that there is what seems to be a regular dressed woman to their left holding a digital device (phone), implies that she is not being held in custody and is most likely a family member of the woman being released.
Emma Stouffer (Hancock)
In this picture someone is being able to see a family member or friend after a long time in a correctional facility. I don’t believe it’s a jail because the set up would be different in that situation. It seems like a very emotional moment that is wanted to kept in memories because the women to the left has her phone out most likely taking photos.
Aubrey M (SKHS)
This appears to be in a Women's Correctional Center. I say this because they are all wearing the same uniform and the back says "Corrections" or something to that extent. They are also all women which leads me to believe that this is some sort of state facilitated place in efforts to keep order/ punish those who have committed crimes. I believe the two women hugging one another may have been in a disagreement of some sort. I think that the woman's face who you cannot see is the prisoner and the other woman works at the jail. It appears this way because one woman looks more "casual" than the other and also a little bit older. I wonder who the woman is behind them with the phone? Maybe she is taking pictures and documenting the heart-warming moment.
Anne .A. (SKHS)
To me in this picture it looks like either two women are visiting someone in jail, possibly the member is being set free from jail and all three are excited, or maybe being set on a death sentence. although the other women seems very happy to see that member of the jail, so i think that's unlikely for that person to be on death row. i say this because they are in what looks like a jail room with other women in similar uniforms at the woman facing away from us, hugging the older lady. there are bunk beds all in a row for them to sleep on. the three women in the front of the window seem to be very excited to see each other. there is a lady in a blue shirt maybe seeing a jail member of her own, so maybe its visiting day for the jail member, if for certain this is a jail.
Brooklyn W. (SKHS)
I think that this person is finally let out of jail and their friend/family member is getting them out and it looks like they haven't seen each other in a long time. i can tell that it is a jail because there are cameras every 3 feet on the ceiling, the windows are barred up, there's bunk beds, everyone's wearing the same clothes, and in front there's like a cell door.
Heather S. (SKHS)
This looks like a reunion between friends or family in jail or possibly a friend getting to go home. I say this because the setting seems to have bars and doors like you would expect a jail to have. Although i would say these women are all close to being released because they have bigger cells and have more than two people in a cell. there is also bunk beds that helps show multiple people sleep there. I think one of them is getting to go home because the lady on the left has her phone and is happy.I think maybe her case came back as not guilty and everyone is happy for her. I also noticed that the shirts seem to say something about correction which also helps infer they are in a jail. i also noticed the walls are light pink which is commonly used as a calming color.
Andrew B (SKHS)
What looks like is going on in this picture is that a mother is getting to see her son while son is in some kind of correction place. What makes me say this is if you look at the place there are metal bars covering the window and there is a cell where the photo is being taken from and on the ceiling is atleast 4 cameras every 10 feet and and what makes me say that it is a correction center is if you look on the back of his/her shirt it says COR and thats all you can see but i think it is a correction center because that place looks to small to be jail and jails have cells instead of 1 cell and bunk beds.
Samuel (SMS VA USA)
I think that this photo is in and prison or jail because there are bars for doors and the woman who is hugging the guy is wearing some white clothes, so I think she is just being released from this jail/prison. The other woman is the picture appears to be accompanying her to where the other woman is going.
Tiana K (SKHS)
In this picture I see 2 women hugging each other. Maybe they are in a jail because of the bars and the shirts that they are wearing. In my opinion one of the women are getting out so they are giving each other good bye hugs. The reason I think that she is fresh out is because the lady looks proud.
Courtland L (SKHS)
It looks like these people are in a women in a corrections center. i can imply this because there is big steel barred doors, cameras on the ceilings, bars on the windows, and the ladies are wearing all white like if the would be wearing a all orange jumpsuit in prison. it seems like one of the ladies is being released, so she is hugging her friends and saying goodbye
jonathon d (skhs)
they are hugging there are pink walls and the lady is smiling
Justin (SKHS)
@jonathon d i agree that there are pink walls and they are hugging.
Noah T (SKHS)
It looks like two middle-aged women hugging each other, it looks like they're in some sort of jail or prison and most of the woman are in white jumpsuits, another thing I see are two women not dressed the same as the prisoners instead they look like they're dressed nice and the one lady on the left has her phone in her hand.
Emma W. (SKHS)
I think that this is a women's jail/prison because of the beds, the bars, the windows, and how all the women are dressed in the same, white uniform. The two people in front who are hugging look to be a correction officer and a prisoner. The man has "Alabama Department of Corrections" on his shirt, so I presume he is an officer. I think this is a very nice moment, for a prisoner to embrace a correction officer because a lot of the times, they have conflict. That is why that women dressed in normal clothes has her phone out to take a picture of this moment.
Hannah T (SKHS)
To me, this picture appears to be taken at a women's correction center. It looks like someone is being let out either because her time is done or she is going to see her family. The women are in white jumpsuits, there is cell bars, a lot of simple bunk beds, and the windows even have bars on them. There is two visible women who are wearing business clothing, one of the girls that are hugging has their hair braided. There is a lot of cameras in this one room.
Varian F (SKHS)
I believe that this is a corrections facility for women, its not a jail per-say but its something closes the back of the lady being hugged ,shirt has something along the lines of "correction" so maybe a drug rehab but that doesn't make sense with the bars but maybe its just a gate we have for the 2 sides it would make sense , also it isn't the normal orange jump suit that they're wearing one is older than the other.
Caleb S. (SKHS)
In this picture, i believe that a woman is being freeed from jail. I think this because she is wearing all white, and the writing on the back of the shirts. I think she is being freed because the woman next to her is video taping and the cell door is open. She could also be saying goodbye to her fellow jailmates
Varian F (SKHS)
@Caleb S. this statement may be true any other ideas you have?
SydneyA (SKHS)
I believe it is a female correction center because of the bars as doors and that they are wearing shirts that have a number on the back. These women could be family members finally seeing each other or the woman on the left could be being released or has done something good for her life. I think the woman on the right is a guard or a family member because of the belt.I think it is an all woman correction center because all you see is women and they are all wearing the same clothing.
Damien W (SKHS)
There are two people in similar outfits that are hugging each other while a more formally dressed person is watching and smiling. Everyone seems to be decently old in the prison. I feel like one of the people hugging are getting released from this prison. The door is open so in the picture, so it also shows that someone could be getting released.
Connor M. (SKHS)
In this picture I see two people hugging each other, one is of older age and the other looks to be around 30-40, I think that they are hugging each other because they haven't seen each other in a long time due to prison. I can see the bars on the door and the beds all lined up to make me believe that this is some sort of shelter for punishment or safety. I can also see that a lot of people are wearing white shirts and some sort of uniform. I can also see that maybe there is other people reuniting in the background due to the groups gathered and everyone looking at a point behind them.
Annabelle N (SKHS)
This looks to me like two women who are in prison or a rehab facility. I think they are hugging because either one just got there and they are friends and happy to see a familiar face or more likely that one or more likely that one is an inmate and the other is someone in charge of the inmates and the inmate is getting out of jail. I think this because the woman with her back towards the camera is wearing a shirt that says corrections on it and she is also wearing a belt. I gathered that she is in charge rather than an inmate herself because inmates aren't allowed to wear belts. I also think that the inmate is getting released because the other woman is hugging her and the woman standing next to them is seemingly very happy and looks like she may start recording what is happening also the door is opened to what seems like a visitation room or a processing room where they get released.
Damon F. (SKHS)
This photo is clearly taken in a prison of some sort due to the jail bars and the bunk beds. You can also tell that this is a prison due to all the inmates wearing the same clothing. This also appears to be a female ward in the prison or an all female prison due to all of the inmates being female.
SydneyA (SKHS)
@Damon F. I agree because of all the woman wearing the same clothing and the bars on the window.
Lukaus P. (SKHS)
it looks like two family members hugging or a long term friend and looks like there giving s goodbye hug cause it looks like there in jail.
ELA (MA)
We have a few ideas about what is going on in this picture: It is in a jail. We think this because of the bars on the windows and doors. The inmates are wearing white jumpsuits. Two prisoners are hugging. Maybe something sad is going on in her life. The prison guard is smiling next to them. They live far away from each other. -This picture takes place in a psych ward in a jail. There are lots of staff members sitting in the background.
Zariel (Pennsylvania)
I believe that the females hugging in the picture, have fallen out and are both taking responsibility for their actions. I also believe that it may have took a long time for them to actually embrace each other and come to their scenes about their actions.
jonathon d (skhs)
@Zariel i think this is true
Avery (Troy)
I think this is family member visiting there family in prison for the first time in a long time and they are happy to see them
Damon F. (SKHS)
@Avery I do not agree with you because the people hugging are both wearing the inmate outfit. I do believe they have some sort of bond and one of them has just been released.
Heather S. (SKHS)
@Avery That is something i also thought of. Like maybe a mom and daughter or sisters.
Brooklyn W. (SKHS)
@Avery It also looks like the family member might work there because theere wearing the same clothes.
Jacob (Troy)
I think one of them are getting out of jail and the other one is there to pick them up and the other people are their family
Noah T (SKHS)
@Jacob that's a really smart guess I wouldn't have thought of that, that can be very possible.
Vinetta (T)
I think they are in a jail cell and are good friend and they both did something bad but one of them balled one of them out.
Joanna B. (SKHS)
@Vinetta I disagree with your statement because it appears to me that one of them is actually a correctional facility counselor. I also do not see why someone stuck in prison would bail another prisoner out when no one is even bailing them out.
Lilly (Tms)
It looks like the one person the getting adopted or out of jail because there are a lot of beds and people
Deja (T)
@Lilly it look a lot like there getting out of jail of some hospital
Jacob (Troy)
@Lilly I think that one of them is getting out of jail to
Connor M. (SKHS)
@Lilly I disagree about the adopted part of your statement, once someone is 21 or older they can no longer be kept in the home, and the older woman is way to old to be accepted for an adoption.
Emmett (Troy)
I think the people that are hugging are family or friends. They haven’t seen each other in a-while so they are giving each other a hug, to feel like they have seen each other.
Deja (T)
I like this one because everyone looks so happy and it looks like there all in uniform
Vinetta (T)
@Deja that is true they do they do look all look very happy
Carlee (PHS)
One of the people hugging has a ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION shirt on. I think they're hugging because the patient is going home, I can tell by the lady in the back with her phone taking pictures.
jason (LMS)
I predict they are good friends or family members. Perhaps they are in some type of jail. Maybe, they haven't seen each other in a long time.
Lilly (Tms)
@jason I also agree with this it looks like they are reuniting
Emmett (Troy)
@jason I thought the same thing, that they were friends or family that haven’t seen each other in a long time.
Avery (Troy)
@jason I agree
Kailey MacDowell (Phs)
It looks like in this picture a woman is leaving prison and a woman she's friends with is saying goodbye. I think that the woman who's face isn't showing is a worker at the prison and helped get the other woman out. There is also a woman to the side of them taking their picture, and on the side their are women wearing hairnets and shirts that say that they work there.
Hannah T (SKHS)
@Kailey MacDowell I see where you are going with this and I completely agree with your observations.
Aubrey M (SKHS)
@Kailey MacDowell I did not think about this picture as one of the women getting out of prison, that is a very intriguing inference! I thought maybe the older lady worked there but now it makes more sense as to why there is another lady standing there in normal clothing and holding her phone.
Maddy (PCHS)
I think this picture is of some sort of prison facility because the workers have shirts that say “Alabama Department of Corrections”. There is a woman in all white hugging a worker there. The other workers look like lunch ladies. There are bunk beds and women dressed nicely in the background.
Anne .A. (SKHS)
@Maddy i was thinking the person facing away from the camera was the one getting out of jail, i didn't think of it being the other way around.
Nataliya (PCSD)
I think this is happening at the Alabama Department of Corrections based on the shirt that the person in the front is wearing. I believe that the women in all white is leaving and is hugging someone that worked with her. I also think that the women wearing the skirt is her family member bring her home.
Eden (PHS)
it looks like this person is getting out of the Alabama Department of Corrections. This person seems to be hugging the staff member so maybe they are out on early release, compassionate release or their time is just over. it seems like its not a regular jailhouse, the walls are pink and there are regular people on the inside, witch isn't allowed normally.
Jozlyn (PHS)
I think that they are in some kind of hospital. The patient is wearing a hospital gown and the caregiver is wearing a uniform. I think the patient is leaving and she is hugging the person that took care of her.
Adreanna (MD)
In this photo it looks like she is hugging her grandma because in real life when you hit a hard decision and you have to go away from your family it hits hard like you feel like you would never see them again. I feel like the connection between his and his grandmother was lost for a period of time but they might be forgiving each other in this photo it looks like it’s in a jail or rehab center or maybe someone is getting released and his family is picking her up or it’s a day where multiple people can come and see the loved one
John (Hancock md)
This is a woman just getting out of rehab hugging one of the people that watched over her and her daughter is taking pics and is there to pick her up.
Marielle M. (skhs)
@John I thought the same thing. I agreed with your opinion because I observed the same thing that she was probably getting out of rehab or jail and that the person on her left was related to her somehow and was there to pick her up and take her home.
Kaden E (SKHS)
@John I believed the same... I observed that the lady was getting out of either rehab or jail.
Bace (Hancock Maryland)
They only have girls in there, when they are hugging it is probably visiting hours he probably went to see his grandma at this center
Lukaus P. (SKHS)
@Bace I think this is a really good comment but i think if the person was visiting they would not be wearing the same outfit as all the other ladies.
Chase keefer (Hancock md)
To me it looks like a women’s jail and in the picture their a guy and a women hugging I think it the the guys grandmother that’s in jail .and the women to the far left might be the one responsible of getting her life back toegether the mother of the guy and this image was shot in Alabama .
Kelburn (MD)
Looks like the women is getting let out of prison and is saying goodbye to one of her inmate friends
Damien W (SKHS)
@Kelburn To sum it up, I feel like that's the whole background to this photo. There are only so many things that it could be.
ELA (MA)
We have a few ideas about what is going on in the picture. -He is hugging his grandmother while his mother looks on. -There are 2 people hugging in a rehab center. It might be visiting time. They are hugging their grandmother. There are bars on the windows and doors. They are all wearing white uniforms. -They are in a homeless shelter or jail. They are hugging because one of them is getting released and they are good friends.
Alyssa (NC)
I believe that this image was shot at the Alabama Department of Corrections. If you look closely at the back of the women's shirts you can depict these words. Based off of the image, this may be the women's division of the correction center, being that there are only females in the picture. I believe that the two women in the center are embraced in a hug, before the women in the middle left leaves, after being released. The women to the far left could be the representative of the newly released women and could be the one responsible for getting her life back and adjusted to her new way of living. Of course, there are many interpretations that could be made based off of the following image, however, these are just my predictions.

Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
Intermediate Photography class- We think this is an all women's psychiatric ward of the Alabama Dept of Corrections (as per the back of the shirt). We think the one woman is getting out-why the door is open and why she is getting a hug. The woman on the left maybe a social worker or that person's relative-looks like she might be ready to take pictures with her phone. There are bunk beds in the background-windows open, walls are pink. Most everyone is wearing white. Woman wearing belt maybe works there because belts usually aren't allowed in prison/corrections. Who is the woman in blue top in the background?
Annabelle N (SKHS)
@Photo class Villa Maria College I had not previously considered that this could be a psychiatric unit, which makes sense due to the pink walls and the setting being more relaxed than that of a typical prison or jail. Furthermore, I agree that the woman with the Alabama Dept. of Corrections shirt on is a worker due to the fact that she is wearing a belt. If it isn’t a rehab center it has got to at least be a minimum security unit. I also agreed that the woman facing us is getting released and the woman to the left is her social worker or family member.
Thomas Shackleford (Bladenboro, NC)
I see that the image shows us a minimum security Women's Correctional Facility in Alabama due to the fact that there pink walls, and that there are only women in the facility, along with the windows being open and the prisoners being able to be around one another. In addition, I also that there are two black women prisoners hugging possibly because they may be friends, and also because the older black woman may be going to her parole hearing to see if she would be eligible for parole.
Max Hudson (McLean, VA)
I think that a woman is being released from a women's prison in Alabama. The two women hugging, the women smiling on the right side, and the woman holding the phone (who could be taking some sort of photo) indicate that she could be being released from prison. The security cameras on the ceiling, the cell-like gate, the lock on the gate, the wooden beds, and the shirt that says "Alabama Dept. of Corrections" shows that this is probably a prison in Alabama, while the fact that there are only women in the photo seems to suggest that this is a women's prison.
Devin Dudley (Va)
I thinks it is a women getting out of prison. After a long time since there old.
Hunter (Troy)
@Devin Dudley I agree with you.
Daniella Burga-Cupen (North Carolina)
1. In the image, it seems to be a reunion at a prison. 2. It seems like a reunion because there are two people hugging. The fact that this is possibly taking place at a prison, makes it more believable to be a reunion. The words on one of the women's' shirts says "Alabama Dep. of Corrections". 3. I can see a woman standing by the people hugging. The woman is smiling and she seems happy.
Janet (USA)
I think it's an all women's jail. The people hugging each other are probably friends from back in the day who lost touch. It is located in Alabama.
Jennifer Gonzalez (West Bladen High School)
I think this is in some type of prison, there are bunk beds and most of them are wearing a white uniform. The 2 people hugging might be a reunion.
Karla Hinson (NC)
I think that this is a women's prison and it looks like there is more women in the room that might be in charge. the two women is reuniting together. They look like they haven't seen each other in a while.
Lauren (North Carolina)
I think that this is a women's prison and that the two women hugging have not seen each other for a while and they are reuniting. I feel like one of the women are about to leave this building and that they may not see each other again. I think that this department is somewhere in Alabama.
Haleigh Fields (North Carolina)
The picture seems to be taken in a prison. I think the back of the women's shirt says "Alabama Department of Corrections". The two women dressed in white seem to have not seen one another in a while. There is a women to the left of the women is holding a phone, possibly going to take a picture.
Morgan Skipper (West Bladen High, NC)
This picture shows two female inmates in what looks to be a women's prison hugging one another. Maybe they are good friends who were separated long ago.
Olivia (West Bladen High School)
This appears to be a prison, but with all women. The room is pink with many bunk beds and tables. Two ladies are hugging while another lady is standing back watching with her phone in her hand. These two ladies must not have been in contact for a while and are happy to see each other.
Mikayla Chatman (North Carolina)
looks like they are in jail and they just reunited
Kaytee B (west bladen high)
I think that they are both inmates & one of them is getting out & they are saying goodbye, because the surroundings look like a prison & there is a lady beside them that looks like she isn't an inmate.
Hailey (West Bladen High School)
I think that this is a picture of 2 people who haven't saw each other for a while are seeing each other in a prison again. The back of the shirts say ¨department of corrections¨, there are bunk beds, and a gate. I can see bunk beds and the fact that everyone in this picture are women.
Lauren Elgart (Pennsylvania)
In this picture I think it is some type of prison and someone is being let out. I see that everyone is wearing the same white uniform and they all have bunk beds. I also think that these to people hugging have been good friends and now that one is leaving they won't see each other for a long time. Also I can tell that she is leaving because the gate is open and there is a women that is holding the gate to let her out.
Travis (private)
looks like a women's prison
Shannon (Alabama)
As most of you have observed, it's definitely a women's prison in Alabama. However, I feel like both women are inmates and have just seen each other for the first time in a long while. They are giving each other a hug, but in front of the woman who's 8 charge, some shape, form, or fashion, they are hugging the only way they are allowed to hug. When someone who's not in charge isn't around, then they will give hugs. Not a "side hug", if you will. One of the ladies could be getting the chance to go before the board and see if she can get out. That's my interpretation of the picture.
Thomas Shackleford (Bladenboro, NC)
@Shannon I also think that the image is of a Women's Correctional Facility in Alabama, and that both are inmates and friends who haven't seen each other in a long time, along with the fact that one of the women could be getting their chance to go to their parole hearing in order to determine if they are able to be eligible for parole or not.
Pig (Icelend)
It’s a women prison a lot of cameras and a two persons huge and a girl with a phone so it’s not a prison
speech therapy room (Cincinnati, Ohio)
In this picture, there are two people hugging. We think that these two people are reuniting. It looks like they are workers in a jail. We see bunkbeds in the back, this makes us think that they sleep there. We noticed that all of them are wearing the same outfit.
Varmó Ryksuguhausar (Iceland)
These are mom and daughter and the mom just got in prison a women prison so they are hugging each other.
Sage Palmer (Pennsylvania)
I think that there are people reuniting, visiting, getting a surprise or something along those lines. I think they are in a prison, asylum or correction center (like a lot of the comments already said) because of the bunk beds and windows/entry ways with bars. I also think this prison/asylum is all girls because of the most obvious, there are no boys in sight and also the walls are pink.
Hailey (West Bladen High School)
@Sage Palmer I agree with you! I think your explanation is very logical.
anonymous (usa)
i think that a woman in black, on the left, is picking the old woman, in the middle, from jail as she has finished a prison sentence. The old woman is hugging what seems to be a prison guard with the initials 'authority of correction' on her shirt. As the old woman is leaving, she is bidding farewell to the guard.
Alexandria Awong (19462)
I think that the two people are reuniting after something that happened.  I'm guessing that they are good friends. In the background, people are dressed in white that are either sitting, standing, or possibility napping. By perceiving that there are black, metal or iron bars, I infer that the people who are wearing white clothes and shoes might be prisoners or mental patients.  There is also a person who is wearing a blue shirt with black pants, I think the blue shirt person might be a nurse. But, it seems more like that they are prisoners because, there are windows that are boarded up regarding where they sleep. I observe that there is a clock, beds, chairs, tables, a fan, lights, and women there.
Greg M. (LCMS)
This picture takes place in Alabama. I can tell because of the women's shirts say Alabama on them. This picture takes place in a correction center. I know this because their shirts say Alabama Department of Correction. Based on this evidence I can conclude that this picture takes place in Alabama Department of Correction.
Maria (Virginia)
@Greg M. I agree that this image takes place in Alabama and is a correction center.
Anna (Port Orchard, WA)
I think this is a photo of a woman in a women's correctional facility getting a visit from a family member or a friend. They look like they are in a jail/prison because there are bars as an entry to the room and bars on the windows. There also seems to be a security camera in the ceiling. For those reasons I think it is a jail.
Max (SKHS)
Universal statement; They are in A women's prison, and people are visiting them. Supporting evidence; They are in a women's prison because there looks to be only women in the picture. There also wearing uniforms, or at the very least the same thing. There are bars which tells you that there in A cell of some type. There are also visible beds so it tells you that they are staying there semipermanently. Also the type of clothing I think is common with prisons. There is also someone which can be assumed as one of the guards. She is hugging A lady that is in the prison and there is A person with A phone likely recording. This person I believe to be her daughter. There is also another visitor in the background as well. They are visitors because they are not wearing the prison uniform there in normal clothes. This could also be A rehab center, i'm not sure what those look like but it might be because the look on the lady's face as she is hugging the guard, also the lady with the camera looking happy might be explained by the lady in the hug getting clean. Closing statement; Why are the doors open in the room, also why are there classroom type tables and chairs.
Amaya V (SKHS)
The people in this photo look to be in some kind of prison. There are two people hugging and others sitting around. I noticed that the person on the right's shirt has the letters COR on the back. That may be a staff shirt and she may work in corrections. However she could also be in a visiting area and gives someone she knows a hug. I also noticed that the chairs are very similar to the ones at school.
Emma Davis (skhs)
I think that one person that is giving the hug is in an asylum of some sort and the other is just visiting them. The lady facing the camera looks to be very happy but also sad.
James F (SKHS)
This is a mixed ethnicity, women correctional facility or mental treatment center. The only people in the picture are female, they all have matching clothes, bunk beds, and open bathrooms. A woman is saying goodbye to This is a mixed ethnicity, women correctional facility or mental treatment center. A woman is saying goodbye to a loved one or someone who they made a connection with while inside the facility.
Anna (Port Orchard, WA)
@James F I think it's interesting how you think they're saying goodbye, because I thought they were saying hello and visiting. Also I didn't notice the open bathrooms, so I thought that was really interesting how you noticed that.
cadence l. (lms)
a mother and daughter are in jail and one of them is getting out but the other is staying. or they're having some type of free time but they're still in their rooms. or someone could be getting out of jail and haven't seen their mom in a long time because they have been in jail.
Ava S (South Kitsap High School)
I see two women hugging in a room that is pink with bars they're all wearing the same thing. One of the women have the word correction on her shirt. So I'm assuming that its a women correctional facility. I think maybe the women are reuniting, I think they maybe be family cause one looks like a grandmother of some sort.
Morgan M. (SKHS)
I see multiple women, most of them weaing white uniforms that say "correctional" on the back of their shirts. They are in a room that is secured by black metal bars and there are bunkbeds lined up in a row against the walls. This leads me to believe that they are in a womens correctional facility and the person is giving her a hug because it is her last day at the correctional facility. I think this because I see that there is someone there next to them waiting to possibly take her home.
Trenton M. (SKHS)
I see a pink tinted room filled with beds. there is also a prison door in the frame so with this info i'm led to believe that this photo is being shot in a prison for women. all the people that are in the shot are women and in the center of the picture i see 2 women hugging each other so I assume that one of them must have been released while another women dressed formally stands close and watches them intently waiting.
Dawson M (SKHS)
I see about 10 people and 8 of them have all white clothing and 2 with regular clothing on. They seem to be in some sort of prison. The man focus is theses two inmates that are hugging and i think they are somehow related or know each other well and it seems one is a older lady and the other could be a man or another woman and they're meeting around the time of visiting hours.
Jeremiah McMoore (SKHS)
To me, it looks like some sort of prison for women, and the older woman is being let out to her family. I say it's a prison because the doors and windows are bared.
Faith J (SKHS)
This picture appears to be taken at some sort of women's prison. It appears that there is a lady hugging someone else who could be a friend or relative. She This could be a prison because of the bars and the way the beds are. The lady looks not overly excited, but she isn't crying.
Evan S (Troy Middle School)
@Faith J You may be correct, but in my vision it has nothing to do with a prison. At first glance it would seem like that, but thoroughly observing it has changed my mind to think that it is a insane asylum. It gives of an aura of that kind.
Daniella Green (Diaz) (kentucky)
I think the mother abnd daughter are both in jail for killing the mothers husband.Because the husband was an abusive and alcholic plus he had anger issues. So they killed him,but the mother only had about 10 year while the daughter had a life sentence. The daughter had a longer time because her finger prints where on most of the evidence. But the daughter thought she cleaned up all of the evidence. So they when to court and the case lasted for 9 months.
Victory J. (LMS)
I think the people in the picture are hugging because they are saying goodbye to each other. They are friends and one of them is getting released while the other has to stay in prison. I also think the lady standing next to them is going to escort her out. Another thing that I think could be happening is that the other people in the picture are prisoners who are having some kind of visitation time.
Casey M. (SKHS)
In this picture, a woman is hugging her daughter in a women's prison. I say this because if you look at the two women, you can tell one is significantly older than the other one. I can tell this is a prison because there is a cell and all the women are wearing uniforms. You can also see bars over the windows. I think it may be visitor's hour or something because there are women wearing normal outfits in the room with phones.
Kristoff Cain (Port orchard, Wa)
this looks like a corrective/rehab centre for women, and the older lady may be reuniting with a family member or her councilor.
Rhiannon H. (SKHS)
I think two people in a corrections facility are hugging with a woman in civies watching. They might be reuniting or saying goodbye based on their body language. They might be related somehow, the elder person might be the younger woman's grandparent or even parent or a family friend. The younger is wearing the corrections facility uniform while the other is wearing civies. The younger is probably a woman because as far as i can see, a few of the people in the background are women and the walls are pink.
Ryan H (SKHS)
i think this picture is of a women's prison. i think one of the prisoners is being let out. the person on the left clearly isn't a prisoner. i think she is coming to collect one of the prisoners. all the prisoners are sad to watch one of them go.
Ashley Flores (school)
I think that the woman is related to the man or they just know each other from somewhere but I think that this is like a type of jail specifically for woman because as we can see in the picture there are lots of woman there, this could also probably be a place where woman stay at if they did something but not necessarily something bad,it could have been an accident or something they did without knowing it was wrong in anyway.Something that I can see is that all the woman there are wearing all white and that makes it seem like they're in jail but what if this isn't a jail?
Savanna M (SKHS)
I think this is a prison for women, judging on the fact that everyone in the picture is a woman and they are wearing prison uniforms. I think the lady is hugging the guard because she let them have a visitor, or she is very grateful for something.
Sam M (SKHS)
I think the older looking lady is getting out of prison/jail. I think this because the main people in the photo look happy which is what most people would be if they were getting out of prison/jail. The correctional officer might be hugging her because she is excited that the lady is finally getting out.
Mystery M (SKHS)
I see two women hugging in a corrections facility that could be an all womens one? The two woman could possibly be hugging because one of them is getting out but i dont think it is for a sad reason because the women on the right is smiling. I can tell this is a corrections facility because the women on the right is wearing a shirt that says "cor" which could mean corrections.
L. B. (SKHS)
I see two people hugging, I think those are women because in the background there are women and it looks like the bedroom in a prison. I think one of these two is free now and can go home, therefore they are hugging because she is leaving.
Chris P Bacon (Leestown Middle)
I have two theories i will list now. I think they are in a correctional institution and they know each other some how and i believe that the person who has the belt is maybe a well known guard or family member and they are visiting maybe during a open time or They are in a homeless shelter and the guy with the belt gave them a lot of money or food or maybe even offered to let the person hes's hugging to live in his or her house.
Justice Berry (Leestown middle school)
i think the old lady is getting out and she is leaving and hugging her prison buddy before she leaves. I also feel like the they are in a low end detention center
Karissa G. (SKHS)
I think this is some sort of jail or prison because of the bars and bunk beds. The shirts they are wearing also looks like it could say something about a corrections facility. I think the older lady facing the camera is maybe getting out of the facility and she is saying goodbye to everyone. The lady holding the phone is smiling which could indicate that the two are saying goodbye.
Alexis (SKHS)
it looks like someone thats an inmate at a prison or something and their hugging someone good bye.
Mattie F. (LMS)
I think the person on the left hugging the other person is going into some type of prison or cell. The person on the left that's taking a picture looks happy so I think this is a happy scene. The place looks worn and older. The person on the right hugging the other person is probably some sort of staff because there are others in the place that have the same shirt. There are also windows with bars that suggest that it is a prison/jail type of facility.
Rhiannon H. (SKHS)
@Mattie F. That makes a lot of sense
Casey M. (SKHS)
@Mattie F. I agree with your statement about this being a happy scene. It seems like some sort of reunion to me since the women are hugging and the woman on the far left does look really happy.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
This appears to be a prison for women, based on the people in the picture and the color of the walls. I think it is a prison because of the bars you see in the front and the beds lines up along the wall. You can see two people hugging as if something great just happened or they haven't seen each other in a long time. I think the case might be either one of their jail sentences was reversed or one of them is getting out of jail. They seem to be dressed similarly, so maybe they are saying goodbye as one prisoner leaves.
Sam M (SKHS)
@Emilia AOSE This makes a lot of sense. Because of what they are wearing and what is around them it would make sense that they are in a prison or jail. And like you said it looks like something good did just happen.
Amaya V (SKHS)
@Emilia AOSE I can see where you came to this conclusion. The picture reminds me of a happy moment because of the woman smiling in the back.
Quinten Webster (Kentucky)
I believe that this picture shows 2 cell mates making up for something. For eample maybe they had a fight and talked through it. Another senerio would maybe be 2 friends meeting again in jail. For example they were friends before they were in jail and they now have seen each other after alot of years. Another senerio could be 2 jail mates hugging after playing a bored game.
Faith J (SKHS)
@Quinten Webster What makes you think that there is a board game involved?
David (LMS)
I think there are two prisoners that are reuniting because they have not seen each other in a long time. I know this because the two women look very sad but happy at the same time. I think they might have been separated or they might have been in different prisons. I can tell that there are only girls in here based on the background. This looks happy because there is a lady in the background looking at the people hugging and smiling. She does not look like a prisoner based on what she has an what she is wearing.
Mystery M (SKHS)
@David I dont think the women hugging on the right is a prisoner because her shirt/outfit does not match what the women on the left is wearing. I could be mistaken, but at first glance, i thought she was one of the staff members.
Audrey G. (leestown middle school)
It looks like they're in a prison, and they look related so one of them might be visiting them during visiting hours. They are wearing all white, one of them might be an officer and one might be an inmate. There is women behind them, so it looks like a women's prison.
Dawson M (SKHS)
@Audrey G. yeah some visiting hours
11 (school)
I think that this lady has served her time in prison and now she is leaving
L. B. (SKHS)
@11 I agree, the woman in the left looks like she is waiting happily for her and is going to pick her up because she is free now
Emma Davis (skhs)
@11 I kind of agree but not with the prison part. I think she was in rehab.
Ava S. (LCMS)
The woman and the man are related in some kind of way. I know this because of the look on the woman’s face and the way she is hugging the other person. The man was gone for an amount of time and the woman is very happy to see him. I know this because it seems like there are tears running down her face but there is also a smile. In addition, there is another woman on the side taking a picture. The man is the woman’s son. I know this because the woman has a big smile and tears running down her face. In addition, she is hugging him. Based on the evidence, the man has just gotten home from somewhere that he has been for a long time and the woman is very excited/ happy to see her son.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Ava S. Your predictions of the relationships of the people don't quite make sense. There is no evidence and there is no way to tell whether they are related or close friends, or anything.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
This looks like some kind of prison. The woman in the background indicate that the prison looks to be for women. One prisoner is hugging someone dressed differently from the rest. The person dressed differently has a belt on, along with jeans, and words on the back of their shirt, but they also are dressed in white. This could indicate that she is not a prisoner or is somehow different from the rest. There is also some kind of women who is in the background smiling at this interaction. She is clearly not a prisoner and is not wearing white clothing. She also is clearly a part of the situation. Whatever seems to be going on seems to also have the attention of the other inmate, so this cannot happen often. My guess is this is some kind of reunion and the two people hugging have not seen each other in a while.
Daisy T (LCMS)
In this picture, I can see two ladies hugging each other. I can tell that they are sentimental by their facial expressions I believe that the lady with the white hair looks sad. Something else I can see is that they possibly got separated for a long time and they are hugging each other because they haven’t seen each other in a while. Although, another thing is the lady with the belt could be leaving the facility. I think this because of the lady behind them that is wearing a suit and paperwork in her hands.
Lindsay J (LCMS)
The picture is taken place in a jail. I know this because there are bars around the people inside like they are forced to be there. In the picture, the girl hugging looks like they are saying bye like they are never going to see each other again. I know this because they are hugging very tightly like they don’t want to let go and look like one of the girls is leaving the jail. One of the ladies is leaving jail. I know this because the ladies in the picture are hugging and some lady is looking at them with a happy look and she is not in the uniform it looks like she is going to take the person home that is leaving the jail. Based on the evidence the picture is taking place in jail and one of the girls that are hugging each other is leaving the jail and going home.
Hayden S. (SKHS)
I see what seems to be a jail or a prison. The reason why I say that is there is metal bars and the women are all wearing similar attire. I also think this might be the visitor area because people are embracing one another.
Ashley Flores (school)
@Hayden S. ok,yes It does seem like they're in a jail i agree with that but my question is what if these women are there but not because of a crime the committed?
Jordan J (LCMS)
They are at a correction facility. I know this because they are in a jail cell that has bars on the windows. The woman is leaving the facility. I know this because she is saying bye to one of the “Prison mates” and her mom is there smiling. The facility is old. I know this because the paint is chipping off the bars. Therefore there is a woman leaving an old correction facility.
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Jordan J How do you know that the woman is hugging her mom?
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Thank you everyone for your comments today! I so appreciated hearing your differing opinions and seeing respectful agreeing and disagreeing. (@Haliegh M. thinks this might be set in a correctional facility, whereas @Isaiah F. wonders if it could be a mental health facility or a nursing home. @Miram G thinks one person might be saying goodbye to a friend, whereas @OakleyP thinks the two people hugging might be related. @Jessica B and @Liberty T agree many people here might be wearing uniforms.) Continue to look closely at this picture, and remember to back up your ideas with evidence (you can always ask yourself - “what do I see that makes me say that?”). This week, the caption that accompanies this picture will be revealed on Wednesday afternoon. Once you have read more information, try returning to the image and asking yourself “what more can I find?”. Until the next time we see you here at What’s Going On in This Picture, have a happy holiday weekend!

In this picture I think this is take place in metal heath facility for women only and the hugging in the middle is mother and daughter relationship maybe the daughter hasn't seen her own mother for a long time. Also I saw the woman on the left is could be the mother's supervisor. I noticed that they all have bunk beds and widows. Its daytime and the room have fans. I feel like it's a happy atmosphere.
kyri (chs)
In this picture there are 2 people hugging. And it's all barred up and the windows are open. So in my opinion they are in prison. You can tell by their shirts. And there is a worker taking a picture. And there are 12 people, 10 in all white and white shoes. It’s an all women's prison because there are pink walls. Also there are cell doors so it’s a prison.
Connor H. (SKHS)
I see two women, one noticeably older than the other, in white uniforms hugging each other. I also see a woman smiling at them who looks like she might be a lawyer of some sort for the older lady. I believe they are in some sort of women's correction center. I say that because of what their shirts say, they're all women, there are a bunch of bunk beds, and there are bars on the windows.
Emilia AOSE (AOSE)
@Connor H. what do you mean by a womens correction center?
Madison Z (SKHS)
i think this photo says a lot, when you look at the old lady hugging she looks happy, it is possible that her time in jail is up and on the left hand side there is a lady with a phone she cloud be her daughter or even a reporter
KathleenAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth's)
@Madison Z Why do you think her jail time is up and not something else?
Max (SKHS)
@Madison Z I think the lady on the left is her daughter and not A reporter because if she was there would be more perfeconal equipment then just A phone.
owen callaghan (skhs)
obusliy this is a insane asilem and the older woman is seeing her frend the younger woman and its on tv becase of the reporter
Ryan H (SKHS)
@owen callaghan what makes you say the woman is a reporter.
OK (CHS)
I think that the setting is in a mental hospital for women do to the fact that all the people you find in the pic is women. The girl hugging the person looks like a women due to the hair being long ish when I first took a gander i saw a belt and I assumed a guy but then i realized that women where them to and due to the fact that they have long hair proving that fact that this is a women only hospital and that all the workers there are women.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
It looks like they're in a prison somewhere, and the woman being hugged is an inmate. From what I'm reading on the other person's shirt she looks like she may be a corrections officer or something. It seems like it could be a hug of maybe forgiveness or possibly they know each other. The woman in black standing by them seems to be happy, so I think that they're definitely happy to see each other. Maybe the hugged inmate is being released.
Savanna M (SKHS)
@Emma AOSE I agree with you, I also think the lady smiling at them has something to do with their happiness.
Miram G (SKHS)
They are in some type of women’s correction center and there are two women hugging. Most of them are wearing white uniforms except for two women to the left. I believe the lady with the grey hair is getting out and she is hugging/saying goodbye to a worker that she had grown close to. I think the women standing next to them in civilian clothes is there to pick her up, and they are all happy she is finally getting out. I believe the woman with long dark hair is a worker because she has a tshirt with what could be her position or the name of the facility on he back and she was standing right next to the gate. I think the woman with grey hair is getting out because she looks very happy and was walking towards the gate but stopped to hug the worker goodbye. There are also many women in the back sitting in chairs or around tables, along with another woman in civilian clothes, so I think it is a visiting center where people can visit the women in the facility.
Haliegh M. (SKHS)
I think this is a correction center because of the bars around the door that is open. Also there are many bunks with other women on them. The lady with the phone is probably a lawyer who told the old lady she was finally able to leave.
Trenton M. (SKHS)
@Haliegh M. yes i agree with what you think. the lawyer is patiently waiting for the other two to finish hugging
Tucker T (SKHS)
The picture shows two people hugging and one who's just standing there. the two hugging one is old and the other is younger the older woman looks like she stays in this facility and the younger woman looks like she works here, because her shirt is printed and looks professional with the tucked in shirt and belt. I can only assume that the other woman is related to the older woman somehow.
Isaiah F. (SKHS)
I see 2 woman hugging in a room with lots of bunk beds and other people, most of the people are wearing the same outfit and 2 are not. There are cameras on the ceiling. The room door is iron bars. They might be in a mental hospital or a nursing home because there are iron bars and most people are wearing the same uniform.
OakleyP (SKHS)
I think that they are in a county jail in Alabama. There are bunks in the background, and people wearing shirts that from what I can see say "Alabama dept. of corrections". the place is well lit and looks peaceful. I think that the older lady hugging the other person is a mother/grandmother visiting their child/grandchild, with either a siling/mother to the person with the dept of corrections watching, while holding her phone. It seems minimal security, so maybe a county jail since it is peaceful, small, the windows are open, and the door is wide open. There are some cameras, as I can count five of them, but everyone is behaving. there are the people hugging, people sitting at a table, people sitting on beds and a person looking out the window.
Liberty T (SKHS)
I see multiple women in this room that is sectioned off with bars. Most women are wearing white pants, shirts, and shoes while some other women are wearing normal clothes. There are multiple bunk beds in the background. I believe that because of the bars on the doors and windows, as well as the clothes the women are wearing suggest this is some sort of correctional facility. The main subject in the picture are two women hugging each other. It may be a greeting or a goodbye. There is also a woman wearing different clothes that is smiling at the two women with her phone out, maybe taking photos.
Blake J (SKHS)
It looks like two women hugging in a jail cell. The person with their back to us looks like a staff member, because of the shirt and jeans. On the back of the shirt it looks like it says corrections, further backing up the point of it being a detention center. The staff member may be retiring and has built a good relationship with the inmate. The person in the left looks the the facilitator of the visit.
Ripley E. (SKHS)
There are two ladies hugging with darker skin both in white uniforms. The lady behind them is wearing a normal work type outfit as she smiles at the scene. The words on the back of the shirts seems to be english or another europeon based language. There are bar door and the windows are also covered in bars. There are also other people also wearing the same white uniform. The two ladies hugging seem to be related or friends. There are bunk beds in the background. They seem to be in some sort of jail or possibly a mental hospital. There is another woman in a blue shirt walking around in the back so these women also in the barracks seem to be mostly harmless. One of the women, without her shirt tucked in, could be leaving with her relative or whoever the lady smiling off to the side is and is saying goodbye to the worker who helped her or was nice to her.
Eric S. (skhs)
they are in a prison and it looks like she got good new and she is getting out of there. there is sic women 4 look like there inmates and two of them do not. people are hugging. she might be getting out and shes saying her goes byes to the other inmates.
Natalie J (SKHS)
The pictures appears to be of two people hugging in a prison of some sort. However, seeing as nobody is is really locked up, and there is a group room, it seems to be less of a prison and more of a woman only rehab center. This center is not in the US, as the wording on the back of their shirts is not in English. Perhaps this center is in Mexico, as it seems to be Spanish. The windows are all open, showing that it could be in a hot climate. The room is pink and everyone in the picture appears to be female, leading me to believe that this is a Women's rehab center or jail of a sort. There is a lady waiting for one of the people being hugged, so perhaps one of them is getting released and is saying goodbye to another inmate. In the background, there is another lady not wearing a uniform. Maybe someone else is being released.
Ripley E. (SKHS)
@Natalie J I like the idea about the rehab center. If they were in Mexico and the wording is Spanish, why are there other possibly lighter colored skin people?
Jessica B (SKHS)
I think this is a correctional instatution. I think this because there are multiple people wearing the same "uniforms". I think maybe the women is getting released so she is hugging one of her friends or someone that helped her get clean or sober or on the right path. Also another clue is that they are all women and in nursing homes you will see men and women so this could be a women's correctional instatute.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Jessica B what do you think the words on the person giving the hug might mean? Why do you think this person is also wearing white?
Kennedy I (SKHS)
I that the person getting hugged with the shirt with the writing and the back was possibly in jail, because it shows a cell where they are at, and the lady hugging them is probably a family member or a close friend that was coming the visit the person in jail. On the windows around the room it looks like there are bars, and there are bunk beds lined up against the walls, and there is a camera on the ceiling. The lady standing off to the left is dressed more formal so maybe she is the persons lawyer.
Perspectives II (Montreal)
@Kennedy I We think that this photo is taken in a detention centre. We see this as different from jail; jail is about punishment and correctional centres are about helping you reintegrate into society. The bars, the bunk beds, and the uniforms that say "Department of Correctional..." led us to believe this. We do not think it is jail because of the open doors. We think that the older woman in white is leaving the facility since the door is open, and she is hugging her friend to say goodbye. The woman without uniform is recording this emotional moments. Because she does not have a uniform this role is ambiguous.
Sebastian A (SKHS)
I think that in this photo the older woman is finally leaving prison. And the lady that is holing her, hugging, is saying goodbye. Also by the way that they are right at the gates. Plus there is a lady waiting for them to say goodbye.
Emma AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Sebastian A What makes you feel so strongly that it's a goodbye? Maybe it's the first time they've seen each other in years and it's a happy hello.
Kina P. (SKHS)
I can assume that this photo was taken in a Women Correction Center, My guess is that one of the inmates is being released. The person she is hugging is one of the security is my guess. And, the woman smiling next to them is going to be taking her home. I still wonder who the woman in the blue blouse is, she could be a social worker or something similar because she is not in any type of uniform
Brianna A (SKHS)
I think that these women are in a jail or mental hospital based on the bunk beds and jail doors this photo was taken from. i also see that the elderly women is hugging the younger women while the women dressed in nicer clothes watch. i think that this maybe some kind of program because u can see another women in the background in the photo wearing nice cloths to. there must be a lot of women there based on the bunk beds in the room.
Ronan W (Skhs)
I see there are two older women hugging in what looks to be a penitentiary these women may have just settled a feud because every one seems to bee looking at them. It seems they do not have very good living conditions and it is an all women being held there.
Reagan M (SKHS)

In this picture, I see and older woman hugging a younger woman. They seem to be in a trusted, open, female jail. The windows are open with tons of sunlight and there are tons of bunkbeds close together. The older woman might be a patient at the jail and her friend or family member is coming to visit, or vice versa with the younger woman. They seem to be fairly happy to see eachother which leads me to belive its someone close she knows. I also think its a womans jail beacuse I only see women and the walls and beds are pink.
Kelton R. (SKHS)
I see two people hugging each other like they're saying hello or goodbye. I think it's two old friends seeing each other again in some sort of facility based on the bars. I also see a woman on the phone in the background, so maybe it's a prison and the woman is telling one of them that they're allowed to go.
Ben A. (SKHS)
@Kelton R. I agree because the walls are bright colors so maybe the facility is the Alabama department of correction i say that because of the back of the peoples shirts so im guessing they're saying that the girl in white is free to go
Addyson (Troy, MO)
I see two people hugging which makes me think that they are friends or that one is thanking the other.
Jayson (Mo)

@Jayson it does look nice and a happy moment but dont you think theres more going o in this picture.

@Jayson, thank you for your comment this morning! @owen callaghan, thank you for your reply. You both are in agreement, and think something about this picture looks nice. What do you see that makes you say that?
Nathanial (TMS)
I see two older women hugging each other and a news reporter recording. I think all this is taking place at a nursery home or like a karate facility? Two best friends meet again.
Sebastian A (SKHS)
@Nathanial I don't think that this is a nursery home, because there are bunk beds everywhere. And prisons have that, and nursery homes don't.
Madison Z (SKHS)
@Nathanial how do you know she is a news reporter
Karissa G. (SKHS)
@Nathanial What makes you say this is at a nursery home or a karate facility?
João Muanis (Rio de Janeiro (RJ, Brazil))
I see an old woman hugging a younger woman. I think that the younger woman is a guard of a hospice, where the old woman was hosted, and as she (old woman) was there for a long time they became friends. I thought this, because the girl who is sit on the bed (top right corner) is with the same outfit as the old woman, and the young woman is wearing the same clothes as her coworkers (down right corner). I can also see a journalist or a news reporter standing next to the old lady (left corner), who is probably there to notice something about the woman who is lefting the hospice.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@João Muanis - thank you for examining this image with us today. It sounds like you’re considering who these people might be to each other, and where they might be. You are inferring they might be in a hospice. You also imagine the two people in the foreground might be friends. I hear you also thinking the person on the left might be a news reporter. What do you see that makes you say that person might not be part of the hospice, but instead might be a reporter?
Hugo Dart's Class (Rio de Janeiro)
i think this place is a prison, and the woman in white baggy clothes is leaving, saying goodbye to her jailer who might be considered her friend, and the woman on the phone just said that she is free. I see a cell grid and people with the same clothes and several beds together, and the woman is wearing a uniform.
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
@Hugo Dart's Class How do you know they're saying goodbye? Maybe they're saying hello.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Alexa AOSE - thank you for your reply to @Hugo Dart's Class. @Hugo Dart's Class - it seems like you're thinking about what action might be taking place here and imagining a story to explain the scene. You're curious about the relationship of the two people in the foreground, thinking they might be someone who is leaving and someone who works at the jail. @Alexa AOSE - you are posing a question, wondering if the person in the foreground is coming (saying hello) or leaving (saying goodbye). @Hugo Dart's Class - what do you see that makes you say one figure might be saying goodbye to her friend? And @Alexa AOSE - what do you see that makes you question whether they are saying goodbye or greeting each other?
Jessica B (SKHS)
@Hugo Dart's Class i agree with your statement also because they are only women.

Thank you everyone for your comments so far. Among other topics of discussion, I am hearing some agreement and disagreement from folks about where this picture might be set. @fatima, @josue manuel, @Arsalan khattak, and @ulises think it might be in a nursing home. @Madison and @Emma think they might be in a mental health facility. @Sabine.Ayano_Murai - you sound like you are imagining several possibilities. And @Liz - you are confused by the setting, wondering about the prison-like bars that you think might contrast with your observation of a cheerful background. What more can we find? If you disagree or agree with someone, feel free to start a conversation by hitting the reply button!

I think that it is a prision, and that there is a prisioner and an officer hugging each other. the bars and the matching clothes made me get to this conclusion. I can see people in normal clothes and some chairs, and maybe the ones in different clothes are visitants.
Reagan M (SKHS)
I see a woman with a phoe maybe informing a jail member that she? he is free.
Liberty T (SKHS)
@thais I agree that this is some sort of prison. You said that you believed the people hugging were prisoner and officer, I did not see it that way and was curious as to how you got to that conclusion. Also, it would make sense that the people in different clothes would be visitors. Good job on putting those pieces together.
Blake J (SKHS)
@thais I like you're examination of their surroundings
Sharon Frier (Florida)
The students at Nova HS in my language group think that this picture is taken at the Alabama Department of Corrections, in a minimum security prison. The people in the photo have on belts, which shows that they are low risks, as well as the windows are open. There are many people living in the room, also showing that the people there are not very dangerous and would likely not hurt each other.

Liz (School)
It is so confusing the bars reminds me of a prison but it is so bright and cheerful in the background almost every one wearing the same thing they left the gate open and people seem to be fine and the other tow seem so happy like ones finally leave or visiting her and people don’t seem worried at all
Kennedy I (SKHS)
@Liz Maybe everything is more open because there are people coming in to visit the prisoners. That might be why there are a few other people in the room that aren't wearing the same clothes as the rest of the inmates.
Miram G (SKHS)
@Liz I was also a little surprised at how happy everyone looked in the background, especially with the bright pink walls and lots of open windows.

I think that there is a woman who is becoming released from a mental hospital. I think this because the place looks nice and happy with the walls painted pink. But I see bars from like a prison cell and I see that she is hugging a correctional officer.
Brianna A (SKHS)
@Emma I agree with you because i think the same thing. the two women are hugging and maybe because she has been released. the walls probably do indicate that its a safe place. the women in nicer cloths is happy to.
Alyssa (School)
@Emma I agree that this could be a mental hospital because the place looks warm and happy and that’s what you look for in a mental hospital, also for it to be a happy place for people to get help that they need.
Juvy Inocando (School)
I see 2 women hugging. I also see someone looking at them hugging and smiling and shes holding her phone probably taking pictures. I see bunk beds and other people sitting, or walking around. I said this because this is what I saw in the picture.

I see bunk beds soo I think they are visiting people who are currently living there. Maybe its a prison/mental institution-like place or something like that.
Shiann N. (SKHS)
I believe they are in the department or corrections in Alabama based on the back of the woman's shirt and that it must be an all woman prison.I can infer this because the walls are pink and they are all wearing white i cans see that there is minimal security and that there are a few woman in normal clothes that look happy and that i can tell that the older woman hugging is leaving based on the woman on the left smiling and the open cell as well as that might be the good behavior room based on the things they have.
Estrella. R (SKHS)
i believe this is at some type of all women correction facility, i could very well be wrong but the shirt says "Alabama dept. of corrections" the older women looks as though she is happy to be leaving there are 2 other women there so they very well cold be visiting or she could be some type of therapist. the security seems to be low with the gate fully open but i am still wondering if this is what it is then, why are the other women aloud in the cell with them? is there not some type of room?
Emma (Missouri)
@Estrella. R I think you are correct good job.
Madison (Missouri)
@Estrella. R I have to agree with what you ar saying I was think ping almost the exact same thing ;)
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Madison and @Emma - thank you for your replies to @Estrella. R's comment. I appreciate seeing you respond to each other! It sounds like @Madison and @Emma agree with @Estrella. R's interpreation that this might be a correctional facility. @Estrella. R - you have some questions! What do you see that makes you wonder why others are allowed in this same space, or why there's not another room?
Tierra B. (SKHS)
In this picture it appears to be at some type of women's correctional center. i can tell because of the uniforms and the set up of the building. You can also see that that in some way what's going on is meaningful, because the two woman are hugging and the woman behind them is smiling. One question i have is what type of correctional center is it? It doesn't appear to be very high security because of the gates being open.
Ethan C. (SKHS)
i think one of these women is getting ready to leave the correction center, it seems this way because there is a lawyer looking woman on the left side of the photo and the women hugging seem to be very happy.
Calum C. (SKHS)
I think this is in a women's correctional facility, judging by the shirts and bars, and I think the older woman has just got out of a long term sentence. Her family is happy for her return and the woman getting out of jail is hugging one of the employees as a form of gratitude.
Sophia C. (SKHS)
I can assume this a department of correction because the women have that writing on the back of their shirt. There are two women who are in casual clothing while the rest are in an all white uniform. I believe the two hugging are saying goodbyes as one is being released because the gate is wide open. People around are happy for this as most of them are smiling.
Chase K. (SKHS)
This photograph was set in a female rectification focus. I know this in light of the fact that the ladies are wearing shirts that state "redress" and I derive that it's an adjustments focus uniform. There's additionally a cell entryway and cells are as a rule in detainment facilities. There is likewise a lady meeting her companion or relative in the remedies office. I know this in light of the fact that the ladies confronting the camera in the embrace doesn't appear to wear a similar uniform so she could be meeting somebody. This revisions office is in Alabama. I know this on the grounds that on the uniform it says "Alabama Branch of Rectifications." In this way, this is a females redresses office in Alabama and a lady is meeting a companion or family in there.
Alycia L (SKHS)
In this picture we see many women in what seems to be a correction facility. We see many women wearing the same outfit or uniform except for two women. In the back we also see multiple bunk beds which is another reason I think it is some sort of jail cell. Although in jail they wouldn't be able to sleep in the same room so I'm wonder what else kind of facility it could be.
Ethan D (SKHS)
On the back of the woman's shirt is says "Alabama department of correction". It seems to be a lower security area, since there are an abundance of roaming residents and windows. This may either be a visiting time or a resident being freed from the facility and meeting their relative/family member. It may be a visiting period because there are more people dressed in street clothes in the background.
anthony s (skhs)
It looks like an inmate is being released from an Alabama state prison. i can tell she is being released because one women is wearing regular clothes while the other who is saying goodbye is still in traditional prison jumpsuit. I can tell there in Alabama because it says it on the back of there jumpsuit. The person standing to the left might be a parole officer.
Joshua O (SKHS)
I think its a prisoner that is now because there is a person no in a jump suit probably there kid thats picking them up from prison to bring them home and her prison friend is giving her a hug because they became close in prison and now she i leave while she has to stay a wait out the sentence. What do you guys think?
Deakin (portorchard, WA)
i believe this is a correction facility, the back ground looks like a salon maybe ,i think these two women are saying goodbye to one another because one is being released .
Lauren T (SKHS)
From many comments I've read, people seem to know what's going on. On the back of most of the woman's shirts it says Alabama Department of Correction. It seems a lady being hugged that is probably being released and escorted out by the lady watching her hug her friend. They are most likely friends from being in the correction department together.
Elijah M (SKHS)
I believe this is someone leaving a woman's department of corrections and I think its in Alabama because you can almost make out the word on top of the lady in the picture getting hugged. This is a couple years old and I can tell because the lady's phone is outdated compared to today. the lady on the left getting hugged I think is leaving because she is facing the door and the lady that is dressed normally is next to her. Also to show that she is leaving to door is wide open and everyone seems happy for her.
Shelby B (SKHS)
In this photo there are women hugging. I believe that these people are in a correctional facility. I say this because on the shirts it say department of correction. I think these ladies are friends and they are hugging goodbye. On the left of the ladies hugging there is a normally dresses lady. I think this lady is there to pick up one of the people hugging.
daedae (skhs)
it looks she getting released from somewhere
Victoria C. (SKHS)
The woman in this image are in a Alabama department of correction and the woman hugging the other one is wearing a know white shirt to the facility. The woman in the back in the blue is helping her friend learn how to fight in order to escape the facility so shes teaching her a jumping karate move.
Austin oyler (port orchard)
these women are in the women department of correction facility in Alabama. i know this because if you look on the back of the ladies shirt it seas it.this means that they have done something really bad and or they have been fighting in other departments and have been sent here to have a change in behavior because if you look through the cell doors that room is just one big cell with bunks and a small langue area. it pears that maybe one of the two women hugging are being sent home because you have the correctional uniform and you have the one lade in civilian uniform
Ella (SKHS)
it looks like the people are in a jail or something like that and the 2 woman hugging are related or good fiends that are reuniting the writing on the back of one girls shirt might say where they are but i cant read it
Josiah.O (SKHS)
This a correctional facility, and there is definitely a turn around in life happening. I think the women with her backside shown just got released from prison (inferring that she just walked through the door). There could also be visiting time going on since the women that are not in uniforms are interacting with the ones that are in uniforms. The other inmates watching have smiles on their faces, the joy of being free is something special to them. The photographer who could be a friend or family member just knew that this was gonna be a special moment between all these people. The pink walls also make me believe that this is an all women's wing in the facility.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Josiah.O - thank you for your comment today! It sounds like you're thinking this might be a special moment. You’re noticing the smiles you see here, the implied motion through the door of the person with their back to us, and the joy you perceive from this image. You are even wondering about the photographer’s relationship to the people in the picture. What do you see that makes you say the photographer might be a friend or a family member?
Brayden P. (LCMS)
11/18/19 These women are in a department of correction in Alabama. I know this because it says it on the back of each woman’s shirt. This means that they must have done something wrong to be entered into this department. One of the ladies that are hugging is leaving the correction department. I know this because one woman in the center is dressed normally, hinting to the fact that she is coming to get the woman that is being released. The woman in the shirt that has the Alabama Department of Correction on it is saying goodbye to another woman in the department of correction. In this department, there is really bad security. I know this because the cell doors are wide open--someone could just get up and walk out. Based on this evidence, there is a woman that is about to be released from an Alabama Department of Correction that has really bad security.
daedae (skhs)
@Brayden P. yeah it's a jail
Lauren T (SKHS)
@Brayden P. I like that you infer your inferences as facts. Also that you support them with evidence.
Ethan C. (SKHS)
@Brayden P. im sorry but i disagree with you, when someone is being released from prison they have to open the cell and if this person is being released it will be closed very shortly after.
Lillie P (LCMS)
The setting the location is in is a correctional facility. I know this is a correctional facility because behind the women hugging is a cell. I also know the women are in a correctional facility because on the back of each women’s uniform is writing that states “Alabama Department of Correction”. The correctional facility is low-security. I know this because there are windows in the room. The people in the facility are not in the cell but are out of the cell roaming the room freely. The woman hugging the woman with white hair is being freed from the correctional facility. I know this because there is another woman next to the women hugging who is wearing normal clothes and is smiling at the woman hugging. That could mean that the woman is a relative of the other woman and is bringing her home. In addition, the women are hugging and smiling very gladly celebrating the fact that she is leaving the facility to go home. Based on the evidence, the women are in a low-security correctional facility and one of the women is being released from prison.
Vincent S. (LCMS)
The photo takes place in a low security, women correctional facility. I know this because all the people in this picture are women. Also, every single person in the picture that is in the place is wearing the same clothes, that say correction on the back. In addition, the cell is opened and there is not any security guards, which shows that there is not great security. This photo is taking place in Alabama. I know this because on the back of their shirts, you can see “ALA”. So you can infer that it says Alabama. One of the women is leaving the correctional facility. I know this because the cell is opened, which wouldn’t happen if no one was leaving. In addition, one of the women is hugging the other women, which shows that the woman is leaving. Based on this evidence, one of the women is leaving a low security, correctional facility located in Alabama.
Joshua O (SKHS)
@Vincent S. I agree with your statement because there is low security and it is in alabama because of the writing on her back and I do believe that someone is being released.
Kevin T. (LCMS)
This place is either a mental institution or a correctional facility. You can tell this because most of the people are wearing white uniforms, which is seen in institutions and there are metal bars along the door which could be used to keep people in. This facility is in Alabama. You know this because one of the workers has Alabama on the back of their shirt and it is very sunny, you normally see lots of sun in Alabama. Also, this facility is strictly for females. You know this because all the people in the facility are women. This is either a mental institution or a correctional facility in Alabama for women.
Elijah M (SKHS)
@Kevin T. I don't believe this is a mental institute because of the fact that everything is so open and there is no security. Also the windows probably wouldn't be open if this was a mental institute because there are a lot of cases of people trying to get out of those institutes so there would be more security than that and it would be more enclosed to keep everyone contained. I do however believe that it is a corrections facility for women because of the writing on the back of their shirts.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Kevin T. - thank you for joining this morning's discussion. I hear you also thinking about where this image might be taking place. You agree with others like @Marin G and @Uliana AOSE who think this might be set in Alabama because of their clothing, but you're also noting the amount of sunlight you see and thinking that might tell us more. What do you see that makes you say there's lots of sunlight here, as opposed to artificial light?
Tyler T (LCMS)
The people in the photo seem to be in a correctional facility. I know this because there are bars in the photo. In addition, all the people seem to be wearing the same thing, implying that it is a prison uniform. Two people in the picture seem to have been let out of the cell. I know this because the two “prisoners” are hugging. This implies that they have just been let out and are very happy. The people in this photo are being visited. I know this because there is one person that is not wearing the uniform. This could mean that she is the owner of this facility is letting them out and visiting them. Based on this information this is a correctional facility where the inmates are being let out or visited.
Connor B (LCMS)
All the people in this picture are females. I know this because none of the people in the facility are males. They are in a female correction facility. I know this because all of the people in this picture are females and are wearing some sort of jumpsuit to know who is a prisoner in the facility. This correction facility is a low-security facility. I know this because the cell door is wide open and all of the people there are grouped up together. Therefore this is a low-security women correction facility where all people there are women.
Daniel D (LMCS)
This picture takes place in a prison or a correctional facility. I know this because there are bars in the room and booths near the side that could contain telephones to talk to visitors. This photo also appears to be taken in the 2000s-2010s. I know this because this picture is taken in full color. This picture captures a woman being reunited with a friend or family member. I know this because no one is inside of the open bars and the two women are hugging as if they are happy. In conclusion, this photo, taken in the 2000s-2010s, captures a woman being reunited from a prison to a family member.
Ella (SKHS)
@Daniel D i agree with this but i dont see a phone in the picture
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Daniel D - thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations with us this morning! You are thinking a lot about the setting of this image - where it might be taking place, but also when. You’ve provided a specific date for us. Could you tell us more - what do you see that makes you say this probably took place in the early 2000s or even quite recently in the 2010s?
Marin G (LCMS)
This photo was set in a female correction center. I know this because the women are wearing shirts that say “correction” and I infer that it’s a corrections center uniform. There’s also a cell door and cells are usually in prisons. There is also a woman meeting her friend or family member in the corrections facility. I know this because the women facing the camera in the hug doesn’t seem to be wearing the same uniform so she could be meeting someone. This corrections facility is in Alabama. I know this because on the uniform it says “Alabama Department of Corrections.” So, this is a females corrections facility in Alabama and a woman is meeting a friend or family in there.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
The older woman is being released from a correctional facility because the gate is open ready for her to leave. They are several bunk beds because they most likely had prior good behavior. One of the two ladies hugging each other is probably being release and she is saying good bye to a good friend of hers. The prison may be in Alabama as it appears that the white suit the lady is wearing says "Alabama Department of Corrections.” Although she is happy to be released, she is very thankful to this person especially and will miss them. The lady on the left holding the cell phone probably is a friend or family member that came to escort her out of prison. The women smiling behind her could be a daughter or granddaughter that is happy to see her family member being released. There is another woman in regular clothing that could be there during visiting hours.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
I believe that this photo is of a woman leaving a correctional facility after serving her time. The woman is hugging the officer for the last time as she goes with her friend. Her friend is smiling because she is happy to see the woman leaving. The people seen in the photo look to him all women, specifically older women. The picture is recent because it is in color, and the clothing looks modern. They are in a correctional facility because the back of the woman's shirt has the first three letters of correctional on it.
Ava C (LCMS)
This photo shows a woman’s correctional facility. I know this because the women are behind bars. There are also many bunk beds in the room and the women are all wearing white uniforms. This facility has low levels of security. I know this because the door is wide open and there doesn’t appear to be any police or guards. There is only one lady that is keeping watch. However, she has a smile on her face. The people in this picture are in the facility for low-level crimes. I know this because there are two women hugging in the front of the room. This indicates that they are happy to see each other. In conclusion, the photo shows a low-security correctional facility for women who committed low-level crimes.
Sophia C. (SKHS)
@Ava C I agree, good observations I had not noticed the bunk beds.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Ava C - thank you for your contribution to this morning's discussion! I hear you agreeing with @Vanessa V. and thinking that this might be a low-security place (you think it might be a correctional facility). You are adding to @Vanessa V.’s comment and saying that you don’t see the type of security personnel you might expect to see if this were a higher-security location. You are also thinking of the moment in the foreground, where two people are hugging one another. You’re imagining they might be happy to see each other, building off what @Brynn said, that this might be a happy time. What more can we find?
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, there is a little reunion going on between a prisoner and another fellow inmate. I believe that one of them, the one whose face we can see, is getting out of jail/ prison after a very long time in the slammer. During this time, these two women, I am assuming, inside this all women correctional facility, bonded and became great friends. The women standing to the side is smiling because I believe she must be like the women's daughter or something. This seems like a very happy time, and I bet the women will stay friends after this is all over.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I believe this is a mental hospital and the older woman who is being hugged is being released from the hospital. I say this is a mental hospital because all the women are wearing white. And it also just looks nicer than a jail. The women is being released from the hospital because she is clearly hugging her guard, I say this women is a guard because she has a different uniform than everyone else's uniform. The woman has a relieved look on her face. There is another women in regular casual clothes. She is smiling and is probably picking up and taking home the women being released.
Vanessa V. (LCMS)
This is a women's correctional facility. I know this because there is a cell door a room of grown women, and people visiting them. This is a low security facility. I know this because the door is open, there are windows, and there aren’t any guards. This is in Alabama. I know this because on the back of their outfits you can see the beginning and the end of Alabama.
Calum C. (SKHS)
@Vanessa V. interesting, do you think the older woman could be getting set free after a long sentence?
Ricky R (LCMS)
This picture consists of around 10 people, two of whom are hugging. They are in what looks like a correctional facility. I know this because there are iron bars on the windows. There are also words on one of the women's back that say “Alabama Department of correction” The woman on the right that is hugging is leaving. I know this because the gate in front of the camera is open. In conclusion, there is one person from the Alabama Department of Corrections is being released.
Riley S (LCMS)
The picture takes place in a correcting facility in Alabama. I know this because the back of one of the lady’s uniform says something on the back that looks like it says correcting and Alabama. The women are hugging because one of the ladies is leaving. I know this because there is another lady holding a cell phone and could be picking up one of them to leave. The space they are in is for females. I know this because the walls of the room are pink and in the picture, there are no males. In conclusion, The picture takes place in a correcting facility in Alabama, in a space only for ladies, where one of them is leaving.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Riley S - thank you for your comment this morning. It sounds like you're agreeing with @Sam M in thinking that the hug happening in the foreground is because someone is leaving or going home. You both also have found evidence to support the idea that this might be set in Alabama - you're looking at small details like the words you see on the back of their uniforms. Let's continue to look! What more can we find?
Sam M (LCMS)
It seems most likely that the picture shown on the new york times learning network is a picture of a female criminal hugging her peer inmates because she is leaving the cell block and going home. Some evidence to prove this statement would be the fact that everyone is wearing jumpsuits or prison outfits, The women in the front and center is hugging someone and everyone else in the room is watching. The reason I know that the lady is leaving and is saying goodbye is because somebody is off to the side is taking pictures and smiling, the cell door is also open indicating that the lady is leaving. The prison is located most likely in Alabama based on the back of the lady’s shirt. Based on this evidence the lady in the front and center is leaving a housing facility or prison in Alabama and is saying her final goodbyes to her fellow inmates and peers.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Hello students from Academy of Saint Elizabeth! I appreciate that you are sharing evidence from the image to argue your points; providing multiple possible interpretations; and acknowledging and reflecting on your own bias. Keep up the good work!
Alexa AOSE (AOSE)
It looks like they're maybe in a correctional facility, and a family is visiting an inmate. We can tell it's a corrections facility based on the uniform they're wearing. It could have been a long time since the two women who are hugging have seen each other because the other woman off to the side is holding her phone. This could be signaling a reaction that might've been photographed. It looks like a visiting room because of the families that are in the room and the environment that is pictured. It has lots of light and looks airy, which is inviting to visitors.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
I think that people are leaving a mental hospital. Someone who used stay at the mental facility is probably leaving, and there is a "happy" feeling in the environment. There are smiling faces, and I assume that one women has her phone out to take pictures of this special moment. I also assume that this is taken at a mental institution because of the simple, white uniforms to avoid distractions between the patients. In the background, there are bunkbeds that further maintain the simplistic environment. Lastly, two people are hugging, one of which is an employee, and one is probably the patient ready to leave.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Emma K. AOSE - thanks for your contribution today! It sounds like you are agreeing with @KatieD AOSE and @EmilyAOSE that someone might be preparing to leave this environment (though you have slightly different ideas on where this is taking place). @Emma K. AOSE, @KatieD AOSE, and @EmilyAOSE: What do you see that makes you say someone might be leaving or being released?
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
The people in this picture are most likely prisoners. However, I think they are prisoners who did not commit major crimes or had good behavior. I make this conclusion because they are in a cell together and seem to have nicer beds. They are probably getting released from prison or are being visited. The people in normal clothes are probably their family.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
The people in this picture appear to be behind bars which leads me to believe that this is some kind of correctional facility. The people are all women and there are beds lining the walls of the room. The women are all in white and the words that I can read on the shirts are Alabama and Correction. I can assume that the shirts fully say Alabama Department of Correction. There are people in the background who are not wearing the uniforms. They are probably visitors on a visiting hour. The two people in the forefront of the image could be saying goodbye because the prisoner is leaving. The women standing next to them is smiling at them and looks happy about the person, who could be a family member, being released. The windows are opened, but barred, which leads me to believe that this is for people who are not high risk.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
In this picture we see a large prison cell which I assume is for prisoners who did really well in regular prison and are put in a special cell with other inmates. I think that maybe one of the imitates is going home, so that is why there is a women in normal clothes looking so happy. I also think this is a communal prison because the bars, and the prison uniforms that read Alabama department of correction.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
In this picture, it appears that two jail or mental health facility inmates are reconciling, or the woman facing us could be a family member of the other women. Seeing as that all of the participants are women and there are bars as a door, it can be assumed that the people are in a sort of correction facility. The back of their shirts ends with the "Department of Correction." Also, because of the pink walls (although this might be a stereotype), we can guess that all of the inmates might be women. They are all dressed in white, so it might not be a jail, but instead, a mental health facility.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
Morning, @Charlotte AOSE, and thank you for joining this morning’s conversation! I hear you really considering the setting of this image, and you’re presenting us with some different options. You are also specifically noting the color of the walls of the space and wondering if that might be a stereotypical signifier of gender. What more can we find?
Annelisse (AOSE)
I believe the picture takes place in a mental hospital or prison. The women in the picture is hugging someone who she A) has grown close with over her time there or B) has not seen in a long time. It is probably the first one, because I can assume she is leaving due to the women who looks like she is her family. I can also assume that it is more likely a mental hospital because the outfit is not orange. It is a recent picture due to the high quality and the phone in the woman.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
There are two women hugging in each other in this photo. This appears to be a happy setting since the woman to the left is smiling at them. They look like they are in some type of prison or rehabilitation center. It could also be a mental asylum. I think this because the women are wearing all white, so they are definitely admitted somewhere. The women in the back are also in white, which further proves that they are all admitted into a place and that the white clothes are their uniforms.
VTS Moderator (Los Angeles, CA)
@Sophia AOSE - thank you for your comment this morning. I hear you noticing the uniforms you see in the foreground and background, and you are providing several different possibilities as to where this might be taking place - you think it might be in a prison, a rehabilitation center, or possibly a mental health facility. (It might be ambiguous to you!) You’re also exploring the tone of the image, and you interpret this as a happy moment. Let’s keep looking - what more can we find?
Ms. Klahr's 3rd Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
In this picture, two friends are hugging each other in the hospital because of a car accident and they are thankful that they are alive. I know this because they are waiting for their turn in a waiting room.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Ms. Klahr's 3rd Period thanks for revisiting this image with each of your class periods. 2nd period thought this image might have been taken in a jail, and your 3rd period is wondering if it depicts a hospital. You have mentioned the waiting room as evidence that this might be a hospital. What do you see that makes you say 'waiting room'? Can you provide additional evidence to support your claim or other evidence to refute it?
Brynn (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Ms. Klahr's 3rd Period I think it is a very good thought that they may be in a hospital. But, why do you think that they would be locked inside?
Meadowlane Magic (Kitchener, Ontario)
We see two ladies or men hugging. I don`t think it is a jail or mental hospital because the place is open and people are walking around. I wonder whats going on
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Meadowlane Magic thank you for sharing your thoughts. Let's dig a bit deeper. What do you see that makes you say the setting could be a jail? A psychiatric hospital? Based on the evidence you amass for each hypothesis, can you make a case for one over the other?
Annelisse (AOSE)
@Meadowlane Magic I disagree on the male part. It really just does not look like they are men. Also, in some mental hospitals, the patients who aren't dangerous or anything are allowed to be in a room with an open gate.
Shelby B (SKHS)
@Meadowlane Magic I think these are females, But I agree on it not being jail or a mental hospital. I think that one of the ladies are about to leave and that's why they are hugging.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)

In a minimum security mental health facility for prisoners, family members are reunited.
Deakin (portorchard, WA)
@Barbara Gerber i disagree about the "mental health facility" because it clearly says "corr" on the back of the women s shirt .i believe that it is someone being let free from a jail/prison.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Many are thinking about the relationship of the figures hugging—are they family members, friends, fellow inmates, all of the above? This photograph has me thinking about circumstances in which and environments where we bond with other humans to form meaningful relationships.
Jackson (Virginia)
I think this is when an inmate in Alabama was freed and she is saying goodbye to her friends or maybe family. The woman with real clothes on seems to be a lawyer who got her out.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Jackson thanks for sharing. There have been a few ideas floated about who the woman on the left side of this composition might be. Some think she might be a relative of one of the hugging individuals, but for you she might be a lawyer who helped facilitate the release of an inmate.
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Jackson I agree! I also think the lady in normal clothes may be the family of the lady who is getting freed.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Jackson Hi Jackson! Just wondering were did you get the idea this women is from Alabama?
Donte (charlotte)
it mite be a rehab senter and there tryin to get help
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Donte Hi! you have an interesting look that this may be a mental facility. What makes you think that?
NyaB (Virginia)
I believe this is an image of a woman who is being released from a correctional facility and saying her goodbyes to the people there.
Jordan (Mclean Virginia)
Wow, The picture is very moving for me, I think that this picture is that of a inmate being released and her prisoner friend saying goodbye.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Jordan thank you for sharing your emotional reaction to this image. Would you be willing to say more about what you see that touches you about this photograph and the situation you think these people are in?
Katie A (academy of saint Elizabeth)
@Jordan I agree with you!
Ryan (McLean VA)
I think is is a woman being released from a minimum security prison because of the expression on their face and how she is hugging the other inmate saying goodbye. I can also infer that it is a minimum security prison because of the style of doors with the bars and the open area in the prison.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Ryan I also agree that it is a minimum security prison. The back of the inmates shirt says "Alabama Department of Correction." The bunk beds in one big room and the barred but open windows suggest also suggest that it is a minimal security prison. She is glad to be leaving but will miss her friends.
Juliana H. (JCMS)
I think that they were separated when they went to jail. They could be sisters or some sort of relatives but they could also be friends. This could possibly be a reunion because you can see the emotion in the picture when the two ladies are hugging.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Juliana H. I agree that they are in jail. I also agree that family members are visiting or greeting them as they are being released.
tyler (mclean high school)
I think that prison is really boring and that the people in the picture are really happy to see each other also because they haven't seen each other in a while.
Annelisse (AOSE)
@tyler I wasn't really focused on the people in the background, but they do look pretty unpleasant. I guess I would be too if I was cooped up in a place like that and had to be wearing those outfits.
Colleen AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@tyler Hi! It's interesting that you think that prison is boring. What makes you think that?
Beenish (Virginia)
I think that this in happening in a facility in a warmer area and the woman that is hugging another one is saying goodbye to her as she is getting out of the facility.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Beenish I'm curious, what do you see that makes you say this place is in a warmer climate?
jacob o (1111111)
In today's picture They are obviously in a jail. I think they are related and they're in the same jail so when they're walking by each other if they have each other. Think maybe their mom and son because the girl is older in the dude is younger oh that's wheel that's what looks like.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@jacob o can you share something you see that makes you say this photograph was taken in a jail?
Riley (Jacksonville NC)
I think people are visiting each other in jail because they are in a Jail and hugging, and crying.
Chloe (Nc)
I think that there is a women being released from a detention center
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Chloe, can you share something you see that makes you say that a woman is being released from a detention center?
Siddiq (Charlotte)
i think its a rehab center and she is meeting some one she knows.
jeff (no homo ville)
she survived caner because its all pink
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@jeff That's an interesting idea. Why do you think that there are so many women in such a small room with bars for doors and windows?
Zyir Davis (JCMS)
What i think is going on is that some is visiting someone. What makes me say this is that the girl is hugging someone. What more i can find is that one of the girls are laving.
Uliana AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Zyir Davis The woman in regular clothes in the background suggests that there are visiting hours. the woman in the front is most likely being released because of the way the door is open, as well as how she is hugging goodbye. The woman slightly behind her is probably a friend that is taking her home from the facility.
Emma Blas (JCMS)
I think that it could possibly be someone being reunited with their friend, relative, or her daughter, etc. I say that because they look happy when they are hugging each other. I believe that it is in prison because of the bars and that there are rows of metal bunk beds.
KatieD AOSE (Academy of St. Elizabeth)
@Emma Blas I agree that they are reuniting with their family probably after being in jail. I also noticed the bunk beds and I believe they are nice quality.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Emma Blas I see your point, and I believe that people are reuniting. However, I do not think that this picture is taken of a prison. The bunkbeds are all near each other, and they are not separated from each other like in prisons.I notice the bar doors, but that is probably just to "lock" the patients in for safety reasons.
Mrs. K's class (Teaneck, NJ)
We believe this is taking place in jail because her shirts says Department of Corrections. It may be some kind of reunion as they are hugging and the others are watching. The people that are in regular clothes may be coming to visit. We believe this facility is for women as there are pink walls and no men present.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Mrs. K's class thanks for sharing your ideas. Have you had a chance to zoom in on the image? If not, check it out and see if you notice anything more!
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Mrs. K's class I did not notice the women's shirt said department of corrections. This leads me to believe that they are in a prison. The pink walls and no men present are indicators that this is an all women's facility.
Sonali aose (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Mrs. K's class I said that this picture took place in a mental hospital. Know that I read your response I did not realize that the shirt said Department of Corrections. That was very good detail!
Emran (jacksonville nc)
I think people are getting out of a mental hospital that you are forced to stay in.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Some have noticed the details of the space--including the pink walls, cameras, bunk beds, bars. What more can we find?

Navya Patury (McLean, VA)
I believe that they are in jail and they are reuniting after a long period of time. And maybe the woman in the black is happy for them to be together and was taking a picture of them.
Ms. Klahr's 2nd Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
There are two womens in Yale very big friends and one is going out of Yale because already was in Yale the time she need to be so her friend is giving her friend a hug to say good bye.
Nlash1 (Ottawa)
I think there relatives or somewhat. It's definitely a hello, and not a goodbye. Its a prison in Alabama maybe. The woman in black with the phone was MAYBE arrested?
Joyce (Missouri)
I see two people hugging, there in all white clothes and the people behind them are also wearing white so I’d assume that they are in jail, I see cameras and a jail door/cell. The two people could be hugging because they might get to be let go and there happy or one person is being let go and there hugging because they will miss each other.
Sophia AOSE (AOSE)
@Joyce Good point, Joyce. The cameras and jail cell door definitely make it look like the women are in a prison of some type. It could be a special rehabilitation part of the prison, since the women aren't wearing the traditional orange jumpsuits that prisoners normally wear.

For nearly two decades, Geneva Cooley assumed she would die in prison for nonviolent drug crimes. Then a judge reduced her sentence and changed her fate. she is from my home state of Alabama.
Hugh Mungus (Alabama)
@Hugh Mungus I used to see Geneva when I visited my mama in the prison, she was vary kind.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Hugh Mungus thank you for sharing your knowledge of and personal experience with Geneva Cooley, who was recently released from an Alabama prison and returned home to New York state. Given the nature of the crime, many considered her original sentence unjust.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Some folks have made a claim that this photograph is of an all-female environment; others believe all genders are represented. What more can we find?
Mrs Wagner's Class (UK)
@VTS Moderator We think this is a prison in Alabama, and in prisons, genders are separated. In terms of the photo overall, we think it shows a woman being released from prison and saying goodbye to her fellow inmates. This might be a case where the woman was wrongfully imprisoned. We think this because the woman to the side with the phone looks very happy. We think this photo was taken within the last ten years, because of the phone and the clothing worn by the two non-inmates.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Mrs Wagner's Class thank you for contributing from the UK today! Your class has brought up an important consideration as we examine this image—that of unfair or unjust incarceration. Thanks too for trying to place this image in time. Given evidence like the civilians’ clothes and technology, you think this is a contemporary photograph. What more can we find?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
A big debate so far today is if the two people hugging are doing so to say goodbye or to greet each other. What evidence could we find to support these hypotheses?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Hunter and some others have shared ideas about time that are interesting to consider. This image makes us think a bit more about how long the people pictured have been in this facility, and perhaps, how much longer they will be. It also makes us wonder about how long they have been away from their loved ones and what a reunion after being separated might look and feel like.

Many of us are noticing smiles on faces and the figures embracing at the center of this image. We are thinking that perhaps the people in this image are coming together to prepare for or celebrate life outside of this facility. What more can we find?
xavier starjak (jcms)
i see a prisoner who is hugging her best friend because she is leaving and there is also a girl on the left side walking her out there are bunk beds on the wall there is also cameras on the ceiling
Kendrick Pollock (JCMS)
a special placce for special women
mYk (nah you good)
she met her friend again after a really long time
Yazmine Simmons (Jacksonville commons middle)
I think that the woman is being released from a prison and is finally being reunited with either a close friend or family member. It looks at though the black woman in the back is the one who brought them together. I inferred that she was in a prison because of what she is wearing and the cell she is standing in front of. I think the woman has been in prison for a long time because of how hard the two are hugging each other.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Yazmine Simmons That is a good point I did not think about how hard they were hugging each other. The women standing next to them could be happy because the women is getting out after such a long time.
Photo class Villa Maria College (Buffalo, NY)
We think the woman is being released from Alabama Department of Corrections-based on the writing on the back of the other woman's shirt. The woman on the left is maybe a family member taking photos. The room is pink-there are all women in this photo. There are bunkbeds. The woman in blue/black in the background maybe works there? The one wearing the belt signifies its not a prison because you aren't allowed belts in prison.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Photo class Villa Maria College thank you for sharing your observations, interpretations, and wonderings. You have brought our attention to a figure in the background who is wearing a blue shirt and black pants, and are wondering who that person might be/what role they might play in this scenario. You are also surfacing a distinction clothing makes in this setting—what some are expected/required to wear and what others have the choice to wear, along what might not be permitted. In this way, clothing in this environment becomes a signifier of freedom and restriction.
EmilyAOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Photo class Villa Maria College I agree with your observations. That is a very good point about the belt. Do you think that the person wearing the belt could be a guard of some sort?
Isaiah F. (SKHS)
@Photo class Villa Maria College I agree, the writing on the back of her shirt does look like it says Alabama department of corrections.
Nathan (Missouri)
I think that it is a mother son reunion while they are in prison, and one of them are about to get out, probably the son, the reason I think it’s a prison is there are cameras, they are wearing prison uniforms and there are prison bars.
Hunter (Troy)
I think that these are two people who have not seen each other in a very long time. They have not seen each other in a very long time because one of them has been in jail. I say this because I see some people wearing white outfits and a jail door, with cameras. I also see a lady that doesn’t have a white outfit and she is with the visitor.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Hi Glen Ellyn, IL, contributors! Several of you are wondering if this image was taken in a mental health facility. What do you see that makes you say that?
Gavyn N (JCMS)
Two relatives are inmates at a prison and are seeing each other in the first time for a couple years.
Charlotte AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Gavyn N I agree that they might be inmates because they are both wearing the same clothing. Why do you think they haven't seen each other in a couple of years? Do you think that maybe one of them is getting released and they will miss each other?
Evan S (Troy Middle School)
I think it might be a rehabilitation home for insane people. None of them look like prisoners but it looks like a prison, so i suspect that the bars are there so they don’t break out. In the picture I think 2 patients are reuniting or glad to finally be leaving the place. There is also a lady smiling so they must be leaving the place.
Emma K. AOSE (Academy of Saint Elizabeth)
@Evan S I completely agree with you. I like that you included that "None of them look like prisoners but it looks like a prison." I agree with you that this picture is taken of a rehabilitation home for people with mental issues. The happy facial expressions also signify that people could be leaving the "prison."
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Several contributors are wondering if we are witnessing an exchange in a minimum-security jail or correctional facility. Evidence to support that identification of place are bars that separate the photographer from her subjects, uniforms worn by most of the people in the image, and the relatively open, shared space in the background. What more can we find?
Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think this could be a jail cell. We think this because there are bars on the door and bars on the window. We notice cameras on the ceiling as well. We also think that some of the people are wearing a uniform with writing on the back. We noticed there are bunch of bunk beds so many people stay in this room. We think these are visitors because they are hugging and either saying hello or goodbye.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Mrs. Livingston 2nd Grade thanks for contributing. I appreciate that your class and a few other contributors are noticing small details--like the black domed cameras on the ceiling--and are thinking about how this space might be used by its occupants. What more can you find?
Ms. Klahr's 1st Period (Bay Harbor, FL)
I think that their are a bunch a people in a mental hospital. I think that because there are cells they cant escape because they are mental or crazy. I also think that maybe they are hugging because the daughter is seeing her for the first time in awhile because her mother is mental and the people who work their don't let mental people on the street or in public because they are crazy
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Ms. Klahr's 1st Period is wondering if this is a mental health facility treating those who, given their illnesses, might be a danger to themselves or others. What do you see that makes you think the two people hugging are reuniting after a long separation?
Patricio (Glen Ellyn)
I think the thing is happening in this picture is girl leaving a girls hospital because as we can see there is two women saying good bye to each other and that might be because one of them got. I also think this is a girls hospital because is just girls in there. I don’t think this is a mental hospital or a prison because one of the girls have shoe laces and normally in prison or in a mental hospital they take that away from you and also we can see that the windows are open and in a prison they should not be open.
Evan (JCMS)
I think that it is two people reuniting in some sort of mental facility. What makes me say this is the two people in white clothing hugging each other and the patients to me have too much freedom to be in prison. The other thing I can find is the lady with her cell phone smiling possibly getting one of the people and bringing them home.
Evelyn (IL)
I also think that this might be an institution for people who need help. I know that because there isn’t that many security, there is so much freedom. The people that are hugging might been there for a long time that, the two girls hugging are saying goodbye. In conclusion they might be in a institution but they are saying goodbye to one person.
Ean (Glen Ellyn)
I think there in some type of facility and one of them is leaving with the girl in the black. They are all waring the same thing. And they all are waring Nike shoes. There is also some one in blue in the back.
Cedric S. (Glen Ellyn)
This image looks like a institution of something. Because of the people smiling and people are hugging. Also they are all in uniforms. This could not be a prison because the windows are too big and the cell is not really guarded as a prison would.
Edgar (Glen Ellyn il)
It looks like a low jail system due to there is jail bars in the door and they are wear the same clothing. And have colorful room and sleep in the same room.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
Good morning from Washington, D.C. I look forward to hearing what you have to say about this image! Contribute to the converstion by sharing what you think is going on in this image and what you see that makes you say that!
Leandre (Glen Ellyn Illinois)
In the photo it looks like a mental hospital or some sort because people are hugging and maybe he just got out. What makes me say that is because there hugging like and there’s like bars and other people In the same outfit.
Callie P (Glen Ellyn, IL)
I think that this a low-security mental hospital. I believe this because there is many people, beds and bars around windows. There is a person hugging a person while smiling. This means she is leaving this hospital. There is another lady smiling besides then which means she is happy that she is being released.
Josh Oates (Glen Ellyn)
There are two people hugging goodbye. I think that the person with the back to us works there and he or she is saying bye to patient that he or she helped.
Santos (Chicago)
In this weeks picture I think that were the picture was taken was at a asylum because the people are all wearing the same. The one that is hugging the other is becoming free into the world so he is saying his/her goodbyes. And the reason I think that it is not a prison is because it would be more secure.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Santos is thinking through what the physical differences of a jail and a mental health facility might be. What more can you find?
Allie M. (LCMS)
This is an all female correctional facility. I know this because the person in the front who is presumed to be a worker has words on the back of their jumpsuit thing. The words read, “Alabama department of corrections.” Also there is only women is the picture wearing the white jumpsuits. The correctional facility is in Alabama. I know this because the jumpsuits say Alabama right on them. This takes place in the present time. I know this because the woman in the black sweater has a newish mobile phone. In addition, there are cameras on the ceiling which are the same ones my school uses. Based on this evidence, the picture takes place in the present in an Alabama all female correctional facility.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Allie M. thank you for pointing out the text on the back of the uniforms. This context clue reveals quite a bit about the setting and as well as helps us identify who the people in the image might be—e.g. inmate, visitor, etc. What more can you find?
Litzy (Glen Ellyn)
I think these are people from the jail because they have bunk beds and that probably is a room the woman share and it seems like they get along well.
Faultys_Salty (Your mom)
What’s going in this picture is that it’s some sort of institution for people that need help and what makes feel that way is that they all got matching uniforms and are all sleeping in the same room and locked up in that a room with bunk beds but there not heavily gaurded
Anahi (Glen Ellyn)
I think it’s a prison for just women because I see no guys. I think this is a prison because I see bars and they are all wearing a white uniform. I’m also guessing one of them is getting out because two women’s are hugging and there’s another women without a white uniform standing next to them hugging and she has a call phone.
Lily Tran (Jacksonville, NC)
I think the picture is at a mental hospital because all the patients are wearing a white set of clothing & there are jail bars. I don't think it's a jail because the patients have too much freedom & everyone looks happy & friendly. I see a woman saying goodbye to another patient. Maybe she was better so she could leave. There are bunk beds in the room, fans, & windows so maybe it's a sleeping area. A counselling session was going on too since there was a group of people sitting in chairs.
Jenna M (LCMS)
In this photo, this building is an all girls facility, I know this because every person in the photo is a woman. Also the walls are painted pink and pink usually means woman or female. Also I think this is a women's correctional facility. I believe this for various reasons. I know this because all the women are wearing white uniforms. In addition, they are all middle aged women. There are two women hugging and a woman in blue taking a picture. This leads me to believe that this picture was taken during visiting hours. Therefore this photo was taken in a women's correctional facility during visiting hours.
Ashley M (LCMS)
In the picture, a woman is entering a barred room. Which could be a low-security prison. There are people in the room with other people which would only be allowed in a low-security prison. The shirts also say correctional on them which is another name for a prison. The one lady is hugging the other lady near an open door. Having a door open is uncommon for a prison. Which could be a sign of someone leaving. They also seem to be embracing and that could be a sign of one of them leaving. The prison is located in Alabama. The shirts that most of the women are wearing say Alabama on them. they say Alabama correctional faculty on the shirts. Based on the evidence one woman is leaving a correctional facility in Alabama.
Keyri P (LCMS)
The setting of the picture is some type of jail. I know this because most women in the background are wearing white suits and are matching which can symbolize the dress ware of the jail. The picture was taken on the day were the prisoner’s family can visit them. I know this because three people are not wearing white which can mean that they are the family members visiting the prisoners. The two women that are hugging are sad because one is leaving the cell, with the woman on the left. The women on the left came to pick up one of the women who are hugging, the reason they are hugging is because they are going to miss each other since one of them is leaving the jail. In conclusion, this picture was taken in a jail, when the visitors, are allowed to go inside and the day one of the prisoners leave and go home.
KaileeC (LCMS)
The setting in this picture is in a jail room for women. I know this because there are no men in the room. I know this is a jail cell because doors in prisons are usually bars as shown in the picture. I think this is a calming, therapy type of room. I know this because the walls are elephant pink, which is a color scientifically proved to help calm people down. Also, there are people hugging each other, seemingly consoling each other. In conclusion, I think this is a prison cell that is made to keep imprisoned women calmed.
Ella M. (LCMS)
This image takes place in a correctional facility. I know this because there are a lot of beds in a row and stacked in bunk beds. This correctional facility is for only women. This is true because in this photo the only people in it are women. This place is for women who need help with social problems. I know this because the women in the front are hugging and it looks like she is offering support with a sincere face because the women in this facility need help. Therefore this takes place in an all-women correctional facility where the women need help wit there thoughts and expressions.
Olivia H. (LCMS)
The two ladies in the front who are hugging are saying goodbye to one another. I know this because there is a woman a little behind them watching them hug. She is waiting to take one of them back home. The two ladies are parting ways, so they are just saying goodbye. Also, this is set in some women’s prison cell in Alabama. I know this because, on the back on the one woman’s shirt, she has lettering. The letters look as if they make up the word Alabama. In addition, this picture is taken during the day. I know this because the windows are open and there is sunlight. Based on this evidence, this is an all women’s prison cell, made to help them become better.
Abby K (LCMS)
One of the people hugging in the picture are getting out of this place. I know this because the people have a big smile and someone has a phone maybe taking a picture. This is a mental hospital or some type of jail. I know this because there are cameras and all the people except one in the picture are wearing the same outfits. The lady holding the phone is meeting one ladies hugging who is getting out after a long time. I know this because she has a big smile on her face and is holding a camera. In conclusion, someone is getting out of jail and meeting someone after a long time.
Bryce d (LCMS)
The building that the people are in prison. I know this because there are workers in suits and the walls are bars. Pink is supposed to relieve stress or help you focus. The lady smiling next to the two ladies hugging is the one ladies’ daughter. I know this because she seems to be smiling and looks happy for the lady. The prison is in Alabama. I know this because on the back of the people shirts it says Alabama. In conclusion, there are two people greeting each other in a prison in Alabama.
Sami A. (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the present day. I know this because the picture is very clear and one woman is holding a phone. This takes place in a correction facility for women. I know this because there are multiple women sitting on bunk beds wearing white and they are all in a room together with bars. Also, on the back of their shirt, it appears to say, “Alabama Department of Corrections”, so I know that this is where they are. The two people in the front of the picture is a son coming to visit his mom. I know this because the woman looks very emotional to see him and everyone is happy to see what is going on.
Kayla V. (LCMS)
In this picture of the week, I can conclude that someone is leaving a mental hospital and saying goodbye to his friends and doctors. I know this because he is hugging someone and the people in the background are smiling. The person must be discharged from the hospital and is saying goodbye. Next, I know this is a mental hospital because there are beds and bars. Mental hospitals, especially older ones, typically have bars like that. Next, the person who is leaving is sad to say goodbye. I know this because he is hugging his friend and saying goodbye. He also looks upset that he is leaving. In conclusion, this picture shows a person getting ready to leave a mental hospital, saying goodbye to everyone.
Roy T (SKHS)
@Kayla V. Ok buddy I hear but if you a good glance at their shirts it says correctional on it not mental
Tanzeela R (LCMS)
The women are being released from some a low-security prison. I can tell because there are bars on the sides of the image. The women are meeting after many years. That is because they are bugging eachother and look happy. I think they are all leaving the prison because tehy are wearing the same uniform, That is why I think they are in a low security prison and are being released.
Maddie M (LCMS)
The people in the photo are in some type of prison, but a low-security prison. I know this because they all are wearing matching outfits, with words on the back. They are also bars in the front like jail bars. This is a low-security, and not as intense prison. I know this because the doors are wide-open. They also have nice bunk beds and the walls are painted pink. Someone is leaving. I know this because the two people in the front are hugging and the door is open which indicates someone may be leaving. In conclusion, they are in low security, low maintenance prison and someone is leaving.
Abigale D. (SKHS)
@Maddie M I like how you added details about what you thought the place
Milan R. (LCMS)
11/25/19 To begin, in this photo you can see two women hugging outside of a cell. They both are joyous and seem to be reuniting. From this photo, I can conclude that these two women may be reuniting outside of a jail, correctional facility, etc… Furthermore, in this image, you can see lined up bunk beds as well as a few women in a circle of chairs. From this, I can conclude that this is probably a correctional facility in which these women are part of this jail, correctional facility, etc…Lastly, you can see most of the women are wearing thicc white jumpsuits while a select few are wearing general clothing. From this, I can conclude that this may be a visiting day and some of the women are visiting friends or relatives who are in this facility.
Gabrielle C (LCMS)
In this picture, a girl is getting out of prison after being there for a long time. In addition, they are all wearing the same clothes. The girl giving the other girl a hug is her mom and the girl in the outfit is the one leaving prison. Additionally, the girl with the braids is wearing the outfit everyone else is wearing. Also, the door is a bunch of metal bars. Additionally, the people are all on one side of the metal. In conclusion, one person is getting out of prison and her mom is coming to give her a hug.
Taylor (JCMS)
In this picture i see people that are in a prison because there are iron bars with a keyhole and they are all wearing the same white suits. The two people that are hugging i think are family because the shorter/older lady looks really happy to see the person she is hugging and the lady right next to her that is dressed nice is one of her daughters from my observation. I think the people in the prison are maybe taking a class on recovering from prison life because there are so many in one room and they all look pretty peaceful.
Jalyn G (Jacksonville)
In this picture, I think that it is an all women jail, and one of the two people hugging is being released. So, they are saying bye to everyone. That is why the lady with the phone is smiling.
Marcos R. Jr (JCMS)
In this picture there is inmates hugging in prison. What makes me say that is there is a cell, and people wearing white uniform or clothing. I can also find a lady with a phone and not wearing white uniforms, behind the people hugging.
7th grade ELA (VN)
We think that the person in the photo is leaving a health or jail facility, so she is hugging a happy farewell to the people who work/live there.
Jaeliana S. (Jacksonville, NC)
I think the two people that are hugging are prisoners meeting up with each other after a while. You can tell this from the bars and the bunk beds in the background.
Arri (JCMS)
They are in a correction facility and this mother is visiting her son. It looks like they haven't seen each other in a while. There are other inmates in the visitation room. The mother brought what looks like her daughter to visit her son. They all seem happy to see each other.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Arri thinks the two figures hugging are related, possibly mother and son. What do you see that makes you say one of these figures is visiting from outside of this facility?
Elad R (Israel)
I see a female correctional facility (bars, similar outfits). A woman from the staff (she has a belt ) is hugging one of the inmates. while civilians (maybe health care employees) are visiting nearby. the cell is open and also the door on the right so I presume It isn't a high-risk facility. By the look of the woman on the left, I guess she is the inmate relative. A very touching photo
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@Elad R thank you for sharing what you noticed. What do you see that makes you connect with it on a emotional level?
Lotta (Stockholm)
I can see two people hugging eachother. They are living in a home for older people. I think they are happy beause the man on the left is a child visiting his father.
mathew (Jacksonville, commons middle school)
they are hugging and there are in a correction facility it looks like that on the back of his shirt. the lady is taking a picture
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC)
@mathew thank you for sharing. Can you tell us more about which woman might be taking a picture? What do you see that makes you say that?
Devin B (Jacksonville)
They are in a prison. They look like they are being reunited. they could be getting out of jail.
Emory E (JCMS)
Maybe they are long lost cousins and they ended up in the same prison
natalia (nc)
i think they were the people were saying good bye because they one was being let go to go home getting picked up
