Before Joining White House, Stephen Miller Pushed White Nationalist Theories

One more honest report from the free press and we move one step closer to comprehending how low we have sunk since 2016. In 2016, Trump openly courted the votes of white supremacists, when he said absolutely nothing after he was endorsed by white supremacist David Duke. We knew Miller was a friend of white supremacist Richard Spencer when they were students at Duke University in 2007. We are one step closer to Trump's day of reckoning. The Supreme Court will not save him. The con-man is not above the law.
Jack (Lynchburg)
As a Jew, I could not be more proud of Stephen Miller. He is a true patriot who loves our country and appreciates its history and it’s democratic values. Unfortunately, the majority of your readers seek to destroy our nation with open borders, race baiting, and congressional gridlock. The 2020 republican landslide will be just desserts.
Bob (Minn)
The fact that Trump doesn’t fire Miller after this should be the final straw for every citizen to know, without a doubt, that Trump is, in fact, a full blown racist and white nationalist and does not share the values of our nation. It’s just as bad as saying “there are good people on both sides” of neo-Nazi marchers in Charlottesville who were chanting “Jews will not replace us” and wearing swastikas. No, sorry, that side had no good people. And the Republicans STILL stand behind Trump when he has a top advisor who is racist.
Deirdre (New Jersey)
Miller should know that the President gets a special joy when Miller plays against type and spews his venom. He’s laughing at you - he loves how you willingly make a fool of yourself on his behalf.
Red Allover (New York, NY)
The real grievances of the American working-class get no hearing from the politicians paid for by our billionaire ruling class. From them, despite endless promises of "change," the common people will get only greater inequality and continued world war. This opens them to the racist appeals (broadcast over satellite talk radio) of Fascists like President Trump. . . . Miller seems typical of the morally grotesque pseudo-intellectuals who attach themselves to Fascist movements. The only way to clean such racists out of power is an American Socialist movement based on labor and youth.
Dean Browning Webb, Attorney at Law (Vancouver, WA)
The Vietnam War draft dodger and the emasculated Republican Party aggressively support and zealously advocate the racial premised, anti immigrant, xenophobic predicated policies developed, advanced, implemented, and executed upon behalf of Stephen Miller. Miller and his extreme die hard sycophants are especially content to actively promote policies exclusively targeting racial, ethnic, and religious minorities seeking asylum in America by and through the invocation of alleged facially neutral worded contentions based upon national security interests. The draft dodger, Homeland Security, and the State Department whole heartedly endorse Miller's inimically brazen and hostile expression denigrating and demonizing refugees - of colour - to satisfy and placate the ever shrinking base of less than educated Caucasians who believe their precious way of life is under assault, that they are being misplaced, that an invasion is underway. Miller apparently is deliberately avoiding any remote identification or mere consideration of the events of 9 November 1938 in Hitler's Germany - Kristallnacht. Miller's steadfast commitment to actively promote the draft dodger's racially and ethnically imbued anti immigrant policy signals an important fact: Miller does not care what America thinks, save the myopic base who subscribe to and jealously guard their white skin privilege. Miller believes he is superior to anyone of dark complexion where English is not their first language. Race matters!
Roseann (Philadelphia PA)
Let's see if Miller has the class to resign after these emails are authenticated, etc. My guess is he has none!
Boregard (NY)
What? No way! And here I was thinking what a great guy to invite to speak at my childs very, very mixed grammar school. He just comes off being so nice and likable, and not a guy who was likely punked (often) at a young age...that everyone nice and charitable and mannerly was attracted to. Someone the teachers relied on to help the new kids, and maybe those struggling with the language. Wow...his TV persona just doesnt give this side of him away. Shocking.
RMM (US)
I do not believe any claims that Southern Poverty Law Center makes, unless they’re clean their own act and bring charges against Morris Dees. Dismissing him from the S.P.L.C. is not enough.
Dusty (Virginia)
@RMM The SPLC has a respectable history. Your statement is not justified and I suspect there may be ulterior motives for your decision. Dee's was fired and the SPLC apologized. The people that were harassed and abused can take legal action against Dees. Dees needs to be held accountable but organizations like SPLC and JDL etc. need our support NOW more than ever.
Dorne Pentes (Charlotte NC)
Disgusting. As a relative of a holocaust survivor I understand deeply how racism quickly becomes violent and dangerous to entire nations. Stephen Miller's words, if true, will confirm my worst suspicions. I fear for our country every day he is in the White House.
Mford (ATL)
Miller deserves no sympathy from the media or the public, nor do those who empowered him (talking to you, Jeff Sessions). Miller will go down as a villain in American history.
stan continople (brooklyn)
How does Trump, an ignoramus on any subject not directly touching real estate, find these people? Stephen Miller, Ryan Zincke, Scott Pruitt, Betsy DeVos - these people were all unknown to him prior to Election Day 2016 and then suddenly they're in his administration. Who is whispering in his ear?
Dusty (Virginia)
@stan continople Stan, you may be to young and may not know, but Trump was raised by a racist businessman who settled many cases of discrimination when the Don was young. Don the Con was sent to a white bread military boarding school at a time when military 'academies' were where parents, or the court, would send young men who were emotionally or academically troubled. Trump became a sociopathic narcissist that most people in the NYC new he was a kook and a con man.
BMUS (TN)
@stan continople Who whispered in Trump’s ear? His father Fred Trump. His and his father’s life long lawyer Roy Cohn.
William Samuels (St. Helena Island, SC)
Although I couldn't disagree with him more, I feel very sad about Stephen Miller. He seems to have a lifelong pleasure in being targeted in a negative way. He likes to be punished. His pleasure is in seeing others angry and upset with him. I bet he can not tolerate intimacy, closeness. I wonder if he has friends. How a person like this advances to the highest level of government is a sad commentary on our country. But, then, look at his boss.
BCM (Kansas City, MO)
How does someone like Stephen Miller come to be the way he is? What happened during his childhood that made him this way? He’s devoted his entire career to a relentless anti-immigration crusade. To what end? Suppose we could magically reduce legal and illegal immigration to zero. Then what, a utopia ensues? I just don’t get it, and I don’t get him or his like-minded zealots.
Mark McIntyre (Los Angeles)
Stephen Miller is a piece of work. My daughter went to Santa Monica High School and knew Miller. He graduated in 2003, my daughter in 2004. Miller hasn't changed one bit, if anything he's become even more militant. There was an incident at SAMO when Miller was running for student council. He got up on stage and went into full rant mode. When his time was up he refused to stop and had to be physically removed kicking and screaming. This is Donald Trump's trusted 'senior advisor' with an office just down the hall in the West Wing. God help us!
Krysia Robinson (North Yarmouth, ME)
It is beyond my comprehension how Miller is allowed to work in the White House. I understand that Trump can't be impeached for the company he keeps, but surely this information ought to be known by every voter come November. It's high time this kind of hate be banned from the halls of government. Shameful.
Dennis (Plymouth, MI)
So Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary says "that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.” That's what Sean Hannity told her anyway. Utterly discredited, debunked, smear "practitioner" might more accurately describe Stephen Miller.
db2 (Phila)
Look at all our brethren rushing to Mr. Miller’s defense. A very insecure nation indeed.
TWShe Said (Je suis la France)
Miller is the Symptom--Not the Cause. If not him, someone else. Trump drives this Administration with tight fist control.
tom (midwest)
Vindication for Ms. Omar who called him out and was vilified in the conservative media. No apologies coming from conservatives.
Observer (Virginia)
"WH press secretary" (quotes intentional) Stephanie Grisham is picking up quite aptly where Sarah Huckabee Sanders (and Sean Spicer formerly of DWTS fame) left off: spouting-off nonsense at the behest of their fearless "leader" (quotes again intentional). They are a collective disgrace.
SN (Philadelphia)
To give an idea of how immune we’ve become to the depravity of the dt administration, at this moment there are only 302 comments. In any other time a story like this about a member of a president’s staff would spark loud and deserving outrage, in particular from republicans. Now? Crickets. But they got a tax cut for selling their souls.
Foster (Austin TX)
Please research Stephen Miller's childhood in more depth. His viciousness is so visceral there seems to be more to it than mere ideological wit and power tripping.
Observer (Mid Atlantic)
Thanks for shedding further light on this WH staffer who hides in the shadows and feeds Trump’s nativist tendencies. I saw his uncle disavow all that young Stephen stands for on night in MSNBC, recalling the family’s road taken to U.S. sanctuary. Alas, Stephen is among those who forget from whence they came. Kudos to his uncle for not letting him, or us, forget.
Charlierf (New York, NY)
Although I am the most extreme anti-Trump person in America, this article does not meet journalistic standards of fairness. Also, neither the Southern Poverty Law Center nor my Representative, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are credible sources.
Laurie Black (So GA)
While you might not trust the SPLC, which is fair enough, you can still read their report and the numerous quotes from Miller’s messages, the primary source. Personally, I find this NYT article doesn’t go nearly deep enough to describe how Miller repeatedly and chillingly sought to dehumanize and demonize vulnerable people, all for sport and publicity.
Country Girl (Rural PA)
Nothing about Trump and his minions surprises me any more. Appalled, disgusted, upset, anxiety-ridden, depressed, demoralized, angry - I am all of those. Just not surprised. And I vote. For the first time in my life I can't wait to vote, a year before the election. November 2020 can't come soon enough.
ann (Seattle)
"This fall, Mr. Trump declined to grant temporary protected status to Bahamian survivors of Hurricane Dorian, …" People move to the United States without authorization. Then, if a natural disaster (or other extraordinary and temporary condition) hits their home country, they may apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to gain a temporary reprieve from deportation. Our government does not want to deport illegal immigrants to their home countries while their countries are recovering from a temporary disaster. The problem is that many immigrants ignore the word “temporary” in Temporary Protected Status. TPS status can be awarded for 18 months, but many try to get their status renewed over and over again. Some Administrations have found it politically expedient to renew the TPS status of illegal immigrants long after their countries have had time to recover from their disasters. In recognition that TPS was meant to be temporary, the Trump Administration told several immigrant groups that it was long past the time when they could have returned to their countries, and said they should prepare to leave. In response, the immigrants (most of whom came here illegally) are demanding permanent resident status. They say that they have been here for too long to return to their own countries. It is no wonder that our government would be leery of offering TPS to any other group. P.S. As a part of the British Commonwealth, the Bahamians could seek help within it.
Peter (Phoenix)
Stephanie Grisham is losing her credibility. Stephen Miller should not be in the White House.
Antoine (Taos, NM)
@Peter Not be in the White House? That's true for all of them.
R. Anderson (South Carolina)
Stephen Miller is likely valued by Trump because Trump perceives Miller as having his finger on the pulse of certain elements of the electorate. It's a no-brainer for Miller to burnish his relationship with Trump by feeding Trump what he needs to hear. One dirty hand washes the other.
BTT (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.)
Do the Republican Senators know this? Do they support Miller's views?
CW (Left Coast)
What's truly sad is that Miller's ideology and behavior does not disqualify him for an influential position in today's Republican Party.
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
“Disqualify”? It’s what got him the job.
NJLatelifemom (NJRegion)
It’s good to have the receipts in the form of the emails, but surely, we all knew this about Stephen Miller. Another self loathing hate filled misfit that could only be welcomed by the likes of Breitbart, Sessions, and Donald. We shouldn’t count on Donald ever to do the right thing and send Stephen away. Donald has lived 74 years without choosing that option in any circumstance and he shares Stephen’s worldview. But, Stephen Miller is young. He’ll have to walk the streets of a diverse America for decades to come, knowing that his secret is out for all the world to know and that he is despised. He won’t have his important job in the secure confines of the WH. In fact, who will hire him? Where will he live? He’ll be a pariah and deservedly so. That day will come and soon.
Tom Mariner (Long Island, New York)
I'm not sure what a "white nationalist" is other than a term invented to stir up hatred to sway the 2020 elections. The phrase sounds like it accuses someone of actions based on the insignificant color of skin, which our Martin Luther King taught us instead to judge by the content of character. No offense, but are those accusing him, including some of our representatives, guilty of "racist" concentration on one view of the "adviser"? (I'd attack the guy on more substantial elements.)
Duped Again (Knoyerscheit, USA)
From Wikipedia: “The term was originally used by white supremacists as a euphemism for white supremacy, with specific views being developed later.” Nice try.
JJ (NYC)
The involvement of the SLPC is this story really taints it. The SLPC is the organization that claims that the second most common category of hate group in the US is "Black Nationalist." They claim that "Black Nationalist" hate groups are only 20% fewer in number than "White Nationalist" hate groups, despite the white population being almost 5 times larger than the black population. Of course, the SLPC has gotten in trouble before for categorizing groups as "extremist" when they really aren't (even losing a lawsuit over the issue, and being ordered to pay damages). Instead of promoting the most salacious content available in leaked emails (seems like something from the 2016 election), perhaps the NYT should evaluate the veracity of the data Miller emailed - or the evidence for and against Miller's point of view. Typically, when journalists fail to do that, it is because the data is accurate - they just dislike the implications, or how "extremists" are interpreting it. "Shooting the messenger" is what pushes "divisive" government data onto "extremist" websites, where only the "extremists" interpret the meaning. That is not healthy. Blaming Miller for linking to such data, because a website "is known to host hateful content," doesn't work - and calling it "white supremacist propaganda" doesn't work either. The NYT is ceding discussion of "inconvenient data" on immigration to "alt-right" websites, and the NYT is losing influence in the process. The NYT should do better.
Charlierf (New York, NY)
@JJ Yes JJ, that needs to be said.
romac (Verona. NJ)
A contemptible man and I wish that I could say the old refrain used by many of my people" Thank God he isn't Jewish" . Perhaps we should petition the IRS to replace the $1 contribution for political purposes with $1 for long term psychoanalysis for Trump and his minions; perhaps $2 for Miller in a special category.
Eli Beckman (San Francisco, CA)
As a Jewish American, I can't really describe my horror at seeing a fellow Jew seduced by the violent racism that is increasingly popular with far-right extremists. The ideology that Stephen Miller subscribes to is focused just as much on attacking Jewish Americans as it is on attacking African Americans and Latin Americans. His embrace of an ideology that targets him and his family shows a disturbing level of self-hated, as well as a desperate need for acceptance—and a willingness to turn to white nationalists for that acceptance, if he can't get it from normal people. Miller is a sick man. He has no place in government.
xjohn (NYC)
Odd...the term "white separatist" does not sound at all pejorative. Aren't we a tricky thing.
JFR (Yardley)
… "Miller pushed white nationalist agenda" papers, of course he did. From his photograph to his policies to his adolescence, he is the paradigmatic profile of a white nationalist. The day will come soon when he, too, will be thrown out of the White House (I'm sure the WH's soul is horrified at the irony). On that day Richard Spencer had better guard his back because Stephen Miller will be looking for Spencer's job.
Bill (Chicago)
And this surprises....who?
Bill (Chicago)
@Bill the 'who' is self evident as 'nobody.' But the bigger question is, "Are the people not appalled by this true participants in what makes America the shining beacon on a hill?"
Jonathan Katz (St. Louis)
SPLC is not a "civil rights advocacy group" as cited on the NYT web page. It is a political organization with a very specific agenda and known biases. It recently had to settle, for a substantial sum, a defamation suit by an organization it falsely called racist. It is a tainted source.
Al Jordan (Vienna, VA)
White supremacists do not seem to realize that JESUS WAS A PERSON OF COLOR!
BMUS (TN)
@Al Jordan Well, they whitewashed him while making him over in their own image.
JA (Mi)
well, where else was he going to get his revolting ideas from if not from the KKK, Aryan brotherhood and whatever else tattooed skinhead groups?
Mike (Portland)
There is a thread to follow here that doesn’t get exposed. Breitbart was founded by a American - Jewish ring wing Steven Breitbart, funded by the billionaire Zionist family Rebbeca and Robert Mercers. There is a strong history of racism , fascism inherent in Right wing i.e. Likud party of Israel . If America - the world leader can be molded and shifted to acceptance of antimmigrantion , white nationalism- then other counties like Israel can say hey look , you keep undesirables out of your country, so we can and will do the same . Even Mr Millers uncle has denounced him in NY Times in the past .
Chris (Earth)
Stephanie Grisham's description of the SPLC is absolutely offensive and inaccurate. These folks in Trump's administration are utterly shameless and are completely lacking any moral compass.
Chris (NY)
Stephanie Grisham has been arrested twice for DWI. That says a lot about her character. She fits right in with the rest of the criminals in Trumps orbit.
Frank (Ocracoke)
Smear, smear and smear. Ever so tiresome. Nothing from SPLC is to be believed. Strong borders, full employment for all Americans, justice reform, fair trade, rebuilt manufacturing base, strong economy and election integrity. These are all things that we will vote for.
KP (Arizona)
Does this mean that putting children in cages and separating them from their parents seeking asylum is what you’re voting for too?
Zabala Zoron (IL)
This land USA belongs to migrants, the white people who thinks that USA belongs to them are wrong, no doubt the white people came here first because their great great grand fathers were here to serve the time for their crimes in England and Europe.
MJM (Newfoundland Canada)
Indigenous peoples were here first. White people stole it or took it by false treaties that haven’t been honoured.
BD (SD)
Oh, ok. I mean if the Southern Poverty Law Center claims Miller is a white supremacist, then of course it's true. I mean the SPLC is a bedrock of the Republic. It's not as though they do " hit jobs " on political opponents. Ok, where's my checkbook?
Robert (Seattle)
@BD I'm sure they've made mistakes over the years, but the Southern Poverty Law Center has been a force for good. They have been a dependable defender of regular folks even as society has become more and more top-heavy. Compare that with Mnuchin and two other Trump friends. At least two of those three have condos in Trump Tower. Those three are big-time buyers of the houses that folks lost in 2008. The same buyers who then rent the same properties back at exorbitant rents to their working class or elderly original owners. And, no, I don't think they are doing this merely in order to get donations--as you imply.
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
Thanks for admitting you didn’t read the report or the article, or you’d have known it quotes his emails with Breitbart verbatim, in which Stephen Miller himself espouses disseminating white nationalist and even neo-Nazi propaganda.
BD (SD)
@Robert ... " big time buyers of the houses folks lost in 2008 ". What, that's bad!? Would we prefer no " big time buyers " and simply allow real estate market values to collapse to 1930's Depression levels? Good grief, in a falling market, buyers of any type, big time or small time, are welcome.
West Texas Mama (Texas)
As a Jew I find it particularly sad that Steven Miller, a Jew whose ancestors immigrated to this country to escape antisemitic pogroms in what is now Belarus, aligns himself and espouses the theories of those who believe in white supremacy since, all too often, their definition of "non-whites" includes Jews as well. Had the immigration policies he champions existed at the turn of the 20th century, Mr. Miller's ancestors would not have been able to emigrate, a fact he conveniently ignores.
Barbara (SC)
@West Texas Mama Thanks for saying this so well. I too am Jewish, suffered from anti-Semitism in my small Southern town growing up and still do from time to time though I am in my 70s. I don't know how any Jew could be so prejudiced, given what our people have suffered. Miller should be ashamed.
Lawyermom (Washington DCt)
@Barbara My in-laws are Holocaust survivors. Members of Miller’s own family have condemned his statements. He is a disgrace. I heartily dislike Rep. Omar, but I agree with her on this — Miller should resign.
Michael Richter (Ridgefield, CT)
@Barbara Miller probably dislikes himself intensely. Self-hate usually underlies this kind of situation.
Rick Morris (Montreal)
Stephen Miller exists because Trump exists. Trump has no ideology except for what he knows pleases his base. It is thus the vacuity of Trump's mind that allows advisors (!) such as Miller, Bannon et al to rush in and fill it. With a stronger President in place, a firebrand like Miller would never have seen the confines of the White House. It is instructive to see that the slightest flicker of empathy Trump once had for the DACA recipients, genuine I assume, has long since disappeared. I wonder who the architect was of that?
Robert (Seattle)
@Rick Morris Generally you're right. Trump has no ideology. But his racism goes way back. It could be said to be one of his only true ideologies. He campaigned on it. He's governing on it. And, yes, the Trump base will not permit him to sign any immigration bill that is even a little humane.
smvisa (Montreal, Canada)
Immediately is not soon enough for Stephen Miller to pay for the hatred, irreparable harm to children and grievous tarnish he has brought to the American ideal.
Marvant Duhon (Bloomington Indiana)
Of course he's a white nationalist! Otherwise Trump would not have not have chosen him to be his top adviser on immigration! But Miller may have to go, because he has not been discreet enough about it. Incidentally, I have read Camp of the Saints. It's well written, but very racist. Similarly, I remember my shock in high school when I did a term paper on anti-Semitism in Shakespeare. Merchant of Venice is better written than Camp of the Saints, but definitely anti-Semitic. I enjoy Shakespeare's plays for their being great literature, but do not imbibe the anti-Semitism. Miller promoted Camp of the Saints FOR THE WHITE NATIONALISM, which is a different matter entirely.
Space Needle (Seattle)
Miller’s maternal grandparents were refugees from anti-semitic violent pogroms in Russia. They found safe haven in the US. Miller’s own grandparents would be excluded under Miller’s policies. Miller is one of the policy and thought leaders in the proto-fascist tendrils of Trumpism, and Miller is just getting started. A second Trump term would give Miller free rein to enact his darkest fantasies. The US is careening full speed into autocratic, fascistic rule, and Miller is a joyous leader in this descent. His grandparents must be spinning in their graves.
smvisa (Montreal, Canada)
@Space Needle Not just his grandparents. Every Jew who knows anything about their own family's history, and the broader history of Jewish immigration to the US and Canada, is sickened by Stephen Miller's thoughts, feelings and deeds. It is contrary to Judaism, American values and just plain decency and humanity.
Gregory Kells (Cleveland Ohio)
There are two major problems with this article. First, being "favored by White Nationalists" says absolutely nothing about the validity or invalidity of a theory. Making that argument is the very definition of an ad hominem fallacy. Secondly, Southern Poverty Law Center is a discredited organization with a track record of making false and libelous claims. Most recently they lost a $3mil lawsuit and were forced to apologize publicly for calling a Muslim reformer an Islamophobe. They've done the same thing to countless people and organizations. They have even been taken to task by one of their cofounders. Treating SPLC as a legitimate and objective source is negligent. They clearly are not. This is an excellent example of them using fallacious reasoning to suggest a conclusion that cannot logically be drawn from the info available. I'm not saying Miller is or isnt a racist. Neither did they, they just strongly implied it, using an irrational argument.
Peter (Portsmouth, RI)
In what alternative universe is the Southern Poverty Law Center an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.” Is fighting hatred now a far-left smear? Spicer was bad, and Huckaby worse, but Grisham seems the worst yet in respect of maintaining any basis in reality. Maybe at least she can dance better than Spicer?
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
Keep in mind Stephanie Grisham has two DUI convictions (and those are just the times she was caught). A job peddling Trump’s bigoted demagoguery is a winning lottery ticket to someone as otherwise disgraced and unemployable Grisham.
Barton (Arizona)
What Miller has done to separate and detain thousands of migrant children and families is nothing less than crimes against humanity. A national shame that will in history, stand next to Japanese internment during World War II as the worst America has wrought against its own stated values.
JKberg (CO)
White House occupants Miller and Trump give white people a bad name.
Daniel F. Solomon (Miami)
His own uncle diagnosed his hypocracy. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/13/us/politics/stephen-miller-immigration-uncle.html Self hatred needs to be added to the DSM.
Reality Check (USA)
A common trope from the Modern NeoMarxist Liberal is that anyone who speaks out against the tyranny of open border policies is immediately labeled a racist and White Supremacist. Nevermind the facts that Mr. Miller grew up as a Jew in the heart of Woke Santa Monica where he was force-fed an allegiance to Modern NeoMarxism Democrats. Epic FAIL.
LGutman (Ferrara, IT)
Let’s pay attention to what Miller allegedly wrote and the alleged sources. The rhetorical mumbo jumbo about Marxists is totally irrelevant and an obvious attempt to derail the discussion. Did he write the emails? Do he rely on white nationalist media? If not, why won’t the WH just deny the authenticity of the emails instead of attacking the SPLC?
Iron Feather (Los Angeles)
NeoMarxist Liberal is an oxymoron. It makes no conceptual sense, it refers to no known political ideology, and indicates the extent to which the “enemies” you are fighting are nothing more than boogeyman stereotypes inside your head. Our education system has failed you.
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
@Iron Feather It's not the system's fault that some people are impervious to education and/or basic reasoning. It's their fault.
Ma (Atl)
Believing that the US should cut immigration numbers and stop illegal immigration is NOT white supremacy! The Southern Poverty Law Center has become a far left group that calls anyone racist or white supremacist if they do not agree with open borders, embrace the victim-hood of everyone that is not white, and condemns anyone that disagrees with AOC and the other freshmen Dems that believe they know how we should all live, think, and behave. SPLC has no right to call miller a white nationalist or imply that he might be because he shares some ideals of those that may or may not be hateful. Just as some Dems agree with some of the antics of the Black Panthers - equally despicable to the KKK.
Christina (Europe)
Could someone please explain to me why it is "racist" to want to limit immigration?
Bill (NY)
I don’t know if our president is racist or not, but I do know that when he was elected the glee and celebrations by Neo Nazis and white supremacy groups lasted for weeks. That tells me all I need to know about this presidency.
Jim (Cleveland OH)
White House staff must be aghast at allowing a white supremacist to slip through their screening.
George (Toronto)
who here is surprised?
RFM (San Diego)
Miller's lust for power and attention combined with his angry self-hatred is a profile of white nationalism writ large. Ever the victim... When he's held publicly accountable, I expect to see a self-pitying puddle of tears like the Charlottesville leader after he was arrested.
Walt Bruckner (Cleveland, Ohio)
Stephen Miller is what you get when you punch the lonely kid at recess. Stop Bullying Now!
Nick (NYC)
@Walt Bruckner Please. Miller is no victim, and frankly I don't care how he got to be the way he is. I just care about him not having access to power anymore.
Walt Bruckner (Cleveland, Ohio)
And what about the millions of new Stephen Millers that America produces each year. Are you going to ignore them, too? Of course he’s a victim! So is Trump. The first step in any effective defense against fascism is to not to create young fascists in the first place.
Louise Cavanaugh (Midwest)
Regardless of how we try to prevent new fascists from being created, we can’t allow the ones that already exist to be in positions of power in our country. Feel sorry for Miller if you want, but he shouldn’t be allowed to influence our policies and legislation.
Scott Jeffe (New York City)
Before the election? I’d say it’s right up to today. And this makes him so much more popular among trumps “fans” than the other garden variety racists...
Robert Del Deo (Los Angeles)
Why whitewash this belief system with the term "white nationalism"? Their belief is clearly that whites are superior. White supremacy seems to be the more accurate description.
Susan (San Antonio)
White Nationalism denotes people who are loyal to a global movement that seeks to establish a whites only nation... they are a specific group that is NOT loyal to America.
Jacquie (Iowa)
Steven Miller is the new face of the current Republic Party who are racist and have been for decades. The only difference today is they are now obvious about their hate.
barbara (nyc)
It is hard when you look and listen to Stephen Miller that he is invested in eugenics. He is an angry flawed person who is one among many in this administration that believe by degrading politics raises their status in the world of human beings. They are wannabes not leaders.
A (Vermont, baby)
So, all those folks who condemned Rep Ilhan Omar for saying that Miller is a white nationalist have apologized to her, right?
Dave (Seattle)
Stephen Miller is the Trump whisperer so it's not at all surprising that traded in white nationalist memes.
David J (NJ)
Miller is a confirmed bigot. Okay, so now it’s notarized, certified and authenticated. The racist didn’t need this column to show Americans of all stripes his position on African Americans, Latinos, and anyone else he chooses to hate. He’s trumps go to for fascist ideas.
Paul Shindler (NH)
I do give Trump/Miller credit for having the insight to see that they could do enough "bottom fishing" in the American public to elect and support their white nationalist, racist agenda. Awful people - supported by a wrestle-mania cult.
NYC (NYC Chick)
I’m an immigrant myself and find Miller despicable. But his point about Amazon removing confederate memorabilia but still selling soviet / communist stuff is a good one. “There’s all kinds of hammer and sickle merchandise, Che shirts, Stalin shirts … the list goes on and on.” An article soon appeared on Breitbart about the Amazon merchandise, and the two continued to discuss the matter: “Should the cross be removed from immigrant communities, in light of the history of Spanish conquest?” Mr. Miller wrote. Should it? And if not, why not?
Robert (Seattle)
The cat's out of the bag. This isn't just Miller and it isn't just anti-immigrant beliefs and it isn't just white nationalism (as harmful as those three already are). As NPR "Morning Edition" reported this morning, in those emails Miller, Bannon and Julia Hahn all made reference to one of the very worst white supremacist books ("Camp of the Saints"). In their comments, they approve of that book and say it should be used to guide government policy. Hahn and Miller are still at the White House. Bannon who is no longer at the White House is still quite influential. This is outright white supremacy. Our eyes have not deceived us. Trump campaigned on race and is governing on race. The guiding philosophy of this White House is white supremacy. And the response by Trump and his base to the impeachment inquiry likewise reflects race. This is how their thinking goes: White Trump people are the only real hard-working tax-paying patriotic Americans. It's their country. They and their president can do whatever they want, even break the law. Laws are for brown people.
Mark (New York)
No one is actually surprised by this, right?
Rod (Miami, FL)
Is Mr. Miller from the same planet that we live on. What about concern for human dignity.
conan (sf)
Miller needs to go. The sooner the better.
Armandol (Chicago)
I read many comments about Stephen Miller and many are overanalyzing the nature of the problem. I would keep it simple. Stephen Miller is just a weak person in search of power, even through cruelty, to cover-up his obvious insignificance.
Mike (la la land)
I can see this lonely balding middle-age napoleonic syndrome man huddling in his condo texting, surfing sites and watching Fox News in his time away from the office. Clearly he did not get to the prom in high school, found few wierd friends and spent his college angry and alone. His pretend friends in white supremacy world love him as being their key connection to legitimacy, so of course he is condescending and full of himself. But when he can't get dates and has to eat dinner by himself, maybe he doubts all of this...for a few seconds. That will be his experience in the last few seconds of his life on earth when it comes, and he is moments away from meeting his maker. Perhaps he will admit his mistakes before then, and his followers might see they were taken for a ride.
Mark Dobias (On The Border.)
Can’t wait until Dave Chapelle plays him.
Arch66 (Los Angeles)
This is not a revelation that this administration fosters racists ideas. This is a confirmation.
Donald (NJ)
The only accurately reported aspect of the article is the last paragraph. I see more bias in this article then in the amount of bias you are reporting about Miller.
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
@Donald If the article is inaccurate, as you assert, point out where Stephen Miller's emails were misquoted.
Everyman (Canada)
I would have thought that pushing white nationalist theories was a requirement to get a job in the Trump administration.
CW (Alexandria)
I feel that 95% of the news nowadays is just confirming what we already know or suspect.
Jack (AK)
Hate to say it, but I think this actually bolsters Miller's brand with Trump and The Base.
C. Whiting (OR)
Next up: "Miller Pushed White Nationalist Theories After Joining WhiteHouse."
SL (Pittsburgh)
From the ADL website: "White nationalism is a term that originated among white supremacists as a euphemism for white supremacy. Eventually, some white supremacists tried to distinguish it further by using it to refer to a form of white supremacy that emphasizes defining a country or region by white racial identity and which seeks to promote the interests of whites exclusively, typically at the expense of people of other backgrounds." We need to stop using the term. Call is white supremacy to expose the hateful, racist ideology for what it is. (I just learned this too and see that many others, even left wing politicians, are continuing to use the term "white nationalism."
Allison (Los Angeles)
Stephen Miller once told me as a senior at Duke that he was “really good at making people look stupid.” A little too on the nose, I think.
DB (NYC)
Ah yes...the Democrats way.. Leak, leak, leak
AW (Maryland)
Ah yes...the Trump supporter way... ignore the substance of the article and attack the process.
Elias (NYS)
@DB The leaker is a former colleague of Miller's at Breibart! Your point being?
DB (NYC)
@AW If the article HAD any substance, I would pay attention to it. And just like a Dem - more concerned with getting info than relevance...
Joe B (Texas)
Stephen Miller is another Trump lackey and fellow racist that should be locked up.
Levon S (Left coast)
Let’s say you’re right. But locked up-no trial? That’s playing by their handbook.
Silly (Rabbit)
Liberals claiming anti-immigrant policies are white nationalist are just as stupid as conservatives who claim medicare for all is communism. Oh well. Hence our great political tragedy.
Michael (Brooklyn)
Read up on Stephen Miller, even besides the information coming out today, and get back to me on your “both sides are equally bad — no big deal” point of view. Also, pay attention to what we’ve been doing to asylum seekers and climate refugees lately.
Lilly (New Hampshire)
If he let his hair grow long, he could be Wormtongue.
J.S. (Northern California)
As a Jew, he should inherently know what his policies can ultimately produce.
Bob in NM (Los Alamos, NM)
Mr. Miller serves at the pleasure of the President. And this President gets great pleasure from the applause he gets with his racist bleats. That applause is coming, not from Pennsylvania Ave., but from Main Street. Without that applause, and without the silence from half of those on Capital Hill, Mr. Trump would be a ridiculed cipher of history. What a sorry mess this country is in.
Tom (United States)
No surprises here. We have all observed Mr. Miller’s sneering countenance and objectionable rhetoric on numerous Sunday news interviews. That his worldview has shaped US policy, both foreign and domestic, is one of the great tragedies of this administration.
DCH (CA)
The fact Stephan Miller is a rabid white nationalist isn’t news. Nor is the fact he influenced what was produced at Breitbart. What would be newsworthy and illuminating is analysis of what Miller’s email tell us about his vision for America. What is his endgame? What is he driving us toward? Are there any bounds to what he is willing to do to achieve his goals? What does his correspondence tell us about the depth of the depravity and cruelty to which he is willing to go to achieve these goals. We need to start having these things reported, not just after the fact recitations of what we already know happened. If we are to save our democracy, we must think strategically, understanding where those who are trying to destroy democracy are trying to take us to. They aren’t shy about talking about it and planning for it among themselves. Just look at how open the Federalist Society is about their efforts with judges. Or at the staunch defense of the euphemistically named concept of the “unitary executive” unfolding before our eyes daily. So, NYT, dig deeper and focus more broadly in your reporting. There is no excuse for the American public to be learning these things only after the fact, when the damage is already done.

"Before Joining White House, Stephen Miller Pushed White Nationalist Theories" That is probably how he got the job.
johnlo (Los Angeles)
Nothing like a healthy serving of innuendo with my morning coffee.
Elias (NYS)
@johnlo ROTFL, nothing about Miller speaks to innuendo. It's all there front and center, he is a white supremacist.
Michael (Brooklyn)
He’s in league with people who believe he isn’t white and, therefore, vile and undeserving of the same rights. On one point, I do agree with Stephen Miller that Stephen Miller is vile.
basel1120 (Seattle, Washington)
It's not surprising to see Miller defended by the White House and the Southern Poverty Law Center to be characterized as a "far-left smear organization." When viewed from the right ditch off the side of the road an organization that occupies the broad center of the road and specializes in exposing racists and fascists might well appear to be "far-left."
ScottC (Philadelphia, PA)
The only way out of this debacle is at the voting booth on November 3, 2020. Vote Democratic like your life depends it, because it does.
Donald E. Voth (Albuquerque, NM)
Please remember that, bad as he is, Miller is the tip of a huge Republican Party ice-berg with it's "Southern Strategy," which was designed, among others, by the Republican's dirty tricks team of Atwater, Manifort, Stone, a strategy of lies and tricks which have, over the years, deprived millions and millions of Americans the right to vote. Evidently people who will believe that God considered black people to be inferior; that Mexico will pay for the wall; that human influence on global warming is a hoax will, I guess, believe anything.

Stephen Miller: puppet or puppet master?
HL (Arizona)
I'm not sure why this is news. Since joining the White House Stephen Miller has been constantly pushing a White Nationalist agenda. Did anyone think that's not the reason he's in the White House?
Al (Ohio)
This is why its a waist of time trying to convince supporters of the lawlessness of the this administration; fundamentally, there is a warped set of "American" values here, so they're basically at war with the country.
Paul King (USA)
Holocaust survivor's son here. Miller is Jew exhibiting a variation of "Stockholm Syndrome." Identifying with and adopting the views of his oppressors. Those being the far right, Nazis, fascists, racists, white power advocates. All of whom would erase him in a second if they ran the country. With my background, mentioned above, I have studied the small number of Jews who collaborated with the Nazis in the brutal ghettos hoping to save themselves - ingratiating themselves, debasing themselves out of desperation to survive. A choice born of unspeakable, inhuman circumstances. Mr. Miller tacs to the inhuman under no desperation. A "chosen one" has made his choice. Freely.
Mike Bonnell (Montreal, Canada)
And yet, African Americans will proudly stand behind trump at his rallies. Jewish donors continue to sing his praises - despite the increase of anti-semitism since his arrival in office. We are truly living in a bizarro world.
Tony (New York City)
@Mike Bonnell I wonder if they are being paid under the table. Maybe Don King is paying them but you know there is so type of scam if Trump is involved. Nothing is what it appears to be with him, and money is always involved.
Greg (California)
File this one under "utterly unsurprising."
Limbo Saliana (Idaho, USA)
That Miller is a racist should not draw additional attention to his reputation. That he has survived the Trump administration should.
Concerned (Europe)
Miller is pulling the strings, not Trump. The money behind the alt-rights in Trump administration secure Miller’s and his likes’ jobs. Trump is the puppet. Mercer, and others are paying to kidnap the democracy, so far doing well. All the judges nominated so far, what else has been done that will decrease democracy and will be difficult to undo - people should do more than just write comments...
AL (NYC)
The crazy thing is this will only make him more important and valuable in this bizarro inverse upside down world of Trump's presidency. It's insane. The lunatic fringe now in the highest seats of power. We need to be very afraid.

This says it all about this President and his staff and his party: “Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, responded that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.”
Vance (Indianapolis)
It's getting hard to keep track of all the criminals associated with this administration.
Jose (Seattle)
It was very obvious from the beginning..
Blackmamba (Il)
Too bad that Stephen Miller, Steven Mnuchin, Lawrence Kudlow. Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner couldn't have been at Charlottesville Virginia to mock the torch carrying and chanting ' Jews will not replace us' white nationalist supremacist right-wing Protestant mob. Who according to Donald Trump were among ' the fine people on both sides' ably representing the Trump White House's hostility towards anti- Semitism.
srwdm (Boston)
Miller’s own Jewishness has somewhat enabled him to hide his white nationalist ideology. But this trove of documents leaves no doubt. Agree with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, it’s time for Stephen Miller to resign.
AR (Kansas)
Ms. Grisham, the White House press secretary, said in an email that the Southern Poverty Law Center “has recently been forced — to its great humiliation — to issue a major retraction for other wholly-fabricated accusations.’’ Ms. Grisham conveniently forgets to mention the following penalties and settlements on her current boss (1) $25 million settlement for fake Trump University and its closing (2) Closing of Trump Foundation and a $3m fine
Dan (Lafayette)
As has been posed elsewhere, I wonder if Miller hears his White Nationalist colleagues snickering and saying “he’s next” when he leaves the room?
Tom Q (Minneapolis, MN)
Given Miller's views, he should have no problem with anyone who promotes antisemitic views. Clearly he appreciates bigotry. Or, does that stop when it impacts those of his heritage, i.e., my bigotry is fine but not yours. Yet another GOP hypocrite.
IgCarr (Houston)
No surprise that Miller is a white nationalist and/or neo-Nazi. I can only suspect that his self-hatred is as vast as his hate of brown-skinned people. Will the revelations disclosed in this article cause him to resign? No. He'll most likely get a promotion. In a sea of the malignancies and aberrations, he has excelled expectations. But he should watch his back as Stephanie Grisham appears to be giving him a run for his money as the most malignant.
Baruch (Bend OR)
Miller is not a whole person. He lacks decency, empathy, the capacity to care. His brutal outlook on the world speaks of a person with profoundly disordered attachment and relational abilities. That such a person is in the position he's in speaks volumes about those who hired him. The Trump agenda is, as has been said before, all about the cruelty, and Miller is the architect of that cruelty. This is a person who needs long term psychotherapy, and to work in a context where he is caring for others...an animal rescue or something like that. It is a disservice to Miller, and to the country, for him to be in the position he's in.
ondelette (San Jose)
@Baruch, repugnant as white nationalists and Stephen Miller are, "This is a person who needs long term psychotherapy, and to work in a context where he is caring for others...an animal rescue or something like that," is an equally repugnant call for "re-education", something that we despise when done in, say, China.
WillyD (New Jersey)
@Baruch Psychotherapy is not going to change Miller. Seemingly lacking empathy, IMO, he is either a sociopath (choice) or psychopath (condition). Therapy would be of no use to him or us (in relation to his affect on U.S. policy).
Nata Harli (Kansas City)
@Baruch I would never allow him to be near any animals, therapy or no therapy.
Patrick (NYC)
““Have you thought about going to Amazon and finding the commie flags and then doing a story on that?” Mr. Miller wrote to Ms. McHugh” If Mr. Miller wants to know about commie flags, he should just ask his boss, Donald Trump.
Art123 (Germany)
Thank you for giving this important story air. Stephen Miller is an open racist serving in the highest echelons of American government, shaping immigration policy from a white nationalist perspective. Demands for his immediate removal should be echoing through every hall in Washington, and across America. What have we come to?
Jacquie (Iowa)
@Art123 The Republican party is showing its true colors with Steven Miller.
Theopolis (Decatur ga)
@Art123 I’d say it looks like we’ve come to the end .
Tom (Austin)
I have always felt Miller was pushing a white power narrative, so this does little to change my view of him. At least now I have more evidence to use while talking with conservative family/friends. Hopefully it helps any conservative who backs Trump and claims to not be racist wake up to how this white house operates. While I believe turning this into a "series" plays into the "slanderous" organization narrative the White House is pushing, we need to remember that this is just the tip of the iceburg. More emails are coming out today, and more will come out in the coming weeks. This will only get worse for Trump, Miller, and the Senate campaign of Jeff Sessions.
evans (austria)
the picture at the beginning of this column show exactly what a happy, warm and loving person miller is!
DJ (Yonkers)
Stephen Miller is the classic hypocrite. He is the descendant of asylum seekers who escaped anti-Jewish persecution in Eastern Europe. His mother belongs to the Glosser family, whose ancestors came from the city of Antopol in Belarus. One branch of the family found themselves in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and eventually became proprietors of a department store, Glosser Bros. The members of the family listed the name “Glotzer” on their paperwork when they finally emigrated to America. The husband and wife who became the Glossers of Johnstown were just Wolf Leib and Bessie of the Eastern European town of Antopol, which was part of the Russian Empire. Wolf and Bessie came to Ellis Island on January 7, 1903 aboard the German ship the S.S. Moltke. According to the ship’s manifest, he had a grand total of $8.00 in his possession. Today, Miller’s, hypocritical opposition to immigrants isn’t limited to those in the country illegally. It extends to refugees, asylum seekers and legal immigrants who aren’t sufficiently middle class. If he had any ideological integrity he would advocate for self-deportation.
Bob Jones (Lafayette, CA)
I’m tutoring a high school student in AP US history. We’ve just gone through the Civil War and stepped into Reconstruction. I’m struck by how this book of mid-nineteenth century history reads like today’s news. Our nation is built upon a theory of humanity’s potential to be good. Are humans just not good enough for America?
Clint (Portland, OR)
@Bob Jones Just not good enough for Republicans...
al (NJ)
As Trump stated, "surround myself only with the best and most serious people" Seems his "best" Miller and Trump continue a White Nationalist policy.
manfred marcus (Bolivia)
Steven Miller, an atrocious 'racist' and xenophobe, has no business directing immigration issues from the White House (nor does Stephanie Grisham, Trump's parrot), a descendant from persecuted immigrants himself, so insecure and full of complexes, that he has to exercise cruelty at will, echoing Trump's cruelty 'gratis' (just because he can, while abusing the power of the presidency). How in the world did we get here, having a mafia ring of misfits do as they please...while trampling on this democracy of ours? What we have currently seems more a pluto-kleptocracy, unregulated and with no adult supervision. "What could possibly go wrong?"
DRK (Cambridge MA)
Mr. Miller, who was born into a Jewish family, might want to reflect on the writings of Martin Niemöller. Niemöller was a German Lutheran pastor who became the leader of a group of German clergymen opposed to Hitler. The Nazis arrested Niemöller in 1937 and sent him to Dachau. First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
TaminoPR (NYC)
It is unconscionable, deeply twisted and fundamentally dangerous that Miller--a descendant of Russian Jewish immigrants whose family would have been wiped out in the Holocaust had they not had the good fortune to have been accepted in the US—is the architect of our vile anti-immigration policies in the Trump administration. Whatever one may think of Reps. Ocasio-Cortez and Omar, I believe they are both courageous and correct in calling for Miller's ouster. I believe all responsible Americans should do the same.
Baldwin (Philadelphia)
If by now anyone was unclear that Miller is a proud racist, I’d be shocked. It’s the one quality that has kept him in stable employment in a chaotic and volatile White House.
GC (Manhattan)
I learned from a comment here that he recently became engaged to be married. My grandmother used to say there’s a lid for every pot. But still. Turns out it’s to Pence’s press secretary. Grandma was right.

These revelations would be a very big deal in past Presidential administrations. But not with this one. Trump keeps his base intact by trafficking in racial provocation, his base loves it. And Miller is a rock star with the Trump base.

Why is Confederate merchandise referred to as 'Confederate merchandise' while communist merchandise is referred to as 'Communist-ERA merchandise,' as if it were mere historical artifacts? Communism is still active today, from the ruling Chinese communist party to thousands of activists in the West. If there is a communist era, we're still in it.
Kris (Las Vegas)
Why is this news now? Anyone with access to Google knows this as well as that he's not alone in the trump administration... at the beginning, there were around 9, give or take, individuals with all of the same beliefs and ties to the same groups listed in this article. Some have moved on, I'm looking at you Bannon, but more remain and are gleefully infecting US domestic and foreign policy with their neonationalist views. The entire gop strategy has been built around these beliefs for decades and helped along with huge amounts of money from estates like the Mellon banking fortunes. And people wonder why the gop is gaining a racist rep...
cheryl (yorktown)
The fact that the SPLC did mess up has caused the organization harm, including loss of donors. It is unfortunate because whenever that sort of thing happens it does make outsiders ( insiders, too) question how deeply it investigated issues, and how it came to its conclusions, despite all the solid work it has done over time That said, the SPLC is not the sole entity to question Miller's positions. He is a prime link to the extremist elements of Trump's "base" and an a xenophobe. I think AOC is correct on this: he IS a white nationalist, with more influence on current national policies than elected officials, because he echoes Trump's fear mongering.
Juliet Lima Victor (Raleigh, NC)
Have you ever looked at a person, not speak to him/her, and thought "they're not right". Miller looks evil. Promotes evil. And, according to his uncle, is the grandson of immigrants. Nothing like a guy who climbs the ladder to prosperity then pulls the ladder up behind him so no one else can come up.
Sheldon Clark (Vail, AZ)
Stefanie Grisham and Stephen Miller are cast from the same mold - soulless sycophants that seek only to please their master. History will not be kind to them.
Jeffrey Schwarzschild (California)
Interesting that the White House response is to attack the Southern Poverty Law Center but not to deny the allegations (i.e., facts) of the report.

Something is missing or very , very wrong in this guy.
SB (Louisiana)
Racist is going to be racist. Stephen Miller never really said he was otherwise. But let us not forget the administration and the president that hired and enables Miller to enact his racist ideas into brutal inhumane policies that is a blight on everything the statue of liberty stands for.
Barry Schreibman (Cazenovia, New York)
It's hard to be shocked any more after three years of Trump (as many have noted, this numbing is probably the point of Trump's daily onslaught of outrages). But the following quote from this article really shocked me: "Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, responded that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an 'utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.' " Good Lord. What universe does Grisham live in? The SPLC has for decades been a bulwark against extremism, a source generations of Americans (especially Jews) have relied on to keep informed about the dangers out there from racists and neo-Nazis. I was a child when the McCarthy-Army hearings were televised, during which Roy Cohen, McCarthy's lawyer, was shown constantly whispering in McCarthy's ear. So I'm old enough to remember Roy Cohen. It seems to me more and more, as the Trump era continues to bring our country down into the gutter, that comments like Grisham's demonstrate how Trump and his minions channel Roy Cohen. The quoted comment is pure Roy Cohen. Just substitute "communist" for "far-left" and there we are -- we can hear the demon himself speaking. Trump teaches us what a Joe McCarthy presidency would have been like -- and felt like.
Chris Kox (San Francisco)
@Barry Schreibman That's Cohn. Grisham is indeed fanatical here, but the SPLC is not always and absolutely credible either.
Some Dude (CA Sierra Country)
This should serve as the final word on Trump's racism. Miler serves at the pleasure of Trump. Trump could fire Miller for any or no reason. And yet, Miller remains. Nothing Miller has done disturbs Trump. Now that darn SPLC, what a bunch of radicals. Give be a break.
Ken (St. Louis)
Don't tell me! A Republican is connected to white supremacy?!?
CV Danes (Upstate NY)
At least we now know on what Miller bases his ideas for crimes against humanity.
cheerful dramatist (NYC)
What a sick puppy. He even betrays Jewish people and he is one. Think about that. The KKK hated and murdered Jews. The White Supremacists hate Jews. " The Jews will not replace us". Stephen tortures children by ripping them from their parents and some will never see their parents again. Some kids have already died because of his policies. If he had his way and the white supremacists ran the country, he himself would be killed. Talk about self hatred. That is like Trump's base supporting Trump. What is to be done with humans who despise themselves so much they try to destroy others in their self immolation.
Keef In cucamonga (Claremont CA)
Remember when Ilhan Omar said that Miller was a white nationalist and members of the media pounced on her, some even suggesting it was “anti-Semitic” of her to say so? I do. Those members of the media owe her an apology. This is hard proof. Hard to digest, too, that a man with these views has such a powerful role influencing our politics and society. He hasn’t been elected. And even harder to grapple with the fact that in 2019 the US government — our government, as steered by this vile eugenicist — separated and detained over 69,000 children in 2019. I guarantee that Stephen Miller like this, very much. Do you? If you’re one of those “centrists” who claims that if the Democrats nominate Warren you’re voting for Trump, just make sure you spend some time peeking behind the wizard’s curtain. You’ll find out what you really support, behind the gaslighting and lies. Remove Miller from the White House. Now.
Justvisitingthisplanet (California)
Like Isis leaders, remove Miller and there’s more where he came from in Trump’s Republican Party cesspool that share his ideology to take his place. Let’s ask Trump’s “Christian” supporters what would Jesus do.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Miller is a weak minded man without any conscience who could only have the ear of another thoughtless man who is President. The policies that come out of Miller’s mind are a disgrace. We can deal with immigration without looking like fascist thugs and racists.

I wonder what he thinks about IF he thinks about any thing but Furriners and Brown & Yellow Perils in that ferret mind of his? But, again, do we even want to know what goes on in that charnel house of quasi-human thoughts?

a white nationalist/supremacist in the white house is such a giant feather in the cap of these haters and the president knows this and will never fire miller.
Socrates (Downtown Verona. NJ)
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is one of America's greatest civil rights leaders. In 2008, the SPLC's legal case against the Imperial Klans of America (IKA), the nation's second-largest Klan organization, went to trial in Kentucky. The SPLC had filed suit for damages in 2007 on behalf of Jordan Gruver and his mother against the IKA in Kentucky. In 2006, five Klan members went to the Meade County Fairgrounds in Brandenburg, Kentucky, "to hand out business cards and flyers advertising a 'white-only' IKA function". Two members of the Klan started calling Gruver, a 16-year-old boy of Panamanian descent, a "spic". Subsequently, the boy, 5 feet 3 inches and weighing 150 pounds was beaten and kicked by the Klansmen, one of whom was 6 feet 5 inches and 300 pounds. As a result, the victim received "two cracked ribs, a broken left forearm, multiple cuts and bruises and jaw injuries requiring extensive dental repair." In a related case in 2007, Jarred Hensley and Andrew Watkins were sentenced to three years in prison for beating Gruver. In 2008, an all-white jury awarded $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages to the plaintiff against the racist Ron Edwards, Imperial Wizard of the group, and Jarred Hensley, who participated in the physical attack. Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, who said that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization”, should be impeached.
Carl Ian Schwartz (Paterson, NJ)
@Socrates How about "spit-roasted"?
Carol-Ann (Pioneer Valley)
@Ma Actually, more than a few of us have read the upheaval at the SPLC, it wasn't because of "their bias", (but if that shibboleth fits your defense of Miller et al, so be it), it was because of the founder's personal lapses. Now, maybe that's a "bias," but not the kind you're trying to make it be.
LGutman (Ferrara, IT)
Actually you need to provide reputable citations supporting your assertion.

Mark (Pennsylvania)
Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, responded that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.” Wow. She is Steven Miller with a wig on,
Olie Olie (Truckee, CA)
@Mark Yes, she’s pretty despicable. It’s her job, but she didn’t have to take it. When Trump goes to the pokey she can go work for Mr. Kim.
Limbo Saliana (Idaho, USA)
@Mark No, Stephen Miller is a Stephanie Grisham wearing a bald cap.
Cousin Greg (Waystar Royco)
@Mark Stephanie Grisham is a (purportedly) dry-drunk who has two (!) DUI convictions on her record. That probably explains her mindset, not to mention her popularity with Trump supporters.
Meg (NY)
Unfortunately, the story is marred by the involvement of the SPLC. The SPLC long ago ceased to have any moral authority and has become just another agitprop, partisan lobbyist.
William Barnett (Eugene, Or)
@Meg Count the criminal and conflict of interest scandals: SPLC vs Trump Administration & GOP apologists. Now tell us who's ceased to have any moral authority and become just another agitprop, partisan lobbyist? Your comment wins the false equivalency prize for today.
Guy (San Francisco)
@Meg Whatever issues the SPLC has, the story paints a damning portrait of Miller and his sentiments, all supported by emails provided by someone who worked at Breitbart News.
Paul P (Greensboro NC)
kind of like the NRA, and the evangelical church.
KJ Peters (San Jose, California)
This is not new. Bannon made the decision to have Breitbart be a platform for the so called "alt right." Is everyone who self identifies as alt right a white nationalist? Probably not. But every neo nazi, white nationalist, and rebranded KKK member is and Bannon and Breitbart made the calculated decision that they we cultivate these groups and give them a voice. They use their favorite tropes in modified forms, they focus on immigration and non-white crime, and of course the anti=semetic Soros campaign. They retweet constantly with european hate groups. First Richard Spencer, now Miller. The tapes and e-mails that expose their foul inner souls will be explained away and rationalized by the Trump administration. They will say, I can't be racist, my daughter is a Jew. What they can't deny is that they have consistently played footsie with these groups for their political advantage. Shameful.
Lili Borensztein (Bethesda, MD)
For us Jews "Never Again" means for all people. Miller's family escaped pogroms in Europe and came to the US where they were welcomed. There are crooks in every race and people, there are also great people in every race, consider Madoff as one example, Sonia Sotomayor as another. Miller is an embarrassment to the Jewish people.
Paul P (Greensboro NC)
He is an embarrassment to the American people.
Mary Ann (Massachusetts)
@Lili Borensztein I truly cannot understand how Ivanka and Jared, both Jews, condone this? Does it come down to greed? I have to assume that staying in Trump’s good graces means the $$$ keep rolling in.
Paula (East Lansing, MI)
Miller's defenders claim that those of us who find his racist philosophy despicable are anti-Semitic because he is Jewish. Wonder how horrible Mr. Miller will find the Southern Poverty Law Center when he needs protection from the true anti-Semites--his buddies with the tiki torches yelling "Jews will not replace us." Stephanie Grisham is showing that she can lie as well as Huckabee-Sanders did in smearing this outstanding civil rights group. Doesn't anyone in the White House press office know there used to be a standard of telling the truth at that podium? Guess that all changed with the biggest inauguration crowd ever.
Evan (New York)
In a more normal time (ie, pre-2017), and certainly at any point in the preceding 50 years, this would be a major story and almost unimaginable - an unapologetic white nationalist as a senior adviser to an unapologetic white nationalist president. These people need to be viewed not just as threats to democracy and the rule of law but also, ultimately, to our safety. Decent people need to view this as a rolling four-year crisis and come out in massive numbers to end it next November. Then we need to press elected Democrats to pass voting rights and campaign finance reforms, bring back the fairness doctrine, prohibit social media platforms from allowing foreign infiltration, and invest in education, to inoculate the US as best as possible against their return to power.
Dave (Ohio)
@Evan Fine comment. State the problem and propose sound, needed, and workable solutions. I do believe most people have forgotten the fairness doctrine - ended not coincidentally in 1987, just in time for Fox to debut in the next decade. I assume passing voting rights also entails ending gerrymandering, which needs to end before we can even have legitimate elections.
Deanna (Roanoke, VA)
@Dave Don't forget to include overturning Citizens United. I've never been able to sit down and have a face-to-face conversation to debate ideas with a "corporation." Giving individual rights to corporations was a terrible miscarriage of justice.
Dave (Ohio)
@Deanna Oh man, Deanna!!! Absolutely. There is no logic to Citizens United or for that matter laws that establish corporations. But the article is about Steve Miller (not the "space cowboy) and that leads to another issue: how to prevent unqualified "advisors" to influence our lives and government?
John MD (NJ)
Just further evidence, as if we need more, of the multiple dazzling threads of bigotry, xenophobia, and willful ignorance that make up the fabric of this administration. It has exposed the 50% of our elected officials and 40% of our population that accept this behavior. We are in serious trouble until we change the apathy of those who want better for our country. Impeachment, appropriate as it is, changes nothing except solidify the positions of Trump's supporters.
ach (boston)
The GOP leadership on both sides of the aisle should denounce him and insist he resign. I hope the press hounds Mitch, Lindsay and Nunes until he does resign. Unacceptable and unAmerican.
JCF (Farmington, Utah)
Current impeachment arguments aside, there is clearly enough racism, organizational and managerial ineptitude, chaotic policy direction/lack thereof, mysogenism and narcissism in the current administration to convince me these are bad people "leading" our country. I don't want to go where they are leading us.
KJ Peters (San Jose, California)
@JCF The documentary of Lee Atwater gives vital information on the template to cultivate those in our country who are outright racists or those who are vunerable to their siren call. In his dying days he began to examine his life and his guilt over the tactics he used to gather votes from fringe groups. Trump and Bannon simply copied his tactics and the internet allowed them to supercharge them to great effect. Atwater wasn't a personal racist, he just cynically saw a electoral method, dog whistles, to gather votes from people who are racists. Trump and Bannon, and now Miller just made the dog whistles bull horns.
Charlie (New York City)
@KJ Peters Sigh. So it's come to this. We are holding the Lee Atwaters of the world up as comparative paragons of virtue in relation to people currently occupying the White House.
KJ Peters (San Jose, California)
@Charlie I don't admire Lee Atwater one bit. I simply recognize that he realized the terrible harm he stirred up for political gain and tried to make amends by asking for forgiveness and explaining what he did. His confession allows us to recognize the evil tactics he deployed. and helps us to expose the Millers of this world.
Gigi (Oak Park,IL)
I don't want Stephen Miller to resign. I want him to be fired!
Scott (Charlottesville)
Seriously, this is not up to NYTimes standards. "linked to white nationalists sites" is a judgement assertion, and not evidence of anything in particular. Being dissed by the Southern Poverty Law Center is not in and of itself dispositive of anything (unless you are willing to give a self-appointed group the control of your own judgements and brain)----it is an assertion that is meant to put someone in the "bad person camp" and assure the reader that they are therefore in the "good person camp", without having to think too hard about the meaning of facts (facts which are not in evidence here). NYT: I am not a fan of Trump or Miller. Not at all. Bring me facts of proscribed behavior, clear and dispositive. This article undermines your own credibility.
Tom (Austin)
@Scott I have to say Scott, the NYT is pretty clear what the accusations are. He shaped news coverage using white supremacist platforms as resources, including a specific book that promotes the idea that refugees are going to take the world over from white people. That is a fact drawn directly from the links he shared in his emails to his reporters. "In an email exchange from September 2015, Mr. Miller urged Breitbart editors to refer to “The Camp of the Saints,” a 1973 French novel that popularizes the idea that Western civilization will fall at the hands of immigrants." I am sure you've never heard of that book, but it contains some disgusting references to people of color, calling them insects continually infecting the world of white people. He wanted Brietbart reporters to use that same narrative to convey their reporting on immigration. The emails are there for you to see, I suggest reading them. That's where the facts are, the NYT is just condensing it for print.
Dubious (the aether)
@Scott, where does the article say "linked to white nationalists [sic] sites"? You can't criticize something the Times didn't say. As I write, your comment is 22 minutes old; it's possible that the Times has changed the text of the story.
Bob (Hudson Valley)
Excellent work by the the Southern Poverty Law Center. This of course goes to the core of the Trump presidency and why he is so wildly popular despite being all the norms of acceptable behavior that he ignores. Miller's immigration policies which are probably strongly influenced by his working with Jeff Sessions clearly have white nationalist written all over them. The one puzzling thing is how Miller who is Jewish can be a white nationalist since the movement is antisemitic. What drives him to support an antisemitic movement does not seem to be evident from the emails. One guess is that Miller wants to be close to power so much that he has sold out both his country with regard to its ideals and his religion to work with Trump.
Pottree (Joshua Tree)
Miller hates himself for some reasons probably unrelated to his odious racial attitudes. You could write a book. There are personalities who will go to outrageous lengths to separate themselves from the crowd and stand out as unique to assuage inner anxieties about their own worth: if just about everyone in your class at Santa Monica High is a conventional liberal Democrat, becoming a flaming white racist Republican certainly marks you as distinctive and an attention seeker. Btw, where is Mrs. Miller? There is a word for a personality like Miller: mechugena.
Brian G. Adsit (Adrian, MIchigan)
I have known and engaged in conversations with those who believe in various flavors of white supremacy. The community in which I reside is largely composed of such folk if they happen to define themselves as white. And so I am struck by a paradox. Mr. Miller is a Jew, an ethnicity despised by white supremacists. Surely, Miller must know this and yet this reporting suggests that he is sympathetic to this sort of nonsense. Is Miller self-loathing or simply trying to color Jews in a more favorable light to white supremacists at the expense of other peoples? Either position is incompatible with how our government should function.
Loren Johnson (Highland Park, CA)
Miller is a “man” who had no friends as a child. He seeks validity. He craves attention. He thinks he can ingratiate himself to bigots and be allowed entry into a club no decent person would want to be a member of. His creepiness is self evident.
KJ Peters (San Jose, California)
I grew up in Orange County, California, the home of the John Birch society. It was promoted as a anti-communist group but it also had close ties with the backlash against the effort to end segregation and the Jim Crow laws. It was strictly a republican group.. Even though they were a ally of the Republican party, the leaders in the Republican Party decided to purge this group from it's ranks because of their overt racism, even though it hurt them in certain districts. The group slowly became a non factor in national politics. Bannon , Miller, and the followers have decided to reverse this decision and cultivate the extreme edge of our political world. It doesn't matter what their personal views are. Through Breitbart they have allowed the most extreme of the white nationalist movement a place to feel welcomed. There was a time, for a while, where anyone who hinted a being associated with neo nazi, the rebranded KKK, the alt right was considered beyond the pale and were shunned. Bannon made the decision to give them a voice. The emails show that Miller feels the same. Whether he holds these views or he is just a cynical man who see's a electoral advantage to cultivate these groups is beside the point. Either way it is morally disgusting.
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Miller grew up in Santa Monica, which is liberal, affluent, and very safe. His attitudes were cooked up by him, not from attitudes where he lived or having been subject to a tough environment.
Jonathan Katz (St. Louis)
@KJ Peters Republican? All the notorious Southern racists (Bilbo, Wallace, etc.) were Democrats.
Chris (Georgia)
@Jonathan Katz That was then, the southern Democrats. In the 1970s and 1980s they became Republicans. And their heirs are still racists.
Dagwood (San Diego)
Amazing thing about the Trump era: each “revelation”, including Mr Miller’s emails, is already known by everyone. Trump asked for election help. Trump obstructed Congress and justice. Trump is hooked to Putin. Trump cheats everyone he can. FoxNews is state propaganda, not news. There are no unknowns, only perhaps some juicy details. But everyone knows the main things. Everyone knows the truth. So we needn’t ask “did he do it?”, only “will he get away with it?” The crimes themselves are a given and not enough care, and too many think they’re cool.
SWLibrarian (Texas)
If verified as authentic, media should publish the contents of these messages to allow the public, especially Republicans who believe the current policy is not driven by racism, the opportunity to read the truth about who and what is driving current US immigration policy.
Bret (MI)
I'm not sure if there's been another more hateful, spiteful, cruel person that has ever had access to such power in the US, at least in my lifetime. He savors conflict. He embraces and brings forth everything that is disgusting in those he surrounds himself with. And he does all this just to entertain himself.
JB (Marin, CA)
The title of the article should read, “Before and after joining the WH, Steven Miller has always pushed White Nationalist theories”
HMP (SFL)
Mr. Miller is the descendant of Jewish immigrants who came to America at the turn of the century. His own uncle, Dr. David Glosser has condemned his nephew as "an immigration hypocrite." Their relatives came to the U.S. in the early 1900s from Europe, fleeing anti-Jewish violence. Dr. Glosser has written that he has shuddered to think "of what would have become of the Glossers had the same policies Stephen so coolly espouses" been in effect back then. How has this young man become so hateful in his anti-immigration vitriol? He has left a profound blemish on his own family as well as on an entire nation.
db2 (Phila)
What do you mean by “ Before”?
Tucson Yaqui (Tucson, AZ)
America is founded on genocide: Native Peoples who today are sentenced to poverty on reservations created by the federal government. Strange to note anyone speaking of 'white genocide' today much less the architect of 'Immigration' policy.
Christina (Europe)
@Tucson Yaqui "America is founded on genocide" is a tired trope. It wasn't the intention of the settlers to commit genocide. They pushed inward, displacing native Americans, many of whom were nomadic. There were many massacres on both sides. More treaties were broken than honored by the settlers, but this is not genocide. How was Carnegie Steel founded on genocide? Ford Motor Company? DuPont? The industrial base of the U.S., which made it the richest country in the world, was founded on innovation and hard work.
Kenny B (Fort Lauderdale)
Steven Miller needs to take the short walk over to the Holocaust Museum and look at the photographs of his slaughtered brethren. His Rabbi and mother must be so proud...
mike (nola)
no one with a brain can be surprised about Miller having close ties to both Breitbart and white supremacist organizations.
KennethWmM (Paris)
Miller’s sewn-on xenophobic face and racist ideals make him a very unlikely presidential adviser. And, naturally, he is part of Trump’s cohort of miscreants squatting in the WH. Good luck to the USA.
TJGM (San Francisco)
Racial science appears alive and well in this White House. Astonishing that people still believe in this stuff.
William Barnett (Eugene, Or)
@TJGM The ONLY science alive and well in this White House
Cousy (New England)
"...Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, responded that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.”..." Huh? I don't always agree with SPLC, but Grisham's characterization is truly unhinged.
Metastasis (Texas)
This just in: obvious sociopath has a track record of expressing sociopathic opinions.
Jube (Scottsdale)
Anything from the SPLC has to be taken with a huge grain of salt these days. They have lost all credibility when they smeared Sam Harris, Nawaz, etc.
Oliver (Key West)
I guess Stephen hasn’t yet gotten to the chapter in the white nationalist textbook that discusses their underlying theory that Jews are not only non-white, but are actually enemies of the white race. If that proves too difficult for him, he can simply watch the movie ”Jews Will Not Replace Us, Charlottesville, 2017.”
Debbie (Atlanta)
Miller should resign immediately. There is no place for this type of view coming from someone who is a top advisor in the US. This is not what my forefathers fought for, this is not who we are.
Charlie Messing (Burlington, VT)
@Debbie If Miller ever leaves, he'll be kicking and screaming the whole way. He'll be behind bars yelling "I'm innocent" until he is Gone. Should be pretty interesting to see what History has to say about him.
jonT (chippewa falls, wi)
@Debbie Trump should fire him immediately just before he fires himself. It has been plain as day forever that Miller does not belong anywhere near the policy decisions of this nation.
Fred Frahm (Boise)
I note that the White House did not contest the existence of the emails or the content, but did attack the source and called its message a smear campaign. That makes me think attacking the messenger is all the White House has in its cartridge pouch, but the news media should do due diligence and dig into the bona fides of the emails. Has Miller issued any statement?
James (Savannah)
Re/ the headline: “seeks” to illustrate, or “illustrates?” Yet another reason why Miller and his TPS reports need to be immediately relegated to history’s dustbin.
Mr. Mark (California)
"I'm so surprised by this," said no one.
MIMA (heartsny)
Stephen Miller will never resign. He’s in his glory. And just became engaged. Maybe getting ready to have Donald Trump in the wedding party, or having the gala affair held at Mar-a-Lago. Stephen Miller is the epitome of living inhumanity. And will be right there at Donald Trump’s side, no matter how long, and no matter how the presidency ends. Hard to believe so much hatred in someone so young. Maybe not hard to believe, just disheartening.
susan (nyc)
Some time ago Vanity Fair magazine did a piece on Miller. People that they spoke to went on record about Miller. This guy does not have one redeeming quality.
sarah (seattle)
Yeah, he really drained the Swamp.
Ted (NY)
Stephen Miller is nothing more than a collaborator with nationalist groups. It’s reminiscent of collaborators with Mussolini and the Nazis who were betrayed in the end and had lethal endings. What does he think he’ll get in the end. Though, big Trump donors like Sheldon Adelson, Stephen Ross, Ronald Lauder must be on the same page as Miller.
Madeline Conant (Midwest)
Stephen Miller equates "commie flags" to the ubiquitous use of Confederate flags? Has anyone seen "commie flags" at left-wing protest marches? What do they even look like? And yet we've all seen Nazi flags and Confederate flags galore. How sad it must look inside Mr. Miller's head.
Cass (Missoula)
I have no love for either Trump or Miller, but the SPLC has been discredited by their failed attempt to smear Maajid Nawaz, a proud Muslim reformer, as Islamaphobic. Maybe Miller is an actual White supremacist. I’d like to know what Miller said. So, why didn’t the didn’t the SPLC publish Miller’s actual emails rather than a summary that may be out of context. If I see one private email where Miller says something along the lines of, “We need to keep all people from this ethnic group out of the country,” I’ll believe he’s an actual White supremacist.
Some Dude (CA Sierra Country)
@Cass SPLC published a sincere apology to and about Nawaz. Had Miler, or Trump, apologized to any of 5 people they've attacked? Let's ask the Kahn family, or the John McCain family. There's a very long list of Trump bullying and zero apologies. SPLC will be publishing the emails.
Cass (Missoula)
@Some Dude I cannot stand Trump. I voted against Trump. This isn't about Trump, who's a liar, but about the SPLC.
M (Pennsylvania)
This guy has built a career on hatred of other people. He is no Joe the Plumber, that's for sure. We see you Stephen.
Michael Engel (Ludlow MA)
It is interesting that the article fails to mention that Miller is Jewish. Why spare us that detail, New York Times? That relevant fact is beyond ironic--it is appalling. But of course in a world where someone like Netanyahu governs Israel with the aid of racists and religious fanatics, it is not surprising. As a proud Jew, I am tremendously saddened by the feeling of shame when I read about people like Miller.
Judith Lockwood (Marcellus, NY)
@Michael Engel the fact that Mr Miller is Jewish is really irrelevant. If it were the case that he is Lutheran, would you point that out as well? Think about it!
Dubious (the aether)
@Judith, it matters because, among other reasons, white supremacists typically do not consider Jews to be members of the "white" race. Miller is promoting a club that probably wouldn't want him as a member.
Number23 (New York)
And with a straight face -- and the endorsement of the KKK and other hate groups -- Trump is reaching out to African Americans of late for their support in the 2020 election.
yessar (canada)
While the way the White House press secretary responded is totally fallacious and quite frankly irrelevant, but the Southern Poverty Law Center isn't without some issues. The reading of the following paragraph attempts to describe SoPo as a purely benevolent, altruistic, virtuous organization which it definitely is not. It has mischaracterized and has become a polemic organization in recent times. At least in the last 2 paragraphs NYT details this some. But the issue with that is how the argument is framed. They given credence to the WH's response by showing some illegitimacy/legtitimacy of the organization which the conversation shouldn't even be about. This is a clear case of attacking the messenger and the NYT shouldn't get involved in defending or attacking the messenger. What is important are the emails and their details.
Thinking (Orlando, Florida)
Sad that such hatred is espoused by a jew. Doesn't he know that somewhere down the line the White Nationalists will target him?
Biji Basi (S.F.)
@Thinking Someone who knowingly and frequently denies Torah through his/her actions is not a Jew. Torah emphatically and often commands us to welcome the stranger and treat them as our own. Stephen Miller obviously strongly disagrees with that core belief. So referring to him as a Jew is not accurate.
mls (nyc)
@Thinking The underlying, and presumably unconscious, psychological motivation for Miller's attacks against people of color is exactly that: his fear of being targeted as a Jew. His desire to align himself with the aggressor is a defensive posture based in the wish that he will not become a victim.
Anne (Denver, CO)
@Thinking And Trump will turn on him, too. It’s inevitable.
CA (Denver)
Thank you SPLC for all you do!!!
Paco47 (NYC)

RR (Boston)
Too bad Judaism doesn't have excommunication ...
Ellie Green (DC)
@RR Actually, Judaism does have excommunication, but it is used rarely (e.g. Baruch Spinoza). If it can be applied to unethical behavior, my list is quite long. Sigh
Matthew (NJ)
White nationalists wouldn’t bother looking into it in any case if he got excommunicated. They will peg him as a Jew and march him away. Miller must be stupid enough to think he will get some special dispensation. It’s the ultimate in self-hatred.
TJGM (San Francisco)
@Matthew So true. To white nationalists,'Jewish' is a racial category, not a religion. Their Nazi ancestors made no distinction between religious Jews and Christian converts.
Two Americas (South Salem)
Miller hasn't gotten "fired". He must be a white nationalist to have lasted this long.
Allen82 (Oxford)
The irony is that Miller's Jewish background is antithetical to White Supremacy, as are other "minorities" in the eyes of White Supremacists. Does he actually think he will be accepted by WASP's, who want a "pure" race? Has he forgotten, or ignored, the history of the Nazi's and the Holocaust? Who's heritage is Miller trying to reject? Who does he want to be, if not himself?
mls (nyc)
@Allen82 'Whose' heritage.
Mark (El Paso)
@Allen82 -I’ll go one step further and say that Jewish leaders have a responsibility to point out Miller’s antithetical views and call for his resignation. If silence was the problem in 1938, why is it not a problem now?
TSJ (California)
@Allen82 Don't even try to make sense of the alt-right. It's an absolute fool's errand. Under its umbrella there are Asian WN's, Indian WN's, Jewish WN's and many others with half-baked ideas on everything from race and multiculturalism to economics and politics. It's a pretty ethnically diverse lot, funnily enough. Ultimately, the recurring theme in their perspectives is hate. Frustration. Bitterness.
Steve (Baltimore)
I am not surprised by this at all. Also not surprised that the racist trumpsters will continue to support this administration.
John McLaughlin (Bernardsville, NJ)
Watch the Trump administration keep Stephen Miller as a senior adviser to the president upon learning this news. Will tell you all you need to know about this rotten administration, a cesspool of racism, disinformation, and hate.
LS (Maine)
@John McLaughlin Of course they will. He's a troll, just like Trump. They love doing what they think of as baiting "liberals". Childish and stupid. Unfortunately at our current moment, also dangerous.
Charlesbalpha (Atlanta)
"Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary, responded that the Southern Poverty Law Center was an “utterly discredited, long-debunked far-left smear organization.”" Sounds exactly like the insults the Trumpists use against the people favoring impeachment. It's like Orwell's satire on canned political statements in "1984" -- "sounds emitted by the larynx without any involvement by higher brain processes."
Jedidiah (Los Angeles)
Further proof the Miller is a monstrous and sick individual surprises no one but the hard evidence here should be a useful tool for hounding him out of the administration. Hopefully the inestimable SPLC keeps a steady drip of revelations about his emails all week. In the broader picture it’s helpful in reminding moderate conservatives that the GOP relies on courting racists to maintain support. So if you’re a normal person who votes Republican, you’re encouraging people like Miller.
SN (Philadelphia)

“I would be happy if not a single refugee foot ever again touched American soil.” Stephen Miller When people do things and say things that show their cruelty, believe them.
Lili Borensztein (Bethesda, MD)
@Edgar It goes again of what we, Jews, said "never again". It applies to all people, not only us. Shame on Miller whose family came to the US escaping pogroms.
DL (Pittsburgh)
@Edgar Miller's grandparents were refugees from anti-Jewish pogroms in Belarus. Now, some of his own family members call him a hypocrite and repudiate his policies. https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/08/13/stephen-miller-is-an-immigration-hypocrite-i-know-because-im-his-uncle-219351
Kelly (Canada)
@Edgar Ah yes, Stephen Miller, he of the dead-looking eyes...and apparently hollow soul. I am thankful that his family and others counteract his views and policies.
Paul C. McGlasson (Athens, GA)
Miller did not guide the Trump Administration in the direction of white nationalism. White conservative evangelicalism did that, with its (non-Christian) attitudes toward race, nation, and immigration, going back even before Trump himself. Trump brought the slogans, and the promise of influence and power. Miller simply brought the expertise into how to convert these vile impulses into equally vile public policies. And here we are. A nation at war with its own history, its own future interests, its own very essence. Miller is a tool, not a cause. He is being used. It will be up to historians to lay full blame at the doorsteps of the true users.
The Day Has Arrived (4G Universe)
@Paul C. McGlasson Stephen Miller is both a tool and a cause. He has been like this all his life, and was hated and despised by his peers and teachers throughout school and his career. This man is a classic psychopath, and has honed his survival skills to become a useful tool to Trump. But Miller is also a generator of cruelty, repression, abuse and injustice that is uniquely him, and having been placed in power by Trump, is a source of the heart-wrenching misery and despair that immigrants and asylum seekers feel today.
Dawn (Colorado)
Mr. Miller has long been recognized has the mastermind behind Trump’s immigration policy and much of his strong anti-Muslims and anti-Hispanic rhetoric. However, the release of these e-mails confirms a much deeper white supremacy thread to Mr. Miller’s ideology which is not acceptable to the concepts put forth in the Declaration of Independence, “All men are created equal”. What is worrisome is that this grave issue will be overlooked during impeachment proceedings but as several Congresswoman have already said Miller must resign. The President by continuing to employ Miller is sending the message that he is okay with white supremacy something we have suspected for awhile. This is one time that guilt by association does pertain.
Bob R (Portland)
"The law center’s investigation, which the group says it will turn into a series, seeks to illustrate how Mr. Miller brought anti-immigrant beliefs to the White House and turned them into policy." The problem is that I've long-assumed this to be the case, as have many others, but it has done no good. I don't imagine that more concrete evidence will change people's minds.
