Do be careful, Jimmy. We NEED you!

Judged by some as a failure by many as President, he will be remembered as one of the class acts of humanity. The ignoramus in the White House, who is most definitely an epic failure as President, will never be considered a class human being.

Jimmy Carter may be the only truly Christian president we have had in my lifetime. He embodies the best of his faith, unlike the charlatan currently occupying the White House, who has just added one of the most vainglorious grifters of the "prosperity gospel" to his White House staff. I miss the cardigan sweater, the solar panels on the White House, the simple, honest decency of a president who doesn't just profess his faith but lives it.
Lilly (New Hampshire)
Someone who truly understands that no matter how much you have or don’t have, you can always make the world a better place. Respect and Love, from a fellow citizen.
Barbara Morrell (California)
Jimmy will go down in history as a sterling example of how good men behave.

I had the great privilege of meeting President Carter. He will go down in history as a very great President, especially when we start honoring peacemakers rather than warmongers. He showed everyone how an ex-President ought to act. He was cheated out of a second term by Reagan's unscrupulous negotiations w/Iran. He has long since become our greatest national treasure. He and Bernie Sanders will go down in history as two of God's greatest gifts to this country, squandered by the unseeing and ignoble. He reminds me of another great peacemaker of our time, the late Dag Hammarskjold. He has the same humility and relationship to God, as expressed in H's "Markings," to which I believe he wrote a preface. I pray for his speedy recovery and ask God's support for Rosalyn and the family. Blessed are the peacemakers.

President Carter received no "redemption" as a result of his good works because he committed no act requiring forgiveness. Had he been re-elected we would most likely have been living on a planet with a future instead of one facing apocalypse. He promoted renewable energy and energy conservation at a time when no other national politician could see the need. Instead, Americans quailed at the challenge and elected the first in a long line of fools, a person who removed the solar panels from the White House and promoted ecological destruction with appointments of people like James Watt. It's the American public that requires the redemption, and it won't get it.
Kent Anderson (Sterling Heights, Mi.)
It is too bad he didn't win a second term. I still cringe whenever I hear George Will on how bad Trump is. I can never forget what he said on election night, 1980, "They finally finished counting the votes. Goldwater won." No, George, Reagan won and we lost. President Carter wasn't the greatest president, but he was a decent man who was punished for being decent. I hope he lives long enough to vote next November 3.
Kris (South Dakota)
Oh, to have a President like President Carter. A compassionate, wise, caring individual. Even if you don't agree with his political views, you have to recognize his humanity and his intelligence. May he live many more years to be an example of what a President should strive for in his daily life.
Barbara (SC)
Mr. Carter has been a role model for millions of Americans, especially American volunteers. His continuing work to help the poor through Habitat for Humanity and other groups has improved the lives of thousands if not tens of thousands. I wish him well and hope he recovers fully from this latest trauma.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
"But after his latest hospitalization, he again drove himself back into his active post-presidential life, showing up in Nashville to work on a Habitat for Humanity project just as he had done for years since leaving the White House. He sported a black eye and a head bandage but otherwise appeared undaunted by his physical challenges." What a remarkable man and role model if ever there was one. He gives new meaning to the word "hope", "charity", "generosity" and "compassion". I have always felt a special endearment to former President Carter because of had it not been for his generous college grant programs back in the day, I would never had been able to afford much less attend and graduate from college. I always thought of those generous grants as gifts from President Carter to do good in college and make a difference in the world upon my graduation. Not sure how much of a difference I've made as a social worker and suicide counselor, but from the bottom of my heart, I thank you Mr. President and continue to pray for you and a strong recovery. I did not always agree with Mr. Carter's politics, but his style, class, elegance and kindness shown and exhibited towards so many people has always left a wonderful mark on my heart and soul. I have much affection and respect and hope for your Mr. President. Take care and the very best to your family as well.
Steve (IL)
@Marge Keller Very well said. If you approach your job as a social worker and counselor in any way close to the way President Carter did, and continues to do you are making a difference whether you know it or not.
DSD (St. Louis)
Our only truly decent living ex-President. The polar opposite of the Republican thing in the White House. Honest, sincere, compassionate, caring, selfless not selfish, etc.
Panos (Athens, Greece)
Get well soon Mr. President. We still need you.
Arif (Albany, NY)
Let's hope for President Carter's speedy and full recovery but let's also remember to appreciate him and those around us before it's too late. That is exactly the spirit that President Carter embodies.
Larry D (New York City)
THIS- is what a President Looks Like. THIS- is what Democracy looks like, godspeed Mr. Carter on your full recovery.

Dear President Carter, We worked on your Iowa campaign when you were running for President. You worked right along side me and my husband Franklin D. Clark as we set up tables & chairs for a rally, I believe it was in Corning Iowa. We love you President Carter and we found out first hand what a caring and wonderful person you are. Get well...Sincerely and with kind regards, Barbara j Clark
luther (CA)
The best former President in our history.
Amy White (Wyomissing PA)
On the leg of our trip from China to Philadelphia that took us from San Francisco to Cincinnati, we, with three of the families who all traveled together to adopt our babies, shared a plane with President Carter. Before the plane took off, the attendant told us all that President Carter would be coming through the plane to shake hands. When he came to our seats, he picked up our 20-month old son and said, "I wanted to see this little fella." My husband told him that Luke had just become, officially, a citizen at the port of entry. He said, looking Luke in the eyes, "In that case, let me be among the first to welcome you to the United States of America." I thanked him for his efforts that made it possible for people like us to travel to China so easily to bring home these precious babies. He was modest about the praise, smiled, and moved on to the rest of the passengers. We were blessed, indeed.

What goes around comes around. After the public and elected officials treated him so rudely during the last years of his Presidency he will outlive them all....graciously, democratically, selflessly, humanitarianly. Including our current vainglorious ‘leader’. Much love Jimmy, be well and peace always.

I wish Mr. Carter well, and also wish we all had access to this level of health care. I live in northern Maine, where we no longer have primary care doctors, just PAs. We are lucky if we live within 30 minutes of a hospital. We womenfolk are lucky if a doctor takes our pain or complaints seriously (a neighbor was diagnosed with MS only after an ER doc 100 miles from home implied it was just some female problem and sent her home). I had planned to settle here, but with multiple chronic conditions I fear for my ability to stay healthy.
raymond frederick (nyc)
maybe not the best president but certainly the most honest decent president we ever had. i recall when drug kingpin nicky barnes was on the cover of the NYT magazine jimmy carter moved to have him prosecuted instead of glorified i can only think if it was trump he might have put him on his cabinet. astounding to think where we are now. get well president carter america needs your moral leadership.
Cassandra (New Mexico)
Oh, that every former president would be so effective at bettering humanity after holding office. Pres. Carter is a class act. Get well soon!
MIMA (heartsny)
President Carter is one of the bravest people we would ever have in our country’s history, in so many ways, yet his humility reigns. He carries on with most sincere integrity and his work is indeed a gift to humanity, not just through Habitat but in everything. Our best wishes for a safe recovery, and Rosalyn and family, we are thinking of you, too.
Andrea Seabridge (Allentown NJ)
Jimmy Carter is a wonderful man. We can all learn from his example. Hope he heals and lives on to be that example.
Le Jeune (Vouvant France)
@Andrea Seabridge I met the man twice . When I worked on advertising for his presidential campaign, and many years later attended his Sunday school class in Plains Ga. with my mother-in-law. Born a Carter in south Ga. she often claimed to be related to the President. He patiently talked with her, and carefully listened to a very long list of possible family connections . Then along with Rosalyn posed for photos. Yes, truly a wonderful man.
Tim (New Jersey)
Sending my sincere wishes for a speedy recovery to one of the finest men to ever hold the presidency. President Carter is the best of role models. Every young person should study his extraordinary and selfless life and strive to follow the example he has set. May God bless you, President Carter.
Beatrice23 (Paris, France)
We miss you President Carter. You have done so much for the world and set a shining example for all of us. Best wishes for a painless and speedy recovery.
Ron (Monroe, Michigan)
President Carter is probably the most honest, highest integrity individual we've had in that office in the last 75 years or more. Which was probably his downfall. He told the actual truth, and nothing but the truth. Unfortunately, the public has a penchant for liking lies, and false promises. I do hope he keeps going, but no-one escapes the ravages of time, no matter what they do. To have reached the age he has is incredible, and can probably be attributed to his 'get out there and do things' way of living. If there is any president I would care to emulate, it's President Carter. He has quite the record, and with a Nobel Peace Prize under his belt, well, what else could one achieve to secure a noble place in History? May he recover, and if he does not, he has long ago earned his rest. He shall be greatly missed in that case, as an embodiment of all that is good in America.
Manuela Bonnet-Buxton (Cornelius, Oregon)
I wish him a speedy recovery as we need him in the country to provide a balance of decency and honesty in a swamp of corruption and political self serving that Washington DC has become and to remind people how to respect one another.
Jane B (Wilmington, DE)
My opinion of the Carters rises every time I hear about him. Imagine, asking God for a proper attitude towards death. I wish more leaders could be like him.
A. jubatus (New York City)
I'm going to be selfish and say that I couldn't take President Carter (or RBG) leaving us right now. It would be too much to bear. Please get well soon, sir.
Joe S. (California)
A good man and a fine public servant. Thank you for all you have done for this world, Mr. President, and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Richard Waugaman, M.D. (Chevy Chase MD)
We all wish President Carter a full and speedy recovery. He has always been an inspiration. Especially in these dark days of President Trump. I would speculate he may have developed a subdural hematoma from his falls. If so, the procedure to remove it has a good likelihood of success.
Bon (AZ)
Jimmy Carter is and has always been a national treasure, doing what he can to make all lives better. May God bless him, and when it's his time comes, ease his passing.
silver vibes (Virginia)
This is a disturbing sign for President Carter and his family. At his age, failing health is to be expected even though he continues to show resiliency and bounce back from setbacks. Stay strong, Mr. President.
Alan in Amsterdam (Amsterdam)
I worked door to door passing out leaflets for Jimmy Carter long before I could vote. And I’ve loved and admired him ever since. His integrity, intelligence, and kindness remain an intense beacon of light. His character helped redeem our nation from another republican made episode of darkness. His inspiration and example is needed now than ever before. You are a hero Mr. President. Thank you for your service to our nation. May you recover quickly, or painlessly join the angels where you and Rosalynn both belong.
MIMA (heartsny)
@Alan in Amsterdam I worked for his campaign in a very Republican WIsconsin County while working a full time job putting my husband through college. I was absolutely shocked when I got a hand written card from Rosalyn right before the election, and then invited to his inauguration afterwards. (Couldn’t afford to go, but the thought was there) Such class.... I get those pieces out now to remind me we have seen better, many, many better days. Pinch me. We really have. MIMA

He has achieved much more than a measure of redemption. He has become an American hero and model for his work on behalf of those who have need for loving kindness, decency, justice and, yes, decent housing. Unfortunately, the current president and his minions have no interest in following his example.
Leslie (Amherst)
A man truly worthy of admiration and the moniker, Mr. President. I wish you a fully recovery, President Carter.
Kevin (Colorado)
God willing, he overcomes this setback too. Regardless of politics, we can still use his moral compass to contrast how the current occupant of the White House is acting and compare it against someone who sat in the same office and knows what morality is.
D M (Austin, TX)
While not a particularly popular President, Jimmy Carter is ranked high among the most decent human beings, and is the most decent President we have ever had, in my book.
Nightwood (MI)
@D M I agree but former President Obama has and had a firm grip on decency. May God bless both of them.
TWShe Said (Je suis la France)
Speedy Recovery to the Most Giving President Ever........
dj (vista)
My best to the Carters.
Naila Moghul (Boston)
Bringing up the rear of the decency brigade, Mr. Carter has become an anachronism in his own lifetime.
Jane B (Wilmington, DE)
@Naila Moghul , I think/hope you meant to say "leading the decency brigade."
Michael Kittle (Vaison la Romaine, France)
Falls are one of the greatest dangers for all ages and even more dangerous for the older population. Best regards to President Carter!
