Sorry, we’re not accepting new applications. And can someone please tell Hillary that those “many, many, many” people who are urging her to run are not friends? Thanks.
5
Can all these democrats just stay home because we have enough already thanks.
5
Talk about a waste of money...
3
Atay home it's already too crowded, and if you were serious where were you in the beginning, you just can't drop in at the end and figure that you will get any attention.
3
For God's sake, and the country's too, get David Patrick into the race. As a former governor he has the best credentials of
of anyone in the race with previous governmental executive experience; former governors usually win races and senators do not. In addition he should appeal to Obama supporters and Obama was far more popular that Trump.
1
Ha! Most definitely not
1
I wonder if we will hear all of the same criticisms previously directed at Mr. Bloomberg is Mr Patrick also joins the race. You know, all that stuff about building a base, putting in time at debates, etc. Will the tribalism that divides Dems from centrists across the country also prevents us from exploring the best candidates, of every color and class?
I am from Massachusetts and I can't say that I'm thrilled about having two candidates from the Bay State in the sweepstakes. He has a great back story and watching him on Axe Files he was impressive, But he ruled out a run. If he can't keep his word to himself, I don't know if I can trust anything he says. VP? Yes we can!!
1
@CHARLES 1A
We have three. Bill Weld, ex-governor on the Republican side. And Mitt Romney might as well be in the race too, he’s involved enough.
Really, does anyone believe a Black man, no matter how qualified could win in this election at this time? There should be just 1 goal and that is to remove Trump. If the Midwest and South will vote for Biden I will too. At least he understands how the government works and will be able tot hire qualified people to run the government.
4
@M Vitelli Why couldn't a black candidate win? Has Trump's white nationalist support clouded your opinion. Any reasonable candidate could beat Trump.
2
Dear lord, now we really are going to lose to the Republicans and Trump. Is the Democratic Party in 2019 really that clueless about what the voters living in the majority of the interior of the country really want, think and do, away from the elitist east and west coastal major metropolitan areas and academic higher-ed institutions??
3
A mediocre governor at best. A term beset by scandals. No outstanding legacy. Even as a committed democrat, I can remember Mitt Romney as having had more legislative success. Patrick would only muddy the field.
5
I’m a lifelong resident of Massachusetts. Governor Patrick is a likable and eloquent talker for sure, but not big on major accomplishments. As such is not going to beat Donald Trump. Isn’t that the goal here Democrats?
5
ANOTHER CANDIDATE? There are already plenty.

"Days after Michael Bloomberg began taking steps to enter the 2020 race, Mr. Patrick’s conversations with top Democrats are the latest evidence of an unsettled presidential primary field."
Actually, the outcome of the Democratic Primary is very "settled" -- it will likely be Warren, Sanders or maybe Buttigieg -- everything's falling into place for that as Biden fades.
This fact has caused the oligarchs to become "unsettled," which is fine with me.
There is no way that the Warren/Sanders/Buttigieg constituency is going to abandon these three. We have been organizing for a real progressive ever since Obama (the false progressive) became president.
Obama was a great president, but he was not a policy progressive who represented the will of the people. He was a dedicated servant of the status quo, and considering all the sabotage he had to put up with from the Republicans, he did an incredible -- even miraculous -- job at the helm of the nation, but he did not advocate for progressive policies of the deep structural change now coming to the forefront of the Democratic Party.
Not only is Trump terrified. The oligarchs are terrified and the DNC and DCCC are terrified -- their worst nightmare is about to come true -- democracy is about to prevail inside the Democratic Party -- and they are going to be shunted aside.
6
@Kip Leitner
If you are using the term oligarch to refer to Bloomberg, than that is a misrepresentation. The word oligarch means something specific. Look it up. Russia has them in spades. The Trump Republicans have them. But the Democrats don't, and Bloomberg certainly isn't one. That kind of sloppy misrepresentation helps only Trump. Yep, Bloomberg is a (real) billionaire. He will need to work day and night to overcome those epic billionaire blinders. But he is a legitimate candidate and a legitimate Democratic party candidate. He was a very successful mayor of one of the largest cities in the world. His positions on gun control, woman's rights (abortion rights), etc. are more progressive than those of Sanders. Obama was a progressive. But he was a progressive who ran into a brick wall of reality. You folks could do with a dose of realism now and then. Obama was no servant of anybody. That is condescending and untrue. He did everything any progressive could have done, under the circumstances, and Pelosi did the same on his behalf. As this article and a pile of others have said, Democrats are worried that none of the candidates have the chops to beat Trump. Your claiming otherwise is silly and yet another misrepresentation. We would take you folks more seriously if you stuck more closely to the facts.
2
Establishment Democrats are panicking: they realize the election might be out of their hands with real change (Sanders, Warren, Yang) looming on the horizon.
2
@jw
Dontcha think Democrats are worried because it looks like none of their present crop of candidates can beat Trump? As this article and a pile of others have all said.
1
It’s incredible that in such a crowded field we need more candidates but we do. We need someone who can shine, is eloquent and comes off good on camera. So far I don’t think we have the woman or man capable of beating a Trump.
I welcome this good and competent former governor into the race!
2
Another example of a politician consumed by his own ego and utterly oblivious to his political environment. Patrick was and is a mediocrity, serving an unmemorable two terms as governor of the Bay State. But somehow he thinks he has what it takes to be a great president. And as others note on this message board, we have more than enough Democratic candidates, and the last thing most voters want is yet another one. Incidentally, that goes for billionaire Bloomberg too. Just what is the matter with these people????
8
Who else will join the field? Kermit the Frog? Cookie Monster?
Seriously, what the Democrats seem to do not understand is if they want their agenda implement by a Democratic President, they also need the Senate. So what about strong candidate running for Senator?
9
The lack of comments on this story says it all, nobody seems super excited for Mr. Patrick's entry into to race.
2
Martin Sheen should run since he's got the most experience from The West Wing.
3
Please. No more candidates. I wish Perez would grow a backbone and start keeping people from entering. It seems like when a candidate drops out, another one thinks it's the appropriate time to jump in.
We are three months from Iowa and there are still double digit numbers of people running for president. Enough! We should be consolidating by now, anything but expanding the field...
8
Progressive is not to be contrasted with moderate. Moderation is the perfect political platform NOT a mash between progressive (change for the better) and regressive (return to the bad old days).
4
Gov. Patrick like Bloomberg want to rewrite history when one was a Governor of Massachusetts, and one was the Mayor of NYC.
Both did little to move the needle for minorities and for middle class people who were struggling.
We dont need any saviors to come in like John Wayne and try to save the day, we have progressive candidates who have been interacting with us for months and who we trust. Patrick & Bloomberg have a very serious trust problem with the voters.
These men who want to help the democrats is to campaign for everyone who is running on the democratic ticket in every state so that we can remove all GOP from political offices so that the country can move forward and not backward.
5
Proof that none of the current crop stand a chance against Mr. Trump. The democrats are circling the drain and these phones impeachment hearings are not helping.
1
Does anyone really think a Bain Capital executive and acolyte of the Clintons and Obama is the answer? Maybe, but after eight disappointing years of Obama, and his anointment of Hillary to carry on the status quo that ultimately led to a Trump presidency, I just don't see it happening. To me, this reeks of the donor class desperation as they see Biden fade away into irrelevancy.
9
Thank you very much. However, we already do have the candidate who handily beats Trump and finishes the work of FDR. Bernie2020
1
Patrick was a failure as governor. Sorry. The national press needs to do a deep dive into his record. Patrick started out hopefully, but his term was rife with scandal. Worst of all was the New England Compounding Pharmacy tragedy where people died. Patrick’s office handled this crisis poorly, bullying staff in state agencies, looking for people to blame when the blame lay with him. Readers need to search the Boston Globe to get a true picture of Deval. The people around Patrick, from the get go, where always more co corned with his national image rather than what was best for the commonwealth. That was their sole motivating force. He would be a terrible candidate and worse president
5
I don't understand what he hopes to gain from running other than money. He was a terrible Governor during his second term and lots of evidence to prove it. He would never win a Statewide race again in Massachusetts after experiencing his lame duck final term.
5
He would make a good Vice President.
Back here in MA, Patrick is a respected former governor. So is Romney and yes, William Weld is held in a certain esteem - all honorable politicians who many of us voted for more than once.
He would be seeking that "moderate lane" that Joe has been limping along in. Bloomberg and Patrick see the weak antelope and are ready to give chase. But that is the flaw in the conventional thinking.
The "moderate guy" is polling at about 20%. The "real change folks" add up to a lot more. Combine the numbers of Warren and Sanders, throw in a bit of Buttigieg and some Yang and you get a Democratic electorate who want REAL CHANGE.
We want a change from Trumps madness, for sure. But we also want significant structural change without sounding like lefty commies. THAT is why Mayor Pete is so popular.
It just keeps getting more interesting and worrisome, eh?
Bottom line: I think WE'LL get behind anyone who isn't Trump. As the bumper sticker says: "Literally, Anyone Else 2020"
But what will the folks in the swing states think of Bloomberg or Patrick? Please get real. Winning those 5 or 6 states will determine the future of the planet.
11
The Democratic primary is unsettled for whom exactly?
The rich billionaires? The corrupt politicians? The New York Times?
2
I was thrilled to hear of Mr Patrick's possible run. I am a staunch Democrat, I am on top of the news and well informed. Though I admire the candidates tenacity in running I have been undecided. I can't seem to pick one candidate as my favorite. I just don't think any of them have the it factor. I am a fan of Mr Patricks and would absolutely endorse him if he chooses to run. He is smart, dynamic and I believe he would bring the independents and undecided to his campaign. I know it's late in the game but for Mr Patrick a quality candidate we still have a year. Go for it. I'm in.
4
The large field of presidential candidates has been good for Americans to hear lots of new and interesting policies and ideas. Since the start, the Democrats have had three fine people at the top — Biden, Sanders and Warren have proven that they have the staying power (and enthusiasm). It's just a matter of time before one of them "breaks away." That probably won't happen until the early states vote but that's the way it should be.
5
Just what we need at this late hour another president want to be. Where has this guy and Bloomberg been for the last year? Patrick may be the best thing since the internet but talk about a day late and a dollar short. While the other candidates where in the trenches slugging it out these guys were on the side line waiting to feast on the carrion? It just comes across as opportunistic to me. If the Left keeps up the Goldilocks act of trying to find the right candidate Trump is going to have a walk to The White House in 2020. Searching for a candidate no too left, not too right, not too green and such is killing us.
27
As governor, he was fine but not amazing.
As a presidential candidate, it just might work. I can’t think of many candidates who Black people, white progressives and business types can all live with.
He will inspire no one. His family issues are tricky to say the least. He won’t have a huge agenda.
But I can deal with Deval if other people want it.
3
@Cousy
Black voters will not support Patrick just because he is black. Ask Kamala Harris how that expectation worked for her.
