Perry to Resign as Energy Secretary

Those in Trump's political circle start out incompetent, corrupt, or both. But they all seem to end up both. Perry has always struck me as an appalling lightweight. I bet he flips like a pancake.
Glen (Texas)
Texans, for the past 20 years and counting, have been in the habit of installing not the brightest of bulbs as the beacon of democracy that is the state's governor. Rick Perry holds the record for the number of years in that office, once only narrowly beating out Kinky Friedman, (Ind), (author, humorist, and leader of an alt-Yiddish-country-rock band, the Texas Jewboys) with a plurality of 38% in a 3-way contest. George W. Bush proved you didn't need smarts to be Governor, or President for that matter, and Perry merely set that reality in cement. Probably why Trump slotted him into the Dept. of ummm, oh, I forget. Shucks. He did don sharp-looking eyeware as governor, which Molly Ivins (a moment of respectful silence here) quickly noted was the smartest thing about Ricky. You get what you (we, the taxpayer, in this case) pay for, even, or especially, when "you" (Trump in this one) don't have to pay for it out of your own pocket. But don't worry about Perry. He is a lifelong politician and dissembles with the best of them. Especially when he wearing his Buddy Holly's.
Barbara (SC)
Good! This is the man who didn't know the energy department existed until he was appointed to run it (into the ground). More importantly, when he becomes a private citizen, he will have little protection from a Congressional subpoena. Sadly, though, he'll just be replaced with another "acting" no-goodnik, probably one who works for a fossil fuel company.
Marge Keller (Midwest)
Are there any Republicans who DIDN'T play a role in the "controversy surrounding Trump’s efforts to push Ukraine officials to investigate the son of a political rival?" What I continue to be amazed at is that these individuals thought it was either okay, appropriate or necessary to be involved in any way with this situation. Again, if Trump's claims of innocence are so stellar, pristine and honorable, why are so many individuals either resigning or coming forward to share information which directly contradicts Trump's assertions? Actions continue to speak louder than words.
The Lone Protestor (Frankfurt, Germany)
Following the pattern (if not the timing) of Volker, now he can testify without a subpoena, or refuse to, claiming the 5th Amendment, thus bargaining for a Get Out Of Jail Free card.
Bob (Portland)
We will be hearing alot about Mr. Perry in the coming months.
NinaMargo (Scottsdale)
Unfortunately Mr. Perry has a knack for forgetting important details...
Trumpty Dumpty (Portland. Oregon)
Time for any honest people serving under trump to get out now. He will throw you under the bus. If you are honest, save yourself. And get a good lawyer. You're probably going to need one. Everything trump touches dies.
J (Philadelphia)
Which former cabinet secretary of Nixon's said to John Dean "When the going gets tough, the though get going"?
markercan (Toronto)
As the EU said to the UK, "So leave already."
brownpelican28 (Angleton, Texas)
If Rick Perry is not complicit in this Ukraine Scandal, then why is he resigning from office. His subpoenaed Materials are due very soon, he decided that his gravy train days of allegedly high rolling as one of the “three Amigos “ are over. His run for the Presidency a few years ago shows one that he has trouble with the number 3.
Fascist Fighter (Texas)
Like the cowardly (and inept) opportunist that he is, Perry labored in the shadows for his master, Trump. Now he tries to scuttle away from the sudden bright light that is shining on him. I nominate Rick Perry as the first member of the Texas A&M Hall of Shame.
VLA (Tucson)
Donald J Trump purges his staff, They work for awhile; then are given the shaft. He claims that he hires the ‘very best’ folk, But keeping them on has become quite a joke. Exit Tillerson, Nielsen, Price, Flynn and Haley, Others to follow - just watch this space daily. Now it’s Rick Perry - will there be more? Trump’s legacy is: a revolving door.
kenneth (nyc)
@VLA Neither rhyme nor reason can explain the frantic mess of this Administration.
Dan88 (Long Island NY)
Too late Rick Perry. You over-stayed on the gravy-train. You kept your snout just too long in the Trump corruption trough. And now you are part of the Ukrainian investigation! Oooops! Hope it was worth it!
magicisnotreal (earth)
@Dan88 He was one of the three amigos who are the Ukraine problem. But yea he should have quit as soon as he knew, back whenever it is he said he was going to leave later this year.
STG (Oregon)
That Perry’s “resignation had been anticipated for several weeks” doesn’t necessarily disconnect this from his role in Ukraine. He was one of the “three amigos,” with Sondland and Giuliani. And aren’t his subpoenaed documents due right about now? Perhaps he’s heading for cover. Perhaps he’s freeing himself up to be honest in the inquiry. I will hope for the latter.
Stephen Hyland (Florida)
@STG three amigos? More like the three stooges - with Rick as Moe.
kenneth (nyc)
@Stephen Hyland The Three Stooges were sometimes funny and entertaining. There is NOTHING funny about these guys.
Ed (Silicon Valley)
Any future political aspirations for Secretary Perry will now be dashed. It's a little too late to save his good name by resigning. He will forever be tied to the scandal of holding back military aid to an ally who is confronting a common enemy. One who has nuclear pointing at us. And Perry didn't want to help them without strings attached. How can anyone win a debate with that on your record.
Bob Bruce Anderson (MA)
@Ed He forgot the name of the agency that he got hired to run that he wanted to dismantle in the first place. Add this bizarro scenario to the hiring of industry hacks to run agencies that they used to sue and you have what should really be called "anarchy". The entire behavior of this administration makes "Dr. Stangelove" feel normal. It makes "Idiocracy" seem brilliant.
ERS (Tucson)
@Bob Bruce Anderson Not only did he forget the name, he was advocating for CUTTING it.
Stephen Hyland (Florida)
@Ed you’re assuming he ever had a good name.
Merlin (Atlanta GA)
Whether or not one believes in climate science and clean energy, it is extremely naive not to believe in the economics of it. Overwhelmingly new research is heading in this new field and not more of fossil fuel production. It's similar to investing in Apple or Google in the 90s. For that reason alone and regardless of climate change denial, the US government should be aggresively promoting clean energy production in America, rather than cede leadership to China, India, and Europe.
Pundette (Tsawwassen)
@Merlin Climate change is not a “belief”. It’s cold, hard science.
kenneth (nyc)
@Merlin Right. And now back to THIS story,....
Barbara (SC)
@Merlin If you or anyone else doesn't "believe in" the cold hard science of climate change, please watch Greta Thunberg's Tedx Talk.
Tribal Elder (Minden, Nevada)
The ship is sinking and Perry doesn't like to get his feet wet. I would hope he agrees to testify before one or more congressional committees and offer his insider perspective on the most corrupt administration north of the border. Those who believe in human behavior impacting climate change can breathe a temporary sigh of relief, at least until the next know- nothing takes over.
G. Dutton (Los Angeles, CA)
Good riddance. Perry's willful refusal to acknowledge the importance of renewable energy sources, and his constant and full throated support for fossil fuels made him singularly unsuited for his post. Furthermore, his public statements ran the gamut from woefully misinformed to headscratchingly nonsensical. While one imagines that his successor might well be no better, I'll be happy to see the door closing behind this dim bulb on his way out . . .
Inigo Montoya (Florin)
A fossil (Perrysaurus) voicing full support for fossil fuels!
dlb (washington, d.c.)
The head of the DOE under President Obama won the Nobel prize in physics. I'm looking forward to the day when people who know what they are doing are running the government again.
Io Lightning (CA)
@dlb This. It is heartbreaking how much damage is being done to our governmental systems, to the country, and frankly to the world. It is breathtaking that any halfway intelligent adult would continue to support this administration. It is incredibly shameful how low Republicans will stoop to game the system for their greed.
Cascadia (Seattle WA)
Given that this department is responsible for the integrity and safety of our nuclear weapons, we'd better hope Trump picks someone competent and not one of his political hacks. While Rick Perry didn't know what the Dept of Energy did until he stepped on board, I understand he turned out to be a good administrator and has a good reputation among staff in that department.
MatthewJohn (Illinois)
@Cascadia You're hoping "Trump picks someone competent and not one of his political hacks"? When has that ever happened?
b fagan (chicago)
@Cascadia -- unfortunately his hiring trends have tended to be a) hire a so-so or useless person who passes loyalty test b) replace with worse person with more loyalty c) replace with yet another "Acting (insert-role-here)"
kenneth (nyc)
@b fagan But "Acting" is Donald's strong suit.
Achilles (Texas)
Rick Perry has helped lead the world to energy independence from Russia with the promotion of U.S.A. LNG, or as he calls it, "Freedom Gas." The benefit to the world due to inexpensive reliable energy is enormous and Rick Perry deserves some of the credit. And it is going to get better for natural gas as new technologies are being proven in La Porte, Texas, producing electricity from gas plant that has zero emissions. Thank you, Rick Perry!
M.S.F. (NYC)
@Achilles How can a gas plant have Zero emission if the very source of its product - gas - has high emissions? Even should your utility ironically have solar panels - emissions are the sum of extraction up to the delivery to the consumer. Think flaring, methane, pollutants pumped into the soil, the gas itself, pipelines. The works. You live there + I suppose you work there. You will have true freedom if you use your free wind, free sun, (yes capturing is not free) - abundant in your state.
b fagan (chicago)
@Achilles -- Germany and Britain now emit less CO2 a year than they did in the mid-1960s. Great Britain produced more electricty from renewable sources than from fossil fuel for all of Q3 this year. And in the United States, the combination of demand management, storage, efficiency and the relentless drop in prices for renewables and storage means that new natural gas plants are facing increasing scrutiny from risk managers at utilities. https://www.utilitydive.com/news/renewables-storage-poised-to-undercut-natural-gas-prices-increase-strande/562674/ In the meantime, the excessive debt the frackers keep piling up is making Wall Street impatient for a return on the money they're sinking into unprofitable holes in the ground. https://www.resilience.org/stories/2019-01-15/fracked-shale-oil-wells-drying-up-faster-than-predicted-wall-street-journal-finds/ So as new drilling techniques actually reduce output per well, investors are getting nervous and SOME people are trying to extend the myth. In the meantime, the sun keeps shining and the wind keeps blowing, as they will for the rest of the habitable future of Earth.
Johnny (Iowa)
@Achilles Can you explain why he deserves any credit? Inexpensive and reliable energy has been around for decades. LNG facility construction and exporting has been around long before Perry.
David Binko (Chelsea)
He has been in the job for 2 years and 8 months. He was not familiar with the agency when he took it over. Now that he has some working knowledge about what he is doing, he quits. Thanks for less than nothing, mostly obfuscation and neglect, Mr. Perry.
RB (TX)
Go anywhere Rick BUT Please don't come back to Texas
b fagan (chicago)
Two things to thank Perry for: 1 - Failing several times to force Americans to subsidize expensive coal power. 2 - Pushing for work on making lithium-ion battery recycling work at scale https://www.energy.gov/articles/energy-department-announces-battery-recycling-prize-and-battery-recycling-rd-center Otherwise, the relentless push to promote fossil fuels was short-sighted and we'd have been better served to continue, like many states are, to pivot away from damaging energy sources.
robertoc (Europe)
"A former Texas governor, Mr. Perry also avoided many of the personal scandals that had bested his counterparts at other agencies." Perry had scandals galore as Texas Ag. Commissioner and Governor-- mostly because of massive workarounds that allowed big chemical/pesticide companies to make him a rich man. In a state where corruption was a nonpartisan affair, Perry was a champ. (Gives me freedom gas just thinking about it).
John (Amherst, MA)
Is Perry "Resigning to spend more time with his family"? We have yet to hear his excuse. It must be hard to think with the sound of investigations following him. At least in Perry's case, when he answers prosecutors' questions with " I don't recall", it will be believable.
G. O. (NM)
"Freedom gas." Is there no noun in front of which a dull-witted (usually Republican) politician can't place the now utterly meaningless word "freedom" in order to create the stench of self-serving and profit?
June (New Jersey)
He's currently negotiating the price of his pardon. (Hint: It's lies, lies, and more lies.)
Wilbray Thiffault (Ottawa. Canada)
The greatest accomplishment of Secretary Perry: he never forgot the name of the Department he was in charge.
Guido Malsh (Cincinnati)
The past, present and future of fossil fuel.
Bob Bruce Anderson (MA)
Another one bites the dust! Another one bites the dust.... Is this better than TV or what? I now feel little need to watch movies or TV. What could be more fantastical, dramatic, bizarre, virtually sci-fi, and horrific than the "Trump Show"? Gosh, I will miss an energy secretary that helps ramp up the release of CO2 into our world as it experiences rapid climate destruction. There is a certain certainty that comes to mind when your government simply says - Hey! Let's just get it over with and enjoy the ride while it lasts (if you are rich enough). In the next episode, Musk and Bezos team up to build 6 large spaceships to take a few hundred mostly vetted and reproductively ready humans into space. Destination unknown. As it becomes more and more apparent that the species is destroying itself and it's habitat, wiser heads prevail and an escape plan is hatched. Let's call it "Escape from Hope"...or "Beezlebub Galatica".
Susan (Paris)
I like to imagine Mr. Perry’s future as “Dancing Behind Bars.”
steve boston area (no shore)
The nation is wearing out the phrase..." Good riddance ". A better phrase would be..." Indictment and prison ".
ItsANewDay (SF)
It seems Rick Perry has been resigning from this post since the beginning of this administration. One must confess, with all due respect, leave already, will ya!
fast/furious (Washington, DC)
Rick Perry Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not pass GO. Do not collect $200.
kay (new hampshire)
The Big Businessman has created a revolving door of people who for one reason or another leave him quickly. A study was done years ago to the effect it costs a company $15,000 every time a good employee leaves and has to be replaced; it's probably more now. So much for the Republican "tax saving party." Hey Republicans, it's your tax money as well as ours that goes down the tube every time there's yet another change. You can't run a business or a government with this game of musical chairs going on constantly, but then, we knew he couldn't run it under any circumstances. This is just ridiculous!
Patrick McGowan (Santa Fe)
There is now a very well-established pattern of Trumpers leaving after short periods of time, too common to not deserve scrutiny. Besides the obvious accounting question of what damage each has done, what wreckage they have triggered, how has each gained in monies, pensions, benefits, tax breaks, furniture, vehicles, priceless connections, continuing streams of income? What do smash and grabbers take with them?
Joseph Ross Mayhew (Timberlea, Nova Scotia)
The phrase "rats leaving a sinking ship" comes to mind.... hopefully more will follow.
J.D. (New Jersey)
I think Freddy Mercury said it best: And another one gone, another one gone, another one bites the dust.
Scott Wetterhall (Mineral Bluff. Georgia)
Will all the “acting” cabinet leaders be eligible to vote if the 25th Amendant is enacted? Or only those who have been confirmed ?
D.A.Oh (Middle America)
I hear Hunter Biden is available. He undoubtedly knows more about energy than Rick Oops Perry.
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
Yep.he sees that he is in deep trouble and he knows that Trump gang will try to blame him. Its obvious that he allowed a donor to get him to try and take over a Gas company in Ukraine so they could take over. Its obvious he is way deep into the quid pro quo impeachment mess. His hope is to cooperate and cut a deal. He is also tied to Guiliani and thats bad company.
Mark In PS (Palm Springs)
Of course he will resign. He will be spending the rest of his waking hours talking to and paying lawyers. It is just another object lesson that when one allies with Trump, they will be the useful idiot/scapegoat.
stu freeman (brooklyn)
Perry had evidently grown sick and tired of having to remember which department he was running. A fitting finale for a man who made his predecessor as the governor of Texas look like one of America's greatest statesmen.
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
@stu freeman They did it with the demented Reagan. They made him a fictious hero and brilliant man. This shows its possible to make Perry into a wise and thoughtful myth. Remember, to be a Repub hero is a very low bar. GW might even qualify when compared to Trump.
cbarber (San Pedro)
If America is looking for "energy dominance" then how come i'm paying over $4.00 a gallon at the pump?
Aaron (Orange County, CA)
@cbarber Because Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom added a 35 cent tax in the last two years .. on top of an existing 18 cent tax .. The Southern California refineries [again] had unexpected downtime, tightening supply and The restricted flow for the Persian Gulf [oil is a global commodity] affected the price of oil.
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
@cbarber Oil and gas is an international market. Its controlled by supply and demand. When Trump blocked Iran oil shipments he raised the price. By the way, this totally wiped out the approximately $300 a year tax cut to middle class.
Dale Irwin (KC Mo)
@cbarber You might also ask why I am paying considerably less than $3.00 a gallon at the pump here in Missouri. I suppose low fuel taxes are a part of it, but I can drive 30 miles into sub-rural Missouri and pay up to fifteen cents a gallon less. Guess I should have paid more attention in that college economics class, though I suspect the answer is to be found in my old notes from political science lectures. Or perhaps from my experience as a room service waiter at the Jefferson City Ramada Inn, where I got a more grounded education in political science.
Kathy Lollock (Santa Rosa, CA)
If I am reading this piece correctly, Mr. Trump will not waste any time in naming a replacement for Mr. Perry...tonight, at a rally, ironically in Texas, Perry's home state. How serendipitous, some would think. Yet, I believe this is but another one of Donald Trump's sycophants to be thrown under that proverbial bus. (Personally, I have lost count.) This soon-to-be former Secretary of Energy was destined to be the perfect fall guy for his boss. I am not sure how many watts are illuminating his brain, for one. And the guy has tunnel vision, the end of that passage being oil and greed. Maybe I am delusional when I write this, but somehow I am nagged by the thought that Giuliani will be the next to "resign" as Mr. Trump's personal lawyer. His fate may just be like that other attorney named Michael Cohen. Let's hope.
GreystoneTX (Austin, TX)
Please make it our Governor or Lt. Governor.
Joe Runciter (Santa Fe, NM)
@Kathy Lollock Rudy will instead take Perry's place as secretary of fossil fuel.
rduggan (Kaneohe, HI)
@Joe Runciter No, Rudy will be in jail.
Mikee (Anderson, CA)
Good riddance! Another terrible appointment bites the dust. Hope his family is glad to have him back home. He represents the country saying: "Don't try to rise above your raisin'
Eraven (NJ)
I always wondered out of the two Texans we have, George W and Rick Perry who is more ignorant. Still debating
stu freeman (brooklyn)
@Eraven Texas has a long and hallowed history of sending its worst politicians to Washington where they end up as America's worst politicians. Can't they just secede from the union so we can all be better off?
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
@Eraven Perry no doubt. GW is just plain intellectually lazy and has no curiousity and likes to think with his "gut". The gut does have some neurons but does not replace the brain.
Richard Head (Mill Valley Ca)
@stu freeman Seems to me they only have worst politicians. Ted Cruz? reading Dr Suess for hours?
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
When I think of Rick Perry (not voluntarily) I remember how the wonderful Molly Ivins referred to him as "Governor Good Hair". Good description - not much else there.
kathleen cairns (San Luis Obispo Ca)
@Pat Boice The Ivins documentary is terrific, if you haven't seen it.
Pat Boice (Idaho Falls, ID)
@kathleen cairns - Thanks! I'll do that!
Platter puss (IL)
Why resign now? Will we have a cabinet left?
Nathan Schneiderman (Kenosha, WI)
“Oops.” Rick Perry 2012
Sendan (Manhattan side)
Trump needs to take Perry’s lead and leave with him.
John M (Minneapolis, Minnesota)
Words I would like to hear from trump: I am resigning by the end of the year.
Jack Lee (Santa Fe)
Words I’d want to hear from Trump: “Could you loosen these handcuffs, please? They’re a bit tight as I try to walk”.
David (Portland)
Get rid of about eight more cabinet members, Trump's lawyers and Trump; then the swamp is pretty well drained.
Chris (NJ)
You are forgetting a particularly powerful turtle and his cronies who are also swamp-dwellers.
Mark In PS (Palm Springs)
@David You have also neglected to mention the scores of lesser vermin in various departments that we have never heard of. Sondland was one until recently.
Ivy (CA)
He will never get a competent cabinet if he keeps trying to recycle people, given that they are all "acting" idiots.
george plant (tucson)
@Ivy - they are not acting, they actually ARE idiots
Greg White (Los Angeles)
I’m starting to feel that maybe this administration isn’t working out so well.
Brian (Michigan)
Too late! Your soul has been infected. You thought that you could turn Trump’s offer to something positive for yourself. Sorry, but now you see the price you have to pay Mr. Faustus, er... Perry.
Two Americas (South Salem)
Another one bites the dust. And another one.......
pb (Portland, Ore.)
Former Governor GoodHair apparently forgot something he might once have believed in when at Texas A&M: “An Aggie does not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do.” For emphasis . . . Or Tolerate Those Who Do.
Christine (AZ)
From Seinfeld: I’m repulsed, yet I can’t turn away.
Susan (Washington, DC)
“Oops”
Dadof2 (NJ)
What did I miss? I thought Perry already announced he was resigning? Did something change?
Gisele Dubson (Boulder)
He’s going sooner than he meant to.
Dadof2 (NJ)
@Gisele Dubson Oh, is that it? Personally, I don't blame him, but he may still be in very, very hot water. He's just not bright enough to avoid obvious legal pitfalls. Another confusion I have is is pundits keep saying now Ben Carson is the last original, as if they never heard of Elaine Chao, both of whom have faced ethical questions (to put it mildly).
Hope (Santa Barbara)
Lock him up! Well...I guess subpoena him, interrogate him, charge him, try him and then lock him up. We have to follow the law, even though none of them have.
Mike Holloway (NJ)
Good news! The first sure sign that the ship is sinking. A few more torpedoes should do it.
Sheila (3103)
Jumping ship before it gets too late. You'll still be getting a subpoena for your role in this misadministration and Ukraine, so don't think you're just going to slink out of town without consequences, one of your party's favorite lines.
ElleninCA (Bay Area)
@Sheila It’s already too late, as your next sentence shows. Damage control is the best he can hope for now.
magicisnotreal (earth)
He figured out he was busted for trying to get his buddies exclusive gas contracts a while ago, he had already scheduled his last day. I think the Mulvaney is pulling the same rip cord. Apparently these mooks think if they are gone before the hammer falls on Trump their crimes will be ignored.
MrsWhit (MN)
True story: his eyeglasses have no lenses.
Greg (Washington DC)
Time to cash in!
Mike Holloway (NJ)
@Greg Time to get out of Dodge.

"Freedom gas"?!--there is no greater freedom than to open your mouth and show the world just how stupid you are.

Did he finally figure out he was in charge of all that "nucular bomb stuff?"
Jane (Clarks Summit)
And another one bites the dust.
NIck (Amsterdam)
I always thought Rick Perry was as dumb as a box of rocks. But, I may have underestimated him. He may actually be smarter than other cabinet members. At least he has the sense to desert a sinking ship.
Ken (St. Louis)
Thanks, Perry. It's about time. (Actually, way past time.) Better luck in your next fiasco.
MsB (Santa Cruz, CA)
@Ken Oil company lobbyist.
John Archer (Ny, NY)
I hope (actually I don’t) this lackey has a good attorney. Should be fund days ahead!
Paul (Ithaca)
As energy secretary, Mr. Perry oversaw an agency whose name he could not remember, but which he knew must be eliminated. He led it with all the skill one would expect from someone whose most sincere comment about the agency was "whoops." Its budget increased 25% under his leadership. By his own strongly stated standards, he has been an abject failure.
Mr Bueno (Forest Hills, NY)
He probably just wants to spend time with family.
WR (Viet Nam)
I heard there's a position open on the board of directors of Ukrainian gas company. Perhaps 50K a month working for oligarchs is better than working for the US government agency Rick Perry swore to get rid of-- while using his position there to conduct personal business abroad. I doubt Rick Perry is leaving the revolving door of government-to-business. He's addicted.
macduff15 (Salem, Oregon)
If more of them resign, maybe it will be easier to invoke the 25th Amendment regarding the President's obvious mental illness.
Paul Raffeld (Austin Texas)
One more down for all the president's thugs. Maybe Perry just couldn't stand the heat.
BSmith (San Francisco)
The Republican rats will be leaving the sinking bloated ship of Donald J. Trump's presidency in the coming weeks. The rate of exit will increase in direct proportion to the number of uncomfortable directions of investigation. This is the beginning of some "end." I hope it is the end of the Trump presidency and not the end of the United States of America. RIck Perry resigned so he can lawyer up and avoid testifying publicly as long as possible. Democrats don't have a clear path to winning the presidency in 2020. The Democratic debates are making all the candidates look stupid and ineffective. How dumb can Democrats get? Maybe Tom Perez needs to be replaced by a media savvy, propagada specialist who could help the Democrats develop a coherent message. I think Hakeem Jeffries is worth a closer look. What about some great young talent like Katie Porter? She's feisty and appealing, and really brilliant. Any one but the old dotards running - like Joe. Liz Warren looks 20 years younger than her 70 years so maybe she's an exceptiob, Kamala Harris flirts too much on TV. Americans don't want a giggling flirt to make critical decisions in the Oval Office... I really like Katie Porter, but Demo support her. Katie is divorced, the mother of three small children, and poor - barely getting by with her House salary. Katie needs three shifts of nannies to be president...
Sarah Conner (Seattle)
Perry and his promotion of oil and gas that will CAUSE THE EXTINCTION OF ALL LIFE ON EARTH is a disgrace to humankind. Woe that he can just resign.

George & Veronica B (Waxahachie, TX formerly from NY)
@David DiRoma Ben who?
Lisa (Port St. Lucie)
@Ann Marie Don't forget about Betsey DeVos... uber-billionaire, education sec'y. She really needs to go too.

Department of Energy's loss is Arthur Murray's gain
Teacher (Washington state)
Maybe he decided his “energy” needs to be “lawyering up” for misdeeds he as part of this administration has done. Few left in the Executive Branch that will not have that concern.
Frank O (texas)
I agree with Mr. Perry that exports of liquified natural gas would reduce Russian leverage over the nations of eastern and even central Europe. However, it should be remembered that, while Governor of Texas, he was the Godfather of the "pay-to-play" theory of governance.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Deepwater Horizon, the BEST oil spill ever. I’m sure one of those guys could replace Rick. What could go wrong ???
Linda (Kew Gardens)
He has 4 reasons for resigning, but only can remember 2!
Bert Floryanzia (Sanford, NC)
@Linda Oops!
Joseph A Losi (Seattle, Wa)
This "House of Cards" is truly beginning to fall. How can the pusillanimous Repub's continue to defend this toxic swamp?
David Macauley (Philadelphia)
Maybe the best way to get rid of Trump is for everyone in the Administration to resign en masse. It's been happening since Day 1. Let's just speed up this inexorable process. No one with a brain or a heart wants to work for the corrupt narcissist, especially before he throws them under the bus, which is inevitable. Trump can have a cabinet, but it will just be furniture rather than people who advise. Until finally, hopefully, and at last, Melania herself resigns from their marriage and Donald is left utterly alone . . . or at least just left crying in the Oval Office with a very rude and unruly Rudy.
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
Jump..jump ..abandon the sinking WH.
Paul (Chicago)
Goodbye Please close the door on the way out Don’t look back
Logan (Ohio)
I've said it before, we're watching an ever-quickening game of Jenga. Trump's Jenga Tower is reaching a point of criticality. One more block has been removed. Mulvaney earlier in the day. McConnell (at least briefly) called for stronger sanctions against Turkey. Trump Tower will soon collapse. 666.
Margo Channing (NY)
He's still in this position? Who knew? What has he accomplished?
Blue Skies (Colorado)
Considering the fact the Perry's office at DOE had cobwebs in it pretty much indicates his resignation won't make much difference and that's a good thing.
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
The nation would be grateful if Perry resigned today. Anything else is just prolonging his ignominy and our agony. Rick always was an empty vessel.
Judy Johnson (Cambridge, MA)
They're dropping like flies.
Pam (Skan)
@Judy Johnson So harsh for flies. Spare a thought for those germ-spreading, maggot-breeding, carrion-feasting insects. At least they're doing what they're supposed to.
LarryAt27N (North Florida)
"...he would resign...." "Would" is usually conditional, typically followed by an "if". Why don't we read, "He will resign"? The former is maybe-ish and the latter is definite.
Jim Muncy (Florida)
America may have had more corrupt Cabinets in the past, but it hasn't had a more incompetent one. I've never seen such a ship of fools. It's astounding that America still stands. We must do better, much better. We couldn't do worse. It's shocking and dismaying what bad shape our government is in. You really can't look directly at it, like a fresh, serious wound. Diversions are lifesavers.
Ken Edelstein (Atlanta)
@Jim Muncy "America may have had more corrupt Cabinets in the past, but it hasn't had a more incompetent one." I highly doubt the US has ever had a Cabinet as corrupt as this one.
Jim Muncy (Florida)
@Ken Edelstein Richard Nixon's Cabinet called: They insist they are still #1.
Jackie (Missouri)
@Ken Edelstein Certainly not in my lifetime, and I've been around since the Eisenhower Administration.
Hla3452 (Tulsa)
What's the other? Oops. Too late.!
Bladefan (Flyover Country)
Will anyone notice?
Kathryn (NY, NY)
...And another one gone And another one gone Another one bites the dust, yeah... (Apologies to Queen) Oops. The ships are deserting the rat. Eric Swalwell said tonight that his two brothers who are cops say, “We don’t catch the really smart ones.” Well, at least now Rick will have plenty of time to work on his dance moves. Lord help us.
ElleninCA (Bay Area)
@Kathryn Fortunately there are few really smart ones in Trump’s entourage. Bill Barr is a scary exception.
J J Davies (San Ramon California)
Trump's genius in adapting Andy Warhol's dictation is all making sense now. "Everyone will be a secretary for fifteen minutes." I can't wait for my turn.
Brad (Oregon)
Well he’s already been on dancing with the stars
MissEllie (Baja Arizona)
Another one bites the dust.
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
@MissEllie Tres amigos...then there was dos.
Adam (Brooklyn)
"Mr. Perry also avoided many of the personal scandals that had bested his counterparts at other agencies." Except for taking orders from the President's personal lawyer whose conspiracy theories then guided a shadow foreign policy that is now getting the President impeached...
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Freedoms just another word for nothing left to LOOT. Seriously.
Keith Dow (Folsom Ca)
Rick Perry is the smartest person in the room. This must be an episode of "The Twilight Zone."
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
@Keith Dow Yes. “ The Idiot “ by Dostoevsky.
independent thinker (ny)
I thought Rick Perry resigned 2 weeks ago. This is just an effort to distract from other news... Mulvaney's 'sure we are guilty' speech Today's House sessions Recent tax findings indicating Tax &/or bank fraud throughout the Trump family...
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Another one bites the OOPS ! Dance, Rick, Dance.
Kathryn (NY, NY)
@Phyliss Dalmatian - you made me LOL with this one.
R.S. (New York City)
I am scared of who might be next. While Rick Perry was an awful Energy Secretary, at least he had been a Governor! Trump’s nominee will undoubtedly be someone with even less knowledge of energy policy, and even more contempt for climate science.
Daniel Mozes (NYC)
"As energy secretary, Mr. Perry oversaw a sharp increase in the production of fossil fuels, particularly liquefied natural gas, and promoted it with a patriotic fervor — even dubbing the fossil fuel “freedom gas”." Nothing matters about this but the policies, not even the destruction of the American experiment in democracy that Perry aided and abetted. All that matters is the lost chance to deal with global warming.
Gwe (Ny)
Yes, I can see why he is resigning and I do not blame the poor man. He is not going to have enough time to do his job with all that he has coming up. After all, it is very time consuming to be consulting with one's lawyers when expecting to be indicted. I wish him well.
Amy D (NC)
Yeah, I have a feeling that resigning was an attempt to keep him out of jail. I hope it is too late for.... well, all of them.
Fred (Chapel Hill, NC)
My favorite Rick Perry moment came after a mass shooting at a movie theater in Louisiana, when Perry opined that similar incidents would not occur if law-abiding customers were allowed to carry guns in theaters. This from a member of the party of Lincoln.
Joe Runciter (Santa Fe, NM)
So which oil company is he going to work for now?
stan continople (brooklyn)
Years ago there was a horrible ferry accident, I believe in Taiwan. Hundreds of people died when the ship capsized. Why did it capsize? Because a fistfight broke out on deck and everyone rushed to that side of the ship to watch. I hope when all of Trump's rats decide to jump ship, for their own safety, they know to distribute themselves evenly among all the exits.
Eleanor (Aquitaine)
@stan continople Good analogy, but I don't think the administration officials are rushing to see Trump's brawl with Schiff and Pelosi. Like seasoned sailors they are prudently debarking from the nearest exit.
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
No. The fleas are deserting the sinking RAT. Seriously.
Sean Berry (Braselton, Ga)
Can't help but think the DC circus will continue another term. Democrats need a candidate to shares their sensibilities. Warren ain't it.....Biden definitely not it. I gotta learn to drink......
Bob Hillier (Honolulu)
@Sean Berry Please support whoever gets the nomination. Any adult will be an improvement.
Jackie (Missouri)
@Bob Hillier My dog would be an improvement. She's sweet, smart, likes people, fairly obedient, is potty-trained, good with cats, and she would never deliberately hurt anyone or put children in cages. Vote for Sandy in 2020!
ElleninCA (Bay Area)
@Sean Berry In my view, any one of the Democratic candidates would be a vast improvement over Trump.
Jules (California)
Oh goody we get another "Acting" something or other.
Rob Vukovic (California)
HUD Secretary Ben Carson wanted to leave with Rick Perry but he still hasn't found his luggage. Update on Perry: Secretary Perry offered up a heartfelt "oops" when confronted with the Ukraine story. He further added that he'll clear out his office as soon as he remembers which department he heads.
Joseph Santini (Berkeley, California)
Another crook, hits the road! How many more are to come and how quickly?
Phyliss Dalmatian (Wichita, Kansas)
Good old Rick, the best of the worst people. Bless his heart.
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
@Phyliss Dalmatian Tricky Ricky jumps the sinking ship.
Didier (Charleston. WV)
Dancing Behind Bars. Trump's next reality show starring Rick Perry.
Sambam (California)
Rick Perry May be as dumb as a rock, but even he is smart enough to know when to desert a sinking administration. Good riddance to another ignorant, corrupt Trump today. I hope his next stop is a jail cell.
Daniel Recoder (Yew York, NY)
Glad he has his dancing career to fall back on! Hope he still has his tap shoes. Back to Dancing with the Stars!
Andrew (Louisville)
Rumor is that he's headed for Commerce or Education now that he's done with Energy.
Werephahckt (Elizabeth Nj)
Needs time to work on his legal defense before the indictments are handed out. No doubt Europe is lining up to buy the “Freedom Gas” from the country that threatens to tariff them and disparages NATO, and could care less about turning ISIS terrorist loose on their continent.
Jennifer (California)
Freedom gas?? Freedom gas?!?! That sounds like the plot of a South Park episode, not a serious U.S. government policy initiative.
Robbie G (Bethesda)
I am wonderful if there is something more to Giuliani’s pals Fruman and Parnas than meets the eye. They supposedly were pursuing a deal to sell American LNG to Ukraine to be transported through Poland. Who else was in on this deal?
Adrian Bennett (Mississippi)
@Robbie G Always watch the money trail....bet it leads to Dmytro Firtash, the Ukrainian “businessman” with strong links to Putin , Firtash is currently under house arrest in Vienna, fighting extradition to the US....watch this Firtash space.
Mark (NYC)
As soon as he resigns subpoena him and make him talk!
JB (New York NY)
OK, he decided to resign ( a bit too late?), but does he remember what department he's resigning from? I bet he knows exactly what private Oil & Gas business he'll be joining, though.
KittyC (Madison, WI)
Am glad he has decided to distance himself from Trump and resign.
proudtexan (Texas)
@KittyC Hope he has someone to tell him which way to run.
judgeroybean (ohio)
Warren G Harding, the standard bearer for presidential corruption has just been pushed into second place...by a mile...by Trump, Mulvaney, Pompeo, Pence, Barr, Perry, Sondland and Hades knows who else in this administration of gangsters. Impeachment is just the beginning of the process, not the end.
Matt Andersson (Chicago)
Good riddance. He has a mental age in adulthood of between 7 and 10 on the Binet scale.
Linda (New Jersey)
@Matt Andersson Perry isn't unintelligent. He didn't get to where he is by being stupid. Amoral and selfish, yes; unintelligent, no.
larry bennett (Cooperstown, NY)
The sinking ship analogy has been overdone. Ships sink much more faster than this. This more like a huge schooner at sea, the lines sheered and the sails flapping, the helm untended, the compass broken, and no one in charge that can read a chart or plot a course. The officers all have their heads down because Captain Trumpblower refuses to take advice from anyone and has already made dozens walk the plank. Ahead lie shallow reefs, coral heads, howling winds, confused currents, tropical storms, and the warships of a half dozen enemies. The end will be a unmitigated disaster, but it's unclear what kind. As the lifeboats are prepared to be lowered it's also uncertain how many will die for–or with–the captain.
Greg Wessel (Seattle, WA)
@larry bennett Aye aye.
spencer (new york)
What the press/media needs to do is write about how smart Pence is, how he can deal with Turkey better than Trump can, is a better negotiator, etc. and then watch the sparks fly. Then write about how smart Pompeo is. Etc.
Hope (Santa Barbara)
@spencer Please...it's too early in the morning to make me this nauseous. Pence has the intelligence of a shoehorn and he is as dangerous as Trump, especially his views on women. Birds of a feather....
jhanzel (Glenview)
wow ... even Perry is bailing out. At least he'll know in 6 months what he can commit to do in 6 months and one wrrk. It is interesting that Texas has one of the largest sustainable energy systems in the country. Maybe Trump just found that out?
DAL (New York NY)
Politico reported that Perry planned to take a job in the private sector, also known as the energy business. This after he worked hard at salting the board of that Ukrainian gas company with big time Republican business guys, also known as Trump donors. Hard to imagine that Perry wasn’t licking his chops at the thought of raking in megabucks in the Ukraine gas rush Too bad the scandal hit the fan when it did. He may have to work for a living now.
Lilly (New Hampshire)
If he was directly or indirectly involved or facilitated unethical and illegal behavior, he shouldn’t just get to leave for a comfortable, blameless, private life.
GCAustin (Texas)
I'm reading comments on Perry's resignation in the here and they're absolutely on spot and hilarious! Especially the comments from Texans. Sidebar... Trump is hitting up big donors in Dallas tonight. They’re not all happy he’s running anymore.
David J (NJ)
Let’s change the name of the Department of Energy, back to its original name: The Atomic Energy Commission. Just so the next secretary doesn’t think, “0h, oil and coal, I can deal with that.”
H (Planet earth)
Just breaks my heart...
Liz (Redmond, WA)
Good. Then the House can subpoena him.
mhood8 (Indiana)
Oh please - let him become the new chief of staff to Trump. It's hard to imagining that could sink the ship any faster...
CritterDoc (Dallas, TX)
"Let no one be mistaken Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised, and discarded. It cannot be pacified or ignored for it will destroy a set of principles that has lifted more people out of poverty than any force in the history of the civilized world and that is the cause of conservatism." ~Rick Perry, 2015 Funny how things turn out Rick.
Sarah (Niagara Falls, NY)
@CritterDoc Sounds to me like he got Rickrolled.
Nora (New England)
I guess inadvertently trump is draining the swamp. All that work with him either resign or go to jail.
mmk (Silver City, NM)
Freedom Gas? Is that a euphemism for the foul odor given off by the Trump administration and the Great Man himself?
Nina (H)
Resign and go to jail.
Dr. Girls (Midwest)
Can we fast forward to 2020 when Irrational Rudy turns on Putin Don? That will be quite a tell all.
B. Honest (Puyallup WA)
"All in all he's just another Brick in The Wall!" The one Mexico is not paying for and Trump diverted money from the Military to rebuild sections of said Wall. Mr Perry is a Big Wall Proponent and as such is just another brickhead in the way of anything REAL getting done. Jump off the careening buss before you get thrown under it for traction, sounds like rat leaving a ship is too mild as there are some things that Rats Just Wont Do! But Mr Perry had no problem with such.
Citizen (RI)
Another one bites the dust. It seems the glasses may make you *look* "smart," but clearly we can't judge your book by its cover, eh Ricky boy? Tell me, did you ever figure out what the Secretary of Energy does?
Louis J. Alessandria (CA)
Wow! First Rick Perry couldn’t remember the Department of Energy now, I bet he wishes he could forget it!! Lol!!!!
Black Crow (Stamford, CT)
Too little, too late. Perry is complicit in lying and cheating the American public. He is just another disgraceful sycophant.
Heysus (Mt. Vernon)
Got a hot job lined up as a lobbyist does he? Rats racing for the ship rails before the impeachment. What spineless amoeba.
elzocalo (San Diego)
hasta la vista ...... please take a few colleagues with you when you leave
JW (New York)
Don't let the door hit you on the way out!
harrison (boston)
@JW Yes, it is a fast moving revolving door.
Baba (Ganoush)
"Freedom just around the corner for you But with the truth so far off, what good will it do?" -- Jokerman Bob Dylan
GCAustin (Texas)
Texans still haven’t investigated how Perry made millions as a Texas public employee on nothing greater than an annual salary of $84K. Maybe he’s a great saver? We kinda know he did well with his “real estate investments“ wink, wink. No one has ever really dug into it.
Sandra Garratt (Palm Springs, California)
@GCAustin ...something Beto should pursue.....expose the corruption in Texas.
Jey Es (COL)
After he's been caught, Perry still has the nerve to say he would resign? Nah, too late for that. He should instead get indicted and then striped of his ill gained job and title.
Inigo Montoya (Florin)
Secretary Perry, Please remember to turn out the lights when you leave. It is the LEAST you could do.
James (St. Paul, MN.)
As Perry is profoundly ignorant about the role he holds, it is best he resign. However, this should not reduce any criminal liability he has for being part of the Trump Grifter Gang.
James Jones (Syracuse, New York)
Perry is a key figure in the Ukraine shakedown tolling President Zelinsky in Poland that aid was conditioned on investigating the Bidens and the crazy conspiracy theory that the hacking of Democrats in 2016 was done in Ukraine and NOT Russia. This, together with Mulvaney's admission that aid was put on hold until Zelinsky agreed to the above is powerful evidence in a criminal trial for extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion.
Vic (Boston)
Good riddance to the man who could not name the 4 departments he would cut if he were elected president ...
Janet (Chicago)
@Vic One of which was the one he now runs.
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
About time. This fool has no knowledge about energy. He is owned by coal and fracking oligarchs, who seek to destroy the environment for their own personal, short term, gain. Rick himself has an incredibly torpid acumen, of no residual half-life.
Jim (Palos Heights, ill.)
Frankly he has no business being appointed Secretary of Energy. He has a degree in animal science. That is not a qualification for the job. Obama's Secretary has a doctorate in physics from Stanford, and has a connection to M.I.T. Doesn't this administration ever tire of its cynicism moves. Another one of Trump's "only the best" in service to the nation. Mullarkey. Speculating...who knows...maybe got tired of what he sees or is protecting himself. Yet more turnover in the administration "in service to America."
Ohio MD (Westlake, OH)
@Jim Perry's degree in animal science qualifies him for Secretary of Energy because cows produce large quantities of intestinal methane , which is the primary component of natural gas. Trump understood this.
Jim (Palos Heights, ill.)
@Ohio MD You're right. I forgot Trump had said "Nobody knows more about intestinal methane than I do."
Llewis (N Cal)
There goes our Mooclear Physics expert. His degree in Bulltonium has server Trump well.
Douglas (Alaska)
The rats can't leave this sinking ship of fools fast enough. Soon there will be no one left but the "chosen one" and his vampire mini-me, Stephen Miller.
Robert J. Wlkinson (Charlotte, NC)
@Douglas I just LOVE the fact that Trump's trusted thugs are fleeing the White House, one by one... Thrilling!
jeanne maiden (pa)
@Douglas That's exactly what Stephen Miller is, a vampire. And I thought Dick Cheney was evil.
MIMA (heartsny)
Guess that bachelor’s degree in animal science didn’t really pay off for Rick Perry after all, did it? When the kitchen’s getting hot, time to get out. Whoosh - there goes Perry!
Gary Cascio (Santa Fe, New Mexico)
No takebacks, Perry. You're a part of this scandal-ridden administration and resigning won't save you from prosecution.
RickyDick (Montreal)
Good riddance to bad garbage. Unfortunately the replacement will likely be worse.
Aristotle (SOCAL)
In truth he said "I will resign as secretary of … uh, uh, ooops, I forgot."
Moxie (Vermont)
It used to be that rats left the sinking ship. Now, they seek immunity and presidential pardons. They're still rats.
KennethWmM (Paris)
It can't be soon enough. Yet another Trumpster acolyte sniffing around the trough and trying to secure financial gain in Ukraine.
Armo (San Francisco)
Hey Rick, resigning doesn't exonerate you.
Bradley Bleck (Spokane, WA)
Perry went from being a merely unqualified minion of Trump to yet another tarnished chump of Trump.
William O, Beeman (San José, CA)
Perry is a dim bulb who did nothing as energy secretary, except to get caught in Trump's criminal web. Now he can't get out soon enough. It is probably the only smart thing he has done in decades.
ElleninCA (Bay Area)
@William O, Beeman If only Perry had done nothing. According to the story we’re commenting on, he heavily promoted fossil fuels.
William Perrigo (Germany (U.S. Citizen))
@ElleninCA Norway (the good) sells 2% of the world’s oil to others and Perry (the bad) sells it too. Good to know!
BMD (USA)
Good riddance! The man took over DOE and didn't know that the DOE's main job was overseeing our nuclear arsenal.
Christy (Springboro, Ohio)
Perhaps he is hoping for the Ambassador to Ukraine post.
JLD (California)
So which unqualified sycophant will be enlisted to replace him?
Frank Heneghan (Madison, WI)
I recall when Texas Gov. Perry was in a dispute with the Obama administration he threatened secession from the Union rather than work towards a compromise. That kind of don't mess with Texas thinking has no place in the cabinet.
Sharon (Los Angeles)
@Frank Heneghan to even call it “thinking” is generous on your part. This admin wouldn't recognize thinking if it bit them.....they are just vindictive and hypocritical.
Claire Green (McLean VA)
@Frank Heneghan: on the contrary, this is the worm- ridden cabinet such thinking should be in. Trump has completely forgotten that there are three branches if government, and Perry never understood there was a Federal government. No wonder whole states have no understanding about the fragile but beautiful thing the United States of America represented in the world. We are no longer the virtue- seeking people who fought for the opportunity for a virtuous land, waged a war against slavery, fought two world wars against genocidal tyranny, and took our defeat in Viet Nam like men and women who understood reality. We are money grubbing narcissistic fantasists.
woofer (Seattle)
Rick Perry has learned a lot as energy secretary including, as noted, that an energy department exists. When you start at zero, even a little progress looks pretty good. Plus he clearly arrived at the job with no prior agenda about how the department should be run. Unlike many other department heads who came to their jobs after careers as lobbyists for the industries to be regulated, Perry seems to have had no pre-existing list of resources to be looted or deregulated. Only in a Trump administration can a complete ignoramus rise to the top echelon. Only in a Trump administration can being an ignoramus be deemed a positive virtue. Two cheers for Rick Perry.
Thomas (Pittsburgh)
I honestly believe Me. Trump did not run for president to lead America. He believed that the President does not have to abide by the law.
sandman338 (97501)
@Thomas I also believe Trump did not run for president to lead America, rather to loot America
Lawrence (Washington D.C,)
If he's not in govt service, trump can't stop him from testifying. All of these guys will cooperate, as it is in their best interest, and best way to avoid time. All roads lead to trump and Putin.
Dave (Portland Oregon)
Perhaps he will attempt to protect himself by cooperating with both the House impeachment investigations and subsequent prosecutors.
X (Wild West)
25% budget EXPANSION of an agency he (tried to) vow he'd eliminate of elected president. Naturally. He's part of the GOP.
Mamma's child (New Jersey)
@X Party of fiscal (ir) responsibility.
L. Hoberman (Boston)
He resigned from doing nothing? The guy doesn’t even know his department exists, let alone its responsibilities. The guy is more clueless than George W Bush, and that’s saying something. But that eminently qualifies him to work in the Trump administration, where they know nothing about their jobs except how to exploit their privilege like they are royalty.
Yoandel (Boston)
Now he can participate unimpeded by spurious arguments —hope he speaks up. Clearly this is the case of escaping off a sinking ship and avoiding a possible criminal indictment Even Mulvaney is in it now.
Seabiscute (MA)
I shouldn't be sorry to see him go, but what are the chances that he'll be replaced with some grifter who doesn't know how to keep out of trouble, and who will pursue the same planet-destroying policies?
Missy (Texas)
Trump used Rick Perry and Pete Sessions. He's using them just like he's using all his other minions right now. There are a lot of people in the cabinet and congress that are about to lose their respect and possibly go to jail just because Trump used them. Rick Perry , I would sing like a canary and sing loudly.
Kwith Engo (Mojave Desert, Ca.)
Let's all remember the names of trump's enablers and cheerleaders. Some of them aren't going away as soon as we would like. Rick Perry expanded an energy department by doubling down on the very products mankind desperately needs to break away from. He's not stupid, but shows his weakness by his actions and loyalty to an inferior leader. We can become superheroes for our descendants by having the nerve to make the changes needed for our planet.
cbindc (dc)
Perry is a genuine as clean coal.
Paul McGlasson (Athens, GA)
There will never be another nuclear scientist his equal in the Energy Department. Never.
SunInEyes (Oceania)
Yay! Soon we'll have yet another "acting" agency head. Do these people get SAG benefits??
Yankelnevich (Denver)
What a legacy. Trump's Energy Secretary assigned the task of building fossil fuel production as the world hurtles into a world historical climate crisis caused by fossil fuel use. He promoted the world's destruction and apparently assisted Trump in his Ukraine treachery. Will history be kind to Rick Perry? Not more so than your average Confederate general.
Baba (Ganoush)
Last one in the lifeboat has to look after Pence !

There are ( Short Term) Positions open in the Trump Administration... anybody want to apply ?
Troy (Virginia Beach)
First time someone said they resigned to “spend more time around their attorneys.”
Stan Frymann (Laguna Beach, CA)
Somewhere in the corrupt morass of political appointees there is going to be someone who decides to actually be honest. Possibly because of conscience. Possibly because they don't want to be left holding the bag. Possibly because damning documentary evidence comes out. I want to believe this.
Greg (Washington DC)
Nope... time to cash in! Lots of consulting jobs out there!
Dennis Sopczynski (San Mateo, California)
Another one bites the dust.
Tam (San Francisco)
The rats are jumping ship, one by one.

@Tam You beat me to it, now not only are the rats running, the other pirates are too!

. . . but who's counting . . . ?
Kelly Ann Conjob (Bowling Green Mass.)
Trump installed this grovelling dimwit to replace Moniz : "Moniz is one of the founding members of The Cyprus Institute and has served at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, as the Director of the Energy Initiative, and as the Director of the Laboratory for Energy and the Environment.[4] wiki. Elect a malignant narcissist expect unqualigied toadies, lap dogs, boot lickers and turn over.
johnny ro (white mountains)
@Kelly Ann Conjob The scary thing is, Perry appears to be one of the better Trump politician picks. He is not known for openly stealing money.
BSR (Bronx)
Just figured out what Trump will say soon. “I have to resign since everyone is a coward and abandoning their posts!”
Rob Prushan (Los Angeles)
We should be so lucky.
Dr. Pangloss (Xanadu)
Come back for next season of "Dancing with the Felons". That will be one FULL dance card!
Harold (Bellevue WA)
Barr's next? And Pompeo behind Barr's? (or is it "bars")
Eleanor (Aquitaine)
@Harold I so hope you're right about Barr. William Barr really is Trump's Roy Cohn. And Roy Cohn was not a decent or honorable man.
ElleninCA (Bay Area)
@Harold I doubt Barr will leave. Even though he obviously knew what Trump is made of, he worked hard to get the job. Why, I don’t understand.
TeddyV (Washington)
Barr behind Bars. Trademark that for me, I need a tshirt.
Technic Ally (Toronto)
I hope they all serve time.

Hate to see another well-qualified Put-America-First cabinet member leave the Trump administration.
Anonymous Bosch (Houston, TX)
If I may be permitted to borrow a phrase... "Oops."
Ted (Vancouver)
we all saw this one coming, right?
Oregon Guitarist (Oregon)
Three comments and no one has said "But Hillary" yet.
Eleanor (Aquitaine)
@Oregon Guitarist No, the Republicans have gone quiet on Hillary. I suspect it's because the contrast between the fake scandals they invented about her and the real scandals the ol' Stable Genius would be too glaringly obvious.
bro (houston)
I expect Trump to nominate the Energizer Bunny.
Linda (New Jersey)
@bro Great image! Betsy DeVos could be replaced by Ronald McDonald, Mike Pence by Lassie, and Ben Carson by the Pillsbury Doughboy, or maybe Dopey. Eddie Haskell from "Leave It to Beaver" could be Steven What's His Name, or would the Wicked Queen in "Snow White" be better for him? McConnell could be the Wicked Witch of the West. Barr could be the Cowardly Lion. The Mad Hatter could take over for Trump. For sure Snow White won't be a player. I think I'm losing it. It's all getting to be too much for me.
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
Perry has been loyal, I expect him to come back to a higher profiled job.

Paul McGlasson (Athens, GA)

@Paul McGlasson Not quite. There are still plenty to go.
SteveH (Zionsville PA)
Attention Mr. Secretary, please see Mr. Schiff for your exit interview. Thank you.
Pat (Somewhere)
@SteveH Assuming he can remember the name of the agency he worked for.
Paul McGlasson (Athens, GA)
Mr. Perry will be missed. Indeed, I think he was missing most of his time in office.
A. Stanton (Dallas, TX)
Let’s just hope that the last people to leave the White House and the government will remember to shut the windows and lock the doors.
Lawrence (Washington D.C,)
@A. Stanton You are assuming that there will be anything of value not taken.
Baruch (Bend OR)
@A. Stanton No, let's hope that this corrupt cabal all ends up in prison and WE end up with a functional government based on integrity, for a change.
Mike (Rochester, NY)
Oil company cash beckons, and Perry is ready to respond.
Heysus (Mt. Vernon)
@Mike you bet. He has a hot job lined up.
Joe Miksis (San Francisco)
@Mike I worked for Major Oil for 37 years, in mid and upper management. I guarantee that no one in my old company would hire this political hayseed. He is an aberration, without acumen.
JHM (New Jersey)
One is tempted to say "good riddance." However, what we've learned from past sackings of cabinet ministers by Trump is that the person who comes in to replace someone we believed couldn't be any worse, actually is.
Billyboy (Virginia)
@JHM I hadn’t thought that possible, but it’s true. Let’s just pray Betsy Boop DeVos doesn’t resign
Ted (Vancouver)
@JHM good riddance if you prefer Pompeo over Tillerson and Bill Barr over Sessions. If you are reading this article thinking, 'thank goodness, the Dept. of Energy is going to get back to fulfilling it's essential responsibilities' you are in for quite a surprise.
JHM (New Jersey)
@Ted Which was my point exactly!

@Kathleen Seems pretty likely.
