The sound of rustling plastic came in front of me. I looked up from my phone to see a man who looked straight out of a chemical apocalypse. He was clad in a thin plastic covering, I realized, and a gas mask covering his face. “Excuse me”, he said. “Oh” I realized that, in my shock and potential horror of seeing this man out on the street, I hadn’t moved and had, embarrassingly, been staring. “Sorry,” I mumbled. I looked down to see that held in both hands, bug poison. Of course, he was just an exterminator. I hurried away, chuckling to myself how fast I had panicked at the sight of a man off to his job.
This photo reminds me the outbreak of Covid all around the world. Everyone was wearing a mask to prevent from getting infect. During the period of the pandemic, citizens went to convenient stores or drug stores to buy lots of boxes of masks. Therefore, many people has the problem of the lack of masks. At that time, they would put on other objects which can cover their face to replace masks, such as a helmet, a scarf, even a hazmat suit. In the picture, I guess the person who were the hazmat suit was under the similar circumstance. It is not easy to let other people not to notice the bizarre outfit.

My 4th grade class saw a man covered from head to toe, wearing a mask. Some people thought he was cleaning the streets, painting the streets, or detecting metal. Some people wondered if this took place in the middle of a war or after war. Some people wondered if the person holding the children's hands were family members.
Whats going on in this picture? Someone is social distancing and wearing everything they can not to get covid-19. That makes me say that because covid started in 2019 and people tried everything they could to not get it. I can find that people look super worried maybe because they don't know what what kind of virus it is and what it does.

I noticed a man walking in a hazmat suit drawing attention from other people not wearing a suit. I noticed how the image is black and white and the cars look older, so it could be a type of disease going around. Personally, I think this image represents how peoples opinions can differ drastically. If there is a disease going around in the image it's obvious one person cares more than others. In the end I think this represents how peoples opinions even when faced with something deadly can still surprise others.

2.) They don't think it's COVID because of the age of the cars, but many students think the person is dressed in that suit because they are disinfecting places in a city because of a disease

After analyzing this picture, I thought that it was taken during the 1900s based on the attire of the lady and children walking across the lane, and also because of the old-looking vehicles and buildings on the background. However, I can see a one-person wearing a hazmat suit which is known to be used against hazardous chemicals and the rest are wearing casual attire. Therefore, I think that the person with the hazmat suit depicts a person who is trying to protect himself against a certain kind of chemicals or radiation mixing up in the air. Also, the person with the hazmat suit has some kind of device on his hand which I thought to be a chemical/radiation detector and he is pointing it a few steps in front of him I think for him to assure that it's safe whichever way he goes. While those people who are wearing casual attire may not seem aware of what is going on or maybe curious about the weird attire of the person with the suit of because I can see that they were all looking at him as they cross the lane. On the other hand, I also thought that the person with the hazmat suit is just doing some kind of public awareness to everyone in case of unexpected events such as hazardous chemicals and/or radiation leakage. Lastly, I also thought that may the man with hazmat suit was retired personnel responding to toxic spills and due to his job experiences, he became paranoid or crazy. He probably thought that wherever he goes there are chemicals that will put his health in danger.
Based on what I see through this picture, I see a man in a Hazmat suit walking down the streets alongside a lady and a man with his 2 children. The setting looks to be in a city in the 1900s based on the buildings, amount of cars in the area, and the people’s clothing attire. A thought I have on why the man is wearing the hazmat suit is because he is more aware of what is happening in the States or the world in general because he is the only one in the suit at the time of this picture. Also, he has along with him a metal box which seems to connected to a device which looks to be some type of detection device. It looks as if he is detecting some type of disease or something as he walks down the street. While the other people are not as aware because of how they are looking at him and the attire they are in. They seem to be going on about there day.

The second thing this picture could show is a person or worker using this detector to possibly find some sort of metal or something. He’s could be wearing the protective gear for safety because it may or may not be close by some radiation or disease or some other hazard.
Based on this picture, I couldn’t take an educated guess and say that this picture was taken a few decades ago. There are five people walking on the crosswalk. There’s a father with his two daughters, a woman, and a person with a hazmat suit. It seems as if the person in the hazmat suit was aware of some disease or chemical in the air and did not want to be contracted by it. The reason i believe that this photo was taken during the 20th century, is because of the automobiles and the attire that the people wore. In my analysis of this photo. I think that this picture may have been taken before the 21st century. I say this because it is in black and white, the vehicles seem to be older models and the way people are dressed are in a different time period than the way those in the 2000's dress. Depicted in this picture is a person crossing the street passing by others wearing a mask and a zipped up hazmat suit. In this person's hands is a box with no markings connected to a metal rod by a spiral cable. This could be to depict a tool that would detect radiation. With this information, I am made to believe that there is nothing dangerous in the immediate area that would require a hazmat suit to be worn. As there are other pedestrians walking pass just fine. I believe that this person in the mask and hazmat suit may be doing a demonstration to raise awareness and bring attention to something that may involve radiation.

If the government did send someone because there was a global pandemic or chemical warfare occurring at that time then I don't believe that it would have been safe for people to be driving on the street or walking outside.
I believe this picture was taken in the past not only because of the black and white, but because of the cars, apparel of the people, buildings, and the surroundings in general. I believe that the man in the protective gear is a germophobe who believes there is something harmful in the streets and is searching for it. The people passing by do not think there is anything harmful because they are not dressed like the man. @Jett I agree with what you said 100%. The protective suit and the stick he has really made him look like a germaphobe looking for something on the street. Either a germaphobe, an exterminator looking for rats, or a chemical guy. They all are relatively similar, clothing-wise.
Just by looking at the photo I’m guessing that this picture was taken somewhere in the US, based on the cars and the building. But the picture could be showing two things, the first thing could be some kind of leak maybe a radiation or a gas leak. His protective gear proves that there is something that he is trying to stop from touching him.

What's going on in this picture is that someone is walking through a city wearing protective gear. This may be the cause of a disease that is currently affecting this person surrounding population. What may also be going on is that this person is paranoid and may have a fear of germs. @Mike Real According to your response the thing that the person is holding is a metal detector, but I beg to differ as I believe that the person is carrying a device that may detect different levels of radiation or something. This is because I believe the person is scared of germs and diseases. Which led me to believe that the instrument in his hand is being used as a result of their fear.
From looking at the image, the image appears to be a black and white photo that is from the old days of a city, and in the photo it has citizens looking at a guy that is wearing a full body suit and a mask, to protect from being exposed by any harmful virus’s, the guy is also holding a detector stick that may track the virus’s. Now, what do I think about this image? Well, let's analyze it first, shall we? The clothing looks to be around a 70's sort of fashion, meaning that it must take place in the 1970s. Adding to that, more can be indicated by the muscle car in the background, which looks to be one of those big old gas-hungry muscle cars people used to drive back in the 70s, perhaps before the energy crisis that struck in 1979.
Looking at the main attraction, we can see what appears to be a man wearing a gas mask, wearing a Hazmat suit, and holding a Geiger detector, which is used to detect radiation levels in an area.
Using the context of anti-nuclear protests during the late 70's - especially after the Three Mile Island accident in 1979, in which the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant suffered a major nuclear meltdown - I believe it's safe to assume that this individual is protesting against nuclear power, as by then, the public had increased knowledge upon the effects of radiation on the body, and the terrible long-term effects that occur later on in life.
Fun fact: The Three Mile Island nuclear power plant shut down on September 30th of last year, not because that it gave cancer to many people who lived near it, nor because it was damaged - no, it was due to its unprofitability. The company that operated the plant lost 300 million in revenue after the accident, even though it was one of their best-performing power plants.

There are different levels of hazardous material suits, and in a Diseased place, or other incident they'd be wearing A suits or special hazmat suits that are above A.(there are A B C D hazmat suits, and there are ones for special occasions, such as a nuke, or disease, or radioactive substances, etc. (A is highest D is lowest)) Despite this a the normal hazardous material suits look nothing like this, so I'd say that either this isn't a hazardous material suit (Hazmat), or this is a costume of some sort, maybe for Halloween or a party.
Also looking in the back round the setting of the place seems rather old and looks like it could be in the 90's- at least the 70's. The cars seem old, so do the people's clothing. The civilians around the person in the hazmat suit seem to be giving a 'look' at the man/and or woman, they're body language seems to be a non-conflicted but interested or slightly confused, but none seem concerned. The picture is in black and white, but tis in good quality, so to narrow the time period own id say 1989-1990's (Since the first coloured camera came out in 1991.

1. There is a man in a hazmat type of suit as if he is under quarantine using a metal detector as he casually walks along the sidewalk. Everybody around him is giving him the look of confusion and seems to be wracking their brains trying to find an explanation for his wardrobe. We can infer that it is the 70's based on the car and style of clothing the people are wearing.
2. the picture is also in black and white making us believe that this was taken in the time period before colored photos were a thing. The buildings in the background seem outdated as well as the old car. HE is also wearing a breathing mask and a hazmat suit.
3. There is a stamp on his protective suit indicating that he might be coming from a scientific lab. Maybe he is looking for a specific metal/element within the town to use in his lab. Who knows maybe he just wanted to find extra change so he could go get some lunch but was sick and didn't want to spread disease.

I predict this man is searching for radiation after the Chernobyl Reactor Explosion in the 1980s. I think this because they are dressed for colder weather and it's very cold in Russia, also this man is dressed in full radiation gear, and the picture looks quite old but not too old. I can also kind of date this picture based off of the car in the background. I know that for a while after the incident, they didn't evacuate Chernobyl as they did not know if it was dangerous to live there or not. And for these reasons I think this picture was taken in Chernobyl, Russia in the 1980s

As a class, we think it is a scientist from the 1980s in LA who is wearing a radiation suit in order to track something. One piece of evidence for why it’s a radiation suit is the mask on their face. Looking at this picture, i can say that it is from an older time period, around 1950’s to 1970’s, judging by their hair, outfit, the cars, and that the picture is in black & white. We believe the masked man is searching for a toxic substance because of his protective mask and clothing and the unit he is using appears to be some sort of detection device. Also, this theory fits with the time period because this was the time of the Cold War in which Americans were under threat of nuclear attacks from Russia. In conclusion, based on the details in the picture, we feel confident that this depicts an American man in the Cold War Era who is searching for radioactive, toxic materials.

After looking closely at the image, I see a man in a protective suit and he seems to be holding a detector of some sort and may be searching for a poisonous/radioactive spill. I can infer that maybe this setting takes place sometime in the 1950's-1970's based on the clothing that is worn by the passersby. Also, the vehicles are older models. It appears to take place in a city/well populated area. He is wearing full protection gear, with a search object/detector in hand and gas mask on. In the photo, there are many people outside, suggesting that the public is not or has not been made aware of anything that might be happening; it is occuring at a busy intersection, suggesting that it is a large city - maybe New York or Chicago; it seems to date anywhere from the early 40's to the late 70's based on the style of jacket we see, the type of car models on the road, and just how "protective" the protective suit is.

In this image there is a man crossing the street. He is wearing what seems like protective gear and is holding a tool in his hand that looks like it can be used to find objects underground. He is also wearing those face masks that are used to purify the air one breathes in which leads me to assume that whatever he is looking for is harmful. Around him there are a few people who are also crossing the street looking at him probably curious of what he is doing and wearing. I have also observed that there is no one else around him that is wearing similar clothes or handling similar tools, thus I can assume that people around him are confused as to what he is doing and why he is wearing that.

@AM I agree with your statement that it is hard to believe. As you stated they are the only one dressed in such a way to protect themselves, however you should also note that their arms are exposed to the elements, which displays a small degree of danger to someone expecting contact with dangerous or lethal chemicals.
In the image given, a man in a suit seems to be detecting radiation on the street of some city. The support for this observation is that the man appears to be wearing a gas mask and a suit that could be a hazmat suit. He is also holding some sort of detecting device to aid him in search of something. When the image is closely analyzed, there are other men like the man that is in focus. They might be investigating a crime because a man that resembles a policeman is also present in the background.
After examining the aspects of the image, I view the image as an opposition of society. There are individuals who are opposed against society and view it as some sort of “plague”. The hazmat suit that the individual is wearing and how the others are looking at that individual in a disturbed way, are my reasonings to my ideology of the image. Furthermore, the image shows the person in the hazmat suit, having some sort of device in his hand meaning it’s a way for him to detect what’s actually causing distress in the society.
I think the man is trying to find a bomb or radioactive material that could be a problem for environment and the citizens. Moreover, I see the man wearing mask and special clothes which is using for protecting from chemical items and dangerous gasses. Also, I may get the clue looking to the image is black and white to find what environmental problems happened in the early times.
Judging from the way the man in the picture is holding a machine-like object and is wearing full body protection, it can be assumed that he is searching for something that is potentially dangerous. Key word being potentially. Because though the man is covered from head to toe, he is also surrounded by civilians who seem to be simply going about their daily lives. Had there been a life threatening situation, the city would have been evacuated and there would be no people visible on the street.

The guy in the white suit looks like its detecting some radioactive substance or some toxic substance? Maybe he is wearing the suit to avoid contact with the unknown substance. People walk by him thinking "what is he doing?" or "why is he wearing that suit?"and This picture looks like it was taken in the 1960s-1980s.
I think a radioactive chemical had leaked out somewhere and he had to go out and find it. To find it he is using what looks like a Geiger counter, to stay protected he is wearing a hazmat suit. or maybe he's getting back from somewhere that radiation was tested, it's in the '60s because of the clothes and cars.

It appears that the man in the mask is possibly spraying some type of fumes or looking for something, I'm not sure what. The setting is most likely in mid to late 1900's because of the model of the car in the background and the way the outside of the buildings look. I say this because it looks like he doesn't care that he could potentially be freaking the people out around him. Unless this is a normal thing. Could be a metal detector or some sort of radiation detector. Possibly the latter since he is covered head to toe in protective gear. Taking another look, this is an older photo and you can tell from the clothing the other pedestrians are wearing and the older model cars.

We can infer that the man is in a hazmat suit testing for radiation based on the wand attached to the box in his hand. The black and white of the picture, the peoples clothes, and the model of the cars tells us this took place many years ago. The people in the picture are confused by him and do not expect his actions, which we can tell by the look on their faces.

I'd say this man is in the early 70's, judging by the model of car in the background. Furthermore, he is probably training for reclamation of urban spaces after an anticipated attack, as the pedestrians around him have not been quarantined from the area, and the cold war was still in full swing.

Our 5th grade class is learning about making inferences. We used clues from the photo to answer the three questions. We noticed that the guy is wearing a hazmat suit and wearing a gas mask. He also think he has a metal detector in his hands. He could be trying to clean up after when Pearl Harbor was bombed, or another city that was bombed by nuclear missiles. We think this took place in the 1960's time period because of the old cars, the old clock in the background, and based on the clothes that the people are wearing.

We wonder if the person in the haz-mat suit is dressed up because of the worry about nuclear war. This may be the time of the Cold War. Isn't it a little weird that if he is actually looking for something radioactive, the other people are totally unprotected? If I were them I'd feel a little uneasy about this guy walking around in a hazmat suit! Maybe he's just a crazy guy trying to get attention.
I think that, since it seems to be an older photo, this man is measuring the amount of radiation after a nuclear bomb testing. I do know that scientists were not very careful when we were first studying it, even having soldiers run towards the bombs until they felt sick, so I think that this may be a town close to the test so they can see how far radiation travels.
I think he's probably an exterminator or some other kind of pest control, and he's walking to where he's supposed to be after parking a bit down the road. He's probably dressed like that because he wanted to get ready beforehand, but is getting odd looks because of his unusual attire.
We can infer the man in the bizarre suit is an exterminator spraying chemicals of some kind, OR he is painting white lines on the road for a crosswalk or road directions. Our inferences are based on the suit and mask that looks like it is being worn in order to prevent chemicals from getting on his skin or being inhaled, and based on the hose he carries attached to a box.
The man in the gas mask looks like he might be trying to detect any kind of radiation, but the public does not know of any risk. It seems that it was taken a while ago, since it is in black and white and the equipment he is using looks pretty old.

-He is sucking up trash and it is collected in his container.
-He is cleaning the sidewalk. (like a pressure washer)
-He's sucking up bees to take back to his house and make honey.

The image portrays an aberration amid a normal day in the city (which is inferred from the black and white colors and the vintage car). The white masked figure reminds me of movies such as MonstersInc where protection from something toxic is needed. Judging from the lack of alarm (and more curiosity) in the complexions of those around the figure, I am guessing there is nothing alarming or important. Maybe the figure is on his way to kill some roaches.

We believe that the picture takes place in New York City or a large city. We know this because there are tall buildings and there is a lot of traffic. We think it takes place in the 60's or 70's because of the plaid jacket the man is wearing. Also, the picture is black and white which tells us that it is not in modern times. Some of us think that it is a random man looking for something because if it was something like the government, there would probably be cones to let people know. In addition, some of us believe that the man wearing the hazmat suit works for the government and that he is searching for a chemical like oil.

Halloween Costume test run? Probably not but he looks like he just came from somewhere or is going somewhere where there is harmful chemicals in the air. I can't tell if the kid looking back at him is jealous of the outfit he is wearing or highly concerned. It looks pretty old because it is black and white but it could also just be a filter.
