How are republicans cheating this time? You know they are!
Nancy fleming (Shaker Heights ohio)
The honesty of The Democrat shows. The involvement of Bishop In the fraud in the last election speaks loud and clear!
Hank (Charlotte)
Dan Bishop represents the North Carolina of the past. Dan McCready is the North Carolina of the future. It's a shame that the GOP in this state has taken us back to pre-Terry Sanford times. North Carolina was progressive and forward-looking until the Republicans decided that they needed to run the state for their own benefit and contrary to the will of the residents. Amazing example: More than 50 percent of the state votes Democrat in an election that sends Republicans to Washington for 10 of 13 districts. Signs of hope: the state elections officials tossed the cheating win in District 9 last year, and the state courts have ordered the legislature to fairly redraw districts in an open and transparent process. The state government is being brought to heel to the will of the people. About time!!
Thomas Payne (Blue North Carolina)
As a Democrat and liberal who has lived in North Carolina since 1999 I cannot remember a more important moment in our state. We have been under siege from a corrupt republican legislature and a powerful minority of wealthy outsiders (carpetbaggers) who correctly saw this state as ripe for plucking. Their political corruption has been well-documented in the pages of the Times and we thank you for that. Between this election and the imminent redrawing of our obviously gerrymandered districts there is a faint glimmer of what just might be a light at the end of the tunnel. Much to the shame of the good people who live here, Trump has found our state a convenient destination for his rallies and we have received so much negative press as a result: To those of you around the world: This is not us and we will fix it if we just have a fair chance to show that we are the "Great North State."

Not so fast. The 9th district is a solidly republican district. It will be an uphill slog all the way.
PAN (NC)
@Paul P Solidly Republican or solidly stolen by Republicans in the past? There's a difference.
PAN (NC)
Don’t forget the simultaneous and just as important US House election in the third district in NC that suffered a direct hit by Dorian and Florence and which is subject to Republican shenanigans too.

a Little known fact about Bishop's legislative tactics. Everyone is aware of the "bathroom bill" Almost no one is aware that in the deep recesses or the bill Bishop sneaked in a provision wiping out the one right that NC workers had under state law, discharge in violation of the public policy of that was contained in the general statutes that prohibited discharge on the basis of age, handicap, religion, disability, sex, race, and national origin. Bishop's provision read : "This Article does not create, and shall not be construed to create or support, a statutory or common-law private right of action, and no person may bring any civil action based upon the public policy expressed herein." The public policy statute had a three-year statute of limitations. Bishop's only excuse was that workers could still file an EEOC charge ignoring the much shorter time periods in Title VII. Not the man we need in Congress.

I lived in Austin for 33 years and feel I know the south, but I'm a SoCal boy. If a democrat can win this election in N.C., it spells doom for the republicans. They have not elected a democrat in half a century. Already, about 13 republican congressmen from Texas have decided not to run for re-election. This could shape up to be a blue tidal wave election. If we can take Texas from the republicans, we will have the five biggest States in the union and a lock on the presidency. I'm planting my RIP GOP sign.
Denise (California)
Trump and Pence. We should have Michelle and Barack in SC.
Tony C (Portland, OR)
To me it seems like some folks who plan to vote in this NC Congressional race want to support the Republican candidate simply b/c Mr. Bishop's values align with Trump's--a president they believe is unfairly attacked by the media and the left. As a nation it's embarrassing and scary that millions of Americas share values in line with Trump's brand of winner take all politics which involves lying to and publicly humiliating others from a place of leadership in a public office. Folks like Ms. Johnson in this article are unconcerned with Trump's disregard for basic, presidential norms of decency and respect for others. They just want him to keep his political promises by any means necessary. Ironically, many on the right appreciate Trump's ability to 'call it like he sees it,' yet when journalists call it as they see it and report accordingly on Trump's incompetence and ineptitude as POTUS, the right plays the victim, whining about how their demigod of a president is being attacked unfairly. To value a brand of politics that views amorality as a means to a politically successful end is truly shameful. But the right is not interested in self-reflection, especially when their policies are so popular. Such a mindset is the basis for the GOP's collective amnesia. To self-reflect is to analyze their own past which might lead them to acknowledge their own political shortcomings and biases.

Once again, Trump supporters show their limited worldview when electing their representatives. Good grief.
Eli Beckman (San Francisco, CA)
The only reason this election is even happening is because of Republican voter fraud. That one of the two major political parties in the world’s foremost democracy has abandoned the very ideas of democracy in a naked bid to stay in power against the will of the people shows how undeserving the GOP is of anyone’s vote.
JHM (UK)
"Vote McCready and change the direction this country has been headed in." This should be their main campaign statement. Show the nation that come southerners are afterall open-minded and fair. Not haters like the founders of the Tea Party and those who now support the aggressive stance of many running for office, mostly Republican from what I see.
syfredrick (Providence)
I lived in the 9th District for 17 years until I moved to Providence in 2016. It was so frustrating to live in South Charlotte and be in this gerrymandered district. For years we were stuck with racist, homophobic commissioner Bill James running unopposed. What a joy to read about his defeat last year. It gives me hope that North Carolina will finally turn the corner.
alprufrock (Portland, Oregon)
So if all that happens when you get caught cheating to win an election is that you pick another candidate and go again, why would you not cheat? If you get caught robbing a bank and all they do is make you give the money back, then why wouldn't you rob banks? Those who have drunk the Kool-Aid believing that Trump has been given a raw deal by the media have stopped paying attention to how he governs long ago. If your uncle is taking a hammer to the expensive dinnerware and your call him out for that, you are not giving him a raw deal. You are saving the crystal.

"Mr. McCready’s campaign said it knocked on 100,000 doors twice over the weekend. It is part of an elaborate effort — powered by data analytics and digital tools — to turn out his supporters, including a sizable African-American population and a smaller but substantial number of Native Americans, and change the face of the district’s electorate." a Native American activist group named FOUR DIRECTIONS is on the ground helping defend voting rights of Lumbee tribe voters and helping folks get to the polls. they are a worthy group doing great work. please check out their website.
Rick Gage (Mt Dora)
Bob Stone says he'll vote Republican because the Democrats are "All lock step and "Russia ,Russia, Russia! Racism, Racism, Racism. It gets old.". The only reason it's repeated is that people, like Bob, don't seem to get hat Russia helped get him elected and Racism is a recurring theme in his presidency. The fact that Bob has chosen to ignore these facts shows why we will never convince the Bob's of this world that Trump is an unpatriotic bigot. Trying to get Bob to deal with reality is what's getting old.
Norman McDougall (Canada)
Irrespective of the result, it’s hard to imagine North Carolina as a bellwether for the nation. Given the volatility of both the Liar-In-Chief and the electorate as well, it’s premature to think that there’s any useful lesson here.
JQGALT (Philly)
President Trump is holding a rally for Bishop this evening. He’s winning. Case closed.
Ted Siebert (Chicagoland)
Since a Democrat has not won in that district since 1960 they have everything to gain and nothing to lose, but oh my goodness if the GOP loses this one they might want to embrace a new candidate in the GOP election since their recent winner is simply gone stark raving mad.......”I knew nothing of the Air Force staying at my place Scotland.” That’s my new favorite whopper, followed by the Sharpie, the crowd size, I use only the best words, and on and on and on. A true master of deception.
Counter Measures (Old Borough Park, NY)
Aside from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, North Carolina gets more ink, than any other state, in The New York Times! The owners should consider opening up an office there!
Paula (East Lansing, MI)
Awwww. I feel so sorry (not) for the poor guy who is just so tired of hearing about Russia, Russia, Russia and racism, racism, racism. Maybe he should consider listening to the government and military folks who saw Russian interference and move away from the guy the Russians were helping. And maybe if one party wasn't doing everything possible to disenfranchise African Americans, he wouldn't have to be so tired of the word racism. If your kid is continually complaining that he's hungry, maybe you should solve the problem and feed him instead of complaining about all the noise. And that lady will wait a long time before the so-called president gives her that middle class tax cut. Wonder if she'll ever figure out she's been had by a consummate grifter.
Ray Sipe (Florida)
Voter Fraud = GOP Guilty. Vote Blue no matter who.
Cousy (New England)
Major fingers crossed for this one. I believe that NC is the most important bellwether state in the country. It is one of the few states that has it all - rural poverty, major research universities, a big city/corporate capital, big agriculture, poultry farms, coastal vacation spots etc. My extended family is usually caught politically - the Republican candidates are too conservative, the Democrats too liberal. Of course, we never talk politics. (Sigh)
Boards (Alexandria)
I wish the apparent pathology, perhaps too pejorative a term to describe how conservatives talk themselves into supporting Trump could be identified. Is it deliberately sought after and maintained ignorance? These people in the sticks are negatively impacted by the current Republican agenda yet they remain devoted to their abusers. This dynamic is truly perplexing.
PK (Santa Fe NM)
@Boards Me thinks they are not educated on the issues and don't take the time to get educated.
deborah wilson (kentucky)
@Boards In the sticks let's go with simple fear that manifests itself as hatred and greed. In the moneyed urbanite let's just go with greed. KIS. Keep it simple.
BP (Alameda, CA)
It's already been established that North Carolina is the most advanced of the Southern States of Hate when it comes to the systemic disfranchisement of black voters. The entrenched GOP power structure won't let this race be lost. End of story.
pi (maine)
@BP all the more reason to get active, get organized, and get out the vote. here in maine's conservative 2nd congressional district (which went for trump) we overcame gop dirty tricks to flip an entrenched gop seat. it can be done. bye bye susan (collins) is our next rallying cry. but it will take hard everybody's work.
Paul P (Greensboro,NC)
Not so fast. Thanks to judges who can read and interpret the state constitution, the politicians are no longer allowed to pick their voters. This race will not be the one with any major surprises, but the 2020 election should be interesting.
Nancy S. (Germany)
We members of Democrats Abroad have been calling NC voters who are overseas to help them vote in this election. These state level races are important and every vote counts. The Republicans have been playing dirty tricks in NC long enough. Let's hope Mr. McCready can have a chance to turn things around there.
Jean (Cleary)
How can any Republican of good moral fiber vote for Bishop. He is an enabler of Trump. How can any Republican in North Carolina support corruption in the last election. Dan McCready should have been seated after it was proven that illegal acts by his Opponent and the opponents staff were done with the full knowledge of the Republican Candidate? What ever happened to decent Republican Voters in North Carolina?
Brandon (Boston, MA)
The NC 9 race was tainted in 2018 by a Republican "illegal voting scheme". McCready should have been the de facto winner in this race after the cheating and yet, McCready was made to campaign again and raise more money again. Republicans and the White House are petrified of losing this district because they know what it foretells for 2020 across the country and that's why Trump is heading there to campaign tonight. Will there be more chants of "send her back" when he's back in NC tonight? What other lies will he spew to try to sway Republican voters to not vote for the rightful winner of this race- McCready?
CBK (San Antonio, TX)
Dan McCready, you have been brave and strong and inspirational to persevere with the *campaign you already won* the first time. North Carolinians, do the right thing! Show us all that the usual Republican tricks and money-filled, empty, conman spectacles do not work any more!!! Godspeed, McCready!
Laura Reich (Matthews, NC)
Many of us have worked hard for McCready for two years. He has a great ground game and I hope that will put him over the top tomorrow.
Andrew (Former NYer, Pinehurst NC)
Let’s all hope McCreedy wins. Bathroom Bill Burton going to Washington would be a real affront to the LBGT community. In any other contest, McCreedy would have long ago been declared the winner. How come in politics when the winner criminally cheats and is thus disqualified, the runner-up isn’t declared the winner. That’s how every other contest I know of works. This is an unfair system; the Republicans were up to their eyeballs in the voter fraud and giving them a second chance is to reward corruption.
Thomas Payne (Blue North Carolina)
@Andrew Not "voter" fraud: ELECTION Fraud. They should all be in prison.
PAN (NC)
@Andrew Too bad that when the winner criminally cheats, he is not disqualified when the race is for POTUS. Runner up should be declared the winner, or at the very least a do-over with the disqualified candidate in Guantanamo for betraying the sacred - our democracy. No doubt if McCrory were still governor the criminal cheaters would have gotten away with their crime and we'd have an illegitimate rep in the House.
Evan (NC)
McCready seems tailor-made for NC politics. While the state leans slightly conservative, it's not the same flavor of conservatism as Trump represents. Large military bases and the Research Triangle have ensured a constant mixing in from folks all over the country and world. The pro-military and -business aspects of traditional conservatism play well, but hard-line stances on immigration, social issues, and government reinvestment fall flat. I don't know the 9th district well, but McCready is more in line with the state overall than Bishop.
CPod (Malvern, PA)
@Evan That may be true, but the Republicans have gerrymandered that state to death. And as they have shown us time after time, they are willing to cheat to win.
James (Boston)
@Evan I agree and it’s too bad the DSCC could not find someone with a similar background to compete in this and other Senate races that are conceivably competitive. A big reason the bathroom bill was rejected in the first place is because it was bad for business.
JQGALT (Philly)
@Evan Business can have any kinds of bathrooms they choose. The government shouldn’t be telling them.
