The photo of Mr. Alvarez at the Congressional hearing is heartbreaking. I'm sure the Committee gave him a standing O, just like Americans now spring to their feet for the God Bless America 7th inning stretch, constantly blabber about "Our Heroes" and then vilify Kapernick for not joining in. What better comment on our country than the fact that a true hero (not a military paper-pusher like I was) has to go to Congress hat-in-hand to seek financing for his illness. Glad to hear that Mitch McConnell will deign to bring it up for a vote. We should all be ashamed.
9
I knew Lou and worked with him before and after 9/11. He was a kind decent soul who did not deserve to get sick and die in this way. Our government told the first responders that the air was safe, and it clearly wasn’t. And now our Government has to think about whether to continue to fully fund the compensation fund. That this is even a discussion is shameful.
19
The sight of this strapping, big guy in 2006, compared to the old sick shadow of himself he had become at the Congressional hearing just before his death brought me to tears. Lou Alvarez grew up in my neighborhood in Queens, went to a similar Catholic high school, and was buried in the same neighborhood at a Catholic church. He was so similar, in appearance and calling, to my dear cousin, who was also a 9/11 first responder. Carmine died two years ago of an unknown ailment, for which he never followed up (he didnt like doctors). How many deaths related to 9/11 have not even been officially recorded? I hope Congress will finally do right by these heroes who were political pawns from the beginning -- they should never been exposed to that toxic environment in the first place. There was no one left to rescue after that first collapse, only DNA, for which these responders should not have had to sacrifice their lives. They were there, digging through rubble for months, only to give the politicians something to point to to show we were "doing something."
18
The callousness of Congress to those who unknowingly---and unquestioning-;-sacrificed everything (their friends, familoes, health, lives), when they were needed most, is shocking and surreal, EVEN in today's political climate.
So embarrassed. So sorry that this hero had to spend his last days begging Congress for something so, simply, owed. To think that the travels and stress of this political roadblock cost this many days on his life. Just outrageous.
I will actively vote (and readily acknowledge myself as a single-issue voter, as I proclaim here) *against* any congressional candidates on the ballot if they are not fully behind this bill, with half the heart of Mr. Stewart (if they have so much). Can I--can we do more here?
18
A true hero but the NY Times is not affording any scrutiny to the presumption that colon cancer is related to the WTC exposure. Politics aside, there isn't evidence that the respiratory toxins caused much more than respiratory ailments (see: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4686342/) and very little evidence that anyone developed cancer as a result of WTC exposure (https://www.ascopost.com/issues/september-15-2014/911-and-cancer-what-do-we-know/).
The truth here is uncomfortable because we all want to show our great admiration for the first responders. But the politics and money have made people lose sight of reality. It would be nice if the NY Times would examine the data more carefully. Mr. Alvarez was a hero regardless of the cause of his death.
5
VOTE VOTE VOTE like our lives, the lives of our children and their children depend on it! Which it does. Do not abdicate your responsibility! Please. Thank you.
10
I am so sorry for the response of our country to this and other brave people doing their best. Many, many of us are so proud of this person and so ashamed of the GOP. Forgive our sins.
19
This is no Democracy when Mitch McCconnel 'decides' what bills the Senate will vote on.
Quote from the article: The Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, has said that he would allow a vote on the bill by next month."
ALLOW a vote on a crucial piece of legislation ..unbelievable. The America empire is truly ending when one man has this much power - way too much in my book.
42
"The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it. "- Thucydides
My deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Alvarez. He has met every challenge and clearly his legacy is in the right hands.
31
Could anyone please explain to me the relationship between colorectal cancer, which press reports say Alvarez died from, and any 9/11 environmental exposure? Colorectal cancer is thought to result primarily from diet and genetic sources. I can't find any link to any exposure from working around the fallen twin towers.
5
Epidemiologic studies have thus far identified what appears to be a possible link between colorectal cancer and toxic exposures in 9/11 workers. The disease has been presenting in relatively young men without any other significant risk factors. It is also presenting as advanced disease, stage IV in a number of cases, at initial diagnosis, which is very unusual.
33
@KML. All the recent epidemiological analysis I can find say the cancer rate does appear any different form what you would find if you sampled a random group of people of similar demographics.
2
@wayne griswald
I'm not sure your question is deserving of an answer.
21
Luis Alvarez, we honor you.
Having been at Ground Zero many times, this is tragic that victims, who were trying to do duty, had to about beg on their hands and knees for compensation and funding from our Congress!
My daughter is a flight attendant and led us to Ground Zero in December of 2001, while these people, so now maimed and crippled in one way or another were working day and night for the good of our country. We saw them with the lights shining at night, digging, digging, digging. Perhaps Mr. Alvarez was among them. Little did they know how their very own country would dishonor them! Betray them!
And how many times from Wisconsin have I visited the Trinity Church, the chapel that housed and fed those workers. I have shown the movie of this effort which I purchased from the church to many groups back here in Wisconsin, heralding these efforts. Perhaps Mr. Alvarez was one of the helpers in that video, on those grounds, resting on those church pews or eating the food that was prepared, one of 1400 daily meals after breaking his back working.
Or maybe Mr. Alvarez stooped and said a few prayers in that church, gazed at the cemetery there and wondered how it survived among that world of rubble and hopelessness.
Today we honor this man. A man of passion, who up til his last days, tried in his way to take care of fellow Americans. Rest In Peace, sir. Yes, we honor you.
39
@MIMA
Hello, I am also from Wisconsin, and have journeyed many times to GZ (and all iterations since), after the murder of my niece Andrea there that day.
Thank you for caring so, going to the site to pay respects, and to continue to think of and honor the all the many rescue & recovery workers who gave and gave and gave of themselves, completely unselfishly.
Thanks also to your daughter, a flight attendant, who knows the stakes so well. Blessings to all.
31
@jazz one & MIMA
This New Yorker honors Detective Luis G. Alvarez, his wife, his sons, all of the brave responders and their families, all of the victims and their families as well as both of you. We will not forget the tragedy and bravery borne of the terror on 9/11. Tomorrow is the 4th, a time to celebrate our democratic principles and our bonds to one another. Your comments reminded me of how much we need to come together.
12
The way this country turned their back on this man and many others like him, is beyond disgraceful.
May he rest in peace.
57
Detective Alvarez is a hero. He and many others deserved much better from the federal government . He went above and beyond the call of duty. By contrast, the vacuous, self serving and craven Republican senate and House do nothing .How much longer is this country going to tolerate the stress about the continued uncertainty regarding healthcare? It is lunacy. Both houses must elect democratic majorities in 2020.
24
I’m looking for Christine Todd Whitman’s condolences. I don’t see any. I will never forget her radio statements in the days after 9/11 that ...not to worry...NYC air is safe to breathe and the water is safe to drink. Subsequent legal proceedings held her not responsible for her statements, blame being shunted downstream to the sewer that is Washington. Is there a statute of limitations? Can charges be resurrected. Can’t conviction be a valid penalty for being an ignoramus? It would start a much needed precedent. And, sewer people, sign the bill as a token gesture of trying to redeem your tattered souls.
25
@bylaws -- Agree! She should be prosecuted. She violated her duty to protect the health of the workers in declaring the site safe, where all the evidence at the time clearly demonstrated it was not. They were not even supplied masks or other protective gear as they went through the grim motions of digging through the rubble by hand for months -- looking for what? Pieces of DNA? For this they lost their lives? Terrorists killed the people crushed by the towers that day, but the hubris, incompetence, and indifference of our state and federal officials killed even more.
4
A true unselfish hero indeed.
I hope Christine Todd Whitman stays up at night thinking about all those who died or are suffering because of either her incompetence or criminal actions by lying about the conditions at ground zero.
And how a backwards, uncaring coward of a senator from Kentucky who can hold up legislation to help my fellow New Yorkers makes me angry.
I always like Jon Stewart and what he has done to help the 9/11 responders has made him both a hero and a patriot. Well done sir!
36
@John E. -- yes, indeed, from the moment Christy Todd Whitman pronounced that toxic hellscape safe I could not believe how she was putting political expediency -- doing Bush's bidding for a distracting, dramatic display of (completely futile) action -- over the lives of the responders whose health it was her duty to protect. I knew that day that in ignoring the science, she was signing their death certificates.
6
Mr. Alvarez was an immigrant.
Not from Norway.
Not from an english speaking country.
Unlikely to qualify under the proposed "merit" immigration system now being considered
and yet a hero.
If America excludes people like Mr. Alvarez going forward, we will be that much poorer.
Luis Alvarez, Presente!
61
@Enrique Hernandez Agree. Trump is a racist cruello, who takes pleasure in dehumanizing anybody 'non-white', a most stupid stance of a deeply arrogant, and ignorant by choice, president. Fortunately, all things come to pass, and the one we shall remember is Luis Alvarez, not the loose beast that contributed to his demise.
6
@manfred marcus -- do not blame this president for Mr. Alvarez's death. The president on 9/11 was George W. Bush, who quite literally sent him and thousands of other responders to their deaths, for the sake of political theater.
1
Mr. Alvarez is a true American hero. His family can take great comfort in that. We should be embarrassed that in his last month he had to beg Congress to support the 9/11 fund as a permanent stand alone entity.
but lets spend millions on a private parade to donald trump and republican donors.
Mitch McConnell is a gutless politician and doesn't deserve his name in the same paragraph as Mr. Alvarez.
shaking my head.
where did our country go?
35
True Hero.
14
These guys were heroes, doing a really tough job. It is really disgusting that we can't take care of these guys that did not hesitate to (figuratively) run into a burning building to help people they do not even know, yet we have enough money to give illegal aliens free medical.
4
@BorisRoberts
And women. Women were among the site workers in many capacities, and also have on-going / escalating health issues.
12
Oops, no disrespect intended, I meant everyone involved.
"For no greater love"! Here is a REAL HERO, and where are the thunderings from the White House, from the halls of Congress. This man had to drag his dying body to the seat of power to BEG fro help for his fellows, men and women who when there was need, RAN to the danger and the fire. No, there is no greater love or sacrifice and we cannot allow this to be forgotten. The fact that there is hatred is not nearly so important as the fact that there is love and heroism which responds to it! WE DO NOT NEED TANKS IN THE STREETS. WE HAVE MEN AND WOMEN LIKE LUIS ALVAREZ. HONOR THEM!
19
G-d bless the first responders and G-d bless Jon Stewart.
16
@Retiree Lady I am so tired of blessings. They need decent health care and support.
2
My condolences to detective Alvarez’s family. They must have suffered greatly watching Det. Alvarez undergo numerous treatments and withering of his body.
Detective Alvarez was a true American hero and man of character. Unlike the pompous, self indulgent, flag waver of convenience, heading our country.
Let’s honor all our 9/11 heros and vote for someone who is worthy of them in 2020.
47
I am sorry.
12
Keep fighting Jon Stewart we got your back.
God speed Mr. alveza
18
Rest In Peace, Mr Alvarez. And condolences to your loving family.
12
God bless & Godspeed Mr. Alvarez.
As a 9/11 family member whose loved one (Andrea, age 25, in city overnight 10th/11th and at WTC 1 for merely one hour that morning, on her first trip ever to employer office located there) was found in small, partial fragments beginning in April 2002 and beyond via the search for remains on the Pile and elsewhere, I am forever humbled and grateful for your unstinting and unflinching service during our nation's time of need.
My forever thanks go to all the dedicated workers: the FDNY, NYPD, Port Authority, many, many City/Municipal employees, the 'deconstruction' workers of Bovis et al, and all the 'regular people' volunteers (extraordinary humans all) with who stayed on the site, advocating fiercely for the dead even when -- especially when -- it meant bucking the orders from then-Mayor Giuliani to hurry it up already, and stalwartly continued working tirelessly to try to find something, anything, to bring even a tiny bit of a missing loved one 'home.'
What they saw cannot be unseen.
What they did cannot be discounted or forgotten.
They paid many terrible costs for their fervent service.
We know an amazing group of these people. Just one small segment/sliver of the many. Heroes all. Many sick -- very, very sick. Pray for them, and please support them, ask your legislator to do the right thing and make sure they have the medical care and support they need for the long haul.
~ 9/11 family member
31
@jazz one
I'm so sorry about Andrea.
2
We all owe our thanks to these people, all of them, the police, firefighters, priests, everyone who felt the call.
I just watched the miniseries Chernobyl. So many responders to that disaster as well sacrificed so much to save so many.
7
Thank you for your service, dear sir. I hope you are at peace. Sending hugs and comfort to the family you've left behind.
I cannot believe how sad this makes me.
12
So many of us are awed by your courage and your heroism. Rest in peace, dear friend.
14
Luis Alvarez, an immigrant from Cuba, lived a life of service, first in the Marine Corps and then the NYPD. I wonder if he would have been allowed into the country today. How many others just like him are being denied entry by Mr. Trump, Mr. McConnell, et al?
36
My deepest thanks for your service and heartfelt condolences for your family. You represent Americans at their finest.
21
Rest in Peace Mr. Alvarez. Our tremendous gratitude is given up to you and all of our heroes of that day. We love you and your family.
15
Counter Culture Warning - but my view is a large number of city workers irresponsibly put themselves at risk by going to the 9-11 site with no personal protection or reasonable care in a known chemical risk. Not to save anyone’s life but to recover body parts. And sickness was the foreseeable consequence.
@Brian Mc Christine Todd Whitman said the air was OK.
11
@Brian Mc Hey there, I see you're from Boston, so I'm going to guess you weren't there in NYC on September 11. I was. I lived five blocks from the site. We were evacuated for just three weeks. When we went back -- the fires were still burning. For three months. What was there to do? Someone had to clean up the mess. Someone had to find the bodies. We had to go home. It wasn't done out of choice. It was done out of necessity. And just so you understand: it smelled like death for months afterwards.
31
My point is they went into the site w 0 protection.
Godspeed Mr. Alvarez. You are the best of the best and will be missed by all the people in the city you served so well. Forgive me if I get choked up, but you led your life just as you did that terrible day in September of 2001: A HERO IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD. Farewell and may a grateful nation take good care of your family.
16
May he rest in real peace and may his family and friends find comfort in one another, in his memory, and in knowing that people around the country carry them and him in our hearts today. And may we and our representatives find the will to do the right thing.
25
Perhaps Mr. Trump can have his Saudi friends make overdue reparations for this heinous attack and financially support this fund; after all, the 9/11 Saudi terrorists are the cause of Mr. Alvarez's and other first responders illnesses and subsequent fatalities. Having said this, our federal government, not NY state, must step up and renew and replenish this fund until every responder and their families are served by it. There should be no debate and Mitch McConnell and the Senate must step up! Thanks to great Americans like our first responders who keep us safe every day. Kudos to John Stewart and Rep. Carolyn Maloney and all who are fighting for them.
RIP Luis.
31
@Bill Devlin So, did the governor and the mayor take time to attend his funeral? (hint: the answer is no)
1
@Dev
To Dev: Don't know what your response has to do with the guilty Saudis paying reparations, but in regards to De Blasio and Cuomo. First, there is no love lost between DeBlasio and the NYPD. They've asked him to stay away in the past. And anyway - any politician is damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they show its a "photo op" if they don't its a snub.
3
@Dev
Not for anything but those politicians? They aren't fit to attend a funeral such as this. It's just another photo op for them. Good riddance to dB and Cuomo.
3
It was a battle well fought, Luis.
You fought it for all of us.
There is no greater duty....
29
Mr Alvarez wasn’t just a hero to 9/11 responders - he exemplified what a hero is to all Americans. God bless him, his family and all who serve us without any expectations of reward.
32
A beautiful soul and a Hero passed away for lack of government response .
Just hope all your pleas would not go to waste Sir.
Rest in Peace .
26
Maya Angelou wisely said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them..."
We saw you Mr. Alvarez. We know what to believe, because we saw it with our own eyes - a true American hero. My deepest condolences to your family, loved ones and your many, many friends and compatriots.
Maya Angelou wisely said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them..."
We see you Mitch McConnell. We know what to believe because we see it with our own eyes, a "man" who proudly calls himself the "Grim Reaper" - and we believe you because you are literally letting people die.
57
How large a man was Luis Alvarez. How small a man is Mitch McConnell.
83
I lived in NYC for over a decade and 2 months before 9/11 I visited the towers in lower Manhattan. I said goodbye with a last look, not knowing what was to come.
Heroes like Alvarez are the ones who do their job and do not question what needs to be done. They do it and then some. That is the not knowing part. It is who they are and they rise when we need them to. That care for them has to be fought for is beyond my comprehension.
My thoughts are for his family and those who are still here fighting.
We know Mr. Alvarez can rest in peace finally but I do not know how Congress can rest until all those who responded, many at a great cost, are allowed to live their time knowing their country salutes them and care is there to help them.
28
May God bless Luis Alvarez and his family. He truly epitomized New York's Finest. His courage and dignity should serve as an inspiration to all who strive for justice. As Jon Stewart said the 9/11 first responders answered their call within minutes - it is now time for that despicable McConnell to strap on a pair and let the vote be taken to protect their future - or what's left of it.
28
Rest in Peace you brave, brave man. Let us all be the people deserving of this type of service and protection. Recall: The only defense, the ONLY response by the USA to the attacks in NYC that morning was from first responders rushing to the scene to combat the destruction and try to evacuate people safely. By the time Bush got to his bunker, by the time jets were scrambling, the deeds were done and our only hope in NYC was in these fellow New Yorkers who did not hesitate to come to our aid. Police officers were rescuing people AND securing the area as a crime scene. Incredible sacrifice. Incredible service with honor. And the ones who survived that day went back willingly day after day to the pile....
Please everyone call your senators today and don't take no for an answer. Never forget. Luis Alvarez is one of many who gave their lives to our country that day and who continue to suffer. We owe him and all the the others nothing less than full support for their medical issues and trauma. Be a hero to those who were heroes in our hour of need.
34
Money for a Soviet style parade, but not for the heroes of 9/11. I hope that Detective Alvarez didn't die in vain.
49
I don't believe for a second that the soulless traitor Mitch McConnell will let this bill come to a vote. Unless it's used as a poison bill (or actually a hostage) to compel Democrats to vote for some unconscionable betrayal of American values (basically anything Drumph seems to call for these days, alas). It's time to recognize that Mitch McConnell (and the party he leads in Congress) is an enemy of democracy and decency. And a betrayer of the heroes of 9/11 (who after all are part of the big-city coastal elite).
38
Thank you for your service Mr. Alvarez, RIP amen.
13
Those who sacrificed on 9/11 are the real America. We had a once-in-a-lifetime chance to keep our country united, but the Politicians only saw opportunities. I think about those heroes who brought the plane down in PA to protect the very "leaders" who now spit on our Constitution, almost daily. It saddens me deeply.
26
God bless and thank you, Mr. Alvarez.
12
I live in the United States of America, the wealthiest country in the world. This gross injustice could be fixed, if those in power decided it was important.
21
On the eve of our nation's birthday, it is a solemn yet reassuring reminder that there are heroes still in our midst. I extend my sympathies to Mr. Alvarez's family and friends - and to us all in the loss of this hero too soon. It is incomprehensible why McConnell delayed a vote on this; it would have meant so much to Mr. Alvarez to have witnessed the achievement of his quest before he departed this fractured world. Peace be with you, Mr. Alvarez.
29
As someone who has buried both of my parents after their successive battles with cancer, I am profoundly touched by this man’s public and private efforts to secure funding for his fellow responders. It’s impossible to describe the difficulty of cancer and its treatments - they constitute an endurance test beyond words. The fact that Alvarez faced so much to help others is indicative of nothing less than heroism.
41
Maybe some off that NY tax revenue that goes to support Kentucky can be re-routed to help these true heroes' families. These first responders have more courage in each breath than McConnell has exhibited in his entire life.
62
I'm stunned that there aren't more comments on this article. These men and women are the heroes among us and it pains to think that the public is unaware, and worse, that our feckless Congress has no sense of urgency for a decidedly time-sensitive issue.
Heartfelt gratitude and condolences to Mr. Alvarez's family, and a tip of the hat to him and all the people who rushed in to help on 9/11. You'll never be forgotten.
45
Adversity doesn't develop character, it reveals it.
Rest in peace Luis Alvarez, you have earned it.
54
Thank you Luis Alvarez for your service to the city and in your advocacy for the Victim Compensation Fund. Your voice was heard loud and clear by millions of people living in this country and we honor your life.
Mr. McConnell - Stop feeling that you own the Senate and respond. Your nonchalance to several important issues that this country is facing is hurting us and you need to feel responsible for the inaction.
49
Immaculate Conception Church is also my child's summer camp. This morning, we saw lots of police around the church preparing to attend the memorial service. I'm glad my 8 year old gets a chance to learn more about the legacy of 9-11 first responders.
37
There are few people on this earth who are true heroes.
Luis Alvarez was one of them. Along with the men and women who worked on the World Trade Center pile for all those long months, he gave all he had and in the end, he gave his life. We should continue to be grateful to him and each person he worked alongside.
Mr. Alvarez’s continued activism over the years to gain health benefits for those exposed to the deadly contaminants of “ The pile” was an act of dedication and commitment to those lost before him and those still on the journey.
It was his final act, along with Jon Stewart, that brought many to tears. Appearing before an almost empty hearing room he pled, one last time, for funds to be extended for those affected.
A true act of heroism which must have been most difficult.
One can hope that his appearance was not in vain. That those in Congress who promised to “ never forget “ will not forget as they so often have.
That this heroes words, effort, dedication and love for his country and city will have a lasting effect on all those who come after him.
A true hero.
RIP Luis Alvarez.
80
I have seen Mitch address this issue on television. He seems contemptuous and dismissive - patronizing. He suggests there is no urgency.
He has failed to give a rational or factual reason for the delay in voting.
One might wonder if a reason could be the cost of health care, and if such be the case, then I have a good suggestion: Roll back the tax cuts for the rich. This way the cost of health care for these brave men and women who risked their lives and who are suffering are fully funded.
Or tell Mr. Bone Spurs to cancel the military parade for July 4th, or tell him to stop wasting money traveling to his golf courses.
But of course Mitch, doing that might take having something you lack: Courage.
Not even the Wizard of Oz can help you.
121
@Bfen Thank you, your words are exactly the feelings I have. Millions of dollars to display tanks on the 4th but scarce money to help these heroes.
23
@Ben Well said my friend!! I completely agree!
11
The GOP is all about defense, security and military, waving the flag as if it were the only patriots, and has used 9/11 as the reason for all kinds of additional surveillance (some blanket and unwarranted) until it comes to actually taking care of the human beings (be they veterans, policemen or firefighters) injured as a result of their selfless service.
Or giving them pay and benefits commensurate with their sacrifice.
60
As a person who worked downtown near the Trade Center during and immediately after the Attack, I am a member of the WTC Health Program and am also being treated for several conditions.
I applaud Mr. Alvarez for his selfless service, courage and strength and also applaud Jon Stewart for his ability to bring this to everyone's attention.
Thank you!
97
@Steve
You witnessed the consequences of 9/11 and are paying for your proximity to terror. I hope that your health is well attended to and that your spirits flourish.
6
Rest in peace, Mr. Alvarez, a true hero to the end.
60
Luis Alvarez was a true public servant to the very (untimely and tragic) end. Condolences to his family, friends, fellow officers and fellow 9/11 survivors. His legacy will be eternal.
Mitch McConnell,
That you allowed Mr. Alvarez to go to his grave without having put this legislation to a vote reveals how minuscule a man you are. Are you also not (supposed to be) a public servant? Did his testimony on Capitol Hill not demonstrate the urgency to pass this funding, and make it permanent? Are you not embarrassed to suggest that August is soon enough?
The Senate has an obligation to Mr. Alvarez and his colleagues. Delay is unconscionable.
156
That’s really sad. But what a heroic last act, even though he must have been in a lot of pain.
51
Thank you for your service, Mr. Alvarez. In a sea of human beings who are selfish, ruthless and too busy to care, you stand high on the "pile" of humanity. Rest in peace.
161
Every one of these deaths - and there will be more - should be counted in the toll of 9/11. Those terrorists killed Mr. Alvarez just as surely, if not as quickly, as they killed nearly 3000 people on September 11, 2001.
93
@Rachel I agree. It is beyond the pale that our government works so closely with Saudi Arabia, where the terrorists originated.
27
Rest in peace good sir. Thank you for your true service to us. We can never fully repay the debt we owe to you. And those who have the power to do so won't even try, unless there is something in it for them. We are in a time of promise breaking in this country. I hope that we can change that soon before we lose the soul of our country to greed and corruption.
68
Luis Alvarez, did his service to the nation to last breath. Now it’s our duty to return to him with gratitude. Never forget 9/11. Rest In Peace Luis Alvarez.
64
Beautiful article and tribute to a fallen hero.
51
Sincere gratitude and condolences.
My son was ten years old when 9/11 occurred. It deeply affected him. In addition to his day job, he is a volunteer EMT/firefighter in the state of Delaware.
People like Mr. Alvarez are an example and an inspiration.
Luis Alvarez, you are awesome.
101
Rest In Peace and thank you, Mr. Alvarez.
Also a thanks to John Stewart who has championed this issue from the beginning and is still unwavering.
159
C'mon media - and this means you too NYT. Call McConnell out EVERYDAY till that despicable excuse for a US Senator brings this bill to the floor and gets it passed. If the media harped on this the same way they harp on Biden's shoulder rubbing, these people would have the funding for the health care they need. That they still don't is a crime.
EVERYDAY!
284
Done. Easy to do.
Thanks.
5
A hero in the most American way imaginable. Rest in peace, Mr. Alvarez.
99
