Going to the Swedish Woods to Live an Instagram Fairy Tale

Sweden is lovely, but to really travel back to the time of fairy tales, consider rural Lithuania, where gargantuan stork nests may be seen atop mossy ancient cottages.

Why is the price expressed in euros when written for an American paper? Sweden uses the krona.
PMH (NJ)
Hmmmm.....isn't that just very expensive camping?
Chris Correale (San Francisco)
When I heard how much this costs I was reminded of how Marie Antoinette used to pretend she was a farmer, little make-believe farmhouse and everything..maybe an extreme comparison, but same principle??
RP (NC)
Looks like a moronic waste of money.

'“In the forest, it’s amazing to see how you have food around without having to do anything at all,” Ms. Helbak said.' Does this remind anyone of that clueless Instagrammer who ran something like this in Minnesota and had her cookbook recalled after she published recipes for poison ingredients? The worst.

This may just be a Scandinavian 'thing' for which they have to pay big bucks. In the US and Canada we can have the same sort of experience in our national and provincial parks. I'm under 4 hours from Algonquin and there all you need to get right away from everybody is a canoe and a tent; there are facilities for washing clothes. It's heaven and costs are minimal. The only thing you have to do is clean up after yourself.

If the camp is supposed to reflect a better way of living for us all, why is it priced so that on maybe 5% of the population could afford to participate ? At close to $1000 per night, it looks much like virtue signalling for rich peoples....
Treetop (Us)
@Simon Yes I don't understand how fish and mushrooms cooked over a fire could cost 750 Euros! But it does look like a beautiful place.

“Fat flies swarming over the breakfast table, clouds of gnats at dusk, creeping spiders, buzzing mosquitoes and ferocious little black biting flies...” If suitably clothed, I’d love to take a walk in the forest at Stedsans and even swim in the lake. As for trying to relax with a glass of wine and eating no doubt delicious meals, all the while being eaten alive by insects - not for me.
ECE (Chicago, IL)
You can probably do the same in MN, WI, and MI for way cheaper ; )
rachel (MA)
@ECE and NY, VT, NH, ME, and MA. I wonder how the Adirondack Park Agency feels about over water saunas...
Michael (Copenhagen)
Only Danes?

local lobsters on the charcoal grill remind me of my favourite ever such - shrimp cooked beside me as I sat on the sand, over a portable charcoal grill carried by a beach vendor lady in Nha Trang Vietnam I'm otherwise not a seafood lover, but that dry smoky flavour sold me completely.

Hey, a kickstarter swindler's escape from everything except social media, lobster, european wine, and artifice. And Thoreau gently wept.
Judy (NYC)
750 Euros to stay overnight in a shack in the woods with an outhouse? Rip off. I guess with the right marketing you can sell anything.
MBR (Florida)
For 850/night? No thanks.
Ben P (Austin)
When you have money (to buy someone else's creativity) instead of (your own) creativity.
Federica Fellini (undefined)
the amazing decadence of North Europe (last line of the article): "In 2019, a one-night package for two in a private cabin includes snacks, a six-course dinner with wine pairings, and breakfast for 750 euros". I live in Berlin (lake, sauna, dinner, wine, beer, lake, sauna, cabin, etc... is our daily bread) This Swedish Western FASHION is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

One thing that was confusing was the fish/fishing situation. Some guests took out their fishing rods, yet later meals included flaky white fish brought in from outside. ??

Sign me up before the start-ups take over.

€750/night does not seem inexpensive. To whom does this vacation destination cater?
Jgrauw (Los Angeles)
@Former NYer and Public School Grad 750 Euros is a month's retirement pay for many Europeans..
Luder (France)
Are those arthropods on the grill not crawfish rather than lobsters?
Angster (sweden)
@Luder Crawfish are Fresh water creatures. These are Langoustines,Salt water dwellers.
Mr. Louche (Out of here soon.)
@Luder They are certainly not crawfish, much too large, long, and thin.
BP (Houston TX)
One more way for the rich to spoil yet another pristine environment.
Luder (France)
@BP You and I might think people are foolish to drop lots of money on stuff like this, but I don't see how anything is being spoiled.
erwan (berkeley)
This is utopia at a very steep price. Makes no sense.
Tazza Lenghe (New York)
Great shall be the pseudiosity thereof. The Stedsans site says "With very few, logical eceptions (sic) all ingredients haven’t travelled more than an hour to reach Stedsans. Almost everything was harvested/foraged same day as it is served." but the article mentions biodynamic wines (from other press, these are sourced mainly in Mediterranean countries) and describes a breakfast buffet containing "loaves of Danish rye studded with raisins and apricots, an array of cheeses and yogurt, homemade granola and a warm pot of sprouted porridge'' in which nothing but the yogurt could possibly be either as local or fresh as the claims and an Olive piece on the place describes a "garden" salad dressed with "with fresh figs and toasted hazelnut" and a dessert "with broken pieces of wild cacao bean chocolate and caramelised brittle-like clusters of homemade marzipan and nuts". Sigh.
Stewart Dean (Kingston, NY)
Very, very wholesome and image-y...but one thing: this is summer yet everyone seems to be dressed for warmth: puffy and technical warmth jackets. How cold is it?
Henry Parsons (Oakland, CA)
I can't wait until "fit for Instagram" is no longer used as a raison d'etre.
PL (Sweden)
A lot of jet fuel must have been burned to bring those people from every continent but Antarctica.
DAK (CA)
My Boy Scout camp experience adjusted for 2019 dollars cost one tenth as much and was a lot more fun. The expense of this activity makes nothing about this experience sustainable.

Doe Bay on Orcas Island did this 35 years ago.

Really fun article and would love to visit!
