Watching Poetic Justice now. Rest in Peace, Mr Singleton.

Why do we lose these precious artists whilst con men flourish?

I was looking for people who inspired Singleton. James Baldwin has to be there.

His films will mark a guidepost to many, who were not always the central character of a movie. His viewpoint was to include a new voice to cinema.

John Singleton made his mark on the world, helping us all to understand how to make it a better place. To his loved ones: I know your heart is broken, but be proud that John was a truly great artist.

A gifted artist. Few have rendered such spot-on depictions of Black life in America.

When I heard the news of his passing, I was reminded that he was not only a storyteller and poet, John was a young black man using his skills and artistry to evoke change before the pre-Oscars so-white era. This man was the 'first black Director' at the age of 23, in 1991 (just 28 years ago) to be nominated. How unfortunate. Rest in power, Mr. Singleton. Thank you for your contribution to the arts and for allowing us to see through your lens of black consciousness and thought.

Poetic Justice is also important in that it shows a black, gay man receiving news that he's been infected with HIV - and in response he's treated with love and tenderness by those around him. That scene hit during the height of the AIDS epidemic, which was ravaging communities around the United States. Singleton broke ground with that brief portrayal, very important ground and that scene today still moves me to tears.

Major loss, major work, the best of what the US can be. His exploration of the AA past and present is path breaking, RIP

RIP, James. He brought so much to so many of us.

Brilliant Director gone too soon . Who he remained so silent after all those brilliant movies, or could it be we did not look for him in this fast moving world. My last respect to John Singleton with my heartfelt condolences.
