More identity politics. When will the Dems realize that most Americans (other than extreme liberal Dems) could care less about the gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. of their elected leaders? What we need are competent humans who now how to govern and will stop pandering.

NYC is long overdue to break the glass ceiling. Quinn's prior attacks on fellow female candidates cannot be tolerated. Helen Rosenfeld is well liked, uniter! Tish James Cumbo Melinda Katz, Cyn Nixon Wendy Long and even Viverito - we can do this!

OK, so what's wrong with men?
Joan (New York)
@ManhattanWilliam Nothing that a good dose of humility and a course of awareness and sensitivity to others can't cure.

When subjects get too controversial to sing about, best to stick with the weather - for tunes, anyway. “Zip up the windbreaker. Winds gusting over 40 miles” Tune of “Matchmaker” Windbreaker, windbreaker, Break up the wind. It’s sounds so strong, I am chagrined Windbreaker, windbreaker, I zipped you up. To break down that awful wind My Mama, she’s down in Boca With Papa ’til they fly back in May. And me, I sit with my mocha And hope against hope not to blow away. Windbreaker, windbreaker, Year after year You’ve kept me warm, you’ve earned my trust. Though I can hear that the wind is robust You’ll break up each gusty gust!

It's embarrassing that New York City has never known a woman to hold executive power. It's outrageous. It's disgusting. I will not stand for it another election cycle.

I was always shocked that Ruth Messinger did not beat Rudy Giuliani when he ran for his second term in '97. It was a loss for our city that connects directly to the current moral loss in our country.

I want a woman to run for mayor because I can't believe we've never had a woman mayor.

Everyone who remembers Christine Quinn as the once respected community activist she was -- before transforming into the shameless self-promoter she became in the City Council during the Bloomberg administration, might very well think twice before considering to vote for her as Mayor.
Caroline (Brooklyn)
@N. Smith "shameless self-promoter". Those three words describe every single man who has been mayor, is mayor, and is thinking about running for mayor. You ever think that you have different reactions to how politicians advocate for themselves based on their gender?
Freddie (New York NY)
@N. Smith - re "before transforming into the shameless self-promoter she became in the City Council" Back in the Quinn-de Blasio-Weiner race, everyone was doing Anthony Weiner jokes and spoofs, so I tried this on Quinn: "Brush Up Your Speaker" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lriKy_Coo5g [Coincidental that in 2013, I used the line "the cause that trumps 'em all." Was The Donald's candidacy in the air already then?] This was the Times story. https://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/06/21/quinn-goes-to-bat-for-theater-troupe-over-parking-fees/

Ah, but those who thought Quinn shameless and instead voted for Mr. de Blasio got themselves an ambitious grifter -- along with his wife. Think Maimonides Hospital and the six-figure job absolutely created for Chirlane . . . .

I've been thinking since the successful fall 2018 results that the number of women who want to run for political office may not have decreased overall, but the climate is right for women to try for Congress and other national offices. Speaking of the office of Mayor - why is Bill de Blasio able to do his workout just fine when on the road, but suddenly when in New York, he HAS to use that specific Brooklyn gym.

2 early morning reactions; 1) I don't know why she would want to run after the raw deal she was handed last time, but I'd love to see Christine Quinn as mayor! 2) Best news today--Zagat back in print. Oh, and go see What the Constitution Means to Me.

"What's behind the spike in murders?" You've got to be kidding. After a bit of a hiatus, I am hearing loud radios again -- and often -- here in Flatbush. Double-parked cars hanging out. No doubt advertising.

Correction R.E. Who wants to be Mayor of NYC. by Azi Paybarah: Kathy Sheehan is the Mayor of Albany NY.
N. Smith (New York City)
@L. Narducci Albany is not NEW YORK CITY.
Lifelong Reader (New York)
@L. Narducci He wrote about the five largest cities. Albany is the sixth largest.

Christine Quinn is NOT a viable candidate for any elective office b/c too many of us remember how she caved to Bloomberg's demand for an (illegal) third term as mayor. Quinn *should have been* the gate-keeper there, but instead she decided that the voters (who, in 2 separate referendums, had decided on term limits) were really not that important - certainly not important enough for Bloomberg to have to obey the law! And she rolled over and gave Bloomberg what he wanted. I hope she's happy to have sacrificed her own political aspirations for a man whose vision of NYC is becoming clearer by the day: "Manhattan as a playground only for the super-wealthy (ex: Hudson Yards). All others need not apply."
Freddie (New York NY)
@L, at the time, I found Speaker Quinn's office to be like a reader of scripts at a theater, always looking for the reasons to turn down someone's cause to winnow the pile down ti a manageable amount, yet going for the cause that could attract attention. For Speaker Quinn, they seem to have spent more money's worth of time keeping free rehearsal space for the theater group "Shakespeare in the Parking Lot" than the rent they non-profit was being asked to pay! As was pointed out then: What's the Speaker's office claiming as a victory, that non-profit theater groups should not have to pay rent for rehearsal space? Boggled the mind. But Bill de Blasio around then was being an effective, charismatuic camera hog as Public Advocate being upset that Bono and the Edge's "SpiderMan" was not giving a discount for previews, an unfinished product! As silly as that cause was, since preview discounts had been going long gone at that point and left to the market's supply and demand, Bill got coverage among people who really didn't know who he was. (Notice that in his Mayoral years, preview prices have gone from $120 then, to [using round numbers] a gazillion dollars - but boy, did he seem like a fighter. Ms. Quinn has been great, though, both conveying information when needed, and also arguing for what she believes in on TV. You can tell when she's arguing to take the side of a debate for the needs of a CNN segment, vs. (watch out!) when she's on fire about a subject.

Wish we could have Bloomberg back.
Ken (Staten Island)
@B. I was happy that Bloomberg won, to show that he was an outsider - a businessman - who could run the city. However, in his maneuvering for a third term, he showed himself to be nothing more than a politician (and I use that in the worst sense of the word's meaning).
