I hope to live long enough to watch president Trump's funeral. Won't the speeches honoring him be well worth listening to?

Never cared for McCaine myself, but my reasons are clear.
Legacy of his father got him into the Academy, even though he would not have personally qualified.
Fool-heartiness as pilot got him shot-down in Vietnam; and he also endangered other pilots aboard the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal.
Political positions were anti-women and anti-gays.
Voted to impeach President Clinton, even though he himself dumped his first wife to marry a much younger second spouse, Cindy.
Desperate for victory, he made an unbelievably unqualified Sarah Palin his presidential running mate.
He sought with other GOP’ers to rid President Obama of any semblance of success via total non-cooperation.

Bone spurs don't go away without surgery. If The Donald had them, he still does. So show us the X-rays. If not he's just the cheap liar we all suspect he is, disparaging the memory of a man far better than himself.

With his malign cunning, Trump understands that McCain was disliked by Democrats because he usually aligned himself on most votes with Republicans. At the same time, because he was considered the "maverick of the Senate," and cast the deciding no vote on repealing the ACA, many on the right disliked him. Trump's castigation of McCain seeks to unite those at both ends of the political spectrum.

Please help honor John S. McCain for his 60 years of dedicated service to the United States, as well as his personal courage. Please support the petition to posthumously award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/award-presidential-medal-freedom-posthumously-senator-john-s-mccain-us-navy-captain-ret

Trevor Noah's best story was the news report (not fake news) that residents of Tijuana were stealing the comcertina wire (to secure their homes) that the US is using to secure the border wall. "Mexicans are stealing the wall!!!" Hysterical!!!

Two noteworthy deaths…
John S. McCain: August 29, 1936 - August 25, 2018 (from cancer)
Presidential Dignity: April 30, 1789 - March 20, 2019 (after a prolonged illness)
22
@S Jones
I'd probably amend the date of Dignity's death to January 20, 2017, after a shocking and unexpected accident.
44
@GHD
...after a not shocking or accidental display of undemocratic 245-year-old ignorant, predictable electoral misogyny.
Ask the next generation of girls how they view the country today and their future in America. The brutal, ignorant war games just go on and on. America has been a disastrous idiotic culture war mess since 1980 and was fairly traumatic for most of the country in the 200 years prior to that. A key question all Americans ought ponder is why the one nation that once held the most promise for a better day, optimism, and a high quality of life is now at the bottom of the happiness heap and doesn't seem to care about either that tumble or the causes. Job One seems to be just more internecine warfare, violence and degenerate psychopathy.

He's obviously trying to distract us from something he doesn't want us to pay attention to. I wonder what it is this time.

@Ellen Valle
1) His budget, which cuts billions from Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security
2) The Mueller investigation
3) The fact that he does NOTHING

Trump's obsessive public ranting about McCain makes it clear that there is something very wrong going on with Trump.

@Linda "Out, damned spot!"

Bullies are born of cowardice. They are afraid...of losing, of being shown up, but mostly of being revealed for who they truly are. And because of those fears, the bully will always, always choose as a victim someone who cannot fight back.
Trump is by every possible measure, a bully. And anyone who has ever witnessed a grade school playground can see him for who he is and can see what he fears. Because inside, he knows he is less than what this nation deserves.
And who is less able to fight back than a dead man? What better target for a bully?
Except that in this case, even in death, John McCain is showing himself to be a better, more capable and more honorable man than Trump can ever be. And Trump can't let it go because there's no way for McCain to lose at this point and Trump can't stand it.
It's so terribly sad to watch. Mostly, I feel sorry for this nation, that it must suffer through such a lack of leadership.
51
Trump vs McCain reminds me of Clint Eastwood debating an empty chair at the Republican National Convention. Without saying a word, the chair won by making Eastwood look foolish and childish. Without saying a word, McCain is making Trump look...foolish and childish.

Well, Trump is correct in pointing out there are differences in human beings, especially in politicians. Trump for example is an absurd idiot. That was made quite clear in the honors paid John McCain following his passing. Trump on the other hand has befriended Americas long time enemies and dangerous grounds he does not understand, well John McCain was a hero even as he could have had his freedom after capture to support the welfare of the remaining prisoners. Can you imagine Trump doing that? Right answer.
24
How come Trump did not get booed the very minute he said that? Shame on them! How many members of the military were present? Dead heroes cannot fight back.
42
I’m saying this as a widow of a man who served in the US Navy for 22 years and the mother of an active duty Marine serving overseas. The belittling of a dead war hero is disgusting to me and I am appalled that more republicans are not standing up and finding their voice to condemn his insecurities and jealousy over a dead man . My heart breaks for the Mc Cain family and this country.

Why did the Trump McCain Feud get renewed?
March 18, 2019: New details about the late Sen. John McCain’s role in distributing a salacious 2016 dossier involving President Donald Trump were revealed in recently unsealed court filings and have unleashed a new round of Trump fury against McCain seven months after the senator’s death.
The explosive dossier contained unverified information and, among other things, claimed the Russians had compromising information on Trump.
David Kramer, who had known McCain since his days at the State Department, is an expert on Russia and is involved with the McCain Institute for International Leadership. He was deposed in December 2017 as part of a legal battle waged by a Russian businessman Aleksej Gubarev over BuzzFeed’s publication of the dossier.
Kramer’s deposition reveals that he circulated the dossier to multiple news organizations, a revelation that until now, had not been disclosed. Kramer's deposition lays out what happened.
McCain directed Kramer to travel to London to meet with Steele.
Kramer acknowledged during the deposition that he gave a copy of the dossier to reporters at BuzzFeed News, McClatchy news service, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio.

So two years of harassment of Trump by the media was brought on by McCain publishing a false and fabricated report. I wonder why Trump is upset.

The republicans who have not spoken out against this poor excuse of trash talk about one of their fellow senators are deserving of the talk being made on him. Stand up, have ethics. Oh no, that’s right you’re the new breed of GOP. You don’t stand up for anything or anyone. This man could talk about your family and you would not stand up for them, he actually has done that. Shameful!
25
Saw it, excellent bit!
Anyone remember the old High School instructional films, or the Army basic training films, dumbed down and simplified to the point that even the dimmest bulb in the fixture could understand?
That's what watching an unedited 5 minute section of any Trump speech is like;
'OK gang, this is what a self destructive, narcissistic psychotic is like. Never vote for one of these people.'
(Huge laughing cat emoji here!)

I admit that the Swift Boaters are the first thought that pops into my mind every time I see a license plate in Texas honoring a recipient of the Purple Heart. I hate that, and the doubt the Swift Boaters cast over all Purple Heart recipients. Still, I honor the sacrifice they made for our country, and thank them. The Swift Boaters never changed my opinion of John Kerry. And I wonder who honors our country by casting doubt, if not outright derision, on those who did. Why does Trump attack those who serve in our Military, specifically for their service?
24
For those of us that do not care for Trump, this is just par for the course. It doesn’t make me dislike him any more. For his supporters, this could be a bridge too far. The more a draft dodger criticizes a war hero that saved their healthcare, the more they see his true character.
It doesn’t change my mind about Trump, but it could change his core supporters.
51
@Jane K "...but it could change his core supporters."
From your lips to God's ear...
19
@Jane K
I think it's highly unlikely that core Trump supporters watch the likes of Noah and Colbert or read the NYTimes. It takes a real commitment to ignorance to be a core Trump supporter. Fortunately for these people "education (of any sort - even comedy) produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence" (all over the US of A.). Oh, dear! It's already done that, hasn't it? My apologies to Lady Bracknell.

I wonder what % of the people know that McCain barely made it thru the Naval Academy? He was "Last" ( lowest ) in his class. He might not have graduated , but having 2 previous family members who were Admirals probably sure could have had "pulled some strings" !
McCain was a "Maverick" Republican and did not always vote the way the majority of the Party did.
1
@Robert N. Burns McCain was fifth or fourth from the bottom of his class, not last.
In any event, what is far more important than his or anyone's school history (and this true for President Trump as well) are his accomplishments and values expressed in his adult life. As many Republicans and Democrats have said, in that regard the late Sen. McCain beats out Trump by more than a mile.
42
@Robert N. Burns
So what? He still served the United States and overcame challenges probably too horrible for you to imagine. McCain would be the first to admit his many human failings and the likely pressure he felt to follow his family's traditions. Again, he served our country. Trump did not, and, given his conduct as president, Trump is still not serving the United States with even a fraction of the dignity, honor, and courage McCain devoted to the Navy and Congress ("Maverick" or not). If Trump had an ounce of class, which he does not, Trump would say nothing about McCain. Trump is a very weak, very insecure bully. It is time for all patriotic Americans to marginalize Trump as much as possible until he leaves office. It's a shame that 60 million voters were foolish. (Maybe you were one of them.) But 66 million voters were not.
35
@Robert N. Burns
Tell me, I'm interested, what are you trying to say?
9
trump will say absolutely anything to accomplish his goal. It matters not how vile it is. He doesn't care. I suspect this is all about distracting from the comments associated with the New Zealand shooter. Both his admiration for trump as a white identity cohort and also, maybe mostly, his comment on trumps lack of policy and leadership skills. That is not something trump wants his base to be thinking about.
23
Whether real or perceived Trump is terrified of losing. The president deep down believes McCain whipped him in life and whipped him in death and he simply can't accept his own assessment of having his behind handed to him.
84
I can’t believe that all of those tank factory workers in Ohio stood mutely by while Trump continued to denigrate John McCain at his recent “rally”. Weren’t any of them veterans themselves? Sure your job is important, but there are limits! And they seem to get stretched daily with this narcissistic hypocrite.
21
My father served in Vietnam. I was a rebellious teenager, never voted republican in my life. But I'd sure vote McCain today.
