  1. We believe this to be some sort of protest in the 50s of the use of radioactive weapons. The people might be wearing old hazmat suits as a way to show how all people will be dressed in future if nuclear warfare continues.

  2. @Dimi and Camilla What makes you think that this happened in the '50s? What clues in the picture lead you to come to this conclusion?

  3. @Julia M After doing some research I found the movie the seachase came out in 1955

  4. @Dimi and Camilla what tells you that this photo was taken in the 50's?

  5. It shows an old picture (1950s), due to the black and white printing. The age is also suggested because John Wayne was a famous movie star during this time period, and the cars are most likely from this time period. It could be a form of protest which could be introduced by the police, in New York. It doesn't look like its attracting too many people, as most are continuing walking by. Its probably a protest about the police or by the police.

  6. @Felix, Alice Why do you think this protest that was introduced by the police? What tells you it was about the police or by the police?

  7. Good morning, @Felix, Alice. Thank you for sharing your observations and thoughts with us today, and thanks, @Claire for your response! It sounds like you're paying close attention to details throughout this picture, like the cars and the name "John Wayne" on the left, and you're wondering if this image is set in the past, potentially the 1950's. @Claire is focusing on your comment that this might be a protest by police or about police. What do you see that makes you say this might have something to do with the police? Keep up the discussion by clicking 'reply'!

  8. We think that this image is taken in New York, due to the various buildings and advertisements. The time period is the 1950s, due to the old fashion cars and the lettering outside of the movie theater. We believe this is some sort of protest due to the procession, and all of the people taking part are wearing partially see through tarps over there heads; and they may be protesting unjust changes to their work conditions.

  9. This takes place in 1955, New York City, as we can see from the movie board, where it says the sea chase. There are three people wearing plastic coats, and one is sitting on the car. No one cares about the people because the pedestrians are just walking past. We think they are protesting about something. Due to the fact there are only a few people doing it and the people doing it are wearing clothes to symbolize what they are protesting about.

  10. This photo appears to be from sometime in 1955 (seeing as the movie that was currently playing in the theater in the left premiered in 1955); maybe taken in New York. Could be a rally/protest against something that took place in that time. There is a crowd at the back with police officers standing guard at the front (wearing ponchos for some reason...?)

  11. It is around the mid 1950s due to the cars and the movie that is showing "The Sea Chase" came out around that time as well. The three people wearing sheets over their heads have what look like police hats so it could possibly be a strike. As well as this, there are cars behind them that are blocking the road so it could be a protest.

  12. In this picture, there are three people covered in plastic ponchos in he middle of the street in new York. We think New York because there is a big Pepsi cola sign and the structures of the buildings look like their in New York style. This picture was taken place in 1955 since the Sea Chase Movie starring John Wayne came out in that year. It could be a protest in the middle of the street while there are people getting ready for an event. One of the guys leaning by the car is wearing a black suit with a white carnation so it is a wedding in the background. It could also be a street rally. It is in America because there is an American flag hanging on one of the nearby buildings.

  13. @Illy and Ava What do you think the street rally could be about? What do you think these people are protesting?

  14. @Illy and Ava, thank you for your comment this morning! And I appreciate you digging deeper with your response, @Claire. It sounds like @Illy and Ava, you're agreeing with others who think this might be set in a specific historic time period. @Mg and Ep and @Jordan and Maya all focus on the text on the left that says "The Sea Chase", and are using that as a clue that this is set in 1955. You're also paying attention to details you see in the background, to come to the conclusion that this is set in New York, agreeing with @Indraneel & Paul. You also have a different observation about the clothes than others have had - you think the specific occasion might be a wedding, because you notice someone in a suit with a flower. @Claire, you are wanting to know what the protest might be about. Let's return to the image. What more can we find?

  15. We assume that this picture was taking in June at 1955. The people under the plastice sheet are assumingly police men. We also assume that the picture was taken in New York City

  16. @Mg and Ep What makes you assume these things? What clues in the picture helped you reach your conclusion?

  17. @Mg and Ep, thank you for your comment this morning! @Julia M, thanks for your reply. I appreciate seeing you engage with each others' thoughts! @Mg and Ep - your close looking at this picture has allowed you to make a couple of assumptions. You are thinking a lot about the time and place in which this might be set, and thinking about the identity of the figures in the foreground. @Julia M - it sounds like you're asking @Mg and Ep to root their ideas in visual evidence from the image. You're asking, "what do you see that makes you say that?" Let's keep looking together - what more can we find?

  18. @Mg and Ep what tells you that the people underneath the sheets are policemen?

  19. This picture was taken somewhere in New Your City, because there are building that look like the style of buildings in NYC and there are a lot of people. The picture is taken sometime in 1955 because it is black and white, and The Sea Chaser came out then. There are three people in the front of the picture with what looks like hazmat suits or ponchos. These people could be protesting nuclear warfare. They could be showing what would happen if a nuclear war started. They could also be protesting racial discrimination and covering their skin to prevent people from discriminating them. However, they are not getting much attention. People are walking right by them and there are no cars around them.

  20. I see some people with bags over their head. They are on a large street. They might be protesting something because most other people are not wearing bags. This looks like it might be in the mid nineteen hundreds because the movie theater is advertising a John Wayne movie. One of the people wearing a bag in sitting on a car. The other two are walking. I can't tell if the car is moving. Because of the time period, these people could be protesting racial segregation.

  21. This picture seems to have been taken in New York around the 1950s, as that is when the advertised movie "The Sea Chase" came out. It depicts 3 men covered in ponchos, 2 of them walking in the street and one sitting on a car. They may be protesting, as the people in the backround are not covering their heads. If they were covering their faces because of something in the air or another environmental factor, everyone would be doing it. These three men might be protesting something like racial prejudice, as that was a big issue in the 50s and 60s.

  22. This picture looks dated back to the 1950's, there are 2 people standing in the street with what looks like plastic bags over them, everything in this picture is also vintage and the place it looks like it was taken in is New York City, it looks like a protest to change a big cause

  23. in the picture it seems to be taken in an early 1900s era most likely 1950, due to the old car types and the picture being in black and white. it looks to be a protest of some sort as some people in the picture are wearing some type of clothing. most likely to show what there protesting about.

  24. @miles Where do you think this was taken?

  25. This picture looks like its from the 1950's.In this picture there's some type of protest going on and there's a lot of people in the background. The building's give you a picture that it's like in a city. The picture is also in black and white seems like it's from the older days.'The sea chase' didn't come out until the 50's so the picture must be from then also describing the clothes there wearing.

  26. @madelin whats good

  27. @madelin Good observations. What do you think the people could be protesting?

  28. This picture is in the 1950's. It's in New York City because there are big buildings and a movie theater. There are three people with their faces covered protesting in front of a movie theater staring John Wayne. The street is most likely closed because there are people walking in the street.

  29. @Heather Why do you think the people in the picture are covering their faces? Why might the street be closed? Also, try and find evidence to support your claim that this picture was taken in the 1950s.

  30. @Heather New York i a possibility, but there were other cities with big buildings and movie theaters in 1950. What other cities could this be?

  31. In New York City, 3 people are in ponchos. It could be cloudy though the picture's in black and white. Some large crowds are watching them. I think in this picture, they're protesting.

  32. @Chris What do you think they could be protesting?

  33. Morning, everyone, and welcome to ‘What’s Going On in This Picture?’. If it’s your first time here, welcome, and if you are a returning commenter, welcome back! Educators will be facilitating the discussion all morning, and through our conversation, we'll have a chance to push our individual understandings deeper.

  34. it seems that the picture was taken sometime in the 40s of 50s,in a booming city, I see people in plastic bags? Not sure what thats about.

  35. The picture looks to be taken around the 50's, and it looks like it could possibly be a protest. Because of what they're wearing, they could possibly be K.K.K. members as they're covering their faces and the top of their outfits are pointed and they only have eye holes, they also look to be blocking traffic.

  36. @McKinnley - thank you for joining this morning's discussion. I appreciate hearing you wonder about this image and stay curious about what you think might be going on. You are focusing on the people in the foreground of the picture, thinking that the people with face coverings might be part of a protest. You agree with @Chris and @Christoff who wonder if they might be protesting. You're then presenting a new idea, and connecting these people to the American hate group, the K.K.K. because of details you notice in their specific outfits. What more can we find? Let's keep looking together!

  37. This picture appears to be from the past because of the way the cars look, the buildings' design, and the people's outfits. The people who are covered in bags might be police officers because of their hats. We are wondering why the people are covered, and what they are doing in the middle of a busy, city street.

  38. @Ms.C and Ms. A's ELA - welcome to this morning's discussion! We appreciate you being here and thinking through this image together. It sounds like you're thinking first of all about the setting of this picture, asserting it might be set in the past. It also sounds like you have some questions about this image, and you're curious about the foreground. You're wondering why these people might be all covered up, and it sounds like you are surprised to see them in the middle of a busy street. What do you see that makes you say their hats tell you that these people could be police?

  39. @Ms.C and Ms. A's ELA what about the coverings on the peoples' outfits lead you to believe that they are police officers?

  40. This picture is black and white, so I believe it was taken in the 1900's. This was taken in a big city in America, because you can see the American flag on the building. I am guessing it is New York. I think they are protesting something, but I am not sure what.

  41. @Jenna I agree that this picture was taken in the 1900s, but what else leads you to believe that? Are there specific details in the picture that could support this claim? And why do you think the people in the picture are protesting?

  42. This picture takes place in 1950's New York City due to the timing of the Pepsi Cola logo and the movie depicted on the movie theater. The main focus of this picture appears to be some sort of parade or protest with men who appear to be police officers wearing tarps with clear surfaces near their center. This is also reinforced by the fact that the street is closed. The background however suggests that maybe these men are wearing ponchos due to impending weather, and that is supported by the fact that no cars, signs, or ponchos have a definite glare from the sun. So after gathering and examining all of the evidence I have come to the following conclusion. In 1950's (most likely '55) Three police officers walk along a closed street wearing ponchos due to impending weather and are warning citizens to stay indoors.

  43. @Evan, thank you for sharing your thoughts and your thought process today. I hear you looking very closely at some really fine details all over this picture, and from those details you're actually reaching a couple of conclusions and thinking them over with us. We appreciate this process of thinking it all through! It sounds like you might be agreeing with others about the setting of this image. You think this might be New York, in specifically the year 1955. It also sounds like at first you agreed with others, like @Jenna and @McKinley, who thought this might be showing a potential parade or protest, because the street appeared to be closed. However, now, it sounds like you're agreeing with @Ms.C and Ms. A's ELA, and thinking the cloaked figures are instead police officers. You have a different reading - you think they might be giving a warning to others about some impending, ominous weather. Let's keep looking together. What more can we find?

  44. This picture looks like took it around 1955's in US , some people are covered thier body with bags according to protest ,also the picture shows it's belongs to long time that could be people want to change some law ,but I am not sure .

  45. This picture seem like people in downtown of america. they try to make movie or they doing protes of something. i think that's happened in the 1925 or 1950s because the picture seem black and white and the old cars.

  46. This picture is very weird... It almost looks like its raining out and people are putting bags on their head so they don't get wet. Based on the image I can tell that this was a picture from a long time ago. It looks like the people in this picture support mummification if you ask me. In conclusion I came to the inference that there is a protest occurring or a parade of some sorts debating on something that the general public doesn't agree on. I can tell that that this is a well populated area.

  47. @Garrett, thanks for your comment today. I appreciate hearing you think through this picture, even though it sounds like you're still curious about a couple parts you might not have the answers to. I hear you wondering specifically about the outfits worn by people in the foreground. You're thinking, on the one hand, they might be used for rain cover. You're also referencing mummification, and suggesting these people might even support that. You're also concluding this might be part of a protest. I wonder if you could tell us more about a specific thought you had. What do you see that makes you say they might support mummification?

  48. I think I have protested in America in the past. The police have an objection to the state system. Because there are no police around the protesters, I think they are police. This goes back to 1950 and happened in the center of the city.

  49. This is a protest during the 1940's. where they are protesting the war by wearing bags over there head symbolizing a soldier suffocating soldier.with people just walking by not caring about the protest.this happened in New York city as the John wayne sea chase was playing also protesters hopping on cars to stop traffic.

  50. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us this morning, @Vittorio Lombardi. You are agreeing with others that this might be a protest. I also hear you presenting a new idea - these people might be protesting a war because they have a resemblance to soldiers who might be suffocating. What do you see that makes you say they might be symbolizing suffocating soldiers? And what more can we find?

  51. It seems like they are in New York City. The picture seems to be in the 50's because it is in black and white. There are very old vintage cars. Looks like there is a protest going on. People fighting for rights.

  52. in this picture people are marching i say that bc it might be a holiday what esle is going on is people are going in the movie place bc people going into look at a movie

  53. This picture happened in America in the past because cars are old and buildings as well, I think it is that some people protested against the president or the government, and they wore certain clothes to know from their uniforms.

  54. @Randa Alwardeh, thank you for looking at this week's image and for sharing your thoughts with us! It sounds like you are looking at the setting of this image, thinking it might be set in America in the past. I also hear you possibly agreeing with @Rachel R and @eli who think there might be a protest or march going on. Perhaps you could tell us more. What do you see that makes you say these people might be protesting?

  55. I belive this picture is taken in 1900th because it is black and white and the sigh of move theater . People who walking in front of the car looks like police officers who protested about ther safety because what they wearing over their body.

  56. i think this picture is back in a days when it was on 1955 if look at the cars it is an other thing that can support my claim also the picture is showing some the flag of america and the three people on the mask are the actors whom are shooting for a movie. the reason i said it is a movie is because of the poster on the left corner of the streat showing the name of the movie and a famous actor called jonh wayne.

  57. Thank you for your comment this morning, @abdiaziz! It sounds like you're noting several things about this image: the overall time in which it's set, as well as what might be happening in this specific scene. It sounds like you might be offering us with a new idea this morning, connecting what you think might be a movie theatre on the left with the people dressed up in the foreground - you think they might be actors in the movie. What do you see that makes you say perhaps these people might be actors in the movie that you see advertised on the left?

  58. I think the picture takes placer in 1945's, USA. because of the flag appears in this picture, and the style of the cars (classic). also as I know John Wayne was the most famous actor in this period of time. So I think it is a company making a film about him, and the people who covered by bags maybe police officers controlling something.

  59. i think what is going on is that they are in hollywood and there is a storm going on and that is why they are wearing a bag on there bodys!!!!!!

  60. in this pic there are three men in a music video. And that they are in a popular street in the city. It looks like its from the 1950s. By the looks of the cars behind them. the bags could represent the hiding their identity.

  61. Thank you for your comment this morning, @Luke! It sounds like you have a similar reading of this picture as @abdiaziz - you both think the people in the foreground might be actors. @abdiaziz thinks they're in a movie, and @Luke, you think they might be in a music video. What do you see that makes you say that?

  62. police officers walking in the street. They are walking in the middle of the street with cool rain coats. The raincoats are probably bullet proof. Seems like they are driving someone important around. Probably someone like me. or it could be a parade like evan said.

  63. Police officers are rioting on the streets.

  64. @Jayden - thank you for sharing your thoughts today. It sounds like you agree with @Justine and @JK who think the figures in the foreground might be police officers. You're wondering if they might even be rioting in the streets. What do you see that makes you say they might be police officers?

  65. @Jayden What leads you to believe that the men rioting on the streets are police officers?

  66. I see the pictures, somepoeple crossing on the road.I think they are films in middle on road because the name of behind them. Also I see three men covered their face with plastic back, and one of them sitting on the car and two standing beside fathermore they are films in the city. That is my opinions.

  67. What I think is going on in this picture is in the 1950's, 1955 to be precise because the movie The Sea Chase that's shown in background movie theater was released in 1955. The main idea of this picture is that police officers are wearing these giant raincoats to prepare for the coming storm so the other people in the area may prepare and get ready for it.

  68. This picture is in the past from in the 90's somewhere at USA from what i can see they are shooting a movie or a video because of their costumes and people are walking in the street as nothing going on this is what usually happen .

  69. This picture shows three people wearing large garments over their clothes. One of them is sitting on a car and the other two are in the street. I think the people wearing the tarp-like objects are policemen, because of the outline of their hats I can see underneath their outerwear. After conducting further research I can conclude that this picture was taken sometime in 1955, because the movie listed on the movie theater came out in that year, and the type of cars shown in the picture, show me that this is not a modern street sight. The policemen are wearing tarps to protect themselves from a harmful chemical in the air and are attempting to tell citizens to stay indoors and away from the poisonous toxins, which I can infer by the policemen's outfits, and the fact that they stopped the city traffic.

  70. Hooded men march down a wide four- or five-lane street. Two men wear what appears to be modern or northern kkk garb march in the fore ground, while another man rides atop the hood of a car, perhaps in New York City. I say this is in New York because the high buildings and wide streets remind me of the City's streets. Because the men are wearing pointed hoods that resemble KKK hoods with plastic see-thru face shields, I wondered it this were a modern, weather-proof KKK outfit, perhaps for bigots and racists in the northeastern section of the country. I also notice a popular movie is showing. I say this because John Wayne and Lana Turner, two very popular stars, are featured on the billboard above the entrance to a movie theater. They are two popular stars, and there seems to be a long line forming for tickets, indicating there are many fans who hold these two dear. Further, I notice that beneath the hoods, the men seem to have flat caps, like soldiers or policemen. This makes me wonder if perhaps those hooded capes are meant to protect them from rainy weather.

  71. In this picture, it looks almost like is could be a parade, there are very few cars on the road of what looks like a big city like Chicago (Admiral Television Appliances), but nobody is paying attention to the "marchers". The people covering their heads look like they are wearing ponchos of some sort, but why? Everyone else outside looks like they are enjoying their sunny day. These people look like they could be protesting the Cold War, because they are showing that they wouldn't be able to breathe if America was struck with a nuclear weapon. I can tell this because "The Sea Chase" was first shown in 1955- the middle of the Cold War- and because Admiral Television Appliances was a company found in the 1950s in Chicago.

  72. @Christina I like this idea! It is very well thought out.

  73. in this picture i see 2 homeless people with bags on there heads a movie theater and a car

  74. @Devin What makes you say the people wearing bags are homeless?

  75. 1955

  76. in this picture looks like the 50s era and i believe it is when the white people and African Americans were not to be together

  77. It looks like a parade and the people are wearing some type of protection, like a spit guard.

  78. @Brookelynne well it’s not a parade ,because if it would have been a parade the people would have not moved around, they would have just been standing attention just like always what people do in a parade.

  79. i think its the 1950s. i say this because the picture is in black and white. they are also wearing a weird type of poncho.

  80. @Marie Why do you think the three men are wearing ponchos? What would be the purpose of wearing one in this specific picture?

  81. it looks like the 50s an might be a parade newyork

  82. there is a parade and the cops are wearing spit grads

  83. @ja'mya i like this theory

  84. @ja'mya What do you think the purpose of the parade is? Do you have an idea of why the police men are wearing what they are wearing?

  85. 1955 cop patrol cops walking around and cop car in the background nothing??

  86. it is the cold war and they are guarding the cars in the parade. They are wearing spit guards.

  87. Thank you for your comments so far, everyone! I hear a lot of curiosity about this picture. @Sayed feels like a protest might be pertinent to this specific time, but isn’t sure what the protest might be about. @Jenna and @madelin agree. @aloe recognizes people might be wearing plastic bags, but is still wondering about the reason for this surprising outfit. @Julia M is curious about whether the cars are moving or not. @Christina thinks this might be a parade, and is wondering why they might be covering their heads. If you are also curious about this picture, or have questions, let’s keep looking together! We so appreciate you thinking through this picture with each other, because through each of our differing interpretations, we can help each other look at this in new ways. What more can we find?

  88. In this picture i see i see people with bags over their head and it looks like they are in Hollywood in the 50's because they have old fashion cars

  89. We thought the two people standing in the front were police officers, because it appears they are wearing caps and uniforms.

  90. @Michael I think they are in New York

  91. @Michael I like your comment cause I also thought about that

  92. Thanks for this discussion, folks! It sounds like you agree, @Michael and @That’s true,me two I thought about that, that the people in the foreground might be police officers . @Jeniffer is adding that this might be set in New York. @Jeniffer, what do you see that makes you say that? And as a group, what more can we find?

  93. This picture looks like it was from the 50s it looks like there having a parade and it looks like its in a big city.I also can see that they have bags over there head and some are riding on cars it looks like everyone is walking in the same direction. Looks like there may be a movie theater or something like that next to where there walking it looks like its a nice day but they could be wearing the bags because maybe it was raining out so they put those on.

  94. they Seem to be on strike, i did some research and i figured out this took place in 1955. i did some more research and i found out they are on strike for more money at there jobs

  95. Thanks, @Sparky, for sharing your comment. I also appreciate hearing how you arrived at your conclusions, which it sounds like you did here through further research. What did you see that made you say these people might be on strike for higher wages at their jobs?

  96. It might be protection for gasses

  97. I think they’re celebrating something like holiday, I’m pretty sure that’s happened in 1955.

  98. @Fuad - welcome to this morning's discussion, and thank you for sharing your thoughts. You're imagining this scene might be showing a celebration of some kind, happening in what you perceive could be the year 1955. Could you tell us more? What do you see that makes you say that?

  99. I think this a movie in Hollywood from around 1955 because that is when the movie "The Sea Chase" came out. I think this is a movie because there are men wearing bags over their heads walking down the street and nobody seems to notice and there are not very many cars around. This is probably because they are on set of a movie and the people around them are extras. I also think it is around 1955 in Hollywood because o the types of cars and buildings that are shown.

  100. In this picture it’s looks normal and also old because the camera it’s kinda black and white.it’s like people are busy doing their daily routine ,but when I looked closely it looks like a president or a honorable person passing by and their are some police officers protecting him/her,as usually when people see a celebrity or any famous person people start gathering and coming towards the person.

  101. @Mohamed - thank you for your comment this morning. It sounds like you're thoughts on this picture might have changed the more you looked at it! You were wondering if this might have been a normal day, but now you're imagining someone special or important might be traveling through. Could you tell us more? What do you see that made you change your mind and say there might be a celebrity in this scene, instead of just being a picture of daily life?

  102. In this picture, I see three men walking around in plastic bags. I think that they are doing this as part of a protest. It could have to do with recycling, since plastic products such as these bags are bad for the environment, and suffocate animals (just like how they are clearly almost suffocating these people). It must be a protest because they have chosen to do it in a very public place, next to a movie theater, so that many people will see them. I noticed that since it is not only in black and white, but also since the cars are old and the movie, "The Sea Chase", came out in 1955, that this must be in the 50s.

  103. @Arca, thank you for your comment this morning. It sounds like you're wondering straight away about the three men in the foreground with what you think might be plastic bags on their heads. You're imagining this might be part of a protest, as you see parallels between this and environmental concerns. I also hear you observing the background and thinking about context, meaning you are relating the setting of this picture to the specific event you imagine might be going on here. What do you see that makes you say these people look almost suffocated, like animals caught in environmental pollution?

  104. I think those people in the picture were trying to strick on something that was not going well in there community.

  105. In this picture, there are 3 people wearing some sort of plastic-looking sheet over their heads. Two of them are walking and the other one is sitting on a car that appears to be moving. Based on their surroundings, I can assume that they are in a busy city. Using this information, I can infer that the people in the sheets are advertising some sort of product, maybe a rain poncho of sort. The top part of the sheet looks transparent, so that the people can see, while the bottom looks opaque. In the background, there is a Pepsi-Cola sign. The design of this logo looks like the design from 1950s, so I can assume this is when this picture was taken. The movie on the sign in the background, "The Sea Chase," was made in 1955, so that was probably the year the picture was taken.

  106. @Riya I agree with your time period guess. The picture's style and the setting leads me to agree. However, would it be possible that they are at some kind of history parade or convention? I think this is unlikely, but possible.

  107. I think there are demonstration about something long time ago the location New York. Its looks like president to go for demonstration people to talk with those. And there are same police to support him or her.

  108. As this picture as it showed,it's looks like these people was celebrating a day which seems to be special to them or the state and this looks like it happened long time ego in 1990-1955!Am sure that this place was shows black picture and the black that being seated on it was like gardies for that someone in the car.

  109. @Elvis The 90's weren't that long ago... Check out the date on the movie

  110. I think this picture is in the 1950's to 1955. Because the movie The Sea Chase that's shown in background movie theater was released in 1955 in USA.This picture shows us three people wearing large garments over their clothes. One of them is sitting on a car and the other two are in the street. I think it's showing us people protested against they wore certain clothes to their uniforms or human rights.

  111. @A Z M Where do you think this protest ism taking place?

  112. There are three people with plastic covering them to their knees standing in a busy street. It appears to be in the 1950s because of the movies that are being advertised. The people in the plastic could be protesting something because they seem to be stopping traffic. They also look like they could be police man because of their hats.

  113. i think this picture was taken in downtown in the 90s because of the cars and fashion shown on the picture, this picture says a lot but it seems like there are on a movie set.

  114. @lydia 1990 fashion was similar today's as such I'd find it unlikely that it would occur then

  115. Thanks, @lydia for sharing your thoughts this morning. It sounds like you are observing details like the cars and fashion you see here, and concluding this might have taken place in a city, perhaps in the 1990s. @Ryan H, it sounds like you might disagree that it might be set then. For either of you, what do you see that makes you say the fashion feels either specific to the 1990s, like @lydia said, or not, as you say, @Ryan H.?

  116. I think this picture is taken in 1900th because it is black and white and there are 3 people were plastic maybe to cover themselves !! I think this move to object to something, there are cars behind them and people behind to blocking the road so it could be a protest.

  117. I think the men are a solider in a parade, and then they are for making people safe and protect themself if once they meet dangerous. it has happened in the downtown in 1945 in America.

  118. Welcome to this morning's discussion, @yiwen. Thank you for sharing your observations of this week's picture. I hear you focusing on the people in the foreground, and you're imagining they might be soldiers. You are also thinking of where this takes place, and you're concluding it might be in an American city, in the 1940s. Could you tell us more? What do you see that makes you say the people in the foreground might be there to protect people?

  119. i think in this picture is celebrating holiday because i can see the street is lock and police cars. around 1960s because i can seen cars and camera black and white evan people close. in new york downtown

  120. @abdfetah, thank you for your comment today! I hear you agreeing with @Elvis that a celebration might be going on. @abdfetah, you observe the street appears to be locked or shut down, and @Elvis, you think this day might be special to people. It sounds like you might disagree with @Maria T, @A Z M, and @Bella Ndayishimiye who think there might be a protest or strike going on. For either of you, what do you see that makes you say that the people here might be celebrating a special event or holiday?

  121. This might be a protest in 1955. The bags maybe be a protectant from something that may be thrown at them. They may be policemen, hence the hat.

  122. They could be protesting or taking a photo

  123. @Shamaya I agree on the police officers.

  124. Thank you for your comment, @Shamaya, and for your responses, @Moy and @Cody B. It sounds like there's lots of agreement that this picture might be of a protest, and that the people closest to us might be police officers. @Shamaya, I hear you being curious about the things the people in the foreground are wearing, which you think might be bags to protect them. What do you see that makes you say the bags might protect them in case anything is thrown at them? And let's keep looking together! What more can we find?

  125. Based on the fact that the movie is from the fifties, and the plethora of cars and people it is evident the picture is from the fifties. On top of this, the cold war is just occuring (along with the Korean war). As such I believe it is a civil defence drill (from when it was believed that "duck and cover" would save one from a nuclear bomb).

  126. It looks like this picture is for long time ago maybe in 1960 because the color is white and black . I think they are celebrating holly moon .because the street are busy and other people are warring fanny clothes .

  127. i believe that this is a day mourning and that these people are policemen and they are remembering the dead. the reasoning is that there are flags in the background maybe put up for this day. the cops are remembering them in some way.

  128. There are 3 people with clothes or sheets on the top part of their bodies. I say that because they're standing in the middle of traffic side by side as if they're waiting for somebody. I also see this 1800's NYC background with alot of people walking around, and the picture is also in black & white.

  129. It is evident that the picture is from the 50's due to the film, clothing, and cars. I think that the picture is a civil defense drill. And the gear they are wearing is to "protect" them from radiation.

  130. A mandatory drill in the 1950s regarding a nuclear attack. The police are wearing anti-radiation gear as they're going down the street in a parade like fashion.

  131. I think this is a parade in some big city because the road is big and the buildings are big. I think the people are wearing tarps over their heads because people through things at them during the parade. Also there are cars that look like they are blocking off the road.

  132. I think this is on some sort of movie set. The people in the background are just extras and the front 3 people are acting in a scene.

  133. This is in New York, New York, between 44th and 45th street on Broadway (the Pepsi Cola building in the background). It seems to be a prestigious opening for the movie The Sea Chase. This movie premiered in 1955, and since it is a prestigious event it is probably one of the first showings in June 1955. The men in the bags seem to be wearing some sort police hat so they are probably policemen. I would guess that it is some type of security for the event and the bags are to protect from things being thrown at them.

  134. Is this a parade of some sort? A protest? What are they wearing, Garbage bags? You can see the american flag in the back, so we know this is taking place in the USA. I adamadically think it's taking place in New York City because that's where I think of when I think of a big city. The men under the bag looks like a policeman from what you see of his hat.

  135. I think most of the people are going into the theatre to get away from something. The police in the tarps are going towards the something to fix it. It could be aliens but the people don't seem to be distressed so I'm gonna say they're just being controlled.

  136. From my view point of me ,it seems in 1950th,because the car model looks old fiat. The three man also they looked a police man because the way of dressing makes them formal with inside hut .The street also looks busy because of blocking by a numbers of cars.

  137. This looks like it's in Chicago or New York, the two main people look like police officers because of their hats. The person on the car looks like he is in the same uniform. They are in the middle of the street and it seems like people are walking around them. There are a lot of cars around and not a lot of people so I think that it is just a regular day with a small drill.

  138. I think that this was taken place in New York in 1955 (movie premiere in the background). There are three police with trash like bags over their head. I am guessing that they are protesting a cause because it seems like they are in some sort of parade.

  139. I think they are trying to protest but the policemen aren't allowed to show their faces. Hence the reason why they are wearing the plastic thing over themselves. I believe this took place in 1955 (the release of "The Sea Chase") probably in New York. However, it could also be the premiere of the movie and everyone is dressed up to go see it. The policemen are blocking it off so that people can cross.

  140. This picture is most likely taken in 1955 because that is when the movie in the background was released. The two men walking appear to be police officers because they look in uniform. This could be some kind of parade that requires ponchos while everyone else is going to the movie/premiere because most in the background are in suits and tux while there is a block behind the cars.

  141. In this picture, there appears to be people walking in the street, covered by some kind of poncho or bag. The two men at the forefront look like they wearing some kind of police uniform, so perhaps he is an officer. There is a person sitting on the vehicle, also with the poncho on, meaning if the car is moving, it is not going very fast. The setting appears to be in New York sometime in the 1950s or 60s. I think there is some kind of parade going on because of the people in the street. If not a parade, this may be a premier of the movie that we can see in the background: "The Sea Chase."

  142. I think the two men who are in front are police officers wearing bags over their bodies. Their field of vision isn't exactly blocked, maybe to have a field of vision while also protecting themselves from chemical harm? In the background we can a movie theater which dates it around the 1950's. During this time the Cold War was happening, so maybe they are doing drill or showcasing something. Seems to be a police parade.

  143. 1955-1960 time--The Sea Chase came out in 1955. A protest or parade is being held. The line of cars in the back looks like a barricade, and the strange outfits of the men in front imply they're making a statement. The Sea Chase has what could be considered a controversial plot for the time, so this could be a protest in regards to that.

  144. It might've been a recording for a show, and they could be wearing green screens for something. They seem to be standing in such a position that they might've prepared for beforehand.

  145. This appears to be New York during the late 1950's. There are three people wearing what seems to be tarps for some kind of protection. It could either be a protest or simply a small portion of a parade. The police cars could be setting up a temporary barrier for the parade. However, people along the sidewalk don't seem to show any interest.

  146. Cops wearing anti radiation suits and doing a drill around the 1950s

  147. @yikes This is an interesting perspective. What makes you think that the people in the front are police officers?

  148. I believe this is taking place in New York in 1955 on broadway between 44th and 45th streets. Based on the movie playing, and the Pepsi Cola building behind them. We can also infer from the model of car they are sitting on. It may be a celebration or some sort, or maybe, they are at an opening night for the movie.

  149. My guess as to what is happening in this picture is that is that this is a parade in 1955 in New York City and the subjects of the picture are advertising some sort of protective gear. The movie that is showing came out in 1955. The cars are parked in a way, and the front car appears to be moving slowly so that it appears that this is a parade. The setting could really be any bigger city, but it seems most likely that it takes place in NYC.

  150. @Jade If it is a parade, why isn't the area blockaded off from other roads? And why are there only a few people watching? Wouldn't there be more if it was a parade?

  151. This picture seem like people in downtown of America. They trying to make movie because of the flag appears in this particular. I think that is happened in the 1955’s because the pictures is black and white and the old cars .

  152. @Abeer Do you notice anything strange about the way these people are dressed? If they're from a movie, which one do you think it could be?

  153. In this picture, there are three people who are wearing large plastic tarps. The people are wearing hats that resemble the hats of policemen. I believe they are wearing these tarps to protect themselves from gasses in the air. I searched up the title of the movie being displayed on the sign and it says it was created in the 1950's. With this information, the look of the cars, the clothing being worn, and the color of the photo, I conclude that this picture was take a long time ago. It could possibly be taken in New York City because of the busy street.

  154. The time-frame this picture takes place in is in the ‘50s or ‘60s. I know this because of the type of cars that everyone is driving and the clothes that people are wearing. Moreover, the quality of the picture shows that it was taken a long time ago. Additionally, the setting of this picture is in a crowded city. I know this because I can see buildings lining the streets. Additionally, I see the streets filled with cars and people. Furthermore to the crowded city, there is an event going on at the theater. I know this because, the vast number of people entering the theater, as well as everyone leaving their cars and heading towards the theater. Based on this evidence, I can tell that this picture takes place in the ’50s or ’60s where an event is occurring at a theater in a crowded city.

  155. The focus of this picture appears to be three men wearing plastic "tarps" over their heads. I believe they are wearing these as some form of protest. Evidence of this would be: They are standing in the middle of the street, which would stop cars and cause people to look at them. They are wearing strange clothing, and are the only ones in the picture that seem to be doing so. This protest is probably happening in a big city like NYC or Chicago. It was also some time ago, because of the picture quality and the clothing style.

  156. This photograph shows a small group of people wearing trash bags over themselves. This can be told, for there are only three visible people wearing the trash bags. The clothes are trash bags due to the coloring and the length of the bags. This picture was taken in about about the late 1950s. It is mostly likely being that the photograph is in a black and white coloring, as well as the quality of the photo. In addition, the people other than the people wearing older clothing, the style of the cars and the buildings, and the movies that are shown in the background came out in 1955. These people are wearing the trash bags because of some kind of event or protest. I can tell this since in the background there are cars blocking the road. Furthermore, there is a crowd of people right by those cars. Therefore, this photograph presents of with people in the late 1950s wearing trash bags over their heads for some kind of event or protest.

  157. This is a picture of men protesting. I know this because one man is on the hood of the car not letting it drive. Additionally, the men are wearing hoods as if they want to block their faces. Furthermore, This picture took place in a city. I can conclude this because there is a bunch of skyscrapers and apartment buildings as shown in the picture. In addition, This picture took place in the mid nineteen fifties. I know this because the movie that is shown in the background is The Sea Chase which is a movie that premiered in nineteen fifty-five. Therefore, as the evidence shows this is a group of men protesting in a city in the mid-fifties.

  158. In the image i see 3 people with what looks like nylon bags over their heads. It looks like it’s taking place in the 50’s because the movie “The Sea Chase” was released in 1955. I think that they are shooting a movie because the people in the background look like they’re just walking around that are not paying any attention to the men in the front so i would say that they are extras at a movie set.

  159. @F.A Why would they be acting out a movie that was already released and keep the name of the movie up at the theatre?

  160. This image was taken in the early 1950s. I know this because the picture is printed in black and white ink. Furthermore, I can tell that this picture was taken long ago because of the old fashioned cars all around the image. Additionally, this image was photographed in America. I know this because there is an American flag hanging from one of the buildings. There is also some writing on a building, which is in the English language. Moreover, this image was taken in the setting of a city. I can tell this because of the tall buildings placed next to each other down the street. Another reason I know this is because of how busy the city is with people and cars. Based on this evidence, this image is taken in an American city during the 1950s.

  161. This photo was taken in the 1950s. I know this because of the car visible in the photo. In addition, the photo is in black in white. Moreover, this photo was taken in a city. I know this because there are a lot of people walking on the sidewalks, additionally, there are a lot of tall buildings in the pictures. Furthermore, there are men protesting in the streets. This is because there is a group of them all dressing similarly which means they might be trying to emphasize a point. All in all, there is a group of men protesting something in the middle of a city in the 1950s.

  162. It appears that in the following picture, there are three people with some sort of cover their face and body. I know this because I see three humanoid figures with a poncho like coat. Additionally,I know that the picture was taken in the past. I can infer this because the picture was taken in black and white. In addition, the movie, The Sea Chase was presented in theaters in 1955,alluding that the picture was taken in the past. Furthermore, the setting of the picture is one of the many cities in America. I know this because there are tall apartments, theaters, and busy workers. Also, I know it is a city in America because of the United States flag. All in all,the picture given to us,is of a city full of busy people in the past;possibly advertising a movie.

  163. I believe the photo was taken in older times. I think this because the photo is in black and white. Black and white became outdated after 1935 so I believe it was taken after then but before the 1960’s then. Also the model of the cars in the photo look fairly old. Additionally, I believe the photo was taken in a city. I think this because of the movie theatre in the background looks like one you would see in a city. Also the building in the back all look very high like skyscrapers. Moreover, I believe the people in bags are preparing for something. I believe this because the bags they are wearing look as if it is protecting them from something. So over all I believe the photo shows us A photo of a group of people waiting for something in a city in 1955.

  164. I think it”s a skit of the movie “The Sea Chase.” I don’t know anything about the movie but I can tell its a protest about something related to people using radioactive weapons, they are wearing old hazmat suits as a way to show what it would be like in the future nuclear warfare.

  165. In the picture I first see three people dressed in what looks like police uniforms, including large plastic bags or ponchos from head to knee. Two of them stand beside each other on a blocked street, while the third calmly sits on the front of a car behind them. Many other cars are parked behind them and on the right I see a man in a suit with what could be a dog, a child or a duck beside him. From research and observation it seems that ‘the sea chase’ came out in 1955, so this image should be from 1955. The man in the suit looks a bit more wealthy than the tens of citizens walking in the opposite direction and paying no attention to the fierce policemen in fashionable garbage bags. Perhaps this is a disgraceful act to the community, explaining why others refuse to look. Or perhaps these policemen are the bodyguards of the man in the suit, protecting themselves with plastic because they all happen to be allergic to the same kind of fabric. They seem to be having a good time, however. And I hope the person seated on the car got to use the bathroom.

  166. In this picture, I notice that there is some sort of gathering between the three people in the center of the picture. I know this because they are walking together and are all wearing the same thing. Additionally, this picture takes place in the 1950s. I know this because of the type of cars everybody is driving. The car in the center of the picture looks like an older 1950s Chrysler model. I know this because the symbol on the front looks like it says Chrysler and it does not look similar to the present models. Furthermore, this picture is taken place in America. I know this because there is a large American flag hanging on the outside of a building. In short, this picture is of people in America, at a gathering, in the 1950s.

  167. This picture was taken in 1955. I know this because, in the background, you can see the movie The Sea Chase which was shown in theaters in 1955. Additionally, the picture is in black and white which signifies that the picture was taken long ago. To add, this was taken in a large American city like New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, etc. I know this because there are a lot of large buildings in the background. On top of this, there is an American flag in the background of this picture, therefore, establishing the fact that this is a city in the United States of America. Furthermore, there appears to be some sort of protest. I know this because the three people in the middle of the picture are standing in the middle of the street which would cause people to stop their cars and look at them. The men also appear to be wearing police caps under their tarp which could signify that they are protesting the police due to the fact that they are covering the hat in a tarp. Based on the evidence, this picture was taken in the middle of a protest that was taking place in the middle of an American city during 1955.

  168. In the picture, there are men posing in a populated city street. I know this because there are many people and cars on the street. Additionally, there are large buildings, movie theaters, and stores along the street. The picture takes place in the late 1950s. I know this because the movie The Sea Chase starring John Wayne and Lana Turner came out in 1955. Similarly, the Chevrolet car in the background came out around the same time. The picture is taken in the United States. I know this because the American flag is hanging in the background on one of the buildings. In fact during World War II, the store called Admiral Television Appliances supplied the U.S. military with electronic equipment. Based on the evidence, there are men posing in a crowded city in the United States during the late 1950s.

  169. In this picture it looks like it was taken in an older time. I know this because the picture is black and white. Additionally, I know this because in the background, there is a movie theater showing The Sea Chase, which didn’t come out until 1955. Another thing I notice is that there might be bad weather that day, or it could be raining. I know this because there are people wearing these poncho-like bag things over their bodies. Furthermore, the flag in the background is blowing, suggesting that there is heavy wind along with the rain. A third and final thing I notice is that admiral tvs were just starting to come out. I know this because in the background, there is a store titled “Admiral Television Appliances”. In addition, tvs like that didn’t start coming out until the 1950’s, which this time period happens to be in the picture. Moreover, in this picture it looks like it is raining in an older time, with tvs and new movies just starting to be introduced to the world.

  170. In this picture, it looks like the photo was taken a long time ago. I can infer this because it is taken in black and white and that's how the pictures used to be taken. It is clear that this picture was taken in the city. I can infer this because there is a lot of tall buildings. I also know this was taken in the city because the area looks very busy because there is a lot of people. Additionally, there are two people standing in the front of the picture with what appears to be some type of police uniform. I can infer this because it looks like something a police would wear to protect themselves. Furthermore, the photo looks like it was taken around the 1950s. I can infer this because the cars in the picture look like they were from that time period. Overall, there are people in the city around 1950.

  171. I think this picture was taken in the 1950’s, Approximately in 1955. I know this because of the movie theater shown in the background. With the movie that got released at that exact time 1955 called, The Sea Chase. I also have evidence of the time and place from oveace representation which includes, The black and white background, Style, and place because of the vintage looking buildings with logos such as Coca Cola, and movie theaters. The three men I see in the picture seem to be wearing odd looking 2 Coloured ponchos, which are usually used for protection against water or rain but can also be used in crime scenes or protests, in this cause I think the best way to describe it would be the oddest but easiest one which is, That these men are posing/ acting for a movie in the movie it includes a scene with 3 men and serenading background actors, In conclusion this post is todo with ponchos, and based on New York and is a live action shot of a Movie being made.

  172. In this picture, I see three men that appear to be taking part in a protest. One of the men that is covered with some type of material is sitting on top of a car. By his body position, he looks annoyed and as if he is not going to move. There is a group of people that are entering what appears to be a cinema. Two of the other people in the background have a surprised look toward the men standing in the middle of the road. This suggests that the men are doing something untypical. The fact that they are standing in the middle of the road, suggests that they are trying to cause disruption, so that they can get the attention of the surrounding people for some specific reason. I believe that the men could be in the process of acting out a protest against a movie that could be playing inside the cinema. Perhaps, it is offensive in some sort of way. The material they are wearing on top of their body and face could be put there so that the other people in the area cannot distinguish the men's faces. Since there are only three people possibly in this protest, the men might not want to draw individual attention to themselves but towards the overall purpose of the protest. There is an American flag on one of the buildings, which suggests that this picture has taken place in America in some city, due to the large population present. The cars that are in this picture are of older models that appear to be of the 1900s, which means the 1900s could be the possible time set for the image.

  173. This picture takes place in the mid 50’s. I know this because the photo is in black and white. Additionally, the cars are big and bulky, indicating that they were made in the past. Moreover, there is a movie titled The Sea Chase playing in the theater in the back. The Sea Chase came out in 1955. The picture takes place in a busy city. I know this because there are tall buildings in the background, with a lot of billboards on them in addition. There was a car crash. I know this because the people are going to the side of the road. Furthermore, there are three men in ponchos that are stopping people from coming onto the road. Based on the evidence, a city in the 1950’s had a car crash.

  174. I think this picture was taken in an older time, because the picture is in black and white. The 3 men in the picture look like they have a plastic bag on them, the 2 in the front look like they could be police. The plastic could be to protect them from something.

  175. I think that this picture is taken in New York somewhere in the 50's. It looks like a sort of protest or parade. The police is wearing plastic protection maybe from water, or to hide their faces.

  176. I feel like the 3 men in the picture are doing some sort of protest because they're the only ones wearing bags and they're standing in the middle of the street, possibly to draw attention.

  177. In this picture I see some people walking around and police cars blocking the street. Perhaps a parade is taking place but the policemen are wearing strange clothes. I don't think that it's raining because no one is holding an umbrella. Perhaps they're wearing these strange cover ups because they want to protect themselves from something.

  178. This looks like some sort of protest from a different time period. It may be in response to "The Sea Chase" since it is on the sign to the left. I think that they are protesting because they are in the road and wearing some kind of bag on them.

  179. I am unbelievably impressed with the close looking this morning. Thank you for sharing your insightful observations. Many of you are thinking about WHERE and WHEN this image might be taking place- and finding excellent details to support your thinking. @Joseph P, @Bella.T, @Abeer, @Brennan P. – and many others are working hard to figure out the decade here. And have landed on the 1950’s for several reasons. Some of you have investigated the release date on the movie “The Sea Chase” posted on the marqee above the theater. Others have looked at the quality of the black and white film photograph. Others have noticed the make and model of the cars in the street, the architecture and the clothing styles. Are there other hints? Keep us the excellent work. What more can we find?

  180. We are on the streets of a large city perhaps around the 50's. There are people who appear to be wearing strange bag suits, however they are the only ones in the crowd doing so. I think they are perhaps protesting or performing in some act based on the fact that their portion of road appears sectioned off.
