Also there seems to be little sheets of paper that might give you instructions. I think that this is a charity event and it is for women's shelters. Maybe it is a benefit for a makeup line.

In this picture I see a bunch of women holding hand made scarves or another item behind their necks. There are also weaving tools in front of each woman on a table, this picture also looks like a photo taken from the 1950-1960. I also think this picture is takn from the 1950-1960 because of their style and clothes that they are wearing at that time. I also think this picture was taken when these women were finished weaving these towels, I also notice that the picture is black and white instead of colorful like the photos that we take now. In the picture it seems like the womans are doing the same thing like the women that is on the right side of the camera in the front. The clothing that the women are wearing immediately points of the year this picture was taken, around the 1960s. There is no way to tell if this was in America or some other country. They are all holding scarves around the backs of their heads which tells me that they are learning how to tie them in a fashionable way. This seems like a seminar or class of some sort, since the woman who looks like she is teaching is in the center of the room and all of the other women seem to be copying her.
From this picture it seems that these women are getting ready for something. They are using a technique that was used to get hair to stay kind of high up and curly as it sets. It makes me think that is is some kind of pageant or performance. Another possibility is that it is some kind of seminar on how to do the beauty of that time.

My very first impression is, oh this looks like its from the late 50s/ 60s based on it being black and white, and the hair and outfit from the front woman. The thought that immediately follows is that this is some sort of beauty trick or routine , since maintaning your looks what a huge emphasis then and they tired all sorts of oddball methods. This looks like maybye a class or seminar - maybye even a club based on the seating and organized table with items while the woman demonsrates how to do it. The idea of the neck towel seems strange, and since many of them are sloucing it doesnt really seem to be about improving the neck. Instead it might be to help their carefully curled hair, or even an arm workout.
I think this photo was made to appear as if these women were from the past and could possibly be testing a product or method of beauty.
By looking at the fashion and the fact that it is a black and white picture I think this could have been taken around the time of the womens rights movement. Women were still being strictly held to societal standards of them, working but doing "womanly" jobs such as textile work, sewing ect. Since they are all taking the same stance it is not an action shot. I think there stance has meaning behind it and they are trying to send a message.

To me, this picture looks like it was taken in the mid 1900s. In the beginning i saw mirrors and thought they were doing there makeup, but I didn't see any makeup on the tables at first. I noticed how the towels were were rolled up around there heads, and I realized they were doing something to their hair! All of the ladies hair already looks done, so maybe they were all learning a technique to dry their hair without ruining it. The way the towels were very neatly rolled up, and how their old fashioned hairstyles already looked drenched in hairspray gave this away. I looked at the positions of the women, and it looks like all of them are circling around the lady in the center, so maybe she's the teacher. In front of the mirrors and to the left, I saw what looks like pieces of paper ripped out of magazines. Maybe the women were all looking at images for makeup and hair inspiration.Lastly, I finally noticed little tubes of lipstick beside the paper, so this proves the idea of hair and makeup in this picture.

I think that in this photo, there are many business women who came back from a conference, and all decided to go to this getaway spa place. I think they rented out a room in a hotel, that is the hotel where their conference is at. That is why they are wearing the clothes they are wearing. They have wet, warm towels around their neck to relax their neck. I think the lady in the front is the one who was going to direct them, as she was the one who decided to plan this out.

I think that the image depicts a business conference for people who make and decorate rugs. So, I think that it might have been a way for them to achieve their desired curls.

What i think what is going on in this piutre is that a bunch of elderly people are building these towels that help with their necks and there necks.
I think that this is an old fashioned beauty salon back in the 90´s or 80´s. I infer this because on the table you can see fingernail polish and other kinds of stuff to do your hair,nails and makeup. I also thought this because why would there be a lot of ladies in there but yet there are no guys.

Mrs. Barrett - In this picture I see women in a conference room. They are all dressed in early 1960's attire. They seem to be using towels to help them stretch out their neck muscles. It could be the start of a beauty regime that they are going to sell to the public. I see makeup mirrors, lipstick and different boxes on the table. I also see cloth at each seat. They could be looking at colors and how everyone has a color match for their skin.
A lady at a shopping mall in Western Washington in Seattle works in a towel shop. Her name is Freedom. She sells towels. She has sold all these ladies towels and they are trying them.
This a women's night out and they are all about to do there makeup and hair. I say that because there is makeup and a mirror on the table.They are in a very large room with lots of people, they are about to rap there faces with some sort of cloth.
Betty is a model in 1964. Betty is a fashion designer because she loves to try on new styles of clothing. Betty is trying a rag that is supposed to get your hair dry in seconds. I think this women in United Kingdom or in China people making rugs for people who need them and to send them to the United states , or they're writing letters and taking a cooling break , or they're running a salon . Why I think this is because of the supplies on their table the faces and how they are dressed and how they are meditating .

The stuff on the desk looks like mirrors so maybe they need to see what there doing on both sides, maybe sowing them or fixing the rugs or what at least looks like rugs. From my observations, I believe this photo was probably taken in the 50s or 60s due to the way the women are dressing and the items which surround them. If you look at the tables you can see items which believe to be makeup, nail polish and other items. The tiny mirrors also seem to be plugged into something. These women are possibly attending some sort of class where they learn certain skills, maybe the woman in the foreground is the teacher, but I could be wrong.

-I suggest this to be a class or training course since they are all doing the same thing with the towel, which also suggests that this might be related to salon training or something. Also, all of their work stations have the same materials on them, including pamphlets and mirrors. I suggest that the woman in the center of the image is the instructor since she is the only one on the viewers side of the table, while the rest of the women are situated on the opposite side of the tables. She is also dressed the most professionally out of the bunch. I think this was taken in the 1950s or 60s since the image is in black and white, and their style of hair and dress seems to be from around that time period. Also, the type of the class/training and the fact that they are all women reinforce the time period of this image.

We think the women on the picture aren't women, but actually men dressed up as women. They just did their make-up at a home party. They are holding a piece of fabric in their necks to protect their hairdo while doing the make-up. We are conflicted about the date of the picture. Based on the clothing and antique looking place mats on the table, we'd say 50's of 60's, but the ceiling and the couch on the left look quite modern.
This picture is set in earlier years. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the ladies are wearing older clothes. Additionally this picture depicts that the ladies are most likely testing a women’s hair product. I can infer this since all the women are holding a towel behind their necks and leaning back as if waiting for results. From the product they are testing, I can infer it is a shampoo product. This is since the towels are most likely for their hair to dry. All in all, I can infer the women in this picture are all testing out a new hair shampoo product on the 1940’s or 1950’s.

I think this image is of a fancy hair salon or a women’s club of some sort. Every person in there looks really professional. I believe that this photo was taken probably during mid Autumn in the 1950s based off of the apparel of the women, and the fact that the photo is in black and white. Because I see that there are mirrors on the tables, and the women are rubbing the back of their heads with towels, this might be some sort of gathering or preparation for a formal get together or maybe just a casual rendezvous between friends. The women however, definitely seem to all be in a consortium of some sort. Their expressions appear to show that they all know each other, or give a semblance that they are at least colleagues since everyone looks pretty relaxed and comfortable. I think that the woman in the middle of the room could be the leader of the consortium or the person organizing this event, because she appears to be the center of focus. In addition, I noticed that there is a purse under the table which could prove my thoughts that this is indeed some sort of get together. I don’t believe that the purse would have been under there if they were working or testing a new hair product.
A bunch of ladies are either drying their hair, are rubbing a sore spot on the neck, or are taking a photo or comercial because a lot of the women are holding stuff behind their neck so they could be posing or drying hair, or massaging their necks.

Judging by the way the tables are organized, and the fact that these women are in a large room that looks like a conference room, I think that this is some sort of conference or group meeting for women. I also see mirrors and what looks like lipstick on the tables. I think that this may be some sort of beauty-related meeting for women.

My guess is that she is teaching them to wrap the towel in one way or another, such as the beehive-like towel wrap that many women do after they wash their hair. The woman in the center could be the leader, or it could be that she is just leading this particular segment of the meeting, and other women lead other parts.

I believe that the women in this picture are doing extensive needlework. Due to the fact that the photograph is black and white, it leads me to believe that this photo was taken around the 1930-60s. This could have been during the Great Depression. It looks as if they are making blankets or scarves or other works. The mirrors might be to look at yourself with your creation to see if it is fashionable. However, I might be very off.

The lady is the front looks like she's holding a rug behind her neck, while some of the ladies in the back look like they're holding up towels or scarves, so I don't think that what's on the table has to do much with the towels or scarves. Maybe the towels are helping their necks that might be hurting.
I think it is a metaphor - smoke in the miror, the mirrors on the table, and the black and white photo show this. Because grey is on the black and white spectrum, and smoke is commonly characterized as grey. This could be a metaphor for how some see the world in a black and white sense. But that’s their own illusion, the smoke in the mirror, of how morally grey the world is.

We think this because the fabric is detailed like a rug and there is a box and a tube on the table which might keep needles and string. I think that this photo has some interesting things in it. It appears that all of the humans in this photo are female, so that can cut out a lot of the male-dominant activities or jobs. Another thing is that they are facing the same direction, and are all doing the same thing. One time when that would happen is a time or place like now, when I am in school. All of those clues were gathered from the photo -- there are threads, sewing machines, and patterns. There are what looks like rugs under the necks of the women, which they could possibly be stretching.
However, I am rather discombobulated, since there are circular mirrors on the tables, and some of the women appear to be looking into the mirrors for an unknown reason. Also, from some angles it looks like the women are building models of buildings, which are on the tables.
I think they may be designing clothes or rugs or some other type of cloth. But that doesn’t explain the tiny mirrors. Perhaps they are cleaners and the have just specially cleaned the cloths and the mirror help to get a more up close look at the stain or smudge. Honestly I am very curious to find out what it is soon I think the answer will be interesting.

I also think it's a class for women, because as far as I can tell, there are no men actively participating in this activity.

Since there are utensils and work spaces set up, I think the women are making a craft. Based on the towels behind their heads, I think they are making towels although they could be rugs. This is my theory: the women were hired by a towel company to make very soft rugs for customers. The women finished the towels, but they needed to test the softness of it. They rubbed the towels on the back of their necks as the neck is a very sensitive part of the body to test the softness, which is what they are doing right now. Furthermore, these towels seem to be expensive as the towels are embroidered and white or a light color.

I think that this is in the fifties or the sixties because of the was the women are dressed and braces the photo is in black and white. The women appear to be preparing their hair for a shampoo advertizement. The boxes at each station say BRECK. Breck was a shampoo company known for its Breck Girls ad campaign. I think that these women are either going to model for company and are keeping their hair looking nice with a towel.

How do we reconcile/make sense of both sets of observations?
i think that they are taking a brake from there job. i think there job is something to do with makeup because they have a mirror and i can see a small container that looks like lipstick. or they are doing some paper work because i see a lot of paper and the black lipstick looking thing is some type of correcting pen or something to cross things out with.

This is a picture of a group of women at a convention or school for salon work. I know this because they have a bunch of mirorrs and beauty products in the background of the photo. In addition, this picture was taken in the mid to late 1950’s. I can conclude this because of the style of clothing and hair is of the 1950’s as they wore formal wear in that time. Furthermore, they are learning how to dry a persons hair after it has been washed. I can speculate this because, all of the women in the photo have towels or articles of fabric with them around their neck as if they are learning how to dry a persons neck after their hair has been washed. Therefore, as the evidence shows this is a picture of a group of women from the 1950’s learning how to dry hair for salon work.

This is most likely a dressing room because on the tables there are many mirrors, lipsticks, and other beauty products visible on the tables; they are all drying their hair hair with towels as well. Furthermore, this is a backstage dressing room for what could possibly be a play, musical, or presentation of some sort. This could be concluded by looking at the papers that are all over the tables which are most likely scripts or music, and the dressing room is very neat like a backstage dressing room should be.

I think that this picture is a bunch of people that were having a meeting and that they got to try out a product and the product is about towels and that these people get to try it out and that I think that they are testing it by seeing how soft the texture is or how ruff it is, so that they can improve and that why this picture was taken.

I would honestly say that they are working on different designs and strengths of materials for rugs and towels. What makes me say this is the design patterns some are not normal for a towel. There are what I think are pattern books on the table, the mirrors I do not understand why they are there.

I also believe that what is happening in this picture is probably some women are getting ready as shown by the mirrors (which are typicality used to apply makeup). I do not see the shampoo bottle on the table, however, multiple comments are describing this bottle, so I believe you Cassidy! I believe that this is a good inference altogether. Perhaps the ladies are cosmeticians, or have just been "practiced" on by having their hair cut for free! That would also somewhat explain the mirrors, maybe they wanted to look at their new hair style!
@Hunter and @Maiaa have both drawn our attention to what appear to be ashtrays in the center of the tables, and believe their presence is further evidence that this photograph wasn't taken recently. Today (at least in many parts of the US) smoking isn't legal in enclosed spaces like the one we see these people in. Those laws were not always in place.
In this picture I see 10 women who what it looks like are in a beauty or styling class in about 1950s-60s. All of the women are about to tie either scarfs or towels around their heads. In front of them there are desks with mirrors and what looks like possible beauty products or hair stuff, and a scarf. I can tell this is back then from the clothing the women are wearing, the quality of the picture- its a bit grainy when you look closely.

I see all sorts of different things I think it’s a nail place because I see nail polish on the table and I see this machine that drys out your nails after your done your pedicure. I see something completely different I see all women’s all wearing scarves and it looks like they might have made those scarves. I think they might be going somewhere maybe there getting ready because there are mirrors so maybe they are doing their makeup and hair.
We noticed that this picture is from long ago because it is black and white and the women have hairstyles and clothes that are from a long time ago. The group of women look like they might be trying on makeup because of the mirror on the table in front of each of them and we think there are beauty products on the table. We aren't sure why they are all facing the same way. They look like they are drying their hair or massaging their neck with the towel or blanket. We also had some people say that they could be making clothes or a rug because they thought the cords were to a machine.
At least a couple comments mentioned that these women are exercising. How might we support that idea with evidence in the picture? How might we refute it?

I think what's going on in this photo is that the ladies are working at a hair salon in the late 50’s. I say that because they have towels or something around their necks. I say that because the objects around their necks has a lot of texture and a design on it. I think it's the late 50’s because there’s ashtrays on every table and the way they dress. The main reason is that it’s black and white. That’s what I think is going on in this photo.

We can tell by the way the women are dressed and their hairstyles. This looks like a meeting room because of the room dividers. There are mirrors on the table and the women are holding towels like they are going to wrap their head. Maybe they are going to try some makeup or other face stuff.

In this photo I see women holding towels to the back of their heads, it appears that they have multiple of the same items in front of them. From the items I can see a mirror and a pamphlet maybe telling them about what they are doing. I think that this may be a cosmetology class or a beauty class. I think this because they are all women from what I can see, and the set up looks as though the lady in the center is instructing them. They are dressed maybe for the 60's or 70's.

The women in the center appears to be holding a towel, you can see that from the edges and if you look closely at the material. i cant tell exactly what time period this event is taking place but i can tell by the hairstyles, clothing, and the setup and decor of the room that this picture was taken before the 90s. In this picture,I believe that a group of women are testing beauty products in the 1950's. I believe this because you can see them drying their hair with towels and you see bottles of some beauty product in front of them. (i don't know enough about makeup to know what exactly.) The reason i think this is in the fifties is because that time period is when women's work really began to boom.

There is a group of women most likely in a salon. The woman in the front looks like she is showing the other women how to do something because she is in the front middle of the room. They all have some sort of "kit" in front of them, they also have a towel that they are putting around their head following what the lady in the front is doing so it could be a cosmetology lesson and she is the teacher at the time.

This is a large room filled with women, looks as if its a meeting of some sort. The women have what look like towels and they are rubbing the back of their heads with it. With a closer look I can see that there are mirrors on the tables so what ever these women are doing they are looking at themselves in the mirror as well. I noticed very soon after looking at this image that their are only women in this image. I see that they all have the same type of set up on the table like their working on a project or doing an assignment/testing something out. We think the women in this picture are hair dressers. They are testing out the first electric hair maker, to straighten or curl your hair. There are mirrors with wires that light up for the women to look at their hair and make-up when they are finished.

Many of us infer this photograph was taken a long time ago given that it is black and white. Other evidence that supports and clarifies that thinking comes from a few students at LCMS, who believe the clothes worn by the women in the photograph date it to the 1950s or 1960s. Is there additional evidence that might support this claim?
Based on this photograph, I can tell that the room is full of women. I know this because they are all wearing either dresses or skirts. Overall, based on the evidence provided the picture was taken in earlier times and the woman in the picture are getting ready for a formal event.
I see nine women standing at tables arranged in a horse shoe. They are putting some type of folded cloth around their ears, beginning at the back of their heads. They are perhaps learning to wrap their hair in cloth like some Muslim and some Hasidic Jewish women do.
But on closer inspection, I see that the women are dark-haired, and are perhaps Arabic, Turkish, or other nationality.
I say not Jewish, although Jewish women also cover their hair for religious reasons as do Muslim women. Hasidic women usually do not wrap their hair turban style as the women here seem about to do.
I aslo see that some women may be missing from the room. There are chairs with cloth draped acoss the backs, as if waiting other participants.

After looking at this photo I can see that this photo was taken some time in the 50s or 60s. I know this because the photo is in black and white, and because of the clothing they are wearing. Our 3rd grade class thinks that this picture is old because it is in black and white. We see one woman in the center holding a towel or scarf behind her neck. We also see all the other women doing the same with the the towel or scarf. We think that maybe the woman in the center is teaching the other woman how to do something. We noticed that there is a mirror and other items o the table which might help them create the towel or scarf. We also think this photo might have taken place during a time when women didn't have as many rights in the workplace as they do now.

This is an old picture I know this because the picture is in black and white. This is a gathering. I know this because there are people that are dressed nicely and there are lots of tables and chairs possibly for eating on. There are women using makeup. I know this because there are mirrors on the tables and what looks to be makeup. All in all, This is a gathering of women testing new makeup products to see how good they are if they were used.
In the image above, I noticed that the picture may have been taken a while ago. I know this because there aren’t many electronics that we have today in sight, and the picture is in black and white. Additionally, I noticed that there are beauty products on the table in the room. I know this because there are boxes and other items that are similar to products seen today. Overall, based on the evidence, I can infer that this is an older image of women who were preparing for something by doing either their hair or makeup.

I think this is a cosmetology class in the 50s or 60s because i noticed the mirrors and nail polish and all the extension cords on the table.

It looks like a older picture they are in a shop or work area they are holding rugs that they just made there is cloth on the tables they can use to make more rugs.

We noticed that all the women are standing and doing some sort of neck massage. There are only white females and they dressed classy in dresses only. They are in a very large room and they may be getting ready for a show. We say this because each woman has a mirror in front of them. It is in black and white which makes us think it is an older picture.
