it look's like these woman are attending beauty school because I see makeup and mirrors on the table and I'm not sure about the towels.
Giada (6A DMS)
In the image, it looks that there are ladies with towels around their necks. On the table, there appears to be mirrors, makeup pallets, lipstick or maybe nail polish. Also there seems to be little sheets of paper that might give you instructions. I think that this is a charity event and it is for women's shelters. Maybe it is a benefit for a makeup line.
Adrianna (6A DMS)
In this picture, I see women holding what look to be towels or scarves on their necks, like they’re measuring the backs of their heads. Based on their style of clothing and the lack of color in the picture, I assume this picture was taken sometime in the 50s. It looks like they are in a factory or beauty salon, so maybe their testing the fabrics on their heads.
Ella Biddlecom (Dunkirk,NY)
Team 6A Dunkirk Middle School In this picture I see a group of woman holding what looks like towels and rubbing them on their necks. Maybe this is some kind of beauty meeting, I think because on the tables there is mirrors, and maybe lipstick, and newspaper? So I think this is somewhere where these women get to go to try new beauty techniques.
Hanan Mohamad Narvaez 6A (Dunkirk NY)
In this picture I see a bunch of women holding hand made scarves or another item behind their necks. There are also weaving tools in front of each woman on a table, this picture also looks like a photo taken from the 1950-1960. I also think this picture is takn from the 1950-1960 because of their style and clothes that they are wearing at that time. I also think this picture was taken when these women were finished weaving these towels, I also notice that the picture is black and white instead of colorful like the photos that we take now. In the picture it seems like the womans are doing the same thing like the women that is on the right side of the camera in the front. It also looks like this picture was taking in a building with more than 1 floor becuase of the reflection of building on the huge mirror thats behind them. In the picture it seems like the women are all wearing dresses and high heels.
Edward Meadows (6A DMS)
it look like a bunch of people are holding scarves or towels around there neck it looks to be that there learning some kind of fashion
Elijah H (1441 Spruce st Denver co)
I think she is a hair stylist and she is training her workers to dry the costumiers hair
Faith Townsend (Boone, NC)
The clothing that the women are wearing immediately points of the year this picture was taken, around the 1960s. There is no way to tell if this was in America or some other country. They are all holding scarves around the backs of their heads which tells me that they are learning how to tie them in a fashionable way. This seems like a seminar or class of some sort, since the woman who looks like she is teaching is in the center of the room and all of the other women seem to be copying her.
Josiah Ford (Boone, NC)
From this picture it seems that these women are getting ready for something. They are using a technique that was used to get hair to stay kind of high up and curly as it sets. It makes me think that is is some kind of pageant or performance. Another possibility is that it is some kind of seminar on how to do the beauty of that time.
Katerina (US)
Based on the style of clothes the women in the photo are wearing it seems as though the photo was taken around the 1950s-1960s. It seems as though these women are having some sort of meeting and the woman in the center seems to be the leader and she's leading some sort of demonstration that the other women are following. Based on experience, she might be teaching them how to wrap their hair after a shower. On the tables there seems to be makeup and mirrors which lead me to believe this is some sort of beauty class.
maddie (Boone NC USA)
My very first impression is, oh this looks like its from the late 50s/ 60s based on it being black and white, and the hair and outfit from the front woman. The thought that immediately follows is that this is some sort of beauty trick or routine , since maintaning your looks what a huge emphasis then and they tired all sorts of oddball methods. This looks like maybye a class or seminar - maybye even a club based on the seating and organized table with items while the woman demonsrates how to do it. The idea of the neck towel seems strange, and since many of them are sloucing it doesnt really seem to be about improving the neck. Instead it might be to help their carefully curled hair, or even an arm workout.
Emily (NC)
I think this photo was made to appear as if these women were from the past and could possibly be testing a product or method of beauty.
Cassidy T. (Boone)
By looking at the fashion and the fact that it is a black and white picture I think this could have been taken around the time of the womens rights movement. Women were still being strictly held to societal standards of them, working but doing "womanly" jobs such as textile work, sewing ect. Since they are all taking the same stance it is not an action shot. I think there stance has meaning behind it and they are trying to send a message.
ned (australia)
in my opinion the women are setting up a dinner for someone higher up thean them.
Aaron Bagster (Brisbane Australia)
I noticed that the picture is black and white and they women are wearing old fashioned clothes so that means it is probably around the time when women where house keepers I think (given the fact that there are sewing machines on the tables) that they are learning how to make cloth or furniture. The women in the middle is probably the instructor.
Rebeca (Dillon, Colorado)
In my opinion, they are making rugs for a house on the table ther is a mini roof and paper
Rebeca (Dillon, Colorado)
In my opinion ,it looks like they are making rugs ,for a house ,ther making furniture,I see on the table ther is a mini roof and some paper.
Matthew Figueroa (Rochester,NY)
There is a women holding a towel behind her head and people around the table doing the same thing. There is stuff on the table.I notice that everyone are females,I also notice there being a lot of chair.
Jorge (Drexel Hill, PA)
In my opinion in the picture they are probably practicing some kind of staff of their culture that it could be religious. They seat at the table to eat and probably they get relax before it, the mirrors can say that they are gonna make a ritual. They are gonna pray for something or maybe for someone.
Cristina (Drexel Hill, PA)
In my opinion there are many women’s who are at work, they are in their free time and they are learning how to massage their necks with a towel to women will serve them much if their learn more is better because they can like their own business of massages in all the body. Women’s are learning cosmetologist because i see in the mirrors on the table and they are like learning to clean the back in the head.
Kerly (Drexel Hill, PA)
In my opinion in the picture the womens are learning cosmetolegits in a salon. I say this beacuse I see some mirrors in the tables and some tools that they use to do manicure and pedicure, the womes are doing the same thing, they are standing up cleaning the back of the head. I think they are like in a school for cosmetolegits that they are learning more skills like how to give massage their neck with a towel so they can relax.
Saurav (Drexel hill PA)
I believe that women attending the conference at Cosmetologists to learn some new skills. I think that they are at the conference of Cosmetologists, for there are mirrors on the table. They are doing something with their hairs with a piece of cloth. There are nail machines to make their nails look better. I think this picture is taken in 1920s, for their hair style and the equipments they are using to study for Cosmetologists. The color of the picture is black and white, so i guess that the picture is taken 1920s. The teacher is standing alone to teach their students to how to set their hairs with clothes.
Mabinty (Drexel Hill, PA)
In my opinion I believe that the women in the picture are learning the basics of beauty. I see mirrors on the tables as well as the women dressed nicely and their hair and makeup done. I see that the mirrors light up, possibly because they need to see what they are doing. I also see a matching shoes with all the women, probably to show us how to match shoes with clothing. I noticed the women are holding the towels towords their hair. It also seems to have been a few years ago because the imge is in black and white.
Leemu (drexel hill)
I believe that these women are learning new things in the cosmetology. They are trying to do some massage for the people around them. I also believe that these ten women are trying to make something good for their customer. They are also trying to put the towel around their neck to do some massage so they can live longer. These ten women are making a TV show. So that people can see what they are trying to do around the world. For me, I think they are they are doing a good job. They all get their things set for the cosmetology class.
Maliik (Drexel hill, PA)
I think that is the picture taken by 1950 in college class. That it get made for only womens for all ages. In the middle of the picture is the teacher showing her students how to hold the product what they working on . what i think also that they are learning how to become cosmetologists by learning doing massage, and by trying the product that they gonna use. However in 1950 they use this material to do message.
Agnes (Drexel hill, PA)
This picture was taken in the 1950s in America some women are wearing suits, In my opinion the women in the picture are employees in the office, they are training to become cosmetologists. The woman in the foreground is the teacher she is trying to demonstrate the use of the product, and I noticed that the women are holding towels and also put them on their neck and hair. they are watching towards the mirror to perform an experiment on their self to see how does the product look like . I believe that these women are taking beauty course and they are learning how to do something with their hair, because they have papers on their table.
Jannatul (Drexel Hill )
I like to suggest that all women are in Cosmetologists class. In the class I saw some tables and at the tables I saw a mirror, makeup, and clean clothes their makeup. Also they are rubbing their towels on their hair. The women in front of the desk might be teaching other ladies about makeup. The woman gave instructions and other women followed the instruction. Maybe women are trying to learn personal care training workshop. Another idea is that these people are testing out some kind of hair product. Also it looks like it takes place in 1950 due to the fashion and hairstyles. There also older machines on the tables that people didn’t use today.
Nirvair (Drexel Hill, PA)
I think it’s collage class for womens. The womens are conducting a science experiment. Maybe it’s personal tarining class in collage. Teacher was showing how to do experiment. In class they are trying to make something like new product, and all class was testing the product on there nick. To me like this picture was taken in 19th century because hair and chothing look like old style.
Huynh (Drexel hill)
I think in this picture, these women testing a product. I would guess, this small class was creating some new stuff that help for people need demand on hairstyle or beauty. Also, I see the women in the middle might teach to another person about makeup or facial, because I saw some lipstick, nail polish, and mirrors. I can tell that picture was taken place around the 60’s, for I saw little a black and white color, with the clothes they wear and the materials they use. Another opinion, I think they use the towel for straining their neck muscle or neck pain. Although a women are conducting a science experiment, they found the good thing to make the towel useful in the life. However these women use the towels for a hair technique. They practice use a towels correctly for their customers in workshops.
Mahmudul (Drexel Hill, PA)
I believe this women are employees of a company. All women are in a big room and they have their new product a towel. They try their new product that how to use that. The manager show to all employee how to use it. The reason why i say is a company because First, a group of people work in a same room. Second, all people had a same product on their hand. Third, all employee lead by their manager. This are the reason i say is a company.
Alpha (Drexel Hill)
Alpha Sesay I believe that these women are in a secret organisation. The woman seem to have towels around their head. Maybe it some kind of everyday rooting. Maybe it a way they start their club. Looking around the room, I see mirrors and a lot of new paper. Everybody in the room is standing with them holding a towel behind their head. By looking at the way their dressing it seem to be only woman, there are no men. In conclusion this is a secret ongenisarion for only women. It also seem that this picture was taken a long time ago, just by looking at the way there dress. Plus it in black and white.
Agnes (Drexel hill, PA)
Alpha how do you know it is secret organisation ?
Lovejot (Drexel Hill ,P.A)
@Alpha i think its not a towels class bro you can see that tables they have lab stuff. I am disagree you.
Lovejot (Drexel Hill ,P.A)
I think this picture shows a science class in college. They are doing a experiment in this class. The women were showing all the students how to do this experiment. They have a mirror in this room. They are using some papers in this experiment. They turned all the lights off in this room. All people are standing behind the tables. The teacher was in the middle. Everybody is using clothes in this experiment. Some people are lazy in this experiment. Maybe they all are researching something in this experiment or finding.
Maliik (Drexel hill, PA)
@Lovejot i don't think that they have mirror cuz everybody was looking different location
Jensen (Drexel Hill, PA)
I believe that the group of women in the picture are learning how to fix hair, the reason I say they're learning is because they are doing what the lady in the front is doing. And it seem like they are learning how to dry hair or how to relax person neck and also how to do manicure because if u look carefully you will see a small stuff like a merrow with some wire on the table. ‘’ I believe that this picture was taken during 1940s, the doesn’t have a real color, it’s in black and white and the hair star of the woman that leading the group have kind of way back hair star.
Satinder Kaur (Drexelhill )
In my opinion I think they are getting training for cosmetologists to learn some more skills. They have also mirror on the table to look how they are getting massage. They are teaching the other people. They are get relax. They are get manicure. They are playing game. This picture got taken in 1950s/1960s. It looks like they are in the hotel room.
Sunny (Drexelhill)
I believe that women attending a conference for cosmetologists to learn some new skills. They are in conference room and they are following their leader to learn some new skills. There hairs looks like they are in 1960s. They all are getting training from the women. It looks like there is cosmetologists equipment on the table. The all womens are well dressed so that shows they are doing some training stuff and that is sure that the room is in restaurant. All womens are very interested in their job. They also glad to work on the training. We all believe that they will achieve their goal.
Stephanie (Drexel Hill, PA)
I believe that the picture we are studying was taken in the 1970s. In this picture we are only seeing women. These women are really educated. For my opinion these women had good jobs, and they have a really cute style. They are in reunion around a table for a discussion before they begun to do the pictures. They are protesting about something who happened towards the women of their generations. They are taking a picture with a towel in their head. I think that the women in the center is the boss.
lakhwinder (drexel Hill, PA )
In the opinion woman attending a conference for cosmetologists to learn some new skills. I think they are in the conference room, and I saw mirrors on the tables. They are look in the mirrors, because they see how they getting massage. There is lady who’s giving them training. They are learn to massage the neck. This picture got taken 1905\1960.
Yong Neng (Drexel Hill, PA)
In my opinion, I think they are practicing for take care of customers. They are cosmetologists and their job is going to service their customers. But they still need time to practice their skill. They would use the mechanical to make their customers nail to get dry after they finished the manicure. Cosmetologists help their customers to get pretty nails and soft skin. Also they help their customers to get a relax massage. In the picture I think they are the new employees of the beauty salon. They are not able to service their customers yet because they still need time to practice their skill.
Satnam (Drexelhill)
In my opinion I think that they are getting training for cosmetologists to learn some more skills. They are learning how to give relax massage to the customers. They also have mirrors on the tables to look how they are getting massage. They have equipments to use for training. There is a lady who’s giving them training. This picture got taken in 1950s/1960s. It looks like they are in the hotel room.
King Isaac (South Florida)
I saw mirrors, make-up, 10 women, and cloths to clean off the make-up from their faces. I think they're all friends doing a makeover.
Monroe (llll)
It is people at some makeup place, and they are resting by putting towels on there necks.
m n n nhjnhj (vjjfvjfvjvjfnfvjnv)
its people doing there hair in a hotel
Mrs. Highlander (Manawa wi)
Our class thinks this is a shower, bridal or baby, and they are playing a game.
Miss Willeke's class (Texas)
Our class thinks this could be after a baptism at a church because they are using towels to dry their hair and they are wearing white. Another idea is that these people are at a salon because they have mirrors and towels. Also, we think someone was wearing a facial mask. Our last idea is that these people are about to go to a meeting because they are drying their hair and trying to look perfect.
Rebecca (Iowa)
This is a hairdresser class. If you look at the things on the tables, it looks like they are in a class. It also could be that they are in an etiquette class because the tables have napkins and placemats.
Burl (The Lady in the Front)
These 1960s self absorbed house wives are learning about their face and how to take care of them. So it's a class about changing who you are:/ It's a demeaning and awful thing. They just wanted to be perfect, BUT YOUR PERFECT JUST THE WAY YOU ARE.
Reagan (Iowa)
They are at a fashion/makeup convention thing. They are rubbing their towels on their hair to make it frizzy because that looked back then I guess.
Abdul-Rahim Ahmad (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia)
This is a personal care training workshop/class, where participants are practically applying tips learned during the session. N.B. Just a wild guess ... I have never been to any such classes.
Jordan (St. Paul, MN)
I think the whatever the women are doing at the tables is straining their neck muscles, so they’re taking a break to rub their muscles. I think this takes place around the 60’s and in a metropolitan area such as New York or Dallas. There are lighted mirrors and other tools at the tables, meaning they’re at work, and if you jump a little further, you can assume their necks are sore from that work. The hairstyles and clothes makes me think it takes place in the 1960’s. There many women, and they all have the same tools at their spots.
Donnovan (pcs)
this photo looks like its in a fancy building because it has a lot of lights and thats cool and i dont know whats going on with the cheep towles on there heads but i guess ya nevea no
alli,s (@ems)
I was close it is not a nail salon but a work out place. this means that in the picture they where trying something like a new product.
Tyler (ems)
they are testing out some kind of hair product
Raina (Vermont)
These women are testing a product. I would guess it's some sort of beauty product because of all the beauty products in the room. It looks like like it takes place in the 50's or 60's due to the fashion and hairstyles.
5C Class (Bronx, NY)
We think this is some kind of salon or a class. It has to do with makeup and beauty. We see beauty products, such as mirrors and lipstick, on the tables. They appear to be rubbing towels on their necks. It could be that they are drying after a hair wash, like after a haircut. This picture seems like it is from 1950's, 60's or 70's because the clothing, hairstyles, and that it is in black and white. We see big mirrors in the background.
Mrs. Melissa's Class (Iuka, MS)
We believe these ladies are getting prettied up. It seems to be a large rented room for a special occasion. Maybe this is a class. We think they are using a hair fluffing technique. The hair styles lead us to believe this is an older photograph.
Lil Tay (CT)
I think that the photo shows a very hot room, so the people have to wipe off their sweat with a towel. It might be a sweatshop. Or the woman in the middle might be teaching them about make up, because I see lipstick or nail polish, mirrors, and maybe eye shadow.
Fern P (Putney Central School)
To me is looks like this picture was taken in the mid-20th century because of the clothes, hair styles, and lack of color in the photo. I see a lot of mirrors and what looks like lipsticks, nail polish an other beauty products. Maybe the person looking into the camera in front is teaching a beauty class. They could be practicing a technique using the rolled up rags to style their hair.
Raina (Vermont)
@Fern P I agree that this is an older picture and that they are using some sort of beauty product.
Class 4K (Lakenham)
@Fern P Thank you for your response to our comment! We loved your feedback and it has made us think and we have been looking at the photo even more! We love your idea that the person in front is teaching the class. Some of us thought that she might need more space if she is exercising. Just like we do in our PE lessons at school
Sarah (Vermont)
We think that the picture is a teacher who is teaching other ladies how to dry their hair with a towel and without a hair dryer. We think this picture takes place a long time ago because the picture is black and white and they all have the same fashion. There also older machines on the tables that we no longer use today.
nagam nasher (rochester )
@Sarah HI how you know they dry her hair
Mrs. Wright's Krispy Savages (Connecticut)
We think that the photo shows a very hot room, so the people have to wipe off their sweat with a towel. It might be a sweatshop. Or the woman in the middle might be teaching them about make up, because we saw lipstick or nail polish, mirrors, and maybe eye shadows. Our class had a hard time agreeing.
Abibat Lateef (Julia R. Masterman)
Judging from the women’s clothing, their hairstyle, and their looks, this is an image from the 1950s. This is some sort of beauty class and the woman closest to the camera is the instructor. The women in the background are following what she does. All the women are holding a sheet of fabric or towels in both hands and are pulling it onto the back of their heads. On the tables, you can also see mirrors and other products. From this image, I depict the instructor in front is showing these other women some type of beauty technique for their hair using towels.
Class 4K (Lakenham)
We have lots of different ideas about this picture. It could be... Some ladies attending a make up class. We thought that the people in the picture might be rubbing their necks (possible injury?) with a towel to make it feel better. They could be exercising? We thought that the picture might have been taken sometime between the 1950s and the 1970s, because lots of women cared about their appearance then and the photograph is in black and white!
Fern P (Putney Central School)
@Class 4K I think you have a lot of great ideas! I didn't think about the fact that they might be exercising. It seems like all of these photos are things you don't expect, so that definitely could be a possibility! You all have really good thoughts.
Lucas K (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the 1950s. I know this because of the way the women in the picture dress and style their hair. The women in the picture are styling their hair. I know this because the women in the picture are holding some sort of towel or rag to their hair. Furthermore, this picture takes place in a beauty salon of some sort. I know this because there are mirrors all over the tables and mirrors are typically found a lot in beauty salon. Based on the evidence, women in the 1950s are styling their hair in a beauty salon.
Savion (Berlin,ct)
In this picture I think these people are working in a sweat shop because all of these people have towels.
N from Lit Lab (Newton, Ma)
I think the image shows women that are working in a towel factory, and they are check the smoothness or the softness.
Molly Flaxman (Masterman School Philadelphia)
To me, this picture looks like it was taken in the mid 1900s. In the beginning i saw mirrors and thought they were doing there makeup, but I didn't see any makeup on the tables at first. I noticed how the towels were were rolled up around there heads, and I realized they were doing something to their hair! All of the ladies hair already looks done, so maybe they were all learning a technique to dry their hair without ruining it. The way the towels were very neatly rolled up, and how their old fashioned hairstyles already looked drenched in hairspray gave this away. I looked at the positions of the women, and it looks like all of them are circling around the lady in the center, so maybe she's the teacher. In front of the mirrors and to the left, I saw what looks like pieces of paper ripped out of magazines. Maybe the women were all looking at images for makeup and hair inspiration.Lastly, I finally noticed little tubes of lipstick beside the paper, so this proves the idea of hair and makeup in this picture.
4th Grade Class (Montana)
This picture was taken from the 1950's. The women are at a beauty party doing something with their hair. The towels are helping them dye their hair.
Beeghs (Omaha)
Our class thinks this takes place in the 1950s or 1960s because of their clothing and their hair. We think they are at meeting where they try out beauty products. We think that because we noticed the mirrors, makeup on the table, etc. We're still confused about what they're doing with the towels.
Isabelle (pcs)
This picture looks taken in maybe the 40's or early 50's. Im guessing that they are maybe learning how to add volume to their hair or something it is a technique to dry hair
Anna Praticò (J. R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
This picture looks like it was taken during the 1940's or 50's, because of the fashion of their clothing, and the quality of the picture. It looks like the women are trying to learn how to dry their hair in a certain manner, as to not damage all the hair spray or "volume" in their hair. Also, it seems like they're at some sort of beauty convention, because it looks like there are makeup mirrors in the center of the tables, and also some sort of lipstick next to the rectangular boxes. Additionally, if you look closely on the table, there is a drawing of a girl either looking in a mirror or applying makeup on a piece of paper, as if taken out of a magazine. Finally, it looks like there is an eyeshadow pallet facing downwards on the newspaper. I think they are doing all this to show off class, status, and wealth.
Naiima Jabati (Julia R. Masterman, Philadelphia)
I think that the women in this picture are learning the basics of “beauty”. I see mirrors on the tables as well as the women dressed nicely and with their hair and makeup done. I see that the mirrors light up, possibly because they need to see what they are doing, maybe makeup. I also see that there are matching shoes with all the women, probably to show how to match shoes with clothing. I noticed that the women are holding the towels towards their hair, maybe to possibly dry it.
Mrs. Wright's Krispy Savages (Connecticut)
@Naiima Jabati We didn't even notice the shoes! Great looking :)
Rikesh Darji (Rochester, NY)
Tittle: women doing exercise I think the women are doing exercise because they feeling bored. The towel helping them to feel better. And I think they learn what to do when they getting bored.
Ms. Braiman (Rochester, NY)
@Rikesh Darji Hi Rikesh, That is interesting. How do you know the women are bored? What do you see in the photograph that makes you think that?
Duni Tanguay (Rochester, NY)
Tittle: The towels The women have towels and they make towels. They make that to get money so they can buy houses and jobs. The women are drying their hair because they have wet hair and they are drying. The woman is teaching the class how to do hair. This was i
Javier Torres (Rochester N.Y)
Why do you think they make towels.
Ms. Braiman (Rochester, NY)
@Duni Tanguay I also have a question, Duni. Why are the women using the rolled up towels on their necks.? Thank you.
Fatima (Ronquillo)
I Believe that these women are taking a beauty course and they are learning how to do something with there hair. Because they have papers on the table and mirrors. It also seems to have been a few years ago because the image is in black and white.
Alfredo (Rochester ny)
@Fatima why do you think the woman are taking a beauty course for the hair
Basheer Mohamed (Rochester )
Title: Teaching the Make-up I see woman teach how to do the make-up Because I see woman with a towel in the middle Teaching the other woman and I see mirrors she Teaches them to look good .

Title: Teaching the Make-up I see woman teach how to do the make-up Because I see woman with a towel in the middle Teaching the other woman and I see mirrors she Teaches them to look good .
Lemly (3rd Grade Elk Neck)
We think this is an old picture because it's black and white, but maybe not. We think the ladies are getting ready for something. They may be doing their hair or make up. This must be something that girls do.
Cristal (Rochester new york)
The women are drying their hair because they have towels. The women’s hair is getting dried because they have wet hair and they are drying it. Below a woman is teaching the class how to style hair so they can get jobs.
Isabelle (pcs)
@Cristal Thats a good idea
Sienna Shelton (Masterman, Philadephia)
I think that in this photo, there are many business women who came back from a conference, and all decided to go to this getaway spa place. I think they rented out a room in a hotel, that is the hotel where their conference is at. That is why they are wearing the clothes they are wearing. They have wet, warm towels around their neck to relax their neck. I think the lady in the front is the one who was going to direct them, as she was the one who decided to plan this out.
nagam nasher (rochester )
Title: The women doing massage. I think they are learning massage. I see women rubbing their wrecks by using towels. I think when they learn to massage, they are going to get a job
Ms. Braiman (Rochester, NY)
@nagam nasher Hi Nagam, This is good thinking. The women do look relaxed using towels. Do you think they are learning anything else in this class?
Teddy (Someone on land)
maybe this picture is for an apple commercial because apple commercials are always weird and stupid. The XR commercial was really weird so maybe its for the new iphone that nobody knows about. philadelphia J.R Masterman
Tandisse4thGrade (WA)
I think this is a place for women or men in olden days to put on makeup to and do their hair in specific ways so it doesn't get damaged.
Megan (Calgary)
I think that these women are at a conference in a hotel roughly in the 60's. It looks like they are at a beauty class because you can see that there is makeup mirrors on every table along with makeup. The women look like they are learning how to dry there hair in a specific way in order to not damage it. The way these women are dressed show that they look like they are rich and have a high social status. The women in the middle looks like she is the one leading the beauty conference.
Samuel Hamilton (Masterman)
I think that the image depicts a business conference for people who make and decorate rugs. I get this idea from the object that everybody is holding and all the machines that look surprisingly like sewing machines. I also se the folding wall in the background and U-shaped table setup, both of these are often in private business conferences. I think that at this conference people were going to set up stations on the inside of the tables and people will travel around the outside looking at these different booths.
Tiko ML (Philly)
I believe that these women have just taken a sewing class because I see sewing machines on the tables and I see yarn. These women look like they are showing off their finished projects. The picture looks like it was taken in the 1900's because it is in white and black. The person standing in the front has authority and may be teaching the class or instructing the people attending the class.
John jones (California )
They must have been doing something with beauty or hair cause they had mirrors and the rugs is something to help the sell or something.
Noah bob (Henry)
The woman in front Is soliciting the products on the table and the women around the table are buy them products The photo was taken in the 60s or 70s When soliciting was common
Tyler martin (Maine)
I believe that it looks like they are haveing a beauty class. There is makeup & and mirrors at every seat. They have towels on the back of there heads to learn how to properly wrap a towel on there head but tbh I think she is trying to sell beauty products.
Superman💯💯 (Maine)
I think they are trying to sell a good rug and they are trying to test it in the right way.
Ayush Pandejee (Julia R. Masterman)
I think that photo has something to do with fitness. I see people holding towels and standing around tables that have mirrors on them. This picture was taken in the recent ages due to the quality of the photo and the ability to take a mono photograph. The person that's in the front is probably the teacher/leader/head of the program.
Nico M. (Masterman, Philadelphia)
I think that the people were using a hair technique. It might have been what they did to dry or style their hair. I think this because the towels are on their hair and it looks like some of them were holding their arms up for a while. In that time, the style was curls and not many people had them. So, I think that it might have been a way for them to achieve their desired curls.
Lily Chancey (Philadelphia, Masterman)
I think that this is an image of some sort of beauty class. Based on the way that the people in the photo are dressed, it is taking place in the 50s or 60s. The person in the front of the class may be showing them a technique to curl or dry their hair, as they all have a similar loose-curls hairstyle. I think that the person in the front is their teacher, and it is definitely a class based around beauty because there are makeup supplies and mirrors on the tables, and if the time period is the 50s, women in those days would have cared a lot about how they look, especially in compliance with the standards of fashion in the olden days. That is what I think is happening in this photograph.
Elle (clayton)
All the women are standing and putting towels behind their heads, and there are some mirrors and lipsticks on the desk, so I guess they are having a SPA party.
Marissa (Port Orchard)
In this picture there is a room full of women holding towels around the back of their heads. I think that they are following a beauty tutorial being shown on a screen behind the camera. I think this is a beauty convention because there are tables with mirrors throughout the room. I can also find that the women are wearing clothes from the 80s, which leads me to believe that the was taken in that time era.
Adeline M (SKHS)
It looks like this photo was taken in the late 50s-early 60s because of the clothing the women are wearing as well as the plugged-in mirrors on the tables in the midground of the photo. The woman in the front looks like she’s demonstrating something to the other women using the towel in her hands. All of the women are looking downward so maybe they are using the towel to help stretch their neck out.
Tayler Dodge (Seattle Wa)
What is going on in this picture? Maybe it is a carpet or some sort of clothing warehouse where they keep the workers downstairs doing hard manual labor. They have cloth wrapped around their head What do you see that makes you say that? They have fabric wrapped around their head and they have similar stations at the tables. What more can you find? None
Shan (Sms)
All the people are sewing towel together for a class they are doing for school. Every Person is wearing a dress to look good for the class to do every day. The towel is so soft to feel on your neck.
Alphonzo (sms)
What i think what is going on in this piutre is that a bunch of elderly people are building these towels that help with their necks and there necks.
carol (sms)
I think that this is an old fashioned beauty salon back in the 90´s or 80´s. I infer this because on the table you can see fingernail polish and other kinds of stuff to do your hair, nails and makeup. I also thought this because why would there be a lot of ladies in there but yet there are no guys.
mirelsi (sms)
I think this picture is from the 1970's because of there hair style and because of their dressing it's kinda old fashion and I think they are doing makeup because i see a mirror .
Gustavo (SMS)
There are a bunch of women with a towel on their shoulder. The picture looks kinda old becasue of what they're dressed and also because the picture is on black & white. It looks like their working on something.
Kailee (sms)
What I think the women in this picture are at a salon and they put in pink hair curlers. Then put hair spray and to make sure they stay curled then pushed it up with towel to make the curls bounce.
Barydon (SMS)
It looks like these girls work at a salon. They are like they are drying there hair or fixing it. To show people how to do it or not.
yuli (sms)
This women are in a hair salon. They are getting their hair done and their nails. But at the end they have to make sure they are ready to go, so the last thing they do is they grab a towel, they put them at the back of their neck and they rub it to one side to the other, and the lady's are done.
Brayan (SMS)
Maybe it's a reading convention. Because there is books, in the tables. Or maybe a spa and the books, are just magazines and there fixing each, others hair. I think and practicing with the tools.
Jacob.s.byrd (stewart middle school)
I believe the date is in the late thirdys or early fourdys and the women are at a mary kay party.I think they are doing what they do at a mary kay party.
tv (sms)
I think What is happening in this picture is they are in a knitting class and and they just made a towel and they are seeing how soft enough.
Mrs. Barrett's Group (Batavia, NY)
Michael - I think they are make up store. I see ashtrays on the table and make up stuff. The floor is wooden and there are a lot of people in there. I see cords and mirrors and they would use those for make up. This is in the 1960's. Everyone has towels around them. There are a lot of tables and chairs. Jamari - I see that there is a building filled with girls, women, people, ladies... I see they have towels around their necks. There are tables with chairs around them. There are newspapers, a wallet, mirrors, a cord, that tray thing and I think the lady in the middle is teaching the other ladies about makeup. Sonny - There are a bunch of girls in a building. They are cutting their hair and doing makeup. They are wiping or rubbing their heads with the towel. They are doing this because their hair is wet. I see chairs and tables. Mrs. Barrett - In this picture I see women in a conference room. They are all dressed in early 1960's attire. They seem to be using towels to help them stretch out their neck muscles. It could be the start of a beauty regime that they are going to sell to the public. I see makeup mirrors, lipstick and different boxes on the table. I also see cloth at each seat. They could be looking at colors and how everyone has a color match for their skin.
Cooper (SMS)
A lady at a shopping mall in Western Washington in Seattle works in a towel shop. Her name is Freedom. She sells towels. She has sold all these ladies towels and they are trying them.
Corbin (SMS)
This a women's night out and they are all about to do there makeup and hair. I say that because there is makeup and a mirror on the table. They are in a very large room with lots of people, they are about to rap there faces with some sort of cloth.

Betty is a model in 1964. Betty is a fashion designer because she loves to try on new styles of clothing. Betty is trying a rag that is supposed to get your hair dry in seconds. But she says it does not work. She want to try and make it better that the other things to get your hair dry. She wants it to the be the best of the best. She wants everyone to know her and her company's name a around the globe.
Citlaly (SMS)
In this picture I think this was taken place in the 1950s judging by the hair styles, the outfits, and the the black and white colors. I think these women are testing out the items on the table and the towels. They could be makeup artists or are models to show how good the makeup is. My questions about this picture are: why are they putting the towels on the back of their heads? And what are the mirrors plugged into?
Alexa (SMS)
This picture looks like it was taken recently but everyone is dressed to make the picture look older and in black and white. They look to be like holding rags or a carpet behind their heads. All i see is women and no men. On the table it looks to be makeup and mirrors on the tables. I feel like they are massaging their necks may they are in a class for fancy people.
noah (sms)
In this photo I think that this might be a little event. I think this because this has little things like makeup. This also makes me think that this might be a makeup tester. They might be doing this to test it to see if it stays on.
Sierra (SMS)
It looks like they are making some type of rug or matt to use. In the background they have a mirror and some stamps and some other stuff that I don't know what it is. And they have some different fabrics.
Class 314 (NYC)
Here are some of our thoughts: I think they are sewing a towel. I think they are involved in a makeup competition. I'm wondering if this is a theater and they are preparing their hair for the scenes. Maybe this is a hair salon and they are drying their hair. I assume they are doing a hair competition and someone may win who has the best hair. I think they are getting ready for a hair commercial and they are messing up their hair to make it stylish. I'm wondering why they are putting towels around their necks.
Peach (SMS)
I think this women in United Kingdom or in China people making rugs for people who need them and to send them to the United states , or they're writing letters and taking a cooling break , or they're running a salon . Why I think this is because of the supplies on their table the faces and how they are dressed and how they are meditating .
Cathan (SMS)
It looks as maybe they are making rugs. The stuff on the desk looks like mirrors so maybe they need to see what there doing on both sides, maybe sowing them or fixing the rugs or what at least looks like rugs. They may be putting the rug or clothing behind there head to roll them together or keep them in that position.
Alston (SMS)
The group of woman are testing the strength of the rugs because the rugs are behind their necks and they are pulling the rugs side to side.
Angela and Anhelina (wasinton)
I thing they are doing some kind of experiment
eban (washington)
We think that the people are doing a hot towel behind the neck challenge.

In this picture I think that they are having a girl meet up and doing something with a thing that looks like a rug. It looks like they are doing with makeup because there is perfume or lipstick on the table, and there is a mirror.
malakai and Daniel (america)

briar (sms)
it looks like there in like some kind of spa and there putting hot towels on their neck
Fiona (pcs)
From my observations, I believe this photo was probably taken in the 50s or 60s due to the way the women are dressing and the items which surround them. If you look at the tables you can see items which believe to be makeup, nail polish and other items. The tiny mirrors also seem to be plugged into something. These women are possibly attending some sort of class where they learn certain skills, maybe the woman in the foreground is the teacher, but I could be wrong.
Donnovan (pcs)
@Fiona hi fiona why do u think they are from the 50s or 60 they have fancy roof lights and thats a good 2015 and maybe thats just how they dress :///
Kenzie (washington)
We think its a damp towl and pampering themselves because we saw mirrors and nail polish.
Peyton (vancouver washington)
we think that they are making a fashion product for their hair. - Peyton, and Allison
Larissa (Pcs)
It looks like a picture from the 1950's, they are all white female and are all dressed in classy dresses or classy skirts and shirts, all of their hair looks short and either black or brown. It looks like they are holding rugs or rags behind their head and it also looks like there are some sort on sewing machine on the tables along with other fabric or string of some sort.
Shailey (SMS)
It looks like the women are at a spa and they are putting towels on the back of their heads. They are about to do the treatment after they sit down from holding their heads by the towels. They seem like they are getting ready for something because they are dressed very nicely and they all have something to get ready by, like they have a mirror, towels, and it looks like nail polish, and they have other things too.
Ben (sms)
they are have a spoon day in a spoon/hair cut store for each one cut there friend hair
sophia,desa,nery (washinton )
nery and sophia and me thinks its makeup or something and their fixing their hairs
Aaron (SMS)
I think they are at a spy or somewhere you get your nails done and now they are putting a towel over there neck so they can cool down. Or the women might be playing a game.
Kayley (SMS)
They might be doing that because they just got their hair done and it is wet so they might be drying it or they could be doing that because they don't want to get razor burn or they could be rotating the towel back and forth to get all the hair off their neck.
Stephanie (Daytona Beach)
-In this image, there are a group of women taking a class for some kind of trade, maybe for a salon, or a home economics study. The instructor is in the center, forefront of the image leading the other ladies in a certain practice. This image looks to have been taken in the 1950s or 60s. -I suggest this to be a class or training course since they are all doing the same thing with the towel, which also suggests that this might be related to salon training or something. Also, all of their work stations have the same materials on them, including pamphlets and mirrors. I suggest that the woman in the center of the image is the instructor since she is the only one on the viewers side of the table, while the rest of the women are situated on the opposite side of the tables. She is also dressed the most professionally out of the bunch. I think this was taken in the 1950s or 60s since the image is in black and white, and their style of hair and dress seems to be from around that time period. Also, the type of the class/training and the fact that they are all women reinforce the time period of this image.

I think they are doing a competition of who can hold a really hot wet towel on the back of the neck, I think this because theirs something that looks like a water machine. This picture seems like some people are testing out new towels for their necks. It's in black and white so this had to be quite a while ago. I guess women back then wanted to keep their necks clean. This might be in a barber shop actually because they have like mirrors and seats.
ethan (sms)
Mabye they are drying their hair or they are trying to look cool or doing an ad about towls.

In this picture there seems to be many girls standing around tables and chairs and it looks like files, mirror and towels. I think they are the people that work on nails kinda like a nail salon. they have towels around their neck because I think they are helping their neck because it got cramped up from looking down for so long. This photo was probably took in the 70's.
Brynna (SMS)
I think that their all hot and sweaty, and the towels are nice and cold. They are all women wearing dresses. Their is a mirror's and I think some paper, wires, and a couch.

I think that they are in a self pampering session. They are giving themselves a head massage. I think this because there is stuff on the table like maybe like a face wash or a mask and lipstick. They might be putting perfume on and painting their nails.
Andrea (South Kitsap High School)
it seems as tho they are maybe holding the rugs to maybe help with their hair and it seems they are very proper and it looks as tho there is beauty supplies on the table such as a mirror lipstick, etc
Julia (SMS)
It looks like the women are at the spa and just got there hair done and need to dry in off with a towel. The only reason I think its in a spa is because if you look on the table there are these little tubes that look like lipsticks and also all the other stuff thats on the table it looks like makeup. That's why I think it's in a spa.
XE (Washington)
In this picture I see a number of women standing up around a set of tables with towels on the back of their necks. On the tables, there seems to be some beauty products like files, mirrors, and towels. The women around the edge seem to be mimicking the woman in the middle of the photo. Based off of the black and white photo, as well as what they are wearing, this photo was probably taken in the 50s or 60s. It’s a little unclear on what they’re doing with the towels though.
Mr. E's Class 2Even NET Academy (Norfolk, VA)
It looks like they have a crew. They have their own ritual.
Nicole (sms)
This picture might be about women who might work in a business that make towels. Maybe they are on strike for more pay. My question is why are they putting the towels around there heads?
Enjoli (South Kitsap High School)
I think that the ladies are doing some sort of relaxation party. An example would be like the Avon parties. I think this because they are all doing the same thing and they have mirrors on the table. The ladys look aristocratic from their outfit and would have enough money to buy the products. I think all the ladies know that the picture is being taken but they’re not all looking at the camera. Upon looking further there is a makeup type box in front of every seat further thinking me to think its an old-fashioned Avon or MaryKay party.
Jonathan (sms)
I think they might be giving themselves massages to their heads with the towels. The reason I think their giving themselves a massage is because they look like their rubbing a towel around their neck and it looks like they like it.
Mackenzie (SMS)
What I think is going on in this picture is that a group of women are proving that they can build just like men for like a protest or something.I say that because they have these machines or something in front of them that they can build or put back together it looks like and they are also blindfolding themselves. I see that there is also cords everywhere.
jadyn (south kitsap high school )
This is a photo of what looks like a meeting possibly a meeting to start selling something new because everyone in the picture has a towel over their necks so maybe they are trying out a new product . there are also other things on the table so maybe they are testing different products .
Kendra (SMS)
In this photo, I think they were in a meeting about inventions and they are testing heating towel to see if it works. This photo also looks very old so it was probably took in the 1970s. They are in very old timmy looking clothes too. My question is what's on the tables.
Maggie (SKHS)
@Kendra I agree with the historic appearance. I noticed they are all wearing very similar outfits so that must be the trend. I also can't tell what is on the tables. It looks like makeup but is not recognizable.
jaden (sms texas)
I think these ladies are checking for radiation with towels by rubbing. These towels back and forth against their neck. the thing on top of the desks are to track the progress.I think the mirrors are to check if its working or not.I also think they are all doing it to see if they get the same results.
Rylee (sms)
I see a lot of women with towels on the back of their heads and a bunch of equipment on the tables like mirrors and other items. I believe they might be people getting their hair dyed or washed. Are they supposed to do this or are they wanting to do this just for fun? I think it might be for fun and they wanted to see what they would look like so that's why they have mirrors on the tables. I can tell that this picture was taken back in the 1900's like 1970's because on how they are dressed.
PHB (Fermont)
A group of women testing makeup products, because we can see on the tables some makeup and mirrors. It's in 50's of 60's. The women are all well dressed.
William (Georgia)
In this picture I believe that the women are posing for a picture. I believe this because they are all dressed up and have nice hair. Also the girl up front is smiling for the picture. The picture will be for a hair and nail salon opening. I believe it would be a hair salon because of there nice hair and the mirror to the left of the girl up front. The reason I think nails is because it looks like they have color options on the table. That is what I think about this picture.
Reece (Atlanta Georgia)
In this picture there are a group of ladies enjoying themselves in a building of some sort. I think they have these towels around their neck for relaxation. I think their doing makeup because I see mirror and makeup on the table. The ladies are very fancy so they could be getting ready for a party. There's also one girl in the middle that could be teaching people. Maybe if the rugs are not for relaxation It could be for exercising. This is what I think about this picture paragraph.
Ana (Atlanta)
In this picture I think the women are in a class because the women that is in the middle is teaching them how to stretch their necks. Some of the women that are stretching their necks is by using a towel. I think this because the women is putting their heads back, down or straight forward. The women in the middle is the leader. I thinks this because everyone else is behind the tables and behind her. In this picture there are no boys in the room only women. I thinks this because the place looks like were a women would work. I think this class is only for women.
mka (bh)
i think that this pic was taken quit some time ago and that those lady are all doing the same job probably making clothes
Alex (Atlanta, Georgia )
I think the people in the picture are in a towel company. I think this because they all have towels and are testing out a new type of towel and how effective it is. If you look closely at the towels you can see that there are made of a soft material and it’s a heavery towel. Also if you look down at the tables you will see mirrors, magazines, and cloths. Also the hair styles, clothes, fabrics, color of picture, and the office make me think it’s the 1950’s. Also colored pictures weren’t made officially until 193. Also I notice that it’s all women and there are only white people as well.
Matthew (Atlanta)
In this picture I think that the people in this picture are working for a towel company. For one thing it looks like they have towels. My next point is that they look like they could have lived some time in the 1970s. This makes sense because at this point in time towel production was probably not automated. The reason I think that the ladies are making towels is because they have fabric. This could also make sense because there are chairs that they could be working in. In closing I would like to say that they are working for a towel company.
Gigi D (LCMS)
In this picture I can tell that the picture was taken a while ago. I know this because the way that the women are dressed, and because the picture is in black and white. This picture could be a meeting. I know this because there are many women surrounding the tables. In this picture all of the women are doing the same thing so that might mean that the possible meeting is for something involving that. In conclusion this is a picture of women a long time ago that were holding a meeting.
srvt (Saxtons River, VT)
Nathaniel It looks like they are shaping hair, with their towel. They might be testing a hair product. It seems to be a lot of makeup on the table too. All of the women are doing the same thing too.
stamina (Bruges, Belgium)
We think the women on the picture aren't women, but actually men dressed up as women. They just did their make-up at a home party. They are holding a piece of fabric in their necks to protect their hairdo while doing the make-up. We are conflicted about the date of the picture. Based on the clothing and antique looking place mats on the table, we'd say 50's of 60's, but the ceiling and the couch on the left look quite modern.
Taylor M (LCMS)
This picture is set in earlier years. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the ladies are wearing older clothes. Additionally this picture depicts that the ladies are most likely testing a women’s hair product. I can infer this since all the women are holding a towel behind their necks and leaning back as if waiting for results. From the product they are testing, I can infer it is a shampoo product. This is since the towels are most likely for their hair to dry. All in all, I can infer the women in this picture are all testing out a new hair shampoo product on the 1940’s or 1950’s.
Lily (Alta iowa )
I believe that the 8 girls at the back are trying the girl in the center's beauty samples because of the mirrors and make up products. The towels on the table are for them to clean up the make up after testing it. I think the towels that they have behind their arms and lifting with their hands is probably some kind of exercises after they finished because their hands and arms might be tired after there done. I believe this picture was taken back in the mid 1900's because of the black and white photo and the way they have their hair style, also their clothes.
Sadie P (California)
Based on the hairstyles and clothing, I would say this picture is from the 60s. The women appear to be in a powder room, fixing their hair during a break. I would say these women are in a professional setting, based on clothing and the appearance of the room. They appear to be towling their hair off.
christian b (south kitsap highschool)
In this picture i see that there is a room with people that have blindfolds around there faces and one lady has her blindfold halfway around there place, i say this because i am looking at it with my own two eyes, i can also see that there is tables around all of them with a paper of some sort on the tables.
Sandra (SKHS)
In the picture it looks like these women might be at some type of conference of some sort. It also looks like they may be trying or doing an activity, a teambuilder. I say this because of the setup of the environment. And also it looks like the era might be different, like maybe 1950’s. I say this because of the way the women are dressed and their hairstyles.
Blake Baldschun (SKHS)
In this picture i see that there are a lot of women holding a towel around their head. I think this may be a commercial or a ritual of some sort
Michelle K (SKHS)
I think this image is of a fancy hair salon or a women’s club of some sort. Every person in there looks really professional. The woman in the enter is drying her neck with a towel or a piece of cloth, and most of the women behind her are doing the same thing. There are also tables in the room with things on them.
G Jap (Masterman School, Philadelphia PA)
I believe that this photo was taken probably during mid Autumn in the 1950s based off of the apparel of the women, and the fact that the photo is in black and white. Because I see that there are mirrors on the tables, and the women are rubbing the back of their heads with towels, this might be some sort of gathering or preparation for a formal get together or maybe just a casual rendezvous between friends. The women however, definitely seem to all be in a consortium of some sort. Their expressions appear to show that they all know each other, or give a semblance that they are at least colleagues since everyone looks pretty relaxed and comfortable. I think that the woman in the middle of the room could be the leader of the consortium or the person organizing this event, because she appears to be the center of focus. In addition, I noticed that there is a purse under the table which could prove my thoughts that this is indeed some sort of get together. I don’t believe that the purse would have been under there if they were working or testing a new hair product.
Hank (Philadelphia, PA)
A bunch of ladies are either drying their hair, are rubbing a sore spot on the neck, or are taking a photo or comercial because a lot of the women are holding stuff behind their neck so they could be posing or drying hair, or massaging their necks.
Sivan Frankel (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
The photograph looks like it was taken around the 1950s-60s. Judging by the way the tables are organized, and the fact that these women are in a large room that looks like a conference room, I think that this is some sort of conference or group meeting for women. I also see mirrors and what looks like lipstick on the tables. I think that this may be some sort of beauty-related meeting for women. The woman in the center looks like she is a leader, and everyone else in the room is mimicking what she is doing with the towel behind her neck. My guess is that she is teaching them to wrap the towel in one way or another, such as the beehive-like towel wrap that many women do after they wash their hair. The woman in the center could be the leader, or it could be that she is just leading this particular segment of the meeting, and other women lead other parts.
Nicolas Dorazio (J.R. Masterman School, Philadelphia)
I believe that the women in this picture are doing extensive needlework. Due to the fact that the photograph is black and white, it leads me to believe that this photo was taken around the 1930-60s. This could have been during the Great Depression. It looks as if they are making blankets or scarves or other works. The mirrors might be to look at yourself with your creation to see if it is fashionable. However, I might be very off.
Sabrina Mintz (Masterman, Philadelphia)
It looks like these ladies are at work or at a group where they're making or designing something. The lady is the front looks like she's holding a rug behind her neck, while some of the ladies in the back look like they're holding up towels or scarves, so I don't think that what's on the table has to do much with the towels or scarves. Maybe the towels are helping their necks that might be hurting.

I think it is a metaphor - smoke in the miror, the mirrors on the table, and the black and white photo show this. Because grey is on the black and white spectrum, and smoke is commonly characterized as grey. This could be a metaphor for how some see the world in a black and white sense. But that’s their own illusion, the smoke in the mirror, of how morally grey the world is. Andrew
8A Group 2 (Toronto)
We think that these women are working in a rug factory and they are testing the rugs. We think this because the fabric is detailed like a rug and there is a box and a tube on the table which might keep needles and string. They are also wearing proper clothing , their hair is curled and the photo is black and white so it might not be taken in the 21 century.
8A Group 5 (Toronto)
We think the picture is from the 1940-50’s because it’s black and white and the women are all dressed old fashioned. I think they are in a salon and using the towels to dry their hair. We also think this because there are mirrors and some other products on the tables. Group 5
Sivan Frankel (Masterman School, Philadelphia, PA)
@8A Group 5 I also thought this looked like a salon-related event in that time period, again based off of the mirrors and towels that the women are using on their hair. Do you think those little dark tubes on the tables are lipstick? That's what they looked like to me...
Danika (Toronto )
I think that they’re making carpets
8A Group Gang Gang 4 (Somewhere)
What is Going on in this picture? We think that the women are making rugs, and that this is based on women labor. The picture is also in black and white, so it might be saying that times have changed and that women don’t need to always wear dressed and make the clothes. 2. What do you see that makes you think that? They are in a large room There is a leader at the front The mirror things have a plug to plug into an outlet There are brochures and stamp-like things on the table for each person. They are holding fabric/rugs on their heads. 3. What more can you find? We could find out where and when this photo was taken and maybe have a small picture discription to tell us a bit more information

I think that the hair dryer failed and they had to use towels, they realized they had a towel sponsor and decided to make and "ad". This also might be just a adverisment how easily u can dry your hair, or maybe how conforting it is.
8A group 1 (Toronto)
I believe they are testing or using some type of hair product. I can tell this because they have lots of mirrors around and have a towel or a rug around their head/neck. Also it looks like the picture is taken in the 50s and the woman are well dressed.
Tian R (PCS)
It looks as though there are a group of women testing a hair product. They are drying their heads with the towels that are wrapped around their necks. I can tell they are testing a type of hair product because I can see a bottle they used.
miles (putney central)
I think the women are testing a hair product. It might be for shaping hair, as it seems that all of their hair is formed fancily. They have mirrors, which makes my point even stronger. They may be checking their results with the product in these mirrors.
phoebe w (pcs)
I think that a bunch of ladies are at work and their job is to make and or test the products. This product is for your hair, most likely to make it bigger. I say that because a bunch of ladies are in a room with a bunch of mirrors rubbing their hair with towels. I also see that this is a older photo because it's black and white and by the way they're dressing.

First off, I think these women are here for some ceremonial gathering. I know that this because they are all in a group like they are meeting and they are all dressed in formal attire. Furthermore, they are probably testing a hair product for a company. I can tell this because they have mirrors in front of them like they are going to be looking at something like their hair. Another thing I can draw from the picture is that the women just got their hair done and are trying to keep it from messing up. I know this because all of the women are holding towels on their hair so this could mean they are trying to keep their new hairstyle from ruining. In essence, from this photo I can conclude that this is a group of women who just got their hair done and they don’t want to mess it up.

the people in the picture look like they may be testing a hair product since they are all holding towels and have mirrors at the chairs where they might have been sitting. this picture was taken a while back and i know this because the picture is taken in black and white and the clothes are from the 50's or 40's

This looks like there are a bunch of different representatives from different companies who have come together and are trying out something that another company has invented. The lady in the front is the one from the main company, so she is showing off the invention, so other companies will support it, or buy it from them.
olivia.B (Evans middle school)
It looks like a women's club because the room that they are in is nice looking.During the club i think they are doing a neck rugging activity for their club.

i think maybe these women are doing something at an old-time salon because of the mirrors and something that looks ike nailpolish
Ria Tamrakar (EMS)
In this picture, I think that the women are giving themselves rest, or a massage. I know this because, the women are wrapping their neck in a towel, which is a way to relieve pain. I can see that is in a working area, maybe an arts and crafts working facility of some sort. I can also tell that this is an old picture because it is in black and white.

This picture was taken in the 1940’s to 1950’s. I know this because the photo is in black in white, which means this was taken in a time period where color pictures were not possible. In addition, the ladies in the picture are dressed and styled in old fashioned clothes and hair. Also, these women are most likely testing a women’s hair product. I can infer this since all the women are holding a towel behind their necks and leaning back as if waiting for results. Additionally, there are mirrors on the table, which could be used for the women to look at their hair. From the product they are testing, I can infer it is a shampoo product. This is since the towels are most likely for their hair to dry. In addition, the papers on the tables could be instructions on how to use the specific shampoo. Based on this, I can infer the women in this picture are all testing out a new hair shampoo product on the 1940’s or 1950’s.

In this picture, there is a group of women who need to take a break from what they are doing. I know this because they are all holding some sort of towel around their head, which could indicate that they are resting in a way. This image takes place in the 1900’s, probably around 1940. I know this because they are all wearing old fashioned clothes, and the picture is in black and white. The women in the picture work for some kind of newspaper company. I know this because there are a bunch of papers on tables, and they all have stamps next to them. Based on the evidence, there is a group of women from a long time ago who make newspapers, and are taking a break from their job.

In this picture, this is a female-dominant job. I know this because the entire room is full of females, even in the background there are no males surrounding the people there. Additionally, this is a picture set in the late 1940s, early 1950s. Not only is the picture black and white, but the clothing styles of the females are ones typically seen from scenes dating back to the 40s and 50s. Furthermore, this is a picture of female workers protesting their current job conditions. The picture shows all of the females in one, consecutive stance holding the same object behind their heads. Also, of the people in the room are away from what appears to be their work stations, and most are not even looking at the desks. Because of the coloring of the photo clothing, gender of the people portrayed, and the activities of these women, I can conclude that this is a female protest against work conditions that happened in the 1940-50s area.

Kevin K. (LCMS)
In the picture i can see that by the color of the picture it is from a long time ago, probably the 60’s to the early 70’s. This is because it is in black and white, a common color style of pictures for that era of time as they did not have as high class photography tools as today. Also in this picture, I can see the women are wearing an older style of petticoats and dresses. This detail helps to show this picture is of a long time ago because the clothes are of an older style, making the date farther away. Lastly, the style of the women’s hair helps to show it is the 60’s or 70’s because of the way they have it styled. This is because in the 60s and 70s, women were known for having shorter hair as it was the style of the time. All in all, I feel that this is a picture of women taken in the 60s to 70s because of the color of the picture, the style of clothing and the style of hair.

VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Youngcolumbus A.K.A Micah Flowers Many comments today have suggested that the action in this picture might have to do with sewing. You wonder if this is a ritual of some kind or a statement about making clothes and not being fairly compensated for that work. What more can you find?

In this image it seems as if there are women working in some sort of salon. I know this because if you look closely on the tables there are mirrors and what looks to be maybe makeup. This could also be known as a salon because there is a women in the front of the picture rubbing a towel on the back of her neck with all of the other women in the background copying what she is doing. I also notice that on the tables there are some sort of pamphlets. These pamphlets could represent that these women are touring a beauty school with the women in the front middle of the picture being the instructor. Also, the picture was taken in black and white. This could indicate that the picture was taken in the 60s or 70s. I know that this picture could’ve been taken in the 60s or 70s is because of the womens hairstyles. Therefore, this could be a beauty school that only women are allowed to tour.

n this picture, there is a large group of women in a salon. I know this because all of the women are holding towels below their heads and there are many mirrors on the tables. Moreover, there is a women demonstrating and teaching the others how to do something. I know this because she is standing in the middle facing the opposite way from the people and most of them are looking at what she is doing. Furthermore, this picture was taken in an earlier time period. I know this because the photo is black and white, the style of clothes the women are wearing is old, and their hairstyles. All in all, this picture was taken back in the day, at a salon.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Victoria K In your view there is a teacher demonstrating to others how to do something. You have noticed she is in the front, with her back to the others, and most of the women are looking at her. What about their clothing and hairstyle seems old to you?

This weeks picture looks like it could be taken recently but they are impersonating people from an older era. I know this because the camera quality of the picture looks like it could be taken on a newer model of a camera, but they way the women are dressed suggests that they could be impersonating the way women dressed many years ago. The setting of this picture is most likely a banquet hall. I know this because behind them is a large room with high ceilings and a divider between the room they are in and the one behind them. The women in the photo could possibly be there for a meeting because on the tables around them are towels in front of every chair on top of a place mat, with mirrors scattered throughout the table. Overall, this is a picture of people dressing up like women from a different era for some sort of meeting in a banquet hall.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Emily H You have made some new observations in our discussion today about the location we are looking at. You see that the room has high ceilings and what looks like a divider between rooms, and you conclude that this as a banquet room. The high quality of the photo makes you wonder if this scene is staged to look like an earlier era, with women dressed as they did long ago.
Sophia G. (LCMS)
In this photo, there are a group of women standing in a room holding towels behind their heads, possibly to advertise something. I know this because on the tables surrounding the women in the room, there seem to be newspapers and stamps of different sorts layed out. Additionally, at every table there is some sort of mirror sitting on the top, possibly so the women can see this product that they’re advertising. I know this because when testing out a cosmetic product or a product for the hair, you would typically look in the mirror to see the results for how it looks on you. Even so, the women all seem to be tilting their head down toward the mirror in front of them placed on the table top. In addition, every woman in the room is holding a towel behind their head, which could suggest that the product their testing out is a hair product. I know this because the towels are placed on the backs of their heads, as if they are drying their hair. Based on the evidence, a group of women are testing and advertising a product involving hair.
Addie D. (LCMS)
This picture was taken in the twentieth century. I know this because the women are in old-style outfits and the picture is in black and white. The women in this picture are participating in some kind of beauty experiment. I know this because there are mirrors and beauty products on the table. I know this is some sort of experiment because they are covering their faces with blindfolds, which isn’t a normal part of a beauty routine. Furthermore, I can infer that this picture was taken inside a room. I know this because i can see walls, a ceiling and a floor. Based on the evidence, this is an old picture taken inside, during some kind of beauty experiment.
Deiter (Duncker)
It looks like they are sewing towels or pieces of cloth together, but it doesn't look like a factory or warehouse. I wonder why everyone has their towels on their necks. It looks like some kind of tradition or ritual, but it is weird because they are in an office or something like that. From what I can see, everyone there is a female. Maybe they are discussing and trying out a new product.
Evan D (LCMS)
This picture was taken in the 1950s. I know this because the picture is in black and white. What they are doing with the towel is something spiritual. Everyone is doing the same thing with the towel, they’re covering the back of their heads. This is a women’s rights protest. I know this because every person in the picture is a female, and they’re all doing the same thing. All in all, These people are doing something spiritual at a protest in the 1950s.
Elizabeth Asamoah (Chicago, IL)
This picture makes me feel like women are standing up for their hard work for sewing clothes. They probably don't get enough pay and I believe they are standing up for their rights as women.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Sarah Valdez and @Ramirez at Tipton's class both have theories that the women are protesting or demonstrating either against their work conditions or for their independence. What do you see that suggests they are gathered to make a statement about themselves or their work?
Mia T. (LCMS)
In this picture, it looks like their is all women. This could mean that it is a job only done by women. Also, it is set in the 1940’s area, this is because they are dressed very old fashioned and the picture is in black and white. It looks like these women work for a newspaper company. I know this because the women have stamps and paper on their desks. The towel(s) they are holding could mean that they need more rest hours instead of working so much. I know this because they are holding them behind their heads as if are tired and need a break. All in all, these would are very tired of working and need more rest.
Alyssa M (Texas)
They seem to be posing so I think that they are posing for a picture that might be in an advertisement to encourage people to buy this product. I think this image was taken in the '40s or '50s because the image is in black and white and around this time color photos had not become popular, and because of the style of clothing that they are wearing. It was probably also taken in the '50s because the shampoo bottles on the tables are from the brand Breck which was popular among young girls in the '50s. They are advertising a shampoo because on the tables there seem to be several bottles labeled Breck shampoo. They could be holding up their hair with towels keeping their hair firm for a photo or posing for a photo. I believe that these women possibly washed their hair with Breck and are trying to promote the sales of the product which was directed as a shampoo for girls. They might be showing the results of the product on their own hair while posing for a photo possibly to be used for an advertisement.
Benjamin Chiem (Masterman - Philadelphia, PA)
I think it's like a makeup class or club because there are mirrors and things that look like makeup near the mirrors and manuals under the makeup.
Michael Fenerty (Masterman)
I think it is a picture of women possibly protesting for a cause. They might be protesting for equal rights, or right to vote, or protesting to get paid more. They may be ruining the towels they are supposed to design. They are probably mad at the owner.
Victoria A (Texas)
What I see in this picture is women holding what appears like a towel behind their heads as they are standing behind the chairs and tables that has a type of machinery that has a mirror attached to the top of it. I can also see what appears to be cloth and what looks like papers sitting on the table cloths. My predictions the women are testing out a product to see whether it has negative affects on someone. They could be testing on the towels they're using or maybe the items on the tables. I think that this photo is taken place somewhere in the early 1940's judging by their clothing and also how the photo is in black and white and not in some color like how it would be later to this day.
David W. (Masterman School Philadelphia, PA)
I think that this photo has some interesting things in it. It appears that all of the humans in this photo are female, so that can cut out a lot of the male-dominant activities or jobs. Another thing is that they are facing the same direction, and are all doing the same thing. One time when that would happen is a time or place like now, when I am in school. So this must be a informative gathering or lecture of some sort. The seats and tables all have a nice look to them, which should remind you of some sort of a conference/meeting room in a hotel. If you pay attention to the back of the room, it may seem like a mirror to you. But that is not a mirror. It is a retractable wall, much like one that they would have at a school, or a meeting room(as I mentioned before.)The woman are doing something that you don't see everyday-touching a long towel to their hair. You can tell that their hair are dry, which eliminates the possibility that they are drying their hair. The tables have many objects that you would see at a salon of some sort, and that also fits in with all of them dressed nicely and being female. But the towels have no difference in color value, so they are not using the towels for cleaning purposes. And if it was a nail salon, there wouldn't be mirrors, for you are able to clearly see your nails without help. This can only mean one thing-the women are in a class to learn how to manage their hair. all the clues show that, but this comment is too long so I have to stop.
Ivan Gutsol (Julia R. Masterman)
For me it seems that this image is taken in in 40s or 50s. It is a little early to be 60s since it is black and white. The image shows women working together holding up what looks like rugs or table cloths. I believe that these women are tailors knitting or sowing a rug of some sorts. They have mirrors and knitting supplies but it could also possibly be a salon.
Zareen Khan (Masterman, Philly)
It seems as if the women are protesting something. The person who is the focus of the picture has a strong, stern face on with a slight smirk that shows she is not backing down. She may be against an unfair pay she receives as she is a woman, possibly working in sewing or embroidering. This may also be a protest against beauty standards, and articles of some type of clothing are being held or made. All the ladies in this photo look happy for what they're doing, as well.
Sophia (Masterman)
In the picture it looks as if the women are testing out a hair products and are using towels to dry their hair. On the desks, there are mirrors and there seems to be multiple of the same supplies that could be for each person. Everyone seems to be dressed differently, so that could mean that a company invited all these women to test out this product. If this was their actual job, they could have been wearing uniforms. Also, they would probably talk to one another and not act like they didn't know the person next to them.
George Siokos (Masterman Philadelphia P)
In this picture i think they are trimming the hair on the back of their head. They appear to be holding rugs, or towels to their necks, maybe to dry their hair? Back in the time of this picture, most women wore their hair up or cut it shorter, so maybe they are styling the back of their head hair. I see they have mirrors so maybe they can use those to cut behind their heads. it appears on the table that everyone has the same thing with what may be an instruction paper for hair styling.
Kristina (Masterman Philadelphia)
What I see in this photo seems to be women possibly using heated towels. On the table, however, I see some kind of packets of shampoo or some type of product that they might be testing. There are also sowing materials on their tables so they could be doing some type of clothing work. There are many possibilities, but I believe that they are taking a break at a designer job with heated towels.
Diego Of tiptons class (US)
In this image there appears to be a handful of women holding towels up against their necks. I believe the photo was taken sometime in the 50s or 60s because of their outfits and the type of hairstyle they have. I believe they are doing some type of procedure to better their hairstyles because there are a lot of mirrors. This being said, they are probably getting ready for a photo shoot or nice event because the building that they are in is very nice.
Hope A (Masterman, Philly)
I view this picture as women working in a factory of some sort. I see objects that I identify as fabric, some tubes (possibly makeup), and mirrors, but it is still unclear. All of the women seem to be holding a long piece of thick cloth as if supporting their necks. They are gathered around a long table made up of tiny tables with different chairs surrounding it. They do not seem to be in an environment with bad conditions. The main woman's hair and clothing style looks a bit outdated. Recessed lighting was invented around the 1950's so this picture could have been taken anytime from then. Overall, the photo looks as if women are testing some sort of makeup product.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Hope A you have provided a variety of observations about the location, the action, the objects as well as suggesting a timeframe for this picture based on the style of lighting. What about the hair and clothing style seems outdated to you?
Ucol (in Mrs. Tipton's Class)
There appears to be a group of women holding towels up to their hair. There seems to also be mirrors and some kind of beauty product on the tables. This makes me believe that the setting takes place in a salon of sorts. This image is black and white, and the women seem to be sporting hairstyles that aren't commonly seen in the modern day. This picture is most definitely from long ago, and I can tell from these clues. This is a beauty salon meeting and arrangement from sometime in the 60's.
Lily Sklaver (JR Masterman School Philadelphia )
It appears to be a room full of women doing something with a towel. They may be testing different types of fabric for the towels because each women's towel looks different. On the table it also looks as if there are swatches of fabric. Or, they are testing beauty products because there are mirrors and what appears to be a lipstick tube.
gabby (nrms)
I think that this picture was taken somewhere in the 1960's because their styles look old fashion. It seems as is they are all at work sewing for some sort of company. They have towels behind their head to show that they make tools or any product similar to that. There is a station for everyone. I think that they took this picture to advertise they they are selling hand made towels and things like that. Because these women are holding their towels up to their heads, these might be towels for hair only.
Jason S. (:))
In this intriguing picture, I see something that could be a beauty salon, with the woman in the foreground leading a beautification class. I see a lot of mirrors, which further enriches my point that this is some kind of salon or beautification center. All of the women in the picture look beautified as well, so this could be for more wealthy participants!
Hanna Sh (J.R. Masterman, Philadelphia, PA)
To me it appears as thought these women was possibly massaging or stretching their necks, perhaps after sitting in one chair and sewing for hours. Also, judging by their outfits, this might be in the late 1900s, also considering the fact that the photograph is black and white. All of those clues were gathered from the photo -- there are threads, sewing machines, and patterns. There are what looks like rugs under the necks of the women, which they could possibly be stretching. However, I am rather discombobulated, since there are circular mirrors on the tables, and some of the women appear to be looking into the mirrors for an unknown reason. Also, from some angles it looks like the women are building models of buildings, which are on the tables.
Oowarae Alexander (Masterman School ,Philadelphia PA )
I think they may be designing clothes or rugs or some other type of cloth. But that doesn’t explain the tiny mirrors. Perhaps they are cleaners and the have just specially cleaned the cloths and the mirror help to get a more up close look at the stain or smudge. Honestly I am very curious to find out what it is soon I think the answer will be interesting.
Jonah A. (Masterman School)
I think that this is an image of women sewing. I think this because I see that they are holding textiles, as well as seeing sewing supplies on the table. I see papers on the tables that look like blueprints, so they might be making a very large quilt perhaps. The women look sad because they might be overworked, or are being treated unfairly because of the times. It also looks like they are working on something fancy.
Ian Birley (Philadelphia)
I think that what is going on in this picture is as follows, there are women sewing rugs in a group. I think this because I see sewing machines in the background and all of the women are holding rugs or mats. It also looks like they are in a re purposed office space.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Ian Birley you have offered a new idea about the space being a repurposed office space. What do you see that makes you say that?
Ware (In Mrs. Tipton's Class)
This appears to be a room filled with a predominantly female group. This picture was taken around 1930s-1960s because it is in black and white while the fashion of dress is rather old. They may be testing the strength of the thread that they have used to knit the towels together or trying to see if they did well enough for it to not unravel. These women may also be protesting something as their faces seem saddened but accepting.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
Many of you are looking at the objects on the tables and there have been a variety of suggestions including testing products, either the towels or perhaps, shampoo, and others see that maybe they're sewing. What more can we find?
Julia Fede (Masterman [Philadelphia, PA])
In this picture I see women massaging the backs of their heads with light colored towels. I think this is a skincare/beauty class because there are sets with vanity mirrors in front of them and lots of other supplies. I also think it's a class for women, because as far as I can tell, there are no men actively participating in this activity.
Gabe (Tiptons class)
It seems as though, that these ladies are at work. It looks like this photo was taken a while back maybe from the 50's considering the way their hair is styled. It seems that they are stamping mail. Knowing that it is not modern, maybe this could be their break because when stamping they are looking down and their necks get tired. Rubbing their necks to comfort it is an older method of break.
Keegan (NRMS)
In this image you see multiple women holding rags/washclothes against their neck, they are dressed nicely. As well as the woman you see multiple tables around with a bunch of stuff on it. In the lower left corner of the picture, you can see that the boxes say something shampoo (I can't make out the first part). I think that this may be some sort of salon or something like that because of the multiple people having shampoo.
Kevin Varela (Mrs. Tiptons Class)
There is a many women in the room and some sort of machine. I think they have the long rag on the back of their neck because they could be making sure that their hair stays short because . I say this because there are some mirrors on the table and they can possible be getting ready for a party .
Isabella (Ms. Tipton's class)
This picture was taken in the 50's, this is shown by the women's hairstyles and clothing. These ladies are testing to see if putting a cloth to your hair and pushing it up will give your hair more volume. There are many women testing the theory because the more people the more accurate the results will be.
Cesar (SMS)
i see a place where there are only women and it looks like they are working and sowing and they are holding up some sort of towels behind there heads to maybe show how fancy their final products are and to just show that women can do a good job at work too and are as capable as man working
Robert Diaz (Texas)
I think we see women sewing as apart of a sewing class and they're testing how the quality was of the knitting by rubbing it behind their heads and pulling on it to make sure its durable at the very least.
Sofia (Texas )
I see women dressed in classy clothing holding towels behind their neck. It seems that they might be sewing because of the tools they have in their tables. It seems to be an older photograph because it is black and white.
Ethan (TX)
I can see what appears a group of women holding rugs behind their heads. This picture seems to have been taken in either the 50's or 60's. Based on that time period, I believe this is a group of women getting together to protest poor work conditions.
Erin Cobb (NRMS Mrs. Tipton's Class)
I think the woman in the forefront is teaching a sewing class because there are sewing supplies everywhere. I don't believe this is a factory because the women are all wearing nice clothing instead of uniforms and this room looks too nice to be a factory.
Hunter (ms Tiptons class) (El Paso TX)
They appear to have vanity mirrors as well as some makeup. i believe they are at a pagent or some other event and are collectively trying to look their best
Tino K. (Masterman Philadelphia)
Since there are utensils and work spaces set up, I think the women are making a craft. Based on the towels behind their heads, I think they are making towels although they could be rugs. This is my theory: the women were hired by a towel company to make very soft rugs for customers. The women finished the towels, but they needed to test the softness of it. They rubbed the towels on the back of their necks as the neck is a very sensitive part of the body to test the softness, which is what they are doing right now. Furthermore, these towels seem to be expensive as the towels are embroidered and white or a light color.
Rafael Alicea (Mrs.Tiptons class)
It seems that this is a group or committee of woman.Because of their hairstyles and clothing i am guessing this is in the 1960's. In conclusion i think this is a housewife commite were they learn day to day essentials to help them improve in their daily lives dating back to 1965.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Rafael Alicea Mrs. Tiptons class has provided us with many ideas today. You have an idea that these women form a committee of housewives and perhaps they are together to learn. What do you see that makes you say they are housewives? And more can you find?
sera (nrms)
I think that this is in the fifties or the sixties because of the was the women are dressed and braces the photo is in black and white. They appear to all be wearing scarves so I think that they are testing a specific product. They also have mirrors so they might be testing it to see if it hods up to specific tests. They also all have a beauty product or makeup set up at their station. The scarves all appear to be the same.
andy lopez from ms tiptons class (elpaso tx)
so it looks like they have a job that they're doing and maybe the pay isn't the best cuz its old and they're women and this image looks old and maybe they just screamed towel break!!!!! and they all got out they're towels and did a lil shake with the fellow girls
Abel (Mrs. tipton)
the wamon are scrubbing the back their heads
Bethany kovanda (tiptons class)
it looks like the women are taking what seems like a sewing class, they are all putting some kind of rolled up fabric behind their necks, it could be a trick to help with something. maybe they do that every once in a while because their necks begin to hurt after sewing for so long.
Sarah Valdez (Tx)
This looks like a feminist protest at a beauty salon, the towels on their heads and necks maybe represent that they can take care of themselves and have a right to be independent.
Lauren L. (Mrs. Tipton's Class)
In this picture is several women in a room. They all appear to be placing and/or rubbing a towel on the back of their head. On the tables in the middle of the room seems to be mirrors and a sewing machine. I feel like the "towels" the women are using cold be something they made with the snowing machine because the ends look very soft or cloth-like. On the table also seems to be an instruction manual so this picture might be showing a sewing class. There are mirrors on the table so the women could be looking at there creation.
Ramirez in Tiptons class (Texas)
I see female workers protesting at their jobs by standing up a putting a rolled up towel behind their head. they are probably protesting for a better work environment for women. They are protesting at a nail salon.
Jesec Rios (Mrs.Tiptons Classroom )
I see a group of women standing around tables, rubbing cloths around their necks. It may be that the AC broke and their hot. They could also be scarves.
Noelle Morales (Ms. Tiptons class)
It seems as if they are in a beauty store due to the mirrors and papers with beauty products on them. The time period seems to be in either late 40s, 50s, or early 60s due to how there hair looks and their clothing items. Maybe they are testing a way for woman to keep their hair curled while the are sleeping because they have towels on their necks and it looks like it could keep the curl in. They might be trying a new beauty technique. Caption- In new store opened in 1961 woman showcase a way to keep hair curled with towels.
young.miyah (new york)
1. i see women putting a long rag on the back pf thier head 2.because it shows it on the board 3.i see tables , chairs , knitting supplies. 4.cause it shows it on the board
blah (mexico)
i see a bunch of women that are working and sewing . They also have towels behind there necks and they all look fancy. and it looks like they are sad . because of the time that they live in. and they look sad . and it looks like they are over worked. because they do not look happy at all and the room looks really small with a lot of people in it.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@blah Your comments consider the emotions of the women and the conditions they may be enduring. You suggest they look sad and might be overworked. You also state that they look fancy. What do you see that makes you say that?
javon (pace homei)
1. they look like they are sowing. 2. they have tools that look. like they are sowing. 3. rags that look like they are massageing their necks. 4. it looks like it by they way the are holding it.

they are testing a product. the product is a towel
PhilN (EMS)

Paisley S. (ems)
it seems as though they are wrapping their hair up, because their job requires them to be very sanitary. they might work in an assembly line, or a hair salon, and they are required to wrap their hair up as to be as sanitary as possible.
Natalie H (EMS )
It looks like a photoshoot for a salon maybe
alana r (Ems)
It reminds me of the movie the bird box. They close their eyes so they don't die from the evil invisible creatures.
Sarah D. (@ems)
It looks like they are preparing their hair for some type of treatment because it looks like there is hair supplies on the table.
Bridget (Massachusetts )
It seems to me that they are doing something along the lines of styling their hair. They are all doing the same thing which makes me think that they are trying to make their hair look a certain way.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Bridget you have noticed that all the women are engaged in the same activity, and that perhaps they are all trying to achieve the same result or style. What more can you find?
Anna (Massachusetts )
This photo looks to take place during the 50's as seen through the style of clothes as well as the hair. The women are treating their hair for perhaps a commercial or are test subjects for a hair care product.
Skyler (Nantucket, MA)
Perhaps they are preparing for a photo shoot by prepping their hair and applying make-up? You can see the beauty products on the table, and their already groomed/curled hair suggests that they could be applying shine or even just making their curls more bouncy.
Emmet C (Nantucket )
This seems to be a room full of women that are using towels to poof their hair. There is a box in the bottom left corner that says Breck Shampoo. This was a shampoo brand that back in the day was known for its advertising girls. Judging from the woman in the middle, they seem to be wearing make up. I am guessing that they are the Breck Girls and are holding their hair up while they wait to be photographed.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Emmet C Thank you for bringing our attention to a specific detail in this picture, the Breck shampoo, and for directing our attention so that we could find it as well. What other details do we find?
Maeve (Nantucket)
This photo depicts women who seem to be trying out Breck shampoo. Based on the hair styles and the fashion of the times, the photo looks like it was taken some where in the 50's. If they are not trying it, it seems these women might be about to model for Breck shampoo, and they are tryingnto make their hair look presentable. Based on whats on the tale, it seems like these women have also done their make up. The room looks very large and public.
riri (Massachusetts )
The photo looks like it was shot during the late 1900s in which the 'big hair' was the trending hairstyles. All women seemed like they are in a dressing room, very neatly dressed, making sure that they look perfect.
croland2121 (EMS)
In the photo, the girls are learning how to dry their hair maybe or they could be massaging their necks together. There are a bunch of girls holding a towel and putting it against their hair. There is one in the very foreground then more around the tables in the background I also notices that the picture is in black and white and it makes it look like it was taken a long time ago and the womens style is older too. There are mirrors on the tables so it is for sure a beauty thing
Daniel M. (EMS)
They are sowing things in a sowing factory.

this reminds me of bird box but by the appearance it was before it was created.
VTS Moderator (NYC)
Thank you @daniel and @Nathan. You both are wondering about the relationship between the people in the image and economies or hair care, like shampooing, drying, and salons. @Nathan is wondering if this image might also be related to Charles Sheldon who was an early 1900's American Illustrator specializing in "pretty woman" themed advertisements. What do you see that makes you acknowledge this artist in particular?
Marina (Nantucket MA)
This picture appears to be women waiting in a dressing room, holding their hair up the towels after trying a new product for a hair photo shoot. The women also may be trying out a new product, for they do not look like they would be models.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@Marina You suggest the women in the picture may be testing or sampling new hair products rather than being models. What do see that makes you say they do not look like models?
Henry Dupont (Nantucket High School)
The women appear to be preparing their hair for a shampoo advertizement. The boxes at each station say BRECK. Breck was a shampoo company known for its Breck Girls ad campaign. I think that these women are either going to model for company and are keeping their hair looking nice with a towel.
Nathan (Nantucket)
The Woman are possing to be drawn by Charles Gates Sheldon for an early Breck champoo advertisement.
phoebe w (pcs)
@Nathan That's a very interesting idea but I don't know if it's right.
daniel (vermont)
it looks like they might be learning how to dry hair. maybe they are going to school to open a beauty parlour.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Some of you are saying that the women look like that are drying their hair, but others are noticing their hair is already dry and styled. How do we reconcile/make sense of both sets of observations?
Simmons (portorchard)
i think that they are taking a brake from there job. i think there job is something to do with makeup because they have a mirror and i can see a small container that looks like lipstick. or they are doing some paper work because i see a lot of paper and the black lipstick looking thing is some type of correcting pen or something to cross things out with.
Keily (Washington)
In the photo, the girls are learning how to dry their hair maybe or they could be massaging their necks together. There are a bunch of girls holding a towel and putting it against their hair. There is one in the very foreground then more around the tables in the background I also notices that the picture is in black and white and it makes it look like it was taken a long time ago and the womens style is older too. There are mirrors on the tables so it is for sure a beauty thing
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hi @Keily - you are also noticing that there is something about the women's style places this image in the past. What in particular about their style puts this in a prior period for you? Thank you.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Eva R has pointed out that room looks private, not like a public salon that one may just walk into. What do others think about who this group may be - what could they have in common that brings them together? What more can we find about the setting?
Shurts (south kitsap)
In this picture i see a lot or women around a table with beauty products and they all have towels around there neck/back of head.
Cole (Port Orchard, WA)
In the picture it looks like the people who have the towel behind their heads are doing a routine in some kind of shop or beauty shop. They are all girls with long-medium length hair. On the tables there is beauty products. It looks like it was taken in the 90’s
daniel (vermont)
@Cole it looks like might be going to school to open their own beauty parlour.
VTS Moderator (Sonoma, CA)
@daniel What do you see that makes you say this setting might be a school that prepares students to set up their own businesses?
Matthew,R (LCMS)
This is a picture of a group of women at a convention or school for salon work. I know this because they have a bunch of mirorrs and beauty products in the background of the photo. In addition, this picture was taken in the mid to late 1950’s. I can conclude this because of the style of clothing and hair is of the 1950’s as they wore formal wear in that time. Furthermore, they are learning how to dry a persons hair after it has been washed. I can speculate this because, all of the women in the photo have towels or articles of fabric with them around their neck as if they are learning how to dry a persons neck after their hair has been washed. Therefore, as the evidence shows this is a picture of a group of women from the 1950’s learning how to dry hair for salon work.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hello LCMS, I just saw your comments in quickly and just want to say nice job on sharing ideas and the evidence you see to support your interpretations.
Skylar C. (LCMS)
The photo is taking place at a beauty school. I know this because there is a lady up front facing the camera rubbing a towel on the back of her neck, giving herself a message. While she is doing this, the other ladies are looking at her and copying what she is doing. The lady in the front is the owner of a salon. I know this because there is a big room with comfy furniture on the sides that you would find in a waiting room, with a second room behind it.. The photo takes place in the fifties or sixties. I know this because all the women are wearing dresses, and there are no people of color. In addition, the photo is in black and white. Based on the evidence, this is a lady who owns a beauty salon giving a class on a new messaging technique in the fifties or sixties.
Sarah M (LCMS)
In the picture, there is a group of women that are drying their hair with a cloth or a towel. I know this because the women are holding the towel on the back of their head near their hair. Additionally, the women are working in a salon. I know this because there are mirrors, tables, couches, and nail polish or lipstick throughout the room. This can lead us to believe the women are working at a salon. Furthermore, this picture is taken around the 1950s. I know this because women styled their hair up and wore mostly in dresses in the 1950s. Based on the evidence, a group of women is working in a salon in the 1950s.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@alli,s has brought in the idea that perhaps this may be a movie scene. Is there something about this image that make you think about whether this may be constructed or not "real life."?
Logan Hope (south kitsap high school)
In this picture there is a woman in the middle showing everyone else how to do their hair. Everyone has a table with a mirror and a roll of film? I can tell this is a old photo because they all are wearing clothes that would be common in the 60s or 70s as well as the black and whiteness and the quality.
Rebecca Y (LCMS)
In this picture, a group of women are working a salon. I know this because there seems to be old-fashinoned mirrors on the tables, alongside what seems to be makeup. In addition, the women are holding towels up to their heads. This could have something to do with their hair, proving that this could be a salon. This picture was taken in the 1900s. I know this because their choice of style is old-fashioned, such as the the dresses and hair that were common in the 1900s. Additionally, the photo is black and white, which was used when color film wasn’t around. Furthermore, this picture was taken on purpose. I know this because most of the women are looking directly at the camera. Therefore, based on the evidence, a group of women from the 1900s are at a salon posing for a picture.
Olivia L (LCMS)
In this picture, it looks like it was taken in an earlier time period. I can infer this because the picture is in black and white and when people take pictures now a days, they are in color. Furthermore, the women are dressed in clothes that people would wear in an earlier time period this gives you a hint that the photo was taken a long time ago. Additionally, the women look like they are getting ready for a fancy event or party. I know this because on the table there are mirrors on the table that they could've used to do their makeup, this signals that they might be getting ready for some type of party or event. Perhaps the women are using the towel behind their head to fix their hair in some way. Overall, this photo of women was taken a while ago while they were getting ready for a fancy event.
Joseph P (LCMS)
I can tell that this picture was taken a long time ago, maybe in the ’50s or ’60s. I know this because of the quality of the picture and the hairstyle and outfits the women have on. Additionally, it looks like the women in the picture are working out something with fabric. I know this because, on the table, there are supplies, as well as pieces of cloth in front of every seat. Furthermore, the women are testing the fabric they are working on. I know this because the women have the cloth at the back of their necks, around the next area. This could mean they are making pillows. As a result, my evidence shows that this picture shows a group of women in the ‘50s and ‘60s, working on making cloth, which they are testing like a pillow.
Allyson B (LCMS)
After studying this image, I can see that this it was taken far back before pictures could be taken in color. I know this because the image is taken in black and white. Also, I know it was taken a long time ago because of the ladies hair. Additionally, I can tell that this picture was taken in a work setting such as a salon. I can tell this because of the mirrors and bottles of nail polish that are on the table. Furthermore, the people are dressed nicely which is what most people do for work. Moreover, the people in this image are testing out some sort of towel or scarf. I know this because they are all using it in the same way and the woman in the front seems to be showing how to use it. Based on this evidence, this is an image taken a while back in a salon where workers are testing out a newer product.
Jamar M. (LCMS)
It appears that in this picture, The photo itself was taken in the past and not recently. I know this because the picture is in black and white which indicates that photos did not have color at the time. In addition, it seems that the photo is taken at an event organized for females. I know this because there is only women in the picture holding some type of cloth around their neck. This may be an indication of a movement to show women should be treated equally. Furthermore, the women in the photo must be inside a formal building because they are dressed formally and all have dresses on. Another indication that the setting is taken place at a formal area is the fact that the women are dedicated to the picture and no one is fooling around. All in all,the picture is of women in the past standing up to show that they are also powerful should be treated equally and not underestimated.
Erica S (LCMS)
This picture was taken sometime in the 40s or 50s. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the women’s haircuts look like something that was worn in the 1950s. Additionally, the women appear to be learning about cosmetics. I know this because you can see nail polishes, eyeshadow palettes, and other things that could be used in salons. Furthermore, these women are seen to be practicing drying their hair. I know this because you can see them in the process of wrapping their hair up in the towel in order to dry it properly. All in all, this picture, which was taken in the 1950s, is of a group of women, who are training to be salon workers, practicing drying hair.
Eva R (LCMS)
In this picture it looks like all of the ladies are drying their hair. I know this because all of them have a towel wrapped around their necks, and they all are also holding the towels by the ends as to signal motion. Another thing I notice is that they might be at some type of beauty salon. I know this because there are mirrors and some type of lipstick or makeup placed at each seat. A third and final thing I notice in this picture is that they are in a private sort of group. I know this because they are in a small, enclosed room. In this picture, it looks like there are a bunch of ladies, currently drying their hair, while holding some type of private beauty salon group in a small room.
Emily H (LCMS)
In this picture, the women are at some sort of beauty salon. I know this because there are mirrors and chair set up along a table for people to work at. Additionally, they are all drying or fixing their hair. I know this because their all have towels around the back of their heads. Furthermore, this picture was taken sometime in the 1940s. I know this because the women are all dressed in skirts and heels, as people would dress in the 1940s. All in all, this is a picture of a group of women at a beauty salon, drying/fixing their hair, in the 1940s.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
There are many ideas that spark so many intriguing story lines here. @LMKS presents one idea, but also point out that there are mirrors on the table. How does that detail support or perhaps change your mind about your idea of what could be happening here?
Bianca C (LCMS)
The photograph shows a gathering of women. This much can be seen because everyone in the photo is dressed like a female and has feminine hair and features. In addition, they are in a dressing room. This is most likely a dressing room because on the tables there are many mirrors, lipsticks, and other beauty products visible on the tables; they are all drying their hair hair with towels as well. Furthermore, this is a backstage dressing room for what could possibly be a play, musical, or presentation of some sort. This could be concluded by looking at the papers that are all over the tables which are most likely scripts or music, and the dressing room is very neat like a backstage dressing room should be.
Erin S (LCMS)
This picture was taken around the 1940s. I know this because of the women's hairstyles and the clothes that they are all wearing. This photo may have been taken at some sort of beauty convention. I know this because there are many makeup materials on the tables and everyone in the photo is female. Moreover, the ladies in the photo must be at a fancy event. I know this because all of them are dressed very nicely, and they all seem to have their hair done. All in all, there are a group of ladies at a fancy beauty convention, in the 1940s.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
When describing/labeling the materials in the figures' hands, I'm seeing "rugs," "towels," and "fabrics." Other ideas and what in particular do you see (something about the material itself or perhaps how it's being used) that helps you decide which word to use?
Alfredo (Rochester ny)
The woman's work in a salon and the woman learn how dry the hair. I see a towel and thinks you can use for the hair. The women's do this because they need money.
Trent L. (@EMS)
It looks like it takes place in the early or mid 1900's. People are in a business building and they seem to be rubbing their hair with rugs.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Trent L. I appreciate that you are thinking about time period. What in particular do you see that makes you say that it could be the early or mid 1900's?
ghassan (Rochester)
this mean women working in the salon they doing towel in their hand to get relax they doing under her head the towel and when some bad sacred they are doing the towel under they hair
Raven (GA)
The ladies look lie they are working or doing some type of exercise.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hi @Raven - what do you see that makes you say this may be an exercise activity?
Lupe (Ems)
Women are doing something with that fabric on there hair.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hi @Lupe - any thoughts on what that "something" could be?
Hunter (Ems)
I see a lot of women rubbing a blanket or piece of cloth along their hair. All of their hair seems the same so I think they are doing their hair by rubbing that cloth on it.
Joseph Rodriguez (ems)
I think the women are drying their hair off at a beautician store after getting done with the salon part of the appointment.
alli,s (@ems)
it looks like a nail salon and they are on break ad folding the towels or from a movie about women.
megan s (ems)
In this picture, it appears that women are testing out the softness of rugs, probably in the 1950s, hence their hair and clothing style.
LMKS (rochester )
I think the women are drying there hair when they are done style there hair. the reason why i said that is because there a some type of mirro on the table
Tyler (ems)
I think that people are rubbing towels on their head to create friction for their job.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@KareemaGriffin and @Luke - you are giving us a different ideas about the activity that may be happening: fabric creation; neck strengthening; or maybe strengthening of the fabric. Thank you both for your interpretations. What do you all think? And of course, with your ideas, please share the visual evidence you are noticing.
Javier Torres (Rochester N.Y)
This is in a salon to learned how dry hair. I see towel and some material for hair. They can win money
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
Hi @Javier Torres - you are adding another interesting possibility. @Bethany S. had the thought this could be at a convention and you are thinking perhaps a salon. What do you see that makes you say this could be a salon, and not just s temporary gathering like a convention.
Maura (Evans )
Women are making fabric.
Bethany S. (@EMS)
They are at a convention, in which they are trying a stress-relief product.
VTS Moderator (Seattle, WA)
@Bethany S. - this is another intriguing idea. What do you see that makes you say that the setting could be a convention?
Kareema Griffin (poughkeepsie)
I think the women are creating fabric because they have wires and creative things in front of them as they put the clothe on there face at the same time
Luke (@EMS)
It looks like the ladies are straightening there neck, or they are straightening what looks like a rug.

Many of us are thinking about this photograph as it relates to the representation of gender or even gender stereotypes--e.g. gendered clothing and hairstyles, spaces (like a beauty salon), cohort (all-female group), products geared towards women, and even professions traditionally dominated by women (tailors, flight attendants, cosmetologists). Framed in this way, what more do you wonder? What more can you find?

Many recent comments draw our attention to the style and types of clothes the women in this photo are wearing. Several have pointed out that all of the women are wearing dresses or skirts, which makes us wonder if this was taken during a different time when society's expectations of what women should wear were different, and more restrictive, than they are now.
zhajknee nugent (poughkeepsie,ny)
I think the women in the picture are creating something ,they have some type of fabric on the back of their neck and head. There is a possibility that they could be making quilts and or towels for peoples use in the world and are testing the texture of it.
Riya (Marlboro)
I think the women in this picture are testing out a product of some sort, maybe a head scarf. There are only women in the room, so I can assume the product they are testing is feminine. On the table, there are mirrors which they might have used to see how the product looks on them. Based on the clothing and hairstyles of the women, I think this picture was taken a while back.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Thanks to those who are responding directly to other's comments. If you disagree with their interpretation, be sure to make an alternative claim and share evidence to back it up.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
The group has shared so many interesting hypotheses about where this takes place--a hotel, a salon, a bank, an employer's meeting room. Keep up the good work of considering the possibilities. Don't forget to share evidence when you make a claim!

The women are in some sort of beauty parlor/salon/hair treatment place. I can tell because they are all women, next to tables, with mirrors on them. They are drying their hair, after possibly washing it. I can tell because they are holding towels to their hair. Also, I can see that there is a mirror in the back of the room.
Gabriel (California )
I think that this picture is a bunch of people that were having a meeting and that they got to try out a product and the product is about towels and that these people get to try it out and that I think that they are testing it by seeing how soft the texture is or how ruff it is, so that they can improve and that why this picture was taken.
Louie (San Jose, CA)
I think that the image shows women protesting against the use of certain types of makeup and certain types of cloths and clothing. They appear to be in a meeting room at a hotel all posing in a uniformed fashion such as during the black lives matter protests. You cal also see nail polish bottle, mirrors, and a type of clothing or towel in the same cloth.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Louie let's dig into your idea a bit more--what do you see that makes you think that this group is protesting? Who might their audience be?
Nicholas Sangrey (Texas)
I would honestly say that they are working on different designs and strengths of materials for rugs and towels. What makes me say this is the design patterns some are not normal for a towel. There are what I think are pattern books on the table, the mirrors I do not understand why they are there.
Mrs. K's 2nd grade (Montana)
See: a bunch of women from a long time ago with towels behind their necks lots of tables and chairs, possibly a convention center black and white photo small lights on the ceiling mirrors/makeup on the table Think: These women are learning how to do their hair differently, dry their hair faster. The lady in front is the teacher. Maybe they are learning how to sell a product Wonder: What are they doing? Why do they have towels behind their necks? What is the purpose? Why is it only women? When was this?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Mrs. K's 2nd grade thanks for sharing your use the the Harvard Project Zero See/Think/Wonder routine! It's a wonderful tool to get us to look more closely, to develop evidence-based interpretations, and to formulate questions!
Eduardo (San Jose )
In this picture I see women testing out a product with there hair a neck and they're in the 60's because the picture is black and white and the women are dressed like if they are in the 60's.
Kately (San Jose, California )
In this picture it looks like there is a meeting going on but in the meeting there are only woman allowed, this looks like its in the 50s-60s because the picture is black and white and they are wearing the old school skirts and it also looks like there testing out a product with there neck and hair.
Omar (California)
In this picture, I think they are working on a salon, instead of people doing their hair they do it them self. It looks like it was back then like in the 60s.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@SY pointed our attention to the boxes on the tables that says"Breck Shampoo". If you look at the largest possible version of the image and inspect the box at the bottom left edge of the composition, it seems to read "Breck Shampoo." With this bit of evidence, what more can we infer about this photo? What does this new information make you wonder?
Grade 1/2 Gaines (Fredericton NB Canada)
We think that this is either a meeting room or a beauty salon and that they are learning how to do hair and make up.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Grade 1/2 Gaines thanks for joining us. What do your students notice that make them think this might have been taken in a beauty salon? A meeting room?
Isabella (California)
In this picture, I see women dressed as if they were in the 1950's or 1960's because they . I think that they may be having a meeting on testing a product. I believe that product is feeling whether that towel is rough or soft.
Danielle Vizcarra (California)
The picture shows women holding towels and mirrors. I believe that they are in some product testing convention.
Logan (Nowhere and Everywhere)
I think that the women are working with newspapers and are putting a wet towel on their neck to relax during break. I think this because they have what looks like newspapers everywhere and towels on their necks. They also look like they are at work. This photo looks old because of the clothes they are wearing and the fact that it is in black and white.
Fernanda ( California)
I think that this picture was taken some time in the past due the fact that the picture is in black and white. Also the women seem to have clothes from a different time and they seem to be in a meeting room because of how the room is set. They also seem to have beauty products on the table.
Santiago (California)
I think this picture was taken in the 1960s to 1970s because they are all wearing skirt and the picture has no color. It also looks like they are testing a product by pressing the towel against their neck and head.
kelalani (san jose)
i think their in a salon or something in a hotel because the towels could be part of it and on the tables it looks like there is news paper to protect the tables wich is used at nail salons also there are mirrors on each table attached to something that looks like those uv lights used in nail salons to
Angie (San Jose, CA)
In this picture I believe the time is around the 50's or 60's since none of the women have pants instead they wear skirts. I also believe that what is happening in this picture is probably some women are getting ready as shown by the mirrors (which are typicality used to apply makeup). Not to mention the little tubes which I'm assuming are lipsticks/other makeup products. The towel seems to be used as a way to fluff up their hair since at the time hair was usually puffed up.
Jasmine (cali)
In this picture, I can infer that they are testing or advertising for a product, specifically towels, because they are all putting the towels up to their heads. This could possibly be to feel the texture of the towels. I also believe that they are in a larger building, such as a hotel as the room looks like it can be split in two. The women appear to be from the 1950s because they are all wearing dresses and the picture is in black and white.
Lilian (California)
I believe this image is of a company testing out products. I see that on each side of the tables they have products such as towels, lipstick, etc. On the side of the items may be a pamphlet that shows what they have, how to use it, what materials are in the product, etc.
Bethany (California)
I believe that they are testing a product, which is a towel, to see if it can be sold to customers. They are testing whether it's a soft rub and the texture is not pricky. You can see that there are mirrors on their desks, which might give us a hint that they are testing a product. You can also see how they are dressed like the way in the 90s- 80s. The picture is also in black and white.
Mariah (San Jose, California )
I believe that the picture shows woman who are at a business meeting, testing a new product (specifically towels). I believe this because the woman are in a secluded room, rubbing towels on their head. I infer that one of the ladies rented the room (maybe a hotel dinning room??) to hold the meeting we see. Then, they were finalizing details of their new towel product!
Andy (California)
I think these women are gathered in this hall to test a product: the towel. Based on the quality of the photo and the women's clothing, I infer that this photo was taken between 1960-1970.
Lauryn (California)
I predict the picture shows a consultant party where women are testing products. Based on the picture, I believe that they were in the 50s-60s due to the fact that they have that haircut and... they weren't wearing pants...They were wearing clothes from the era. Another prediction I have was that they were taking a "break" from being the computers because back then womaen did a lot of math for important reasons.
Isabel (California)
I believe that this picture was taken in the 50s-60s because of how their hair is styled and how the women are only wearing skirts. Also, I think they're testing towels to feel the texture in a meeting room; which may be in a hotel.
Trinity (California)
I think this picture was around the time of WW2 because women were encouraged to go into the workforce while all the men were gone so they are most likely at a business meeting for one of the newer products that are in the making.
Isaiah (San Jose,CA)
I think that it could be a bunch of women testing out a product that was designed for women because there are no men in the room and it is a very large room.
Christian (California )
I think they are in a factory in a meeting testing multiple products. They are currently testing the towels and on the tables next to them have more products like lipsticks
Cindy (California)
I believe that this picture is in the 50s-60s because of their skirts. I also believe that they are testing a productfor women because it looks like a meeting room or maybe like a feedback room.
8lepage (Chestermere)
- an experiment/ product testing - measuring fabric - stretching - Looks like it took place in the past, 1950/1960- her hair and clothing - an old newspaper company -
Joshua (California)
@8lepage I agree, I think they are testing out a product.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Joshua can you share further evidence that supports the claim made by @8lepage?
Carlos (San Jose)
Girls in a meeting.
Joshua (California)
I think the women are testing out a product or something. The way they look seems like they are from the 50's or 60's.
makiah (ohio)
There is people putting some type of blind fold on. The picture is in black and white so maybe this was in the 60s. This picture look like they are doing the bird box challenge to me.
Lauryn (California)
@makiah I do agree with you that they were in that era. Although it does look like they are doing the bird box challenge, that it somewhat unreasonable knowing that birdbox was not a thing yet.
Bethany (California)
@makiah I love this idea, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case.
Lace (Loot Lake)
This picture looks like a mirror. But her clothes are changing. Or it could be a hair shop. Or probably a bank. It looks like its back in the day.
kelalani (san jose)
@Lace just because its black and white doessnt mean its from "back in the day"
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Lace can you talk a bit more about what you see that makes you say this photo is like a mirror? That the setting is possibly a bank?
shamiah (columbus)
in this picture there are ladies holding towels on there head in this picture there dressing like how old woman's would wear there clothing this picture look like it was taken in the 80s or sum
Christian (California )
@shamiah I think this may be correct because considering that the picture is in Black and White it might be later then the 80s somewhere in the 60s
Skkkkkkkk (columbus,Ohio)
In this picture there are women holding a towel on their neck. They look like they at work. They seem that they are in the 60´s or 70´s.
Eduardo (San Jose )
@Skkkkkkkk I agree with you that they're in the 60's because they are dressed like if they were in the 60's.
ceangelo (school)
I think their working at an old hair salon. The towels makes their hair bouncy. The image looks old that why i think it from the 50's. Plus the cloths their wearing looks old.
Kately (San Jose, California )
@ceangelo I agree with you because i also do think its in the 60s because there clothes looks like what people would weaar back then and the picture is also black and white.
Angie (San Jose, CA)
@ceangelo I agree that the towels are used to make their hair bouncy since that was typically the fashion the 50's - 60's
Gabriel (California )
@ceangelo i agree with you on your opinion but also their is a possibility tat they can try out a produced that they got to use
Lil ZayZay (Bronx, New York)
In this picture a girl is holding towels. I say this cause shes litterly holding towels. I can see that they was probally playing games. There all holding towels. The towel is long.
Imani Adams (Africentric)
I believe that what is going on in this picture is that the women are all doing some type of neck massage thing with the towels. They are dressed in some classic and they were all dressed in dresses. They kind of look like they are about to go do a show I say that because they almost all have they same hair styles. They might be in there dressing rooms because they all have a mirror in front of there desk.
Cindy (California)
@Imani Adams I agree with you because their classic styles somewhat represent the 50s-60s.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Cindy is there additional evidence you can offer to support @Imani Adams original claim? ?
piinkyiinky (Columbus, Ohio)
I think these woman are fluffing their hair or using a different technique to dry their hair.
Deanna (Ohio)
The people here are models and its break time for them. They're doing an exercise to were off the neck pain they're experiencing.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Deanna what do you see that makes you say these people are models?
SomeMentalKid (Somewhere)
I think the people in this picture are drying their hair or preparing it for something else.
Isaiah (San Jose,CA)
@SomeMentalKid That's an interesting Idea to go on that this is just a preparation for something else bigger.
Snipe God( Don't peek Zay) (Columbus,Ohio )
In this picture there is a woman holding towels.
yaboy unique (Hollywood)
A women's group or workplace where they are drying themselves off. We believe they are going to do a project together because we see the same materials in front of everyone.
Kna'Shante Bowers (Ohio)
In this picture it seems to be a hair salon and according to how the picture graphics are, it looks like its in the 1970's. they all have the same hair style and they all have dresses and black high heels i would say their curling their hair but i´m really unsure.their seems to be mirrors and stuff at each seat so i'm guessing they all do their own hair instead of the way of our modern day hair salon
Andy (California)
@Kna'Shante Bowers These women appear to be in a meeting/banquet hall based on the divider in the back.
Jayla (Ohio)
In this picture I see a lady doing something with a rag going around her head. I also see other people doing it in the background. It looks like its a class of something.
SY (Ontario)
By those women’s dresses we can tell it is taken in the 1960’s, and if we see clearly the boxes on the table it says “breck shampoo”, it is a shampoo company in the 1950’s. All the women in this picture are holding a towel or scarf around their neck, I guess they were doing a exercise to relax their neck muscles. And the woman who wears necklace and bracelet in the front of the picture, it seems like she has a nice job. So I guess they are flight attendant, the room can be their lounge because it also got sofa. On the table they all have a shampoo, it might be the sponsor for the airline.
Omar (California)
@SY I agree with you, the towels they use might be for drying their hair.
Jasmine (Cali)
@SY I agree with you! I also believe the women are from the 1950s, but for a different reason. The picture is in black and white, and the women are all wearing dresses. Where are the boxes on the table? I can't see it. I also infer that this may be a sponsor of sorts, but for the towels instead of the airline. I believe they may be testing or showing it off to others.
jaleah (columbus)
in this picture it looks like there is some girls holding an rug and they are all facing different ways. this picture looks like it was a long time ago and it is in gray and white. it looks like the women are in an meeting room having an meeting but at the same time it looks like they are doing their makeup.
Azavier (California)
A bunch of people are putting things around their necks. By the observation that there is no color in this picture, this was probably taken in the 1890s and 1950s.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Several have mentioned they believe this image was captured in New York. If you agree, what evidence in the photograph supports that?
@kvnye.b (Columbus, Ohio)
In this picture it seems as if they are testing ideas for a product. I GUESS
Cassidy (ON)
In this picture there are a group of women holding a towel. There is a mirror on the table used so the women can practice hair techniques. It says “shampoo” on the bottle on the table, leading me to believe that these women are learning how to style hair. The picture is in the 1950s-1970s because the picture is in black and white and color pictures were expensive during that time, the women’s clothing and hairstyles.
Mariah (San Jose, California )
@Cassidy I do not see the shampoo bottle on the table, however, multiple comments are describing this bottle, so I believe you Cassidy! I believe that this is a good inference altogether. Perhaps the ladies are cosmeticians, or have just been "practiced" on by having their hair cut for free! That would also somewhat explain the mirrors, maybe they wanted to look at their new hair style!
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Hunter and @Maiaa have both drawn our attention to what appear to be ashtrays in the center of the tables, and believe their presence is further evidence that this photograph wasn't taken recently. Today (at least in many parts of the US) smoking isn't legal in enclosed spaces like the one we see these people in. Those laws were not always in place.
H (O)
In this picture I see 10 women who what it looks like are in a beauty or styling class in about 1950s-60s. All of the women are about to tie either scarfs or towels around their heads. In front of them there are desks with mirrors and what looks like possible beauty products or hair stuff, and a scarf. I can tell this is back then from the clothing the women are wearing, the quality of the picture- its a bit grainy when you look closely.
Lilian (California)
@H That sounds accurate, and the person in the front maybe the instructor showing what to do.
Daysha (Tokyo)
in this picture, it looks like all these women holding towels to their head. It looks like a really old picture by the way their clothing and hair.
Carlos (San Jose)
@Daysha Yes mam or whatever gender you specify I’m just assuming but yup I agree.
Ashlei (columbus oh )
In this picture I see people that is holding towels behind there heads. Also I items on the tables like I see a mirror on the table. Also her hair look like the 50 century. Also I see couches and chairs in this picture.
YahBoiiJJ (canada)
In this picture people are holding towels over there head and this looks like it was taken in the 1900s.
tayLor (columbus)
So in this picture all these women have just got done getting their hair done. I think they are using the towels to fluff out their curls and make them bouncy.
Isabel (California)
@tayLor I disagree because although that's what it may look like, their setting seems to appear as a meeting room/banquet room. This may suggest that they are having a meeting.
iman locke-smith (columbus,OHIO)
In this picture there is women holding towels on there head. The women are dressed as if they are in the 60's. The women are at some type of work place.
ss (ON )
I see all sorts of different things I think it’s a nail place because I see nail polish on the table and I see this machine that drys out your nails after your done your pedicure. I see something completely different I see all women’s all wearing scarves and it looks like they might have made those scarves. I think they might be going somewhere maybe there getting ready because there are mirrors so maybe they are doing their makeup and hair.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We noticed that this picture is from long ago because it is black and white and the women have hairstyles and clothes that are from a long time ago. The group of women look like they might be trying on makeup because of the mirror on the table in front of each of them and we think there are beauty products on the table. We aren't sure why they are all facing the same way. They look like they are drying their hair or massaging their neck with the towel or blanket. We also had some people say that they could be making clothes or a rug because they thought the cords were to a machine.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
At least a couple comments mentioned that these women are exercising. How might we support that idea with evidence in the picture? How might we refute it?
Ava Ackerman (Newport)
Cord Papers Chairs Mirror Scarf Clothing Couch Lights Curtains
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Ava Ackerman thanks for sharing this list of items you see in the photograph. What more can you find? Can you craft a sentence that incorporates some of these items with the actions of the people in this photo?
dakota E. (Newport)
to me it looks like they are using towles as neck musoshers i see chairs tables
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@dakota E. thinks that the women are using towels as neck massagers. What more can you find?
luna (ontario)
What I see in this photo is some weird old woman in the 1960s time in this closed area and they have towels around their necks looking like they are messaging or FLUFFING their hair up with the towel because they all look like they have short hair
Hunter (Ottawa, ON)
Jan.14.18 I think what's going on in this photo is that the ladies are working at a hair salon in the late 50’s. I say that because they have towels or something around their necks. I say that because the objects around their necks has a lot of texture and a design on it. I think it's the late 50’s because there’s ashtrays on every table and the way they dress. The main reason is that it’s black and white. That’s what I think is going on in this photo.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Hunter, other than the objects on the tables, can you share what you see that makes you think the setting is a salon?
Mrs. Reibel's Class (Hoffman Estates, IL)
This picture is from a long time ago. We can tell by the way the women are dressed and their hairstyles. This looks like a meeting room because of the room dividers. There are mirrors on the table and the women are holding towels like they are going to wrap their head. Maybe they are going to try some makeup or other face stuff.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Mrs. Reibel's Class thanks for sharing! You are the first group to mention the accordion room dividers in the background. What more can you find?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Don't forget to read others' comments, and feel free to reply to their ideas. If you disagree, consider respectful ways of doing do. If something is unclear, consider asking follow-up questions. If you agree, share an additional observation or idea that builds on theirs.
Angie Moncayo (Texas)
The image here is in black and white indicating it could be from an older time period. This could also be seen by the clothing that is worn by the group of women in this picture. They are standing around a table with a towel around their heads. Sitting on the table there are mirrors, papers, what I think are more towels. From this contexts I believe these women could be protesting. I think they are protesting their jobs.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Angie Moncayo can you talk a bit more about how the context clues you mentioned support your idea that these women are protesting their jobs?
Maiaa (Ontario)
In this picture i believe that the woman are working in a factory in 1950 the place is located in new york they have ashtrays witch is totally 1950 based they have scarfs to keep their jackets and dresses clean or no wet it's probably a class for teaching people about how to do hair because there's a bottle of shampoo on the table and it's all 1950s based
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Maiaa what do you see that makes you say these women are working in a factory?
ree (el paso)
I thank that this is a group of women that have been hired to test beauty poducs. in thepicter you can also see that they are in new york do to it being on sevrol of the poducs in front of them .
Jordan (TX)
In this photo I see women holding towels to the back of their heads, it appears that they have multiple of the same items in front of them. From the items I can see a mirror and a pamphlet maybe telling them about what they are doing. I think that this may be a cosmetology class or a beauty class. I think this because they are all women from what I can see, and the set up looks as though the lady in the center is instructing them. They are dressed maybe for the 60's or 70's.
Paulina (Texas)
In the image you see 10 women but another can be seen on the left edge and more may be behind the camera. The women are holding a blanket like thing around their heads. The women in the center appears to be holding a towel, you can see that from the edges and if you look closely at the material. It looks like this is some type of class for women that is taking place in a conference room in a hotel. The picture looks like it wasn't taken recently, because of the clothing some of the women are wearing, the hair of some of the women and the picture is black and white. Each women has a mirror on their table, which are all connected by a wire. They don't look like just mirror, they have. a large base to them and all have a wire, so I have to assume that they are more than just mirrors.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Paulina is pointing out that there may be additional women in this room that weren't captured by the photographer, and that others were largely cropped out (we can see a forearm or towel on both the right and left sides of the composition), which reminds us that photographers' choices--who to include, who to crop out, what to focus on--impact our understanding of the story.
bernard (mrs. tiptons class)
In this picture, there are 11 women that had a towel behind there head. They seem to be at a makeup thing. they all seem to be older women. there could be more than 11 but that is all I saw. the lady in the front seems to be leading and showing them what to do
Patrick (Mrs. Tiptons class)
There is a group of formally dressed woman who all have the same items in front of them. They are putting a towel on their neck which might be for a test on how different types of towels feel, or they might just be doing it to relax themselves.
Ruth (Texas)
On the table there looks to be paper, a mirror in the middle of each table and some cosmetics items like a lipstick on the table. I think these ladies are studying to be a hair dressers and this is could be one of their test to see what they remember from there classes. They all seem to be dressed very nice so their family must have some wealth.
Carson Adams (Mrs. Tiptons class)
I think these women are rubbing a towel on the back of their heads, I think it is some kind of beauty experiment
tipton kenzie (texas )
i cant tell exactly what time period this event is taking place but i can tell by the hairstyles, clothing, and the setup and decor of the room that this picture was taken before the 90s. I believe that the female that is most focused on. Is some sort of teacher/instructor showing her peers on how to do something . This group of females are not diverse there all white so that also leads me to believe that this picture was taken in older times. The picture shows that the ladies have a towel of some sort and is drying there hair/neck. if i had to give this picture a title i believe it would be : Group of women preform a beauty practice in beauty cosmetic school.
C.A (Ontario)
In front of each chair, there is a scarf. Each woman has a towel over their shoulders and there is shampoo near the center woman which is breck shampoo N which was popular in the 1950s. There is also mirrors in front of each chair. This picture shows there is a beauty class for women in the 1950s.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Lots of us are curious about the machines in the middle of the tables--they seem to be electrified as they have cords attached--some wonder if it's a beauty tool (curling or flat iron, or "the first electric hair maker"), or a typewriter, or a sewing machine. Let's take a poll...reply to this comment with your best guess of what that is, and share one observation to support that guess.
Matthew (El paso Tx)
In this picture,I believe that a group of women are testing beauty products in the 1950's. I believe this because you can see them drying their hair with towels and you see bottles of some beauty product in front of them. (i don't know enough about makeup to know what exactly.) The reason i think this is in the fifties is because that time period is when women's work really began to boom.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Matthew thanks for sharing your thoughts. Can you talk a bit more about what you mean when you say "women's work really began to boom" in the 1950s?
Mariah (NRMS)
There is a group of women most likely in a salon. The woman in the front looks like she is showing the other women how to do something because she is in the front middle of the room. They all have some sort of "kit" in front of them, they also have a towel that they are putting around their head following what the lady in the front is doing so it could be a cosmetology lesson and she is the teacher at the time.
Jackie Mendoza (Texas )
The picture is old due to it black and white coloring, and by that way the ladies are dressed. What I think is going on is this picture is that These ladies are testing out a new product. The women could be testing out a new hair or beauty product. The picture is old due to it black and white coloring, and by that way the ladies are dressed.
Jonathan (NRMS)
In this picture, There are women holding what seems to be a rug or towel on the back of their heads. They may be doing some type of experiment, but i honestly have no clue what's going on.
Briana (TX)
This is a large room filled with women, looks as if its a meeting of some sort. The women have what look like towels and they are rubbing the back of their heads with it. With a closer look I can see that there are mirrors on the tables so what ever these women are doing they are looking at themselves in the mirror as well. The whole area looks as though they are in a meeting, it could be a meeting where they are testing out this new product, that you rub on the back of your head or place on your neck. The way they are dressed implies that this was years ago and so this could be a new product they are testing for women.
Alo McShane (Mrs. Titpon) (El Paso, TX)
Judging by the materials laid out on the table, this may be some kind of beauty salon for women. There are only women seen in this image. They have towels to dry off hair, dry off nails, clean up makeup, or perhaps even prevent making a mess at all. They appear to be performing some kind of routine to start them off with their day. These women are preparing for the current routine in their beauty salon to aid the idea that women can work too.
Brianna Leyva (el paso )
I think this could've been taken around the 1960s because the picture is in black and white. It looks like the person in the front is teaching them something about the way dry their hair when its done because everyone in that room have their hair done very perfect and nice, and they are all doing the exact same thing. There are mirrors and papers all around the table which could be about the correct ways to do it. They all seem to have very thick towels or some type of rug around there neck to help dry or do their hair.
Patricio (Mrs. Tipton's class)
I think that these ladies are trying out products for beauty and they seem to have some sort of rolled up towel around the back of their neck. They have mirrors and products on the table which makes sense that this is a beauty product demonstration. The rolled up cloth can be something for the hair maybe a straightener or it makes the hair stay in place.
Caidence (texas )
I noticed very soon after looking at this image that their are only women in this image. I see that they all have the same type of set up on the table like their working on a project or doing an assignment/testing something out. It looks like this photo is an old picture based on how the women look. Their hair, clothes, and the black & white photo. Maybe their doing like beauty school and or learning how to do a task for work. or maybe this is like a group of women who are all friends and are doing something together like "girls party" or simply a hangout and this is one of the activities to make something like decor.
ilyanna (El Paso, Tx )
From what i see in this picture it looks like these women are in some sort of training to become a hair dresser. Or i also thought that they might be conducting some sort of experiment because they have the same materials in front of them.
Justus Lopez (El Paso, TX)
There are some sort of machines that look a little bit like typewriters, or a cosmetic machine. The women look like they are taking a break, and they are all doing the same exercise.
a mrs tiptons class (texas)
so in this picture it looks like they are all doing something doing with hair . it seems to deal with only women as everyone in the picture is female. It seems as the female in the foreground is putting a towel around her head. the others in the room seem to be following what she is doing. She could be doing a lesson and teaching her cosmetology class. Theres mirrors on the table along with cords that could be connected to curling irons and flat irons.
Fakih (El Paso)
In this picture it looks like this is some sort of meeting. The women in the picture are all holding scarf near their ears, and I think that maybe they're copying the woman in the very front. Maybe this is some sort of initiation process for the group, or some sort of teaching. This may be some sort of working place because of all of the equipment on the table.
Zariyanna (TX)
In this picture there seems to be a handful of women who are rubbing a towel or rug on the back of their head. There also seems to be items in front of each person, judging by the room the women seem to be doing an experiment of some sort because they all have the same items in front of them and the same item that is being used to rub their head or neck.
Bryan ( TX)
This picture was taken sometime in the 1950's or earlier because it's in Black and White. There are a bunch of ladies doing some type of procedure with their hair or doing a project because they all got the same materials in front of them and the lady in the front of the picture is the instructor. It looks as if they're getting ready for a party or something similar to that category.
Alanna (Mrs.Tiptons class)
In this image there seem to be a lot of women. The women all have something behind their neck which seems to be a towel. If you look closer you can see that there is something that seems to be a mirror on one of the tables and other items on the tables. From the color of image it seems as if it may be a little older, I can infer this because the image is in black and white and all of the women are wearing dresses. From all of this I can infer that the women are possibly all getting together to do their hair all nice for an upcoming event.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Mrs. Livingston's 2nd Grade is pointing out that it seems that these women may be working on something as a team given that everyone has the same items at their station. What more can we find?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Some of us are really puzzled about what's going on in this photograph--and that's okay! If you are having a hard time making sense of the story it is telling, focus on the discrete details to find clues.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Isabella M. mentioned that these women may be wealthy, given their clothes and jewelry. What do you see that might support that hypothesis?
Carson Adams (Mrs. Tiptons class)
@VTS Moderator The mirrors and makeup on the tables
neda (texas )
in this photo it seems to be a bunch of ladies, based on how they're dressed, holding a rug to the back of there head. I feel like this is some kind of experiment because they seem to have all the same materials in front of them.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Some of you have pointed out that the figure in foreground may be leading, teaching, or facilitating and that the women behind her are following. Is there more that indicates this is the case?
Team Tompkins (Delaware, OH)
We think the women in this picture are hair dressers. They are testing out the first electric hair maker, to straighten or curl your hair. There are mirrors with wires that light up for the women to look at their hair and make-up when they are finished.
bella (Newport)
in see wires on the table i see grils piutting towels behind there necks they might be getting ready for a show
Mrs. Livingston's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
We think this a women's group or workplace where they are drying themselves off. We believe they are going to do a project together because we see the same materials in front of everyone.
Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
@Mrs. Livingston's 2nd Grade Good thinking! We agree that it is a women's group. What else did you notice about the picture?
Mrs. Livingston's 2nd Grade (Ohio)
@Mrs. Allen's 2nd Grade We noticed there are cords connecting to the mirrors on the table. We noticed the curtains or accordion door behind the women so we think it looks like a big conference room. The outfits look older so we think it may be from the past.
Isaiah Davis (Chicago )
I think that in this picture the women are posting for a picture in hoping to make a silent protest about the type of jobs women can get. . In this picture I see a room full of only women and it seems like they're holding a carpet around their neck. This picture makes me feel really confused
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Isaiah Davis is wondering if this is protest of some kind that relates to equal rights for women regarding employment. What do you see that makes you say it's a 'silent protest?'
Cayden (Newport)
I think that it is a business that hand makes rugs because it looks like there are sewing rugs and i think this is in new york.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Cayden thanks for sharing. Can you tell us what you see that makes you think this photograph was taken in New York?
CHEYENNE (Newport)
i see all woman in a building and it looks like they are doing makeup or nails and they are covering their necks with towels so they don't make a mess.the tables and chairs are in a rectangular form.this is in the old day you can tell by their clothes and hair styles.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Teacher and class pointed out that this group of women isn't diverse. What more can we find?
Kirsten (Newport)
I see circle little mirrors in the middle of the table. All the ladies have a towel kind of thing over their shoulders. It looks like it was back then because their hairstyles and clothes. There are all girls so maybe it is a girls party. Maybe they are trying to learn how to give a massage.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Kirsten is positing that perhaps this event is exclusive to women it appears that only women are photographed. What more can we find?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
A few schools of thought have surfaced regarding what these women are doing. Some believe they are prepping for an event, others think they are seamstresses making towels, and still others think this is a cosmetology, or beauty treatment, class. What can you find that supports one or more of these ideas? Have a different idea? Share!
Owen (Newport)
I think that some girls are doing some kind massage or make up thing because there's mirrors also it appears to be in the 40s or 50s because of the hair and clothes
McKinnley (PHS)
I think that some girls are learning how to give a massage, that's why they're putting towels behind their necks, it appears to be some time in the 40's or 50's because of the hairstyles and clothes. They could also be learning how to embroider things as they have needles and threads.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@McKinnley thanks for sharing! Can you talk a bit more about where you see needled and threads in this photograph?
Evan (PHS)
This is a photograph of a room full of women. These women all have hairstyles similar to those popular in the 1950s and the 1960s. It would also appear that these women are in some home ec class due to the towels, cosmetics, and other things like hand bags.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Good morning, all! Thank you for joining us today to discuss this photograph. I look forward to reading your observations and ideas and posing some questions to fuel the conversation.
Jenna (Nebraska)
This picture was taken in the 1950-60's based on the way they are dressed, and because the picture is black and white. I think they are at some sort of beauty school because they are all doing the same thing and it looks like it is related to beauty. It also looks like there are more beauty products on the table.
Zoe (plattsmouth)
looks like the ladies are getting ready for a meeting or they are just got done with a meeting. there are many newspapers around so that is probably what they were discussing.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Zoe is wondering if this photograph captured a moment before or after a meeting. Can you share what you see that makes you say there are newspapers in the photo?
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
Many of us infer this photograph was taken a long time ago given that it is black and white. Other evidence that supports and clarifies that thinking comes from a few students at LCMS, who believe the clothes worn by the women in the photograph date it to the 1950s or 1960s. Is there additional evidence that might support this claim?
Shannon W. (LCMS)
Based on this photograph, I can tell that the room is full of women. I know this because they are all wearing either dresses or skirts. In addition, I know that this picture was taken a long time ago. I know this because it is in black and white. Similarly, everyone in the room is dresses like they are from around the 50s or 60s. Furthermore, I can infer these women are doing something related to cosmetology. I can tell because there is makeup and nail polish on the tables. Overall, I can tell that there are women from an older time, doing something that has to do with cosmetology.
Lainey S. (LCMS)
The picture was taken in more of an earlier time period. I can infer this because the picture was taken in black and white and now picture taking has advanced to where they are taken in color. Additionally, the woman are dressed in old fashioned outfits that women used to wear which signals to me that it is an older picture. Perhaps the woman in the picture are preparing for some sort of event. I can infer this because they seem to be using a towel to fix their hair and behind the woman in the front of the picture there is a mirror on the table that she may have done her makeup on. Furthermore, the woman are getting ready for a more fancy event. I can infer this because of the dresses that they are wearing are more of fancy outfits that woman would wear for more of a fancy occasion. Overall, based on the evidence provided the picture was taken in earlier times and the woman in the picture are getting ready for a formal event.
Munickat (PACE Academy)
I see nine women standing at tables arranged in a horse shoe. They are putting some type of folded cloth around their ears, beginning at the back of their heads. They are perhaps learning to wrap their hair in cloth like some Muslim and some Hasidic Jewish women do. But on closer inspection, I see that the women are dark-haired, and are perhaps Arabic, Turkish, or other nationality. I say not Jewish, although Jewish women also cover their hair for religious reasons as do Muslim women. Hasidic women usually do not wrap their hair turban style as the women here seem about to do. I aslo see that some women may be missing from the room. There are chairs with cloth draped acoss the backs, as if waiting other participants.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Munickat thanks for sharing specific details--like the number of women pictured and that some people may be missing given the empty seats--and for sharing your wonderings about this image. This reminds you that women of various religious traditions cover their hair as a sign of modesty.
Isabella M. (LCMS)
After looking at this photo I can see that this photo was taken some time in the 50s or 60s. I know this because the photo is in black and white, and because of the clothing they are wearing. Another thing I can tell after looking at this photo is that this is some kind of cosmetology class. I know this because of the mirrors and nail polish on the tables placed at each seat. Moreover, another thing I can see in this photo is that these women are wealthy. I can conclude that they are wealthy by their dresses and their jewelry. In conclusion, I can see that these wealthy women are at a cosmetology class in the 50s or 60s.
Nicholas B. (LCMS)
In this picture there are many women testing makeup products. I know this because there are mirrors and makeup on the tables. This picture was taken in an older time. I know this because it is in black and white and the style of clothes the people are wearing suggests the 1960s. There are towels to wipe the makeup off. I know this because they are holding them on their necks and the towels are on the backs of the chairs. Based on this evidence I know that women are testing makeup products in the 1960s and have towels to wipe it off.
jaiheim bowen (poughkeepsie)
i see 9 woman holding rags around there head from what i guess is they where at church about to be baptized i say this because they look like they are dressed for church
Brynne M (LCMS)
In this picture it seems be taken a long time ago. I know this because the picture is taken in black and white. Additionally, This picture was also taken inside a room. I know this because I can see a wall and a ceiling. Furthermore, The women in this photo look as though they might be getting ready for an event. I know this because I can see an mirror to see what they look like and it looks as though they may be styling there hair in some way. In this picture it is taken in old times and it is of women getting ready for an event in a room.
Jackson B. (LCMS)
The picture was taken in a building. I know this because there are walls surrounding the area where the women are standing. Additionally, there are lights on the ceiling and on the walls which show the women are in a building. Another thing I noticed was the picture was taken a while ago. I know this because the picture is taken in black and white; which allows me to infer that it was taken a long time ago. Furthermore, I can infer the women are getting ready for an event. I know this because the women are either drying or curling their hair. Additionally, most of the women are wearing dresses or fancy coats. Based on this evidence, I can conclude that there is a group of women in a room, getting ready for some sort of an event.
Mark D. (LCMS)
This picture takes place in the 1900s. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the hairstyle also belongs in the 1900s. Moreover, the picture also takes place in a beauty salon. I can infer this because the women are learning to do their hair and there is makeup on the tables. Furthermore, the women are models. I know this because the woman in the front is posing for the cameraman and the women in the background all are looking like the one in the middle. In summary, models in the 1900s are doing their hair.
Kelly R (LCMS)
I can see that this picture was taken in the olden days. I know this because the photo is in black and white and because they are dressed in classy clothes and have hairstyles from back then. I can see that this is a cosmetology class. I know this because there is a group of women around tables and in those tables, there are nail polish, mirrors, and towels. I can see that the woman in the front of the picture is the teacher and she is showing the rest of the women a technique for their hair. I know this because she is in the center of the room, and all the women have towels around their necks. I can conclude that this is a cosmetology class taken in the olden days.
Anden B. (LCMS)
This picture seems to depict an older picture of people in a room. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the clothing is more old fashioned than today. It is clear that this is a dressing room ro salon of some kind. I know this because at every chair their is a personal mirror and a bigger folding mirror in the back. Without a doubt, these people are attempting to relax using an exercise. I know this because everyone in the room has stopped their work and they have a towel behind their neck, possibly performing a brain break similar to some we do in math. Overall, this is an older picture of people in a dressing room or salon taking a break from their work by performing a towel exercise.
Ms. Lattner (PS 199)
Our 3rd grade class thinks that this picture is old because it is in black and white. We see one woman in the center holding a towel or scarf behind her neck. We also see all the other women doing the same with the the towel or scarf. We think that maybe the woman in the center is teaching the other woman how to do something. We noticed that there is a mirror and other items o the table which might help them create the towel or scarf. We also think this photo might have taken place during a time when women didn't have as many rights in the workplace as they do now.
VTS Moderator (Washington, DC )
@Ms. Lattner thanks for sharing your students' ideas. Can the class point to additional evidence in the photograph that suggests is old and was taken at a time when women had fewer professional options or rights?
Sean K (LCMS)
January 14 This is an old picture I know this because the picture is in black and white. This is a gathering. I know this because there are people that are dressed nicely and there are lots of tables and chairs possibly for eating on. There are women using makeup. I know this because there are mirrors on the tables and what looks to be makeup. All in all, This is a gathering of women testing new makeup products to see how good they are if they were used.
Amanda W (LCMS)
In the image above, I noticed that the picture may have been taken a while ago. I know this because there aren’t many electronics that we have today in sight, and the picture is in black and white. Additionally, I noticed that there are beauty products on the table in the room. I know this because there are boxes and other items that are similar to products seen today. Furthermore, I noticed that the mirrors on the table are (in some way) electronic, or maybe have lights in them. I know this because there are wires that are plugged into the side of each mirror. Overall, based on the evidence, I can infer that this is an older image of women who were preparing for something by doing either their hair or makeup.
Luke P (LCMS)
The photo depicts a group of seamstresses. I can infer this as the women are standing a table which a has a sewing machine at each chair. Additionally, the women in the picture appear to be posing for a picture, possibly for an advertisement. I can infer this all the women appear to be holding the same pose, with a towel behind their necks. Furthermore, I the seamstresses are holding towels that they sewed. I can infer that they are holding towels because of the frills on the end of the cloth which is common with bath towels. Based on the evidence, I can conclude that the photo depicts a group of seamstresses posing for a picture to advertise the bath towels that they have made.
Tahlaya (poughkeepsie 12601)
I see a women with a towel around her head. standing in front of a table with towels on it. Theres also other women with towels around them .maybe there wiping sweat off their head .
Anthony B (LCMS)
This picture takes place inside. I know this because the people are in a room with walls and a ceiling. Additionally, this picture was taken many years ago. I know this because the picture is in black and white and the people are wearing clothes from a long time ago. Furthermore, there are only women who are doing their hair. I know this because there are mirrors and tools for their hair and the women are holding a towel to their heads. Based on the evidence, there are women inside styling their hair many years ago.
Jaclyn S (LCMS)
In this picture these women are getting ready for an event. I know this because there are tables with mirrors and they are all in heels and nice dresses. Additionally, they are doing a neck and head massage. Every woman in the room is standing up and holding the scarf around their head or neck pulling forward. Similarly, they are at a nicer event to show an item. The room in the back is very formal looking and the woman in the front of the picture looks like she is demonstrating how to use the scarf. Furthermore, these women are getting ready for a nice event where they are testing out a product to premiere at the event.
Owen (Newport)
I see a bunch of people standing around tables with towels around the back of there heads. This picture looks like it was taken in the 50s but i noticed that the lights on the ceiling look fairly new. I think this is a cosmetology class in the 50s or 60s because i noticed the mirrors and nail polish and all the extension cords on the table.
Aaron Bagster (Brisbane Australia)
@Owen That idea makes sense
Chase (Newport)
It looks like a older picture they are in a shop or work area they are holding rugs that they just made there is cloth on the tables they can use to make more rugs.
Larissa (Pcs)
@Chase I agree with this
Teacher and class (Pender Co. )
We noticed that all the women are standing and doing some sort of neck massage. There are only white females and they dressed classy in dresses only. They are in a very large room and they may be getting ready for a show. We say this because each woman has a mirror in front of them. It is in black and white which makes us think it is an older picture.
Monroe (llll)
@Teacher and class makes sense
