There are eight iguanas. Eight.

As with the terrific short documentaries from Mexico NYT published a couple of weeks ago, I am struck by the humor and humanity of these photos. It doesn't seem possible that the US will subjugate Mexico in any sphere, as long as they can laugh at themselves, namecheck death in a uniquely loving way, as they so often do, and simply ignore the beasts of the north, banging on pots and pans and yelling a lot to little effect.

Remarkable work.

I have been fortunate to have traveled through 28 of the 31 states of Mexico over many years. Ms. Iturbide’s photography captures the magic and warmth of Mexico’s wonderful people. I wanted to say that I have been there and seen the texture and substance of her art. It takes me back to traveling through small villages by back country dirt roads. Always an adventure, never knowing what you will find around the next bend. Thank you for the memories.

By chance, I'm reading "The Plumed Serpent" by D. H. Lawrence"(1925), about life in Southern Mexico a 100 years ago. His incredible ability to paint a scene in living detail produced images that were identical to the photos in this story.
The ancient religion mixed with Catholicism, the ancient people mixed with European blood..Irresistible to Lawrence and Iturbide. His Kate could be she.

Ted Forbes from The Art of Photography has an excellent series called The Artist Series on his youtube channel. He covers Graciela in one episode. Highly recommend checking it out. https://youtu.be/3oZxDrw61eI

I just spent a week in Mexico. It is a beautiful and wonderful country full of beautiful and wonderful people. These photographs capture a slice of that beauty and wonder.

The Getty released a graphic nonfiction book last year called "Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide". It's geared toward middle and high school readers, but the text and drawings mixed with her photos are beautiful. (A friend of mine from college was the editor on the book, so I am biased.)

We in the US are so fortunate to have such a rich and beautiful culture on our southern border. And, of all its true treasures, the Mexican people are the country's greatest. Despite what we hear from our mean-spirited, fear-mongering President, the Mexican people are open-hearted, generous, wise, hard-working, deeply spiritual, humble and kind. They are also proud -- and rightly so -- of their history as one of the most exquisite and enduring of the world's cultures. The "drug-crazed thugs" our President refers to were created by America's lust for narcotics and escapism. There were no narcos until we created a market for them. The Mexico I know and love is a sanctuary from the rampant materialism, commercialism and nihilism that is rapidly destroying our country and our world. Come to Mexico with your eyes, ears and heart open wide and you will return again and again. We don't need a Wall on our border; we need a giant sign that reads "Welcome" from both sides.

About seven years ago I saw her work at the Contemporary Art Museum in Mexico City and I have seen some of her work here in Denver. I would urge everyone to go and see her new exhibit as her work is mesmerizing, spellbinding and incredible.

What has always stunned me and thrilled me about her work is that, no matter how modest or humble the subject of the image may seem, the resulting picture is invariably and literally wonderful, as in full of wonder. This makes viewing the images an act of discovery. The mysteries inherent in her work—who are this people? Are those birds? What are they doing?—are not solved, they are displayed. The pictures retain the excitement of the first glimpse. Thank you for this start to a new day in the new year. This is hope made visible.

This work is incredible. I just spent 4 months in the central Mexican Highlands. The sensory experience of Mexico is incredibly varied and deep and never stops.

Evocative images. I hope that if the photographer displays her collection of images collected over 50 years, I’ll find out about it. She captures vultures, she captures people. Gorgeous

Lovely and evocative of Sally Mann's photography, both women wholly present.
