I quit using my smartphone in september 2018. I did what they cal a 'downgrade' on my phone and bought a dumb phone. This is a phone where you can only text and make an actual phone call. My experiences? Well were to begin haha...In short I just feel that i got my life back. A lack of distraction turns out te be one of the greatest gifts I could give myself. Sleep is better and I am more focused. Cortisol levels are tumbling down and I am more present. Big improvement on life quality. I got (and still get) a lot of questions about this choice. People are interested and sometimes comment 'O I wish I could do that too". Off course I miss some things like navigation and music apps. Will I go back to my smartphone? Maybe..it is of course 2019...but for now I am in a great place!

I believe that I can go a whole year without a smartphone. I have spent 15 years without a phone, so yes, I believe that it is possible for me to go one year without a smartphone. Yes, it may be hard being surrounded by people with a smartphone but I believe that everything is possible. I don't often use my phone a lot, my parent's don't like it when I'm on my phone so they usually make me go out and play with my siblings or make me join sports and clubs so that I can stay home and go out and learn something new.
This is very possible if you are a person that doesn't have a need to have a cell phone with features other than calling: social media, video playback, music players, and other apps that don't have communication as their main purpose. I, on the other hand, have gone weeks, but apps like Instagram and YouTube have addictive methods on influencing you to waste time, valuable time you can't get back.
I went a whole 12 years without a phone when I was younger i'm pretty sure I would be able to survive a year without my phone. I'm not addicted to my phone like other kids my age it's just an object that gives me some entertainment, in which i could find anywhere else. I have my close family here and friends, so it wouldn't be much of a difference, because i don't really text anyone on my phone.
First off, anything is possible. So yes, I think I could go a year without my phone but it would be incredibly difficult. No communication with friends and family for a year would be very difficult. I think that if you were to not have your phone for a year, it would make you realize how difficult it would be to go without it since you're so used to having on you all the time. You dont realize how much you "need" something until it's gone.
If I'm being honest, I do not think I could go without my phone for a year. If I don't think about it I probably could, but it would mean no communication with a lot of people. I usually make plans with my friends or with my family, if I did not have my phone I wouldn't be able to do that. Not using my phone for an entire year would mean I wouldn't be able to keep up with some of my favorite celebrities and their music. I can't drive by myself yet so I cannot randomly drive by someone's house and see if they are there or not. If I needed a ride home I would't be able to call my mom or anyone to ask. It would be very difficult to live without a phone, for me at least.
I belive i could go a year without my phone.Because i would rather be doing other things then being on my phone. I could be outside skatebording or talking with friends at the skatepark enjoying the nice weather. Or spending time with my family going to family activities. Hanging with my dog taking him for walks .

I’m not sure exactly how much time I spend on my phone but im sure the answer wouldn’t be pleasant. Phones have definitely become one of the largest distractions for people over the years. People spend way too much time on them but refuse to acknowledge that. In the article it talks about all the advantages to ditching the smartphone all together. Saving money, enjoying your youth, breaking records, etc. All sorts of things that go beyond the tiny word behind the screen. I don’t know if I could give up my phone for a year. I call people a lot and it’s the best way for me to communicate with my friends so we can hang out, tech free.
On the weekdays I spend about 2-3 hours on my phone. I use my phone to listen to music, watch youtube, check the weather, etc. On the weekends I spend about 6-8 hours on my phone doing the same thing. I think I could go a whole year without a phone. I want to because I think a smart phone is a big time waster and really has no purpose but entertain one's self. With a different kind of phone, that only serves for the purpose of calling and texting, you could use your time more effectively. Benefits of having my smartphone are being able to contact others and being able to access the internet for important assignments. Although I would like to give up my phone for a year , there is is really no other purpose it would serve than my own. Also, I have to take advantage of the fact that I do own a smart phone. Even if I were to live without it, I would spend my time watching TV and sleeping. The way I see it, a smart phone is a tool used to help you complete tasks throughout the day. It's an advanced tool that requires extra knowledge and work to use. Not having a phone might actually just make things more simple.
From decades ago to our generation now has changed dramatically. It is sad how much one person can be on their phone for hours and hours a day, but I am unfortunately one of those people. Greenberg wrote, "More than three-quarters of all Americans own a smartphone." So it's not only me. When I am on my phone I am usually one social media, playing games, or watching Netflix and this I feel has affected my daily life and making me less proactive. Greenberg also wrote, "1,460 hours on their smartphone and other mobile devices. That’s 91 waking days," which is stating that we as humans are becoming attached to our smartphones and not realizing what is around us.
Although there are many negative affects to the smart phone you can reach across some very helpful moments. For example, communication is key in many relationships and in order to get in touch with family in friends the smart phone makes it easy. Like the Messages, Phone, FaceTime, and Social Media cites.
For me I could not go a whole year without my phone, but instead of going a whole year I would try and limit my time on the smartphone, because I feel as if our whole society needs to limit the time we use on the phone. The phones are taking over our lives and we are missing out on some very important parts in our life and around us.
I go on my phone a couple hours every day. I use social media on my phone, play games, use discord, and watch YouTube and Netflix. I might not be able to go a year without my phone, but I would definitely be able to go at least 3 months without my phone. The benefits with having a phone is that you can text you parents if you need to tell them something or text you friends if you want to hang out with them. Some disadvantages is that you get distracted, you spend less time with family and don’t speak face to face that much. Some advantages to not having a smartphone is that you will probably be happier, you will spend more time with family and friends, and concentrate more on school. The disadvantage is that if you need to tell your parents something important and your not with them, you can’t text them and you would have to wait. The article didn’t persuade me because I often have to text my parents or far away family members and I wouldn’t be able to without a phone. The thing that persuaded me the most is when the article talked about us spending 91 waking days just on our phones. If I were to live without my phone for a year, I would read more, study more , exercise and practice karate more, etc.
I spend a lot of my time on my phone.
I was on my phone for two hours today.
there is a lot of other more important things I could be doing with my 1,460 hours and 1380 dollars but I choose to be on my phone.
Doing the things it all the things it said in the article like planting and circumnavigating the world sound really nice, but I am usually on my phone when I am in the middle of class or in the middle of something else and can't go do that thing to help the world.
But now that I have a phone, it changed a lot of my life.
I could could not go without my phone.
@Kyree Owens i have spent alot of time on my phone and i agree that there probably is something better to use the over a grand on a phone i could plant trees where companys are trying to build that new mall or help shelters with food for people who dont have the access to the things like a phone and they can go that long with no phone i can to
I could not go a year without my phone because that's how I contact my friends and I also get most of my entertainment from my phone
- spend 8hours a day on my phone i mostlty use ot for mjusic and games.
-i could go a year without a phone but i would be annoying be you can find things out fast with a phone
-a phone benifts ypu because you and use directions and find information
-the benifit of not hving one is you have more time to spend with your family and time for more activites
- the article does not persuade me to give jup my phone for a year.
I spend a lot of my time on my phone. I was on my phone for two hours today. I could probably go a year without a phone three years ago. But now that I have a phone, it changed a lot of my life. now I can talk to my parents when I needed something right then and there. Doing the things it all the things it said in the article like planting and circumnavigating the world sound really nice,but I am usually on my phone when I am in the middle of class or in the middle of something else and cant go do that thing to help the world. Now that phones have become a normal part of our lives, it has become an addiction that needs constant fueling and would be hard to over come but possible. there is a lot of other more important things I could be doing with my 1,460 hours and 1380 dollars but I choose to be on my phone.
I spend bout 2-3 hours on my phone. I don't think it negatively affects my life because it allows me to stay in touch with distant friends and family members. I believe I can go a year without my phone because unlike other people of my generation, my life doesn't revolve around my phone. The only disadvantage of having a smart phone is that the battery life doesn't last as long as I would like. No this article was not persuasive because I know my life wouldn't be tragically affected if I didn't have a smart phone. I could still have logical conversations with my friends, family members, and new people.
I spend about 2 hours on my phone everyday. I listen to music, watch videos, talk to and text people. I couldn't go a year without my smartphone because I also do important things on it all the time. My phone benefits me by helping me email and text people, talk to people all over the world, do homework, and entertain me. The only negative thing is that it leads me to procrastinate sometimes. The advantages of owning a smartphone are being able to help you with all the things listed above and even more stuff that you need in today's society. There is no advantage to not owning one. This article didn't persuade me because they completely overlooked what your phone does and not everyone wants to become a master pianist.
I spend about an hour and a half a day on my phone. I normally just play games in school when I am aloud to. I also occasionally check Facebook. I could probably go a year without my smartphone. I don't need to play games, I only play them when I am bored. The article didn't really persuade me because I don't use my phone a lot. I also already play 2 instruments. The money spent on phones really surprised me. I will admit it would be a pretty bad year if I didn't have my phone. If I didn't have my phone I would spend my time in school reading or doing homework for the next day. Overall my phone is not a huge part of my life but I do like having one.
I spend maybe 5-ish hours on my phone each day. I go on social media, such as instagram and youtube. I also use it to text people, although I don't text often. I could probably go a year without my phone since I could still do regular, everyday things without it. Although I would end up getting bored very fast, I could live without it for a year. Using my phone benefits me in gaining news from social media quicker and having the ability to contact people. But as we all know, smartphones are very addictive, and could keep you up later on a school night since you're so attached to it. The article does a great job at persuading, but I wouldn't be persuaded by it since adults are the ones who are telling me to do something usually. The most persuasive example is how cellphone usage is at its highest among young people. Without my phone, I would watch TV, play video games, and maybe hang out with my friends more.
I think I couldn’t last a year without my phone. I spend a lot of time on my phone and I use my phone to contact friends and family. I don’t like to be without my phone for 2 hours so I couldn’t go a year. I would also buy another phone and say it wasn’t mine so I could continue to use it.
I spend about 8 hours on my phone each day. The things I do on my phone is going on social media, and watching Youtube. I could not go a year without my phone because lots of people interact on social media. The benefits of it is having to call important people. The negative is being in with important people. The advantages are being more social outside. The disadvantages are being in the house more and damaging your eyes. No this article does not persuade me to get off my phone.
Honestly, I don't think that I could go a year without my phone. I've had a smartphone since I was in 7th grade, and even before that I had used an Ipod touch for social media and youtube. I use my phone basically all day, an hour doesn't go by (unless I'm sleeping) that I don't atleast check the lockscreen to see who's sent me something. All day I respond to text messages or am following up on my social media accounts. When I'm not on social media I still use my phone for entertainment purposes, watching a variety of different things on youtube or watching hulu. Although at first I would probably be bored out of my mind, I think by the end of a year without my smartphone I would probably be a happier and more productive person. Though it sounds like a sweet deal, I've had a phone for so long, and would constantly be surrounded by them anyways, so no matter how ideal, I don't think it would be attainable or realistic for me to live a year without a smartphone.
i spend about an hour on my phone every day
i think i can go a year without my phone i have a smart phone but i use it mostly when im bored but it can also distract me from getting things done.
no this article doesnt becausebecaue i use it in moderation
-I spend a lot of time on my phone, mostly all day.
- I believe I could go a year without my phone because even though I use my phone a lot I'm not that attached to it.
-My phone keeps me from being bored, and can help with problems!
-I have a smartphone, it's good because iPhones are easy to use. I don't really think there are disadvantages
-If I could go traveling the world for a year, without my phone. Then yes, that would probably be the only reason to give it up
I spend about 2-3 hours on my phone a day.
I believe I could go a year without it because lately I have stopped using my phone as much.
My phone makes it easy for me to have something to do when i'm bored, but also distracts me and leads to procrastination.
I do have a smartphone.
No this article does not because I like using it and I use it in moderation.
-i spend about 4-5 hours on my phone a day listening to music using snapchat instagram and texting.
-I dont think i could go a year without using my phone because it is something that i am so used to using every day and i just dont know what i would do without it.
-I think phones positively affect people because there are very usefull things on phones like the gps and calling and texting but it can also be bad because people are too dependent on their phones.
-The advantage of owning a smartphone is that you can stay connected.
-This article does not make me want to give up my phone because it would be way too hard
-abount an hour, listen too music and go on snapchat
-yes, i dont realy care if i dont have it
-it makes it easy too talk too poeple, we are so connected to it
-you would do more stuff if you didnt have one, you couldnt talk too poeple as easy
-no because im not on it much. how much poeple spend on it, going outside
On average I spend about 5 hours a day on my phone. I believe that I could go for the rest of my life without a phone very easily. You don't really need a phone people didn't have them back in the 60s and 70s and it seemed like those where some good times. Before now most people didn't even have cell phones and would just talk to each other in person or call on a landline and that seemed to work out just fine. The article that I have just read does not persuade me to give up my phone because they never stated any really good reasons as to why I would other than saying you spend lots of money paying bills for it.
I spend roughly three to four hours a day on my phone. I use my phone to go on social media, listen to music, and watch YouTube. I definitely could not go a year without my phone mainly because it has become a major part in my life and its the best way to get in touch with someone that isn't directly next to you. My phone benefits my life because I can use it to do research or communicate with people I don't always get to talk to. However, my phone also gives a negative impact on my life due to the fact that i'm always on it. I miss out on the little things in life and it takes away time that I could use to spend time with my family or on school work. The article did not persuade me into not using my phone for a year, but it had some really good points. One example of this is when the author wrote, "...if Americans applied all the money they allocate to smartphones to solving plastic pollution, 'There would be enough money available to pay for the necessary improvements in waste management in Asian countries for 70 years.'" Even if we didn't use all the money we spend on our phones, we could still improve the waste management for a while. If I were to spend a year without my phone, I would use my time to spend time with my family and friends, work harder at school, and do things that would benefit my life physically.
@Bobby
Cool fact choice, liked the writing, very cool Mr Sundo.
My phone is a very important part in my life and not having it for a year would change a lot of things. I spend usually 1-2 hours a day on my phone, but I mostly listen to music while i'm on it. I think i could go a year without my smartphone because the majority of what i do on a phone, can be done elsewhere. My phone benefits me by being able to tell me any question I have no matter what is is. it also helps me contact people fast and with ease. It also negatively affects my life by distracting me when i'm in school or when i'm doing something important. An advantage to owning a smartphone is easy access to messaging and calling and finding out info, while disadvantages are that its a distraction and it can be used for bad purposes.One fact i thought persuaded me is the amount of time people spend on their phone each year, all that time could be put to something maybe more productive and useful. Although the article made me think about giving up my phone, i probably wouldn't since it helps me more than it doesn't. My life would probably not change without a phone but it would take some getting used to.
@Ben Dlugos, I think you make a great point, however, I don't believe you used an example quote from the article.
I spend a lot of time on my phone. I use my phone for pretty much everything, social media, to text people, music and to take pictures. I dont think I would be able to go a year without my phone because if I didnt have my phone I wouldnt be able to text my friends out of school or if I needed to text my parents while im in school if something happens I wouldnt be able to. I would also probably not be friends with as many people. Im sure it would be nice to not have a phone for a little because you can get rid of some of the drama but i wouldnt be able to go to long. My phone benefits me because it helps me with school work and has an easier way of communicating with people when they live far. Phones can be bad and good in so many ways. They can help a lot and cause drama. Overall I dont think I could go a year without my phone.
Could I go a year without a phone? Yes, I think that I would be able to go a year without a phone. I’ve gone weeks and months without a phone which have gotten me acquainted with not having my phone and how to get around not be able to text. I would use a laptop or computer in order to email/text somebody. I could still do homework on the laptop and I could find out sports information that I need to know. I but the problem would be when I’m not by a laptop or computer. If that was the case and I needed to call someone I would use a friend’s phone. But if there wasn’t a friend or someone I know near me I would use a pay phone if there was one nearby. So with this and what I know to do, I believe that I could go a year without my phone.
I spend a decent amount of time on my phone everyday. I use it for things like music, social connections, and for apps to play for pleasure and for school. I don't think I could go a year without my phone. It isn't necessarily a vital part of my life, but it helps me connect with my friends, other people on social media, and keeps me updated on new news. M phone helps me talk to my friends and peers much quicker instead of having to write an email or letter. Also, I think my phone keeps me updated throughout the day on news that I can get by simply taking out my phone and getting a notification. I think I spend more time on my phone than I should which is a negative effect. In addition, I think phones take away time from other activities not only for me, but for everyone. The advantages of having a smart phone include being connected with friends, quick updates, easy access to social media, and apps with certain information. The disadvantages are possibly getting addicted or spending too much time on your phone. Furthermore, phones take away social interactions from young people as they start to grow up, and social interactions are a great life skill. The article doesn't persuade me to give up my phone for a year, because if I am not addicted, why should I give up something that is very helpful and convenient for me. If I did give up on my phone, I would probably spend a lot more time outdoors, participating in activities, and hanging out with my friends.
I spend a lot of time on my phone. I use it for social media, talking to friends and sometimes homework and music. I dont think I can last a year with out my phone because it is a part of my every day life. My phone is my main way of talking to friends so if I didnt have it i would miss out on a lot. My phone beifits me because it helps me with school and I am able to talk to my friends when ever I want. Some negatives to having my phone is that social media can be used to be hateful towards people and people use it in a negative way. I guess an advantage to not having a phone is that you can be more active and you arent always looking at a screen all day. A disadvantage to not having a phone is that you might miss out on things in your friends life if you dont always seem them. Having a phone allows you to talk to people with out them having to be right next to you. This article doesnt persuade me to give up my phone for a year. It doesnt persuade me because although it has its negatives, it has posatives. My phone allows me to listen to music and talk to my friends easily. If i were to spend time without my phone I would probably try and do things I like so I am occupied.
I spend a lot of time on my phone each day and use it for social media, music, and games. I definitely could not last a year without my phone because it is basically in my daily routine to pick it up and check my notifications. It can benefit by being able to connect with family and friends when they are not around but it can also be distracting when trying to get things done. If I didn't have a phone my social contact with others would improve. The most persuasive argument that the author uses is that the average American spends $14000 per decade on smartphones. That amazes me because that money could easily be spent on travel, clothes, food, ect. If I were to live without a phone for a year I would use the time to spend with my family and become more active in school/activies
I don't really spend that much time on my phone. I only use it to text about personal stuff but I can do that easily without a phone its just that sometimes it can't wait and i have access so i use it to tell people things that i can tell them later but want to tell them before. I could easily go a year without my phone because the world would be so much more real and easier if bad information didn't get around in one tap. Phones have benefits for talking in long distance relationships between family. But still you can right letters or email. The negative way it can affect someones life is colleges can see what you've said on your phone and the invention of a screenshot. It can make or break someones life depending how it is used. You will interact will people more often if you don't have and i phone and if you do then you can text people at any time and share the good things in your life. If you dont have an iphone then you cant talk to people at the times you might need to. If you do it could hurt you by someone screenshoting something you said and sending it to that person. No it doesn't persuade me. I will still easily beable to live without a phone for a year. I would spend my time doing hobbies i love with people i like.
- I spend about 5-6 hours a day on my phone. I use it to communicate, for social media, and to watch shows
- I don't think I could go a yer without using my phone. I could go a year if other people didn't use there phones as well, and the norm was communicating through each other or mail.
-A benefit that smartphones have on my life would be communication. I can also use it for information like google or safari. Another benefit would be it occupies my time when im bored. It negatively affects my life by not making me go out as much or not talking to people face to face.
-If i didn't own a smartphone I could be doing so much more with my life than sitting on a couch and watching netflix.
- Its kind of persuasive. The parts where it tells you what else you could be doing is very persuasive.
I spend a lot of time on my smartphone everyday. I use it to socialize with my friends. I also use it to listen to music, save all of my pictures, and for social media. I definitely wouldn't last without my phone for a year because I use my phone for a lot of reasons. There are many advantages to having a smartphone such as, it makes it easy to learn new things by searching on the internet. Other advantages are that they are useful in emergencies and they make communicating very easy. Although there are many advantages with having smartphones, there are also disadvantages. People can become very addicted to them and they can affect your health. Also they are a distraction because if you get a notification, people look right away and stop what they are doing. The article doesn't persuade me to give up my phone for a year because their are negatives with having them but their are also a lot of positives. If I had to live without a phone for a year I probably would drive over to my friends house to talk instead of texting.
I often spend a lot of time on my phone. I use it to go on social media, listen to music, and to talk to all my friends. I don't think I could go a year without my phone because there's so much that you need it for. Such as calling people, texting, communicating if there was something to go wrong and or if you were lost or in a difficult situation. There are many disadvantages and advantages to using and having a smartphone. This article did not persuade me as to giving up my phone. It didn't really change my mindset to give it up.
I spend many hours of my day on my phone. My most used apps are social media, music, and games.
I don’t think I would be able to go a year without my smartphone. Using my smartphone keeps me entertained and I don’t know what I’d do if I were bored. Although I use my phone mainly for entertainment, it is benificial for school, reminders, emails, and communication. Some negative affects smartphones have are the amount activities other than using my phone lack. I don’t go outdoors as much as I did without a phone. This article is very persuasive. I don’t think I could give up my phone for a year but it has persuaded me to take a couple days/weeks off without my phone and to see what it’s like. Showing the statistics of cell phone use and the amount of money spent has motivated me because the money could be spent somewhere more impactful like a charity. If I were to give up my phone I would go out on more walks, try new things, and spend more time with friends and family.
I spend a lot of time on my phone, I use it for social media, Spotify, or anything. I don't think I can last a year without my phone mainly because all my friends always use social media as a way of talking. So I would miss out on a lot of stuff from my friends. My phone benefits me because it helps me with school work and has an easier way of communicating with people when they live far. It does have its negative side because social media is great for showing people artwork or anything, but people do use it as a way to spread hate and rude comments. If I didn't have a phone I think I'd feel freer because I am addicted to my phone and not having it would make me do a lot more than I do now. The negative thing about that is that since everyone has a phone and only talk on social media, I would feel left out. No, the article didn't persuade me to give up my phone because even though phones can be addictive and have negative parts about it, it does have its positive side. It is a new generation of technology so more kids will get a phone from a very young age. If I had to live a year without my phone I would probably just live the same way I do now, just without a phone.
I often spend an hour or so on my phone each day. I use it to check social media, socialize with a few of my close friends, keep in touch with good friends of mine who live out of state, and get help to better understand my school work. I could definitely go a decent mount of time without using my phone, however, I don't believe I would last one year without missing it. Although I could still see man of my friends at school, I would lose contact with my good friends who I don't have the ability to see everyday, as well as family. Although there are many advantages to having a smartphone handy, it brings a great deal of stress into our lives. I personally stress over returning calls and messages, feeling left out when seeing my friends having fun without me, and the amount of hate spread on the internet is extremely discomforting. Seeing the disadvantages of excessive smartphone usage does open my eyes to the advantages of beginning to distance myself from social media. Pointing out the amount of money spent on cellphone usage each year is very persuasive. If I were to go a year without my phone I would likely engage in more hobbies as well as begin traveling far more.
On average I spend about 4-5 hours on my phone each day. I mostly look at weather, current events, and YouTube. While I may not be able to go without my phone for a year, a month or two could be possible. I think this because while it is addicting to use my phone, I need a break from all the stimulation of using it. On one hand, having a phone has benefits. You can keep up with the world's news, entertain yourself with games and videos, or use an endless library of other apps. There are negative effects to using a phone as well. It is a constant distraction, with advertisements plaguing the screen and hyper-addictive apps such as social media. While this article does not persuade me to go a whole year without my phone, it does give me ideas about how I could change my habits on my phone and use it less.
I spend lots on my smartphone, i use my phone for a range of things to entertainment, to quick internet searches, to applying for jobs ,and checking homework. to give up my smart phone i don't think would be all that difficult IF i had good way to communicate with my family and friends. there are many advantages and disadvantages to using this device. It is a convenience tool. so that all you information is in one place at easy access, however the distractions that come with this are also very big. This article hasn't persuade me to give up my phone it honestly hasn't given enough points and arguments to get me to even consider giving it up
-According to my screen time, I've 10 hours an 58 minutes on my phone in the past 7 days. When I am on my phone, I listen to music, read, text, and use social media.
-I honestly think I can go a year without a phone. I don't really use my phone for things that I can't accomplish in a non-technological way.
-My phone benefits me by waking me up in the morning mostly. But it has negative affects when i'm overusing it, like when I should be more focused on sleeping, or homework, etc..
-The advantages to not owning a smartphone I believe would be the ability to use my time more productively. Like I wouldn't be so caught up with the explore page on instagram, but current events and whats taking place in my environment. Going places, and hanging out with friends more, rather than facetime, etc. Disadvantages could be not knowing what's taking place also (current events), because everything is on the internet.
-I mean sorta, I guess, but it doesn't really have a lot of strong points that make me want to go "yeah, this is totally worth it" because in ways I rely on my phone. As I look into my future, the author persuaded me most with how costly it can be. If I were to live without a phone for a year, I'd probably sleep more, go outside from time to time, and yeah I don't know.
I spend the majority of my day on my phone. The only time I go an extended period without it is usually because I am at school and I am either not allowed to have it due to the rules of the teacher, or I choose not to be on my device in order to focus and fully understand what is being conveyed to me. The main things I do on my phone are snapchat, whether it be with my friends or boyfriend, call or text family, or view other forms of social media.
On the rare occasion that I must go even days without my phone, I am eager to get it back. There is no possible way I could go weeks or a year without it. I would feel incomplete. My device has become a part of my livelihood because I have let it. It is honestly an addiction.
When I have my phone, I feel safe because if something were to go wrong, I would have a way of contacting the people I am close to. Of course there are times when there is no need to have one, but I cannot part with it. My addiction, along with the majority of the world, has become a barrier in my life. I know I should try to put it down at times like when I am at the dinner table with my family and need to focus on them and spend quality time. However, I cannot make myself put it away.
I do not think anyone could persuade me to give up my smartphone only because I have gotten used to having it with me and have become so attached. Even if there are financial or personal benefits, I am willing to sacrifice them, which I am aware is a significant problem.
I spend a few hours on my phone a day. I stay off of social media as much as possible the only thing I really do is talk my best friend or watch videos. I could go a year without my phone because I've done it before. I spent my childhood and being a tween without a phone. I enjoyed the worry free nature and living in the real world. I had a time where I couldn't get enough of my phone, i’d be on it all the time but now i do the opposite. I detox once in awhile where I delete apps, pictures, contacts and accounts I don't need; it reduces my screen time. There are many benefits to having a smartphone like using the map, communication or photography but for the most part it’s unnecessary. We are just addicted to having this luxury, being able to access things whenever-it's less work. There are so many advantages to not owning a smartphone, for example, you can explore the world around you and actually expand your knowledge and awareness. Being caught up in a screen and looking down sucks you into a black hole where true beauty doesn't exist. You can't experience the things you are passing by and it takes away from the human-human interactions of the daily life. I'd love to give up my phone for a year but realistically it’d have to be in the future. I'm constantly shorting the time spent on my phone and trying to be more aware of the world and my surroundings. I've become much more happy, at peace, and confident. I've grown spiritually and my consciousness has widened.
I spend two hours on my phone each day. I think I can live a year without smartphone. I already lived without phone during a lot of year so why don't start again ? Of course it will be difficult now that I have one.
The benefits of having your phone is that when there is an emergency you can contact your family or friends. Also it can help with classwork. Having you being on your phone sometimes makes you forget your obligations, such as chores or getting homework.
Negative affects is being on your phone sometimes makes you forget your obligations, such as chores or getting homework done.
I can spend a year without a smart phone, I just got one recently and I don´t use it much.
I spend a lot of my time on my smartphone each day.. It is very hard for everybody to not use their phones now because it takes an important place in our life.
Before, a phone was used to call somebody and now, we can do everything with it. I think we must regulate our utlization but not to stop using for year, anybody will succed. All is connected now but sometime we must do others things, go out or spend more time with our familly.
I think I could go for fews weeks without my smatphone. For me, the solution is maybe to use old phones and we will have more time for us.
@X, Most definitely, we really do use our phones for everything and it would be nearly impossible for us to live without it. but I personally feel like getting off your phone for a little bit every now and then could be super beneficial. you wouldn't have to worry about whats going on, you don't have to be constantly checking for updates, or texts. I believe that even just doing that can give you good time to yourself for you to relax and just be to yourself for a little; which could definitely lower stress or anxiety. I know it could be hard for some people to do this because it seems like everywhere you look people are always on their phones, seemingly never going out and enjoying life. But coming back to it phones are almost a necessity in everybody's everyday life, so it might just be near impossible for some people to stay off it for a year.
I spend about 2 or 3 hours on my phone troughout a day.
That time consists of going on socials networks like Instragram or Snapchatv or of seeing videos on Youtube.
I couldn't go without my smartphone for a year because I use my smartphone everyday and it's a part of my life, without him I will be lost.
I use my smartphone to be inform of the news in the world and it can be very usefull if they are an emergency but it can be also negative because it's dangerous for your eyes and your brain and it isolate yourself of your family or your friends.
If I don't have my smartphone for a year I think I will spend the most of my time with my friends and my family.
I use my phone a lot during the day and I think it would be hard for me to not use it. I can speak with my family and my friends, go to internet so it's impossible for me to go a year without my smartphone.
I spend about 4 hours on my phone throughout the day. That time is spent speaking to friends and watching funny videos. I also use it as a reminder, as my alarm, to learn about things i dont know about.
The phone helps me follow the actualities and the news, it can also be very usefull in case of an emergency.
But it has disadvantages: it's not good for your brain, and it also isolate you in your bubble.
Not having a phone could make you hangout more with friends. But it would be harder to contact them.
My phone is indespensible so it would be impossible to spend one year without it
I spend about 6 hours on my phone throughout the day. That time consists of contacting my friends or family.
I use my phone several times a day to set reminders and timers and alarms and etc.
I use it too for social networks, to be informed on the world, to listen to music during long train, car, plane rides.
I couldn't go without my phone for a year because it has way more uses to it beside the obvious.
My phone means to me part of my life.
I think nobody can do without their phone for a year, but it's a good idea to give it a try . We can learn about ourselves.
" Could you go a year without a smartphone ? "
For some people the phone is essential. It's useful to spend time in transport, communicate with friends and family ... The phone is the most used object. We live in a society where it will be hard to do without the mobile phone, it has even become the working tool of some people. However, the phone is not good, however, it holds some people on itself, decreases communication, and can make you hooked.
I think that living a year without a phone these days will be complicated, although at the time people lived very well without, but mentalities and generations have evolved.
But, if some people can leave a year without a smartphone, this can be benefits for us, the life is real, it's not virtual,
we must take advantage of it.
I think not using your phone for a year could bring several benefits to your mental and social health, but can bring some negative effects too. I think that always having your phone on you isn't a necessity because it's always good to enjoy the life your living instead of always checking your phone for updates on the latest drama, irrelevant news, etc… plus, there are actually many people who say smartphone addiction can be linked to sleeping disorders, anxiety, stress disorders. But sometimes having your phone is a necessity, like if you are trying to find out what your friends are up too, if your parents need you, or know about a emergency quicker. Another positive can be if you're at a new place and you don't really know where you're going you'll always have a quick gps you can go to. All around, you never really see somebody without a phone anymore, they are all around.
I barely spend any time on my phone but most of it is for music
I use my phone about 7 hours of the day. The benefits of my phone are being able to reach people an listen to music easily.
I spend most of my day on my phone when im bored and i watch tv shows on my phone or use my social media to text my friends
i think smartphones are meant to be a tool but end up taking too much of our time.
I spend about 5 hours in total every day on my phone. I text people and call people but I mainly watch youtube on my phone.
i feel that having a smart phone can take over you and make very not focus but some times they can come in handy with family and in case of an emerngerncy .
The benefits of having your phone is that when theirs an emergency you can contact your family or friends. Also it can help with classwork or receive updates much faster. Having your cell phone on you allows to contact important people. The downfalls of having your cellphone is that it can cause many accidents with driving and it can be a distraction. You can socialize with people more without your cellphone and get closer with the people around you. Not having your cellphone would make you find ways to make it around the world and it would be different.
Although it would certainly be difficult to go a full year, I believe it would be beneficial for everyone to try to cut down on their cell phone usage. Greenberg discusses a variety of possible activities you could pursue with this extra time, each of which being far more productive than being on your phone.
One of Greenberg's statistics that blew my mind was the environmental influence people could have. Although the land purchase/tree planting he mentioned is very unpractical, it goes to show that we could still make a difference with something small if we all agree to take part in it.
Another activity I agree people should pursue is reading. Greenberg discusses the many opportunities people bypass in the world of literature. I believe that everyone could benefit from setting down their technology and picking up a book. It makes you smarter and relieves stress, which we all need far more than screen time.

I feel as though it would be very hard for me and any other person to go without a phone for a year just because of the time period we are in with all the technology that we have nowadays and that we grew up in the system. A lot of people are addicted to phones especially younger kids and it’s only gonna get worse. People are gonna wanna keep in track with a lot of stuff like politics and events around the world. I know I can’t go a week without my phone I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be very hard to go a year without a phone.
I spend about 1-2 hours on my phone throughout the day, that time consists of contacting my friends or family, setting alarms or catching up on some memes. I probably couldn't go a full year without my phone due to the need to be able to contact my parents or search something up on the internet. However, I could probably go without it for a few weeks, maybe a month. My phone makes it easier to remember things like storing events in my calendar or saving passwords to my notes. It can negatively impact my life because I feel like I have to always have it and sometimes I may not notice things due to my eyes being glued to its tiny vibrant screen. If you didn't have one I would say the advantages of getting one would be to contact people in emergency and to save documents/ photographs. It can take up a lot of your time and it is very distracting. However, seeing how many days and how much money we spend on our cell phones makes me want to take a technology break and give up my phone for a couple of days.
I could go a year without my phone, not only do I believe that our generation has been corrupted and being taken over by social media and technology but I believe that social media can be a dangerous place but can even get you in trouble. The power of phones is very unmatched, if you use them correctly they can be very useful and powerful but if you use them incorrectly it can backlash and have a negative impact on you and even your future. Everything you put on the internet will be there forever there is no way to remove it, every snap chat you send, every post on Instagram every source of social media will hold your information forever. The only thing I wouldn’t be able to give up about my phone is my alarm, timers, and reminders I use these to keep my day in order and in check.
I couldn't go without my phone for a year because it has way more uses to it besides the obvious. I use my phone several times a day to set reminders and timers and alarms and etc. I can honestly say that I can go majority of the day off of my phone but simply choose not to. I constantly take long breaks from social media, but still use and need my phone for other things. The only part I really don't like is how much looking at tiny letters on a screen strains your eyes. I already have horrible vision and I'm sure my phone and other electronics have progressively made it worse. If somebody could create a more effective way to immediately reach my family that lives an hour away, or ways for me to remember when I have a doctor's appointment, I'll throw my phone away but until then, I'll keep it
Based on my current habits, I do not think that I will be able to go a year without my phone. In this day and age, we are all so addicted to our phones and feel like we cannot get anywhere without it. I do wish that I would be able to go a year without my phone because I do not really like the fact that I am so reliant on it and that spend so much of my time on it, to the point where I end up wasting my time and I could be doing more important/productive things. I think that social media and all the things that come with having a smartphone are changing society in a kinda negative way and making us feel like we all need to look a certain way in order to feel accepted. I think that I will try to spend more time off my phone because it does have an effect on my life and I do not want to be so reliant on it 24/7.
While I do know that I would survive without it for a year, I don't think I'd be willing to give it up for that long. A day, a week and even a month or two I'm fine with but a year requires a higher level of inner strength and willpower I do not have yet. My phone offer me a variety of advantages such as being able to access tons of information in mere seconds. As well as having connections with thousands of people through apps and contacts alike. Not to mention the amount of entertainment it offers. However, all of these things make such a device dangerous and addictive. I find myself completely oblivious of my surroundings when I'm on my phone. It is almost like another digital realm entirely that anyone can access. These are the negative effects of smartphones. They're able to pull people like me and millions of other young adults, kids and teens in and never let go. Time often flies when I'm on my phone and those crucial minutes and hours skim past me before I even realize it. In addition to all of this there's constant pressure from social media, nonstop notifications, messages, games, videos and the freedom to say what you want when you want. I truly believe that all of this can be a disadvantage just as much as some of these things can be an advantage. Overall, it is an internal battle we all must fight if we want to overcome the grip our phones have on most of us.
I don't think that I could go a year without my phone. In today's society, it's almost impossible to go to the bathroom, go to a different room, let alone leave the house without your home. So imagining a year without a phone at all, and following through with it, would be very hard. In order to communicate and interact in today's world, a phone is vital. Everything is so instant, therefore an instant connection is essential. On a daily basis, I would say I'm on my phone for around 5 hours. This means that about 1/3 of the time I am awake every day is spent on my device. Without a smartphone, I would be very limited in terms of social media, communication, games, streaming, watching, and even reading what is going on in the world. Even though many people would say that it's good to go without technology and live in the real world, a whole year without a phone would hurt a person due to the lack of awareness, ability, or connection they would the rest of world.
I spend approximately 5 hours on my phone per day, and while I'm not proud of how often I am no my phone, I do appreciate that I can use it for schoolwork, business emails, communication, as well as talking with friends. With how busy my daily life is I don't think that given the circumstances I would be able to go a year without it. If I had no responsibilities to worry about then I would say yes, of course and I would actually enjoy giving up my technology for a year and seeing how my life changes, but with how fast the world communicates nowadays, it just isn't an option
My phone greatly benefits me as I have two cows to feed on a daily basis and their feeding revolves around the texts and emails that I have to send daily. I have friends that live in different countries and my phone is one of the only ways I can keep up with whats happening in their world. I think it is negatively affecting my life because I never sleep due to the constant notifications and when I wake up the first thing I do is check my phone. It can be detrimental to your health to always see the social media on a daily basis and compare your life to what you see through your smartphone screen. I know it was negative for me and it didn't help my mindset or my life. I think like without smartphones would be good, but i think society has evolved too far to be without them.
I probably could not go a year without my phone. I think I would be able to give up social media, but I would still want to use my phone for texts and calls to keep in contact with my family and friends. I use my phone a lot everyday and mostly for social media. I think at this point, social media has just become such a habit for me to check constantly, but I do not really need it. As previously mentioned, I don't think I'd be able to go without my phone for texting and calling (as well as taking photos!!), but I think I'd for sure be able to take out other aspects of my phone because it wastes so much of my time when I could be doing something else way more valuable!
I believe that I would not be able to go a year without my smartphone. The reason is because my smartphone is my way of staying connected to everything such as my friends, family, work, and current events around the world. While it would probably be healthy for me to give up my smartphone, and I would most likely benefit from the decreased stresses of everything happening around me, I just really do not think I could go a year without it.
I would not be able to go a year without my phone. I spend about 5 hours on my phone each day. I mostly use social media, but I also play games and watch Netflix. I wouldn't be able to go a year without my smartphone because I use it for so many things. I email people for work, text family and friends, and having a smartphone makes everything so much easier. I set reminders so I make sure to get certain things done, listen to music to help me stay focused on homework and relax, etc. I think the negatives are that I get to attached to social media and always feel like I have to update my social media because everyone else does. Also, it takes up a large part of my day when I could be spending time with friends or family. The article does persuade me to give up my phone. If I were to live without a smartphone for a year, I would spend my time working more and making money, spending time hanging out with friends, exercising more, and overall doing more things that I enjoy.
I could go a year without a smartphone with some help because I only really use it to watch youtube or do homework. The advantages of using a phone are that I can call my family members, do any school work on it and I can entertain myself. But I do spend 3 hours a day using it and that's really unhealthy. Even then I could watch youtube on the tv or use a computer for homework. Sure I’m doing the same thing but the screen is farther away from my eyes and so my vision is less likely to worsen when looking at a screen that is farther away. But I would need the help of my mom to set me straight as she always does. But with much effort and dedication, I can actually accomplish the goal. One year prior I gave up on drinking soda and I’m still going strong so this goal is technically possible.
I would be able to go a year without a smartphone because social media and the infinite assets on my phone are not something that dominate my life. Although I have created unconscious habits according to the time of day that I typically check social media or utilize my phone, I am confident that I could break these habits. Just as one can change their schedule, for example changing the time of day one eats, I could change my urge to check my phone. The "hunger" to use my phone would over time disappear because I would train myself out of the habit. In my life, phone usage is worked into my schedule, so if I change my schedule, I could go a year without my smartphone.
No, I would not be able to go a year without my phone, even though my phone is dry asf I still use my phone to keep in contact with my parents. I can say that I am addicted to my phone because I am on it most of my day, because I get bored then I get on my phone and scroll through facebook and other social media apps. Even though I think it would be a great idea of getting off my phone because it can stop a lot of negative energy I know deep down that I would not be able to stay off my phone for a year.
i think i could not last a year without my phone . My phone connects with the world. Its an essential tool in my life and i need for day to day basis . I need for even for the smallest reasons . My phone bring me joy . The only negative reaosn is social media it brainn washes us and makes us wanna live up to them . Without my phone i think i would be missing out on everything and i wont be caught up with the latest update and going on the world . although i can stay off my phone and interact with other and enjoy myself and have a good time
i use my phone a lot during the day and i think it would be hard for me to not use it.
I spend usually around two hours on my phone every day. I usually talk to my friends, Snapchat, and watch Netflix on my phone everyday. I don't think that I could go without a smartphone just becuase I have gottern so used to it and have used it my whole life that now I have just grown acustomed to it. It would be a very big life change. My phone allows me to be able to contact my friends and family very easliy. If I need a ride I can call my mom and she can come get me. It negatively affects me by taking over my life at some points in my day. Smartphones allow me to be able find things on maps and be able to contact my friends. Some disadvantages is that it takes away from face to face communication. This article does not persuade me to give up my phone for a year. However, the comment that athletes can circumnavigate the globe in the time I spend on my phone inspires me. I would spend my time golfing or spending actual face to face time with my favorite people.
Usually I spend about an hour of time on my phone each day. This encompasses listening to music, communicating usually through text, and mostly entertainment from youtube which I really enjoy. I think I could go a year without my smartphone. I enjoy challenges and have in past years gone a year without chocolate, soda, and candy which have all strengthened my self control. Sacrificing my phone is a bit different however, because ya I use it for entertainment but I also need it for emergencies, my future, emailing, working out my job hours. These would all be hindered if I had to use a less reliable and efficient burner or flip phone. I think these benefit me to succeed and be safe. My phone hinders my life by being a constant distraction that never brings me real joy. When I scroll through social media, I never leave feeling really good about myself. I think I could limit my uses of media even more, but luckily I’ve been able to already control how much time I use my phone. The fact that an athlete was able to circumnavigate the globe in the time I take playing on a little box in my pocket is the best pursuasser for this challenge. I think I would be able to complete this challenge as long as my family, and friends knew about it, and the absence would not hinder my future aspirations.
i usemy phone 24/7 ita more than u virginty
I think that It would be increadibly hard to go a year without my phone. mostly because it is an esential tool of my life it is how I communicate with my parents with friends and far away extended family it is how I take pictures of the good times. Social Media is less of a problem and is somthing I could give up.It is also a distraction that I struggle with somtimes and a waste of my time that could be better spent.
@Ashton Warren
I don't have a phone i am senior in high school. i think it is very hard i would love to have a phone but I have realized that I am lazy and have no work ethic when I have my phone. For me the best happy medium for us young Adults is to set a certain amount of screen time and use that time for certain needs like pictures and communication.
I honestly could not go a year without my smartphone, even though I wish I could. I hate my phone and what it does to my work ethic. It causes way too many distractions, causing me to either not do my work or forget about it. I try to write down what homework I have on my phone, ironically.
A main reason I could not go without my phone is because of communication. My parents like to use an app called Life360 that tracks where I am, so I need my phone with me at all times.
I would be fine without social media, it would be good for all of us, but it is one of the only ways I keep track of my friends that go to different schools, make new friends, and make plans.
Homework is also why I could not go without my phone for a year. Sometimes I don't always have my laptop with me, and so I do my work on my phone. I watch the videos we have to watch for math on my phone rather than on my laptop because I find that I pay attention better since my phone isn't sitting off to the side.
I believe no one in todays time could go without their phone for a year because now, smartphones are apart of everyone's lives, jobs, schools, and parents all have apps for everything.
The advantages to not owning are many. one advantage is I do not have to keep looking at it and be worried about what people are saying. I have a lot of free time to go outside and work with my animals. phones are helpful though because then I can communicate with people or when I need to be picked up from practice. I think I can go without a phone for a year but I would need to use someone else to call. when I am spending to much time on technology I forget about things like homework. I probably spend about three hours on technology a week. I think technology could be good or bad.
@zach23 i agree but i spend too much time on my phone i wish i dint have it sometime to keep from distracting me but i jest need to learn how to eave it in my pocket.
Depending on what day it is I usually spend 5 hours plus on my phone. I mainly use my phone to go on Social Media and the benefits from that is that I can talk to more people out of school. However though I don't think I could go a year without my phone not even a whole week to be honest because of how used I am to be being on it a day. What's negative about being on my phone every day is that I'm on it a lot and that's not good , unless I'm busy like at a soccer game or practice, or school. But at the end of the day In my opinion , having your phone on you is always necessary.
On a daily basis i will spend about 10 to 12 hours on my phone. I will usually use youtube a lot because there are some interesting things to watch. I also spend some of it playing games like Clash Royale and Brawl Stars. The other parts are mostly spent on Instagram and snapchat. I use my phone a lot but i am also out of the house at the skatepark a lot so i don't only use my phone. I ride scooters and skateboards in my spare time.
I spend about 4 hours a day on my phone. Things I do on my phone are go on social media and talk with people. I think I cant go a year with out my phone. Because I would have no way of talking to people that I cant see everyday or if I need to ask google for something. If you dint have a cell phone I think the disadvantages are you cant get hold of people has easy. That is the biggest disadvantages in my opinion.
I only spend around 30 minutes on my phone on a daily basis so most of the things said in the article don't really matter as much to me. The only really negative impacts i see in phones is that maybe they aren't good for your eye sight to be looking at the screen all day. The positive thing about phones is if you have one you can text or call people if say you had plans with someone but you had to cancel last minute you could tell them, but if you didn't have a phone then you wouldn't have a way to tell them you wont be showing up. I could go a year without my phone because i don't really use it for anything but texting and if i needed i could just talk to people in person. If i didn't have a phone i guess the positive side would be that i wouldn't be tempted to look at a screen constantly.
The benefits my phone has for my life is that I can stay connected with a lot of my peers around Oregon or my friends at my school. My phone keeps me entertained and helps me contact anyone at any time if its crucial or really important, it also keeps me in reach with my parents so that they know where I am at all times. But, the negative affects my phone has in my life is that it draws my attention so that whenever I have homework or something really important to do I don't do it because I'm so focused on my phone. I make excuses that I don't have time, but usually I roughly have 2 hours of free time to get all my homework done but instead I just go on my phone. Also, I do many sports and I always use the excuse that school is to hard or that sports are making it difficult but it really is just me choosing that my phone is more important than my education. So, yes I do think that I could go a year without my cellphone and that it would benefit me to get all the things I need to get done so that I can be successful as I get higher and higher at school.
The benefits with a smartphone is you can meet more people. You also have emergency services, and basically a computer in your hand at all times so you can look up things on the internet and find an answer to questions. The negative affect of a smartphone, is that your spending money on it instead of spending on the money elsewhere where the money is needed. The other negative affect is when your looking at the screen of your smartphone you are most likely not doing productive things that could benefit yourself or others.
@CarlosR23 I agree because most people struggle with school or other things and all they are doing is going on their phone so having that freedom of not having a phone at all times could and would benefit other.
Personally I believe I spend way too much time on my phone like about 4-5 hours at least. But when im on my phone I will listen to music for at least an hour a day but what I always do on my phone is face time for at least 2-3 hours and that's why I spend so much time on my phone. Honestly I do not think I could go a year without my smartphone because there are so many things that are useful when having a phone. Such as communication is a very easy thing to do over a smartphone, and also if you need a map to go somewhere your phone can help you and of course google will tell you anything you need to know. If my smartphone was less useful then I could go a year without it but at points in time I do need my phone to contact my parents while at a friends or if they are grocery shopping and I need something I can just text them. A down side to having a phone is you will sit down at 12 to look at your phone and next thing you know it's 4, smartphones can be very addicting especially when you are bored.
@Macy23 I agree phones are addictive and it's very challenging because when your bored all you want to do is just go on your phone and waste time.
I only go on my phone about 1.5 hours a day. I only go on my phone when i am not busy with sports. If you didn't have a phone if you had to call or text somebody you couldn't. I don't go on my phone that much so it would be easy for me to go a year without it, but i would like to do something when i am not busy. The article doesn't want me to give up my phone but it could if i had too. I have a phone so i call call my parents, family.
@jackson i also manly just call and text my family
i usually spend about 5-6 hours on my phone editing videos or just watching netflix or texting my friends. the benefits of having a phone is you could talk to people your not close to or don't have a chance to hang out in person. i don't think i could go a year without my phone because i have a lot of close friends who i'm not able to see in person and i wouldn't be able to talk to them anymore.
The benefits that my phone has on my life is that I can easily get in touch with my friends and I can keep up with whats going on with the world and other peoples life's. Yes I think my phone does have a negative impact on my life. I am a very stressful person and I have heard that your stress levels go up when you use your smartphone. Also no amount of light hitting your eyeballs 1 foot away is good for eyes or your brain. I also tend to get really bad headaches from looking at my phone took much and that's a major problem. Lastly I love my phone and the connection I can get with my friends over it, but I do think I need to spend less time on my phone and enjoy another persons company.
I spend about 2 hours on my phone, Which sucks. Sure, I could use it to do productive things... but I really just message my friends and host WiFi hotspots. I could go a year without my smartphone if I really needed to... like if my life depended on it. It really is horrible to not be able to call your parents and let them know where you are. That's how some kids go missing. The benefits it has on my life is being able to text friends and family. That's really it. This article made me aware of the crisis going on in the world right now. I think I might just slim my use by thirty minutes...
i spend about 3 to 4 hours on my phone every day. what i do on my phone is watch youtube
I spend usually around 3 hours a day on my Xbox. Yes because I don't really care for phones. My phone helps me communicate with my friends and family. Can call someone if you are lost in the wild. It's a little time consuming if you have social media. This article didn't change my mind much.
i spend about an hour on my phone each day and it is very distracting and i often find my self having to do something but my eyes stray towards my phone i think that smart phones are to addictive and i would prefer to not have one.
@josef phones are really distracting.
I spend about 8 hours on my phone. That's my estimate at least. I feel like phones have a lot of benefits and I feel like they're pretty useful most of the time. They help you communicate long distance, they have a compass in case you get lost, they have 911 speed dial so that if you're in danger you can call the police. They also have calculators and google so you can search things up when needed. I know being on your phone too much is an issue but if you're using it in a useful way it can't be all that bad. Your phone can be for educational and fun uses. So the way I see it is that, if you don't use your phone too much and you're using it for a useful purpose, its okay to have one.
I spend about 3 to 6 hours on my phone a day, depends on the day. some days I might work and ill spend about 3 hours between the day so one hour in the morning and two at night. I could spend a whole year without my phone or any electronic device. I could go help on the ranch more or play with the dog more. I could probably lose some weight by working out and witch could benefit my health. It is easy for me to not have a phone and iv'e done it before.
on a average day I spend about 2 to 3 hours on my phone. On my phone I call my mom go on Instagram and watch YouTube. I could go a year with out a smart phone because all I do is call my om and do dumb things on it. the benefits my phone has in my life are calling someone that I know so that they can pick me up from school or I can text them. the negative thing of my phone is that i'm on it a lot and its not good for me. I would actually prefer not having a phone.
@Jaden30 i think that phones are to addictive and should only be used for calling to get a ride or things like that.
@Jaden30
I agree with you. I really only use my phone to let my parents know where I am.... It's really not healthy to be playing games ON SCREEN rather than OUTSIDE
If i had a choice to go without my phone for a year i don't think i can do it.I say this because everyday life has electronics and when i see something interesting i want to learn more about it.Take Fortnite for instance, everybody loves Fortnite and want to find ways to get better and better.But say without it, it would be tempting to play or learn about it. If i were to try and do 1 whole year i think i would or could last a week or two.It would also be harder to talk to friends or if you were in trouble you would'nt be able to call someone.
If i went a year without my phone for a year i could probably do it. why ? its because I really don't use my phone on school days. I could also find other entertainment with my friends. In paragraph play it said "Smartphone usage is highest among teenagers and people in their early 20s" we were mostly born into this so for some people it's hard to stop doing stuff that you know and change your pattern.
@Emilee good argument
On my phone I probably spend up the 8 hours on my phone a day or, even more. The things I do one my phone in that time is mostly you tube and social media. If I was challenged to stay off my phone for a year I would accept because of the challenge but, wouldn't be able to go through with it. The benefits of having a phone is that you can easily learn some things easier on a phone.The negative is not being able to go outside and actually do it. I really need to start getting more time off my phone to go out and do hands on activities.
@Mateo I agree because I have spent a tops of 10 hours in one day just looking at my screen. And I usually go on social media when I'm on my phone.
thats a lot of hours
each day i spend around 6 hours on my phone. the majority of the things i do on my phone are stuff like social media music and games. i think i could go a year with out my phone because i feel like it takes up most of my time when i could be doing other things like helping around the house or being with my family. plus i would feel like a would have a little more freedom when i go places because i wouldn't constantly have someone knowing where i am most of the time. the benefits of having my phone is knowing whats happening around the world and having communication with my peers. a advantage of having smart phone is being able to call. i think i would spend most of my time without a smartphone doing stuff like making better people skills.
@noa you go on your phone way to much a day.
If I was to go a year without my phone, then I would probably fail the challenge.This is because I use my phone a lot, without my phone I would go insane and bother my mom, to give me my phone back, and I wouldn't want to do anything.But I would also be able to do other things even though I would get bored and want to use my phone again.Some benefits of my phone are that I can make call and text someone, if there is an emergency then I can call someone, I can also use google to help search something that I don't understand.A disadvantage is that when I use my phone I get lazy and don't want to do anything else.Another disadvantage is that someone can get into your account mess with your things.
Could I go a year without a smartphone? Yes I think so because all I use on it is for calling, texting, and YouTube. I could just get a flip phone to call and text and I could use the computer for YouTube. It wouldn't really matter if I didn't had one because I could go on My PlayStation and play games on there. So I could go for a year without my phone. But phones aren't terrible to use because a lot of people will need them for jobs or to buy stuff online or help out with a lot more stuff.
In my opinion think that it is fairly easy to go without a phone for a year but at the same time it could be really hard. The reasons i think it would be hard is because you would need way to contact people if you ever wanted to go somewhere with friends or something. My point is that i would only be hard to not use it in case of emergency. Other than that it would be so easy.
I spend about 2 hours on my phone a day. The main things I do on my phone is watch YouTube and that's it.
Yes cause i was able to when i was a kid.
You can call your friends and family. You get into a lot of drama on the phone.
Keeping contact with family. Getting rumors about you.
No it doesn't persuade me to.
very cool
There are many benefits and negativity of having a phone. Some benefits include calling of texting my family and friends. I always call my parents when I need to be picked up, of if anything happened that I need to tell them. I text or face time my friends a lot to talk or to get homework done, which is very helpful. I also use my phone to listen to music when i'm bored or when i'[m not having the best day I just put music on. Negativity affects are getting headaches all of a sudden or my eyes starting to hurt very badly. Being on your phone sometimes makes you forget your obligations, such as chores or getting homework done. In the end we all have reasons to have benefits and negativity.
@Samantha30 I agree, my phone is my way of contacting my friends, family, etc. But my worst thing is that I go on it when I'm bored so I also need to get out of that habit.
I don't think I could go a year without my phone. I have to use it to communicate with my parents. I also use social media a lot and it's a lifestyle for me now so that would be super hard to not use for a year. And I would loose all my really high Snapchat streaks. So the benefits of having my phone is that i can call my parents when i'm lost of need help with something. But, it also negatively impacts my life because i'm like attached to my phone so i'm on it a lot when i could be doing more productive things.
Personally I'd say I spend about 1-2 hours on my phone everyday. The majority of the time spent on my phone is on Social Media and Music apps. I think if I wasn't exposed to social media, and had another was of listening to music, I could go a year without a smartphone. The benefits of having a smartphone is being able to contact family to let them know your whereabouts, being able to socialize with friends, ask questions about school, and see what is going on in the world. The worst part is being addicted to your smartphone. I do think this article persuades me to give up my phone for a year because it showed me all the good I could do for myself and the world. The best examples given were the plant, purify, save, and heal. If I didn't have a smartphone for a year, I would probably spend most of my time reading and growing my knowledge to do better in school and in life and going on adventures around the world.
@Krystian30 very good, I agree with everything. I feel as if your statement could relate to a lot of teens.
If I was gonna go a year round without out my phone I would be just fine. we all know having a phone is fun cause u can text an talk and even watch videos away from home. but as parent say when you stair at your phone for hours and hours and you don't socialize it kinda rots your brain. and video games are the same thing playing for hours and hours on one game you will start to get a headache. I could last a whole year without a phone because there are many activities outside i could do as well.
@zachery30 it would be easy for me too!
@zachery30 I feel the same.
I would say that I spend a good 5 or 4 hours on my phone each day usually texting and gaming but I do think that I could go a year without my phone if I really tired. Some benefits my phone has is that I can talk to my best friend that lives out of state and I can face-time him very easy. But some negative effects are that they make me spend less time outside. And yes this article does persuade me to not use my phone so often because I could use it a bit less although I really only use it for a few hours a day.
1
@Nicholas30 I mostly use my phone the same way as you, to talk to friends and play games.I would say i'm constantly on it and its a fight in my head if I should go outside or continue playing on my phone.
If I was to go a year without my phone I would totally be up to that challenge. Reason why is because at the beginning of Thanks giving break my parents took my phone away. when they took my phone I thought I couldn't live without it and go insane. I would argue with my parents to give me my phone back but I guess that time they were really serious about breaking my phone, so I stopped annoying and begging my parents to give the phone back. During that break I was getting really bored and didn't really like it, so I took out a book I that had in my backpack and started reading it. The book I was reading was started to get really interesting. I never knew a book was this enjoyable that I actually lived without my phone that entire Thanksgiving break.
@Yadira2019
I really like how you found a love for that book and found a way to occupied yourself without a phone.
@Yadira2019
I agree that it is hard not having your phone because it is a big part of your life. But not having your phone can do good things to you like you might learn some new things or read a really new good book.
@Yadira2019
That would be a challenge to live with out your phone in our generation, but it is possible to do and thats a good idea to read to waste time. Good job!
Each day i spend at least 6 hours on my phone. On my phone i go on social media like instagram, tik tock, snapchat and twitter also face timing people too who are close to me or in my family across the world. i could't go a year without my smartphone because it is important to my life and i contact friends/family and arrange when to meet up and where on the weekends. it means a lot because i get to do things that you cant do without one. No i could't go a year but i could go a couple of days. The benefits of my phone and having it are being able to face time people round the world see what people are doing too, talking to friends online and sending pictures like if you go to the beach. the negative section of having a smartphone and using it a lot is you are not only hurting your eyes but you are also using your data sometimes and can get charged for it also using electircity to charge it too but it affects the world and your money a lot more than you think. the article has convinced me too not use it for a year but i still would not be able to not use it for a year. This can change the world not just you it affects the money problems. If i had to then i would live my life always outside doing active things in life like bowling. soccer and other things too even though i'm not good at them it would be fun.
i spend about 5 hours a day on my phone looking at social media,playing games,watching youtude. You cant get away from your phone. people freak out when they cant find there phone that's how addicting your phone is. No one freaks out when they lose outdoor stuff. But the phone is a thing they cant lose or if they do its like there going to die.i couldn't go a year with out my phone i am always on my phone.
@owen2019 i agree that people freak out when they lose there phone that is true. i do agree that you could go a year with out your phone.
@owen2019 ya same i agree to people are really addicted to there phones
@owen2019 why do you go on your phone so much a day
If you don't have a smartphone some advantages are not having to pay for a phone and spend about $1,000 a year. If your not using your phone than you'll have more time time to exercise like walk or run then your blood won't be high and you won't have to pay for medication. Also without using your smartphone you'd have enough time to learn to languages. If you didn't have your smartphone though it would be a lot harder to communicate with family or friends.
@Alex2019 ok
I would spend about 12-13 hours on my phone a day. he things I do on my phone are watch YouTube, text, call, watch Netflix, and play games. I could go a year without my phone because I could be doing other things and I've already gone half a year without it. The only reason i would say no is because I've lived my life with a phone or an electronics so it could be hard but i could do it. My phone helps me wake up in the morning for school, call my mom to check in, and it reminds me to do things like do chores. It negatively affects my life by no interacting with my mom or dad and not listen. I don't have a smartphone right now I feel like its good to not be around negative people that could bring your day down on the internet.
@Tiare2019 I feel like playing on your phone for 12-13 hours a day is a lot. You could be helping your environment by planting trees or something.
@Tiare2019Being on your phone for 12 to 13 hours a day is a bit much . Instead of being on your phone for that long you could be going to hang out with some friends or be planting a tree.
@Tiare2019 thats not healthy bud
I spend lots of time on my phone. On average maybe 30-40 hours per week. I am trying to cut down on the usage because I know I have more important stuff to do then just staring at my phone. When I heard what we could do to change this, I knew I needed to follow these. Most of my time at home or hanging out with friends, I do it with the internet. I need to cut down because I've heard that it is not good to spend more than 15 hours a week on your phone. It's also not good for your brain. It's horrifying what the internet can do to your brain, how it makes your vocabulary smaller. It makes your brain less of a brain. The benefits to not having a phone, (from my experience) is that you are in a better mood. You do more stuff with people and do more things that are active and healthy for you. I think it's good to drop your phone once in a while to be more open. Open to the world, open to more activities. You are happier when not staring at your phone, and you are more talkative to a person. I think in general we should drop our phones for a week, and just experiment with the fun.
I did not have a smartphone until i turned 13 so i understand that there are quite a few advantages. i was much more protective with my time and got a lot more done with my days. I was in trouble a lot less and read quite a few more books. But there are advantages too, it is a big social element. Often times i was left out for social things because it was all planned over phones. I also am enabled to talk to my friends a lot more which is nice. I enjoy knowing everyone is doing good and if they aren't i enjoy being able to talk to them. I would definitely say there are more upsides to having a smartphone than downsides.
@Tomas I really liked how you put both side of having a smart phone in this response, Great Work.
@Tomas
Agreed, its easier to socialize online than it is in person because the smart phone is right in your pocket and the person you wanna talk could be miles away.
@Tomas amen honey.
The benefits that my smart phone has in my life are that I can learn on it and find things out that I may not have known. But it also helps me to contact my parent when there not home or when I need them. The device also lets my parents contact me, which allows me to do things outside of the house. Although some of the down sides of having one is the time lost. With that time lost I could be doing other things, such as ride my horse or even just spending more time with her. I would also have more time to do things like clean my room, do my homework, and to do chores or even just spend time with family.
Though I too do agree with this article, But theirs two sides of my option. but Phones are unique in ways that we didn't have years ago like communication in minutes. though we had letters but weeks maybe months before we heard a response. but also phones are mainly a toy that have some buttons that make a sound that is satisfying and want you to use it more. but ill give this article one thing. it is hard to drop this technology its some what an addiction with a screen. And i do know one thing my generation is going to ruin the world if we keep our faces in phone while we cross the street. So we don't really need phones, yet.
@ZaneRiches2019 ayyyyy thats pretty gooood.you go zane
I spend a lot of time on my phone. I wouldn't even be able to count the amount of time i pend on my phone. i listen to music on my phone most of the time. I can only have my iPhone 5, because my mom doesn't trust that i can keep it non cracked. I am happy with my phone because it actually has a headphone spot. all the extra cords are useless and a waste of pace. why take the headphone spot away anyway? so you can get people to spend more money buying a charger that also has a space for headphones? i find it very useless and annoying.
I feel that I don't spend much time on my phone. I use my phone to watch videos, to search up things,alarms to wake up,and to communicate with others through message. I think I could go a year without my phone because then I could focus more on things I need to at home and school. Without a phone I think that I could also try new things and not just be on my phone. A year without your phone can come to actually talking to people face to face. I think a phone negatively affects your life because then people can get too attached to it and not want to leave it alone. Another thing that it affects is to stop doing things such as homework and chores in the house.
I usually end up going on my phone as soon as i wake up through the rest of the day in chunks, spending my time on other things too, so I probably spend at least 6 or 7 hours in total on my phone. I usually only text on my phone and occasionally check social media. I do think I could go a whole year without my phone because its not a very big requirement to my life, and I lasted without a phone most of my life anyway. But really my phone really helps me communicate with my friends with distance so I know whats going on in their lives if I can't find out in person. The article, I think, has a good argument on how much we could do if we just put the same amount of time and money into something as we do with our phones. I think, if I had the chance, I would try to help with these things.
@Carly2019
I agree with everything you said and also I dont spend much time on my phone but I pretty much do the same things as you when I am on it.
@Carly2019 I think there are not many downsides to having a phone. They just have so many useful purposes. They do so much for us and help us and keep us entertained. Yeah I see why we should not be on our phone all the time but I feel like having a phone is better than not having one.
i spend at least thirty minutes or 2 hour on my phone ill text my friends go on Snapchat or Instagram and maybe watch Youtube or listen to music. i could maybe go without my phone for a year because once i gave my phone to my mom and she lost it for 2 years and then i got a new one. disadvantages that i have with my phone is that when your on it for a long time it heats up and the battery gets low and you have to wait and charge it.
I am pretty good at volleyball, drawing, and surprisingly bowling, but instead of doing all those things I would be on my phone, or my iPad, or watching TV. But if I took the time to get away from a screen, I could get better at drawing, I could be more fit and athletic, I could spend more time with my friends. But there is always two sides to an argument. So without a phone and no way to contact my friends, it would be harder to do things with them when there wasn't school and I wouldn't be able to enjoy music while exercising. I love having a phone, it helps with long distance communication, but I do agree with the fact that we are on them way too much and need to take a break from them more often.
@jaiden2019 I agree with not having a phone causes internal problems, and can be harder with doing things... but. When we pull away from these types of things we grow and become stronger without technology. Once we forget technology forever it will probably become better for us and
society. Yes, we definitely need to take a break from our phones more often, I think it would be nice to stray away from this for a while, just to be more open with people and have a greater time.
@jaiden2019 you couldn't have said it better, but i still am with the not giving up my phone.
@jaiden2019
Yes, with a phone we could not do the things that we enjoy and what we are good at. I am also pretty good at drawing, basketball and even soccer. I want to get better at these things and others.
If I didn't have a smart phone then there would obviously some advantages and disadvantages, Having a phone is a great way to keep up with whats going around you with the Government or even your friends if they put something on there phone on social media. Also you could have the ability to chat with people across the world if want or what ever you wanna do. The Disadvantages would obviously be addicted to it and constantly being on it, Also possibly getting distracted when you need to get your homework done that night. You could even possibly stay up all night being addicted to your phone when you have school in the morning.
i don't own a phone so i'm good
@nathaniel2019 its suppose to be 6 sentences. and was your opinion changed? mine was definitely not.
@nathaniel2019
I know how you feel I got my first one 2 days ago.
I only really use my phone when I'm away from home, like on my 40 minute bus ride home from school. I probably could go a year without my smartphone because I don't use it that much. It benefits me because if my parents need to contact me or I want to reach my friend, I can with the smartphone. The disadvantages with it are mainly that I don't pay attention to my surroundings when focused on the screen. It doesn't persuade me to give up my smartphone, though I do believe most of the things listed as examples are true, and could be accomplished if done. If I were to spend a year without my phone I wouldn't really miss it, considering most of my electronics time is spent on my laptop or console, rather then my phone. If I didn't spend any time on electronics however I would probably spend more time with family.
@Clayton I don't agree with you because I couldn't go a year without a phone. But i see why you wouldn't use it.
I spend about 2- 3 hours on my phone . The reason why its so low is because I go to school for 8 hours. Then I go home and have about 2.5 hours before practice. I'm at practice for about 1 hour and 30 minutes then when I get home I'm wiped out so I eat dinner and then go to sleep. I usually am on Instagram and listening to music.
@Steven2019 wow you have a busy day. i wold die without listening to music if i had to do any sports.
@Steven2019 That's good i guess. Godd job on not using it as much as I would.
I could not go a year without a smartphone. I couldn't because I use my smartphone all day. I use it to talk to my friends over social media. I also use it to call or text my parents. This would make it hard to stay in contact without one. I also use my phone too look stuff up on safari. I could also use my phone for music and a calculator. My life would be harder without one. This is why I could not go a year without a smartphone.
I spend at least a couple of hours on my phone each day but if I spent all day on my phone I would get nothing done. The things I do on my phone are look at social media, text people, and I look a the weather sometimes. I think I could go a year without a smartphone because I have plenty of other things I could be doing than looking a my phone. The reason why I could go a year without my phone is that there is so many other things to do in the world. You could spend more time hanging out with your friends and not be playing on your phone while hanging out together. Another reason that I could go a year is that I could pay way more attention to the things around me and I could spend way more time outside doing the things that I love to do. So that is why I could go a year without a smartphone.
@Jenna2019 I agree. there are tons of things to be doing. Even though the phone may help with homework and communication.
without phones you would be disconnected from the world. i my self and like many others use my phone to connect with friends and family. i also like being able to support my fave online creators. phones allow me to be able to plain meetings with friends and study sessions. i usually only spend 2-3 hours on my phone in a day. no i cant go a year without a phone and after reading the article my opinion is unchanged.
On the average I spend about 7 hours a day on my phone, I will text friends, play games and check my social media. Could I go a year without my phone? No, not at all. I wouldn't know whats going on, i wont be able to text my friends. My phone is what i use to talk to people because its hard for me to talk to someone about my feelings face to face. When I want to hangout with my friends i use my phone, when I'm done doing my chores I go on my phone, I use my phone for music on the bus, when i'm playing my PS3, when i'm doing the dishes, and many more stuff. My phone is part of my life.
@Kiara2019 its about the same to me
