Anyone who thinks video games should be safer obviously don't know what they are talking about. There are already many ways to avoid toxicity, simply hitting the mute button, turning off the chat, or just turn off the game.
I have one major question for whoever wrote this editorial. How can there be physical abuse in a digital world? especially when that is the point behind most games.
As a teenager, I play video games all the time. I'm only interested in playing online games as well, so I have to deal with many people on a day to day basis. Online video games are a way for people to shed their real life identity and do things they would never do in real life. Because of this, those players can be very "toxic." Its very easy to stop interacting with toxic people like this by just muting them. Almost every game with a multiplayer component has a feature to mute players or to hide the chat. I don't feel that game developers have to make their games safer when they already give their players the option to hide toxic behavior. These same young children in games use these games to escape their lives the same way teenagers or adults do. Companies make games so their consumers have a place to have fun and relax, if young children are going to partake in a community such as Call of Duty or Rust where the community can reach Chernobyl levels of toxicity, then that isn't the developer's fault, it is more the parent's fault than the child's or developers because a parent should be supervising what their children should be playing instead of letting them play any game that has online features.
online game are not very safe and i know the creator of a online game would not be very proud of having a lot of complaints over reported players
online video games could and should be safer for kids and adults
This article deals with video games, where we can find different types of people in front of the television. There are different types of video games for example: (action, shooter, sports and so on). There are adult users whose behavior is not exemplary for children. Within the online games we find the so-called "trolls" whose function is to annoy and cheat the players who really want to have a good time with their favorite video games.
Regarding to our personal opinion, we agree with the sections included in the article in the sense that the games should be somewhat controlled as there are too many young people, being a bad example for all of them, since in most games users use a very bad vocabulary. As the article comments, being too many hours playing the video game console is excess for all kinds of people, and in the most extreme cases, adults separate from their partners.
The article highlights the issue of harassment as some users take advantage of others who are more vulnerable to carry out a deception and they benefit of them.
I don’t play video games but I do know how inappropriate or toxic other people can be while playing online games. My two little cousins who are no older than ten are fortnite addicts, and a lot of the random people they play with are older than them and use explicit language. When I babysit them they usually play fortnite the whole time and almost every other word coming out of their teammates mouth is either inappropriate or a swear word. In my opinion if you are too young to be around this type of talk parents should be supervising what they play and who they play with and not just making video games age restricted or making them not enjoyable for older people. I do agree with having a content rating system as the related article suggested , this will make it easier for parents to protect their child form things they shouldn't be seeing or hearing and make it easier for older people to have fun and not worry about getting in trouble for slipping a swear word in front of a ten year old.
@Isabella P you can mute players.
personally I don't play a lot of video games. In the winter time when its cold and nasty i do play video games more. I think as long as children know the difference between real life and games then they'll be fine. The responsibility to teach them the difference is on the parents.
I think that online gaming can be very controversial simply because it can be interpreted several ways. People could look at is as a way for people to take advantage of people by making fun of them or getting them to give money. I look at is as a way to just play against other people that are like me just trying to get better at the game. I avoid the bad behavior of other players by muting them so I cannot hear them during my game so they can’t trash talk to me if they wanted to. Many people like to fire back at the inappropriate players by starting bad conversation.
I think online gaming is a fun experience for kids because you can meet new people and find friends for gaming. Most adults think gaming is nonsense but to some kids that's there happy place for awhile because it's calming they can make their own decisions and their brain is still working to find solutions to get pass levels on games....That's my opinion I know most will disagree.
Yes, sometimes I play games online, I normally play them on the weekends when I have free time or have friends over. No matter what game you play someone will be using abusive behavior when playing a game online with others.
I don't play any video games but most of my friends play a lot of video games. They are always talking about it. When I used to play I played Black Opps 2 and Destiny I spent so much time on those games. While playing online I hear lots of others players cursing when they get mad or “rage”. I don't think young children should play online unless they mute the other players microphones so they don't hear them talking. But other than the cursing online isn't that bad.
I know a lot of people that play online video games. I also play a lot of games myself. I would not consider video games toxic or plagued in trolls because lots of people don't lay them all day long. I know a lot of kids that play just a couple hours a day. I've never seen any inappropriate behavior on video games but I'm sure there are lots of people out thee that have bad behavior online. I've never got into it so much that I've broken anything, but things do get intense when you make a mistake and get mad. I do think video games are good for children because lots of kids get lots of use out of them. Many kids are very creative in school because video games helps them out dramatically.
I know a lot of people that play online video games, including my friends and my sibling, personally I don't play online video games because I don't like how my friends are when they play and I don't wan to get to attached to them. While my friends play they tend to ignore me more, even my boyfriend does occasionally. They also tend to get a little more aggressive while playing these online video games, they get angry and have a shorter attention span. They aren't that toxic to children, parents should know when to limit their kids playing video games before it does get too toxic for them.
I do play some video games but not very often. When I do play, it's mostly just Fortnight because that's the only one I know how to play. Some games may be a little too violent for younger kids so parents do need to supervise them when playing a game to make sure. Video games can be safe but can also not be for younger kids just because of the language and actions in games.
It says in the article that the gaming community is condoning violence by the images and by the gamers who play them. Sexist, racist, or homophobic insults and physical abuse to their avatar are a few of the things that the author wants the gaming community to fix so that it can be less “toxic.” They believe that gaming and streaming needs to be monitored better than it is now, in order to protect children from vulgar language and actions. All games are rated and children should be playing games that are E, E 10+, and maybe even T games because they are designed for kids. Plus, most streaming services and games have the ability to mute chats and block players who are using the platform for obscenities. I think that if a child were to play a game with an active chat, it should be up to the parents to let them use the chat or not. Parents should also be held responsible for the types of games their children are playing. If they don’t want their child to be exposed to those words and actions, then they should not condone the use of the game or streaming service. In conclusion, I strongly believe that it is up to the parent's discretion what kind of games and streaming services their children are exposed to, and it is their responsibility to know what could be said in the chat and what actions could be done in the game.
I will sometimes play games like the Call of Duty games or Minecraft or other games like that. I do believe, due to studies that have been done, that video games can make a person more violent if they have a particularly impressionable mind. I have also noticed that everyone swears a lot more and says a lot more rude things while playing video games. It makes me sad that some kids can experience racism or other things like that while they're just trying to have fun playing video games. I think there should be more monitoring on the chats of online video games.
I play alot of online games like Fortnite or Pubg as for my brother he plays Fortnite, For Honor, R6S, and black ops 4. There is alot of obscene language in the online gaming community in the lobbies or during a game with buddies there will always be obscene language. Online gaming shouldn't be for kids due to the fact everyone does say somethings not for kids or squakers we call them in the gaming community.
Personally, I play a lot of video games. I play Madden 19, Call of Duty, and many others. The gaming community today is not even close to being as bad as it was in 2012-2016. When I played during those years, everyone yelled inappropriate and offensive things to each other in the lobbies. Even I have trolled someone. Online video games are safe for children. They just have to be taught to not listen to the trolls. Obviously I do not think they should be playing games rated m games because they are specifically designed for people 17 and up. I think there is no way to prevent harassment, just to avoid it in general.
I do play video games but only on weekends. My favorites are the fortnite, Fallout and Call of duty series. Based on my experience I think online video games are safe for children depending on the game and how old the child is. I do not think people need to make gaming communities less toxic because a company has already tried and failed. Also because if you are younger than a thirteen you should probably not be playing the mature games like Call Of Duty because the servers will most likely be more toxic. I think that the child's parents should make sure that they are not exposed to a game that is not too inappropriate for the child so then they will also most likely not be exposed to toxic online chats either.
I do not play video games very much, the only video game that i ever really played was fortnite. I don't find that game fun any more so I don't play any type of video games anymore. A lot of my guy friends play games on their phones, or like 2K18 on their Xbox or play station. I don't think online gaming is that bad if you don't play it every second of everyday. Or that isn't the only thing that you do, as long as you have a life and you just like to play video games sometimes with your friends or in your free time then your okay. Yes I think online gaming is safe as long as you are smart with what you play and who you play it with.
yes, I still play online games, but not nearly as much as I use to. a lot of today's online games are full of people that just want to ruin your experience. all games are going to have players that use inappropriate language and go against the guidelines. In today's state of online gaming, there needs to be changes to make it a better environment for the children playing.
I do not play video games but a lot of my friends do. I do not have a favorite video game but currently a lot of my friends play Red Dead Redemption 2. I do not think video games are toxic, yes there is a lot of language used when people play together but they just get very interested in the game and get upset when they loose. In some way video games are not safe for all children. There can be a lot of graphic contest and language. I do believe it us up to the child's parents on how intense of games they can play.
Playing video games comes repercussions for playing the video games, You could get so into it that you forget tasks in the real world. I'm no better i'm stuck always spending my money on a free game. Every day i always get sucked into it, but it’s hard to stop it by just reading about it. I could just be one of those ads that kids see when there just scrolling through the internet. But if i could make one kid change how they are i’ve done my job. Video games do condone violence but most of the kids know that your only allowed to keep that in the game, so if the hardcore kids could just keep it under wraps then we wouldn't have trouble, but it's just a game
Yes I play online video games, but I think "trolls" in a community is an issue that gets too much attention. Giving them attention is what they want. We are failing to combat them by feeding into their tricks. I do not think that toxicity is much of an issue now that Fortnite exists to absorb much of the toxicity from other games normal people like to play. As long as there is a low denominator cash cow game like Fortnite, other games won't have to worry about a mass of toxicity.
Although I don’t play video games my 9 year old brother does and he loves to play games like Fortnite and Roblox. Sometime when I’m watching him play video games I hear or see obscene language and slurs. Even on games that I thought were kid friendly like Roblox. This worried me because I thought that my brother would start to pick up the obscene language spoken by players in the video games. After talking to my dad about it he thought it was best for us to always have someone in the room whenever he’s playing video games to make sure he doesn’t participate in the obscene language. In my opinion, I believe that video games are safe for children as long as you make sure you’re aware of anything that may be going on in the game. There are also plenty of parental controls available on most gaming devices to protect your child from hearing anything obscene.
Video games are not as bad as people say they are, games like Fortnite, call of duty, and overwatch ETC. Video games give players a in game muting/avoid option so that you can don’t hear or run into that player again. A good example is if you are playing a game such as overwatch or call of duty, these games (mainly overwatch) always need voice communication and is almost a must but overwatch is one game for example that is full of toxic players. Blizzard has gone out of there way to stop these types of people by having there own banning system, player report system, muting and “avoid this player” feature. This helps players begin to slowly push away the people that are toxic and begins to let people have a healthy game. Personally, It's not the games fault, it's the community and the creators fault in a sense, its the creators fault for not giving players more ways to block out the toxic people and give them punishments, games like overwatch and call of duty can’t have people 24/7 watching the game to find every single person but they can do a better job at punishing these people who get reported each day, they don't half to be instant but! They can at least put a little more time and effort into reading the reports that are given.
It’s a relatively safe way for kids to let off steam. If they’re not much good at sports, they have no other outlet for getting out their aggression. For that reason, maybe it should be toxic. Competitiveness in the athletic field is a lot nastier.
People all over the world play video games. They not only are a way to have fun and pass some free time, they also connect people from different countries, states, cultures, backgrounds, etc. Video games are a way to freely talk with someone while having fun and to meet new people you may not have had the chance to in everyday life. Video game chat is just like having a regular conversation, you wouldn’t normally hurl insults at someone you were having a face to face conversation with. This is the same with video game chat. Inappropriate language and racial and bias things to say shouldn't be allowed. There are all types of age groups online, and certain people shouldn’t ruin someone’s gaming experience because they don’t have a filter for the things they say.
Personally, I do not play many video games, but through my experiences, I find that there is a Toxic community. The people on these game can be very harsh but to be honest it doesn't bother me. I troll people all the time just for a laugh. I would not, however, do it to scare somebody. There is a point at which it isn't just trolling anymore and that's what people need to know. When I have to go on my little cousin's mic and yell at the other guys who are scaring him saying they are gonna kill him that's a little too far. One time the guys found out my address and I told them I will engrave their names on the bullets I will shoot them with if they come to my house. The community can be a scary place for little kids but there are many parent settings on the consoles and games. And I suggest that if your kid is a little sensitive I would highly suggest that you put those settings to use.
The article states that the gaming community is condoning violence by the images and by the gamers who play them. To be total honest the impulsive language online is just coming from other people so because the people who are playing the game they think that one could do anything to them because they don't know them in real life and also because of this reason youtube has now be demonetized youtube videos because of repulsive language .
Through a series of observation through youtube videos you may notice that when whoever is playing a particular game and get killed n the most horrible way and they just let out a river of swears they normally bleep it out or edit the clip
Therefore the people now a day need to change for themselves and for others so they wont get the title : “ the toxic player”
There is someone everyone likes and that’s videogames.Videogames help people escape their realities, help interact with different kinds of people, and see new things. But isn’t terrible when you bump into some toxic. In the past couple of years the gaming community has became more and more toxic and kids have been bullied such as if they are not good at the game or if they’re a little kid. Multiplayer games such as Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and etc have shown high levels of toxicity but these games need communication so if a teammate makes the wrong callout they will get yelled at. There is no way to get rid of these toxic players as long as gaming is around and so we just have to stay away from them.
Video Games are one of the most popular things with teenagers along with Music and Social Media(Instagram and Snapchat). The most played Video game at the time is Fortnite on all PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox one ,and even Mobile. The players in the gaming community get really, really, toxic. It get worse as time goes by. For every 20 games you play you will run into at least 15 toxic players (the other 5 most likely don’t have mics). I love playing Video Games. My most favorite Video Game ever is Fortnite. I love the 100 Players PVP the fact that it updates every week it’s free to unlock certain cosmetic items. Me and my friend also run into people that swear and say inappropriate things when we are playing. If they had a children only version of certain Video games. I love how they have giant updates with the game every 2-3 months. Yes, They need to make Games less toxic because a lot of the toxic players can make a lot of younger children cry or something which i greatly disagree should be done. If someone says anything bad in Video Game What they say should be censored or muted.
The toxicity that occurs in video games is unacceptable. From racial slurs to homophobic insults there are many different ways that people ruin the gaming experience for others. Children are constantly restricted from playing certain games due to the words and actions of others. Video game creators must take more action in eliminating toxic behavior. Things can be taken out of hand very often. I believe cursing should not be restricted as you should be able to express your feelings however racial slurs, homophobic insults etc.. should be controlled video game creators have the power to monitor what is said and ban people from playing there game. So why have they not? Many games are working hard on stopping this but is there enough effort being put in. I believe that maybe in order to protect children they can make it so you get grouped with people similar to your age. When you sign up to play a game normally you must enter your age. So why can they not make it so children under a certain age cannot be grouped together with older children who normally tend to be more veered towards such ignorant behavior. I have noticed in some games that they have a system where if u are exhibiting reckless behavior you are grouped with people making the similar actions. Therefore, If other games began to use this system maybe they may be able to limit the amount of children being exposed to such vile behavior if they cannot eliminate it completely
After viewing the New York Times article Online Video Games, My parents do not allow me to play video games. I think it depends on what game it is to whether it is safe or not. I think some of the games that are really violent can cause harm to children. There is research to show that sometimes because because of violent online games children commit crime when they grow up. One of the world's most dangerous terrorist at age 11 was a kid who loved games, by 21 he was a hacker and ruthless killer for ISIS. This is one of the many situations where this has happened. I do not think that you can stop children from playing violent games because there is always around limitations that are set. Overall, this is my take on online gaming.
There is something everyone likes to do, play games. People all over the world play games and video games are just a new way of looking at playing games. Video games let you experience a new reality and look at the world in a new way. But the communities video games have can become extremely toxic. Games without voice chat are fine and single player games but when you come to multiplayer games and games with voice chat they can be filled with trolls and toxic players. Then there’s the hackers. The ruin the fun for everyone. But the toxic, troller hacker is the worst. I feel like the gaming communities are falling apart as we speak. Some games aren’t good for little children because of the behavior of graphic images. But video games have room to grow. People can make their job playing video games and make a living off it. They do the thing they love. Video games are a creation of god. They will help generations and they solve problems for millions of people (I don’t know what I’m saying I need to get to 200 words, I just need ten more words, just ten more and done!).
I do play video games and my favorite is Shadow of The Colossus. I think that the majority of the gaming community is regular gamers with some pros and few trolls. So the gaming community might seem bad but once you become a part of it you will see it is not as bad as you think. While most gamers are just your typical everyday gamers, then you have the pro gamers which compete in gaming tournaments and they compete for a prize which is usually money. Then there are trolls who purposely mess with other people to ruin the others game play just because they think it is fun to mess with people. But most of the time people in the gaming community are nice and don’t troll others for the fun of it. On another note there are sometimes people who get so mad at games they end up being more aggressive and do bad decisions just to make them feel better. But most are not plagued by anger and stay themselves even if they get mad at games.
As a teenager, I have played my fair share of online video games, especially ones that include violence. Some of the most popular video games today include violence and have things like voice chat. The gaming community can be described as “toxic” which is true in its own ways, and in only a few games. The video games that do have voice chat are the ones that seem to have a large amount of trolls and vulgar language. When children are buying video games it is their parents responsibility to look at whether the game has a rating higher than rated E,E 10+, or rated T games. These games are meant for younger kids and are less likely to have mature scenes or graphic themes. Certain games have a chat box where players can write things out that can be seen by other players. When games have these chat boxes they are usually scanned before they are posted. If the writing includes racist, sexist, or vulgar language then the person will be removed and will end up with a temporary ban. The chat filters are sensitive and may be fooled by words that are very close to words that are supposed to be censored. When a person trolls in a chat box they are more likely to be punished and will be given a ban. If a person with a mic says anything vulgar they are less likely to be punished, unless there is a way to report or block the person doing the trolling.
In my opinion i feel like game creators and gaming console creators could make gaming and social communication because their are a huge amount of the population of kids that are playing on video games. Most kids that play gaming will often disrespect their parents or peers because of the things and verbal contract that the children hear in the game or from players around the world.

The internet is a place where people can say many things without repercussions, in video games however, many of them that are geared towards younger children have systems put in place that scan what people can type or say in the chat, and violations could result in a ban from the playing environment. As a teenager, I play games where I expect to hear obscene language from time to time, and I was fully aware when I joined these certain gaming communities. Games with voice chat however, are a totally different ball game, where it is almost impossible to track who says what, which creates an environment that could be open to inappropriate topics or bullying. But it is entirely the choice of the player whether they can join that chat, and at that point, it should be up to the parent to decide whether they are okay with their child participating in a voice chat environment. As I grew up playing video games on the internet, I have experience my fair share of bullying and of course it feels terrible. But it is also a learning experience and a tool to build up thicker skin. But in the end, it is entirely the players choice whether they join these chats. If parents fully understand that if a child enters the adult chat, they could be exposed to toxic material, and they still let their children play, it is the parents fault, not the video games'
Are online games safe for children? Well in most cases they don’t have to be. Most of the games that come to mind or are mentioned are M-17 games that are meant to be played by a young adult who can handle violent images or verbal assaults and if they can’t there is always the mute all option. If you don’t reveal anything about you then you can’t be attacked so if your worried about troll you can just not use a mic. Most stores are good with checking ID’s and will prevent young kids from buying games their not suppose to. If underage children are getting them then it is usually through their parents. At that point, it is the parent's responsibility to decide if their child should be exposed to content within a game. The other problem is that attempts to moderate online activity have usually backfired. Auto chat filters, for instance, can be bypassed or are too sensitive allowing trolls to use them to their advantage, baiting people into saying words close to a banned word so that they removed and may receive tempory bans. Other forms of moderation resulted in people mass reporting Youtubers or streamers resulting in them getting a similar punishment. When it comes down to it the moderation that can be placed on online games is usually ineffective and doesn’t accomplish its goal. The best way to reduce toxicity is to just make a good game so that people will be happy with it and not take their frustrations out on other players
I do play video games but only on weekends. My favorites are the Halo, Fallout and Call of duty series.

I think that all video games are safe for children except the games that are outside of the teen rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). Many video games offer in-game muting options so that you can not hear or see anything another player does for example if you are playing a cooperative game there is always a voice chat mute option to prohibit voice activity from coming through to you. Personally, I do not think that anything needs to be done to online gaming communities because as said before there are multiple methods to prevent verbal harassment and written harassment. The people that should make sure children are not exposed to certain content in video games are the parents. The ESRB is legally required to rate every video game at least 24 hours before a game is released, with this ratings the game title is also required to say what content is exposed in the game. For example, most mature rated games (M17+) say there is drug references, violence, tobacco references, alcohol references, and language. Parents can accurately see what games are appropriate for their children to play but they do have the choice to allow children to play mature rated games.
The online gaming community is extremely huge. There is also going to be cyber bullying no matter how much people try to stop it. There will always be "online trolls" that say offensive content and conversations. But if you want to stop it I believe it depends on how the game is rated age wise. If you want to make a kid friendly online video game it should be a game rated E for everyone but it the online game can develop a chat filter or not chat at all through the game. Verbal harassment has been a serious case for people that don't know how to deal with it but when in reality the online troll doesn't know anything about you and just says stuff to make you feel down. It's unfortunate to see people are and can be majorly affected by cyber bullying. But as video games evolve it can be either more common or less common depending how online game creators create the games. If there ever is a chat system online where its easy to become verbally bullied I believe there should be some sort of ignoring system where the victim can just not be able to hear or say what they are saying.
