Ivanka Trump’s Emails Could Provide New Democratic House With Fodder

Worried but hopeful (Delaware)
Ivanka wants us to believe that she didn't know what the "Lock Her Up" chants were about. Wow, can't wait to see the SNL skit.
Rebecca Ryan (Chicago, IL)
Seriously? How is this any different from Hillary? After all the chants of “lock her up” and cries of “but her emails” why are we not being more critical of Ivanka? Why is this NOT front page news? Why is Trump defending this hypocrisy?! Ok we know the answer to my last question, or the answers...we know it’s because 1. She’s his daughter, 2. Ivanka is not a rival, 3. Trump just doesn’t care because, well, it’s just not a campaign or rally stop. This kleptocracy seems to be hitting one low after another with seemingly no consequences, no checks from preventing the formation of a monarchy or dictatorship based upon lies and fears. I can only hope and pray that Mueller continues to take the wind out of Trump’s bad hairdo and remove one support after another!
Grennan (Green Bay)
Steve Bannon's nickname for Ms. Trump was so vicious--The Princess Royal--not just because it implies entitlement. It describes the very inability to understand the insult. A combination of self-unawareness and lack of ...perception? historic knowledge? Intellectual depth? Not just lower-case 'p', as in Ms. Trump's statement about an inauguration walk being her "princess moment". But, as he also reportedly tried to explain, she was a staffer, not First Daughter.
James Young (Seattle)
So let's see, Trump derided Clinton for using a private email account, but seems okay with it, when it's his daughter doing it. But isn't it the same crime that Trump want's to lock Hillary for, I believe it is. While we can split hairs all day, as to whether or not government business was being conducted, or even if the server wasn't at Trumps home. Nevertheless, if it's illegal to use a private email account to send government business, then that law applies to Trumps daughter. This isn't a law that can be applied only to those who are a political rival, or just because you dislike them, (like Trump does Hillary). What's good for the goose is good for the gander. If Trump hasn't learned that those same laws you accuse Clinton of breaking by using a private server, apply to his family as well, Trump should know, even if Trump thinks he's above the law, he isn't and Mueller will prove that fact....
Eugene Gorrin (Union, NJ)
Perhaps Ivanka should receive the same standard of treatment as was enjoyed by Secretary Clinton: a 2-year FBI investigation and 11 straight hours of testimony before Congress. Those investigations uncovered no trace of corruption on Hillary Clinton’s part. Will the same be found of Ivanka (or her husband Jared, who also used a private server while serving in his capacity as senior advisor to the president)?
Errol (Medford OR)
I am amused at this controversy because I am an anti-partisan who is convinced that all politicians are corrupt, all are hypocrites who think rules are to be forced on others by them but do not apply to the rulers. Of course, the Trump family, including the president himself, attempt to profit from his election and so kept their businesses while joining the government. Those businesses are a perfect vehicle for hiding the payment of bribes. Of course, Ivanka doesn't follow the rules about private use of email. Hilarious, too, is the predicament the Democrats and Republicans are in relative to Ivanka's use of private email. The Democrats spent the entire nomination and election seasons trying to make us believe that Hillary's use of private emails was a trivial matter. Now the Democrats will hypocritically condemn Ivanka's same behavior. The Republicans spent the entire nomination and election seasons telling the nation that Hillary's use private emails was a grave matter jeopardizing national security. Now the Republicans will hypocritically portray Ivanka's same behavior as trivial. ALL politicians are corrupt. ALL politicians are hypocrites.
James Young (Seattle)
@Errol NO they weren't making it "trivial" what they said was while it was stupid, it wasn't illegal.
MykGee (Ny)
The real scandal is that she works in the White House.
Grandma (Midwest)
“Crooked Ivanka” has she ever taken care of her kids? She has a nanny but the rest of us can’t even have birth control pills. Go home Ivanka while you still can.
Grandma (Midwest)
Ivanka is more guilty than Hillary since she has no right being in the White House at all besides nepotism and she has no political savvy to guide her. Unlike seasoned politico Hillary therefore she is stupid politically. I say LOCK HER UP!
Grandma (Midwest)
Besides Trump tries to pull anymore stunts on Hillary Clinton or Comey best he look at how to save his precious Ivanka from prosecution. She has no right to even be in the White House much less politicize.
Mulholland Drive (NYC LA)
Our American Democracy has its own forest fire...it is called The Donald Trump Presidency. How many more acres of the Constitution and National Reputation need to burn before heads begin to roll...?? It's disgusting watching this man and his fake family tear this country apart and profit off it.
Independent (the South)
Anybody remember the George W Bush White House private e-mail server? gwb43.com 22 Million e-mails deleted from the time of the selling of the Iraq invasion. https://www.newsweek.com/2016/09/23/george-w-bush-white-house-lost-22-million-emails-497373.html
John Grillo (Edgewater, MD)
Several years ago, Ivanka and her brothers came within a whisper of being indicted for fraud in connection with the devious marketing of condominiums in the Trump Soho project in New York. It was reported that although prosecutors in the Manhattan District Attorney's office strongly wanted to pursue criminal charges against them, D.A. Cyrus Vance objected. Questions were raised about Vance's surprising decision. She and her brothers are the children of Don the Con, and employed by his notorious company. That's all you need to know.
Time2play (Texas)
Let's not join Trump and his followers in their chanting. We really don't need to follow their behaviour. The real story here is the hypocrisy of Trump and family. He continues to denigrate Clinton but I doubt he will have his daughter added to his tirade and pushing his so-called base to join in.
Michael Gallagher (Cortland, NY)
So Ivanka is using a cloud-based private email address, and her dad talks on an unsecured iPhone that the Russians and Chinese listen in on. Lock THEM up! Lock THEM up!
Patrick Sewall (Chicago)
Can we all now start shouting, "Lock HER up", now that little daughter is guilty of the same thing that Clinton did? it wouldn't matter if we did, because the ignorant masses won't understand the point we're trying to get across.
Joe Six-Pack (California)
LOCK HER UP! (Where have I heard that before?) Donald Trump will follow Ivanka anywhere. Once they're together in the same cell, we can throw away the key.
N Thompson (Hyattsville, MD)
Are we supposed to stand and chant "Lock her up! Lock her up!" ? How can she have been so unaware of this situation when her tweeting, bellicose father, The President, was repeatedly bringing it up in reference to Mrs. Clinton?
Question Everything (Highland NY)
Let's see how Ivanka carries herself through an 11 hour grilling by a Congressional Committee.
J Jencks (Portland)
This article needs more substance. I don't know how much more detailed information is available to the NY Times. But I hope they will find MUCH more and really focus in on the hard points. 1. How many emails? 2. Who were they addressed to and did those people cross any lines by responding to them? 3. How secure was the server used? 4. Did any of these emails contain classified information? 5. Were they all preserved for the record as claimed? A lack of specifics opens up stories like this to the "fake news" complaint. Please pursue this much more. A few quotes from some random individuals isn't enough.
Ron Brown (Toronto)
How's that swampy drainy thingy coming along? Asking for a friend.
Gene Cass (Morristown NJ)
My personal theory is that Ivanka knew what she was doing all along and this was her passive-aggressive payback for incest she suffered from her father. She's the "Smart Trump" afterall.
Amelia (Northern California)
Oh hi New York Times you blasted Hillary's emails all over your newspaper and your website for months. I had to search wayyyyy down the website to find this story. Do better. We expect to see you and Ms Haberman carrying on about Ivanka and her emails for months to come, because we know how much you care about fairness and balance in your coverage.
Tony (New York)
Why is this even news? Hillary Clinton proved that using your personal email for government business, even classified business, is perfectly legal. So why does anyone care now, especially The Times?
daytona4 (Ca.)
We all know that Trumps children are dummies. However, Ivanka was not dumb in this instance, she was simply arrogant, you know, "I'm special," attitude. Ivanka, Kushner and Donald Jt., have no business in the White House unless they visit, pure and simple. The reason Kushner is up close and personnel to the Saudi Arabian Prince, the murderer, is because he is always looking for money and investments. I'm sick and tired of those people sticking their noses where they don't belong. There is hope in the future however. I think Donald Jr., will soon be indicted by Mueller. He should be indicted for just being so stupid.
KL (Plymouth Ma)
Lock Her Up.
B.L. (Houston)
NYT, I hope you are planning the next installment on this topic. You can't get away with just this one. Readers expecting it.
Eugene Gorrin (Union, NJ)
Crooked Ivanka. Lock her up! Lock her up!
Steven of the Rockies ( Colorado)
Ivanka...,Ivanka..., is it not a common Russian name? If the President's daughter committed the same crimes, that the President crucified Senator Clinton of committing, will Trey Gowdy question her for 3 years?
AV (Jersey City)
Lock her up!
Hi Pylori (S Florida)
Three words...Lock. Her. Up.

Dear Ivanka, Grow up.
Next Conservatism (United States)
What this vapid mannequin is doing there at all is the big question.
Gruzia Shvili (NYC)
The real scandal is that she's in the White House to begin with. Everything else is just what follows naturally from that fact.
B Nelson (Seattle)
Dear NYT, since you were so obsessed with Hillary Clinton's emails and the historic nature of her rule-breaking, please direct us to the part of this story where you explain how Ivanka's use of personal emails to conduct the administration's business is "possibly breaking rules"? You know, the description of how this actually isn't permitted, which you repeatedly reminded us of over and over in the dozens and dozens of stories you published about Clinton. The whole he-said, she-said political tennis match play-by-play in this piece is fascinating and all, but journalists actually have a responsibility to explain what is permitted or not permitted and why it matters. Unbelievable that you're STILL doing this. Do better.
Mark Seligman (Berkshire’s )
Given her father’s over the top propaganda re Clinton use of a personal email account, that whole family should have bent over backward to adhere to law....right out the chute. To me this just shows the arrogance and stupidity of the trumps. How did we get to deserve these beings? I rub my eyes every day.
Brad C (Ogden, Utah)
I trust that the NY Times will breathlessly cover this story, writing daily updates on what may or may not have been included in the emails and anticipating the exquisitely timed release of a new batch of emails by Julian Assange. Or have you learned something in the past two years?
Woman (America)
This administration reminds me of high schoolers more and more. “Oh I didn’t know,” she said.
EA (Nassau County)
OK, New York Times--I've been reading the paper all my life and have been a subscriber for years upon years. And now I'm telling you it's time to make up for the fact that for weeks during the 2016 campaign you plastered your pages daily with story after story about Hillary Clinton's emails as if there were actually something worth reporting about them, while you gave Trump's outrages a pass as if they were normal. I expect to see a story about Ivanka's emails on the front page every day from now until next summer. You owe it to us.
Cato (Oakland)
Pathetic to see liberals trying to tie this to the same abuse of Hillary Clinton's email. Ivanka didn't have ANY classified emails, never deleted any emails, didn't hide the fact that she was using the email, didn't keep a secret email server in her house, and even told congressional leaders of her use. As opposed to HRC who lied to Obama, State Dept. lawyers and the American people about even having a email server in her house, deleted emails before FBI investigators could get to it, used it for highly classified material which was later found on her assistant's laptop, etc, etc.
AV (Jersey City)
@Cato Really a pathetic post to absolve the Trump clan of any wrongdoings. Ivanka deserves the safe fate as Hillary.
Claudia U. (A Quiet Place)
So once again, we sidestep the act itself so that we can focus on insulting the members of the opposing political party, huh Cato? (And the NYT labels this with a “Times Pick!”) This is why society's elite (of either political stripe) keep getting away with garbage like this. Because the "public" is more interested in picnicking on each other than it is on focusing on the real abuses (of all levels of intensity) by the "haves."
Next Conservatism (United States)
@Cato Is there anything as amusing as an embarrassed, defensive Trumpist rationalizing so belligerently that smoke comes out of his ears?
Mike (Alaska)
As a former low-level federal employee, it is literally beaten into you that you NEVER use personal email for government information. There simply is no reason to do it. Anyone who believes that Ivanka (or Hillary or Huma) didn't know what she was doing is absolutely wrong, especially after her father's continuous attacks on Hillary for her email escapades. For low-level employees you would get a warning or disciplinary action. For a White House employee, nothing short of removal of her security clearance should occur.
Thomas D. Dial (Salt Lake City, UT)
@Mike As a retired mid-level federal Defense Department IT employee I can state that use of a private email service, or server, is generally authorized in some circumstances. For example, when out of office (as with one of the messages American Oversight released) a private service may be used as long as that does not compromise classified information. The fundamental problem with the clintonemail.com arrangement is that Ms. Clinton was the director of a major federal department, with operational authority over worldwide operations. Moreover, by apparently using the unauthorized server for all of her government email she effectively compelled her staff to do likewise, putting them is a bind and, despite denials, used it for classified material for which it was not, and could not lawfully have been, authorized. While Ivanka Trump certainly should not have done what she apparently did, none of that applies to her receiving, and occasionally sending, messages from a private server.
Stefan (Berlin)
It must be noted here, since the Trump's have been very vocal about the Hillary email issues, that a private server, if managed by professionals, at least is private.
Brian Jarrell (Georgia)
It was compromised, so it wasn't so private. Private only in the sense it wasn't a governorment server.
James (Boston, MA)
Not a surprise that Ivanka doesn't pay attention to the rules. The Trump family cares not about the public, principles, fair play, rules, ethics or the law. They care about self-enrichment, self-privilege, and amassing power to themselves. Otherwise, completely unqualified people such as Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who would never be hired to work in any administration or any government position because they don't know anything about public policy or the law, would not have accepted positions in the White House. The thought of Jared Kushner taking charge of mid-east peace policy makes my stomach turn. In what universe should he be consulted on any such matter? His business is exploiting renters and overpaying for real estate. Similarly Ivanka, who peddles accoutrements that boast few or no distinguishing features other than her name. The whole Trump family simply rides on the coattails of paterfamilias Fred Trump and the latent and not-so-latent racism and xenophobia of the American public. D. Trump is an obvious know-nothing and his children don't fall far from that tree.
John Townsend (Mexico)
Where is Gowdy when he's needed. He harangued Clinton endlessly on this same email business so he's more than prepared to go after trump spawn. Duty calls. What's good for the goose is good for the gander!
Joe Barnett (Sacramento)
I'm sure it is no problem, but Justice should investigate it to be sure. This and Mr. Trump's regular use of an Iphone point out the hypocrisy of their attacks on Hillary. If she is using her phone for this, her location can be tracked putting secret service agents at unnecessary risk.
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
Who knew irony was do delicious.
Jonathan Katz (St. Louis)
Mrs. Trump is a private citizen, and what she does is not official government business. This cannot be compared to a Secretary of State using a private email account to transact official government business.
Eugene Gorrin (Union, NJ)
@Jonathan Katz. Ivanka Trump is not a private citizen. She is a top White House Adviser and, as such, is subject to the Presidential Records Act. What she does at the White House is official government business.
jeff (nv)
@Jonathan Katz Her official title is assistant to the president; her husband, Jared Kushner, has the title of senior adviser to the president. She even has a WH.gov web page; sounds pretty official to me.
Maggie2 (Maine)
As journalist David Corn on Ari Melber's "The Beat" so accurately stated last night, Ivanka and Jared are like the wealthy characters, Daisy and Tom Buchanan in "The Great Gatsby". As narrator and character, Nick Carraway, described them: " They they were careless people, Tom and Daisy. They smash people and things, and then retreat back into their money and vast carelessness".
earthgve 21st (Portland,OR)
Is her actions such a surprise when we know that the trump business model was to lie to investors to gain money and when the business tanked to walk away with all of the money. Her whole way of life is a fraud along with her brothers and father.
James C (Virginia)
"I didn't know", laughable excuse from one who was part of the Lock Her Up smear campaign. Very similar to telling highway patrol, I didn't know the speed limit was only 55.
michjas (Phoenix )
It boggles the mind that Ms. Trump was unaware of the rules regarding private emails. I believe the subject was discussed in about 9 million newspaper articles. It appears that Ms. Trump doesn't read much.
Eugene Gorrin (Union, NJ)
@michjas Yes, absolutely right. After the 2016 election, in which we learned that government email retention protocols are among this nation's most sacred duties, top White House adviser Ivanka was staggeringly unclear on how all that email business should work. Either she doesn't read much, or she doesn't comprehend well, or she thinks the law and rules don't apply to her (like her dad).
R. R. (NY, USA)
This violation should be treated just like Hillary's violation was treated.
Jaime (Upstate nY)
The point here is that Jared and Ivanka think their supporters are dumb rubes and have stated as much. Why doesn’t the media cover that? No it’s just Hillary’s emails and her deplorables comment out of context
Sam Kanter (NYC)
It doesn't seem to matter what they say or what they do. Their sheep will still follow them. Hopefully the Dems will start holding them to account for this travesty of an administration until the swamp is truly drained.
Giskander (Grosse Pointe, Mich.)
What's the current status and level of Ivanka's security clearance.
Meredith Russell (Michigan)
Truly the most worrisome thing about this is the disingenuous statement that she didn't know it was a problem. Where was she during the later weeks of the campaign? Does she really expect anyone to believe she is that oblivious to current events? If this is true, it brings the self-centered cluelessness of this woman into focus. If it is a lie, why not come up with a better lie? Ugh.
Aristotle Gluteus Maximus (Louisiana)
More opposition nonsense. The situation has already been corrected. It's over, nothing to see here. Even federal agencies with responsibility for enforcing regulations seek correction of any violations of rule or law before they entertain the idea of enforcement actions or punishment. There is no case. These so-called "watch-dog" organizations are trying to make complaints about anything they can think of, or invent. One even filed a complaint against the press secretary because of a hat worn by a visitor to the White House.
Mike (Boston)
Ivanka Trump uses her personal email to conduct government business while Donald Trump continues to use his personal cellphone to do the same. It’s all part of Trump arrogance that says rules are written for other people and not us. Meanwhile Russian and Chinese government hackers are laughing at our stupidity. To quote Lord Ramsey Bolton, “if you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”
Thomas D. Dial (Salt Lake City, UT)
@Mike This would carry more weight if Ivanka Trump did, in fact, "conduct government business." The email messages American Oversight obtained and release do not suggest that she does so to a significant degree.
Minneapolis Maven (Minneapolis)

BillFNYC (New York)
The issue was nothing with Hillary Clinton and is likely nothing with Trump. However, this one issue does demonstrate their hypocrisy, arrogance and stupidity. More relevant will be the investigations into the finances of this deeply dishonest and greedy family.
Roy Hill (Washington State)
Crooked Ivanka? Lock her up! Dad too.
KarenE (NJ)
She should be held to the same standards as anyone else . There are only two possibilities here and neither bode well for her as far fulfilling her duties in an administration position . She either doesn’t care , which in my opinion is the most likely , or she’s too stupid to know that she’s not supposed to do that . I don’t think she’s stupid , I think she just considers herself above the law just like her corrupt father.
McGloin (Brooklyn)
The left shouldn't chant lock her up. We should chant, Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial!
Dems should run a MAGA campaign (Pittsburgh, PA)
I guess we’ll finally find out how much Republicans really cared that Hillary did the same. Are you gonna lock your daughter up, Trump? There is no shortage of hypocrisy from this administration, but this is certainly the most blatant and damning example.
Curtis Hinsley (Sedona, AZ)

I am concerned about the part where she had her schedule on her personal e-mail. She goes to many events with our president. That could be a national security problem. Anyone could see in advance where Mr. Trump would be too.
Thomas D. Dial (Salt Lake City, UT)
@Ellen The president's event schedule generally is publicly known and published regularly. That it might be available in email to or from a family member or adviser is of no consequence.
mike (florida)
One part of me wants democrats to start hearings on her e-mail usage until 2020 because republicans used Benghazi hearings to find out about Hillary using her personal e-mail. It worked well for them. This would be called politics. But the other side of me wants to get the nation's business done and we hope we do.
Alan J (Ohio)
Surely Jim Jordan will lead the investigation! He seemed very concerned when Hillary did it.
Bill (Texas)
"she did not create a private server in her house or office" Did she use Yahoo mail? Gmail? Did she think that was secure? "there was never classified information transmitted, the account was never transferred or housed at Trump Organization, no emails were ever deleted and the emails have been retained in the official account in conformity with records preservation laws and rules" I suppose all of that can be quickly verified in the hearings through thorough questioning. No, I don't really think it is politically a good idea to make a sham of an investigation as the GOP did with Hillary. It's just that Trump and the GOP are so deep into self-parody that it hurts my head.
Thomas D. Dial (Salt Lake City, UT)
@Bill Gmail, Yahoo mail, and similar services are supported by a large and highly skilled IT staff, and are generally as secure as the individual user wishes. Accounts can be compromised by such things as poor password choice, password recovery questions based to which the answers are easily guessed or publicly knowable (Sarah Palin fell for this one), or phishing. Most of those apply equally to private servers. The difference is that system and security administration often are far less capable than Google's or Yahoo's.

@John if you're a fan of Trump tell it to him - he also has no business in the White House. "Lock her AND HIM up"..
Religionistherootofallevil (NYC)
This is so unfair. As one commenter here wrote, "so what?" Surely we have learned by now that this administration should not have to worry about such trivia as laws, ethics, morality, scientific knowledge, respect for our allies and so on. They are making America great (again!) and if that takes complete disregard for history and precedent so be it. Didn't we learn our lesson when wise Mitch McConnell refused to even consider a SCOTUS nominee? Aren't we all benefiting? Surely we are. Otherwise there would be consequences for the sustained skullduggery we have witnessed since 1.20.2017.
Jim (California)
We are ignoring the much bigger problem with the Trump family administration. What will happen when they all are no longer in office? They all have demonstrated a level of lying that no other administration has experienced. They will leave with a trove of high security information and will be able to tell whomever, whenever, they wish.
MuddyWater (Vancouver B.C.)
Oh great the Democrats have a rallying call for the Presidential election. "Lock her up.! Lock her up!" Isn't irony a wonderful thing.

In the words of her father: LOCK HER UP!

I sure hope Ivanka isn’t asked to turn in her resignation over this. It would be a loss of a great talent who is just trying to make America great (and increase sales of her brand).
rjk (New York City)
It seems to me there are five separate issues here, with some blurry lines between them: national security, governmental transparency, the emoluments clause, blatant hypocrisy and political expediency. If the intricacies of national security policy aren't above my pay grade, the technical aspects certainly are. With regard to the emoluments clause, the Trump family has already given us plenty of reasons to seek access to their financial records. This latest fuzziness on Ivanka's part is just one more. Her willful and entitled sense of exceptionalism here reminds us that she's her father's daughter. While I have no problem with playing hardball politics in the Age of Trump, I doubt that - barring further damaging revelations - there's much to be gained here by the Democrats. So far, E-Vankagate pales in comparison to scores of others. What I continue to find startling, however, is this administration's total lack of transparency and accountability. It began with Trump's brazen refusal to separate himself in a meaningful way from his business interests while he occupies the White House. Then, despite Trump's call to drain the swamp, there was his immediate softening of restrictions for lobbyists and others with vested interests to join the administration, not to mention all the waivers to get his cronies higher salaries. Deals are being made behind closed doors to sell off public interests for private profit. Remember Director Pruitt's phone booth?
EdwardKJellytoes (Earth)
@rjk....and you are surprised by what...and WHY?
Susan (Charlotte, NC)
The idea that she was unaware of the rules for using her personal email for government business is laughable, as are most things that come out of the White House spin room. Just one more lie for the pile of lies growing in this administration.
BassGuyGG (Melville, NY)
That Ms. Trump would be so careless after two years of hearing "Lock Her Up" chants speaks volumes of her arrogance and attitude that the rules don't apply to her. It's the very same accusation her father's partisans leveled at Hillary. Truth be told, Ms. Trump was no business whatsoever in the White house other than to find opportunities to self-deal and profiteer. One can only hope with the changeover in the House she and the rest of the family will finally be called out on it.
Jake (Texas)
So what?
ConcernedThoughtPrayer (California)
@Jake Exactly. I felt the same way about Hillary's use of private email. So what.
JP (CT)
@Jake So when her father spends three-plus years claiming that Hilary Clinton's use of a private email service is grounds for prosecution, and then violates those same rules, either they are both too dim to comprehend the rules and their consequences or they are outright criminals themselves. I'd love to hear what other possibilities you have to explain this.
deb (inoregon)
@Jake read the American constitution. It's some paper that has writing on it, signed by some guys a few years ago. People say it has some bearing on your life. How would that work? Excellent comment, though. Well thought out.

She is her father's daughter: arrogant, oblivious and stupid. What did you expect? Really.

Only solution Obviously, “Lock Her Up” The truth is she has zero business being a top aide to the President. Credentials zero, experience zero. “She didnt know the rules”. Apparently she never heard her father rant about Hilary’s private email server which ended in getting the Trump crowd to chant lock er up?!?

This made me laugh out loud, with equal measures of humor and disgust. The bone-deep hypocrisy of this family is unending.

In the interest of "balance" and "fairness" the Times so often seeks to achieve, this story should be treated similarly to the way the Clinton email saga was covered. Or is the Times afraid that doing so would fuel criticism of their left-leaning perspective? (hint: yes, they are...)
wildwest (Philadelphia)
No doubt, Trey Gowdy is extremely alarmed and wants to start holding hearings to get to the bottom of Ivanka's use of a private email account for government business right away. After years of hearing the GOP jump up and down and scream at the top of their lungs about Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server, isn't sauce for the goose also sauce for the gander? Ivanka didn't know you say? And her daddy (The President of the United States of America) behaves even more irresponsibly, using his personal cell phone to conduct governmental business? Because he doesn't know anything about governmental security protocols either and couldn't care less? Oh gee well I guess that's okay then. Looks like the GOP think no rules apply to them, or they can make them up as they go along. What rules govern Supreme Court nominations this week Mitch? Hypocrisy thy name is Republican.
Ken calvey (Huntington Beach ca)
Let's see the emails, how do we know what they really are, we are expected to believe Ivanka's version?
joelwh (Madison, WI)
Lock her up. You can't make this stuff up :/
Ms. Pea (Seattle)
Why is this person even involved in "government business"? Her role is the very epitome of nepotism. She has no business even being in the White House for any reason other than as a visitor.
JC (CA)
Oh boy. I cannot wait to tune into C-Span to watch the grilling. Can she handle 9 hours?
vmur (ny)
"when you're a star they let you do it." (plus I'm so beautiful that my own father wishes he could date me so he won't punish me for this).
Casual Observer (Los Angeles)
Well, the Republicans would never make an issue of this mishandling of official information because she is no Democrat. So it’s okay by them. They have no self respect anymore. I hope that if the Executive Branch fails to address this matter that the House will investigate. One time and briefly. Otherwise, give no more time to placing this family at the center of attention. The business of our government is to serve the people not to give these characters center stage, again.
AutumLeaff (Manhattan)
Hillary and Ivanka, same deed. When Democrats start chanting 'lock her up', will they also be asking to lock Hillary up? or just Ivanka because they do not like her? Tell you what, if Ivanka gets punished, locked up, or whatever it's done to her, the same should b done to Hillary. Otherwise what kind of 'justice' is it where one person gets punished, and one gets to write memoirs and have adoring crowds for the same action?
Gisele Dubson (Boulder)
Hillary was investigated. Let it be the same for Ivanka.
earthgve 21st (Portland,OR)
@AutumLeaff If equality is what you seek then she should be grilled for months and months on her use of a personal email in front of hateful politicians with screaming from you and the rest of trump's followers to lock her up at all of the trump's partisan political rallies. You can't act in a extremely hateful way to one woman for years and years for no reason and then expect the person who you like to get off for doing something you said is criminal and deserves to be jailed for. It wasn't sane people screaming red face to lock her up but republicans. Where is the justice in that?
Tom (Hudson Valley)
Ivanka Trump will get a "pass"... just as her father, and countless others in this administration continue to get a "pass." It's really up to Pelosi and Schumer to pursue this. The hypocrisy of how Ivanka will be treated in comparison to Hillary should be pursued. Democrats need to demonstrate they are not pushovers. Sadly, Pelosi and Schumer are not strong leaders and they will do nothing. And this will all be forgotten by Thanksgiving.
Don P (NH)
Let’s hope the House Democrats hold a hearing and subject Trump’s daughter to the same long, endless scrutiny that the House Republicans put Hillary thru.
Jomo (San Diego)
You might say that the comparison between Hillary's and Ivanka's email use is another case of false equivalence. After all, Hillary was smart enough to know better. Whereas Ivanka, Jared, et al are clueless and can't be expected to know how government works. That's who's running our country, folks!
KB (WA)
Feigned ignorance and the ability/willingness to lie are two required skills of the Trump family and WH administration. Quite sure we’ll be learning much, much more about this skill set in 2019.
H. Clark (Long Island, NY)
There will be absolutely no negative repercussions from this latest heinous revelation from the blondest member of the Trump Crime Family. They've gotten away with everything up until now, and they will go on marauding through the country wreaking havoc and committing felony after felony along the way. Get used to it, America; they will never be locked up. This is just another episode of "Your Tax Dollars at Play."
J Darby (Woodinville, WA)
I'll bet the incoming House Dems are firing up those subpoenas!
Maple23 (Toronto)
Part of her "apology tour" should be to read all online comments about her in any paper that allows them. What a disgrace given how her father capitalized on HC's email debacle that wasn't really a debacle after all.
RS (Alabama)
To paraphrase Leona Helmsley, "Only the little people worry about following the law."
Debbie (Atlanta)
This Trump family is putting national security at risk on a daily basis.
itsmildeyes (philadelphia)
Bingo.
Vietnam Veteran (NYC)
Trump and the Trump family is nothing less than a cancer on our once-great-nation. The midterms have (somewhat) slowed the growth of this cancer. If we want to eradicate this cancer, we All must VOTE in 2020 for the democratic candidate (whom ever that is). Please think of your children and grandchildren, do you want them to live in "Trump World"? I think not.
DCJ (Brookline)
I’ll let others comment on Ivanka Trump’s judgement using a private email server: what I want to know is if Ivanka & Jared are raising their children to emulate their Grandfather’s character and public behavior. Are Ivanka and Jared teaching their children to be selfish, vain, self-centered, boisterous, and deceitful? are they teaching their children to constantly lie, to be braggarts and bullies, to mock and humiliate others, for their boys to be distainful towards women? Are they teaching their children to be disrespectful to loyal friends, but flatter and please the mean and the powerful? Are these the character values you & Jared are teaching your young children, Ivanka? Are these the values that will Make America Great Again?
Alice In Wonderland (California)
Do you mean, What are their nannies teaching the Trump children? Who has time for children in Trump World.
ConcernedThoughtPrayer (California)
While funny in that "I'm not laughing" kind of way, this is a distraction. Ivanka and Jared are likely complicit in many other more meaningful transgressions of government ethics. Cambridge Analytica comes to mind.
Bob M (Whitestone, NY)
So... as this is obviously a Kushner family domain name, it should be obvious that Jared used his account as well. Did he know better, and not discuss the appropriate protocols with his wife? Or is his guilt yet to be disclosed?
Pajaritomt (New Mexico)
Lock her up! Lock her up! as soon as the new House of Representatives starts up!
Ron C (Mich)
Lock her up! Lock her up! Lock her up!
Ronald Sprague (Katy, TX)
What's that phrase many Trumpsters and MAGAheads are so fond of? Oh, yeah: "Lock her up!"
Jeoffrey (Arlington, MA)
It's okay if you're a Trump.
RNS (Piedmont Quebec Canada)
To change the subject from his daughter, look for the President to kill both turkeys today.
Joe Lynch (Seattle)
Lock her up!
Another Joe (Maine)
Wow! Page A13! How many times did H. Clinton's private emails make page A1? Of course, the other difference is that not even her worst enemies -- the "Lock her up!" crowd -- had any reason to suggest that Hillary was using her position for personal profit. Another Profile in Courage by the NYT.
Richard Weber (Placitas, NM)
Arrogance and stupidity are not felonies. Breach of security by a WH Advisor could be. The rules only seem to apply when they benefit Trump and Fille.
JH (New Haven, CT)
Lock her up .. Lock her up .. Lock her up!!!
Tony Costa (Bronx)
Well, what is good for the goose is good for the gander. LOCK HER UP !!!!
YFJ (Denver, CO)
Sure this reeks of hypocrisy, but who cares. Ivanka does nothing of value or consequence. The real crime is that she has a job at the White House in the first place.
Hi Pylori (S Florida)
Hoisted with your own petard, Mr President?
Kris (CT)
Well, Steve Bannon did say she is "dumb as a brick".
Veronica (Bellingham)

I am so gobsmacked I can't comment beyond this.
john dolan (long beach ca)
laws / norms / rules / ethics / honesty / goodwill toward others aren't applicable to the trumps, or their favorite financial enablers. the russians get a pass for hacking in our elections. saudi prince mbs orders an execution of a washington post correspondent, no push back from trump, or his son in law, as mbs pumps cash to their failing business concerns. rampant, unchecked violations of the emoluments clause. the gop controlled office of ethics and oversight does nothing. gop legislators are complicit in their silence and inertia. saddest of all, this was predictable. donald trump has been gleefully operating the same since daddy fred set him up.
sashakl (NYC)
In Trumplandia, laws, rules, norms of civility, manners, common knowledge, actual knowledge do not apply to Trumps or Trump people, just everyone else. As a royal, Ms. Trump is thus entitled to do as she likes. We, the subjects are expected to know this by now and submit to the Trump rules.
Ms. Pea (Seattle)
Other than the hypocrisy of this episode, it's sort of immaterial. Unless the government is currently involved in the manufacture of handbags, shoes and raincoats, what possible "government business" could Ivanka email anyone about? She is barely qualified to discuss the clothing business, let alone any other.
McGloin (Brooklyn)
@Ms. Pea Just because she doesn't know anything doesn't mean sure can't give orders.
Mark Siegel (Atlanta)
We Democrats should not give into self-righteousness on this. Like Hillary Clinton, Ivanka Trump made s mistake by using a personal email account for government business. Let’s not go crazy with hearings, investigations, lock her up, etc. Otherwise, we are no different than those who relentlessly bashed Clinton.
McGloin (Brooklyn)
@Mark Siegel Yes, really all Democrats have to do is every time a Republican brings up Hillary's emails, put your hand over you mouth, pretend to cough, and say Ivanka. There are far more serious crimes being committed by the Trump administration that need investigating. CoughIvanka. Somebody make that into a hash tag.
LM (Cleveland, Ohio)
Look, dad does it on his mobile. I'm sure Jared does it, as does Ivanka and the rest of the family. The whole thing is absurd. It's the "do as I say not as I do administration". Please just go, get this over with, for all of us.
Gipper (Ithaca, NY)
Is this the same situation as Secretary Clinton's? No, it's much more egregious. Making a large campaign issue out of something then turning around and doing something similar yourself ... lock her up.
Dennis D. McDonald (Alexandria, Virginia)
The entire Trump "family" is a national security risk. Does it matter whether it was done intentionally or done through ignorance? Do our enemies. listening in, care about such justifications? More importantly, why do Republicans still support such incompetence?
John M (Ohio)
Is something going to be done about this? She should not be working at the White House to begin with, how many laws are being violated here? Republicans are allowing the Trumps to take advantage....and we are the ones paying for it
Great Lakes State (Michigan)
In a word, Ivanka is a faithful lawbreaker, and she digs the high. But, as time passes, the grains in her toxic hourglass of life will run out, and the long arm of the law will grab her, just as they have grabbed Manafort, and many others. The assaults against our democracy by this family against we the people are over, we are fighting back and we will be successful.
Never Ever Again (Michigan)
I am sure Adam Schiff and the Democratic House will be glad to look into this. Ivanka has full knowledge of the law on this. After all, her father spent an entire campaign searingly criticizing Hillary for just this, along with teaching his followers to chant "Lock her up."
DS (Georgia)
Where’s the outrage? Where are the cries to “lock her up!?” Could it be that Republicans really don’t care about government emails after all?
Steve (Seattle)
Ivanka using personal email accounts for government business Donald using his personal cell phone for government business, lock them all up.
Will Schmidt perlboy (on a ranch 6 miles from Ola, AR)
When they chant "lock her up" at Trump rallies, will they be talking about Ivanka or Hillary? What will Trump say when he hears that chant? Will he ask the Russians to find Ivanka's missing emails? Will there be an FBI investigation of Ivanka, as there was of Hillary? This story has, or should have legs. The late night comedians are going to have a field day with this one.
Rmayer (Cincinnati)
@Will Schmidt perlboy How about something more medieval, in tune with the era most appropriate for Trumpism. "Cast her OUT!". Or maybe, more to present day, "You're FIRED!".
cheryl (yorktown)
Daddy has the perfect solution: lock her up! The family has gotten away with carrying on private business while ostensibly representing OUR government in multiple situations. And while not being made answerable to Congress. She - they - have access to the most seasoned advisors, absolutely no possible excuse ( Maybe, If Hillary did it, it's OK?). Totally unacceptable. Business as usual in the Trump sewer.
Madeline Conant (Midwest)
What we know is that Republicans love to persecute Democrats endlessly over things they honestly don't care anything about. Like budget deficits, or email servers. And the stupid American public will never stop falling for their tactics.
McGloin (Brooklyn)
@Madeline Conant The stupid Democratic Party never stops letting Republicans run their party. "Gee we can never offer workers what they need, because Republicans will call us socialists! Instead we'll help them impose supply side economics and let then blame us for the ensuing disasters." Guess what?' If Democrats deregulated investment banks, created global "free trade," unresponsive to workers or the environment, increased fracking, helped North Dakota attack indigenous water protectors, helped cities attack Occupy Wall Street, passed a Heritage Foundation Healthcare plan, voted to invade Iraq, voted for Bush Tax cuts, ended welfare as we know it, legalized derivatives, gave life sentences to people convicted of three crimes, helping to disenfranchise their own base, etc. Republicans would still call Democrats socialists. I know this because Democrats did all of these things and as far as Republicans are concerned you are all still allies of Stalin. Republicans even call John McCain a socialist. They are always going to call you socialists, because Republicans don't judge actions, they just call people names. Hint: when Republicans keep attacking Pelosi, but not Schumer, it's time to get rid of Schumer, not Pelosi.
rdscally (Calif)
GEE NYT! Below the fold with this. I think this deserves at least as much coverage as NYT gave to HC's emails. Especially considering she just ONE of at least 6 WH officials who did the same. And oh yeah, there is a server. You might want to refer to the Betsy deVoss file.
Wally Wolf (Texas)
O, the perils of running the family business out of the White House!
sashakl (NYC)
@Wally Wolf Who knew?
Studioroom (Washington DC Area)
I don't know why this wasn't already discussed with Clinton's or anyone else use of private email ... As someone who has had a federal email address, I can assure everyone of one thing - federal email is a giant pain in the butt. Not only is there a password, there are security questions, PLUS a card you insert into a government issued machine, usually running on a very slow network. It's painful. Also, federal investigators are allowed by law to review any email sent to and from their network. With restrictions. There's no excuse for Ivanka. She has plenty of support to help her setup accounts and maintain her emails. Unlike thousands of other Federal employees. Piece of advice, if you really want to keep something private, don't put it in an email. I think email is the new flu.
Mickela (New York)
@Studioroom it is done that way for security purposes. The same with banks and places that require high security.
Norm (NYC)
Lock her up......
Rocky (Denver)
..,. At Nordstrom’s.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@Rocky They don't want her, in fact they discontinued carrying her line.
Ben Testa (Kings Park, NY)
What if liberals now chanted "Lock Her Up!" Disgusting, right? Why wasn't it considered disgusting when it was used against Hillary Clinton? Talk about deplorable behavior, this WH and anyone who has any authority to make decisions for all of us needs to go somewhere else than the People's House. Just saying.
Dave....Just Dave (Somewhere in Florida)
Bear in mind, that for all of her faults, weaknesses and shortcomings, nobody can accuse HRC of having no class; unlike Trump, whose boorishness ranks right up there with his racism, misogyny, xenophobia, andthe fact he's also a sociopath.
Joe Sabin (Florida)
Dear NY Times, please be sure this stays on the front page of your paper for month and months like you did about Hillary Clinton's emails. Thank you, and American patriot.
Brucski (Ohio)
Unfettered arrogance. The swamp has refilled awfully quickly. Let the apologists begin to deflect their “lock her up” chant.
Irene (Brooklyn, NY)
Oh, does that mean we need to "lock her up" too?
Rea Tarr (Malone, NY)
"Ms. Trump had told people ...she was unaware of the rules...." "Ignorancia legis neminem excusat," of course.
Eero (East End)
Just waiting for Republicans and Trumpistas to shout "LOCK HER UP!" No?
Laurence Bachmann (New York)
Where's the "Lock Her Up Crowd" when you need them?
FAV (Los Angeles, CA)
Maybe Russia can help sort out the fiasco. I hear they have experts.
Anthonyb (Miami)
I'm sure Ivanka will do as well in her hours-long interrogation by the house committee as Hillary did in hers. Surely. I for one am looking forward to it.
Elvio (Yonkers)
“Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal account.” They just don’t care, do you?
srwdm (Boston)
Just don’t ask Ivanka if she “wiped the server“ [with a cloth?] or instructed her ethics attorney to do so.
Alex (AR)
The hypocrisy is as rank as it is obvious. Yet somehow I doubt that Donald will stop the chants of "lock her up" at his pathetic rallys. I do, however, wonder if any of his allies in Congress, the few who are more intelligent, will cool their fervor for investigation of Hillary after noting these blatant parallels.
Chet (Sanibel fl)
This raises the broader question of whether the Dems will use their new found power to mimic Trump and the Republicans by attempting to turn a mole hilll — in this case Ivanka’s stupidity, hypocracy, and arrogance — into a crimminal case. We should all get a good laugh but let’s get back to some normalcy. It is fine to assess whether any real confidential material was placed at risk. But let’s not go down the Trump/Gowdey rabbit hole by treating this as a serious crime. There are lots of important areas for the Dems to exercise their power but, although tempting, this is not one of them. I am not suggesting it be ignored — but let’s not let Trump define what is important and what is not.
John (Baldwin, NY)
@Chet I say investigate Ivanka. Let her sweat.
Joanne K (Indiana)
Emails? Short item on a long list of destructive Trumpian acts. How did this gang take over our country? Vulgar nepotism, chronic lying, obvious violations of emoluments clause,,,,,,,, Just her and Jared's presence in the "White House" is abberant, never mind that Trump positions them as "advisors". This is what ruling dictators and crime families do. And the so-called "Republican" party, the party of 'purity and virtue" in their supporting, complicit role.....The Democratic house needs to stop crimes done in our name using taxpayer money. That is not revenge; it is executing their elected duty to the Constitution and our country.
roger (white plains)
Would it be so petty to suggest that we "Lock her up!" Selfishly, I would love to see Trump's face as an unruly crowd of liberals chanted for his daughter's imprisonment. Just a thought!
Jpat (Washington, D.C.)
When asked by a reporter on her proposed role in the Trump administration, Ivanka’s response was: “I am just going to be a daughter”. Well there she is being her father’s daughter. The law that governs this family is different than the ones that govern mere mortals like Hillary Clinton! I am looking for Trey Gowdy - where is he?
Susanna (South Carolina)
@Jpat He's getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving back here in his district. Mr. Gowdy won't have much time to investigate Ivanka, though, as he didn't run for re-election. (Not that we'll like his replacement, much, either. This is solid R-land.)
Mags (Connecticut)
Maybe Ivanka and HRC can share a cell?
GUANNA (New England)
The repeat the babble of our president "Lock her up" Lock her up" now all in unison "Lock her up"
carlo1 (Wichita, KS)
@GUANNA In my mind, it forever changed the meaning of "Lock her up". Now, whenever I hear it, I will be thinking of Ms. Ivanka and not HRC as trump so dearly loved to recite to incite.
JM (San Francisco, CA)
Ivanka, Ivanka, Ivanka! So I guess you did not hear the tens of thousands of enraged Trumpeteers chanted, "Lock her up!" at the hundreds of Trump rallies. Actually they still do. So Trey Gowdy can advise you about how miserable your life will be for the next 2 years being investigated and testifying before Congress, just like Hillary did.
Innocent Bystander (US and the World)
This is not a big deal, or is at least explicable. And it was not a big deal for Hilary either. So it is disappointing to see the NY Times not treat these stores in the same fashion. Very disappointing. I think it would be fair for the NYTimes to address this non-story under a piece comparing their respective treatment of Ivanka's emails vs. Hilary's. In this way perhaps some good would come of such stupidity.
socal60 (california)
Considering how you "But her emails" non-stop above the fold during the election cycle ---- can you please stop burying this story down the page and put it up top? Oh, and "Lock Her Up" per daddy dearest.
Chris I (Valley Stream)
Maybe it's time to lock all of them up!!!! How about an FBI investigation?
Bill (Port Washington, NY)
Hillary Clinton has set the standards for personal email use that someone else would have to go far beyond before it's considered to be a criminal act.
meo (nyc)

magicisnotreal (earth)
So did she have a private server or not? Somehow I think people are making hay of "private server" not understanding that it is actually more secure than using an ISP email which I suspect is what ijkfamily.com is. I just found this from Oct 2017 searching that domain name; https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/10/jared-kushners-private-e-mail-account-now-hosted-at-trump-organization/ What is that chanting sound I here ??? lock her up?
David Langan (Ridgewood, NJ)
But her emails!
H. Clark (Long Island, NY)
HA! HA! HA! — a thousand times over. Looks like the criminal apple doesn't fall far from the felonious tree. Forget 'Lock her up;' her citizenship should be revoked, along with her fraudulent father, milquetoast husband and underworld siblings. The Trump Crime Family saga gets more sordid by the nanosecond.
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
Trump's Republican party is so blatantly absurd at this point that it has become a re-make of a Little Britain skit featuring Vicki Pollard... "... Yeh, but -- ... no, but -- ... yeh, but --- ... no but yeh but no but anyway, but no ...."
RGY (NJ)
There is NO way Ivanka can claim ignorance with Mnuchin, Ross, Miller, Priebus, Bannon, Kushner, Cohn, KellyAnne, Marc Short, Dina Powell, Daniel Kowalski, Hope Hicks, Newt Gingrich, Sean Hannity, Don McGahn, Sean Spicer, are all receiving her PRIVATE emails in 2017 and no one had a clue it was illegal. I'm still wondering why Sean Hannity was on her email along with WH officials. Top officials from each of these were emailed through her private email account: EOP/Executive office of the President OMB/Office of Management and Budget CEA/Council of Economic Advisors WHO/World Health Organization OVP/Office of the Vice President DOT/Department of Treasury CEA/Council of Economic Advisors NEC/National Economic Council DPC/ Domestic Policy Council DOC/Department of Corrections NSC/ National Security Council Jared Kushner https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4165150-Ivanka-Emails-From-Treasury.html#document/p35/a385986

Why is on page A13, and not page A1? Your paper skewered Hillary with 'fodder' about her emails with several front-page rehashes. I respectfully demand a reasonable explanation for this from your editors as a loyal subscriber. You owe the country one, too.

catalina (NYC)
The arrogance of this family is only matched by the idiocy.
John Adams (CA)
This is minor compared to Trump using an unsecured cellphone daily, even though he’s aware that foreign agents are listening. I suppose that any questions about any of the Trumps not observing security protocols will be off limits, lacking the standards of “decorum” dictated by the Trump White House.
srwdm (Boston)
Instead of the endless bickering that will now go on about use of personal email accounts— The real focus should be on Ivanka Trump’s and Jared Kushner‘s complete lack of credentials and experience for the jobs they have in the White House. [And unfortunately the same can be said for the individual currently occupying the oval office.]
FV (NYC)
It just proves to everyone that certain people believe they are above the law. Unfortunately for us it seems that they are.
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
In addition to the staggering carelessness of these nouveau-riche elitists known as the Trump family, Donald Trump finds it too inconvenient to have his cell phone's cell phone inspected and replaced by national security and is vulnerable to hacking. Not that it would make any difference, since he also has openly admitted to giving Russians classified information. Remember the FIRST private meeting he had, in the oval office, with Russians, in 2017? When has anyone in the Trump family EVER respected our laws.
Me (MA)
Poor Donald Trump. Now that he has own hand picked acting Attorney General and is threatening to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails, this story comes out. Also, another investigation into the Clinton Foundation seems unlikely since the "Trump Foundation" is legitimately being investigated as just another money making scam for the Trump family. Happy Thanksgiving to our first family. I hope they will reap what they have sown.
Tom Q (Minneapolis, MN)
Yes, but..... We should all reread Orwell's "Animal Farm." Of course we are all equal in this country. But... some are more equal than others. When the Democrats were accused of sending personal e-mails, the GOP had more investigations than can be counted. When one of their own does the same, well....let's talk about raking to prevent forest fires.
Heidi (Upstate, NY)
Guess it will be more difficult for the GOP to try to investigate and punish Hillary Clinton for her emails. On second thought, no I wouldn't put it past them, they seem to think all Trumps are above the law.
Penn Towers (Wausau)
This is a perfect opportunity to step back and be reasonable instead of perpetuating a circle of recriminations which I am tired of. The Dems should be clear this is unacceptable and offer standards going forward. I know these standards exist, but the moment is about setting tone for the future.
Justin Sayin (London)
It will be interesting to see if there are demands for hearing after hearing focused on Ivanka as there were on HRC.
njglea (Seattle)
Republicans don't care. The whole e-mail and Benghazi supposed "scandals" were trumped up tools to try to destroy Ms. Hillary Rodham Clinton. Perhaps Lindsay Graham will open an investigation into Ivanka instead of reopening the one into Ms. Rodham-Clinton. Pardon me. Whatever am I thinking?
hen3ry (Westchester, NY)
In other words Ivanka Trump can do it because she's not Hilary Clinton and she doesn't have Bill Clinton as a husband. And she wasn't one of the most qualified candidates to run for president in decades. Isn't she serving in the White House in an official capacity to her father the president? Aren't there rules she's supposed to obey? Where's the screaming and catcalling from the GOP about this egregious violation? Oh, that's right, she's not Hilary.
Gregg (Three Lower Counties of Pennsylvania)
Lock her up! JK
Alexander Bumgardner (Charlotte, NC)
Perhaps her lawyer is right in that she didn't set up a "private server in her basement." Yet she has a private domain, and there is certainly a server somewhere. I'm no cyber security expert, but the goings and comings of the President's daughter, who engages in both family business and white house business, absolutely is of interest to our enemies. As would be any information even tangentially related to government secrets. "But her emails!"
Peter Henry (Suburban New York)
@Alexander Bumgardner Nope, not in her basement, but whois has it registered at godaddy and hosted on a server at DOMAINCONTROL.COM.
GECAUS (NY)
@Alexander Bumgardner Ivanka Trump is either lying that she did not know the rules, is very ignorant or not a smart as people giver her credit for. She clearly could NOT be that stupid or forgetful that she can not recall the big deal her father made out about Hillary Clinton's debacle about her emails and her server. It truly seems "what goes around comes around".
brian (detroit)
if the GOP had any sense of fairness they would force Ivanka out - but it's easier to get their mobs to chant LOCK HER UP about Hillary's emails.... and Hillary has no position in government
TOM (FISH CREEK, WI)
The Dems would be wise to avoid this complete waste of time.
John lebaron (ma)
It's not only Ivanka. It is her "presidential" Dad too, if you count conducting government business on his open, private mobile phone, and leaving it turned on in his golf cart. If you want know what the president is doing, all you have to do is to listen to what he accuses others of doing. That's what he is doing in spades far more malevolent than anything that Hillary Clinton would dream up in her worst nightmares. Lock them up!
susan (nyc)
Ivanka claimed she didn't know she was doing something wrong. Did Ivanka just come out of a coma?
Alfie (San Francisco)
Are Trump supporters going to start chanting “Lock her up”?
rosa (ca)
Even with my cursory knowledge of emails and private servers, I can still come up with 2 within this administration who have used "private servers". One, is Pence, His was hacked before he was elected. But he sure does love it when the rally-mobs chant, "Lock her up!" And, now, Ivanka. What DOES she do, anyway? Does she have a real job? Do we actually PAY her? This is just number umpteen-bazillion example of the utter brain-dead life of this woman. And her fam. And the White House Staff. And, we can even throw in the Republicans who allow this stain to continue. This country will NEVER recover from this administration. Sure..... beat the rush: lock her up......
David Chen (Bethesda)
So, is the NY Times could to be running stories about Ivanka's email on A1 above the fold, day after day until the next election? I don't think so. Maybe, then, they ought to do some self-reflection about their non-stop email-hammering stories in 2016.
Thomas Murray (NYC)
I have high confidence that Hillary Clinton's 'un-prescribed' e-mail-account usage 'did us' no harm, and was 'untouched' by 'bad intentions'; but it is notable that … of the two ... only Ivana Marie ("Ivanka," informally) -- the first 'GOOP'-certified White House adviser of Who knows? and Whatever -- has the spoiled-airhead defense for such mistakes available to her.
Steven (Long Beach)
Not surprised at all... My only question... Can Daddy Pardon Her?
AJ (Trump Towers Basement)
Just call Trump on his unsecure cell phone to check on what Ivanka was up to in using her personal email to conduct official business at the White House. Then check in with Hillary to get a heads up on what to expect from rabid Republicans. Oh wait. Maybe not.
ted (Brooklyn)
Indict the whole crime family. Oh impeach them first.
WmC (Lowertown, MN)
Yohoo, Ivanka, when your father was leading chants of "Lock her up" in front of mobs of deplorables for over a year, what illegal activity, exactly, do you think he was accusing his opponent of doing?
Heartbroken (New York)
Where is the chant "LOCK HER UP",now! Double standards is the logo of this administration. Hopeful that come Jan 2019,the Clan inhabiting the sacred WH will get their comeuppance!!!
Blacktongue3 (Florida)
The picture and the caption beneath it that accompanies this article say it all: the vacant stare, the profession of complete ignorance. It's in the DNA. Trump's so-called "Base" could care less: bashing the Clintons is always more fun and always in season. Hypocrisy? Oh, pshaw. Where have you gone, Trey Gowdy? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo woo woo.
Chris Ryan (Beverly, MA)
Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the thousands of emails she....oh, I forgot, you screen all the emails from your operatives anyway. Never mind.
say what (NY,NY)
Ivanka declared herself "first daughter" and feels entitled to ignore pesky rules that get in her way. Tillerson was right, and daddy isn't the only moron in the WH. Lock 'em all up.
JP (CT)
"Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal email account." Wow. Either she's lying or she truly was completely in-a-cave ignorant of the issue her father made for two years and going. Lying? Buh bye. That ignorant? Buh bye.
Majortrout (Montreal)
Hillary used private e-mail server account. Hillary used private e-mail server account. Hillary used private e-mail server account. Hillary used private e-mail server account. Trump said that 10,000 times during the 2016 election. "Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal email account." Ms. Trump is either totally ignorant, uninformed, stupid, or all three!
magicisnotreal (earth)
@Majortrout Or #4 an inveterate liar who knew exactly what she was doing and did/does not care.
Kat (San Diego)
@Majortrout All three....
Rocky (Denver)
And how much are the adult children costing the American taxpayers?
Politico (Texas)
The excuse the White House is giving is that Ivanka is not qualified to be in government. Well, at least their honest for once.
william phillips (louisville)
The Times readers already know that the Trumps are plutocrats but how do you get their base to learn the same story, see it as a thread that leads to bigger truths, and to FEEL betrayal of their tribal leader?
Stargazer (There)
@william phillips Good question. The. Washington Post published an article a few days ago analyzing where Dems did best in this election: Areas with higher education and income levels and in areas more directly connected to globalization, not to manufacturing jobs, etc. While the piece argued that Dems need to find ways to connect to these folks, it feels impossible. World views are so divergent.
william phillips (louisville)
@Stargazer We spend a lot of time being appalled. It’s a process that still consumes ourselves. Slowly, we are getting to the solution phase. Frankly, though, I think that we could be making a better advancement. The therapy discipline of psychology has much to offer. Better Angels organization is doing it in the form of marital therapy between blue and red tribal members. My ultimate role model are characters from Star Trek. Deanna Troi functions as a counselor. She knows how to listen in a way that leads to solutions. A major resource is Data. He functions as a foundation of facts much like an historian. What a team! Time to shift as to how we deal with conflict, whether it be on the street or on cable news. Media journalists and producers have to make a transition away from speaking to their base or entertaining with pitting one spin against another spin.
Hollywood (Wisconsin)
"Lock her up!" Wiki leaks publish those emails. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Sue (St. Petersburg)
Do as I say, not as I do.
Ricky (Texas)
so lets see, what are those three famous words that trump has coined for Hilary over the past 2-3 years on the campaign trail at his rallies, that now very much apply to his own daughter, Lock Her Up!! yea dude what goes around does eventually come back around. trump has just about come full circle on his being critical of past office holders on playing golf and the use of Executive Orders, to which both he himself has abused.
Margo Channing (NYC)
Where is the fury from the right most especially McConnell? Silent as usual unless your name is Hillary.
DR_GRANNY (Colorado )
Ivanka has no business doing "government business." What did she and Jared have going on with Saudi Arabia? Lock her up!
Paula (East Lansing, MI)
Oh snap--reports from early in the administration were that Ivanka and Jared were debating which of them would get to run for president later. Guess this will scuttle Ivanka's case to get to run before Jared does. 'Course Don Jr. might have his own plans.
Katrina (Maryland)
This should be the main headline every single day for months, above the fold. How many emails were sent, found, etc. speculation on whether they contained classified info, investigations. This should be made into a MAJOR issue about the competence and trustworthiness of the administration. They should be questioned about the emails nonstop. It’s what was done to Hillary. NYT included!
Debra (Chicago)
Hillary Clinton had security consultants to make her server secure. As far as we know, it was never hacked, while the State Dept. was hacked and its emails circulated to embarrassing effect. Ivanka Trump knows that phones are hacked all the time. How could she not be aware of the big scandal in Britain over the hacked phones? The fact is that all the newspapers, especially the Times, reported every negative comment made about Hillary Clinton's emails, and Trump and the Republicans pounded away on what a big security breach, and how it could have gotten someone killed, and how an ordinary State Dept. would have been fired. And people decided not to vote for her because they considered that rhetoric ... they considered her irresponsible. And now we all shrug and say no big deal?! I guess this is because we consider that Donald and Ivanka Trump do not know anything worth exposing? That they are too irresponsible and self-involved to know anything about the govt? It suggests they are running their businesses, and not the govt, despite the daily high profile incendiary and ignorant comments.
JM (San Francisco, CA)
@Debra Ivanka to the American people: I'm Ivanka Trump, I'm above the law. America to Ivanka Trump: Lock her up.
Vic (California)
@Debra Claimed ignorance of the law is no excuse; especially by the trumps.
Madeleine215 (Bronx, NY)
@Debra I came here expecting to see a banner like headline about this just like the one that ran in late October re the FBI reopening it's investigation of Mrs. Clinton. Instead I had to scroll down to find the article. After that I didn't bother reading it because it was going to make me dizzy reading all the spin. This is a bigger deal and yet it's being minimized.
Pete in SA (San Antonio, TX)
Somehow, I suspect most American citizens (e.g. voters) understand the somewhat "huuuuge" dfference between a paid government official such as a Secretary of State and a non-elected, non-government spouse even if she is the "FLOTUS" persona.
Ferniez (California)
Well of course, but this is Ivanka Trump! Doesn't everyone understand that there are two standards, one for the Trump family who can do no wrong and the rest of the poor unfortunate world that was not born a Trump. Now on to beating up on Hillary so the base can cheer.
Bart DePalma (Woodland Park, CO)
False equivalence. Using a private email account to conduct government business is not a crime. Storing classified materials in your and your IT company's unsecured email servers and providing it to uncleared persons at the IT company and your attorney's office are crimes, as is committing perjury before Congress and obstructing justice by attempting to destroy the email evidence.
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
@Bart DePalma Why do you think Ivanka's emails won't be deemed classified either now or retroactively. Did she show you all of them?
John Brews ..✅✅ (Reno NV)
Where is the GOP rant about Ivanka? Just one more indication the GOP is interested only in what billionaires tell them is important, not the Country’s security nor prosperity. And unfortunately the billionaires running the GOP are a dubious lot.
ehillesum (michigan)
Ivanka no doubt correctly concluded that if a former Secretary of State/Presidential candidate could, as a matter of convenience, share classified information in her private emails (kept on a server hidden in her closet to protect her political interests) and suffer no legal consequence, then Ivanka was simply following her lead. The only difference is that her last name is Trump and the left has an intense hatred for anything Trump.
Geoff (New York)
This makes sense, but only if you’re not one of the people who has been crying “lock her up” for the past three years.
Rea Tarr (Malone, NY)
@ehillesum But you haven't said whether or not Trump should start bellowing, "Lock her up!" whenever Ivanka pops up somewhere.
Greg Lesoine (Moab, UT)
Will Republican hypocrisy never end? Where oh where are all the chants of "Lock her up" from the right? Hmmm? Nope, not a single one. The House should do its duty and pursue justice. The Trump family is not above the law, not in the least.
rich (hutchinson isl. fl)
Will they now be screaming "lock her up" at Trump rallies? The supposed crime is the same, will the reaction be? Not a chance. A cult is immune to logic or it could not exist.
Jensetta (NY)
She violated a law, and it was one she certainly would have know it was a law after her father screeched 'lock her up' throughout his campaign and into his presidency. No need for the kind of 'show trails' the republicans spent tens of millions on, but it cannot be just shrugged off in the way the Trump family's other crimes are.
Richard Huber (New York)
I agree with the observation that in reality Ms Kushner's use of a commercial email posed little security risk to the nation. However it does demonstrate the extreme hypocrisy of the Trump clan, their never ending drive to benefit from his accidental occupancy of the While House & the brazen disregard for common ethical behavior.
Doctor B (White Plains, NY)
For the first time in history, a member of the Trump administration acts in defiance of the law. In Trump's world, laws are only enforced if they are violated by Democrats, but Republicans always get a free pass. Special consideration is given to actions by anyone named Clinton, who must be subject to an even higher standard. Every time one thinks that Trump's hypocrisy can't get any worse, we see more of it on display. Will we hear Trump's lackeys screaming "Lock her up?" Only if they have any integrity, so don't hold your breath waiting.
Mike (Western MA)
Makes me sick. Thanks for excellent reporting. Happy Thanksgiving!
Bob (Boston, MA)
I hope this gets handled the adult way. The only important thing here is that if Ivanka uses her personal email for government business, no matter how slight, then she almost certainly uses her government email for personal business, or, more to the point, for her business dealings. If that is the case, then that is almost certainly a serious violation of the emoluments clause and needs serious investigation. Short of that, yes, this is a laughable example of hypocrisy, especially when combined with Trump's own, repeated, ill-advised use of a personal phone. But in the scheme of things, this is a "big nothing burger", as the fringe-right talking-heads like to say. This isn't worth anyone's time, beyond yet one more combination eye-roll and grimace. The Democrats needs to show that they are the party of adults here and give this silliness a pass (after checking her government email use for more serious impropriety).
Stargazer (There)
@Bob Dems need to do their job of Congressional oversight, wherever it may lead them. Of course they should do so responsibly.
GUANNA (New England)
@Bob Silliness gave up Trump, maybe silliness will get rid of the disease.
RLW (Chicago)
@Bob Hypocrisy is the modus operandi of the Trump Administration. There is no adult way so long as Donald J. Trump, the narcissistic adolescent in charge of the executive branch of our government, is removed from office.
Fred P (Charleston)
The inspector general should be requested to open an investigation to determine if the email accounts of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were used to provide back channel communications related to US policy and presidential political agendas. Presumption of innocence is an inappropriate standard that should be a material transgression by an US presidential administration. This needs a serious look as the assertion that Ivanka did not know is absurd. So, what is being hidden here? It is beyond imagination and the respect for law of this administration. We need to know.
GECAUS (NY)
@Fred P Ivanka Trump, like her father may be lying to us. Having said that, on the other hand if Ivanak Trump, once she accepted the position she is in now, was NOT informed of the "do's and dont's" while in that position whose fault is that? Her father's or his advisers? Ivanka is either lying, ignorant or not as smart as people giver her credit.
McGloin (Brooklyn)
@Fred P Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial! Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial!
TRKapner (Virginia)
From a national security standpoint, the White House is correct, this is no big deal. Nor was it when Hillary Clinton did so, and they know it. However, they also knew how to make political hay over it and that's the concern on Pennsylvania Ave this morning.
Great Lakes State (Michigan)
@TRKapner Where is the evidence that it's not a national security risk?
JM (San Francisco, CA)
@TRKapner Yep, and thanks to the Republicans, Dems have a detailed road map for how to deal with Ivanka's blatant breach of security. While Ivanka is being grilled by Congress, perhaps she should explain her "special arrangement" with Chinese President, Xi Jinping, who keeps approving her many (over 20) trademark requests despite her daddy's nasty trade war with China. Especially her recent "VOTING MACHINE" trademark request which was approved. Yikes Ivanka just proved she can't even be trusted to secure her emails, but we're going to let her manufacture Trump "voting machines"? Good God!
JM (San Francisco, CA)
@TRKapner Along with Kushner's attempt to set up back channels at the Russian embassy, this is a huge deal. We already see evidence of some special arrangements between Ivanka and China Xi Jinping who DESPITE a giant trade war between our countries, the President of China still grants Ivanka every trademark she applies for. And WHY in the world does she need a "voting machine" trademark??? Ivanka can't even be trusted with emails and we're letting her manufacture voting machines? That's one way to "secure" a republican victory.
Rita (California)
It is doubtful that Ivanka put the US at risk by using her private email for government business. The story here is not that Ivanka put the US at risk because she used her private email. National security is not the story. Nor was it the story with Hillary. No, the story here is the astounding and infuriating hypocrisy of the Trumps, the Trump supporters and the news media. I guess Home Boy Trump gets the benefit of the home press advantage from The NY Times. Fair and balanced?
BrickHouse (Valdosta)
If Democrats become the party of revenge and the headlines are about investigations they'll lose their grasp of the House. Inevitably they'll overplay their hand. A much better strategy is to pass bills, control the national conversation and turn the Republicans into the party of "NO". Americans are starving for someone in Washington to do the people's work.
Sara G. (New York)
@BrickHouse: revenge? How about parity and a level playing field! Republicans have been playing a dirty, foul game for decades and Dems mostly roll over, move on or come together for the sake of the country. I think many feel that it's time they and their Crime Syndicate Family be held accountable.
Ralphie (Seattle)
"Ivanka? Well, she's been around a long time but I don't really know her. Other people say she's a very good person but who knows? We'll see."
Butterfly (NYC)
@Ralphie She, like the rest of the Trumps, is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.
Rick Pearson (Austin Texas)
What a tempest in a teapot. The Democratic House should take a quick look and if it's no more a problem than it appears, file it under "another folly of the inept" and move on.
Lawrence (Ridgefield)
If the Democrats hold committee hearings about this, it will be to force the opposition to publicly admit their hypocrisy and close the argument against HRC.
Jensetta (NY)
@Rick Pearson She knowingly violated the law. Guess that qualify as 'folly' these days, right?
DS (Montreal)
@Rick Pearson No absolutely not -- Hillary's use of a private server was a major campaign point for Trump and he still leads the chant to "lock her up".Why should the same issue be overlooked for Ivanka Trump a SENIOR WH advisor? Apply the rules equally or not at all.
Ilene Starger (Brooklyn, NY)
It is beyond dispiriting that Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who have scant governmental/policy qualifications, are part of this damage-inducing administration. This president lost the popular vote by three million votes; for the majority of us in this country, his actions and behavior are unfathomable. The injustice and ignorance are compounded by the fact that he surrounds himself with unqualified family members and colleagues who seem to believe they are above ethics rules, the Constitution, and perhaps the law. One gets a knot in the pit of one's stomach while reading news articles about the Trump relatives/inner circle and the damage they are doing to domestic and world policies. We did not elect this family. We need brilliant minds, true public servants, and ethical ones at that, to govern our entire country, not just a segment of it, and restore our position of principled leadership and respect on the world stage.
Great Lakes State (Michigan)
@Ilene Starger. Send that message to Mitch McConnell firstly. And to Paul Ryan, and Mr. Whitaker.
Carla Warner (Richmond)
@Ilene Starger Standing ovation Ilene, thank you for your comment.
Mark Hugh Miller (San Francisco, California)
@Ilene Starger. Brava! The absurdity of the Trump family playing president, First Lady, and diplomatic envoy -- and not having a clue how it's properly done -- is a national farce, and tragedy as well.
Jethro Pen (New Jersey)
Outrageous! The next thing out of these PT haters mouths will be a chant of "lock her up" for a minimal and totally inadvertent and honest mistake by this good and talented woman who is completely devoted to aiding her father's patriotic, heroic undertaking to lifting this country by his own bootstraps out of the morass created by F P Obama and the Democrats who would be content to let diseased and criminal immigrants without number invade the country and, ultimately, displace real Americans and transform the real America into something unrecognizable. Shut them up. And out. Disgraceful. Give this stalwart woman who has given and continues to give almost all of herself to aid her father in pulling America back from its hurtling to the brink, a break!
Paulette (Trenton,NJ)
Trump pulling America back from the brink? I don't think so. If anyone will get us to fall over the brink it will be Trump. Strange how when your party does what the other party was accused of doing, she should be given a break. Why? Lock her up!
Tim (Peoria)
@Jethro Pen Hilarious. Thanks for the laugh to start my day.
Bob (Boston, MA)
@Jethro Pen Unbelievably, in today's world, I actually cannot tell if your post was purposeful, comical, hyperbolic sarcasm or the absurd, true feelings of an Always Trumper. What have we come to?
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
Oh my ! Don't lock her up ! Poor feckless, inept, ridiculous Ivanka. Leave Daddy's little princess alone ! She is having soooo much fun posing and selecting designer outfits for her fashion shoots in the Oval Office, and far flung locations all over the world (on tax dime) where she can pretend to be a seasoned diplomat. How fun is that ! She even got to sit at the table next to Merkel a while back. A world leader ! Presto chango .That was easy. Soo totally cool. Like, who even needs an advanced degree in international relations or geo-politics anyway when your dad can just give you a super gigantic role in govt., and the tax payers can bank roll your junior varsity apprenticeship on the global stage ? (who pays taxes anyway? Not Jared ! He is sooooo smart. He made $ 364 MILL just last year ! without ever really doing anything ! Govt is soooo cool) And then theres the 18 trademarks I just got from that guy in China ! he must really like me, or my sweat shops. Yay! Cha ching ching !!! Whee ! What a blast.]
Shim (Midwest)
In Fast and Fury, Bannon was quoted that "Ivanka is dumb as a brick". What was the 2016 election about? Hillary's use of private email?
JCAZ (Arizona)
To quote Mrs. Kushner’s father.... “ Look at the mess she’s in with these emails.” “ And that will last for years! Do you think that’s going away?” “ .... Is likely to be under investigation for years” From his mouth to God’s ears.
EGD (California)
Oh, and please let us know if and when Ivanka uses Bleach Bit to wipe a server clean.
Steve S (Pittsburgh)
Well isn’t that special? Has she been living in a cave for the last three years? To have a member of the Trump family using a personal email account is beyond stupid, it is arrogant... oh wait... she is her father’s daughter. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
C (.)
But it’s Hillary who has to be locked up. (Eye roll).
EGD (California)
Sure, let’s look at Ivanka. However, for those in the false equivalency crowd, let us know if and when Ivanka did what Hillary Clinton did: — used a personal account to avoid disclosure — set up an server at home — knowingly transmitted classified / special access information — when challenged, lied about and changed her story numerous times — deleted tens of thousands of emails under subpoena. (You know, the ones about yoga and wedding plans)
Observor (Backwoods California)
@EGD Please explain why using a PUBLIC server is more secure than using a private one. Thanks.
Thomas Nelson (Maine)
@EGDso, you are referring to the same things Colin Powell and Condition Rice did, with impunity? Or what, basically, all senators do? Or are you referring to the millions of emails destroyed by Bush and Cheney in the midst of a criminal investigation for outing a CIA agent? Or is it Jeb Bush deleting millions of emails during an investigation? False equivalency? Sure.
EGD (California)
@Observor Neither is secure. (And I never claimed that to be the case anyway). The key with Mrs Clinton is that she knowingly transmitted classified material over an insecure server.
William (Hammondsport NY)
“Oh ma gawd Daddy, they’re saying terrible things about me.” “Don’t worry baby, you did nothing wrong. It’s just the fake news people again. But in the future, use a private cell phone, ok sweetheart?”
Dennis // (Chicago)
It's OK for Ivanka but for Hillary it's Lock her up? Special Investigation needed! Where's the FBI! Ask the Russians!
Every ready Bunny (Long Beach Ca)
Boy there they go AGAIN!! The Trumpsters daughter Ivanka can get away with this after they persecuted the Clinton controversy is such an injustice to anyone in government who used personal business on a government computer should be prosecuted just like they did to Clinton! If you work for the government you are NOT ALLOWED to do this I emailed my senator who was on the judicary committee and asked her to look into why our higher officials in the executive branch don't sign the code of ethics as every government employee has done as far back as 50 years ago. She responded and said that the very top officials like the chief of staff never looks into what they should sign that they have brought this up and NO ONE REALLY was to be ethical in government. Most government employees are dismissed because of an infraction as this broad had done. When wll this ever stop Ivanka works for us not the other way around. It is too bad too many radicals have really blamed Clinton because they are prejudiced against the Clintons but come on this family has gotten BIG BUCKS for doing unethical and insulting things to the american public by doing wrongful things in government. I really hope Mueller indicts this president and his family too. Ivanka has taken advantage and has destroyed the trust of the people like the idiot sitting in the WH who shouldn't be dog catcher let along the president of the US. This guy is NOT MY PRESIDENT!!
Jbugko (Pittsburgh, pa)
Hillary emails! We must have at least 9 hearings and Trey Gowdy can't help yelling with spittle coming out of his mouth during his accusatory rantings! Hillary's emails! Lock her up! "Ivanka's emails! Oh, well, um...er.... yeh, but; no, but; yeh, but, no but, yeh... um...." These days, apparently, Trump's loyalists are getting pointers from Vicki Pollard from the show "Little Britain".
Turgid (Minneapolis)
Ivanka and Jared should have talked her dad out of running; they knew better than anyone that he was not up to the task. Instead they let him take charge of the United States and become a laughing stock of history. I feel more sorry for Donald (which is not a lot) than I do for these two.
Karen (Birmingham )
The trumps and kushner think the laws don’t apply to them so it doesn’t matter if they understand them. They always buy their way out. The hill republicans are hypocritically silent as usual.
Stan (Chicago)
@Karen Because they are criminals. The Trump family is a criminal organization. They specialize in cons, financial fraud, tax fraud, consumer fraud, employment fraud, and now government fraud. Everything must be seen through this lens, or we will never have clarity in our response.
Butterfly (NYC)
@Karen If Ivanka was the plumber's daughter from Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, she'd have skipped college and she would have married a man picked out by her parents and had 3 children. Oh wait.
Beth (milford, pa )
Lack of knowledge of the rules or the law does not absolve someone of wrongdoing. You still get a ticket for speeding if you are unaware of the speed limit. There must be a full investigation of these emails. It's no different from 2016.
Sue Mee (Hartford CT)
Really? Comparing the President’s daughter’s emails to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s? Now an investigation? And I thought Democrats voted for improved health care.
gratis (Colorado)
@Sue Mee. GOP = Do as I say, not as I do.
ann (ct)
@Sue Mee not the president’s daughter. She is a Senior Advisor to the president and needs to follow the rules just like everyone else. She should never had been approved for an official position in the White House. It is nepotism. The hypocrisy is astounding and the silence on the Republican side, though expected, is damaging our democracy.
M Taylor (Madison, WI)
@Sue Mee Yes, Sue, really. In fact, the portfolio that Ivanka Trump has appropriated to herself includes many of the responsibilities of a cabinet level officer of the president's staff. Investigation will only turn up what we already know: the Executive branch has a tendency to hide its actions whenever it is possible regardless of whether it's ethical or legal. Clearly, the handling of official responsibilities and communications by federal government officials needs to be regulated for the benefit of the People NOT the individuals who temporarily hold offices serving the People. I'm not holding my breath that anything will happen until an actual crisis is precipitated by improperly handled communications between the government and the public. We've seen the Republicans attempt to manufacture crises over the email communications of Hillary Clinton. If they refuse to confront Ivanka Trump over this issue, we'll know for certain the reason for their concerns have to do with winning at all costs bathed in a lumpy gravy of hypocrisy.
BobMeinetz (Los Angeles)
Democrats gain only a comparison to Republican gutter politics by exaggerating this issue out of spite.
Edgar (NM)
The qualifications for Ms. Trump's security clearance in the White House include: ? Where is the outrage from the Republican Party? Gone with the Wind like the security protocol for the the current administration. Where is the outrage from the Trump base? IOIYAAT....It's okay if you are a Trump. Calling Trey Gowdy....you still have a month on the clock...start the investigation.
Dana Charbonneau (West Waren MA)
Is she really not smart enough to learn from the trials of Hillary Clinton? Or just so arrogant that she feels above the need to learn at all?
Phil (NJ)
The arrogant apple does not fall far from the tree.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@Dana Charbonneau If this were a quiz my answer would be the latter.
cc (nyc)
@Peter Mirijanian re: "no emails were ever deleted" Seriously, Peter? Not even one spam email was deleted? Next you'll be telling us that no lies were told.
EGD (California)
@cc Ivanka only deleted the emails about yoga and wedding plans.
Daniel (White)
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Lock her up!
Demosthenes (Chicago )
When will the Trump GOP mob going to start braying “lock her up”?
Michael Z (Manhattan)
Lock her up and throw away the key, Trump... That's what you wanted for Hillary & you continue to encourage the chant at your 'invitation only' rallies in the RED STATES...
Elizabeth Bello (Brooklyn)
Why is this not the leading headline? The NY Times and other news media crippled the Clinton campaign by reporting this as the most important news of the day. Where is the outrage today? The NY Times and the rest of the news media must take responsibility for what is happening to our democracy. You members of the third estate are being played by the far right and trump.
Jensetta (NY)
@Elizabeth Bello Good question, Elizabeth. Guess the NYT doesn't think it merits the level of attention they consistently gave Clinton. Are they still afraid of Donald's wrath?
Nancy (Winchester)
If this affair gets a bit more political damaging I'm expecting trump to release a statement declaring he hardly even knew her - she was just some low level White House functionary.
DaWill (DaWay)
Perhaps the Russians can provide us with the missing emails. They will be rewarded mightily by our press.
Norman McDougall (Canada )
Fortunately for Ivanka, irony is too sophisticated a concept for most of the Trump “base”. One idea at a time please - and keep it simple!
Sunny (Winter Springs, FL)
The crab apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Nancy (Winchester)
I believe Ivanka was ignorant about the rules. Her father wouldn't be capable of guidance because he's as profoundly ignorant about rules and procedures as she is. They're both living in their own alternate realities.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@Nancy Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
Astute (NYC)
Lock Her... oh, never mind. I can't take the irony.
Richard (NYC)
China, if you're listening, can you find and release the emails deleted by Ivanka's lawyer? I'm sure you will be greatly rewarded. On the other hand 'no reasonable prosecutor' would pursue this case. Or so I'm told....
Alan Harvey (Scotland)
Being unaware of the rules which Candidate Trump, as your employer and father sought to vilify an opposing Presidential candidate, does not and cannot mean that she is above the Law. Interesting line re Ivanka in Bob Woodward’s book .... “ I’m not a staffer..... I’m the First Daughter”.
Christian Haesemeyer (Melbourne)
I have a vague recollection that this has been considered a problem in the past?
EGD (California)
@Christian Haesemeyer Mostly because Mrs Clinton deliberately and knowingly sent classified special access materials, deleted tens of thousands of emails under subpoena, and then used bleach bit to wipe the server clean.
Dario Bernardini (Lancaster, PA)
Let's create a special counsel to investigate this horrible, dangerous violation. That's not my opinion...to quote Republicans on the Clinton email scandal: Marco Rubio: "Her actions were grossly negligent, damaged national security and put lives at risk." Rand Paul: People "have gone to jail for less severe classified breaches and national security." Kevin McCarthy: Clinton's actions were "extremely irresponsible." Paul Ryan: "No one should be above the law." So, to maintain rule of law and national security, say it with me: "Lock her up! Lock her up!"
Kathy (Chapel)
“Lock ‘er up” was my first reaction. Surely what was the cry about Sec Clinton is appropriate for The First Daughter.
caj (Hampton Roads, VA)
@Dario Bernardini Just to help: 1. Anything to do with the President's movements while not at the White House is automatically classified at the SECRET level. Lose lips sink ships. 2. A public email service is much worse than a private email server. You can bet (just as with Markle's Gmail) that multiple foreign governments already have access to her account as a person of interest.
signalfire (Points Distant)
@caj - makes me wonder, what do you think the 'multiple foreign governments' thought when they found out she was honing plans for a 'patented voting machine' (paper, pencil and a slotted cardboard box) and 'sausage casings...' I can hear them laughing from here.
Thorsten Fleiter (Baltimore)
There is a reason why nepotism is the preferred method of staffing administration of any developed country: you never get the best people for the job.
Jill C. (Durham, NC)
It's clear that as with everything else in her life, Ivanka Trump believes (and I'm sure her father concurs) that she is subject to the "Hot Girl Exemption" because she's pretty. After all, she's been told this her entire life.
Middleman MD (New York, NY)
To be clear, while using a private email account to conduct government business is unwise and a security risk, this example bears a closer resemblance to Huma Abedin's use of personal email and devices, not to Hillary Clinton's. Clinton used a private email server, not gmail or yahoo etc, while she was secretary of state. The allegation against her is that she did so in order to conduct her affairs as secretary of state without being scrutinized by the US government. That this presented a security risk from Chinese or Russian hackers is a fair criticism, but the critical difference is that Abedin's and Ivanka's actions appear to have been careless and foolish, while Clinton's, frankly, come across as more devious.
Rita (California)
@Middleman MD Yeah, Chelsea’s wedding arrangements should be open to the public. No Clinton didn’t use a private email server to avoid being scrutinized by the US Government.
Mr. Adams (Texas)
@Middleman MD I’m not sure I follow. A private email server is much easier for the government to gain access to for investigative purposes than an email account hosted by Google or another tech company. You’re suggesting that a private server is somehow more secret than a hosted account, but let’s think about that. If the FBI, say, wanted access to the private server they’d just have to seize it after obtaining a search warrant. If it’s a windows box, it just takes a couple of simple steps to gain admin access once you’re in physical possession. Even if the whole thing is encrypted, you could simply order the original admin to hand over a password. On the other hand, if your email is hosted by Google, I don’t even know how the FBI would go about requesting access. Google would probably deny access or deny that they have the ability to provide access (similar to when Apple refused to hack the California shooter’s iPhone). The ancients in Congress seem to have thought the same as you; a private server is somehow more ‘suspicious’. But this is tech ignorance. A private server is much more vulnerable to investigation than a hosted cloud service such as Gmail.
Rich (St. Louis)
@Middleman "[A]ppear to have been careless"?....according to what standard? Yours? Nice try, but no one buys it but the Trump cult members.
Dominic (Astoria, NY)
Who would have guessed that a purse designer with no government experience could make this type of repeated error? In all seriousness, I'm sick and tired of the Trump family brazenly acting in defiance of the law and of political norms. Admittedly, it seems that they have a deep family history of believing they are above the law and doing everything in their power to not only flaunt the law but profit off of doing so. I'm also quite sick and tired of the moral priggishness of the Republican party, which collectively screeches and screams about the perceived misdeeds of Democratic politicians and public figures, yet remains silent as a tomb when a Republican figure, say, skips a war memorial, stays in on Veteran's Day, grifts and scams their office for every loose penny, or uses a private email address.
DC (Philadelphia)
@Dominic So then what excuse do you give Hillary who repeatedly did the exact same thing? Pot, meet kettle.
C Wolfe (Bloomington IN)
@DC Na na na na na, she did it too—seriously? That's your ethical standard? To point to someone else and say she did it too? So sick of this notion that as long as Trump people can find some other politician who committed a comparable misdeed, then it's okay for them to do it and keep doing it. Didn't your mother ever teach you any better? You can't get out of having done something wrong by pointing to someone else who did it. It's still wrong.
Nancy (Winchester)
To call Ivanka a "purse designer" is a gross exaggeration of her qualifications as a Senior Presidential Advisor. It is highly unlikely she ever had anything to do with any designs other than signing her name on the contract allowing the use of her name. And of course accepting a nice percentage of the profit on each item.
Rad (Australia)
The simple reality of why this wasn't viewed as a big deal to Ivanka was because she never thought what Hillary Clinton did was wrong. She knew they were just selling another scam. Just like all the other business dealings in the past - it was a simple sales con - do and say whatever was needed to get the sale (in this case the White House). The Hillary email story was their best attempt to paint her as a criminal. Just a shame that the media jumped on the bandwagon and covered the Clinton email story so prominently and extensively.
Paul (Brooklyn)
I know the NYTimes has to cover this family but I think it would be much better if you print stories on what Trump and his family does that is legal, not abusive, not shady etc. It would be 99% shorter and free up your reporters to cover other things.
Sharon (Los angeles)
@Paul. Seriously? The american people need to be made aware of this non stop pattern of unseemly, hypocritical and, many times, illegal transgressions (emolluments, anyone?). Then maybe, some of those folks will finally start to understand the precarious place this mafia family has put our country in. NYT...never stop.
Paul (Brooklyn)
@Sharon-Thank your for your reply. It is a delicate balance, while my post was a little bit tongue in cheek, nevertheless there is a lesson to be learned. Yes Trump is a bigot, rabble rouser, admitted sexual predator, philanderer, pathological liar, de facto Russian spy, aider and abetter of a murderer, ego maniac demagogue but to counter somebody like this you have to offer an alternative. The NY Times should cover more moderate progressive people on both sides that give an alternative to Trump, instead of giving Trump extensive print space. The best way to counter an ego maniac demagogue is not to directly respond to them. It is like passing the corner drunk. Only engage with them if you have to, otherwise avoid them but condemn them to other people, authorities.
Sara G. (New York)
@Paul: "this family" sits in the White House, literally. They're professionally corrupt profiteering grifters, and much of what they do is shady, unethical and/or illegal. It behooves us all as a nation to have the media cover this well, persistently and repeatedly; our lives, our democracy and our planet depend on it.
RickyDick (Montreal)
This would not be such a big deal if not for the double-standard with the "Lock Her Up!" crowd. (Now we won't know to whom "her" refers!) The more alarming issue is: what in the world is Ivanka doing as a "senior advisor" to daddy in the first place? Same with Jared. Really, Donald? Are you serious? Do you think the American people are that dumb? Apparently, somewhere around 40% of them are...
DC (Philadelphia)
@RickyDick This is what those who desire to be dictators do.
YogaGal (San Diego, CA)
Silly Rabbit! Daddy's little girl was unaware of the rules because she is ABOVE the rules. (And, doesn't she look fetching in the photo, too?) Yessir, drain that swamp - appoint people who are ABOVE the rule of law.
Sari (NY)
Now it's ivanka's turn, will daddy dearest scream, "lock her up, lock her up"? How about "crooked ivanka"? I think not. The Democrats should go after this with both barrels. Just another example of how those people occupying the people's house think they are above the law and all the rules that apply.
Birdman (Arizona)
So right! I think it's time to get one of those "Lock Her Up" T Shirts!
Robert (Seattle)
After the endless dishonest partisan Republican Congressional hearings about the Clinton emails, which found no wrongdoing. After the endless string of assertions that Mr. Trump has made and continues to make about the Clinton emails, which have all been lies. After the Russians stole and released the DNC emails in order to help the Trump campaign, perhaps with the help of the Trump campaign itself. After the Trump mobs still chant the same thing at every Trump Nuremberg rally, in response to the endless false Trump Fox Republican charges: "lock her up." Given all that we have heard about email over the past n years. Oh Ivanka. You great daft fool. You miserable hypocrite. You rich careless hypocrite. You brilliant Ivy Leaguer. Our nation could not be in better hands.
Bubbles (Sunnyvale NS)
I'm sure she's a nice enough person - even upstanding - but she has little qualifications for her "job". That's why she should not have her type of clearance. She is dad's trophy daughter. That's all.
educator (NJ)
NY Times - why isn't this a top of the fold front page headline just like Hillary Clinton's email "scandal?" Are we going to drop this because it is irrelevant? It's just like Democrats to be so "mature" that they don't fight fire with fire. That's why they so often lose.
Stephen (Detroit)
It’s newspaper. Not Nancy Pelosi’s Twitter. You’re expecting too much.
Lily Blank (New York, NY)
Unaware of the rules! These people (and I mean our horrific president and his family) don't believe rules apply to them. After her father went around maligning Hillary Clinton at every opportunity, claiming that she should be "locked up," how can anyone not dot their i's and cross their t's, or in other words, do due diligence, as to what the rules are vis a vis email. These people have lived in a bubble of delusion and self-deception. Rules are made for other people, not for them, and when they break them, nothing happens. So far they are all teflon, nothing sticks. My hope is that in having the self-delusion and audacity for Sr. to run for President, and for his children (particularly Jared and Ivanka who actually think they have something to offer as Advisors), they have finally bitten off more than they can chew. I look forward to seeing them all in orange jumpsuits, and not for emails, that's just arrogant and stupid. It's for all the money laundering, false advertising, mis representation of property, and the multitude of other white collar crime that has kept them afloat all these years.
Steve A. Voter (Grayslake IL)
These actions defy words. When, oh when will the elected officials show some spine and put a stop to the endless array of criminal, unethical and dangerous ways that define the Trump presidency? Trump and his entire circle are unfit for leading a democratic nation. Remove them and restore integrity to our leadership.
Sarah (Boston)
The hypocrisy of this family, especially Ivanka (aka "I'm just going to be a daughter!") Trump, knows no bounds. But that's not new. We also have also always known, it was never about the emails.
Steve (longisland)
I guess Ivanka is now qualified to be the next democrat nominee for President? Except, Hillary deleted emails under subpoena and smashed her devices, bleaching her server. These nefarious acts were criminal obstruction of justice for which Hillary should have been indicted, tried and sent to a federal penitentiary.
Rob E Gee (Mount Vernon NY)
Just cause you say stuff doesn’t make it true. Hillary didn’t destroy her equipment personally like some maniacal thief in the night destroying evidence all the while cackling like the wicked witch of the west. Her team followed established procedures for getting rid of the equipment but of course we won’t let the facts stand in the way of your rant. Now that the feckless she-child of Drumpf did the same thing the Republican Party will look the other way because, after all Hillary didn’t do it. Sick of the lies...
Jim (California)
Ivanka's explanation, "I was unaware of the rules". Is this remotely possible considering her dad's ranting about Mrs Clinton's private server? Clearly, the liar gene has been passed along from father to children.
Independent (the South)
Will all the Trump supporters say lock her up? Probably not.
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
The Trump supporters share her father's, er, admiration for her. When she appears on screen, they all - as Rich Lowry said of Sarah Palin - sit up a little straighter.
Bob in Boston (Massachusetts)
@Independent I will - Lock Her Up!
DC (Philadelphia)
@Independent Will all those who defended Hillary for the exact same thing defend Ivanka? Probably not.
Ginger Walters (Chesapeake, VA)
After several years of listening to cries of "lock her up" we can be sure that the right will be silent when it comes to one of their own. How could Ivanka not know when the major battle cry during her father's campaign was Hillary's emails? They hypocrisy is astounding but not surprising.
Dorothy G (MA)
Her father uses an unsecured phone for his tweets. Look bleach, silicone. Plastic surgery and daddy's money will only get you so far. At some point you need rational thought capacity.
TL (CT)
I'm sorry, I missed the part where, after receiving a subpoena, Ivanka deleted 30,000 emails. I know this warms the hearts of Democrats. What warms my heart is that Hillary isn't in the White House. Let the Democrats and the FBI come after Ivanka, and we will see who the hypocrites are.
Lorem Ipsum (DFW, TX)
Thanks, Captain Whatabout, but we already know.
Chrissy (Rumford ME)
@TL It warms your heart that Hillary isn't in the WH- that's somewhat short of saying it warms you heart that Trump is. Every time he speaks he lies, when he's not gagging on his foot. But if he's your idea of a great president I guess it's true, there is no accounting for taste. ( You like foot?)
Richard (NYC)
Here it is: "After Ms. Trump’s personal email use was discovered, Mr. Lowell helped sort out what emails qualified as official records that needed to be kept for posterity, The Post reported. That was similar to the approach Mrs. Clinton used when she was sorting through tens of thousands of emails."
Rocky (Denver)
Before realizing Ivanka was his favored daughter, he was heard to say, “lock her up.”
pale fire (Boston)
Email? I am still waiting for someone to help me understand what exactly are qualifications, skills or experiences possessed by White House current occupant's daughter and son-in-law that enable them to work on behalf of the American people as his "advisors." Anyone?
merchantofchaos (TPA FL)
@pale fire, Using the truth model of the princess' papa, let's say she wrote the New York Times opinion piece and she's the one watching and controlling his antics, for the good of our country. The truth being, all criminals need trusted minions and who better than the next gen of grifter. Unfortunately her qualification is birthright.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@merchantofchaos She's doing a bang up job of controlling his antics....NOT! I've seen 3 year olds with a better temperament than him and a better vocabulary. He is beyond hope.
Marjorie (New jersey)
I just want her to have to testify before Congress and see if she can utter simple declarative sentences without a script. She will have to be lying, so it's going to be a challenge.
AMM (Radnor PA)
Drop it. Nobody really cares. Really. We don't. Agree with others: focus on something more important. We live in an age of total transparency but I doubt Ivanka was intentionally trying to hide communications. Rather, her father's reckless attacks on others (media, military heroes, etc etc) is way more disturbing, don't you think?
Sharon (Los angeles)
@AMM. You don't speak for me or millions of others that do care.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@AMM Please enlighten us and tell us how you felt about Hillary and her e-mails.
EAZiemba (Boston, MA)
I know that John Oliver and Bill Maher have done their last shows for the season. This story is just too delicious! Maybe we can encourage them to return with another show, "The Trump Family Christmas Special". Please John! Please Bill! One more show before the end of 2018!
Ricardo222 (Astoria)
By her father’ standards, Ms. Trump is unqualified for any public service position, let alone one that requires a security clearance. However, the “double” standard clearly rules in this White House.
Paula (East Lansing, MI)
@Ricardo222 Sorry--"double" standard? I don't think there is any standard at all except blind loyalty to the foulest piece of muck to ever disgrace our White House. These people are worse than we expected--of course who could have predicted a president with two items on his daily calendar--welcome the Christmas tree, and have lunch with the VP. That was yesterday. No wonder he tweets and plays golf all the time. Maybe it's better that he doesn't actually have a role in the government other than bloated figure- . . . er, backside.
Ricardo222 (Queens)
@Paula I debated using the word “standard”, entirely and would have qualified its use but for fat thumbs on a skinny device. Your point is well taken.
Evan (Bronx)
I am eagerly awaiting the NY Times and the news media coverage of this matter with the same veracity as it did with Hillary Clinton’s emails during the 2016 campaign. Many commentators reading this are undoubtedly getting a good laugh as they read these words. I know I am.
Dominique (Branchville)
So absolutely sick of hearing, seeing, reading anything about the Trumps. It's a travesty that Ivanka is even "working" in the WH.
HN (Philadelphia, PA)
Unfortunately, Trump's supporters don't seem to understand hypocrisy. This will be spun as an attack on Trump, and they will love him even more for it.
Stefan (Berlin)
I was asking myself: "Is there _anyone_ in the White House that can be trusted to be both intelligent and work in the countries best interests?" The answer I gave myself was disturbing.
Anne Hajduk (Fairfax Va)
Please, Dems, don't get distracted by this tempting rabbit hole when real economic and policy issues need immediate attention. The health and financial security of millions of moderate income Americans depend on you FOCUSING.
M (M)
"....characteristic of a repeated blurring of the lines between her government work and other aspects of her life, which used to include her namesake licensing and apparel businesses." The last paragraph sums up the mentality of this entire crime family who are running the country and many in the administration act in kind.
RCH (New York)
Not the same. Trump used a personal email account. Any correspondence exists on the servers of the provider (likely Google) and can be subpoenaed. Clinton invented an entire email system. She controlled all aspects of the system and deleted tens of thousands of emails.
TH Williams (Washington, DC)
I can assure all unequivocally that Secretary Clinton did not ´invent’ any email system. In addition other Secretaries of State did just like the Trump’s are doing now. Using private email for work, on occasion, is quite common. Trump uses his private phone every day. Secretary Clinton’s use of email was investigated, by Republicans, no prosecution or charges resulted. We don’t need to worry about Russian spies, Trump invited his bankers right in and shared national security matters from the very beginning.
Nedro (Pittsburgh)
So sayeth Fox News and only Fox News. Federal courts have dismissed this accusation as unfounded. Let’s move on.
ChristineMcM (Massachusetts)
"Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal account." that has to be the most hamhanded response I've ever heard. Where has she been in the past 3 years? On Mars? Of course the a answer is simple: the Trumps, the whole lot of them, feel the laws of this land don't apply to them. Theyc get that from their father who will never ever admit to making a mistake, and blames the nearest person in sight. This Trumpian arrogance, that they're all above the law, from Don Jr. in that infamous Trump Tower meeting, to Jared operating without a security clearance and now Ivanka with her emails, is the most offensive part of it. My God, January can't come soon enough.
Fybarra (Ph.D. Az)
@ChristineMcM So far and unfortunately "They have been above the Law" . Been waiting patiently for this to end , hoping that it does before the damage to our Democracy is irreparable.
AP Cook (Lost River WV)
I hope the media steps up to asking all the same questions about Ivanka’s emails as Clinton’s. What tune will Linsey, Marco and the rest of the GOP Trump bunch say now. Call them all out.
maggie (toronto)
In what universe can a person be unaware of government email protocol when one's father screeched from the rafters every single day about his opponent's misuse of same?
Jeremy T (Chicago)
@maggie In the Trump family universe, that's where. You know, the universe where the rules that apply to the other 7.5 billion inhabitants of planet Earth, are just that, rules for other people, not Trumps.
JBR (Westport, CT)
The new congress is going to be very, very busy for the next two years.
Rick Beck (Dekalb IL)
I can only assume that the republican senate will be initiating a lengthy comprehensive and expensive investigation into this criminal use of official government emails. Either that or their necks will become incredibly sore from looking the other way.
Mk (Brooklyn)
Don't think they will instigate an investigation, why should they? Hillary has already been incriminated for this crime so it will be backwalked the same as trumps misdeeds. His bankruptcys all his lies, the holy people who back him as long as he doesn't turn to women and their pregnancies. Our birth rate has dropped, I wonder if all these holy people are practicing abstinence? Guess their health care programs pay for that, Perhaps president bone spurs feels he has a license to attack our brave men who walk into the fire so he can sit on his cushioned money and protect all of America. Two more years before congress can go back to the job of working for ALL the people, not trumps 1%.
e w (IL, elsewhere)
It seems you've all forgotten that the rules do not apply to the Trump family. And even if they do apply, you're wrong.
Sara G. (New York)
When do Republicans start their media rants, and when do the hearings begin?
BL (NJ)
She shouldn’t have been conducting government business to begin with. Someone might crowdfund a rally where Senator Warren gets up and says, “lock her up; lock her up”. But maybe that’s coming, isn’t it? Actually, I think the crowd will start chanting and the Senator will demur. Good enough.
brian (Chicago)
Looking forward to seeing Jared and Ivanka called in to testify at House committee hearings next year, as neither of them look like the type who've ever been held accountable for anything. And with the amount of misbehavior shown by this White House, it seems like repeated appearances will be necessary, so why not hold the hearings at night and make it a weekly reality show? I'm sure the ratings would be off the charts.
MIKEinNYC (NYC)
Please use email programs and get used to how they work. Not everyone is a sophisticated computer or smartphone user so they keep doing things the way they know. Trying to get some people to change their habits is like trying to teach your mother how to use technology.
PUAAN (swampland)
@MIKEinNYC Errr, my mother taught ME technology. And also to hundreds of teachers and students in the 1980’s. I really miss her a lot....
Lou Panico (Linden NJ)
Question for Trump voters. Should Ivanka be put in the same jail cell that has been reserved for Hillary Clinton? Or does she get her own private jail cell?
Tim Moffatt (Orillia,Ontario )
Nailed it. I love irony
Sandra Garratt (Palm Springs, California)
@Lou Panico. Orange is the new black Ivanka.....as she is not violent she will be in the general prison population and maybe she can prove to be helpful like Martha Stewart and Leona Helmsley were when they did time...both helped organize and improve prison functions, laundry etc and did their time and paid for their crimes ....I find it hard to believe that she was unaware or ignorant of what she was doing......this criminal family does as they like, they do not "work well w/ others" as they say in elementary school.
Margo Channing (NYC)
@Sandra Garratt Off topic a bit but those two ladies you mentioned, Martha and Leona. They did indeed do jail time while Dimon, Blankfein and Co. did not. They did more damage than Martha and Leona combined.
NJLatelifemom (NJregion)
Amateur hour at the White House, in all its glory. "Unaware of the rules" is surely the Trump family credo. This hearkens back to Jared's defense of being "overwhelmed" during the campaign. And if that doesn't work, well, the rules don't really apply to the Trump clan. Isn't it remarkable that for such an upright group, they have such a retinue of lawyers on hand? Crime families always do. January 2019 will soon be here. Let us give thanks.
katie (Loveland oh)
and why doesn't the media hold them accountable for these lies?
Paula (East Lansing, MI)
@katie "and why doesn't the media hold them accountable for these lies?" Teflon--it works on politicians just as well as kitchen pans. Ronald Reagan discovered it. Nothing sticks to them because their followers are more worshipers than critical thinkers. They just worship at the altar of Faux News and there's never anything to worry about.
r mackinnon (concord, ma)
@katie Well, legitimate media tries to (see WAPO list of 5K and counting proven Trump lies), but trump has his own personal, truth-averse, bloated minister of propaganda: High school grad Hannity ! Expert on Everything. He enjoys intimate gourmet meals at the WH with DJT (on tax dime), and excels at hosing and feeding a low-information, race-baited, lily white base. Sad.
Deirdre Diamint (New Jersey)
Dear Ivanka: you will need a much bigger staff to gather data for subpoenas and stepping down now doesn’t change anything
MB (W D.C.)
Doesn’t matter if there was no classified material. Doesn’t matter if there was no server. Doesn’t matter if it was limited in duration. Doesn’t matter if it was mostly scheduling and logistics. DOESN’T MATTER. The president’s family of government employees are not above the law.
Matthew (Nj)
Until proven otherwise, it seems they are. Nothing at all could go wrong.
RP Smith (Marshfield, Ma)
I want to see Jim Acosta ask Trump about this in a full room of reporters, ASAP.
Debbie (Greece)
@RP Smith Jim Acosta will not be allowed to ask about this. As per Trump's tactics, Jim Acosta will begin asking the question. Trump will interrupt at the beginning of the question, before allowing the full question to be asked. Trump will then pontificate on the subject, without answering any question (and perhaps, as is his wont, go off on a tangent to other subjects) and then consider the question answered. Jim will not be allowed to finish asking the full question and that is his only chance as reporters will now only be allowed to ask one quesiton each. Trump's new rules make it impossible for any journalist to ask a full question, putting himself and his administration in a position where they do not have to answer to the American people. This is the new Trump tactic to put himself and his administration above the law and avoid accountability at all costs.
Mk (Brooklyn)
Jim Ocasta will not be called on to question trump and if trump allows it, trump will smirk and not answer. This is the new democracy. No questions, no follow up, only the truth from our leader. Get rid of the second amendment, doesn't work in this new democracy. Trump has already said he will not respond to Muellers questions, two years from now everybody will be forgiven for their transgressions to the world.
Nuffalready (upstate NY)
@RP Smith I believe that question just might be the straw that breaks that camel's back and cause our President to lose it. I just might lunge at Acosta. It could get very very ugly in that press room.
Kim Derderian (Paris, France)
It's Saturday Night Live 24/7 with this cast of characters. I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Either way, Kleenex sits permanently within arm's length.
SMD (Barcelona)
After listening to her father ranting and raving in rally after rally about Hillary Clinton's private server, leading chants of "Lock her up!", Ivanka was "unaware of the rules"? Not credible. She is either much more stupid than we thought, or believes she's entitled to continue blurring the line between government business and her private life. Perhaps this was only to be expected, since her private life as Trump's daughter is the sole reason she's in government.
ronnyc (New York, NY)
@SMD "She is either much more stupid than we thought, or believes she's entitled to continue blurring the line between government business and her private life." Or both.
Reader902 (Basking Ridge NJ)
@ronnyc Acute entitlement is a highly heritable trait.
Red Sox, '04, '07, '13, '18 (Boston)
"Ms. Trump had told people in the White House that she was unaware of the rules when she was using her personal email account." Ignorance is no excuse. Ask Hillary Clinton if that's true.
Debbie (Greece)
@Red Sox, '04, '07, '13, '18 How could she possibly have been ignorant of this when her father's campaign focused so heavily on Hillary Clinton's email use? I'm just not buying it. Just like her continuing business activities (which she knows are problematic), Ms. Trump will have been aware of the rules, but looking for ways in which to circumvent them. The whole Trump family are well-versed in using loopholes in order to benefit themselves, that's what a lot of businesses do and they are treating the White House and the Trump family administration as a business, always on the lookout for loopholes to exploit - whether it be financially or politicially.
silver vibes (Virginia)
@Red Sox, '04, '07, '13, '18 -- again, the president will bleat out "fake news" while Republicans remain silent. The "relatively small" volume of emails that Ivanka sent out is beside the point. Secretary Clinton was pilloried for doing what Ivanka has been doing so will FBI Director Wray call her out for her egregious carelessness? Or is she above the law, like her father thinks he is?
Margo Channing (NYC)
@silver vibes The repubs have been mum for two years starting with McConnell. They've turned into mutes on anything concerning 45.
da veteran (jersey shore)
The hypocrisy flaunted by the Trumps only slightly edges out the disgust for their low, unethical, behavior, which is running neck and neck with 'you've got to be kidding me they can't get this simple thing right?'
Alan R Brock (Richmond VA)
Really. You can't make this stuff up. Don't even try anymore.
RM (Vermont)
There is a difference, a profound difference, between the subject matter in e-mails to and from a Secretary of State and e-mails in Ivanka's "government business". The attempt to create a false equivalence is silliness.
Hootin Annie (Planet Earth)
@RM Remember if you will, that there were multiple hearings and investigations over HC's emails which led to the conclusion that there was no offense resulting in indictments. Yet, the President of the US, continues to beat the drum of "Crooked Hillary" and "LOCK HER UP!!". So, fair is fair in calling out Ivanka. As they say, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Aside from the fact that you have no idea what she's discussing, her father still gabs on an insecure cellphone, and presumably he's discussing government business. To paraphrase Leona Helmsley, "Laws are for the little people".

@stan continople And I note that the author of the article, by leaving out any discussion of the contents, other than personal schedules, leaves it to the imagination that she, like a Secretary of State, is e-mailing on matters of vast national importance and sensitivity. What a crock. The other difference is, Hillary was advised in advance to not communicate other than through government servers, but persisted anyway. Whereas this story indicates that when Ivanka became aware that her e-mail practices were improper, she stopped.

Lock her up!
McGloin (Brooklyn)
@Guillaumel "Lock her up," denies due process. We don't want to help Republicans undo the rule of law. Try this chant, Indict her. Arrest her. Give her a fair trial!
Counter Measures (Old Borough Park, NY)
@Guillaumel And her husband plus Stephen Miller can share the cellblock! Dov Hikind can bring them latkes!!!
Emily J Hancock (Geneva, IL)
@Guillaumel her husband did the same thing and it went nowhere. This will go nowhere as well. Another day in the Trump media sham.
K Yates (The Nation's File Cabinet)
Oh for Pete’s sake. She knew exactly what she was doing. She just thought she was above the law. Isn’t that the main characteristic of this family? And aren’t they the model for the rest of the cynical 1 percent that governs our country? Tick tock, Ivanka. Better get your affairs in order. Mueller is coming.

@K Yates Poetic justice? First trump viciously attacks Adam Schiff, the California congressman who will now be the head of the Russia investigation come January, we now find that the White House princess uses private email which her father used to pillory Hillary Clinton and vowed to lock her up! Now we have her private attorney stating "move along, nothing to see here". She deserves the same treatment as Clinton, especially since it has been established since the Clinton debacle that private emails are a no-no. Do different rules and laws now apply to the occupants of the White House? Violate emoluments clause for personal financial gain, check. Use your influence to get trademarks approved in China, check. Use your influence to secure funding for a debt ridden albatross property, check. Arrogantly disregard the irrefutable evidence that Saudi prince Mohammed bin Salman initiated the murder of Wash Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi so as not to threaten personal properties and investments, check. Disgustingly attack the democratic state of CA, blaming poor forest management for the horrific fire that so far has claimed 80 lives, never missing an opportunity to lash out at the opposition, even in the event of tragedy, check. No sane person believes that these hateful grifters naively didn't know better. This sounds like the excuse a five year old uses. I wonder if orange is her color. she might object to the stripes though. I've heard horizontal stripes make you look fat.
