This was so exciting and fun to do! I do them in print, but this one I entered into the online puzzle because I thought it might trigger a secret message or something. When it didn't, then I really had to think for a bit - and when I got the answer, it was so thrilling! I felt like a secret agent, with my special decoder ring, i.e., my brain!

As an online puzzle subscriber, I had a heck of a time finding the contest results. Thought for sure it'd be a Wordplay item -- found it by Googling.

I wish that selecting the correct word arrangement (left to right) would garner the solver extra points. Since the arrangement wasn’t specified, I spent more energy on settling on “left to right” than I did on solving the puzzle. Lol. Congrats to the winners!

what is a SMOY
L.A. Bruce D (Los Angeles)
@rnrnry it's one of the rebus answers, the Y of SNOWDAY going down is replaced by KEY to make SMOKEY going across (127 A). That Y replaces the L in 1 down to make the YOU of the answer phrase YOU ARE OUT NOW.

Could we see the word "KEY" placed in the appropriate four squares in the graphic for the posted answer grid? It appears to have been omitted entirely.
Barry Ancona (New York NY)
Dr W, *Under* the filled-in grid, Will has provided the crossing words with the four "KEY" rebus elements.
Dr W (New York NY)
@Barry Ancona Yes, I see that -- but presentation is everything, and I still would have preferred what I suggested.

Darn it! I was convinced it was YEAR CHINA TOAST SLEW.

97% of submissions were correct. That’s impressive. Or at least it makes me feel better that I didn’t win with the odds of winning being one in 776.
