Yes, I think art contributes positively to the world. One reason why I think art contributes positively to the world is because it nurtures the interest in the arts among young people which brings many benefits to society, ranging from cognitive growth and bonding for individuals, to cross-cultural understanding and economic activity for communities (Hewlett Foundation). Effective arts education can nurture a lifelong interest in the arts, build audiences for the future, and- particularly through the public education system-reach a broad segment of students at a critical time in their development (Hewlett Foundation). It can also contribute to the world positively by knowing that any art piece can make a difference in the world because it could probably communicate culture within it which could change others opinions on something and help the world become more diverse in a way. I personally think art contributes positively to the world. Art contributing positively can definitely make an impact on the world referring to what I said earlier about it. My favorite visual artists are Hirohiko Araki and Eiichiro Oda of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Fame as well as One Piece respectively. Hirohiko’s art style has changed a lot throughout the serialization and it is inspiring how he became one of the first mangakas to have their art featured in the Louve. Oda’s ability to tell a whole lot of story in one panel is amazing. He doesn’t need to have his characters explain his surroundings all he needs to do is show them and the images he creates tell the story itself.

My favorite visual artist is Claude Monet. I have always thought portraits were boring, so when I heard that Monet does landscapes, I looked further into him. I found this out by watching one of my favorite movies, Titanic. Jack was raving about the paintings Rose had that were done by Monet, and he explained how he only did landscapes. I have always loved nature, whether in person, or a photograph, or in a painting. Then later that year, I went on a field trip to New York. there, we visited two museums; one had a Monet piece. I remember feeling like I had been struck into the ground. It must have been thirty feet in width and ten in height. It was a beautiful scene full of purples, blues, and greens. I was amazed with the blending and texture of the piece. In my town, our public library has sculptures on the lawn. I personally love this touch because it makes it feel more homey, to me, at least. I think art always makes a house feel like a home. Especially pictures of the family and friends who live there. Art is powerful, yet it tends to be overlooked sometimes. I want to make sure that never happens.

My favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh, he has such beautiful paintings and is a very talented artist with such meaning, Starry Night is my favorite by him it takes a darker scheme in colors but still contrasts when he adds in the bright colors.

My favorite artist is Vincent Van Gogh because I love the Starry Night piece. I think that the Starry Night is one of the most beautiful pieces of art I have ever seen. I would go visit the Andy Warhol exhibit because I could go do something I don’t normally do and I would love to try something new I have never been to a art museum so I think that would be awesome.

I think the most important artists of any time period would be Leonardo da Vinci in the Renaissance, and Monet and Picasso in the early 1900s. Da Vinci redefined the way art was created by emphasizing mathematics and science in art. Monet and Picasso were the greatest in impressionism and surrealism respectively. I agree that Andy Warhol is a very important artist during the 20th century because he made art relatable to the average American. He made everyday objects in people's lives more important. His non-traditional methods made him unique, and he criticized certain aspects of society, such as American propaganda and celebrities, through art. I don’t think art has to be around for a long time to receive the same kind of attention. Since information can be passed around so quickly today on social media, a piece can easily be recognized around the world within days.

I do not have a favorite piece of art. I'm not really into it that much. I have been to an art museum with my grandparents, it was pretty boring. I agree with Mr. Cotter, even though I don't know much, Andy Warhol makes some pretty approachable pieces. Art doesn't have to stand the test of time. Most pieces people enjoy for their deeper meaning and pleasing features to look at. I wouldn't mind visiting the Andy Warhol exhibition. maybe it would change my views on a lot of different aspects of art.

I do not agree with the statement that Andy Warhol is the most important American artist of the second half of the 20th century. I feel like it would be difficult to deem someone "the most important" even of a specific time frame because he has specific media of art, and can only represent himself in those ways. I don’t think art has to be around for a long time to receive the same kind of attention. Since information can be passed around so quickly today on social media, a piece can easily be recognized around the world within days. Yes, I would be interested in visiting the exhibit because it offers multiple works of Andy Warhol to look at. Other artists I am in interested in are Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Salvador Dali.

One of my favorite artists is Leonardo da Vinci, I think he is one of the best artists because he is the artist to Mona Lisa and that is one of the most well known art pieces of the world. Plus the detail in it is insane. He had amazing talent.Another good piece of art he did was The Last Supper. I remember being a kid learning about him and these pieces in art class. Another artist that I have always been interested in and a piece I have always loved is The Starry Night. And I actually have in my house The Persistence of Memory, I have a special place in my heart for Salvador Dali. I would be interested in any artist I love art.

I think the most important artists of any time period would be Leonardo da Vinci in the Renaissance time period. Da Vinci used math and science in his art. Yes I do agree about Andy Warhol was an incredibly important figure in American art post 1950 but there were ,any other artist that could have been talked about instead. No I would not be interested in vising the exhibition be use I don't really like them. I am interested in other artist like Pablo Picasso and not yet famous artist from Hanover-Horton like Jake Casler

After reading the NY times article "Who Is Your Favorite Visual Artist, What is Your Favorite Work of Art" I'm realized that I am not very informed with what is going on in the art world. I am not really a big fan of artwork and paintings. In my house we really only have paintings hanging that my mom has painted. She is a very good painter and use to paint a lot when she was in high school and college but doesn't really paint anymore. But she is the only painter I know and recognize since I'm not big into art at all.

After reading the NY times article "Who Is Your Favorite Visual Artist, What is Your Favorite Work of Art" I'm not very informed in the art world, but a piece that stands out is Starry Night by Vincent Van Gouh. If i were to pick a favorite it would the SEC refs who paint the way for Alabama to the SEC Championship. In conclusion i don't know a lot about visual art but SEC refs and Vincent Van Gouh are ones of a kind.
Richard Comet (Hanover, Michigan)
My candidate for most important artist of anytime would be Vincent Van Gouh. Vincent Van Gouh was bipolar, he suffered from depression, he was very poor, and he committed suicide. Even after all these major set backs he still managed to be one of the most successful painters of all time, and he is known for his art all around the world. My favorite paintings from Van Gouh are his sunflower art.
Maxwell Comets (Hanover)
My most important artist is Leonardo da Vinci. He is my most important one because he is left handed like me and left handed people are known to be bad writers so the fact that he proved people wrong fascinates me. I do not believe that Andy Warhol is the most important artist because there are many perspectives to look from to just narrow down the most important artist. No I do not feel like it because art from any time can express any meaning. I would like to visits Warhol's exhibits and see them in person because I find it fascinating that someone can have so much creativity. One paining that I would like to visit is the Mona Lisa painting.

The most important artists of any time period would be Leonardo da Vinci in the Renaissance, Monet and Picasso in the early 1900's. I agree that Andy Warhol is a important artist during the 20th century because he made art relatable to ordinary people. He made everyday objects in people's lives seem important. His methods made him standout, and he attacked certain aspects of society.

After learning about Andy Warhol’s artwork in class I would like to see his pieces on display. His usage of everyday objects has always impressed me while it makes his art very approachable. While it’s easy to find images online of artwork, nothing compares to the original canvases. Art does not need to stand the test of time. While some artwork may have been created for a specific moment invoking an everlasting feeling in viewers for centuries, some are just aesthetically pleasing. Artwork can have a specific message only for current relevance.

In my opinion, it’s impossible to pinpoint a single “most important” artist of a time period. For one thing, fame tends to favor white men. How many famous artists of the 20th century can you name that weren’t white men? They exist, but because of institutionalized racism and sexism, they never make it to the forefront of conversations like this about “important art.” There’s more to consider here than simply the time period. There’s also culture, geographical location, race and ethnicity, gender, social class, age, and a multitude of other factors to consider. Different artists may have very different levels of impact on different groups of people. Andy Warhol may indeed be the most important artist of the second half of the 20th century—to many white Americans. Adrian Piper or Renee Cox might be the most important artist of the time period to many others. None of this is to diminish Warhol’s accomplishments. He certainly made an impact on the culture of the time. I’d love to go see the exhibition of his artwork. I’d also love to see more exhibitions of artwork made by women and people of color throughout history.

While there are a great number of deserving candidates, I believe the most influential artist is Marcel Duchamp. Duchamp’s art took off in the time following World War I by challenging the public’s conception of what art was. He found the art of many contemporary artists were intended only to please the eye. He believed art should serve the mind. He challenged conventional thought about what art is and greatly influenced post World War I art. While I agree that Andy Warhol was an incredibly important figure in American art post 1950, it is dismissive of other artists to suggest he was the most important. Many other artists, Pablo picasso and Willem De Kooning greatly contributed to the scene. Naturally art must stand the test of time to be the subject of retrospective such as this. While value and quality is completely subject to each individual’s taste, an artist must be well known and widely acclaimed to be the subject of a retrospective. Andy Warhol, while a highly talented, influential, and well regarded artist, is not one of my favorite artists. This is due completely to my own taste and says nothing about the quality of his work. My favorite artist is Claude Monet. His paintings always manage to transport me to whatever scene is depicted and usually result in me feeling a profound sense of calm and/or happiness.

I would be interested in visiting the Andy Warhol exhibit because many of his works have to be experienced up close to understand. A lot of his pieces seem simple or childish without knowing the meaning behind them. Walking through his exhibit would give a sense of the major issues in America in the late 20th century and the public's response to them. Another great artist of the 20th century was Georgia O’Keeffe. I like her work because she mixes abstract and realism to create softer images. I like her flower paintings because many of them are done in pastels and have beautiful shading.

In the past few years, I've become more interested in art because of some classes I've taken in high school. I've taken photography classes and Ansel Adams, a specialist in black and white photography has always caught my eye. His works are among my favorites. I am less experienced when studying the art of illustrators and painters though, much like with Andy Warhol. On a visit to the Chicago Institute of Art in April of last year, one work of art I remember seeing of Warhol was "Mao" which was his take on "the most widely reproduced portrait in the world." I do not agree with the statement that Andy Warhol is the most important American artist of the second half of the 20th century. I feel like it would be difficult to deem someone "the most important" even of a specific time frame because he has specific media of art, and can only represent himself in those ways. Other artists have different ways of expression and can produce art that suits one group of views as opposed to another. He certainly was effective and was important, but not the most important. This plays into art having withstand the test of time as well. Art can be literally priceless, but the artists' name is what you are buying, in order to establish a worth to art, people need to feel emotional connections and believe that it is worth something. The people are in charge of what is worth more in society when it comes to art, and artistic expression.

Some of my candidates for the most important artist of any time period are Frida Kahlo, Michelangelo, Vincent Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, and Leonardo da Vinci. I agree that Andy Warhol is the most important American artist of the second half of the 20th century. His works are more well-known than any other works created by American artists in the late 20th century. He helped lead the pop art movement. No, I believe art can become instantly iconic. For example, a work that causes controversy when it is released can create a discussion that lasts for a long time. Yes, I would be interested in visiting the exhibit because it offers multiple works of Andy Warhol to look at. What other artists are you interested in? Other artists I am in interested in are Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, and Salvador Dali.
Melina (Ames, IA)
Andy Warhol's use of pop art to comment on social issues like consumerism and capitalism inspired an entire new generation of artists doing the same. There are not many artists in the late 20th century who had a bigger impact on the American art scene. His use of bright colors and repeating patterns are still widely seen in an array of different artists' work today. Because Andy Warhol's work came at such a consequential time in world history, and there are so many memorials for that time period, his art doesn't necessarily have to stand a 'test of time.' It characterized some of the most iconic events in human history.
Naomi Biela (Ames High School)
If I had to pick a most important artist, I might go to Michelangelo. His works in both painting and sculpture greatly changed the art after him, and he was the creator of some of the greatest works of art, to this day. Warhol pushed our sense of what is art and challenged how we view our world. However, there are other artists from this period who also deserve credit. Take Pablo Picasso. Though his works stayed in the realm of painting, the abstract nature of his work is contagious and there are many artists whose works reflect him. Who is to say whether or not art stands the test of time? While some artists may seem “relevant” today, it is not for any person to judge whether or not a work of art has meaning. I think every artist will, at some point be relevant. I think visiting this exhibit would be most fascinating. It is Andy Warhol, a visionary artist. However, the deeper reason is that in looking at the scope of the exhibit, I see numerous pieces and themes in his work which I had not been aware of and this is the greatest reason to see this exhibit. For me, there are few greater joys than discovering new works by an artist and experiencing them in person. As far as my interests are concerned, Salvador Dalì, da Vinci, Michelangelo, van Gogh, and Klimt are some of my favorites. However, Titian, Hieronymus Bosch, and other artists of their eras are deeply beloved to me, either because of their classicism or because they pushed the boundaries of acceptable art.

After reading this NYT article, I do not have a favorite piece of art. I don't really appreciate art either, I think art is an interesting thing. Art inspires and gives joy to many people, maybe I'm too immature to understand it. I think art is very unappreciated in our society and no one really gets the importance of it.
Anney Lewis (Oxford Middle School)
After reading the article, "Who Is Your Favorite Visual Artist, What Is Your Favorite Work of Art", I like to look at art, but I do not really have a favorite artist. I don't really pay attention to who did the piece, just what it looks like. Art is cool to me because I am terrible at art and it amazes me that people can actually be that good.

My favorite paintings from Van Gouh are his sunflower art. At a time in his life were everything was falling apart he painted happy sunflowers to cope with his depression. The sunflowers also represented life. some of the sunflowers are bright with yellow hues, while others are wilted and brown representing life coming to an end. In conclusion my candidate for most important artist of any time would be Vincent Van Gouh.
